Foot Surgery – How to Survive With Both Your Spirits And Your Sanity Intact

It was a difficult decision, but you’ve decided to no longer put up with the pain, irritation, and deformity of a bunion or hammer toe. In my case, it was a severe bunion, with my big toe drifting aggressively towards my other toes, which informed my decision towards major foot surgery. My husband had undergone bunion surgery more than ten years earlier, and this trying experience, both for him as patient and myself as caregiver, had cautioned us both to plan ahead.

The devil is, indeed, in the details. Knowing that you’ll be off of your feet for at least three weeks, and walking with limited mobility in a surgical shoe or boot for as long as eight weeks, takes strategic planning. It’s easy to remember to gather books, DVDs, and magazines in advance of your surgery, but there’s much more that can be done to make your confinement a stress-free experience.

  • Contact your doctor’s office, and pick up prescriptions in advance for any medications or devices, such as crutches, that you’ll need. Your doctor may also be able to sign a form for a temporary handicapped parking placard.
  • Most insurance won’t cover crutches or other assistance devices until two days before your surgery. Be sure you know what your insurance will cover, and when and where you’ll need to pick up materials. A rolling scooter called a knee-walker, such as a Roll-About, is a life-saver and will give you more stability than crutches. Knee-walkers may be rented at your local medical supply company, or on-line.
  • Freeze ice packs in advance. Icing, even weeks after your surgery, will help keep down foot swelling. A small cooler by your bed filled with ice packs will allow you to change them frequently right after surgery. A handy way to keep the ice packs on your foot is to secure them with a long Ace bandage.
  • Even after your stitches come out, you’ll want to put a dressing on your scar to minimize irritation. Purchase gauze pads, surgical tape and stretchy “tender tape” in advance.
  • Your doctor may recommend purchasing a compression sock to minimize swelling. You can also use a tight Ace bandage or purchase an inexpensive forefoot compression sleeve at http://www.therawear.com/foot-and-lower-body-health.html?brand=120&cat=31 . Be aware that you’ll also need a big, loose sock to slip over your swollen foot. My husband’s wool tube socks were perfect.
  • Your foot will need to be elevated as much as possible during your entire recovery. I was given a handy foam block at the hospital. Have pillows at the ready, or purchase a foam block, about 5″ in height, from a craft store.
  • Place a small table by your bedside. Have anything you may need within arm’s reach, such as a water bottle, lip balm, TV remote, telephone, and medications. Another similar table or tray by your couch is useful. A 4-legged cane with a curved handle placed by the bed can act as a bed-rail, and will assist with getting in and out of bed during the first weeks after surgery.
  • Stock up on easy-to-prepare meals, such as frozen foods that can be popped in the microwave. Even after you can walk, a trip to the grocery store will be impractical. Have lots of bottled water on hand.
  • Catch up on your laundry. Laundry baskets will be hard to handle, and if your washer and dryer are located in your basement, it will be weeks until you can manage a wash. Inventory and launder casual clothes in advance, and be sure you have a few pairs of wide-legged pants that can be slipped over your surgical boot.
  • You are at your most vulnerable when bathing. Your doctor may allow you to get your foot wet as soon as a week after surgery, even with the stitches still in, so your foot will still be very tender and unable to bear weight. You’ll want to have the following for a safe bathing experience:
  • Shower stool
  • Sprayer shower-head
  • Grab-bars around the tub
  • Shower gel and wash cloths (rather than soap)
  • Large plastic bags (if your doctor recommends keeping your foot dry)
  • You’ll want to have a comfy, easy to slip on shoe that is close to the height of your surgical boot. Since your foot will be elevated much of the time, you’ll also want a comfortable slipper for your non-surgical foot. I found that most of my shoes were the wrong height, so www.zappos.com was a convenient way to shoe-shop while confined.
  • Will you need to navigate stairs? Using crutches is dangerous – until you can walk in your boot, it’s better to find an alternative method. I went up and down on my butt; my husband used construction knee-pads and went up the stair on his knees. Plan a strategy and practice in advance.

The final, and most important question, is how to keep your spirits up during a long recovery. Make a list of projects that can be done while you’re home and on the couch – photos that you’ve meant to organize, books and movies that you’ve planned to catch up on, the computer game that you’ve never had time to learn. Gather your project supplies in advance of your surgery. Think of this time of healing not as a forced confinement, but as a period of rest and relaxation. Advanced planning will not only be easier on you, but on your caregiver as well.

Upper Respiratory Infection Pathophysiology – Manifestation and Remedy

Upper respiratory infection, or URI, is an acute illness also known as the common cold. It is most often due to a bacterial or viral invasion of the body, that enters through the respiratory system.

Pathophysiology:

URIs characteristically attack the mucosal lining the upper respiratory airway. It is spread by coming into contact with secretions from an infected person, or by the water droplet nuclei produced when a person coughs or sneezes into the environment. This is why covering your mouth when coughing, and covering the face when sneezing is important to prevent the spread of upper respiratory infections to others.

