Causes of Vaginal Bleeding

Do you have sudden or irregular vaginal bleeding? If this is accompanied by other unusual symptoms, inform your doctor immediately.

Vaginal bleeding is a symptom that needs your attention, especially since it can come from anywhere in the female genital tract. The reason for this includes anything from vigorous sexual intercourse to cancer which usually strikes postmenopausal women. Lei’s examine them one by one.

If you’re fond of rough romancing, the lips at the vaginal entrance may be injured and bleeding will occur. Naturally, if this is the first lime you’ve had sex and your hymen was broken, expect some bleeding too.

Masturbation can be tough on the vagina, especially if you use vibrators, bottles or other foreign objects. This can cause bleeding. Another reason is deep penetration which can bruise the cervix, the opening into the uterus. If you’re using an IUD (intrauterine device) or are taking oral contraceptives, there may also be bleeding.

Pain and bleeding after intercourse and a persistent vaginal discharge may indicate uterine cancer but this is more likely to occur in women between 50 and 60. Cervical cancer has the same symptoms but it affects women aged 30 to 50.

Sometimes the reason for abnormal bleeding may not be that serious. It may signal the presence of a small polyp (growths that accompany vaginal or cervical infection), an ulcer, warts or varicose veins. Other possible causes are ovarian cysts, hypothyroidism. fibroid tumors or pelvic infection.

In helping your gynecologist establish the cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding, pay attention to other symptoms as well. These may offer clues as to the nature of your condition. Here are some points to consider from “Symptoms” by Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center:

If you’re an alcoholic or have severe liver disease, there’s too much estrogen present in your body, which can cause vaginal bleeding.

Is your skin dry and rough? Are you tired and sleepy? If so, the abnormal bleeding may be due to under function of your thyroid gland.

Have you had a fever, one that comes and goes? As luck would have it, it won’t be there when you finally get to the doctor. So tell him or her about it. Fever usually means infection.

If you’ve had little hemorrhages in your skin, or bleed a little too easily in other parts of your body, the problem may lie in a generalized clotting disorder of which the vaginal bleeding is only one manifestation.

“Whenever you wonder why you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, always remember that non-gynecological factors can be responsible, too — mood thinners, drugs and disorders of coagulation, all of which render you vulnerable to abnormal bleeding not only from the vagina but from anywhere in the body,” Rosenfeld said.

So before things get out of hand, see a gynecologist as soon as possible.

Natural Remedies For Ovarian Cyst – Water Will Help Relieve Ovarian Cyst Pain

Among one of the many great things about natural remedies for an ovarian cyst is the simple and safe methods you can use to help alleviate the pain associated with having ovarian cysts. Surprisingly, drinking plenty of water will help you to reduce the swelling of the abdomen and relieve the pain in your pelvic area. However, drinking the right kind of water is going to make a huge difference.

Women suffering from the pain of an ovarian cyst are going to want some kind of relief while incorporating natural remedies for an ovarian cyst, and one of the very best things that you can do is to drink at least ten glasses of water each and every day.

Now I know that you are thinking there is no way in the world you are going to be able to drink that much water every day. You already feel miserable and might even feel swollen and bloated, and by drinking that much water is just going to make matters worse.

But, if you sit down and really think about it, when you drink extra water, what happens. You go to the bathroom more often, which means that your body is expelling all of the extra stored water. And along with that stored water is all of the bad toxins that have accumulated over time. These same toxins might possibly be the culprit behind the cysts to begin with.

You see, the foods that we eat today are full of chemicals, toxins, hormones, pesticides, and many other things. Our bodies are not equipped to handle all of these unnatural chemicals, so they are stored in the liver where they slowly release their toxins into our bodies. The natural remedies for ovarian cysts incorporate drinking extra water so that your body will begin to flush these toxins out.

But, the type of water that you drink could also be playing a part in the formation of ovarian cysts as well.

If you are on any type of a public water system where the water supply is chlorinated, stop drinking the water right away. Again, the chlorinated water is hard for our bodies to handle, and the chemicals in the water is going to be stored in the liver. And one of the most alarming things about chlorinated tap water is studies that show by drinking it can increase your risk of cancer by ninety three percent. Just another good reason to stop drinking your tap water.

If you are unable to install a quality water filter on your kitchen faucet, do yourself a huge favor by running out to the grocery store and buying a quality bottled water. Even distilled water is better than the tap water with no filter installed.

And if you are thinking that by drinking that much water is going to have you at the mercy of your bladder, you will be for only a short while.

Once the stored water is expelled and the fresh water begins to replace it, your trips to the bathroom should return to normal, something that most people do not know. By just drinking extra water using a natural remedy for an ovarian cyst, you will help to relieve the pain of the cyst and begin to get rid of the toxins that have built up inside of your body

Does Vinegar Cause Yeast Infections Or Cure Them?

As medical researcher and former yeast infection sufferer I am often asked about the connection between vinegar and yeast infections. Most experts agree that eating certain foods encourage the growth of yeast and increase the chance of an infection. But what about vinegar? Vinegar has been proven to improve the health of many people. So, does vinegar cause yeast infections or cure them?

Yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida. Candida lives in small amounts inside everyone’s body. In small amounts it is beneficial to the body and certainly not dangerous. Candida becomes a threat to the body when it grows out of control in the digestive system and then enters the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream it circulates throughout the body attacking wherever it finds an opportunity.

Certain foods can create an environment within the body that encourages the yeast to grow. White sugar, refined white rice and flour, and some highly processed foods encourage Candida growth and damage the body’s ability to fight off the infection.

