MRSA Staph Symptoms Can Lead to Suicide Attempts

MRSA stands for Methicilln Resistant Staphyloccus Aureus and it’s a disease that’s only been around for about 20 years, so it’s still spreading around United States and most countries and most people are fairly vulnerable to it, since they haven’t built up their defense mechanism. MRSA staph symptoms usually show themselves as skin infections such as swollen, red, pus filled and painful boils/abscesses. MRSA can also infect the lungs and cause pneumonia which will display itself as shortness of breath, fever, heavy coughs and chills.

In certain cases it can progress into necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating bacteria/flesh-eating disease. These spread quickly and can in turn lead to suicide attempts since they are so visually scarring. Pay special attention if the person has MRSA in nose symptoms or MRSA in bloodstream symptoms, since these can cause additional complications. MRSA bloodstream symptoms usually show themselves from surgical wound infections, so it’s not very common. It is also very important to monitor MRSA symptoms in children, since they can have problems coping with the disease(especially if it’s the flesh-eating kind), which can in turn lead to a suicide attempt.

The reason necrotizing fasciitis can cause suicide, is because it’s a disfiguring disease that can cause the person to get scared and depressed, which can in turn make the infected person try attempting suicide to end their suffering, especially if they find out that they have the fatal version of the disease.

If you think suicide is not a real threat or that it only happens to a couple of people, consider this. More than 1.1 million Americans attempt killing themselves every year in United States. In fact 1 out of every 14 Americans knows someone who will kill themselves during this year. Worldwide the numbers go up to 10-20 million suicide attempts a year, which is more or less the equivalent of the entire population of Australia, trying to kill themselves. So as you can see, it’s a real threat, and should be monitored carefully.

So if you know someone suffering from MRSA, you should learn all the different suicide warning signs so that you’ll know if they ever become suicidal. If you yourself are infected, you should provide such a guide to someone you see daily, so that they can stop you from taking your own life. Remember MRSA can usually get cured, you just need someone to interfere when you get clinically depressed, so that they can stop you from taking your own life.

Theta Healing for the Common Cold

Theta Healing effectively removes the symptoms of common cold without any of the side effects one would associate with traditional medicine. A cold is something we all suffer periodically. The symptoms of common cold are stuffy head, sore throat, tiredness, stuffy and runny nose, congested chest, and sometimes a fever. It can be a very uncomfortable virus to suffer. There has never been a proven cure for the common cold, only treatments that can make a cold more bearable. Sometimes the treatments can make one tired and unable to complete tasks or jittery which also makes it impossible to lead a normal life for about 5-7 days.

Fortunately, another option is available. You only need to have faith in the treatment. Theta energy healing therapies are based on using your subconscious to heal your body. Tapping into your higher self at Theta level is something you do every night while asleep. It has been proven that it can also be achieved while awake with the proper skills through Theta therapy.

Why should you consider trying to wipe the symptoms of common cold with Theta therapy? Here’s why: You have probably tried the other traditional treatments with their accompanying side effects. With Theta healing, there are no side effects. Here are some of the reasons:

* Theta therapy addresses the mind/body connection to help the body heal itself without the use of drugs.

* Theta energy is a natural treatment that compliments traditional medicine. It also teaches you a new way of thinking which enables your body to heal itself through your mind.

* Western medicine is based primarily on expensive and invasive methods to treat common ailments that we all suffer. Theta energy treatment is non-invasive and can present instant healing results by simply developing your thought process in the right way to facilitate healing. Theta healing, if practiced, will lead to many positive changes in your life over and above improving your health.

* Drugs on the market often have side-effects that can lead to more serious problems than the illness they are designed to improve.

It is an action that initializes the body to begin to heal itself at the Theta level of subconscious thought. The mind and body work together to thwart illness from the body altogether. Now that we have provided you with the pros and cons of trying Theta natural healing versus using the traditional methods of medicine, we hope that you will decide to give Theta Healing a chance. Trying Theta Healing for symptoms of common cold and similar illnesses might point you into a new path of enlightenment and a happier and more contented life.

The Healing Power of Sunlight

Today, we are going to discover the healing power of sunlight in helping us to enjoy the health we desire. More than you may think, your well-being is linked directly to the sun. The sun not only triggers the reaction of photosynthesis in plants, which produces the oxygen you breathe and the food you eat, but it also determines the occurrence of night and day. This influences the natural cycles that control the rhythmical ebb and flow of the chemistry in your body’s internal environment. These cycles include the very important cycle of sleeping and waking. Disruption of the sleep-wake cycle can be harmful to your healing system and lead to disease, whether it occurs over long periods or on an irregular basis.

For ages now, the therapeutic value of natural sunlight has been seen to be an essential element in healing. Since ancient times, physicians have prescribed regular sunbathing as an effective treatment for many common disorders. For example, the ability of sunlight to build strong bones is well documented. Natural sunlight is the best source of vitamin D, which is required for absorbing calcium in the intestines, ensuring strong bones as you grow old.

