Some oils can cause severe irritation and even provoke an allergic reaction. To prevent this, always blend essential oils with vegetable-based "carrier" oil before applying to your skin. Some common carrier or base oils include olive, almond, hazelnut and grapeseed.

The above list of essential oils and their uses is certainly not exhaustive and the ones mentioned here have healing properties not listed. Also, there are many, many more essential oils available that aid in healing. This is a basic list commonly used and easily found at many local health stores.

While essential oils can be a beneficial aid in post surgery healing ~ as mentioned in the beginning of this article, always speak with your doctor before adding any type of herbal remedies to your healing regimen.

Occupational Therapy For Children With Epilepsy

The Effect of Epilepsy on Development

Epilepsy is the name of a group of conditions where there are electrical disturbances in the brain. Children with epilepsy have the same range of intelligence and abilities as other children. However, learning disabilities, emotional problems, and motor impairments commonly accompany seizures and may be exacerbated by the medications used to assist with seizure control. These complications in the child with epilepsy frequently lead to poor school performance, depression, low self-esteem, and withdrawal, drowsiness or hyperactivity) and behavioural disturbances.

Occupational Therapy Intervention:

  • Doctor referral
  • Evaluation and diagnostic process when seizures are suspected
  • Work with relevant health care staff (speech pathologists, physiotherapists, psychologists), family and teachers for seizure control and modification of lifestyle and activity
  • Look specifically at any problem areas such as using a knife and fork, getting dressed, writing etc. This may involve recommending specialist equipment like adapted cutlery, kitchen equipment, specialist seating, bathing and showering equipment
  • Coping skills for dealing with social and psychological stresses of seizures and unanticipated vocational change
  • Compensatory techniques for long term difficulties and to reduce the risk of injuries
  • Modify work or home environment that will support the child and the seizures
  • Set up supportive environment that facilitates and promotes autonomy and independence
  • Encourage and assist with organisation and preparation for participation in sporting and social activities
  • Consider providing protective helmets or pad aspects of the environment, if required.

What is Areata Alopecia?

Alopecia Areata is the name given to a condition where round bald spots appear on your skin and scalp. The hair loss is very sudden and quite often drastic. Alopecia is a disorder that causes a patient's immune cells to attack their own hair-growing tissue for unknown reasons. Usually a trigger is needed to start the process (often in the form of a virus)

There are three basic stages of Alopecia Areata:

1. Sudden hair loss. The patient will notice a bald spot. Which may appear minimal at first.

2. The bald area will enlarge; hair loss will increase in the immediate area of sighted balding.

3. New hair will grow in place of the lost hair. This process is different for everyone. Hair may start growing in a matter of weeks, months, sometimes more than one year. Neverheless, it's very rare that hair does not grow back.

Not Just the Scalp

Patients who start losing hair from their body (including eyebrows and eyelashes) are very wrinkled. They have every reason to feel this way. Alopecia Areata acts in such a way that it's very unnatural. But these patients are not alone in their experiences. Most patients do not realize that the symptoms that they're experiencing are all attributes of Alopecia-a temporary condition.

Common Misconceptions:

While many patients blame stress, medication, and poor diet; there is not any clinical proof that these claims coincide with the balding disorder. Unfortunately, doctors do not know why a patient's immune cells turn on the body and cause this condition. Despite this lack of information, studies do show that Alopecia Areata commonly occurs in patients who family members have had the condition. Alopecia Areata is not contagious.

Treatment:

While patience is an important asset with this condition, your physician may suggest cortisone shots (which promote and stimulate hair growth). Although Cortisone shots have been very successful with Alopecia patients, these shots are very painful. The average patient who opts for this treatment receives twenty to thirty shots into each patch, once per month. This treatment is only effective for the immediate area that has been injected. It does not assist hair growth in other bald areas.

Unfortunately, doctors can not predict if this treatment will work for you. There are no guaranteed results. A prescription cortisone cream is another solution, which can be applied to the bald area. Cortisone cream is not painful and can be easily applied in the privacy of your home.

Treating Otitis Media (Middle Ear Inflammation) With Nasal Irrigation

In the evening of the Lantern Festival, the street outside the clinic was crowded with cheerful people and beautiful lanterns. Winnie, a five-year-old sat quietly on the clinic chair, her dad waited nervously for me to disclose the result. As always, I first checked Winnie’s ears with otoscope, both of her eardrums turned back to the normal gray color; I then picked up the otitis media checker to check her middle ear pressure, as the normal pressure green light turned on, the dad finally relaxed and said: “great! we are finally relieved.” Rest assured, I believe they will have a wonderful festive evening.

