Type 2 Diabetes – Personality Traits and Blood Sugar Levels!

The mind and body connection is very powerful. It has been found people who have good emotional health have healthy relationships as well as a healthy body. There is no doubt our mind and body have an important connection.

Researchers in the Clinical Epidemiology Unit of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, decided to look at how personality characteristics are associated with blood sugar levels.

This particular study was published in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practicein October 2011, and looked at the various personality traits in 2152 men and 3143 women between 43 and 66 years of age. Testing discovered 316 of the men and 213 of the women were prediabetic or diabetic…

  • it was found that men with low antagonism, or high agreeableness, had a lower risk of having diabetes or prediabetes than those with high antagonism.
  • among both men and women, the lowest risk of prediabetes and diabetes was found among those with a high capacity for feeling pleasure: who had strong feelings of happiness, and had learned to be aware of their feelings.

It has been found diabetics have a high rate of depression. Perhaps a low ability for feeling pleasure and a high degree of anger contribute to the development of Type 2 diabetes. Blood chemistry can change when people become angry or depressed, increasing the blood sugar level to help the body prepare for “fight or flight”.

Everyone feels sad now and then. When sadness goes on for months and people lose interest in things that used to make them happy, often with changes in sleep and eating patterns; then talking things over with a professional can be helpful. Sometimes just talking things out is all that is needed.

Psychotherapy aims to build up coping strategies for dealing with problems without becoming depressed.

  • cognitive, or behavioral, therapy uses coping strategies such as keeping a notebook to find depressive triggers and organize a search for solutions. Patients are sometimes given assignments to plan ahead for stressful situations. Interpersonal therapy explores relationships and how they affect patients’ emotions. Groups of patients can use each other as sounding boards.
  • psychodynamic therapy attempts to get to the roots of depression and deal with its causes.

Medications can be used to restore normal brain chemistry if an imbalance is diagnosed. The selective serotonin uptake inhibitors are good for improving levels of serotonin, a molecule that helps brain cells communicate with one another.

Exercising regularly and moderately can have numerous positive benefits for depression. Going for a walk can help the brain to build up endorphins, which can elevate your mood. Walking or running to the point of increasing both your heart rate and breathing not only crowds out thoughts of depression, but is excellent for the heart and helps your body to control blood sugar levels.

Treating depression needs no excuse other than to get rid of depression, but if it can help to prevent Type 2 diabetes and all its complications, it can help make for good physical health as well.

Are Overweight People Lazy?

Are You overweight? Believe it or not, when you were born, your parents did not get to choose your size. Your parents didn’t get to choose your sex, hair color or any other physical characteristic that makes you ….you. They didn’t choose your weight either, or your bone structure. They just couldn’t take over that job; it was hard enough bringing you into the world.

Being overweight seems to be a pre-determined fate for so many Americans. An estimated 64% of Americans are considered overweight. That equates to over 125 million people that are overweight and need to loose weight. Or you can call a spade a spade, which equates to over 125 million FAT Americans, which also means that there are a lot of very unattractive Americans.

Supposedly having too much body weight has been the result of you being lazy, unhealthy, unhappy, selfish, greedy, and unattractive. NO, it hasn’t been the result of any of those reasons! Overweight Americans are often some of the most tenacious career-conscious individuals. They are overworked and often fall into weight problems because they are working long hours, without enough rest and exercise! Approximately ½ of the other 36% of thinner adults choose to condemn those Americans who aren’t as fortunate to have a fast metabolism and the luxury of time to exercise. These very adults have the time, because they also find the time to ridicule the other 64% of the population that need to lose a few pounds.

This all may sound a bit harsh, but suck it up! The slogan ‘Thin is in and Fat is Out’ needs to go right back out the door with the aerobics instructor that brought it in. Sure, if you have a weight problem, you know you have a weight problem. It is not something you don’t have the intelligence to see. See Barbie, while you were on the beach with Ken, the fat chics were getting an education! Being overweight is still considered one of the biggest sins someone can do to their own bodies , but what about the people out there with true medical problems that prevent them from being thin.? They still fall into the thin person’s stereotype of a FAT LAZY person? The sad truth is that people who are exceptionally overweight allow others to ridicule them about their weight. The misconceptions that people who are overweight won’t work, are overall lazy people, unhappy, unattractive is a load of bull.

Just take a look around you; Some of the most beautiful women in the world are either overweight now or have been at some time in their life. LOOK AT OPRAH! She is gorgeous, but she wasn’t always the size she is now, but she was still a pretty happy woman, not to mention a huge success. If you look in the “heftier women magazines” you will find more beautiful women than what you find on the runways of New York, it’s a fact.

Whether we want to hear it or not, the fact is that “grown-ups” still act like children to get ahead in life. It really is the “take the camera off of me and point it over there at someone else” approach. Think of your girlfriends. You likely have one in the bunch that is as cute and prissy as can be, but whenever she isn’t getting the attention from the opposite sex, she will inevitably draw attention to your weight. Don’t pay it a second thought and here’s why. Even though you could get into a dirt throwing contest and bring out all of her faults, (for example that she really wears a lot of make-up because she needs it!) there’s no point because it really doesn’t matter. So you might be overweight, big deal, you are a beautiful person inside and out. Can anyone thin top that?

