Incidents of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and even uterine cancer are on the rise. How can estrogen be dangerous? Don’t we all make estrogen? Yes, we all do-but what really matters is what happens to it once you make it as well as how much your cells and organs are exposed to it. Understanding Estrogen

Estrogens are the dominant hormones for most of a woman’s reproductive life. Starting at puberty, the ovaries produce estrogen until menopause. Estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) are considered “strong” estrogens; where as estriol (E3) (Pregnancy Estrogen) is a “weak” or “protective” estrogen. High levels of E1 and E2 are associated with increased breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer risk; whereas, E3 is associated with a decreased risk.

So what happens to estrogens in your body? The body treats estrogen as a toxin and tries to eliminate it. In the process of the liver trying to detoxify it, estrogen can be converted into some very dangerous metabolites, which research shows may be responsible for the damage to the DNA that can cause tumors and even cancer! Xenoestrogens are more easily converted down this carcinogenic pathway. These potent and damaging metabolites are also responsible for many of the hormone-related symptoms and conditions mentioned above: PMS, fibroids, etc. Pharmaceutical companies are trying to create drugs to block the action of these estrogens to prevent cancer and reduce estrogen-related symptoms, but the side-effects can often make things worse.

Estrogen Metabolites

Estrogen is broken down by enzymes in the liver and eventually excreted through the intestines by our stool. During the breakdown process, several metabolites are formed. C2 (good) estrogens are harmless. However, C16 (bad) and C4 (ugly) estrogen metabolites are harmful and carcinogenic. The C4 pathway is activated by pesticides, car exhaust, paint fumes, alcohol, caffeine, pharmaceuticals, sugar, a high fat diet and environmental estrogens such as

Xenoestrogens (usually petrochemicals) that have a very potent estrogen-like activity and can be considered very toxic. Sources of Xeno estrogens are commercial meats grown with hormones, pesticides, herbicides, plastic bottles, carpet fibers and Teflon coated cooking utensils.

Phytoestrogens – refers to plant compounds and botanical products that have estrogen-like activity. Plants rich in phytoestrogens include soy and red clover

Synthetic estrogens are those produced by pharmaceutical companies and have their molecular structure altered so they can be patented. Like the xenoestrogens, they tend to be more potent than the body’s own estrogens and more toxic.Examples are birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy drugs.

While this all sounds like bad news, the good news is that once the C4 estrogens are made, they can be inactivated in the liver. However if the liver is not functioning optimally then this won’t happen.

Certain vegetables, the cruciferous family (cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and kale), contain anti estrogenic compounds known as I3C (Indole-3-Carbinol) that decreases the production of C4 and C16 metabolites unfortunately these compounds are not absorbed in the human gut without being first broken down.

They are broken down into another compound known as DIM (Di-indol-ylmethane). This is only possible if the digestive system is working optimally.

This phytochemical is also sensitive to heat, so these foods should be eaten raw or lightly steamed to get their beneficial effect. Boiling the vegetables destroys around 40% of the nutrients, microwaving destroys 97% of these powerful ant-estrogen compounds.

5 Key Tips to Help Spoon Feed Your Elder With Dignity

As folks move into their later years, one of the last things they are generally able to perform is the task of feeding themselves. Once they are no longer able to perform this task, it’s incumbent on your or the person proving their care to make the feeding process as dignified as possible. If you perform this task in a demeaning way, your elder is likely to run into issues with self esteem, retain a poor self image and eventually could fall into a depressed state. Be respectful of your elder when feeding them – doing so will help make their remaining time much more enjoyable.

Here are five tips you may find helpful when dealing with feeding your elder:

1. Test food temperature by putting a drop inside of your wrist

As you are doing this, ask your elder how they like the temperature of their food. If they say hot, clearly you aren’t going to give them food that will scald their mouth, but be sure they are part of the process when determining the temperature of the food you are serving them.

2. Don’t make the assumption the entire meal has to be spoon fed

If your elder asks for a spoon or fork, but all means give it to them and let them try to feed themselves. If they can’t use reassuring words and praise them for their attempt.

