Feet and Inches Per Minute: A Basic Primer in Machining Speeds and Feeds

This document will help explain how to achieve maximum tool life and productivity by allowing the reader to better understand SFM, IPM and how to calculate them.

Surface feet per minute (SFM) is the concept of what speed the very tip of a cutting tool is travelling in comparison to the material it is cutting, Inches per minute (IPM) is the how fast to feed your tool.

Using the correct SFM and IPM will provide a good balance between production speed and tool life. Excessively high SFM can result in the cutting edge of a tool degrading almost instantly, as the materiel that makes up the cutting edge overheats and becomes softer than the material it is cutting. Tooling with wide cutting angles such as negative rake inserts can handle higher SFM/IPM than tooling with narrow cutting angles like positive rake inserts as there is more material to support the tip, and to absorb heat away.

SFM is RPM * PI * Diameter / 12″, Where diameter is the diameter of the work in a lathe, of the drill when drilling, and of the end mill/face mill when milling. The / 12″ is because SFM is in feet, And typically one measures the work or tool in inches.

You can calculate what RPM you need with:

RPM = Desired SFM * 12″ / PI / Diameter

this can be simplified to

RPM = Desired SFM * 3.82 / Diameter.

Using 4 instead of 3.82 makes math much easier in your head, and results in only a 5% higher SFM result.

As far as what SFM to use, this depends on what material you are cutting, and what material you are cutting it with.

Recommended SFM is what the industry has found to be the most productive for good tool life. Using lower SFM is acceptable, Using higher SFM will often burn out tools rapidly unless the cut is very shallow. Increasing SFM past these recommendations for a finishing cut of less than 0.005″ depth of cut is often used on mills and lathes.

Mild steel being cut with HSS has a recommended SFM of 100. It is recommended to aim for steel chips that turn a light golden colour a few seconds after cutting. If they turn darker or blue, your SFM and/or feed rate is too high. Carbide can handle chips that turn blue, however these chips are much more of a burning hazard to the operator.

Stainless steel being cut with HSS has a recommended SFM of only 50 to 80, depending on alloy. Some harden alloys as low as 30 to 50 SFM. Carbide can handle the toughness and abrasive nature of stainless much better than HSS and is highly recommended for stainless steel.

Most Aluminium alloys are very soft and absorb heat well. They however need sharp tools, and with negative rake carbide tools, high SFM can be needed to achieve a good surface finish.

Aluminium being cut with HSS has a recommended SFM of 200, Sometimes much more depending on what chart you consult, up to 600SFM on some.

Plastics being cut with HSS can be cut with exceptional high SFM, However melting of the plastic, not the tool will limit SFM in practice.

Typically with carbide you can double the SFM of HSS, However during interrupted cuts, it is recommended to use lower SFM to reduce the impact stress on the easier to fracture carbide and is best to use a more durable grade of carbide. In the C# series of carbide, C1 through C4 are used for cast iron, non ferrous and non metallic materials, while C5 through C8 are for steel alloys as they resist wear and pitting better, But do not deal with impact stresses as well.

Generally, the higher the C number, the more wear resistant and brittle carbide will be, In the C1 to C8 range. Grades C9 and above are for totally different tasks and may or may not be more brittle than C1 through C8.

Ideal feed rates and depth of cut and different from material to material. You should calculate feed rates from a desired tooth load. Feed rates are measured in Inches per minute (IPM), And tooth load is measured in inches.

Tooth load = IPM / (RPM * cutting edges). This applies to mills. drills and lathes however use chip load (CL). That is just:

Chip Load = IPM / RPM

Desired chip or Tooth load, depends on the finish you desire and material and tool size. Larger tools can handle larger loads. To calculate what tooth load for drills and end mills, You can use:

Tooth load = Diameter * 0.017

Smaller tooth loads are typically used for finishing passes when milling. For turning, Inserts will often have recommendations on depth of cut and feed rate, with custom ground HSS experimentation will be required to find the ideal feed rates, as chip color is the main indication in such a case.

To calculate a feed rate, you would use:

IPM = Tooth load * Cutting Edges * RPM Generally, one should use the manufacturers recommendations for tooth load for milling and turning.

Excessive tooth/chip load can chip cutting edges or even snap tools. A proper balance between SFM and IPM will give you the highest tool life and productivity.

Some common feed and speed mistakes to avoid:

Using too high a RPM for a drilling steel, with too little pressure. 100 SFM * 4 / 1/2″ = 800 rpm, meaning not only is the typical 1800 rpm portable drill way too fast, but with only 1HP of a typical small drill press or portable drill, you can only feed at about 5IPM in steel before stalling at 1/2″ drill size.

