Chest Acne – Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Chest acne is also known as body acne and can range in appearance from a few red pimples and spots to weeping pustules, blackheads, whiteheads and even cysts. In its mild form, it may not always cause major discomfort but severe forms can lead to skin infection, bleeding and scarring.

Who gets chest acne?

Chest acne can affect people ranging from 11 to 40 years old and above. It can appear equally in both men and women. It is still a mystery why chest acne can afflict some people while others don’t exhibit the same problem. Its root cause is still unknown. It does have a tendency to run in families and it usually appears in people with extra oily skin and those who sweat excessively.

How does chest acne develop?

Chest acne develops in the same way as regular acne does. Oil-producing sebaceous glands found just underneath the skin’s surface naturally excrete sebum. Usually, no problems occur as long as the rate of sebum production remains normal. Sebum and dead skin cells are usually washed away during regular cleansing and bathing, so the skin remains clear. It is only when there is hyperactivity in the glands that there is reason for concern.

When there is an over production of sebum, the pores become clogged. The trapped sebum and dead skin cells create the perfect living condition for the bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. These bacteria settle on the skin, multiply and cause skin infection. This infection leads to the formation of pimples or acne, characterized by red and inflamed bumps.

Treating chest acne

If what you have is a mild form of chest acne, also referred to as ‘zits’, you’re probably in luck. Chest acne that is still in its initial stages is usually easier to treat. You also don’t need to worry about the type and number of treatments available for chest acne because there are many options you can choose from, depending on the severity of your condition.

There is no known cure for acne and any product promising to erase your chest acne for good may be stretching the truth. This is because there is no true cure for acne since its root cause is unknown. Whatever treatment that is available in the market today is used mainly to address the symptoms. Eradicate the symptoms and you eradicate chest acne.

If you have chest acne, never try to press a pimple with your bare hands or attempt to cut through a cyst. You will risk infection if you do and you could even cause some scarring to appear. Try to handle your chest acne as gently as possible and remember to keep your hands off unless necessary.

Use an antibacterial soap that is especially formulated to treat acne and wash the affected area. You might have to repeat the process depending on the product’s or your doctor’s recommendation. Carefully dry your skin and apply an antibacterial cream. Try to wash the affected area twice a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed.

There are several brands of over-the-counter creams and gels that are commonly used to treat chest acne, most of which contain the ingredient benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is an effective oxidizer and keratolytic that effectively kills the P. acnes bacteria and helps reduce the redness and swelling.

If applying a topical antibacterial ointment seems inconvenient, ask your doctor if it’s possible for you to use an oral antibiotic. This is usually the method of treatment for acne that covers a wider area of the skin.

When taking antibiotics, you might have to follow a treatment course that could last for several weeks, sometimes as long as 12 weeks in more severe cases. If you don’t complete a treatment using antibiotics, chest acne will reappear and might even worsen, so make sure you follow your doctor’s recommendation.

For more severe forms of chest acne, such as those that involve pustules and cysts, see a doctor for a proper recommendation of treatment. He might prescribe stronger medications that you can take in oral form or receive as an injection. You might also be recommended for steroids or laser therapy.

Tight clothing and chest acne

If you find that tight clothing tends to aggravate your chest acne, try to avoid wearing them. Choose clothes that do not hug your skin too much and wear fabrics made of light, breathable material like cotton. Try not to use fabrics that may chafe or irritate your skin.

For days when you need to expose your décolletage, there is an emergency fix you can use. Apply a mild disinfectant on your skin and use a concealer that contains salicylic acid. Use a swab to apply the product to ensure that you keep the area germ-free. This will serve as a temporary solution until after you’ve found the perfect solution for your chest acne.

Why Do I Always Feel Sick? – Cause of Chronically Feeling Sick Revealed!

If you’re reading this article then I’m sure you are a lot like I was, asking the question why do I always feel sick? The truth of the matter is that it’s an incredibly frustrating feeling to day in and day out feeling like garbage and never finding any kind of relief. Doctors appear to be of no help while your health just continues to drive downwards endlessly it would seem. If you’ve been trying to find the answer, read on because I’m going to let you know what’s more than likely been making you feel sick.

To effectively answer the question why do I always feel sick, you need to look at what you surround yourself with in your life. This goes in both a literally and metaphorical sense, if you are constantly surrounding by negative people or stressful influences, your immune system will suffer as a result. When the immune system is weakened for some reason you are then likely to develop further, chronic illness. Beyond these factors though are also two I would consider the most important.

Allergies & Diet

Allergies: If there are improperly diagnosed allergies you respond to then your immune system will constantly be in an uphill battle to recover. In fact many times allergies are the hidden major cause of chronically feeling unwell. The reduction and elimination of these allergies is critical in making a total and complete recovery from always feeling sick.

Diet: Ths is a critical factor in that the food you eat directly affects the way your body functions in every possible way. Not only this but Diet is also a major factor in determining what grows in your body. As your body houses literally more microbes in and on it than the total amount of cells in your entire body this is a very important factor in terms of your health as the quality of these microbes literally translates into the overall health you experience. The North American diet though and many other modern diets around the world that primarily consume processed foods are literally making people sick through feeding a major health threat that remains in a somewhat dormant state in over 85% of the population… Candida Albicans.

If you haven’t heard of Candida, essentially it is a fungus that grows in the majority of the population and can over-develop in many cases causing every symptom imaginable including:

o thrush

o athletes foot

o sore throat

o indigestion

o acid reflux

o abdominal gas

o headaches

o migraines

o excessive fatigue

o cravings for alcohol

o anxiety

o vaginitis

o rectal itching

o cravings for sweets

o persistent cough

o earaches

o low sex drive

o muscle weakness

o irritability

o learning difficulties

o sensitivity to fragrances and/or other chemicals

o cognitive impairment

o inability to think clearly or concentrate

o hyperactivity

o mood swings

o diarrhea

o constipation

o hyperactivity

o itching

o acne

o eczema

o depression

o sinus inflammation

o pre-menstrual syndrome

o dizziness

o poor memory

If you can relate to any of the above symptoms then you need to immediately begin learning about Candida and how it can wreck your health. More importantly you need to address the cause of why you always feel sick.

Traveling Overseas – How to Choose a Resort Hotel

While the same general rules apply when choosing any resort hotel, extra care must be exercised when the destination is overseas.

Safety is a key consideration in some parts of the world. Questions the traveler should ask include:

  • How secure are the facilities? Fenced in compounds with security guards may seem a little prison-like, but could be worth the inconvenience.
  • Is it close to a high-crime urban area, or in a more secluded region?
  • What reputation does this part of the world have in terms of tourist safety?
  • Has this particular resort had any security issues?

Consider distance and ease of access when it comes to overseas travel.

  • How many hours of flying time are involved?
  • Are direct flights available, and if not, how many connections will there be?
  • Is the resort convenient to the airport, or will more travel be required?
  • Does the resort provide transportation to and from the arrival point?

Another concern with overseas destinations is health.

