Stomatitis (Mouth Sores) – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Inflammation of the mouth is known as Stomatitis. It may be caused by poor oral hygiene, burns due to hot fluid or food intake, medications, allergic reactions, or infections. While the cause of recurrent apthous stomatitis (canker sores) is not known, nutritional deficiencies are believed to play an important role. The management of stomatitis depends upon the cause responsible for the disease.

Stomatitis is known as “Mukhpak” in Ayurveda. The standard Ayurvedic treatment for stomatitis is as follows. A decoction of Triphala (Three fruits), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Manuka (dried grapes), and Jai (Jasminum auriculatum) leaves, combined with honey, is used for mouthwash. Cold water mixed with honey, or a decoction of Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and alum is also used as a mouthwash. Jatyadi oil, or Kamdudha mixed with cream is used for local application on the sores. Khadiradi vati is used for sucking. Mild purgation is advised. In patients having recurrent stomatitis, blood letting is advised.

In Ayurveda, stomatitis is divided into five different types, depending upon the disturbed Dosha causing the symptoms. A small description of each type along with the specific treatment is given below.

In the “Vataja” type of stomatitis, there is severe pain, fissuring of the tongue, and intolerance of cold food stuff. Panchlavan (five salts), and medicated oils are used for local application. Herbal medicines useful here are: Arjun ( Terminalia arjuna), Erand (Ricinus communis), Khadir (Acacia catechu), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Tagar (Valeriana wallichii), Deodar (Cedrus deodara) and Shilajit (Bitumen).

In the “Pittaja” type, there is severe burning, redness, and a bitter taste in the mouth. Induced purgation is advised in this type. Sugarcane juice, milk, grape juice and glucose water are used as a mouthwash. Dhatki (Woodfordia fruticosa) leaves are advised to be chewed. The same treatment, along with blood letting, is advised in the “Raktaja” type, where all symptoms are more pronounced.

In the “Kaphaja” type, there is comparatively less pain. The mouth ulcers are not very red, and are sticky. There is more of salivation, and a slight itching in the affected parts. Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), salts and Kshars (medicated caustics) are used for local application. Decoctions of Palash (Butea monosperma) and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), mixed with Kshar are used as a mouthwash.

In the last type of stomatitis called “Sannipataja”, there is a combination of symptoms of the vataja, pittaja and kaphaja types. Treatment is given according to the predominant symptoms. An Ayurvedic formulation containing Gorochan, Kasis, Alum, Rasanjan, Mocharasa (Salmalia malabarica) and honey is used for local application.

With the above treatment, most patients having only local symptoms get cured within a few days. For canker sore which are recurrent, or any stomatitis with very severe symptoms, a more prolonged treatment is usually required. In addition, patients may require oral treatment with herbal medicines, to correct imbalances in the body.

    A rather common opinion about badminton is that it is one of the safest games possible-a fun, family game innocent of malice and devoid of any real danger of injury. The extremely quick directional changes required during badminton, often cause the feet to roll over or twist, resulting in a sprained ankle. Fatigue, extra body weight and shoes with more than normal ‘grip’ are frequent contributors to such injuries.

    Meniscus Tear- This also goes by the layman-friendly alias ‘Torn Cartilage Knee Injury’ and is as painful as a sprained ankle. During the intricate footwork required during a badminton game, the meniscus or cartilage, which provides a soft cushioning between the thigh and shin bones, sometimes ruptures, causing pain in the joint-line of the knee, swelling and inability to flex the leg completely. This may sometimes also be accompanied by an injured or totally ruptured ligament, which increases the pain factor and healing time. Normally, the swelling and pain settles down easily for most people. However for some sportspersons, the knee can become prone to knee locking or ‘giving way’, in which case, surgery is required.

    Muscle Strain- Unexpected movements, such as a sudden overhead smash, may put muscles in various parts of the body under pressure, thereby causing a disruption of fibres in the affected muscle. This can result in pain, swelling, bruising and in extreme case, loss of function. Muscles commonly affected are the hamstring, knee, shoulder and calf, to name a few.

