Itching Treatment with Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies

Itching is a symptom of several conditions of the skin such as eczema, scabies, ringworm, allergies, etc. When the skin is inflamed, the nerves in it become hyperactive. This increases the irritation at the region, which we try to remove by itching. Several times itching is mild and the sensation goes away after a while. But if the itching is due to a skin disease, then it could become very severe, leading to bleeding, pus formation and further complications.

Most itching is caused in the body due to problems that are associated with the vata dosha, i.e. the dosha that governs the air element of the human body. This dosha is aggravated not just by the body itself, but also due to external factors such as climate. This is the reason why itching is more severe in the winter season than in the summer. At the same time, itching could be due to internal impurities in the blood, or due to the accumulation of bacteria on the skin. Thus, there are many internal as well as external factors that contribute to itching.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Itching

1. Babul (Acacia arabica)

The bark of the babul is effective in controlling skin problems. It is most beneficial in the treatment of itching caused due to eczema.

2. Butea (Butea monosperma)

The seeds of the butea have excellent effects in controlling itching caused due to a variety of skin diseases such as ringworm, scabies and eczema. It can also cure boils, pimples and swellings that itch. For better results, these seeds are ground and mixed with lemon juice and used as an external application on the affected part.

3. Cassia (Cassia fistula)

Cassia leaves are used for treating all kinds of irritations of the skin. In case of severe itches from ringworm, its juice or paste is applied as a dressing on the affected part.

4. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

Holy basil leaves are very effective in the treatment of itching due to ringworm. Its properties have also been found in other kinds of itching.

5. Linseed (Linum usitassimum)

Linseed is a good household remedy for itching. A hot poultice of its seeds is applied on the affected part.

6. Madhuca (Madhuca indica)

Madhuca is an indigenous Indian herb that has been traditionally used for the cure of itching. It is used in various forms for the treatment. A paste of its bark can be applied to the affected region. Alternatively, the oil of its leaves can also be applied. If the itching is due to eczema, then the leaves are smeared with sesame oil and are used as a bandage on the affected region. The bandage needs to be changed after every three to four hours.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Itching

There are no specific dietary indications for controlling itching. However, oily foods must be avoided. Spicy foods and salt are also not good for itchy skin.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Itching

First and foremost, the cause of the itching must be ascertained. Without knowing this, no treatment would be efficient. Based on the cause, the following Ayurvedic medicines can be prescribed:-

1. Seasonal rashes and prickly heats are due to pitta constitution of the body. This can be treated using Pravala pishti in small doses.

2. If the itching is due to eczema, then Ayurvedic doctors will prescribe Paradadi balm to be applied locally on the skin. For severe eczema, there is Rasa manikya that can be used. Shuddha gandhaka is an internal medicine complementary with the external agents.

3. For ringworm treatment, Paradadi balm is applied locally. Instead Dadrughna lepa can also be used. Shuddha gandhaka is used for internal administration.

(4) Home Remedies for Itching

a. Boil about 25 grams of babul and mango barks each in one liter of water. Allow a fomentation of these vapors directly onto the affected part of the skin. When the fomentation is done, dab the region with ghee. The itchiness will slowly disappear.

b. Mix linseed oil in equal parts of lemon juice. Apply this on the region where itching is severe. This remedy works for treating almost all types of itching.

c. Mix the juice of a fresh coconut and a tomato. Massage this on the itchy region. The itchiness will fade away.

d. If the itchiness is spreading all over the body, then you may try out the following recipe. Mix some ground red gram (arhar ki daal) in curds. Apply this on the skin for three to four days. The itching will stop spreading and will slowly disappear within a few days.

e. Grind sandalwood and black pepper to a fine paste. Mix them in ghee. Apply them with a rough cloth onto the itchy skin. Then expose the skin to sunlight. This is a quick method for reducing the itching sensation, but it may be a temporary relief.

f. Simply applying the juices of the root of bitter gourd (karela) on the skin also relieves itching to a great extent.

g. Itching that is caused due to dryness of the skin can be reduced by applying the cream of milk onto the whole skin and massaging it. This acts like a natural moisturizer for the skin.

Effective Treatments For Cystic Acne

What is Cystic Acne?

Cystic Acne (precisely Nodulocystic Acne) is an acute or severe form of acne, which derives its name from the cysts that accompany this acne condition. These cysts are actually nodules of inflammation that result from abnormal dilation of a normal skin structure.

The cysts normally develop from a papular or nodular acne lesion when it percolates deeper into the skin generating local immune response. Cysts may appear only on, or mostly develop on, the face. However, they may soon occur in other areas like the neck, shoulders, back, chest, arms and even affect the scalp. When the cysts get inflamed, they can be painful and appear to be filled with thick, yellow pus-like fluid.

Cystic Acne is a disfiguring form of severe acne as it causes cell destruction and leads to permanent skin scarring. Sometimes a cyst even measures several centimeters in diameter leading to deep keloidal scars. Cystic Acne is dreaded most for this disfiguring aspect of scarring, which may continue for ten or more years and can lead to severe consequences. In the appearance-conscious society of the present times, Cystic Acne can ruin one’s personal and professional prospects, draining and devastating the person psychologically.

Nodular cysts occurring close together may unite, causing substantial cell destruction and inflammation and leading to another form of Severe Acne, Acne Conglobata.

Approved Treatments For Cystic Acne

Approved treatments for Cystic Acne include:

  1. Oral medication (chiefly antibiotics and contraceptives)
  2. Isotretinoin
  3. Intralesional Corticosteroid Injections and
  4. Surgical Excision

Topical antibiotics and warm water compresses are prescribed for the initial stages or mild cases of Cystic Acne.