Before Winnie came to the clinic, she had already been treated with antibiotics for her chronic sinusitis for over six months. In addition, she also had otitis media with effusion. Since her parents did not want her to have a ventilation tube placement surgery to treat the effusion, I suggested her to try pulsating nasal irrigation with warm saline and additional drugs to treat her chronic sinusitis and effusion. After one month of therapy treatment, her thick yellow-greenish pus symptoms of chronic sinusitis had shown great improvement. However, the progress of her middle ear effusion was not ideal. Her ear drums were still amberish and slightly depressed. The other two children who started the treatment about the same time had already been cured, so I jokingly told her that the others have graduated, and you still have to continue your effort. I suggested her to continue using nasal irrigation for two to three weeks before returning for diagnosis, and finally she graduated too.

Whenever I saw middle ear effusion or acute otitis media patients, I would carefully examine their nose. In addition to taking the appropriate medication on time, I often recommend the patients not to blow their nose too hard, but to frequently use saline nasal spray or nasal irrigation to rinse the nose instead. Patients often feel strange, and some patients even reminded me that their children are here to examine their ears.

In fact, otitis media in children is a complication of common cold and/or sinusitis. The complication has a very high probability of occurrence. According to research statistics, 1/3 of children at the age of three have had three or more otitis media. It is in fact the second most common complication (after upper respiratory tract infection) seen in the clinic. The main cause of otitis media is due to the nasal cavity bacteria travel through the eustachian tube (connecting the nasopharynx and middle ear cavity tube) to the middle ear cavity. Therefore, the real cause of the otitis media or otitis media with effusion is in the nasal cavity. If your rhinitis is treated, nasal passage is clear, eustachian tube is functioning well, then your middle ear effusion will be cured.

After appropriate treatment of acute otitis media, most can be cured within two weeks, but there is still a small number of patients who show no sign of improvement; and the condition worsens and middle ear effusion pus becomes thicker. The color of the eardrum turns amber and depressed. If the child’s middle ear effusion lasts more than a month and pus thickens, it is usually caused by sinusitis or nasopharyngeal adenoidal thickening (adenoidalhypertrophy). At this time, one should be focusing on the sinusitis treatment, which often solves otitis media effusion subsequently. If the middle ear effusion continues after three months of treatment with no improvement, it is usually recommended to insert the ventilation tube to restore hearing and avoid affecting the children’s ability to learn and interact with others.

Many patients often find it very strange, when a child obviously has ear pain, hearing issues, but the ENTs (otolaryngologists) keep asking if the child has nasal congestion, streaming yellow pus and spend a lot of time doing the local treatment of nasal and seemed to forget prescription of ear medications. In fact, for general acute otitis media, if the eardrum has no perforated hole and pus leaking out, using ear medication has no effect in treating otitis media (because the medication will only be in the ear canal but does not go through the eardrum into the middle ear intact.) So when I suggest patients with otitis media to use nasal spray to spray the nose, or use the pulsating nasal irrigation to rinse the nasal cavity, the patients often wonder if the saline water is going into the nose or to the ears. After a detailed explanation, many patients then realize that blowing your nose too hard may affect the middle ear, and using nasal irrigation with saline water is one way of treating otitis media with effusion.

Injections in the Ear Drum to Treat Sudden Deafness

There have been ongoing debating as to whether Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injections would have been the most effective medical intervention in treating Sudden Hearing Loss or if the widely practiced evidence-based medical management of oral steroids would have been a safer choice.

The answer lies on the cause of the hearing loss and the personal preference of the person experiencing the problem. Treating hearing loss is not only limited to different ways of administering steroidal therapy but there are also medical interventions that focus on the root cause of the hearing loss. It is important to determine the predisposing factors of the loss of this sense to prevent progress and worse, complete hearing loss.

Before treating a hearing problem should even be considered, the diagnosis has to be determined by a physician, preferably specializing in the affected area which is the ear. Sudden hearing loss is often described as the decrease of the sense of hearing in a short period of time, occurring in a span of 72 hours or less. This may commonly be mistaken for dullness of the ear due to the common cold and is unilateral or occurs only in one ear. Oral or subjective complaints for patients experiencing the condition sudden hearing loss would include dizziness or nausea, feeling that their world is upside-down and that there is ringing heard in the ears, known as tinnitus.

