Negative Implications of Cannabis Abuse on General and Oral Health

Cannabis, commonly known as Marijuana, is the most frequently used illicit drug in America. According to National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), there were about 15.2 million past month users in America in 2008. It also stated that about 2.2 million people used Marijuana for the first time in 2008. This averages to about 6,000 Marijuana initiates per day. Many people are getting addicted to Marijuana, ignorant of its harmful effects on health. Today, Cannabis abuse is a major concern because of its negative effects on general physical, mental and oral health.

There are three main forms of Cannabis: Marijuana, Hash and Hash oil, all of which contain the main psychoactive constituent, ‘Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol’, simply called as THC. Cannabis abuse affects almost every system of the body including the cardiovascular, respiratory, mental and oral systems. Some of the negative implications of Cannabis abuse are:

Effects on general health

When someone smokes or consumes Cannabis, THC passes from the lungs or stomach into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body.

According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), heart rate is increased by 20 to 100 percent shortly after smoking Marijuana. It is also estimated that Marijuana users have almost five times risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking Marijuana. Aging people or those with cardiac vulnerabilities will be at higher risk.

Long-term smoking of Marijuana is associated with negative effects on the respiratory system. The smoke from a Cannabis cigarette has the same contents as tobacco smoke apart from harmful contents like carbon monoxide, bronchial irritants, tar and higher levels of other carcinogens than in tobacco smoke. Chronic smokers of Cannabis have increased symptoms of bronchitis, including coughing, wheezing, phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, and increased risk of lung infections. The symptoms of bronchitis are more common in Cannabis smokers than non-smokers of the drug. Cannabis abuse results in dysregulated growth of epithelial cells in lungs, which may lead to cancer.

Effects on mental health

Acute effects of Cannabis abuse vary greatly between individuals depending on the dosage, method of administration, environment and personality of the user. Long-term Cannabis abuse increases the risk of serious psychiatric illnesses.

THC acts upon specific sites in the brain, called cannabinoid receptors. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors are found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thoughts, concentration, sensory and time perception etc. Obviously, Marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Marijuana abuse can increase rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia.

Effects on oral health

Cannabis users are prone to oral infections. Generally, Cannabis abusers have poorer oral health than non-users, with higher decayed, missing and filled (DMF) teeth scores, higher plaque scores and less healthy teeth gums. An important side effect of Cannabis abuse is xerostomia (dryness of the mouth caused by malfunctioning salivary glands). Cannabis smoking and chewing causes changes in the oral epithelium, termed ‘cannabis stomatitis’. Its symptoms include irritation and superficial anaesthesia of the oral membranous tissue covering internal organs. With chronic use, this may progress to neoplasia (growth of a tumor).

Cannabis use causes oral cancer

Chronic smokers of Cannabis have an increased risk of developing oral leukoplakia (thick white patches on mucous membranes of the oral cavity, including the tongue. It often occurs as a pre-cancerous growth), oral cancer and other oral infections. Oral cancer related to cannabis usually occurs on the anterior floor of the mouth and the tongue.

Cannabis consumption also has its effects on driving, affecting motor skills, reflexes, and attention. This increases accidental risks. Cannabis abuse has potential to cause problems in daily life also. Cannabis abuse impairs several important measures of life achievement including physical and mental health, cognitive abilities, social life and career status.

The increasing prevalence of Cannabis use demands awareness of the diverse adverse effects of Cannabis abuse. People should know about these effects and take timely action in order to stay away from its negative implications.

Review of Benchmark Fiberglass Entry Doors by Therma-Tru

Doors are not made equal. Exterior doors, such as the front door, are the most exposed to climate change and repeated use. Fiberglass is now a preferred surface material for doors because it does not rot, warp or crack like wood, nor does it rust or dent like steel. Traditional doors are a throwback to the time of exquisite handcrafting and craftsmanship but this artistry would be wasted on wood surfaces that would soon fracture and crumble too early. Benchmark fiberglass entry doors are now some of the most popular for new homes and replacement doors for old homes that once had wooden doors like mahogany or oak. These products are backed by the Therma-Tru name, pioneers in fiberglass doors, and exclusive distribution by Lowe’s stores. As wood doors are sliding from staple to next best, fiberglass doors are gaining interest. Architects and remodelers want to know how to find the right ones and make the most of those.

Benchmark fiberglass entry doors are increasingly known for achieving a balance between design and price. They are good-looking but affordable, an attractive possibility to savvy builders and homeowners who may be on a budget. Their classy designs mirror handsome doors of old but clean lines harmonize with unexpected elements like glass and metal. At the same time, their reasonable prices compete with real hardwood doors that reigned over the market with an iron hand in the past. The real test is in weathering and usage. If your location is troubled with fluctuating outdoor conditions, or if it is a high-traffic area requiring a new door, you should have a realistic budget with a ceiling for a top-of-the-line product. For a low-traffic area, especially inside the home, you may opt for something charming and mid-priced.

The promise of a long-lasting, energy-saving product that offers peace of mind adds to the appeal of Benchmark doors. They feature a “leak protection pad” that has been designed like a special corner pocket to block air and moisture where it is most expected to penetrate. Dual bulbs and dual fins make a heavy-duty door bottom sweep that further seals up against air and water infiltration. These enhance the quality of energy efficiency attached to fiberglass, which provides three to five times more insulation and lets natural light inside homes. The door sill has been developed to resist rotting and corrosion, with a cap using non-wood composite material and adjustable hardware using stainless steel. Greater resistance to rotting and insect damage can be had with the optional jamb, primed and ready for painting. An optional three-point locking system promises increased security. It has also been constructed from stainless steel and is resistant to corrosion.

