Bleeding Ovarian Cysts – Cause and Symptoms of a Hemorrhagic Cyst

There are many different types of legions that can develop on the ovaries of a woman. Bleeding ovarian cysts are one such type and are often referred to as hemorrhagic cysts because of their tendency to leak blood.

While a cyst can bleed as it ruptures, these hemorrhagic types are the most common ones to cause bleeding and do not need to rupture to do so.

Cause of a Bleeding Cyst

A hemorrhagic cyst is a very common type of legion that forms when the blood vessel in the wall of a regular fluid filled cyst breaks and allows blood to flow in. These are functional cysts and do not require any special treatment. In several weeks time, they will absorb back into the body releasing the small amount of blood that has been held inside with the fluid.

Symptoms of Bleeding Ovarian Cysts

Hemorrhagic cysts do not usually cause any pain or come with any symptoms unless they become ruptured. When this happens, blood can leak into the ovary and cause pain. The most common symptoms associated with a ruptured cyst of this kind include:

•    Acute abdominal pain

•    Cramps

•    Bloating

•    Bleeding or spotting

•    Pain during urination or sexual intercourse

In most cases, surgery is not needed to treat a bleeding cyst. If the pain you feel is the result of a ruptured legion, then applying a heating pad or ice pack to the area could help as well as taking pain relievers.

In very rare cases when a large hemorrhagic cyst has ruptured and is bleeding, surgery may be necessary.

Bleeding ovarian cysts are not uncommon, but they are not always cause for alarm. The information above can provide you with an idea of how a hemorrhagic cyst forms, the symptoms they cause and what can be done to treat them if one is found.

Dangerous Intestinal Candida Symptoms You Have to Keep an Eye On

Intestinal Candida symptoms may be very hard to diagnose. The chances for a successful treatment depend on the severity of each sign present. Although it may sound difficult, prompt action must be done to prevent more serious complications.

Obvious and hidden symptoms may vary from one person to another. Who ever is diagnosed early has a higher possibility of regaining it healthy body in shorter time.

Since Candida infection is caused by overgrowth of yeast-like fungus, called Candida albicans, in your body, it will be also normalized once you have a successful treatment.

Intestinal Candida symptoms differ quite a lot from other signs that are also caused by Candidiasis. You will also have a harder time to distinguish from the symptoms of many other diseases. Your intestine is the normal habitat of the Candida albicans fungus.

And because your intestines are their home, therefore it is also the major target of attack by the yeast infection. Once the fungus can penetrate your colon wall, it will eventually spread all over the body, affecting almost all the organs in the body from your skin to your brain.

These symptoms are well distinguished and experienced by sufferers of Candidiasis, such as colitis, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, food allergies, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, rectal itching, intestinal ulcers, leaky gut syndrome intestinal ulcers and sugar cravings.

If you’re suffering from intestinal Candida symptoms, it is essential that you treat your infection immediately, diligently and carefully. Candida albicans is an organism that will sooner or later wipe out your good health making it harder for you to recover, or if not, may leave some permanent complications. It may take you months and years, rather than the usual three to six weeks therapy.

A natural Candida remedy is beneficial, like cleansing your body by fasting, and then indulging your body with a yeast free diet. This is 100% yeast control method and will dramatically end the symptoms of your infection.

Symptoms that You Have to Keep an Eye On:

Leaky Gut Syndrome – This is often referred to as increased intestinal permeability. This happens when you partially broken down food and the toxins get into your bloodstream via the holes that are made by the fungus.

Oral Thrush – Are profound white-colored deposits inside your mouth or within your cheeks. This can bleed once you scrape it.

Diarrhea – This is watery bowel movement. This may lead to your dehydration if not resolved immediately.

Constipation – You find trouble in defecating as defined by presence of hardened stools.

Rectal Itching Skin – This is an inflammation around your rectum.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – It is a persistent disease of the intestinal area commonly defined by fever, pain in your abdomen, diarrhea, weight loss, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and eye and skin irritations.

Flatulence – This is the release of gases from your body.

On the other hand, if you continue to ignore the symptoms of infection like indigestion and bloating, more serious symptom may develop, like:

• Toxic liver

• Food allergies

• Skin disorders

• Fatigue

• Urinary tract infection

• Concentration problems and

• Aching joints and muscles

You have to remember that the best way to treat symptoms of Candida infection is with the use of natural remedies. Natural remedies not only treat Candida but also boost your immune system.

What is Chronic Fatigue and Why Am I So Tired and Cranky All the Time!

What is Chronic fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?

Any person who is suffering from chronic fatigue feels completely worn out and overtired and may even be a bit cranky. It can be an extremely and debilitating exhaustion that often makes it hard for one to manage their daily tasks that the majority of us take for granted – like dressing, bathing or even eating. No amount of sleep or rest makes any difference and even moving around, exercising or using mental energy can often make it worse.

