Coping With Break Up Anxiety – What You Have to Do Exactly

From my experience, people suffer from anxiety and depression after a break up, they worry they might not have done the right thing; they want to get back to their exes with no apparent reason.

Most of the time they want to get back together for a totally bad reason. They can not move out of their comfort zones, they get used to their life styles, even if it was sad and full of problems and mistrust.

Coping with break ups is not always easy, but if you had the right knowledge about what you should do and what to avoid whatever cost was, you are on the right track to get out of the bottleneck.

The first thing you have to do is to determine whether break up anxiety root cause is the fact that you still love your ex or because you are afraid from being alone and meeting new people in your life.

If you really want your ex back, you need to cope with break up anxiety and depression, so when you meet your ex, s/he will find you strong, confident and attractive, no one is attracted to a needy, desperate person.

So you need to stick to these general tips if you want to cope with break up anxiety and depression.

– Do not contact your ex, as you know at the first stage of a break up the emotions are high and any little argument could develop to a total disaster, you can drain your emotional energy by writing some journals or crying when you are alone.

– Hide all your ex friend’s belongings, pictures, CD’s, gifts, you need to shift yourself from the emotional state that reminds you of your ex.

– Go out and meet new people, you will find people from both sexes, some of them might be good matches for you, who knows you might find that the break up was a blessing when you find the perfect match for you, and you might blame yourself that you had lost years with the wrong person.

– Go out, do not lock yourself in your room, this might be helpful at the few first days of the break up, but after that you need to smell some fresh air, go for excursion with some friends, find a nearby mountain and go hiking, join the gym or make a road trip.

– Enjoy new activities, there might be some things you wanted to do but your ex prevented you from doing it, if you like going to movies but your ex did not like the crowd in the movies theatre you can go to see the newest releases, or you can go play board games with some friends and family.

Coping with break ups is not a hard thing; most people move on and live, because a break up is a point in your life, you can not let it control and ruin the whole line, especially if you know that your opportunities are endless, there are more in this life than a broken heart and an ex who had left you.

Caffeine Sensitivity: How You Can Control It

What leads to Caffeine Sensitivity?

Caffeine sensitivity is dependent on our genetics. It is the DNA structure in our body that determines how much your body can process and metabolize caffeine. Whether you have a fetish for coffee, tea, cola or chocolate, you are actually consuming caffeine along with the other ingredients present in these foodstuffs.

Caffeine compels the adrenal glands to produce stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While you may get awake and alert because of this reaction, your friend might start feeling excessive jittery with a faster heartbeat. Many people take this drug to increase their concentration level. I know a friend who used to consume at least 2-4 cups of coffee daily to stay awake for studying till late night. She never felt any uneasiness due to consumption of caffeine, but there are many who if consumed more than a single cup of their favorite coffee feels uneasy and literally shaken. They experience a fast pulse, quick breathing and muscle tension. These people also feel jittery, shaky, nervous, irritable, anxious, and restless at times.

For hundreds of years, this drug has boosted a person’s mind and provided extra energy required for hunting animals for food. I once interviewed some athletes in my hometown who has all good things to say about caffeine. They said they feel boosted to do even better. However, a handful of them mentioned that consuming more than 500 mg of coffee per day made their heart beat faster. Some of them also suffered from insomnia. However, multiple studies have confirmed one thing that caffeine does helps an athlete excel his or her performance and get success.

Another very important aspect is that the more you consume caffeine the higher is your tolerance level. Quite naturally those of you who prefer coffee more than anything else will get accustomed to this drink more compared to those who consume caffeinated drinks occasionally. As you continue to drink caffeinated drink more, your response towards it begins to slow down. According to experts, this is a normal process, as the body cells become habituated with this drug and so responds less and less as you keep on consuming more caffeine.

To get rid of all kinds of unwanted health issues, doctors say it is best to control caffeine consumption. For example, ideally every human should intake only around 300 mg every day. You should drink coffee, tea or cola only when you need to get alert. For most people, the ideal time for consuming caffeine is early morning to stay boosted up all day long.

Levels of Caffeine Sensitivity

As per various research and data analysis, there are three levels of caffeine sensitivity:

1. Hypersensitivity

2. Normal Sensitivity

3. Hyposensitivity

You have high sensitivity to caffeine if you feel jittery, dizzy, start to sweat excessively or feel restless after immediate consumption of caffeine-enriched beverage or food. Even consumption of 100 mg and less affects these people. You can instead enjoy a cup or two of green tea or black tea to stay healthy and energized.

Normal sensitive people have no negative effects even after consuming between 200-400 mg (two to four cups) of coffee daily. However, if they consume over 400 mg, they might develop insomnia, nervousness, increased heartbeat and palpitation.

You are hyposensitivity to caffeine if even after having over 500 mg of caffeinated drinks every day, you are still going strong without any health problem. You have no trouble sleeping at practically anytime of the day or night. However, you might suffer a reaction, including apprehensiveness, jumpiness, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, high BP, etc. if you continue using the drug entirely.

Surefire Ways to Cure Toenail Fungus – Success is Guaranteed!