The pH level of the body also affects the growth of Candida yeast. The pH level, which stands for “potential hydrogen” is a measurement of the amount of acid in the body. The scales runs from 0 (high acid) to 14 (low acid). The pH level of human blood should be between 7.35 and 7.45. Pure water has a pH of 7 which is considered to be neutral. Even a small change in the pH level can have a significant effect on our health.

The higher the acid level the easier it is for yeast to grow. Anyone who suffers from yeast infections should everything possible to maintain their body’s pH level at the lowest healthy point possible.

Several factors that contribute to high pH levels are:

1. High stress level

2. Lack of exercise

3. Excess fat in diet

4. Excess consumption of dairy products

5. Not enough fresh vegetables and fruits in diet

White vinegar is extremely acidic with a typical pH level between 2.4 and 3.4. This extremely high acid level makes an idea environment for Candida yeast to grow out of control. White vinegar should be eliminated from the diet of anyone who has a yeast infection or is prone to getting them. Most other types of vinegar including balsamic, red wine, and rice vinegar are also highly acidic.

The only exception to the rule is apple cider vinegar which has a pH of 7.5. Often sold at health food stores, organic apple cider vinegar that is unfiltered and unpasteurized can actually lower the acid level of the body. Many researchers believe that a teaspoon or two each day will help to prevent yeast infections as well as improving overall health.

The answer to the question, “does vinegar cause yeast infections?” is yes and no. White, balsamic, red wine, and rice vinegar will definitely cause yeast infections. Natural organic apple cider vinegar will not. This is an example of how important it is to only trust a knowledgeable and respected source such as YeastFreeLife.com for your natural health information.

Some Of The Most Important Global Health Products

Some of the important health products that are needed globally include the following Vaccinations. Vaccinations are vital especially for children. Some of the diseases children are immunized against include hepatitis A, Meningococcal disease and chicken pox.

Vaccines are vital global health products that need to be readily available in health centers. Dipheria, polio, measles, mumps, Rubella and tetanus vaccines are other of the important vaccinations that need to be readily available for the children in rural as well as the urban settings.

Different vaccines are administered at different ages. Some of these immunizations will have mild side effects on the child such as a fever and soreness at the point where the shot was given. Some severe side effects can include neurological damage, cancer and even death. This can be as a result of vaccination with vaccines containing toxic substances such as mercury and aluminum phosphate.

Condoms. When used correctly and consistently, condoms are sure ways to prevent against sexually transmitted diseases. These are crucial global health products which their use is being highly advised in effort to control HIV/AIDS. Condoms are available for both men and women with various sizes, shapes and flavors. Some are lubricated to make it more comfortable during use.

Condoms have been made available for free in among others, institutions such as schools to encourage safe sex among students. Although it has been questioned that making condoms easily accessible will make the students feel more prone to having sex. However, according to the World Health Organization, the provision of sex education, condoms and counseling does not mean that the children will initiate sexual relationships. Access to these and may other essential global health products is being checked by not only the government but non governmental organizations as well.

According to the World Health Organizations’ World’s malaria report for 2010, 2.23% of deaths throughout the world were as a result of malaria. Drugs to treat conditions such as malaria are global health products that sometimes lack in some areas especially those living in poverty. The lack of these medications results to deaths especially among children and expectant women. Malaria can also be prevented using medicines such as malarone and chloroquine. It can also be prevented by sleeping under a treated mosquito net. WHO has however noted progress in fighting against malaria with more than 50% reduction in malaria cases in 43 countries over the past decade.

Dog Bite Treatment

Dog bites can be traumatic and painful experiences that can leave both physical and emotional scars. However, as long as adequate, timely and appropriate treatment is given in the majority of cases the prognosis is excellent. Although there aren’t any exact figures about 60-90% of bites are caused by dogs and between one third and a half of bites occur in children. In 70% of these cases the victims are bitten by their own dog or a dog they are familiar with. According to one report, in the UK, you are more likely to be killed by a lightening strike than you are from a dog attack!

First Aid for bites:

Before you begin to treat the victim make sure that the situation is safe for you and the victim. Make sure that the dog is not around by either taking the victim away or getting the owner of the dog to remove the dog and either chain it up or shut it up away from you. You should try to find out the name and address of the owner, the breed and immunization status of the dog if possible as this may be useful if further treatment or action is required.

Try to stop the bleeding but only use tourniquets as a last resort for severe bleeding that can’t be controlled in any other way. If possible keep the injured part elevated above the heart to control the bleeding.

The mouth carries many bacteria which can cause infection in a wound so it is vital to clean the wound thoroughly with boiled, cooled water for 5-10 minutes. Running water is preferable otherwise soak the area in water that is frequently changed (you should wear gloves while you do this to protect yourself).

Don’t apply antibacterial lotions on an animal bite as some bacteria in saliva can actually proliferate, or reproduce quickly in a short interval, in certain creams. Some may also damage the skin tissue and healing.

Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth. Dress the wound with a non-adhesive, sterile gauze and bandage. Watch for signs of infection, if they develop up to 48 hours after the bite you should see your doctor. Bites, by definition, break the skin which allows bacteria from the saliva in the animal’s mouth to seep into the open wound and can result in infection. Antibiotic prophylaxis is normally given. Prophylaxis is a Greek word meaning an advance guard; in medical terms it means a measure is taken to maintain health and prevent the spread of a disease or condition.

If any parts are actually torn off during an attack (such as an ear) then you should wrap the part in clean tissue paper, store it in a plastic bag surrounded by ice and take it with you to the hospital.

Signs and symptoms of infection:

  • Pain around the wound
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Pus or discharge
  • Fever
  • Swollen glands

First Aid for infections:

The wound should be covered with a sterile bandage leaving the area surrounding it visible so that you can monitor signs of spreading. Try to keep the wound elevated and supported. See your doctor as soon as possible to prevent further complications.

