Ichthammol Ointment Treats Boils and Infections Of The Skin

Ichthammol is a foul reeking ammoniated coal tar product made from shale rock. Ammonium bituminosulfonate which is just another word for Ichthammol is extracted from sulfur rich oil shale stone by a action identified as dry distillation. In case you are wondering what is dry distillation, it a process of heating a solid to create a gas which is then condensed into liquid or a solid as in the case of oil shale rock used to create Ichthammol also called black drawing salve or ichthyol, Albichthyol.

Ichthammol ointment is not 100% pure Ammonium bituminosulfonate, it is in reality made up of about 10% or 20 % Ammonium bituminosulfonate mixed with several herb, oils or waxes. This black pungent paste has a numerous uses as a natural cure for a variety of skin injuries and conditions. Please do not confuse or associate Black drawing salve with some of the rumors you might have learned about it being a topical cancer cure. While there is many positive anecdotal evidence to backup the claims there is no institutional evidence to support this kind of efficacy and those salves are of a different concoction and are of as corrosive nature. Ichthammol ointment can be utilized to draw out splinters, relieve painful insect bites and stings, treat boils, carbuncles, abscesses, mild fungal infections of the skin such as athletes foot, eczema or psoriasis and acne, as well as a treatment for poison ivy exposure. It is used also as a soothing ointment for animals with wounds, dry hooves, inflammations or skin irritations.

There are no identified detrimental side effects by using drawing salve ichthammol ointment even when used by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. Neither is it known to affect other medicines. However a protective covering should be placed over the applied area to avoid staining clothes, cloths and bed linen. This soil can be extremely difficult to remove. Avoid physical contact of ichthammol salve with mucous membranes, such as the eyes. It should never be taken internally. It should not be used in deep wounds. Avoid use if you are hypersensitive to any of the elements

Ichthammol ointment 20% is usually recommended as this is considered the most effectual preparation. However, there is a weaker preparation of 10% Ammonium bituminosulfonate. When using ichthammol ointment clean the area first with warm and soapy water of wipe the area with either hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohols solution. Then apply a dab of ichthammol ointment to the area and cover with a bandage and leave over night repeat as frequently as is needed to remedy the condition. However if the condition prevails for too long e.g over three days seek the help of a physician. The salve can be applied 1-3 times a day, or as directed by your physician.

"I Can Only Wear Gold Jewelry" – The Truth About Jewelry Allergies

“I can only wear gold jewelry, everything else breaks me out.” How many times did I hear that exact phrase from my mother when I was a child? Every time I would give her jewelry that was her response.

Why does everything but gold break my mother out? Is that statement even true? When I started designing jewelry over a year ago I decided to find out. I wanted to design jewelry for my mom that she could wear without fear of a breakout. Now I am going to let you in on what I have discovered.

My mother, like many people, develops contact dermatitis when her skin comes in contact with some types of jewelry. The dermatitis is a result of an allergic reaction to the nickel found in many types of jewelry. Nickel allergies are very common. One out of every seven people is likely to suffer from a nickel allergy. More women tend to suffer from nickel allergies than men. However this may be attributed to the fact that women tend to wear more jewelry than men and are therefore more likely to be exposed to skin contact with nickel.

Now that I knew what was causing my mother’s breakout, I had to find out what types of jewelry metals did not contain nickel.

First I looked at gold jewelry. Generally speaking, yellow gold (above 14 karat) will not cause an allergic reaction. However white gold may. White gold alloys contain nickel and other “white” metals to produce its silver coloring. One out of every nine people will react to the nickel in white gold.

Another for of gold jewelry is gold filled or “GF” jewelry. Gold filled jewelry metal is created when a base metal is coated with a layer of gold. Gold filled differs from gold plated by the amount of gold applied. The layer used in gold filled jewelry is typically 50 to 100 time thicker that the layer used to coat gold plated products.

Next I looked at silver jewelry. For those who are nickel sensitive, fine silver and sterling silver are great choices for “white” metals.

Fine silver is by definition 99.9% pure silver. Jewelry is generally not made of fine silver because the metal is extremely soft and does not withstand normal wear and tear well.

