How to Sense Low Levels of Asbestos in Your Daily Environment

My discovery came to me by accidentally removing an asbestos

material in my home. The resulting condition of the whole house

after this accident left me with a sore chest, dry and unbearably iching skin and eyes. My wife complained of extreme thirst and my oldest son, age 14, developed severe asthma. This

all continued for five to six months. During this time I tried

desparately to determine if we were living in an unsafe level of asbestos. The material that I had removed was tested and found to

contain 20% crysitile asbestos. Air sampling proved to be unreliable because the area had been ventilated so well. But the furnishings, carpets, walls and all other personal belongings

were covered the remnants of the demolition.Everyone wanted to play down the seriousness of the situation, but, to me it was

obviously not a healthy environment.

So, I set out to try to logically deduce, with a knowledge of the physical properties of asbestos,when I encountered the substance as I attempted to clean every surface and item in every room of the house.

That was fifteen years ago. During that time, as I learned

more about where we all encounter asbestos materials on a daily basis. I made mental notes concerning my and others’ reactions

to these encounters. Many situations have arisen ranging from

sore throats and skin conditions(acne and basil cell skin cancer) to asthma, pneumonia and death. I don’t have clinical

proof of these claims I’ve made, except to say “if it looks, walks and sounds like a duck it probably is a duck”. Many times clinical trials are verified by producing the same results in subsequent testing. Deductive reasoning can also be verified

in the same way. If the same results are observed again and again after low level exposure to these remnants then that is

proof to me.

Without writing a book, I wouldn’t have the space to detail every observation I’ve made during this period, but I can assure you that no contact with asbestos is without a possible adverse health consequence.

Asbestos is a very lightweight chrystal-like material with highly static electrical properties. It often produces a static

discharge like when one is shocked by touching the metal switch plate or door knob in their home. It often leaves a bitter-salty taste in your mouth. It can stay airborne for days at a time. It absorbs moisture and produces a very dry environment (which only makes the static electric situation worse.)

The loose material may be accidentally contacted in a number of

building types and situations.

Many buildings built before 1977 have vinyl asbestos floor tile. No one can avoid walking on this, if they enter the building. This is fine if the floor is well maintained. Look out for broken or worn and never waxed tile. This applies to any

location in the building, commercial or residential. Closets are

very seldom waxed. Items stored there will accumulate certain

amounts of this substance.

Anytime an older building is renovated the possibility exists

for a number of materials containing asbestos to be encountered.

The contractor does’t always do the right thing. In many instances it is cheaper to pay the fine if he is caught. So he just tears it out and throws it in the dumpster or hauls it to the dump himself. As a consequence, many newly renovated stores

have a certain amount of this dust on the shelves and new merchandise in the store.

There are many more instances of contact for which I don’t have the time to detail here, but basically, with the characteristics of the material, knowledge of where you may encounter the substance and many hours of observation (I’ve been in construction over thirty years), you too can make the same

deductive conclutions that I have made.

In subsequent articles I intend to go into detail on the unique physical properties of asbestos and how this promotes detection in your hair and clothes. In future articles I would also like to expand on the many other health effects I’ve noticed, such as acne, which could benefit many young adults and a number of people who continue with this complexion problem into adulthood.

Is Your Antidepressant and Reflux Disease Linked?

There could be a link between antidepressant and reflux disease. Therefore, if you take antidepressants and are suffering from frequent acid reflux/GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), your antidepressant medication could be contributing to the symptoms you are experiencing.

Researchers have discovered that a link between antidepressant and acid reflux does in fact exist. Of course, there are different types of antidepressants and not all of them cause or exacerbate symptoms. The type of antidepressant that has been most commonly linked with GERD is known as Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). TCAs are a certain type of antidepressant designed to provide relief from symptoms related to depression such as sadness and irritability.

Tricyclic antidepressants work to restore and balance chemicals within the brain to help treat and prevent depression. However, though effective, these antidepressants also have a number of potential side effects including an increased risk of acid reflux. This link exists because the neurotransmitters the TCAs work on in the brain are the same as those found in the stomach.

Thus, both the brain and stomach are equally affected, which means when the TCAs slow down and relax the muscles in the brain, they also slow down and relax the muscles in the stomach. Hence, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) becomes relaxed, allowing the contents within the stomach to be refluxed back into the esophagus. In addition, the slowing down of stomach muscles can also cause delayed stomach emptying allowing acid to remain longer, increasing the chance of reflux.

The most common symptom to watch for if you think your antidepressant medication may be affecting you is heartburn. Heartburn is characterized by a painful, burning sensation within the upper chest.