    Ocular hurt- A Malaysian study reportedly called badminton the ‘sport which presented the greatest ocular hazard in Malaysia’. Another Canadian study backed up these claims saying that 30-58% of all eye injuries in Canada caused by racquet sports were attributed to badminton. This may seem funny to a layman, since a shuttlecock looks anything but devious, with its lightweight feathery appearance, compared to the heavier balls used in tennis and squash. Although the frequency of eye injuries on an average is more in squash than in badminton, the latter does account for injuries which are greater in severity. This is partly because the bottom round of the shuttlecock fits into the eye orbit and also because of the extremely high speeds achieved during badminton. Badminton is widely considered to be the fastest racquet sport in the world and shuttlecocks have been known to reach speeds of more than 300 km/hour. On 25 September 2009, Malaysia’s Tan Boon Heong set the international smash record of 421 km/hour in the men’s double’s category at the Japan Open 2009. This is 1/3rd the speed of sound at sea level, so one can imagine the effect of a shuttlecock travelling at that speed and hitting one’s eye. It would be painful to say the least.

    Fractures- Fractures are fairly rare in badminton, although some have been reported. They normally happen when another player’s racquet hits a player’s arm or leg or if the player himself falls down heavily or if another player missteps and falls/steps on him/her.

    Chronic/overuse injuries:

    Achilles Tendonitis- Loosely defined, Achilles Tendonitis or Achilles Tendonipathy is an inflammation of the heel cord of the foot. In reference to badminton, it can be described as a chronic degenerative change in the Achilles Tendon (a cord of inelastic tissue connecting bone and muscle running from heel to calf) occurring due to repetitive jumping and running, worsened by poor warm-up techniques. More common as one ages, it also tends to worsen with activity.

    Tennis Elbow- Do not be mislead by the nomenclature of this particular injury. Tennis Elbow is often seen in sports other than tennis and very frequently among badminton players. The injury, known as Lateral Epicondylosis among the medical fraternity, is a chronic overuse injury which occurs due to the inflammation of the tendons of the forearm on the outer part of the elbow. Players who indulge in repetitive backhand strikes are often subject to Tennis Elbows. Change of grip size, lack of recovery and excess stretching tend to make them worse.

    Golfer’s Elbow- This particular injury is similar to Tennis Elbow in mostly all respects except for the location of the injury. While Tennis Elbow causes inflammation on the outer part of the elbow, Golfer’s Elbow usually occurs on the inner side of the elbow with the pain sometimes radiating along the forearm. It is also a chronic degenerative problem, mainly caused by an overuse of the wrist.

    Jumper’s Knee- As the name suggests, this injury often comes on due to repeated jumping on hard surfaces. Known in medical terms as Patellar Tendonitis, the Patella Tendon located below the knee cap is affected over a long period of jumping and landing during badminton. Activity normally worsens the tendon damage and a rupture may sometimes follow with lack of rest

    Rotator cuff injury- The most prominent shoulder injury to affect badminton players over time, typically a rotator cuff injury is brought on over time by repeated stress to the shoulder area while playing overhead shots in badminton. It usually begins as a lingering irritation in the shoulder known as an ‘impingement syndrome’, which if left uncared for, worsens to develop partial tears in the rotator cuff muscles. Further activity and stress can cause a complete tear in one or more muscles in the area.

    Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction- The Sacroiliac Joint connects the sacrum at the base of the spine to the ilium of the pelvic region. Continuous badminton playing with low core stability causes an anatomic issue in this joint, which results in chronic lower back pain. The condition is known as Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction and affected players are advised to refer a physician for a complete evaluation of the condition.

    Neck sprains- Focusing on the shuttlecock for long durations and turning one’s neck accordingly in various directions, can cause the neck to be extended beyond the normal angles, especially while playing smashes and strikes around the head, thereby causing neck sprains.

    Cramps- A cramp can be described in a badminton player as a sudden and intense pain caused mainly in the leg area due to major loss of fluid, overheating of the muscle and fatigue. Although the suddenness of a cramp could warrant it to be placed in the “acute injury” category, it is considered to be a chronic injury, since it happens after playing badminton for a long time.