Typically silver jewelry is made of sterling silver. Sterling silver is by definition 92.5% pure silver. Typically the remaining 7.5% metal is made up of copper. Copper is infused to harden the silver and make it more durable. Since copper is the normal metal used, sterling silver is a great metal for nickel allergic people. You can typically distinguish sterling silver by a “925” mark found on the jewelry. This is common on manufactured pieces, but may not be present on artisan jewelry.

Some other metals that are considered safe for people with nickel allergies are:

Copper – Copper jewelry is generally considered pure and not mixed with nickel or nickel alloys.

Platinum – Platinum jewelry contains 95% platinum and 5% of a secondary metal typically iridium.

Titanium – Titanium jewelry is both hypoallergenic and durable. It is a highly recommended metal for those who suffer from nickel allergies.

Since I have given you a list of safe metals, I thought I would also give you a list of metal terms to watch out for when you are shopping for jewelry.

Fashion or costume jewelry typically contains base metals that include nickel.

German silver or nickel silver is a metal to stay away from where jewelry is concerned. German silver does not contain any silver. The silver refers to the silver coloration of the metal. The color is derived from a combination of nickel, zinc, lead, and tin found within the alloy.

Surgical or stainless steel – Surgical grade stainless steel is made to be in the human body. However, the steel alloy contains between eight and twelve percent nickel. I have heard varying reports as to how safe this metal is for people with nickel allergies. Since the steel alloy does contain nickel, I would tend to avoid it, but some people swear by it.

If you do buy a piece of jewelry and are concerned that it may contain nickel, commercial test kits are available online. These kits contain chemicals that react in the presence of nickel.

Doing a little research can prevent a nickel allergy attack and still allow you to wear any fashion.

Detox Headache: Is There Any Relief?

A detox headache is the most common side effect of a detox diet. Such diets have existed as long as the “grapefruit diet,” which dates back as far as the 1930s. The purpose of this severe type of diet is to reduce the harmful effects caused by consumption of toxins in the food you normally eat.

What is a detox diet?

The usual diet lasts for a period of two days to three weeks, and consists of limited consumption of food in both variety and quantity. Furthermore, you will be required to eliminate caffeine from your diet, and to increase the amount of water that you consume on a daily basis.

What causes a detox headache?

When you stop eating the things your body is used to getting, this can cause headaches. The first few days of such a diet can be very challenging for some people, as they have to eliminate things that they love to eat and drink from their diet. Although these foods are not generally referred to as “drugs,” you will still experience a withdrawal effect when those foods are no longer in your system. Headaches are the most common withdrawal effect.

Caffeine withdrawal

When you go on a detox diet, you will need to completely eliminate caffeine. If you are a lover of coffee and drink a cup two to three times each day, when you are going through caffeine withdrawal you will most likely suffer from a headache. This was documented in 1990, when a British medical journal published a study which concluded that one of the most common side effects of caffeine withdrawal is headaches. Other caffeine withdrawal side effects include migraine attacks and irritability.

Low blood sugar

Detox diets require you to consume a large quantity of water, and severely reduce your calorie intake. Suddenly cutting back on calories results in low blood sugar levels, which can lead to a headache. Furthermore, when you suddenly reduce the amount of calories that you consume, this slows your metabolism, and causes your body to enter starvation mode. If you suffer from epilepsy or diabetes, having low blood sugar will be dangerous for your health.

Also known as water intoxication, hyponatremia is one of the most common causes of a detox headache. According to the BBC, in 2008, a British woman experienced severe neurological side effects from hyponatremia, after consuming too much water as indicated by her diet.

Consuming too much water can result in diluting your blood and flooding your organs and cells with water as the sodium levels in your body are reduced. When this happens, the cells of your brain can swell, and cause an increase in pressure in your skull, causing a headache. Two other possible side effects of hyponatremia are breathing problems and seizures.

Headache relief

Drinking water is perhaps the best way to get relief from a detox headache, if you don’t overdo it and lower your blood sugar too much. Water has the ability to flush your system and eliminate the symptoms that are causing your headaches. You should also start eliminating foods you are addicted to before starting your detox diet.

My Depressed Husband Says He Doesn’t Love Me – Tips and Advice That Might Help

I often hear from wives who feel very strongly that their husband’s depression is the reason for at least some of the serious problems in their marriage. Often, these wives tell me that their husbands have projected their depression onto the marriage and have told or hinted to the wives that they don’t love them anymore and are considering a break, separation, or divorce. This is extremely frustrating to the wives who find it very obvious that his depression is clouding many of the perceptions that he has about all areas of his life – including their marriage and the way that he feels about them.