The risk of infection is particularly high in punctures, hand injuries, full thickness wounds, those needing surgical debridement, and wounds involving joints, tendons, ligament and fractures. Also infections are more likely if the wound is deep or dirty, or if there is a lot of blood under the wound.

Certain factors make some people more vulnerable to infection:

  • Diabetes mellitus. (Increases the risk of Pasteurella infection)
  • Alcoholics. (Increases the risk of Pasteurella infection)
  • Cirrhosis or liver scarring.
  • People on steroid therapy. (Increases the risk of Pasteurella infection)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis. (Increases the risk of Pasteurella infection)
  • Lymphoedema after radiotherapy. (Increases the risk of Pasteurella infection)
  • Asplenia which is the absence of normal spleen function.
  • Wounds more than six hours old.
  • Devitalised tissue.
  • Previously sutured wounds.
  • Full thickness wounds involving tendons, joints or ligaments.
  • Bites on limbs especially the hands.
  • Those with compromised immune systems due to drugs or illness.

Pasteurella is a bacteria found in most animals. If a wound is infected by these bacteria then the wound becomes red and inflamed, this occurs rapidly: within 24 hours and there is significant pain and swelling. Occasionally it can cause pneumonia or other respiratory infections; very rarely it causes kidney infections or meningitis. If it is treated promptly with antibiotics then the prognosis is good. However if any infection is left untreated then it may spread to the bloodstream causing blood poisoning, or cause swelling, stiffening of the joints and tissue damage.

Complications:

Scarring. In children, dog bites frequently involve the face, potentially resulting in severe lacerations (cuts) and scarring.

Infections:

  • Such as tetanus, rabies, septicaemia, septic arthritis, tendonitis, peritonitis, meningitis and osteomyelitis which is infection of the bone.
  • Wound infection occurs in 2-30% of dog bites.
  • Infections from bites are polymicrobial, (more than one species involved) often including anaerobes which can survive without oxygen. Common bacteria include Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Eikenella, Pasteurella, Proteus, Klebsiella, Haemophilus, Entrobacter, Capnocytophaga, Canimorsus and Bacteroides.

Fractures.

Disfigurement.

If you sustained the bite abroad then you may be at risk of rabies. At the moment the UK is largely free from rabies (although some bats carry the disease in the UK), but it is common in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and some cases have been reported in Eastern Europe. Rabies is a serious illness that can be fatal to humans so if you are bitten or scratched abroad you should seek immediate medical attention even if you don’t think you have contracted anything-rabies is virtually undetectable in the early stages. You should contact the Health Protection Agency Centre for Infection or Health Protection Scotland. Staff will need to know:

  • Your previous vaccination status
  • The country where you were bitten
  • The site and date of the bite
  • Whether the attack was provoked or not
  • Whether it was a domestic or feral dog
  • The current health of the animal if this is known.

The treatment to prevent rabies developing is called post-exposure prophylaxis and it involves 1 dose of rabies immunoglobulin (this is a blood product which contains antibodies against rabies) and 5 doses of rabies vaccine. If prophylaxis is required, it is usually obtainable from these centres as is the rabies vaccine (which is injected into the muscle) and the human rabies immunoglobulin.

Hospital Treatment:

About one in five people who are bitten by a dog seek medical attention, of those only 1% require hospital admission.

Some bites can be particularly serious and require more attention than just first aid. Also injuries can be more extensive than they appear especially puncture wounds as these are small but deep and can damage tendons or joints. Wounds can be quite complex as bites can involve sheering forces: the dog embeds its teeth into your skin, you react by pulling away and the skin tears. You should see your doctor if:

the bite is on:

  • the hand,
  • the foot,
  • a joint,
  • a tendon,
  • a ligament
  • the scalp,
  • the face,
  • the ears,
  • the nose,
  • You require antibiotics; you will also usually need admitting to hospital.
  • You think an infection has developed or is likely to develop.
  • You have bleeding that doesn’t stop after 15 minutes of direct pressure
  • You think you have a broken bone or nerve damage
  • You are not up date with your tetanus vaccine
  • You were bitten by a dog with unknown immunisation status

When you see a doctor they may ask for the following information:

– Breed of dog. This is particularly important as a bite from a larger dog is more likely to damage deeper structures such as tendons or bone.

-Health status of the animal

– Time and location of the event

– Circumstances (i.e. a provoked or unprovoked attack.)

– Location of the animal now

– Any pre-hospital treatment

– Any factors which are likely to compromise immunity such as HIV or steroid therapy

– Any recent antibiotics (if infection is present in a patient taking antibiotics then this may suggest the infection is caused by a resistant organism)

Your wound should be washed with a normal saline or drinking water to remove the dirt and bacteria. If the wound is contaminated then a 1% providone solution is used as it is better than saline. The providone is diluted so it is germicidal but not toxic to the tissues. If you have not been immunised against tetanus within the last 5-8years then a booster shot is usually administered. However contracting tetanus from a dog bite is rare.

Sometimes debridement is required which involves medically removing dead, damaged or infected tissue, either by surgical, mechanical, chemical or autolytic (self-digestion) means. Dead or damaged skin needs to be removed because it is an ideal place for infection to develop. Also debridement helps to remove any blood clots or foreign bodies that might be lodged in the wound. Cleaning the wound and debridement is more important than medication in many cases.

Once the wound has been properly cleaned then primary suturing (stitches) may be performed. This is particularly good for facial wounds as there is an excellent blood supply to speed up healing. Gaping wounds may need to be stitched, glued or held together with steri strips. Suturing can help to prevent scarring and improve the cosmetic outcome. However some wounds may be left open for a few days to ensure that they aren’t infected before they are closed up. Delayed closure for 3-5 days is usually done in cases where the bite is on the hand, those with extensive crush injuries, wounds that need considerable debridement and wounds that are more than six hours old. During this time they should be covered with a sterile, non-adhesive dressing to prevent any more bacteria entering the wound and causing infection.

Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection and should provide protection against Pasteurella bacteria, anaerobes and staphylococci. At first this may be given intravenously through a drip into a vein. Antibiotics are useful for:

  • All wounds after primary closure
  • Puncture wounds
  • Large wounds
  • Bites to the hand and wrist. Antibiotic prophylaxis significantly reduces the risk of infection in bites on the hand, but they may not be as effective for bites elsewhere.
  • Bites on the face
  • Crush wounds with devitalised tissue
  • Wounds that required surgical debridement
  • Wounds involving joints, tendons, ligaments or fractures
  • Dog bite injuries to genitals
  • High risk patients such as those with diabetes, those with compromised immune systems, splenectomy, those on chemotherapy, splenectomy, artificial heart valves, rheumatoid arthritis and those with prosthetic joints.

In mild infections co-amoxiclav is usually prescribed as a first line of treatment. However, antibiotics are not usually needed for bites that are 2 days old and aren’t showing signs of infection: infection has normally developed by this time if bacteria are present.

4 Factors To Consider When Buying A Baby Car Seat

One of the ways of ensuring that your child is safe when travelling is buying a car seat for him/her. When buying the seat you need to consider a number of factors such as:

Age of the child

Different ages are ideal for different types of seats. If your child is under the age of six months go for a seat with a rear facing restraint. If the child is between 6 months and 4 years, go for a rear facing seat or forward facing restraint. Children between the ages of 4 years and 7 years should travel in a booster seat or a forward facing restraint.

Ease of installation

How easy is it to install the car seat? Different seats have different levels of installation difficulties. There are two ways you can install the units: using a seatbelt or using the LATCH system. While both ways are effective, most parents have reported that it’s difficult installing the unit using a seat belt.

Going by these statistics, it’s safe to say that you should consider buying a seat that you can install using the LATCH system. Before making the purchase, always test how fast you are able to install the seat.

Ease of cleaning

If you have toddlers you know that messy accidents are inevitable. The child can sneeze or even vomit on the seat. To make easy to clean the seat, go for one made from easy to clean materials such as nylon. You can also consider covering the seat with a plastic especially if you are travelling long distances.

Escape proof

Toddlers become nimble with their fingers at a very young age. If you aren’t keen, they can escape the car seat which can be catastrophic. To protect the baby, go for a car seat with a two piece clip. This is to make it difficult for the child to undo the seat belt.

Conclusion

These are some of the factors that you should consider when buying a child car seat. For the seat to last for long buy it from a reputable store. When installing it, avoid making mistakes that put your child at danger.

Some of the common mistakes that you should avoid include: installing the safety seat too loosely, placing the seat at the wrong angle, unlocking the safety belt and improperly spacing the safety seat and the front of the seat. If you don’t know how to properly install the unit, ask a knowledgeable person to help you.

Brief Information on Indian Food

Indian food or Indian cuisine includes a very wide range of foods. All these are native to India and have been discovered in India. There is a lot of diversity in India in terms of climate, soil types, occupations and these cuisines also vary because of such factor. The Indian food is also influenced by the herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits that are available based on the location of the place. This location influences the climatic changes as well. The growth and evolution of Indian food has not ended because India continues to interact with other societies even today. For example the North Indian food is influenced by the Mughal rule.

Many historical incidents like trade relations, foreign invasions and also colonialism have played a very huge role in introducing a certain type of food to India. For example, Potato was bought to India through the Portuguese people. These Portuguese people also bought breadfruit and chilies to India. Indian cuisine is responsible in spreading trade relations between India and Europe. The trade of spices between India and Europe strengthened the relations between both these parties. The spices that originated from India were traded all over around Europe and also Asia.

A normal Indian diet consists of vegetables, legumes, grains, fruits, honey, dairy products, meat, eggs and also fish. As time passed, various segments of the Indian population embraced vegetarian food because of Hinduism and Jainism. India cuisine has a lot of spices included in its food and these spices include cumin, cardamom, turmeric, coriander, ginger and also garlic. Garam masala is a very popular mix of spice and is very commonly used by the Indians.

It must be understood that India cuisine usually differs from the region in which you are living in. North Indian food is a lot different from South Indian food. One main difference is that North Indians prefer wheat or atta over rice and South Indians prefer rice over anything. The sweets also differ a lot. Lunch, breakfast and dinner are different and they differ on the basis of the region mostly. However the food that the Indian eat is not limited to their region. They can behave flexibly and eat any type of food. Indian cuisine has grown in popularity in recent years and there is no doubt that Indian food is appreciated all over the world because of its extraordinary taste and flavor easily.

5HTP Side Effects

5HTP, a natural health supplement, has shown itself to be generally safe during the past forty years of scientific testing. 5HTP seems to be tolerated better by a larger number of people than its pharmaceutical cousins, the SSRI antidepressant medications like Prozac and Paxil.

Of course, nothing is completely without side effects so anyone taking 5HTP needs to be alert to the possible side effects.

5HTP has been tested enough to reveal a distinct pattern of side effects. The most common side effect of 5HTP treatment is intestinal or stomach upset. This is because about 90% of the serotonin in your body is actually not in your brain, but in your intestines.

Among other things, serotonin helps regulate the involuntary contractions of the intestines, called peristalsis, which flush waste through your system. Your intestines are loaded with serotonin so any changes in levels can affect this entire process.