3. Mix up the food you are feeding your elder

Mix up the meal – make it interesting. For example, give them a bite of steak, then a bit of vegetables, then maybe a bite of desert to keep things interesting. Also – vary the use of utensils. Don’t always use a spoon as this may appear like you are treating your elder like a baby. But in both cases, ask your elder first – give them the opportunity to make the decision.

4. Offer liquids often

This is important so that food will go down more easily. Also – be sure to check your elder’s mouth after the meal to ensure that all the food has been swallowed. If there is any food remaining, be sure to have them spit it out or swallow it. Failure to do so could be aspirated later on, which could end up with serious consequences.

5. Don’t beg your elder to eat

Never, ever force your elder to eat. If they don’t want to eat, try again later. Never treat them like a baby or tell them they will get sick if they don’t eat, or tell them that if they want you to be happy, they will eat their food as you’ve asked. Remember, dignity.

Always be sure to keep your elder in an upright position for at least 30 minutes after meal time to prevent aspiration pneumonia.

Asthma is a disorder of the respiratory system in which the passages that enable air to pass into and out of the lungs narrow, causing wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath due to a restriction of air intake. More than 17 million Americans suffer from asthma and it occurs equally in males and females and in all ethnic and socio-economic groups. The prevalence of asthma increased more than 60% in Americans between 1982 and 1994. Scientists suspect that the sharp increase was due to more exposure to second-hand smoke, growing populations in polluted city centers and new housing that was poorly ventilated.

Asthma attacks occur when the bronchi and bronchioles become inflamed, usually by contact with a triggering irritant such as pet hair or cigarette smoke. This reduces the space through which air can travel through the lungs, causing the lungs to work harder to move air in and out. The attack usually begins with mild chest pressure and a dry cough and, as the attack intensifies, wheezing develops and breathing becomes difficult with the cough producing a stringy mucous. Since the airway inflammation prevents some of the oxygen-rich air from reaching the alveoli, the cells of the body start to burn oxygen at a higher rate, which actually increases the body’s demand for oxygen.

Inflammation of the airway occurs when an irritant comes into contact with the airway walls. The body’s immune system detects the irritant as foreign and releases an immunoglobulin of the IgE class that can attach to the irritant. This triggers the release of specialized white blood cells, known as mast cells that head for the site of irritation. When they get there, the mast cells release histamine, a chemical substance that causes swelling and redness as part of an inflammatory response. This causes the muscles lining the airway to contract even more, narrowing the passage further. The cells that line the airway overreact to the inflammatory response and secrete a lot of mucous, which clogs the bronchioles and causes the wheezing.

The most common causes of asthma attacks are extremely small and lightweight particles that are transported through the air and inhaled into the lungs. For many people, the environmental triggers are allergens like plant pollen, mold spores, animal dander and fecal material from dust mites and cockroaches. The triggers can also be physiological, like exercise and infections such as the common cold. Alternatively, attacks may be brought on by substances found in food, such as the sulfites used to preserve beer and wine, and in medications like aspirin and ibuprofen.

Sinus problems are likely linked closely to a person who may suffer from asthma. The paranasal sinuses are air-filled, mucous-lined cavities in the head and cheekbones and in the frontal bone just above and between the eye sockets. The sinuses all drain into the nasal cavity. The sinuses are often infected with bacteria, causing inflammation and severe pain. Environmental and chemical irritants, as well as most allergens, can similarly cause a mild to severe inflammatory response in the sinuses. In all cases, the inflammation results in overproduction of mucous by cells lining the cavities. Repeated attacks often lead to a thickening of the mucous membranes and, sometimes, scarification requiring surgical intervention, which frequently provides only temporary relief.

So what can be done about all of this? The answer is routine dietary supplementation with a high quality bovine colostrum and here is why.

