How To "Read" Your Fingernails To Prevent Heart Disease, Lung Cancer And Liver Damage

You’ve heard of reading palms and reading tarot cards… but reading fingernails? This may sound like a really weird gypsy sideshow at a carnival, but reading your fingernails is a scientifically proven way to detect certain illnesses that may be brewing in your body. And if you can develop your eye and spot the signs, you could save yourself a whole lot of trouble.

You see, a variety of diseases produce telltale changes in the nails. In the most extreme cases these can include heart disease, respiratory problems including lung cancer and liver damage. Doctors should check your nails as part of a physical examination but in reality few of them do so. So we’ve compiled a quick checklist to help you keep an eye out for abnormalities yourself…

Clubbing: This is where the nail and skin around the nail bed becomes rounded and bulbous. This can indicate respiratory problems such as lung cancer and emphysema, or heart disease.Try this self-test: place your index fingers together so that the surface of each nail is pressed against the surface of the other nail and the first joint of each finger are touching. When viewed from the side, normal nails leave a small diamond-shaped gap at the nail base. Clubbed nails leave little or no gap at all.

Spoon-shaped nails: A healthy nail has a convex shape to it, curving over the nail bed. If the nail dips in the other direction, concave, then it is possible that there is an iron deficiency or anaemia. Nails that are very pale can also indicate anaemia.

Oncholysis: In this condition, the nail separates from the underlying nail bed and can be evidence of an over or under active thyroid.

Red cuticles: Bright red coloration of the skin around the cuticles can be evidence of lupus or other connective tissue disease. Red nails, on the other hand, can be another sign of heart disease.

White spots: White spots on the nails often reveal zinc or vitamin A deficiency. Whiteness all over the nails, however, can be a sign of cirrhosis of the liver.

Dark splinters: The appearance of dark specks in the nails that look like splinters can be a sign of endocarditis – an infection of the heart valves.

Yellowing: Yellow nails that occur in conjunction with swelling of the face and legs can be evidence of chronic sinusitis or persistent lung disease.

Horizontal or vertical ridges

After injury or infection, nails can develop horizontal ridges. Vertical ridges are most often related to old age, possible due to the mal-absorption of vitamins A, B complex and C, calcium, magnesium, zinc and essential fatty acids.

What else can your nails tell you?

Modern palmists believe that as well as the length and course of lines on the hand, knuckles and nails can also be an additional source of information for hand reading. By studying the nails, palmists and chiromancers predict health and future events in a person’s life. According to them, different nail types can give us an indication of personality or even determine your fate! Use this guide to see what your future holds (and, more importantly, judge how people you meet are likely to behave).

  • People with short nails… lack patience, are obstinate and can be narrow-minded. On the flip side they can be exciting to be around too!
  • People with large nails… equal in length and width… are serious by nature. They plan their work perfectly and achieve success in any field.
  • People with nails wider than their length are analytical as well as highly successful in literature, music and academically. Unfortunately, they also enjoy arguing with others…
  • People with long, thin nails… are cheats to the core. They are liars and gamblers and are always dogged by poverty.
  • People with round nails… are kind, frank and well-mannered. They are diligent and prudent people who are self-reliant.

The discoloration and marks on the nails we analysed from a medical stand point above are also interpreted entirely differently by pal readers…

Index finger

A white crescent on the nail of the index finger indicates progress and profit. If there is a black spot on this nail it indicates a sudden loss of wealth and possible a business loss. If the opposite occurs and a white spot appears then the person will have a financial windfall and command increased respect.

Middle finger

A white spot and crescent on the nail of the middle finger means that the person is going to travel, as well as become prosperous. If there is a black spot somebody close to the person will help you in times of trouble.

Ring finger

If there is a white spot on this finger then the person may take an interest in religious activities or study. If there is a black spot the person may suffer harmful allegations.

The Bottom Line: Learning how to read your nails could help you spot early health warning signs… it could even help you spot how people are likely to behave towards you! So keep this guide to hand.

Bull’s Eye Rashes – Lyme Disease and Other Causes

Rashes always grip us with a bit of alerm. With the wide variety of causes, it’s no wonder that individuals seek out knowledge on various skin rashes that they are inflicted with. The bull’s eye rash is no exception. Sometimes referred to as a target, it has various causes and descriptions. Generally all these types of rashes have an outer ring and then center clears to show normal skin color. But what are these rashes and how are they treated?

Erythema annulare centrifugum has also been referred to as figurate erythema, annular erythema, erythema perstans, and erythema gyratum perstans. The rashes are generally pink or red and ring shaped. Although not all rashes in this category will have a distinct round shape. Some may be slightly disfigured. This rash can infect anyone in any age group. It usually starts out as a small raised red blotch that enlarges and then the center clears up and the outer edges for a red crust round ring. In this way it looks like a shooting target on the body. These targets generally appear on the lower body and legs, but can occasionally occur on the arms and trunk. These small targets may enlarge and eventually merge together.

Most often there is no specific reason this rash occurs, although they have occasionally been linked to some diseases. These diseases include infections that are bacterial, viral or fungal such as tuberculosis, Cancer, reoccurring or chronic appendicitis, grave’s disease, or liver disease. On some occasions the target rash has been linked to food like blue cheese or tomatoes, or medications like penicillin. These rashes can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years. Most rashes will disappear on their own; however some doctors will prescribe corticosteroid cream.

Another type of rash with a circle is Erythema multiforme. This rash is an actual skin disorder due to an allergic reaction to medicines or illnesses. Most often it is associated with the herpes virus but occasional medications like barbiturates and penicillin are to blame. While it can affect the young or the old, it commonly inflicts children and young adults. Symptoms include fever, joint ache, itching, and the rash, starts quickly and spreads plus can occur on the upper body and include the mouth and lips with blisters. Treatment options are geared towards treating the cause of the rash, usually the herpes virus. However antihistamines, cool compresses, and corticosteroid creams can help the rash itself.