Though there are other antidepressant medications, tricyclic antidepressants are commonly prescribed to treat a variety of depression disorders. If you are on any of the TCAs that have been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for depression and you suffer from GERD, or are noticing an increase in your acid reflux symptoms (I.E. frequent heartburn), you need to bring this to your doctor’s attention.

Tricyclic antidepressants include: Amitriptyline, Amoxapine, Desipramine, Doxepin, Imipramine, Nortriptyline, Protriptyline, and Trimipramine.

Your doctor may be able to suggest or approve another type of medication to treat depression to reduce the chance of reflux disease, however this attempt at switching medications may be unsuccessful. The reason is because there are diverse antidepressant drugs and everyone responds differently to medications. Thus, what works well for someone, may not be beneficial to another. Therefore, if TCAs are the only meds that work for you in terms of bringing depression under control, your only option is to try other methods to prevent or control acid reflux.

To help limit and prevent symptoms try the following:

  • Increase your intake of water
  • Limit or stop consuming alcoholic beverages
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat frequent and smaller portions of food.
  • Avoid foods that can trigger acid reflux or make it worse (i.e. spicy, fatty foods, chocolate, mint, caffeine, citrus fruits and juices)
  • Refrain from lying down or exercising at least one hour after eating
  • Sleep with your head elevated 4 inches to prevent reflux from occurring while sleeping.
  • Manage your stress. Stress can exacerbate GERD symptoms, learn how to reduce your stress by finding ways to relax and release your tension.

Finally, be sure to talk to your doctor about your antidepressant and reflux disease concerns. He or she may be able to help you find a method of acid reflux treatment that works well for you.

Most experts agree that the best way to do this is by learning techniques to control your breathing. Most panic attacks result in people hyperventilating so this is an important skill to learn. Ideally if you can control your breathing before you start to panic you will be able to prevent it becoming a full blown panic attack. There are lots of resources that you can use that will teach you techniques that you can use so it is best to look into some of these.

The next step to dealing with your monophobia is to figure out a way to function in daily life. This can be a problem for a lot of people depending on how serious the problem is. If you absolutely cannot be on your own at any time you are going to have to find people that you can be around all the time. This is not that hard to do if you live with somebody. Since there are few people with monophobia who live alone it should be possible to find somebody to be around.

Obviously needing to be around other people all the time is not a long term solution as it does not address the problem. Therefore the next step in coping with your monophobia is to slowly desensitize yourself. This means that you are going to have to start spending some time alone. The best way to do this is to start very slowly and do it for short periods of time. In the early days you will want to make sure that there are other people nearby in case you do panic. As you get more comfortable you will be able to move further and further away from your safety net. When you first start desensitizing yourself it is best to stay in places that you are comfortable like your home as you don’t want to add more things that may frighten you.

The above techniques will be useful in helping you control your monophobia so that you can reach the point where you can function in daily life. It will not however cure the condition in most people. In order to do that you are going to need the assistance of a therapist. During therapy you will explore the root causes of your fear so that you can address them and ultimately get over being afraid of being alone. This will usually take several months if not years of therapy so it is good to have coping mechanisms in place in the meantime.

Overcome Male Anxiety Approaching Retirement

For persons at or approaching retirement, the anxiety of their new freedom may be met with joy, or dread. Men are especially prone to feelings of loss when a lifelong career and the contributions they made on a daily basis suddenly end. The usual workday routine filled with scheduled activities is gone, and for some the wife may be losing patience with the 24/7 closeness.

Women who retire may suffer these conflicting feelings, as well. I can only write from a male perspective, so this article is mostly aimed towards advice for men. As a man shifts gears and approaches retirement, it’s time to get out of the house, interact socially with peers, and find an outlet to share your worldly expertise and lifelong lessons. If you’re married, your wife may offer encouragement to allow herself a well deserved break adjusting to having you constantly around and underfoot.

Years ago as a summer camp counselor, I learned the best technique for handling homesick children was using distraction to help them focus on all the fun things to do at summer camp. The results were amazing and immediate, and if you are retired or nearing retirement, finding your distraction could help you discover a broad range of senior activities as a retiree, too.

I recently encountered a prolific writer who has published works on a variety of topics. Granted he has a Ph.D. and is comfortable writing, yet he is 75 years old, married 52 years, and has 32 grandchildren. His outlet is writing, and he certainly is not bored. I should mention he owns a dozen websites going back as much as 10 years. The mindset that the elder generation is technologically challenged is obviously a myth. If you have avoided computers, it may be time to reconsider.

