The pain your baby is experiencing in his or her gums may travel to the ears and cheeks. This particular sign is often associated with a baby getting molars, which is why they fuss with their cheeks and ears.
  5. Diarrhea – This particular symptom seems to be up for debate. Some pooh-pooh on this symptom, but some parents swear that this is a common sign of teething. While there is much disagreement among doctors, it is believed by some that excessive swallowing of saliva causes this symptom. It is important to monitor this symptom, and call your pediatrician, if necessary.
  6. Tiny Fever – Some babies develop a small fever when teething, and therefore, it is important to be aware of this symptom in conjunction with other symptoms mentioned. It is important to monitor your baby’s fever and contact your pediatrician if it persists.
  7. Not Sleeping Well – Sweet dreams are replaced with the nightmare of teething. The teething process doesn’t sleep, which means your crying baby could be up at night too. If you find that your baby is up for Late Night with David Letterman, this could be a clue that your baby is teething.
  8. Cold-like Symptoms – Simple cold-like symptoms, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, may be an indication that your baby is teething. These cold-like symptoms may result from your baby’s fussing more with their mouth their hands in their mouth more often. Like the diarrhea and fever, it is important to monitor this symptom, and contact your pediatrician, if necessary.

Relocation Depression – Some Symptoms and Strategies to Overcome It

After the boxes are unpacked, the phone is set up, and you’ve sorted out all the other necessities, you may find yourself depressed after a move to a new place. The hardest part of this is that often times, you don’t even realize you’re depressed. You’re so focused on all you have to get done, that when that initial whirlwind passes, you may end up sitting down to relax, only to find that several months have gone by and you’re in a rut. If you’re the trailing spouse, and have no job lined up, this is something you especially need to watch for.

What can end up happening is that you mourn the life you left behind – the great friends and family you have, perhaps a job you loved. And, you may not realize this process is going on, because your conscious mind keeps saying, “I’m in Sydney, I should be excited. I just have to try harder.”

One of the dangers of not preparing for possible depression is that, when you first arrive someplace new, it’s like being on vacation. In fact, if you’re moving someplace that excites you, you may be so caught up in this excitement, that you will convince yourself of how perfect everything there will be. You’ll look forward to a change of pace. When you arrive, it’s like starting a new relationship – everything is new, different, and offers the opportunity for discovery. Once your mind wraps around the fact that you’ll be staying there for a while, however, the romance tends to wear off, and leave you shocked, and feeling a little trapped.

Here are some signs to look out for that could mean you’re depressed:

  • You find yourself sleeping a lot – if you normally sleep 6 – 8 hours and find that you’re suddenly sleeping 12 or more hours, especially during the daytime, this is a main indicator of depression.
  • When you’re awake, you feel tired, and sluggish. You notice that even after a full night’s sleep, you just can’t get yourself going.
  • You don’t feel like leaving the house. You spend most of your time at home, in front of the TV. You reject suggestions from loved ones. In fact, when people make suggestions to you about things you can do, or places you can go, you feel pushed and automatically say no.
  • You have no interest in doing anything.
  • You have no desire to socialize or meet new people.
  • The only happy moments you have are when you plan a trip to go back home, or talk to your friends back home.

The Expats and trailing spouses I’ve spoken to mention that when they became depressed, they didn’t even realize it. They simply thought they were very tired, and they felt annoyed by their spouse trying to push them off the couch. At the same time, they felt like a burden on their spouse, because there was a sense that the spouse wanted time away from them. There’s an interesting discovery I made with several people I spoke to. When they really thought about why they were depressed, they realized that admitting they were happy after moving, made them feel they would have to give up the friends they had back home or dramatically change those friendships. They were so used to contacting these friends in moments of misery, that they were afraid their happiness might mean less contact with friends back home, and possibly not being as close to them.

If you truly cannot get yourself out of this rut, you should make a commitment to see a therapist to at least find some ways to manage the depression so you can begin to come out of it.

The good news is that there are several techniques you can use to avoid the depression from starting, or to get yourself out of a rut if you’re already there, provided you are willing to move forward and allow yourself to be happy.

The best thing you can do is adopt some strategies, before you leave, to try and prevent depression from setting in at all.

Make contacts before you leave. You can do this by asking your current friends and family to refer you to contacts they have, and put the word out that you’d love some names and numbers of friends they have living in the host city you’re relocating to.

Reach out to your new-found contacts immediately. Instead of waiting till after you arrive, make that phone call, or send that email NOW. Let them know who referred you to them, and that you’ll be moving out their way soon, and you’d love to make plans to meet them after you arrive.