Oral Medication

Oral antibiotics have been the mainstay of acne treatment for many years. The treatment begins with high dosage of antibiotics, which is lowered with improvement in the acne condition. Antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Erythromycin, Minocycline and Tetracycline are known to be effective against Cystic Acne. The one backlash of antibiotic treatment is that the acne bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotic being used to treat it. In that case, it has to be followed with another antibiotic.

Oral contraceptives, likewise, are effective in curing acne in women. Birth-control pills act by suppressing overactive sebaceous glands.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin, a retinoid related to vitamin A, is an effective oral treatment for patients suffering from severe Cystic Acne. Isotretinoin acts by reducing sebum production, thereby unclogging skin pores and preventing the formation of new comedones. The opening up of the hair follicles simultaneously suppresses the growth of anaerobic bacteria that cause inflammation. Isotretinoin produces the best results when it is used from the early stages (it is not effective on pre-existing scars). Isotretinoin medication is usually continued for fifteen to twenty weeks.

Intralesional Corticosteroid (CS) Injections

Intralesional Corticosteroids have been successfully used to treat a variety of dermatological and non-dermatological conditions including Cystic Acne. Intralesional Therapy or Intralesional Injection implies the direct injection of the drug into the skin lesion. This leads to higher concentration of the drug at the site of the disease so that it acts faster and produces better results.

Intralesional Corticosteroid injections are used when an acne cyst becomes severely inflamed. Injections diluted with Corticosteroid not only lessen pain and inflammation, they also help in avoiding scarring of the skin by preventing the cyst from rupturing. Following Intralesional Therapy with any of the steroids, namely Triamcinolone Acetonide (TA) or triamcinolone hexacetonide, hydrocortisone acetate, methylprednisolone, the cyst melts (in 3 to 5 days) and the process of regeneration and healing starts.

All the above-mentioned treatments have both advantages and disadvantages; hence, consultation with your dermatologist (detailing your health condition) is a must.

Surgical Excision

Acne surgery, or surgical excision and removal of acne, is performed when the cysts do not respond to medication. Treatment involves manual extraction of blackheads and whiteheads with the help of a pointed instrument like a round loop extractor that dislodges the blackhead or whitehead in the cyst. This form of surgery should only be performed in perfectly sterile conditions by trained dermatologists. Extraction undertaken by unqualified people may lead to rupturing of the skin tissue, which can then invite infection from skin-based bacteria, leading to greater inflammation.

Cystic Acne, like all acne conditions is curable; it only needs immediate attention and proper treatment.

Pau D’Arco A Natural Antibiotic & Powerful Anti-Fungal

We can be grateful to American Indians for a multitude of herbal and natural medicines. Pau d’arco has a been used as a medicine by the indigenous people of the rainforest. The Pau d’arco tree is a broad-leaf evergreen that grows to a height of 125 feet and produces violet colored flowers which accounts for it’s often being called the “trumpet tree”. It grows well in Peru and Argentina high in the Andes. It can be found growing in the low-lying areas of Paraguay and Brazil. It’s use goes back in history to before the Incas. Pau d’arco tree was used to make hunting bows and as a medicine. It was observed by indigenous people that when the tree was alive and even after it was cut down, it never developed growth of mold, mildew, or fungi.

The Guarani and Topi Indians refer to the tree as “tajy, which means “to have strength and vigor” i.e. good health. Tribal medicine people peeled off the tree’s bark in long strips. They then separated the inner and outer layers and used the inner bark to make healing teas. Pau d’ arco has crystalline oxygen infused in it’s inner bark, which is rich in iron, calcium, selenium, vitamins A, B-complex and C., magnesium potassium and sodium. These pau d’arco nutrients make give it antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal action which stimulates the immune system and fights disease. Indigenous people of South America have used pau d’arco for treating malaria, anemia, colitis, respiratory problems, colds, cough, flu, fungal infections, fever, arthritis and rheumatism, poor circulation, skin irruptions and sexually transmitted disease.

Lapachol, which is a photochemical, is present in the inner bark of pau d’arco trees has been documented as an effective natural medicine for use in treating abscesses and tumors. However, for it to be used to treat conditions such as cancer, the amount of lapachol, found in pau d’ arco, required to provide and effective dosage, would be toxic if used as the exclusive treatment. It can however, be used along with other cancer treatments. Pau d’arco is given free by the Argentina government to cancer patients and also leukemia patients because of it’s blood purifying qualities and because it has been know to reduce pain caused by cancer and it’s treatment because of pau ‘d arco’s anti-inflammatory effect.

Pau d’arco contains selenium which is one of our body’s natural defenses against yeast infections, vaginally as well as for topical skin treatment. It’s antifungal action aids in the elimination of candida. Because of it’s antifungal properties, it is useful for fighting fungi that promotes athlete’s foot and other skin infections caused by fungi. It has also been shown to be effective in treating other infections such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, strep, and dysentery. Pau d’arco has a cleansing ability so is very useful for relieving intestinal infections, destroying parasites, and restoring colon health. A number of infection fighting substances known as napthoquinones seem to destroy certain disease causing bacteria, without destroying beneficial bacteria. This makes it an excellent natural antibiotic.