  • What diseases are common to the region?
  • What inoculations are required?
  • Does the country have modern well equipped hospitals?
  • How accessible are health care facilities at the resort?
  • Is the chosen travel insurance adequate for this part of the world?
  • Have there been reports of health related issues ( food poisoning, hepatitis etc.) at the resort?

Language and culture should be taken into account when planning an overseas holiday.

  • While the resort hotel will have English-speaking staff, will communication off-premises be a problem?
  • Are there cultural issues to be aware of? In some countries belonging to a particular religion, or being openly gay could pose problems. Women may have difficulty traveling alone.
  • Are some types of dress unacceptable? Shorts or mini-skirts may be frowned upon.
  • In some Asian countries, native-born women traveling with foreign men are looked upon as prostitutes.

Traveling overseas can be a rewarding experience. Some basic homework will aid in choosing the right resort hotel. As with any destination, one of the best ways of assuring the right choice is to speak to somebody who has been there. First-hand knowledge beats slick brochures every time.

Parvovirus In Your Dog

Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) is a very contagious virus that affects dogs and is more prominent in puppies because of their weak immune systems and the severity of symptoms. There are prevention methods, but early detection and immediate Vet care are essential to save a dog or puppy that exhibit symptoms.

Parvo is not as rare as some believe, it is spread when one dog comes into contact with the feces of an infected dog and any dog is susceptible to it. Some studies indicate that it could also be air-borne and your dog could inhale it. When infected, dogs will suffer severe diarrhea, high fever, loss of appetite, vomiting and can die in as little as two days at the onset of symptoms.

Prevention is the best defense against this deadly disease and vaccinations could prove vital to your dog’s survival. Because this virus is so deadly and acts fast to destroy your dog’s organ systems its natural antibodies are not sufficient to combat the disease. Vaccinations are given in three stages at scheduled times and a booster in adulthood. Your Vet will direct you in this process and see that your dog is properly protected against Parvo and other life threatening diseases.

The symptoms of Parvo are:

· Diarrhea

· Dehydration

· Lethargy

· Vomiting

· Loss of appetite

· Bloody discharges

· High Fever

You should take your dog to the Vet as soon as possible if he/she exhibits any of these symptoms. Your dog’s survival hinges on how fast treatment is begun. Dehydration will be the first symptom addressed and may require IV fluids to prevent vomiting. In severe cases of bloody discharge, a blood transfusions may be needed and would require a lengthy hospital stay.

University medical centers and research foundations have conducted individual studies for a natural treatment, that helps combat the disease and can be used at home, eliminating the need for a long, confined Vet visit.

Parvovirus is most deadly in younger pets, as their immune systems are not fully developed, so it is imperative to their survival that they be vaccinated against this deadly disease. It is also seen in older dogs that may be sick and have a weakened immune system. Seek medical attention immediately if your dog exhibits any symptoms noted above.

Soybean Side Effects – Mad About Soy

Not because I hate soy but because I hate the way the Soy industry has lied to us and poisoned us for profit. You must read Kaayla T. Daniels’s book The Whole Soy Story to truly understand the history and damaging effects of soy. The book contains many compelling testimonials, about the dangers of soy, from real people. The serious health problems caused by heavy soy consumption are unbelievable. Soybeans are a cheap, crappy, hard to digest, food source with many harmful side effects. Once again you have been lied to and I will not tone down the truth so corporations can market waste products as health food. I know what you’re thinking. If soy is so bad then how come most people think it is good? This is why:

First of all, the origins of soybean use, 3000 years ago, in ancient China, Japan and Indonesia came out of poverty and famine. The soybean did not serve as a food until the discovery of fermentation techniques.1 Soybeans were used for crop rotation to add nitrogen to the soil.

They were not eaten.

These ancient peoples would have rather eaten fish and meat they just did not have enough. Soy Protein or Tofu evolved as a poor man’s meat substitute. It was discovered that fermenting the soybeans gave them a better flavor, made them more edible and medicines could be created from the soybeans-like Nattokinase. It is the fermenting of soy that makes it healthy in small quantities. This fermentation of foods has been used since ancient times to preserve food and create medicines from food, and is known as “Alchemy”.2

The Chinese did not eat unfermented soybeans because of the large quantities of natural toxins or “antinutrients” that can cause serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and conditions of the pancreas including cancer.1 Unfermented soy is not healthy at all and large quantities, such as the levels currently consumed in America, is very detrimental to our health. It has been linked to hypothyroidism, early puberty in children, loss of testosterone, and many other hormone related health problems.2 The American soy industry took the unfermented soybean, genetically modified it and bastardized it into an unhealthy food that nature never intended. What is further compounding the problem is the relentless multi-billion dollar marketing campaign to convince us that soy is health food and we should eat it in quantity.

“Marketing costs money, especially when it needs to be bolstered with “research”, but there are plenty of funds available. Soybean producers pay $80 million annually to support United Soybean‘s program to “strengthen the position of soybeans in the marketplace and maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets for uses for soybeans and soybean products.” Private companies like Archer Daniels Midland also contribute their share. ADM spent $9 million for advertising during the course of a year.”1 ADM is, of course, the corporation that brought us Hydrogenated Soybean Oil or “Trans Fats”. The marketing is working. “Sales from soy milk alone have risen from $2 million in 1980 to over $300 million in the US last year.”1

The best marketing strategy for a product that is inherently unhealthy is, of course, a health claim. 1

Claims that eating soy can “lower cholesterol levels” and “reduce cancer” have been approved by the FDA after heavy lobbying and “alleged research” from the soy industry supposedly proving a health benefit. The opposite is actually true. Soy contains “antinutrients” that are toxic and carcinogenic to the human body.2

Soy protein (Tofu) is the spoogy waste leftover from making soybean oil. This sludgy byproduct from the soy oil industry was considered a waste product and animal feed until recently. By the way, animals do not like soybeans either and will only eat them when they are starving to death.

When I first started weight training I picked up a tub of vanilla flavored soy protein powder and started chugging down some chalky, ill tasting shakes with glee. I thought I was doing myself a big favor but little did I know I was actually reversing any chance of muscular gains. Scanning through a recent “Muscle Magazine” I saw an article supposedly reviewing the different protein powder supplements available on the market today. The article pictured animated protein tubs with friendly faces on them and the names “Soy”, “Whey”, “Casein” and “Egg”. Whey and Soy were portrayed as the best choice for health, low cost and nutritional value. Now listen carefully to what I am going to tell you next. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU! Whey and Soy protein are waste products from the food industry, cleverly disguised as “health food” and heavily marketed to the American consumer.

