Prevent Heartburn and Acid Reflux by Improving the Health of Your Diaphragm

We pay a lot of attention to maintaining the health of certain parts of our bodies, especially the heart, lungs hair, nails, and skin, but how many people ever consider their diaphragm? Unless you have had advanced lessons in activities that focus on breathing, such as singing, swimming or playing wind instruments, you probably have not heard much about your diaphragm. Consciously controlling and exercising your diaphragm helps you breathe more deeply and to hold your breath longer which is key for the above mentioned activities as well as activities in which aiming is vital such as archery, target shooting and golf.

Did you know that your diaphragm is not only important for controlling breathing, but is also vital for your overall health? The diaphragm’s role in breathing also makes it part of the system that delivers proper amounts of oxygen to all the parts of your body. Without enough oxygen, virtually all parts of the body experience reduced performance and can even be damaged in the long run. One of the most noticeable side-effects of inadequate oxygen supply is a lack of energy. Sometimes, the real cause of lethargy and fatigue is simply not getting enough oxygen to the brain and muscles for them to perform at optimal levels. Any professional athlete will tell you that breathing right helps them play their best. Try this experiment: pick up something that you consider to be fairly heavy. If you try picking it up while holding your breath, you will find it more difficult than if you try picking it up while breathing deeply in and out.

An even less obvious, but no less vital aspect of the diaphragm is its effects on the digestive, blood circulatory, and nervous systems. Few people realize that the diaphragm is located not only under their lungs, but that it also separates the chest cavity (where the heart, lungs etc. are) and the abdominal cavity (home of the stomach, intestines etc.). The diaphragm extends from the front of the chest all the way to the spine and fills the rib cage below the lungs from one of your sides to the other. It is a broad, flattened, dome-like muscle that, just like any muscle in the body, can become weak and that can be strengthened with exercise, stimulation and proper diet. The diaphragm has holes in it that allow the esophagus, nerves, veins and arteries to pass through it. The muscle tissue that surrounds these holes squeeze the tubes, helping to control flow. In fact, symptoms of “heartburn”, upset stomach, and vomiting can have their root cause in a weak diaphragm that is not properly constricting the esophagus.

Perhaps you have heard of a condition called a ‘hiatal hernia’. This is a very painful condition in which a part of the stomach tries to squeeze through the hole in the diaphragm surrounding the esophagus. The side-effects of this condition can be confused with a stomach ulcer, heartburn, or gas build-up. Sometimes, it is even sever enough to seem like a heart attack. Typical treatments for hiatal hernia such as drastically reducing meal portions, sleeping in specific positions, and even surgery. None of these options are nearly as effective as improving the health and strength of the diaphragm muscle. Applied kinesiology techniques can help to strengthen the diaphragm muscles, thus treating the root cause of the condition.

Are you feeling weak or tired all the time? Have you had heartburn, acid reflux, gas bloating, or even symptoms of ulcers or a mild heart attack? If so, you need to see a holistic physician who specializes in applied kinesiology. The real cause of your symptoms may be a weak diaphragm.

3 Ways Aspirin Can Kill You – Just Because It’s Over-the-Counter Doesn’t Make it Safe

Did you know aspirin can kill you?

Despite frequent reminders, many patients are still of the opinion that Tylenol, aspirin, and ibuprofen are all about the same. It makes me cringe every time I hear it. Were you aware that if aspirin were presented to the FDA today it would not be approved for over-the-counter sale? It’s much too dangerous! It might not even be condoned as an anti-inflammatory medication, although its properties as a blood thinner would probably warrant approval as such (i.e., to prevent heart attacks.)

So how can aspirin kill you? Here are the top 3 ways, which are seen regularly in every emergency room.

1. Stomach bleeding. Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. Even though the stomach makes hydrochloric acid on its own, it is not necessarily able to tolerate the introduction of additional acid. Imagine pouring acid on your hand all day. Sooner or later you’d burn a hole through your skin. The same can happen in the stomach, creating an ulcer. Sometimes rather than create an ulcer, the entire lining of the stomach becomes irritated (gastritis). The tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface can be eroded and then bleed. The use of aspirin is one of the most common causes of stomach and other gastrointestinal bleeding. You may not think you could bleed to death from this, but it happens every day. Fortunately, emergency care and blood transfusions have prevented most deaths due to stomach erosion by aspirin.

2. Aspirin allergy. Although nearly everyone understands that a person can be allergic to penicillin, because aspirin is available without prescription, it is perceived as safe. However, many people are allergic to aspirin. A mild case may cause itching and perhaps hives. A moderate case may also cause angioedema, or swelling of the face, hands, and other areas of the body. A severe case can cause swelling in the bronchial tubes and subsequent airway obstruction. This can be a medical emergency that, untreated, leads to suffocation and death.

