Dog Not Urinating? – 5 Reasons Why This is Happening

Are you worried because you noticed that your dog is straining to urinate or not urinating at all? You need to consider a dog not urinating as a very serious symptom that needs to be addressed immediately. If left untreated, it could be fatal. Take your dog to the vet to find out what could be the cause of the problem. Chances are your vet will diagnose one of these 5 possible causes of your dog’s urinary problems.

Do you have an unneutered male dog? When it comes to an old dog, difficulty urinating could be due to prostate problems. As unneutered male dogs age, their prostate gland gets larger. The prostate gland wraps around the urethra and it starts to press against the urethra and slows or stops urine flow. A prostate gland infection may also be the cause since infections cause the gland to swell.

Urinary stones may be the cause of your dog not urinating because they block the flow of urine. Urinary stones are more common in males because their urethras are narrower. Some urinary stones form if your dog is not getting enough water to drink so make sure your dog’s water bowl is always full of fresh, filtered water.

Urinary stones are made of magnesium so give your dog raw, unprocessed food that is low in magnesium to prevent stones from forming. Also give your dog a homeopathic remedy to prevent urinary stones. Homeopathic remedies maintain a healthy bladder, urinary tract, and urine flow.

In a young or old dog difficulty urinating could be caused by a canine urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections can cause spasms in the urethra, narrowing the opening and making it harder for urine to pass through. To prevent and treat urinary tract infections, give your dog a homeopathic remedy. Homeopathic remedies can kill bacteria gently and naturally so you don’t have to worry about any side effects.

A tumor in the urinary tract may be the cause of your dog not urinating but this is a rare problem. Your vet will do the necessary examinations and tests to determine if a tumor is the cause of your dog’s symptoms.

Sometimes in an old dog difficulty urinating could be a sign of weakened bladder muscles. Weakened bladder muscles can make it hard for an old dog to empty his bladder.

5 Causes Of A Dog Not Urinating

  1. Unnuetered male dog with prostate problems;
  2. Urinary stones;
  3. Canine urinary tract infection;
  4. Tumor in the urinary tract;
  5. Weakened bladder muscles

There you have it, 5 reasons for the underlying causes of your dog not urinating. In order to pinpoint the cause, you need to take your dog to the vet to get some tests. Your vet will decide on a treatment plan but if you want to avoid giving your dog drugs, you should talk to your vet about using a natural, homeopathic remedy.

Homeopathic remedies are 100% safe and gentle. Even if you do decide on a conventional treatment method, a homeopathic remedy can help your dog achieve permanent recovery and healing. Unlike antibiotics and steroids, homeopathic remedies are safe to give on a continuing basis to strengthen your dog’s urinary tract system and stop the cause of your dog not urinating.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine Can Help Treat Dry Eye

Dry eye symptoms arise when your cornea is inadequately lubricated. The disorder comes about because of insufficient tear volume or substandard quality of the tears, which leads to too rapid evaporation or rapid destruction of the tear film.

The tear film normally has three constituents: an outer layer of lipids secreted by the meibomian glands; an aqueous (water) middle layer produced by the lacrimal glands; and a mucous inner layer. A malfunction in any of these layers can lead to dry eye syndrome.

You may also experience dry eye symptoms if you unknowingly suffer from diseases such as eyelid inflammation (called blepharitis), Sjögren’s syndrome which causes dry eyes and dry mouth, and others.

N-Acetyl-cysteine (NAC)

The usefulness of N-acetyl-cysteine lies primarily in the fact that, an amino acid that contains sulphur. The sulphur component in cysteine gives it unique, highly versatile binding and structural capabilities in the body. example, your body needs cysteine to produce taurine, a valuable amino acid, and the powerful antioxidant glutathione.

Glutathione is made from the sulphur-bearing amino acid cysteine and two other amino acids. Diverse body functions benefit from the presence of glutathione. This potent antioxidant helps body cells recover after a stroke, protects against cancer, prevents sharp fluctuations in blood sugar, and protects arterial walls from damage.

Because it is the most easily absorbed form of cysteine, NAC has become the most common source of cysteine for therapeutic purposes. NAC can be found in animal proteins (fish, eggs, dairy, meat, and poultry) and some vegetable proteins (e.g. soybeans).

You are more vulnerable to disease and other ailments when glutathione levels in your blood are depleted. To enable higher glutathione production by the liver, you need to increase intake of NAC. NAC is a necessary ingredient for making reduced glutathione (GSH), the most useful, un-oxidised form of glutathione.

Because it leads to the increased production of glutathione, NAC helps prevent eye damage from oxidation and its associated toxic materials. Your eye uses glutathione as its principal antioxidant, and whilst, its highest concentration (aside from the liver, where it is produced) is in the eyes. Many research studies have directly linked low levels of glutathione with all types of eye diseases, so it is important to maintain normal glutathione levels to promote eye health.

As a drug, NAC is used to remove clumps of mucous in the body, such as in the lungs of patients with chronic emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and pneumonia. As an antioxidant, NAC prevents lipids from being oxidised, which helps dissolve coagulations of mucous.

Its mucous-dissolving properties, makes NAC a powerful agent for treating problems associated with lipid oxidation in the eyes. Several studies have shown that treatment with NAC is able to produce better results than artificial tears in relieving the symptoms experienced by people with blepharitis. Trial doses involving 100mg of NAC taken three times daily improved the constitution of the tear film, reducing the symptoms of blepharitis.

Many research monographs have pointed to the beneficial effects of NAC on Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease which also affects the eyes. NAC’s fast-acting ability to thin out mucosal secretions unblocks the cellular channels, allowing moisture to flow more freely. In several trials on people diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, researchers found the associated dry eye symptoms improved with thrice-a-day doses of 200mg of NAC.

