Frequently Asked Questions About Ringworm

In much of the United States, spring is just around the corner, and spring is the time of year children get ringworm. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about this common fungal condition.

Q. What are ringworms?

A. Actually, ringworms aren’t worms, and the noun isn’t used as a plural. Ringworm (known in the medical literature as Tinea captis) is a fungal infection of the skin, related to athlete’s foot, that causes a characteristic round rash. It usually starts as a pimple and grows outward. It can make the skin scaly and the hair brittle, brittle enough to break off leaving a temporary bald spot. There are many strains of ringworm, and the species causing infections in the United States (T. tonsurans) is the most likely to leave a bald spot.

The ringworm fungus gets it start on dead skin. Simply exfoliating with a gentle cleanser and warm water every day cuts down on ringworm infection.

Q. What about raw vinegar for ringworm?

A. The thing about raw vinegar for ringworm is, it goes on you, not in you. Dilute a quarter-cup (60 ml) of vinegar in three-quarters cup (180 ml) of warm water and dab on the affected area three times a day. If you don’t want to smell like pickles, be sure to rinse the vinegar off your skin after it’s been allowed to set for about 5 minutes. Improvement should be visible in 2-3 days.

Q. How often do people get ringworm?

A. Less than 1% of the population in developed countries has ringworm at any given time, although some areas of Southeast Asia have local infection rates of up to 14%. In North America, ringworm outbreaks mostly occur among children aged 6 to 10 and is passed around at school. The strains of ringworm that occur in the Middle East are passed between family members of all ages.

Q. What can you tell me about ringworm medication? Diabetes is my main health problem.

A. When it comes to ringworm medication, diabetes is a concern primarily because it is associated with dry skin. But you’d need skin moisturizers no matter what. In diabetic children, the natural remedies for healing ringworm are the same as for non-diabetic children.

About medications, the thing about prescription medication is that it’s for use in you, not on you, the opposite of natural remedies of healing ringworm. If you have chronic hair loss, a medication your physician prescribes, like griseofulvin, will hold the fungus at bay inside the hair shaft long enough for new keratin to grow around the hair follicle.

If you don’t have hair loss yet, herbal remedies may actually be more effective. Tea tree oil, in an 8-20% cream, rubbed on the skin three times a day may stop the progression of ringworm into the hair follicle.

What you need to know about tea tree oil is, it does more to improve symptoms than to kill ringworm at the source–but if the fungus is just munching away on dead skin that’s flaking off, you don’t care. Clinical trials have shown that tea tree oil is superior to at least one medication (tolnaftate) in controlling itching, inflammation, scaling, and redness, while the prescription Rx is better at killing the fungus. It is possible to use both.

Q. How do you treat ringworm on children?

A. Natural remedies for healing ringworm are the same for children and adults, except you do want to be very sure not use pure tea tree oil with children. (Creams are always preferable.) Additionally, it’s a good idea to make sure children don’t share combs or bed linens, and that you wash you hands every time you help your child wash or groom.

Q. What’s the difference between ringworm and impetigo?

A. Ringworm itches, impetigo hurts. Hair falls out in ringworm, but hair stays put in impetigo.

Ringworm is never fatal, and is usually easily controlled. Just be sure to avoid reinfection by washing hands, clothes, towels, bed lines, and children frequently to stop the spread of the infection.

Food Allergies and Your Metabolism

Elson M. Haas, M.D. believes that food reactions harm the metabolism more than any other factor. Food Reactions, to your allergic foods, make it easy to gain weight and hard to lose it. Food reactions affect your metabolism, and your ability to lose weight or not, in four major ways:

  1. Allergic Foods slow down your metabolism because they block the absorption of nutrients and because they affect your thyroid. They will block the absorption of nutrients, including essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids increase your metabolism so blocking their absorption will decrease (or slow) your metabolism and your body will then be more likely to store fat. Food allergies can also make your thyroid malfunction and then you will gain weight.
  2. Allergic Foods can increase hormones that cause weight gain. These hormones include insulin, cortisol, and eicosanoids. If food allergies cause your body to create more insulin then your body will store more fat. If food allergies cause your body to produce less insulin then you will feel hungrier and want to eat more. Food allergies (and stress) can increase the amount of cortisol that your body produces. As cortisol levels increase, the levels of fat-burning enzymes decrease, causing weight gain. Food allergies can increase the production of eicosanoids, which inhibit the burning of adipose tissue and ultimately cause weight gain.
  3. Allergic Foods can create hypoglycemia which, in turn, creates food cravings and weight gain.
  4. Allergic Foods make you feel sick and tired. They can cause asthma, earaches, leg pains, ADD, ADHD, stomach aches, canker sores, diarrhea, headaches, moodiness, constipation, frequent colds, insomnia, food cravings, fibromyalgia, eczema, dermatitis, colitis, ulcerative colitis, colic, diverticulitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, chronic colds, sinusitis, psoriasis, dry skin, PMS, menstrual cramps, eating disorders, chronic pain, arthritis, chronic ear infections, acne, diabetes, and more! When you have any of these symptoms you just don’t have the energy or motivation to do what you need to do to lose weight.

Weight Loss and Weight Gain Solution Now that you are more aware of how your body’s metabolism is negatively affected by your food allergies the solution is simple: get tested for food intolerances and stop eating your allergic foods! Okay, I said the solution is simple but I never said that the solution is easy.

Weight Loss Success To succeed at losing weight you must:

  • identify your food sensitivities
  • eliminate your food intolerances from your diet
  • make your health your priority by making time to shop for allergy-free food and prepare allergy-free food.

Anxiety and Depersonalization Caused By Pre-Workout Supplements

There is a great deal of hype connected with pre-workout supplements and their ability to boost the effects of an exercise routine. They claim to enhance energy, physical capabilities and build greater muscle mass, changing a normal workout session into a “super” workout. The problem with these promises is the fact that these stimulants actually create more physical and emotional difficulties than the benefits they promise.