Have you been feeling overly depressed lately? Well, sunlight can lift your mood and help you to have a positive outlook for the day! Periods of darkness or extreme lack of sunlight can cause you to feel “down-in-the-dumps”. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a common form of disorder that occurs during the winter months in colder, darker climates and is effectively treated with natural sunlight.

Numerous studies have indicated the therapeutic role of sunlight in improving the health of those afflicted with a variety of illnesses and diseases. Take a look at these examples:

# Sunlight stimulates immune system activity and improves immunity.

# Sunlight is a natural disinfectant. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight helps kill viruses and bacteria. A well- known example was the plague epidemic of the Middle Ages during which people characteristically lived in dark, narrow conditions. Millions died and the only people who survived were those living in the country where they were exposed to fresh air and sunlight.

# Sunlight exposure on the chest, and particularly on the back, helps recovery from respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and even tuberculosis.

# Sunlight helps to heal bed sores and various skin ulcers.

# Sunlight helps to oxygenate and purify the blood.

# Sunlight has been found to assist in the treatment of arthritis, including the common rheumatoid arthritis.

# Sunlight helps to break down and eliminate uric acid, lowering it’s concentration in the blood and alleviating symptoms of gout.

# Sunbathing has been prescribed by Russian and Eastern European doctors in treating obesity after finding that sunlight stimulates the thyroid gland which regulates your metabolism.

# Studies in Russia have shown that sunlight affects the deep organs, helping to cure peptic ulcers.

# Sunlight helps to normalise blood pressure and blood sugar.

# Sunlight reduces blood cholesterol levels. It helps to reverse plaque formation in the coronary arteries which are the arteries that feed the heart. It also reduces plaque formation in the arteries

leading to the brain, lowering the risk of a stroke.

# It has been observed that regular exposure to sunlight has decreased most cancers, except those of the skin, in animals and people.

# Sunlight decreases the formation of free radicals which are linked to aging.

As some studies have indicated that overexposure to the sun can damage your skin, it is advised by physicians to limit unprotected exposure to 15 minutes per day.

So, add some sunshine to your life!

P.S. This was for your health, here’s something for your wealth:

Most Common Orthopedic Surgeries

Orthopedic surgeries are those that deal with the muscles and skeleton in the human body. This kind of surgery corrects problems that arise in the skeleton, attachments, ligaments and tendons. Some other common problems arise from injury to the spine or damage due to aging. The range of treatments includes traction, amputation, hand reconstruction, spinal fusion, joint replacement etc.

Some of the other type of ailments that orthopedics treat are broken bones, strains, sprains and dislocations. Most of the times, orthopedic surgeries include adding foreign material to the body such as screws, wires, pins, tongs etc. to hold the bone or the artificial bone in place. With advanced technology, there are plenty of improvements made in the replacement of bones and joints and the materials used for replacement.

Here are the most common orthopedic surgeries:

Total Joint Replacement Surgery

Those diagnosed with severe arthritis or severe joint pains are advised to go or total joint replacement surgery. This surgery enables the patient to gain increased range of motion. After recovery, the patient experiences lesser pain and can resume normal life as soon as possible. During the treatment, your surgeon assesses the damaged parts o your joint and replaces it completely with metal or plastic parts that are shaped with near to natural perfection to enable normal movement without pain.

Total Shoulder Replacement

Total shoulder replacement greatly helps reduce pain and improves the joint movements over a period of time. Damaged parts of the bone and cartilage are replaced with metal or plastic. This surgery greatly improves the range of motion too.

Spine surgery

Spine surgery is very complicated. There are many ailments that lead to spine surgery. One of the most common reasons cited is severe back pain. This back pain is so severe that it hampers day to day life of the patient. Once the surgery is complete, the patient experiences diminished pain and a dramatic improvement in movement and activity. One of the most common types of back surgeries are spinal fusion. During this procedure, the orthopedic surgeon joins two vertebrae of the back bone together. This restricts the motion and reduces stress on the spinal cord, hence reducing the pain.

ACL Reconstruction

ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament. This is one of the major ligaments that stabilize the knee movements. This ligament needs to be reconstructed when it ruptures. An orthopedic surgeon can easily reconstruct this ligament by using your own tissues or by using tissues from a donor and a new ACL is constructed. The new ligament is secured in place with screws and other devices.

Overall, orthopedic surgeon can replace, reconstruct or cure ailments that are connected to your musculoskeletal system. The results of these treatments ensure that the patient can resume day to day life with diminished pain and increased capability of movement. With advanced technology, near to natural reconstructions are possible and after the patient recovers, he can resume routine life soon.

With the help of physical therapy, movements are refined and patients can move about freely!

Get-Well Gift and Hip Surgery – The Right Gifts For the 5 Stages of Recovery

Hip surgery represents an amazing opportunity for people who have had chronic hip pain or problems walking to experience an impressive improvement in their quality of life. There are different conditions which precipitate the need for hip surgery, but most of them involve hip replacement.

In hip replacement surgery, the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. The surgery is conducted in order to relieve arthritis pain or to fix severe damage to hip joints after a hip fracture.