This results in 0.0062″ CL (5IPM / 800rpm), A little low for a 1/2″ drill (Recommended 0.0085), But it will overload 1hp drill press to achieve that, and would quickly damage a 1800rpm drill to run at high power levels at lower speeds. a 1/2 inch drill will easily withstand that much feed pressure as long as it is straight down. It is better to run even slower, and produce larger chips that will easily clear the drill flutes without snapping, And you cut more with less linear feet of material cut, hence better tool life. a 500rpm portable drill is highly recommended for drilling 3/8″ to 1″ in steel and will operate much better at full RPM a higher speed drill with electric speed reduction, And will still drill smaller holes fine, just slower.

Using low depth of cut and feed rate, thinking it saves tool life and machine wear. The extra passes cutting will cause extra tool and machine wear. If you want to save on tool life, reduce the RPM until you are able to cut at the ideal chip load for the tool. Use high depth of cut and chip load, as fewer deep cuts is more efficient than many small cuts, If you have a gearbox or multiple pulley speed reduction, You can get high torque at lower RPM’s and cut amazingly efficiently at low speeds, If you have electronic variable speed only, Using higher speeds only if HP limited.

Using high SFM when deep drilling plastic, The friction of the drill flutes heat up and melt the plastic. The drill bit itself may also heat up and melt the plastic if the time between holes is short. Some plastics do not respond well to high feed rates, So high production rates may require coolant/lubricant to prevent melting, or allowing the tool to cool down while other operations or tools are preformed.

Allowing a tool to dwell or rub on work hardening stainless steel alloys. The alloy will quickly harden and it may take a carbide tool to be able to cut through the hardened skin. Always use low enough RPM that you can achieve an aggressive feed with stainless steel and never stop feeding until the tool is clear of the work.

Using too low a feed rate on a lathe. Using higher feed rates can greatly improve chip control by causing the chip to fracture into smaller chips. Depth of cut and feed rate are critical to proper chip control and one should pay attention to manufacturer recommendations on chip load and depth of cut for proper chip breaking. Low feed rates and depth of cut do not extend tool life and the extra cycles needed to complete a job will wear out a machine more than the extra stress of deeper cuts.

Dr. F. Karach, M.D., presented a paper before the All-Ukrainian Association. The meeting was attended by oncologists and bacteriologists belonging to the Academy of Science of the USSR. Dr. Karach explained an unusual simple healing process using cold-pressed oils.

The results of this therapy invoked astonishment and doubt concerning the contents of his report. However, after further examining the workings of the oil therapy, one has but to then test it on oneself to prove its validity and effectiveness. It is most astonishing that such results can be achieved with this absolutely harmless biological healing method.

This simple method makes it possible to effectively treat the most varied diseases, in some cases enabling one to avoid surgical intervention and the taking of medications that can have harmful side effects.The exciting factor of this healing method is its simplicity.

It consists of swishing cold-pressed oil in the mouth( Sunflower or Seasme, Pl. note you don’t need to go for organic oils only, A normal refined sunflower oil bought from any supermarket proven to be effective in many people). The healing process is accomplished by the human organism on its own.

In this way it is possible to heal cells, tissue and all organs simultaneously; the body itself gets rid of toxic waste without disturbing the healthy microflora. Dr. Karach says human beings are living only half their life span. They could potentially live healthy to be 140 to 150 years old.

The method

In the morning before breakfast on an empty stomach you take one tablespoon in the mouth but do not swallow it. Move Oil Slowly in the mouth as rinsing or swishing and Dr Karach puts it as ‘ sip, suck and pull through the teeth’ for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood.

The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic.

As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth , the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly. Just use normal tap water and good old fingers to clean.

Clean the sink properly, you can use some antibacterial soap to clean the sink. Because the spittle contains harmful bacteria and toxic bodily waste. If one were to see one drop of this liquid magnified 600 times under a microscope, one would see microbes in their first stage of development.

It is important to understand that during the oil-pulling/swishing process one’s metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health.

One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.

The oil pulling /swishing is done best before breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.


(a) Do not swallow. The oil should be spat out. But inadvertently if you swallow there is nothing to worry. It will go out through feces. Nothing is to be done.

(b) If you are allergic to a particular brand of oil, change the brand of oil or oil itself to different oil.

(c) Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils. Use refined oils.

Results of Oil Pulling

The result of this healing research has attracted amazement and resulted in further research. This additional research concerning Oil Therapy has now been thoroughly documented, especially with regard to physiological similarities between individuals.

It is surprising that through this biological healing method a wide variety of symptoms have unquestionably disappeared without any side-effects. Poison Ivy-Did You Know There Were So Many Symptoms!

Exposure to poison ivy usually results in an allergic reaction, which occurs when your skin comes in contact with the plant and or its oil. Some people are not allergic to poison ivy, but most people break out with rashes, blisters and develop an itching sensation after coming in contact with the plant. This usually occurs after coming in contact with the plant or any thing else that may contain the plants oils such as clothing, tools, ash and smoke from burning plants. You would usually see signs of poison ivy between the first twenty four to forty eight hours after coming in contact with the plant.

