Eating their own poop or that of another dog is not only a disgustingly bad habit that many dogs partake in but it can also be an indication of health problems.

Abnormal indigestive behavior such as eating poop, rocks, iron, glass, ice, screws, gravel, dirt, or just eating abnormal amounts of food can be related to PICA (Pie-Kuh)–consistent ingestion of nonfood material or Coprophagia (cop-ra-FAY-jee-a)–ingestion of feces.

According to The Merck Veterinary Manual, PICA and Coprophagia can be signs of behavioral problems such as obsessive compulsive disorders. However, some animal studies by holistic veterinarians suggest that a lack of nutrition may also be the culprit.

Although your dog may be eating a well-balanced diet of both wet and dry foods, the ability of your dog’s digestive system to properly absorb the nutrients in the fool may be less than adequate. Dogs are instinctively driven to scavenge or find foods to supplement their needs and will often turn to such things as feces, vomit, and decaying flesh to find these valuable nutrients.

Some foods that are difficult for a dog to completely digest, such as carrots and grain-based foods, can become a trigger for the dog to ingest feces. A diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein may help to improve your dog’s ability to digest food and to produce stools that are less appetizing.

Many holistic veterinarians suggest supplementing your dog’s diet with enzymes such as those found in Prozyme. Other suggest the use of herbs such as ginger or cinnamon in tiny amounts (1/8 to 1/4 tsp) sprinkled on their food to make the feces less appetizing. Autocoprophagia–when a dog partakes in eating his or her own feces.

Intraspecific Coprophagia–when a dog partakes in eating the feces of another animal in his or her own species.

Interspecific Coprophagia–when a dog partakes in eating the feces of another species of animal such as cat feces or deer and rabbit droppings.

Other reasons for a dog eating feces include a need for attention, (even if it is from being disciplined by their owner), copying other animals who engage in eating feces, following the maternal instinct to clean up, or simply not being fed enough to satisfy their appetite.

Whatever the reason, it may be more than just a disgusting habit and should be investigated to ensure the health of your canine.

Common Reasons For Pregnancy Nausea in Third Trimester

For most pregnant women, nausea and vomiting are most likely to develop in the first month or two of pregnancy and start tapering off by the end of the first trimester-by week 18 at the outside. But as many as 20 percent of women may find that their symptoms of pregnancy nausea lasting into the third trimester, and 5 percent experience nausea and vomiting right up to delivery.

For some women, morning sickness stops after a few weeks at the start of their pregnancy, only to return again around week 27 or after. Still other women have no nausea at all in early stages, and are quite surprised to find it developing in the last three months.

Of course, at any time, a sudden onset of nausea and vomiting can be due to a virus or other illness. Especially if it is accompanied by diarrhea, it could be the flu or food poisoning. At this point, stomach capacity is even smaller, and it’s even more important to stick to smaller meals to reduce this stress.

So nausea in the third trimester isn’t necessarily unusual or worrisome. However, there are a couple of serious late-pregnancy liver diseases that can also lead to nausea and vomiting, including acute fatty liver of pregnancy and HELLP syndrome. Though both of these ailments are truly rare, they are also life-threatening if untreated. For this reason, doctors now recommend that any woman experiencing nausea and vomiting accompanied by upper abdominal pain and “malaise” in the third trimester of pregnancy have her liver enzymes and renal function evaluated, along with a complete blood count.

Also, any woman who is experiencing nausea and vomiting in combination with severe headaches, facial swelling, sudden swelling, abdominal pain, and visual disturbances (e.g., seeing spots) should call her physician immediately. These are signs of preeclampsia, an illness that can develop quite rapidly anytime after the 20th week of pregnancy and that affects as many as 8 percent of pregnancies. Preeclampsia can cause strokes and kidney damage, liver failure, blot clots, fluid in the lungs, seizures, and even death of both the child and the mother.

There is one final factor that can lead to nausea in late pregnancy-though in this instance it is a bit easier to diagnose. If nausea, vomiting and diarrhea coincide with cramps, backache, pelvic pressure, and contractions occurring less than 10 minutes apart, labor has begun.