Specifically which digestive side effects you might experience by taking 5HTP will depend on your personal state of health. Anything within the gamut of digestive system complaints could occur, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, cramping, even vomiting. Some people report this side effect being less severe, or even disappearing completely, if they take their 5HTP with a meal.

About 3 to 5% of people who take 5HTP report digestive-related side effects. They can range from mild to severe.

Digestive disturbances due to 5HTP treatment are most likely to be extreme with people who already have chronic digestive disorders. So if you suffer with irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, celiac sprue, ulcers or any among a long list of digestive problems, perhaps 5HTP treatment is not a good option for you. Please consult with a health care practitioner in your area.

Another reported side effect with 5HTP is vivid dreams, sometimes escalating to nightmares. This side effect occurs because dreaming and sleep depend heavily on serotonin. 5HTP and sleep go together like a chilly night and a goose-down comforter. This is why 5HTP treatment is so helpful for people with sleep disorders. 5HTP can help set the serotonin level back to a healthy level for better sleep.

On the flip side, because the biological process of sleep is delicate, 5HTP might cause your sleep to become disrupted. Everyone is different in this regard and while some enjoy extreme dreams, others find it upsetting. Often, people report that their dreams return to normal once their body adjusts to having a higher level of 5HTP and serotonin. Rarely, people choose to stop taking 5HTP because this side effect bothers them.

As you would expect, digestive disturbances and vivid dreams are both commonly reported side effects with all treatments that affect serotonin levels, such as the SSRI antidepressants, like Prozac or Paxil.

For best protection against side effects when taking 5HTP, start with a low dosage, such as 50mg or less once per day, and increase gradually. Sometimes it’s advisable to give your body periodic breaks from taking 5HTP. Taking breaks can lower the incidence of side effects too. Some people experience relief from side effects if they take 5HTP with meals.

The incidence of side effects from 5HTP is lower than it is with many other medicines. This is because 5HTP is a pure substance found already in the body. It isn’t a complex substance with many components that break down, spread throughout the body and wreck unintended havoc. 5HTP functions in the body in a relatively straight forward manner.

The same can’t be said for other most other medicines. Virtually every medicine known has some components that are beneficial and others that aren’t. It’s these unwanted components that lead to unpleasant side effects. The more pure a medicinal molecule is, the easier the body can assimilate it and this fact is to the benefit of anyone taking 5HTP.

When compared to the number of people who find the side effects of treatment objectionable, 5HTP generally fares better than its pharmaceutical counterparts. For example, in a study conducted by researcher Dr. H. M. van Praag, only 3% of the study group taking 5HTP quit, while 9% of the group receiving an SSRI left the study.

All medicines produce side effects people find intolerable, it’s to be expected. The question isn’t IF people don’t like the treatment, it’s how many people object to the point of discontinuation? With 5HTP, the answer is generally less than with comparable treatments.

All in all, 5HTP side effects are minimal or nonexistent for most people. The vast majority of people who take 5HTP report a positive experience. Dr. L.J. van Hiele, who has been one of the leading researchers of 5HTP, reported, “no contraindications or significant side effects in our series of tests…follow-ups of the blood pressure, living function, urine and EEG’s revealed no anomalies.”

Of course, this generally positive news does not negate the fact that some people find 5HTP side effects intolerable. All medications should be judged by weighing the benefits against the risks. Only you can determine where the line is right for you.

Acid Reflux Homeopathic Remedies

Acid reflux is a pain. Literally, it really is. Thankfully, there are plenty of homeopathic remedies we can use to alleviate the symptoms and sometimes even cure the problem.

The remedies I prefer for resolving my heartburn woes are the following: calcium citrate, digestive enzymes, DGL, and apple cider vinegar.

Calcium citrate is relatively new in the acid reflux world. People often ask: why would I take the ACIDIC calcium citrate to resolve my acid reflux issues? Well the answer is, it’s method of action is actually on your lower esophageal sphincter (LES valve) and not your stomach acid pumps themselves. The reason you feel heartburn is not necessarily because of too much stomach acid, it’s usually because your LES valve is not working correctly and isn’t preventing your stomach acid from reaching your esophagus or throat. The thought behind calcium citrate is that the increased calcium flow in your blood works with your smooth muscles to help them function correctly.

Digestive enzymes are a natural substance that you can take to aid in faster digestion. Your body already produces these enzymes, but sometimes the conditions in your stomach (especially if you’re on PPIs) is not conducive to these enzymes functioning like they should and you aren’t digesting as fast as you should be. Ensuring proper digestion will help empty the contents of your stomach sooner, which means there’s less of a chance for a reflux to occur.

DGL is a form of licorice root extract that does an amazing job at promoting tissue healing and forming a protective layer in your digestive tract. It doesn’t necessarily act on acid or the LES valve itself but it will certainly make you feel better if you are having a rough reflux kind of night.

Apple cider vinegar is, along with digestive enzymes, another method of ensuring proper and fast digestion. Sometimes, the cause of your reflux isn’t because of too MUCH acid, sometimes it’s because you have too LITTLE stomach acid. The logic is: your LES valve will remain shut in highly acidic conditions, but in low acidic conditions it will open up. So by increasing the acidity in your stomach you effectively communicate to the LES valve that the doorway to the stomach needs to be closed. Generally, you’ll want to drink about 8 oz of water with a tablespoon of vinegar, adding a bit of honey to taste. Of all the homeopathic remedies for acid reflux, I’d have to say that ACV is probably the most popular.

Sometimes I dread meal time (even though I love food!) because I know that about an hour later after eating I’m going to be hit with all kinds of symptoms that are disconcerting: bloating, heartburn, possibly even a sore throat if the acid manages to reflux all the way up to your mouth (which can happen). But I no longer fear meal time because these homeopathic remedies have really helped resolve my reflux issues. Since starting the regimen above, I can comfortably say that I have my reflux under control.