3. Acidosis. When an overdose of acetylsalicylic acid is ingested, it may poison cellular metabolism, leading to high blood acid levels (metabolic acidosis). Eventually this may result in multiple organ failure and collapse. If the drug is not removed via dialysis, a person can easily die of an accidental or intentional aspirin overdose.

Clearly, taking excess aspirin is like playing with fire. Because a little may not hurt you does not mean taking more is safe. Consult your doctor if you require aspirin on a regular basis. There are many safer alternatives.

Important Facts About Wearing Maternity Support Hose

There are many term of words that are used when searching for maternity panty hose, maternity panties hose, maternity panty and maternity panties. For a women expecting a baby, will be needing one of the following of maternity support hosiery, maternity support stocking, maternity support pantyhose, maternity support panty hose or maternity support hose. An expert on hosiery products, carries a large selection of maternity hosiery products. Read on to get expert advice on maternity hosiery!

Wearing maternity support pantyhose is an important way of taking care of your body during pregnancy. Wearing strong maternity support hose and maternity body shapers will aid circulation problems in the legs, reduce swelling and potentially aid in preventing future varicose veins and other ailments. Varicose veins are swollen veins that may bulge near the surface of the skin. These sometimes squiggly, blue or purple veins are most likely to show up in your legs although sometimes they do appear in other places. Many women first develop varicose veins or find that they get worse during pregnancy. As your uterus grows, it puts pressure on the large vein on the right side of your body (the inferior vena cava), which in turn increases pressure in the leg veins. Veins are the blood vessels that return blood from your extremities to your heart, so the blood in your leg veins is already working against gravity. By wearing maternity support hosiery, with doctor’s guidance, it will help prevent varicose vein swelling.

The changes in your body and extra weight by the growing infant’s body may cause you to have leg problems including edema, varicose veins, circulation issues, and leg pain. Wearing maternity support hosiery during pregnancy will prevent or ease varicose veins, a common effect of pregnancy and edema. Depending on pre-existing conditions, maternity support pantyhose comes in different compression strengths.

Leg cramps during pregnancy can be caused by calcium deficiency and/or poor circulation. The pressure of the baby on blood vessels and nerves that lead to your legs may also be a factor in leg cramps. Wearing support stockings, maternity support hose, resting with your legs elevated and exercising moderately will help decrease your leg cramps.

Pregnancy also increases the risk of vein inflammation with formation of blood clots (thrombophlebitis). This can destroy valves (leading to varicose veins). It would be a good idea to ask your doctor to prescribe a maternity support pantyhose or maternity support hosiery to assist with your leg blood circulation.

Most leg problems are due to poor circulation since your blood and veins need to work against gravity to get the blood back up to your heart. During pregnancy, though, your expanding belly, coupled with the extra pressure your baby puts on your body causes your veins to dilate and work much less efficiently. As your pregnancy progresses, you’ve probably learned to accept that your feet and ankles will always be swollen by the end of the day, your nightly leg cramps will routinely wake you up and those varicose veins may just be unavoidable. While all of these discomforts of pregnancy are normal, imagine if you could stop or even prevent them just by wearing maternity support pantyhose.

Maternity support hosiery, known as graduated-compression stockings, work best and are available from maternity stores, or online. These maternity stockings are twice as thick as normal pantyhose. Tight at the ankle, they get looser as they go up the leg, making it easier for blood to flow back up toward your heart. As a result, they help prevent swelling and may keep your varicose veins from getting worse. Put on maternity pantyhose before getting out of bed in the morning, while you’re still lying down, to prevent blood from pooling in your legs, and keep them on all day. Wearing graduated compression stockings has been clinically proven to effectively prevent varicose veins and blood clots. It even relieves many uncomfortable symptoms, which occur in your legs during pregnancy. Maternity support hose may also avoid fatigue and heaviness.

Maternity compression stockings are not your typical pair of nylon stockings. A medically accepted way to treat a host of leg discomforts, medical compression hosiery is a great alternative to surgery when it comes to relieving minor to major leg issues like leg cramps, varicose veins and swelling. Regular support hose don’t help the efficiency of the calf muscle pump. Non-graduated compression may actually cause more harm than good by creating a tourniquet effect. Maternity support hosiery provides a safe and effective pregnancy support.

Made of soft, breathable fabric, comfortable compression stockings will help keep your legs healthy all through your pregnancy. Maternity support hose work by promoting circulation and the return of blood back up to your heart through the venous system. They apply gradual amounts of pressure to your leg, with the most compression occurring at your ankle and lessening the further up the leg you go. While maternity compression hose may sound similar to a tensor bandage, it is not the same thing. In fact, using a tensor bandage to relieve swelling or leg pain may actually make the problem worse by cutting off your circulation completely.

If you have a family history of varicose veins or if you develop them during pregnancy, the best course of action would be wearing maternity support stockings. It would not be possible to depend on the over the counter maternity support tights or maternity support hosiery.

If you need a maternity support stockings personally fitted, then you will need to see a vein specialist.