While not uncommon, then, nausea late in any pregnancy merits a consultation with your care provider. In most cases there are ordinary and harmless reasons for it, but there is an outside chance that is a symptom of one of these several serious illnesses that occasionally arise during the late weeks of pregnancy.

Is Gaviscon Really Safe For My Acid Reflux? What Every GERD Patient Should Know

“Is Gaviscon really safe for my Acid Reflux?”

I asked the same thing to myself when I first heard of the drug from a friend of mine. Her description of it was a liquid antacid that tastes good (I don’t know about you, to me… sort of) and is quite effective in alleviating the symptoms of acid reflux, GERD, or heartburn.

Sounds good to me, I thought to myself. But I’m not the person who easily jumps into newer medication, especially the ones that you have to take on a regular basis. If you are like me, I normally do research and get the facts straightened out and just don’t trust any doctor’s advice. I even have my own take on other meds such as the purple pill (Nexium), Maalox, and other antacids (even TUMS).

So I guess it’s a natural reaction for me to ask if Gaviscon is really safe for my acid reflux. Does it actually do what it claims to do? Or are there any better alternatives?

Here’s what I found that I believe every individual suffering from the above digestive problems should know. This is quite a bit long article but the information found here is priceless:

First of all, Gaviscon is an antacid that helps treat acid indigestion, heartburn, peptic ulcers, hiatal hernias, as well as reflux esophagitis. In generic form, it’s aluminim with magnesium hydroxide. It is said to help by neutralizing the stomach acid, while simultaneously producing a viscous material which floats on the stomach content.

Inform your doctor as well if you or any member of the family had or has liver or kidney disease or appendicitis. And it is NOT advisable to take Gaviscon for your GERD, if you are both old and suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Gaviscon might also change the effects on some other medication that you are taking – a hard list includes Nizoral, Mandelamine, Rifamate and Tetracycline antibiotics. If you ask me, even if these other meds are non-prescribed or consist of vitamins or food supplements, you still need your wise doctor’s advice.

There shouldn’t be any side effects or complications if you follow the above precautions well, save that the only things you should remind yourself of when taking this drug are that it might cause dizziness and therefore, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking it. One time after dinner and eating the wrong kind of food (spicy pasta), I had no choice but to take it. I did feel a bit dizzy but still managed to drive. I believe the effect varies from person to person.

For knowledge’s sake, the common side effects include “dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and diarrhea”, of which if any of these occur while taking Gaviscon, you are advised to consult your doctor immediately.

I’m sure you’re also asking if there is such a thing as Gaviscon overdose. The answer to that is definitely, just like all drugs do. That’s why you should only use the recommended dosage and if you think you had an overdose, contact your doctor immediately. Overdose symptoms include “drowsiness, dizziness, stomach problems, weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and loss of consciousness”. Never ever take a double dose at a time… even if the packaging is pleasing to the eye and it tastes good to you, just like it does to me.

If you want to know the most important thing to remember about Gaviscon for GERD is that because it is an antacid, it should not be taken any longer than 2 weeks or larger doses than the ones recommended. All antacids (chewable or liquid form) should only be used for temporary relief of acid reflux or heartburn symptoms.

In the course of my battle with acid reflux and GERD, I’ve found that Gaviscon, along with other usual prescriptive medications, should normally be taken for emergency purposes only. If you want to have long-lasting relief and even cure your condition, then conventional methods are not going to be of any help to you at all. At best you can take them for a week, but this is frankly nothing more but a “band-aid” approach – focusing on masking the symptoms, instead of centering on the root cause.

Just having to read and remember all the side effects, precautions, warnings on overdosage, and important things to remember about Gaviscon, and you’re obviously intelligent enough to know that if you’re not careful, you can easily create another disease or health problem in your body because of this drug. That’s one of the things pharmaceutical companies don’t want folks like you and me to know about… even though they are already plain in sight.

If you want an honest recommendation, take Gaviscon for your acid reflux if you have taken all the necessary precautions and if you need to. Take it consistently for a week at the most and then, for emergency purposes only. But find safer and natural ways to treat your condition. You’ll be glad you did.