Research what activities are available in your host city. Learn about all the places that offer adult continuing education classes. Ask your new contacts what activities or groups they are aware of that might interest you.

Consider volunteering. Find out what volunteer opportunities exist. This is not only a great way to meet new friends, but if you’re also helping other people, it may be a source of enormous satisfaction for you.

Join a community. Do a Google search. If you’re moving to San Francisco, research “Expats in San Francisco” and see what you find. Facebook also offers many Expat groups. If you join a group on Facebook, you can also join forums that might be of help.

It’s best to start all these ideas before you leave, because then, when you arrive, you’ll have a network already started, so you don’t have to feel like you’re at the beginning of this process. If you have already moved, though, then now is as good a time as any to start.

A phobia is an overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation that poses little real danger. A phobia is a long lasting illness that can cause intense physical and psychological distress and can affect a person’s ability to function normally at work or in social settings. Since phobias usually develop at an early age, it is important for parents to talk openly about fears and to pursue positive approaches to fears and phobias, so as to help prevent their children from falling victims to these conditions. Cocker Spaniels are affectionate and sociable. They are energetic and, generally, happy animals. However, this happiness is, to a great degree is contingent upon human companionship. Cocker Spaniels are not likely to remain happy if left to spend a great deal of time alone.

Some cockers may seem a bit “down in the dumps,” if left alone regularly or for an unusually long period of time; others, may exhibit full-blown symptoms of Cocker Spaniel separation anxiety.

Before describing these symptoms, it is important to point out that when a cocker, or any dog, is experiencing separation anxiety, they are not intentionally “getting back at you” for leaving them. They are basically in a state of fear or panic. They aren’t considering, or even aware of, the “goodness” or “badness” of their behavior. They are simply reacting. Punishing or scolding your Cocker Spaniel will only make things more difficult for both of you.

There are several behaviors that may indicate that your cocker spaniel is experiencing separation anxiety. It may seem endearing, and indeed be flattering, when your doggie follows you from room to room. Maybe he or she just loves you lots-n-lots-which I’m sure the pup does-but it could also be a sign that your Cocker is afraid of you leaving and doesn’t want to let you out of its sight.

It is also adorable and flattering when pets greet us with great enthusiasm when we return after being gone for several hours. Some days, it can be nice to know someone is glad to see us! However, if your Cocker Spaniel goes ballistic when you return from a quick trip to the mailbox, there could be a problem.

If your cocker is normally housebroken but regularly urinates or does other business indoors when left alone it could be a reaction to the separation, providing it’s for a reasonable amount of time, and your pet has been let out to go prior to your departure. Again, this is not your pet’s way of punishing you. It is a reaction to stress.

Dogs, including Cocker Spaniels, who suffer from separation anxiety may sometimes cause minor to significant property damage through destructive actions such as (nervous) chewing and/or scratching at doors and windows in an attempt to break free and track you down, like a furry little stalker.

They often vocalize their distress by barking, whining, and even howling while you are gone. If there is sufficient distance between you and your neighbors, this isn’t much of a problem for your neighbors; but if you happen to live in a duplex or apartment, it is not so good!

What can you do about Cocker Spaniel separation anxiety? You love your Cocker Spaniel but feel frustrated and the stress is getting to you. Don’t give up help is on the way.

The following are suggestions that will help you with Cocker Spaniel separation anxiety. There are many more suggestions trainers can provide, but for now this would be a good start. The important thing to understand and remember is that separation anxiety is correctable. A key point is ensuring that your Cocker Spaniel gets plenty of exercise and to be persistent in you retraining for normal behavior.

1) The very first thing to do is to confer with your veterinarian. They can run some test and eliminate any underlying disorders or medical problems. Dogs, like people, can often be treated with the same anti-depressant and anxiety medications used by some humans for anxiety disorders. Before medicating your dog it would be sound advice to confer with a trainer regarding your Cocker Spaniel separation anxiety issue as well.

2) Gently soothe your Cocker Spaniel before leaving and use the same words each time so that your dog eventually becomes familiar with the phrase and what it means.

3) Leave clothing or bedding with your scent in a pile on the floor for your cocker to sleep and/or roll in. An old blanket works fine.

4) Do not attempt to excite your dog when you return from being out. Wait a couple of minutes after you return to give your dog attention.

5) Consider crate training. However, make sure to properly crate train the pup before attempting to confine your pet for extended hours. Crate training has many benefits but keeping your pup locked up all day is not one of them.