Having laboratory exams done immediately could provide the accurate medical diagnosis and more often than not, predict the patient's diagnosis. Findings would indicate that there has been a sensorinural hearing loss which when calculated would exceed 30 decibels over 3 contiguous pure-tone frequencies within a 3 day period. Time is of the essence to treat this medical condition since the onset is rapid and the condition deteriorates quickly when left untreated.

Once the diagnosis is established, figuring out the cause can help in treating sudden hearing loss. The exact cause is yet unknown but the pathophysiology of this condition can be traced to:

  • Recent viral infection.
  • Compromise in the body's vascular system.
  • Rupture of the intra-cochlear membrane .
  • Inner ear diseases, which are immune-related.

Pharmacological Interventions include the newly introduced Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection. In administrating this Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection, the preparation is introduced through oral drops or injected through a tiny gauged needle directly to the eardrum. This method has been said to create faster results and restoration of the sense of hearing due to the route of administration. It is said that the potency of the Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injection is increased because it is introduced directly to the affected area.

Special consideration should be given to the patient since this procedure is considered painful and a diversion of some sort might be planned. There is a great risk though that the eardrum might be perforated, so most patients would not have this treatment. The cost of this drug should also be considered since Intra-Tympanic Steroid Injections are expensive.

Oral steroids, such as Prednisone, on the other hand are the drug of choice for many doctors.Ãï½Â Ãï½Â In Treating Sudden Hearing Loss in one ear, this treatment has been administered to many patients known to have suffered the disorder. The less invasive the administration is, the less risk for infection it poses. Long term therapies include monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels since oral steroids cause hypertension and increase in blood sugar. Antiviral drugs can also be given in treating hearing loss caused by viral infection and anti-vertigo can be given to bouts of dizziness or loss of balance.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Makes the Kind of Difference All of Us Can Be Part Of

Peace Prize winner

The surprise choice of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, applied a simple idea and are making a huge difference in the world. By offering small loans to poverty-stricken entrepreneurs in third-world countries, Professor Yunus is providing the means for free enterprise to begin to transform communities and historically nations. In particular, women are benefitting from the availability of micro-credit. Now banks and other institutions elsewhere in the world are starting similar programs modeled on Grameen Bank's initiatives.

In an interview just after learning he won, Professor Yunus said this:
… [P] overty in the world is an artificial creation. It does not belong to human civilization, and we can change that, we can make people come out of poverty and have the real state of affairs. So the only thing we have to do is to redesign our institutions and policies, and there will be no people who will be suffering from poverty …. People come out of poverty every day. So it's right in front of us what happens and it can be done globally, it can be done more forcefully, we can organize more things to go with it, so this is something not theoretical issue, it's a very real issue …. We did not do anything special; lend money to the people so – but they never lent it to the poor people – all we did was lent it to the poor people, and that makes the trick. That makes the change.

(You can get the interview in text or audio at the Nobel website.)

The amazing difference between this strategy and all the failures of the past is that here is someone taking a proactive approach to the seemingly intractable problems surrounding him. His motives are not alt altistic; His bank is actually turning a profit.

Why can not the rest of the world take a lesson from Professor Yunus and either adopt or adapt his strategy? When we do, an amazing societal metamorphosis is possible.

The Proactive Messiah

The Lord Jesus Christ took a similar approach when He "went around doing good" (Acts 10:38). He invested in people, communicating to them that they had value and tremendous potential. He convinced them that He believed in them and that He was willing to sacrifice for their benefit.

As His Follower, Accept His Challenge!

Jesus challenges His followers to do the same in their world. "Give to the one who asks something of you, and do not turn away from the one who would borrow from you. … That you may be sons of your Father in heaven. good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous "(Matthew 5:42, 45).

Your investment need not be money. The person you meet may only need a moment's attention, eye contact, an open smile, a friendly conversation, a ride of a few blocks, or directions in an unfamiliar part of town. You have the opportunity to communicate that you care, that you think he or she has worth as a human being, that you do not view them as an "untouchable."

As they respond to your kindness, warm up to your proffered friendship, it's time to confess Christ. In simple ways that are not abrasive, you can let them know that you follow Jesus, and that makes all the difference in your life. It's because of Him that you see hope – hope for our world and hope for them. Because He has invested in you, you are willing to invest in them.

Be proactive – make a change for the better in the world around you.

Want to go deeper?

Palestine of the first century was filled with beggars. These needy people were constantly asking for money and seeking other assistance. Jesus certainly had the power to wave His hand and heal them all in an instant. Why did not He? Because He had a higher purpose.