Most contact with poison ivy occurs during the summer months, this is because poison ivy is found mostly in the woods or forests and during the summer a lot more people participate in outdoor activities. The rash would usually occur on the face first and then spread through out the rest of the body. The severity of the rash would be determined by the thickness of your skin, and how much actual contact you had with the plant. Sometimes the rash is centralized on the site of contact and develops on only one area of the skin or is more severe in one area than in others. The rash can not be spread by scratching but scratching can lead to infection and could leave scars.

Swelling of the throat and eyes, or the entire body can also be caused by poison ivy’s rash as the symptoms spread. Other symptoms can include stomach cramps, fever, a general feeling of discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, vomiting, blisters and red blotches that may be raised or flat. Itching is the most common symptom and would likely be the first sign you would notice. The blisters will eventually break open, ooze out and then crust over. Of course you don’t want to experience any of these symptoms in the open woods, itching is annoying on its own but diarrhea, nausea or headaches can be disastrous in the wild.

If poison ivy is consumed it can result in fatality. People may mistakenly ingest poison ivy fruits simply because they look like all other berries to the untrained eye. Poison ivy poisoning is a very unpleasant experience and one which can leave you ill for a long while. So the next time you’re in the woods, looking for a bush or tree to do your business behind, be careful where you lean or squat. Contact with poison ivy should be avoided at all costs.

Recent studies of brain function of people who are highly susceptible to hypnosis show that when they act on the suggestions made during hypnosis, their brains show profound changes in how they process information. The suggestions actually change how people interpret what is true about what they see, smell, hear, taste and touch. Hypnosis can change a person’s perception of reality. So, if you stand on the scale and see 150 pounds and think “I am fat!”, you teach yourself, and you believe, that you are a fat person. If you see the number 150 on your scale and you think “I am a person who is losing fat” (especially if you saw 154 on the scale a week ago!) you are more likely to believe that and in fact act like a person who is losing weight. And so, you do.

Hypnosis has been famously used for questionable entertainment. A hypnotist induces a trance or relaxation state in a volunteer and makes suggestions that the hypnotized person receives as a description of what is- of the truth. So when the suggestion is that you will cluck like a chicken- if you are a person who is willing at some level to cluck on stage, you will delight your audience with chicken behaviors. The idea that you do so involuntarily is in question.  There is no proof that a hypnotized person will behave in ways that are against their values, or against their will. But if you are willing to be an entertainer (get up on stage, as every as-yet unhypnotized volunteer chooses to do)- then you will be open to clucking once there, if that is the suggested entertainment you provide.

Even with little research into how it works, hypnosis has been used in medicine since the 1950’s to treat pain and, more recently, as a treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, irritable bowel syndrome and eating disorders. In the 19th century, doctors in India successfully used hypnosis as anesthesia, even for limb amputations. When ether became available, hypnosis was no longer used.

Brain scientists are still not exactly sure what the hypnotic state is. It may simply be a natural form of deep concentration in which you become oblivious to distractions in the room while focusing on your thoughts.  Now, according to Dr. Posner and others, new research on hypnosis and suggestion is providing a new view into the learning process and normal brain function.

It turns out that information from the eyes, ears and body is carried to primary sensory regions in the brain. From there, it moves to other regions where interpretation occurs. For example, light bouncing off a rose first reaches the eye, where it is turned into a pattern that is sent to the visual center in the brain. There, the rough shape of the rose is recognized. That pattern is next sent to the next area of function, where color is recognized, and then to the next region, where the shape and color are added up to create the image ‘rose’, along with other any other knowledge you have collected about roses.

We process sounds, scents, touch and other sensory information the same way. Researchers call this direction of flow feedforward. As raw sensory information is carried in bundles of nerve fibers to a part of the brain that creates a meaningful impression, the data is moving from bottom to top.

The surprise is the amount of traffic the other way, from top to bottom, which is called feedback. There are 10 times as many nerve fibers carrying information down as there are carrying it up.

These elaborate feedback routes mean that consciousness, what people see, hear, feel and believe, is based on what brain scientists call “top down processing.” What you see is not always what you get, because what you see depends on the history of your experiences. You use what you already know to help you interpret the raw information – you see a rose or a hammer. 150 is a number that means “fat” or ‘losing weight successfully”.

This brain structure explains hypnosis, which is all about creating such powerful top-down processing that the hypnotic suggestions you give yourself become your reality. Brain scans show that hypnosis changes your relationship to information you have learned to think of as true. “I always regain weight” or “I can never lose this fat.”, can be replaced with “I am successfully losing weight” and “I am a fit, trim, agile and muscularly toned person.” Top-down processes override sensory, or bottom-up information, said Dr. Stephen M. Kosslyn, a neuroscientist at Harvard. People think that sights, sounds and touch from the outside world constitute reality. But the brain constructs what it perceives based on past experience. Most of the time bottom-up information matches top-down expectation, according to researchers. But hypnosis is interesting because it creates a mismatch. We imagine something different, so it is different.