As a preventative, pau d’arco has been shown to help build our immune system with the stimulation of macrophages that fight disease. Pau d’arco has a high iron content that contributes to the elimination of wastes, the assimilation of nutrients and increasing oxygen supply to needed areas of the body. It helps improve hemoglobin and red blood cell corpuscles.. It therefore can be used for relief from chronic fatigue. Pau d’arco blood cleaning qualities makes it an excellent anti-allergy, anti-rhumatic, astringent, and cardiotonic. It is also often used to balance high blood pressure. It helps tone, balance and strengthen the heart. Pau d’arco helps to neutralize the poisons involving the liver which aids the liver in it’s blood cleansing function.. By improving the health of our blood and it’s flow we greatly increase the effectiveness of our immune system.

Pau d’arco is very useful in treatment and relief of colds, flu, herpes and hepatitis because of it’s antiviral qualities. It therefore is an excellent alternative or synthetic prescription or over-the -counter cold and flu “treatments” that often only suppress symptoms without actually curing the cause or may carry the risk of unwanted, sometimes harmful, side effects e.g drowsiness, etc.

With our concern about the undesired side effects of prescription antibiotics i.e. destroying beneficial bacteria or becoming ineffective because of bacterial mutation, we can find in pau d’arco ,a powerfully effective natural antibiotic alternative. As is true of many natural health care remedies, pau d’arco has many general health care benefits beyond the specific intended purpose. For example, if we use pau d’arco for relieving a cold, we will also benefit from it’s cleansing action of our blood and liver, fighting of yeast infection, elimination of intestinal parasites, etc. We an also benefit from it’s general immune building properties while treating a specific health condition. Once again, we benefit from the experience and wisdom of indigenous people, as they discovered and developed the use of pau d’arco another of Nature’s powerful gifts, a natural antibiotic.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is also known as COPD or emphysema and is a disease causing permanent damage to the lungs, so that the contractile capacity of the lungs gets severely compromised, with affected individuals experiencing a progressively worsening difficulty in breathing. The symptoms of COPD include wheezing, breathlessness, large amounts of expectoration, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. This condition can cause considerable disability and is a leading cause of death. Cigarette smoking, prolonged irritation of the lungs due to air pollution, dust or environmental waste products, form the major causes for this condition. The modern management of this condition involves the use of medication to reduce breathlessness and lung secretions, control and treatment of infection, avoidance of lung irritants, cessation of smoking, and practicing breathing exercises like Pranayam and Yogasanas.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for COPD involves the use of herbal medicines so as to treat and reduce or reverse the damage to the lungs, reduce symptoms, prevent recurrent infections, improve immunity of the mucosa of the respiratory tract, and improve the breathing capacity of the lungs. It is important to commence treatment at the earliest possible so that permanent lung damage can be avoided, and structural damage can be treated and possibly reversed. Early treatment can bring about a complete cure in affected individuals, thereby avoiding the serious morbidity and mortality which is usually associated with this condition.

Herbal medicines which have a specific action on the respiratory tract and the mucosa lining the lungs up to the terminal alveoli, have an important role to play in the management of COPD These medicines treat and cure chronic infection and inflammation, reduce the stagnation and excessive production of secretions, help the respiratory mucosa to recover and bring about a regeneration of the ciliary hair lining the mucosa. This helps to bring lung function to near-normal or optimum levels.

Herbal medicines also help the overall lung tissue to become healthy and resistant to pollution, infection and chronic irritation. Medicines can also be used to repair and heal the damage to the capillaries within the lungs which are situated adjoining the lung alveoli and which help conduct an exchange of gases from the lungs to the blood circulation. This treatment helps in proper exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the lungs.

Once the treatment aspect of COPD is carried out to the maximum extent possible, additional Ayurvedic treatment can be given in order to prevent recurrence of symptoms or further damage to the lungs. This treatment is known as Rasayan therapy and involves the use of different medicines in progressively increasing doses so as to provide maximum therapeutic benefit by not only improving the functioning of the lungs, but also providing improved resistance both for the lungs as well as for the whole body.

Depending upon the severity of the condition, individuals affected with COPD require treatment for six to nine months in order to benefit significantly from treatment. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant role to play in the management and treatment of COPD.

Invisible Child

Andrea Elliott is a writer that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007. She seeks for the best stories even if they are the most complicated. According to the New York Times article about the author, she became passionate about disclosing poverty and social problems. On 2013 as an extensive report for the New York Times, after her article “Invisible Child” was published, she won the George Polk award among other honors. With this article she prompted city officials’ to remove 400 children from substandard shelters.

As part of her background she faces the problem as there was no middle class in the city of New York, where financial pressure such as unemployment, health care, housing costs, and low wages are becoming more common. Andrea Elliott puts in the spotlight this social problem as a person; she has a name, a family, and a dream, but not a place that she can call home. This “invisible Child,” Dasani, comes out to the world to show people how little grateful they are, I include myself. This 11-year-old girl, seen by the eyes of Elliott, shows that Dasani is strong enough to wake up under the same roof of 22,000 other homeless, the same roof where drugs are toss around like air, where the oxygen is almost not enough, where the piles of unwashed clothes are bigger than her bed, and sexual predator are always puckish. Dasani still goes on, despite the daily struggle, her vast amount of responsibilities, her parental dysfunction, and her fear of being rejected by society. In my analysis I would show how the author makes her readers question about how fortunate they are; she sets forth this article via pathos, to indicate that this “invisible child” is still able to get up every day with zest and yet say “That is a lot on my plate.”