It would be helpful to avoid tobacco, alcohol, coffee (caffeinated and decaffeinated), caffeine, carbonated beverages, chocolate, peppermint, refined sugar and pastries, citrus, fried foods, fat and fatty foods, soy products (unless fermented), and especially avoid tomatoes and tomato products. Tomatoes are very acidic. Think twice before you eat that delicious pizza.

You must be very conscientious about reading the ingredients on the packages of the food that you purchase. Sugar is always harmful to the body and is in most food. Tomato is also in a lot of packaged food.

  2. Pour 6 oz. of boiled water over a tea bag in a cup
  3. Place a saucer on top of the cup for 5-10 minutes

After you’ve steeped your tea, it is a good habit to squeeze the tea bag with your spoon up against the inside wall of the cup. Doing that and steeping enhances the strength of the tea.


Other Tips for Controlling Acid Reflux

Modify eating habits:

  1. Eat many small meals during the day
  2. Eat nothing 3 hours before going to bed (especially spicy foods)
  3. Avoid lying down after eating
  4. Eat slowly
  5. Eat in an upright position

Sleep in an upright position or at a 45 degree angle by:

  1. Using a wedged pillow
  2. Using an adjustable chair or bed
  3. Sleeping on your left side at a 45 degree angle so that the sphincter valve closes
  4. Elevating the head of the bed by 6-8 inches with blocks

Try to avoid using abdominal pressure such as:

  1. Heavy lifting
  2. Bending at the waist
  3. Tight belts, clothes, etc.
  4. Slumping in chairs
  5. Straining with bowel movements

Note: With the above diet you may lose a few pounds.

In an average year, the Jockeys’ Guild gets 2500 notifications of injury, and a typical jockey will be sidelined by injuries at least three times.

It’s not just dumb luck that keeps a great rider in the saddle of a 1400-pound thoroughbred horse as it races at speeds of up to 55 MPH. These highly-coordinated men and women must remain standing in the saddle, striking an exquisitely difficult balance to keep from falling forward or backward in the saddle (which could easily prove fatal). While expending this tremendous effort, they must at the same time keep a cool head, making strategic calculations “and reading” the horse’s mood, processing huge amounts of information from microsecond to microsecond. They must practice a consummate athleticism, combining strength, coordination, and calculation at once.

And then, there’s the whole weight thing.

Like wrestlers, jockeys’lives are ruled by a set of scales. If you don’t make weight, you don’t get to race, and the weights jockeys must maintain are almost unimaginably low for most average-size adults. Horses are assigned to carry riders at different, graded weight classes, called “imposts”, and in the twenties the imposts ranged from 83-130 pounds. Jockeys during this period “the heroic, hard-as-nails era of American horse racing” were known to live on 600-calorie-a-day diets, to deprive themselves of water so badly that they’d have to lie around in tubs of ice cubes to forestall overheating, and to return to work within minutes of near-fatal injuries. Some of them would run for hours in the hot sun under layers of clothing, hoping to lose that last crucial ounce.

And those were the less extreme expedients to which jockeys of the thirties resorted. As Laura Hillenbrand relates in Seabiscuit, her riveting 2001 account of the great late-30s racehorse of that name, jockeys then were known to use homemade diuretics in prodigious quantities, purging away what little they did eat using Epsom salts and water and other concoctions so potent that bottles of them occasionally exploded. Bulimia was common. So were pneumonia and tuberculosis, brought on, some historians think, by weakness due to the traumatic effects of malnourishment. Scariest of all, some jockeys voluntarily swallowed tapeworms. After the intestinal parasite had helped them to “reduce”, they went for a visit to the hospital and lost the worm “until it was time to “reduce” again.

Today’s jockeys still have to watch out for anorexia and bulimia, frequent occupational hazards of this sport as of several others with weight requirements (dance, gymnastics, running, wrestling). Most apprentice jockeys can’t afford to weigh more than 105 pounds, and thoroughly experienced thoroughbred horse racers need to keep it around a hard-to-believe 113. (Naturally tall people are rarely able to participate in thoroughbred horse races.) Other inconveniences include crazy travel schedules’ up to twelve races a day, for some. Most of all, jockeys must love horses, demonstrating the same well-honed intuition and sympathy for them that great trainers are known for. Only such ability can enable them to make the split-second judgment calls that win races. And only such love could possibly make the pain, deprivation, hard work and sacrifice worth it.