Unfortunately, often when the wives attempt to approach their husbands about this, the husband is not at all receptive to what she has to say. They often respond with things like “it’s you and the marriage that make me depressed. My mental state is not the reason our marriage is in trouble, but the state of our marriage most certainly makes me more depressed.”

This can be a very unfortunately situation. The wives often know that they are right about this, but the more they push it, the more the husband withdraws and pulls away. Unfortunately, being right doesn’t amount to much if he’s not going to come to see things your way. And, pushing your own perceptions onto him when he doesn’t agree is likely only going to make the situation worse. He may eventually come to see you as something very undesirable that he wants to escape as a matter of self preservation. So, in the following article, I will discuss what I’ve seen to be the most effective way to deal with a depressed husband whose mental status is contributing to him telling you that he doesn’t love you anymore.

Depressed People Can Think That They Don’t Love Anything Or Anyone (And This Includes Themselves:) Many wives intuitively know this, but I feel the need to mention it because validation can be a very reassuring thing. Depression can very much cloud your entire world view and can contribute to your seeing reality in a very warped and one sided way.

Everything looks bleak. Every one appears to be detrimental to your being alone with your misery. And, there are times when you don’t feel anything – much less love. These things don’t mean that your husband no longer loves you. It just means that his depression keeps him from feeling much of anything and this clouds his world view and perceptions.

Depressed People Can Be Resistant To Seeing Reality If It Makes Them Change Too Abruptly. Always Respond With This In Mind: You and I both know that your husband’s mental state could very well be clouding his judgments and perceptions. And, it’s so tempting to repeatedly remind him of this. What you have to understand though is that it’s unlikely that he’s going to agree with what you saying. People who are depressed build walls around themselves that can be hard to break through, especially if you’re asking him to abandon or to deeply examine his believes.

It can be more effective to just proceed along as though his beliefs are his reality. This can be frustrating, but it keeps you from wasting time and from pushing him further away by arguing with him even when he isn’t going to change his mind. As difficult as it may be, it’s usually more effective to accept that this what he believes right now and to go from there.

Approaching His Mental State From A Place Of Love Rather Than Judgment: People who suffer from depression can be very defensive. There’s a sense of shame about this, so you will usually have better results if you approach him as someone who hurts because he’s hurting (rather than as someone who hurts because he doesn’t love you.) Tell him that it’s obvious that he’s struggling and that you want to be his safe place to fall rather than someone who is making things worse.

Don’t dwell on his assertions that he doesn’t love you. This may well change as his mental state improves. Instead, focus on trying to help him get to a better place. Sometimes, this may mean professional help. Other times, time, support, and loving patience can bring about some improvements. Often, when you husband sees that you’re not going to debate with him but instead want to help him, the atmosphere around this issue will begin to shift and will allow you to begin to gain some ground.

Deciding When To Broach The Martial Issues When You Know That The Depression Is The Prevalent Issue: People often ask me if they should address the marital and affection issues at the same time that they are addressing the depression. This really depends upon how dire both situations are and a counselor is much better equipped to answer this than I am. But, I can tell you that often one thing will often affect the other. Often, if you can improve one of these issues, the other will fall into place much easier. But you shouldn’t allude that one thing depends on the other. Always try to approach this from a place of love and support.

Unfortunately, you can’t force your husband to seek or receive help. But, you can control yourself and your own actions. You can make it clear to your husband that your will support him and be his safe place to fall throughout this process. And you can obtain what you need to help and support yourself. If he resists counseling, nothing says that you can’t go alone or also educate yourself.

Often, if you can make some small changes and show him that you’re making an effort, he might begin to come around and be a bit more receptive, especially when he sees that you’re not making him make any painful changes or concessions by himself.

Having a depressed husband who claims he doesn’t love you can be devastating. But, you have to realize that what you’re hearing is often his mental status talking rather than his true feelings. If you can approach him from a loving place and gently get some assistance that will help both of you, then you can often see some improvement in both the depression and in the way that he claims he feels about you.