WHO is affected?

Chronic fatigue can affect men, women and even children, although it is more common in women than men and often develops in the early twenties or mid forties. It affects ALL social and ethnic groups equally. To estimate the exact number of people that suffer from this debilitating condition has been difficult to diagnose.

Most that have chronic fatigue just learn to live with it, and never consult their doctor.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of people being diagnosed and that could be due to the decline in our environment (such as the food we eat and the chemicals we use etc) or maybe we are just becoming more aware of the symptoms of chronic fatigue.

WHO gets it?

Those that might possibly develop the symptoms are people who have just recovered from an ILLNESS such as mononucleosis or glandular fever, the flu, bronchitis, hepatitis, the common cold, or even an intestinal bug.

It can in some cases appear after an excessive period of stress like the death of a loved one or a personal or work related trauma.

Another important factor playing a role in who is affected is the weather. More people are being diagnosed in the winter than summer months with those same people having more energy in the summer than the winter. This suggests that there may be some psychosomatic influences with many people feeling more depressed in bad weather than when the sun is shining, maybe this could trigger the more serious chronic fatigue condition.

SIGNS to look out for!

With chronic fatigue the symptoms can come and go or they can stay with the person for months or even years. At first, you many feel like you have the flu but you will also be extremely tired and run down.

Some Symptoms would include:-

o Being forgetful and having difficulty in focusing

o Feeling exhausted even after sleeping

o Aches or even muscle pains

o Aches in joints, pain without any swelling or redness

o Feelings of being “out of sorts” even after 24 hours

o A new painful headache

o Tender lymph nodes under the arm or in the neck

o A tender or sore throat.

Relationship Between Cod Liver Oil and Constipation Explained

The relationship between cod liver oil and constipation is one of natural treatment and ailment. In other words, cod liver oil has been used to provide natural relief from constipation for many years. Other fish oils provide the same benefit, without the risks that can be associated with excess consumption of cod liver oil. Both of these oils provide essential omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for optimal brain, heart, joint and digestive function.

Both my parents and my grandparents took regular doses of cod liver oil and constipation was not a problem for them. After complaining of a “tummy ache”, my mother gave me a spoonful of the nasty tasting, smelly stuff. After that, I kept my tummy aches to myself. Sure, it relieved the constipation, but “Yuck!” I could taste it for hours, every time I burped!

Today, the better fish oil supplements are molecularly distilled to remove the odor. In capsule form, they are tasteless. Storing the capsules in the freezer and/or taking them with food can prevent both the burping and any aftertaste, while still relieving occasional constipation.

Most people experience constipation occasionally. Too little fiber in the diet is one common cause, as is too little water. But, many other factors can contribute to occasional constipation. Prescription medications, dietary supplements containing iron, a sedentary lifestyle, traveling or other changes in routine and stress are some of the many things that can lead to constipation.

Excessive use of stimulant laxatives can cause the eventual dysfunction of the digestive muscles, leading to chronic constipation. Most people find that even occasional use of stimulant laxatives can cause cramping and discomfort. Fish oils improve digestive function, can be taken regularly and are “gentler” than most over-the-counter laxatives, like Ex-Lax. Many people relate cod liver oil and constipation prevention.

Just remember to choose wisely. All supplements are not the same. Cod liver oils contain vitamin A. Pregnant women should avoid supplements containing vitamin A, as it has been associated with a significant increase in birth defects. Too much vitamin A, in even healthy adults can be toxic. In general, it is safer to get your daily vitamin A requirements from food or beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A on an as-needed basis and is therefore non-toxic.

Other concerns over cod liver oil consumption are related to mercury contamination and contamination from other industrial pollutants. Mercury is stored in the livers of fish. Thus, there is a greater chance of mercury contamination in oils that come from fish livers. The source of most cod liver oils is the Atlantic Cod fish, which has been over harvested and swims in some of the most polluted waters in the world.

Fish oils derived from the “flesh” of the fish are generally safer alternatives. But, it is still necessary to choose carefully. Some oils are not molecularly distilled and contain mercury and other contaminants. And, if you are concerned about environmental issues, some fish are over harvested and their populations are not considered sustainable. Manufacturers should list the “source fish” (cod, shark, salmon, etc.), the distillation process used and the ocean from which the fish is harvested, but most do not.

What Causes Ovarian Cysts to Rupture and How to Easily Spot the Usual Burst Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

Any women between 17 and 70 can develop ovarian cysts. Usually, cysts come and go with the menstrual cycles, and most of the times they disappear untreated, and undetected. However, there are some women who have cysts on the ovary that stay, and become a health problem. Find out more what causes ovarian cysts to rupture and how to easily spot the usual burst ovarian cyst symptoms

One complication arises when something causes cysts on and in the ovary to rupture. Most of the time they rupture because there is too much pressure on the lower abdomen, or because the ovary tissue has become so thin, so when the cyst grows larger, it causes the ovary to burst. When talking about pressure, it means that sudden movements, sport activities, sex and also a very bad constipation may be responsible for a burst cyst.