Dog Hot Spots and Skin Rashes

Your pet can not tell you that an area is irritated and itchy. A hot spot is a skin rash. It can be a small red irritated sore or an open oozing wound. Most dog owners do not realize their pet is struggling with a skin problem till it becomes a major issue. Don’t wait for excessive licking, itching or a sore spot to begin. You can stop skin issues in their tracks if you simply check your dog over once a week looking for anything different. Learn how to do the once a week pet scan and how to prevent problems.

Is your dog casually scratching an area or is your dog aggressively scratching a certain spot like something is biting them? Is it to the point your canine can’t stop licking or itching a specific area? If your dog is going after the same spot in a similar fashion that you would try to swat biting mosquitoes, then that spot could become a hot spot. A hot spot is an irritated area that bacteria, fleas or mites have set up camp. It is an itchy patch that makes your canine uncomfortable. It can become an open sore.

A skin irritation can start from a collar or harness rubbing. Look for burrs and other debris that became trapped or entangled that caused the skin irritation. Dog jackets can trap dirt and help bacteria grow, wash them as needed.

If your dog’s hair becomes matted it becomes a perfect place to hold moisture and harbor bacteria. Keep your pet free of mats by keeping the coat short or keep up with the required grooming for your pet’s breed.

Over bathing with harsh shampoos dries out the natural oils and can cause skin issues. Have you ever had itchy skin due to hard water? Most dog shampoos are to be used only once a month. Use dove or ivory bar soap followed by any conditioner if you want or need to bath your dog more than once a month. Why use bar soap instead of liquid soap? Dove and Ivory bar soaps do not have sodium lauryl sulfate (garage floor degreaser) in the ingredients list.

The healthier your dog is the less likely it is to have issues. Hot spots can be a sign of a diet that is high in sugar, foods with fillers (corn or soy), preservatives (msg) and foods that cause allergies (wheat). Hot spots can be a reaction to a vaccine. It can also be a reaction to parasites, fleas and mites. What a hot spot is telling you is that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. You need to investigate to solve the real issue. Find the source to correct the problem.

First learn to read the ingredients of all the products you use and to identify the good from the bad. If you don’t know what an ingredient is you can put it in the search bar of your browser and the internet will tell you what it is. Try not to overwhelm your dog’s immune system by giving many different types of drugs/vaccines all at once. Give vaccines, topical flea and tick repellants, and heartworm in stages not all the same day. Let your dog’s body recover from one type of chemical for at least 3 days before adding another drug.

If you discover a hot spot, cut the hair away from the area. You want to expose the sore to air. Gently clean the spot with weak solution of hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. To make a 3% H2O2, mix 1 oz. of hydrogen peroxide to 11 oz. distilled water (preferably) or filtered water and store it in refrigerator after each use. Most vets would recommend using a medicated shampoo. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil to relieve itching and to heal. The tea tree oil is not poisonous. Your dog can not lick the medication if it’s wearing a cone. There are many other natural products available to use. You may treat with a topical analgesic if the case is mild.

Topical pain-relieving drugs are applied to the affected area as a cream, ointment, gel, or spray. They help reduce inflammation below the skin surface and alleviate nerve pain that makes your canine want to itch. They can be purchased as over-the-counter while other stronger forms are available with a vet’s prescription. Treat the area with prednisone if the hot spot is severe.

If the source of the hot spot is fleas or mites you will need to use a dip, wash all the bedding, toys or flea bomb your home and repeat the process in 2 weeks to stop the cycle.

Ask yourself the following questions to discover the under lying causes that created the hot spot. When did the problem start? How long has it been going on? Was the problem after receiving vaccinations? Did it occur after surgery? Did it show up after going to the groomers, vet office or boarding kennel? Does your pet have fleas, mites or other parasites? If you can’t find the source it is usually mites. Is it a weak immune system due to a poor grade diet or too many low quality treats? Has the licking and scratching gone on for a great length of time and now become a habit?

Learn more about how to heal with Eastern Medicine, it shows you how to correct your dog’s body naturally. Choose drugs to get the problem under control if the natural remedies do not show sign of improvement in a day or two. Then give your dog’s body what it needs to stay healthy.

How to Get Rid of a Cold Sore? Try Green Tea

If you are one of the many people who suffer from repeat cold sore outbreaks, you may be wondering how can I get rid of a cold sore? Cold sores are caused by the HSV-1 virus. Once your body becomes infected with this virus, it remains dormant in your body. Therefore, you can have outbreaks of cold sores throughout your lifetime. While there is no known cure for cold sore outbreaks, there are some promising treatments that just might work for you. Let’s take a look at some of the remedies you can use when trying to get rid of a cold sore. Green tea is the first remedy we will look at.

Green tea is known to have many benefits, and for the cold sore sufferer, it can be a lifesaver. Many people who use green tea in the treatment of their cold sores report great results. Tea can be used in two different ways in the treatment process. First, at the initial sign of an outbreak, during the tingling phase, you will want to grab your green tea bags. Throughout the day, preferably about once an hour, wet the tea bag with warm water and hold it to the area where the tingling is occurring. This will help to reduce the duration of your cold sore.

After the sore has ruptured you will want to boil some water and brew your green tea. Drink several cups every day. Green tea has the amazing properties of catechins and quercetin, which are known anti-viral properties. By drinking plenty of the tea you can work to boost your immune system, which in turn helps to aid your body to a speedy recovery. There are of course many other options if you are looking to get rid of a cold sore. Let’s take a look at these other remedies.