Once a pathogen enters the body, it must overcome particular barriers before causing disease. These barriers include:

– Nose hair

– Mucus

– Cells with cilia located in the lower part of the respiratory tract

– Stomach acids

The purpose of these barriers is to trap the foreign invaders to reduce your chances of getting a cold or the flu. The cells in the lower respiratory tract have cilia that capture and bring pathogens to the pharynx, where they can be swallowed and taken to the stomach where they can be destroyed by digestive juices in the stomach.

Your adenoids and tonsils:

The adenoids and tonsils help to defend against disease causing pathogens due to their immune cells that respond to foreign invaders. These cells include: Macrophages, Monocytes, Neutrophils and Eosinophils.

The general scope of nasopharyngeal passage that comprises of staph and strept even defend from pathogens. People with defective immunity, like AIDS, are in grave danger of contagion factor as their immunity is found grossly deficient.

In return, pathogens are equipped to struggle. Through genesis of toxins and proteases, and by creating capsules, they manage to keep choking of phagocytic cells at bay.

Incubation periods vary among the types of pathogens. Rhinoviruses and flu can take up to 5 days to incubate. Others, such as pertussis and take up to 10 days or as long as three weeks before symptoms present themselves. Epstein-Barr incubation period can be up to 6 weeks.

What kinds of symptoms are witnessed during upper respiratory infection?

People who have never suffered from URIor upper respiratory infection are affected by following manifestations:

– Runny nose

– Head congestion – Feels like there is a hug cork jammed into the middle of your face

– Nasal congestion – Caused by swollen nasal passages that have slammed completely shut

– Chest congestion – Bronchial airways clogged with mucus

– Coughing

– Sneezing

– Sore, scratchy throat

– Hoarseness

– Fever

Treatment:

Treatment for URI is to reduce symptoms. Most colds and flu are caused by viruses, against which antibiotics have no power. Antibiotics work against bacterial infections only. If you have a URI, there are over-the-counter medications for cough, runny nose, congestion, and fever to help minimize symptoms and help you to feel better.

4 Causes Of Thumb Joint Pain

Many people have to deal with a pain in their thumb joint on a regular basis. While this may be a common injury, most people are not familiar with what is causing this pain. Below are four common causes of thumb joint pain:

1. Daily Use

This is one cause of joint pain that may just be unavoidable. The thumb is used for almost ever activity that we can get involved with. This includes picking up items, driving, typing, writing, cooking, etc. The list can go on and on. Depending on your occupation or how active you are, just regular daily use of your thumbs may cause regular joint pain. While this may not be avoidable it is something to be aware of.

2. Straining The Joint

A strain can considered as just using the joint too much. Lifting and holding something extremely heavy is one situation where you can strain your thumb joint. A sprain is similar to a strain and can be caused by jamming your thumb. This can aggravate the tendons, muscles, and nerves in the joint so that every time you use it you will feel some pain.

3. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This condition is caused by using your hands in a repetitive motion. Unfortunately, this condition is becoming more and more common. Part of the reason for this is that everyone is typing on a keyboard more than previous decades or generations. With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome the nerves between the bones and joints are compressed, which causes pain. This condition can be addressed with medication and the worst cases can be treated with surgery.

These days, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is most often caused by typing on a keyboard. Therefore, it is best to study about keyboards and desks that are designed to provide the best angles for your wrists and other joints. There are also devices that can be worn to relieve the stress on the joints so that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is less likely to develop.

4. Arthritis

In general, arthritis affects older people since this condition takes time to develop. Arthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage between the bones. Cartilage cushions the bones, so without cartilage the bones can grind together and cause pain. Although old age is common with arthritis, too much use or a deficiency of calcium can lead to this condition.

While it may not be possible to completely avoid all of the possible causes of thumb joint pain, it is good to recognize what are potential causes. By knowing what can cause this pain, you may be able to avoid some pain in the future.

How to Please the Lord God Almighty

How To Please The LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, MAKER AND CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, THE GREAT GOD JEHOVAH.

As King of kings and Lord of lords and God of gods, His Worship is also His Majesty and appears in all of His splendour to the saints of Glory.

What is there left to do that could possibly get His attention enough to smile on us with the pleasure only a Father of His calibre could know?

HE OWNS EVERYTHING seen and unseen. He as God knows everything.

Nothing is hidden from the Lord past, present or future. His awareness of us is total and complete. There is little we can do, say or be that is pleasing to our Father in Heaven unless it is done with a fully surrendered heart.

This is My Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 3:17

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 17:5

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

2 Peter 1:17

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2 Peter 1:16-18 (in Context) 2 Peter 1 (Whole Chapter)

What pleases the best of fathers is to have a son follow in his footsteps of integrity. Doing what he sees his daddy doing, saying what he hears his daddy saying and being what he knows his father is in every good area of dads life.