Hence, how can you easily spot the usual ovarian cyst symptoms? One common symptom is bleeding, after and in between your cycles that goes along with pain similar to menstrual cramps but much more intense.

When the ovary spills its content into the abdominal cavity, you may feel nauseous, have dizzy spells, the urge to vomit, develop a fever, and be in excruciating pain. Your body tries to get rid of the foreign mass, and fights it that way. If this is the case, it is high time to see an emergency specialist because your life might be at stake. Often surgery is the means of choice here to clean the cavity from excess blood, pus and the cyst content.

Another burst ovarian cyst symptom is severe pain during intercourse that you feel especially in the pelvic area.

Unexplained pain which is felt in the pelvic area, and around the thighs can be a sign as well. You may also complain about backache, and a persistent pain before, during and after your menses.

If you experience problems with your bladder, this may be also due to a burst cyst. You might feel the urge to have to urinate more frequently without having the sensation that you’ve fully emptied your bladder. This occurs when there is pressure on your bladder.

How to treat a burst cyst in the ovary depends on your individual case, and how severe the problems are. In order to avoid further complications, be alert to any body changes that you become aware of, and seek professional treatment as soon as you can. In the long run, conventional treatments often fail to remove ovarian cysts for good. You may rather think of a holistic approach as your ultimate treatment option that helps to cure burst ovarian cyst symptoms.

Considering a holistic approach is an effective short cut to address the root cause underlying this disorder. Hence, since traditional treatment methods only address the surface symptoms, a holistic, completely natural, approach moves beyond burst ovarian cyst symptoms treating the whole persons, and even prevents cysts from reoccurring in the future.

Magic of Mesquite

The Tree of Life: The mesquite is a tree or bush that grows in desert regions throughout the world, areas not suitable for most agriculture. On 25% of our planet species of mesquite can be found growing without any assistance from fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation or capitalization. This is not surprising since the mesquite tree’s root system can grow more than 100 feet down in search of water, making it a hardy survivor in harsh climates. Like many members of the legume family, mesquite restores nitrogen to the soil.

Mesquite forms fruit of bean-like pods in the fall that have long been a nutritious food source to humans, wildlife & livestock. Mesquite pods do not open when ripe. The pods of all 3 common species of mesquite – Honey Mesquite, Screwbean Mesquite & Velvet Mesquite – are edible, although the Screwbean is less flavorful than the more widespread Honey Mesquite. A favorite of bees and other insects, mesquite flowers produce a fragrant honey.

The mesquite is known as the tree of life because of its many uses – the Native Americans of the desert regions in Arizona & California utilized all parts of the tree. Its bark was used for basketry, pottery, fabrics, rope & medicine. The trunk & branches were used in the manufacture of bows, arrows, mortars & furniture; because it burns slowly and smokeless, mesquite is a good firewood. Thorns were used for tattooing and to make sewing needles. Leaves were used for making tea, as an eyewash and for head & stomach aches. The gum was used as a sweet gum, glue for mending pottery, face paint, pottery paint & hair dye.

But it was the mesquite pod, with its nutritious, bittersweet pulp, that provided the greatest benefit to the desert peoples. Pods were collected in the fall, when they were yellowish-brown in color and still hanging from the tree. They were dried in the sun, then stored in large baskets for future use. Beans (both pods & seeds) were ground into a coarse meal, then by adding water, were transformed into a cake without cooking. Some cultures removed the seeds from the pods & ground them into a flour called pinole, from which a bread was baked.

Mesquite as Food: Mesquite meal has a sweet nutty flavor. This fragrant flour can be used in baking or as a seasoning on food & in drinks.

  • When used in baking, it is used in combination with other flours – the ratio is generally 1 part of mesquite flour for 2 to 3 of cup grain or rice flour. Since the mesquite is sweet, you might want to decrease the sugar in the recipe. Try mesquite in your pancakes, muffins, cakes, corn bread or cookies.
  • As a spice, mesquite meal is great for flavoring steaks, chicken, pork & fish. Sprinkle mesquite on meats & vegetables before grilling; add it your breading for meat & fish. It can be added to vegetable stir-fries, scrambled eggs, biscuits, breads, soups, even ice cream.

For anyone that drinks a morning smoothie or uses a meal replacement drink, try adding one tablespoon of mesquite meal. Hunger won’t return for 4 to 6 hours. Or use mesquite to make a cool summer drink or tea!

  • Summer Mesquite Drink: Add 2 Tbsp finely ground mesquite flour to 1 cup cold water. Stir & let sit for a couple of minutes, then strain, add honey to taste & serve.
  • Mesquite Tea: Place 1 lb. of mesquite pods in 1 gallon of water. Boil pods, at a rolling boil, for 30 minutes. Remove pods & strain. Cool broth & serve over ice.