There are multiple possible techniques that a surgeon may choose in the case of hip surgery. In part, the differences between them relates to the location and type of incision made. Examples are the posterior approach, the lateral approach, the antero-lateral approach, the anterior approach and the minimally-invasive approach.

Depending upon the type of surgery carried out, recovery times – and the patient’s experience during recovery – can vary.

If you are interested in knowing more about a get-well gift and hip surgery, here are 5 typical stages of recovery that a hip surgery patient might experience (your friend’s situation may vary). Included is a suggestion for appropriate gifts at each stage:

1. Recovery room (first 2 hours):

Immediately after surgery, the patient will still be under anesthesia. They will be moved for about two hours to the recovery room where they “come to” and wake up. During this time, there are to be no visitors allowed in the area. While sending a gift into this room is probably not possible, you may want to have some flowers ready for when they are transferred out of this room.

2. Intensive care unit (ICU) is recommended for some patients (24 hours):

For some patients, about 24 hours in the ICU is recommended. This is up to their doctor and depends upon various factors. It is unlikely that visitors will have access to the patient during their time in ICU, so better to hold off on giving a gift at this stage.

3. Remainder of hospital stay (several days in some cases):

The patient will remain in the hospital for several days or more. Usually, physical therapy is begun the day after surgery. This would be a great time to give a gift such as a soothing CD, a gift basket full of goodies, or a handmade photo album.

4. Initial at-home recovery:

Once the patient is transferred home, the initial recovery phase will require more personal care for the patient than it will later down the line. The patient will likely use crutches or a walker to get around. At this point, the best gift might be simply your paying a personal visit to the patient to ask if you can help them out around the house.

5. Long-term recovery:

For several weeks after surgery, the hip surgery patient will still be experiencing recovery, although the inconvenience and pain will be much less than before. At this time, any gifts that help them make their way around the home – or just something to cheer up the place a bit – will be appreciated.

Consider getting the right gift to suit the hip surgery patient’s given stage of recovery.

The Truth About ADD-ADHD and Hyperbaric Oxygenation Treatment

ADD/ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common childhood medical condition. Your child may have it; your child may not. But how does one know? Here are some tips how.

Does your child act without thinking first, has trouble sitting still or often starts but does not finish things? Do such signs start to cause problems in school or at your home? If your answers are all “yes” then your child may have ADD/ADHD.

Though not all children who have restless behavior are related to ADD/ADHD, it is still better for us, as parents, to know more about ADD/ADHD. Fidgeting, poor concentration, or impulsiveness that start to disrupt performance at home, school, or relationships with other children are the subtle but telling signs of ADD/ADHD.

Whether the condition is ADD/ADHD or not, you can know for sure only by seeing the child’s doctor, getting the right diagnosis. Once it is established that he or she indeed has the disorder, then the next step would be to seek the appropriate treatment. Doing so will help the child cope with his or her condition. In fact, this may even make social interaction in school and outside much easier.

And of note too, once you find our that the diagnosis is ADD/ADHD, one modern alternative medicine that can help cure ADD/ADHD in children is the hyperbaric oxygen treatment. First used by scuba divers to relieve them of decompression sickness, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is now used by United states hospitals to cure carbon monoxide poisoning, soft tissue infections, and wounds that don’t heal.

What happens in a hyperbaric oxygen treatment is that patients are sealed in a hyperbaric chamber filled with 100% oxygen that is pressurized 1.5 to 3 times the normal atmospheric pressure. The treatment usually last 30 minutes to 2 hours and parents can accompany their children inside the hyperbaric chamber. The treatment is non-invasive, non-toxic, and very much safe. Due to the pleasant characteristics of the treatment listed above, some parents have even reported that their children await their next schedule for the treatment.

One way also of availing hyperbaric oxygen treatment is by buying or renting a hyeprbaric chamber. Through such accessibility, the treatment has become more closer to home and there is no longer a need to go to hospitals.

Whatever you choose, whether it is owning your own hyperbaric chamber, renting one, or going to a hospital, getting your child the best possible treatment is what matters.

Common Cases and Causes of Paralysis

Being unable to move a certain part of the body, whether small or large, can be very traumatic. Many people will have to live with this condition for the rest of their lives. Paralysis is the inability to move or control a part of the body and can be one of the most difficult things to live with. Damage to the nerves due to injury or disease can sever the connection between the nerves and the muscles muscles, resulting in non-functioning and sometimes deteriorating muscles.

If you have ever heard a condition ending with 'plegia' or 'paresis', it refers to the paralysis or significant weakening of a part of the body. Different limbs with paralysis have different names. Some of the more common words used to describe paralysis in a part or parts of the body are:

Monoplegia (or monoparesis) – This is the inability to use a single limb. Monoparesis is a significant weakening of a single limb.

Hemiplegia (or hemiparesis) – If a person is very weak or paralyzed on the left or right side of the body he or she has one of these two conditions. Stroke victims can experience hemiplegia. Polio also attacks the nervous system and can leave a victim paralyzed.