David was a man after God’s own heart. How did king David of Israel know what God’s heart was like?

1 Samuel 13:14 God spoke to king Saul after he had displeased the Lord.

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

1 Samuel 13:13-15 (in Context) 1 Samuel 13 (Whole Chapter)

Acts 13:22

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

Acts 13:21-23 (in Context) Acts 13 (Whole Chapter)

The first man that our Lord God created out of the dust only pleased Him for a short span of time. The bliss that Adam knew with the heavenly Father was short lived and changed to great fear after the fall from the highest regard a man has ever had.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

How indeed can you and I enjoy such a privilege as hearing a well done or a thankyou from the judge of all the earth and Heaven? Peter, James and John were given a clue on the mount of transfiguration. They were told to hear Jesus which also meant obey Him.

Matthew 17

1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

4Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

6And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

John 14:21

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 14:20-22 (in Context) John 14 (Whole Chapter

To know Him is to love Him and therefore obey His every command as you would a mighty general in your country’s military. For He is greater than any man that has ever or will ever live. There is no comparing the Son of God to anyone or anything. He truly outshines and excels in all and above all.

Are you feeling it is useless to even try to be in a position of honor where His Majesty glances your way with pleasure in His eyes? Does it seem to you an impossible dream that the Lord of Glory, the Great I Am would utter one word of praise to you? How would you feel knowing that that smile, that chuckle you just glimpsed and heard in your spirit was from Daddy God for your heart only?

Pleasing our Almighty God is not the monumental (emphasis on mental) task you might expect. For you see He is always ready, willing and even anxious to express His Love of all Loves to you. He already gave us His most prized person Jesus Christ and will send Him again to the world to recapture the earth forever.

To please the One who loves us the most entails our believing how absolutely true the Bible is when it states John 3:16 (King James Version)

King James Version (KJV)

16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

Please Him by believing Him and receiving the rewards of that. John 6:29

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

John 6:28-30 (in Context) John 6 (Whole Chapter)

Doing what is right in His sight and like David repenting immediately and making restitution when you fail to move in the direction He has chosen for you. I am writing this article because it is His choice for me. I fought it long and hard reasoning that there are too many voices calling man to repentance already.

Flowers bloom where they are planted among many other plants and so must you and I be what He has decided, where He has picked out for us.

That is pleasing to the Great God Jehovah, our Lord God Almighty and Savior of mankind.

Wonder no more how you can please Him. JUST DO IT!

Passionately, fully given over to His will to love on His Son by loving all those who need His love in word, action and truth.

John 15:12 Jesus said,

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

John 15:11-13 (in Context) John 15 (Whole Chapter)

9As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

How an Ovarian Cyst Rupture Can Be a Serious Situation For Women

Many women will find out during a routine exam by their doctors that they have an ovarian cyst. This is quite a common condition that many be benign or malignant. However, most women find out that their cysts are benign. In fact, many cysts don’t even cause any kind of symptoms whatsoever. Therefore, a woman can go for many years and have no idea that she has had a cyst. However, an ovarian cyst rupture is quite an emergency situation that must be handled quickly to avoid future problems.

One of the problems with an ovarian cyst rupture is that the symptoms that are really similar to what a woman may feel just from the cyst alone. In other words, a common symptom would be pain. Some women who have cysts report that they have a constant and dull pain in their pelvic region. They may also experience pain during other activities such as sexual intercourse or when passing a bowel movement. Some women also state that they have problems during sports and other physical activities that require bending or lifting.

A woman who is experiencing a cyst rupture may also feel pain during their menstrual cycle. However, again, women who have a cyst that hasn’t ruptured may also experience the same kind of pain. Bleeding may be heavier than normal or they might even have spotting between periods. Some women who have cysts also experience amenorrhea which is the ceasing of all menstrual periods. The symptoms can vary from woman to woman.

Most women who experience in ovarian cysts rupture will tell you that they felt a sharp and piercing pain that came on suddenly. It normally happens in the lower abdominal area. If a woman has no idea that she has an ovarian cyst, this pain might be quite frightening and scary.

Any time a woman is experiencing abdominal pain or any sudden sharp pains, she should immediately seek medical attention to make sure of what is going on. An ovarian cyst rupture or a strangulated cyst can also be a serious situation that needs to be monitored by a doctor immediately.

How Can There Possibly Be A Conspiracy Theory About Yeast Overgrowth?

A number of alternative medical advocates believe that yeast overgrowth is a systemic disease and the cause of many diverse, and non specific symptoms other than the apparent, typical symptoms of vaginal thrush, oral thrush and yeast skin infections. They have postulated the conspiracy theory relating to yeast overgrowth syndrome.

The collective name given to this group of non specific symptoms is yeast overgrowth syndrome, Candida hypersensitivity syndrome, yeast allergy, or gastrointestinal yeast overgrowth.