Therma-Tru Doors, which owns the Benchmark by Therma-Tru brand, specializes in doors made from fiberglass rather than steel, composite material or wood, specifically, pre-hung entry doors and door systems. It manufactured the first fiberglass entry doors more than 25 years ago. With Benchmark fiberglass entry doors, the company is working on establishing an expertise in other aspects of the door business on a par with veteran manufacturers such as Masonite, Milgard and Feather River. An order delivery system and aftersales service are examples of those other aspects that have great impact on buyers. As Benchmark entry doors are pre-hung, you can choose do-it-yourself installation or professional installation, either by exclusive carriers Lowe’s or a company you have contracted. Unless you are skilled, installing a door yourself would most likely be troublesome. If the door area must adjust to a particular architecture, design or age of the house, you should probably obtain a professional installation service on your own.

Custom Vs Prefabricated TLSOs – A Comparison of Two Approaches To Back Support

Custom and Prefabricated TLSOs

Definition of a “T.L.S.O.”

A T.L.S.O. is an acronym that stands for, thoracic, lumbar, sacral orthosis. Orthosis in this context is a fancy word for brace. – Essentially, this kind of brace helps to support your spine from just under your clavicle down to where your legs meet your body when you sit. There are different versions of this kind of brace, such as a low profile, mid profile and high profile design.

Prefabricated Designs

When someone gets a prefabricated TLSO they will be getting a brace that will help to support their spine. The benefits of a prefabricated TLSO is that can be delivered shortly after an order is placed for the brace. This usually means that the brace will be delivered within 24 hours, if not much sooner. Sometimes, time is such a critical part of the equation that a prefabricated orthosis might be the only option for the patient. These braces can be very helpful for people, under these circumstances, if you do not have time to get a custom made brace. This might be the biggest plus of getting one of these kinds of supports. – These braces actually can provide patients with support and that is also why they are used extensively by medical professionals today that do not have the capacity to make the custom orthoses themselves.

Custom Made TLSOs

It is hard to beat the support that a custom made TLSO can provide. Many people have contours that a prefabricated brace will try to address. Many times it may address a person’s body type well, but it is really hard to beat the support levels of a custom made brace. With some prefabricated models, shear forces and rotational issues that are extremely important, may be lacking with a prefabricated design. This is at the center of the debate for medical professionals, including orthotists. – Custom made TLSOs are made from measurements and a cast of a person’s body and in this way, an orthotist believes that they can help to control the areas that a prefabricated brace might miss on occasion. Better control of rotation and shear forces are some of the benefits of these kinds of orthoses (braces).

Where to Get a Custom or Prefabricated TLSO

When you need to get a back brace it is best to work with a local, licensed orthotist. If the individual is licensed, then individuals they have provided orthoses (braces) for at least one years time, passed rigorous tests and have studied the subject of orthotics for an extensive period of time. These individuals do not just show up, there is a lot of training that is involved and with experience comes an eye for detail that others might miss.

Canine Neurological Disorders

There are so many different canine neurological disorders that dogs and puppies can experience it would be almost impossible to cover them all on this page. Having said that we will aim to cover the most common canine neurological disorders, starting with a list compiled below and then going into more detail covering each disorder. Remember that the illnesses listed below do not always display noticeable symptoms until the disease has progressed.

Please do not use this information as a diagnostic tool – we are not Vet’s and this is for information only.

If you have any concerns we advise you to take your dog to the Vet asap as canine neurological disorders can be progressive, degenerative and lead to death if not treated fast.

  1. Canine Vestibular Disease
  2. (leading to seizures) – Epilepsy
  3. Degenerative Myelopathy
  4. CDS – Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome
  5. Parkinsons
  6. Rabies
  7. Hepatic Encephalopathy
  8. Acquired Myasthenia Gravis
  9. Distemper
  10. Strokes

Now lets discuss all of the canine neurological disorders listed above in a little more detail.

Canine Vestibular Disease – This illness is also a serious issue if it affects your dog (as is any illness). Canine Vestibular disease has very similar symptoms to the symptoms of a stroke.

The main causes of Canine Vestibular disease include congenital factors – this is when it is transmitted to the puppy before it is even born. The most common age for dogs to be affected by this disease is when they are middle aged or older (around 13 years of age).

Another cause of the disease is through tick bites causing a nasty infection known as Rocky Mountain Fever. It can also be caused by lesions affecting (on) the brain. If your dog has recently suffered an ear infection (middle ear infection) this has also been known to cause the disease.

The symptoms of Canine Vestibular disease can include…

  • Coordination problems – this can include your dog walking around in circles.
  • Watch for problems with your dog’s face. The disease is known to cause your dog to have problems being able to control the muscles in his face/head.
  • Watch for sickness in your dog – motion sickness is another symptom of the disease.
  • The nervous system is also affected by the disease sometimes causing a dog’s eyes to roll backwards and forwards in the socket – this is called Nystagmus.

Epilepsy – This condition is actually more common in dogs and puppies than you might think. Epilepsy normally starts when your puppy is very young (as early as 2 years of age). Fortunately Epilepsy can be controlled quite well with appropriate medication – so your puppy is quite capable (even with the illness) of living a full and active life.

Seizures can come in a variety of types including….

  • Tonic Clonic Seizures
  • Petit Mal Seizures
  • Partial Seizures
  • Complex Partial Seizures
  • Status Epilepticus
  • Cluster Seizures

Your dog will go through three stages when having a seizure including the…

  1. Pre-Ictal Phase – this is just before the seizure starts – you may notice that your dog has sudden behavior changes.
  2. Ictal Phase – This is when the seizure starts – your dog’s muscles may go into an uncontrollable condition that leaves their legs straight and stiff – your dog may also be paralyzed when suffering the seizure. The seizure may last anywhere from several seconds to a few minutes. Your dog may lose control of his bowels during the seizure and may also salivate.
  3. Post-Ictal Phase – This is the period after the seizure has ended.

Degenerative Myelopathy – This disease is also referred to as Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy. This illness normally affects dogs between the age of 7 years of age and 14 years of age. The main cause of the disease is thought to be due to the sheath that surrounds the neurons in the spinal chord is attacked by dog’s immune system which leads to a progressive and degenerative loss of coordination in the back legs (Ataxia) and eventually paralysis. Basically the brain and the back legs stop communicating effectively.