The most common target rash is caused by Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by being bit by a tick that is carrying the disease. The rash appears about 1-2 weeks after infection and is characterized by a red center surrounded by clear skin with a red out edge in a distinct target shape. The rash itself will disappear within a month, and some people will have no further problems. Occasionally however, Lyme disease can spread to other areas of the body and even affect the heart. The infected individual will be tired, and generally feel ill and have other rashes. Eventually numbness or tingling of the fingers and hands may occur. During this stage Lyme disease is treatable, but if left untreated, Lyme disease can cause arthritis and memory lapses.

Since a bull’s eye rash can be caused by a variety of illnesses, it is important to contact a doctor when the rash appears. Sometimes there may be nothing to worry about; however there is always the potential for a serious underlying condition. It is always easiest to treat an illness in the beginning stages than to wait until it is too late.

Meigs Syndrome – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Meigs Syndrome consists of a benign ovarian tumor or cyst, ascites, and pleural effusion. While the cause of this disease syndrome still remains unknown, resection of the ovarian tumor or cyst usually helps to resolve the other symptoms. With surgical treatment, females affected by this disease can usually have a normal life expectancy. However, in some patients, there is a recurrence of both the tumor as well as other symptoms, which causes a medical dilemma.

In such situations, Ayurvedic medicines can be judiciously used to control the tumor as well as other symptoms. Before the initiation of treatment, it is important to conduct appropriate tests to rule out malignancy of the ovaries, which may need separate or different treatment. The benign tumor can usually be treated with medicines like Triphala Guggulu, Sukshma Triphala, Punarnava Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Kanchnar Guggulu, Latakaranj (Pongamia pinnata), Varun (Craetavea nurvala), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa).

The ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity) and pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid within the linings of the lungs) can be treated using medicines like Pushkarmul (Inula racemosa), Pippali (Piper longum), Vasa (Adhathoda vasika), Shrung Bhasma, Ras-Sindur, Sameerpannag-Ras, Malla-Sindur, Arogya-Vardhini, Punarnavadi-Qadha, and Jaypal-Ras. Some patients tend to have an accumulation of blood along with other fluids, in the lungs; in such situations, medicines like Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur and Sameerpannag-Ras are contraindicated.

In some individuals with Meigs syndrome, other symptoms like endometriosis can be observed, which may partly explain the bleeding tendency and accumulation of blood within the pleural membranes and in the abdominal cavity. The triad of symptoms in Meigs syndrome itself points to an inflammatory pathology which causes either a tumor or cyst, and fluid accumulation. This inflammation can be treated using medicines like Kamdudha-Ras, Praval-Panchamrut-Ras, Sukshma-Triphala, Triphala Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut Guggulu, Praval-Bhasma, Mukta-Bhasma, and Chandrakala-Ras.

Once the symptoms have been adequately controlled, with a full resolution of tumor as well as accumulated fluid, it is also worthwhile to give treatment in order to improve the immunity of the body, so as to prevent a recurrence of the syndrome. This includes the use of medicines like Suvarna-Bhasma, Heerak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant and Vasant-Kusumakar-Ras. This treatment strategy can thus help to comprehensively control Meigs syndrome.

Truth About Bronchitis – Symptoms And Treatment Explained

1. This disease was quite common even in those days yet the developments in the medicinal field have seen now seen many alternatives to treat the said condition.

2. The pulmonary disorders are rather common among the children. This doesn’t imply that the adults are untouched with the same. As a matter of fact, living in the modern age polluted cities, amidst smokers, industries and racing cars all of us are prone to the disease.

3. In case your bronchi are inflamed, there are chances for you to have bronchitis that is a known obstructive pulmonary disorder or illness.

4. Bronchitis can be divided in to the acute or short term and the chronic or long term category.

5. Bronchitis can occur in any age.

6. It is quite closely associated with the flues and colds.

7. In case the bronchitis is left uncured, it can lead to severe pneumonia.

8. Bronchitis is indeed common among the smokers.

Acute Bronchitis

1. Acute bronchitis’ symptoms are quite similar to flu.

2. It lasts only for a short term.

3. Individuals suffering with the viral infections are often susceptible to the acute bronchitis.

4. This ailment is contagious & generally begins with dry cough that often happens at night. Within a few days, the cough would progress. Quite soon the person would suffer with other symptoms like fever, fatigue, and headache. Curing this cough might take many weeks or many months. This is because healing process in such cases is very slow, especially in your bronchial tubes.

5. In case you are suffering with cough for a month or more, your doctor could refer you to check with an ENT expert so as to ensure if there are some other causes of the irritation. Yet, if your bronchial tubes remain irritated, this can lead to the asthmatic conditions.

6. In acute bronchitis, your passage ways constrict due to infection caused by some virus or bacteria. In case the ailment is due to bacteria, the apt antibiotic regimen can do the trick to cure the ailment. It is always advised to visit the doctor to get a medical diagnosis. Remember taking any medicine with out the doctor’s prescription could make the disorder rather worse.

7. Persistent cough & wheezing also imply that you might be suffering with acute bronchitis. The constricted bronchial tubes create the wheezing sound every time we breathe. While this disorder can be cleared up in a few days, in some cases it might take several months or weeks as well. Remember in such a situation, you must take lot of rest and drink lots & lots of water or juices.

8. A simple home remedy to fight back this disease is placing wet blankets & towels in varied places in the house to increase the humidity there. Room humidifiers are also a good option for such patients.

9. Smoking is anyways injurious to health but in case of the bronchial patients, it can be disastrous. So, the smokers suffering with acute bronchitis must quit the habit of smoking before the condition gets worst.

Chronic Bronchitis

1. This is an ongoing condition.

2. Curing this might take several months, or even years.

3. The environmental factors that lead to this ailment are exposure to fumes, smoke, dust, odors, etc.

4. Chronic bronchitis is incurable, so the patients must consult their doctor well enough to identify the triggers. They should then remove as many triggers as possible form their environment in order to keep healthy.

5. Remember, in this ailment prevention is equivalent to cure so you must work on removing the triggers else, it could be dangerous for you.

6. Consulting the doctor, they would suggest you several laboratory tests like test for pulmonary function & blood gases in arteries, chest x-rays, and sputum culture. Generally thee test are also done for the patients of acute bronchitis.