OVERCOME THE ANXIETY

The key to overcome male anxiety approaching retirement is finding outlets for your leisure time and ways to share your expertise with people who will listen. Here are some suggestions:

– Volunteer in your community to lend a helping hand to those in need

– Find peers with similar interests to bond and share leisure time

– Consider blogging on a topic of interest or expertise

– Get creative with a new hobby and build something unique

– Explore your artistic side and take up painting or sculpting

– Learn the methods for tracing genealogy and become a history detective

– Take field trips within 50 miles of home and encounter wonders of nature

– Write articles like this one and self-publish online to make new friends

The internet is filled with do-it-yourself advice and tips for managing your newfound leisure time as a retiree. Each item in the activities listed above can be done for free or minimal cost regardless of age or gender. While not all are outdoors, each provides a means to learn and grow while feeling a sense of accomplishment.

EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITY

Let’s take a look at just two items on the list, and some advice from a personal perspective. I’m within 10 years of retirement, so the timing is not right for me for all the options listed, yet I already do at least half of them.

Genealogy has been a hobby for 10 years. My surname could be traced back 100 years before I began researching it online around mid-1990. The internet was in its infancy yet I was able through contacts in Sweden to get my paternal line back to the year 1560. Despite improvements in the amount of information online, one source for studying genealogy that cannot be overlooked is oral history.

Consider making genealogy a hobby, and start with documenting known oral history from the living members of your family. It’s too late once they’re gone, and as a senior you can contribute to this project today to the benefit of future generations. Remarkably, I met a great aunt in 1996 that lived some distance away in a nursing home. She was born in 1900 and at age 96 she filled in many missing family history details like identifying the names of 2 horses in an old family photo of her parents and siblings on the farm.

A more recent example of activity comes from a long time friend with a hobby that you could learn easily, and then build something unique. My friend happens to be an expert fisherman and mechanical engineer who designs and builds custom boats for fun. Imagine buying the materials for a custom made kayak for around $50 USD, and then spending a few weekends with your child or grandchild building this boat. My friend offers instructions including the blueprints, and the job could be finished in just a few weekends.

In conclusion, these and the other examples of activities for senior citizens provide a starting point of what you might want to do in your spare time. Read the list again and then add your thoughts as you expand the list with unlimited possibilities. The opportunities to overcome male anxiety approaching retirement are endless, so let your imagination wander as you come up with ideas to spend your time enjoying leisure and helping others.

Indian head massage is said to be both a science and an art. It offers many benefits such as keeping hair strong, lustrous and healthy and provides relief for conditions such as tension and migraine headaches, insomnia and disturbed sleep, stress and related illnesses and tense back, shoulder and neck muscles. Indian head massage is a wonderfully relaxing therapy which leaves you feeling peaceful, calm, refreshed and rejuvenated restoring natural harmony and balance to mind, body and spirit.

What is Indian Head Massage and where did it come from?

Indian head massage is a combination of massage strokes and techniques which will vary from therapist to therapist, hence the reference to it being both a science and an art. Each stroke or touch affects the mind, body and spirit in some way and balanced with the way in which the stroke or touch is applied creates the art. Every therapist will bring their own energy to it.

Indian head massage comes from the Vedic wisdom of Ayurveda; the ancient system of healing which originated in India thousands of years ago. Traditionally, in India, a head massage is given from birth using oil. As well as increasing circulation the gentle touch of a mother massaging her baby is both soothing and comforting. Their energy will intertwine; resonate.

Most people are familiar with the ‘soft spot’ located at the top of a baby’s head. Known as the fontanelle this membrane covered opening is the space between the two bones of the skull which do not fully join until the infant is around 9 months old. During this first stage of a baby’s life because of the fontanelle, head massage with nourishing oils can directly affect the nervous system, which in turn benefits the development and functioning of both the brain and the eyesight. Indian mothers will also often place an oil soaked piece of cotton on their baby’s head to provide as much nourishment to their brain as possible. Traditionally sesame, mustard, coconut, almond and olive oils were used. In the present day therapists utilise the healing properties of essential oils which bring many other benefits to the head massage treatment.

Around 80% of the population of India live in small rural villages where the tradition of Indian head massage is very much a part of every day life. Head massage is an enjoyable family and social activity and its skilful art is passed down from generation to generation. It is not just limited to family life and indeed in India barbers used to offer ‘champi’ which means head massage as well as a hair cut. Interestingly the English term ‘shampoo’ derives from the Hindu term ‘champi’.

In seeking relief for stress related conditions people become more aware of the underlying causes of their stress and so in addition to being a highly effective therapy for relieving stress, head massage also enables people to become more self aware and thus healing can take place from within resulting in good personal energy.

Indian head massage can be provided with or without oils. Using essential oils will:-

The choice of oil will be dependent on the conditions and symptoms of the individual. Often a massage blend can be used containing many essential oils which will not only enhance physical and emotional benefits but add to the health of the hair.