He was not content to cure paralysis of the limbs and blindness of the eyes. His intention was to reach down into the soul and bringing healing to a paralysis of the will and blindness of the heart. He did not have to touch people to heal them; He proved that on occasion. His touch was therapeutic on a degree level more than just eradicating disease and deformity. It communicated love, acceptance, and esteem in an awesome, life-changing way.

Do you own study of these passes: cleansing a leper – Mark 4: 40-45; healing a deaf mute – Mark 7: 31-37; blessing the children – Matthew 19: 13-15; and healing two blind men – Matthew 20: 29-34.

Look also at the times when He bought and / or accepted help from someone. What did this communicate? Are we merely patronizing people, or do we see them as our companions in life's journey?

Take a look at these accidents: asking for a drink – John 4: 4-42; asking for a place to stay in a strange town – Luke 19: 1-10; accepting a gift of gratitude from a friend – John 12: 1-8. Read also Paul's command in Romans 12: 14-20, and ask yourself, "What would the world be like if we made this our lifestyle?"

Stammering Help

Children are especially vulnerable when it comes to having problems with stammering. I'd like to go into a little detail about how we can help our children who are suffering from this problem. If we can give them stammering help, it will boost their confidence that they will be able to overcome this condition.

Start by slowing down. This begins with your actions. As children are generally hyperactive by nature, this is easier said than done, but by showing the children that they can gain better control of their stammering by slowing down, they will come around soon enough and slow down.

Along with slowing down activity and not rushing into things quite so fast physically, the child needs to slow their talking down. Along with hyperactive bodies, they have hyperactive tongues, which could wreck havoc on their talking.

Teach the child you are giving stammering help to all about patience, and how having that in abundance will help him or her is able to say what they want to say. There is no hurry when it comes to eliminating their stammering tongue. Patience really is a value. Nothing is ever gained by rushing headlong into it and running the risk of messing it all up. True for kids as well as for adults.

Teach the child to take a moment before they speak to gather their thoughts. Doing so, they can see in their mind what they want to say, and visualize themselves saying it. Kind of like rehearsal for their speech. Take the time here to teach them basic visualization skills. Treat it similar to daydreaming, so that they understand the concept better.

Remember never to force the words out. This will only make things worse. What will provide stammering help is to remember that there is no hurry. No one is timing you when you speak. Relax, get rid of the stress and anxiety surrounding your child, and let them have a go at it. You've been surprised at the results.

Reward the child for their effort. For a child, there is no greater stammering help than a treat. They will even find themselves trying harder, if they know they have a treat waiting for them after a hard session.

What child is not motivated by a candy bar, or even a trip to the movies, for their efforts at improving themselves?

As you give stammering help to these struggling children, be sure to let them know that changes will not happen overnight, but with patience and a little fun, they will be speaking fluently in no time. Let them know that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to, anything at all, and that overcoming their stammering issue is no different than anything else.

Natural Tonsillitis Treatment – Step 2

In treating tonsillitis with natural remedies, one must first clear the 'emunctories' (organs of elimination: skin, liver, kidneys and bowels). Once the toxins are flowing out of the body properly, there is a chance to reduce the inflammatory condition of the tonsils and adenoids. Beyond the use of ice packs to the throat every few hours and the drinking of ice water with lemon or lime juice in it, the next most important step is to stop the pain.

People who have tonsillitis or adenoiditis are really in a lot of pain and may be fearful due to the feeling of not being able to breathe or swallow. The lymphoid tissue that makes up the little organs is roughly about inch inch in diameter but can swell up impressively when infected. The swapping can actually close the airway in several cases.

Natural pain relief measures include things like white willow bark, boswellia or chamomile, which reduce the inflammatory process. Soothing herbals such as marshmallow root and slippery elm bark help with mucous membrane soreness. The more strong and drastic measure would be Tylenol # 3 cough syrup with Codeine, which most naturopathic doctors will reserve as a last-ditch pain relief effort.

There are also homeopathic pain and tonsillitis remedies and acupuncture; these work by increasing the energy flow and helping to push toxins out of the body. Both of these methods of treatment can have quite dramatic and immediate effects on the level of pain and swelling experienced. Both also should be individualized to that particular patient. For instance, while homeopathic belladonna may be recommended commonly for the pain and inflammation of tonsillitis, it may not be the appropriate remedy for that particular person. A homeopathic or naturopathic physician would do a homeopathic interview to determine what would best suite that patient.