Clinical Evidence For Glioblastoma Mutliforme Treatment Plans

A compilation of survivor stories for people with brain cancer and specifically GBMs. Most of the survivors listed used natural and/or homeopathic treatments. There are also stories of people who solely did traditional treatments-chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, there are not too many survivors who used chemo and radiation that are more than five years out or so. I am currently three years out!

Hilary Rose

Who: Twenty-eight year old female from England: One year cancer survivor, current MRIs show no cancer cells whatsoever. Andy Watson

Who: Andy is a 49 year-old male who lives in Maine. He was diagnosed with a GBM in 2005. He had surgery to remove the tumor that same year. He is taking homeopathic medicines from a doctor in India. His doctor, Dr. Prasanta Banerji, claims he has treated thousands of brain tumors over a 30 year period with a 75% success rate.

While this may seem impossible and obviously a lie, please consider that Dr. Banerji does not have any financial incentives for sharing this info with those of us in the United States. Most Americans are not going to spend the money to get there, or even trust going to India to see what we consider a naturopath doctor. In India, their “real doctors” use homeopathic medications. Andy personally knows many who are having success with Dr. Banerji’s treatment. Andy also says that he was the most anti-homeopathic person around, but that his personal results have changed his mind. He has been able to avoid a second surgery so far, and is waiting to see more results.

Ryan Weidman

Who: Ryan is a male in his late thirties from Wisconsin. He was diagnosed with a GBM in 1997. He had surgery, radiation for six weeks, chemotherapy, and an experimental drug called DFMO. His neuro-oncologist, Dr. Choucair (not sure if this is the same Dr. Choucair I recently saw in Salt Lake, but it’s probable as neuro-oncologists are few and far between) told him he had a three percent chance of living five years. He immediately got an infection on his skull after finishing chemo and radiation. Ryan’s last MRI was in 2002, which showed no growth. He is now thirteen years out.

Treatments: Radiation, Chemotherapy, and DFMO.

Laura DeBarba

Who: Laura is a 44 year old female, who was diagnosed with a GBM in 2002. She had surgery, completed six weeks of radiation and Temodar (chemo), and is now following a personalized supplement plan put together by Jeanne Wallace, a very successful and renowned nutritionist that specializes in treating brain cancer. Laura also reads a lot of spiritual books and maintains a positive attitude. She is now five and a half years out.

Tim Herron:

Who: Tim is a 15-year survivor in his fifties who took an extreme faith-based approach to handling his surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. He also maintained a metabolic diet (which includes detoxification and nutritional replacement). Tim recognizes the pointlessness of the obvious clash between medicine and natural healing. He sees the animosity felt on both sides towards each other and wishes that they could work together instead of fighting against each other.

Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation, faith in God, and a specific diet without sugar, meat, and full of fruits and vegetables.

Candice Jackson

Who: Candice is female in her mid fifties who lives in Warren, MI. She was diagnosed with a GBM in 2001. She did chemo and radiation after surgery. Candice struggled with her insurance company and the government to pay her medical bills. After her employer was forced to fire her due to his failing business, he continued paying her premiums through COBRA until he could no longer. She struggled to pay the over $1,000-a-month medical bills, before going bankrupt. She was saved by Medicare. I know Candice survived until for at least six years, as I found a letter from the state regarding her daycare facility, dated from October, 2007. I e-mailed her to see if she is still alive and in good health, but haven’t heard back from her and her e-mail address isn’t active any longer.

Who: Venoir is a seven year breast cancer survivor who was treated by Dr. Gonzalez in New York. She followed his treatment plan of which consisted of a sole nutritional approach. Venoir also recommends anyone with brain cancer see Dr. Burzyinski and his at his clinic in Houston, TX. She knows people who saw him and are now ten year stage IV brain cancer survivors.

Treatment: Personalized nutrition under the guidance of a medical doctor.