How is Indian Head Massage performed?

The beauty of Indian head massage is that it can be performed at anytime and anywhere!

Whilst some therapists provide Indian head massage in a salon setting often lying down or using a massage chair, providing the space is clean, relaxing and peaceful all that is required is a comfortable chair with a low back (the head massage begins in the middle of the back). This makes it the perfect ‘lunch break’ therapy or alternatively in the comfort of your own home. Traditionally Indian head massage is performed with the person receiving the massage sitting upright on a chair fully clothed but this will vary from therapist to therapist.

Whether the room for head massage is in a salon, a therapist’s home or the client’s home, the therapist will prepare the room with relaxing music, dim lights, candles and a burner with relaxing Aromatherapy oils which usually compliment those used in the head massage.

The massage begins at the 10th thoracic vertebra and using a combination of massage strokes such as petrissage (finger tip pressure), effleurage (thumb sweeping), kneading and hacking clears the flow of energy to the head making it more susceptible to the massage. By rubbing, squeezing, manipulating, kneading, massaging and tapping the muscles and marmas, which as previously mentioned, are pressure points located throughout the body, in this case in the upper back, shoulder, neck and head, the central nervous system is strengthened. The central nervous system impacts on all the other systems of the body and so an Indian head massage gives the effects of a full body massage.

Therapists have their own massage sequence, techniques and strokes. As a rule of thumb this begins with the back, moving to the shoulders, upper arms, neck, head, ears and face finishing with a cleansing and balancing of the subtle energy system known as the chakras.

Although not all therapists practice chakra/energy cleansing and balancing, this is a huge aspect and major benefit of head massage and certainly what brought me to this wonderful therapy.

Can I perform Indian Head Massage myself or do I need a therapist?

My own recommendation is to balance the two. I would encourage you to seek a good therapist and have at least one head massage a month, two if you are able. In between perform head massage yourself once or twice a week. There is a specific book I recommend for this purpose at the end of this section.

Do check that your therapist has a recognised qualification in Indian head massage.

Do tell your therapist any conditions and/or symptoms you have.

Do ask about the use of oils and their properties to find the one or blend which is right for you.

My own introduction to Indian Head Massage

My daughter had an accident on her bicycle badly injuring her hand and breaking one of her fingers. The doctor said it would take around 8-12 weeks for her finger to heal completely and we had to attend the hospital weekly for the finger to be redressed and examined.

I have for most of my life been aware of my ability to tap into what I to that point could only describe as ‘energy’. I would perhaps feel something in a particular house or environment, know distinctly when something wasn’t right or be able to pick up on the feelings and thoughts of others without them actually communicating this to me.

Up until the point my daughter injured her hand however I had often been quite afraid of this ‘energy’ and most of the time had shied away from it.

My little girl was in such pain with her hand that without thinking much about it I said I would heal her finger for her. From the day the accident happened I would regularly sit and hold her broken finger focusing my ‘energy’ on healing it. I would visualise this healing energy pouring from my heart, down through my arm and out of my fingers to heal her finger.

She was discharged from the hospital after just four weeks. The more occasions I spent ‘healing’ her finger, the better it seemed to look on the outside and then as we visited the hospital we would be told it had got better. After just three weeks we were told that it had healed completely but we visited again on the fourth week to double check everything was ok.

I felt like I had magic fingers. We kept this experience to ourselves because I don’t think I was totally convinced that it was my ‘healing hands’ that had healed my daughter’s finger so rapidly. My daughter however had no doubt in the fact that mummy’s magic hands had indeed done the trick!

Following this I experimented a little. My mum had been experiencing tension headaches and she would often come over complaining of another headache and I would sit her down on one of my kitchen chairs and simply place my hands on her head and focus my energy to heal her headache. On most occasions her headache would go completely.

In Autumn 2006 I came across Indian head massage and felt that with my new found ability to utilise my energy it was the perfect next step. To this point in my life I had always worked in busy office environments and so taking this course changed the direction of what I now consider ‘work’

I have found that during the massage, particularly around the back, shoulder and neck area I can feel the tension in particular muscle groups and so effectively work on these areas to eliminate the build up of toxins which cause sore, stiff and aching muscles.

Tension is often released when I am massaging the upper arms and the neck area.

Stress is felt when massaging the scalp and generally the less freely the scalp moves the more stress the person is usually feeling.

Energy is passed from therapist to client and vice versa. Before I begin a head massage I always centre myself and focus entirely on the person in front of me and on the massage itself.