Maternity support stockings and maternity support hosiery are recognized as a medically accepted device. Therefore, many insurance companies will cover the cost of the stockings as long as you have a doctor’s prescription. Although support hose are a much cheaper and more convenient form of treatment compared to surgery for varicose veins, they are typically much more expensive than regular pantyhose.

Feel free to browse around in our maternity support hosiery product page by visiting LegLuxe and you will also find maternity compression hosiery in that group as well.

Top 5 Due Diligence Mistakes Made in Commercial Real Estate

It’s really a lengthy and complicated process to find an ideal commercial space for your business, and if it’s not pursued in a proper way, it can cost you lots of money and also end up in a contrary place. So, when it comes to leasing an office space or any other commercial space for your business, it’s very important for you to have a strategy and ensure that you are making a good decision based on the needs of your company. Below mentioned are a few most common due diligence mistakes that the tenants should be careful about.

  1. Incorrect Property Valuation: One most common mistake made by tenants while leasing a commercial space is that they don’t valuate the property correctly. This might lead to lots of misunderstandings which would finally end up with a wrong deal. So, just make sure that you really are conservative when it comes to underwriting a deal. Check for sales competitors and other properties available in the market by getting in touch with the most active commercial agents.
  2. Not Understanding Lender’s Underwriting Requirements: Before spending your valuable time, money and energy conducting due diligence, make sure that you have a prior discussion with the lenders about the loan amount they would put on your property. Because, these days the lenders have been very conservative and they consider lots of things like the physical condition, intended use, sale and lease comparable, environmental issues and so on. So just check with the lenders before taking it too far down the road.
  3. Not checking if the Property Complies: These days,it’s not at all uncommon that a buyer gets to know that the property doesn’t meet the compliance of building after purchasing it. The buyers usually get to know about it when the city inspector comes to check if there’s any infarction associated with the property. So, it’s always a good idea to have an architect, planner or the contractor to inspect the property and discuss the issues related to compliances during the due diligence period.
  4. Assuming There Are No issues: Usually the buyers or tenants who are in a hurry to get into a property make this mistake. They just want to get settled in a space which makes them assume that there are no issues. But sometimes the leases can have tripwires like contraction provisions, cancellation provision, fixed option rents, etc. As a tenant you must be aware of these provisions as it can put you in a bind making you devalue the property. So if you are not familiar with the commercial real estate leasing, it’s good to have an attorney who can help you in reading the lease.
  5. Not Spending Time at the Property: When you are about to buy a property or leasing it, it’s not just enough if you take a bland look at it as it’s something that impacts your business heavily. Make sure you do a thorough round up going there at different times in a day; this gives you a better idea of what goes on there at the property. Sometimes it may also change your mind and the decision of buying the property. You won’t just know what’s going to be hidden; may be the moulds or the fire issues in some units to name a few. Spend enough time at the property and make sure that it’s ideal for you.

Many commercial real estate investors are not aware of the things that they are unaware of! The above mentioned points surely give a brief idea and they’ll also get to know the things they need to follow while looking out for a commercial space to set up their business.

STD’s, Cardiomyopathy and Wilt Chamberlain

He was the greatest basketball player and possibly the greatest athlete who ever lived. The 63-year-old Wilt Chamberlain was reported to have died of a heart attack, but that tells you nothing. You are supposed to ask why the world’s greatest athlete would die of a heart attack?

He was born in 1936, in Philadelphia. He was 6-11 when he entered Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School, led them to three public school championships and two all-city titles, Chamberlain became one of the most recruited players ever with more than 200 colleges interested, scored more than 100 points in a single National Basketball Association game and averaged more than 30 points a game throughout his professional career. However, when he was in high school, he was the best high school quarter miler in the United States and ran under 48 second. He also high jumped over 6 feet, five inches and was the best shot putter in Pennsylvania. He remained active after his NBA career and was considered an outstanding volleyball player. He also ran in the Honolulu marathon and competed in a 50-mile race in Canada.

Long after his career ended, Chamberlain made news by claiming in an autobiography that he had had sex with 20,000 women. Let’s see how good you are in diagnosing disease. Chamberlain’s health first became an issue in the 1960s, when a former coach told the news media that the star player might have had a heart attack before the 1964 season. But Chamberlain denied it. In 1992, when Chamberlain gathered with former teammates for a halftime ceremony marking the anniversary of their 1971-72 NBA championship, he had to leave early because he was having trouble breathing. He was admitted to a hospital and found to have an irregular heart beat. He was released from the hospital after three days wearing a heart monitoring device.

During his last years, he was diagnosed as having cardiomyopathy which means that his heart was too weak to pump blood through his body and he lost 50 pounds in the months prior to his death. There are three causes of a weak heart muscle. Lack of nutrients, blocked arteries, and infection.