And a Healthy Food at That! Mesquite meal is low in both carbohydrates and fat, low-glycemic, high in dietary fiber, and naturally sweet. The amount of nutrition supplied by mesquite meal is astounding – it is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, protein & lysine.

According to medical studies, mesquite “is extremely effective in controlling blood sugar levels” in diabetics. The natural sweetness in the pods comes from fructose, which the body can process without insulin. In addition, soluble fibers, such as galactomannin gum, in the seeds and pods slow absorption of nutrients, which results in a flattened blood sugar curve. The gel-forming fiber allows foods to be slowly digested and absorbed over a 4-to-6 hour period, rather than a 1-or-2 hour period (which produces a rapid rise in blood sugar).

Mesquite as Medicine: The medicinal properties of mesquite have long been utilized by many native tribes throughout the southwest United States and northern Mexico. It is most commonly used to treat eye conditions, open wounds and dermatological ailments. Acting as an antacid it can also treat digestive problems. It is used as an antibiotic and has soothing, astringent, and antiseptic properties.

The roots, bark & leaves are cold and dry. They are antifungal, antimicrobial, astringent, antiseptic & antispasmodic. A powder or tea can be made from any of the above materials for athlete’s foot & general fungal infections. This disinfecting wash or powder can be used for mild infections, stings, bites, sores & scrapes.

Leaves & pods can be made into an eye wash for inflammations of all kinds including pink eye. Diarrhea, dysentery, stomach ulcers, dyspepsia & most gastrointestinal inflammations are soothed by the leaves, roots & bark. Poulticed, the leaves were used topically for headaches or even for red ant stings! The young shoots, ground & toasted, were used to dissolve kidney stones.

The white inner bark is used as an intestinal antispasmodic. The bark is also helpful in stopping excessive menstrual bleeding & reducing fevers.

The mesquite gum or resin is the most used element of the mesquite. It is used as an eyewash to treat infection and irritation. It has several dermatological uses, including treatment for sores, wounds, burns, chapped & raw skin, and sunburn. It is used as a restorative after bouts of dysentery, diarrhea, stomach/intestinal distress, and food poisoning. It is used as a soother for stomach/intestinal pain, ulcers, colitis and hemorrhoids. Mesquite gum is also used as a treatment for lice, cough, sore throat, mouth sores, laryngitis, fever reduction, painful teeth & gums.

Easily Improve Your Health With An Alkaline Diet

Because of factors like diet and stress, many people in the industrialized world have bodies that are too acidic and over-burdened with toxins, and so are afflicted with health problems that run the gamut from minor and major skin irritations to depression, chronic fatigue and back pain to arthritis, ulcers, osteoporosis and cancer.

Just consider the following facts:

o Diseased bodies are unbalanced, having a high concentration of acidity in their tissues and the blood. And yet the absence of this balance is rarely noticed by our standard medical tests. So tests may show you are fine, but you feel otherwise.

o The #1 cause of excess acidity is waste products left behind by incomplete digestion. We need hydrochloric acid to digest our food. The more difficult a food is to digest, the more acid is required to digest it.

o In general difficult-to-digest means acid-forming, and easy-to-digest means alkaline.

o Health is easier to achieve and maintain if one consumes four times as much alkaline food as acidic food. When such an ideal ratio is maintained, the body usually has a balanced body chemistry and strong resistance against disease.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: Find out what to eat (and what to avoid) to improve your health! The more alkaline foods are excellent for almost everyone, with certain exceptions like patients of ulcer, allergy and sugar-sensitivity — who may react to sweet fruits or other specific foods.

To help you get started in improving your health, take a look at this list of alkaline and acidic foods:

Alkaline-to-Acid Food List

Lower down foods become less alkaline and more acid-forming (usually more difficult to digest)

MORE ALKALINE: The best foods, also good for detox-diet

Lemon/calamansi water with a pinch of salt

Herb tea

Honey (a little)

Apple cider vinegar

Coconut water

Citric fruit juice

Other fruit juices

Vegetable juice

Lactobacteria drinks without milk

Citric fruits

Juicy fruits

All other fruits including super-ripe banana (except 4 starchy fruits below)

Green leafy vegetables and sea vegetables , sprouts

All other vegetables (except 2 starchy veggies in next category, and 3 listed at bottom of chart)

Extra virgin oil produced without heat friction- best flax oil, hemp oil, then coconut and olive oil

SEMI-ALKALINE: Good for healthy people

Small amount of yogurt just for lactobacteria (among dairy, best is goat’s milk yogurt)

Starchy vegetables/fruits (potato, eggplant, normal banana, avocado, jackfruit, breadfruit)

Nuts (in small quantity, blended or very well-chewed, not fried)

Raw sugar

SEMI-ACID-FORMING: Good for healthy people in smaller quantity

Buckwheat (which is an herb, not a grain)