Toenail fungus is mainly a culprit when your toenail turns much more thicker than it should be. Infected toenail smells very bad. Any one infected by this infection has many problems like one can not move freely in a public area since toenail fungus makes one feels very awkward and embarrassing. On the other hand if toenail fungus is not treated within the time limit, it can cause a bigger problem which at the end will result in total destruction of your nail. However, there is nothing to worry because I have some working treatments for you to treat toenail fungus effectively.

Below are some working treatments:

1. Applying vinegar on the infected region – According to some latest researches made by professionals, it has been proved that fungus stops to grow in acidic surroundings. So professionals suggest that vinegar should be applied directly on the infected region to cure toenail fungus. You can soak your feet in vinegar if you want more effective treatment. On the other hand apple cider vinegar is also very effective acid, so you can also use this vinegar.

2. Tea tree oil – Tea tree oil is an oil extracted from tea tree which are mainly planted in Australia. This oil has specific essential properties that are reverse the growth of fungus. You can use a oil dropper to apply this oil directly on the infected area. Just keep doing this for a month or so and I am sure that fungus will be completely vanished from your nail. However this will take up to 2-3 months if fungus is in heavy amount.

3. Listerine mouthwash – You might be familiar with mouthwash since it is used by almost every one now a days. Listerine has some molecules in it which are anti-bacterial. That means that you can use Listerine to kill the majority of bacteria responsible for the speedy growth of toenail fungus.

So these were the three famous treatments for toenail fungus. I am sure that you will get good results if you follow them as I said, but wait I have another solution for you.

The method I am about to reveal is extremely powerful, cheap and very fast in terms of treatment of toenail fungus.

This method is known as “Nail that fungus forever”. It is so powerful that it starts to yield results within 24 hours. I myself used it for a week and completely got rid of fungus. Check out my resource box below for more information.

Grapefruit Juice: The Hidden Dangers Of Drug Interaction

Grapefruit juice is one of the healthiest foods around, right?

A cup of unsweetened white grapefruit juice has only 100 calories, no fat, more than 100% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C, and it’s got a zingy taste that can really get you moving in the morning.

However, grapefruit juice (including the juice found in your morning grapefruit half) can interact with certain medications, leading to potentially serious consequences.

Which medications does grapefruit juice interact with?

Grapefruit juice can interact with many different drugs that people take to maintain their health. If you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, you should ask your prescribing health care provider and pharmacist about any drugs that you’re currently taking and ask again whether new drugs interact with grapefruit juice. The list below contains some of the drugs that interact with grapefruit juice. This is not a complete list, so if you’re a grapefruit fan, check with your doctor before starting any medication.

* Valium (diazepam): This drug is used to treat certain seizure disorders and anxiety.

* Norvasc (amlodipine): This is one of the drugs called a “calcium channel blocker.” It is used to treat angina (chest pain related to malfunctioning arteries around the heart). Grapefruit juice interacts with many of the calcium channel blockers

* Pravachol (pravastatin): Like several of the “statin” drugs used to lower cholesterol, grapefruit juice can change the effectiveness of this product

* Cordarone (Amiodarone): This drug is used to treat “arrhythmias” – to correct irregular heart beat patterns.

What Are The Symptoms of These Interactions?

Use of any of these drugs while taking grapefruit juice can lead to serious complications. For example, the following have been observed in the interaction of each of the drugs above with grapefruit juice:

* Valium (diazepam): Grapefruit juice can cause you to feel sedated and might make it harder for you to control your muscular movements; driving can be dangerous

* Norvasc (amlodipine): Grapefruit interacts with several of the calcium channel blockers to provide a very fast heartrate (“tachycardia”) and/or a drop in blood pressure to below safe levels (“hypotension.”

* Pravachol (pravastatin): The statin drugs can interact with grapefruit juice to cause muscle toxicities, symptoms of which include muscle weakness, aches and shaking

* Cordarone (Amiodarone): Ironically, mixing this drug with grapefruit juice can cause an increase in the very condition it is intended to treat – arrhythmias

What Causes These Potentially Dangerous Interactions?

How can something as seemingly harmless as grapefruit juice affect the medications you take? It has to do with a special enzyme in your intestines and liver that help you absorb many oral drugs and then excrete them when you’re done with the drug.

When a physician prescribes a specific dose of drug (for example, one pill of 50 mg), she works on the assumption that given the size of your body, you will absorb the drug into your body at a certain rate and excrete it at a certain rate. Enzymes in your gastrointestinal (or GI) tract bring food and oral medications into your body. Grapefruit juice seems to affect both the rate of the drug coming into your body and how quickly it is removed. The end result can be an overdose of the drug) even if you’re taking the correct dosage for your size.

What Can I Do To Avoid Dangerous Drug Interactions?

If you are on medications that interact with grapefruit juices, avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. Spacing out the drugs and the juice (for example, taking your medication at night and having grapefruit for breakfast) will NOT solve the problem; the grapefruit juice effect remains even after you’ve stopped having it. If you like the health benefits of grapefruit, or just miss that morning zing, think about moving to other fruits such as tomatoes (a single can has just 41 calories and more than 70% of the vitamin C for the day) or oranges.

Metatarsalgia – What Causes it and How Can it Be Treated?