Andrea Elliott shows her version of what New York is without the luxury, kudos, and wealth. That New York related with, commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, technology, education, and entertainment; opens its doors every year to approximately 55 million annual visitors. Sadly, according to the Coalition for Homeless Organization, 58,987 people will sleep tonight in New York City shelter, yes the same New York. Year by year this number gets higher and the solution gets more remote. That is why Andrea Elliott through pathos, plays an important role on the issue. Each word and each picture set on this article brought home the incompetence of society to take a closer look to the problem. This impressive and powerful article that Andrea Elliott shared provides a window into inequality. Every single time that Elliott talks about the homelessness, is easy to sense how this issue, dispensing the tragedy and the rough conditions is handle with bravery.

Elliott implies on every line that the simple things can be more meaningful for people with fewer facilities in life. The author displays empathy with her readers on each detail. For example, a character on the story of the girls mother Joanie, got a her life turned around after the New York Times helped her to find a job she said that the best day of her life was her first day of job, they live by a dream ruling them, a reason to live. Normally a regular person that has everything will never catalogue his first day of job as the best of his life, most of the time they feel forced or miserable about it. Elliott touched me in a way that probably any article before. Elliott’s rhetorical analysis of pathos is her forte; her words to describe the situation are labels to describe a situation for example: garments, veneer of affluence, and yearnings are more emotional for readers than clothing.

The use of analogies, metaphors, and other figures of speech not only make Elliott’s article more interesting and compelling. Dasani’s own spirited intelligence and devotion for life is what Andrea Elliott gives to her readers into pathos. She sleeps with her seven siblings, and her parents on six decaying mattresses. Not even close enough to the queen mattress where most of the New Yorker spends their nights. They share a communal bathroom, with toilets frequently clogged with vomit and feces. And yes! Sometimes people just complain about their siblings taking longer in the tub. Simple details can prove how unequal life can be. While some people are fighting for their life others are fighting against it. On that view given by Elliott, is possible to face with more than inequality; the real issue is how tight-lipped people shutter themselves when the moment of facing a social problem starts questioning their way of living.

A concrete visual element opens many more emotional pathways that abstract words alone. One of my strongest connections with Elliott’s article was the visual that she used along her article. The persuasive appeal of pathos identify the audience self-interest, in this article her words are vivid and specific but is not the same, as a readers, to see exactly how the room of a homeless shelter looks like, a concrete demonstration of pathos. She creates and addresses image of the room where this family lives among a few others. An image can work on our pity thus descriptions of painful or pleasant things.

Stories are normally the best path to get closer to an audience, just as Andrea Elliott does in her article, an author named Sherman Alexie in his book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian tells a story, he get to his readers by humor in order to evoke emotions such as joy and surprise, and often triggers a strong connection of friendships. In this book Alexie, introduces himself as a hydrocephalic, not very wealthy, but an amazing artist. This author uses simple but engaging words in order to connect with his readers. This story of Alexie is a simple kid trying to live a better life in between of two different cultures while trying to discover his own potential. So how many invisible children are worth telling their story? His rhetorical style is based on the same story telling that Andre Elliott presents, the difference is that Elliot’s article even though has support from data to build credibility is connect with Alexie’s by pathos, on this emotional appeal with vivid language and numerous detail that only a story can present.

A perfect example of this can be the article The Public Obligations of Intellectuals written by Michael Eric Dyson. He thinks that the problem of society is that has dumbed down, dumbed down till the point where people won’t take time to know the problem. I believe that 90 percent of the people that could have had access to Elliott’s’ article the problem could seem distant from them and out of their reach; but an action taken can be as simple as taking a closer look, a look than can be more meaningful than just turning the back and pretending that the problem is not there. If I compare Dasani’s economical poverty with tight-lipped people that are just pretending to be out of the problem, I get a 50-50. The story is based on a fact by pathos though a homeless girl that has plenty of what many lack. More than taking action the authors make a call that needs to be answer, and it can be as simple as getting into another’s’ shoes and at least taking the moral of this fable.

Meat Glue: When, Why, and How It’s Dangerous

“Meat glue” is a natural enzyme found in plants and animals which causes blood to clot. Recently, scientists have discovered how to mass produce the enzyme using bacteria, and that spreading it between two pieces of meat will cause the muscle fibers and proteins to fuse together, almost as if they were a single cut. Chefs have used meat glue for all kinds of creative purposes, forming proteins into all kind of wacky shapes, like spaghetti made entirely of shrimp. The meat industry uses it to pass off left-over scraps as filet mignon.

The enzyme itself is not dangerous when used correctly, and is labelled “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA. When used in reasonable quantities, it breaks down and becomes inactive in the process of gluing meat together, any cooking heat will and the human stomach can also quickly break it down with no ill effect. In its active, powdered form, it can be irritating to the skin, and could cause damage to the nose, mouth, or esophagus if inhaled or swallowed. But the same could be said of a lot of household chemicals. If you’re worried that food producers might accidentally contaminate your steak with too much, well, there’s a lot of things that food producers might accidentally contaminate you with. I don’t imagine the enzyme is especially harmful compared to the multitude of drug-resistant diseases in the world, and most food companies take this stuff very seriously, since they’re personally responsible if their product hurts someone. I’ve also heard that you can tell if the enzyme is still working because it will smell like wet dog (yet another reason to always sniff your meat before cooking).

Those with celiac’s disease or any sensitivity to gluten may want to pay attention to meat glue in the near future. Research appears to be preliminary, but it seems that the enzyme has an interesting response to gluten. Under certain conditions, the enzyme can make gluten even more allergenic, meaning that gluten free products with only trace amounts of gluten could become problematic. Other research says that meat glue may be used to render gluten entirely non allergenic. In the mean time, my recommendation is to source your meat carefully for now, and keep an eye on the news for further information.