You can suffer from a nutritional deficiency such as beriberi caused by lack of the vitamin thiamine or pellagra caused by lack of the vitamin niacin. This is almost impossible today in North America. The second possible cause of a failing heart is blocked arteries caused by arteriosclerosis and he did not have a very high cholesterol and he did not have arteriosclerosis. The third possibility is an infection in his heart caused by such bacteria as chlamydia and mycoplasma.

The fact that he lost 50 pounds and was unable to go anywhere in the last months of his life point to a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, that’s heart muscle damage, caused by infection with chlamydia or mycoplasma, from making love to considerably less than the 20,000 women that he claimed. That comes to 500 women per year, or 10 different women per week for 40 years, which would make the world’s greatest athlete, the most prolific lover of all time. Cardiomyopathy is often caused by chlamydia.

Chamberlain’s body was cremated, so we will never know for sure how he died.

How to Prevent and Even Reverse Heart Disease in Dogs

Has your dog just been diagnosed with a heart complaint? Don’t despair! Although heart disease in dogs is incurable, it can be managed and in some cases much of the damage can be reversed. There are natural remedies and herbs for dogs that can help prevent heart disease and improve the health of dogs who may have already sustained some heart damage. So let’s  have a look at how we can do this.

Prevention is definitely better than cure when it comes to heart disease. Is your dog eating a healthy diet? If not this may be the cause of his deteriorating health. Rather than beating yourself up about this, start learning about healthy foods for dogs and what to feed your dog to improve his health and aid his recovery.

Conventional medications for heart disease in dogs can have some serious side effects. Making the effort to find a holistic vet who can point you towards a natural cure is well worthwhile. A holistic vet can prescribe herbal remedies such as hawthorn and dandelion which can both help strengthen the heart muscle and prevent harmful fluid build up.

Make sure you make the time to take your dog for his yearly vet check up even though he seems healthy. If you notice your dog coughing, especially during the night time or after exercise, then you should waste no time in taking your dog to the vet as this may be one of the symptoms heart disease.

If your dog lacks energy and can’t seems to keep up while you are walking or there seems to be a difference in the way they’re breathing, then take them to the vet without delay. Other serious symptoms of heart disease in dogs include weight loss for no apparent reason, difficulty breathing and fainting.

Moderate exercise is very important and can be as simple as taking your dog for a walk two or three times a week. If your dog is already affected by heart problems allow him to set the pace. Stop or slow down if he seems very tired or starts to cough.

If your vet has diagnosed your dog with cardiac ischemia, which is a shortage of blood supply to the heart, or reperfusion, which is damage to the heart tissue, then CoQ10 will help your dog. CoQ10 is a natural co-enzyme which will not only help to slow down the progression of heart disease in your dog, but will also improve his overall health. We all know that a happy dog is a healthy dog.

In order to prevent bad cholesterol (LDL) in your dog and to help your dog’s heart health, then we recommend some good old Vitamin E. You should give your dog Vitamin E in 200-500 IU each day mixed with his food.

Another recommended natural supplement for heart disease in dogs is L-Carnitine which will help with deterioration of the heart muscle. If you combine L-Carnitine with another supplement called Taurine, it will help to improve your dog’s life expectancy as well. This can be given in the amount of 500-2000 mg daily.

So to conclude, it is very easy to keep your dogs heart safe, as long as you pay close attention to his health and remember to take him to his annual visit to the vet each year (or straight away if something seems wrong). Remember, heart disease in dogs can happen fast and without warning, so please be watchful for any of the above symptoms.

Growth Of Communalism In India

Communalism is a modern phenomenon. It had its roots in the modern colonial socio-economic political structure. Communalism emerged as a result of the emergence of new, modern politics based on the people and on popular participation and mobilisation. It made it necessary to have wider links and loyalties among the people and to form new identities. This process was bound to be difficult, gradual and complex.

This process required the birth and spread of modern ideas of nation, class and cultural-linguistic identity. These identities, being new and unfamiliar, arose and grew slowly and in a zig-zag fashion. Quite often people used the old, familiar pre-modern identity of caste, locality, sect and religion to grasp the new reality, to make wider connections and to evolve new entities. This has happened all over the world. But gradually the modern and historically-necessary identities of nation, nationality and class have prevailed.

Unfortunately, in India this process has remained incomplete for decades. In particular, religious consciousness was transformed into communal consciousness in some parts of the country and among some sections of the people. In particular, modern political consciousness was late in developing among the Muslims. As nationalism spread among the Hindus and Parsis of the lower-middle class, it failed to grow equally rapidly among the Muslims of the same class.

Hindus and Muslims had fought shoulder to shoulder during the Revolt of 1857. In fact, after the suppression of the Revolt, British officials had taken a particularly vindictive attitude towards the Muslims. With the rise of the nationalist movement the British statesmen grew apprehensive about the safety and stability of their empire in India. To check the growth of a united national feeling in the country, they decided to follow more actively the policy of’ divide and rule’ and to divide the people along religious lines, in other words, to encourage communal and separatist tendencies in Indian politics.