People who suffer from the overgrowth of yeast are most likely to be affected by toxins released by the yeast itself. Such toxins include ethanol and acetaldehyde which have a mild narcotic effect. These toxins, while produced in the bowel, can be absorbed into the bloodstream and affect the brain function, causing a variety of symptoms such as memory loss, a feeling of vagueness, irritability, moodiness, dizziness, spots in the vision or ringing in the ears.

These toxins negatively impact our cells by making it difficult for the white blood cells to fight infection, resulting in rashes, acne and the slowing of the healing process. It also affects the red blood cells ability to flow into capillaries, resulting in migraines, fatigue and muscle aches.

The following list includes many non specific symptoms thought to be caused by yeast overgrowth syndrome:

– abdominal bloating

– reflux and gas

– diarrhoea

– constipation

– migraines

– headaches

– asthma

– ADH

– bad breath

– premenstrual tension

– muscle pain or stiffness

– fatigue

– depression

– psoriasis

– sexual dysfunction

– food intolerances

– and much more

Often these symptoms appear even when there is no clinical sign of Candida albicans, the most common cause of this overgrowth syndrome. While these sub-clinical infections and symptoms are not medically recognised conditions, treatment for systemic yeast overgrowth in these individuals has lead to permanent relief from symptoms.

Keep in mind that just because you do not have the symptoms of obvious yeast infection such as thrush, that this does not imply that you do not have yeast overgrowth. Thrush is just an external symptom, and you may be affected in other areas.

Some people become allergic to yeast and an allergic response can be triggered by the low number of yeasts which reside normally on your body. This is called Candida hypersensitivity syndrome or yeast allergy. Just if you had a allergic reaction to strawberries or penicillin your body will react by setting up either local or systemic inflammations causing any number of symptoms such as redness, itching, rashes, swelling or more serious symptoms.

With Candidiasis now affecting up to one third of the population, and the majority of the population at risk with up to 80-90% harboring the yeast Candida, why don’t doctors diagnose yeast overgrowth syndrome as a cause of many common symptoms and illnesses? Because there has been no action, the alternative medical proponents have suggested the possibility of a conspiracy theory.

There are many conspiracy theories about this subject, but these have not been readily accepted by the medical fraternity. There has not been sufficient medical research done on this matter. This has lead to the conspiracy theory related to yeast overgrowth especially since medical universities and medical reviews that bring doctors up to date are funded and controlled primarily by the large pharmaceutical corporates who are focused on the profits from the sale of their medications. If you look at an average medical review you will see that up to two thirds is dedicated to pharmaceutical products.

By prescribing a pharmaceutical cream or ointment for a yeast infection such as thrush, doctors see immediate results with their patients. But if treatment fails to cure the symptoms or if the symptoms recur, then the doctor may take samples to confirm the diagnosis and to check that the patient is not suffering from a more serious underlying disease such as diabetes. There is an issue with treating the symptoms and not finding out what the root cause of the infection is, because the yeast infection will come back in time. If you use the same medication again and again, the Candida may mutate and become resistant to the medications prescribed.

In a number of countries several of the medications available for yeast overgrowth can be bought over the counter and this has set up a culture where people self diagnose and treat their own Candida infections. There is a risk that the yeast infection is not properly diagnosed and treated correctly. It has also lead to commercial advertising of pharmaceutical medications to treat yeast infections.

Most doctors know about the alternative methods of treating and controlling yeast infections such as thrush. However they have been trained to follow standard protocols for the treatment of these infections. These protocols, in the main, have been established by the medical fraternity and have been confirmed by scientific research. That does not imply that doctors will not assist you to find some natural treatments for controlling recurrent thrush.

If you believe you are suffering from yeast overgrowth syndrome it is important to do research to find out more about this disease and the rationale behind the conspiracy theory suggested by these alternative medical proponents. You can talk to your doctor or do research on the internet. However the best proof is in the cure. Treat your Candida infection and see if your other non- specific symptoms disappear at the same time. It cannot hurt you and may even do you some good.

Rh Shot – Is Getting the Shot During Pregnancy Dangerous?

RhoGAM is controversial.  The RhoGAM shot is made by mixing samples of blood plasma and is administered to women who run the supposed risk of incurring RH Disease (Rheses Factor).

But what exactly is RhoGAM and  why is it effective?

Or…Is it even effective at all?  And what are the risks involved?  Let’s take a closer look…

The RhoGAM shot is made using blood plasma, gathered from hundreds of people to create this immunoglobulin to lower the risk of the Rh Disease. It is given to Rh negative women carrying Rh positive infants to prevent her body from developing an immunity against the babies red blood cells.