Metatarsalgia – Causes and treatment options

Metatarsalgia can be described as a severe pain or cramp arising within the anterior portion of the metatarsus. Thus, pain occurs under your metatarsal heads, or to simplify, in your forefoot region. At times it can feel as if there is a pebble lodged within your shoe or alternatively a bruised bone in the ball of your foot. So what are the causes of Metatarsalgia and how may it be treated?

Causes

The causes of Metatarsalgia a painful malady are many. Women suffer more frequently than men, due to their high-heeled narrow shoes. Wearing high heels puts added pressure on the metatarsal heads. plus, if the shoes are too narrow, this can put pressure on the anterior metatarsal arch. this arch normally flexes up and down as you walk. however if the shoes you are wearing are too tight and the ends of the arch are made rigid and thus no longer flexible, the result may be that one or more of the metatarsals drops out of alignment. when this happens, the bones are brought closer to the surface and can in turn become bruised, callused and inflamed.

If you have high arched feet, thin feet without much fat padding and prominent bones, or if you put lots of mileage on your feet as a result of sporting activities, you may become susceptible to Metatarsalgia. In fact anything that causes you to come down hard on your metatarsals can lead to pain within this area.

Treatment

Since one or more of the metatarsal heads is depressed, you need to elevate it. For home treatment try using a 6cm thick piece of felt or rubber, cut it into a 5-7cm long strip by approximately 5cm wide( depending on the size of your foot) and tape it behind your metatarsal heads.. A sporting goods store or better quality drugstore will stock commercial metatarsal pads or bars. Often a full length arch support with metatarsal pads built in is an available option. These often prove helpful.

Foot exercises such as picking up towels, marbles, or pencils with your toes can strengthen the anterior metatarsal arch, as well as stretch and relax your feet.

Usually Metatarsalgia will respond to a change in shoe environment or appropriate padding. If still experiencing pain and you visit a foot specialist, a recommendation may be made for a custom orthotic to redistribute the weight on your foot. Steroid Injections may be used to help reduce any inflammation and finally surgery as a last resort are other treatment options

Finding The Science In The Film Finding Nemo

One of the most beautifully animated films in cinematic history, Finding Nemo won over crowds and critics alike. With its heart-warming tale, detailed underwater scenery and cast of endlessly entertaining characters, this film has a special place in households around the world. But have you ever thought about bringing it into the science classroom?

Finding movies to show in a science class can be challenging; often you can only rely on short snippets from films, or on television programs like “Bill Nye the Science Guy” or “MythBusters”. Whether you’re looking for a multi-period lesson or for a reward movie to celebrate, Finding Nemo can fit the bill. It can be used to jump-start the natural interest that children have in ocean life, coral reefs, and marine biology.

This movie is one of the most curriculum-flexible films you can use. Screen it before, during or after a unit on marine biology. Show it during environmental science to discuss habitats and human impact. Finding Nemo is great for students of all ages, from age 8 to 18.

Older students who have finished a unit on marine life or have just studied the phenomenon of symbiosis, can take notes during (or after) the film on the types of marine life and scientific concepts seen in the film. There are dozens of types of marine life and biological concepts shown in the film, including: algae, anemone, atoll, camouflage, barrier reef, budding, calcium carbonate, clownfish, colony, commensal relationship, coral bleaching, crepuscular, diurnal, East Australian Current, equator, eyespots, food chain, fringing reef, habitat, lagoon, limestone, Loggerhead sea turtles, nocturnal, Pacific blue tang phytoplankton, polyps, predator, prey, reef, scavenger, sperm, symbiosis, symbiotic relationship, zooplankton, and zooxanthellae.

Have students compare and contrast the physical appearance of the creatures in the film and their real-life counterparts. How accurate were the animators? Students can also write a fun essay comparing and contrasting a coral reef to a city. Both have systems for power sources, waste management, housing, construction, health, and even advertising!

And then there is the analogy of a coral reef to a city. Who are the protectors? Who are the garbage men? Who builds? Who destroys?

Discussion questions can include:

– Give a description of three symbiotic relationships between animals on a coral reef. What does it mean when an animal is at the top of its food chain?

– When are predators more active? At dusk, at midday, in the night or in the morning? Why is this? “Diurnal” “Octurnal” What’s the difference?

– How could Nemo have avoided all problems that he caused himself and his father? Hint: it’s about obeying your parents?

– Name the largest non-human animal made structure in the world?

Welcoming Finding Nemo into your classroom can turn a routine marine biology lesson into an engrossing, and fun, experience for students of any age!

Causes of Adult Cystic Acne

Many people get puzzled as to what the causes of adult cystic acne may be, especially because this is a condition that has always been linked to teenagers only. The truth is that even adults who have never had any problems before can experience a sudden attack with little or no warning.

And so the question is what would be the possible causes of adult cystic acne?

Actually there are quite a number of reasons why an adult would suddenly and unexpectedly find themselves with this uncomfortable condition.

Hormonal imbalances are a common cause of acne in adults. Research has clearly shown that when the hormone balance in the body suddenly changes acne can result. These findings seem to be supported by the observation that pregnant women and those going through menopause are the ones who seem most likely to suddenly develop pimples.