    Abrasions and blisters- Common yet less malignant as compared to the rest of the above-mentioned conditions, abrasions occur mostly on the hands and knees due to direct contact with hard surfaces when the player falls or scratches himself. Blisters occur due to pus or fluid formation under the skin caused by extended periods of gripping a racquet, an abrasion not being cleaned or healed properly and heels or toes being continually encased in shoes or being in direct contact with a hard surface for long periods.

    Prevention and cure:

    It would be wise to adhere to the oft heard rule in the exercise arena “You don’t get fit to play a sport, you play a sport to get fit!” Therefore it is advisable for badminton players of all ages and levels to take a few important pre-game precautionary measures, which include but are not limited to increasing fitness levels, better nutrition, decreasing weight, getting the proper shoes, grips and other attire, warming-up before playing and improving playing technique.

    One cannot stress enough the importance of a good warm-up session before and cool-down session after a heavy game of badminton. A typical warm-up should include about 5-10 minutes of gentle jogging , spot walking or skipping, followed by short stretches of 30 seconds each, slightly longer stretches on the tighter muscles ending with stretches for certain individual muscle groups like shoulder, hamstring etc. If the player wishes, he/she may also follow this with certain specific exercise drills such as push-ups, sit-ups and the like. Stretching releases tension within muscles, allows freer movement and circulation and not only prepares the body for heavy-duty badminton, but also the mind. Begin the game with around 5-20 minutes of gentle shots with your partner and then gradually increase the pace and tempo of your game. Ideally one must end a game with cool down exercises and stretches too.

    Shoes and grips especially are of utmost importance in preventing ankle and elbow injuries respectively. Gripping a racquet too hard or long can bring on a Tennis Elbow, while wearing heavy grip non-supportive shoes cause ankle sprains and Achilles Tendonitis.

    To prevent elbow issues, take extra care to buy a good quality racquet which fits precisely into the palm of your hand. Turn your racquet into a powerful, injury-preventing instrument by adding more grip to the handle, taking care not to add too much to disrupt the racquet balance.     8 Ways to Grow Your HAIR Faster

    It’s a known fact of life: Girls are always changing their hair. They grow it out for years, just to realize that they want their hair to be short. After a week of short hair, they realize that they miss their long hair and start the cycle all over again. Actually, in today’s world of the “Justin Bieber Hairstyle,” a lot of guys are even trying to grow their hair faster.

    Well, personally, my hair is still recovering up from a bad haircut. It was basically chopped into a mullet and has never fully recovered. Because I want to grow my hair long faster, like you, and I am sick of putting in my extensions every day, I am going to teach you ways that will legitimately help your hair grow faster.

    1. Try To Keep Your Hair From Damaging

    The first thing you can do to help grow your hair faster is to eliminate sources of damage.

    Just so you know, I am the *queen* of damaged hair.

    I can’t even count how many times I have colored my hair black, just to bleach it back to platinum blonde again, and back and forth.

    The last time that I colored my hair platinum blonde, I committed to keeping it that way. I try to go as long as possible in between hair colors to give it time to heal. People ask me all the time how my hair is so healthy, soft and shiny, even though I bleach it. I am constantly reconditioning it in between colors. I really like the It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Masque. When I am at home, doing chores, I’ll put some conditioner in my hair, put a plastic bag around it, and leave it. Sometimes, I will even sleep with it in my hair. I also try to keep my flat-iron use minimal. If you do flat-iron your hair every day, do use a protectant /conditioning spray, like the HealthySexyHair “Soya Want Flat Hair Flat Iron Spray”, which infuses your hair with protein as you use it. I also use protein shampoo/conditioner often. Dumb Blonde by Bedhead is my favorite. Keep in mind that your hair needs more than just protein.     2. Trim Your Hair Every 6 Weeks

    A lot of people don’t think cutting your hair will help it grow faster. And although, it doesn’t make it grow faster, it will eliminate split ends, which could lead to shorter hair. The best analogy I have ever heard, is to think of your hair like a piece of rope. When rope starts to fray, you have to burn the piece that is frayed, or else it will continue to fray further up the rope. If you have split ends, and you don’t trim them, they may continue to split further up your hair, causing breakage. Breakage means shorter hair. We can’t have that if we are trying to grow it out faster.

