RICE Method – Relieve Muscle Strains And Cramps

Sometimes, you can’t help it. Your muscles pull themselves accidentally and cause you an injury in the related area. In some cases, your urine might turn out to be brown in color because of muscle injuries. This is because the myglobin protein is released when there is a torn muscle.

You can treat your muscle strain and cramps using the RICE method, which stands for relative rest, ice, compression and elevation.

Relative rest

Stop what you are doing immediately. Don’t do further damage by continuing the activity. Save yourself first. How long should your rest? Well, you should take time off from the gym or your exercise program for few days or weeks, depending on the severity of the muscle tear.

Ice

Then, you should apply a bag of ice for 15 minutes every day. Why should you apply ice? Well, it reduces the swelling and pooling of fluids from the leaky muscle cells and blood vessels.

Compression

Next, you have to compress the injured area by using an elastic bandage. This way, you can lessen the swelling and constrict the injured blood vessels.

Elevation

You should let gravity do the work for you. How do you do it? For example, if the injured area is your leg, you should rest it above your heart level. You can put your leg on a higher platform. This helps prevent fluid from accumulating at the injured area. It also helps to keep the swelling to the minimum and helps return the plasma and fluids back to your heart.

When to use RICE method?

You must use it within 12 hours of the injury because this is when most swelling will occur. When the swelling has subsided, you can also apply heat to promote blood flow and healing.

Ovarian Cancer: More Deadly Than Breast Cancer

A few years ago I was asked if I knew what the most deadly gynecologic cancer was and I answered “Well, breast cancer of course.” Oh, how I was wrong. The American Cancer Society estimates that the average five year survival rate of breast cancer at any stage to actually be 89 percent. While no cancer is good that’s a pretty good rate. The correct answer to the question is ovarian cancer, and its five year survival rate (estimated by the American cancer society) is only 46 percent. We need to find out why this cancer is so deadly.

Cancer is a dangerous and mysterious thing to people that don’t know much about it. Well, everyone is made up of cells, cells are what make up tissue and tissue is what makes up our organs. Normally when a cell gets old and tired it dies just like we do and a new cell takes its place. Our body produces these new cells by growing and dividing healthy cells. Sometimes our body overproduces cells and this is when tumors (mass of tissue) are formed. These tumors aren’t always cancer; when they are not they are called benign tumors. When they are cancer they are call malignant; these are the ones that can be life-threatening. Both types of tumors can be removed but the cancerous ones are more likely to grow back and only they also can spread to different parts of your body. When this happens the cancer cells are breaking away from the original tumor and entering the blood stream to use it like a highway to travel around your body. When the cancer cells spread like this it’s called metastasis and the cancer can start to go new tumors. If these cells reach any of your organs and start to go new tumors and this is when damage can be done.

They call it ovarian cancer because the tumor first starts at the ovaries and is made up of over productive ovarian cells. The ovaries are part of the women’s reproductive system and are attached to the uterus by the fallopian tubes. When a malignant tumor starts to grow these areas can also be affected because of their close proximity to the ovaries. When this tumor starts to shed cancer cells the cells typically go to the abdomen first because it’s closest to where the reproductive system is located. Then as I said before the cancerous cells can start to affect your lymph nodes and enter your blood stream to travel to different organs.

Ovarian cancer is so deadly because it’s very hard to detect. Every year more than 14,600 women die from ovarian cancer in the United States. This may not seem like a lot when you think of all the billion people that live here but when about 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year that number seems like a lot. So this means that on average 7 out of 10 women will die from this disease and this is all because it is so hard to detect. In order to detect it you have to know what the symptoms are. The most common symptoms are pain in the abdomen, pelvis, back or legs because of where the cancer is located in your body. You can also have a swollen or bloated abdomen because it can fill up with fluids. You will also feel very tired all the time and would have some nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation, or even diarrhea. Some less common symptoms would be shortness of breath, the urge to urinate often, and unusual vaginal bleeding. Now these are pretty general symptoms and many other disease or illnesses can cause them and that’s why it’s so hard to detect because ovarian cancer is not typical the very first thing we think of when we have one or more of these symptoms.

Most women would think if there was a problem that it would show up on their Pap test which is a once yearly screening that women get from their doctor. However, a Pap test is only screening for cervical cancer and it cannot be used to diagnose ovarian cancer. When women do go in to your doctor for the Pap test he or she should be doing a pelvic exam as well, during this they will feel your ovaries and organs in close proximity for any lumps or changes in shape and/or size. More often than not the doctors will not be able to feel a tumor until they are a substantial size. This is why we look to other testing as well as the pelvic exam to diagnose this cancer. If women who have abdominal bloating or pain and would go to the doctor, they may check your abdomen for fluid buildup. If they some find some a sample can be taken to test for ovarian cancer cells as part of the diagnoses. There is also blood testing where your doctor would check your CA-125 level to see if it is high. The CA-125 is a substance that is found on the surface of the ovarian cancer cells but also on some normal tissue, this is why a high level might indicate cancer. Unfortunately this test cannot be used as the only test for diagnosing ovarian cancer. It is mainly used for monitoring a woman that has already been diagnosed and is going through treatment or as an early detection for the return of cancer after treatment has been completed. The next way to get diagnosed is by having an ultrasound done. There are two different types of ultrasounds that can be done; the first is the less invasive of the two. This is where they take the ultrasound device and press it up against your abdomen and the sound waves that it produces bounce off the organs to produce a picture for us to see. By using this they would be able to get a picture of the ovaries to see if there was a tumor or any abnormalities. The second type of ultrasound they can do is a transvaginal ultrasound and it does the same things as the regular one however this device is inserted into the vagina for a much better view of the ovaries. The last test to help diagnose this cancer is a biopsy. They will only do a biopsy if blood test and one of the ultrasounds have indicated that there may be a tumor. A biopsy is when they take a sample of tissue or fluid to look for cancer cells. Once they biopsy has been done a pathologist will look as the sample under a microscope for any cancer cells. If there are some found then they will be described as either grade 1, 2, or 3 and this is based off of how abnormal the cells look.

Once the doctors have determined that there are cancer cells present they have to determine what stage the disease is in before they can start any treatment. In order to find out what stage the cancer is in the doctor must know grade the tumor is which we discussed earlier and they also may need to run a series of more test such as a CT scan or a chest x-ray. The CT scan is where they would give you some contrast material and the machine would then take several pictures to get a clearer picture of your pelvis and abdomen to see any tumors or abdominal fluid. The chest x-ray is used to see if the cancer has spread to your lungs and if there is any fluid buildup there as well.