Overcome Your Fear of Funeral Homes in 5 Easy Steps

There are many people that are deathly afraid of funeral homes. They can barely stand to drive past one and having to plan out a funeral for someone else can make them hyperventilate. It is perfectly normal to have a fear of mortuaries. If this is something that has been bothering you there is no more need to fear. Here is how to get rid of the fear in just five simple steps. At the very least, these steps will bring you some relief. People do not like to be overrun and driven by fear. Follow these easy steps to master your phobia.

The first step is to determine in your mind that the fear you are suffering is going to be gone. If you do not actively choose to get rid of your fear then no remedy will work. The funeral of the person that past away is important to you. If you are the one responsible for planning the funeral, it is an even more important event for you. Decide now that you are not going to let this or any other fears stop you from doing what you know you must.

The next step is a bit more complicated. You have to try and figure out what it is about it that bothers you. Some people may find this an easy task, but that is not true for everybody. There are many people who do not know how to associate reasons with their fears. If this is a problem for you, sit down with a pen and sheet of paper and write down everything that comes to mind when you think about funeral homes.

The third step is to gain the support of someone that knows you well and whom you trust. You may need them to help you out as you work to stamp out your fear. Ask them to go with you to a funeral home then take a trip to your local parlor. Let them hold your hand if need be. Take your time when there and breathe deeply when you begin feeling nervous. Remember that overcoming this fear may take some time and requires persistence. Practice visiting funeral homes often until the fear subsides

Similar to the third step, the fourth step requires you to contact a mental health expert. Do not be embarrassed by this step. They can also do a lot to help you overcome the fear. There is a good chance that such services are offered for free in your local area. These experts can help you with such things as meditation and hypnosis.

Finally, turn to the funeral home itself. Being that you have a fear of funeral parlors you may be unaware of the fact that directors of funeral homes are often licensed to give grief counseling. As such, they can help you with your fear; especially since your fear evolves around their workplace. Tell them that you are having this problem and also that you need to plan out a funeral. They can help you both to deal with your fear and learn more about funeral homes so that you will not feel so afraid.

The Amino Acid, Lysine, Can Help Anxiety Naturally

Anxiety is the most common form of mental illness in the United States, surpassing even depression. It is estimated that 18 percent of the population suffers from some form of anxiety, which totals over 40 million adults. The cause of many anxiety disorders is virtually unknown, and prescription drugs for anxiety often come with unwanted side effects. Anxiety is often referred to as the “fight or flight” hormone, which is usually associated with high levels of cortisol.

The human body needs the amino acid L-lysine to live, and it is considered safe and non-toxic. But for certain groups of people, particularly those with cardiovascular disease and elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels it is recommended to consult with a doctor before starting a supplement program, because it might have a tendency to affect those and related health conditions.

Overall, L-lysine has great potential as a treatment option for people with mild or chronic anxiety. The amino acid has no known side effects, unlike many other anxiety medications, and is readily available in vitamin supplements and food sources. The findings from various studies might mean that L-lysine plays a significant role in lowering anxiety levels in those known to have a deficiency of the amino acid, or in those who suspect they have a low dietary intake of it. The findings of many medical studies also indicate that the amino acid is effective at eliminating stress-induced anxiety and trait anxiety. Experts say anxiety disorders that lysine could play a role in alleviating include:

• (GAD) Generalized Anxiety Disorder

• (OCD) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

• Panic Disorder

• (PTSD) Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

• (SAD) Social Anxiety Disorder

Another health-related issue can also be treated with this essential amino acid, and that is in cases of herpes, oral and genital. Taking dosages of Lysine, both as an internal supplement, and topically applied to the affected areas prior to or during a herpes outbreak, it can help shorten and lessen the outbreak.

To ensure you are getting a sufficient amount of L-lysine, take it as a supplement or obtain it from different food sources. Some of the major food sources include:

• Red meat, pork and poultry

• Cheese (especially parmesan cheese)

• Fish (mainly cod and sardines)

• Nuts

• Eggs

• Soybeans

• Spirulina

• Fenugreek seed

You can also take the amino acid in vitamin form, which would be recommended for people who are vegetarians or eat very few animal products.

L-lysine has great potential as a possible treatment option for many Americans with occasional or chronic anxiety. It has no known side effects, unlike the majority of anxiety medications, and is easily available in vitamin supplements and sources. Shedding that fear and those attacks, or at-least lessening them, could be as easy as adding a supplement or multiple-amino acid supplement to your diet.

There is no need to continue to suffer.

Menoquil Review – An Effective Menopausal Relief Option?