When you want to lose weight and keep it off, you can use self hypnosis to change how you think about your self and what you are capable of. When you do that, you will find yourself behaving in ways that make your preferred picture come true. Imagine yourself happily exercising in some way every day. See in your mind’s eye the delicious healthy food you take pleasure in nourishing yourself with. See yourself in the clothing size you want to wear, engaged in the activities that you want enjoy, and make it so, with regular use of well designed self hypnosis sessions.

Why Diabetics Struggle With Weight Loss

One of the most perplexing problems that diabetics face is weight loss. Many doctors insist it is a simple matter of consuming less calories than are burned. And, in a perfect world that works. But most diabetics will insist that there is more to it, because when they do the same things as non-diabetics, they get no results, while their non-diabetic friends drop pound after pound. Fad diets do not work, diet products do not work, even exercise shows little or no results. The struggling diabetics are right– there is more to it than just cutting calories.

Diabetes is caused by eating a bad diet, and a good diet is a key part of regaining control. But it is the bad diet that has placed a number of conditions in place that must be understood in order to win the fat war. There are a number of interrelated circumstances that contribute to making diabetic weight loss difficult. First, let’s look at how the problem originated, then we can investigate how that information can lead to reversing the problem.

Years of bad diet, containing fats, sweets, high glycemic index foods, prepared foods and dairy products caused inflammation. A complete detailed explanation of how inflammation caused diabetes can be found in the “Diabetics Handbook” (see below). The following will be a gross oversimplification, due to space limitations, but hopefully, it will demonstrate the important aspects of the problem. Pro-inflammatory substances (pro-oxidants) are normally used by the body to fight disease and infection (via the immune system). They play many important roles in the body including digestion, and even breathing. Normally, the body uses antioxidants to control these processes. However, years of bad diet, which is characteristically very low in antioxidants, causes an immune system to lose the ability to shut down. Consequently, the immune system begins to attack healthy cells causing serious damage. In type I diabetes, the beta cells (insulin producing cells) are destroyed. In type II diabetes many cells are damaged setting up a condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells cannot properly communicate when using insulin to uptake and burn glucose.

When the body digests food, particularly carbohydrates, it is converted into glucose. Glucose is distributed throughout the body in the bloodstream by the liver. The liver will normally control fat levels. When very high levels of fat are in the bloodstream, due to diet, the liver cannot process it all. It begins to fill its cells with sacs of triglycerides (converted glucose for storage) and it places the excess in the adipose tissues (belly fat).

The brain, vital organs and muscle tissue rely on glucose which provides energy to function. As these organs use glucose, the liver will place more in the bloodstream to replace it. In a perfect world, the organs and tissues would use it efficiently, and hopefully in proportion to the amount produced by food. Insulin resistance reduces the amount of glucose that is absorbed and stored by the organs and muscle tissue. Add to that, the fact that most diabetics lead a sedentary lifestyle, meaning that they get minimal amounts of exercise resulting in much less glucose being burned.

When the body is impaired by insulin resistance (type II diabetes), the cells do not use as much glucose. The body senses that glucose levels are building up in the bloodstream, so it instructs the pancreas to release more insulin. The body now has high glucose levels and high insulin levels in the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone that performs many functions, besides allowing cells to absorb glucose. Insulin will also attempt (vigorously) to remove excess glucose from the bloodstream by placing it in storage as fat. Once in storage, insulin will block the process of breaking fat down to remove it from storage. Many doctors say that the presence of high levels of insulin in the blood causes unnecessary water retention in the body, which is a factor in weight gain. This is a key aspect of beating diabetic obesity, which means that insulin regulation is very important. Insulin also acts on the brain. It promotes cravings that result in eating more and on the liver to manufacture more fat. The liver removes insulin from the bloodstream, but insulin causes fat to be deposited in the liver which, in turn, prevents the liver from removing insulin from the bloodstream. People with belly fat store too much fat in their livers (fatty liver disease – see below), which prevents the liver from removing insulin. consequently, insulin levels rise higher and higher, which can contribute to heart attacks and more abdominal obesity.

Also, fat in the abdominal area functions differently than fat elsewhere in the body, such as the hips. Blood flow from the belly fat goes directly to the liver. The blood flow from other fatty areas, such as the hips, goes into the body’s general circulation. Belly fat has an efficient blood supply and has as more receptors for cortisol (a stress hormone). Cortisol levels vary throughout the day, but will elevate and remain elevated if the body is under stress. High stress and high cortisol levels promote fat deposits in the belly area. It goes to the belly area because there are more cortisol receptors there. Chronically high cortisol levels kill neurons in the brain. They also interfere with neurotransmitters (such as dopamine and serotonin – the good mood neurotransmitters) which leads to depression and feeling more stressed. Depression is common in diabetics, which adds to the problem since depression causes a stress type reaction in the body. In other words, depression promotes the development of belly fat.