Mildly sautéed vegetables (better use coconut oil)

Millet (the most alkaline grain)

Other whole grains (including 100% wholegrain bread/rice/noodles, corn, oats, barley)

Fresh tofu

Legumes (e.g. mung beans, lentils, soya, peanut)

ACID-FORMING: A little bit is not too bad for healthy people

Refined grains (including white bread, white rice, white noodles, veggie-meat)

Most “junk foods”

EXTREMELY ACID-FORMING: Eliminate or minimize

Deep fried foods

Eggs (the most difficult to digest food, and also the #1 cause of bad cholesterol)

Notes: 1) Dairy products vary according to personal situation – for some it is good, for others it is bad. 2) Refined sugar, tea and coffee are not difficult to digest, but if one consumes them liberally then they are very acid-forming and also rob the body of needed nutrients. 3) Onion, garlic and mushroom are not difficult to digest, but they heat up the lower glands, and thus very much disturb the emotions.

Gradually increase the alkaline foods in your diet, and see for yourself how your health improves!

Ayurveda Home Remedies For IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a blanket term for a variety of diseases, causing discomfort in the gastro-intestinal tract. It’s a disorder in which the intestines don’t function properly, also commonly referred to as “functional bowel” or “spastic colon.” It is characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any organic cause.

In Ayurveda there is no specific term to describe IBS but can correlate to the classical references of Grahani disease. According to Ayurveda IBS is caused due to improper digestion and stress in life and is categorized under Grahani, as Grahani resembles most of the IBS symptoms. Grahani is the seat of Agni and is called so because of holding up the food. Normally, it holds up the food (till it is digested) and releases it from the side after it is digested. But when it is deranged due to weak digestive fire it releases the ingested material even in unripe condition.

In other words, IBS occurs due to an imbalance in one or more of the 3 doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) due to poor nutrition, poor digestion and imbalance of the nervous system, accumulation of physical and mental stress and lack of immunity.

The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract (GI-Tract), although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system. This condition typically occurs in young adults, especially women. However, symptoms may wax and wane for life.

In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that there are three kinds of “doshas” that are attached to the body and they determine whether one is healthy or not. An imbalance in the “doshas” results in health problems, including IBS and other health conditions. Ayurvedic medicines are very useful in managing the symptoms of IBS.

1. For patients with IBS-C medicines like Kaidaryadi tablet, Ojus tablet, Arogya Vardhini, Shankh Vati, Sanjeevani Vati, Lashunadi Vati and Gandharva Haritaki are extremely useful.

2. For those with IBS-D medicines like Kalasakhadi qwath, Hinguvachadi churna, Kutaj Ghan Vati, Laghu Sutshekhar, Sunthi, Musta, Bilva Avaleha, Panchamrut Parpati, and Bilva are used.

3. Those having mainly indigestion, loss of appetite and abdominal bloating benefit with medicines like Pippalyasavam, Chiruvilwadi qwath tablet,Chitrakadi Vati, Aampachakadi Vati, and Panchakolasav.

4. Medicines containing Kuchila like Agnitundi Rasa and Vishtinduk Vati are useful in improving the overall functioning of the intestines. These also improve the communication between the brain and the intestinal tract, which is believed to be faulty in IBS.

5. Medicines like Brahmi, Jatamansi, Jayphal, Aswagandha and Sarpagandha are used to reduce stress.

6. Triphala capsules: Because of its high nutritional value, triphala uniquely cleanses and detoxifies at the deepest organic levels without depleting the body’s reserves.

7. Ginger (zingiber officinale): In India ginger has been used to aid digestion and treat upset stomach as well as nausea for more than 5000 yrs. This herb is also thought to reduce inflammation.

8. Amla (Indian gooseberry): Amla is the richest natural source of vitamin c. It prevents indigestion and controls acidity. It is one of the supplements used in hyperacidity and liver disorders.

Acid Reflux: The Symptoms To Watch Out For

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition wherein the chyme (the semi-digested food in the stomach) goes up in to the esophagus which is primarily caused by dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincters (LES), abnormal contractions of the esophagus, and delayed emptying of the stomach.

Esophagitis, or inflammation of the lining of the esophagus, may result from GERD. This is primarily due to the reflux of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. Repeated acid reflux would normally irritate the esophagus since the pH of this acid is low enough to cause redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and loss of function (collectively known as inflammation) to the esophagus.

Heartburn results from the reflux of acid due to a dysfunctional LES. It is called a heartburn not because the actual heart burns, but because it imitates the symptoms of a heart attack since the esophagus is just near the heart. Once the acid goes up in to the esophagus, it produces a burning sensation in the chest which usually occurs after meals.

Nausea or the urge to vomit also occurs in GERD since the reflux of chyme from the stomach stimulates the esophagus to push the chyme back up to the mouth.