Paraplegia (or paraperesis) – If you have ever seen a person in a wheelchair who was completely unable to get out of the wheelchair, he or she has paraplegia. Paraplegia is the condition of having both legs paralyzed. If the wheel-chaired person is able to move to a different area while upright, even if at a slow pace, he or she probably has paraperesis.

Quadraplegia (or quadriplegic) – The quadraplegic condition is being paralyzed from both legs and arms.

Any kind of nerve-damaging injury or disease can cause paralysis. Also, brain and spinal cord damage will result in nerve damage or disruption. Motor neurones in the nerve constantly send signals to the muscles to maintain tightness. Some common conditions that cause this are: severe neck / head / back trauma, tumors, stroke, spina bifida, and multiple sclerosis. Damage to one side of the brain also causes paralysis to the opposite side of the body. Many injuries are work-related and sometimes result in legal compensation for the victim.

Preventing Pilates Related Injuries

I received a question from the Ask Experts site yesterday that I feel the need to share, since this is coming up more and more with the advent of mass Pilates DVDs and underqualified instructors.

Question: “Hi, I am a beginner in Pilates, when I try to do the V shape or half way crunch, I get a HORRIBLY painful cramp right below my rib cage on the right side, it stops me cold. I feel like I’ll never get rid of this flabby belly that ruins all of my cute outfits. Have you heard of this?”

First, no Pilates beginner should be doing the teaser (the V shape), which is an intermediate/advanced exercise that requires deeper abdominal recruitment to avoid overusing the hip flexors and external obliques.

Second, there is nothing “Crunch” like in Pilates. We do not tighten & compress the midsection like someone who has buttoned his vest to his pants, but seek to strengthen the muscles functionally without compression by using the pelvic floor and transverse abdominus.

While Pilates mat is the most accessible form of Pilates, the equipment is actually more appropriate for beginners. Joseph Pilates invented the apparatus to assist as well as resist movement, enabling people to exercise who otherwise may not have been able to move properly. It is not true that one must do Pilates mat before taking on the machines.

Then I saw an ad for “Cardiolates,” a concept that is at once fascinating and horrifying. Note that Pilates is anaerobic exercise, like weight training. To attempt to blend Pilates and cardio into one workout regimen is just plain wrong, is contrary to the whole basis of Pilates exercise, and will most likely result in lots of injured people who feel that they cannot do Pilates because it hurt them

I hate this mass production of Pilates because it makes Pilates seem simply like a group of exercises (that look like other exercises) that you can do fast, slow, or otherwise. That’s just not it! Pilates is about how you exercise; it’s about how you move and breathe and get into positions. Pilates is about balance and proper movement, not simply about hauling oneself into a certain position.

Improperly done Pilates can cause– hernias (from bearing down too much) muscle cramps (from improper recruitment) neck & back injuries (from improperly flattening the back and neck causing muscle strain and vertebral compression and from overstretching or over-extending the back and neck–all from improper instruction on how to stabilize the pelvis) rotator cuff injuries (from pushing large range of motion in the shoulder joint without proper ribcage stabilization) osteoporotic spinal fractures (from too much forward flexion and other movements contra-indicated for osteoporosis) and other injuries

Listen up –badly taught and poorly executed Pilates can cause you injuries that will be with you forever, so please please find a certified Pilates teacher to work with and be vocal when things hurt or you are not sure how to do something.

Deep Tissue Massage – Muscle Tendon & Ligament Relief

Deep Tissue Massage or myofascial release is a massage technique that focuses on releasing restrictions in the deeper layers of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Deep tissue massage releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas.

Using slow strokes and deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles not with the grain, deep tissue massage first warms the soft tissue before targeting deeper muscles groups.

Deep Tissue Massage – How Does it Work?

Deep tissue massage is both corrective and therapeutic. It uses two methods, direct or indirect and is effective in releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing toxins, relaxing and soothing muscles.

The direct method applies pressure to the muscle with the intention of finding resistance in the body, and maintaining the pressure until the resistance is released.

The indirect method moves in the opposite direction of the resistance.

With both techniques the amount of pressure applied is dependent on the amount of resistance.

Fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms are all used with long, slow strokes.

Because of the focus on a specific area some clients find deep tissue massage uncomfortable and it may

cause some soreness during or after.

Providing the massage is carried out correctly any soreness should disappear in a day or two.

Deep tissue massage does not require great strength, nor does it need to be painful and applying pressure for the sake of it can be ineffectual if done incorrectly.

Of the two methods, direct and indirect, there are many different combinations.

Some of the more well known include:-

o Polarity Therapy

o Thai Massage

o Triggerpoint Therapy

What are the benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage?

Unlike a regular relaxation massage, deep tissue massage works effectively on the skeletal structures that lie deep within the body.

Many people seek a deep tissue massage to help in treating crippling diseases, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.

When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.

Through controlled manual manipulation, deep tissue massage breaks down scar tissue and crystallization, loosens muscles, releases toxins and allows blood and oxygen to circulate properly.