The majority of these stimulants contain massive doses of caffeine along with a laundry list of sub-standard ingredients. This may seem innocuous to those hoping for miraculous results but in reality these pre-workout supplements are more than often quite dangerous, especially to those who are stimulant sensitive. The problem is that most are unaware of their own reactivity to these substances until they find themselves in the midst of intense adverse reactions.

Common Adverse Reactions to Pre-Workout Supplements:

– Severe Anxiety

– Intensive Depersonalization

– Hallucinations

– Convulsions

– Heart Rhythm Abnormalities

– Heart Attack

– Tremors

– Addiction, Dependency

– Palpitations

– Irritability, Mood Swings

– Inability to Focus

– Adrenal Fatigue

– Racing Thoughts

– Hair loss

– Memory Impairment

– Sexual Dysfunction

After prolonged use, a great toll is taken on the adrenal glands as they are forced to produce large quantities of energy producing adrenaline. This eventually culminates in adrenal fatigue when the adrenals fail to manufacture enough adrenaline for the individual to function properly. The result being, extreme fatigue, nervousness and heightened anxiety levels. The overload on the adrenal glands must be immediately addressed and treated with a specific, natural approach in order to rebuild and restore complete function of these glands.

One often becomes tolerant to these stimulants requiring higher dosages to receive the same so-called benefits. After prolonged use the individual finds himself using far too much, too often, becoming dependent on these “supplements” for normal energy on a daily basis.

There is also the problem of withdrawal symptoms when halting the use of these stimulants.

Upon Discontinuation of Pre-Work-out Supplements one may initially experience:

– Fatigue

– Headaches

– Craving for the Stimulants

– Mood Swings of great intensity

– Severe Depression

– Intense Hunger

– Mental Confusion

– Initial Increase in Anxiety, Depersonalization and Racing Thoughts

– Extreme Insomnia

– Adrenal Burnout

One must not resort to taking more stimulants in order to counter these reactions. This action will only prolong recovery and add to already damaged adrenals. Instead, one must learn to naturally counter these reactions by beginning a program based upon treating impaired adrenals.

This Adrenal Fatigue Treatment approach includes:

– Sufficient rest, re-establishing sleep patterns, insomnia treatment

– Proper diet/nutrition correction

– Moderation in exercise

– Slow withdrawal from any existing stimulants

– Natural Treatment of Anxiety, Depersonalization and Depression

One must not be tricked into believing more stimulants will alleviate symptoms, as the required correction is the exact opposite. The adrenals require time and patience to repair, rather than an increase in stimulants which only hamper recovery.

Most of all, one must be aware of the hype connected to these supplements, which in reality are merely massive stimulants that have become highly commercialized. The internet is saturated with bogus, glowing reports about these products, preying on and victimizing young people to purchase under false pretenses. Consumer beware by knowing and understanding fully what these chemicals will do to your system and the long road one must take in order to rebuild a truly healthy mind and body.

True Cause of Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression) – Mental Illness Research

This information is offered for educational purposes only and is not intended to serve as medical advice. The information provided should not be used for diagnosing or treating a health problem or disease. It is not a substitute for professional care. If your child, teen, or you have any health concerns, please consult your health care provider.

Bipolar patients live on a subconsciously self-controlled mental and emotional “roller coaster.”

They rise high and take flight on fantastic hopes and plans that are nearly impossible to achieve. They generate excessive amounts of nervous psychic energy and soar with confidence and optimism. This is a manic state.

In a manic state, they see themselves as powerful or indestructible. They usually display high self-esteem. Bipolar patients become extremely talkative and flooded with ideas, require little rest or sleep, and are unfocused and easily distracted and sidetracked.

“Highs” can result in serious problems such as unreasonable spending, impulsive and thoughtless decisions, participating in unsafe sexual behavior and, often, over indulging in street drugs, alcohol, or sleep and other medications.

In a relatively short while, a bipolar will inevitably crash. After his or her unrealistic hopes, dreams, and objectives fail to materialize, the person sink into depression and despair.

We can all recall having a similar “up and down” experience. However, the bipolar patient has these severe mood swings to an extreme and on a regular basis.

Psychiatrists and physicians treat bipolar patients with combinations of costly psychiatric drugs that they recommend be taken for the person’s entire lives. Treatment is supplemented with some type of talking therapy. Symptoms are controlled but not healed.

Bipolar treatments do not heal because essentially the cause of the disorder is wrongly assumed to be “biological” when, in fact, the cause is “psychological.”

Bipolar patients live in a state of extreme “selfish reaction” and “selfish control.” That happens to be true for all those suffering a serious mental and emotional disorder.

How symptoms vary, relate to personal subconscious factors such as the person’s basic selfish disposition (angry or fearful), the specifics of the person’s child-to-parent negative agreements, and the degree of personal selfishness and selfish reaction.

Bipolar sufferers are deeply troubled and in extreme reaction to their abusive and unloving childhood experiences.

They use hyperactivity as a way of avoiding and running from, also concealing, their ongoing negative inner psychological states.

As with typical incest survivors, they are experts at maneuvering and controlling others to get what they selfishly want. They have learned from their selfish parents. It was way a way of surviving their parents’ extremely controlling, abusive, and sexually abusive choices.

Their range of emotions goes from getting extremely unstable or violent to seeming normal.

As bipolar individuals continue in selfish control, illusion, and reaction, they tend to get worse. Ups and downs occur with increased frequency, length of time, and seriousness.

About 20% are estimated to commit suicide. The destructive and self-destructive symptoms of bipolar disorder make “biological causes” improbable. It should be obvious that the causes are psychological and selfish.

As long as we keep refusing to deal properly with personal negative choices and realities and keep saying that the causes outside of our control, and ourselves we will suffer and never heal.

Monophobia: What Causes Monophobia?

Monophobia is a fear of being alone, it is not a particularly common phobia but it can be very debilitating for the people who have it. Like most phobias the first step to getting over it is to figure out what is causing your fear. The causes of monophobia are not all that surprising if you think about what would cause you to be afraid of being alone.