Regurgitation of chyme or vomiting of undigested food also occurs in GERD which is also due to dysfunctional LES. This, in turn, produces an acid taste in the mouth.

Untreated GERD could cause esophageal ulcers primarily due to the continuous irritation of the esophagus caused by acid reflux. This results to bleeding of the esophagus. If bleeding is not corrected, it can cause shock and death. Esophageal bleeding would lead to hematemesis, or blood in the vomitus, and melena, or dark, tarry stool. Untreated esophageal ulcers will also lead to esophageal perforation, which also results to shock and death if left untreated.

Barrett’s Esophagus can also occur in GERD. This is primarily due to the repeated injury of the esophageal lining caused by acid reflux, which causes metaplasia of the lining. This, however, is said to be a defense mechanism of the esophagus since it will become more resistant to injuries.

The repeated reflux of acid to the esophagus would cause spasm of the larynx resulting to dyspnea and cough. Sometimes, severe acid reflux could also cause aspiration pneumonia due to aspiration of the vomitus which causes lung damage. There are a few instances wherein the presenting manifestation of GERD is cough, rather than the heartburn.

Which Five Element Constitution Is Your Pet?

The Chinese developed the five element theory over 3000 years ago. The theories of Yin/Yang and the five elements are two of the most important principles in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The theories evolved as the ancient Chinese observed the ever changing dynamics of their natural surroundings. They observed similar dynamics existed between the natural world around them and the functioning of the body. This observation evolved into the five-element theory.

The five elements are: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. These elements are all related through a naturally interacting cycle of nurturing and support. It is poetically stated that fire burned and created earthen ash; which gave rise to mountains containing metal; which parted making way for the water; which gave nourishment to the wood; which continuing the cycle kindled the fire.

The five-element theory relates the enhancing, restraining, and promoting interactions which naturally occur between these elements. Each element is represented by a distinctive set of characteristics such as color, emotion, direction, season, as well as body organs and tissues among many others. The properties and relationships which exist between the elements, and their corresponding organs, are utilized to explore and demonstrate medical conditions. The five element interacting relationship helps to guide the traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) practitioner in diagnosing and treating medical problems.

The five-element theory is also utilized to describe human and animal personalities or constitutional type. By identifying the most dominant element constitution of the pet, the TCVM practitioner can address possible imbalances which might occur with that constitutional type. Based on any imbalances detected in the flow of Qi, or energy, the TCVM practitioner can select the proper acupuncture points to stimulate and help restore the body’s own natural balance. These points may be stimulated with dry needle, electro-acupuncture, aqua-acupuncture, laser acupuncture, moxibustion, and other techniques.

Examples of the five element constitutions and disease predispositions are:

The Chinese have utilized acupuncture therapy in both animals and humans for thousands of years. They identified 173 acupoints in animals. Modern research reveals these acupoints are associated with areas of the body which contain a high density of free nerve endings, small arterioles, lymphatics, and mast cells.

The goal of acupuncture therapy is to restore the natural Qi, or energy flow, and allow for the return of balance. TCVM techniques of acupuncture, herbal therapy, food therapy, and Tui-na (a Chinese therapeutic massage-like technique) are utilized in both the prevention and treatment of animal disease. Only licensed veterinarians are eligible to practice acupuncture for animals. It is a very safe medical procedure, which can be performed on a wide variety of animal species.

Dr. Carson received her DVM from the University of Florida and recently completed the acupuncture internship program at the UF Veterinary Medical Center. She is certified in both acupuncture and tui-na TCVM techniques by the Chi Institute. She currently operates an equine acupuncture practice in Orlando, Florida and also practices small animal integrative medicine in Orlando and Lake Mary, Florida. She can be contacted at

7 Health Benefits of Cyanidin 3-Glucoside

Cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) is a water-soluble plant compound that is part of the anthocyanins category. It plays an active role in producing the dark color pigments in a variety of fruits and flowers. This natural substance is primarily sourced from fruits and vegetable with dark skins such as purple potatoes, blueberries, plums, blackcurrants, and black rice.

Most people already get a certain amount of cyanidin 3-glucoside in their diet, but this is usually at a negligible amount. It is possible to increase the intake of this substance by making a change in the diet or taking it in supplement form.

Here are seven of the potential health benefits for increasing the intake of cyanidin 3-glucoside:

The rich antioxidant content of this compound helps the body neutralize the build up of free radicals. Free radicals develop when oxygen is able to interact with specific molecules. By neutralizing the free radical damage, it is possible to minimize the risk of serious disease such as certain cancers (skin, prostate, lung, and colon) and heart disease.

The risk of atherosclerosis is lowered with an increased intake of cyanidin 3-glucoside. Atherosclerosis is a condition that relates to the build up of plaque on the artery wall which prevents the proper blood flow throughout the system. If the artery walls are restricted too much because of the hard plaque this can increase the risk of suffering from a heart attack.