    You don’t have to cut a lot of hair off. Just be very sure to express to your hair stylist that you only want to trim the tips of your hair because you are trying to grow it out, and want the split ends cut off. Also be sure to let them know not to cut off more than a quarter/half-inch. The better communication you give to your stylist, the better he/she can understand what you want and deliver it to you.

    3. Take Vitamins

    You probably always hear that prenatal vitamins make your hair grow faster. I have researched that topic a lot in the past, and it turns out that an abundance of hormones produced while pregnant is what really makes your hair grow, not the prenatal vitamins.

    Here is a hair lesson: For normal people, at any given time, 90% of their hair is in the growth phase, while the other 10% is in a resting phase. This is why your hair grows uneven after a haircut. After the resting phase, your hair follicle prepares for the shedding phase. It is normal for anyone to lose about 50-100 hair strands per day.

    The increased level of estrogen present in pregnant women causes ALL of your hair to stay in it’s growing phase. Therefore, you are not losing any hair (which gives the impression that your hair is growing faster). Hair texture and color have also been noted to change during pregnancy. Now keep in mind, before you rush out to get pregnant, that pregnant women lose a TON of hair after they have a baby. This is because the estrogen level drops back down to normal, and they shed all of the hair that they didn’t lose while they were pregnant.

    So even if prenatal vitamins are a bust, there are still other vitamins that help your hair grow faster. Vitamins rich in B-complex are known to help your hair grow a great deal. Vitamin B-complex contains biotin, folic acid and insositol which help rotate the growth cycle of your hair quicker than it did before. There is even vitamin B-complex shampoo that is said to help your hair grow faster. It is said that flax-seed oil, vitamin E, and vitamin A all also help grow your hair faster. Personally, I have used the Nioxin Vitamins that are designed for growing hair, and also “hair, skin and nails” pills, and have seen positive effects with both of them.

    4. Eliminate factors that impede hair growth

    Keep in mind, that every thing you put in your body comes out through your hair. Different types of medications cause different reactions to your hair. Sometimes, medications will cause a color or perm to not take, and also some can make your hair fall out. Your hair will not grow faster if you are constantly losing hair. Common types of medications that cause hair loss are Acne medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control, anti-clotting pills, cholesterol lowering, drugs that suppress the immune system, epilepsy drugs, drugs used in breast cancer, high-blood pressure medications, hormone replacement, mood stabilizers, steroids, weight-loss drugs and thyroid medications. It does depend on what dosage you take and how sensitive you are to them. I don’t know much about the health industry, so I would recommend talking to a doctor about what you take.

    Now medications are a hard thing to deal with because many of us need our drugs. But another thing to keep in mind is that if you are unhealthy, so is your hair. Eating healthier food, drinking a lot of water, not smoking/drinking alcohol are all factors that play a part in hair growth.

    Another big problem is stress. Stress does a number of horrific things to your body but can also trigger hair loss. It’s easier said than done sometimes, but try to de-stress if you want your hair to grow faster.

    5. Stimulate your scalp

    There’s an old wives tale that states if you brush your hair 100 times every night before you go to sleep, it will make your hair grow faster. Not only is that not true, but brushing your hair is actually bad for your hair. The bristles get caught in small tangles and usually rip hair out, creating our enemy: breakage. When your hair is wet, you should comb it with a wide-tooth comb to help eliminate breakage.

    There is something called “Scientific Brushing” that is said to help grow hair faster though. It is vital that you use a natural bristle brush and remember, you are brushing it against your scalp, not your hair. You brush all around your hairline first, then you brush in 1/2 inch subsections throughout your scalp. When you brush, do a rolling motion. The bristles stimulate and bring blood flow to your scalp, which encourages hair to grow faster. Do this before you shampoo your hair. I would also comb it first to make sure there are no tangles. Scientific brushing can also help with dandruff.