Using Ice or Aloe during the tingling stage can often boast the same benefits as a green tea bag. After the sores have appeared you can also try using lemon balm, tea tree oil, or witch hazel on the sore. These have also been known to shorten the duration of the outbreak. You may also want to try taking immune-boosting supplements. These include, astragulus, l-lysine, B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc. All of these supplements work to strengthen your immune system.

As you have just learned using green tea is a great way to help get rid of a cold sore. Of course if green tea is not your cup of tea, there are other remedies that you can also try. You may even find that trying it in combination with some of the other remedies will produce optimum results.

Psoriasis Free for Life by Katy Wilson – The Truth Behind This PDF Ebook Download

If you deal with psoriasis then it might be useful to know the name Katy Wilson. She’s the author of a digital download book called Psoriasis Free for Life. This book was released in 2009 because she too suffered from psoriasis, and she knows just how embarrassing it can be.

She really relates to the painful itchy plaques that we all suffer from. She remembers just how hard the summer months are for us when we have to hide our skin under hot clothing. Just like me Katy Wilson went to doctor after doctor and all of them said the same thing. “There is no cure for psoriasis.” This is what pushed her into finding a new approach and creating Psoriasis free for life.

You know what its like to get those smelly creams than never really work 100% of the time, or getting allergy medicine that does nothing but stop the itchiness for a while. All of this led Wilson to get to work, where she spent countless hours in the library reading about holistic approaches to all sorts of ailments. She admits that some of the things she experimented with were downright crazy but after a while she began to weed out what didn’t work and only kept the ones that did.

This book outlines the step by step ways to take action and finally get rid of psoriasis for good. Now this process will not happen overnight, but if you stick with it you are guaranteed to see long lasting results.

Natural and Effective Ringworm Treatments

Getting a ringworm sounds a lot worse than it actually is, and can be cured fairly easily. Ringworm- which, by the way, isn’t actually a worm, it’s a fungus- is generally spread by contacts with pets or animals that have been infected. It is most common among children because they run around passing it to one another like a game of tag, but adults can get it too. It’s highly contagious so the first thing to do would be to limit the ringworm exposure. If you have pets, they should be quarantined to prevent further infection.

Ringworm treatments

Ringworm treatments range from the topical to the oral and can be expensive, not to mention the many possible side effects. However, this article won’t point you to creams and antibiotics. Nappyhead prefers a natural, alternative approach to ringworm treatments. So here are a few helpful hints to get rid of ringworm.

Ringworm of the scalp is sometimes more difficult to cure than other areas, but shea butter soap has been found to be helpful in most cases. Also an herbal tea made from goldenseal root can be used topically to clear up the infection. Moisten the affected area with a solution consisting of one teaspoon of goldenseal, steeped in a pint of boiling water. Allow it to cool to room temperature then apply. Goldenseal root is a popular fungus-fighting herb used for detoxification.

Tea Tree Oil is most frequently recommended for the treatment of fungus infections like athletes foot, candida treatment, and ringworm treatments. Tea tree oil can be used undiluted on the skin, but in sensitive cases, some may wish to dilute it with a carrier oil such as Jojoba oil (12 drops of tea tree oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil).

Oil of Oregano contains compounds that inhibit the growth of fungi, worms, and other organisms. It is an excellent anti-fungal and anti-microbial agent making it another option for ringworm treatments.

Don’t feed the ringworm!

Fungi thrive in an acidic environment so naturally you should combat this by making your body as alkaline as possible. This would mean eliminating or minimizing sugar, milk and dairy products in the diet to supplement the ringworm treatment. By cutting back on acidic products in the diet you are starving the fungus. If it can’t feed, it can’t live. In addition to an alkaline diet, consider probiotic enzymes with acidophilus to build up the good bacteria that will help fight the fungus.

To recap, an effective all-natural ringworm treatment would include:

*Avoiding antibiotics. They kill the friendly bacteria that the body needs to keep everything in check.

*Modifying the diet to eliminate acidic, fungus-loving foods (milk, dairy, sugar)

*Cleanse the affected area with anti-fungal oils and herbs

*Using digestive enzyme supplements and probiotic enzymes with acidophilus to promote healthy intestinal flora

There is always a natural treatment for disease if you are willing to do a little research and exploration. Why should finding an alternative ringworm treatment be any different? Be well…and ringworm-free.

Allergies Or Bedbug Bite? – How to Tell the Difference

A common complaint of travelers who have allergies, relates to the question of why they are experiencing reactions after spending a week away or returning home. A traveler may not suffer from, what they think , is an allergic reaction while on the trip, but in a few days,or as many as ten days, after returning home, present with a welt or lesion.

Studies show that reactions to bedbug bites increase as exposure is increased. A person’s first time being bitten may not cause immediate reactions, but can take up to ten days to present as a skin reaction. Repeat exposure to bedbug bites can increase the reaction time from ten days to mere seconds. This is important in determining, if, and when you have been bitten by bedbugs, whether you think it was at the hotel you stayed at, or your home, and if you are seeking compensation or considering litigation.

Bedbug bites are commonly mistaken for a variety of skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and scabies.