It is important to drink plenty of water afterwards to flush away the toxins released during massage.

The key benefits of deep tissue massage include:

o Elimination of the blocks that cause muscle tightness

o Increases circulation of blood, lymph, cerebro-spinal and interstitial fluids

o Can resolve many chronic pain patterns by releasing deeply held emotions that cause tension

o Helps improve the functioning of the internal organs and any associated symptoms or diseases

o Improves posture and mobility

o Helps to reduce tension and the automatic reflexes to stress

How effective is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage can be very effective, but one has to be realistic about how much can be achieved in one session.

Simply asking for more pressure and thinking that if the therapist pushes hard enough, all tension will be released within an hour is unrealistic.

Chronic knots and tension built up over a lifetime can only be addressed with a series of treatments.

Most therapists will offer advice on a program that includes exercise, work on your posture, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.

Is Deep Tissue Massage Safe for Everyone?

As with most massage treatments, deep tissue massage is not recommended for certain people.

Massage should not be done directly over bruised or inflamed skin, open wounds, tumors, areas of recent fracture, abdominal hernia, rashes or skin disease.

It should also be avoided by:

o People with cardiovascular conditions and heart disease especially in cases of thrombosis, phlebitis and oedema

o Pregnant women and people with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before considering a massage

o Immediately after surgery

o Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor

Deep Tissue Massage – Choosing a Therapist

When considering a deep tissue massage, ensure you choose a therapist you feel comfortable with and one that comes from a reputable organization.

Salons, spas, health and fitness clubs typically offer deep tissue massage, or you contact a mobile spa and have a deep tissue massage in the comfort of your own home.

Pinched Nerves – How to Determine If You Have One

Sciatica, everyone has probably heard of it but do you know what it really is? Most might say that it’s a pain you get in your leg but do you know where it comes from? What confuses a lot of people and even doctors is that sciatica is not a diagnosis, I repeat that sciatica is NOT a diagnosis, in fact there are 10 reasons at least as to why you can get sciatica, so if you go to your doctor and they give you that diagnosis and hand you a pill, get them to think again. Sciatica by definition is pain experienced in the distribution of the sciatic nerve, the sciatic nerve consists of 5 nerves exiting your lower lumber (back) area and exiting your sacrum (pelvic area), these nerves join as one and is called the sciatic nerve. This runs down the back of your leg to your ankle and sometimes affects the sole of your foot. The sciatic nerve feels sensations and allows you to move the muscles in your leg. Sciatica is a symptom rather then the cause.

Here is a list of the 10 causes of sciatica pain:

  1. Sacroiliitis – an inflammatory process within the sacroiliac joint (pelvis) can be due to infection, sprain of the joint (misalignment), or an arthritic condition.
  2. Iliolumber Syndrome – inflammation or sprain of the iliolumber ligament, a big ligament that runs across the top of your pelvis used for bending and twisting.
  3. Quadratus Lumborum Syndrome – heard of the QL muscle, this is a muscle in your lower back; it can get tight and painful and refer pain down your leg.
  4. Trochanteric Bursitis – the bursa at the upper side of your leg is inflamed.
  5. Ischialgluteal Bursitis – inflammation of the bursa in your buttock, when you sit it is aggravated.
  6. Posterior Facet Syndrome – facet joints are a part of your vertebra, they can be misaligned or degenerated.
  7. Meralgia Paraesthetica – a nerve entrapped that passes through your hip flexor muscle within your pelvic area, can be due to pregnancy, tumours and infection.
  8. Disc Herniation – also known as a prolapsed disc or bulging disc these days, when you injure a disc in your lower back due to strain or misalignment.
  9. Lateral Canal Stenosis Syndrome – degeneration or arthritis where the nerve passes through the spine causing symptoms.
  10. Myofascial Syndromes – when muscles are tight around the lower back and pelvic area they can cause referring pain.

You can have one of those conditions occurring or you can have 3-4 at once occurring but until you get a proper diagnosis of your condition and the primary cause discovered you will not get better. Sciatica occurs when the function of the nerve is affected, weakness, numbness or pins and needles can be present in the legs with or without lower back pain. Certain treatments are affective with sciatica, such as chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage. What is also important is giving your body the nutrients it needs for tight muscles, inflammation and arthritic conditions, those include:

– Calcium and magnesium, a good mineral supplement with calcium and magnesium restores the balance back in your muscles and relaxes them, also prevents cramping.

– Fatty acids, a good fat supplement such as flax seed oil or a fish oil supplement is good for your joints and bones helping arthritis and joint problems

– Glucoseamine has been shown to help with arthritic conditions I also use it in my clinic to get stability within the ligaments and joints.

Lifestyle changes are necessary to help the condition and to prevent recurrence, such as stretching and exercises. First, get the problem professionally diagnosed, take supplements to support the condition and make changes in your lifestyle.