For this purpose they decided to come out as ‘champions’ of the Muslims and to win over to their side Muslim zamindars, landlords and the newly educated. They also fostered other divisions in Indian society. They promoted provincialism by talking of Bengali domination. They tried to utilize the caste structure to turn non-Brahmins against Brahmins and the lower castes against the higher castes. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where Hindus and Muslims had always lived in peace, they actively encouraged the movement to replace Urdu as the court language by Hindi.

In other words, they tried to use even the legitimate demands of different sections of Indian society to create divisions among the Indian people. The colonial government treated Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs as separate communities. It readily accepted communal leaders as authentic representatives of all their co-religionists. It permitted the propagation of virulent communal ideas and communal hatred through the press, pamphlets, posters, literature and other public platforms.

This is a very vast issue. We should think about it deeply and use our own mind to come to any decision.

Advanced Cancer – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Advanced cancer is a stage when the cancer growth has progressed to a level which has been deemed as incurable. The focus in this situation is more on the symptoms. Cancer in different sites in the body may have predominantly differing symptoms. However, pain, easy fatigue, loss of weight and appetite, vomiting, weakness, breathlessness and constipation are common symptoms in most advanced tumors. Treatment is usually palliative, i.e. to reduce symptoms and to possibly control further spread of the tumor.

Ayurvedic medicines have the potential for a substantial contribution in the management of both early and advanced cancer. Ayurvedic treatment can control the cancerous growth, reduce its size, prevent its spread to different parts of the body, reduce pain and other symptoms, improve survival and improve the overall quality of life of the patient. The Ayurvedic management of cancer consists of treating the specific tumor, giving medicines to treat the tissues involved and also giving symptomatic treatment for different symptoms as and when these arise. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Tamra-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Sutshekhar-Ras, Kamdudha-Ras and Praval-Panchamrut-Ras are used to reduce tumor size and growth. Medicines like Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Drakshasav and Punarnavadi-Qadha are used to prevent the spread of the tumor through the blood and lymphatic system.

Medicines like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Vaikrant-Bhasma, Raupya-Bhasma, Mukta-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used to boost the immune system of the body and maximize its potential in fighting the tumor. Herbal medicines which can also be used for this purpose include Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Pippali (Piper longum) and Triphala (Three fruits).

As per the traditional principles of Ayurvedic treatment, medicines which act on the seven body tissues (dhatus) as well as those medicines which have a specific action on different organs of the body are very useful in treating different types of cancer. These medicines include Pippali, Arjun (Terminalia Arjuna), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Chirayta (Swertia chirata), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Chandan (Santalum album), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis). While these medicines have a specific action of their own, they also carry anti-cancer medicines to the target organ or tissue.

Symptomatic treatment is given with different medicines in such a way that they do not interfere with the main anti-cancer therapy. Pain can be controlled using medicines like Vish-Tinduk-Vati, Agni-Tundi-Vati, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Godanti-Bhasma, Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Triphala-Guggulu and Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu. Easy fatigue, weakness and loss of weight can be treated using medicines like Ashwagandharishta, Draksharishta, Ashwagandhadi-Churna, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Vasant-Kusumakar-Ras and Siddha-Makar-Dhwaj-Ras. Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting can be treated using medicines like Laghu-Sutshekhar-Ras, Shankh-Vati, Chitrakadi-Vati and Lashunadi-Vati. Breathlessness can be treated using medicines like Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Bruhat-Kantakari (Solanum indicum), Som (Ephedra vulgaris), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa) and Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa). Constipation can be treated using medicines like Triphala, Isabgol (Plantago ovata), Avipattikar-Churna, Gandharva-Haritaki and Swadishta-Virechan-Churna.

A judicious combination of Ayurvedic medicines can thus help to control and reduce tumors and improve the survival and quality of life in patients with both early and advanced cancer.

Healing and the Heart Chakra

When most people start studying the mind-body-spirit connection, they realize that the heart helps healing. Unconditional compassion, pure love: intuitively, we know that these vibrations can transform dis-ease into wholeness and bliss. We also sense that a “broken heart” can contribute to illness, and that extreme anger can cause a heart attack. But there’s much more to the heart chakra! As humans, we could study the heart chakra forever because it continues to expand and evolve, but here are some of the most common manifestations:

Major Systems of the Heart Chakra:

Circulatory System

This one’s pretty self-evident to most people. When speaking of the heart chakra, we expect to see the heart as part of it. High cholesterol, heart murmurs, heart attacks: all of these make sense. But the circulatory system also includes the blood itself, which means things like anemia and leukemia. Additionally, the movement of that blood comes into play with varicose veins, cold hands and feet, Reynaud’s Syndrome, and high or low blood pressure.