The natural methods of treating tonsillitis pain and swelling work far better than conventional medical methods because they do not add to the toxic situation that caused the problem in the first place. Remember, toxin buildup is what affects the tonsils and adenoids; the bacteria and pus come along afterwards. Gargling with salt water, raw apple cider vinegar or other appropriate substances can assist with clearing toxins and reducing swelling also, which automatically reduces pain.

Once the toxin overload, pain and inflammation are handled, step three involves taking care of any opportunistic bacterial, viral or fungal infections. There are natural treatments for all three types of infections and these treatments do not have a negative impact on the gut flora like synthetic antibiotic do. Treating tonsillitis and adenoiditis naturally results in quicker and better healing; hopefully avoiding the necessity of removing the organs in question.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy – PRA – Is Your Dog Predisposed?

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is a group of diseases that cause the retina of your dog's eye to degenerate over time. The consequence is declination vision and extremely blindness. Granted, that's not good news However, nature is a amazing! The majority of affected dogs adjust quite nicely to their situation.

Cause:

Both parents must have the PRA gene for their offspring to be affected. If only one parent carries the PVA gene, their offspring will be carriers of the PRA gene. The disease will re-surface, when any of those offspring mate with another PRA carrier.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a progressive, degenerative disease, where your dog will gradually lose its sight. It affects the retina, the light sensitive area in the rear of your dog's eye.

Diagnosis:

This disease requires a veterinary ophthalmologist. Your regular veterinarian can refer you to a specialist.

The earliest stages can not be diagnosed through a routine ophthalmic examination. However, there are DNA tests recently available; regrettably not for all high-risk breeds. Speak with your veterinarian; the DNA testing procedure for other breeds is progressing rapidly.

Once the disease has progressed, it can be diagnosed through a thorough ophthalmic examination. In later stages of PRA examining the retina with indirect ophthalmoscopy can help the veterinary ophthalmologist reach their diagnosis.

An electroretinogram (ERG) is an additional test that can be done, once the disease has advanced. It measures the electrical response of the retina to a known amount of targeted light stimulation.

If breeding your high-risk dog is your plan; you may want to have your dog certified. When a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist can not find any abnormalities, the dog can be certified free of heritable eye disease through the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF).

Signs to watch for:

Night blindness – Dog visits going from a lit area into darkness.
Hesitates going down stairs
Hesitates in dark hallways
Hesitates going into dark rooms
Hesitates jumping ie. out of a vehicle … especially at night
Bumps into things
Clumsiness
Gradually dog has problems dimly lit areas
Sometimes dog's daytime vision will deteriorate
Finally, blindness

In some breeds, the first signs of night blindness can appear as early as 6-weeks of age. Complete blindness may result by the age of 1 or 2.

For other breeds, night blindness appears between 2-5 years of age. It progresses to total blindness in approximately one year. At first, peripheral vision is lost.

Prognosis:

At this time, there is no cure for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). However, since the disease progresses slowly, most dogs do adjust to their disability.

NOTE: Responsible owners spay or neuter their affected pets. Breeding carriers of the PRA gene only perpetuates the disease.

Breeds Predisposed to PRA include, but are not limited to:

Akita

Canaloplasty: Fixing The Hole With A Straw

"There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole.

Then fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it. "

"With what I'll fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza?

With what shall I fix it, dear Liza, with what?

With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, a straw. "

Does this song sound familiar? Sesame Street incorporated the song as a comedic skit in the 1970s except instead of a "straw," the hole in the bucket was fixed with a "stick". The same holds true with canaloplasty. To fix the leaky bucket (glaucoma), a straw is needed (microcatheter).

Canaloplasty is a recent advancement in non-penetrating glaucoma surgery that gains aqueous outflow without forming a bleb (blister). This approach does not create a full-thickness hole into the fluid-filled space inside the eye (anterior chamber), as with trabeculectomy. Instead, the eye fluid flows slowly through the natural drainage channels with the help of a stent, preventing a rapid and dangerous drop in eye pressure. This gives canaloplasty an excellent safety profile, with early eye pressure stability after surgery and faster recovery time. It also means less activity restrictions and post-operative visits for patients when compared to trabeculectomy.

In addition, canaloplasty and trabeculectomy both resulated in similar reductions in intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication use one year after surgery. Experts agree that canaloplasty is a desirable option for glaucoma patients because it decrees the number of necessary post-operative visits and there are fewer complications to treat. As an added bonus, patients save thousands of dollars in the cost of medications because cancaloplasty reduces the amount of medication patients need in order to control the IOP. The ultimate result? A happier patient who can go back to enjoying life without restrictions.