How can you tell the difference between an allergic reaction, like seasonal allergies or dust mite allergies, and a bedbug bite? People with a hypersensitivity to insect bites, and a bedbug is an insect, who are bitten by bedbugs, typically present with symmetrical lesions on their face, neck, arms or legs. Particularly characteristic of bedbug bites are the patterns or groupings of the lesions, which are similar to flea bites. These patterns of bites are usually either linear or triangular in shape and each bite will resemble a bull’s-eye, which is typical for insect-bite reactions.

An estimated 80% of the population are sensitive to bedbug bites. In one clinical trial, 18 of 19 persons showed skin reactions after bedbug exposure, mostly, only after, repeated exposure.

While it is generally thought that bedbugs do not transmit disease, and there is no proof that they are capable of disease transmission, conversely, there is no proof that they are not capable of transmission. The concern with bedbug bites is associated with the intense itching caused by the bites. The itching usually leads to scratching which, if severe enough, can cause breaks in the skin, scratches or excoriations, which can become infected. Scarring and/or changes in skin pigmentation, particularly in dark skinned people, can occur.

It is important to note that although most insect bites that cause lesions or eruptions on the skin, called papular urticaria, bee and wasp stings are painful, mosquitos do not bite in clusters as with bedbugs or fleas. Bedbug bites usually affect hypersensitive people, which may explain why one person , after being bitten, exhibits lesions and itching, while a bedmate might not experience any discomfort.

Bedbug exposure while traveling has become a more common occurrence in the past few years. The causes of of more frequent infestations run from the banning of pesticides like DDT, to the theory that bedbug infestations are cyclical in nature, occurring when factors favor bedbugs. Whatever the cause, there is no doubt that being bitten can ruin a vacation. While home infestations are difficult to predict and even more difficult to eradicate, travel related exposure can easily be prevented.

Wherever you plan to sleep make sure you thoroughly check the bed and surrounding area for bedbugs hiding in cracks and crevices, Be sure to notice any reddish brown stains or spots on sheets or mattresses, this is an indicator of bedbugs. Many travel-related products containing pesticides are available but this course of action is heavy handed and most likely unhealthy. Barrier methods, like an Allersac travel sheet can be a very effective tool in mitigating exposure but cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness as they don’t encase the head. With proper inspection and an Allersac, the incidence of bedbug bites, while traveling, can be lessened.

Rebound Headaches: When Getting Better Makes You Worse

Rebound headaches are caused by the very things that relieve headaches — pain medication. So basically it becomes a choice of suffer now, or suffer later.

Rebound headaches are usually daily occurrences, beginning early in the morning. Rebound headaches can lead to other problems including anxiety, depression, irritability and sleeplessness.

Migraine medications work to raise serotonin levels to ease pain. However, when too much medication is ingested something happens to the serotonin levels, which causes the chemical to lose its effectiveness. Research has shown that serotonin levels are lower when you take too much pain medication and then they rise slightly after the headaches gets better and you stop taking the medication.

If prescription or over-the-counter drugs are taken too often or in greater amounts than recommended, this can lead to rebound headaches. In addition to sedatives and tranquilizers, other rebound-causing medications include:

1. Caffeine-containing analgesics (Anacin, Excedrin, etc.). Caffeine, a primary ingredient in many headache medicines, can relieve migraine pain temporarily. However, taking medicine containing caffeine every day — as well as drinking caffeine-loaded beverages such as coffee or soft drinks — can lead to more frequent and severe headaches. If the headache gets worse when you stop using caffeine, the caffeine may be the cause of some of your headaches.

2. Butalbital compounds (Fioricet, Fiorinal, Phrenilin, etc.); Isometheptene compounds (Duradrin, Midrin, etc.); Decongestants (Afrin, Dristan, Sudafed, Tylenol Sinus, etc.); Ergotamines (D.II.E. 45, Ergomar, Migranal, Wigraine); Triptans (Amerge, Axert, Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig); Opioids and related drugs (Darvocet, OxyContin, Percocet, Tylenol with codeine, etc.). Medications that include any form of codeine, such as Percocet, Tylenol 3, or Vicodin, must be used with care because they can cause dependency quickly.

* Your headache occurs daily or almost daily (3 or 4 times a week).

* Your headache deviates in form, location on the head, severity and strength.

* You have a lower than normal threshold for pain.

* You begin to notice evidence of an increasing tolerance to the effectiveness of analgesics over a period of time.

* You notice a spontaneous improvement of headache pain when you discontinue the medications.

* You are considered a sufferer of a primary headache disorder and you use prevention medication frequently and in large quantities.

* Even the slightest physical movement or bare minimum of intellectual expenditure causes the onset of the headache.

* Your headache is accompanied by any of these symptoms: anxiety, depression, difficulty in concentration, irritability, memory problems, nausea, and restlessness.

* You suffer withdrawal symptoms when you abruptly are taken off the medication.

If you have rebound headaches due to the overuse of medications, the only way to recover is to cease taking the drugs. If it is caffeine that is causing your rebound headaches, reducing your intake may be of help. Before deciding on whether you want to stop abruptly or gradually, the following need to be considered:

1. Make sure you consult with a physician before withdrawing from headache drugs. Certain non-headache medications, such as anti-anxiety drugs or beta-blockers, require gradual withdrawal.

2. The patient (you) may need to be hospitalized if the symptoms do not respond to treatment, or if they cause severe nausea and vomiting.

3. During the first few days, alternative medications may be administered. Examples of drugs that may be used include corticosteroids, dihydroergotamine (with or without metoclopramide), NSAIDs (in mild cases) or valproate.