Any time you are injected with another person’s blood, you involve risk.  Yes this blood plasma does goes through a sterilization process, but it still has been known to carry pathogens that can cause blood born diseases. (like HIV and Hepatitis)

Another risk is that your RhoGAM shot may contain thimerosal / mercury which is very toxic to the human body. Studies show that mercury passes the placenta wall within hours of an injection with thimerosal.

Possible Side Effects of RhoGAM

Make sure to read the list of potential side effects – this is NOT a complete list:

  • fever, chills
  • swelling of hands & feet
  • back pain
  • arthritis
  • headaches
  • infrequent urination
  • muscle pain
  • vomiting

A Closer Look

Since your baby’s blood does not mix with your blood during pregnancy, than there is zero need for RhoGAM until there is valid reason to believe there was a mixing during the birthing process. I’m not sure why doctors are so insistent on giving the Rh negative mother the RhoGAM shot without knowing if her baby’s blood type.  Some come to the conclusion that this is a way for the pharmaceutical companies to make more money because they recommend you to receive two RhoGAM shots during pregnancy and one after delivery.  This is a lot more than the occasional shot they would give if your baby proves to be Rh positive.

Doctors used to wait to see what the baby’s blood type was at the time of birth and then give the shot if the baby tested Rh positive and you, as the mother, are Rh negative.  Today, your doctor tells you that you need the RhoGAM shot without even knowing the blood type of your baby.

An Exception

The only time you would need the RhoGAM shot before delivery is when you have had a traumatic experience during your pregnancy that would cause your baby’s blood to mix with yours (bad car accident, direct fall to your abdomen, etc).  Otherwise, if you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy – wait until the baby is born and get the baby’s blood type from the blood in the umbilical cord.

Good News

If you have a natural birth with no complications and have waited for the placenta to be born BEFORE cutting the umbilical cord – then there has been no opportunity for your baby’s blood to mix with yours.  Therefore your body will not produce antibodies against a positive blood type and  your future pregnancy will be at no risk.

Additionally, if your baby is born with a negative blood type (just like yours), then you are safe as well!  You will be glad you did not take any previous RhoGAM shots since you didn’t have as positive blood type baby.

If your baby is born with the Rh Factor (positive blood type), then after the baby has been born, you are then free to decide at that point whether or not you would like to be given the RhoGAM shot to protect the future pregnancy.

Is Alcohol Considered A Drug?

Alcohol is often mentioned in one breath with drugs, especially when the subject is abuse or addiction. More often, alcohol is referred to as a separate substance and in fact, its abuse is often discussed separately from that of drugs. But can alcohol be considered a drug?

Drug defined

If a textbook definition is used, a drug may be defined as a substance that has an effect on living cells and their function and is also used for medical purposes for the diagnosis, prevention and cure of disorders and diseases. As such, alcohol may not be considered as a drug since it is not used directly to effect a cure. However, it is also a substance that can have similar effects to drugs to disinfect, act as an analgesic, a tranquilizer or rarely, a stimulant.

The link between alcohol and drugs

Alcohol is said to possibly be a contributor to health as some are some drugs, but alcohol, like some drugs can be addictive. When used in moderate amounts, alcohol has been said to improve cardiovascular health. However, health experts discourage non-drinkers to start drinking alcohol for the sole reason of benefiting the heart. They recommend that other methods such as exercising and eating a good diet, should be considered as the first line of defense.

As an addictive substance, alcohol can be as bad as drugs. Alcohol abuse and addiction, often referred in general terms as alcoholism, is a common problem in many communities, able to cut across economic and social barriers. It also produces a physical dependence and when it does, it becomes a chronic disease. The use of too much alcohol, like drugs, can also increase tolerance and produce withdrawal symptoms.

Like drugs, alcoholism can lead to family, health and social problems. It’s not uncommon for alcoholics to destroy family and social relationships, lose their jobs or turn to illegal activities in order to support their habit. It also causes health problems that are potentially life threatening, such as liver cirrhosis and cancer.

The danger of alcohol

Alcohol affects different people in different ways, and for some that may be trouble. Some individuals, for example, are more prone to suffer from the effects of alcohol compared to others who drink the same amount. However, the danger of using alcohol cannot be emphasized enough. The devastating effect of alcoholism on families and society is well documented and recognized.

Alcohol use is also often discouraged in pregnant women, older people, individuals who have heart diseases and hypertension and those who are taking certain medications. Alcohol, like drugs, not only produces physical dependence, it also promotes neurochemical conditioning, where an individual develops a tolerance to the substance, encouraging him to use alcohol in increasing amounts. Alcohol can also change an individual’s perception in its true benefits, allowing a person to think that alcohol is needed in order for them to function socially and emotionally.

Getting help for alcohol addiction or abuse

Once the problem with alcohol addiction or abuse is acknowledged and accepted, the road to recovery may begin. There are plenty of local and national treatment centers and resources that may be tapped for help, either as a source of information or as a means for rehabilitation.