There are four stages of ovarian cancer; the first stage is called stage 1. Stage 1 is where cancer cells can be found on one or both ovaries or in abdominal fluid. Only 15 percent of the total women diagnosed have stage 1 and they have a 5 year survival rate of 93.8 percent (statistics). Stage 2 is where the cancer has spread to other reproductive organs such as the fallopian tubes and the uterus. It can also be found in abdominal fluid as well as other tissue in the pelvis area. The 5 year survival rate for stage 2 is 72.8 percent and only 17 percent of women diagnosed have this stage. Stage 3 is where the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and can be also found on the outside of the liver. This is the most common stage that women are diagnosed (62 percent) with only a 28.2 percent survival rate or 5 years (statistics). The last stage is stage 4 and this is when the cancer can be found in the lungs or in any other organs. So, at this point it has traveled out of both the pelvic and abdominal areas. This has the lowest survival rate of 27.3 percent and the lowest percent of women diagnosed at 7 percent (statistics).

Once the doctor has determined what stage you are in you can start treatment accordingly. Most women will have surgery to remove cancer cells and also both ovaries and fallopian tubes, your uterus, any nearby lymph nodes, as well as the omentum which is a thin fat pad that covers the intestines. If you only have stage 1 sometimes the doctors will leave the uterus intact and only take one ovary and fallopian tube but this depends on your age and whether or not you would like to become pregnant and have children. If the cancer is one of the other stages (2, 3 or 4) then they might have to go in further and remove as much cancer as they possibly can. They can also do chemotherapy as a form of treatment. This is when “anticancer” drugs are given to kill the cancerous cell. The drugs can be given by either inserting them into the vein (IV), intraperitoneal (IP) which is given directly into the abdomen through a very thin tube, or by mouth via pill form (ovarian cancer 13). The side effects to the chemotherapy can be hair loss, vomiting, and diarrhea. This is because the drugs also harm normal cells, so it can damage your hair cells (hair loss) and the cells that line your digestive tract (vomiting and diarrhea) but it can also damage your blood cells and make your body bruise easier and you would be more susceptible to get infections because your blood cells are what help fight infections off.

As of right now we cannot explain why one women may develop this cancer and another will not but there are some women that are at higher risk. If you have any women in your family that has had ovarian cancer, specifically your mother, daughter, or sister you or a family member are at a higher risk. But, also if you or any other family members have had uterus, colon, rectum, or breast cancer you or a family member will be at a higher risk. Most women that are diagnosed with this disease are over the age of 55 and have never been pregnant. If you or a family member is at an increase risk you want to talk to your family member to make sure they are aware of these risks. Then I would encourage those at risk people to consult your doctor and see if anything can be done to make sure if you would so some signs of cancer, it could be detected early.

They may recommend genetic testing to see if you have a certain mutation of the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene which has been linked to ovarian cancer and breast cancer. If you go and have this testing done you will have to provide a detailed family history and also give a blood sample. They will test they blood for mutations in your DNA, specifically looking at your BRCA 1 and 2 genes. When you get the results back they will let you know if they found a mutation and if they did you know that you for sure are at an increase risk. If they don’t find a mutation they will still put you into an at risk category based on your family history. This testing has been very important in determining the links between certain mutations and ovarian cancer. The more data we can collect the better off we are on finding a connection.

The most important thing to remember is that this is the most deadly gynecologic cancer with very nonspecific symptoms, 15,000 women die from this cancer every year. If you or anyone you know are having any of these symptoms you should talk to them and encourage them to contact their doctor in hopes of early detection. The earlier the detection the better chances you or a family member has of not becoming one of the 15,000.

Homeopathic Remedies That Relieve Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies usually start around the spring time. They generally continue all through the summer and sometimes into the fall. These are mainly caused by pollen. Pollen are powdered grains released from flowering plants. The flowering plants could be from many species including oak, olive, elm, birch, ash, hickory, poplar, sycamore, maple, cypress and walnut. The purpose of pollen is to reach other plants to help them flower and grow. It is usually taken by wind or insects to reach these plants. Pollen may also exist in grass and weeds. These type of allergies happen in the summer. You can see your local doctor to find out what type of pollens that you are allergic to. This help you formulate a proper plan to tackle the seasonal allergies.

Keeping yourself pollen free is near impossible. However, there are a few things that can be done to limit your exposure. Some things to do would be to stay in the house in the morning. Pollen is greatest around 05:00AM-10:00AM. Stay indoors when the pollen count is too high. A great website that will alert you when the pollen is too high is pollen. com. Simply put your email address in their subscribe box and you will be automatically alerted. You also need to keep your windows closed in your home and when you are driving to help reduce the amount you intake.

Homeopathic deals with seasonal allergies quite differently than conventional remedies. Homeopathic remedies are individualized. Different symptoms require a different remedy. The remedy may have to be changed from time to time. If you have severe allergies, a homeopathic doctor should be consulted. Minor allergies can be self treated with homeopathy.

Certain pollen allergies cause watery eyes and burning nasal discharge. Sneezing happens but may not be constant. There may be pain in the forehead. People with these type of conditions feel better when they are inside the house in a cool room. They feel worse in warm rooms or in cold weather. Hot foods and drinks make them feel bad as well. The remedy used to treat this condition is Allium Cepa 6X.

Another type of allergy makes people sneeze constantly followed by an irritation cough. Nostrils are sore and red from the constant sneezing. The throat may also burn. Asthma may accompany the allergy. People with this type of allergy feel worse from sneezing and warm areas. The correct remedy to take is Arsenicum Iodatum 6X.

Another instance of allergy affects people primarily in the eyes. Eyes are swollen and sensitive to bright light. Eyes are watery. Little discharge from nose. The mucus drips to the back of the throat. People generally feel better by resting and sleeping. Warm weather and hot areas make this allergy feel worse. Being indoors and out in the evening makes the allergy feel worse. The proper remedy for this situation is Euphrasia 6X.

The final allergy basically caused a sore throat. Swallowing is very painful. Eyes are red and swollen. Eyes are also watery. The throat becomes very dry. Headaches make you feel like your head is shrinking. People feel better from eating and drink hot foods and drinks. The allergy is made worse from cold weather and cold drinks. The remedy for this situation is Sabadilla 6X.