Soy Protein Isolate is a heavily processed product. A slurry of soybeans is acid washed and then mixed with an alkaline solution. Acid washing in aluminum tanks leaches high levels of aluminum into the final product. The curd is then dried at high temperatures completely denaturing the final product and making the protein ineffective and drastically altered from what nature intended. Animals on soy feed have to actually be given lysine supplements for normal growth.2

Don’t trust Men’s Fitness magazine either. “Open a copy and you will find pages and pages of full color ads for soy based candy bars and instant beverages promoted as a way to create the macho man with perfect abs. Sadly-ironically-most issues contain the requisite article advising these super-built Lotharios how to have great sex. Were Men’s Fitness to warn it’s readers about the fact that soy lowers testosterone levels in men, advertising revenues would dry up and the magazine would fold.”2 (Kaayla T. Daniel)

Tear up your Fitness and Muscle Magazines that are filled with lies and eat a delicious steak or fish dinner.

Maybe you have heard of Edamame, the new “healthy” baby green soybean pods. While eating at a local Sushi restaurant recently I noticed tables of customers around me happily munching on Steamed Edamame appetizers. Surely this must be good, right? Wrong! Edamame is crap too! The good news is these baby soybeans still in the pod are tender and more palatable. They also contain less of the harmful plant estrogens that diminish testosterone. So I would compare them to light cigarettes. They are much less harmful than regular soybeans that are loaded with anti-testosterone hormones!

Supporters of Soy debunk milk and supporters of milk (from pastured animals) debunk soy. They are both right and they are both wrong. Small amounts of milk from pure pastured animals would be nice and ideal but not necessary. Small amounts of fermented soy products like Nattokinase and Miso prepared the ancient way are OK and considered medicine in the East.

If you are not eating organic, you should know that 99% of the non-organic soy we eat is genetically modified and has one of the highest percentages of contamination by pesticides of any of our foods.1 This processed, genetically modified “American Soy” that we know, is poisoning us and causing illness and disease.

Soy Protein excellent for lowering Testosterone

Eating Soy protein causes lowered Testosterone levels. This is especially troubling to men and bodybuilders. To a bodybuilder, soy protein is like Kryptonite! The plant estrogens will rob you of your manhood, shrink your muscles and lower your sex drive. Ancient monks used to eat extra tofu to help them to easily maintain their vows of celibacy.2

Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known; those of zinc are less so.1 I met someone recently who was vegetarian and ate lots of tofu because she “loves animals”. For gods sake don’t eat a waste product from a crappy bean because you love animals! Love animals and eat raw nuts, “quality” beans and maybe some eggs. I love and respect animals as well and I am often astounded by the awesome beauty of nature’s wild creatures. Humans, however, did not rise to the top of the food chain just to step aside and eat tofu because we love animals. I love them, respect them and eat some of them too!

Dump your milk down the sink! Spit your Tofu out the window! Throw your milk and soy products in the dumpster today and be healthier tomorrow!

Reasons and Remedies For Blood in Stool

There are many reasons you may discover blood in your stool, and some of them are life threatening. Some are less so, but finding the cause is very important.

How do you know there’s blood?

Seeing something red is one way, but that is not the only thing to watch for. If the blood has been in or through the stomach, it won’t be red. It’ll be black and have the consistency of tar or coffee grounds. Both types can be a sign of something bad.

What causes it?

1) Medications and herbs: Aspirin, willow bark and blood thinners can cause bleeding in the intestines. Anti-platelet medications can do the same thing. This is something you should speak to your doctor about, as you may need a change in these medications.

2) Ulcers: Whether it’s in your stomach or your intestines, an ulcer can bleed. Stomach ulcers can cause this to exit on both ends of the alimentary canal. This is a potentially life threatening problem, so getting treatment fast is important.

3) Hemorrhoids: This burning, itching problem around the anus can actually rupture. If so, the color will be fairly bright red. Diverticulitis (an abnormal pocket in the intestines) can also bleed.

4) Crohn’s Disease: Another name for this is ulcerative colitis, and as the name suggests it causes ulcers in the digestive tract.

5) Colon Cancer: This is obviously not something that can be treated at home, and one of its symptoms is bloody stools.

Some of these problems can be dealt with using herbal remedies and lifestyle changes. Others may need the help of your doctor, especially if cancer is the cause. It’s always best to consult your doctor, especially in the above cases. The doctor can give you a diagnosis and help you come up with a plan that will be beneficial for you.

For ulcers and Crohn’s Disease, you may be able to use marshmallow or licorice root to coat the digestive tract. You will probably also need an antibiotic, at least in the case of regular ulcers. Don’t take any medications at the same time as the herbs, as it can prevent proper absorption. Don’t use licorice root if you have high blood pressure.

Hemorrhoids may be eased by sitz baths, witch hazel and aloe vera. The witch hazel acts as an astringent, and may shrink the hemorrhoid. Aloe will help reduce inflammation. Don’t drink the juice, as it can cause explosive diarrhea, which would be an irritant.

Colon cancer, as mentioned above, cannot be treated at home. If the doctor approves, oats and marshmallow may be useful. Due to the side effects, licorice root would be a bad idea.

There is one more thing to consider if you see an off-color stool. Some of the things we eat can change the color and not be a threat. Black licorice and pepto-bismol, lead, iron tablets and blueberries can turn the stool dark. Tomatoes can give a reddish color, especially if a great many are eaten.

Health Benefits of Drinking Black Tea

A study done at American Heart Association – New Orleans, have found that the tea drinkers have a far lower risk of heart attack.

Black tea expands and relaxes the arteries thereby increasing flow of blood to the heart.

The study was conducted over a period of 8 weeks and involved about 50 participants(both men and women) with coronary artery disease.

They were made to drink 4 cups of either black tea or just plain water for about four consecutive weeks.

The arteries of a healthy person release nitric oxide which causes the arteries to dilate. But persons suffering from coronary disease do not produce as much nitric oxide.

The research revealed that drinking tea reversed this abnormality whereas drinking water did not have any sort of effect on the people.

What is black tea?

Tea without sugar is called as black tea. In India and Middle-east black tea is also referred to as ‘sulemani chai’.

Both black and green tea are beneficial for the heart, according to latest researches in this field. They can both act as good antioxidants, freeing the body from harmful toxins.

Consuming black tea can also increase the amount of favanoids in the blood. The high levels of anti-oxidant seem to lower cancer rates too. It can also fight bacteria in the mouth and prevent tooth decay.

Brief History of Black Tea:

Black tea has a history of being used for medicinal purposes since ancient times, much before it became a breakfast tea.

It has long been an article of trade. Compressed bricks of black-tea even served as a form of de-facto currency in Mongolia, Tibet and Siberia into the 19th century.

This was traditionally the only tea known to western culture; though green tea has started to catch on somewhat, still black accounts for over 90% of all the tea sold in the West

Few more benefits of drinking black tea are:

1. Helps relieve diarrhea

2. Lowers cholesterol level

3. It can help in making breathing easy for people suffering from asthma.

4. Helps maintain blood pressure to normal levels.

5. Has a therapeutic effect on gastric and intestinal problems.

Wow! Amazing, isn’t it? Just think how much useful black tea can be for our body.

From now on, shouldn’t we start the habit of drinking it on regular basis – like 2 cups daily? It is advisable to drink black-tea without sugar.