Obviously certain dietary and lifestyle changes are needed in order to strengthen your lower esophageal sphincter (LES valve). It’s the usual doctor spiel: avoid tomatoes, onions, chocolate, peppermint. Don’t drink alcohol, and quit smoking. Yes, this stuff does indeed help, but it never really fully stops your acid reflux from occurring. Often times we are prescribed medications like Nexium or Protonix, which are proton pump inhibitors that focus on blocking your stomach from producing stomach acid. But I can’t help but feel like we’re disregarding some home remedies that work almost as well (if not better) than any PPI.

The problem here is that too much stomach acid more often than not isn’t the problem. The problem is a weak LES valve. Address that problem, and your issues will be resolved.

Risks of Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique is a non-invasive therapy using various hands-on massage methods to help a client recuperate from painful conditions through the use of manual therapy. It uses techniques based on reciprocal inhibition, stretching, and the use of pressure on the muscle tissues that are contracted and relaxed during the manual manipulation.

The therapy is great for dealing with various health issues especially joint pain, muscle stressing, spasms, and cramps, edema, relief of stress, tension, and chronic fatigue, and other disorders and dysfunctions of the human body. It is also great for delivering other health benefits to the patient’s physical constitution such as the proper circulation of blood which is considered as one of the most important benefit you can get from a natural treatment. A wide range of movement, flexibility, structural integrity, physical coordination, and strong joints are also other improvements to look for when undergoing a Muscle Energy Technique therapy.

Although there are quite numerous benefits that can be taken from a therapy session using Muscle Energy Technique, any patient who is into this alternative medical care should also keep in mind that it also has disadvantages in the form of physical health risks and dangers. Most of the clients who had series of treatment sessions in this natural healing art are satisfied and successful with the use of the therapy for their personal medical needs. Especially when handled by a certified massage therapist or practitioner, a client can expect a smooth, risk-free therapy with a peace of mind during the whole therapy process.

The possible and most notable risks that would most likely happen during a therapy session are done when an untrained individual performs the massage techniques on the wrong approach. Instead of improving the condition of the muscle tissues that are affected by certain health issues, they attain more damages that adds up to their current state. Nerves will be damaged with improper stretching or use of force known as pressure in massage therapy. Bruising, muscle soreness, and inflammation are some of the conditions to expect when mishandled by a practitioner who is not well versed in human anatomy and in Muscle Energy Technique. Structural integrity will also suffer and chain health problems will follow due to this condition.

In general, the therapy is not that risky as compared to other types of therapies that includes painful and quite unique methods during their therapy session. However, being vigilant and cautious about everything in an alternative medical care is the best thing to do to make sure that you will not have any problems in the long run. Besides, your body will be the one paying for the consequences when things go awful.

What Exactly Is Cholesterol?

Those of you who are fighting against high cholesterol and working towards lowering your cholesterol generally have many questions about your cholesterol problems. First things first, you should find out exactly what cholesterol is. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance produced in the liver and other cells. It can be found in many food products that we consume on a daily basis such as dairy products, eggs, and meats. However, cholesterol is not always bad because our body needs a certain amount to be able to function properly. Our bodies cell walls, known as membranes, need this cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, and other acids that help you to digest fat. When your cholesterol intake level exceeds the amount of cholesterol needed that is when health concerns begin to develop.

As your cholesterol begins to increase, plaque begins to form in your arteries which narrows the passage way through which blood flows. Over time, plaque buildup will cause your arteries to harden which is one of the major causes of heart disease. If not enough blood and oxygen are able to reach your heart muscle then chest pains may occur. When your blood supply to the heart is completely blocked this will inevitably result in a heart attack.

Although cholesterol may seem completely negative, there is actually a “good” cholesterol among the three different types of cholesterol, also known as lipoproteins, which are present in your body. These types include high density, low density, and very low density. Each specific type depends on how much protein there is in relation to fat. Low density lipoproteins (LDL) is known as the “bad” cholesterol because it can cause plaque buildup along the walls of your arteries. As your LDL level increases so does your risk of heart disease. On the other hand, high density lipoproteins (HDL) is known as the “good” cholesterol and helps the body to dispose of LDL cholesterol. Maintaining an increased level of HDL cholesterol is a good thing because if your HDL levels are low, your risk of heart disease is increased. Lastly, very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) are very similar to LDL because they are made up of mostly fat and not much protein. VLDL carries triglycerides, another type of fat, which is more specifically the excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in your body that is then stored in fat cells in your body.

Generally speaking, there are a wide range of factors that can affect cholesterol levels. Diet is the main factor that contributes to high cholesterol levels. Saturated fat and cholesterol in the foods you eat leads to higher cholesterol levels and cutting back on saturated fats is key in reducing your cholesterol. Being overweight and not getting enough regular exercise is a risk factor for both heart disease and high cholesterol. By losing weight and exercising, most people will see a decrease in their LDL and an increase in their HDL cholesterol levels. Most doctors recommend trying to be physically active for at least 30 minutes per day. Age and gender is another factor in cholesterol levels because as you get older your cholesterol levels will begin to slowly rise. Prior to menopause, women tend to have lower cholesterol levels than men but during post menopause a women’s LDL cholesterol tends to rise. Individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes need to be able to understand, control, and manage their diabetes in order to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. In some cases high cholesterol can run in your family and your genes may determine how much cholesterol your body naturally makes.

Simply put, becoming informed about your cholesterol is a key step in starting your fight against high cholesterol. Now that you understand what cholesterol is and how it can be caused you have the knowledge to make the necessary changes in your life to start reducing your cholesterol levels.