Below are some of the symptoms that you should look out for.

  • Dogs with this disease will often stand with their back legs very close together with the feet also pointing in different directions due to the lack of coordination.
  • Your dog may appear to stagger when he walks around the House or when outside.
  • You may notice that your dog is actually not capable of walking as the disease progresses – this may leave your dog trying to drag his feet along the floor – causing problems with the paws and nails.
  • As the disease continues to progress your dog’s back legs may become completely paralyzed.
  • Balance will be affected.
  • You may notice that your dog is unable to control his bladder and/or bowels.
  • The disease can progress quite quickly (in months) or it can take a few years.
  • Eventually the nerves in the cranium and respiratory system will be affected which will lead to you making the very upsetting decision to have your dog put to sleep. Follow your Vets advice throughout the disease as you don’t want your dog to suffer any more than you would want to suffer.

CDS – Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome – This refers to dementia (as dogs can get this degenerative disease too). Always watch for sudden behavior changes in your dog as this is normally a good indication that something untoward may be happening.

The signs and symptoms of CDS can include the following…

  • Your dog may not respond to you when he is called.
  • Watch for signs of disorientation.
  • Does your dog seem confused and even walk around in circles?
  • Watch for changes in your dog’s personality – normally you as the owner will be the first to notice any things that ‘just don’t seem right’ about your beloved pooch.
  • Memory loss is another symptom.

Parkinsons– This is one of those canine neurological disorders that many owners don’t realize can actually affect dogs as well as humans with very similar signs and symptoms. This disease is hereditary and will normally affect younger dogs.

The signs and symptoms of Parkinsons in dogs can include…

  • Muscle jerks and twitches.
  • Your dog may suffer from the onset of tremors
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Problems walking and a difficulty in balancing

Hepatic Encephalopathy-Also referred to as Portosystemic Encephalopathy. This disease is caused by renal failure in dogs or to put this is into an easy language that is more understandable, this disease is caused when the liver stops working properly and adequately removing toxins from your dogs blood. Due to the livers failure to work properly these toxins eventually build up in your dog’s blood stream leading to Hepatic Encephalopathy. This disease can be treated but if it is left to progress it can lead to….

  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Coma
  • It can even be fatal if not treated.

Rabies – This disease is one of the more serious illnesses that a dog (or human) can suffer from. The disease is transmitted via saliva and can be fatal. The incubation period for the disease can vary with signs and symptoms of Rabies sometimes taking several months to appear. Due to the fact that most bites which transfer the saliva and disease occur around the head and facial area the disease can affect the brain quite quickly – with incubation being as short as 2-3 weeks.

As previously mentioned the disease is normally transmitted via a bite. The infected saliva carrying the Rabies virus will then travel via the nerves in your dogs body and then directly to the brain. The virus will then return through the nervous system again and start affecting the glands and other organs within your dog’s body.

The signs and symptoms of Rabies depend on the form that your dog is infected with as there are two types – Dumb and Furious. Both types will lead to massive personality changes in your dog. If for example your dog is quite aggressive without being infected – after infection he may become affectionate and want to be around humans. If however your dog is quite quiet before infection after he is infected he may become furious, savage and very unpredictable.

Other symptoms can include…

  • An inability to control the facial muscles with the facial expressions changing.
  • You may notice that your dog is salivating and drooling massively.
  • Alongside the salivating the jaw will be fixed (paralyzed) with the eyes staring in a fixed manner.
  • Dogs with rabies also shy away from bright lights.
  • Do NOT approach a dog if you fear it has Rabies – they are VERY dangerous.
  • Paralysis, coma and death will normally occur approximately 15 days after the first signs and symptoms of the disease have been exhibited.

Acquired Myasthenia Gravis – This nasty disease is classed as a Autoimmune condition (disease) – basically this means that the immune system actually turns on itself and starts attacking it’s own immune system. The cause of this disease is due to the neurons and interconnecting muscles being damaged – which will then lead to…

  • Muscle weakness
  • Tiredness after exercise
  • The muscles in the eyes may also be affected
  • The muscles in the face may become affected which will cause changes to your dog’s facial expressions.
  • You may also notice that there are some changes in your dogs voice.
  • Problems with the esophagus can also occur which will then lead to a difficulty in swallowing.

This is another of those canine neurological disorders that can be congenital and affect certain breeds including…

  1. Dachshunds (Miniature)
  2. Springer Spaniels (all types of this breed)
  3. Fox Terriers (smooth variety)
  4. Jack Russell.

Distemper – This is another particularly nasty disease. Distemper is actually a virus which can be transmitted from dog to dog normally by your dog inhaling particles which have been infected by the discharges from another dog that is carrying the disease. The incubation period for the disease is anywhere between 7-21 days.

The early signs and symptoms of Distemper will include some of the following…

  • A cough
  • High temperature
  • Tiredness and lethargy
  • Eyes that have become reddened
  • Loss of appetite
  • Runny nose
  • Your dog may also make a noise when he breaths
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Later symptoms (normally after a few weeks) of Distemper may include…

  • Nervous twitches
  • Fits
  • Paralysis
  • The pads of the nose may become thickened.

Dog Strokes – This is a problem that can cause quite severe behavioral changes in your dog. The symptoms of a stroke can also leave your dog with mobility problems too. There are two types of Strokes – one which is caused by hemorrhaging in the brain and the other which is caused by a blocked artery which blocks blood flow to the brain.

The major symptoms of a stroke in dogs can include the following…

  • Your dog may find it difficult to balance.
  • You may notice that your dog becomes more tired and seems lethargic.
  • Watch your dog when he eats – by supervising your dog closely you may notice that your dog eats out of one side of the bowl – this a common symptom of a stroke in dogs.
  • You may notice that your dog has difficulty seeing and may even become blind through having a stroke.
  • Try calling your dog – this is important – if you suspect your dog has had a stroke watch for his reaction when he is called. A symptom of suffering a stroke can sometimes lead to dog’s turning the wrong way when his name is called.
  • Watch how your dog holds his head – tilting of the head is another symptom of a stroke in dogs.
  • Of course sudden behavior changes should always be explored by the owner to make sure that they are not caused by an undiagnosed illness. Sudden changes in behavior is another symptom of your dog having suffered a stroke.