The fat that is stored in the adipose tissue (belly fat) is also a characteristic of diabetes. That means that diabetics are genetically prone to belly fat. Belly fat (central obesity) is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease, and several types of cancer as well. Heredity plays a role in overall body type (apple vs. a pear shape). Genetics accounts for 25-55 % of the tendency to develop the most serious diseases associated with abdominal fat, the remainder is lifestyle. As belly fat builds up, it does several things. First, it stops the production of the hormone leptin, which normally would curb appetite. Second, it causes insulin resistance to further increase, which has obvious consequences. The cells use less glucose, the body produces more insulin, and guess what… more fat goes into storage. Fat storage is the body’s way of following ancient mechanisms designed to protect the body during lean times. Cave men would sometimes go long periods of time between successful hunting campaigns. So the body learned to take advantage of good times to prepare for the bad times. The body converts glucose into glycogen and triglycerides which are very efficient methods of storing energy.

When the cells of the liver fill up with triglyceride fat sacs, the liver’s function is impaired. It cannot process fats efficiently. It quickly runs out of room to store more fat, and when the body’s tissues and organs are not using as much, the liver simply puts it all into storage as belly fat. The number of fat cells a person has is determined at birth. The numbers remain constant unless the fat cells become full. When they become full, the cells will divide creating new fat cells. The new cells will remain throughout the balance of the person’s life. However, a successful diet will reduce the size of the fat cells. Fat cells are fed by blood vessels in the belly area. Each fat cell is in contact with at least one capillary. The blood supply provides support for the metabolism. The blood flow will depend upon body weight and the overall nutritional state. The number of vessels will increase during fasting or high demand for glucose. Increased numbers of blood vessels can contribute to increasing blood pressure. The heart simply has to work harder to supply the additional vessels.

A liver that has many cells filled with triglyceride sacs is called a fatty liver NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease). Any diabetic that has large amounts of belly fat likely has a fatty liver. Fatty liver develops early in the process because of high levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Diabetic fatty liver’s second stage is called NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis), meaning that it is not caused by alcohol consumption (but similar), and it mimics damage caused by hepatitis diseases. Oxidation of cells begins to occur causing cell damage. The third stage is cirrhosis which is very serious and dangerous. The first stage of fatty liver is not particularly dangerous, and will go away with proper treatment. Fatty liver is difficult to diagnose. The only reliable test is to conduct a biopsy to determine how much fat is present and if any scarring is present. Biopsies are rarely conducted, because the medical industry cannot agree on how it should be interpreted. The symptoms of NAFLD are nondescript, non-existent or mimic symptoms of other diseases. Certain blood tests will display the presence of certain liver enzymes that are common in hepatitis, which would signify the presence of NASH. Fatty liver will seriously complicate the weight loss process.

Parasites will virtually stall weight loss efforts. Parasites are more common in diabetics than a non-diabetic person, due to their weakened state. Unfortunately, western medicine doctors have little training in recognizing the presence of parasites. Few people are trained in testing for them. Most common tests have a very low accuracy rate. Treating parasites with drugs is rarely effective because they have a very narrow range of effectiveness. There are over 100 common species found in humans and treatments are very specific to specie. Parasites escape diagnosis in as many as 70 chronic diseases, and are now believed to be instrumental in the development of many chronic diseases.

When parasites are present, patients will have virtually no success in losing weight. Reduced portion sizes, carbohydrate counting or elimination, or even vigorous exercise will not produce results. Parasites inflame the lining of the digestive tract, and slow nutrient absorption. They eventually spread to all areas of the body, including vital organs. Also read about glycemic index and load. Modify the diet to eat only low glycemic index foods. Stop eating any of the pro-oxidant foods, especially processed foods, which is basically anything in a box or can that has ingredients that you cannot pronounce, or it’s unknown as to why it is in there.

Then assume that you have a fatty liver, because you probably do to some extent. This is the tough part. The most success comes from combining a series of techniques. Fasting and exercise are effective to break the cycles and burn liver fat. But it must be done correctly. If liver and/or kidney damage is present a doctor should be consulted. An alternative to fasting is to start eating 6-8 very light, low glycemic index meals per day, instead of three large meals. That will reduce the glucose spikes that exacerbate the process.

Change the diet. Stop eating the pro-oxidant foods. Processed foods are poison to diabetics, which cannot be stressed enough! Processed flour is very bad for diabetics (actually for everybody). Sodas are high in pro-oxidants and phosphoric acid, drink green tea instead. However, be careful, some bottled green teas have additives in them, including phosphoric acid. Stop drinking coffee. Eat only very lean cuts of meat. Stop eating sweets, sugar substitutes and dairy products. Never cook food at high temperatures (over 400 degrees F) or microwave food. That means that grilling and broiling are out. Microwaves kill as much as 97% of the living nutrients in food. Steaming, stir frying in olive oil or boiling food is best. Diabetics should eat fruit if their system does not react to them (glucose spikes). Pineapple and bananas are very high in natural sugar. Eat low glycemic index foods only. Take a good quality multivitamin daily, such as Rejuvenage 40+, which is sold on the internet. If a multivitamin is being taken, compare the product label to the sample label posted on the internet. This particular multivitamin has the broadest coverage of nutrients found on the market. Eat lots of fiber, especially water-soluble fiber.