First, allergic reactions and asthma are manifestations of an immune system that is out of control. The problem is that at about age 13, the body’s health support mechanisms began to deteriorate. Before puberty, when you were just a young child, the very foundation of your immune system was being established by a small gland-like structure in the upper chest, the thymus. It is within this structure that the cells mature that will determine the appropriate type of response that your immune system should mount after an insult and then cells from the same source will regulate the quality and intensity of that response. Cells from this gland also scan the blood for abnormal cells and remove them. After puberty, the thymus begins to shrink and ultimately almost disappears by age 50-60. Scientific studies have shown that insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), a major component of high quality bovine colostrum, and the IGF superfamily of proteins can restore and maintain a fully functional thymus, even in adults. In addition, colostrum contains the alpha and beta chains of the hormone thymosin that act independently and in concert to regulate the functions of the thymus. Further, the proline-rich peptide (PRP), also known as thymulin, in colostrum is known to down-regulate the immune system and keep the response to a foreign substance under control. Other studies have shown that including only small amounts of colostrum in the daily diet of adult animals significantly enhances the ability of their white blood cells to respond to infection and destroy invading bacteria and viruses.

Are You Suffering From LaryngoPharyngeal Reflux Or LPR?

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux or LPR is a little known but common disorder that can cause major problems if left untreated. LPR is caused by the backflow of stomach acids and food particles up through the esophagus all the way to the voice box or larynx/pharynx. LPR may not be associated with eating and can occur at any time of day or night. If you suffer from acid reflux heartburn it does not mean that you are subject to LPR. The difference being the extent of the reflux travels in the esophagus. Acid reflux heartburn in most cases only affects the lower portion of the esophagus.

It is an interesting fact that many people who do suffer from Laryngopharyngeal Reflux may not even suffer from the effects of heartburn at all. The reason for this is that the refluxed material does not stay in the esophagus long enough to cause the pain and symptoms of classic acid reflux. A major portion of the acid reflux ends up in the throat where due to its sensitive nature extensive damage can occur.  

The symptoms of LPR include chronic hoarseness, throat clearing and coughing. Many people also describe the feeling of a constant lump or obstruction in their throat. In addition you may also have the classic symptoms of acid reflux heartburn as well. Another symptom comes in the form of chronic nasal drainage into the throat which causes a cough or constant throat clearing. If you have these symptoms then you should contact an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctor also called an Otolaryngologist. Ignoring these symptoms especially if you are a smoker can lead to a serious medical condition.  

The doctor will conduct an exam and may require some additional tests to determine if you indeed have LPR. The two most common tests used to diagnose LPR include a Barium swallow and a 24 hour esophageal PH test. You may find that your ENT will schedule you for both tests since the result provide different information. The Barium swallow is normally done as an outpatient procedure at the local hospital. Basically you will be required to swallow a chalky solution while standing in front of an x-ray machine. This test will tell the doctor how you are swallowing and if there is any abnormality in throat area.  

The second test is called a Ph-metry test and it basically will monitor the Ph levels in your esophagus over a 24 hour period. The test is begun in either the doctor’s office or the local hospital. Many people find the testing procedure either annoying or uncomfortable but it is critical for a proper diagnosis of LPR. The test is begun by inserting a small soft inflatable tube into your nose and down in to the esophagus. Once inserted it is attached to a belt held computer that is worn around your waist. You will be required to wear these devices for a 24 hour period.  

Once the doctor has reviewed the data and made his or her diagnosis you will be given a number of treatment options. In almost all case it will require a lifestyle changes in order to be effective. This especially true if you are a smoker continuing to smoke while suffering from laryngopharyngeal reflux disorder can in many cases lead to serious consequences including cancer of the throat. Many people will be asked to change their diet and add exercise to their daily routine. Specific medications may be prescribed to temporarily reduce stomach acid until the lifestyle changes are completed. In rare cases surgery to repair the lower sphincter muscle or LES may be necessary to prevent acid reflux heartburn and LPR.  

As stated before ignoring LPR can lead to serious problems. These include noisy breathing, choking episodes, breathing problems like asthma or bronchitis as well as cancer of the esophagus, voice box and throat.