4. Whatever method you choose when stopping your medication, you will go through a period of worsening headache afterward. Most people will feel better within 2 weeks, however, headache symptoms can persist for as long as 4 months and in some rare cases even longer.

Good News

Many patients experience long-term relief from all headaches afterward. The conclusion of one study showed that over 80% of patients significantly improved 4 months after withdrawal.

Whey Protein Powder and Depression – A Correlation Exists!

Most people don’t know about the relationship between Whey protein is usually recognized as the supplement that helps body builders bulk up. The truth of the matter is that why protein powder has loads of benefits for all different types of people, whether it be young, old, gym rats or couch potato.

Most people don’t know about the relationship between whey protein powder and depression. Whey protein is usually recognized as the supplement that helps body builders bulk up. The truth of the matter is that whey protein powder has loads of benefits for all different types of people, whether it be young, old, gym rats or couch potato. Seriously, I started making myself these protein shakes several years ago (although when I first heard of this stuff I was skeptical), and it’s boosted my mood and my energy to hit the gym!

The reason work-out nuts love whey protein powder is that it helps in providing you with energy when you exercise and with getting your muscles back to shape after a workout. But the consumption of it also helps you get the correct amount of all proteins, minerals, vitamins, and carbs. When you get the correct amount of vitamins and minerals you end up feeling fuller and more satiated, thus leaving you less prone to overeating. Furthermore, the immunoglobulin in this type of protein helps boost your immune system!

When it comes to helping treat depression, a supplement called glutamine found in whey protein powder has been shown to do the job. Another reason this protein is thought to help treat depression is that it is full of tryptophan, an amino acid which has been shown to increase mood and lower stress levels. There are lots of studies showing the relationship between tryptophan levels and depression- all of them showing a negative correlation between the two (that is, the more tryptophan in your diet, the less prone you are to getting depressed). Turkey is also chock full of tryptophan, and have you ever noticed how wonderful, but maybe a bit guilty, you feel after having that thanksgiving dinner?

If you care about your figure, as I’m sure most of you do, and want an extra boost in mood, you should think about purchasing whey protein powder and adding it to your health regime. If you don’t want to spend money on the protein shakes, then at least eat a banana a day, as it also contains tryptophan, plus lots of other beneficial nutrients to help you work out!

Curing Phobias Quickly: 3 Secrets Revealed

When it comes to curing a phobia, conventional treatments would dictate that it can be a long and expensive process that involves months of counselling. The good news for phobia sufferers is that using NLP techniques, curing a phobia can be a simple, ten minute process that can be carried out in the comfort of your own home.

The most important consideration in curing a phobia needs to be the wellbeing of the person suffering the phobia. Some treatments involve deliberate exposure to the trigger for your phobia in order to desensitise you. Unfortunately this can involve triggering an episode, and as any sufferer will testify this is best avoided. The good news is that using NLP techniques there is no need to trigger an episode of the phobia, and if you start to feel like you may suffer an episode it is possible to bring yourself out of the episode before it fully develops.

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming involves specific language techniques. As a result it is important to seek the advice or guidance of someone who understands NLP. However in saying that no specific skills are required to carry out the techniques. So, a specific guide or booklet will allow you to carry out the techniques in the comfort of your own home.

The final consideration is that these techniques work very rapidly to overcome a phobia. A phobia is triggered by a particular thing or stimulus which results in a pattern of behaviour which brings on the phobia. In breaking the relationship between the stimulus and the behaviour it is possible to cure the phobia in as little as 5 to 10 minutes. The NLP technique can also be repeated multiple times if required.

This article is not designed to be a guide for curing a specific phobia but more an outline of how NLP techniques can be used to cure phobias quickly. For more information about specific nlp phobia cures and phobia treatments you can visit my website.

How To Overcome Anxiety Using 2 Fingers

If you’re trying to overcome anxiety, then you’ll know that everyone around you (friends, family, even doctors) will constantly tell you to treat your anxiety, to fight it, to medicate it, to talk about it in therapy. People will tell you to do everything but just accept it.

And the crazy thing is, accepting it and letting it be is the first step to getting it to stop.

This is one of those weird things that sounds like it can’t be true, but it really is. You’re probably asking how letting yourself panic and doing nothing to stop it could possibly stop you panicking and being anxious, and how it could ever help you overcome anxiety?

Okay, an example to prove my point, because you need to accept this so you can benefit from it.

Chinese finger traps.

You know them, I bet. You put one finger in each end and it tightens as you pull your fingers apart. The more you pull, the tighter it gets. The only way to get your fingers out is to push them together to relieve the tension.

Imagine for a minute you had your fingers in a Chinese finger trap, and you didn’t know how they worked. Imagine you knew you would die if you didn’t get your fingers free within 20 seconds.

Do you think you would ever consider pushing your fingers together? No way. Because if you thought you were going to die, the severe panic you’d feel means you would switch completely onto instinct.

When you panic, instinct is all there is.

And when you think that getting your fingers free is the only way to live, the only thing you’ll be doing is pulling them apart.

Panic attacks and severe anxiety work exactly like Chinese finger traps. When your anxiety increases, that’s just like putting your fingers in the Chinese finger trap.

And the way you fight the panic and try to stop it happening is just the same as trying to pull your fingers apart. It makes the trap tighter and it makes your panic worse.

