Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia is predominantly seen in young women, although it can affect anyone of any age and both genders. It is thought to be caused by emotional, psychological and social factors rather than physical motivations. There are studies that suggest that anorexia has some hereditary basis and statistically the condition appears more often in girls who were born prematurely or in those who had sustained trauma during a difficult birth (Source: Carlson, 2008).

Anorexia is very serious with less than 50% of the patients ever making a full recovery. Five to ten percent of the girls treated for anorexia will die from complications of their disease or from suicide. Most anorexics develop osteoporosis and are at great risk for serious bone fractures that may never heal properly because of the lack of nutrition to do so. They also tend to stop menstruating and may have hair loss, weak, brittle nails and dry skin. More seriously, they tend to have enlarged hearts and shrunken brain tissue. They will often become obsessed with exercise, pushing themselves to continue exercising despite the fact that they are not eating at all. Bulimia

Bulimics will alternately eat huge amounts of foods (binge) and then throw it up (purge) in a cycle that they will soon lose control of. Bulimics get caught up in this cycle and will find new ways to make themselves vomit long after they have lost the gag reflex and will also abuse laxatives, possibly leading to the loss of sphincter control as well. Addressing Nutritional Needs

The average teenage girl needs around 2200 calories per day with the average teenage boy needing slightly more than this. The right amount of fats, proteins and carbohydrates should be included in this number and should be discussed with the teen so that they feel like they have control over their own health and nutrition. 2) Best Food Sources of Folic Acid are: RAW Green leafy vegetables, including spinach, kale, beet greens, beet root, chard, asparagus, and broccoli. Starchy vegetables containing folic acid are corn, lima beans, green peas, sweet peas, sweet potatoes, artichokes, okra, and parsnips. Oats are high in folic acid as well as whole wheat brown bread. FOODS THAT MAY CAUSE INFECTIONS

Toxoplasmosis – usually symptomless (apart from mild flu symptoms), this can cause serious problems for the baby. Caused by direct contact with the organism Toxoplasma Gondi, it is found in cat faeces, raw meat, and unpasteurized goats’ milk. Soil on fruit and vegetables may be contaminated.

Salmonella – Contamination with Salmonella bacterium can cause bacterial food poisoning. This doesn’t usually harm the baby directly, but any illness involving a high temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration could cause a miscarriage or preterm labour.

HERBS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY.

Herbal remedies are for the most part quite safe to be taken during pregnancy; some are useful alternatives to drugs both in chronic illness and acute minor problems such as may arise during pregnancy. Equipment you will need

  • The sauna – Public saunas are not bad, but if you are able, it is far better to install one in your own home. Home saunas are affordable and one need not worry about picking up some bug from someone else’s sweat. An in-home sauna is also so much more convenient that you will undoubtedly use it more often. Consider the cost as an investment in your good health.
  • A very small bikini (if it is a public sauna). Your birthday suit works best, though, and is another good reason for installing your own sauna in your own home.
  • A body brush. These can be obtained from most health stores.
  • Shower shoes (for public sauna use) and access to a shower. Shower shoes are not needed if you have your own sauna at home. The shower afterwards is a very important part of the sauna experience. It cools you down quickly (keep in mind the principle of hydrotherapy) and rinses off the toxic-laden sweat your body has just produced.

How the sauna causes the body to detoxify  

The blood stream is composed of about half water and half cells. When you sweat, some of the water is removed and the blood gets thicker. The body then tries to maintain the balance in the blood by drawing water from the cells. As it does this, toxins are also pulled from the cells and the detoxification process begins. Once the toxins are in the blood stream, they will be delivered to the excretion organs-the liver and kidneys. About an hour after the sauna, the balance (homeostasis) is regained, whether you drink water or not. However, if you drink water during the sauna, it goes into the blood stream very quickly, which means that intra-cellular water is not needed and therefore the detoxification process is undermined.  