Strep Throat is More Than Just an Ailment

Strep throat is inflammation and swelling of the throat, tonsils and lymph nodes. Unlike sore throat, which is caused by infection with viruses, strep throat is caused by infection with bacteria. While most sore throats generate mild symptoms and clear naturally, without the aid of medical treatments, strep throat generally requires a course of antibiotics. Untreated strep throat can lead to serious complications such as otitis, heart problems, renal problems and even rheumatic fever. On the premises of a weak immune system, strep throat can be very severe, in which case doctors recommend prompt medical treatment with antibiotics.

Strep throat is caused by infection with group A streptococcus bacterium, a strong and very contagious infectious agent. Strep throat is very widespread in the flu seasons and it can be easily acquired by entering in contact with people who carry the bacteria responsible for causing the illness. Streptococcus bacteria are airborne and they can be contracted simply by breathing the same air with an infected person.

Lots of people believe that strep throat only affects children. This idea is unfunded, as strep throat can be acquired by anyone, regardless of age. Although strep throat has the highest incidence in very young children and teenagers, it can also occur in adults. In fact, strep throat is more likely to generate complications when it is acquired by adults. Adults who suffer from strep throat usually have more intense symptoms and they need a longer period of recovery from illness. When it occurs in the elderly, strep throat is more difficult to overcome and the infection with streptococcus bacteria is very likely to become systemic.

When suffering from strep throat, it is recommended to pay a visit to your physician as soon as possible. The doctor will perform an overall physical examination, in order to reveal any clinical signs of bacterial infection. Unlike viral forms of the illness, strep throat usually causes enlargement of the tonsils and lymph nodes, symptoms that are very suggestive for infection with bacteria. Fever is also a very revealing sign of strep throat. The presence of these common symptoms of strep throat is usually sufficient for diagnosing the illness. In order to confirm the clinical diagnosis, doctors may also take samples of the inflamed tissues for laboratory analysis. If the cause of illness proves to be infection with group A streptococcus bacteria, the doctor will prescribe you an appropriate treatment with antibiotics.

In spite of their side-effects, medical treatments with antibiotics are the most effective means of curing strep throat in present. Doctors strongly recommend a 10-day course of penicillin or amoxicillin to all people affected by strep throat. New generation antibiotics such as cephalosporins can overcome the illness in an even shorter amount of time, curing bacterial infections within 4-5 days of treatment. Prescribed in the incipient stages of the illness, an appropriate medical treatment with antibiotics can provide a quick symptomatic relief for people who suffer from strep throat. Furthermore, antibiotics can prevent the occurrence of serious complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney infections and heart disease.

Negative, self talk rules your life and no matter how hard you try, you find it hard to motivate yourself to do something positive.

You just feel totally zapped and struggle to make it through the day.

When you feel like this, what can you do to boost your energy and make you feel alive and connected again?

One way to get into the groove and get your mojo back is eating well.

If you wish to improve your energy, then you need to include certain foods in your diet, especially those that boost your metabolism and give you a steady flow of energy throughout your day.

A diet rich in raw and whole foods, fruits, vegetables, herbal teas, grains, nuts and sprouts provides your body with the range of nutrients, minerals and vitamins it needs to sustain you throughout your day.

However, the pace of life and/or poor dietary habits means it is hard for you to eat healthily and well.

Natural supplements offer you a chance to enhance the quality of your diet and can help you manage your stress levels as well as boost your energy levels. Combined with a healthy diet, lots of regular exercise and a supportive relationship, natural supplements offer you a natural and gentle energy boost.

The seven natural supplements listed below have a beneficial effect on brain function and boost physical energy. If you are new to herbal supplements, always seek the advice of a qualified herbalist or naturopath to ensure you use supplements that are ideal for your particular constitution.

1. Evening Primrose Oil – this is helpful for a range of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and eczema, but its greatest benefit is in the relief of premenstrual syndrome. Evening primrose oil is a rich source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) or as it is more commonly known as, fatty acid. As such it is able to be converted by the body into prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are powerful natural anti-inflammatories which also improve blood flow through the smallest capillaries.

2. Spirulina – Spirulina can be cultivated or farmed micro-algae. It has one of the highest protein contents of all natural foods. It contains 60 percent complete protein (meat consists of only about 20 – 25 percent complete protein). Spirulina is packed with iron, calcium, fibre, vitamin C and amino acids. Spirulina helps to manage blood sugar levels and cravings. It helps the body to detox and as it is so nutritious gives you a natural energy boost.

3. Echinacea – Echinacea contains elements (polysaccharides, betaine, alkalides and echinolone) that stimulates and supports your immune system by activating the white blood cells to fight infection and trigger the use of natural killer cells and anti-bodies. Echinacea gives your immune system a natural energy boost. It is anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial and can be used to treat colds, tonsillitis and skin ulcers.

4. Guarana – Traditionally used by the Brazilian rain forest Indians; this plant has been used for thousands of years as a tonic, stimulant and as an aid to boost vitality. Guarana increases energy, reduces stress and improves mood and performance. Critics claim this is due to the small caffeine content in guarana. Acupuncture, High Cholesterol & High Triglycerides

One of the most prominent health concerns in America today is high cholesterol. Much of the public understands high cholesterol and high triglycerides as being a cardiovascular disorder, or a health concern due to heart and blood vessel troubles. In fact, this is actually a disorder of the body’s ability to properly breakdown and digest, or metabolize, lipoproteins (chains of fat and protein molecules).