7. Just like acute bronchitis, smoking can make the situation worst for the patients of chronic bronchitis as well. So you must quit this bad habit in order to keep healthy and get rid of this ailment.

8. A healthy & active lifestyle is unbeatable at the end of the day. Practicing all preventive measures can avoid bronchitis and many other ailments for all individuals.

The primer symptoms of bronchitis are:

i. coughing

ii. excessive mucus

iii. fever

iv. pain in the chest

v. inflammation

vi. discomfort

vii. wheezing

These symptoms can further lead to the other respiratory problems like:

i. sinusitis

ii. asthma

iii. complicated pneumonia

Diagnose & Treatments

1. While bronchitis is a very common respiratory disorder, it is often misdiagnosed in the absence of proper para clinical & physical examinations. To get an accurate diagnose, laboratory analysis & pulmonary tests are a must.

2. Bronchitis calls for special attention before the damage is enhanced further. When the infection is bacterial, fever is the chief indication. In around 80% cases, the treatment as accomplished in just 5-10 days with the right anti-biotics. Remember, the anti-biotic or any medication must be taken with the doctor’s advise else it could be devastating.

3. Antibiotics have several side effects like abdominal pain, diarrhea, rashes, etc. that can’t be neglected. These cause a lot of discomfort for the patient. Yet they are acceptable only if they are absolutely necessary.

4. In case the infection is caused due to virus, or other agents, antibiotics are not effective. In such periods the only treatment is to rest for long time period, use room humidifiers, and hydrate the patients’ body with lot of water and juices. In case the things do not get fine with in a few days, you must consult a doctor. It might be pneumonia and/or asthma bronchitis.

5. When the cause of bronchitis is obstructions in your bronchial tubes owing to inflammation in your respiratory tract, tissues, organs and the mucous membranes, it causes irritation and increased secretion of the mucus. Such gathering of mucus in your bronchial tubes causes difficulty in breathing, wheezing sound and coughing.

6. Bronchodilators are the medications administered to the patients who have a difficulty in breathing. These help in re-establishing the process of respiration. These are commonly prescribed to the patients suffering with chronic bronchitis & asthma.

7. Bronchitis could be dangerous and it is advisable to get treated as soon as possible to avoid all complications!

Staying Healthy With a Cold Nose

As I bask in the sun here in Los Angeles on this January 10, worried that I may run out of sun block, my thoughts go to my fellow man in less sunny areas in the Mid West, and other snow blocked areas. I would like to remind you of what to do to stay healthy.

With the snow, you are subject to nasal/sinus conditions that are avoidable. For snow bunnies, here are some health tips.

Avoid getting chilled. When you get chilled, your immune system is lowered. If you are in wet clothes, get changed as soon as you can. By the same token, if you are going from hot to cold and back again, do cover up in the cold and do unbundled in the warmth. Best thing to do is to carry a back pack and keep extra tops, towel, jacket in there so you can change if you need to. These extras really help when you come in wet from the snow into an overheated room.

A cold nose is nothing to joke about. In cold, the nose works overtime to try to warm the air going to your lungs. In a short time the nasal cilia are just worn out and fail to remove bacteria from the nose. If your nasal cilia are dry, they can’t move the bacteria away. Then the bacteria remain in the nose and sinuses and you end up with a sinus infection.

Moisten the air you breathe. In cold weather the air is DRY. If you are in a higher altitude, the air is even drier. Do whatever you can to put moisture in the air: heat pans of water, fill the sinks and tubs with water; run a vaporizer, stand in a hot shower. You can hang wet towels or sheets- these evaporate quickly to moisten the air.

Moisten the nose. The product Breathe.ease XL nasal gel can be used several times a day to keep the nose moist. Breathe.ease gel was especially designed for persons who ski, to moisturize the nose and prevent nose bleed. This special formula moistens at a nasal and a cellular level. With proper moisture the nasal cilia can remove unwanted bacteria.

Drink plenty of fluids. Instead of plain water, add lemon or lime to the water. Add honey too, instead of sugar. This also thins mucus and has antibacterial properties. This will thin the nasal and chest mucus and aid in keeping you healthy. Add lemon to your salad dressing. Instead of coffee, switch to tea — green or black-with or without caffeine. Tea has anti-oxidants and stimulates good cilia movement.

Increase nasal cilia movement. In the nose and chest you have millions of microscopic “hairs” that act like oars to move bacteria, pollen and viruses out of the nose. These get trapped in a layer of mucus that is moved by the cilia to the back of the throat where it ends in the stomach and the stomach acid takes out the bacteria. Temperatures too hot or too cold slow the cilia. Measure to bring cilia to normal movement include tea, singing “oooommm” at a low tone, jump rope, and pulsatile irrigation.

Avoid smoke. Sitting by the crackling fire sounds great. However, some homes are not geared for the kind of cold weather many areas are experiencing. Electric heaters are great because they do not fill the air with smoke and ash. A fireplace that hasn’t been used in a long time can be dangerous because it may not be vented properly. Oil heaters are dangerous – they may not be vented properly and can produce carbon monoxide. Remember, every year someone is found dead in their closed garage, where they ran the motor to get warm and built up carbon monoxide. A recent study concluded that gas stove type heaters are not harmful to the nose and chest.

A frequent result of cold weather, is that persons may be in a brand new trailer home or a bedroom with a new rug and furniture. These new products – cabinets, wooden furniture, and manufactured rugs, are all treated with formaldehyde type preservatives. The lacquer or paints may contain solvents. When the trailer is heated and unvented, these materials evaporate into the air and are seriously toxic. If you are sleeping in a new trailer home or hotel room, make sure it is fully aired out before it is heated.

Avoid fashion. It is insane to see men walking with dress shoes that have slippery leather soles, or women with high heels and a short skirt in the snow and ice. Hundreds of persons slip on the ice and many die. Dressing for the climate means wide boots that don’t slip, pants, sweaters, and scarves. Be smart. Carry a cane or stick to help you with balance. When you walk in snow and ice keep reminding yourself that you don’t want to be the one to slip and crack your skull. Just because you are not 80 years old doesn’t mean you can’t walk with a cane that is best for balance.