As you can see, there are many remedies to treat seasonal allergies with homeopathy. We have just listed 4 of these remedies and the type of allergies needed for each remedy. There are other allergies and other remedies that can be taken as well. See a homeopathic doctor if you need help matching your allergies to the homeopathic remedies. If you know some other type of homeopathic remedies that are used for allergies that are effective list them in the comments. We hope with the help of homeopathy that you will survive this allergy season.

How To Drain A Pilonidal Cyst At Home

Can’t handle the pain of your pilonidal cyst any longer? Surgery hurts even more, so much that the first few days of recovery you’ll have trouble moving due to pain. Maybe you already undergone 1, 2 or even 6 and this only worsened your situation. You consulted the doctor but he or she didn’t offer you a surgical drainage so you are thinking on doing it yourself at home. Don’t take it lightly, for it can result counterproductive. To prevent this, I warn you about troublesome methods and explain you simple, painless ones.

Everyone Does The Same Thing

You are probably tempted to squeeze your pilonidal cyst in the same way than you’d pop an acne pimple. The difference is that in contrast to this, a pilonidal cyst does not mature into a white-head, complicating the process. It may end up aggravating irritation as well as inflammation and consequently pain.

It is noteworthy that squeezing rarely gets rid of all the pus so it reproduces again. Is it worth all the hassle and pain? Moreover, you’d have to repeat the process again further on.

Hold On Right There

Never cut open your pilonidal cyst. You run the risk of slicing an unaffected area causing the infection to spread or develop there. This prevents healing by scar. In case the cut is deep, you can’t have it sewn up.

Nor suction your pilonidal cyst with a syringe. This will not only collect pus but blood, with which a limit exists unless you want to suffer serious consequences, as well as fat, which would affect the form of the natal cleft. You can drag the infection deeper into your body with the needle.

Look At All That Pus

The following methods are effective on a big pilonidal cyst and stop doing so once they brought certain improvement. It is worth to try them even if your pilonidal cyst doesn’t measure that much since it’s the only way to know if they will work. No matter if these methods to drain it fail 2 or 3 times, they could work in the next few ones.

Prepare the shower. Start bathing yourself. When you’re about to finish, let the water heat considerably without reaching the point where it burns you. Let it fall over your pilonidal cyst. This will itch intensely for a moment, burst open and leak pus.

Another way to drain a pilonidal cyst at home is by taking Aloe Vera. This contains active components like Aloin and Emodin, 2 anthraquinones that possesses analgesic, antiviral and antibacterial properties, as well as salicylic acid, which possesses the last and anti-inflammatory properties. The gel found inside the leaves carries a strong effect so you can only take a little of it. Otherwise, you’ll develop diarrhea since the anthraquinones also endow the plant with laxative properties.

Watch out with the methods to drain a pilonidal cyst at home that worsen your discomfort or harm you. Per se the condition is complicated enough as to risk yourself to acquire other health problems. As long as you follow the precautions of hot water and Aloe Vera, they’re safe. Use them often.

Myths About Swimming and Yeast Infections – Suffer From Yeast Infection No More

“Can I go swimming when I have a yeast infection?” This question, often asked by active women, arises from a myth about yeast infections. The myth is that when infected, a woman must keep completely dry in order to “dry out” the yeast. Let’s separate the myth from the reality and learn how you can best take care of yourself.

Candida albicans, the organism responsible for your yeast infection, grows best in warm, dark and damp areas. That’s why it’s very important to wear clean, dry, breathable clothing. Loose fitting natural fabrics like cotton are best. Avoid tight fitting jeans and man-made materials such as nylon and lycra. In warm weather, a sun dress and clean cotton panties are comfortable and inhibit the growth of the Candida fungus.

Swimming itself does not cause the growth of Candida albicans. Getting wet for a short time does not pose a problem. The problem is caused when you wear your damp bathing suit or other clothing for an extended period. After swimming, dry yourself off and put on dry clothing made of natural fabrics. By the same token, change out of sweaty clothing after a workout.

Candida is not transmitted through water. The chemical in the pool and the salt in the ocean will kill the yeast organisms. You don’t need to worry about catching a yeast infection by swimming or giving it to someone else either. In fact, the exercise you get from swimming will make your body stronger and help your immune system fight off the infection.

Candida grows best and will cause a yeast infection when it has an environment that is warm, damp and dark. By itself, swimming will not cause an infection if you keep dry after swimming. If you still have Candida problems, or if you have recurring infections, you need more help.

The Downside Of Male Circumcision – What Do You Lose When You Face The Knife?

The foreskin is a complex organ with a lot of similarities to the eyelid due to its two layer structure. Scientists have now revealed the function and structure of these skin that sheaths the penis after a long and detailed study. The practice of male circumcision has been blown out of proportion. Circumcision is considered to be in vogue and these misconception has received a lot of backing from the medical field. The complete removal of the foreskin ought to be viewed as a male genital mutilation. Many people are yet to realize what they are losing through circumcision. The benefits of circumcision have been trumpeted so much and for many years without giving due consideration to the aftermath of these surgery. Surgery in medical terms is the actual removal of a diseased or unwanted part of the body. But the foreskin is a vital organ just like an appendix is important.

The foreskin is a delicate organ designed to offer protection to the penis head from constant abrasion and possible infection. It forms half of all the penile skin and folds itself around the penis. The inside surface of the foreskin is a complexity of a soft mucosa which releases smegma which is a form of antiviral and antibacterial lubricant. These lubricants go a step further and protect the glans for any form of infection and from constant friction and abrasion. Due to the sheathed nature of the glans in a moist environment, sensitivity is retained in its pure form. When it comes to sex the skin fold called the foreskin glides along the shaft of the penis. The movement provides stimulation and lubrication. During circumcision all these functions and benefits are lost. Beware of male circumcision. It robs a man vital elements from his manhood. Circumcision only serves to deny him his natural rights.

Male circumcision is a health risk as a recent study shows. The journal of the American Medical Association which published the study shows that circumcision actually puts a man at an awkward health situation. Much as male circumcision alleviates the possibilities of HIV and syphilis infection the health risks are still higher. Circumcised men stand a higher chance of infection from herpes, chlamydia and hepatitis. Whoever announced to the world that male circumcision can save a man from disease infection ought to be prosecuted. It is misleading to tell the public that circumcision is a form of immunization. It makes the public to behave in inappropriate manner with the notion that they are safe. Beware of circumcision because it solves a small problem but creates a bigger one.