Heart Health and Clean Arteries

Clogged arteries are responsible for a number of ailments including heart pain, high blood pressure, and peripheral arterial disease. Many of my male patients are shocked when I tell them that plaque build-up may even be causing their erectile dysfunction. How can that be? All of these conditions stem from the same cause, insufficient blood flow through arteries.

In the first part of this series, you learned how coronary artery disease and blocked arteries could lead to serious health consequences. I recommended some non-drug, non-surgical treatments you can do on your own to both prevent and improve arterial disease and its symptoms.

Now I’d like to expand on an alternative method of dissolving plaque and increasing blood flow in arteries using specific vitamins and safe chemical compounds. This therapy is called oral chelation.

What Is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation therapy has been used since about 1955 for treating heart/arterial disease. The idea of using chelation for heart disease sprang from using chelation for toxic lead, arsenic, and mercury levels. A compound called calcium disodium EDTA, an amino acid, binds to those metals. The EDTA-bound metal is then removed from your body through urination.

Using this toxic metal removal model, it was thought that a variation of the same compound, disodium EDTA, would bind to plaque and remove it from arteries. Based on this same principle, oral chelation formulas were created.

Oral Chelation Supplements

People have taken oral chelation supplements for years as an alternative treatment for coronary artery disease. In fact, because of their widespread use, the National Institute of Health recently began a clinical study to document the specific benefits of chelation therapy.

As I tell my patients who ask me about oral chelation formulas, I feel the better ones contain a lot of heart/artery-health promoting vitamins, minerals, and food-derived chemicals that can be of benefit in promoting heart and artery health. Let’s look, then, at what I think a good oral chelation supplement might contain:

B-Vitamins – like B6, B12, and folic acid, known to be crucial to heart health in reducing homocysteine, a chemical that promotes plaque. They also maintain energy.

Magnesium, potassium, selenium – these are heart-healthy minerals that keep heart muscle functioning correctly, regulate heartbeat, and prevent cholesterol from oxidizing and turning into plaque.

Bromelain, malic acid, garlic – these food-based compounds from pineapples, green apples, and garlic dissolve saturated fats and prevent them from hardening into plaques.

TMG (trimethylglycine) – also known as betaine, derived from beets, this chemical IS actually FDA-approved for treating high homocysteine levels.

EDTA – as noted above, this chemical binds to arterial plaque and removes it. EDTA is also FDA, and USDA, approved as a food additive.

NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) – a chemical found in high protein foods, it is an amino acid that, like EDTA, also acts as a toxin binding/removal agent.

How Does Oral Chelation Work?

Oral chelation formulas come in pill form and are taken like you would any other supplement. They go to work by binding to mineral deposits (namely calcium which plaque is), breaking it down and liquefying it so it can be removed from your arteries. Drinking plenty of filtered water daily will help flush the chelated minerals and toxins out of your blood.

It’s a good idea not to take any mineral supplements until a few hours after you take a chelation formula as the minerals can be chelated out of your system. Prescription medicine should also be taken a few hours apart from chelation supplements.

Vitamin C and Vitamin E supplements should be taken as they are antioxidants which help prevent oxidation of cholesterol into plaques.

Benefits of Oral Chelation Formulas

There are several arterial health conditions which can benefit from the artery-flushing effects of oral chelation. They are:

Coronary artery disease, or CAD – blockages in the heart can cause heart attack.

Peripheral arterial disease, or PAD – lack of blood flow to legs and feet causing pain.

Erectile dysfunction – resulting from blocked arteries, lack of penile blood flow.

Carotid artery disease – decreased blood flow to the brain, can cause stroke.

Although oral chelation therapy may still be a controversial subject, it has its following of loyal supporters. According to Everyday Health, a recent survey of people who used chelation therapy, 62% said it gave them a sense of control over their heart disease. For optimum effectiveness, chelation supplements should be combined with a heart/artery healthy diet, no smoking, and beneficial exercise.

As with any supplement, read labels and be sure you have a quality oral chelation formula with ingredients such as those mentioned above. Consult a doctor familiar with the use of oral chelation formulas. They can monitor you, ensure their correct usage, and avoid any possible adverse effects that may arise.

Part 2 of 2 – The Cancer Cure "They" Don’t Want You to Know About

If you have cancer, starting a vitamin D regimen is very important. It’ll save your life.

Taking less than 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily is too weak, leaving cancer untouched. Taking more than 40,000 IU of vitamin D daily is too dangerous, leading to vitamin D toxicity. Therefore, a strong and safe cancer-cure dose could range from 10,000 IU to 20,000 IU of vitamin D daily.

There are additional cancer-cure regimens involving tomatoes and broccoli, and cayenne pepper that you can use with your vitamin D regimen. But first, let’s look at some things that interact with vitamin D.

VITAMIN D INTERACTIONS

Some drugs interact with vitamin D. Corticosteroid drugs such as prednisone, prescribed to reduce inflammation, impair vitamin D metabolism. Some weight-loss and cholesterol-lowering drugs reduce vitamin D absorption.

Anti-seizure drugs phenobarbital (Luminal), phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), and fosphenytoin (Cerebyx) deactivate vitamin D to some extent. Antibiotics such as rifampin (Rimactane) also deactivate vitamin D to some extent.

The following drugs, if taken with vitamin D, decrease vitamin D’s intestinal absorption: cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol (Colestid), orlistat (Xenical), mineral oil, and the fat substitute Olestra.

The oral antifungal medication ketoconazole reduces blood levels of vitamin D in healthy men, reducing their blood calcium levels. Contrastively, taking vitamin D with thiazide diuretics may over-elevate blood calcium levels.

Some medical conditions interact with vitamin D. Taking vitamin D with hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, lymphoma, adrenal insufficiency, or Crohn’s disease may heighten blood calcium levels too much.