As we have previously mentioned please don’t use the information above regarding common and less common canine neurological disorders as a diagnostic tool. Please always get paid or free vet advice if you are at all concerned that your dog has any of the conditions on this page

The Bad Side of Inversion Therapy

People probably always think of back inversion table when they have back pain because this equipment is capable of relieving back and neck pain. It does give benefits, but as all things have advantages and disadvantages, a back inversion table is not good for some people.

Inversion tables are widely used in inversion therapies. This kind of therapy was first used over 2000 years ago and still popular until now. Inversion tables take a part in its popularity because nowadays, this equipment helps anyone to treat themselves at their own home.

The therapy gives several benefits, such as improving blood circulation, relieving spinal pressure, and increasing flexibility. To get all the advantages, what someone should do is attaching his or her body to the table and hung upside down. This therapy is considered good to improve health, but for people with certain illnesses, it can cause negative side effects.

Inversion therapy can increase eye and blood pressure, so that is why it is not recommended for some people with several conditions, such as pregnancy, heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, hernia, spinal injury, osteoporosis, ear infection, obesity, and stroke.

People with obesity often exceed the weight capacity of the tables, while actually each table has its own recommended maximum weight. During the session, those with middle ear infections can experience discomfort and disorientation. It can also cause pressure on the optic nerves because the flow of fluids that circulate in the eyes is blocked. Of course, it is not good for someone with glaucoma. Another bad effect is it may separate retina from the optic nerve, which is called retinal detachment.

After knowing those effects, it does not mean that healthy people can use the inversion table freely without considering some factors. If you are a beginner, it is good to start with a very slight angle. In this case, you can put your feet 12 inches or less above the head.

It will be good if you have somebody to assist you during the therapy. For the very first time, you may feel dizziness, and that is why you need an assistant that will watch over you. The most important thing above all is you should have a talk with a doctor before you begin the therapy or even before you decide to go stores to purchase the equipment. The doctor will tell you whether you are allowed to use it or not in order to prevent bad things happen to you. Health is considered the most precious thing in life. Staying healthy is not a difficult task if you know what to do and what is best for your body.

Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief – 3 Proven Ways For Sciatic Nerve Sleep Relief

Sleeping with sciatica is hard, almost impossible. Here we will look at proven sleeping positions for sciatica and how you can finally find sciatica treatment while you sleep.

1. On Back with Pillow under Knees – This position is good for sciatic pain relief in general. Whether you are simply laying down relaxing or are settling in to sleep, this position is an excellent sciatica treatment. Sciatica flares are usually due to muscle inflammation. When you are simply laying on your back, the angle of your legs can place pressure on your lower back muscles, causing them to become inflamed. Laying with a pillow under your knees takes the pressure off of your lower back, which means it also takes the pressure off of the lower back muscles.

2. On side with pillow between legs – This is a great position for sciatic nerve pain relief. Using a pillow between your legs keeps your posture stable. Good posture is crucial to any type of sciatica treatment. If your posture is not aligned, it places stress on the back. Although this stress may not even be noticed by people without sciatica, even a minor stress on the back can cause major sciatic pain for sciatica sufferers.

3. In a recliner with pillows under leg and on each side – If you are completely unable to find sciatic nerve pain relief using any of the other sleeping positions, try sleeping in a recliner. Not only will you have control over your posture, but you can also prop your sides with pillows to make sure that your body is completely stable. For most people, this is a last resort – after all, it is not as comfortable as a bed – but it does work.

No matter how you are searching for sciatic nerve pain relief, using these sleeping positions as a sciatica treatment for sleep relief should help. If all else fails, you may want to look into finding a good mattress for sciatic pain relief, or the best pillows to relieve sciatic nerve pain.

Symptoms Of Gladular Fever To Be Aware Of

Related to Epstein-Barr virus, glandular fever is a viral infection transmitted through either direct contact with an infected person’s saliva or through droplets of saliva in the air. The disease is most often spread through sneezing, coughing, kissing, and sharing cups or drinks.

The most common early symptoms include fatigue, a painful sore throat and swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck. To confirm the diagnosis of glandular fever, a doctor will do a throat swab and culture. Glandular fever, which is known in some regions as mononucleosis, or mono, is a common condition and, like all viruses, resists drugs and other medical treatments.

Perhaps more of a nuisance than a threat, one of hallmarks of glandular fever is that it takes a very long time for the virus to run its course. From the time a patient is first exposed to the virus until the symptoms begins is usually between 7 and fourteen days. The symptoms may last, in varying degrees, for 6 to 8 weeks, and a patient who tests positive for glandular fever can remain contagious for as long as 18 months.

One of the primary symptoms of the illness is fatigue. The body is so busy fighting the virus, which mutates to survive, that all of its resources go into that battle. It is vitally important that patients with glandular fever rest when they are tired. Engaging in strenuous activity during this time increases the chances of a rare but very serious complication.

In less than 1% of patients with glandular fever, the spleen ruptures. The spleen must then be removed immediately or the patient may bleed to death. The spleen is a small organ protected by the ribs on the left hand side of the body near the back. Returning to heavy lifting or contact sports may play a part in this very rare complication, so safest course of action is to rest fully during the recovery phase.

Another symptom that affects many glandular fever patients is a very painful sore throat. The tonsils may be covered with white film or spots that show the body’s own defense systems are trying to keep the infection under control. A doctor my prescribe anti0imflammatory steroids to reduce the swelling of the throat. This medication may also reduce swelling in the spleen or lungs.

One approach to soothing the raw sore throat that comes with glandular fever is to gargle with warm, not hot, salt water. Ideally, the rinse used should be slightly warmer than body temperature. The salt water gargle helps gently cleanse the tonsils and rehydrate the raw, damaged membranes in the throat and mouth.