As women approach menopause, the warnings signs set in – irregular periods, night sweats, hot flashes and psychological maladies such as irritability and low sex drive. Standard HRT treatments have commonly been shown to provide only short-term relief from menopausal symptoms, often increasing the incidence of heart attacks, strokes and even breast cancer. A refreshingly all-natural alternative called Menoquil, manufactured by Pharmaxa Labs, is a daily, single-dose treatment that claims to rival HRT. But what is Menoquil?

Menoquil is an exciting option for those going through menopause because it contains only naturally-derived herbal and botanical extracts, while still offering the same benefits as hormone-replacement therapies. Its key equivalent ingredients are phytoestrogen compounds and black cohosh extract, which have been respectively proven to boost energy levels and reduce hot flashes (in the same was as HRT’s transdermal estradiol), but Menoquil’s entire cocktail of botanical extracts work harmoniously as a menopausal remedy to support the body’s hormones, rather than a comparatively invasive HRT treatment.

Menoquil contains soy isoflavone proteins which are also claimed to relieve hot flashes, but their effectiveness in other areas has been tested with mixed results; some studies have shown that isoflavones have little to no effect on increasing cognitive function.

Among the rest of the extracts, Chaste Berry provides mild pain relief, in particular to targeted menopausal pain such as breast tenderness and edema; Red Clover Extract has been proven to possess properties similar to HRT’s low levels of estrogen and thus helps to relieve night sweats and also acts as an insomnia aid. This combination of all-natural, botanical extracts are a promising change, but there’s something to be said about the optimization of synthetic compounds and their effectiveness compared to botanical compounds which have been subjected to little research concerning their use in menopause.

Menoquil is comprised of Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Calcium, Phosphorate (as Calcium Phosphorate), Red Clover Flower Powder, Red Clover Powdered Extract, Green Tea Leaf Powdered Extract, Guggul Gum Resin Powdered Extract, Chaste Berry Powder, Dong Quai Powder, Soy Isoflavones 40%, Wild Yam Root Powder, Black Cohosh Root Powder, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit Powder, Bioperine.

Concerning the psychological effects of menopause, Wild Yam Root promotes production of sex hormone-binding globulin and serum estrogen, reducing vaginal dryness but also boosting a low sex drive. Green Leaf Tea Extract boosts the immune system and acts as a powerful antioxidant, but also works with Guggul Gum Resin to stimulate thyroid activity, helping to quell excess appetite cravings. The addition of calcium promotes positive bone health to prevent osteoporosis.

Based on the ingredients in the Menoquil formulation it can be said that the product may: reduce stress and irritability, relieve vaginal dryness, increase sex drive, relieve hot flashes and night sweats, curb excess food cravings, relieve insomnia, soothe breast tenderness, relieve edema and headaches and increase bone health. Overall, Menoquil is a viable option for those opting to use a natural botanical product over a synthetic medication.

Compulsive Skin Picking of the Cuticles – Why Do People Do It?

Compulsive skin picking of the cuticles is one of the many types of compulsive skin picking (CSP) disorders and has a variety of possible underlying causes. Most people with this condition are simply carrying out a habit – the cuticle is unique in that it is one of the few areas of the human body that can be easily manipulated or played with. In most cases, little or no damage is done.

However, in extreme cases the person may pick deeply at the cuticles, particularly where they end and meet the sides of the fingers and thumbs. This practice is much more likely to lead to tearing of live skin, resulting in pain and bleeding. You may know of or have met someone like this and have seen the open sores and wounds, not just on a single finger, but more often on all of them.

Why Would Someone Be Compelled To Harm Themselves?

In most cases of picking of the skin there are often some short term pleasures or gains, for example in scab picking. However, in extreme cuticle picking the person will experience far more pleasure than pain, even in the short term. So why would someone want to do this to themselves?

In some cases this is simply habitual behavior that the person themselves cannot explain. The intangible satisfaction is much greater in magnitude than the pain endured.

In others this may be a result of some underlying anxiety. For example, in cases of extreme anxiety the person may pick their cuticles much as another might bite their nails. In other cases, this can even be a form of self harm similar to “cutting”.

Other Types Of Skin Picking

Although significant, compulsive skin picking of the cuticles is actually one of the least observed forms of CSP. More commonly seen are picking of scabs, blackheads, calluses and ingrown hairs.