Simple Neck Exercises – For Poor Posture and Poking Chin

Poor upper neck posture is almost universal as we spend much of our lives sitting in one way or another, to rest, to drive, to work, to operate computers and to watch television. Because many of us sit with a poor low back posture, with our lumbar spines slumped into flexion, this rounds the thoracic spine and brings the head forward so we are looking down. Due to the fact that we want our heads to be looking forward mostly and not down, we tip our faces up and put our necks into extension. This results in the typical poor sitting posture of rounded upper thorax, rounded shoulders, poking chin and neck extended.

Maintaining the typical poor neck posture for a long period, perhaps even over years at work or when resting, causes changes in the tissues around the area which adapt to the new posture and tighten in some areas whilst stretching in others. As the problem worsens the neck and upper thorax tolerate less and less being taken out of their usual poor position and the posture becomes fixed with reduction in ranges of movement, pain and discomfort. Gradually this will limit the ability to use a computer or sit watching the television and start to impinge on the person’s life. Physiotherapy assessment will pick all these factors up and form a plan to reverse the changes which have occurred.

Postural correction is a simple but important start point for this process as correcting the poor lumbar slump will automatically improve the posture of the thorax, shoulders and neck. This correction will need to be maintained and re-corrected constantly until your body gets used to the fact that the new posture is the normal one. Your physio may give you exercises to mobilise the upper thorax and shoulders and is likely to teach you cervical retraction, an exercise which is difficult for some to get the hang of.

Cervical retraction, or chicken shift or chin tuck or double chin exercise, is done by keeping the face forward as normal and tucking the whole head in towards the rear. Your chin should not go up or down and this exercise forces all the neck joints towards the ends of their movement, a position they have not seen for a while if poor posture is you problem. Slow repetition of this exercise restores a more normal potential posture for the upper neck and mobilises all the neck facet joints.

Migraine Headache Symptoms and Causes – What Are They?

When describing migraine symptoms and causes, it first helps to understand what is a migraine. A migraine is not just an ordinary headache, as those who suffer from it will know only too well. A migraine headache can be severe and persistent and is accompanied by a wide range of other symptoms.

• Artery Constriction

Migraines are the result of a constriction of the arteries in the brain, which reduces blood flow to the brain. This is followed by dilation or widening of these arteries. Hence the often unique throbbing sensation experienced with a migraine headache.

• Symptoms Can Vary

Migraine symptoms vary greatly from one person to another. About one in every five migraine sufferers will have what is called a classical migraine. Associated with a classical migraine is a visual disturbance known as an aura. This is flashing light in front of the eye preceding a migraine. This can be in conjunction with pins and needles and an altered sense of smell and taste.

Most patients commonly see zigzag patterns of brightly colored lights flashing or even a blind spot in the form of a hole, usually in one eye only. This aura can last from about 10 to 30 minutes. This is usually followed by the headache, but not always as some migraine sufferers only experience the aura. This is known as an ocular migraine.

In most cases the main migraine symptom is a moderate to severe headache. This is usually confined to one side of the head and can alternate from one side to the other. It is often a throbbing or pulsating headache and will get worse with physical activity. Often there is pain behind the eyes, which can be relieved with pain killers or a cold compress.

Women vs. Men

Women are more likely to suffer from migraines than men. This is because of regular hormonal changes. Women can get migraines just before or after their menstrual period.

More Symptoms

As well as migraine symptoms of the head, a migraine sufferer may experience a variety of other symptoms. These include:

• the feeling of nausea,

• vomiting,

• diarrhea

• very cold hands and feet.

• If the patient is having a visual disturbance, feelings of dizziness and disorientation can occur.

One very disturbing migraine symptom is that of temporary paralysis on one side of the body. This is known as a hemipleic migraine and can be very frightening if experienced for the first time. As this can mimic the signs of a stroke it is always important to have these sort of migraine symptoms checked out by your doctor to confirm that it is a migraine.

• Light and Sound Sensitivity

Migraine sufferers are generally very sensitive to light and sound during an attack. This is why it is well known that to lessen the effects and aid recovery, being in a darkened, quiet room is very beneficial.