Top 10 Tips and Advice for Easing Pregnancy for Scoliosis Sufferers

Back pain during pregnancy is not a new concept, but for people who suffer from scoliosis require a second thought to be given before, they plan to go through the process of pregnancy. Scoliosis is the disease of the spine in which the posture of the spine is deviated to form S or C shaped curvature, which can turn to be quite painful during pregnancy. However, this is not a reason that why you should postpone your pregnancy, as you can still go through pregnancy by using proper pain management techniques.

Back pain during pregnancy is a normal phenomenon that requires no fear. All the discomforts that you will be facing during pregnancy are because of the pressure that your little one inside your tummy is going to cause. Moreover, if you are a scoliosis patient then the chances of increased back pain is higher than what you would normally expect leaving you with a question of whether the back pain is owing to scoliosis or pregnancy. On the other hand, you will find pregnancy stabilizes scoliosis because of the transition that your body will be going through as a result of the hormonal fluctuations. If only you can follow these top ten tips to manage your back pain during pregnancy, and care should be taken with your scoliosis prescription, which may occasionally cause birth defects.

However, the discussion on back pain management tips will help to alleviate the problem of scoliosis. But before that there are three types of back pain – acute if the back pain does not last longer than three months, recurrent if the back pain occurs repeatedly and chronic back pain, which lasts longer than three months.

The kind of back pain that you will be facing during pregnancy and scoliosis is low back pain, which is found to occur in three different locations. Lumbar pain that may or may not spread down to your legs, sacroiliac pain occurs in the distal and lateral regions of the spine and nocturnal pain are the ones that occurs in the lumbar regions only during night. As mentioned elsewhere, the culprit for the pain could not be abruptly blamed on scoliosis or pregnancy for the possibility could be due to both of them.

1. Practice good posture:

You will find that the center of gravity shifts with the development of your baby and may force you to fall forwards. This could cause a strain on your spine with scoliosis increasing the curvature and the pain. There are some simple things that you can do to help you to alleviate the symptoms of back pain like:

• Stand up straight and tall

• Hold your chest high

• Keep your shoulders relaxed and at the back, do not lean forward.

• Stop locking your knees.

• Sit on a chair that will support your back or use a pillow.

2. Wear the correct clothes and accessories:

What you wear also matters while you are pregnant and is a victim of scoliosis. Some of the clothes that can help you in alleviating the back pain during pregnancy when you are a scoliosis sufferer are the use of maternity pants and supportive waistbands. This is also advisable to wear low-heeled flat shoes to remove the strain that high-heeled shoes can cause on both your spine, back and neck.

3. Lift properly:

Whether you have scoliosis or not you are always asked to lift objects as per the size and weight of the objects in a proper manner to prevent not only back pain, but also to be gentle on your delicate spine. And if you have scoliosis, and on top of that if you are pregnant, see that you lift objects appropriately, for example, lift heavy objects by sitting to the level of the object and then stand up slowly and steadily. If you did ask what to do, I will ask for a second or a third hand too!

4. Sleep properly:

The good thing while you sleep is to have a deep sleep but conscious by developing the habit of sleeping on one side. The doctor will advise you which side to sleep depending on the posture of the baby. This is also advisable to keep your knees bent while you sleep, and place pillows between them (there is no point in giving heed to cultural taboos, just ignore them even if you are hurt), and use another pillow under the abdomen to bear the whole weight and/or use a full length pillow.

5. Try heat or cold or massage therapy:

I will strongly recommend this to anyone suffering from pain for this helped me when I was suffering from severe neck pain. A good hot mat under the area of pain relieves not only the pain but also the fear of catching cold when you use a cold mat. In contrast, the cold massage therapies are also equivalently good and choose the one that works the best for you. Alternatively, you could also ask someone to massage a balm or pain relieving ointments, but only after consult a doctor, for the doctor may suggest a professional massage therapy if required. Listen to your gynecologist and chiropractic, and see that you link both of them.

6. Follow a gentle exercise regime:

These days people become pregnant in their thirties and forties, that they get pregnant pass through their age and are therefore vital that you regularly check with your gynecologist. Besides, if you are suffering from scoliosis, the chances of the back pain becoming severe are higher, despite the established fact that there is no relationship between scoliosis and pregnancy. This is good that you take advice of your gynec to schedule some gentle exercise, which not only helps in making delivery much easier, but might also have a positive effect on your scoliosis condition, alleviating the curvature. Some of the gentle exercises recommended are walking and/or swimming, lower back stretching exercise and other stretching exercises as recommended by the physician.

7. Alternative therapies:

The option of choosing an alternative therapy has to be done only after consulting your chiropractic and gynec. One of the main alternative therapies that have been believed to be of some use in relieving pain is acupuncture therapy. This therapy involves the use of needles to prick at energy points, which in turn somehow happens to activate the natural pain relief system. You will be expecting to be pricked with needles, which will have the pain of a pinprick, and may or may not require several visits to get complete relief from the pain, at least until you deliver the baby to the outside world. Sounds awful, but many who have undergone this therapy recommend and prefer this better than medicines that might have side effects.

8. Yoga:

Prenatal yoga has been described and prescribed by many as one of the best way to tone parts of the body that will be affected by performing yoga. They have found out that the position that is attained during the yoga practice promotes the relaxation of back muscles and relieves the strain of carrying the little one in its bag.