It has the ability to help suffers of type-2 diabetes because of its ability to increase insulin sensitivity and reduce glucose levels.

Foods rich in cyanidin 3-glucoside can help to increase the body’s ability to fight-off inflammation, which has the negative effect of causing serious health conditions.

Eye health

This plant compound has the ability to regenerate rhodopsin, which is essential to let the retina absorb light. A benefit of this is the ability to improve night vision. Plus, the rich antioxidant content is believed to have a positive effect of slowing the development of age related eye diseases such as macular degeneration.

The powerful antioxidant properties in cyanidin 3-glucoside make it useful to tissues by slowing the aging process, fighting off DNA damage, and preventing the formation of cancerous cells by encouraging apoptosis, which is the programmed death of diseased cells.

Fat loss

For the bodybuilder there is the potential to increase muscle gain and reduce fat gain because this compound has the ability to improve insulin sensitivity, which is useful for providing more carbohydrate calories and protein to muscle cells.

What is the Definition of Cardiovascular Health and Why is Cardiovascular Health Important?

What is the definition of cardiovascular health?

Cardiovascular health is a perfectly functioning heart and connected blood vessels that include, arteries, veins, capillaries and valves. All these put together form the cardiovascular system in the body and together they are responsible for transporting blood and nutrients to the various parts of the body and carrying back waste products from the organs to other organs to get the blood cleaned.

Cardiovascular health is the condition of all the components of the cardiovascular system(CV). It is important to keep the cardiovascular system healthy in order to live long and healthy. Without the proper functioning of this system the vital organs will begin to malfunction and will soon fail. Death will occur within days if not hours.

The heart is the main component of the CV system. It is responsible for pumping blood to all the parts of the body. It pumps de-oxygenated blood to the lungs where the blood is oxygenated and then pumps this oxygenated blood to the other parts where the blood picks up nutrients and delivers them to the body organs that need them. The blood also carries impurities from the organs to the liver and the kidneys where the blood is purified.

Why is cardiovascular health important?

It is important to exercise the heart to strengthen it and keep it in a state that can be best described as the best of health. This is achieved by making the heart pump rapidly for a few minutes each day. The best way to exercise the cardiovascular system is through cardiovascular exercises. These exercises are designed to male the heart pump fast and furiously strengthening the whole cardiovascular system in the process.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

In Upton Sinclairs’, “The Jungle,” an extended family of Lithuanian descent, immigrate to turn of the 20th century America with the good intentions of working hard and prospering. After settling into the meat packing district of Chicago and finding jobs, the family quickly finds themselves brutally repressed by the packers they work for. Blood is a recurring metaphor both in the stockyards and in the eventual deaths of most of the family members. Upon arriving in Packington the family of Jurgis Rudkus take pride in thinking they have achieved the American dream by committing their life’s savings into the purchase of a home. But their pride is shattered upon discovering that they have been swindled into buying a home of very poor workmanship. After years of struggling to survive, Jurgis discovers an alternative political system. Socialism offers Jurgis the opportunity to rise up against his oppressors.

It was not long after Jurgis had his first job in the killing beds of Durham’s, as a sweeper of the bloody entrails of steer carcasses, that he began to understand that workers are faced with dangerous work conditions and poor labor practices. Stagnant air in the summer, bitter cold in the winter, poor lighting conditions, and no washrooms combine to make the stockyards a dangerous place to work. But the bosses are not interested in the comfort of their workers. Instead, they engage in practices such as “speeding up the gang,” where men are worked at a fever pitch. The work pace was set by the bosses, whose job it was to be sure there was never a moment of rest for the men. If any man cannot keep up with the intense pace he would quickly be replaced by one of the hundreds waiting outside. One can relate the speeding up of workers metaphorically to the rushing through of the workers lives, without dignity and without reward, existing only for the benefit of the stockyard owners. Sinclair uses conditions such as these in the stockyards effectively with hyperbole or exaggeration.

The Rudkus family found out the hard way that the entire premise of Packingtown was to swindle newly arriving immigrants for every cent they possessed and for every fiber of their being. They learned how agents of Packintown back in their hometown of Lithuania tricked them. The agents where sent to cities and towns of Europe to recruit unsuspecting people with promises of work and high wages at the stockyards. But the worst swindle of all was how the family was betrayed by a fast talking agent into the purchase of what they where told was a new home worth fifteen hundred dollars to build. The agent concealed the fact that the house was fifteen years old and only cost five hundred dollars to build. Here again, Sinclair uses hyperbole to illustrate the poor quality of the house, bad plumbing, leaky weatherboards, and no insulation from the cold. It was amongst a row of houses built by a company that engaged in swindling poor people. The agent also concealed the fact that they must pay monthly interest on the home. The revelation of these facts shatters the family’s sense of security and stability.