The worse your panic gets, the more you pull. And before you know it, you’re in a vicious circle of panic and struggle, panic and struggle, panic and struggle.

This doesn’t just happen with panic attacks either.

Your general day-to-day anxiety is like this too. Your instinct is to fight it, to stop it, to somehow make it go away by doing something. When really, the solution is not to do something.

I hope this is making sense the way I’m explaining it, because trust me, when you get this it will change everything. So even if you’re not really with me yet, I’d like to give you a little exercise you can try so you can see for yourself that this works, and you need to stick with me here, because this is genuinely a way to overcome anxiety, even in the worst cases.

Here’s What You’re Going To Do Next

Next time your anxiety increases to the point that it’s unpleasant, or even when you have a full-blown attack, you’re going to do a kind of “mini mindfulness mediation session.”

But a very specific session.

When your anxiety increases, or your panic attack happens, sit down or lie down and consciously let your anxiety or panic happen.

Let it happen like you’re watching yourself from the outside. You’re just watching someone else being anxious. And then start to focus on the most unpleasant and strongest sensations your panic and anxiety is causing you.

It might be:

  • palpitations
  • rapid breathing
  • dizziness
  • unpleasant thoughts
  • or anything else that affects you

Whatever is worse for you when you panic.

And yes, I really did say that: focus on the worse things. And do nothing.

In mindfulness meditation, you focus entirely on one or two things so they occupy your mind, and this leads to eventual relaxation. In your case, you’re going to use the unpleasant physical and mental effects of anxiety as your focal points.

And inside your mind, as you focus on these things, you’re going to talk yourself through them. Not judging them, not being angry at them. Nothing.

Just neutral observations.

So you might say to yourself, “My breathing is fast, much faster than normal. I can feel my lungs filling and emptying and I can feel my heart beating hard.” And observe your breathing while you do this.

No judgments at all. Just like a bland commentary.

“My head’s spinning and I’m thinking about heart attacks and dying,” and whatever other things go through your mind at times like these. And just keep this up.

Noting how you feel, narrating it to yourself in your mind, not fighting or trying to stop or change the way you feel.

If things that are unpleasant get better, describe how they’re better to yourself, still not judging or trying to force the changes.

Just let it happen.

A panic attack never ended because you wanted it to, remember that, so you’re not losing anything here.

And while you’re thinking these things to yourself, have a picture in your mind of a Chinese finger trap, and remind yourself that fighting against the trap makes the trap tighten around you.

Don’t give your panic any more power by fighting it.

This exercise might sound slightly silly to you, but it works because it saves you the struggle against your panic every time your anxiety increases.

It works because when you do this enough, you train your body and your mind not to dwell on anxiety when you notice it. Instead, you learn to let it exist there until it passes.

This is how people without anxiety disorders do it.

People without severe anxiety problems have anxiety and worries too, but they aren’t trained to resist it the way you are, so it passes and they move on.

You can become like this too, and if you can start using the simple technique I’ve shared with you today you can become like this very soon. It’s exercises like the one you’ve just learned that really help people to overcome anxiety, even after years where there seemed to be no hope at all.

You owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

Get Over Your Sleep Disorder With Orthomolecular Medicine

Treating and healing sleep disorders with ordinary amino acids is the basis for Orthomolecular Medicine. Large doses of naturally found proteins called amino acids can repair the imbalance in the brain and repair its malfunction. These amino acids are affordable and are used in therapeutic doses much larger than those levels normally found in food. The concept of orthomolecular medicine is based upon the use of very large doses of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or botanical extracts for the cellular repair and enhancement of normal brain activities.

Are you not getting a promotion because you are tired at the office? Are you close to a divorce from fatigue and lack of sleep? Can you not handle your children because you are too tired? Sleep disorders can cause many problems and you may not be able to break the pattern on your own. Sleeping pills can help you fall asleep, but most cause you to sleep too much or wake up with fatigue. Modern orthomolecular medicine can help these problems disappear for many people within several weeks. There may be sleep habits that also need to be altered and dietary changes that should be made. Do not eat or watch television in the bedroom if you have sleeping problems. Stay out of bed until you are ready to fall asleep. Purchase a good mattress and cotton, silk, linen, hemp, or wool linens for the bedroom. Try to avoid caffeine and excess alcohol in the late afternoon and evening. Do not take over the counter sleeping aids.

Orthomolecular Medicine uses several supplements to improve and enhance sleep. These can be botanical products like Kava, Valerian, St John’s Wort, Passion Flower, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile. The botanicals should be taken on a daily basis for several months. This may take three to five weeks to make a noticeable change in sleep.

Melatonin and a combination of Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium should be tried for very serious sleep problems. Melatonin does not always work and should be taken in levels of 1.5 to 3 mcg/day about thirty minutes prior to bedtime. You may want to take selenium along with the melatonin to enhance your immune system.

Chinese patent formulas to improve sleep include Amnien Pian, Bu Nao Wan, and Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan. There are at least twelve different patent formulas from China that can aid sleep. The correct formula is selected based upon your needs. Most Chinese patent formulas should be taken for at least six weeks or longer to address the underlying disorder causing the insomnia symptom.