Like most phobias the causes of monophobia usually start in childhood. The most likely cause is being abandoned by a parent when you were a child. This tends to lead to a feeling of being unloved or unwanted. This leads to a feeling when we get older that people are going to leave and this causes a fear of being left alone. Basically the fear is that they won’t come back if they leave so there is a fear of being left alone.

Another common cause of monophobia is being abused as a child. Obviously the more people there are around the less likely it is that a child will be abused. This usually leads to a fear of what will happen when we are left alone. As we get older we continue to have this fear. In some cases this type of fear can start as adults. Children are of course not the only people who suffer from abuse and adults who are abused are just as likely to suffer from a fear of being alone.

It is important to keep in mind that that monophobia is not the same as not being comfortable when you are alone. There are lots of people who are uncomfortable by themselves, particularly if they have never had to do it before. Most people tend to grow up surrounded by family members so it can be frightening when they move out on their own and don’t have anybody around. In some very rare cases this can lead to monophobia however it rarely rises to this level. Most people are uncomfortable when they are first left alone but it usually doesn’t take that long to get used to it.

The important difference between monophobia and just not being comfortable by yourself is whether or not there are panic attacks. If you actually have a phobia there will be physical symptoms in the form of a panic attack when you are left alone. If you do not experience these you do not have a phobia, you may still have an issue that needs to be addressed but it is not monophobia.

Monophobia can have a serious impact on your life so if you suffer from it you are going to want to take steps to address. Having to always have other people around can seriously limit the things that you are able to do. Getting over monophobia is not all that different from the way that you would address any other phobia. You will likely need the assistance of a therapist who will help you to examine the reasons for your phobia. You will also need to work on exercises to desensitize yourself to being alone.

Communication Anxiety

Anxiety is in fact a state of your mind. There are many states of the mind. The mind of a person can be in different emotional and psychological states in different parts of the year. Communication anxiety is a type of this anxiety. Anxiety may result from any kind of worry or fear. Some kinds of apprehensions also make you anxious. Anxiety is something that can create a lot of problems for the person who faces this issue a lot of times. Anxiety is something you need to learn to control. If you do not learn to control your anxiety, you will not be able to be happy at anytime. Anxiety is a feeling but in general it is associated with the physical feelings like nausea or palpitations. You may start having a headache due to anxiety and you may also face a problem of increased acidity in your stomach due to the same reason. Communication anxiety is a type of anxiety and like the other types it also needs your attention.

Anxiety is not always a very bad thing to face. Anxiety may be sometimes a really good thing. If the anxiety of a person is due to some anticipated good news, it may create a lot of satisfaction once you receive the news. If the anxiety, however, is due to some kind of issue and problem, you will not like it and the result may be lots of palpitation and a headache. Same is the situation with communication anxiety. You need to learn to tackle all kinds of anxiety.

When you are feeling communication anxiety there are some steps you need to take to control this anxiety. The first step in this regard is to let the anxiety pass after some time. Do not do anything about it and just try to keep yourself calm. Most probably if you are facing the problem of communication anxiety, it will pass. In case you are facing a lot of communication anxiety, a good way of handling it would be to tell the person you are going to communicate with that you are excited about this communication. It will also help you lower your heart beat.

Another step you need to take in this regard is to keep a check on your metabolism. Too much of palpitations and head ache is not good. Give your feelings a vent and in this way you can help yourself in controlling your communication anxiety. Think positively about the whole situation and discuss the issue carefully. This will help you control your communication anxiety.

Comprehensive Review of the "Depression Free Method" Program

The “Depression Free Method” is a downloadable healing program created by Dan Micheals. Dan Micheals suffered with depression for eight years and studied clinical psychology for ten years. And after reviewing his program, I believe that his experience and research have resulted in an informative and useful resource for individuals struggling with depression. Let me tell you why.

One-time payment of $67.95

What you get:

“Depression Free Method” E-Book (61 pgs.)

“Depression Free Method” Audio Book (2 hrs.)

“Homeopathic Remedies for Depression” E-Book (73 pgs.)

“Insomnia Relief Methods” E-Book (67 pgs.)

60 day risk-free 100% money back guarantee

While initially downloading this product I became very disappointed. My first download was the “Depression Free Method” e-book and I noticed that it was only 61 pages long. When I saw this, I got a really bad feeling that I had been ripped off. In my mind, this was going to be the “meat and potatoes” of the program, and I expected it to be at least 150 pages. I proceeded to download the rest of the program feeling a bit skeptical.

I started the program by reading the “Depression Free Method” e-book. I found the content to be informative, accurate and highly useful for healing. It addresses most of the root causes of depression: guilt, lack of self-esteem, all-or-nothing thinking, hopeless thinking, persistent sadness and more. And even more important, it provides practical solutions to overcome these core issues. The book also educates the reader about the different types of depression and provides a thorough survey of the various classes of anti-depressant medications. The book ends with a 10 step plan for recovery that is practical and can potentially lead to healing, provided that it is followed.

My favorite part of this program is the audio version of the “Depression Free Method”. I remember when I was so depressed that I couldn’t think straight. Reading was very difficult and frustrating. Yet I was able to listen to audio and process information much more easily. Looking back, this was probably because listening is a more passive, stress-free exercise and; consequently, more appealing to someone who is depressed.

In my own healing journey, audio has proven to be my most effective learning tool. I used to drive quite a bit and spent many hundreds of hours listening to self-help healing products. And I believe that the repetition alone was the main reason for my own internalization of crucial healing knowledge. For example, I can still hear Tony Robbins’ voice in my head teaching that, “The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions that you ask yourself”. Or I hear Caroline Myss emphatically teaching that, “Victims do not heal”. Or I recall Lucinda Bassett reminding me of a universal truth that we all need to accept and simply deal with, “Life is not fair.” So clearly I am a huge fan of the audio that this program provides.