There are several approaches to the treatment of alcoholism, depending on how it is viewed. However, most treatments tend to focus on encouraging people to stop alcohol intake. It is often supplemented by social networking and group supports, along with life training, to effectively help alcoholics from using alcohol again.

Since alcohol, like drugs, often involves a combination of factors that lead to misuse and addiction, these factors are often considered first before a course of treatment is prescribed. It is often more effective in helping in alcohol treatment and in preventing future relapses.

The Advantages of Knowing Employment Law

In this economic climate, it is not easy to earn money and it is not easy to get employment. Someone who is looking for a good job would need to study, invest time and effort. This is why a lot of people often make sure that they make the most out of what they earn from their employment. Most of them greatly depend on their job when it comes to feeding their families and so many other basic necessities that they need to spend for. It can then be a difficult and life changing experience for an individual if they suddenly get fired from their position and it is not a pleasant experience for those involved. With this, it is perhaps a good for a worker to be aware of the various aspects surrounding employment law.

Having knowledge of employment law can give an employee a shield against unjust treatment from their employers. Sometimes, employers do not give the right benefits to their employees. But if the employees know about employment law, they can claim their rights to a variety of benefits such as health insurances, vacation leave, medical leave and bonuses. They may become even more driven to keep their employment longer and work even harder.

One thing that may greatly affect a worker’s productivity is that some employers tend to be fairly strict and may not let their employees go on sick leave if they are ill. There are some occasions where an employer might not let their employees rest until they literally faint in the office or vomit blood. If the employee has an awareness of employment law, they would be able to go on medical leave without the fear of any serious repercussions.

It can also be humiliating to a worker if they are shouted at in front of their colleagues in the office. It may also lead to an individual developing a feeling of inferiority that they may tend to carry even when they are outside the office. Anything that degrades an individual is not acceptable under employment law. An employee who knows that they are being treated unfairly or illegally should then know exactly how to warn their employers and fight for their rights if needed to.

Some employees also tend to be abusive of their rights. An employer who knows their and the rights of all their employees under employment law should not allow employees to abuse or take advantage of these rights.

The Housefly – An Introduction

Houseflies are insects included in the order Diptera (Gk. di – two, pteron – wing). Most other orders have two pairs of wing (i.e. four in all) but houseflies, bluebottles, hover flies, mosquitoes, tetse flies, crane flies (‘daddy long legs’) etc. have only the single pair. Houseflies are of interest principally because they are associated with the transmission of certain diseases.

Apart from the single pair of wings, houseflies share the typical insect features; their bodies are divided into segments which are grouped into a head, thorax and abdomen. The thorax carries three pairs of jointed legs as well as the wings. There are no appendages on the abdomen.

Houseflies lay their eggs in rotting organic matter, with a preference for stable manure. The eggs hatch into white, legless larvae, (maggots), which feed on fluids and small particles in the organic waste. As they grow, they shed their skins several times but retain the last one as a hard pupal case in which they undergo the drastic changes (metamorphosis) from a maggot to a fully formed housefly. The immature fly pushes its way out of the pupal case and allows time for its wings to expand and harden before it flies off.

The housefly poses a health hazard because of its indiscriminate choice of food ranging from human and animal faeces to food awaiting human consumption. Houseflies cannot take in solid food. They have a proboscis which can be extended on to the potential food. At the end of the proboscis are two flat lobes with a series of parallel channels. The fly places the lobes on the food and secretes saliva through the channels. The saliva contains enzymes which digest the food to a liquid which is then pumped back through the proboscis to the gut.

Any bacteria in the food accumulate in the proboscis channels and are flushed out with the saliva onto the next substance on which the fly alights. If the first food sample happens to be human faeces and the next sample a slice of bread, any bacteria from the faeces will be transferred to the bread and eaten. If the bacteria are those which cause intestinal disease, there is the risk that they will cause that disease in the person who eats the bread. Cholera, typhoid and salmonella food poisoning are diseases that can be spread by houseflies. In addition to the feeding mechanism, the bacteria can also be transferred on the housefly’s legs.

There are several ways of reducing the spread of disease by houseflies. The most obvious is to store all food for human consumption in situations which houseflies cannot reach. It is also vital to dispose of human waste in such a way that houseflies cannot pick up bacteria from it. This can be achieved by modern methods of sanitation and sewage treatment.

Flies have a range of about one mile so it is best if their potential breeding sites, e.g. manure heaps, are not allowed to accumulate near to urban populations.

Trailering Older Horses

Long distance transport for the older horse

The details for preparing an older horse for a long trip are pretty much the same to move any horse long-distance, remembering that the recovery time for an older horse is longer than for a younger horse. Here are the steps to keep a horse safe and to make it a good experience. First let’s talk about the things that you should not do before setting off on a long trip. It is never a good idea to trim your horse’s feet or to vaccinate them a couple days before transport. How many times have we seen horses become footsore because of that trim. And of course, older horses have a higher chance of running a temperature after being vaccinated. If your horse requires a rabies certificate or requires new shoes, please do it several days prior to shipping.