Circumcised men do not realize what they are losing in terms of sexual pleasure. Male circumcision removes all the erogenous tissue. The foreskin has numerous nerve endings which make sex to be so exciting and pleasurable. The glans peels itself off the top most sensitive skin during the healing process. An uncircumcised man enjoys optimum sexual pleasure with his partner. The foreskin is so erogenous you will regret why you lost it. The gliding of the foreskin along the penile shaft during sex gives a man unprecedented sexual pleasure. It is pleasure that a circumcised man can only dream of hence beware of male circumcision.

How to Cure Gout Attacks Without Prescription Drugs

Gout is a very painful inflammatory condition of the joints, caused by crystallized uric acid collecting around the affected joint. The most common joint affected is the big toe; however, gout can affect the ankle, instep, heel, knee, spine, elbow, wrist, and finger. In severe cases, gout can deform the affected joint.

People prone to gout tend to have high uric acid levels in their blood. The high uric acid levels may be caused by the kidneys’ failure to adequately remove uric acid from the blood.

Uric Acid Level

You say, “Okay, my kidneys aren’t working properly. So what can I do to cure my gout?” The answer is you can do a lot.

First of all, certain foods and beverages heighten the body’s uric acid level, and certain foods and beverages don’t. So if you avoid the foods and beverages that heighten your uric acid level, and partake in the foods and beverages that don’t, you will never get a gout attack – thus curing your gout condition!

What are the foods and beverages that heighten the body’s uric acid level, causing a gout attack? Meats and seafood promote gout attacks. Do you like beef, pork, lamb, liver, bacon, fish, lobster, mussels, scallops, or shrimp? Sorry, you have to pass on these. To a lesser degree, chicken, turkey, and duck promote gout attacks. Do you like beer? Well you don’t anymore, because beer promotes gout attacks.

High-Protein Foods

Avoiding meats and seafood puts you in a dilemma. You avoid these foods to avoid gout attacks, but your body cannot function properly without protein – meats and seafood are common sources of protein! What do you do?

Luckily, there are high-protein foods that don’t cause gout attacks. They are listed below categorically.

Eggs and Dairy Products: High in protein are milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, and eggs.

Grains and Cereals: High in protein are buckwheat, amaranth grain (usually sold in health food shops), and quinoa.

Nuts and Seeds: High in protein are peanuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds.

Beans including Soy: High in protein are tofu, soy milk, beans, soy beans, and split peas.

Red Wine

So all you have to do is substitute these high-protein foods for the meats and seafood that you usually eat. “But what about beer? Is there a substitute for that? I need to have a beer to unwind after work,” you say. Once again, you are in luck.

Since red wine doesn’t elevate the body’s uric acid level, it doesn’t cause gout attacks. In fact, red wine may even lower uric acid levels! And certainly red wine is just as effective as beer in helping you to unwind.

High-Dose Vitamin C

Not only may red wine reduce uric acid levels, vitamin C may also do likewise. High-dose vitamin C reduces uric acid levels in most gout sufferers. However, for some gout sufferers, high-dose vitamin C worsens their condition.

A dose of 500 mg per day significantly reduces uric acid levels in most gout sufferers. But before you begin a vitamin C regimen, you should get your physician’s approval; because high-dose vitamin C might possibly eliminate uric acid from your body too quickly, causing kidney stones.

Is Protein Substitution Practical?

Some of you may be saying right about now, “Okay, this all makes sense, but it’s impractical. This protein substitution lacks variety; there’s no way I can follow it.” Lack of variety? Let’s see. I’ll attempt to brainstorm a variety of gout-safe high-protein foods.

The following foods contain cheese, and can be served without meats and seafood: pizza, cheese ravioli, baked ziti, mozzarella sticks, eggplant Parmesan, cheese omelette, lasagna, muffin egg and cheese sandwich, macaroni and cheese, baked potato with cheddar cheese sauce, stuffed shells Italiano, cheese manicotti in marinara sauce, salad with blue cheese dressing, cheesecake, broccoli cheese soup, asparagus with Parmesan cheese, smoked mozzarella fonduta, fettuccine alfredo, penne with goat cheese, and ricotta gnocchi.

The following foods contain buckwheat, and can be served without meats and seafood: buckwheat pancakes, buckwheat breads, buckwheat muffins, buckwheat crackers, buckwheat bagels, buckwheat cookies, buckwheat tortillas, some breakfast cereals, buckwheat grits, kasha, buckwheat porridge, buckwheat salad with mushrooms and parsley oil, kasha varnishkes, buckwheat noodles, Japanese soba noodles, California buckwheat chapati, kasha knishes, and some blini.

The following foods contain peanuts, and can be served without meats and seafood: peanut candy, salted nuts, peanut butter, peanut butter sandwiches, vegetable salads mixed with peanut sauce, peanut-based dipping sauce, peanut butter crackers, mandelonas (peanuts soaked in almond flavoring), some health food bars, some breakfast cereals, peanut butter cookies, celery sticks filled with peanut butter, honey peanut steamed tea bread, cherry peanut granola, peanut squares, peanut butter crisps, trail mixes, some spaghetti sauces, boiled peanuts, peanut butter spread on toast, gorp (good old raisins and peanuts), Cajun flavored peanuts, peanut soup, peanut rolls, peanut muffins, peanut cake, peanut pudding, baked peanuts with rice, and peanut stuffing.

The following foods contain tofu, and can be served without meats and seafood: tofu with vegetable medley, tofu muffins, tofu and cheese omelet, sauteed tofu steak, tofu caramel custard, tofu anmitsu (traditional fruit salad), broiled tofu steak, tomato and olive tofu spread, braised cubed tofu steak with eggplant and zucchini, tofu steak with teriyaki butter sauce, tofu steak sandwich, tofu steak with salsa sauce, tofu steak nuggets, tofu steak fajita, tofu steak with Asian mushroom sauce, tofu and egg burger, tofu and vegetable burger, tofu burger, tofu quesadilla, oriental tofu salad, split pea soup with tofu, creamy oriental tofu dressing, tofu broccoli lasagna, grilled tofu and cheese, tofu spaghetti sauce, Spanish rice with tofu, tofu and vegetable stir-fry, zesty Italian pasta and tofu, spicy tofu chili, spicy tofu burritos, Tex-Mex tofu lasagna, pita stuffed tofu salad, tofu custard filled cake, pineapple tofu pie, and tofu custard with sesame flavor.