Swollen lymph glands are another sign of glandular fever. These can be located just below the back part of the lower jaw. To determine if the glands are swollen, the patient should tilt his face toward the ceiling and run the flats of his fingers across his neck near the back of the lower jaw. The swollen lymph glands will be tender to the touch and very obvious. Smaller lymph glands in the scalp may also swell. As the illness subsides, so will the swollen glands.

Why Should We Maintain Good Lymph Circulations Against Toxins?

Lymphatic System in your body

The lymphatic system is a complex network of conduits and nodes that carry a fluid called lymph. Lymph is a clear to yellowish watery fluid which formed in between cells of the body. This watery fluid travels in the lymph channels, through various lymph glands and eventually drains into the bloodstream. It is formed when interstitial fluid (the fluid that bathes cells and tissues) enters the conduits of the lymphatic system. The interstitial fluid is in turn formed because of filtration of blood. This clear fluid contains white blood cells, known as lymphocytes, along with a small concentration of red blood cells and proteins. Because white blood cells are smaller than red blood cells, they can pass easily through membranes which red blood cells cannot penetrate. It circulates through body tissues picking up fats, bacteria, and other unwanted materials, removal of excess tissue fluid, filtering these substances out through the lymphatic system to produce immune cells such as lymphocytes (antibody producing plasma cells) and monocytes.

Lymph glands that are near each other often form into groups or chains such as the sides of the neck, the armpits, and the groins and many places in body. Lymph and lymph glands are major parts of the immune system. They contain white blood cells (lymphocytes) and antibodies that defend the body against infection. Damage or interruption to the lymphatic system can result in a range of medical conditions. Small lymph glands (sometimes called lymph nodes) occur throughout the body.

Check time bomb in your body

Lymph glands are normally pea-sized. You can sometimes feel some under the skin. Lymph glands under the skin become more noticeable and easier to feel if they swell. Swollen Lymphatic gland can swell to the size of marbles or even bigger. But, you cannot see or feel lymph glands deeper in the chest or abdomen even if they swell.

Causes of swollen lymph glands:

1. Infection – the most common

The lymph glands near to an infection swell quickly and become tender as the immune system ‘fights off’ infecting germs such as bacteria, virus, etc. The lymph glands usually go back to their normal ‘pea size’ when the infection is over. It can take a week or so for them to gradually go back to normal after the infection.

Common infected areas are:

– Throat infections and tonsillitis may cause lymph glands in the neck to swell.

– Skin infections of the arm may cause lymph glands in the armpit to swell.

– Infections of the leg or genitals may cause lymph glands in the groin to swell.

– Virus infections such as glandular fever affect the whole body. You may then develop swollen lymph glands in various parts of the body such as the neck, armpit and groins.

2. Cancers, lymphomas and leukemia – less common

A cancer can ‘seed’ (spread) to nearby lymph glands. The cancer then grows in the lymph gland and causes it to swell. For example:

– Breast cancer may seed to the lymph glands in the armpit.

– Throat cancer may seed to lymph glands in the neck.

– Lung cancer and gut cancer may seed to lymph glands that you usually cannot see or feel in the abdomen and chest.

– Cancer of the lymphatic and blood systems (lymphomas and leukemia) can cause many lymph glands to swell.

As a rule, swollen lymph glands develop slowly to become cancers, lymphomas and leukemia than those cause from infections. And they are painless at the beginning.

3. Other causes -rare

Reactions to certain drugs, glycogen storage diseases, Kawasaki disease, sarcoidosis and certain forms of arthritis.

Check your lymph glands

Swollen lymph glands due to virus infections are common. For example, lymph glands in the neck may go ‘up and down’ if you have frequent throat infections. This is of little concern. Swollen lymph glands are more of a concern if there is no apparent reason for them to swell. Consult your doctor if:

– You find swollen lymph glands and you do not know why they have swollen if you do not have an infection.

– Swollen lymph glands due to an infection do not go down again within two weeks.

Common Goldfish Diseases and Treatment

The common reasons goldfish get sick are if the fish tank is dirty, due to poor filtration, poor water quality and low oxygen levels. This article provide the information of the common goldfish diseases and how to treatment.

Ulcers

Caused by poor water quality or an excessively high pH level and bacterial infection. Also commonly affects newly imported goldfish.

Symptoms: Pinky-white open wounds, often with a white edge and sometimes secondarily infected by fungi and other bacteria.

Treatment: Fish lose salts quickly through open wounds, so add aquarium salt at a dose of 1-3g/litre. Use an antibiotic treatment both short-term antibiotic baths and topical antibiotic. If treatment fails you will consult a vet for advance treatment.

Dropsy

Dropsy is a symptom that the fish is in kidney failure and is not able to excrete enough fluid. Usually caused by bacterial infection. Viral infection, nutritional, metabolic and osmoregulatory problems can also be responsible.

Symptoms: Swelling of the body cavity due to a build-up of fluid. Scales become raised that make the fish look like a pine cone. One or both of the eyes may be protruded.

Treatment: Add aquarium salt at a dose of 1- 3g/litre can help to prevent salt loss. Use a broad spectrum antibiotic treatment is the best option in most cases. A good antibiotic is chloramphenicol and tetracycline.

White spot

Caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis parasite infection due to poor or incorrect water conditions, fluctuating temperature and general poor husbandry.

Symptoms: Small white spots on the skin, fins and gills.

Treatment: Treat promptly with an anti-parasite medication such as Metronidazole, malachite green and formalin. It may be necessary to raise the water temperature to 80° F to improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

Bacterial infection

Bacterial infection covers a range of goldfish illnesses, with varying causes. Dirty water and/or cold water, overcrowding and corn-based diets can lead to bacterial infection.

Symptoms: Red and inflamed areas on the body and fins, raised scales, skin ulcers, exophthalmos (pop-eye), dropsy or swollen abdomen, fin rot. Additionally, affected fish may be lethargic and anorexic.