Finally, we come to the real problem of meat glue, which has nothing to do with the enzyme itself and everything to do with its deceptive nature and the fact that it puts the outsides of meat back on the inside.

Most of us are aware that it is relatively safe to eat a steak rare, but that ground beef should be cooked all the way through to prevent food poisoning. That’s because bacteria and viruses don’t often penetrate meats; they just sit on the very outer surface. Ground beef, and meat glued products, have surfaces that could have been exposed to disease all the way through to the center, and have to be cooked accordingly. But because meat glue products look and are sold as ordinary steaks, consumers may not know that eating them rare could expose them to all kinds of serious food-borne illnesses. Steaks that have been reassembled from parts are now required to be labelled as such, but it is left to the consumer to find that label, understand what that means, and to cook it accordingly. An even bigger potential danger comes from restaurants, who are not required to pass that warning label on to you. Most responsible, high end restaurants understand the dangers involved with such products, and will handle them safely if they choose to use them at all. But if you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask where the meat comes from, and order them well if there’s any uncertainty left.

Final word: The glue itself probably won’t hurt you, but if you like your steaks bloody, be absolutely sure to get the genuine article.

Herpes Zoster – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Herpes zoster, also known as ‘shingles’, is a syndrome characterized by a painful, unilateral vesicular rash, usually restricted to the skin area supplied by a particular nerve. Herpes zoster is usually caused by a reactivation of the chicken-pox virus, which lies dormant in the spinal dorsal root ganglia. Common symptoms include pain in a particular area, followed by a rash which gradually becomes pustular and then crusts over a period of 7 to 10 days. The pain is usually described by patients as burning, throbbing or stabbing, and usually lasts up to 1 month. A few patients may have generalized symptoms such as headache, fever, malaise or fatigue.

The Ayurvedic treatment of herpes zoster is aimed at controlling the pain, treating localized symptoms and preventing complications like neuralgia. In the initial stages, when the disease presents in the form of blisters, an ointment containing medicines like Chandan (Santalum album), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis) and Haridra (Curcuma longa) is applied on the affected area. Once the blisters collapse with ulcer formation, an ointment containing Haridra, Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica) is applied on the affected skin. This application is continued till a complete resolution of the lesions.

In order to control pain, medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras and Vish-Tinduk-Vati are used. Herbal medicines which have a definite antiviral action are used to control the herpes zoster virus. These medicines include Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Yashtimadhuk, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa). Herpes zoster pain which lasts for more than 1 month is termed as post-herpetic neuralgia. To prevent this complication, medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used. Herpes zoster lesions which do not heal easily or which have a tendency to occur are indicative of a severely immuno-compromised status like HIV. In such situations, medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant and Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras are used to improve the immune status of the body.

In most patients with herpes zoster, the rash usually resolves within 2 to 3 weeks. It is important to prevent post-herpetic neuralgia, especially in elderly patients who are more prone to complications. Patients with involvement of the eyes should be referred to an Ophthalmologist for appropriate treatment.

Natural Remedies For Acid Reflux – How to Cure Heartburn Without Drugs

Natural remedies for acid reflux are a great way to treat yourself without risking the long term side effects of drugs. For example, many people taking modern acid reflux drugs are now experiencing symptoms of osteoporosis. In this article, I’ll give you the lowdown on the many natural cures that you can try tonight.

Aloe Vera Juice

This is a very soothing and tasty juice that you can drink to quench the burning sensations. It is best taken before a meal. Beware that it can have a laxative effect when taken in large doses.

Papaya

This is one of the only fruits that has amazing anti-reflux properties. It contains the natural papain enzyme which appears to aid digestion. You can either eat the fruit or drink the juice. I recommend the fruit for best results.

Burnt Toast

Burn toast contains a lot of carbon which is excellent for mopping up any liquid in the stomach and this includes excess acid that could otherwise escape and reach the esophagus where you would feel the classic burning sensation.

Chewing Gum

Saliva is a natural antacid. When you finish your meal you should chew some sugar-free gum for ten minutes and this is often enough to quell the acid. In some parts of the world, restaurants will give you gum immediately after a meal for this specific purpose.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Amazingly, this cure-all is effective even for acid reflux. Take about a teaspoon in a glass of water and sip it slowly. If you don’t like the taste then you can try and conceal it in a mixed drink.

One study has even found that apple cider vinegar can decrease the risk of developing esophageal cancer, which is itself a long term complication of untreated acid reflux.

Acid Reflux Treatments – An Overview

What is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux or Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is not a disease rather it is a condition. Over stuffing and under eating, excess use of spicy foods, regular drinking of alcohol and smoking accompanied with no exercise are considered as primary causes for acid reflux. In acid reflux the food in the stomach starts coming back to the esophagus. Food that is rising in the esophagus is not the simple food. It also contains strong acids and digestive enzymes. This acidified food burn the protective mucosal lining of the lower esophagus due to this burning mucosal lining becomes weak and even it is destroyed completely. This burning and destruction makes mucosal lining more sensitive to have ulcers and cancers. Most prominent sign and symptoms include burning sensation behind rib cage and stabbing pain in chest. Other symptoms include frequent coughing, difficulty in swallowing, sinusitis, voice changes due to damage of voice box and nausea. In case of improper treatments and ignorance acid reflux will be converted in to serious diseases like ulcers, strictures, inflammation of throat, larynx and lungs and even cancers.

Acid Reflux Treatments

Acid Reflux can be treated in two ways. One is proper medication and other is simple alteration in life style and eating habits. Whatever you use as acid reflux treatment it is highly recommended to consult with doctor. This is because of the fact that medicines used to treat other diseases can inhibit drugs used to treat Acid Reflux. Acid Reflux Treatments can be classified in to three broad categories.