Attempting brevity, I only brainstormed gout-safe high-protein foods containing cheese, buckwheat, peanuts, and tofu. If I were to include gout-safe high-protein foods containing milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, amaranth grain, quinoa, almonds, cashews, pecans, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, soy milk, beans, soy beans, and split peas, I would end up writing a novel. Though I only focused on foods containing cheese, buckwheat, peanuts, and tofu, you can see that there is plenty of variety.

Warnings, Interactions, and Side Effect

Gout attacks can be cured by following the dietary changes suggested here. However, please keep in mind that it is easier to prevent gout attacks than intervene in the middle of gout attacks. So it is best to use the suggested dietary changes proactively rather than reactively.

Some foods suggested here can dangerously interact with some prescription drugs or medical conditions. For example, eating cheese while taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can kill you. Also, drinking red wine while having liver cirrhosis can worsen your condition. So to be on the safe side, you should get the approval of your physician and pharmacist before following the suggested dietary changes.

Gout-prone people can have a side effect from aspirin. Though normal people can take aspirin without having a side effect, gout-prone people can have the side effect of a gout attack. So if you are gout-prone and have a headache, it is best that you take Motrin (ibuprofen) instead of Bayer (aspirin).

Summary

Though prescription drugs such as allopurinol prevent gout attacks, some people prefer a more natural prevention. This article outlines a gout prevention plan, consisting of protein substitution, alcoholic beverage substitution, and taking high-dose vitamin C supplements. This article proposes that dietary changes alone can prevent gout attacks.

EFT Tapping Cures Extreme Chronic Acid Reflux

EFT Cured Extreme Chronic Acid Reflux in Two Sessions

A lot of you may know that emotional stress often underlies any number of physical pains and illnesses, and that if you can find a way to deal with the emotional stress, it relieves the physical illness.

I had a client a few years ago-we’ll call her Sally-who, for 2 years in the recent past, had suffered from severe acid reflux due to irritable bowel disease, so bad that she was hospitalized several times. It had started happening again in the last few months. What would happen is that her stomach would start to burn and then the burning would rise up through her esophagus and throat and, every time, she would end up vomiting. It was extremely painful. This was happening a lot again lately. Doctors had tried several medications but nothing helped. They were out of ideas. Sally was open to EFT Tapping, an energy psychology.

EFT Works for Physical Pain and Illnesses

I specialize in a method called EFT-Emotional Freedom Techniques-which is extremely effective with stress, trauma, PTSD and often with physical pain and illnesses. It also works really well for phobias and fears, anxieties, allergies, addictions, weight issues, and physical and emotional after-effects of injuries and accidents.

How EFT Works

Researchers have discovered that physical pain is often the result of stress, which makes sense, because, when our nervous system is stressed or traumatized, one of the ways this manifests is physical pain. For example, our muscles might cramp, our stomach might hurt, we might get headaches, or burning feelings, etc. So, if we can calm the nervous system, it often leads to pain disappearing. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is great for that. We tap on energy meridians (it’s like acupuncture without the needles!), while focusing on the emotional pain underlying the physical pain. EFT Tapping is more effective than many other modalities because it also deals with the parts of us that might be afraid of making changes.

Anger-the Underlying Emotional Pain

When she first came in, Sally mentioned that she was going to visit a relative we’ll call John, to whom she used to be very close. This person was her best friend and had helped her through the craziness of her family during childhood. But now John was very jealous of her for a number of reasons and so they argued a lot. Sally was angry at John and full of anxiety.

As she was talking about this, her stomach started burning!

We started EFT Tapping, focusing on the anger. The burning lessened, and she noticed that now she was aware she was sad that she couldn’t share with John and that she was actually giving up on him. This was a huge loss for her.

Sadness-the Second Underlying Emotional Pain

We did some more EFT Tapping, this time on the sense of sadness and loss around giving up on the relationship. The burning stopped!

She Had Never Been Able to Stop the Burning Once it Started

But this time, it stopped. She felt like things were shifting inside her. She cried, because she was so moved that this time, the burning didn’t get worse and worse, rise up in her throat, and make her vomit. It just stopped!

Getting to the Emotional Cause Cured Acid Reflux

At a follow-up appointment, Sally said that, every time the burning started, she was able to stop it by just beginning EFT Tapping. She didn’t even have to go through the whole sequence of tapping. After several times of tapping on her own, the burning never even started again. In a few other sessions, we worked on another physical illness, which was also cured. The acid reflux never came back.

Early pregnancy Symptom refers to the sign that indicates whether a woman is pregnant or not. Irrespective of the fact whether you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, you always wish to know the reality at the earliest. Early pregnancy symptom becomes important when one does not have the enough patience of waiting up to the menstruation period. These kinds of women find it difficult to wait after the ovulation and they wish to know whether they are having pregnancy or not.

Body Is An Excellent Indicator Of The Pregnancy

These impatient people may surprise to know that their body indicates early pregnancy symptom. With a careful observation of the pregnancy week by week you will find that the body is really an excellent indicator of the pregnancy. However, early pregnancy symptom begins to appear at different times in different women. According to the pregnancy journal in some women early pregnancy symptom may appear within few days after the conception. On the other hand, it may take few weeks before appearing in some other cases.

Nausea Or Vomiting

Nausea or vomiting is one early pregnancy symptom that appears in the very early stages of the pregnancy. This is also known more popularly as morning sickness. There are instances when this early pregnancy symptom occurred so early that the women could not realize it and thought that this is happening because of the food poisoning or cold effect. Nausea happens because the ability of sensing the smell and taste of the pregnant women gets increased and she can feel the sensation of nausea even with the smell of tea and coffee.

Increases Frequency of Urination

Frequent urination is another early pregnancy symptom. This symptom also appears in the early stages of the pregnancy. In most of the cases frequent urination starts within one week of getting pregnant. You may have to go to the toilet again and again even during the night. In addition, you will observe that you are getting tired much early as compared to when you were normal.

Breast Enlargement And Missed Period

One more early pregnancy symptom is enlargement of the size of the breast and nipples. This is very common symptom and most of the women also report tenderness of the breast when they get pregnant. This very early symptom is an indication that the body is getting ready for the breastfeeding. On most of the occasions when any woman misses her period then it works as an early pregnancy symptom for her. However, during the period of the pregnancy you may feel sudden and painful tightening of the muscles giving you the sensation that the period is about to come. Along with this cramping of the muscles you will also experience back pain during this period.