Amino acids needed to enhance sleep include 5-HTP, theanine, and GABA. The addition of bio-identical hormones may be needed for men in andropause or women in menopause. Do not ever take any type of hormone without a blood test or saliva test to determine which hormones are low. Remember that the Chinese have avoided many sleep disorders and hormone imbalances by using food therapy and Chinese herbs. Consider these options with a healthcare provider.

Dry Cracked Feet – What Causes This and How Best to Treat It

Dry Cracked Feet can be extremely painful and in turn and lead to much distress and pain. It is imperative therefore that you recognize the causes, symptoms and possible treatment options available for dry, cracked feet.

Dry skin can affect any part of the body, but the soles of your feet are very susceptible to this condition as they, like the palms of your hands, lack sebaceous ( oil) glands to help keep them lubricated. These glands secrete sebum, which helps to prevent the evaporation of moisture from the skin. Remember also, that dry skin can be the result of a nutritional deficiency. Be mindful in particular of vitamins A,B complex, C, D or E. Some find that rubbing lotion on your feet on a daily basis may help to ease the condition- it is imperative that basic foot care is a routine daily habit.

First of all you need to rule out that the dryness and cracks on your feet are not caused by Athlete’s foot. If they are seek specific treatment for this condition. Having ruled this out then we are left with a probable cause of neglect! By ignoring your feet and basic foot care, including choosing appropriate footwear, the result may be painful and unpleasant consequences. This will include at times – rough, dry and at times painful skin. Calluses can form on your heels an, balls of your feet, and on your toes. They can thicken and in turn crack and harden if action is not taken to pare down and soften. Walking in turn can become extremely painful. If you exercise, your feet perspire a lot. In warmer months this will not pose such a problem, but in winter, the air is drier and colder and your soft, sweaty feet will dry and crack after removing your running shoes if you don’t care for them properly

Treatment and Prevention

If you’ve allowed your feet to become hard and leathery, you must first soften them before you can begin the process of healing the dry skin condition.

Try to prevent dry, cracked skin forming by not waiting until winter to start treating them. Begin at the end of summer with some preventative maintenance so that you never reach the dreaded skin-splitting stage.

Do always see a physician, if your feet become resistant to treatment i.e. if they have become extremely hard dry and thick. The elderly in particular often suffer from dry skin problems, mainly due to the inability to simply bend over and reach their feet to take care of them. A doctor or other foot specialist would be of great assistance with their basic foot care needs

Client Care Tips For Your CNAs – Dressing & Grooming

Helping clients with grooming and dressing is part of the job of a nursing assistant. Do the CNAs at your workplace know how important this everyday task is to their clients? Do they use dressing and grooming activities as an opportunity to observe their clients? By sharing the following information and tips at your next CNA inservice meeting, you may give your aides a different perspective on personal care.

Looking Good…and Feeling Better!

At first glance, getting ready for the day is so clear-cut and easy that we often don’t give it a second thought. We simply get dressed, brush our teeth, comb our hair and perform all the other tasks we need to do to make ourselves presentable. Now, just imagine if:

  • Your arm was stiff and you couldn’t get your shirt on.
  • You couldn’t reach back to close a zipper or hook your bra.
  • Your legs hurt and you couldn’t reach down to put on your socks or shoes.
  • Your fingers were bent from arthritis and you couldn’t tie your shoelaces.
  • You were unable to remember how to put your clothes on-or in what order.
  • Your arms shook so badly you couldn’t brush your teeth, comb your hair or shave yourself.

For people who have physical or mental impairments, dressing and grooming tasks are often difficult to manage alone. Sometimes they might take their frustration out on the people around them.

That’s where you come in. With your help and encouragement, your clients won’t feel discouraged by their appearance or ashamed that they can’t dress privately by themselves.

A Dozen Benefits of Good Grooming

  1. Letting your clients choose their own clothing gives them feelings of being independent and in charge.
  2. Cheering clients on to do their best while dressing supports a team spirit and gives them a feeling of belonging.
  3. Allowing your clients to do as much as they can by themselves helps their self- reliance grow.
  4. Voicing your approval during dressing and grooming gives clients a sense of being valued.
  5. Looking good boosts each client’s self esteem and may even help a bad mood disappear!
  6. Dressing your clients helps protect the skin from injury and maintain proper body temperature.
  7. Making sure your clients’ clothing fits properly keeps all of their body systems unrestricted.
  8. Brushing your clients’ hair promotes a healthy scalp and strong hair.
  9. Providing daily mouth care prevents the onset of painful mouth conditions and protects the mouth from oral diseases.
  10. Keeping your clients’ fingernails trimmed with no ragged edges prevents scratches and cuts that can cause infection.
  11. Reporting toenail changes helps your clients get care from a podiatrist as needed. This can prevent complications for people with diabetes, heart conditions or poor circulation.
  12. Moving your clients’ joints and muscles during the grooming process helps maintain body movement and prevents contractures.

Clues That Matter

Dressing and grooming tasks give you daily opportunities to look for clues that trouble may be brewing. For example:

  • Be aware of clients’ facial expressions. Clients may tell you that they have no pain, but their faces may reveal the real story.
  • Clients get in and out of clothes several times a day. While assisting them, look over the whole body, making note of any areas of redness, rashes, bed sores or other changes in the skin.
  • Report any unusual body odors. A strange odor may be a symptom of an illness.
  • Some health conditions cause the body to swell. Watch for signs of swollen hands (such as tight rings) and swollen feet (such as shoes and socks suddenly being too small).
  • As you brush or comb your client’s hair, check for head lice. (Lice can happen to anyone-no matter how young or old, dirty or clean, rich or poor.) Look for white eggs known as “nits”. They look like small bits of dandruff, but do not wash or flake off. Instead, they stick firmly to strands of hair.
  • If you provide nail care, look for white or yellow areas on finger and toe nails. Your client may have a nail fungus.