The day of shipping, particularly when it is warm outside, to not grain your horse. Even with slight dehydration, a horse can impact colic from undigested grain in their system. Another note here, horses that are not great shippers have a higher incidence of ulcers. Transport can be highly stressful. Many horse vets recommend medications like Gastrogard to reduce the ulcer risk.

We’ll spend some time here talking about you transporting your horse. Later in the article I’ll have some thoughts about what to expect for your older horse by shipping with a commercial carrier. After you have successfully loaded your horse, one of the most important things you can do is to make their journey comfortable. You should not keep them tied. This prevents them from dropping their heads and keeping their sinuses clear, leading to congestion and possible pneumonia. Next, bring a sufficient supply of hay that they have been eating. Just as we are careful to slowly switch our horses from old hay to new hay at the barn, it is also important to be careful here, and not switch hay, if at all possible.

I recently transported a yearling filly The folks where I picked her up went out to the grain store and bought hay to go with her. It was not the hay that she was used to and she had loose poops as a result. It’s also important to have water available for your horse too. Most horses will not drink in the first 12 hours of transit. Particularly when it’s hot it is important to have water in front of them. We hang a Foraflex bucket and fill it half full while we are moving.

I recommend that you carry water that the horse is used to. It is not always possible but like hay it’s important to keep them eating and drinking the same things they used to at home. It’s also important carry water with you when it is hot weather, if for any reason you are delayed in transit. The last two things to consider when moving your horse cross country are blanketing in winter and rest. I encourage my clients to put a sweat sheet beneath the blanket. That way if the horse is a little upset and sweats up, the sweat has a chance to be wicked away from the body and not stay in the blanket and give them a chill. There are many thoughts about resting the horse in transit.

One is to stop for an hour every four hours to let the horse rest. Recently a study done at Texas A&M found that short periods of rest were not effective. Because I transport horses alone I need to stop each day for an eight hour rest period.

This gives the horses a chance to rest and recover and rehydrate. They come off the trailer fresh at the end of the journey. If time is not an issue and you want your horse off the trailer overnight, I recommend websites like HorseTrip.com that lists horse hotels across the country.

I wanted to take a moment to discuss commercial carriers and how they operate. Most commercial carriers have two drivers, and so equipment really never stops moving. Horses never get a chance to rest and recover. Also many carriers, never give horses their head, but keep them tied. Horses finish their trip often exhausted, dehydrated, and even sick. There are many trucking companies out there that the drivers are just that, drivers not horseman. They’re hauling freight, not horses. The other thing that happens with long-distance commercial carriers is that they don’t take the most direct route. Most recent example I can give you was a transport that I bid on and the person who bought the horse decided to have another hauler to the work, because he was cheaper. What the hauler did not tell him when he picked the horse up in Georgia to go to New York was that he was going via Texas.

Two things occurred here. First, the horse was coming from warmer climate to a winter climate and should have been blanketed for the second half of the trip. And second, the trucker did not tell the client that he was not taking the most direct route. The horse was on the trailer three days longer than necessary, exhausted and sick. So much for saving a couple hundred bucks for the transport. So when you need to use a commercial hauler there a couple of things that you should ask and get answered. First, is it the most direct route possible and second, you need at least three references. I What you horse reaches its destination. It is important to give them at least one day of no work to recover from the trip, and two days with no work is even better. I also suggest that y u give them a full day to rehydrate and not feed to any grain.

That’s it from here. Safe travel.

Reflux Remedy – Naturally Heal LES and Esophagus and Cure Acid Reflux

The most effective reflux remedy works to heal your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and your esophagus and you can do both of these things with your diet.

Isn’t it interesting how your diet and what you eat has such an impact on your health? Unfortunately, your diet most likely caused the acid reflux problem you are suffering with right now. By not eating the right foods, eating them in the wrong quantities, and eating them at the wrong times you have done severe damage to the LES (the stomach muscle flap that keeps food and stomach acid down) and your esophagus (the tube that brings food to your stomach).

Fortunately, your body is a miracle that even scientists have a hard time understanding. And it can naturally heal every part of itself (except the teeth… so you should brush and floss). And it can even naturally heal the LES and esophagus which will cure acid reflux permanently.

Are you interested in a guaranteed to work reflux remedy? Just think of throwing away those annoying antacids by next week!

Why the Reflux Remedy is better than Antacids?

Want to make some quick money? Invest in antacids! Antacids are a quick-fix for treating your acid reflux (also called heartburn). Americans spend more than $3 billion a year on over-the-counter heartburn drugs and more than $13 billion on prescription acid reducing drugs. Yes, that $15-20 adds up quickly!

The problem with this is that antacids are simply hiding the problem and not healing the problem. And even more problematic is that antacids are actually slowing hurting you more with each antacid you pop. Let me explain.