6) Leave a radio (talk station) or television on. Hearing human voices may calm your dog by allowing him/her to believe there are people near.

7) Desensitize your cocker spaniel to your absence by gradually and incrementally increasing your time away (within reason).

8) Dog sitting is a very viable and affordable alternative. A dog sitter will visit your pup on a set schedule during the day affording some playtime and relief. If you are going on vacation or a business trip, check into a Cocker Spaniel Rescue group. Many times members provide dog sitting services at their own homes at very reasonable prices.

9) Do not punish your dog it will only increase the problem and cause confusion with the pup.

10) Have patience and continue taking the corrective measures. Many dogs improve dramatically with-in a reasonable amount of time.

A simple solution that has work for many people is to crate the pup for no longer than four hours. Before crating take your pup outside so it can relive itself and get a little exercise. Ensure the crate has soft bedding, water available and some enticing toys. Leave a radio on. Lure the pup into the crate with a treat. I have actually have had dogs that would enter the crate by themselves if they thought I was leaving the house. Exit slowly and you are on your way to solving Cocker Spaniel separation anxiety.

Stephen King’s Insomnia

Stephen King’s Insomnia was first published in 1994 and like a number of King’s other novels, it is set in the state of Maine and in the fictional town of Derry. The genre of this book is not traditional horror but rather a supernatural or sci-fi thriller. Other aspects of the book are also somewhat unfamiliar to King’s normal offerings, firstly the book is very long at over 800 pages in length and also the main characters are all in their 60’s and older.

Even though Insomnia is in the supernatural or science fiction genre, King still manages to address a number of important issues whilst continuing uninterrupted with the book’s main story. Subjects such as abortion, domestic violence and women’s rights are all covered in such a way as not to detract from the entertaining storyline.

The plot of Stephen King’s Insomnia is rather slow to get going and things don’t really pick up pace until at least 100 pages in but this allows King to really create a cast of believable characters that the reader can empathize with throughout the novel. Ralph Roberts who is a retiree starts to have problems with insomnia and the condition deteriorates as he manages to get less and less sleep until he can’t sleep at all. Ralph starts to see things that aren’t able to be seen by other people such as people’s energy fields or ‘auras’ and alien beings that he calls ‘little bald doctors’ as a result of their appearance. Ralph also discovers that Lois Chasse, a woman he has feelings for is also able to see these alternate planes of reality and the alien creatures.

As with many of King’s books, one of the main themes of Insomnia is the fight of good versus evil and in this particular case the hero is Ralph Roberts who is a retired widower and a very ordinary and believable character who faces up against the Crimson King and his followers. There are a number of highly entertaining twists as King develops the plot, one in particular where Ralph is shown a piece of the future and has to make a life altering decision based on the vision, prompting the reader to question individual morality against self-preservation. As with many of King’s novels the ending isn’t all happiness however as the main protagonist is killed and is accompanied by the consoling remark that at last Ralph can rest.

Stephen King’s Insomnia had a very important part to play in the progression of King’s series of books because when Ralph defeats the Crimson King ultimately saving the life of the young boy Patrick Danville, it sets the direction for King’s Dark Tower series. Although the first novel in the Dark Tower series was published in 1982 and there were 3 books before Insomnia was even written, Insomnia introduces the reader to the pivotal character of Danville in the future Dark tower books.

Insomnia may not be a traditional Stephen King novel, it’s length, character composition and storyline pace are somewhat different to many of his other books, it is undoubtedly an enjoyable and thoroughly entertaining read.

Having even just one wart in a noticeable place can be an embarrassing burden, and warts in more discreet spots often hurt or cause problems for many people. Warts are caused by viruses, and their transmission is often unpredictable. Aside from heat and freezing, there are several techniques that are more gentle, although they can take slightly longer to work. Soap and water is one such technique. Cleaning the wart with warm, soapy water, then using a nail file to grind down the wart will work well to excellently depending on the amount of pain one can tolerate during the wart grinding. After one has taken it down as far as they can physically, they should apply a pinch of sea salt to the wound, and tape over it. Three to four days later, the wart will be gone. For foot wart (plantar wart) removal, treatment is usually the same as on the hands. One technique, however, that is often used on the feet is duct tape. Keeping a piece of duct tape over a wart for several days is a simple way to diminish its appearance quickly over time.

Everyone gets a wart at some time in their life. While they have no benefit, they also rarely impede upon one’s life, aside from being an eye sore! One should not get overly anxious over the problem, as it is not life-threatening and instead should take steps to remove the wart simply and quickly with a technique that most appeals to you.