Some of these conditions straddle other chakras, and they all carry their own unique vibration and set of symbols, related to the individual soul and body in question. To give you an idea of how deeply and beautifully your body can talk, let’s look at something obviously related to the heart chakra: a heart murmur. If you wanted to hear the body’s talk, you could take a few moments to listen – really listen – to what that heart was murmuring! Intuitively, you could commune with the heart and ask what secret hopes, loves or desires it wants to express. Why does it feel compelled to murmur instead of thumping joyfully to the universe? A heart murmur usually sounds like an extra beat or “turbulence” in the blood flow. How do this heart’s natural desires not fit into the normal beat of life? In the case of a weak valve, where might the person be backtracking in life – expressing dreams and then pulling those back, not honoring the heart’s deepest desires?

Science recognizes connections among emotions and stress, and among stress and heart attacks. But these connections exist on all levels and in all disorders. With compassionate attention, the body’s secrets can be unlocked, revealing insights and opportunities for healing on all levels.

Respiratory System

Housed in the chest, the lungs make up a huge part of the heart chakra. I cannot tell you how many times someone calls me with pneumonia, bronchitis, the flu or lung cancer after experiencing a major period of grief. Grief resides in the lungs, and when we don’t fully release our grief, our lungs start shedding tears for us. Excess phlegm and mucus are the tears of the lungs.

Emphysema and asthma often occur when people cannot articulate their grief or when the cause for grief seems too little to justify its full expression. Coupled with this fear of being understood, grief literally suffocates until someone or something intervenes.

Lung cancer tends to come from extreme grief combined with anger/frustration and a sense of utter depletion from imbalanced giving. When Dana Reeve died of lung cancer, many people felt surprised because she hadn’t ever smoked. But lung cancer sometimes appears in long-term caregivers, even (especially) if they felt very close to the one who needed care. Rather than directing the anger at the spouse or child, the anger starts to bubble up at the universe at large: how can a loving God allow such suffering? Why, after all this caregiving, all this love, is their loved one still dying? In the presence of grief, anger and what I call soul-weariness, that love begins to mutate, sometimes into cancer cells.

Immune System

This one surprises many people, but the thymus gland, located under the top of the breast bone, is part of the heart chakra. In children, the thymus gland plays an important role in developing the immune system. In adults, tapping on the thymus gland can “remind” the body to stand strong in the face of infection. All lymph nodes begin with seeding from the thymus gland, which means the emtire lymphatic system begins in the heart chakra. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymph system does not have a pump. It needs regular exercise and/or massage in order to move things around and clean house. By extension, issues with the lymphatic system require self-care, self-love and attention.

Common immune system/heart chakra issues? Allergies, auto-immune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer (especially breast and lung cancer), influenza, AIDS/HIV, Lyme Disease, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Epstein-Barr … Swine Flu … As humans, we are being asked to evolve in a major way through the heart chakra. It should come as no surprise that so many of our biggest killers or most commonly “communicated” illnesses reside in the heart chakra.

Lyme Disease and Chronic Fatigue are sometimes called “seventh chakra issues.” Indeed, they do affect both the heart and crown, one reason that survivors of these types of illnesses tend to become healers themselves. People with extremely wide open hearts often develop compromised immune systems, like their system is too “friendly” to bacteria. A solution is allowing the self to feel completely at one with, and balancing the ebb and flow of love. Too much love out without receiving the equivalent love from self or others can weaken the immune system. The solution is not to send out less but to allow the self to receive more love.

On the flip side – also a generalization – people who struggle with an overactive immune system benefit from backing down judgments of self or others. Allergies occur when the body recognizes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This mistaken attack by the immune system causes the symptoms we associate with allergies. Some people with intense, “incurable” allergies have unresolved past life issues driving the reaction. Bringing those events to light can allow the immune system to stop attacking itself and innocent bystanders like food or pollen.

The Breasts

Breasts are also an important part of the heart chakra, especially for women. Breasts represent mothering, nurturing and the feminine principle. Breast cancer happens when sluggish lymph and toxins stagnate in the breasts. Fibroids and tumors come from things things that “weigh on the chest,” as in “I wish I could get this off my chest.” To support breast health, allow yourself to speak from the heart. And allow yourself to listen. Suppressing the deep longings of the heart or trying to convince the heart that it feels something else can morph into something even less desirable.

Emotional Disorders and Imbalances

Depression, Phobias, Grief, Fear, Sorrow, Anxiety: all have at least one foot in the heart chakra. As the bridge between our three lower chakras and our three upper chakras, the heart picks up on a lot of imbalances from both the gut and the brain. For this reason, cleaning up the diet can affect both physical health and mood; practicing meditation to reduce stress offers the side benefit of opening the heart and radiating joy.

What You Can Do

Spend some time each day connecting with your heart. Focus on your breathing and allow yourself to feel the center of your chest like a tender flower or warm ball of light. Feel that flower or light flicker with your breath. Listening to sacred chants or the harp can move your heart strings, too. Imagine the music flowing out from the center of your chest. Reiki also offers a way to nurture and balance your heart chakra. You can find a certified practitioner or learn how to give Reiki to yourself.