Taking one antacid after a spicy meal is perfectly fine but continuously relying on the antacid by taking too many can lead to potentially serious health problems. For instance, millions of antacid regulars have suffered from calcium-based kidney stones forming. Diarrhea is also a common side-effect when antacids are over-used. Other side-effects include low blood pressure, breathing problems, and even osteomalacia (bones become brittle). Now you know why Zantac, Prilosec, Pipcid AC and Tagamet all have warnings that say “Do NOT take for more than 14 days”.

Though an antacid may seem like a good idea at the time, you should consider curing your heartburn with a reflux remedy and not hiding the problem anymore.

Reflux Remedy Heals LES and Esophagus

First off, it is important to know that the reflux remedy will cure the problem behind the acid reflux and not just hide the symptoms. How will it do this?

Antacids are used to neutralize the acids which will treat the symptoms. Though you will feel better for the time being, you know that you are one meal away from feeling the same way. The reflux remedy does just the opposite!

The remedy works to teach you what foods will work to heal and strengthen the stomach muscle flap called the sphincter. By strengthening the flap, you will be able to allow food to enter the stomach and keep the stomach acids down (where they belong).

Here is a quick check-list to see if you are working to heal your esophagus and LES or hurting them.

1. Your Diet! Probably the biggest cause of the heartburn. Here is a quick list of foods that trigger flare-ups: chocolate; citrus fruits; spicy foods; fatty foods; and fried foods. Buy a journal and note the times and foods that are consumed before the flare-up. You should notice a pattern in a couple weeks.

2. No Crunchy Foods! Our treatment calls that you abstain from hard foods for the first few days of the treatment. During this time, your esophagus will get a rest and be allowed to heal itself from the crunchy and spicy foods.

3. H-Two-O! You should get in the habit of drinking a tall glass of water after every meal or snack. You should eat five smaller meals per day as opposed to three large meals. Water will help cleanse the sphincter flap so it closes up tighter, not allowing gases and acid to leak up into your esophagus, causing the pain.

4. Chew Much! This is a lost habit but an effective one! You should learn to chew your food thoroughly. There are numerous benefits which include: better digestion, eating less, preventing heartburn and even losing weight.

5. Apples! This is a free-be!

Lymphatic Herbal Cellulite Remedies

Whilst there are hormonal factors that are believed to influence the development of cellulite, poor circulation and not enough exercise are also considered culprits in this condition. Based on the latter principle, recommended herbal cellulite remedies are the lymphatic herbs. Lymphatic herbs assist the body in getting rid of wastes and metabolic by-products. The principal herbal remedies recommended by natural therapists include cleavers, echinacea, poke root, and dandelion.

Cleavers is a diuretic, astringent, and lymphatic herb. As well as being used for cellulite, it is used for cystitis, edema, upper respiratory infections and inflammation, and the treatment of chronic skin problems. This includes psoriasis and eczema, and other non-chronic skin diseases.

Echinacea is a popular immune stimulant with antiseptic and tonic properties. Despite being an immune stimulant, it can be used in immune problems like allergies, as well as autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. Like cleavers, it helps cleanse the blood and the lymphatic system, making it a great choice for cellulite. Echinacea also stimulates the circulatory system, and is used in a lot of skin conditions. Examples include boils, herpes, eczema, psoriasis, and skin ulcers. It can be used externally as well as internally, and the species echinacea augustifolia and purpurea are generally preferred.

Pokeroot is an immune stimulating, alternative, anti-inflammatory herb that has great benefit for the lymphatic system. It is used for chronic rheumatism, tonsillitis, mastitis, mumps, acne, ringworm, and tinea. It can be used externally and internally, though it should not be used in large doses as it can be toxic. The recommended range for teas is 0.06 to 0.3g of the dried root three times a day. If you’re using a tincture or fluid extract, the dosage will be on the bottle.

Dandelion is a diuretic liver tonic that helps increase the loss of metabolic waste through the feces by increasing the production of bile. It is used for skin diseases, hypertension, digestive problems, exposure to toxins, gout, rheumatism, arthritis, fluid retention, and jaundice. Both the leaves and the root are used, the leaves having a stronger effect on the kidneys, and the root on the liver.

These herbs can be prepared singly or used in combination. If you’re using them in combination, the best way to take them is probably as an herbal tea. You can usually buy dry herbs from a good health food shop, although if you’re having difficulty sourcing some of them, there are a lot of small online growers that sell herbs directly to the public. You can often pick up good quality, organic herbs from them at very reasonable prices.

Quantities in herbal tea recipes are usually given as a relative measure. So, for the cellulite tea, you take one part cleavers, one part poke root, and two parts echinacea. Pour boiling water over the herbs and let them infuse for about 5 minutes. Then, strain the liquid off, and drink one cup three times a day.