Avoid caching cold. When everyone in the office has a cold and is sneezing and the cold virus fills the air, consider using pulsatile irrigation of the nose/sinuses with saline. Pulsatile irrigation is effective to remove ICAM-1. This is the product that the cold virus uses to enter into your body; if you wash out the ICAM-1, you may not catch a cold. Also, frequent hand washing is important because that is a number one vector for viruses entering your body.

Supplements: Doctors feel that Vitamin D and probiotics (yogurt) can help boost your immune factors.

Check you local driving conditions. Just as important as a cold nose is driving correctly. Most snow accidents happen to persons who didn’t know what to do when the car skided or how to stop on ice. Get information from your local sources about snow driving. In California, we recently had a traffic tragedy because the driver didn’t put his car into neutral when the motor accelerated! Learn everything you need to know about snow driving before you start your engine.

Snow? California? I will probably be heading to the mountains to enjoy the snow next weekend.

Bronchitis – A Common Respiratory Condition

Bronchitis is encountered in all ages, especially in association with colds or flues. At persons with weak immune system and smokers chronic bronchitis and asthmatic bronchitis are the major complications. After bronchitis people are more susceptible to develop pneumonia.

Cases of bacteria caused by viruses recover without treatment in about 5-6 days. Viruses usually cause acute forms of bronchitis with intense symptoms than those of chronic cases. If the cause is bacteria antibiotics are required.

Chronic bronchitis needs permanent and intense treatment and care for a quick recovery; if not properly treated symptoms reappear and might even worsen. Chronic bronchitis must immediately be treated with ant biotherapy. Chronic cases of bronchitis appear usually in patients with weaken immune systems and in chronic smokers.

Primer symptoms of bronchitis are coughing, fever, excessive mucus amounts, chest pains, headaches, discomfort, inflammation and wheezing. Fever mainly indicates a bacterial infection requiring antibiotics. Bronchitis can put major diagnose problems because its symptoms assemble other respiratory conditions like sinusitis, clod, flu or asthma. The absence of early treatment can lead to severe complications.

Physical and Para clinical examinations can rapidly establish the bronchitis diagnosis; laboratory analyses and pulmonary testing show the most important signs of bronchial sufferance. Although it is a very common medical condition, bronchitis is often misdiagnosed. It is one of the most frequent encountered diseases of the respiratory obstructive chronic diseases. A clinical exam of the patient can incline the doctor’s opinion towards asthma, sinusitis or allergies. Supplementary Chest X-ray and respiration tests must be done in order to prescribe the right diagnose and treatment.

In bronchitis of other causes than bacteria, the main curing method is to release the obstruction of the bronchial tubes. The cause of the obstruction is the inflammation of the respiratory tract, mucous membranes, organs and tissues. Due to the irritation and inflammation the bronchis increase the secretion of mucus for protection against damaging factors like dust or pollutants. The movements of the cills are diminished or stopped and secretions gather inside the bronchial tubes.

The gathered mucus caused coughing, wheezing and difficult breathing. That is why the first administered drugs are bronchodilators which help the reestablishment of the respiration. Bronchodilators are mostly used in asthma and chronic bronchitis.

To achieve a full and permanent healing of bronchitis it must be diagnosed and properly treated in time. If not treated, it will become chronic or develop major and dangerous complications. If you show any signs or symptoms like coughs, fever or difficult breathing, you must see a doctor immediately as you might suffer from bronchitis.

The New Age of Aging

In her article titled ‘The New Age of Aging,’ released on February 22/February 29, 2016 in the ‘Longevity’ issue of Time Magazine, Laura L. Carestansin of the Stanford Center on Longevity touched on several hurdles seniors confront in the twilight of their lives.

Americans now live into their eighties, nineties and beyond, she said. With the increase in longevity come medical and financial woes. For example, the number of Americans who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease could reach close to 14 million in 2050, and lots of seniors outlast their financial savings.

The article couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time. I found it by chance while in search of contents for a new nonprofit organization to help elders in my hometown of Akokwa, in Nigeria.

Preparation for a comfortable old age should start early in life, counseled Ms Carestansin. However, early preparation for an anticipated long life is new to the human species, an inclination she blamed on an evolutionary tilt anchored on our previous short lifespan going back over many thousands of years.

Wrong choices in food habits or lifestyle made at a young age contribute to discomfort in old age. Habits such as smoking and a sedentary lifestyle are the two primary culprits. Cigarette smoking leads to debilitating lung disease and lung cancer, while a sedentary lifestyle contributes to obesity, diabetes, and dementia.

If Americans could exercise more, save more and socialize more they could improve their opportunity for a better quality of life in their senior years. Strong social ties among older people help reduce stress, boost confidence, and have a positive impact on the aging process. Furthermore, she said, early life education improves both the quality and the length of life.

What surprised me is the commonality of problems between seniors in America and their counterparts in Akokwa.

Ms Carestansin reminisced about how a farming lifestyle used to keep Americans in good physical shape. Not any more, she regretted. The decrease in farm work is as noticeable in the United States as it is in my hometown, and probably in the whole of Nigeria.

Eating habits in Nigeria have degenerated to match the American proclivity for fast food. Fried chicken has replaced vegetables, and fried chips and potatoes have replaced fruits. Sudden death, until now rare in rural Nigeria, is on the rise.

Globalization and subsequent migration, the author pointed out, take relatives and friends away from seniors.

Nowhere else is the consequence of social dislocation more abrupt and costly than in underdeveloped countries. Gone are the days when old African men and women could expect their children to provide the social security nets their parents once envisioned.

Pain After Spinal Fusion May Indicate Hardware Failure

There are many potential causes of back pain after a spinal fusion surgery. The spine is a highly dynamic mechanism, and the attempt to make one or more of its segments into a rigid unit may not yield perfect results.

Spinal fusion is done to eliminate painful motion from an unstable segment of the spine. During the procedure, a piece of bone graft or similar material is applied between two vertebrae, and the segment is secured with rods and pedicle screws. Ideally, the hardware used provides enough stability to allow the bone graft to slowly fuse to each vertebra, thereby joining them into one rigid segment.