– Changes and Alteration in Life Styles

– Medication

– Surgery or Laparoscopic Surgery

Changes and Alteration in Life Styles

In this treatment patients are advised to change their life style from eating habits to sleeping habits and even body postures during physical workouts. If we talk about eating habits patients will have to quit spicy foods, coffee, alcohol. It is also suggested to reduce the consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. It is also recommended to have smaller meal but more than 3 times. Avoid having meal just before going to bed. This will reduce stomach expansion during digestion. Chewing gum just after having meal will increase the production of saliva that in turns neutralize the acid in esophagus and in turn give relief in acid reflux. Patients are advised to follow the following guidelines

– Give up smoking.

– Cut down caffeine intake.

– Bring down stress

– Try to maintain ideal body weight.

– Try to avoid wearing waist fitted clothes.

– Do not do physical workouts after having meal.

Bad body postures such as bending or slumping that causes contraction of stomach can increase the chances of GRED. Patients are recommended to try to keep their body in straight and comfortable posture. Don’t sleep without pillow. Keep your upper body elevated this will not let the fluid come in esophagus.

Medication

Proton Pump Inhibitor Drugs

Specific drugs are also designed to use as acid reflux treatments. Some drugs lower down the acid production by deactivating cell surface molecules (proton pumps) in gastric lining. Proton pumps work with positively charged Hydrogen ions and increase acid production. Proton pump inhibiting drugs have serious side effects.

Antacids

Mild cases are treated with Antacids. Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide, Calcium hydroxide and Sodium bicarbonate are common antacids used as acid reflux treatments. Antacids increase the pH of stomach and decrease acidity by neutralizing acid in stomach. Antacids must be taken after one hour of having meal. Because antacid can not stay longer in the empty stomach and leave the stomach with in the hour. Meal increases the retention time of antacid in stomach. Other than lowering pH antacids have certain undesirable side effects. Aluminum containing antacids can cause constipation while magnesium containing antacids can cause diarrhea. Liquid antacids are preferred over tablets. Strongest liquid antacids available are Maalox II, Mylanta II, Gelusil II and Extra Strength Riopan

Alginic Acids

Alginic acid is the active component of foam barrier tablets. Foam barrier tablets contain Alginic acid in combination with aluminum hydroxide gel and magnesium trisilicate. Alginic acid in tablet form protective coating on stomach and lower esophageal mucosal lining. This allows cells to regenerate and repaired. Foam barrier tablets forms foam in stomach. This foam starts floating on the top of the liquid content of stomach. Foam act as physical barrier and does not let liquid to rise in esophagus. Two foaming barriers Gaviscon and Algicon are commercially available. It is recommended to chew well after 30 to 60 minutes of having meal or before going to bed.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines are also used to treat acid reflux. Stomach walls produce histamine. Histamine accelerates acid production by binding specific receptors present on acid producing cells of stomach. Antihistamine drugs bind to these receptors and block histamine binding that in turn reduces the acid production. Ranitidine, Famotidine, Cimetidine and Nizatidine are commonly used antihistamines or histamine antagonists. They are available without prescription as over-the-counter (OTC) but the dose of OTC is lower than those available by prescription. Antihistamine drugs are taken 30 minutes earlier than meal. This will make antihistamine available in higher concentration when stomach is actively producing acids to digest food. Antihistamine gives fast relief from primary heartburn and inflammation of esophagus.

Prokinetics

Prokinetics drugs act on lower esophagus muscles. As a result muscles become tough and accelerate the departure of food from stomach. Due to this food does not get the chance to return to lower esophagus. Due to dangerous side effects it is not recommended to use. Drugs have been withdrawn from the market.

Sucralfate

Sucralfate are used for proper functioning of digestive muscles. They improve the healing of esophageal muscles. It protects the sensitive mucosal lining. It is normally used in combination with anti GERD drugs.

Surgery or Laparoscopic Surgery

Severe Acid reflux can be treated through surgery. Surgical procedures are use to support lower esophagus. This will stop the rising of acidified food in esophagus. Surgical procedure used to accomplish this is called as Fundoplication. In this method stomach is wrapped over esophageal sphincter. Surgical treatment of acid reflux is very complicated. Before surgery extensive investigation has carried out to check the patient condition. These investigations include combine pH-impedance, testing assessing non acid, and acid reflux. Surgery is invasive procedure and must perform with extreme care. In contrast laparoscopic surgery is less invasive method. In this method tiny holes are made in belly button and upper abdomen. Patients get fast recovery. Laparoscopic surgery must performed by qualified and experienced surgeons.

What Are The Common Causes of Skin Graft Failure?

When it comes to a skin graft, there is always the possibility of a failure or even a rejection. For anyone who is undergoing one this can be a nuisance. It is a fact of life, and while you may make every attempt to prevent it, sometime no matter what you do, a failure or rejection may just occur. Much like any other type of transplant, sometimes these failures and rejections cannot be prevented.

To help minimize the chances of a failure, several guidelines have been pit in place as a means of preventing rejections and failures. For starters, it is usually not performed for a first or second degree burn. These types of burns in general, will heal without much scarring at all. Even if scarring does occur with a first or second degree burn, they can usually be remedied through a cosmetic procedure like a laser resurfacing technique.