These lipoproteins in the form of cholesterol, and/or triglycerides, accumulate in the blood and this greatly increases one’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

Western medicine focuses on treating the symptom of high cholesterol to prevent cardiovascular disorders from occurring but rarely does it focus on the root causes which allow the cholesterol to build up in the first place: The weak metabolic functioning of the body, the poor diet, and the unhealthy lifestyle of the patient. Rather it relies on statin medications which have a very high propensity for severe side effects while acupuncture and Chinese medicine offers the same benefit without the influences of statin medications and therefore without the potent side effects.

Lifestyle and nutritional/dietary changes can greatly reduce one’s cholesterol for they can increase how one’s body breaks down the cholesterol itself and limits the intake of cholesterol inducing foods.

If one suffers from high cholesterol or high triglycerides they can: Increase consumption of foods low in cholesterol such as fresh cold water fish, apples, bananas, carrots, garlic (this is a great one to increase for it is very beneficial for this purpose), olive oil, grape fruits (do not take if you are on statin medications), and oats and bran. Also, increase intake of niacin for it alone can decrease cholesterol levels (see your supplement practitioner prior to beginning this), Co-Q10, quality EPA-DHA omega 3 fish oils, vitamins B5, C, E, along with chromium picolinate, and lecithin are great additions into one’s diet.

One must also decrease the harmful cholesterol influencing foods such as tobacco products, sugar, greasy/fried foods, wine, beer, cheese, and red meats. Along with these suggestions, the National Institute of Health recommends taking 2 grams of plant sterols (phytosterols) per day to combat cholesterol. The plant sterols aid in the body’s reabsorption of cholesterol into the large intestine for elimination from the body.

In regards to lifestyle advice, one must exercise regularly to decrease the cholesterol within the blood vessels. Instead of grabbing a high sugar drink such as a soda; drink oolong, black, or green tea in its place for they help the body metabolize consumed fats. This is especially effective when drinking the teas after a meal.

In addition, acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulations are used in the treatment of cholesterol and high triglycerides for these medicines focus on the patient’s underlying weaknesses along with the symptom of high cholesterol and its influences of high blood pressure, etc. Acupuncture focuses on the underlying weakness in particular while the Chinese herbal formulations have been proven to effectively target the high cholesterol levels. Within 2 to 3 months of treatment with both acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulations, patients should start to see their cholesterol levels decrease.

With a change in diet and lifestyle, along with the proper application of acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulations, one will have the health benefiting tools at their disposal to lower their cholesterol and triglycerides and avoid the cardiovascular complications which result from such conditions.

Understanding Canine Diabetes In Beagles

Diabetes is a common disease in breeds like Beagles. It is important for every dog owner to know the facts about this disease.

– Diabetes is an endocrine disease. It has two types; diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus. This disease occurs when the body produces insufficient insulin, a kind of hormone essential in sugar metabolism.

– Diabetes mellitus is the most common of the two types. Also called “sugar diabetes”, this disease occurs when the body produces less insulin. Diabetes mellitus is further subdivided into two; Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when there is insufficient production of insulin in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand occurs when there is an inadequate response by the dog to insulin.

– Diabetes insipidus is a condition wherein the excretion of diluted urine is in large amount and can not be reduced even if the fluid intake is reduced. This happens because of the kidney’s inability to concentrate urine. This type of diabetes is caused by a deficiency of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) known as vaporessin.

– The common symptoms of diabetes are excessive drinking and urination. The dog may also suffer weight loss though there is an increase in appetite. In addition, poor skin and hair coat, liver disease, vomiting, weakness in the rear legs, secondary bacterial infections, dehydration and rapid breathing may also be present in dogs with diabetes.

In addition, poor skin and hair coat, liver disease, vomiting, weakness in the rear legs, secondary bacterial infections, dehydration and rapid breathing may also be present in dogs with diabetes.

– Dogs between seven and nine years of age are usually the victims of this disease. Unspayed female dogs and breeds like Dachshunds and Beagles are at greater risk for developing this disease.

– Insulin, administered through injection, is the main medication of this disease. Types of insulin vary depending on its effect and on how the victim respond to it. Short-acting insulins are effective for one-to-four hours, medium-range insulins are effective for four to 24-hours and long-range versions of insulin last from eight to 28 hours. Too low dosage of insulin will not control diabetes and too high dosage can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level). If possible, medication should be given at the same times everyday.

– There are also other measures to keep diabetes in control. The dog’s weight and food intake should be managed well because blood sugar is hard to control in overweight dogs. Instead of giving one full meal a day, experts suggest to feed several smaller ones (at least twice a day). Another way to control obesity is through regular exercise.