A number of things can go wrong during and after surgery. First, the hardware may be implanted in such away that it interferes with nerves and muscles around the spine. Even though surgeons have extensive knowledge of spinal structures, the area is complex enough that even an adept surgeon may place a screw or rod in a position to cause pain. It is also possible that the fusion never takes place; this could be due to excess motion of the segment post-surgery. Hardware may break or migrate during the healing process, creating pain and increasing the risk of failed fusion.

It’s important to be aware that pain after surgery could indicate a hardware problem. If pain occurs soon after surgery (after the initial post-operative pain subsides), it is possible that either the placement of hardware is the problem or that hardware has migrated. Sometimes after a fusion procedure, the rod moves out of place before the fusion sets up or scar tissue forms to secure it. In either case you may feel localized pain and tenderness when the skin over the rod is touched. You may also have signs of nerve interference (shooting pain, numbness, and/or weakness along a nerve path).

Over time, metal fatigue can cause the rods or screws to fracture. This can lead to nerve pain and muscle spasms, since the fragmented implant may be interfering with a muscle’s movement.

Pain caused by hardware can only be resolved by removing the hardware in a surgical procedure.

Lonstein et. al. performed a study assessing the complications associated with pedicle screws used in 915 spinal fusions performed between 1984 and 1993. They found that late-onset pain required the removal of hardware from those who received 24.3% of the original procedures. 20% of those who had hardware removed were found to have pseudarthrosis, or failed fusion. In the other 80% of cases, then, it is possible that hardware was the main cause of pain. See the study at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10565643?dopt=Abstract.

The study above is rather old, but new studies into the complications associated with spinal fusion surgery are lacking. The rate of spinal fusion procedures has increased 250% since the mid-90’s with the greatest increase in the Medicare population. This has raised concerns that surgeons are performing unnecessary surgeries for the kickbacks they receive from hardware manufacturers.

Though spinal fusion boasts of a 95% or greater success rate, it is important to remember that this rate doesn’t take into account a number of complications that may result. If you’re feeling pain after spinal fusion, request imaging tests to see if your hardware is out of place or fractured.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Can Be Fatal

No one dies from lupus ~ some die from its complications.

Lupus is difficult to diagnose and even harder to treat. There is no single test that diagnoses this incurable, chronic disease.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is an incurable autoimmune disease, which holds the ability to debilitate and take lives as a result of attacking: healthy cells, tissues, various bodily systems, central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, blood, skin and vital organs – heart, brain, kidneys, lungs, and so forth.

It is not contagious, cancerous, nor is it rare. It is believed to be far more prevalent than AIDS, Sickle Cell Anemia, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cystic Fibrosis ~ combined.

Men, women, children, and the elderly can develop lupus – although, more women are more likely than men to become diagnosed with it. There are more lupus patients of color, rather than Caucasians, who have, and are more likely to get, the disease.

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, there are four recognized forms of lupus:

  1. Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus
  2. Drug-induced Lupus Erythematosus
  3. Neonatal Lupus
  4. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus is the most common form of lupus, and is what most people mean when they refer to “lupus.” Systemic lupus can be mild or severe.

SLE Lupus can attack any system, tissue, or cell in the body.

Systemic lupus, which left untreated, can be life-threatening. Its symptoms are as widespread as the disease itself. One of the saddest realities of this disease is that it is usually not diagnosed until the patient becomes, temporarily or completely, debilitated or is in a life-threatening stage of the disease.

Symptoms vary from patient to patient and include – but are in no means limited to: debilitating joint pain and severe fatigue, as well as seizures and vital organ (kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain) malfunctions, memory problems (also known as lupus fog) and confusion, hardening of the arteries, hair loss, sore throats and fevers, butterfly rash across the bridge of the nose and cheeks.

An un-diagnosed patient may not show any symptoms, while the disease is working quietly behind the scenes attacking the blood by creating blood clots. These blood clots can occur in the anywhere in the body, including the lungs and brain.

This can result in a stroke, even death.

Lupus can be an extremely isolating and scary disease.

Just like any life-altering or life-threatening illness, the burden this puts on an individual, a marriage, and a family can be devastating.

It’s been said that many marriages end in divorce during the first year of a lupus patient getting a firm diagnosis, because the ramifications of the disease are so far-reaching. The symptoms, the financial burden, and the changes in lifestyle can sometimes be too much for a marriage to withstand.

Support and Awareness of Lupus

When a person gets cancer, devastating as it is, there is typically an outpouring of support from friends, family, co-workers, and even acquaintances. People know what cancer is; we understand AIDS and other wide-spread diseases. Lupus, while it does not secure a death sentence, it can take lives.

Information and support is easily obtained. Friends seem to come out from all directions offering to help. Doctors and researchers understand cancer, and as we most know – can cure some forms of cancer, if it’s caught in time.

Lupus, however, is extremely difficult to diagnose because its symptoms mimic less severe illnesses, and there are periods where symptoms aren’t present at all. For the most part, lupus patients look healthy – and as a result, they are typically branded as hypochondriacs.

Researchers now know that lupus patients have a genetic predisposition to getting it, but isolating the particular gene or genes and finding a way to stop it from developing into lupus still remains a mystery.

While most patients go an average of four years before getting a firm diagnosis, I was one of the fortunate few. I received a diagnosis within a month. For the prior 10 years, I had endured bothersome, painful, and often debilitating and undiagnosed symptoms.

The morning of New Year’s Eve 1997, I had my first seizure. It was one of hundreds to come. I saw a Neurologist soon after the New Year, and I now laugh at the recollection of his response, “a lot of women faint. You’re drinking too much water.”

(Years later, this doctor called and apologized for being so flippant and dismissive. He added that I helped him see how serious this disease is and that he would make strides to educate himself so he never made that mistake again.)

Shortly thereafter, I saw a newly-licensed doctor practicing at an emergency clinic. Apparently he’d paid close attention to autoimmune disease lectures during med school, because he took one look at me – my eyes, in particular, which were profusely inflamed (severe keratitis), and he ran the first of many tests, which led to a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus.