When I work with the subtle energy system at the very end of the head massage I can feel which energy centre is most imbalanced. I allow myself to be open to receiving this energy so that I am able to cleanse, heal and help restore balance. The massage closes with a throwing away of this energy, although subtle it is an important aspect and thus completes the therapy providing a refreshing feeling of peace, calm and relaxation.

I feel privileged to be able to do this; to help others in such a simple and yet highly effective way.

Ayurvedic Cure For Chikungunya

Introdution

Chikungunya has become the biggest scare in the world currently. After the epidemics of dengue and SARS, now chikungunya has grabbed the attention of people of the world. In some parts of the world, chikungunya is also called as Chicken Guinea, though this is a misnomer as chikungunya has nothing to do with chicken. Chicken Guinea is just an Anglicization of the word chikungunya.

The word chikungunya is etymologically rooted in the Makonde language of Tanzania, where it means ‘that which bends up’. This name is because of the painful symptoms which cause the patient’s joints to curve in an upwards position. The origins of chikungunya can be traced to 1952 in central Africa from where it has become rampant in Asia currently. The disease manifests itself as an epidemic, and if uncontrolled, it might turn into a pandemic.

The latest epidemic of chikungunya is currently going on in South India. The heavy floods in South India in the monsoon region have been responsible for the widespread outbreak of the disease. Southern states of India such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been the most drastically hit. A lot of research is going on in India with respect to chikungunya, in both the allopathic and the Ayurvedic fields. Most people have found Ayurveda to be a solution for chikungunya.

Definition of Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease that is very similar in symptoms and etiology to the more popular disease, dengue fever. The virus responsible for chikungunya is alpha-virus, which belongs to the togoviridae family. This virus is transmitted through mosquito bites. Only a specific type of mosquito is a vector, i.e. carrier for chikungunya. This is the aedes aegypti mosquito, which is active only in the daytime. The aedes aegypti mosquito is the same mosquito that is responsible for the transmission of dengue fever among humans. The condition of chikungunya is generally not fatal, and it can be remedied within five to seven days with proper treatment. The basic characteristic of the disease is a fever along with an arthritic-type of pain in the joints (which has given it its Sanskrit name).

Causes of Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted through the agency of mosquitoes. The responsible chikungunya virus is the alphavirus, which is carried by the aedes aegypti breed of mosquito. Hence, after malaria, filaria and dengue, chikungunya has become one more reason to exterminate mosquitoes.

The prime method of spread of chikungunya is through stagnated water. The aedes aegypti mosquito lays its eggs only in stagnated water. This explains why there is a widespread outbreak of chikungunya in India currently, which has just recovered from heavy floods in July-August.

Symptoms of Chikungunya

Chikungunya symptoms begin almost immediately after the viral infection. Some of the symptoms are:-

o Fever with very high temperature

o Acute pain all over the body

o Sharp pain in the joints accompanied by swelling

o Severe headache

o Profuse rashes

o Conjunctivitis

o Loss of taste in the tongue

o Mouth ulcers

The following Ayurvedic preparations have been found to be effective against the symptoms of chikungunya:-

o Sudarshan choorna – Two tablespoons of this choorna must be taken per day.

o Yogiraj guggulu – Two tablets per day are to be taken.

Here it is important to mention that there is currently a debate going on about the effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicines in the treatment of chikungunya, for which no other form of treatment has been found yet. Almost all Ayurveda exponents are of the opinion that chikungunya may not be treated by Ayurveda alone, but the herbs are effective in allaying some of the severe symptoms of the condition.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Chikungunya

The fever of chikungunya normally comes back to normal within two to three days, but the other symptoms persist for over a week or more. The fever is quite different from normal fever since it is accompanied by chills and feelings of nausea and vomiting.

There is no drug prescribed for chikungunya from the World Health Organization until now. Doctors are using aspirin, ibuprofen, combiflam, paracetamol, etc. to reduce the pains and the fever, but there is no universally acceptable treatment in allopathic medicine yet. Some people are benefited by some medication, while others are not. Some chikungunya people get healed on their own after a few days. Hence, medical science is not trusted enough where chikungunya is concerned.

This has led many people with chikungunya to turn to Ayurveda for seeking out treatment. Ayurveda also may not be able to treat the condition of chikungunya completely, but it provides the necessary resistance for the body to combat with the disease.

Since there is no medicine for Chikungunya in allopathy, people increasingly turning to traditional indian medicines (ayurveda). Ayurveda treatment of Chikungunya uses herbal drugs. Some of the kashayams (concoctions) prescribed are Amrutharista, Mahasudarshana Churna, panchathiktha kashayam, Sudarshan Churnam, Dhanvantaram Gutika and Amruthotharam Kashayam. Ancient ayurveda describes a similar condition called Sandhijwara which is similar to Chikungunya in its symptoms (joint pain). Hence some of the medicines can sooth joint pain. At the same time there are reports of fake medicines in which steroids are added. These can cause severe side effects in long term. Hence the best advice is to take rest and drink plenty of fluid food!