Morbid Obesity – Big Questions

The modern world is a complicated and confusing place. Americans seem to have reacted to that confusion by becoming bigger themselves. In the past two years I’ve seen my own weight climb steadily until it reached 190 pounds on my 5’6″ frame – at which point I realized that there was an ISSUE here. My weight was an issue that couldn’t be ignored or rationalized away any longer. I’ve whittled myself down to a more normal 164, but I’m still a big woman, and have a ways to go before I hit a healthy BMI (body mass index) of roughly 150 pounds, which puts me in a healthy weight range for my height.

My ballooning weight is far from abnormal in today’s world. Cable television has filled many time slots with shows on the morbidly obese. Having spent three days in bed recovering from the flu I’ve had ample opportunity to watch shows on the “Half Ton Man…Woman…and Teen” and seen “Big Medicine,” along with a slew of other shows devoted to the morbidly obese.

The primary question that springs to mind is how can people afford to be so heavy? Especially the people who manage to reach 500 plus pounds? Many of these shows feature people who are unemployed and bed ridden. So how do they get the vast quantities of food needed to stuff their over-stuffed bodies?

The obvious answer is that for every morbidly obese person there is one or more enablers who are willing to purchase food, in most cases prepare it, and feed their loved ones to death. It’s obvious from these programs that most of these people abhor their hefty hindquarters. It’s also apparent that the mothers (yep it usually seems to be the mamas) live in fear of their pudgy progeny dying. And that is a very real possibility. The morbidly obese are more prone to heart attacks and diabetes along with any number of health concerns. TLC’s “Half Ton Woman” died from obesity related complications on cable TV, which is not your average end to daytime programming. Being fat literally killed her.

So what’s the deal? If I can hit 190 and think – wow – this is unacceptable. I’m one chubby monkey and have to do something NOW, why can’t everyone?

To put this question into perspective an 800 pound person’s life expectancy is zero. They could literally keel over dead at any moment. As far as I know even heroine junky alcoholic crack heads have a better life expectancy than that.

The striking thing about many of the people on the cable programs is that they generally have one or more obese parent and so the child’s weight gain may at first be considered less concerning than if the child were born into a family where people maintained a healthy weight.

My own father was obese for long periods of time. My own weight inched higher in conjunction with the weight of my sisters. We were skinny together…and grew increasingly chunky together. It’s much less disconcerting eating fries and burgers when everyone else is eating that way as well.

One recent article also suggested that obesity and poverty go hand in hand. The poor do have less access to high quality or organic food, but while recent studies have found that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. Six hundred calories from McDonald’s – and six hundred calories from a well balanced meal still equals the same amount of weight. Of course a healthy meal has a myriad of other benefits, but as far as weight gain a calorie is a calorie.

The average American woman can maintain her current weight eating 2,000 calories a day. The average American man can eat 2,500 without gaining weight. McDonald’s may be the obvious choice in a poor neighborhood, but that doesn’t mean it needs to make you fat. A cheeseburger, soda, and a small fry at McDonald’s is 550 calories. A breakfast of three eggs, two slices of bacon, and toast is roughly 500. A dinner of spaghetti with meat sauce is roughly 280 calories per serving – have two and that’s still only 560 calories. This leaves 390 calories for a glass of milk, a soda, or a reasonable snack. Eating less food, even if it’s unhealthy food, may not do much for your cholesterol, but it will save a person from a whole slew of other health problems. Figure out what a portion of food really is – eat crap if you must – just don’t supersize it.

Big box stores like Walmart do offer fruits and vegetables – and even the small corner markets have canned fruits and vegetables if fresh aren’t available. Frozen fruits and vegetables are a great alternative since they don’t usually add sodium and will last months if necessary. Being poor doesn’t mean being stupid – and it doesn’t mean being either.

Given the high cost of obesity we should be looking at how to deal with it as a society. Obesity clearly negatively impacts the health of our children and in many cases it can impact their academic progress. In schools obesity should be treated with the seriousness given to any other addictions students may have. And frankly – perhaps enabling your minor child to become obese should be looked at like any other form of child abuse – necessitating state intervention and counseling for both parent and child.

HMO’s and Employers and the government should be allowed to intervene if an employee or a HMO participant tops 300 pounds – offering counseling, nutritional interventions, and surgery if necessary before weight gets to the point where it’s endangering the health of the patient – and most likely the health of patients’ family, as well. The morbidly obese cost us all money in disability payments and raised health care costs. Obesity, like crime, is everyone’s problem and our society should have better tools for dealing with it.

I wish my peer group had come to me somewhere around 170 pounds and said, “Look – this is not a road you want to travel. Here are some options, let me help.”

The good news is that healthy eating is just as contagious as bad habits. When I began to change my eating habits my obese father followed suit. Healthier and happier he was also able to cut his blood pressure medication in half. My sisters have slimmed down and now fall within a normal weight range. My sister’s family are watching their habits more closely in order to impact the slight chunkiness of my 11 year old niece, before her weight gets out of hand. Now when I meet my family members they are likely to suggest going for a walk or hike – instead of meeting over a meal. If we start making changes, instead of excuses, there is a much healthier light at the end of our big fat tunnel.