Canadian Research

In a study conducted by the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences, they reviewed 286 glioblastoma patients, both long-term survivors (three years or more), and newly diagnosed, and ran a series of tests. These patients all live in Alberta, Canada and the study was conducted from 1975 to 1991. In the study, they found that 1.8 percent of their newly diagnosed patients survived more than three years. All of the newly diagnosed patients underwent the standard radiation and chemotherapy procedure. They also found that the cell type found in recurrent GBMs versus the cell type in new GBMs have fewer mitosises and a lower proliferative index (the rate at which the cells divide). The study showed that radiation was generally twice as effective on newly diagnosed patients over patients three years out or more. I read this report on April 12, 2010, and it can be accessed at


I bring up this case study to make a simple point. I am asked by medical professionals all the time to show them proof or clinical evidence for my alternative treatment plan. I ask them to do the same with traditional medical treatments. If someone were to show me good statistics for using radiation and chemotherapy to treat glioblastomas, I would do radiation and chemo. Unfortunately, I have yet to see these statistics. The statistics I’ve seen for people my age with GBMs is that I have a 14% chance to live more than five years. Because standard treatment is Temodar and radiation, one would conclude that these statistics are representative of people who did chemo and radiation. For me personally, 14% is not good enough. For however foolish this may be, I’d rather go with Dr. Banerji’s outlandish claim of 75%. I know there is no evidence to back his claims, but I have evidence to back the detoxification process that was brought on by the homeopathic regime I’ve used under Dr. Aldridge.

Chronic Sore Throat – Causes and Natural Treatment

Some people pick up a recurring sore throat, whilst others rarely or never succumb to this condition. Let’s have a look at some of the common causes of a persistent sore throat:

Low immunity

The resistance of your body to disease, can determine how often you get a recurring sore throat. If you have poor immunity you are more likely to pick up infections and their accompanying symptoms. Your immune system can be suppressed by a poor diet, stress, smoking, an underlying disease or a genetic weakness.

Chronic viral infection

Some viruses are latent viruses that remain in the body for life, and can be reactivated when you are run down or under stress. Examples are the Epstein Barr virus that causes mononucleosis or glandular fever, and the herpes virus that causes recurrent cold sores and ulcers. When these viruses recur infective symptoms like a painful throat, fever and malaise are common.

Bacteria like Chlamydia pneumonia, mycoplasma and Rickettsia can cause low grade infections which last for years. These bacteria live inside your cells and are difficult to eradicate from the body. A combination of conventional and natural medicine is the best approach.

Chronic fungal infection

A persistent sore throat can be triggered by a thrush or Candida. These infections are characterized by white patches on the inside of the mouth and throat. Candida infections are common in those with suppressed immunity.

Food and chemical sensitivities

Three Reasons Why Thick Wall Foam Cooler Ice Chests Are Better Than Cheap Ones

Whether you are out to enjoy the Spring and Summer seasons or simply need a reliable storage container for fishing and other outdoor fun, selecting a foam cooler or foam ice chest is an economical way to keep food, drinks, or seafood catches cold while you’re out having a good time. However, when selecting which to buy, the wrong choice can lead to serious frustration and even food spoilage. When choosing between the cheaper, thin-wall variety (also known as “promotional coolers”) and the thick-wall versions (popularly referred to as “ice chests”), don’t let the seeming cash savings of the cheaper thin-wall product fool you into thinking you’re necessarily getting a better deal.

Thick-Wall Ice Chests Are Stronger

Many of us tend to throw a loaded cooler on the back seat or carpeted floor board of our vehicle, and none of us enjoy reaching for it after we’ve arrived at our destination only to find that the cooler has leaked all over the place. Reducing the risk for infection

It may not always be possible to avoid infectious conditions and penis inflammation. However, by paying attention to penis health care and good hygiene, men can substantially reduce the chances that they will develop a painful inflammatory condition.

Regular penis care should include daily cleansing, using a mild cleanser, rather than an ordinary soap (which can dry the skin and make it easier for bacteria to penetrate). All men should make it a habit to always use a condom unless they are in a monogamous relationship where both partners have tested clean for any STIs. Men who have issues with latex have numerous other options to choose from, so a latex allergy should not be a deterrent in this respect. In addition, careful choice of partners and having open conversations about sexual health are strongly urged.