9. Chiropractic care:

The chiropractor could be of immense help, especially if you are already aware of your condition, scoliosis, then this will do good for you to discuss frankly with your physician about your idea of having a baby. This is also best to go to the gynecologist directed by him/her, who will understand the treatment being given and will be helping in giving you a holistic approach to handle the back pain efficiently. While the chiropractor will help in relieving the stress on the nerves, which adds to the already existing woes of scoliosis, and since he knows you before the pregnancy, during the pregnancy and after the pregnancy, stick on to the same chiropractor.

10. A Balanced Nutrition and a Holistic approach:

Whatever you do there is nothing like being healed naturally by boosting your body’s immune system and recuperative power. This is the procedure that has been described in detail by a chiropractor, Dr. Kevin Lau, who overcame scoliosis following a strict and disciplined diet based on his body metabolic requirements. However, when this comes to pregnancy, he has been using the same holistic approach of combining the western medicine and the traditional treatment methods of scoliosis with simple pregnancy exercises and appropriate food, which you will be able to formulate only by frankly discussing with your doctor.

Now is that you have ten important and best tips that anyone else can give you to relieve your back pain. As you would have noticed all these tips only tell you what you can do and where you can find some relief from your back pain. Try some of the simple tips like heat or cold pad to relieve the back pain initially, and if these does not help you, never ever venture into something new without consulting your doctor.

Natural Health – Healing Shingles With Essential Oils

One of my famous personal essential oil testimonies is how I got rid of my shingles using ravensara essential oil.

Shingles, aka Herpes Zoster, is a severe and short lived viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox.

It’s an infection of the nervous system that affects certain areas of the skin.

Shingles originates from having chicken pox as a child.

During a childhood bout of chicken pox, not all of the viral organisms are destroyed. They hang out and stay quiet – “dormant” – in the nerves in the skin for many years.

When there is severe emotional stress, severe illness, or things that severely affect the immune system, these “dormant” critters wake up and get active again, and cause an infection.

The pain is severe and sometimes long lived, and the medical approach is anti-viral medications, steroids, pain meds, and antibiotics for potential skin infection

– and not everyone wants to take this approach (although if the outbreak is near the eyes you should definitely seek medical attention!)

So once again we say Thank God for the oils!

I had a shingles outbreak a few years ago when my mother, who had been diagnosed with kidney cancer, had surgery to have her kidney removed.

I was so stressed out that I wasn’t paying attention to my body. It’s interesting how that happens, isn’t it?

Our bodies have to tell us the degree of how much stress we are under if we’re not paying attention.

When I found out I had shingles I ran to my two favorite resource books – the Essential Desk Reference and The Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide by the Burton Goldberg Group.

Both of these books mentioned ravensara – which I had in my oil collection and loved for sinus issues.

I immediately took some internally (I had taken ravensara internally before for bronchitis so I was comfortable taking it internally again).

I put 7 drops in an empty gel cap and I took one capsule in the morning and one at night. Within one day my pain and symptoms went away.

I decided to keep myself on this regime for 21 days because that is the normal life span of a virus. My symptoms stayed away for the whole time except for one day I did forget to take my dose.

I said to myself “oh, I probably don’t have shingles – I don’t have symptoms so I’ll stop taking the capsules.” Well, within one day the symptoms came back, so I resumed to completion.

Now not everyone will feel comfortable taking oils internally, so here are ways you can use essential oils topically for the discomfort of shingles:

Blend together:

— 10 drops sandalwood

— 5 drops blue cypress

— 4 drops peppermint

— 2 drops ravensara

Dilute 50:50 with massage oil and apply 6 – 10 drops on the affected area, back of neck, and down the spine 1 – 3 times daily. (from Essential Desk Reference)

____

A case study was done of six hospice patients with shingles. It was found that three essential oils combined together and placed in distilled water and used as a spritz improved the symptoms of the shingles.

The three oils used were:

–ravensara

–bergamot

–niaouli

Aromatherapist Noel Gilligan ran this study. Mr Gilligan reported that after 48 hours:

–there was a significant reduction in the pain from the shingles

–scabbing and healing of the pustules took place and in one

instance there was a disappearance of the pustules

Is Donald Trump the Best Politician on Earth?

The media is full of vitriol for Donald Trump.

Even amongst those political commentators who normally incline towards right-wing views, he’s a figure often discussed in terms closer to naked hatred than objective political analysis.

Yet what is Trump really saying? Is he being misrepresented in the press when portrayed as speaking solely for ‘the lunatic fringe’? Does he actually represent mainstream America rather more than his opponents would like to suggest?

The Pressures in US Society

All societies have stresses and tensions within them – and the US is no exception.

Since the 1960s, US society has changed out of all recognition and has arguably fractured along major fault lines. Those stress points aren’t exactly news and include things such as abortion, gay marriage, race, social care, gun laws, immigration, multiculturalism, economic management and so on.

Although it’s very easy to portray these as typically Republican right wing versus Democrat left wing political inclinations, that’s overly simplistic. There are people with strong opinions on all sides and it’s misguided to assume all Democrats support abortion on demand because it’s a “woman’s right” or that all Republicans support free access to guns on demand.

Yet what has undeniably happened increasingly over recent decades is that liberal viewpoints captured the moral high ground and are today often represented as being ‘mainstream’, ‘enlightened’, ‘just’ and ‘politically correct’. By contrast, viewpoints that argue against (e.g.) increased social care provisions are labelled as ‘reactionary’, ‘outdated’, ‘oppressive’ or the domain of marginalized cranks.

However, the intelligentsia in DC political and media leadership circles seem to have made the mistake of believing their own propaganda in this respect.