In general, if you have any health issue, you would be wise to ask your heart what it wants to share with you and with the world. As a culture, we have nearly lost touch with the language of the heart, but our hearts continue to cry out in layered songs and symbols.

Listen.

Love.

And do not be afraid.

As Helen Keller once said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.”

Recovering From Shoulder Surgery With Acupuncture

Different types of shoulder injuries will require different types of treatments. While it may be in your best interest to try natural healing options for certain conditions, surgery may be the best suited option in other cases. It is estimated that the average time it takes to recover from shoulder surgery (regaining 75-80% of strength and function) is 6-7 months. In some cases it may take up to a year, with complete recovery taking as long as 2 years. This all depends on the initial health of the individual, the extent of the injury, quality and commitment to rehabilitation, the patient’s diet and modalities of rehabilitation. Using acupuncture and Chinese herbs can shorten your recovery time in each of the phases of rehabilitation. It is possible to get the strength and function of your shoulder back sooner, reduce the pain of the trauma from the surgery, decrease scar tissue and minimize the loss of range of motion, all by using acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas.

Possible shoulder injuries or conditions are fractures, dislocation/subluxation, tears, impingement, tendinitis, bone spurs and bursitis. Obviously, not all of these conditions will require surgery. For the sake of this article the focus is on injuries and shoulder surgeries such as, arthroscopic, rotator cuff repair, Bankart surgery and prosthetic shoulder replacement. All of these surgeries can be greatly beneficial to the patient, but they can also cause great trauma to the area that takes a long time to heal and lots of dedication and time in physical rehabilitation by the patient.

There are certain risks associated with shoulder surgery including vascular and neurological injury, leakage of synovial fluid, increased stiffness and injury to the tendons due to iatrogenic causes (medical mistake). In most cases there are no complications and the patient only has to deal with the normal post-surgical shoulder issues. Shoulder surgery patients typically report pain, stiffness, swelling, decreased range of motion, keloid scarring, loss of strength, numbness and tingling as post-surgical issues. Each one of these issues can be minimized by using acupuncture treatments through the rehabilitation process. Treatments can be started the same day or day after the surgery, if possible. Different herbal formulas can be used to strengthen tendons and ligaments, reduce pain and move the blood (reduces swelling, aides lymph drainage and brings a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area). Make sure to get your herbs from a licensed practitioner to ensure you’re getting the right formula for you. Acupuncture can move you through the 4 stages of recovery faster and get you back to being functional up to 2 months quicker than rehabilitation without acupuncture.

Stage 1 of the recovery process is 5-6 weeks and involves the patient wearing a sling. In this phase, acupuncture can be performed in the areas surrounding the shoulder to increase blood flow to the area, minimize build up of lymph and swelling, keep the immune system high (lowering risk of infection) and lower pain levels. Acupuncture helps your body to release endorphins, which are your body’s natural pain-killer. For those patients who don’t like taking pharmaceuticals, this is a great alternative and can lower your need for prescription pain medications.

Stage 2 involves very minimal movement and therapy on the shoulder. Using acupuncture directly around the damaged shoulder in this phase can promote blood flow to the tendons. This helps to minimize stiffness and reduced range of motion. Stimulation of the surrounding muscles keeps loss of strength and muscle mass to a minimum. Mild electro-acupuncture is an excellent modality at this stage. Use of distal points on the hand ensures nerve conduction is maintained and limits the possibility of extended numbness and tingling in the limb.

Stage 3 encourages more physical therapy and has the patient using weights ranging from 6-10 lbs. Acupuncture is beneficial in this stage to continue nurturing the muscles and damaged tendons. It is also great at preventing the build-up of keloid scar tissue and breaking down any scar tissue that may have already built up. This is important to maintain full range of motion, flexibility and sensations.

Stage 4 is an ongoing rehabilitation to get the patient back to 100% again. If the patient has been compliant and the acupuncturist has done their job properly, this stage should be greatly shortened and the patient should be months ahead of the rehabilitation process.

While some orthopedic surgeries can be avoided using acupuncture and Chinese medicine, it can be used as a complementary service in the rehabilitation process from surgeries too. It can be used before the patient is able to move the arm and go to physical therapy. It can also be used in conjunction with physical therapy. When done properly, by a licensed acupuncturist, your post-surgical recovery time from shoulder injury will be kept to a minimum and as pain-free as possible, with greater range of motion, more strength and less chance permanent damage. Build Muscle and Recover Quickly With Cissus Quadrangularis

Introduction

Often when looking around to try and find a new supplement to build muscle, aid recovery and stimulate muscle growth, people often turn to creatine monohydrate or amino acids such as glutamine, the more ‘well known’ supplements. However there is one supplement which receives less press but is just as effective, Mega Cissus, a high potency source of Cissus Quadrangularis (a perennial plant of the grape family found in India and Sri Lanka.) Here we look at the health benefits and reasons for why you should be thinking about adding Cissus Quadrangularis to your fitness regime and the science supporting it as an effective sports supplement.