Although anyone with open angle glaucoma can benefit from canalopalsty, it is especially valuable for patients who are also contact lens wearers, have eyes with significant ocular surface disease (dry eyes), and those individuals with a failed trabeculectomy in the other eye. Because of the improved safety profile, canaloplasty will likely have an increasing role in the surgical management of patients with glaucoma.

What Are Short Sightedness and Long Sightedness – How to Correct Them

Short sightedness is also called nearsightedness or Myopia is a common vision problem when the eyes can focus on close objects but distant objects are blurry. Long sightedness, also call far sightedness or Hyperopia is the opposite of Myopia. The eyes can focus on distant objects but not on close objects.

These vision problems are very common, about 30 percent of Americans are nearsighted and 60 percent are farsighted to some degree.

The shortsighted eyeball is too long causing the image focused in front of the retina. The symptoms of nearsightedness are blurred vision but also eye strain and sometimes headache.

The causes of nearsightedness are partly genetic and partly environmental. A person who constantly does close work could end up with Myopia. You can be diagnosed with nearsightedness at any age even after age 40.

The farsighted eyeball is too short causing the image focused behind the retina. Again the result is blurred image.

Genetic factors play a role at developing long sightedness. If the farsighted eye is not corrected it can get worse. It is possible that one eye nearsighted one eye farsighted.

Myopia and Hyperopia can be combined with other eyesight problems especially with Astigmatism. The causes of Astigmatism are irregular shaped cornea or irregular shaped lens causing an out-of-focus vision.

Narsightedness and farsightedness can be corrected different ways. One solution is eyeglasses. Another solution is contact lenses. Glasses and contact lenses are not going to make your eyes better they just help the eyes to focus on the retina. Eye surgery is another possibility. With eye surgery there are some risks involved.

You can also correct your vision and actually improve your vision with eye exercises. There are nearsighted eye exercises and farsighted eye exercises. Eye exercises can help Astigmatism too.

The Health Benefits of a Simple Egg Sandwich

This is the typical conversation most mornings and sometimes at weekends during snack time, between my wife and my 4 year old daughter.

“Mum, I’m hungry.” “What would you like to eat?” “Egg sandwich.”

She wants a fried egg, cooked in a small dab of virgin olive oil over moderate heat with a sprinkling of freshly ground pepper in a sandwich of freshly baked wholegrain homemade bread. I introduced her to eggs when she was a toddler. Eggs are easy to chew and should be part of a daily diet given to any child of one year old or older. I remember when my daughter as a toddler would eat the egg white first and then pop the whole yolk of a hard-boiled egg straight into her mouth. I still remember when I was a child and my mother used to give me a hard-boiled egg whenever I was hungry. What happened to the good old fashioned days when eggs were given as snacks?

Today, we live in an addiction-prone society. Of all the addictions out there, one of the most deadly is one that is most often overlooked: Junk food. We feed our kids junk food everyday without realising it. We are all guilty of doing this. It is easier to pull out a bag of crisps when a child is hungry rather than have them suffer pangs of hunger. This practice is acceptable for the rare occasions but the problem with our society is that we use this kind of junk food as a common everyday snack.

Did you also know that processed food is junk food? The first image that comes to mind for most people when they hear the term “processed food” is a wrapped burger and a sleeve of fries served over a counter at a fast food joint. But the truth is the very food you have in your cabinets is processed if it’s boxed, bagged, canned or jarred, frozen or dehydrated and has a list of ingredients on the label. Processed foods have been altered from their natural state for “safety” and convenience reasons. Processed foods are more convenient, it’s so much easier to bake a cake by opening up a box, pouring out a dry mix, and adding an egg and some oil than starting from scratch. Instead of making a dish with fresh ingredients, why not pick up a ready-made meal from the store? Isn’t it easier to just pop it in the microwave for a couple of minutes? No pots and pans, no mess! But processed food are laced with colours, those are often inedible, carcinogenic and harmful to the body. Studies have found that food colouring can cause hyperactivity and lapses of concentration in children. Chocolates, colas, flavoured drinks and snack are full of artificial colouring. These are not the only additives in processed foods. Don’t forget the refined salt, sugar, preservatives, flavour enhancers and other so called “beneficial supplements”. Children are especially vulnerable to these unnatural ingredients. Poor diets can slow growth, decay new teeth, promote obesity and sow the seeds of infirmity and debilitating disease that ultimately lead to incurable disease and death or worse make life insufferable.