That’s perhaps understandable because they’d ‘seen off’ the previous rumblings of groups such as the Tea Party. So, they hugely underestimated the frustrations in very large sections of ‘traditional’ US society who lacked an outlet for their views, fears, hopes and aspirations – and into that breach stepped Donald Trump.

Trump – A Voice for the Unheard

Whatever one thinks about individual elements of Trump’s approach during the Primaries, there is little doubt that he has tapped into a vast reservoir of discontent in US society.

Nobody should doubt that Trump has the large-scale and spontaneous support of many in the US. His views, whether one agrees with them are not, are those of a large number of ordinary Americans who have been frustrated by not having a spokesperson.

In the past, Democrat Presidential candidates have portrayed this group as political ‘dinosaurs’, with views that have no place in modern America. Many traditional ‘comfortable’ Republican contenders have equally distanced themselves from this section of society, as they strove to adopt centrist stances and positions that were both ‘PC’ and in their view, ones which would make them potentially electable.

Trump’s brilliant inspiration and shrewd vision was to recognize the size of this group of disenchanted voters, who were anything but a tiny fringe minority. Even had it been in his nature, which it probably isn’t, he wasn’t going to tone down his views simply to make himself popular with the media or the ‘men in clubs’ in Washington.

He has effectively gone over the head of the political and media establishments and appealed to the masses – and masses they are. That’s why to date he’s been so successful and why he’s created a political earthquake.

If nothing else, he’s forcing the ‘unheard masses’ back into focus in the corridors of power.

Is Trump Electable?

Already, the Washington establishment is in danger of writing Trump off, should he get to stand against Hilary Clinton. The same tired-old clichés are being wheeled-out, branding him a racist, sexist and sadly deluded figure who doesn’t represent a significant proportion of US society.

Those views may well be VERY naive.

It’s already clear that Trump doesn’t just appeal to older white and ‘red neck’ voters. His plain-speaking and lack of fear of controversy is striking a chord with many – and that might cross traditional Republican-Democrat demarcations.

For example, it’s absurd and patronizing to postulate that African-Americans won’t vote for Trump because of his views on immigration via Mexico. If they’re struggling to find work and housing, then looking at local immigration issues as a possible contributory factor might be just as likely for African-American voters as White voters.

Equally, his stand on abortion might well strike a chord with significant numbers of predominantly Catholic Hispanic Americans, irrespective of his views on illegal immigration across the border or gun control.

Many voters of all political inclinations might be attracted to his stance on breaking the Washington establishment – whatever segment of society they come from.

Donald Trump is an astute man and has already proven himself to be a capable politician. His appeal may be wider-spread than many believe and he just might pull off an upset in the election. At the very least he’s forcing some soul-searching in the DC corridors of power along the lines of “who knows the electorate best, us or Donald Trump?

It’s a question that’s worrying the establishment to its core.

Neuromuscular Physical Therapy – Megan’s Case Study

In studying Megan’s case history and symptoms, key moments and events stand out in her time line of pain and dysfunction. Nine years ago, after the birth of her second child, was the first time that Megan noticed that her left foot was slightly wider and longer than her right foot. The timing of this is relevant as during the course of her pregnancy a hormone called relaxin would have been released into her system to loosen the ligaments of her pelvis in anticipation of childbirth. However, relaxin can also loosen ligaments elsewhere in the body and a longer and wider left foot would indicate the collapse of the main arches of the foot due to ligament laxity. This is one of the turning points in Megan’s history that has had a detrimental effect on her health ever since. The relaxed ligaments may never have fully recovered their full stabilizing strength and when she developed a tired aching sensation in her left medial arch a few years later it was probably as a result of this. A fallen arch will lead to over pronation and this will in turn put the tibialis anterior and possibly tibialis posterior muscles under undue stress as they try to stabilize and counteract over pronation. Stressed or overwhelmed muscles will form trigger points (TPs) within them and for tibialis anterior this can refer pain anteromedially as it passes the retinaculum. TPs in the tibialis posterior will refer pain into the sole/arch of the foot. Over pronation will lead to shortened peroneus longus which will further inhibit the tibialis muscles which will further exacerbate the problem in a continuous vicious circle.

The whiplash injury experienced last year would also add to Megan’s problems and since then she has experienced occasional headaches and neck stiffness. The whiplash injury almost certainly would have affected her sub occipital muscles, sternocleidomastoids (SCM), scalene and other stabilizers of the neck and spine. This whiplash would lead to improper neck movement which in turn would lead to TPs in the SCM and possibly the longus colli on one side (left) possibly due to the leg length discrepancy. TPs here would leave these muscles in a shortened state resulting in rotation of the head to the right hand side. If the longus colli is involved it result in kinetic chain problems and affect the peroneals on the lateral aspect of the lower limb further exacerbating the fallen arch. With the peroneus longus muscles in such an unhealthy state it is possible that it could have an effect on the sacrotuberous ligament of the pelvis and its ability to hold the sacrum in position. Megan states that one day last year she felt a twinge in her right sacroiliac joint while assisting an obese client up from a supine position. She experienced locking/jamming and diffuse soft tissue pain in QLs, multifidis and shooting pain into her hip. The fact that she was locked into torso flexion to the right suggests that the QLs went into spasm on the right side after insult and as we find out later her sacral base is an inch high on the right and there is posterior rotation of the right ilium with resultant postural imbalance whereby 2/3rd of Megan’s weight is pressing down on her right side. This extra load and postural imbalance has led to shooting pain in the trochanteric region and referred pain on the lateral aspect of the thigh due to TPs in the weakened gluteus medius and iliotibial band issues due to the over worked tensor fasciae latae.