Next I downloaded the “Homeopathic Remedies” and reviewed this e-book. It proved to be more useful than I initially thought it would be. Even if one is not a proponent of homeopathy, there is still useful information about depression in the first half of the book that has nothing to do with homeopathy. Actually the first half of the book is a nice supplement to the “Depression Free Method” book.

Finally I downloaded the “Insomnia Relief Methods” e-book. Insomnia was never a major problem for me, but I read the book regardless. It provides a lot of educational material about the many different causes and types of insomnia. It seems like it would be beneficial for those that struggle with insomnia in addition to depression.

Let me wrap up by stating that I endorse this program. I was highly skeptical at the outset, but after experiencing the program in its entirety, I am of the opinion that is a solid healing program. The “Depression Free Healing Program” provides individuals suffering from depression with highly useful knowledge and equips them with the necessary tools to overcome their condition. However, whether or not an individual will experience healing is entirely dependent on their willingness to absorb this knowledge and use these tools.

Cedar Shake Shingles – The Fatal Flaw

Don’t spend a dime on cedar shake shingles until you understand the “fatal flaw” inherent in wood roofing…

Wood shingles and shakes go back to colonial times when they were the roofing system of choice. They are typically made from Red Cedar. The shingles are sawn uniformly, in a few standard sizes. Shakes are split, creating a more rustic appearance, but that does require an additional course of roofing felt between each layer to help prevent leaks. Wood roofing can be installed on roofs that are 3:12 and over. They are also light weight, so they can be installed on virtually any structure.

The benefits of cedar shake shingles:

The big benefit these systems offer is their visual appeal. Few things are more attractive than their rustic appearance. They are especially beautiful when they are still fairly new, but have weathered into a natural gray. The look is so attractive that all the asphalt roofing manufacturers have architectural shingles made to look like “weathered wood”.

The problems with cedar shake shingles:

The main disadvantage with wood roofing is the inherent fire hazard. I saw an aerial photo of a neighborhood in California that had been struck by a brush fire. Every home had burnt to the ground except one. They all had wood roofs except for the one left standing, which had a tile roof. Brush fires aren’t the only fire hazard for wood roofs… Sparks from a wood-burning stove or fireplace have started many wood roofs on fire.

Insurance companies hate wood roofs, as they have been burnt so many times insuring them. Now days, they either won’t provide coverage at all, or want enormous premiums to do so. The fire risk is so great that many areas have outright banned wood roofing, despite manufacturer’s attempts to make it more fire resistant. I’m a tad dubious on how fire-resistant it actually is. Here’s why I say that…

The owner of a roofing company I used to work for liked to save dump fees by burning trash that accumulated around his warehouse and office. Almost every day he had a bonfire, burning up old pallets and such. I had just returned from cleaning up my first wood roofing project and had some scraps of the “fire-resistant” material in the back of my truck. It occurred to me to test their fire-resistance by throwing them on the bonfire. I was amazed at how fast they burst into flames.

Other disadvantages of cedar shake shingles include:

They can be extremely hazardous to walk on when wet, which they might just be when you are chasing a leak.

Wood requires periodic cleaning and treatment to keep it free of fungus.

Wood tends to curl and split, creating leaks. This is a particular problem in places like Florida, which has lots of rain, followed by lots of sun.

Cedar shake shingles are expensive. On top of a labor intensive manufacturing process, is the shipping expense. The last ones I bought here in Florida were trucked all the way down from Canada.

Installing wood shakes and shingles is labor intensive. Each one covers a fairly small area and has to be individually positioned and installed with two nails. And great care must be taken to select or cut each piece to avoid exposing nails in the course below. I once replaced a wood roof that was only three years old because the roofer screwed this up. He left exposed nails (and leaks) all over the place.

This work is somewhat of an art and is not a good do-it-yourself friendly project. I like roofing systems that are simple enough for a homeowner to successfully install himself if need be. These roofing systems also have a fairly short life span… typically 15 years or less depending on the climate. Combine that with high repair and maintenance expense, and you have huge lifecycle costs.

My opinion of cedar shake shingles:

They may have been the best choice a century or two ago, but their time has come and gone. I love the look, but the fire hazard alone is a “fatal flaw” that rules them out in my book. You can do better… for less money.

But if you choose cedar shake shingles anyway, go with a contractor who specializes in them. The correct flashing details and nail placement are critical with this system. You want a guy who does it all the time. And be sure to get the type treated with fire retardant, for whatever that’s worth. At one time I think they just sprayed it on, but the kind to get is the type where fire retardant is pressure treated deep into the wood.

You are better off going with wood shingles than shakes as they are easier to flash effectively. Also, inquire about a premium underlayment. That will help the system be more forgiving to any water that gets under the wood roofing.

Symptoms of Gout – Pre-Symptoms of Hyperuricemia

The common symptom of gout is the sudden swelling of the big toe, especially in the middle of the cold night when you are sleeping soundly. This inflamed toe gives the awful painful sensation that is unbearable. For those who experience a gout attack for the very first time, it is usually mistaken as a sprained or bruised big toe.

The symptoms of gout are very straight forward and easy to diagnose. It is usually confirmed with a blood test which indicates the elevated level of blood uric acid. There is nothing much one can do about the inflammation except taking some pain killer and anti-inflammatory drugs and then wait for the pain to go away which usually takes a few days.

Instead of focusing on the symptoms of gout, one must focus more on the PRE-symptoms of hyperuricemia (high blood uric acid) which leads to gout. The objective is to identify the potential risk of getting a gout attack and do something to avoid it before the actual attack of the gouty inflammation.

Since elevated uric acid is root cause of gout, one must know how to identify the possibility of having hyperuricemia without going through the blood test. This because there are many cases in which the blood test shows that the blood uric acid level is within the healthy range but the patient still get a gout attack.

Look, blood test can only tell the uric acid level within the blood, but not the uric acid that has already seeped out in to the interstitial fluid (space between bloodstream and cells) and in the synovial fluid of the joints. And it is those uric acid crystals that formed inside the joints that cause the gouty inflammation.