Death and blood is constant in the stockyards as it is within the Rudkus family. Jurgis father Dede Antanas Rudkus developed a cough while working in the cold and dark cellar of the stockyards. The cough worsened forcing Antanas to spit blood till eventually the old man found himself on his death bed suffering from tuberculosis. Antanas began to hemorrhage from the mouth while experiencing his many coughing fits. Then one morning Antanas was found cold and stiff, he had died lungs filled with blood. The death of his father was painful to Jurgis but not nearly as painful as the death of his wife.

Ona Rudkus was worn out do to malnourishment, harsh work conditions in the stockyards and forced prostitution at the hands of her evil forelady. Also, Ona had developed a cough like the one that killed Antanas. Her pregnancy with the couple’s second child was too much for her both physically and mentally. Ona was not under a doctors care when time came for the delivery of the baby, only a hastily called midwife. Ona moaned in agony during the long painful delivery. The midwife did all she could but the delivery was unsuccessful. The baby died and later Ona also past away. The midwife explained to a horrified Jurgis that the baby came with one arm first. The woman was smeared with blood on her hands, arms, face, and clothing. One can compare the woman’s appearance to strongly resembling a worker in the killing fields after a long day of all-consuming work. Here, Sinclair suggests in hyperbolic fashion that people die as cattle die in the bloody stockyards.

After the loss of his wife, child, and unborn child, Yurgis finds himself vulnerable, desperate, and morally degraded. But he stumbles upon a way to fight back, a way to rise up against his oppressors. Yurgis discovers an alternative political system called Socialism. Locally, the mission of Socialism is to teach and organize against the stockyard owners. On a wider scale, the mission of Socialism is to break down the class structure in society and distribute the wealth amongst the masses. Yurgis now has a cause, he now has a purpose in life but most of all he has something he can offer to his Socialist comrades. For Yurgis has the ability to share his detailed knowledge of the health atrocities being committed in the stockyards by the packers. He can enlighten others that the nation is being endangered by the very food that is intended to nourish. Meat produced in the stockyards is a metaphorical poison. Yurgis newfound political persuasion of Socialism offers a metaphorical salvation to him, other workers, and to society as a whole.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Cancer of the ovary, a disease affecting one of both of the ovaries, is one of the most serious and under-recognized ailments affecting women. In United States, it is considered as the fifth among the most fatal gynecologic cancers (affecting the female reproductive organs). It is said that in every 57 women, one may be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and almost half of those women diagnosed with the said cancer may die in a span of five years.

Ovarian Cancer: Overview

Ovarian cancer is characterized by the malignant growth of one or of the two ovaries. The cells in the ovary multiply progressively and abnormally to the point that they can no longer be controlled. As a result, excessive tissues start to form tumors, which may be benign or malignant. The malignant ones are those that cause cancer.

The growth of the tumor may not necessarily start from the ovary or the ovaries, but may have spread to the ovary from other parts of the body, oftentimes the breast. The malignant tumor in the ovary may likewise spread to other parts of the body. The most common cases of ovarian cancer arise from epithelial cancer, which affect the epithelial cells (cells found in the tissues covering surfaces of the ovary).

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

It is important for women to be aware of the nature and symptoms of ovarian cancer as this deadly cancer can affect women of any age. However, women face higher risk of ovarian cancer as she gets older, particularly after she reaches the age of fifty.

Most of the time, the symptoms of ovarian cancer do not show up until the cancer is widespread or in its advanced stage. This makes a woman at higher risk since it can be too late before she may be able to detect symptoms of ovarian cancer. Moreover, there are only very few symptoms of the cancer, which may be mistaken as symptoms of other health conditions.

The very first symptom of ovarian cancer is vague abdominal discomfort and bloating, which is caused by the excess fluid in the abdominal cavity. One always feels full even when she has not eaten much. As time passes by the swelling of the abdomen intensifies that some of your clothes may no longer fit you. Usually, it is because of this unusual swelling (way different from a woman’s monthly water retention) that most women go to the doctor for check up.

Bloating is accompanied by digestive disturbances, unexplained changes in the bowel habits and urinary patterns. There are frequent trips to the bathroom even in the absence of a urinary tract infection or other health problems. One may feel nauseous, very tired and she may feel like vomiting at times. She may also feel discomfort and pain during an intercourse.

Pain and swelling in the pelvic area is also noticeable upon closer physical examination. This is due to the swelling in the pelvis. In very rare instances, a woman in her postmenopausal stage experiences abnormal bleeding.

Other vague and non-specific symptoms of ovarian cancer include back and leg pain, loss of appetite, undernourished appearance, weight gain or weigh loss, and unusual bleeding in the vagina (heavier and longer than the usual menstrual bleeding).

Detecting Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

Screening is a way to detect the symptoms of ovarian cancer. The earlier the patient is screened, the better so as to decrease the mortality and morbidity of ovarian cancer. One of the most effective ways to detect the cancer in its early stage is through pelvic and rectal exam.