These are the two groups of adults who usually go through the most radical changes in the levels of hormones. It is believed that this triggers an equally sudden increase of sebum in the pores of the skin and this is what causes cystic acne to suddenly break out.

On other occasions sufferers of this condition tend to bring it on themselves. They do this when they start pricking on blackheads and whiteheads on their skin. This is usually done using the nails on their fingers. This results in damage and the spread of bacteria and if the resulting infection is serious and widespread enough, then a severe case adult cystic acne could be the result at the end of the day.

Exercise is a good thing not only for the body but also for the skin. However too much of it could result in acne. If your exercise routine is sudden and drastic probably in the hope of cutting down a lot of weight very quickly, this could result in sudden changes in the hormonal make-up of your body causing a sudden outbreak of acne even if you are fairly mature and well past the age where this condition is common.

Sometimes the hormonal changes caused by a woman’s menstrual cycle can be enough to trigger a serious bout of acne. Already we know that many women will tend to develop a pimple or two a few days before they have their monthly period.

This is usually caused by the body’s estrogen levels decreasing at a time when her progesterone is on the rise. This hormonal imbalance may cause the sebaceous glands to produce much more oil than normal and this is what produces the pimple or two. However in extremes full-blown adult cystic acne could result.

On other occasions the environment and toxins that the body is exposed to could result in adults getting acne. When toxins and wastes accumulate in the body and are not expelled in good time, problems are inevitable.

Usually the body has quite a number of ways of getting rid of toxins which includes processing through the kidneys, liver, colon, small intestines and so on. This brings us to yet another cause of acne in adults.

If for some reasons one or more of these “cleansing” organs is not working properly, then what will happen is that the toxins will accumulate in the body and when the usual methods of expelling them become inadequate, the body will try and flush out the “poison” through the pores on the skin. Naturally what will happen next is that sores and painful pimples will start to appear on the surface of the skin. This is of course acne.

Yet another cause of adult cystic acne is a condition called Polycystic Ovarian syndrome. This is a disease that affects up to 10 percent of all women where irregular menstruation is one of the most common symptoms. Women with this disease will tend to have serious imbalances in their hormonal levels and when this is treated the acne will usually disappear.

Surprisingly even certain medications are known to cause adult cystic acne. Medications that are anti-epileptic and anabolic steroids are amongst a few of them.

Even physical pressure and friction on the skin can cause Acne in adults. This includes the straps of a backpack that is way too heavy or even playing the violin where the instrument is placed next to the jaw or chin.

All these are just some of the many causes of adult cystic acne and this condition is certainly not limited only to the very young.

A Cold Sore in the Corner of Your Mouth is Not Herpes, it May Be Angular Chelitis

Often we associate any sort of infection on the mouth as herpes or a cold sore. However, if the infection is not on the lips but right at the corner of the mouth, this may not be a cold sore but Angular Chelitis. The simplest way to “self diagnose” yourself is to look at a series of photos of actual sufferers of Angular Chelitis and compare it to your own symptoms. Once you know the clinical name of your condition it becomes a much simpler matter to research it on line and arm yourself with the right information before seeing your doctor.

Quite commonly, the prescription for Angular Chelitis is 1% hydro cortisone topical cream, however this ointment is reported by the majority as very ineffectual in easing the symptoms or curing the condition. Millions of Americans suffer from Angular Chelitis every year. The corners of the mouth form a legion much like a swollen paper cut, the ulcers split at the mouth if the mouth is opened. If left unchecked, Angular Chelitis is accompanied by a yeast infection of the mouth. Candida or oral thrush is a contagious fungal infection that coats the tongue making it swell with a whitish hue.

The cause of Angular Chelitis can be traced back to a vitamin and mineral deficiency, particularly iron which is most present in red meat. However, sufferers also report an attack is commonly initiated during the onset of winter or a cold few days. It seems their may be a link with the weakening of the immune system in some individuals, if they are exposed to sudden cold temperatures, leading to an out break of the infection.

This insidious illness effects the individual in other ways too. The condition on its own is not contagious, so you are free to kiss others without fear of spreading the infection. However, finding someone willing to kiss you may be another matter. The legions are quite obvious on the face and often sufferers lose any desire to kiss during an attack Affection is something we lose during the course of an Angular Chelitis attack. The majority of people would do almost anything to finally control the symptoms and cure this insidious illness.

Colorectal Cancer (Colon Cancer) – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Cancers arising in the colon and rectum are called colon cancer or colorectal cancer, and are usually believed to have developed from polyps. Colon cancer is very common in the Western world but is rare in Asia and Africa. Diets high in fat are believed to predispose humans to colorectal cancer whereas diets high in vegetable and high fiber foods help reduce the risk. Ulcerative colitis highly increases the risk for colon cancer. Genetic factors are also an important risk factor in this disease. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, anemia, breathlessness, change in bowel habits, narrow stools, diarrhea or constipation, red or dark blood in stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, cramps and bloating. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the standard line of treatment for this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of colorectal cancer is aimed at treating the main cancer, preventing or reducing its spread to other parts of the body and improving overall survival. Medicines used in this condition are: Arogya-Vardhini, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Panchamrut-Parpati and Saarivasav. Medicines which act on the ‘Ratka’ and ‘Mansa’ dhatus (tissues) are useful in this condition. These include medicines like Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Triphala (Three fruits), Nimba (Azadirachta indica) and Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica). Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Triphala (Three fruits), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) and Dashmool (Ten roots) are also very useful in this condition.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Parpati, Abhrak Bhasma and Heerak Bhasma are used to improve the immune status of the body.