The good news is that you can actually observe certain symptoms of acidosis which are the result of long term exposure of the body cells to the acidic internal environment. Here is a short list of some of the common symptoms of acidosis with brief description:

Frequent Tiredness – When there is too much acidic toxins accumulated within the body, it impairs the blood ability in transporting the nutrients and oxygen to the cells. And when your brain cells do not receive enough supply of nutrients and oxygen, you feel tired and yawn a lot.

Low Sex Drive – Sex is a complicated process involving a series of hormones. And when your body is under the threat of acidosis, it affects the production of hormones and proper functioning of certain enzymes which resulted in the drop of sexual desire and performance.

Gastric Problem – When there is too much acids in the body, your body will utilize whatever resources available to neutralize the acids in order to maintain the pH within the safe level. One of the ways to achieve that is to stimulate the stomach wall to release more gastric juice into the stomach while releasing bicarbonate into the bloodstream to buffer up the acid in the blood.

There are more pre-symptoms of acidosis which is closely related to gout, but those 3 are the common ones. If you experiencing any of the above symptoms, you must start alkalizing your body pH by eating more alkaline food and drinking ionized alkaline water.

Kettlebell Blisters – Avoid Hand Injury From Kettlebells With These Tips

If you use kettlebells, blisters are inevitable. Beginners often end up with painful blisters after an intense session of kettlebell snatches, or when they move up in weight to a heavier bell.

Use these tips to reduce the occurrence of kettlebell blisters. Remember, unless you keep your hands injury-free, you can’t get a good kettlebell workout.

Use gloves for a while

When you start to notice that your calluses are getting painful, try wearing a pair of gloves to reduce the friction between the kettlebell handle and your hand. Although gloves are not a good long-term solution to the problem, they’re an effective stopgap measure that can mean the difference between quitting and getting a full workout.

Hand maintenance — File your calluses

When your calluses start to grow too big, you run the risk of having it tear off and expose the tender skin beneath. So, keep your calluses trimmed and level with the rest of your skin. Use a callus buffer (sometimes called a pumice stone or a foot file) to get them back under control.

It’s a good idea to soak your hand(s) in warm water before using the pumice stone. Alternatively, use the stone after you come out of the shower.

Grip it the right way

If your kettlebell technique is off, blisters are going to rear their ugly heads at some point during your training. You have to use good technique so the ‘bell isn’t sliding all over your palm and fingers, rubbing and tearing at your skin.

This is especially important during the kettlebell snatch and other overhead lifts. If you suspect your technique isn’t as good as it should be, do yourself (and your palms) a favor and brush up on proper kettlebell form.

Chalk and powder to prevent kettlebell blisters

Calluses form due to repeated friction, pressure, or irritation. Some people like to coat their hands with weightlifting chalk before going through their kettlebell workout. Chalk improves the grip, which in turn stops the bell from sliding all over your hand. But it increases the friction between the handle of the kettlebell and your palm.

Others use a light dusting of talcum powder during high-rep swings or other lifts. While this reduces friction (and reduces the risk of blisters), it also reduces your grip. Don’t use talc during ‘pulling’ moves unless you have a lightweight kettlebell.

Tape

Some folks have been known to use tape to protect the hands. At some kettlebell competitions, I’ve even seen guys wrap their palms in duct tape to stave off blister formation.

But this is a desperation move, at best. The sticky material from the tape will get all over your hands and the handle of your kettlebell, and it will actually increase the rate at which blisters occur.

So, use tape to keep pre-existing blisters from popping and tearing, but don’t use it to prevent blisters from happening in the first place.

The Pros and Cons of Using A Neti Pot for Nasal Irrigation

Many people suffer chronic sinus pain and allergies. There are many causes of such conditions, like stress, infection, pollution, dry nasal passage or sometimes it’s because the nasal passages are too small. Whatever the cause, one thing’s for sure – living with constant nasal problems is not easy. There’s medication that can be taken, but many doctors and alternative health practitioners advice regular nasal flushing with a neti pot. A neti pot is a small device, like a teapot, used to flush out the nasal passages. A solution of salt and water is mixed, and then the spout is placed against the nose, allowing the solution to gently flow into the passages and then flushed out. Debris, allergens and other blockages are cleared, and the passages become hydrated, allowing for air to freely pass through, and relieves pain and discomfort.

Now, the thought of pushing water through your nose may not sound appealing. Indeed, it may sound nasty to some people, but it has been proven to relieve sinus pain and many people use it on a daily basis. If you’re not sure if nasal flushing with a neti pot is right for you, read these pros and cons, to help you decide:

Pros:

Simulates the natural process of the body

A neti pot works in the same way as our bodies do. Our nasal passage has its own natural way of dealing with the foreign bodies that invade it. In the case of the respiratory system, tiny hairs called cilia and mucus line our nose and nasal passages. These act as traps, catching the dirt and dust and other particles to prevent them from entering the lungs. This dirt is then transferred to the back of the throat and is eventually destroyed by stomach acids. With the flushing action of the neti pot, the water solution helps to flush out the particles trapped in the cilia, when the mucus grows too thick or dry, then expels it from the passages.

Uses natural ingredients

There are no chemicals or unnatural ingredients used when flushing with a neti pot. Only filtered water and non-iodized salt touches your nasal passages. Medicines can serve their purpose, but daily intake of medicines can be bad for other parts of your body, like your liver. With water and salt, there are no side effects.

Soothe Irritation

Sometimes passages are inflamed, which is why they cause pain and irritation. A nasal flush can help soothe the inflamed passages, bringing relief from the pain.

Cons:

May wash away the good elements

When the mucus in the nasal passages become too thick or dry, then they become ineffective, which is why a nasal flush can help them rehydrated. However, the action of running water through the nasal passages may also wash away the good elements in the mucus, such as the antibacterial and antifungal components.