Prevention of Chikungunya Fever

Currently there is no vaccine for Chikungunya. There is only way to prevent Chikungunya fever – don’t get bit by a mosquito! This is easier said than done in a tropical area such as India. Some of the following precautions can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites,

o Use mosquito net when sleeping during daytime.

o Wear dress which covers most of the body. Also there are repellents available which can be applied on dress materials.

o Use mosquito coils or repellents(which contains Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or DEET). But you should be aware that prolonged use of these are not recommended. Also ensure adequate ventilation when these are used.

o Use curtains or window nets which prevent entry of mosquitos to the house.

o Use of cream or spray that can be applied on skin. This masks body odour and effectively you are invisible from mosquito. Very handy if you are visiting an area where Chikungunya is reported.

Summary

Chikungunya is an arboviral disease transmitted by aedes mosquitoes. The virus was first isolated in 1953 in Tanzania. Chikungunya virus is a member of the genus Alphavirus and the family Togaviridae. The disease typically consists of an acute illness characterised by fever, rash, and incapacitating arthralgia. The word chikungunya, used for both the virus and the disease, means “to walk bent over” in some east African languages, and refers to the effect of the joint pains that characterise this dengue-like infection. Chikungunya is a specifically tropical disease, but it is geographically restricted and outbreaks are relatively uncommon. It is only occasionally observed in travellers and military personnel. More than 266 000 people have been infected during the ongoing outbreak in Réunion, in which Aedes albopictus is the presumed vector. In the ongoing Indian outbreak, in which Aedes aegypti is the presumed vector, 1 400 000 cases of chikungunya were reported during 2006. The reasons for the re-emergence of chikungunya on the Indian subcontinent, and for its unprecedented incidence rate in the Indian Ocean region, are unclear. Plausible explanations include increased tourism, chikungunya virus introduction into a naive population, and viral mutation.

Pneumatic Walking Boots Vs Non-Pneumatic Walking Boots

If you do not know what a walking boot is, or have never had the privilege of using one, I am sure you have walked down a busy street and observed an individual walking around in what appears to be a ski boot. This may appear “odd” especially in mid summer, but that person is wearing a walking boot.

Most doctors refer to these devices as “CAM WALKERS” (controlled ankle motion walkers). They are available in hi-top or low-top walkers. The Hi-top extend to just below the knee cap, where the low-top extends just above the ankle joint.

The Hi-top walkers are usually indicated for acute ankle sprains, stress fractures of the lower leg, soft tissue injuries of the lower leg, stable fractures of the foot and ankle and post-operatively.

Low-Top walking boots are indicated for post-operative foot surgery, metatarsal and digital fractures and soft tissue trauma of the foot and ankle.

Your doctor will determine which type of walker is best for you.

One of the unique features of many Hi and Low top walkers is a “pneumatic” feature, which allows the doctor or patient to inflate the liner inside the boot. The purpose of this feature is multifold.

When the patients leg is places in the walking boot and securely positioned, this inflatable feature provides additional compression to the lower leg/ankle and foot. This is an ideal feature for patients post-surgically, when controlling swelling is key to reducing pain, and improve healing time.

When properly inflated, these types of walking boots provide better immobilization by contouring around the extremity and preventing leg and foot movement within the boot. This ensures better healing for patients with fractures that require no foot or ankle movement.

Many manufacturers obtain this pneumatic feature by placing a pneumatic “bulb” or bubble at the top of the walking boot. The patient simply turns a little rheostat located under the bulb to close the tubes and chambers and “pumps up” the chambers. When the patient needs to deflate the chambers, they simply turn the rheostat control and the air exits the chambers.

There is a slight cost difference between a non pneumatic and pneumatic walking boot, but for patients that want additional comfort and fit, it is well worth the additional cost.

Most novice riders consider gloves to be of no importance in riding bikes because all they have to do is twist the throttle and cling to the handlebars. Another category of riders wear motorcycle gloves for the sole reason of them looking good. But the fact is gloves play a vital role in motorcycle riding. Let us now take a look at a few reasons to wear motorcycle gloves.

• Hands tend to sweat a lot during extensive riding periods. This results in the hands getting wet and hence losing grip on the handle bars. Gloves prevent this from happening. • Gloves also protection in different weather conditions. Gloves are most useful in icy conditions. Our fingers become numb when they are constantly in touch with cold or chilly winds. A rider may choose any kind of motorcycle glove according to his choice. But the main things that he should keep in his mind are quality, size and comfort.