Getting a diagnosis is the first part of the battle.

Once a firm diagnosis is made, finding proper treatment can be an even more difficult task.

The year I was diagnosed, I fought tirelessly to get proper treatment. I underwent over 100 tests and saw 30 different specialists, including five different Rheumatologists ~ after I was diagnosed.

Entrusting my health to the then-most highly-regarded lupus specialist in the Greater Orlando area, I realized the magnitude of the battle that lay ahead. My weakness, fatigue, and pain throughout my body was nothing short of surreal. Exhibiting a host of classic lupus symptoms, such as blue fingers and toes, full-body lesions, hair loss, fever, along with nausea and dizziness that was nearly intolerable – and blood tests to confirm all, this healthcare professional retorted, “You’re frizzed out and there’s nothing I can do for you.”

Atlanta Bound

It took months before I found proper treatment. At the hand-written suggestion via fax from Dr. Daniel J. Wallace, Chief Rheumatologist at Mount Cedar Sinai in Los Angeles, I made an emergency trip to Atlanta to see his colleague. Too ill to stand, I rested in a makeshift bed in the back of my SUV, while my former husband drove eight hours north to meet the second-ranked Rheumatologist in the country.

After recounting my plight with this Doctor, he was stunned at the ‘medical treatment’ I’d received to date. Dr. Rattandeep Singh, MD of Atlanta, Georgia saved my life.

Granted, I was not in the life-threatening stages of lupus any longer, but I was not living anything close to a functioning life. I was housebound, bedridden, or otherwise in a wheelchair the majority of the time.

Symptoms vary from patient to patient, day to day, week to week, month to month. One thing doctors, researchers, and patients agree upon is lupus that is unpredictable. Lupus patients count on its unpredictability, and they plan their days around it.

Just as symptoms vary from patient to patient, so do the treatments. They range from steroids and anti-malaria drugs, to kidney dialysis, chemotherapy and hospitalization for heart, lungs, and other vital organ involvement.

A dear friend who received a blow-by-blow account of my first two-year battle with lupus and saw for herself first-hand what I was dealing with: using a wheelchair, uncontrolled seizures and living with heart and lung complications, she still did not recognize how ill I felt – until I received a call a few weeks later.

She had been working at the University of Chicago’s hospital. On a routine basis she walked by a wing dedicated to treating patients with severe kidney malfunctions. She called me one night, nearly in tears, because she couldn’t believe the horrible pain these patients were in. Then she added, “Most of these patients have lupus. I had no idea it was this serious.”

Proper Research and Advocacy

The most sobering fact about lupus is, if we had proper research funds ~ no one would die from its complications. This does not need to be a fatal disease. Lupus patients and the doctors treating them need funds for cutting-edge lupus research – and that starts by raising awareness about it.

According to the Huffington Post, the FDA has just backed the first new lupus drug in 50 years.

“I think it’s very exciting that this is the first new drug in five decades, but it’s not magic bullet,” said Dr. Maria Suarez-Almazor of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston

It is my sincere hope this article helps raise awareness, particularly for healthcare professionals who claim “no one dies from lupus.”

My first book of photography and quotes, “Perspectives: Words on Hope, Truth, and Integrity” is one of the many art forms I’ve sold over the years to help raise awareness and research funds for the Lupus Foundation of America and Howie Dorough’s Wings of Hope Lupus Foundation (a foundation formed after the loss of his sister, Caroline who died from lupus complications at age 38).

Avoid Analysis Paralysis

One topic that is frequently debated amongst sales professionals is the amount of time you need to spend researching a customer before you contact them.

This topic applies mainly to business-to-business sales, although it can relate to most selling situations, regardless of who you are selling to. The big question is how much more effective is your selling approach when you have more than the normal amount of knowledge about a particular customer.

I have worked with sales people who spend extreme amounts of time researching and looking into a customer before making contact with them. They need to know everything they can in order to feel comfortable initiating dialogue.

They spend hours on their website. They dig through the Internet. They comb through their company database to search for potential history. They talk to as many people as they can about a particular customer or account. They leave no stone unturned. They could tell you everything about an account, including information that is completely useless when it comes to successfully selling to or building a business relationship with someone.

Sorry researchers, but I just do not understand this. I have found that sales people who say they are "researching" are really just apprehensive about the selling situation and use the research as an excuse not to do the most difficult part of the selling process; prospect. They find comfort in the fact that they are actually putting in some type of effort. Unfortunately, that effort is often wasted time.

Now do not get me wrong, I do believe in having knowledge about a customer. Information you can gather prior to meeting with a customer can definitely help increase your probabilities of success. Customers want to know that you have done your homework. They want to feel important and they need to know you are serious about their business. Doing your homework and having pieces of relevant information can surely help you throughout the selling process.
There are also products and services that require an extensive amount of knowledge in order to properly qualify and move a customer forward in the selling process.

I understand and respect that type of sale. But for the majority of salespeople who are proactively selling and managing customers, you know what I mean. When you spend inordinate amounts of time researching prospects, you are taking away from the time when you should actually be selling.

The biggest issue I have seen with those who spend too much time researching is they develop inaccurate assumptions before they even start selling. Assuming is one of the most dangerous words in the profession of selling. It causes people to miss opportunities and pass over potential customers due to their preconceived notions.

I have found the best and most effective way to research a customer is to talk to them. Forget the hours on the Internet. Ignore the urge to dig. Instead of doing that, gather the necessary amount of information you need and call or visit your prospect. Spend time learning about them by getting accurate, real-time and relevant information directly from your customer.

Not only will your information be more accurate, you will also begin building a relationship with your potential customer, you will uncover more valuable information and most importantly, you will avoid what is often referred to as "analysis paralysis"!