Glucose management can be improved if sodium levels are managed, and fiber levels are kept high. Sodium slows the insulin response, which means higher sodium levels can be an advantage for hypoglycemia. High sodium levels prevent a quick rise and fall in insulin levels, and subsequently reduce the blood sugar highs and lows commonly experienced with hypoglycemia. Sodium, along with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and biotin are among the most important factors in reducing erratic glucose level changes; even between meals. Manganese, chromium and niacin/niacinamide control glucose response as well as the liver’s storage of glycogen. Potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C can both, help stabilize, or interfere with glucose management depending on whether a patient is prone to be hypoglycemic, or hyperglycemic. Lower amounts are recommended for patients that are prone to hypoglycemia, and higher amounts for patients that are prone to hyperglycemia. On the other hand, high amounts of potassium can reduce manganese and chromium. High amounts of vitamin C can lower manganese and stimulate insulin. Vitamin B6 stimulates magnesium and potassium, but lowers manganese. It can become complex. It should be noted that too much sodium in the diet is never a good thing.

Eliminate candies, honey, sodas of all types, donuts, cereals (especially sweetened), cakes and bakery goods, over ripe fruits, fruit juices (unless diluted), sugar (both brown and white), syrups (corn, maple and molasses), glucose, sucrose, fructose (of any variety), dextrose, maltose, or any substance ending in “ose”. Eliminate all artificial sweeteners except Stevia. Most of the bakery goods contain synthetic additives, along with processed flour, both of which are highly pro-oxidative.

It will be necessary to start exercising to maximize the burning of glucose in tissues. Power walking for approximately 45 minutes, preferably daily, will burn upwards of 300 calories each day. Exercising other major muscle groups is important. The fasting and exercise program should be alternated with non-fast and exercise programs (3-5 days each). Depending upon health conditions, choose between a water or a juice fast. The water fast is more aggressive. Don’t lose weight too fast. It can damage the liver. Most people lose 3-5 pounds after the first several days and an additional 3-5 pounds the next day, it will level off at a pound per day after the initial loss. It is customary to not lose weight during the non-fast phase. Then repeat the cycle. The “Diabetics Handbook” covers a variety of programs, the most aggressive being a 30 day fast, which will totally detox the entire body as well. It is known to release toxins present since birth. Fasting is safe, and very effective. Exercising a muscle does not get rid of fat over the specific muscles that are exercised. The only way to reduce a fat belly is to lose weight overall, and any type of exercise will help accomplish that. There’s a growing body of research showing that the fastest way to burn off belly fat is by a combination of weight training, aerobic exercise and modified diet. Bear in mind that increased muscle mass, from exercise, will increase body weight as fat is lost.

Physical activity is clearly beneficial for diabetics, including lowering blood glucose levels. However, physical activity can make levels go too low, causing hypoglycemia for up to 24 hours afterward. For those taking insulin, or one of the oral medications that increase insulin production, the breaking of routine (fasting) by having a snack, may be required if the glucose level goes below 100 mg/dL. Adjusting medication doses before physical activity can help avoid hypoglycemia. For some diabetics, it may be necessary to consult a doctor while on aggressive programs. A snack can prevent hypoglycemia, provided that it is a low glycemic index food. Extra blood glucose checks, especially 2 hours after strenuous exercise, may be advised. Place increased emphasis on maintaining blood sugar levels. Hold them as close to normal as possible. In type II diabetes that will reduce the amount of excess insulin in the bloodstream. If insulin-dependent, or type I diabetic, avoid taking more insulin than is required to maintain control. Many diabetics assume that more insulin than is needed is not necessarily a bad thing. This is a critical phase that requires lots of testing and focus. The combination of lower insulin, lower glucose levels and vigorous exercise will allow the body to quickly start burning the liver fat. It takes up to 12-16 hours for the body to start drawing fat from the liver. Exercise will increase the metabolism. However, understanding the metabolism will be helpful, because the metabolic rate will change throughout the process. Exercise reduces stress levels. If high stress is an issue, try stress reducing activities such as deep breathing or meditation. Be certain to take antioxidant supplements during the fasting process. Several recent studies show that omega-3 fats can reduce output of another stress hormone, epinephrine (aka adrenaline). Start taking 4000IU of fish oil twice daily. You cannot overdose on fish oil. The body will produce large amounts of free radicals, which will require large amounts of antioxidants to be controlled. Be certain that 100% of the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals is consumed.

