Most of us know that there are some human foods our pets shouldn’t eat. Keeping our cats away from alcohol, for example, is a no-brainer. But did you know that onion powder can cause anemia in cats and dogs? Because of their different metabolisms, many common foods that are safe for human consumption are not safe for your cat. Reactions can range from upset stomachs to severe illness or death.

To help keep your kitty safe you need to know which foods to avoid. The following list spotlights eight common foods your cat should never eat:

Baby Food

It’s hard to imagine that a food that’s safe enough for a baby’s tender tummy would hurt our fur-kids. But what makes baby food so dangerous for cats is that it might contain onion powder (see below) which could lead to anemia. Also, baby food doesn’t meet your cat’s nutritional needs, and could result in malnutrition if she eats too much of it.

Chocolate

Most people know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but many of us don’t realize that it’s harmful for cats as well. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical compound that humans can eat safely. But cats and dogs metabolize theobromine more slowly; as a result, even small amounts of the compound can lead to theobromine poisoning, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excitability, panting, abnormal heart rate, tremors, seizures – and even death. Theobromine poisoning is treatable if caught early enough. But to be safe, keep chocolate away from your kitty.

Coffee and Tea

Caffeine is toxic to both cats and dogs, and there’s no antidote. According to ProVet Healthcare, it only takes about 8 teaspoons of coffee to potentially fatally poison a cat that weighs 3 kilograms (that’s about 6.6 lbs). Signs of caffeine poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, panting, hyperactivity, restlessness, muscle tremors, increased or decreased heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, increased body temperature. But most scary of all: caffeine poisoning can lead to seizures, coma and death.

Grapes and Raisins

Scientists aren’t sure exactly just what substance is in grapes and raisins that make them so toxic for our pets, but according to the ASPCA Poison Control Center, dogs who’ve eaten large amounts of grapes and raisins have suffered renal (kidney) failure. Although it’s unclear what effect grapes have on cats, to be on the safe side the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center “advises not giving grapes or raisins to any pets in any amount.”

Onions and Garlic

Raw, powdered and uncooked onions and garlic are especially harmful to cats because they damage red blood cells, which could cause anemia. Not only does anemia make your kitty pale and lethargic, it can be a life threatening illness.

Spinach

The jury’s still out on whether or not spinach is bad for cats, but scientists do know that spinach leaves contain a small amount of calcium oxalates (a chemical compound that makes needle-shaped crystals), which is a major component in kidney stones. If your cat eats enough spinach, it could lead to crystals in her urine. Cats with a history of urinary problems such as infections, crystaluria and kidney disease, should definitely avoid eating spinach.

Unripe Tomato

Everyone knows that tomatoes are good for humans. But did you know that they can be toxic to cats? Tomatoes are a member of the deadly nightshade plant family and contain a poisonous alkaloid called, solanine. Solanine is toxic to humans too. But you have to eat it in large amounts for it to hurt you. That’s why you shouldn’t eat green potatoes – a potato that has gone green has higher levels of solanine inside it. And it can make you sick, causing a bevy of symptoms that range from nausea, diarrhea and vomiting to hallucinations, paralysis and in the worst cases, death. Yeast Dough

Raw or uncooked yeast dough should never be fed to your cat. What makes it so dangerous? Yeast (the single-celled fungi that causes bread to rise) isn’t toxic per se, but if your cat eats the raw dough, it might continue to rise inside your kitty’s stomach. And you can imagine what that could lead to: painful bloating, gas, and in the worst-case-scenario, possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

How to Regrow Hair Damaged by Hair Extensions

Hair weaves and extensions when worn frequently can cause thinning and other hair loss conditions such as traction alopecia. Depending on the method of attachment, the damage caused could be anything from moderate to severe.

Hair weaves based on the cornrow or track method when worn regularly can lead to traction alopecia because of how tight the cornrows are braided. The weight of the hair sewn on makes things worse and adds further strain to the hair roots, making them weaker and causing them to fall out before their natural growth phase is complete.

Hair weaves are also applied using a purpose made adhesive called bonding glue which is usually anti fungal to prevent infections like ring worm on the scalp while the weave is being worn. Bonding glue is not to be confused with the adhesives used to attach lace wigs. Hair bonding glue can be black or white and is of a much thinner consistency than the silicon based adhesives used for lace wigs. The primary ingredients in it are rubber latex and sodium polyacrylate.