Not for people with nosebleed

Sinus flushing may aggravate nosebleed, so if the person experiences frequent nosebleed, then he or she should not attempt a nasal flush.

Using a neti pot can be helpful for people who suffer from allergies, sinus infections and other problems relating to the nasal passages. Many people swear by its efficacy, and it can be a good alternative to medication. Of course, it’s not for everyone, and anyone who would want to try it should consult their doctor before going on any long-term nasal flushing therapy.

Natural Cures For Ovarian Cysts – Discover 4 Alternative Natural Cures For Ovarian Cysts

If you or someone you know are suffering from ovarian cysts and are fed up with traditional methods of treatment, then read on. There are several Natural Cures for Ovarian Cysts, and I will go over some of them below.

If you have been given an ovarian cyst diagnosis, then you can try out these remedies to help shrink them without resorting to surgery. Natural Cures have long been used as alternative treatment to eliminate small and large cysts – as long as they don’t appear to be benign.

One of the Natural Cures for Ovarian Cysts is through dietary changes and nutrition. There are lots of foods that induce production of Estrogen, a hormone that feeds the lumps in your ovaries. These include, high carbohydrate and high iron foods.

In your diet, it is best to avoid tomatoes, iron-enriched red meat and dairy products. Consuming these will slow down the natural process that your body implements, in order to dissolve the cysts on its own.

Adding 2-3 cups of Herbal tea to your daily regimen, is another treatment option. Chamomile has a calming effect. Chasteberry and Cinammon Bark are two herbs that have been used to help these growths shrink in size.

Another alternative for natural cures is the Castor Oil Hot Packs. The National Institutes of Health and The National Library of Medicine has provided information on the effectiveness of Ricinoleic Acid. This is present in Castor Oil, and can be effective for melting down any abnormal formation inside the body.

Ingredients of a Castor Oil Treatment include:

Castor Oil
3-4 Hand Towels
2 Bath Towels (preferably dark in color)
Hot Water Bags

You should be in a relaxed position while doing this therapy. The castor oil must be heated on medium setting before starting the process. Immerse the two hand towels with castor oil. Put one on top of your abdomen and put the other one on your lower back (lower hip area). Wrap yourself with the bath towel and place the hot water bag on your tummy. Change when it gets cold.

Do this 2 times a week, for about 1-2 hours per session. (Tip: Baking soda can remove the oil on your body.) After a few days, you will be experience a vaginal discharge – which is a sign that the Ovarian Cysts are dissolving, due to this natural cures treatment.

Visualize yourself no longer dealing with the chronic, throbbing pain of menstrual cramps that visit you each month. Can you imagine what it would be like to have your hormones back in balance and regain consistent periods again?

Curing a Woman’s Vaginal Yeast Infection In 5 Easy Ways

A woman’s vaginal yeast infection also called Yeast Vaginitis or Vaginal Candidiasis is one of the most common discomforts many females face and suffer each day. Throughout the country there are many endless sleepless nights due to this infection. How many more nights of itching do you need to go through before you finally get it treated? Yeast infections are present in both sexes but especially women.

Please if you’ve suffered enough, then don’t suffer more, do the wise thing and find out how to cure your yeast infection. What most women don’t seem to understand is, if it’s not treated and cured it could lead to other more serious health problems. Did you know that yeast infections in some cases can cause infertility problems in women? Is that serious enough for you? That’s why it’s so important to cure a yeast infection in the early stages and treatments needn’t be expensive, here below are five easy remedies in curing your discomfort.

1. Ointments for yeast Infections.

Most common advice on how to cure your yeast infection would be to purchase an anti-yeast ointment or cream. These anti-yeast remedies are easily available over the counter at most pharmaceuticals. However, before doing so please consult your doctor first. If your doctor knows you well then I’m sure his advice on what ointment or cream to purchase would be the best advice you could gain. Apply the ointment/cream as instructed by your doctor, or as instructed by the manufacturer of the ointment/cream. In most cases the affected area is treated for 4-7 days. If you experience any swelling in this treatment time, you should stop using the ointment and consult your doctor.

2. Pills and lozenges for a Yeast Infections.

Another cure is anti-yeast pills and lozenges. You may have been informed that some relief methods not only rids you of the symptoms of infection, but also destroys the causes of Candida and promotes long term well being. You can get either a single pill dosage or a course of treatment from 3 to 7 days. The most common pill is Diflucan which is made to give you relief from your infection. Depending on the severity of your infection will depend on the pill or lozenge given.

3. A cleansing program for a Yeast Infection.

If you don’t fancy suppositories and tablets, then an effective cleansing program is a must in curing a yeast infection. High-fibre foods, herb Cascara, whole Flaxseeds and raw organic vegetables will help to ready your body for the yeast infection cleansing program. Because of its natural sugar content fruit should be avoided. Also avoid anything that contains yeast, like eating bread or drinking beer. Then look online for the best yeast infection cleansing program which suits you.

4. Natural remedies for a Yeast Infection.

There are a few natural remedies to help in the fight against Yeast Infection. One of the more popular natural remedies which are available over the counter is Tea Tree Oil. Please be careful, if used directly on sensitive skin some people get an uncomfortable stinging feeling. Please remember you don’t need a lot, just use a few drops of Tea Tree oil, a good lubrication substance and a clean tampon. To start with, coat the top half of the tampon in the lubricant of your choice (such as K-Y jelly). This will ensure that the tea tree oil isn’t fully absorbed by the tampon. The next step is to add a few drops of the tea tree oil onto the tampon. Once done then carefully insert the tampon into the vagina. If you find that the tea tree oil stings when you do it this way, you can always use an applicator tampon instead. In this case all you need to do is to expose the top half of the tampon and apply the lubricant and the tea tree oil like you did for the earlier method, then place the tampon back inside the applicator.

Other good alternative remedies are witch hazel and lemon balm which you can purchase easily. Garlic is also an excellent natural cure which is rich in anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Insert a clove of garlic into the vagina for just a few hours and you should see your symptoms clearing away in just a few days.