Treatment: Use Short-term baths for a few hours each day using anti-bacterial products such as potassium permanganate or antibiotics. For open sores it is recommended to wash them in iodine or hydrogen peroxide solution and apply antibiotic ointment. Topical treatments can use in minor to moderate cases. Medicated food these are specially prepared foods containing antibiotics. You can prepare your own medicated food by top-dressing ordinary food with an appropriate antibiotic. Antibiotics (injectable) this usually course of five injections over a ten-day period in combination with topical treatments.

Swim bladder disorder

Caused by bacterial infection, incorrect diet, trapped gas, physical deformities, poor water quality. Genetic problems in selectively-bred goldfish. Commonly affects egg-shaped fancy goldfish.

Symptoms: Fish have difficulty swimming to the surface, or to the lower levels of the tank.

Treatment: Change diet and improve water conditions by soaking flake food before feeding so that it will sink lower in the water so the goldfish will not intake as much air and the food will be moister and easily digestible. An increase of vegetable content in the goldfish’s diet may also help their digestive system. Increasing the tank water temperature to 78-80°F and add aquarium salts dose of 1- 3g/litre to the water. If the goldfish condition is not improve a medicated food, or broad spectrum antibiotic can be given.

Type 2 Diabetes – How Diabetes Can Make You Age Faster!

Unfortunately, we all age, but as some say: “it’s better than the alternative”! Some of us age faster and show the signs of it much more prominently than others. But one more particularly unappealing thought is that certain medical conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, can actually cause you to age faster.

One of the major factors that causes us to age prematurely is stress. It creates stress lines on your face, bags under your eyes, hair loss, loss of sleep, affects your appetite and puts an unnecessary strain on your heart. It is also not good for people dealing with diabetes; even receiving a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes brings stress to both your mind and your body. And not just the diagnosis, the vigilance and discipline diabetes control demands is stressful with a capital “S”.

When your blood sugar level is off, your body beings to suffer from stress.

Your:

  • heart rate quickens,
  • your body begins to perspire,
  • breathing becomes labored,
  • trembling sets in,
  • your brain becomes foggy,
  • and more.

All of these factors are not good for your body. Anytime you put your body through this unnecessary stress, it can cause it to age faster than it need to.

Take a look at people who are in jobs with extremely high levels of stress: police officers, air traffic controllers, commodity traders, etc., and many times, you’ll see someone who looks older than their true age. These are people who usually don’t have major medical issues except those that are stress-related. Imagine how adding stress triggers for diabetes would additionally affect them.

Another way to avoid aging from stress is to ensure your body gets what it needs. This means everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to drinking plenty of water… and rest. Processed foods are not included here. All of the additives and preservatives in these foods actually ages you more.

Ironically, too much sugar in your body is not only bad for diabetes control, but for aging as well. Prolonged periods of elevated blood sugar levels:

  • attack nerves,
  • affects the elasticity of your skin,
  • clouds your brain’s thinking ability,
  • decreases blood flow to your extremities, and
  • causes your kidneys, among other organs, to work overtime.

All are classic symptoms of aging.

Exercise is an excellent way to slow the aging effects of diabetes. It allows you to retain more muscle mass, burn more calories, limit fat storage and gives you more energy. Plus, bone density is not affected nearly as much as it would be if you have a sedentary lifestyle.

Even though we all age, there’s no reason to rush the process. Keeping your blood sugar and body weight within normal limits is naturally the way for people with Type 2 diabetes to handle their disease, even reverse it. But it also goes a long ways in slowing down your body’s aging clock too.

What The Death Of Elvis Presley Teaches Us About Obesity

Life is a classroom where we should all observe and learn and become better people. There is no better way to learn than learning from the practical experience of others.

Elvis Presley is a legend. A great singer who blazed many trails. However the cause of his death is still not conclusively known. Was it the drugs he was taking? Or his massive intake of food that finally killed him? The situation is further complicated by the fact that it is believed that he was taking some of the drugs to try and control his weight.

Did Elvis Presley’s Diet Kill Him?

We all need a minimum of 1,500 to 1,800 calories daily to stay alive. People doing heavy work and therefore burning lots of calories need even more calories, up to about 10,000 per day.

Elvis was consuming over 85,000 calories per day and was sitting around doing nothing more strenuous than reaching forward to flip the channels on his TV set. 85,000 calories is more than enough to keep an elephant alive. Presley’s favorite daily diet was a 30-cm long bread roll stuffed with bacon, peanut butter and strawberry jam. Each one had about 42,000 calories. Elvis would eat two every day together with other snacks like hamburgers and deep-fried white bread.

The answer to our question is, yes, Elvis who conquered the fickle and fiercely competitive music industry was no match to the alluring aroma and taste of food. He just ate himself to death.

Why Do Most Celebrities Have A Weight Problem?

The Elvis era ushered in a new era of super-rich celebrities. The new medium of TV helped create a new breed of super-rich entertainers. Elvis with his good looks and suggestive dancing was especially suited to it. Ever since two problems have been constantly and regularly associated with super-rich celebrities. Drugs and weight problems. For the purposes of this article, we will concentrate on weight problems.

It is useful to note that many of these big stars were literally starving and hard-up for cash just before their big break to celebrity status. Just like Elvis.

Suddenly they find themselves in a situation where they do not have to worry about money. Situations where they don’t have to retain a nine to five job to put food on the table. That’s where all the trouble seems to start.

Most of us seem to end up in a similar situation when we get comfortable jobs that we enjoy. A mildly successful junior executive or entrepreneur is bound to have a problem with obesity, no wonder it’s a national crisis.

What We Can Learn From Elvis

It is clear that had Elvis exercised, even a little, he would have lived much longer. Had he lived in this information age, he would also have had numerous other “less painful” ways of controlling his weight.