Preventing a failure or rejection comes in two parts. The first part is in regards to the donor site. If yours involves lab produced skin grafts then this is not an issue. The second part has to do with the recipient site for the graft. Both of these areas need to be completely sterilized. The reason for this is that if the donor skin is not sterilized, it can carry with it bacteria which can lead to an infection as well as a skin grafting failure. If the recipient site is not sterilized completely, then the bacteria will get trapped under the donor skin and thus causes an infection.

There are the standard complications which are associated with it which may lead to a failure, but on top of these, there are also some cases in which the anesthetic or the donor skin may cause the failure. The most likely between these three though has to do with the donor skin especially if it is an allograft which means it is coming from another person. Just like any organ in the body, not everyone in your family can give you their skin and your body will accept it.

The most common reasons for a failure though has to do with the flow of blood to the recipient site. The newly grafted skin needs blood. Remember that your skin is also an organ and it needs constant blood flow to grow, regenerate as well as heal. If this blood flow is limited, then there is a larger chance that the skin graft will fail. Furthermore, the swelling associated with any type of bodily trauma can cause the skin graft to fail. Last but not least, even the slightest and most minute infection can cause it to fail, especially if it is due to trapped bacteria during the actual grafting process. This cannot always be prevented. The surgeon will physically do his or her best to ensure that all the bacteria are dead, but sometimes there may be some left.

How to Use Rutin As a Natural Hemorrhoid Cure

Try An Exercise Program On An Elliptical Trainer to Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure Levels

High blood pressure is a heart disorder affecting 24% of the American population. It is estimated that two-thirds will have this disorder as they age. A patient that presents with hypertension will usually be prescribed one or more medications to manage this disease, but these medications can be expensive and may cause other health problems. Aerobic exercise, like the type of workout you can get on an elliptical trainer, can be an effective way to lower blood pressure to normal levels.

Hypertension is defined as resting and systolic/diastolic greater than 140/90. This health problem can cause a number of serious health problems when allowed to stay at high levels over a long period of time. The heart may increase in size, which may cause heart failure. Those with hypertension are at a higher risk of stroke and heart attack because this condition can lead to hardening of the arteries. The kidneys can be adversely affected and may even fail due to the narrowing of the blood vessels inside the kidneys.

So what kind of exercise is effective for normalizing blood pressure? In general, to achieve maximum benefits, you should gradually work up to an aerobic session lasting at least 30 to 45 minutes, at least four to five times a week. Exercising at least every other day will help you keep a regular aerobic exercise schedule. The exercise should be moderately intense, but be careful to gradually build up to this type of exercise routine if you have been inactive for the last few years. Most of the reductions in blood pressure for those with hypertension happen within the first few weeks of starting an aerobic exercise program.

An elliptical trainer is a effective fitness machine if you want to design an exercise program to maintain healthy blood pressure. It is a versatile exercise machine that allows you to tailor an exercise program to your fitness level. You can vary the strides per minute, resistance, and incline to gradually increase the intensity of your routine as your fitness improves. This is a low impact exercise that is easy on the joints, so even those with mild joint pain may be able to use an elliptical trainer to address their high blood pressure without the use of medications.

High blood pressure is a major health condition that affects almost a quarter of the American population. This condition can cause serious health problems such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure, which is why doctors are so anxious to prescribe medications to manage this condition. Regular aerobic exercise can be an effective way to lower and keep blood pressure at healthy levels without medications. A new or refurbished elliptical trainer is a versatile fitness machine that will allow the user to design an aerobic exercise routine to fit their individual needs.

What Are The Top Eight Deadly Public Health Enemies?

In our society today, there are many people who are not well. They struggle with sickness, illness, and disease. Indeed, there are eight deadly public health enemies that are sending many Americans to an early grave. These health enemies kill more than 24 million people a year and cause untold suffering and disability on millions of others. Let’s discover what they are.

Public Health Enemy #1: Heart Disease

Contrary to the opinion of many, heart disease isn’t a disease of cholesterol but of artery inflammation. Many people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol. So, what is the true culprit here? “Oxidized” LDL, excessive free radicals caused by hypertension, diabetes, smoking, fatty meals, and elevated insulin levels. These problems, however, can be eliminated and the risks of heart disease significantly lowered.

Public Health Enemy #2: Cancer

In spite of millions of dollars spent on research and great advances in diagnosis and treatment of cancer, for many people who have cancer, many times the outcome is still a painful death. Cancer appears to develop from damage to the DNA of our cells by unstable molecules that have been occurring from 10-20 years.

Public Health Enemy #3: Stroke

Strokes can be deadly and typically occur suddenly with no warning. In the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995, Dr. Meir Stampfer reported that: “15 percent of all strokes could be related to elevated homocysteine, a by-product of protein metabolism that is elevated in individuals who have low levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12.”

Pubic Health Enemy #4: Diabetes

More and more people are suffering from and/or developing diabetes. This seems to be the result of insulin resistance. Many doctors treat the blood sugar level problem instead of the real problem, which is insulin resistance. There are many things people can do to prevent diabetes from developing to begin with.

Public Health Enemy #5: Osteoporosis

More than 25 million North American have osteoporosis. Poor bone health is the result many times of nutritional decencies. Failure to have adequate amounts of vitamins such as B6, C, D, K, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, and cooper, are a few essential vitamins in which inadequate amounts can result in poor bone health.

Public Health Enemy #6: Arthritis

Millions of people, over 165 million, have this painful and debilitating disease. More than 70-80% of the population over age 50 have some form of arthritis. Not only do non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication does not appear to slow the steady progression of this disease, but they also cause dangerous side effects which has resulted in hospitalization for some people and death others.