Diabetic Coma Can Be Fatal For Diabetics

Diabetic coma blood sugar level should be avoided. Why? Because any blood sugar level over 500, but usually over 600mg, causes diabetic coma. It will likely occur when blood sugars are at this unusually high levels and the body becomes severely dehydrated as a result.

If you are 60 years old or above this should be your primary concern. When dehydrated, the elderly may have a distorted sense of thirst. Perhaps this is because they have less sensitivity to thirst that is affected due to age. In many cases, a history of excess thirst and urination may manifest in the elderly. This may happen weeks before diagnosis. Excess urination and extreme blood glucose levels lead to body cells being dehydrated. Thus, the body will become dehydrated. This severe loss of body fluids can lead to shock, coma, and death.

Another group who are particularly at risk is the chronically ill and disabled. This group on the other hand cannot sense their thirst or may be even be able to communicate. Dehydration may occur for a period but unless they are given continuous medical care, it may be manifest itself until it is too late.

Diabetic coma is also known as “hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome”. If a type II diabetic patient is ill, this is a very serious problem, perhaps even a fatal one. Fatality rates in these circumstances can reach 50%.

To be sure, there are many causes of diabetic coma, not just extremely high sugar levels. These may include:

Infection;

Heart attack;

Kidney failure;

Medicines (diuretics, heart medication, or steroids);

Illness;

Bleeding ulcer;

Blood clot; and

Uncontrolled blood sugar

If you are a diabetic, and you monitored extremely high blood glucose levels, there are greater chances that you can have diabetic coma, more so if it is complicated by one or more of the above causes. Unfortunately, the other causes listed above are also common among diabetic patients. It is therefore extremely important that you constantly monitor your blood sugar levels.

Diabetic coma symptoms may be manifested earlier than the diagnosis, perhaps weeks prior to the diagnosis. If you are in the vulnerable group, (e.g. diabetic, 60 years old or over, disabled) you should be very vigilant of the following symptoms:

Increased thirst;

Increased urination;

Weakness;

Drowsiness;

Altered mental state;

Headache;

Restlessness;

Inability to speak; and

Paralysis

If any of the symptoms manifest in your situation, you should test your blood glucose. Then, depending on the results of the test, you should immediately consult your doctor. More so if your test reveals blood sugar level of 600 mg/dl or more.

Now, how do you prevent diabetic coma? The following are simple suggestions:

Check your blood sugar regularly;

Check your blood sugar every four hours when you are sick;

Take special care of yourself when you are sick; and

Eat and live healthy.

Simple measures you can do yourself so you need not worry about complications brought about by diabetic coma blood sugar level.

Acid Reflux Cure – Effective and Permanent Natural Treatment

Excess acid present in the stomach which regurgitates into the esophagus called as acid reflux, it is caused by many reasons and effective and early treatment to cure it permanently protects from serious complications it can initiate in human body. Excess acid once in sometime or for few minutes in a day may not be serious issue to health as acid is an important part of the digestive system but frequent occurrence of excess acid and it regurgitation in esophagus is problem which requires serious attention. Frequent acid reflux can damage esophageal lining which makes swallowing difficult; it causes dry coughing, chest pain with heartburn, chronic cough which can even initiate asthma and sinusitis.

Like other health disorders even it is not caused due to one single reason hence for permanent and effective treatment one has to identify the root cause of the problem and treat it with the use of remedies which provide immediate relief as well as help the body in preventing recurrence of the problem. Diet, life style and eating habits including type of food one eats and digestive disorders, all can contribute singularly or collectively to promote acid formation and acid reflux.

Sometimes none of the above reason may be responsible for acid reflux; it is just that particular food is intolerable to the digestive system which creates the problem. To eradicate such problem a food diary shall be maintained to identify the problem creating diet. Medicines can also cause acidity particularly diuretic medicines like the ones taken for high blood pressure, diabetic patients also suffer from excess acid due to high sugar content in the blood.

Water consumption in sufficient quantity should be ensured not only for countering acid reflux but also for good over all health, increased intake of fruits like guava, apples, melon, avocado, papaya, figs, banana, cucumber and pear are very good at keeping digestive system smooth and controlling acid secretion. Eating small and regular meals in place of large two or three meals is beneficial. Spicy and fried food shall be avoided along with tea, coffee, alcohol and beverages.

Drinking cold milk with minimum amount of sugar is an instant remedy for curing acid reflux as it helps the body in digesting the excess acid and regulating gas in the stomach. Consuming apple cider vinegar two teaspoon mixed in a glass of water also works as effective treatment for curing the problem of acid reflux. Fennel seeds are good mouth freshener and also very good digestive aid; it also prevents excessive acid formation.

Tea made up of lavender seeds and aniseeds is also very beneficial in curing acid reflux and it can be used instead of traditional tea for maximum benefit, one teaspoon each of these seeds can be mixed with a glass of water and boiled for few minutes, later after cooling and straining the mixture it shall be consumed. Ginger is an excellent herb for all sorts of digestive problems including acid reflux. Ginger tea, a piece of ginger consumed after meals or use of ginger in cooking or in raw form in salad can be of immense help and a permanent treatment to cure acid reflux.

The Signs of Heartburn

You may recognize the signs of heartburn, but sometimes it is hard to recognize what caused the heartburn. The first thing you may think is “what did I eat?” In some cases, it may not be food causing heartburns and/or indigestion. It may be beverages or stress. It may not be what you eat, but how much you eat. While spicy foods may bring on signs of heartburn. It may be hard to avoid eating spicy food, causing heartburns and indigestion.

Typical signs of heartburn include a burning sensation in the back of the throat. The burning may be lower, closer to the top of the stomach. It may start as a feeling of being overly full. A warm feeling in the stomach may accompany a tickle in the throat. Some people only feel the tickle and the tickle may lead to coughing. You may or may not feel bloated. The burning sensation may be accompanied by burping or passing gas. Any of these may be signs of heartburn or indigestion.