When using bonding glue, the hair is parted in the position where the weft is to be attached, then the glue is applied to the hair weft before being pressed against the scalp in the desired position. An oil based remover is usually required to break the bond of the glue in order to remove it safely. The oil based remover should be applied and allowed to sit for at least 20 minutes before attempting to remove the hair weft.

Acidity is quite a simple problem when it begins, but it can get out of hand easily if not taken seriously. It is a common ailment and results from a wrong diet. Some home remedies to treat and prevent acidity –

i. Mix 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp ajwain seeds. Roast them on a low flame. Add a pinch of hing (asafetida) and salt and stir for a minute. Grind to a powder when cool and store. Mix 1/2 tsp of powder with 1 teaspoon of curd. Eat twice a day for quick relief.

ii. Pineapple acts as a tonic and relieves digestive disorders. Half a glass of fresh pineapple juice should be taken after a meal for treating and preventing acidity.

iii. Eat almonds to give relief to symptoms of acidity.

iv. Chewing of a carrot increases saliva and quickens digestion by supplying the digestive system with necessary enzymes, minerals and vitamins. The juice of carrot is also beneficial.

v. A very simple remedy for acidity is thin butter-milk mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper powder. For better results, an equal quantity of cumin (jeera) powder and rock salt is to be added to the buttermilk.

vi. A piece of jaggery or gur after lunch and dinner prevents acidity.

vii. Take one piece of clove and suck it slowly. This will give you relief from acidity.

viii. Eat a cup of vanilla ice cream or drink a glass of cold milk to get heartburn and acidity relief within minutes

How Is CLEAR Scoliosis Treatment Different From Schroth Scoliosis Treatment

The Schroth Physiotherapeutic Method was developed in the 1920’s by Katharina Schroth who essentially had no formal training and was a scoliosis patient that struggled with spinal bracing both physically and psychologically. She discovered that breathing exercises for scoliosis and her position of her body could improve the shape of her scoliosis spine. She later developed an official methodology with formal training requirements and founded her clinic in Bad Sobernheim, Germany in 1961 which still exists today. Many physical therapists have been trained to provide the Schroth method to scoliosis patients either at an intensive level many hours a day over the course of weeks or at an expanded care program with homecare over the course of months. The Schroth method is often an adjunct to spinal bracing and most often prescribed with the Chaneau brace essentially a guided growth rigid orthosis designed by Dr. Manuel Rigo of Barcelona, Spain.

The foundation of the Schroth method is breathing combined with postural positioning. The theory is that if a scoliosis patient learns how to position their body and consciously controls this it will be able to correct their existing deformity at least partially. In addition breathing air into the shallow areas of the rib deformation termed rotational angular breathing will also create corrective shape changes in the ribcage. There are published case studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of this program. The case studies presented were of patients that had followed extreme regiments of exercises and were supervised and instructed one on one for hours at a time over the course of 4 to 6 weeks while in Germany. The post x-rays and posture were taken following these extremely intense sessions and certainly demonstrate positive changes.

The Schroth program uses conscious effort to self correct your scoliosis, a noble idea and certainly one that has existed for close to 100 years with some success. The simple fact is that exercise empowers the patient with scoliosis to do something where as the orthopedic community relies on bruit force and an ideology that we will fix it for you with a rigid orthosis or with titanium rods. I think if a patient were to workout 6 hours a day 7 days a week for a year or more doing corrective postural positions and breathing exercises they would probably see some improvement and definitely be better off than wearing a brace or fusing the spine.

The fundamental difference between the CLEAR scoliosis treatment system is that CLEAR uses a two step protocol. The first step is decrease soft tissue resistance via continuous passive motion combined with traction de-rotation forces to disengage elastic deformation from soft tissue adapting to the scoliosis followed by a second step call neuromuscular reeducation which uses weight added to the spine in various locations to influence a reactive change directed by the brain under subconscious control to alter the firing of intrinsic muscles(deep layer muscles) in order to change the neural output to that muscle which alters muscle tone. I realize that was a mouthful but in simpler terms CLEAR is fundamentally different because the exercise is directed by the subconscious righting reflexes and not by conscious effort which only effects larger more superficial muscle groups that have to be continuously worked in order to alter body position. CLEAR was developed by doctors that specialize in spinal rehabilitation who were looking for something that took less effort, time, and created more permanent reductions.