In summary, modify the diet; learn what to eat and what not to eat; take a good quality multivitamin every day; get the glucose levels in tight control; manage the insulin levels; manage the sodium levels; exercise vigorously daily; manage stress; eliminate the possibility of parasite infestation; and consider fasting techniques. Learn as much as possible about diabetes, food, and how to cleanse and maintain all of the vital organs.

If this appears to be a lot of hard work, it is. But it is not unusual for diabetics, that have not had any dieting success at all, to lose 30 pounds the first month. What Has Changed in Health & Fitness Over the Last 30 Years?

There have been many changes in fitness over the past 30 years. It’s human nature to reminisce about times past. That’s great but lets not forget that things change as well. This is certainly true in the area of health and fitness. “If you do what you have always done, you will get the results you have always gotten” is true, but what if the situation changes? Then what used to work is no longer a viable and effect way to get the results that we want. In this article I will outline seven items that have changed over the past 30 or so years that affect the way we view health, fitness, exercise and what is considered “best”. Let’s look at some of these changes in Fitness.

1. Activity level

This change in fitness is pretty obvious. We just don’t move around as much as we used to 30 years ago.

Currently, the average sedentary person living in an urban setting takes 900-3000 steps a day. Uh… that’s a puny number! In the journal of sports medicine existing literature was pulled together to set a general guideline of what a good number of steps per day would be

The author Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke translated different physical activity into steps-per-day equivalents. A rate of fewer than 5,000 is classified as sedentary, 5,000 to 7,499 is low active, 7,500 to 9,999 is somewhat active 10,000 or more is active and 12,500 or more is very active. So what does 900 make us? Close to dead! But its not hard to imagine. Get up from, take elevator to car park, drive car, take elevator to office, sit down, order fast food, reverse the process to go home and go back to bed. Just to note, 1km is about 1300 steps.

Its gotten to the point where we have to purposely inconvenience ourselves to get our activity level up. Here are some suggestions (that actually show us how pathetic our average activity levels have become).

Park at the far end of the car park and walk to your building Instead of dropping the kids off in front of the school, park a couple of streets before it and walk them the rest of the way… 10,000 is actually considered a LOW estimate for children.

Go round the shopping centre or supermarket in a random. With today’s super malls, this is a big thing!

Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator (well if you work on the 50th floor, maybe climb halfway to start)

Give the dog an extra 5 minutes on his walk (we need it even more than him)

Stop emailing colleagues in the same office, instead go over and talk to them (shockingly effective considering how much email we send each day!… great for team building as well)

Go for a walk during your lunch break, walk to get your lunch or to find somewhere to eat your lunch

Get up and do something, run up and down the stairs for example during TV ads (no excuses here!)

Walk to the corner shop instead of driving or popping in on your way home

Walk to friends houses instead of driving

Take public transport and walk from the train station

Dr. David Bassett studied an Amish community to see what things were like in the past. These guys have no cars, no electricity and do hard manual labor to put food on the table. Its like time travel to the past. They eat 3 large meals a day with lots of meat, vegetables and natural starches like potatoes.

The 98 Amish adults Bassett surveyed wore pedometers for a week. The men averaged 18,000 steps a day. The women took an average of 14,000 steps.

The men spent about 10 hours a week doing heavy work like plowing, shoeing horses, tossing hay bales, and digging. The women spent about 3.5 hours a week at heavy chores. Men spent 55 hours a week in moderate activity; women reported 45 hours a week of moderate chores like gardening and doing laundry. Wow that’s a lot of manual labor. Get a pedometer (its only like 20 bucks) and see how you fare.

2. Fat Percentages and Obesity

Activity level leads us right on to this point about obesity. The scary obesity rate is one of the most obvious changes in fitness.

The obesity rate among the participants in the study of the Amish population was 4 percent, as determined by body mass index, or BMI. The current obesity rate among the urban populations is 30% or more. OK the obesity percentages are a scary thing because obesity is already in the “VERY high risk of a lot of bad ways to die” category. There is still the overweight category (obviously fat but not hitting the medically obese range) to consider. These people are at a high risk already!

The total percentages of overweight + obese are really wild… hitting close to 70% in some cities. Compare this to the average in the 1980s. 10-15% obesity in most cities. It rose to the mid 20% in 1995 and its now at an all time high.

3. Diet

OK linked to point no.2 is of course diet. This is another obvious change in fitness. Its very simple actually. We now eat more refined foods (white bread, sugar, rice, flour, noodles). In the body these give pretty much the same response – FAT storage. The only time we should eat these items is immediately after hard training. As we can tell from point no.1, not much of any training is going on. But lots of eating is!

We also eat less fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. We eat more snacks like chips and cookies (which are also refined despite what advertisers claim).