Treatment needs to be taken for prolonged period to get good results. In combination with modern therapy, Ayurvedic treatment can reduce the tumor size, prevent or reduce the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, improve the immune status of the body and prolong survival. All patients need to be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team.

The She in Her: An Analysis of Ogot’s The Rain Came

A wise woman wishes to be no one’s enemy; a wise woman refuses to be anyone’s victim. -Maya Angelou

For all the years that I have developed a consciousness like mine, I was constantly slapped in the face by the incandescent standards of the universe and its littlest portion on how women should be. A woman is always portrayed as a gift from the skies, pretty and elegant, or a royalty in distress saved by a hero who makes her swoon, or an evil witch behind every man’s failure. But a woman is not a gift, she is not a possession, she is not an asset. A woman is not someone to be saved, if she is to be protected, then from what? And yes, this paragraph is always present on my feminist articles. The most tiring thing about being a woman is the fact that we should still have to battle for our image as individuals, which is an inflection of how I came into the idea that the purpose of human kind is to breakout from the chains of the stereotypical. Humans try to debunk and destroy what exists, from beliefs to lifestyles and even to the right color of pants to match your socks. This urge to be free is the reason why Jose was shot in a park, why Romeo and Juliet died, and why all the revolutions and wars occurred.

Grace Ogot or Grace Emily Akinyi, the Kenyan writer who happens to be the author of the story ‘The Rain Came’ and many other stories, presented the “Breaking-out” moment through the characters’ struggle against the binding chains of traditions and culture. Many of her stories are set against the scenic background of Lake Victoria and the traditions of the Luo people. Luo people are interesting, in fact too interesting, specifically their traditions. They don’t practice the common ritual of circumcision for males; instead they pull out 6 frontal teeth as a sign of initiation towards manhood. And these traditions are the common theme of Ogot’s stories, including folklore, mythologies and sometimes, oral traditions.

This theme is actually the center of “The Rain Came”, a story about a chief’s daughter who was chosen by the gods to be sacrificed in order for the rain to come. The story was originally entitled “A Year of Sacrifice” but changed into how it is now because of reasons I didn’t really get into. Ogot’s inspirations on writing were mostly form her grandmother’s stories to her when she was still young and her perception of conflicts of tradition in the society was further fed when she worked as a nurse and midwife in both Uganda and England. She also represented her people in the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).

In the story “The Rain Came” a myriad of traditional beliefs and societal rules were presented. The element of sacrifice, suppression of women’s rights, gender inequality, and the power of traditions was established. That statement will be explicated through the following analyses.

Labong’o

The story depicts Labong’o as a chief who, for the whole course of his life, tried to accept the order of the Luo ancestors. He married five women so he can get a daughter, and there came Oganda, but the confusion kicked in as the ancestors came into the medicine man, Ndithi’s dreams, that Oganda was chosen to be the sacrificial piece to the lake monster in order to end the drought and lure the rain in.

There are two implications of sacrifice in Labong’o’s character. First was when he didn’t have the choice but marry and marry again until he finally has a daughter, which was, as said, ironically taken away from him, making his efforts irrelevant, if I may say.

The second sacrifice is his daughter. As the people’s chief, he is obliged to always choose the betterment of the town over anything or anyone, even if it is his family, or himself. That is when the conflict of his role as a chief and as a father started.

”Never in his life had he been faced with such an impossible decision. Refusing to yield to the rainmaker’s request would mean sacrificing the whole tribe, putting the interests of the individual above those of the society. More than that. It would mean disobeying the ancestors, and most probably wiping the Luo people from the surface of the earth. On the other hand, to let Oganda die as a ransom for the people would permanently cripple Labong’o spiritually. He knew he would never be the same chief again.”

He was torn between tradition and family, but as how all contradictions in the world end, one of the opposing aspects prevails, and it is his role as a great chief. He chose to let Oganda go to the lake and die for the rain to come, for the people to live,to remain as the great chief who always puts the town first.

Oganda

“The ancestors have chosen her as a sacrifice to the lake monster in order that we may have rain.”

That is the line Labong’o said in front of the people as a declaration of Oganda’s fate. Oganda is the chief of the Luo people’s daughter, and yet, her status didn’t help to change her fate. She was chosen by the ancestors and there was nothing neither she nor her father can do against it.

Oganda is a name which literally means ‘beans’ because of her white skin, which is a rarity in Luo people which are a native of ebony people.

When her family sat inside the room with her outside, she thought that maybe they were just planning her wedding, and that alone signifies the inability of women in their society to make a stand on her own marriage. But the fact is, Oganda, and all the other women in their society just accept that as part of their life, and no trace of resistance from any female species was presented. They just accept things the society has to offer, it doesn’t matter if they deserve it, whatever they dictate, and that alone is sacrifice.