The underlying causes of all types of CSP are varied in much the same way as for picking of the cuticles.

For example, someone may pick at a callus as they enjoy the tactile nature of the act and even the sound emitted. Another person may pick excessively at an ingrown hair in the exaggerated belief that others may notice it if it is not picked at. Paradoxically, all types of CSP usually result in greater disfigurement than had they been left alone.

Treatments For Picking Of The Cuticles

One easy option to try is the use of bitter tasting nail solution that is more commonly used for people who obsessively bite their nails. This can help in the many cases where people actually pick at the cuticles using their teeth.

If it is determined that the picking has an underlying anxiety related cause, drug therapy may be considered. The more recent class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are normally prescribed over the older class known as tricyclics.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is also often prescribed. This is a well known field of therapy that seeks to change abnormal behavior and has proved highly effective in the past for obsessive compulsive disorders. For similar reasons, hypnotherapy has also proved useful.

Top 10 Reasons to Use Argan Oil – Other Than to Fight Wrinkles

Argan oil is one of the hottest ingredients and standalone products in the beauty industry. But did you know that it can be used for more than just fighting wrinkles?

This moroccan miracle oil, as it is often called, contains 80% essential fatty acids (to help reduce inflammation), as well as squalene (to help keep our skin soft), phytosterols (to help protect collagen) and phenolic compounds (to guard against free radicals), making it one of the most versatile beauty products for those of who like to keep our beauty routines simple or who want to want to remain budget conscious.

So, without further ado, here are the top 10 reasons to use argan oil, other than to reduce lines and wrinkles (which, by the way, it does beautifully):

1. Soften dry, cracked skin Argan oil has a very high content of unsaturated fatty acids, even more so than shea butter, making it the perfect all-over face, hand and body moisturizer.

2. Help prevent stretch marks Simply use as you would any other stretch mark cream. The oil absorbs extremely easily and doesn’t leave any oily residue.

3. Lighten scars With regular use, argan oil can help lighten scars and acne marks.

4. Balance sebum production Although an oil, it is non-comedogenic, meaning that it does not clog pores.

5. Relieve eczema and psoriasis Argan oil is one of the world’s richest natural sources of vitamin E, so is a great treatment for a variety of skin conditions.

6. Soften cuticles Leave on overnight for best results.

7. Condition hair With its great moisturizing abilities, this oil makes a great intensive hair conditioner and can even be used to help split ends.

8. Alleviate dry, itchy scalp Apply to scalp and wrap head in a warm towel for 30 minutes or overnight to soothe irritation.

9. Soothe irritated baby skin A great alternative to chemical-based baby oils.

10. Use as a culinary oil Add flavor and health benefits when you drizzle argan oil over fish and vegetables (it’s not suitable for heating though).

3 Basketball Training Methods You Shouldn’t Use

I’ve seen too many players end up running in circles with their basketball training, working their tail off all summer long only to find out that they didn’t improve at all once the season rolled around. In my case, I ended up with torn cartilage in my hip and a bad taste in my mouth when I trained that way. It was largely due to crappy training methods that really don’t do anything to develop your game, just waste your time and energy.

Let’s throw the hammer down on some of these useless training methods right now.

1.) Band resisted basketball training

For some reason basketball players love bands. I’m fine with that. They are actually really useful in a lot of situations, like in the weight room and for tractioning injuries (if you’ve never tried band traction after an ankle sprain, you’re seriously missing out.)

Just leave them in the weight room or therapy room when you’re done.

Just wanted to make it clear that I’m not talking about that. Louie Simmons can relax. It’s all good.

Band resisted basketball training involves taking a band and attaching it to your waist and training on the court while being resisted by the band. You’ve probably seen it before. The guys who do this claim it develops “explosive power.”

Let’s get clear on this: there are 3 ways to develop explosive power:

– Get stronger

– Learn to express that strength faster (uh, get faster)

– Become more efficient in your movement.

So what do bands do?

Make you stronger? No. Do nothing but band training for a few months then step inside the squat rack. I’m betting you can’t squat two dripping wet socks.

Make you faster at expressing your strength? Hell no. The bands are slowing you down. Train fast to be fast.

Make you more efficient? For the newer Renegades, this basically means getting your body in alignment for maximum power and then mastering the movement you are trying to become better at. Wrapping a band around your waist and impeding your moves on the court is pretty much going to do the opposite of that.