Kidney Diet Secrets That Can Reverse Chronic Kidney Failure

There was a time when the main remedy for advanced kidney failure was kidney dialysis, which — although effective — requires regular repetition and is highly inconvenient.

So it’s exciting to see there have been some very promising reports by leading kidney disease researchers, who have published articles in highly regarded, peer-reviewed medical journals about their success in reversing kidney disease by using a specially designed kidney diet.

More recently, recent research by Dr Charles Mobs, PhD, at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, found a diet with quite high levels of fat, but restricted carbohydrates and with only moderate consumption of protein can actually reverse kidney failure in as little as two months. In fact it has been found that just four weeks on the diet may be enough to reverse the slide down to kidney failure.

The key secret of a kidney failure diet is based around the certain kidney disease diet restrictions. These include:

Salt or sodium.

Whilst these items are still permissible in a kidney failure diet menu, the amounts need to be strictly controlled, depending on the degree of damage that has occurred to the kidneys. This is because the ability of a damaged kidney to excrete excess amounts of these substances is limited. For example, healthy kidneys can deal with as much as 4700 milligrams of potassium, whilst a person with kidney disease should keep their daily intake strictly below 2700 milligrams. The Recommended Daily Allowance for potassium for healthy folks is set at 3,500 milligrams.

A similar restriction applies when you need to adopt a low phosphorous diet, because impaired kidneys can only reasonably handle 700 – 900 milligrams daily, compared with the up to 2,000 milligrams a day a healthy pair of kidneys can cope with.

Many folks know about the dangers of excess salt or sodium, and these are now generally well highlighted on food labels. It is recommended that you eat no more than 2,400 milligrams of salt or sodium daily. Unfortunately, it’s very easy to exceed this by a very wide margin, because salt is found in virtually all processed foods and even in the most unlikely places, such as breakfast cereals and even top brands of mineral water.

Generally, a healthy pair of kidneys will be able to dump any excess, although constant high levels bring with it the danger of raised blood pressure — which, in turn — can damage the kidneys.

But, if you are on a chronic kidney failure diet, salt consumption needs to be strictly controlled to between 1,000 and 2,000 milligrams a day, from all sources, depending on your level of kidney impairment. This is to avoid a harmful build up of salt which can result in fluid building up in the lungs, making it very hard to breathe and even bringing about heart failure, due to overworking the heart by excess fluid in the bloodstream.

Excessive protein consumption is one of the possible causes of kidney disease. So, not only is the amount of protein consumed when on a renal failure diet important, so is the quality.

And, if you have been depressed by all this gloom about what you can’t eat, let’s now celebrate all the mouthwatering treats that you can feast on whilst on a kidney failure diet plan.

Chief amongst those is one of the highest forms of quality protein: oily fish, such as delicious salmon. This is rich in Omega 3 oils, which was shown in research by Dr Alexander Leaf of Harvard Medical School who fed fish oil to animals with kidney disease and affected a 100% cure. A 3 ounce piece of wild salmon contains 50 milligrams of sodium, 274 milligrams phosphorus and 368 milligrams of potassium.

And you can also feast on red bell peppers, which are delicious raw, stuffed with rice and herbs or roasted in olive oil. Yet a half a cup only contains 1 milligram of sodium, 10 milligrams of phosphorus and 88 milligrams of potassium. What’s more they are a very rich source of vitamin C (containing twice as much as a green pepper). They also contain vitamin A, as well as vitamin B6, folic acid and fiber. The red color also shows they contain lycopene, an antioxidant thought to protect against certain cancers.

You can also enjoy onions in many dishes to add texture and flavor, because they are not only amongst the healthiest vegetable to eat, they are also crammed with flavonoids, especially quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that works to reduce heart disease and protects against many cancers. And onions keep you well under your kidney diet targets, containing just 3 milligrams of phosphorus, 3 milligrams of sodium and 116 milligrams of potassium in 1/2 a cup. Onions are also a good source of chromium, a mineral that helps with the efficient metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein.

And the even more exciting news is the development of diets, based on all this highly respected research has allowed some folks with end stage renal failure to actually reverse their kidney disease to such an extent they have actually managed to avoid starting kidney dialysis at all.

How To Reduce Or Eliminate A Cold Sore Outbreak

Cold sores, or herpes simplex of the lips, are the bane of people everywhere. Not only is it rather unattractive looking to have a cold sore on your lip, if left untreated and unaddressed, it can be rather painful and uncomfortable as well. If you consult a physician, you’ll be told what millions of other cold sore sufferers have in the past, which is that you just have to wait for it to go away or start taking an expensive prescription medication. While we are in no way contradicting the valid medical advice provided to you by your physician, there are some cold sore treatments that a conventional doctor would rarely discuss. These “cures” involve a whole body or holistic approach to health.

The primary ascribed cause of these is the herpes simplex virus. People tend to become infected through openings in the skin of their lips, followed shortly with some minor swelling and discomfort at the site of infection. Doctors will be the first to tell you that, in the vast majority of cases, your immune system is the only thing that can really combat the effects of these sores. Unless this is your first time having a cold sore, most likely you’re dealing with a dormant form of the herpes simplex virus in your system. “Stressors” are external events that tax the body, and can cause this dormant form of the cold sore virus to make its resurgence. There are several great ways and you can not only prevent these from making their reappearance, but improve your overall health, as well.

First, adequate rest and a good diet have long since been known to be the best cold sore treatments. If you’re planning on recovering from this as quickly as possible, you’re going to have to take it easy for the next few days. One of the primary “stressors” that will cause them to flare up is an abundance of stress and the lack of sleep. Your immune system can only do so much if you’re not taking care of self. So stop, get plenty of rest and eat meals that contain most if not all of your nutritional needs for the day.

Second, purchase for yourself a remedy to compensate for any stressors you have or slack in your diet. A great pharmaceutical quality nutritional immune support supplement is needed, designed specifically to help your body fight them off. It accomplishes this in three ways. First it deprives the virus of the nutrients the virus needs to replicate. Second, it exposes the virus to your body’s immune system. Third it boosts your immune system to help fight off the virus. Another supplement that acts as a herpes treatment is the amino acid, Lysine, which has been proven to suppress the growth of the herpes simplex virus. Vitamin C in large doses has also been noted as one of the best nutritional cold sore treatments.

Your doctor should be your primary source of herpes treatment related information. This article should serve as an addition to the advice you receive from them. That said, you should know that the health your body, and by extension your lips, is completely your responsibility. If you want to keep in the best shape, you’re going to have to and meet your dietary needs. By doing this you not only improve your health, you prevent future outbreaks.

The Spirit of the Blackthorn Tree

From the earliest times our Celtic and Druid ancestors from Iron Age times and probably before, the countryside in which they lived was the centre of their universe. It was full of meaning and wisdom. The trees were particularly important in the role each should play in their lives. We can once again use this ancient wisdom, along the part the trees played in the seasons of the year, and the time of birth and death in their lunar months. One of the trees that had great powers in their world was the Blackthorn.