With all this pain getting to unbearable levels, Megan turned to prescription drugs, codeine based painkillers, antidepressants, Zoloft, anti inflammatory tablets all of which would have exacerbated her problems through time by building up toxins in her system. She was also whilst under the influence of painkillers probably injuring tissue by doing activities that she would not have done if she had her natural alarm system of pain stopping her. The elastic support belt and the taping would have made the situation worse by encouraging atrophy of supporting muscle tissue.

Megan’s right shoulder is lower than the left possibly due to shortened latissimus dorsi pulling on the humerus and inhibiting upper trapezius and hypertrophy of the pectoralis minor muscle pulling the scapula forward and down.

As we consider Megan’s problems, symptoms, and case history, we can appreciate that she is suffering abject pain and dysfunction up and down her functional kinetic chain. From the pain in the plantar fasciae, spastic peroneus longus, inhibited tibialis, medially rotated tibia, medial knee pain, lateral thigh pain, trochanteric pain, lumbo – sacral pelvic pain and dysfunction, posteriorally rotated right ilium, lower left anterior superior iliac spine, 2/3rd weight imbalance to right hand side, lower back pain with QLs and multifidis in a shortened state, latissimus dorsi, neck extensors and flexors all giving problems we have to ask the question as to which functional kinetic chain we are dealing with. In my opinion, considering all areas involved, it would be the spiral oblique chain.

Megan would have to be informed that her treatment will be extensive and prolonged because some issues have been there for a while and would involve neural retraining for the dysfunction and imbalances present.

  • Medical screening.
  • Case history.
  • Postural assessment.
  • ROM testing / neural testing.
  • All shortened and restricted muscles would have to be relaxed / lengthened with TP therapy, METs, positional release / strain- counterstrain.
  • Inhibited muscles would have to be fired and strengthened with tapotement, METs and strengthening exercises.
  • Any areas of bind would need STR, cross fiber friction etc.
  • A consideration would be referral for PCIs to address the pronating left foot initially with a plan to strengthen that area long term.
  • Megan’s nutrition was not mentioned but I would be referring her to a specialist in that field to ensure that she has no nutritional deficiencies that would hinder the healing process.

Diabetic Coma Can Be Fatal For Diabetics

Diabetic coma blood sugar level should be avoided. Why? Because any blood sugar level over 500, but usually over 600mg, causes diabetic coma. It will likely occur when blood sugars are at this unusually high levels and the body becomes severely dehydrated as a result.

If you are 60 years old or above this should be your primary concern. When dehydrated, the elderly may have a distorted sense of thirst. Perhaps this is because they have less sensitivity to thirst that is affected due to age. In many cases, a history of excess thirst and urination may manifest in the elderly. This may happen weeks before diagnosis. Excess urination and extreme blood glucose levels lead to body cells being dehydrated. Thus, the body will become dehydrated. This severe loss of body fluids can lead to shock, coma, and death.

Another group who are particularly at risk is the chronically ill and disabled. This group on the other hand cannot sense their thirst or may be even be able to communicate. Dehydration may occur for a period but unless they are given continuous medical care, it may be manifest itself until it is too late.

Diabetic coma is also known as “hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome”. If a type II diabetic patient is ill, this is a very serious problem, perhaps even a fatal one. Fatality rates in these circumstances can reach 50%.

To be sure, there are many causes of diabetic coma, not just extremely high sugar levels. These may include:

Infection;

Heart attack;

Kidney failure;

Medicines (diuretics, heart medication, or steroids);

Illness;

Bleeding ulcer;

Blood clot; and

Uncontrolled blood sugar

If you are a diabetic, and you monitored extremely high blood glucose levels, there are greater chances that you can have diabetic coma, more so if it is complicated by one or more of the above causes. Unfortunately, the other causes listed above are also common among diabetic patients. It is therefore extremely important that you constantly monitor your blood sugar levels.

Diabetic coma symptoms may be manifested earlier than the diagnosis, perhaps weeks prior to the diagnosis. If you are in the vulnerable group, (e.g. diabetic, 60 years old or over, disabled) you should be very vigilant of the following symptoms:

Increased thirst;

Increased urination;

Weakness;

Drowsiness;

Altered mental state;

Headache;

Restlessness;

Inability to speak; and

Paralysis

If any of the symptoms manifest in your situation, you should test your blood glucose. Then, depending on the results of the test, you should immediately consult your doctor. More so if your test reveals blood sugar level of 600 mg/dl or more.

Now, how do you prevent diabetic coma? The following are simple suggestions:

Check your blood sugar regularly;

Check your blood sugar every four hours when you are sick;

Take special care of yourself when you are sick; and

Eat and live healthy.

Simple measures you can do yourself so you need not worry about complications brought about by diabetic coma blood sugar level.

How to Completely Get Rid of a Sore Throat in an Hour

Sore throats are a real pain in many a way. Mainly because it happens at the worst times when you really need your voice. The more you try to speak the more pain you feel. Then there’s the issue of your voice sounding hoarse as well.

Sore throat remedies can be used to help you overcome the pain and annoyance of a sore throat. In an hour, you could be feeling a lot better with some of the natural remedies listed.

The first remedy is to use steam therapy

Steam therapy is a natural remedy that helps with decongestion. Often when your throat is sore, it’s a result of some type of infection. Any infection can affect your sinuses and leave you with a blocked or runny nose. It causes your breathing to be affected and eventually leads to a sore throat.

To use steam therapy, just pour some boiling water into a bowl, lower your head over the bowl and place a towel over your head. This will direct the steam towards your nose and mouth, so you can inhale it.