Dressing & Grooming Challenges

For confused clients, grooming and getting dressed involves a lot of steps and the use of many different skills. It can be a very confusing time. Clients with dementia may be more cooperative if you give them something to do. Let them help by putting toothpaste on a toothbrush, holding a sock while you put on a shoe or folding some washcloths as you brush their hair.

Consider using a “mirroring technique” when assisting confused clients. For example, hold a toothbrush and pretend to brush your teeth to help a client understand how to perform the task himself.

When clients have shaky limbs, sit and talk to them for a few minutes before starting care since certain types of tremors improve when clients are feeling relaxed. Encourage them to support one arm with the other when performing tasks such as shaving or brushing teeth.

To help vision-impaired clients feel in charge, tell them about the styles and/or colors of clothing items and guide their hands to where grooming supplies are kept. Speak up when you are coming and going to keep them aware of their surroundings and to let them know whether they are alone or with others.

Keep in mind that many people with arthritis suffer from “morning stiffness”. Their joints may be especially swollen and painful during morning grooming and dressing tasks. Encourage your arthritic clients to dress their legs and feet first as this requires the most energy. Have them sit down for as much of the dressing and grooming process as possible-to save energy and to keep them from having to bend over so far.

If a client asks you for a pain pill prior to going through the motions of getting dressed, let a nurse or family member know that the client is in pain and needs attention.

Remember that some of your clients may keep quiet about their pain due to fear, their beliefs or their cultural heritage. Be sure to look for non-verbal signs of pain such as:

  • Clenching or grinding the teeth.
  • Rubbing or holding a body part.
  • Crying.
  • Losing interest in their appearance.
  • Changes in blood pressure (usually higher).
  • Sweating.

As you assist your clients with personal care, remember that it is your duty to notify your supervisor when you know-or suspect-that a client is in pain. Every client has the right to feel relief from pain!

Safety Issues

Keep in mind that some of your clients may find it safer and easier to dress while lying down-especially when it comes to pulling up pants. If a client is weak on one side, encourage him or her to dress the weaker side first.

Report frayed wires on grooming devices like hair dryers or electric shavers to keep you and your clients safe.

Consider using a “buddy system” when caring for clients who have a history of being combative. This isn’t so you can “gang up” on the client, but so that you can remain safe as you perform client care.

Remember that some people feel lightheaded when their body temperature drops. Help your clients maintain an even body temperature by dressing them appropriately for the weather and keeping them away from drafts.

Be sure to adjust your clients’ clothing when they are seated in wheelchairs to keep the clothes from being pulled into the wheels.

The Bottom Line

Remember that everyone has the right to participate in his or her own care. So, encourage your clients to get involved in their personal care. Even if they aren’t strong enough to get dressed by themselves, they can probably wash their faces or comb their hair.

It takes patience and understanding to stand back and let your clients “do for themselves”. However, allowing your clients to maintain as much independence as possible when it comes to dressing and grooming can affect their health in a positive way-and enhance their overall quality of life.

How to Wear High Heels Healthily

A majority of women like high heels but some of them might be wearing heels in the wrong way. The following tips will help you understand how to wear them healthily and avoid potential problems.

First, do not wear high heels of the same height all the time. If you have this tendency, be noted to get rid of it. The reason is that, wearing heels of the same height for a long time will impose pressure on the same parts of your feet and eventually induce disease as time passes by.

Second, try bending your feet before stretching them when sitting down. This method will enable you to relax your feet if you maintain this posture for thirty minutes.

Third, remember to hold your chin up right when wearing high heeled shoes to build an elegant body figure. One should not wear this kind of shoes to climb mountain or go shopping because the pain will be profound and enduring. In addition, it is easy to stumble when walking too fast in high heeled shoes.

Fourth, massage your feet occasionally to relief them from the fatigue and pain.

Fifth, be informed of the occasion when selecting shoes. Some heeled shoes such as high heel wadge shoes are designed for special occasions such as prom, weddings and parties.

Sixth, you are suggested to constantly move your heels backward to make enough room for your toes. Excessive force on your toes will lead to foot disease.

Seventh, make sure that your newly bought shoes are tight rather than loose. Loose heels will expose you to sprain and other dangers. Besides, it is very uncomfortable to wear loose heels.

Eighth, the height of the heels should not exceed six centimeters. Furthermore, the heels should not be too slim or else it will not be able to support the wearer stably. Women who walk frequently are advised to have a pair of comfortable flats prepared so that they can relax their feet anytime they want.

Ninth, if the height of the heels you frequently wear exceeds eight centimeters, the gravity center of your body will move up when you are walking. It is indicated by some researchers that women wear heels more than eight centimeters are more likely to experience nervous headache and higher retinal pressure. The solution is to eat more vegetables rich in Vitamin A to provide adequate nutrition for the eyes.

Tenth, the quality of the high heels is more important than the style because heels of excellent quality are believed to be less harmful to the feet.

The above mentioned tips are hoped to enable women to access both beauty and health.