Once you notice the signs of heartburn, identifying the food causing heartburns may be the last thing on your mind. Typically, you just want relief, but it could be important to help prevent future attacks to at least make a mental note of what you ate or drank in the past hour or so. Some people are bothered by nighttime heartburn. Sometimes the signs of heartburn do not wake the person up, but acid and gas in the esophagus can interfere with respiration and lead to breathing difficulties, even bringing on asthma attacks. There are specially designed foam wedges for those who experience the signs of heartburn at night. By sleeping in a reclining, rather than a prone position, stomach acid is less likely to leak up into the esophagus. People who eat late meals or go to bed soon after dinner are more likely to experience signs of heartburn while sleeping or trying to sleep. Sometimes the symptoms and signs of heartburn are enough to interfere with a good night’s sleep, which in turn leads to reduced energy levels during the day. Studies have shown that people who drink soft drinks before bed are more likely to have signs of heartburn or acid reflux at night. Carbonated and caffeinated beverages often bring on or increase signs of heartburn. The carbonation may help you burp, which gives a feeling of temporary relief, but soft drinks are highly acidic. Anything that increases stomach acid can increase the symptoms and signs of heartburn.

The innocent tomato is a food causing heartburns in many people. Tomatoes are highly acidic food. Eating one with your dinner salad may not cause a problem, depending on the other vegetables and the type of dressing used. If you can achieve a balance of foods that are less acidic with foods that are more acidic, then you may be able to prevent the signs of heartburn. Another food causing heartburns is oranges. Oranges and other citrus fruits are highly acidic. So adding mandarin orange slices to your dinner salad may seem healthy, but can increase likelihood that you will experience signs of heartburn. On the other hand, baked or grilled chicken is typically not a food causing heartburns. So, use the tomatoes, lettuce, skip the oranges and onions and add warm grilled chicken strips to your salad. Choose to use little or no dressing, oil and vinegar are both highly acidic, try just some salt and pepper and maybe a little ginger. Gingerroot is commonly used in natural products to relieve the symptoms and signs of heartburn.

Compression Support Stockings: 5 Professionals That Should Wear Them

Most professionals today are expected to sit or stand in one position for long periods, which can result in tired, achy and swollen legs, or more serious issues, including edema or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Usually people think of compression support stockings remedying painful illnesses, but professionals are starting to wear compression socks to relieve general leg fatigue and soreness, and for preventative leg health.

What Are Compression Socks?

Compression support stockings are specially-designed hosiery or socks made with extra strong elastic fibers. The fibers get the blood pumping by squeezing around the ankle, which gets your muscles and veins to return unoxygenated blood to the heart. Compression support stockings apply graduated compression, which means compression is fully applied at the ankle and decreases farther up the leg.

Anybody required to sit or stand for long hours will benefit from wearing compression socks, especially:

1. Cooks and Chefs

A chef’s job is grueling; they spend their days in a bustling kitchen, mostly standing or walking on hard surfaces. After a full workday, the most comfortable shoes can’t help the aches and fatigue that develop. Over time, the veins weaken and have difficulty returning blood to the heart and lungs. Consequently, blood can pool in the lower leg, which increases fatigue and swelling. When chefs wear compression socks, it helps improve blood flow, relieve pressure on aggravated veins, prevent further vein damage, and alleviate pain.

2. Food Servers

Like chefs, servers are always on the go, carrying heavy trays. Tired, achy legs can be a huge problem, but compression support stockings can provide relief. Full-length compression support stockings apply graduated pressure from ankle to thigh, to keep the blood circulating, which alleviates the pain and fatigue of a long shift. Knee high compression socks are popular, too, because they prevent swollen ankles, match any uniform, and are more convenient.

3. Health Care Professionals

Nurses and other health care workers also spend long hours on their feet, and often experience leg swelling, fatigue or varicose veins. Compression socks can increase circulation and alleviate these problems. In a recent study, 31 nurses were given knee-high compression socks and instructed to keep a record of any leg swelling or other symptoms they experienced during their shift. About 84% of the nurses reported improvement in their symptoms after wearing compression socks, and 74% saw decreases in swelling.

4. Airline Attendants

Confined movement on an airplane also decreases leg circulation, increasing the risk of DVT, or blood clots that can potentially cause a pulmonary embolism. Compression support stockings can help both travelers and flight attendants who spend long hours in the air, reducing leg fatigue, pain and swelling. Sometimes it’s possible for flight attendants to get their insurance to pay for their compression support stockings.

5. Computer Programmers

Extended periods of sitting is just as bad for the legs as standing, which particularly increases risk of DVT. After sitting all day, many programmers and other computer users find their legs are as achy as if they had been standing. By wearing compression socks at work, programmers will improve their circulation so when they finally get up and walk around, their legs will feel energized and ready to go.

Lower Blood Pressure At Any Cost? – 5 Hypertension Myths

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects at least one in three adults in North America and many other developed countries. Even more alarmingly, it is afflicting an increasing number of young people, some as young as 12 years old. So it’s not surprising that hypertension medications are among the 10 most frequently prescribed drugs.

With an issue of such importance, it’s critical to get the facts right and to keep things in perspective. Unfortunately, a number of myths have developed around hypertension. Here are five of the most common and potentially damaging misconceptions:

Myth 1: High blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Not necessarily. There is no direct connection between high blood pressure and heart problems. In a recent article for the Virginia Hopkins Health Watch, John R. Lee, M.D. writes: “heart problems (due to high blood pressure) are not correlated with any specific or absolute blood pressure reading; it is correlated with an observed rise in blood pressure from whatever the earlier blood pressure was”. (italics mine)

In other words, if your blood pressure is normally around 120/80 and rises to 140/90 your risk of heart problems is about the same as that of someone whose blood pressure increases from 140/90 to 160/90. It also means that if your blood pressure is a steady 160/90 and shows no sign of rising, it is not a sign of impending heart disease without other risk factors involved.

Myth 2: “Normal”, healthy blood pressure is in the range of 120/70. Pressure above 130/80 is either high blood pressure or “pre-hypertension”.

What is normal? For a long time the medical standard for high blood pressure was considered 140/90 and this was further moderated by age. But suddenly the standard was changed. Now some doctors call even 130/80 “high blood pressure” and many others consider it “pre-hypertension”. New medications to treat “pre-hypertension” are even underway!

The fact is that blood pressure varies widely among healthy people and usually increases with age. Many things can increase blood pressure including over-the-counter and prescription medications, stress and over-indulgence in alcohol.

Add to this the fact that blood pressure varies, sometimes significantly, at different times of the day. Then there’s the notorious white-coat syndrome whereby the stress of a doctor’s visit shows up as high blood pressure while readings taken relaxing at home can be “normal”.