The moisture from the steam will help reduce any inflammation around your Larynx and help to soothe a sore throat.

Tip: For improved results add a couple of drops of lavender oil to the water. This essential oil has anti-inflammatory agents as well as bactericides to help kill off any bacterial infections that cause your throat to be sore.

NOTE: Steam therapy is not suitable for people with asthma or other conditions that affect your breathing.

#2 Natural Sore Throat Remedy: Green Tea

Green tea is a natural drink and due to it being warm, it’s also great for soothing your throat. It’s handy to pour yourself a cup of green tea before or to drink with your dinner. When your throat’s sore, the thought of eating can be a nightmare as you know it’s going to be painful swallowing foods. The warm liquid with natural anti-bacterial properties help to fight infection.

Tip: Pour some luke warm water into a glass and add some salt. Use that for gargling to help clear your throat. Then drink green tea afterwards to get rid of the salty taste. This will give you double the benefits of anti-bacterial agents working together to fight the infection that is causing your sore throat.

The third remedy for a sore throat is to suck on a lemon or lime.

This one is pretty disgusting if you don’t like the sour taste of lemons or lime. It’s the citrus in the lemon that goes to work straight away to soothe your throat. Well not straight away as in within seconds. It hurts your throat more at first and that’s how you know the citrus is working. After doing that for as long as you can, the pain will start to subside.

When the pain does ease off, use an antiseptic mouthwash like Listerine and gargle that around your throat about 3 times a day and that will keep your throat from becoming as sore as it is or was.

What Are Normal Blood Glucose And Blood Sugar Levels?

This is the question my diabetic patients always ask. There are various methods to determine blood sugar level. Some tests give you accurate diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, while others will tell you how well you are managing your diabetes.

Fasting Blood Sugar Test:

Measures the gulucose level after 8 hours fast or overnight. Normal fasting glucose is less than 100mg/dl. If your fasting glucose is from 100mg/dl to 125mg/dl then you will have impaired blood glucose also known as Pre-Diabetes. If your sugar level is above 125mg/dl then your doctor will diagnose as a patient of diabetes. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may repeat the fasting blood glucose test on any other day. If you have blood sugar level of 126mg/dl or higher in two consecutive tests, then you may have diabetes. If you have glucose greater than 200mg/dl and you have symptoms of diabetes like increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision etc, then you may be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus without confirming it with second test.

Random Blood Glucose Test:

Random blood sugar test gives your blood sugar at any time in a day. Normal random blood sugar level should be less than 200mg/dl. If your random blood sugar is between 140mg/dl to 200mg/dl then you will have pre-diabetes.

Oral glucose tolerance test

This test measures your response to sugar. First we measure fasting glucose, and then glucose solution is given, after that we measure blood glucose after 1 hour and 2hours. A normal blood glucose level after an oral glucose tolerance test is less than 140 mg/dL. Level between 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL suggests pre-diabetes. A glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher two hours after you drink the glucose solution may suggest that you have diabetes mellitus.

Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test

This test is not for diagnosing diabetes, but it shows you how well you have controlled your sugar in last 2 or 3 months. Normal value is less than 7%, however if it is more than 7 then you and your doctor should think of changing your treatment of diabetes.

Always Remember, your blood glucose measurement alone is not enough to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Your doctor may do some other tests to find out which type of diabetes you have.

Television Causing Child Obesity

So much has changed since the boost of technology. Some years ago, kids played out in the sun all day, running or climbing a huge tree. Today, kids are play in virtual grounds through technology. The television is one of the most famous past-times of the youth. Since its invention our eyes have become glued to it most of the time. This is the lifestyle we have created and introduced the youth to whether directly or not, allowing it to over power us. We have also allowed health problems to continue, to worsen as the boob-tube lifestyle prevails. The question at hand is why the television is causing child obesity.

Obesity is a form of malnutrition wherein energy intake from food is stored as fat because its unused. Since a 1997 study, the incidence of child obesity has tripled, exceeding rates of the incidence adult obesity. It seems as if we’ve bred obesity from the home and we observed that indeed the television is causing child obesity. To become overweight or more importantly, obese is due (but not solely) to minimal physical activity which causes the body to store excess energy as fat. Television brought out the couch potato and this is the lifestyle many children and adolescents know of. Many children sit for hours watching so that’s why that television is causing child obesity. By becoming an audience to a television show, a person’s attention is directed to it so much that nothing else is done besides sitting, staring and maybe the occasional snack. Sometimes, we reach a point of excessive eating. Excessive eating combined with inactivity is very unhealthy. Energy converted from food should be consumed. It must be used up through physical exertion. An overweight child who devotes most of his free time to the television is victim to obesity as oftentimes the television is causing child obesity.

Although there are other factors that contribute to child obesity, the television is one of the factors that originate from home. It can be controlled and prevented. If a child is indeed, obese or on the verge of obesity, encourage the child to do more physical activities such as walking and playing. Let him stay away from the tube as too much television is causing child obesity. A sport (that requires high physical activity) may do better. Lessen the child’s time in front of the television. Explaining to the child and the family why the television is causing child obesity may help. It is also important to consider and address obesity as a health problem and not a problem of appearance. Encourage the family to be more involved and active with the child. We can prevent and stop obesity.

A Little Insight on Horny Goat Weed Dangers

Horny goat weed is a leafy plant and is also popular as barrenwort, epimedium, yin yang huo and xian ling pi. A herbal medicine is prepared out of the extract from the leaves. This medicine helps men with erectile dysfunction, and the medicine is also used for other ailments. A lot of medical warnings are issued with over the counter supplements of this particular herb. The horny goat weed dangers range from mild headache, vision problem and nausea to grave effects on the heart and breast cancer.