Public Health Enemy #7: Alzheimer’s

This disease is caused by oxidative stress. Over 29 million people suffer from dementia.

Pubic Health Enemy #8: Obesity

For the young and old, obesity is a huge problem. Also disturbing is the fact that for the first time in history, there are more obese people than people of normal weight. Many researchers are beginning to find obesity is related to insulin resistance as well .

So, there they are. The eight deadly public health enemies that are killing and debilitating millions. The good news is there is ammunition that everyone can have in his or her arsenal to fight back. What type of ammunition is needed? The “Top Ten Ways to Combat the Eight Deadly Public Health Enemies” will reveal just what they are.

Human Medications Toxic To Dogs

Every day, veterinarians treat puppies and dogs that have gotten into human medications; most, which can be or are toxic to our canine companions.

The degree of danger often depends on the type and amount of medication consumed as well as the size, age and general health of the dog. Smaller breeds, especially Toys, puppies and senior dogs are at higher risk of serious or fatal incidents. Dogs with pre-existing health problems such as liver, kidney or heart disease are also extremely vulnerable.

Check with your veterinarian before administering any human medications. Most likely they will approve of a buffered or baby aspirin as a general pain reliever. Follow their instructions!

It vital, for the safety of your puppy or dog, to make sure all medications are out of their reach. If you have a climber or counter surfer, put your medications in a medicine cabinet, drawer or secured cabinet.

Never store medications in plastic bags. Make sure purses, briefcases, backpacks and suitcases containing medication are where your pet cannot get into them.

A puppy or dog can easily break a medication container with their teeth! Plastic is like a magnet to them!

Inform house guests of your medication rules. Make sure to follow-up on their compliance!

Do not store pet and human medications together.

When counting out medications, get your pet out of the room. Should you drop one, they will find it quicker than you!

Keep medications in a secure container.

Do not leave medications on night tables.

Supervise children and the elderly when administering their medications. It is too easy for an accident to happen should they drop their pill, or even simply give it to the dog!

If you drop a pill, stop, and find it immediately! Don’t wait, you may forget…and it won’t take but a second for a puppy or dog to scoff it down!

Drooling, vomiting, seizures, disorientation, tremors, pale gums and lethargy are often common signs a dog has gotten into something they should not have eaten.

Should you even suspect your pet has taken the medication, don’t take any chances; get them to the nearest veterinarian immediately.

Medications and signs to watch for:

ACE Inhibitors – High Blood Pressure (i.e. Altace, Zestril…) Especially dangerous for dogs with kidney and heart disease. Get them to the nearest veterinarian immediately! Watch for low blood pressure (pale gums), dizziness, lethargic, or weak.

Anti-Cancer Medication – (i.e. Fluorouracil) Serious! Watch for vomiting, cardiac arrest, seizures, coma and death.

Anti-Depressants (i.e. Effexor, Prozac, Cymbalta, Lexapro…) Watch for elevated heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, sedation, tremors and seizures.

Anti-Diabetic (i.e. Avandia Oral, Actos Oral, Avandamet Oral… ) Watch for disorientation, low blood sugar and seizures.

Benzodizepines – Sleep Aids (i.e. Xanax, Ambien, Lunesta, Klonopin…) Watch for agitation, severe lethargy, disorientation, uncoordinated, appearing drunk, and slowed breathing.

Beta Blockers – High Blood Pressure and Irregular Heart Rhythms (i.e. Sectral, Coreg, Tenermin, Toral, Levatol, Inderal, Zebeta…) Serious! Watch for low blood pressure (pale gums) and slowed heart rate

Cholesterol Lowing Medications (i.e. Lipitor, Zocur, Crestor…) Watch for vomiting and diarrhea.

Cox-2 Inhibitors – Arthritis Medication – (i.e. Celebrex, Vioxx, Rubrin, Previcox, Dermaxx, Metacam, Rimadyl…) Watch for lethargy, vomiting, drooling, difficulty breathing, restlessness, pale gums, thirsty, loss of appetite, depression, diarrhea and weakness.

Muscle Relaxants (i.e. Baclofen, Soma, Flexeril, Zanaflex, Skelaxin…) Will impair their central nervous system. Watch for depression, disorientation, weakness, vocalization, seizures, coma and death.

Narcotics – Pain Medication (i.e. Codeine, Morphine, Oxycodone, Oxymorphine, Levorphanol, Methadone, Hydrocodone, Vicodin, benzodiazepeines, barbiturates…) Serious! Do not waste a minute…get your pet to the nearest veterinarian! Watch for depression, disorientation, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, weakness, vocalization, seizures, coma and death.

NSAID Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medicines (i.e. Tylenol, Ibupropen, Ascriptin, Naproxen…) Watch for pale gums, restlessness, breathing difficulties, excessive thirst, loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. Get your pet to a veterinarian immediately.

Cold and Sinus Medications (i.e. most Over-The-Counter medications) Serious! Get your pet to the nearest veterinarian. Watch for elevated blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, seizure and death.

Thyroid Medication (i.e. Armour desiccated Thyroid, Synthroid…) Many dogs are prescribed human thyroid medications. Should your dog get an extreme dose, watch for aggression, panting, muscle tremors, drooling, and rapid heart rate.

Tuberculosis Medication (i.e. Isonziazid…) Serious! Get your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Watch for seizures, coma and death.

Bottom line: By taking precautions and concentrating when taking or giving medications, you should not have any problems. But, accidents do happen. Be prepared. Know what to watch for and do not hesitate getting your pet to the nearest veterinarian immediately! A matter of minutes could be the difference between life and death!