These examples all go to show that just getting an accurate reading can be difficult enough, let alone setting normal and abnormal levels for a wide range of different people.

Myth 3. If you are hypertensive you must severely restrict or eliminate salt (or sodium) from your diet.

Not true. Salt is unfairly blamed for causing high blood pressure. Salt, or sodium, is not the culprit. It’s an imbalance of sodium, magnesium and potassium in our diet that knocks our blood chemistry out of kilter and thus contributes to hypertension.

The problem is that many processed and junk foods are high in salt but deficient in magnesium and potassium. This is compounded when you add table salt to your already salty bacon at breakfast.

But the answer is not to become paranoid about salt but to eat whole, natural foods (and you can even take that with a grain of salt!). Grains, vegetables, fruit, meat and fish in their natural state contain more balanced amounts of sodium, magnesium and potassium. Simply eating a healthy diet of whole foods can have a dramatic effect on blood pressure. Hypertension is almost unknown among the few remaining peoples that still eat in this way.

Myth 4. Taking blood pressure medications is better than the alternative.

Only in a minority of cases and as a last resort!

It’s no surprise when you hear natural health gurus claim that drugs are worse than the disease. But you really take notice when it’s a medical doctor saying it! That’s exactly the case when Dr. Lee writes in the same article quoted above: “I don’t like anti-hypertensive drugs because their side effects are often worse than the high blood pressure they’re prescribed to treat.” (his bolding) He goes on to say: “conventional physicians tend to prescribe anti-hypertension drugs any time blood pressure readings fall outside of so-called normal ranges. This is unjustified, and probably does more harm than good in the long run”.

All categories of blood pressure drugs have side effects and these have been minimized by doctors and the pharmaceutical industry. For example, some hypertension medications can contribute to ischemia whereby tissues are damaged due to insufficient blood supply. Others cause erectile dysfunction. Still others can result in low blood pressure, which has implications just as serious as high blood pressure. These are only some of the potential dangers of blood pressure medication. See Dr. Lee’s article for a more complete discussion.

Myth 5. Lifestyle changes are not usually enough to reverse high blood pressure. Therefore, prompt drug intervention is advisable.

Exactly the opposite is true. The best way to maintain healthy blood pressure is always through lifestyle, including diet and exercise. If you are seriously overweight or out of shape, if you smoke or over-drink, or if you’re under severe stress, a positive change in these factors is bound to have a dramatic effect on your blood pressure, regardless of how high it is.

The problem is that many doctors have come to believe that their patients are unlikely to make the changes needed. This is one of the reasons they over-prescribe medications or intervene too quickly. It’s almost become a preventive measure for them. But the fact is that most people will make the effort to improve their lifestyles if given the right support (and especially if given accurate information about the side effects and dangers of hypertension drugs!).

In the rare case in which your blood pressure fails to respond to lifestyle improvements it’s time to look beyond the usual suspects such as weight and diet. There are several other areas that are rarely examined but which can wreak havok on your blood pressure. For example, are you suffering from hidden stress? Some people have been chronically stressed for so long they don’t even recognize it any longer. It’s become their “natural” state.

What about your breathing? Yes, your breathing! Often together with high stress, people develop what some experts are calling “inhibitory breathing”. It constricts blood vessels by increasing muscle tension and may also unbalance blood chemistry. A new technique called slow breathing with music can do wonders to lower blood pressure through breathing.

It just goes to show that there’s more to lifestyle than you may think. If you are frustrated that your changes are not making a difference you may need to dig deeper.

Conclusions:

1. High blood pressure is a serious condition that demands attention but there’s no need to panic, especially if otherwise healthy. A significant and sustained rise in your blood pressure is of much greater concern than the actual numbers themselves.

2. There is a wide range of healthy blood pressure. Watch out for white-coat syndrome and determine your normal blood pressure in a relaxed state. Then watch out for sustained increases from this level.

3. It’s not about salt. There are no “evil” or “miracle” foods! Eat a balanced and varied diet of whole, natural foods. A modest magnesium supplement of 300 to 400 mg might not be a bad idea either.

4. If you are healthy and have no other risk factors, take medications only as a last resort. Give lifestyle at least a six-month chance. Don’t ignore medical advice but if your doctor is too rigid seek a second opinion.

5. Healthy blood pressure is maintained through lifestyle. If your blood pressure is a problem then something is almost certainly out of whack. Look deeper if you don’t find an obvious answer.

Congestive Cardiac Failure – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Congestive cardiac failure (CCF), also known as congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart’s function as a pump to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body is inadequate to meet the body’s needs. CCF can be caused by coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, long standing alcohol abuse and disorders of the heart valves. Fatigue; swelling of the ankles and legs or abdomen; breathlessness; increased urination, especially at night; nausea; abdominal pain; and decreased appetite are common symptoms of this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of CCF is aimed at improving the efficiency of the heart, reducing the load on the heart and treating any potentially reversible causes of this disease. The efficiency of the heart is increased by using medicines like Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Makar-Dhwaj- Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani and Abhrak-Bhasma. Coronary artery disease, leading to a reduced blood supply to the heart muscles, can be corrected by using medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Triphala-Guggulu, Medohar-Guggulu and Chandraprabha-Vati. Weak heart muscles can be strengthened using medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Arjun (Terminalia arjuna), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta). Disorders of the valves of the heart can be partially corrected using medicines like Laxadi-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Dashmoolarishta and Arjunarishta.

It is very important to control high blood pressure, since this puts a continuous strain on the heart muscles. Medicines like Sarpagandha (Raulwofia serpentina), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Dhamasa (Fagonia cretica) and Sutshekhar-Ras can be used for this purpose. Alcohol abuse can make the heart muscles weak, and also cause destruction in the liver, thereby resulting in CCF. This can be treated using medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Shankh-Vati, Bhunimbadi-Qadha, Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa) and Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea). The load on the heart can be reduced using medicines like Punarnavadi-Qadha, Gokshuradi-Qadha, Yav-Kshar, Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera) and Ikshumool (Saceharum officinarum).

A judicious combination of Ayurvedic medicines can thus be used to control CCF and improve the overall survival of patients affected with this condition. It is important to adopt adequate lifestyle modifications for this disease. Daily salt and fluid intake needs to be restricted. Regular exercise in moderation is beneficial for CCF. A complete abstinence from alcohol and smoking is important to avoid further damage to the heart. Stress needs to be minimized by adopting suitable relaxation techniques.