Did you know that approximately 80% of mothers, who is usually the main parent controlling their child’s diet, considered that their child’s diet was ‘very good/good/healthy’ hence overestimate the quality of their child’s diet. This is extremely worrying, since mothers who do not perceive that their children follow an unhealthy diet will not make the appropriate amendments to improve their child’s dietary habits. Do not be one of these mothers, feed our children correctly and this can only be done by reducing your introduction of processed junk food into their diets. If you think you are one of these mothers who have already done this, think again. Do you feed your child bread from the bakery? Do you give them bottled “freshly squeezed” juice? Do you give them fruit yogurts? Do you spread their toast or sandwich with commercial butter or margarine? Do you use canned tomatoes to make your sauces? Do you feed them frozen sweet corn or peas? Worst of all, do you give them apples that you have not washed? This line of questioning could go on but if you answered “yes” to most of these questions already, your child has an unhealthy diet! (If you want to know more about the foods described above and why they are considered unhealthy read our research in “Is Your Food Killing You?”).

How can a simple egg sandwich contribute to a healthy diet? A fried egg sandwich for instance, consists only of bread, egg and possibly butter and the oil used for cooking the egg. The benefits of homemade bread are described in our article “Wholegrains and their benefits”. The benefits of homemade butter are described in our blog. The egg is a nutrient-dense food, containing high quality protein and a wide range of essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

As a whole food, eggs are an inexpensive and low calorie source of nutrients such as folate, riboflavin, selenium, lecithin and vitamins B-12 and A. Eggs are also one of the few exogenous sources of vitamins K and D. Furthermore, whole eggs are a complete source of proteins as it contains all the essential amino acids needed by the human body. Although, eggs were found to have lower amino acid content compared with beef, the biological value of egg protein is greater. The protein source from eggs are good for the development of skeletal muscle and egg protein is widely used by athletes to increase muscle mass.

We all know the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality from heart diseases. Low levels of DHA have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Chicken feed is now enriched with omega-3 to increase the omega-3 levels in their eggs. Consumption of DHA-enriched eggs can greatly enhance current dietary DHA intakes from non-fish sources and help approach or surpass recommended intakes for optimal human health.

Eggs had fallen in and out of favour through the years mainly due to the perception of cholesterol-rich eggs as a “forbidden food” developed in response to the highly publicized 1970s recommendation by the American Heart Association (AHA) to restrict egg consumption and limit dietary cholesterol intake to 300 mg/d. The dietary cholesterol guidelines are similar in the most recent AHA report;however, their position regarding egg intake has become more specific. It was stated the intake of one yolk a day is acceptable, if other cholesterol contributing foods were limited in the diet. Although an egg contains 212 milligrams of cholesterol, dietary cholesterol has less of an effect on blood cholesterol than once believed. Also, cholesterol is a dietary component that has elicited much public and scientific interest in conjunction with CHD but extensive research has failed to establish a definite link between dietary cholesterol intake and disease progression. In fact, a recent review of years of research has concluded that healthy adults can enjoy eggs without CVD. Many conclusions can be made about the ill-effects of eating eggs but these have to be taken with caution. For instance, one study concluded that eggs were linked to increased risk of Type 2 diabetes but this was not the real story as the result of manifestation of this disease was the associated bad nutrition, mainly sausages and bacon taken with eggs in the individuals tested. The reality of the situation is that although egg intake has steadily declined since the original recommendations in the 1970s, CHD and Type 2 diabetes as well as obesity are still the leading causes of death in the U.S. today.

Eggs have been getting some attention for their role in maintaining eye health and potentially helping prevent age related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United States. This condition develops from long-term oxidative damage caused by the exposure of the eye to intense light. Recent research has shown the value of lutein, a natural pigment or carotenoid in egg yolks. Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macularregion of the retina therefore, because of their chemical properties; these two carotenoids may function to reduce the risk for development of AMD. Epidemiological studies support the fact that those individuals who consumed a greater number of foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin had a lower risk for AMD. Even though eggs contain less lutein than leafy greens, the lutein in eggs is more easily absorbed. One yolk has been found to provide between 200 and 300 micrograms of these carotenoids. In a study that measured the total carotenoid content of several foods, lutein represented 15-47/100 parts of the total carotenoid found in various dark green leafy vegetables, whereas eggs were found to contain 54/100 parts. This suggests that one would benefit more by eating an egg than getting lutein from other sources. Lutein and zeaxanthin are also classed as antioxidants and their intake also may be associated with a decrease in the risk for rheumatoid arthritis, CHD and chronic diseases such as cancer.