It was firstly symbolic of its bright white blossom in the early spring. A coming out into the white pure light, shown by the brightness of its flowers appearing out of the darkness of the winter, like our ancestors we can see this time of blossom as time of coming out of a black period, a time of darkness, of death, and a new awakening. A time of a stirring of positivity within one’s self and a time of emergence from the long dark times of winter, a dark place, time of difficulty, a depressing time. Let the blossom be your light at the end of the dark tunnel.

As the first green shoots of the early leaves start to appear, so our first creative signs will start to appear, nourish them and let them open out as the leaves of the Blackthorn open out in nature.

The Black thorn is the Tree of Strength and Perseverance, so strong and resilient is its wood to the weather, the cutting of its branches for staffs and also for the shillelagh, it is hard wood and, grows back very quickly and stronger, and can grow where many other trees cannot. Let the Blackthorn be your strength, your perseverance, use it as your staff, as did Joseph of Arimathea when he arrived in Glastonbury and planted his staff which took root and blossomed. Let your creative thoughts planted blossom and come forth in positivity.

On your path there will still be trials and tribulations, but new growth of your strength will see you through, with the help of you staff and perseverance. The Blackthorn as it name implies, is a thorny tree, this is for its protection and it also protect all who use this protection for the safety of their nests, their homes, and in caterpillars, their metamorphosis into beautiful butterflies, and in this way the Blackthorn will protect you in your infancy of your new found creativity, and during your metamorphosis into the wonderful being you are, so that you may bask in the warm rays of the sun in harmony with mother nature.

The Celtic other use for the Staff or walking stick or Shillelagh was as a Cudgel combining supportiveness and a way of fending off people in self defence, this you can remember when anybody tries to beat you down or suppress those new creative thoughts and aspirations, a the Blackthorn also is sin ominous with standing up for ones rights, assertiveness and obstinacy, which is not a bad thing in rebuilding ones life.

The Celtic People also believed that the thorns on the tree provided protection for Ghosts, particularly in Ireland, so the tree can also protect you for your ghosts, and lay them to rest.

In Irish stories Blackthorn could be used in spells of protection, heroes were aided, if they threw a twig of Blackthorn afternoon, it would take root and form an impenetrable hedge or woods, thwarting the pursuing giant, in the same way the blackthorn can protect you by putting an impenetrable barrier between your new beginnings and that was behind you.

In England Witches would carve the Norse Rune Thorn on a Blackthorn Stave for protection. Traditionally, Blackthorn is used in protection against evil, creating boundaries, purifying, confronting our own dark side. Black thorn dispels negativity, toxins, old wounds and impurities. It is used in exorcisms, and associated with chthonic and protective deities. All these assosciations will help you reinforce and protect your way forward along your path toward your aims and self belief.

Blackthorn Trees and Shrubs are said to be held sacred by fairies. The Luantishees are the Blackthorn Fairies, who guard the trees, November 11th is their festival. All thorny trees and shrubs are said to serve as meeting places for fairies. Kindling a fire of thorn wood atop a fairy mound is also said to force a fae to return a stolen child.Let this be your sacred and the meeting place of your thoughts to decide which path to follow to achieve everything have ever wished for.

A Blackthorn Stave in the creation of a Sprite or Spirit Trap, it is used in combination with copper wire, which must not have been used for the carrying of electricity. The copper wire is bound to the stave with red thread and the stave is marked with a Dag or Rune. The procedure is carried out mainly for its symbolic value in religious tradition. The single traps are used at night, when the trap is set at the entrance to a home, church, graveyard or other location were sprite disturbances are taking place. To attract the troublesome entity, a cleft Blackthorn Stave with a lighted candle is place in front of the trap.

After the Sprite has been captured, it is removed from the location, and the red thread is cut with a consecrated knife, the thread is then placed into a prepared witch bottle. If the bottle has been prepared to imprison the sprite or spirit, a spell is recited while the thread is placed into it. Finally the bottle is corked and sealed with red wax before being buried. A Blackthorn or Thorn Bush or Tree is planted on the site. The witch bottle is a very old spell device that has stood the test of time. The spell is a magical act intended to cause an effect on reality using supernatural means of liturgical or ritual nature.

In this same way if your sprite or spirit comes back to bother you, simply wind some red cotton or material around your door handle before retiring to bed and in the morning cut the tie and put in a pot and bury it, if you are not able to bury the item, caste it far away.If you believe your sprite is within you loosely tie a wrist or ankle band of red material before going to bed, and in the morning draw off, do not cut the cloth whole and either put it in securely fastened pot, or if you have a fire, cast it into the fire and the sprite will disappear.

It is said that if a witch’s bottle is ever found and opened, a very angry sprite or spirit will escape.

The Blackthorn being a tree is an iconic image of heraldry and of symbolic significance in various cultures throughout the world. It represents many things, including the Great Mother in her nourishing, sheltering and caring form, as well as a sacred spot of attainment and Spiritual Enlightenment. If you are in the countyside of find a Blackthorn Tree or Bush, you may have one in your hedge, park, just take a few moments to draw in the energy given off from the Blackthorn. PLease take care not to be be spiked by the thorns. Thet are best viewed in flower or with there slow berries.

Being deeply rooted into the evolutionary psychology of our race as well as earth’s powers, it draws water from the soil and stretches up to the heavens and eternity, acting as a world axis. In occult or Gnostic circles, it is seen as being emblematic of the axis mundi, the world pillar, and the centre of the earth itself. It is closely linked to the symbolism of the pillar and the mountain, as well as connotations of a phallic representation, best signified by the ancient usage of obelisks for ritual and ceremonial purposes. It serves as an intermediary icon of the mysterious dimensions between the realm of the Gods and men. A common Shamanic concept has the seeker or healer using the tree in order to transverse the physical realm and bring back secrets from hidden dimensions. Use this power to follow your Spiritual Path, and seek the power and energy to sustain and grow your spirituallity and let it become firmly rooted and grow strong inside you, let it be you staff, your help and guidance and your link to spiritual guidance and reassurance whenever called upon.Let your spirituality lead you to a better and enriched way of living.

Four Major Phases of Tumor Formation

To summarize, there are four major phases of tumor formation. Each phase can take years to complete. The first one alone usually takes anywhere from 15 to 30 years.

The first phase occurs when normal cells mutate into tumor cells and begin dividing out-of-control. This may take place over successive generations of cells. When just the right mutations occur, the cells will divide and grow to a small tumor.

The second phase is called Carcinoma in situ. This phase is classified by the presence of a cancerous tumor that has not yet invaded other tissues. This phase usually lasts between 5-10 years and is limited by the nutrient flow to the tumor. If blood vessels can be induced to grow into the tumor (angiogenesis), the tumor will progress to the next phase, called the invasive stage.

The invasive phase can happen rapidly, requiring only a few months. However, in some cases it may take up to five years. This phase is dependent on the ability of the tumor to invoke nearby blood vessels to grow toward it and provide it with nutrients – commonly referred to as angiogenesis.