But the real danger zone, if we are to learn anything from Elvis, is in the mind. Presley had reached a situation where there was nothing left to achieve. There was no new challenge, even in the horizon, which interested him. That was the really dangerous point and that’s the really deadly place for anybody to be in. It happens to many celebrities these days with devastating consequences.

The lesson is that however successful you become, you need a constant supply of new challenges and new ventures and formidable tasks to take up all the time. It seems that it is true that when the mind goes to sleep, the body follows suite with devastating consequences.

Eczema Skin – How to Stop Scratching the Itchy Rash

One common characteristic of people with eczema skin is that the red inflammation, bumps and patches are very itchy. Scratching an itch seems instinctive and we do this often unconsciously when we have mosquito bites and dry skin. When there is an eczema dermatitis problem, alternatives to scratching are very important. This is especially something necessary for working with children suffering from this skin condition. A child’s impulse control is much weaker than an adult’s and children often pick at scabs, peel dry skin and are fascinated with any imperfection. If you are using a cortisone cream, apply this at a different time of the day than the moisturizer.

The first line of defense for itchy eczema eruptions is to be sure that during tough times an antihistamine is taken. At night, this will allow for sleep and help the body keep up it’s immune system. If you or your child has an allergic reaction causing the rash and patches it is important to strengthen your immune system. During the day there are milder antihistamines that won’t cause drowsiness which can be taken and are useful for the steadiness and focus needed for work and school.

Moisturizing with coconut oil, aquaphor, olive oil and other emollients is important to treat dermatitis. Be sure to put this on after a bath or shower before the skin has a chance to dry out. Hot water can dry the skin so take care the water you use is warm instead. Oatmeal baths are gentle on the skin and will also give a few hours of itch relief. There are products on the market with oatmeal or you can design your own using rolled oats. Avoid using anything abrasive on the skin and after the shower or bath put on cotton clothing. Wool and other fabrics can be scratchy and irritate raised skin problems.

Practice slow breathing taking ten to fifteen seconds to inhale. Hold or suspend the breath for ten seconds and then slowly exhale for ten to fifteen seconds. This has a calming effect on the mind and helps cultivate clarity. You can teach this to your child if your child has a problem with atopic eczema or another form of dermatitis.

Cold compresses can be used throughout the day. Coolness feels good on the skin and will help to relieve the reaction response. Avoid too much sun and keep a food journal of ingredients that may be causing an allergic reaction. Taking these steps will help the eczema skin heal, avoid a bacterial infection due to scratching and allow the body to heal.

Why is My Itchy Vagina Also Sore? – Reasons For Painful Vaginal Itching Infections

There is nothing more embarrassing than having an itch on the vagina when out socializing. It’s funny if you think about it, if an itch is on the end of your nose, your head or ear you scratch it regardless of who stands before you, but when it’s round the crotch/anus then the way we get relief is not so openly done. Could this have something to do with why the genitals are called the privates, hence the secrecy between fingers meeting up with the itchy vagina? Okay it doesn’t look nice to scrawb at your bits when in the company of people, but an itch is an itch and made for scratching. And another thing is, what must people think for why you scratch i.e. pubic lice (crabs) or maybe VD might even cross their mind. Now you can always retreat around the corner out of sight to scratch, or find the root cause for your itchy vagina and cure it. There are many reasons accountable for a vaginal itch or anus one. If you itch because you have a vaginal rash then this is easily treated and rid using home treatments, however and more often than not an itchy vagina comes about from vaginal infections.

One infection strongly connected for causing an itch is vaginal thrush. As with specific infections they can also affect the vaginal opening and surrounding skin along with pain. Bear in mind that not all women get the symptoms associated with infection but if they do, the way they cope and respond to vaginal treatments can differ greatly. There are 3 common infections we address on a regular basis and the reason why is, because it is normally one of them that is responsible for a vaginal itch.

If you experience vulval discomfort then we look towards the thrush infection, bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas vaginalis and herpes simplex.

Thrush

Thrush as we are aware is caused by a fungal organism called Candida albicans which lives in our bodies. Candida albicans grow and mass around the genitals which bring on thrush symptoms. Clarified symptoms are a white, thick, yeasty smelling vaginal discharge, and a very itchy sore and red vulval region. Sometimes the rectum (anal) opening can also become painfully itchy. Most Vaginal infections excluding some STDs are treated with antifungal drugs, vaginal creams, and vaginal pessaries. Creams and pessaries which need inserting inside the vagina can however cause burning and skin irritation similar to the thrush infection. Because of this confusion comes to the fore over whether it ‘s the side effects of the treatment or the symptoms of the infection. Although vaginal treatments are deemed safe – particular feminine products have to be ideal for you and the infection you suffer from. If vulval skin is itchy and sore then cream can help with easing discomfort. Some medications come in oral form. Personal preference will prevail for whatever treatment you use, however if it is not a 100% for clearing your infection then it is waste of time and money leaving you still infected. Temporary cures are not want you want you want rid and gone forever. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding consult with GP before using vaginal treatments.

Treatment for thrush can be obtained from the pharmacy but talk to the pharmacist before purchase because; it is possible to mis-use treatments for vaginal itching/soreness that are not thrush. Wrong treatments may lead to long-standing vulval problems and can worsen the condition you set out to heal.

Don’t let anyone tell you any different that after being diagnosed with thrush that you have been sexually active. Thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection. Thrush does not always cause symptoms in men and may present as balanitis or a non-specific urethritis (NSU.)

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis also like thrush bringing soreness, burning and itching of the vulva but hardly ever sees redness or swelling. We associate the unpleasant fishy smell with bacterial Vaginosis and a smelly grey or white vaginal discharge. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) happens when the good bacteria in the vagina are removed to make way for bad bacteria. So it is bad bacteria we look to treat and destroy to ease soreness, relieve itching and rid the fishy smell. Because of similar symptoms it is easy to think you have thrush when you have BV. Bacterial Vaginosis is the more severe out of the two infections because it can lead to internal infection called pelvic inflammatory disease.