Eggs contain many of the minerals that the human body requires for health. In particular eggs are rich in choline, an essential nutrient needed for the normal functioning of all cells. It is especially important for proper liver, brain and neural network, memory development and even in inflammation hence reducing risk of heart disease and breast cancer. The potential public health implications of not consuming enough of this essential nutrient have only recently begun to be examined. There is a significant variation in the dietary requirement for choline. When fed a choline-deficient diet, some men and women developed fatty liver and liver and muscle damage, whereas others did not. This brings in a genetic variability to the need of dietary choline. Nonetheless, it is strongly recommended not just for kids but also for moms-to-be as eggs are a concentrated source of choline without the added calories. To get the same amount of choline found in a single egg (125 mg/72 calories; most of the choline is in the egg yolk – 680 mg/100g), one would need to consume 3 ¼ cups of milk (270 calories) or 3 ½ ounces of wheat germ (366 calories).

Despite all their positive features, eggs sometimes are linked to food safety issues. They do need to be stored and handled properly. Eating raw eggs is not considered safe because eggs may contain salmonella, a type of bacteria that especially is dangerous for the very young, old and immune-compromised. In cases where raw egg is called for in a recipe, ensure that it is pasteurised.

If judged as a whole food, and not simply as a source of dietary cholesterol, the positive contribution of eggs to a healthy diet becomes apparent and far outweighs the myths about dietary cholesterol from eggs. Because eggs are a conventional food containing nutrients that play fundamental roles beyond basic nutrition, their promotion as a functional food should be considered. In conclusion, it is time is right to change the egg message. For the consumer, the most essential image is probably that eggs taste good. Taste is highly important to consumers. The second image needing change is that eggs be recognized as a nutritious food which also has health benefits beyond basic nutrition. The concept of eggs as a ‘functional food’ is new to many and requires a change in the perception of role of eggs in the diet. And finally, the evidence that eating eggs is unrelated to heart disease risk needs to be widely disseminated to health professionals and the public so that everyone can benefit from including eggs in the diet.

How to Treat a Yeast Infection – 5 Tips For Fast Relief

Most women have had to deal with a yeast infection at least once in their lives. Yeast infections are caused by a bacterium in the vagina called Candida, which can cause the yeast in the vagina to overgrow. When this happens it causes the affected area to itch, release heavy discharge and a foul odor. Unfortunately, there are women and even children who deal with chronic yeast infects quite often and it can be difficult having to go back and forth to the doctors all the time. Here are five tips to help cure a yeast infection from home.

Tip Number One: Eat lots of yogurt. Yogurt is known to have many things in it to help with all kinds of ailments. You can also use yogurt as a cream and apply it directly to the infected area. Yogurt has an ingredient known as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, which is naturally found in a vagina that is healthy. There are two ways you can apply the yogurt. You can apply the yogurt frozen and inserted like a tampon or you can use a syringe and apply the yogurt directly into the vagina.

Tip Number Two: You can get an over the counter cream that works well. Although prescriptions tend to work better, there are a few different yeast infection medication kits that you can buy over the counter that actually do work. Some of them come with creams and others come with a capsule that is inserted into the vagina with a syringe.

Tip Number Three: Garlic has anti-body properties that can help cure an infection. A clove of garlic opened and rubbed onto the infected area, do this a few times a day until the infection is gone. If the infection is inside the vagina, garlic cloves can be inserted into the vagina and left for a couple of hours. Be sure to tie a string securely to the cloves or have some other method of removing them safely.

Tip Number Four: Tea Tree oil is an essential oil that has been known to have extremely good anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Tea Tree oil is very strong and needs to be diluted with another carrier oil such as sweet almond oil before applying it to an area like the vagina. You only need a couple drops of the tea tree oil per treatment.

Tip Number Five: Boric acid is another great way to cure a yeast infection. You can get boric acid at your local pharmacy. You will also need some empty gel capsules. Fill the capsules with the boric acid and insert the capsule into the vagina. Do not remove the capsule for a couple of days, then then it should have dissolved letting the boric acid soak into the infection.

These are just five of the great ways of getting rid of yeast infection without having to spend hundreds of dollars at the doctors and on prescriptions. When you do get rid of your infection you should take time and research how to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Make sure you wear loose clothing, this will help the airflow nicely. Also you will want to hold off on eating too much junk food and drinking too many caffeine loaded and carbonated drinks. Buttermilk can help get rid of yeast infections, but it can also help prevent them as well.

The good news is that the causes and prevention candidia is now well understood. With a few lifestyle changes you can ensure that yeast infections are never a problem again.