Metastasis, or dissemination to other tissues if the final phase. This phase has the same time period as the invasive phase, ranging from a few months to five years.

At each phase, the cancer can either progress further or altogether diminish. If you add each phase up, the average for the cell mutating events and cancer diagnosis is 20-50 years apart. This is why cancer mostly affects older people. Actually, half of all cancers are diagnosed after the age of 65.

A Few Checks and Balances…

– Mutations must occur, but the cell must still live and divide.

– DNA repair mechanisms must not be activated.

– Our own immune system must not find the tumor and destroy it.

– The tumor must get enough nutrients to continue to grow.

Mono Treatment – Diet

During mono treatment a healthy, immune-boosting diet is essential for a good recovery.

In the initial, acute stage of mononucleosis, appetite is often poor. Symptoms like nausea, a swollen throat, fever and fatigue make eating difficult. In these cases mono treatment should focus on a liquid-only diet. A liquid-only diet allows the gastrointestinal tract to rest so energy is averted to healing the body.

Liquids you could try might include broth, soups, herb teas, lemon drinks and pure water. Freshly squeezed vegetable juices based around lots of green vegetables like celery, cucumber and spinach are very cleansing during mono treatment. You can add a small amount of carrot, parsnip or beet root to sweeten your juice, or add some ginger or garlic to give it a warming effect. I always recommend that you water down your juice (about 50:50) so it is not too concentrated.

Garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, turmeric, chili peppers, and onions are great to add to your teas, soups and juices due to their powerful health benefits on the throat and respiratory system.

During mono treatment you will also need to eliminate your intake of all dairy products and grains, because they may contribute to mucus in the body. In addition, avoid coffee, sugar, alcohol, soft drinks and artificial colors and flavorings.

When you are feeling stronger and your appetite is starting to return you can start to reintroduce some more foods. Start with fresh lightly steamed vegetables and heavier soups. If these are tolerated then you can add back some raw vegetables and salads. Eat small quantities of fresh fruits like pineapple, paw paw and kiwi fruit which are anti-inflammatory in nature. Nuts and seeds, eggs, legumes, free-range meats, poultry and fish can then be introduced. As your appetite improves you can increase your portion size.

Once you are over the acute stage of mononucleosis you need to continue your mono treatment with a long term healthy diet. For optimal immunity, make sure that you get a good supply of fresh, ripe vegetables and fruits, quality protein and essential fats. Excess grains, processed foods, alcohol and coffee should be minimized.

If you feed your body correctly during mono treatment, it is unlikely that your illness will progress into a secondary infection like bronchitis, pneumonia or a more serious condition like chronic fatigue. You will quicken your recovery and keep this nasty illness at bay for life.

Adrenal Fatigue: How it Affects Your Life and How to Heal it

80 % of American society is afflicted with adrenal fatigue at some point in their life yet most are unaware of the problem. They simply know they don’t feel well or perhaps symptoms lead them to explore other disorders; we do know that often symptoms denote multiple possibilities and sometimes overlap disorders. Do these symptoms apply to you?

♠ Weight gain, especially in waist or stomach, and it stubbornly sticks to you

♠ Fatigue ~ lack of energy ~ lethargy

♠ Insomnia

♠ Brain fog ~ concentration difficulty

♠ Morning sluggishness ~ need for stimulants to get you moving

♠ Constipation

♠ Nervousness ~ anxiety

♠ Mild depression

♠ Dry skin and hair

♠ Arthritis

♠ Pain in upper back and neck

♠ Unexplained hair loss

♠ Cold hands and feet ~ or just plain cold

♠ Allergies ~ both inhalants and food

♠ Low body temperature

♠ Reduced sex drive

If you said “yes” to several of these symptoms there is a strong possibly that you are experiencing adrenal fatigue. If you said “yes” to half or more, your adrenals are fatigued.

What is adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is simply the allowance of stressors to influence and perhaps take control over your life. Stress is a big issue in most people’s lives and all too often the person has no idea how to deal with the stress. The result is adrenal fatigue as well as many other imbalances within the body, mind and spirit of the individual. Stress has many faces such as:

Anger ~ fear ~ guilt

Not enough sleep ~ chronic fatigue

Chronic illness

Chronic infection

Too much exercise

Improper diet

Gluten intolerance

Worry ~ anxiety ~ continually focusing on negative aspects and events

Exposure to large amount of toxins

Excess sugar

Digestive imbalances

What happens when your body becomes stressed?

Your adrenal glands are located directly above the kidneys which are found in the back of you right above your waist. In this tiny gland is the most abundant hormone in your body – DHEA. Cortisol (often referred to as the hormone of death) is also found in your adrenal glands. The adrenals main purpose is to be a stress regulator. Here’s an example.

You are traveling down the road and someone pulls out in front of you. You slam on your brakes, maybe say a few choice words, and are grateful that you avoided an accident. In the meantime you had probably stopped breathing momentarily, at the very least you only took shallow quick breaths. Your heart probably began racing and felt like it would pop out of your chest and maybe even your head started throbbing. What you probably don’t know is that your cortisol also shot up to accommodate for the demand put on your adrenals. This is what we term flight and flight, and it is beneficial when something like this occurs. However, when our life becomes a continual fight and flight atmosphere, we can easily develop adrenal fatigue. The adrenals kicking in for a sudden trauma is meant to be temporary. From the stressors already mentioned, it is usually a combination of various stressors that create this syndrome for you.

As a result of continuous stress to your body, your cortisol remains elevated and thus the symptoms begin. It is very likely that at the same time your DHEA is declining, and if you are 40 or older, it is doing so naturally. We know that hormones do decline with age, but if we are stressed they will decline more rapidly. All of this not only tears down your health but ages you faster both internally and externally. And who wants to age faster!

As a result of experiencing adrenal fatigue, most individuals reach for stimulants to get and keep them going – coffee, sodas, pills, alcohol, chocolate, nicotine, etc. They are masking their problem and it continues to grow worse without their awareness due to the cover-up.

Here’s the importance of cortisol.

It normalizes blood sugar ~ When a stressor occurs the cortisol increases the blood sugar level in your body, working with the pancreas to provide enough glucose to provide energy for your cells. Continuous increased blood sugar levels creates a blood sugar imbalance which can lead to multiple physical disorders such as diabetes.

Anti-inflammatory ~ Cortisol is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. When trauma happens to our body the cortisol is released to reduce the swelling and repair the injury. Too much trauma produces too much cortisol. There are many disorders associated with inflammation such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis.

Immune system supporter ~ Cortisol influences most cells that participate in your immune system’s regulation. Chronic high levels of cortisol suppress the immune system allowing an individual to be more susceptible to illness, especially to viruses.

Stress balancer ~ Cortisol helps to balance your stress reactions, but if stress becomes chronic then it can no longer maintain the balance. The result can be weight gain that is difficult to reduce, high blood pressure, estrogen dominance that can lead to uterine fibroids and even breast cancer, and much more.