Things to Do When Using the Sauna

  • Remove all jewelry, as metal heats up quickly and can burn you
  • Do all of your exercising before you use the sauna, not after
  • Use a body brush to dry-brush your entire body before the sauna. This will promote faster sweating and stimulate your lymphatic system.
  • Make use of the restroom facilities prior to using the sauna
  • Spend 6 -15 minutes in the sauna. It is best to lie down, if possible. In any case, do not sit with your feet hanging down.
  • Use the second bench (or third, if there is one)
  • Relax, close your eyes. If some areas of your skin (such as elbows or shins) get too hot because they do not perspire, use your hands to move some perspiration from other areas.
  • After the time is up, take a cold shower (getting wet from the feet up) and spend an equal amount of time drying off, cooling down and relaxing. You may want to wear a robe so you don’t get chilled.
  • Repeat the above process at least 2 times–3 times if you can spare the time
  • Taking the sauna in your birthday suit (naked) is best, but for the public sauna, wear the smallest bikini or bathing trunks (made of light unlined cotton) that you can find. Or, you could wrap yourself loosely in a bath towel. A full bathing suit will trap the heat next to your body, which will hinder evaporation and your body will heat up too much under the clothing
  • Drink water to replenish the fluids after the sauna.
  • Eat lightly afterwards
  • If you can work in a full body massage afterwards, so much the better. You’ll want to drink plenty of water after the body massage.

Things Not to Do When Using the Sauna

  • Drink water during the sauna as it undermines the detoxification process
  • Go into the sauna with a wet body or wet swimsuit (you will not start to sweat until the moisture has evaporated).
  • Talk, read or exercise during the sauna
  • Dangle your legs over the edge of the bench. It is best to lie down, if possible. Dangling the legs over the edge causes blood to flow to the legs and collect there
  • Skip the cold water shower afterwards. This is import for several reasons.
  • Use a hot tub between or after a sauna session
  • Exercise after the sauna

 Do not use the sauna if you have:

  • Advanced arteriosclerotic conditions
  • Acute inflammatory arthritis
  • Acute infectious diseases, including tuberculosis
  • Cancer and other malignant degenerative problems
  • Uncontrolled circulatory or heart conditions
  • Extremely low blood pressure
  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders
  • Serious liver or kidney problems
  • Advanced thyroid dysfunction (hyper or hypo)
  • Angina pectoris
  • Recent heart attack
  • Extreme acne vulgaris, eczema and open boils (in public sauna)

What Type of Sauna is Best?  

Many saunas utilize an electric heater. Sometimes rocks are piled up around the heater element to help retain heat. The rocks also can be doused occasionally with water to temporarily increase the humidity. The temperature inside is usually kept around 180 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of sauna usually takes an hour or two before it is ready for use and is probably the most expensive to use in terms of the use of electricity.  

The whole point of the sauna is to make your body sweat, which in turn helps it to get rid of toxins that have been building up inside. Sweat therapy is an excellent means of overall purification. The skin is the largest eliminative organ in the body and the elimination through sweating is more passive and requires less expenditure of energy than elimination via the kidneys and bowels. To aid and enhance the process of elimination of toxins, you can add herbal teas such as yarrow, elder or peppermint. Do not drink them during the sauna process, however.  

The heat from the infra-red sauna allows your body to produce a great deal more perspiration through your pores and it requires less time to be ready for use. Far-infrared therapy is FDA approved for pain relief, decreasing joint stiffness, detoxification and increasing blood circulation. It is both safe and natural. As one who has relied on this therapy, I can vouch for its effectiveness on pain. After using the FIR unit, pain I experienced from a case of frozen shoulder decreased by about 80% or more, and when used regularly, the pain reduction was almost 100%. I personally would not be without a FIR unit.

Nutrient Pollution – Consequences In Water – Causes And Effects

Nutrient pollution refers to a form of pollution in which nutrients, usually nitrogen and phosphorus, are present in a high concentration that is damaging to ecosystems. Nutrient pollution is primarily a problem in aquatic ecosystems, such as streams, rivers, bays, and lakes. It is particularly an issue of concern in lakes and relatively closed or contained bays, like the Chesapeake bay. Nutrient pollution is caused primarily by the over-use of fertilizers in agriculture, or by waste from animal farming operations. The negative effects of this pollution are to disrupt, damage, or destroy aquatic ecosystems, which often can have negative environmental impacts, by destroying fishing industries.

This article gives a brief overview of nutrient pollution, including its causes in agriculture and its effects on waterways and fishing industries. The article concludes with some concrete recommendations of what can be done to prevent this type of pollution, both for farmers, and for concerned citizens.

How does nutrient pollution work?

Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for all living ecosystems. Phosphorus is present in soils, and typically originates from the underlying rock or geologic substrates. Nitrogen is present in the atmosphere, but only enters the ecosystem through a complex process of nitrogen fixation, which is carried out primarily by certain plants and bacteria. The growth of plants are limited by the availability of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients, so in agriculture, the yield of crops can often be improved by applying fertilizers containing these nutrients.

Plants, however, will only utilize a certain amount of nutrients; once they have as much as they need, they are then limited by other factors, like the availability of sun or water, and the remainder of the nutrients will remain in the soil, where it leeches out when it rains, and runs off into the water table or nearby streams.