Mild effects: The Chinese utilized epimedium to make medicines and they used it very effectively. It was mainly utilized to treat erectile dysfunction but was also utilized in other ailments like osteoporosis, liver disease, heart disease, joint pains, bronchitis, high blood pressure, memory loss, tiredness and HIV/AIDS. The doctors state that there is very small evidence to support the above claims and that one product does not work for everybody. Many people can be allergic to horny goat weed and the mild horny goat weed dangers include rash, nausea, headache, hives, insomnia, vision problem and itching of the mouth. One must consult a doctor if they find these symptoms.

Serious effects: Serious horny goat weed dangers include dizziness, bleeding from nose and vomiting. As stated by doctors and nutritionists, a study has revealed that epimedium koreanum was discovered to also inhibit an important cholinesterase enzyme. Inhibition of this enzyme can supposedly mean the danger of the loss of muscle harmonization and can result in jerky motions as a result of acetylcholine increase in the muscles. A study carried on animals revealed that a high dose of icariin, a component of this herb can have a damaging effect on liver and kidneys and there can be serious internal bleeding. This internal bleeding can result into a hemorrhage stroke and a significant decrease in the blood pressure.

Risk for women: There are benefits for women in using horny goat weed and it includes decrease in the bone loss after menopause, as the Epimedium brevicornum is high in estrogenic activity which is needed for menopause. But the doctors also give a conflicting reply that there are Phytoestrogens that cause breast cancer and horny goat weed is loaded with phytoestrogens. Taking unrestricted amount of this herbal supplement can thus result in breast cancer in women.

Doctors and scientists are examining epimedium for possible advantages of the herb. The herb might be used in future to treat a lot of medical diseases. But for the time being, though, with no FDA rules and standards for the dosage and ingredients, the epimedium or horny goat weed supplements will be more harmful than do good. There are a lot of big companies like GNC who prepare epimedium weed supplements and they also set there own rules without getting an FDA approval. But even then it is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking a horny goat weed or epimedium supplement.

Itchy Penis Causes That Are Contagious

An itchy penis is one of the more private health concerns a man can have. But when is it cause for public concern – that is, when is the source of the itch contagious? Often, an itchy penis is a sign of improper hygiene and is the sole concern of the man affected. However, certain causes of penile itch can be spread either through skin-to-skin contact or through contact with clothing, towels and so on. Proper penis health, as well as responsible conduct in public and with partners, requires that a man get his condition diagnosed. In the meantime, below are two causes of itch that can be spread to others if measures are not taken to contain the problem.

Yeast Infection

Men can get yeast infections? Yes! Though this problem is more common in women, it is possible for men to get them, too. Men usually contract yeast infections, also known as thrush, from infected women, although men with diabetes may develop them on their own, as their medical condition encourages the overgrowth of yeast. Thrush occurs when the Candida yeast in the body multiplies excessively.

What symptoms indicate a yeast infection in men?

– Red penis rash

– Itching or burning on the tip of the penis

These are also symptoms of other health conditions, including sexually transmitted infections. That’s why it’s so important for men to seek diagnosis from a trained medical professional.

Treating a yeast infection is relatively simple. Antifungal creams, either over the counter or prescribed, are usually sufficient to nix the infection and restore balance to Candida yeast levels. Note: A man’s sexual partner(s) should also be tested and, if positive, treated for a yeast infection, lest they continue to pass it back and forth.

Jock Itch

Primarily a problem for active men who sweat a lot, jock itch occurs when the tinea cruris fungus sets up shop in a man’s groin area. This fungus loves moist, warm places; the groin folds are most hospitable to it, and men who spend plenty of time at the gym or engaged in sports are especially susceptible.

Symptoms of jock itch include:

– A distinctive rash that expands from a central point and has sharply defined edges

– The rash consists of red bumps that can be scaly; they may also leak fluid

– Moderate to severe itch

As with yeast infections, men shouldn’t self-diagnose. They should just know that, if they manifest with these symptoms, they need to be careful not to spread the potentially contagious source. The tinea cruris fungus loves to travel; it will hang out on a man’s clothing, towels and anything else that has come into contact with his equipment; if another man makes contact with these items, he will likely develop a case of jock itch himself.

Along with thoroughly washing all his clothing and other items that contact his penis, a man with jock itch should take care to keep his groin as clean and dry as possible. An antifungal cream can be purchased over the counter to usher out the fungus and get rid of the rash.

Fend off Dryness

A generally non-contagious problem that causes penile itching is simple dryness. Rough, vigorous play, either with the hand or a partner’s body, can leave skin raw, flaky and sore – not to mention itchy. Regular use of a penis health cream (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) can be helpful in this area. Natural hydrating ingredients like vitamin E and Shea butter help keep the skin moisturized and, therefore, itch-free. Also look for vitamin A on the ingredient list – this nutrient can inhibit bacteria that cause odors.

Removing Unwanted Leg Hair When There is Eczema or Psoriasis on the Legs is a Really Difficult Task

Leg shaving with eczema or psoriasis all over the legs is really difficult. This article focuses on how the different hair removal method affects in case of psoriasis or eczema.

First of all, Shaving is not an option in this situation. It cannot be done on open sores. Shaving scrapes off the eczema’s top and leaves it painfully raw. But sometimes eczema does not cover the whole leg, so the parts which are not infected can be easily shaved. But that too requires shaving cream to be applied.