Surgery To Stop Snoring – 4 Big Drawbacks of The Snoring Surgery

Would you do anything possible to end your snoring problems? While snoring can be annoying, it can also be deadly! For instance, those with Sleep Apnea actually stop breathing for seconds or even minutes. While some snorers choose surgery as a remedy, here are some reasons why you should think twice about it:

1. Cost

As you might expect, a surgery to stop snoring can have quite a steep price. This is particularly true of laser surgery. In these tough economic times, most of us want to minimize any extra expenses– including anti-snoring surgeries that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Well, you can! Instead of removing the muscles that cause snoring, you can do various exercises that help to strengthen them. Not only can such exercises be effective, but they are absolutely, positively free! That’s because they take a holistic approach to solving the problem. While the goal is the same as surgeries’, the methods involve exercising rather than cutting.

2. Risks

Because anti-snoring surgery involves cutting, risks are involved. There’s the risk that the surgery won’t work. But an even more significant risk is that you could experience complications that actually worsen your situation! Yes, one of the root causes of snoring is the malfunctioning of various muscles in your throat’s airways. However, removing those muscles altogether can cause more problems that can result in pain, discomfort, and despair.

3. Pain

By definition, any surgery involves cutting. A surgery to stop snoring is no different. It typically involves removing the problematic muscles that are causing the snoring. Even if you’ve never undergone surgery before, you know from experience that even minor cuts can be excruciatingly painful. The good news is that you can avoid the pain that anti-snoring surgeries cause, by strengthening the muscles rather than removing them.

4. Effectiveness

While there’s a chance that a surgery to stop snoring could be effective for you, there’s no guarantee. You could end up undergoing a painful surgical procedure that leaves you nothing to show for it, except a pricey bill. How about anti-snoring exercises? They’ve proven to be extremely effective in treating snoring problems. In fact, simply changing your sleeping position can be quite effective in reducing or eliminating your snoring! The bottom line is that anti-snoring exercises work.

Understanding Spinal Stenosis

Spine disorders can have a very detrimental effect on people unfortunate to be afflicted with them. What is worse is how common they are, especially among people over the age of 50. A very common spinal disorder is known as spinal stenosis. It is the condition where the spinal canal narrows in at least one vertebrae, putting pressure on the nerves concentrated in the spinal canal. This “pinching” can cause pain, numbness or worse to those that suffer from spinal stenosis.

The human spine can be divided in three parts, known as the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Cervical vertebrae are located in the neck, and if stenosis occurs here, one may feel pain and numbness in the arms, along with possible pain in the neck as well. In the thoracic region, one may feel pain in the organs. The lumbar region is the most common area where spinal disorders occur because it is under the most stress to keep your body upright, as well as perform everyday tasks. Complications in this region can cause numbness in the legs and affect your ability to maintain your balance.

There are two types of spinal stenosis – primary or acquired. Primary is due to a genetic defect developed as a fetus. Achondroplasia, for example, is a bone disorder that affects bone growth and is the cause of the most common type of dwarfism. Acquired is developed after birth due to other factors, such as age. Most cases of spinal stenosis are acquired, and are most commonly due to age. People over the age of 50 experience natural wear and tear of their bodies, along with other conditions such as osteoarthritis, which contribute to spinal stenosis.

There are several different ways to treat this, depending on the severity of the disorder. Basic treatment options can involve medication, physical therapy or some combination of them. Over the counter pain killers are usually used, such as acetaminophen, although doctors may prescribe stronger drugs such as Vicoden to battle the pain. Physical therapy is helpful because it uses techniques to help increase the spine’s stability and strength.

Severe cases of spinal stenosis may require a decompression surgery, which creates more room for the spinal cord and “decompresses” the nerves. Common procedures done include a foraminotomy and/or a laminotomy. These procedures are relatively very easy and successful, and do not require open surgery in most cases. They also only require a few hours of recovery before you can be released by the hospital.

Natural Skin Repair with Tamanu Oil – The Giant Skin Healer

The Oil

Tamanu oil is an excellent example of a traditional remedy which has percolated to broader attention due to a combination of effective use in traditional settings, and scientific research corroborating its benefits. The oil of tamanu offers relief for common skin problems, and has demonstrated significant benefit in hospital settings as a first aid treatment in cases of serious burns and other serious skin conditions. Tamanu oil is a remarkable topical healing agent, with general skin healing actions, antineuralgic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (fungi, yeast, bacteriae and viruses), antibiotic and antioxidant properties.

Tamanu Oil is found in the kernel, within the nut of Tamanu fruit. The fruit is most commonly found growing in Tahiti, but it can also be found in other tropical climates. The Tamanu tree is uniquely characteristic with black cracked bark and beautiful, shiny elliptical leaves.

Likewise the Tamanu kernel is dark and small. It is made by cold-pressing of the oil from the kernels after two months of drying. The oil is much prized, and deep brownish- green in colour, and has a characteristic aromatic, rich smell. Since the Tamanu tree only blossoms twice a year, and it takes 100 kilograms of the fruit to yield 5 kilograms of the precious commodity, the oil is not cheap. But, the benefits far outweigh the time and expense of manufacturing this miracle skin care and skin repair agent.

Natives believed the Tamanu tree was a sacred gift of nature and that gods hid in its branches because of its healing powers. It was their answer to skin protection from the hot sun, high humidity and ocean winds.

Skin Care

We often hear friends and health care professionals tell us to eat right and get plenty of exercise, rest, water and a healthy diet, but we rarely hear someone suggesting we take care of our skin properly. Men in particular are ignoring the needs of their skin . It needs loving care, even when covering a male body. We tend to forget that it is an organ with important functions, without which we simply die. So, just as we would take care of our heart, our stomach, or any other part of our body, we need to take care of our skin .

It has antioxidant, anti aging, anti wrinkle properties. Considering its protective properties in cases of overexposure to the suns rays, and the fact that about 75% of premature aging of the skin is caused by UV radiation from the sun, one can understand the anti aging properties of this miracle oil. It may be used as a general age defying skin care product, securing the skins health at all times.

Our skin is the first line of defense for the rest of our body. If our skin is in bad shape, our entire body is affected. If you want to take better care of your skin , then you need to learn about Tamanu Oil and its many blessings.