    When you shampoo your hair, really massage your scalp. This does the same thing as the scientific brushing. Sometimes, it’s even better to shampoo your hair twice so you get a better lather. I would spend a few minutes massaging your scalp. Not only does it help, but it also feels good!

    6. Nioxin / Invati

    Working in the hair industry, I have heard a ton of good things about Nioxin. In fact, I had one client that specifically told me that it was so weird because hair was growing so much, and she had a lot of new growth. She couldn’t figure out why it was growing. I asked her what she used. She said “Nioxin”. I told her that Nioxin is formulated to make your hair grow and she didn’t even know that. Now she’s hooked on it for life. She will buy another bottle before she even runs out, so she never has to go without it. It works by detoxifying your scalp, removing and neutralizing toxins, cleaning out the pores, and reducing scalp inflammation. It also cleanses hormones from the hair follicle that causes male pattern baldness.

    It’s a controversial topic if Nioxin actually works or not to make hair grow faster. The answer is it works differently on everyone. I’ve heard people say that they’ve used it for months upon months and seen no difference. I also know people who swear by it. It is not known if it actually makes your hair grow faster or just stops you from losing hair. Either way, I believe it works, and the fact that it keeps your scalp healthy, can’t hurt. I know that the best results are seen when the cleanser, scalp therapy conditioner, and the scalp treatment (which you spray on after you get out of the shower) are all used. I recommend a starter kit like this one. I also know that it takes a few months to start seeing noticeable results. I have heard people say that they think Nioxin dries their hair out, but my own personal experience is that it makes my hair feel very soft and hydrated when I use it.

    Yesterday, it was brought to my attention that there is a new product similar to Nioxin, made by Aveda, called Invati. I can’t really tell you anything about it, but it is supposed to work well, and Aveda is at trustworthy name, so I would expect it to be good.

    7. Eat a lot of protein

    I know someone who is getting a gastrointestinal bypass real soon. The doctors instructed her that she needs to eat a lot of protein before, and after the surgery. The doctor told her that all the extra protein will make her hair grow faster. It makes sense, right? Hair is composed of 80% protein. If your body is not getting enough protein, it may not have enough to give your hair follicles, and therefore your hair will grow slower.

    8. Rogaine

    If all else fails, there is always Rogaine. Rogaine is the only FDA approved, over-the-counter topical medication that is actually proved to make your hair grow faster. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, and exactly how it works is unproven. It was originally a drug used to treat high blood pressure, but it turns out that it works better for growing hair than keeping blood pressure down. A 16 week study showed that 85% of people using it correctly experienced new hair growth. Only mild side-effects have been reported, including scalp irritation and itching. I say its worth a shot!

    The Alternative Names For Breast Cancer

    Alternative names for breast cancer are: cancer of breast; carcinoma – ductal; carcinoma – lobular.

    Other names do people employ is familial; malignant neoplasm of breast; malignant tumor of breast; and mammary cancer.

    Breast cancer is a disease in which certain cells in the breast become abnormal and reproduce with no control or order to shape a tumor. The most usual form starts in cells lining the ducts that bring milk to the nipple (ductal cancer). Other forms start in the glands that generate milk (lobular cancer) or in other areas of the breast.

    However, not all breast cancers are similar. They happen from various areas of the breast, have various names and work in a different way, though they externally come out the same.

    The first strength of mind for naming is whether the breast cancer is “in situ” or “invasive”. In situ cancers stay in the boundaries of the type of cells that shaped them. In situ indicates “in place”, staying where it belongs and not spreading. Therefore in situ cancers are at times named precancerous, signifying they might grow into invasive cancers at some later time. Roughly 20-40% of in situ cancers will do this if not removed. At present, roughly 12% of detected breast cancers are in situ.

    The second part of the name informs something regarding that particular type of cancer. A number of breast cancers get their names from the cells of the breast that turned into cancer.