She was afraid at first, which is a natural reaction if you knew your life has to end for the security of the majority, but she still bravely walked alone to the lake and succumbs into her own death. Her courage was already established, putting honor to the women’s team, but Ogot made a twist. The man Oganda loves, and obviously loves her back, came behind her in the middle of her journey to the lake, and saves her.

“We must escape quickly to the unknown land,” Osinda said urgently. “We must run away from the wrath of the ancestors and the retaliation of the monster.”

Just when the going gets tough, when she’s all dried up without any water to drink, a man comes and saves her. Osinda, the great and the wonderful, comes to her aide. It is so cliché in so many levels like how Superman always saves Lois Lane, like Spiderman to Mary Jane. Men behind the hero masks, which reminds me of how female superhero characters are presented with minimal costume and perfect hair amidst all the battles and stunts. The way media portray beauty makes me want to vomit.

What does it really mean to be a woman? In this story there are a lot of mirrors that reflects women. Oganda is the woman who makes sacrifices. Even in Greek mythology, women makes sacrifices, even Gods. Hestia sacrificed her throne for Dionysus. Oganda’s mother is also one reflection. Her mother was sad, in fact mortified, that her only daughter has to die to make others live, but the only thing she could do is cry. Women are sometimes powerless. They are always under husbands and under societal rules, and I don’t mean it literally.

In the end, Oganda ran away with Osinda from the town and its entire people. She gave in to Osinda’s offer to run away and live happily ever after, away from the lake monster, away from the eyes of the ancestors, and away from her family. And just when they turned their backs, the sky turned dark and bore droplets of water. It rained. Everybody got their happiness.

Rain

Rain is one of the most emotional symbols used in literature, and in this story, all the characters’ actions is connected to this rain. The townspeople were beginning to panic for it’s been so long since it last rained and their resources are running out, and the fear of death among them started to rise as the coming of the drought. And as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures, so the people came into the decision of sacrificing a woman who has not yet met a man, which means a ‘virgin’, to yield rain, which is a very barbaric thing to do. All this sacrifice thing happening in the story makes me think that in all the stories I have read, it is a ‘must’ that the person to be sacrificed is always a virgin woman, even in the bible (Jephtha’s daughter). Why not a virgin man?

Anyway, at the end of the story, even if Oganda wasn’t actually offered to and devoured by the lake monster, the skies still shed rain. It can mean that, Oganda’s acceptance of her fate as a sacrificial lamb is enough to please the ancestors and give them the rain they want.

This story is a proof on how traditions influence a human’s decisions and acts. What we are today as individuals and as the human race in general, is a result of centuries and centuries of conditioning. Who’s to say that one’s tradition and beliefs is wrong? Who’s to say that we belong to a generation of idiots having our brains replaced by a virtual world we developed and coexist with, called the internet? What does it really mean to be a woman? Who sets the norms? I don’t know the answers to my own questions, all I know is we all have our own mind and it is a responsibility to actually use it.

Feeding Squirrels The Right Way

Few people realize the importance of feeding squirrels a well balanced and nutritious diet. After all, they’re only squirrels! Good squirrel nutrition is very important for some very logical reasons. There are people who love to hate squirrels, but squirrels play a very important role in our world. For those who take the time to observe them, squirrels can offer an endless supply of zany behavior that can bring a smile to your face and amaze you with their resolute ability to entertain. Squirrels also play a much larger role in the food chain.

As much as I love squirrels, the harsh reality is that squirrels are at the bottom of the food chain. The only thing lower is the occasional insect or grub worm that a squirrel will eat. Other animals depend on the squirrel to make up part of their diet. Therefore, it’s vitally important that the squirrel population be as healthy as possible. This fact is becoming even more critical as more predatory animals expand their range. Here in Ohio, the coyote could only be found in our Zoos 20 years ago. Today, coyotes have a growing population in all 88 counties. This puts a tremendous strain on the rabbit and squirrels population, that is felt all the way up the food chain! Limited numbers of game animals, such as squirrels and rabbits, will limit the ability of hawks and eagles to thrive.

Good squirrel nutrition translates into good hawk and eagle nutrition. We live in a cause and effect world. If you spray toxins on the ground, rivers become polluted and fish die. People who eat only fast food often develop problems with obesity or heart disease. The same is true with feeding squirrels. If you feed them junk food, they do not stay healthy and they become an unhealthy food for other animals.

Squirrels are like little children in many ways. They will eat almost anything as long as it tastes good. Just because a squirrel like to eat something doesn’t mean it’s good for them. Two common items people tend to feed squirrels are field corn and peanuts. Neither of these items are natural foods for squirrels unless they happen to live by a corn field or a peanut farm. Both have very poor nutritional value for squirrels, yet both carry a very high possibility of poisoning the squirrel. When corn or peanuts get wet, they become an ideal medium for growing Aspergillus Flavus, or Aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a carcinogenic, (cancer causing,) mycotoxin that will attack a squirrel’s liver and kill them.