The answer is none of the above. Chuck the bands and use some real basketball training methods.

2.) Repetitive movement jumping programs

I think everyone knows exactly what I’m talking about with this one, so let me just call it “repetitive motion jumping programs” and get away while still being somewhat “politically correct.”

With all of the incredible information online, I shouldn’t have to back this one up. Its obvious enough already these programs don’t work. Save yourself a LOT of time and money and keep it simple: Get stronger, practice jumping and play your sport. Seriously, that’s all it takes.

3.) Tennis ball dribbling drills

These are all the rage these days, for really, really good reason:

They look cool as hell.

A couple summers ago I spent something like $200 on a set of DVD’s from a well known basketball training “guru.” Pretty much every single DVD mentioned these drills, you know, tossing a tennis ball in the air and making a move before catching it with the other hand.

Looked pretty cool at the time, so I took ’em to the lab for a test. Didn’t do anything for me, didn’t do anything for the point guard I was working with at the time, so I threw them out.

A couple months later, I saw a well known basketball coach in my local area training someone, and he seemed to be using these tennis ball drills the ENTIRE workout. That motivated me to give them another try. Hit ’em hard for 8 weeks – still nothing.

Since that time, I’ve tried using them with a number of guards and no one has seen any improvement by using them. Just wasted time and a ton of funny looks from the other guys in the gym.

Now, I’m all for funny looks and looking crazy to “the regulars,” don’t get me wrong. But these drills suck. Don’t waste any more time on them.

Avoid these 3 basketball training methods at all costs and you will be ahead of 95% of all other basketball players out there.

Types of Soft Toys

There are of course plenty of different types of soft toys available for kids of all ages. Broadly speaking you will be looking at two categories thereof – on the one hand you have the educational toys, and on the other hand there will be the “classic” soft toys, the comforting toys like teddy bears and plush animals. Both the learning and classic varieties have their own place in the nursery and both will deliver their own styles of fun and entertainment.

Educational toys are ideal for encouraging questing minds to start exploring the world around them. As far as types of soft toys go, educational toys tend either to be things like finger puppets and glove puppets, or sets of toys that illustrate a certain thing about the world, like a pack of farm animals or jungle animals. A puppet can actually help to awaken a child’s interest in the world around it – the colourful animal or character on the hand or on the finger can be used as a “teacher”, pointing things out to the child on a walk or in the nursery.

Classic types of soft toys perform two basic functions in the life of a child. First, they give the child what is probably its first experience of an attachment to something other than its mother and father (or of course its father and father, or its mother and its other mother). This is an extremely important thing for a child to learn. An attachment to a soft toy is a natural and healthy way of starting to learn that there are other things in the world to which one can become attached. In other words, that one is able to make friends.

Second then, the classic types of soft toys also encourage a child to start using its imagination. The child that starts to play with his or her toys regularly, and to give them imaginary personalities, or to take them on wild adventures, is a child learning to use his or her brain to make imaginative links between his or her internal world and the world outside. An active imagination is well reputed to be a sign of a healthy mind – so making sure that your child has access to the toys that are often his or her first outlet into the world of the mind is an important part of parenting.

There is of course one other attribute that all types of soft toys share. They are soft. This means that they are completely safe to give to even very young children. There is nothing about a soft toy that can cut or bruise or in other ways cause harm to a child and so parents can safely leave them to play with them, or to keep them in bed at night for a feeling of security and warmth. The only caution one might give is for parents of children still young enough to sleep in cots to take the cuddly toys away at night to prevent suffocation.

Definition:- This is an infestation caused by Giardia intestinalis (also called G. lamblia and duodenalis). Maximum infections are sporadic due to fecal contamination of food or drink, by person to person or anal-oral sexual contact. Travelers, campers, male homosexuals and persons with low immune status are also affected.

Incubation period 1-3 weeks.