Although nutrients are beneficial to some plants, an overabundance of nutrients can cause problems in aquatic ecosystems, primarily because it can cause algal blooms. Algae, which are fast-growing microorganisms or simple plants, respond to the influx of nutrients by growing rapidly. The new growth can choke out existing plants, cloud the water, and clog waterways. When the algae begin to die, the process uses up dissolved oxygen, and if the algal bloom was big enough, it can create a dead zone. This process is called eutrophication. Eutrophication is primarily an issue in lakes and closed bodies of water, but it also happens in rivers and bays as well. Even in areas where eutrophication does not happen, nutrients can still harm and disrupt ecosystems by altering the balance of the various species.

Impact on the fishing industry:

The issue of pollution caused by runoff of nutrients from agriculture is not just an issue of protecting the environment. This form of pollution has immediate and tangible economic impacts. When an aquatic ecosystem is disrupted, the populations of all animals, including fish, crabs, oysters, and other shellfish, are disrupted. In many cases, such as in the Chesapeake bay, whole fishing industries have been destroyed. Whole towns, reliant on fishing for their livelihood, have been driven to economic ruin as a result of the waning populations of fish, caused in part by nutrient pollution, combined with other types of agricultural and industrial pollution.

Causes of nutrient pollution:

The overwhelming majority of cases of nutrient pollution are caused by runoff from agriculture. The main two culprits are the over-use of fertilizer by farming operations growing crops, and the runoff of waste from animal farming operations, such as pig farms or chicken farms.

Nutrient runoff is a wasted resource:

Because nutrients are valuable inputs into the agricultural process, nutrient pollution involves unnecessary waste, waste of inputs, or a wasted resource which is being discarded. In sustainable farming practices, the farmer will apply only the amount of fertilizer that is needed, and the nutrients will be taken up completely by the crops being grown. In sustainable production of animals, the animal waste will be gathered and used as fertilizer for other crops. For example, traditional farming methods use manure from cows and large animals, as well as chicken and pig waste, to fertilize other crops.

A point for hope:

This last realization is a point for hope. Nutrient pollution is not necessary; it represents an inefficiency. It is a problem that can be solved. But there are other ways in which people can prevent or minimize the effects of this form of pollution. One simple but powerful solution is the creation of buffer zones, wild green spaces, along waterways. By filling the areas along streams and rivers with lush growth of plants, the plants will extract nutrients from the water before it runs into the river, and use it for their own growth. The preservation and restoration of wetlands also has a similar effect, filtering nutrients out of the water, as plants use them for their own growth. By raising awareness of these issues, we can ultimately solve the problem of nutrient pollution.

3 Major Types of Cancer Explained

Cancer is a disease that can affect any of the body’s cells. It starts to develop when the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in your body’s cells becomes disrupted or damaged. DNA contains specific instructions that tell your cells when to divide and multiply which allows them to grow in a controlled manner. If the DNA becomes disrupted then these instructions become distorted your cells start to grow in a rapid and uncontrollable way. This uncontrolled growth causes a lump to form which is referred to as a tumor. This tumor can ultimately become cancerous and start to affect other areas of the body. In this article I will be discussing three of the major types of cancer in greater detail.

1) CARCINOMAS:- Carcinomas are the most prominent type of cancer accounting for around 85% of all diagnoses. They develop in the epithelial cells that line the body and its organs. Carcinomas can be further grouped into four sub-types; squamous cell carcinomas (which affect the lining of the mouth and the airways), adenocarcinomas (which affect the lining of the glands), transitional cell carcinoma (which affects the lining of the bladder) and basal cell carcinomas (which affect the skin).

2) LEUKAEMIAS & LYMPHOMAS:- These types of cancer represent around 7% of cancer cases. They are grouped together because they both develop in the cells of the immune system. Leukaemias develop in the cells of the myeloid system which protects your body from bacteria and parasites. Lymphomas develop in the lymphatic system which help your body fight infection.

3) SARCOMAS:- Sarcomas are one of the rarest types of cancer accounting for less than 1% of all diagnoses. They develop in the connective tissues of the body and can be further divided into three main sub-types; bone carcinomas (which affect the bones), gastro-intestinal stromal tumours (which affect the stomach and the intestine) and soft tissue sarcomas (which affect soft connective tissues such as muscle and fat).

Cancer is a horrible disease which very often turns out to be fatal. Unfortunately, many people know very little about this condition and how it develops.