Squirrels are herbivores, which means that their diet should mainly consist of vegetables. To keep squirrels as healthy as possible, they should only eat high quality vegetables, seeds, nuts and small quantities of fruit. When squirrels are in the wild and away from humans, they will naturally seek out these items. The problem comes when they depend on humans for most of their daily diet. If humans feed them peanuts and corn only, it’s equivalent to taking them to a fast food restaurant, with the distinct possibility of killing them. It becomes even more of a problem when one person tries to feed them right, while all their neighbors continue to feed them junk.

This problem is not insurmountable. There are now companies that specialize in Squirrel Nutrition! Some even provide you with easy and free recipes that make food and Squirrel supplements that squirrels really enjoy, yet provide the vital vegetables and nutrients that keep them tip top health. You only need to Google “Squirrel Nutrition,” to find ways to start feeding your backyard friends the right way!

Home Health Coding – History of Pressure Ulcers

Question: Should we go for V67.x (Follow-up examination following surgery) rather than a condition code for a healed stage 2 ulcer that we’re following for observation owing to newly healed status but are recertifying for observation? Should we make use of the follow-up code in lieu of the actual condition that now is resolved?

Answer: According to Lisa Selman-Holman, JD, BSN, RN, HCS-D, COS-C, consultant and principle of Selman-Holman & Associates in Denton, Texas, A V67.x code for following surgery would not be correct in this case.

Here’s why: The patient didn’t have surgery for the stage 2 ulcer. The only code from the category that you might think about of using is V67.09. That’s quite a non-specific code. You can’t code the stage 2 ulcer once it’s resolved.

The next issue at hand is whether the care you’re providing (observation and assessment) would be included, says Selman-Holman. Consider the time span from healing to the end of the previous episode.

Is there a probable fluctuation in the patient’s condition? Has the patient had repeated skin integrity problems or changes in caregivers that lead you to think that the patient is at increased risk of developing more ulcers? What other diagnoses does the patient have that show an increased risk for skin breakdown? Your answers to these queries must support the need for skilled care in home health coding.

Code V13.3 (Personal history of diseases of skin and subcutaneous tissue) is the apt history code for a patient who has a history of ulcers.

Tea and Acid Reflux – Natural Way to Treat Acid Reflux

Tea and Acid Reflux go together like light and dark. If light comes into a dark room, the darkness disappears! Tea can also make reflux disappear!

Many people have given up on their antacids which no longer work! After years and years of taking antacids, it seems like they are becoming more and more ineffective the longer they are used. On the other hand, tea is a natural and smoothing treatment that works to cure the cause behind acid reflux.

Let me explain how tea can work to treat acid reflux naturally and what types of teas are beneficial.

Treat Acid Reflux Cause

By treating the acid reflux cause, you will ultimately eliminate acid reflux. But do you know what the usual cause behind acid reflux is?

Acid reflux is most often caused by a damaged or weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The sphincter is the muscle tissue that sets on top of the stomach and is responsible for keeping food and stomach acid in the stomach. Unfortunately, after years of neglecting the health of your sphincter, your sphincter will become weaker and reflux is the result.

In order to cure the cause, you must use your diet and beverages to strengthen the sphincter. Here are some teas that you may want to consider for their healing ability.

Teas Curing Reflux

1. Green tea and honey has been an extremely popular tea for GERD sufferers. Honey has been long known for its healing abilities for tissue. Since the sphincter’s tissue is partially damaged and weak, honey makes perfect sense for the remedy.

Green tea comes in both caffeinated and decaffeinated. You should make sure to buy the decaffeinated kind because caffeine has been shown to trigger heartburn attacks. Many experts believe that green tea is extremely popular because it relieves upset stomachs and helps with effective digestion. A teaspoon of honey makes the beverage a bit sweeter and also aids with healing the sphincter.

2. Many people also try herbal teas to remedy reflux. One great herbal tea for GERD is chicory root which can also be supplemented with honey. Chamomile and fennel teas have also been popular. Again, these teas will aid in digestion which will greatly diminish the chances of refluxed food. Honey can be added to all of these types of teas for its healing properties.

3. Another remedy you may wish to try to treat hiatus hernias is a baking soda tea. Warm up water and add a teaspoon of baking soda to one cup of water. This baking soda tea works because baking soda will raise the pH level in your body and balance the acids with alkalines. In other words, you are neutralizing the refluxed acid.

4. Lastly, I would also recommend adding aloe vera to some of your green teas. Aloe vera has been long known for healing tissue. Aloe vera juice can be found in most health food stores.

Heartburn and Upper Back Pain

You might think that the heartburn you are experiencing is causing you unbearable pain and irritation. However, you will be surprised to find out that some people who suffer from heartburn experience upper back pain as well. Heartburn and top of spine pain are often related. Although there are many possible causes of tpp back injury, there is a chance that your upper back pain might be related to your acid reflux problems.

Heartburn is caused by the failure of your esophageal splinter. When your esophageal splinter fails to prevent contents in your stomach from flowing into your esophagus, the acid from your stomach can back flow and cause irritations and a burning pain. Most people who hear that their upper back pain is caused by heartburn find the fact illogical. Let us look at how heartburn can cause upper back pain.

When the acid in your stomach backflows into your esphagus, it stimulates some nerve fibers that causes pain to be radiated through your upper body. This also causes soft tissue damage in the upper back area. Usually, only patients who suffer from severe heartburn experience UBP due to this reason.