Sinus Fungus – This Disease Could Be Deadly

Whereas acute sinusitis is a short-term illness that responds well to medication and remedial treatment, chronic (long-term and repetitive) sinusitis is sometimes difficult to control.

Although sinus fungus is a suspect, the cause of repetitive sinus attacks is largely unknown. However recent studies have shown that the condition often occurs in:

  • immunocompromised subjects.
  • Diabetics.
  • People suffering from asthma.

Since most diabetics and asthmatics also have allergies and are susceptible to fungus, researchers believe that the two conditions are linked. If so, many people who present symptoms of chronic sinusitis may in fact be suffering from allergic fungal sinusitis.

In another study carried out by the Mayo Clinic, in 1999, fungal infections of the sinuses were prematurely blamed for causing most cases of chronic sinusitis.

However, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, carried out an independent study.

The results immediately cast doubt on the Mayo Clinic findings.

The reason? Although fungi was detected in the nose and paranasal sinuses of nearly all chronic sinus sufferers in the study, the same fungi was also present in almost all of the healthy controls.

Sinus Fungus

There are two types sinus fungus:

  1. Invasive fungal sinus.
  2. Noninvasive fungal colonization.

Invasive fungal sinus

This type of infection can be broken down into two sub-groups

a) Acute invasive fungal sinusitis

This illness is very rare, however, it carries a mortality rate of over 50%.

With acute invasive fungal sinusitis, sinus fungus actually grows into the tissues lining the sinus cavities and then into the bone itself.

Onset is rapid.

Bone, tissue and even the brain are affected within hours or days.

In order for the victim to survive this disease, the symptoms must be recognized early and treated aggressively.

Extensive surgical debridement is essential in order to remove every particle of infected tissue and bone. This is followed by ongoing intravenous antifungal treatment until the patient is out of danger.

Acute invasive fungal sinusitis normally manifests in diabetics suffering from a serious complication known as “diabetic ketoacidosis”. immunocompromised people are also at risk.b) Chronic invasive fungal sinusitis

This is a slowly progressive fungal infection that can manifest over months.

This illness also occurs in immunocompromised patients and diabetics.

Unfortunately the fungus is opaque to MRI examination. However, the disease (Orbital apex syndrome) causes optical problems such as deformity in the eye sockets.

This is apparent, because in many cases one eye appears to be higher than the other. Vision problems and ocular immobility are common.

Treatment with antifungal drugs and surgical removal of the infected tissue is mandatory. A prolonged course of systemic antifungals is required in order to prevent recurrence.
Noninvasive Fungal Sinus

In this a disease fungus does not invade tissue or bone, it merely colonizes the nasal passages and sinuses.

Nasal polyps form an anchor for the fungus thereby encouraging growth.

This promotes the formation of partially calcified masses known as “fungus balls.” These growths further obstruct the sinuses, leading to bacterial infection followed by an acute sinusitis attack.

Surgical removal of both polyps and fungus balls is essential. Once the obstruction is removed, no further treatment is necessary.

Men to the Rescue – How to Save Women From Breast Pain, Cysts, and Cancer

You know how excited men are about women’s breasts. Actually, men are obsessed.

This, of course, makes women obsessed, too. And it causes them to do very strange things to their breasts.

Women pierce them, stuff them, tattoo, push up, and constrict them, compress them, clamp them with underwires, wrap them, suck them out to make them smaller, toxify them with chemicals leaching out of their bras, routinely X-ray them with mammograms to look for tumors, and sometimes agree to surgically remove them to prevent breast cancer.

Women treat their breasts as fashion accessories. Many women even refuse to use their breasts to nurse their babies since this, they fear, will mar their breasts’ visual appeal.

Of course, from a biological perspective, breasts are for nursing babies. They also play a part in sexuality. However, as with all things, when people get obsessed, they go over the edge and start doing extreme things. The result is often disease.

Our culture causes disease by teaching us attitudes and behaviors that interfere with the way our bodies are supposed to function. When it comes to breast cancer, it is caused by an attitude that cleavage rules, and a behavior of daily bra wearing.

In fact, research has shown that the leading cause of breast cancer is the wearing of tight bras for long periods of time each day. Breast cancer is only a problem in cultures where women wear bras. Bra-free women have about the same incidence of breast cancer as men. On the other hand, women who sleep in their bras, or wear them 24/7, have a 3 in 4 chance of developing this disease.