5. Vaginal suppositories for a Yeast Infection.

Another option would be the use of suppositories to cure the yeast infection. Suppositories are usually easily absorbed by the body and can be a natural remedy against the infection. A very effective natural yeast infection treatment is using a Boric Acid powder. If you feel comfortable with the do-it-yourself approach, you can purchase both the boric acid plus the empty capsules from most chemists, or if you go to a recognised online pharmacist. For the DIY approach you don’t need a capsule filling machine – you can tip the powder in by using some paper with a sharp crease in it or something similar to put the boric acid into the capsule. Some women find they can simply scoop the powder into the capsule. You’ll need the (double zero) 00 capsule size which can hold the amount recommended which is 600 mg to be used in the treatment of a yeast infection. The capsules are inserted into the vagina over a period of two weeks, one capsule a day. To do this you need to insert the capsule as high as you can into the vagina with either your finger or using the anti-thrush/anti-fungal applicator that comes with some treatments. It’s common that there will be a watery leakage, so bedtime is the best time and remember to use a panty liner. Some women can experience a burning and stinging sensation when using boric acid capsules as a vaginal suppository. Don’t use if the skin is badly infected or is broken. To help rub something like vitamin E oil or Vaseline over the outer area if the area is inflamed and irritated this will act as a protection when using the boric acid capsules. This helps remove the discomfort for some women.

If you ask your doctors nicely, I’m sure he or she will write a prescription for them to be created. It will cost more but it’s a lot easier if you don’t want to fiddle about with filling your own capsules or have the worries of somehow “something going wrong.”

Heroin – 5 Things You Need to Know

What is Heroin?

Heroin is a drug that is used to diminish pain in a medical context, however, it is used and abused for its recreational effects of sedation, muscle relaxation, pain relief, and euphoria. Heroin is a depressant, and like other depressants and opiates (OxyCotin, OxyCodone) can cause serious physical dependence. If you or someone you know is using heroin, please encourage them to seek medical treatment.

Is it Serious?

In a 2005 survey, 370,000 people reported using heroin within the last 12 months, and in the same year there were 164,572 emergency room visits caused by heroin use and is a serious problem in the United States. It is a physically destructive drug when used regularly and can be fatal when one over-doses. This commonly occurs when someone misjudges the amount or potency of a dose of heroin. Close to half of people using heroin in 2005 visited the emergency room for heroin-related health issues.

What Are Signs of Heroin Abuse?

Heroin users snort, smoke, or inject heroin intravenously (in their veins). Users who snort heroin will sniffle and touch their nose frequently. Users who smoke it can have dental problems and chapped lips. Users who inject (“shoot”) it will have scars and red bumps across major veins on their arms and feet (“track marks”). All users will show signs of itchy skin, flushing and rashes, pupil constriction, disorientation, confusion, sedation, and inebriation. While not taking heroin, heroin users can seem skittish and paranoid. Many heroin users addicted for prolonged periods of time may seem especially thin or gaunt, may smell unfavorably, and may suffer from a general lack of good hygiene and seem sick or ill. The clearest sign of use is finding used needles, bent spoons, and baggies of heroin powder or tar.

How Does Heroin Effect An Individuals Body?

Heroin has effects on the central, circulatory, and respiratory systems of the body. It can cause physical tolerance and dependence, wherein a user needs it to feel normal and needs to continually increase the dose of heroin to achieve the same effect. This causes psychological addiction. Taking heroin can also cause collapsed veins from the acid used to mix it when injecting it, usually citric acid like lemon juice. Users injecting it and sharing needles are at a very high risk of contracting blood-borne diseases like hepatitis and HIV. Heroin, especially heroin that is “cut” or mixed with other substances to increase volume, can cause infection of the heart lining and valves. It can cause pneumonia in the lungs and decrease liver functionality. And it causes abscesses around injection points where bacterial and fungal infection often occurs. Heroin use has no long-lasting positive physical effects and the negative long-lasting effects can cause chronic pain and death.

What are the Effects of Heroin Withdrawal?

Heroin withdrawal is the most painful and difficult of all recreational drugs, beginning six to twenty four hours after the last dose, and lasting between 3 and 7 days, with lingering physical and psychological effects lasting months. Common symptoms include sweating, cramps, cold sweats, nausea, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, severe muscle aches (most notably in the legs), vomiting, fever, and depression. Psychological withdrawal from heroin is much harder to quantify than the physical withdrawal symptoms, but the actual distancing of a user from the abuse substance is the hardest behavioral change someone going through withdrawal can encounter. If you or someone you know is addicted to heroin, it is strongly recommended you visit a rehab center to facilitate a less painful, safer, healthier withdrawal and recovery from heroin addiction.

Reflexology and Edema

What is edema (also spelled oedema), anyway?

Well, it’s an observable swelling that comes from a fluid accumulation in body tissues.

And, edema most commonly occurs in the feet and legs, where it’s referred to as peripheral edema.

The swelling is the result of the accumulation of excess fluid under the skin in the spaces within the tissues. We already have fluid there, the interstitial fluid, but this is more than usual.

Other parts of the body, such as the face and hands, can also be affected.

As many of us know after a long day of shopping (or walking around an art museum, or just standing on our feet) – swelling or edema around the ankles etc., can happen. And, it can happen to anyone.

At night, the fluid tends to drain from the legs so that foot/ankle edema is usually less obvious when you get up in the morning.

But, is it serious?

Well, depending on how extreme it is and how long it’s been there… it could be!

Types of Edema

Most of us will have experienced edema in our everyday life.

We’ll notice that our rings don’t fit or our ankles are a little puffy. And if you’ve had a little too much alcohol, you’ll see it in the morning – right before your eyes – in that puffy face of yours.

It comes and it goes but if it stays – well that could mean something different..,

There are 2 main types of edema:

  • In non-pitting edema, which usually affects the legs or arms, pressure that is applied to the skin does not result in a persistent indentation.