Soft tissue damage can cause long term pain and disability in severe cases. Apart from accidents, bruises, sports injuries and pulled muscles, you can also suffer from soft tissue damage through severe heartburn. Mild heartburn patients rarely suffer from UBP as the amount of acid back flowing into the esophagus might be minimal.

Habits can also cause injuries. In many cases, people who suffer from heartburn develop a habit of sleeping with their heads in an elevated position. While sleeping flat, there is less gravitational resistance to prevent the acid from back flowing into the esophagus. As a result, sleeping with your head in an elevated position might help you feel less discomfort. However, sleeping in such a posture will cause upper back pain in the long run. If you are suffering from both heartburn and UPB, you should take notice of your body posture. In some circumstances, back pain might pose to be a greater problem as compared to heartburn.

Game Addiction? How To Play Moderately And Live A Healthy Lifestyle

Have you ever experienced the feeling that you want something? And, you need it right away without delay? Or, the feeling that you wish to eat your favorite food? And, when that food is in front of you, you would feel the excitement to put that food in your mouth and taste its sweetness.

Let’s talk about vices in black and white manner, like the feeling of wanting to drink alcohol to be drunk, the urge to gamble, the need to smoke, etc. Or, let’s talk about the need for our basic survival: the need to eat, the feeling that you need a comfort room right away or the sleepy feeling and you need a bed to rest your back and sleep. That feeling is the same feeling when you are addicted to games.

I remember I started playing PC games during my college days way back 2000. During my high school years, I used to say to myself that I will never play video games and will never spend a cent on it. Unfortunately, peer pressure, I was invited by my friends to play PC games, and I discovered something which excites me every time I enter the computer shop and sit down in the chair with my eyes bulging on the PC screen.

To be honest, I have been playing games since 2000 until now. But there is a major difference between now and then. Before, I cannot control the urge to play PC or video games. There is no day that I would not touch a computer and play games. Before, I spent 10 hours per day in the computer shop and skipped meals just to satisfy my urge to play. Year 2001 I was diagnosed with Gastritis, worst result of spending more time in PC games. I even forgot to study my lessons. I was a graduating student back then when I was addicted to computer games. But thank God I was able to graduate college and had considerable grades though. But the addiction continued. After I graduated college I was able to land a good job. However, I spent more time in games than my work and I ended up hating the job and favoring my games. Year 2005 I had a relationship which would bring me a wife and a family. During those times, that relationship was shaken and tested because of my addiction. Following the urge, I always played PC games than be serious in my relationship. There were times my girlfriend would look for me in every computer shop because I never showed up in our date. When we got married and started a married life, of course a new couple we began buying home appliances. And, do you know what my first favorite appliance was? Bang! Personal Computer installed with games.

There was a time I was jobless but I never felt worried. I loved to stay at home and do nothing but games. I used to wake up early in the morning to play games. The cycle continued for several months. Favoring my PC games than anything even forgetting to go church or any birthday gathering or even spend time with my wife and friends. I came to the point that my favorite sounds are the battle cries of the online favorite character. There were times that I dreamed of those games that I played and I always received a bad comment from my wife in the morning when I wake up. I really felt the urge and excitement when I sit down and moved the mouse hearing the clashing sounds together with video graphic characters. And, the worst thing that happened to me is mimicking the mantra of those characters even when I am walking. My parents, wife and friends said something negative about my game addiction. At first, I never accepted their remarks, however, I realized that I was addicted to PC games and it’s ruining my entire life.

“In vertus medio stat,” “always stay in the middle,”

“In medio stat virtus:

Virtue stands in the middle.

Virtue is in the moderate, not the extreme position.”

That’s what Aristotle said. Virtues stay in the middle when both sides are extreme. Any technological gadget that offers fun and excitement is designed for leisure but too much of it is extreme. After that realization, I was caught in the struggle between fancy world and real world. I even tried to sell my personal computer just to avoid being addicted but it was not a guarantee. Computer shops are open 24hours in 7 days. Horrible! How will I ever stop this craziness?

All I can say: It’s a personal decision and all the struggles can be done by you. Your parents, friends and relatives can offer you options but still it boils down to your personal decision to say “NO” to your bad habit.

Things that I do to overcome my struggle:

1. I never stop abruptly; I just put restriction to myself. First, five hours of playing games, 2 hours for the next weeks and one or two days without games.

2. I avoid long term games like online games which would need more time just to level up.

3. I began choosing a game that can be finished in one month. Like Call for Duty and its entire version and other games that can be finish but not online games.

4. I controlled the urge by firmly saying to myself “NO” and it’s not time for playing.

5. I kept on telling myself not to be silly and stupid, and do things that are real and connect with real people.

6. I managed my time. Give time to your parents, family, kids (if you have) and friends.

7. When I felt the urge to play I try to stop it and say “NO”, that would be a hint that I can overcome my emotions. I usually go somewhere else without bringing any gadget.

I love games and I love to spend time with it but not more than five hours or more in a day. There are things that are more important than that. That is only a want and it is not a need. I offer you no guarantee with all the things I listed above because it is you and yourself is the main factor who can decide and change yourself. Just play moderately.