Also the Depilatory (hair removing creams) should not be considered. The chemicals of the depilatory will burn the skin portions infected with eczema or psoriasis and will cause lesions. Fumes can also be painful application. Moreover, it is difficult to wash the cream off without getting it on the sores. If still a person wants to use a depilatory, it should be first tested on a more sensitive area rather than the ankle and forearm. The eczema or psoriasis infected body parts are more sensitive than others.

Waxing is also not advisable on open sores as well. However when the sores are close and are not quite dry, waxing works better compared to shaving. Waxing is also less drying. The sugaring method would also have similar results. Using it on open or half healed sores might rip the skin. It should be kept in mind that the injured areas are more sensitive to heat.

At last, Twee zing remains the one and only hair removal method which is suitable for removing leg hair with Eczema or Psoriasis. Though, Twee zing is time consuming, but it is the only hair removal method which is effective and feasible with conditions like eczema sores. Hairs in the sores come out very easily. The tweezers which are needle pointed are the best for this condition because they grip the hair without pinching the skin at all. Help of another person may be needed to reach the hard places like backs of the thighs.

Any of the above mentioned methods should be applied gently on the skin. The skin should not be ripped, rubbed, or scratched. If any reaction is happened, cool water to washing the area off will work, but it should not be rubbed at all. Doctor can be consulted if it is not healed.

Ash Dieback in Garden Trees

Ash disease in garden trees

Ash dieback has hit the headlines recently as the government attempts to stop this disease from devastating ash trees in Britain. So far most of the talk has been about woodlands but what should you do if you have an ash tree in your garden? What symptoms should you watch out for and what should you do if you suspect a tree in your garden to be infected?

The disease is caused by the fungus Chalara fraxinea which is spread by wind borne spores. The first symptoms you may see are spots on the leaves or you may notice that the tree is losing its leaves before autumn arrives. Initially small twigs will die as the disease spreads in from the leaves. Later, as the disease enters larger branches, a canker (discoloured, roughened bark) will spread upwards and downwards from where the infected twig joins the branch. This is often a rough diamond shape. As the fungus kills the tissue more limbs will die back until eventually the whole crown is dead.

The disease has killed 90 per cent of ash trees in Denmark and is prevalent throughout Europe now. Most of the cases recorded in Britain to date are related to imported nursery stock. As so many plants bought at garden centres and nurseries are now imported from Europe, it is quite possible that your garden ash tree may be infected if it has been planted fairly recently. Unless your garden is a large country garden with ash trees grown around as part of wind break, it is likely that you won’t have common ash (Fraxinus excelsior ) planted in your garden. Claret ash or Fraxinus angustifolia ‘Raywood’ is a relative of common ash. With its smaller stature, more delicate leaves and beautiful claret colour in autumn, it makes a good specimen tree. Although Claret ash has been known to host the disease, none have yet exhibited the classic dieback. However this cannot be ruled out in the future and you should still keep an eye on this tree. Mountain ash or Sorbus aucuparia is actually a different species and does not suffer from this disease.

If you do see any of these symptoms in your garden tree it is very important that you contact the Forestry Commission Plant Health Centre on 01420 23000. You should not try to deal with it yourself as it is vital that the Forestry Commission knows of all new cases. Also there are other diseases which cause similar symptoms. There is also an app for smartphone users which allows them to report sightings as well as upload photos of suspected cases. Forget about hashtags, get ashtag, which can be downloaded from http://www.ashtag.org. This application could save the lives of many trees.

Dealing With Allergies – Help with Hives

Hives are one of the unfortunate side effects of many allergies. These annoying pink bumps and raised patches aren’t just unsightly – they’re also very itchy, burning and stingy!

Hives can pop up anywhere on your body after coming in contact with, or eating something that turns your immune system into overdrive, causing an allergic reaction. They may be relatively small (like a mosquito bite), or big like a dinner plate. Hives may also come in groups or clusters.

Many people associate eating acidic foods like fresh tomatoes or strawberries with hives, but did you know that virtually any food or allergen could cause these itchy bumps to occur? It really just depends on how your body reacts (or over reacts) to the allergens it comes in contact with. While one person may experience itchy watery eyes and a runny nose from pollen, another may get hives!

Are hives very common? Yes! It is estimated that as many as 25% of us will get them at least once in our lives.

When you’re exposed to something that can trigger hives, the cells in your body begin to release a chemical called histamine, which causes fluid to leak from the small blood vessels under the skin. When this fluid collects under the skin, it forms the blotches we call hives.

The most common cause of hives is an allergic reaction to an insect bite, food, or some other allergen. But other things can cause hives to. They include:

-Exposure to the cold (like diving into a cold pool).

-Exercise.

-The sun.

-Stress.

-Infections caused by viruses.

No matter what the cause, a case of hives can last for a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few long days.

Antihistamines can be used to alleviate the itchiness and burning of hives, but they usually go away all by themselves in a few hours, or a few days. Sometimes a stronger prescription medication is needed, however, to alleviate the discomfort of hives.

It is rare, but hives can sometimes be a sign of a more serious allergic reaction that can affect breathing and other body functions. If someone you know exhibits any signs of breathing trouble (a tight chest, swollen throat; raspy voice or wheezing), after you’ve noticed hives appearing, get medical help immediately! If the allergic reaction begins to constrict their throat, it can prevent enough air from getting into the lungs within minutes. Some people who know they have these serious reactions carry a one-shot pen like dose of epinephrine with them called an Epi-pen. Although it will ease their discomfort, they still must get to a hospital right away.

As you can see, hives can be more than juts an itchy annoyance. When coupled with a severe allergy, they can be life threatening. The important thing to remember is that in most cases, they are a temporary reaction to something you’ve touched or eaten and will go away with little if any attention or medication.