So you can see how easy it is to find yourself in the throws of adrenal fatigue and yet suspect other disorders. I personally believe, as do many health practitioners, that it is imperative to repair your adrenals no matter what illness or disorder you have because the adrenals will always be affected if there is imbalance anywhere in your body.

Steps to repair your adrenals

1. First of all understand this. Traditional medicine testing cannot detect adrenal fatigue unless it has become severe. That’s why so many physicians tell their patients – and you may have been one of them – to go home and relax or give them a prescription drug for anxiety to help. That’s simply a band-aid approach and resolves little if anything, and it definitely doesn’t cure the problem.

2. However, there is a saliva test that holistic practitioners and doctors are using that has excellent results in measuring your cortisol and DHEA levels. It is called the ASI, or Adrenal Stress Index. Although nothing is ever 100% accurate, this has very high accuracy. The reason is that your saliva is part of your tissues and can relate to the lab technicians what is being absorbed within your body as well as the level of your hormones.

3. Realize that all physical disorders have emotional cores. You may be able to “fix”

your adrenal problem temporarily by making some lifestyle changes, but if you don’t release the negative emotion that underlies your stress it will simply come back again, perhaps in another form. We are multidimensional beings and it requires a balance in all four areas to be healthy. One tire on your car can cause quite an imbalance if it loses enough air. So it is with your body and health.

4. Remove your stressors. You might be laughing right now as you’re thinking I don’t know what your life is like and what you’re going through. You might be surprised just how much I do understand. And yes, you can successfully become stress free. You see, I’m a recoveree of adrenal fatigue and had been experiencing it for decades but didn’t know it. I gave birth to and raised five children, worked all through those years, was driven to succeed in my work, began having big health challenges, divorced, experienced major financial struggles for several years, found myself in a potentially destructive business arrangement from which I finally detached, and so on. We all have our stories but you don’t have to stay in them. I left my old story and created a life free from stress and its affects on me. You can do it too! The key is in how you respond to the stressors. If you want to know more about how to live stress-free, click on my website on the home page, and order my free eBook entitled Stress Free Living. There are many other products and services listed on my website that may help you as well.

5. Get enough sleep! This can be a real problem for many people. So many come into our health store begging for something so they can sleep. Insomnia often accompanies

adrenal fatigue yet it is most necessary for repair. 7-8 hours or more are necessary for healing and the adrenals repair most from 11pm – 1am. (some say the repair begins at 10 pm) So that means that you night owls might need to make some changes. I had to do this as well. Melatonin, 5HTP, herbs, magnesium, warm baths, reading before retiring, working with a coach to learn new ways to respond to your stress, listening to soft music, are all possible was to help you sleep. It is also essential to clean your liver and digest your food well to sleep well. Guides for this are mentioned below.

6.Change your diet. Follow these guidelines to allow for adrenal repair:

♦ Eliminate sugar, caffeine, and alcohol – these fight against adrenal repair

♦ Consider adding salt to you diet – but only Himalayan or Celtic types

♦ Consume many organic vegetables, at least 6 every day

♦ Consider juicing veggies several times a week for cleansing your body

♦ Drink 1 mug of warm water on empty stomach every morning with ½ organic

lemon squeezed in it – cleanses the liver easily and naturally

♦ Exercise, but only moderately at first. Rule of thumb is to stop if tired.

♦ Eat regularly, at least three meals per day – may benefit from 5-6 small ones

♦ Eat plenty of good protein as amino acids found in protein help restore adrenals

♦ Progesterone cream – promotes healthy adrenals and thyroid glands, helps to

balance estrogen overload

♦ Supplementation – this is an individualized process – there is no one protocol that works for everyone and what works for one can be toxic to another. Below are some suggestions but please do your own research and seek the help of qualified

practitioners for your repair process.

Note: When your adrenals are fatigued the immediate craving is for sugar, yet ironically it is the worst thing you could consume as it furthers the adrenal fatigue. Individuals who crave sugar or carbohydrates often find that adrenal fatigue is a root cause of their cravings.

Adrenals will be better served with organic vegetables, the darker and brighter the better, plenty of good quality protein to ensure enough amino acids, plenty of water and the inclusion of beneficial oils like refined, organic extra virgin coconut oil. This kind of coconut oil can actually cause weight loss and provide the good fats necessary for the conversion of ALL hormones in your body.

Supplementation that can support adrenal repair:

♦ Vitamin C and bioflavonoids – 1000 mg to 5000

mg daily, divided doses

♦ B-5, pantothenic acid, or panethine gelcaps – 1000 – 1500 mg daily, divided

♦ Vitamin E, mixed tocopherols – 400 iu’s

daily, one gelcap

♦ Magnesium – citrate good form, 500 mg or

more daily, powdered form good

♦ Natural progesterone cream – men can also

Also may be beneficial:

♦ B complex, 50 – 100 mg 2 x’s daily

♦ Multi-vitamin/mineral – once daily

♦ Antioxidants

♦ DHEA – be careful with this, especially

women, as only a little is needed to help

♦ Natural hydrocortisone – caution here as

well – prescription only

Additional suggestions:

Since most individuals with adrenal fatigue have compromised digestion, it is vital that they can digest food and supplement intake properly and have a good intestinal flora balance. You might want to include the following in your daily diet to assist in adrenal restoration:

♦ Probiotics – 2 – 3 times per day

♦ Digestive enzymes – with every meal

♦ Eating raw fermented vegetables – daily

Note: Often less is best, at least to begin. If your body is not functioning optimally, it may be necessary to introduce supplements and changes slowly so as not to “shock” the body or overload it. Of course, in the case of serious disease, it is often beneficial to saturate the body quickly to detoxify and ensure healing. Baby steps do best and know that adrenal restoration takes time, from 3 months to as much as two years, according to the severity of your adrenal fatigue.

5 Healthy Tips for Bronchial Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

With the holiday season fast approaching and with added travel and holiday stress, a change in sleeping behavior may affect your asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Here are some helpful tips this holiday season that may help prevent exacerbation of asthma or COPD. The common symptoms of bronchial asthma are nighttime cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. The common exacerbation cause of bronchial asthma is respiratory tract infection, postnasal drip, gastroesophagel reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn.

1. Sleep adequately. You will want to sleep a little longer and go to bed earlier by the start of the holiday season if you feel there will be sleep deprivation on the weekend if you are planning to stay up late. Maybe, if this is the case, you will want to start going to bed a half an hour to an hour earlier from now on so that it helps the immunity and prevents infection.