Pitting edema which can be demonstrated by applying pressure to the swollen area by depressing the skin with a finger, and a persistent indentation occurs. That means that the skin does not spring back but rather the indentation from your finger pressure remains, which indicates something more serious.

Edema has been described as the result of venous ulceration, which is often caused by an increase in tissue pressure (increased fluid within the tissue) because of increased capillary permeability.

Some Causes of Edema

Certainly, there can be many causes for edema. Some are fleeting as I mentioned above, while others are much more serious.

If you have edema (or any swelling) and don’t know the cause, it’s important that you see your doctor. You’ll feel better to know that nothing is wrong… or, if there is, you’ll want to know that too.

Edema of the ankles and lower legs can be mild and passing or, it can accompany other conditions, including obesity, diseased leg veins, kidney disease, cirrhosis of the liver, anemia, and severe malnutrition. It might also be a characteristic of congestive heart failure.

And, there could be other factors that might contribute to its onset, including:

  • Eating a poor diet that’s high in salt and carbohydrates
  • Taking birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills
  • Pregnancy and PMS
  • Sodium retention
  • Varicose veins and history of phlebitis
  • Allergic reactions
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Trauma
  • Abusing drugs

Symptoms:

One symptom is when, initially, the feet and legs will appear swollen as the day progresses, but after a period of time, the swelling will set in first thing in the morning and continue to worsen throughout the day.

There’s probably a certain amount of edema that we can live with when it’s found to not be a problem.

But, it can become serious – particularly if the edema is advanced and has been around for a while – it might cause pitting (as mentioned above, when you press on the swollen area for a few seconds, you will notice an indentation in that area that continues long after the finger-pressure is removed). Continued swelling can cause skin ulcerations.

Over time, other symptoms could develop as a result of the fluid retention and the pressure on the tissue and the body:

  • High blood pressure
  • Headaches
  • pressure on the skin
  • Increased urination
  • Palpitations
  • Swollen hands and/or wrists
  • puffiness of the face around the eyes , in the feet, ankles, and legs
  • weight gain

Salt Intake and Edema

Okay, we know that food tastes better with salt and that’s why so many products and restaurants load their food up with it.

It’s usually in vast quantities in processed foods. Even ‘health foods’ can have lots and lots of salt (it’s a pity that salt, sugar and fat are things that make food taste better and are overused in our culture).

Almost anything can be okay in moderation – but we’re way over the top with these foods.

The body’s balance of salt is usually well-regulated. A normal person can consume relatively small or large quantities of salt in the diet (although extremes are best avoided) without concern for developing salt depletion or retention.

The amount of salt excreted by the kidneys is regulated by hormonal and physical factors that signal whether retention or removal of salt by the kidneys is necessary.

If someone has a kidney disease that impairs the function of the kidneys – the ability to excrete salt in the urine is limited.

In some conditions, the amount of salt in the body increases, and this may cause a person to retain water and develop edema.

Common Treatments

Over the counter diuretics containing ammonium chloride and caffeine (think Aqua-Ban®) are sold with the promise to relieve symptoms related to edema. More severe edematous conditions require medical attention.

Treatment of edema with prescription medications is limited to the use of diuretics, commonly referred to as “water pills.”

Commonly, treatment consists of managing the underlying condition, which may include: inadequate nutrition; liver, heart, and kidney disease; or obstruction of blood or lymph flow. In some cases, a salt-restricted diet may be recommended.

If the edema is localized and due to a strain or trauma, people report have gotten good results from homeopathic products like ‘Traumeel’ & ‘Topricene’. I keep both of them at hand.

What Might Help?

  • Diet is always key – watch your salt intake and eat lots of vegetables
  • It’s always a good idea to watch your salt intake.
  • If your legs or ankles are puffy, it’s suggested that you elevate your legs above your heart while lying down.
  • Exercise your legs. This could help pump fluid from your legs back to your heart.
  • Some people find that wearing support stockings (sold at most drug and medical supply stores) help.
  • Reflexology could be a great healthy support – OR NOT – read on…

What Can Reflexology Do?

The fluid that builds up to become edema is normally brought back to the heart via the lymphatic system.

Unlike the circulatory system which has a pump (the heart), the lymphatic system relies on movements of the body to help drain it’s fluids.

Since there are no little pumps at the ends of our fingers and toes, the gentle movements of our reflexology techniques (thumb and finger-walking) at the extremities, supports the natural processes of the whole body.

Once again, I’ll remind you that reflexologists don’t treat, diagnose or prescribe.

And, I’m not even interested specifically in the movement of local fluids. My focus is on the whole body, the organs and organ systems.

But another “fringe benefit” of my reflexology work is the potential to help the fluid tides as well.

However beware, there might be some edemic conditions that don’t need this or are too weak to benefit.

Yes – that’s right, if the condition is not diagnosed – or even if it is diagnosed – and it’s advanced edema (pitted edema is advanced) – you must always check first with the doctor before working.

Why?

Because, unless you are a doctor, you don’t know if it will help or will be too much fluid movement for an obviously compromised system to handle.

No guessing here – remember, someone who is sick will have a medical team. It’s in everyone’s best interest to check with the medical team. They won’t mind or be shocked – it’s what they all do.

Now my guess is almost always that reflexology will help.

But, if someone is very ill, it’s the MD on the team that must know and approve any work before you can be sure about proceeding. They know the whole story about their patient’s health and they’ll base their recommendations on the big picture.

You and even the person with the edema may not understand or even know all the implications of their condition.

So it’s easier than you thought – and there’s no guess work – just make the call to inform the team and get the okay for proceeding with reflexology.

Easy as pie (is that a prairie expression?).

A little puffiness is a pretty common sight. In a healthy individual it doesn’t represent a problem unless it’s gone on for too long, has impeded movement or is of concern.

And, yes – there are reflexes to the immune system.

Don’t forget the spleen (the largest lymphoid in the body and thymus reflexes too – both are important).