Bras are constrictive garments designed to alter breast shape, which is accomplished by applying constant pressure to the delicate breast tissue. This constriction can impair the drainage of lymph fluid from the tissue, as the bra squeezes down on easily compressed lymphatic vessels. A healthy, unrestricted lymphatic system is essential for removing fluid and toxins from the breast tissue, and is the circulatory pathway of the immune system. Chronic compression and constriction of the breast lymphatic system by bras can result in fluid accumulation (lymphedema), breast pain, cyst formation, fibrocystic breast disease, and may lead to cancer. Signs of constriction are red marks and indentations in the skin left by the bra.

Why do women wear bras? It’s because our culture trains them to. Girls start learning when very young that they are expected to have beautiful breasts. Toddlers are dressed in styles that mimic adult clothing, including wearing “tops” to cover their immature breasts. As they grow up, they see endless images of women on T.V., in magazines, in the movies, all showing women dressed in bras. They play with dolls like Barbie, which wear a bra. Their moms probably wear a bra. And they eagerly look forward to getting their first training bra as a sign of entering womanhood.

If she has small breasts, she will pad her bra and wear push-up models. She may also opt for implants, which compress lymphatic tissue from the inside adding to the problems caused by compression from the bra on the outside.

If she has large breasts, she may be told the myth to wear a bra to keep her breasts from sagging. She will not realize that if her bra is worn too tightly and for too long each day, it could cause the lymph fluid in her breasts to back-up, resulting in larger, heavier breasts. Some women actually feel pain when removing their bras, a sign of breast inflammation from the bra and dependence on the bra for support. Ironically, while the bra is causing the problem, her pain when removing it may keep her from ever taking it off.

Are Bras Necessary? Do women need bras? Was the female body designed with a flaw that requires 20th Century lingerie to correct?

According to the fashion moguls of our time, bras are essential. However, at one time, fashion makers insisted on the hourglass figure created by corsets, which became a public health menace for centuries, resulting in all sorts of internal and skeletal diseases caused by compression and constriction of the torso. And at the same time in history that corsets were a fashion in the West, Chinese women were dutifully binding their feet for fashion, causing distorted, diseased, decayed feet and toes, all to erotically please their husbands.

Clearly, fashions are not designed for health. Interestingly, large breasted women in bra-free cultures say they have no “need” for bras. In Fiji, a place where about half the women are bra-free, the women getting breast cancer are the ones wearing bras. The breasts of the bra-free women are healthy, without pain, cysts, or discomfort. In fact, they say their breasts are “too big to wear a bra”. Women in predominantly bra wearing cultures, however, assume (as a result of lingerie industry advertising) that they “need” a bra for support. Actually, dependence on the bra causes the internal suspensory ligaments that naturally support the breasts to atrophy from non-use. Artificially supporting the breasts with bras causes droop.

Numerous women who have stopped wearing bras experienced almost immediate relief from breast pain and cysts. Once the constriction ended, the breast tissue was allowed to drain of fluid, and the problems greatly improved or completely disappeared.

There is much more to the history of body abuse in the name of fashion. The basic reason for it all is clear — to please men.

There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to attract a man, and keep him attracted. Each culture does it in its own fashion. The problem is when that fashion causes disease. How ironic that a disease that can maim and kill is caused by a product intended to bring people together.

But here’s the good news. This means most cases of breast cancer are preventable. All you have to do is stop wearing bras, or, at least, don’t wear them too tight for long periods of time a day, and certainly never wear a bra to sleep.

And this is where men come into the picture.

Guys, keep in mind that women are ultimately wearing a bra to please their man. So it is up to men to let their women know that natural and healthy is more beautiful than artificial and diseased. Women act as though they want to be loved for their looks. In reality, they fear rejection if their looks don’t match the images promoted by the fashion industry. And as they age, their fear grows, as worshiped youth slips away.

You need to let her know you love her for who she is, not for how well she conforms to fashion. Tell her that her breasts are beautiful because they are part of her. Encourage her to prevent disease by caring for her breasts, putting comfort and health before all else.

And as a bonus, give her a breast massage. After years of breast constriction, the tissue is damaged, congested with fluid, and toxified. Massage can help cleanse the tissue. It could be a therapeutic, lymphatic massage. It could be an erotic massage. It could be both. The important thing is to help the breast tissue recover from years of bra wearing. There should be no soreness. She should feel no pain when her breasts are touched. If she has pain, it is most likely from years of abuse by bras. Over time, this pain should disappear, as the breasts regain their health.

So this is both bad news and good news. Bras are a leading cause of breast cancer, so women have developed this disease as a result of current fashion. However, this also means most breast cancer is preventable. Women simply need to end their breast bondage, finding support in their men instead of their bra.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their women.