Trichomonas Vaginalis

Have you been diagnosed with having Trichomonas Vaginalis but at the time of diagnosis did not hear clearly or understand what the GP had to say. This happens regular where a woman might have been frightened by the medical term used for her condition and goes home none the wiser. Well Trichomoniasis or Trich as it is called at times is a vaginal infection which causes vulva soreness, reddening and inflammation. A common symptom of Trich is a foamy, yellow greenish vaginal discharge. Some women feel pain when weeing. The organism responsible for the symptoms is a parasite in the vaginal mucus. It spreads through penetrative vaginal sex and the exchange of vaginal fluid, meaning, sharing sex toys or sex gadgets.

Herpes Simplex is a viral infection

This virus exists in two types. Herpes simplex type 1 appears as cold sores around the mouth, and herpes simplex type 2 involves the genitals. When the infection first takes hold, painful sores show on the vulva and vagina. It may hurt to urinate as urine is acidic and stings if it comes in contact with herpes sores. Other symptoms include a tingly and itchy vagina, swollen glands in the groin and general flu-like symptoms. Swollen glands or flu-like symptoms only happen during the first attack.

As with particular viral infections, there is no permanent way of ridding herpes and its recurrence.

Now we have covered vaginal infections let us focus on the vaginal rash and how to treat it. This should not take long as it is just simply water that will do the trick. There are solutions for soothing but just keeping the vagina fresh airy and dry will speed up the recovery process making this the best solution.

Nail Psoriasis Treatment, Is There Hope?

Did you know, most psoriatic nail disease affects patients with other symptoms of psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis occurs in less than 5% of patients with none of the other symptoms that you usually find in psoriasis sufferers. We will discuss the cause, symptoms, as well as nail psoriasis treatment in this publication.

Nail psoriasis affects about 50-80% of people with active psoriasis. Nail psoriasis is a term used when there are changes in fingernails, toenails, or both caused by psoriasis disease. Approximately half of nail psoriasis sufferers have to discontinue their regular daily schedules because of the pain.

Finger or toe nail changes can occur in one or more nails and can have different levels of damage. You can have damage in the nail itself, the bed or matrix (where it starts). Damage can include; pitting or even losing the nail from the tip down. If you have the pustular type of psoriasis you can lose the nail completely.

These are some of the changes that may occur:

  • ‘Ice Pick’ (pitting or deformity of the nail): This is caused by growth deficiency in the nail bed caused by psoriasis.
  • ‘Salmon Patch’ (Yellow or yellowing-red discoloration of the nail): This is caused by psoriasis in the nail bed. It is also sometimes called “oil drop”‘ because it looks like a drop of oil that is soaking into the nail.
  • ‘Onycholysis’: Occurring after the oil drop. A white area appears when the nail actually separates from the nail bed.
  • Lastly, total loss of the nail. It crumbles and eventually just falls away because psoriasis has weakened the matrix.

Psoriasis of the finger and toenails can resemble other conditions such as chronic fungal infections or inflammation in the nail bed.

What Causes Nail Psoriasis:

Unfortunately 50-80% of psoriasis sufferers will get nail psoriasis. This is often associated with psoriatic arthritis when it is located in your fingers and toes. Even if you don’t have the symptoms of arthritis you can still get nail psoriasis, and it can still be embarrassing, because your hands and feet look terrible. Trust me, I know.

As you might already know from reading my other publications, preventative maintenance is the only real way to take care of and prevent all of the terrible symptoms and debilitating aspects of psoriasis.

Remember this not a skin disease it is an autoimmune disease and you have to cure it from the inside out. Wouldn’t we all like to have our whole body, psoriasis free, for life?

Does Vinegar Cause Yeast Infections Or Cure Them?

As medical researcher and former yeast infection sufferer I am often asked about the connection between vinegar and yeast infections. Most experts agree that eating certain foods encourage the growth of yeast and increase the chance of an infection. But what about vinegar? Vinegar has been proven to improve the health of many people. So, does vinegar cause yeast infections or cure them?

Yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida. Candida lives in small amounts inside everyone’s body. In small amounts it is beneficial to the body and certainly not dangerous. Candida becomes a threat to the body when it grows out of control in the digestive system and then enters the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream it circulates throughout the body attacking wherever it finds an opportunity.

Certain foods can create an environment within the body that encourages the yeast to grow. White sugar, refined white rice and flour, and some highly processed foods encourage Candida growth and damage the body’s ability to fight off the infection.

The pH level of the body also affects the growth of Candida yeast. The pH level, which stands for “potential hydrogen” is a measurement of the amount of acid in the body. The scales runs from 0 (high acid) to 14 (low acid). The pH level of human blood should be between 7.35 and 7.45. Pure water has a pH of 7 which is considered to be neutral. Even a small change in the pH level can have a significant effect on our health.

The higher the acid level the easier it is for yeast to grow. Anyone who suffers from yeast infections should everything possible to maintain their body’s pH level at the lowest healthy point possible.

Several factors that contribute to high pH levels are:

1. High stress level

2. Lack of exercise

3. Excess fat in diet

4. Excess consumption of dairy products

5. Not enough fresh vegetables and fruits in diet

White vinegar is extremely acidic with a typical pH level between 2.4 and 3.4. This extremely high acid level makes an idea environment for Candida yeast to grow out of control. White vinegar should be eliminated from the diet of anyone who has a yeast infection or is prone to getting them. Most other types of vinegar including balsamic, red wine, and rice vinegar are also highly acidic.

The only exception to the rule is apple cider vinegar which has a pH of 7.5. Often sold at health food stores, organic apple cider vinegar that is unfiltered and unpasteurized can actually lower the acid level of the body. Many researchers believe that a teaspoon or two each day will help to prevent yeast infections as well as improving overall health.

The answer to the question, “does vinegar cause yeast infections?” is yes and no. White, balsamic, red wine, and rice vinegar will definitely cause yeast infections. Natural organic apple cider vinegar will not. This is an example of how important it is to only trust a knowledgeable and respected source such as YeastFreeLife.com for your natural health information.