These changes in fitness are made more troubling because even natural foods today are not as good for us as they used to be. Current farming methods make vitamin and mineral content in fruits and vegetables drop about 10-40% depending on the mineral. Corn fed meats don’t give us as good an omega 6 to omega 3 ratio as we used to get from grass fed and free range animals. (that means not so many healthy fatty acids for us)

And of course, we are also simply consuming more calories. The Amish people in the study in point no.1 ate about 3600 calories/day for men and 2100 calories/day for women. Many sedentary people consume this much and more! How? Well a fully “featured” gourmet coffee from coffee bean or Starbucks can add up to 500 calories in an instant of caffeine folly.

That’s 2 hours of walking for an average sized lady.

Just remember, calorie quality counts as well. 2000 calories of vegetables, meat and healthy fats is infinitely better than 2000 calories from french fries. Its close to impossible to get fat on the first, and nearly impossible not to get fat with the second.

I like this car analogy. If you had a 2million dollar dream car, would you put low grade or high grade petrol into it? High grade of course! Then why do some people put low grade filth into their bodies which are so much more important than the car we drive?

4. Games children play

The average child who grows up in an urban environment is a motor-skill weakling. As a hobby, I coach youth basketball. In our talent scouting, I have kids do a very simple drill of dribbling in and out and around cones. There are so many kids who can’t do it and some who I think might fall down if asked to RUN around the cones without the ball! This is in contrast to the past where kids ran around, chased each other, played physical games and sports of all kinds, where the playground was the center of fun for young kids. This lack of activity not only causes a change in fitness for the child in his/her youth, but has a profound long term effect as well.

Of course this change in fitness is a result of a combination of possible factors.

Parents who only consider academic success to be worth striving for, who only give a child recognition and praise when they do well in academic subjects.

An education system who also values book knowledge above other things and takes away physical education classes to put more academic lessons in.

Poorly taught PE lessons that don’t help a child develop motor skills in the key early years Busy double-income families where fathers are not free to play with their children (or don’t care enough to… money isn’t everything dads)

The maddening computer game addiction situation where virtual life is more important than real life. I believe this is the reason for all the empty basketball courts in my neighbourhood. It used to be that teams lined up to play there. Now only people my age (late 20s to 30s) play. No young kids are there any more.

But actually, so what? The issue is that if kids stink at sport and physical activity, the well known psychological factor of “competence” comes is. Simply put, in general, we do what we are good at. If our next generation is poor at sport and physical activity, they are even less likely to do any of it! Which combined with items 1 to 3, make for a deadly health crisis for many countries. Obesity costs the UK 7.4 billion in national health care per year! If we don’t help our kids, that’s only going to grow to be a bigger and bigger burden for everybody.

5. Social Support

This is a more subtle change in fitness. People are communal animals. We stick with things because there is a supportive community behind us. Even drug and alcoholism rehab centers recognise this. We all need social support. But social links are getting weaker. And no, Friendster and MySpace links don’t make up for it.

In a more connected but less close world (I know so many people who are only comfortable behind a computer screen and not in front of a real person) there is less social support than in the past (extended families, communal living, strong friendships within a neighbourhood etc) and its hard to stick with something which requires dedication and sacrifice like an exercise program. I’m not a sociologist but I do believe there is a reason that exercise classes do better in terms of membership than individualized training. Most of them certainly are not as effective as great individual coaching. But the social factor does come in when sustaining a lifestyle change is involved.

6. Free Time

This subtle change in fitness is pretty clear. We just have less time that we “own”. Bosses, social, family and other commitments make free time a very precious commodity and it adds difficulty to the fact that time is our only non renewable resource. When we choose to exercise or spend time cooking to keep a healthy lifestyle, we are competing with movies, games, TV and other things for free time. We know that exercise is good for us, but it not only has to be good for us, it has to be BETTER in our minds than the latest episode of desperate housewives, or the latest computer game. That’s the issue. We need to prioritize long term health over temporary fun.

7. Training methods

OK here is where we are doing well. 30 years ago the aerobics craze took the western world by storm. Its not a very good training method both in terms of results, and in terms of results per unit of time. Add that to the fact that we have such minimal time to train, we can’t afford to train in a sub-optimal way. We know a lot more now. Fortunately for us, there are good methods that smart coaches use to improve training efficiency and get RESULTS even with less training time. Some of these include smartly designed resistance training programs, interval training and good assessment techniques to determine individual needs. If you have a coach like that in your corner, you can turn back the clock and avoid becoming one of the ever growing statistic of people who’s health is headed in the wrong direction. The standard orthodox cure for Angular Cheilitis is to apply a topical steroid cream or an anti fungal cream and it should kill the bacteria within a few couple of days. But as I have mentioned before there are home cures for Cheilitis which are very effective in clearing this condition.

Attention to diet:

There can be a few dietary causes of this condition. If the cause behind the Cheilitis is an yeast infection called Candida Albicans, then adhering to a strict diet which omits anything made with yeast, will clear the condition. By drinking lots of water you can keep the skin hydrated which helps the healing process. A vitamin B deficiency has also been found to be the cause in some cases of Angular Cheilitis.