For some people the early warning signs that a migraine is imminent can be easily missed. Migraine symptoms can occur well in advance of an attack. Feelings of elation or intense energy, cravings for sweets, thirst, drowsiness, irritability or depression, are all early warning migraine symptoms.

Diabetes has almost become an epidemic in today’s world. Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Whatever sugar we take is generally broken down into simple sugar called ‘glucose’ in our body.

This glucose circulates within the blood and enter into the cells with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, made within the Beta-cells of Pancreas. Due to sedentary life style and genetic predisposition, the beta cells are not able to make enough insulin, which is a key for glucose to enter into the cells. This is called Diabetes.

There are two main types. Type I & Type II .

There are two main types of full-blown diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are completely unable to produce insulin.

People with Type 2 diabetes can produce insulin, but their cells have become resistant to it. In either case, the glucose can’t move into the cells and blood glucose levels can become high. When these levels remain high for long time, they can cause serious complications.

Pre-Diabetes:

Pre-diabetes is a condition in which the cells in your body are becoming resistant to insulin or your pancreas is not producing as much insulin as required. Your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. This is also known as “impaired fasting glucose” or “impaired glucose tolerance”. Every individual who has a Diabetic father or mother must go for glucose tolerance test or GTT. This can help in diagnosing pre-diabetic condition. A diagnosis of pre-diabetes is a warning sign that diabetes will develop later.

You can prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes by losing weight, making changes in your diet and exercising.

Type 1 Diabetes

In case of Type I (Insulin Dependent Diabetes) the person can’t make any insulin. Type 1 most often occurs before age 30, but may strike at any age. This is typically caused by genetic disorder. The pancreas produces very little or no insulin anymore. Frequent insulin injections are needed for Type 1. However there are certain herbs like Salacia oblonga and Pterocarpus marsupium which are found to be useful even in Type I diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

People suffering from Type II diabetes are having enough insulin but the cells have become resistant to it. This type of Diabetes has become very common and is spreading like an epidemic everywhere around the world. The most important reason for the cells to become resistant to insulin is sedentary life style which is being followed by modern age people.

95 percent of all diabetes cases are Type 2. What can be the reason? It’s a lifestyle disease, triggered by obesity, a lack of exercise, increased age and to some degree, genetic predisposition.

So the only way to prevent diabetes is to change the life style, which is the basic theory of Ayurveda to fight any disease. According to Ayurveda, Stress and life style is the reason for most of the illnesses including Type II diabetes.

Factors for developing Type II diabetes and herbs for them

As we know that there is no problem with the insulin production. It is there in the body in enough quantity, but the only problem is that it is not able to open the cells to make the glucose enter into them. All the glucose keep circulating within the blood. The cells become resistant to insulin. The reasons for Insulin resistance are –

1. Obesity

The number one risk factor for Type 2 diabetes is obesity. Nearly 40 % of the patients suffering from Type II diabetes are obese.

Excessive fat interferes with body’s ability to use insulin properly. According to Ayurveda this is called ” Stroto-avarodh” i.e. blocked channels. This blockage in the channels of passage of Insulin is reason for greater insulin resistance.

Food and life style which cause blockage in the channels or ” Stroto-avarodh ” are curd, banana, heavy greasy diet, overeating, excess daytime sleep.

There are herbs which are useful in clearing the blockages and opening up the micro channels. These remove excessive fat from within the body. Herbs like Katuki (Picrorrhiza kurro), Vidang (Embelia ribes), Amalvetas (Garcinia cambogia), Triphala are useful in Type II diabetes because they open up the channels and helps in reducing the insulin resistance.

2. Sedentary Lifestyle

According to Charaka- an ancient Ayurvedic healer, lifestyle is damaging to health and bears responsibility for the growing obesity and diabetes. Inactivity and being overweight go hand in hand towards a diagnosis of Type 2. Muscle cells have more insulin receptors than fat cells, so a person can decrease insulin resistance by exercising. Sushruta another ancient Ayurveda surgeon explains by giving an analogy that who suffers from diabetes should walk at least 100 kilometers a day to keep his sugar level under control.