Clinical Features-Children are mostly affected (more than 20% in developing countries) though adults are not immune to it. It is possible that achlorhydria, malnutrition, low IgA secretion from the gut and low gammaglobulin level in blood may predispose to infection. Children often produce symptoms whereas adults usually do not. Symptoms include diarrhoea, with characteristic foul smelling, bulky, greasy, frothy stool, abdominal pain, distension, flatulence and gradual emaciation. Symptoms may suggest amoebiasis or sprite syndrome. Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, fever may sometimes develop. In severe cases malabsorption syndrome may be seen. This may result in fat and protein losing enteropathy associated with Disaccharidase and Vitamin B12 deficiency, which may persist for a long time f% en after apparent cure. Allergic manifestations may also develop. Diagnosis This is done by finding the characteristic vegetative and cyst -ms of G. intestinalis in the stool. Concentration method also be used. When stool examination is negative Duodenal or jejunal aspirates of mucus obtained by string test endoscopy may be examined for the parasite. Coproantigen z7S by ELISA and IFA are also very specific (90%400%) and sensitive (85%-90%). Radiological investigation may also show increased transit time, thickened mucosa, altered motility of small intestine.

Treatment Drugs- Metronidazole 1 tab (250 mg) thrice daily for 7-10 days may be given. A higher dose of 350-750 mg three times daily for 10 days or even 2 gm once daily for 3 days have also been recommended for some patients.

Gastrointestinal side effects, e.g., nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth are commonly seen. Other reactions include headache, giddiness, candidial over growth and disulphirum like reaction in alcoholics. However, in some parts of the world this drug is not recommended in Giardiasis for its mutagenicity. Tinidazole It may also be used in a dose of 150 mg thrice daily for 8 days. A single dose of 0.5-2 gm may also be helpful. Side effects as in Metronidazole therapy may be seen but are less marked.

Quinacrine hydrochloride (Mepacrine) 0.1 gm thrice daily for 5-7 days is given. It should not be given in psoriatic subjects.

Furazolidone (Furoxone) 100 mg 4 times daily for 7 days may be used. Of all these drugs the first two drugs are very often used by the practitioners as they have practically little side effects.

Skeeter Syndrome – Mosquito Allergy Information

Most people are familiar with the itching and mild discomfort usually associated with a mosquito bite. But for some individuals, a mosquito bite has much more serious consequences cause by an allergy to the polypeptides in the mosquitos saliva.

When a mosquito bites, in not only sucks blood, but it also injects saliva to thin the blood before sucking the blood. The saliva contains a variety of enzymes, this is what the body reacts to with a mosquito bite allergy.

In sufferers mosquito bites come with extreme swelling, and blistering. The affected area is hard and hot to the touch, and the swelling is similar to what accompanies a bee sting. In extreme cases a mosquito bite can lead to anaphylaxis, asthma and angioedema.

In some cases an individual with no previous history of Skeeter Syndrome will suddenly present with symptoms ranging from moderate to severe. Although there is no known reason, studies have shown that the reaction is an immunological one, where the body is trying to fight off the offending member. Because there are over 16 species of mosquito it is possible that a bite by an unfamiliar species brought on the allergic reaction.

Treatment of Skeeter Syndrome involves symptom control. Topical treatments to minimize itching and swelling, and taking antihistamines to control the reaction are used and allow the affected area to heal, are the most traditional forms of treatment. Individuals with a history of anaphylactic shock should keep an EpiPen on hand if they begin to show signs of a mosquito allergy.

As with most allergies, prevention is the best treatment. The use of mosquito nets at night, topical insect repellants, and insecticides are all important to helping keep you safe from mosquitos. Individuals who live in a marshy area or tropical zone should be particularly cautious and make sure to have screens on all doors and use mosquito pellets at night to prevent bites.

Skeeter syndrome can affect individuals of all ages, but is particularly common among young children & babies. Keeping a net over your child’s bed and making sure you apply insect repellant during the day are the best ways to avoid an unpleasant reaction. It is important that children who are allergic to mosquitoes avoid playing outdoors after dusk as well, as that is the time when mosquitoes become the most active. Because mosquitoes are so common, avoiding a bite can be very complicated.

Thankfully there are many treatments you can use to control the symptoms if and when they occurred. Adding a little baking soda to your child’s bath can help alleviate itching and swelling. Traditional antihistamines, like Benadryl, are also very helpful and can help speed up recovery time and lessen discomfort.

Skeeter Syndrome is a severe allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Sufferers experience extreme swelling, pain, itching, blistering and in some cases even anaphylaxis. The best treatment is avoiding contact with mosquitoes; which is of course, easier said than done. Treating the symptoms with topical solutions and taking antihistamines orally can help speed up recovery and minimize the severity of the symptoms.