Cissus and Muscle Mass

Cissus Quadrangularis is an ancient medicinal plant that was prescribed in the ancient Ayurvedic texts as a general tonic and analgesic, with specific bone fracture healing properties. More recently there have been more research papers published on its anti-glucocorticoid, anti-catabolic, anti-lipase, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties where it has been praised for aiding in everything from fat loss to bone and tendon.

More recently, it has been reported that Cissus Quadrangularis could greatly aid in increasing muscle mass too. When you’re looking to increase muscle mass (muscular hypertrophy) in the gym, you want to load your muscles above their habitual level by lifting a weight and bringing about the appropriate hormonal and chemical conditions that cause your muscle cells to grow. When you lift weights, your endocrine system releases anabolic hormones (i.e. testosterone and growth hormone) but because of the stress your body is under, you may also release cortisol which is bad for building muscle because it can inhibit protein synthesis and stimulate amino acid degradation.

So:

Increase anabolic hormones (testosterone and growth hormone) + reduce excessive levels of catabolic hormones (cortisol) = build muscle

Studies show that Cissus is capable of interacting with the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) by binding to it and acting as a GR antagonist, ensuring cortisol doesn’t bind to the receptor and therefore reducing cortisol’s negative effects and helping your muscle mass development.

How Cissus Quadrangularis can help your bones and tendons

If you train to a high level with regular, intense exercise, you will know that constantly training the body to get stronger, quicker and fitter will sometimes lead to small injuries where the body has just been overworked (the fine line between ‘stimulation’ and ‘annihilation’). For those of you that do pick up a slight injury, Cissus can help with your recovery.

Studies have shown that injured athletes using Cissus saw a significant influence in the rate of fracture healing. Cissus influences the early regeneration of all connective tissues of mesenchyma origin (namely the fibroblasts), the chondroblasts and osteoblasts involved in the healing and quicker mineralisation of the callus. It also delivers nutrients to the injured tissue and, unlike pain relief products, not only soothes the pain of connective tissue injury but also works to repair it.

Regarding bone fractures, it is theorised that Cissus causes less amount of tissue reaction in the fractured area leading to optimum decalcification in the early stage with minimum of callus formation. So deposition of calcium is just enough to join the two broken segments of bone so that it’s recovery happens much faster. Cissus is also shown to cause early gain in the tensile strength of fractured bones by building up the chemical composition of the fractured bone, namely its mucopolysaccharides, collagen, calcium and phosphorus as well as its functional efficiency.

Her Most Famous Painting (The Roots) – Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo, born on July 6, 1907, was an incredibly strong woman and an internationally recognized Mexican painter. She was married to a Mexican painter Diego Rivera, whose artistry she admired. Her work used to carry a competent blend of the Mexican and European cultures. Most of her paintings were self-portraits (55 out of 143), mostly remarkably portraying her pain and sexuality. Kahlo’s “The Roots” is one of her most magnificent works.

In her short span of life, Frida endured what most people cannot even imagine. When she was 19, she met with an accident, with a trolley car. She broke her spinal column, collarbone, ribs, pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, the right foot crushed & dislocated, and a shoulder also got dislocated. She had as many as 35 operations, owing to this accident. To give vent to all her trauma, she transformed her sufferings, on the canvas, as self-portraits, especially “The Roots.” To justify her obsession with self-portraits, she once said, “I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best. I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other considerations.”

“The Roots,” painted in 1943, as mentioned above, was one of her most beautiful and identifying self-portraits. She painted it to mark her reunion with her estranged husband, Diego Rivera, after an undesirable phase of pain and suffering. The painting, in the background of happiness, also displays her feelings about her ‘developed’ physical inabilities in life. Frida had lost her reproductive ability in the accident and carried that incompleteness and pain in her heart. This 12″ X 19.5″ oil on metal work canvassed Frida’s desire to be a part of feminine genesis and to be connected to life like others. It displays her desire of having her own children. Frida Kahlo adored Pedregal’s rough grey rocks in South Mexico and she set them in the backdrop of her painting. The detailed, leafless stems around Frida, in the painting, portray her ‘deliberate’ infertility, her severely injured body, her lost loves, and the other misses of her life.

Sotheby’s auctioned “The Roots” at a record price of $5,616,000, the highest price a Latin Mexican artist ever commanded. Her other popular paintings were, “The Two Fridas,” painted to mark her divorce with Diego, “Tree of Hope,” and “My Nurse and I.” Kahlo’s artistic ability was amazing. She imbibed inspirations from different people, cultures, and her surroundings, blending their essence in her customized, fresh, and distinct style. She competently canvassed not only her physical trauma, but also the life-long psychological one, translating into numerous unexplored ideas and emotions. Frida did not paint dream or fantasies, but her own reality. She truly said, ‘I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint.” The tower of strength, Frida died of her pain on July13, 1954.