Skin Problems

If you suffer from skin problems, you know how miserable and debilitating skin maladies can become. Not only is it irritating and hurtful, it leads to self-consciousness. Skin maladies affect every aspect of life. So, Tamanu Oil is a blessing for individuals suffering from a myriad of ailments and allergies.

The list includes: infections (virus, bacteria, fungi and yeast), rashes, allergies, acne, growths, eczema, burns, blemishes- even severe ones, and psoriasis. As a first aid substance it is unbeatable. Take sunburns for example, or other burns for that matter, or infections of all sorts. It soothes the pain and heals the skin , putting the victim at ease very quickly, and protecting against scarring and long term negative consequences.

Skin infections can be extremely painful, uncomfortable and irritating. After an individual is almost driven crazy by the infection, he/she generally resorts to a doctor’s visit and a prescription for an antibiotic. However, since the human body has become more resistant to the known types of antibiotics, doctors hesitate to write a script unless the patient is totally insistent and really miserable.

Now, we know of a natural means to help the skin heal. Tamanu Oil works as a topical ointment for the skin . It can be applied directly to the skin , as is, or diluted in a cream or ointment. For example, the application of a Tamanu topical cream fights the infection from the outside-in. Absorbed into skin , it helps aid the healing process. It absorbs quickly and completely, and leaves no greasy residues.

Rashes

In addition to infection, Tamanu Oil is effective in the treatment of rashes. If you have ever spent any length of time around infants, you know how miserable a diaper rash can be. Seemingly nothing can make a crying baby comfortable and happy. Then, when the diaper becomes soiled again, the rash is just irritated further.

Not all rashes are limited to small children. For example, if you have an allergy to nickel, then you already know the consequences of allowing your jeans button to touch your skin . By the time the day is over, you have a rash that almost drives you insane with discomfort.

Whether you are young or old, Tamanu Oil has been found effective in treating rashes. For small children, the topical cream can be applied during a diaper change. For adults, the oil in its purest form or a product including the oil can be used directly on the affect area of the skin .

Sometimes, rashes and other equally uncomfortable skin disorders are caused by allergies. Rashes may also be caused by infections; boils, carbuncles, folliculitis, shingles and herpes are just a few skin maladies caused by infections. Fortunately, as scientists continue to explore the many ways Tamanu Oil can assist in skin care, it can be used topically to relieve the discomfort of the occasional outbreak, or applied regularly as a skin healer to keep the symptoms at bay.

Acne

Acne is another outbreak we humans suffer from. Once a person hits puberty, acne is soon to follow. For some it is a minor annoyance for a few years. For others, it can be debilitating socially, emotionally, and physically. From a little red bump to open and oozing sores, the problem can be a lifelong challenge. The pain and scars are more than skin deep. Doctorsand patients have found that Tamanu Oil can even help acne suffers. Topically administered, Tamanu Oil can help the body’s natural defenses assist in the growth of healthy, younger looking skin , and in the elimination of acne.

Eczema

Like acne, eczema can be devastating both physically and emotionally. For example, a child with eczema will scratch until the skin is actually raw and bleeding. Even if the temptation to scratch can be controlled during waking hours, kids will scratch during sleep, waking in the morning with puffy, sore, and oftentimes bleeding wounds on the skin . Fortunately, the skin healing aspects of Tamanu Oil can also help those that suffer from the worst forms of eczema.

Psoriasis

Like eczema, psoriasis is a lifelong disease of the skin that can literally drive a person crazy. Psoriasis is much more than a flake here and an itch there. Psoriasis is a source of discomfort and pain 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anything that will provide relief, with additional side effects is an unimaginable blessing. Tamanu Oil can be that blessing.

General Natural Skin Repair Agent

For virtually any skin irritation, disease, scar, wound, infection, burn, sunburn or abrasion, skin care and Tamanu Oil go hand in hand. As a first aid it is unsurpassed. Even serious cases are relieved through tamanu oil. Believe it or not, even internal diseases like sore throats, arthritis (70-75% success rate in relieving the suffering), neuralgia, shingles, herpes, sciatica and leprous neuritis. The topical ointment is an added boost to the healing processes the body naturally supplies. So, if you have any skin challenges, do not suffer in silence and misery. Try Tamanu Oil and watch your skin become younger and healthier right before your eyes.

Seven Main Complications of Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis, also known as cervical syndrome, mainly includes cervical osteoarthritis, hyperplastic cervical inflammation, cervical nerve root syndrome and cervical disc prolapsed. It is a type of degenerative disease pathological change. Now, more and more people, especially ones working in front of computer often, are suffering from cervical spondylosis. So we listed 7 major complications of cervical spondylosis hoping that you pay more attentions to your own health.

1. Dysphagia: a sense of obstruction when swallowing, a few people have such symptoms as nausea, vomiting, hoarse voice, dry cough and chest tightness.

Reasons: the esophagus becomes narrow when cervical vertebra has a direct oppression to the cervical esophageal posterior wall. And soft tissue around the esophagus makes stimulus-response when the bone spurs are forming too fast.

2. Visually Obstruction: it is shown decreased visual acuity, eye pain, photophobia, tearing and uneven pupil size, especially a narrowing vision field or sudden dropping in vision, even blindness when very severe.

3. Carotid-cardiac syndrome: it is shown precordium chest pain, chest tightness, cardiac arrhythmia and ECG ST segment change, easily misdiagnosed as coronary heart disease.

4. Hypertension Cervical Spondylosis: it can cause blood pressure increasing or decreasing, in which high blood pressure is more known as the “neck hypertension.”

5. Chest Pain: it is shown pains of unilateral pectoralis major muscle and breast which have a slow but persistence performance, when examining it may cause pressure pain of the tenderness pectoralis major.

6. Paraplegia: an early show is as follows—numbness, pain and limp in lower extremity, and some patients may walk like the feeling of riding the cotton, individual patients may accompanied by disorders or defecation and urination such as frequent urination, urgent urination, voiding disfunction or incontinence.

7. Cataplexy: it is shown a sudden falling down when standing or walking and return sober when falling. Such patients may be accompanied by the vegetative nerve functional disturbance symptoms like dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sweating.