2. Avoid junk food. Needless to say, it is very tempting but it may be a good idea to replace junk food snacks with good and healthy foods, thereby preventing bronchospasm, mucus formation, and nighttime symptoms of bronchial asthma. Cookies, pasties, etc., have refined sugar, which cause mucus formation and bronchospasm. Making sure a high-fiber diet is continued during the holiday season so there are normal bowel movements every day in the morning helps to prevent bronchospasm. If one is not getting a high-fiber diet regularly, he/she may help with starting one. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables helps. Apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, carrots, cabbage, and spinach to name a few, are good sources of healthy fiber. Understanding the basics of the diet and what needs to be avoided on a regular basis may help prevent exacerbation of asthma. Avoid dairy products such as cold food, ice cream (produces bronchospasm and mucus), bananas (increases sputum production and chest congestion), cold water or ice water or ice drinks also increase bronchospasm and replace them with room temperature water or drinks. Just like cold weather makes asthma worse, so do cold liquids and drinks which create winter inside the body. It slows stomach digestion, producing bronchospasm. We have seen in our practice that stopping this has decreased the need of a rescue inhaler by more than 50% in about 6 weeks in many asthma patients and in many after only a few months. It may help if one is looking for ideas that help to decrease the need for rescue inhaler use.

3. Compliance with the treatment of bronchial asthma. Continue the regular inhalers, nebulizers and other medication as prescribed by your health care professional. Understand the correct technique of the inhaler or nebulizer. Get familiar with the medication and its normal dose, the maximum dose that is allowed and its common side effects. If you feel that you are getting any of the side effects, let your doctor know about it. Make sure you rinse your mouth after the use of the inhaler or nebulizer to prevent oral thrush. Use the peak flow meter to check the asthma symptoms and keep a log of it. If one is a smoker than smoking cessation is the key to improve health, otherwise bronchial asthma or COPD will not get better and with time it will get worse. Inhalers or medication will not work with ongoing smoking. A person can end up with respiratory failure and be on a ventilator with ongoing smoking if asthma or COPD exacerbation cannot be controlled with nebulizers, steroids and antibiotics. Smoking cessation is key.

4. Exercise. Regular exercise helps to prevent the bronchospasm and chest congestion. In patients with exercise-induced bronchospasm, they may need to take the inhaler prior to work out. This is equally true for the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as bronchial asthma patients.

5. Yoga and Pranayama. Pranayama are the breathing exercises of yoga. One may learn Pranayama and many other exercises of yoga to reduce stress from a local yoga instructor, which may help prevent bronchospasm, chest congestion, and nighttime wheezing. Yoga exercise is very different from a regular work out or aerobic exercise. After yoga, one may feel more relaxed and calm. Both exercises have their own merits and limitations and based on one’s personality one may favor one over the other. The goal is to do one or both than none at all.

In our practice, we have patients with severe persistent bronchial asthma symptoms on round-the-clock inhalers and nebulizers with multiple modalities of treatment and exercise. Yoga has shown such improvement in some patients that they do not need a need of inhalers or nebulizers. The point here is to say that yoga exercise and/or other regular or aerobic exercises do help if one does them regularly and helps the asthma symptoms as well as overall health when done regularly along with medical treatment.

Massage and Contraindications

Having a massage can provide great benefit for most people, most of the time. However there are occasions for which massage is just not appropriate. When this occurs then massage is referred to as contraindicated which means that a person may have symptoms, a condition or disease where a massage on the whole body (or a certain part of the body) is just not the right thing to do.

Sometimes these contraindications can be so absolute that a massage is not appropriate at all. There may even be other conditions that the massage therapist should know about the negative side effects that the massage could cause but are contraindicated massage techniques even though modified massage applications can have very positive effects.

When a client partakes in his or her first interview, the therapist will ask pointed and specific questions about the client’s health to deduce whether or not they have any contraindications. If that particular client is under strict care from a physician then the therapist should consult with the doctor before undergoing any massage treatment for the client.

Some of these major contraindications would be:

An Abnormal body temperature: if the presenting client has a fever greater than 37.5 deg C, the massage should not be given. Mostly, fevers mean that a person body is trying to locate and dispose of an invading organism. The human body will activate its defensive measures so it can isolate and take of the ailment. A massage may halt or hinder this process.

Infectious and acute disease: Clientele that have contracted any infectious diseases like typhoid, influenza, or any other sort of severe cold should not be administered massage treatment. A client who receives a massage while they have an acute viral infection may have their illness intensified, whilst there is also a risk that the therapist may contract the virus.

Inflammation: This type of situation is very common. If an individual has some acute inflammation, a massage will only add to the irritation and further the spread of the inflammation. If you have sustained an injury in the past twenty-four hours like an ankle sprain or hurt something in your back, then you should submit yourself to the first aid principle of RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).

It is also advisable at this point to make a call to your doctor. Receiving a massage to an inflamed area will only cause you more harm.

(nb, you should apply ice in fifteen-minute intervals- homemade ice packs of ice cubes and a towel will work as well as a commercial one. You do not want to put the ice pack directly to the skin or let it sit on the area for long periods.)

Even though massaging directly on that are will be contraindicated, it may be very beneficial to a person to massage not on the area but around that area so that you can relax the muscles and prompting the body to naturally heal itself. After a person has had the inflammation subside after 72-96 hours, having a massage can dramatically help a person’s mobility of joints as well as helping reduce scar tissue forming.

Varicose veins: When the valves of your veins have a break down it is due to back pressure causing the veins to stick out and bulge. You can usually see this happen in your legs because of gravity, this occurs when the legs or crossed or are put in other sitting positions that hinders blood circulating to your legs. Standing for a long time will also do this and add to it. Women in pregnancy can experience this from pressure on the veins of the pelvic region and can cause varicose veins.

Massaging legs which have large bulging varicose veins has the risk of releasing blood clots in the body’s circulatory system and massaging these areas is contraindicated.

Osteoporosis: This condition in its later stages can cause bones to become extremely brittle which can easily be broken or cracked. Before you start massaging a person afflicted with this condition it is advisable that the client speak with their doctor on this matter to see if this would worsen their condition or not.

High Blood Pressure: If you happen to have a client who has or has had high blood pressure, then that person’s physician should be consulted before undergoing massage therapy. Massage therapy can actually help reduce some of the hypertension that usually accompanies high blood pressure. You will usually not have to worry about massaging a person with a low blood pressure but you will want to be careful since this can cause some clients to feel dizzy after the therapy because of a drop in their blood pressure

Other contraindications: There are a plethora of different contraindications for getting a massage. The guidelines for this are straightforward enough- you do not want your therapist administering the massage to worsen any medical condition you may have, and you do not want to give anything contagious to your massage therapist. Please consult your doctor before receiving massage therapy if you are at all unsure on this issue.

Other conditions can include:

1. Fracture, burns, or bleeding

2. Blood Clots

3. Opened sores or lesions

4. Systemic infections

5. Cancer

There have been cases with women during their period that have received massage therapy within the first few days of their menstruation noticing the flow of blood a lot heavier than normal.

There is some debate on the issue of massage therapy being contraindicated during the first trimester of pregnancy. Usually, if there are not any underlying medical problems and the pregnancy is moving, as it should without history of miscarriage, then receiving massage therapy from a professional is ok. Please take up any doubts on this issue which your doctor or health care professional.