This indicates that one must walking and being more active also lowers blood sugar levels by helping insulin to be more effective.

3. Unhealthy Eating Habits

90% of people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. Unhealthy eating contributes largely to obesity. Too much fat, not enough fiber, and too many simple carbohydrates all contribute to a diagnosis of diabetes. Eating right is can turn the diagnosis around and reverse or prevent Type 2.

4. Family History and Genetics

It appears that people who have family members who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk for developing it themselves. Indians have a higher than normal rate of Type 2 diabetes. Having a genetic disposition towards Type 2 is not a guarantee of a diagnosis. Lifestyle plays an important part in determining who gets diabetes. So it can be prevented if we go for changed life style to avoid diabetes.

5. Increased Age

It’s a very sad but true fact. The older we get, the risk of Type 2 diabetes is increased. Even if an elderly person is thin, he/she still may be predisposed to getting diabetes. As we age, the pancreas ages right along with us. It doesn’t make enough insulin it did when we were younger. Also, as our cells age, they become more resistant to insulin as well.

6. Stress, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol

The hormones are under the control of our thought and our attitude towards events in life. The stress hormone immediately releases pool of glucose, corticosteroid hormones in our blood. There is immediate release of adrenal hormones, causing blood pressure and constriction of arteries.

Not only do they damage your heart vessels but they are two key components in Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms including obesity, a high fat diet, and lack of exercise. Having metabolic syndrome increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Oprah and Eckhart Tolle author of A New Earth answered a caller’s question from Beijing, China concerning weight loss and bodily transformation.

Cathy from Beijing had lost 30 pounds in the last year and acknowledged that for her it was a “spiritual work” beyond that of weight loss. Upon trying to explain it to her friends, Cathy found it difficult to adequately articulate the spiritual process without her friends looking at her as if she was “mentally ill” or weird.

Oprah commented: “A friend and I were talking about this the other day about allowing yourself to be fed from the energy that’s already there inside your body. I know what you’re talking about.”

Jesus Himself had a situation in which His disciples were hungry and brought Jesus meat saying, “Master, eat.” But Jesus said to them, “I have meat to eat that you don’t know of.” The disciples being perplexed said to one another, “Has anyone given Him something to eat?” Jesus hearing them responded, “My meat is to do the will of the Father who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:31-34).

Undoubtedly once your spirit has been awakened by God and is connected to the Creator, the “quickening spirit” within will energize your mortal body (John 6:63). It was in fact the Holy Spirit that rose Christ from the dead and imparts life to our physical bodies (Romans 8:11).

Hence the discussion between Oprah, Cathy, and Eckhart was very insightful concerning feeding off the energy within before prematurely and excessively eating.

Undoubtedly there is nourishment within from our own spirit that many rarely tap into being overly consumed and preoccupied with the body and egoic mind.

When we however cultivate the spiritual energy within to feed the body, we can thereby overcome obesity, and prevent overeating. As we develop increased consciousness, we will both hear from and harness our bodies more easily prior to over indulging.

Eckhart wisely said: “Being in touch with the body helps greatly because the body knows what it needs. Overeating happens because it is part of the ego’s unconsciousness, which seeks to substitute for the sense of aliveness.”

Oprah agreed wholeheartedly with Eckhart on that point being experientially sure of that in her own life. Cathy too agreed.

Before ever being known by the flesh, Christ was called a “child of the Holy Spirit” by which He was conceived of the virgin Mary (see Matthew 1:18).

Considering human beings are also triune in nature – meaning we are spirit, possess a mind, and live in a body – how much more nourished we would be both inwardly and outwardly, if we could simply reconnect with divine spiritual life. Inner life is far more nourishing and satisfying than external substitutes that enlarge our bodies but leave us empty inside.

Itchy Penis Causes That Are Contagious

An itchy penis is one of the more private health concerns a man can have. But when is it cause for public concern – that is, when is the source of the itch contagious? Often, an itchy penis is a sign of improper hygiene and is the sole concern of the man affected. However, certain causes of penile itch can be spread either through skin-to-skin contact or through contact with clothing, towels and so on.