Let’s suppose your drug or medical condition interacts negatively with vitamin D. Should you avoid taking vitamin D? Not necessarily. You should instead take vitamin D under your doctor’s and pharmacist’s supervision. In fact, you should do this even if your drug or medical condition doesn’t interact with vitamin D!

TOMATOES AND BROCCOLI AND CANCER

Tomatoes have anticancer effects. Tomatoes reduce testosterone level; some cancers such as prostate cancer need testosterone to thrive. Also, phytochemicals in tomatoes help to reduce cancer.

Like tomatoes, broccoli is also anticancerous. Broccoli contains sulfur compounds that degrade carcinogens.

It has been known that tomatoes and broccoli individually have anticancer effects. But only recently known that when eaten together, they’re much more powerful!

Researchers recently found that the tomato-broccoli combination dramatically shrinks cancerous tumors, especially prostate tumors.

The more you include tomatoes and broccoli in your meals, the better. This is easier than you think. For example, tomato sauce is a main ingredient in most Italian foods. So all you have to do is add broccoli – and you have a powerful anticancer cocktail!

Do you enjoy Caesar salad, Chef salad, Chinese chicken salad, Cobb salad, Greek salad, or Michigan salad? If so, make sure you add plenty of tomatoes and broccoli, and say goodbye to cancer.

Eaten raw or cooked, the tomato-broccoli combination is a powerful anticancer cocktail. In fact, eating tomatoes and broccoli cooked may make their cancer-fighting constituents more bioavailable.

CAYENNE PEPPER AND CANCER

Capsaicin is the active component of cayenne peppers. Capsaicin irritates animals and humans by producing a burning sensation at the point of tissue contact.

The American Association for Cancer Research reported studies of capsaicin killing prostate cancer cells by programming them to kill themselves. These studies also showed that capsaicin-treated tumors shrank dramatically compared to untreated tumors.

The University of Nottingham’s cancer study suggested that capsaicin can trigger cellular death in human lung cancer cells as well.

Besides squashing prostate and lung cancer, capsaicin can also squash leukemic cancer. For example, there have been studies showing capsaicin inhibiting the growth of leukemic cells.

Also, capsaicin had been found to stunt and kill cancerous bladder cells.

In Thailand, where much spicy food is eaten, gastrointestinal, colorectal, and stomach cancers are rare compared to the rest of Asia. In Mexico, where much spicy food is eaten, these same cancers are rare compared to the USA.

Researchers found that, besides programming cancer cells to kill themselves, cayenne pepper may also damage the cancer cells’ membranes and limit their oxygen supply. And that cayenne pepper selectively targets cancer cells.

CAYENNE PEPPER DOSE

What’s the ideal amount of cayenne pepper needed to combat cancer? According to herbal specialist Vilhaelm Torvund, the recommended dose for all herbal supplements is as follows:

To treat acute medical conditions, take 500 mg four times daily;

To treat chronic medical conditions, take 1,000 mg four times daily;

To treat severely chronic or terminal medical conditions, take 1,000 mg eight times daily.

Therefore if you have cancer, you should take 1,000 mg of cayenne pepper capsules eight times daily. If this is inconvenient, you can instead take 2,000 mg four times daily.

If you experience stomach irritation while taking 2,000 mg of cayenne pepper capsules four times daily, then you should instead take 1,000 mg eight times daily.

On starting a cayenne regimen, you’ll probably experience some diarrhea. Once your body becomes acclimated to the cayenne, you’ll no longer experience the diarrhea.

I buy my bottle of cayenne pepper from the retail store Rite Aid. They sell a high-quality brand made by GNC. It’s important to buy high-quality cayenne pepper, because the low-quality ones may contain harmful impurities.

My only other suggestion is to take cayenne pepper capsules with food and beverages to reduce any possible side effects.

CAYENNE PEPPER INTERACTIONS

Cayenne pepper capsules may interact with certain prescription drugs. For example, cayenne may increase the effects of warfarin (Coumadin), increasing the risk of bleeding. Also, cayenne may increase the absorption rate of prescription drugs in general.

Cayenne pepper capsules may interact with a certain medical condition. Don’t take cayenne if you’re allergic to cayenne peppers. Possible allergic reactions are difficulty breathing, throat closure, facial swelling, and hives.

It’s wise to take cayenne pepper capsules under your doctor’s supervision.

SUMMARY

Individually, vitamin D, tomato-broccoli combinations, and cayenne pepper have strong anticancer effects – but together, they slap the toughest cancer into submission! Taking vitamin D and cayenne pepper supplements, and eating tomatoes and broccoli can be called the DTBC (D vitamin, tomato-broccoli, and cayenne) plan.

The DTBC (D vitamin, tomato-broccoli, and cayenne) plan consists of doing the following:

#1: Take 10,000-20,000 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) tablets daily.

#2: Take 2,000 mg of cayenne pepper capsules four times daily with food and beverages.

#3: Include both tomatoes and broccoli in your meals. The more you do this, the better.

#4: Use the DTBC plan under your doctor’s supervision.

#5: Use the DTBC plan with your cancer therapy (e.g., radiation, chemo, or surgical therapy).

P.S. If you’ve never had cancer, are healthy, but want to prevent cancer, you can use the DTBC plan. Nevertheless, there’s no need for you to take more than 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily or more than 1,000 mg of cayenne pepper four times daily.

A Peculiar Discovery: Delving deeper, I discovered that not only does the DTBC plan cure cancer, but it also cures heart disease and obesity. Perhaps cancer, heart disease, and obesity are somehow connected.

Common Sense: If you use the DTBC plan to cure your heart disease or obesity, you should do so under your doctor’s supervision.
