Eight Foods Your Cat Should Never, Ever Eat

Most of us know that there are some human foods our pets shouldn’t eat. Keeping our cats away from alcohol, for example, is a no-brainer. But did you know that onion powder can cause anemia in cats and dogs? Because of their different metabolisms, many common foods that are safe for human consumption are not safe for your cat. Reactions can range from upset stomachs to severe illness or death.

To help keep your kitty safe you need to know which foods to avoid. The following list spotlights eight common foods your cat should never eat:

Baby Food

It’s hard to imagine that a food that’s safe enough for a baby’s tender tummy would hurt our fur-kids. But what makes baby food so dangerous for cats is that it might contain onion powder (see below) which could lead to anemia. Also, baby food doesn’t meet your cat’s nutritional needs, and could result in malnutrition if she eats too much of it.

Most people know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but many of us don’t realize that it’s harmful for cats as well. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical compound that humans can eat safely. But cats and dogs metabolize theobromine more slowly; as a result, even small amounts of the compound can lead to theobromine poisoning, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excitability, panting, abnormal heart rate, tremors, seizures – and even death. Theobromine poisoning is treatable if caught early enough. But to be safe, keep chocolate away from your kitty.

Coffee and Tea

Caffeine is toxic to both cats and dogs, and there’s no antidote. According to ProVet Healthcare, it only takes about 8 teaspoons of coffee to potentially fatally poison a cat that weighs 3 kilograms (that’s about 6.6 lbs). Signs of caffeine poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, panting, hyperactivity, restlessness, muscle tremors, increased or decreased heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, increased body temperature. But most scary of all: caffeine poisoning can lead to seizures, coma and death.

Grapes and Raisins

Scientists aren’t sure exactly just what substance is in grapes and raisins that make them so toxic for our pets, but according to the ASPCA Poison Control Center, dogs who’ve eaten large amounts of grapes and raisins have suffered renal (kidney) failure. Although it’s unclear what effect grapes have on cats, to be on the safe side the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center “advises not giving grapes or raisins to any pets in any amount.”

Onions and Garlic

Raw, powdered and uncooked onions and garlic are especially harmful to cats because they damage red blood cells, which could cause anemia. Not only does anemia make your kitty pale and lethargic, it can be a life threatening illness.

The jury’s still out on whether or not spinach is bad for cats, but scientists do know that spinach leaves contain a small amount of calcium oxalates (a chemical compound that makes needle-shaped crystals), which is a major component in kidney stones. If your cat eats enough spinach, it could lead to crystals in her urine. Cats with a history of urinary problems such as infections, crystaluria and kidney disease, should definitely avoid eating spinach.

Unripe Tomato

Everyone knows that tomatoes are good for humans. But did you know that they can be toxic to cats? Tomatoes are a member of the deadly nightshade plant family and contain a poisonous alkaloid called, solanine. Solanine is toxic to humans too. But you have to eat it in large amounts for it to hurt you. That’s why you shouldn’t eat green potatoes – a potato that has gone green has higher levels of solanine inside it. And it can make you sick, causing a bevy of symptoms that range from nausea, diarrhea and vomiting to hallucinations, paralysis and in the worst cases, death. Unlike humans, however, only a small amount of solanine can hurt your cat. According to FelineFuture.com, “traces of Solanin, like those found in just a 100g of cherry tomatoes, can be fatal!”

Yeast Dough

Raw or uncooked yeast dough should never be fed to your cat. What makes it so dangerous? Yeast (the single-celled fungi that causes bread to rise) isn’t toxic per se, but if your cat eats the raw dough, it might continue to rise inside your kitty’s stomach. And you can imagine what that could lead to: painful bloating, gas, and in the worst-case-scenario, possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Home Remedies for Laryngitis That Work Effectively

Do you find your voice squeaky and hoarse at times? If yes, then there can be plenty of reasons for this. This problem is called Laryngitis. Mostly people confuse it with sore throat, because it results into hoarseness or complete loss of voice due to irritation in the vocal cords.

Some of the common reasons for laryngitis are fungal infection, viral infection, inflammation of the larynx, smoking, excess alcohol drinking, various allergies and viral infection. Out of the mentioned reasons, the most common one is viral infection which is basically an upper respiratory infection as result of common cold. The other reason for this disease is voice abuse or overuse of our vocal chords, such as yelling or shouting etc.

Symptoms of short term laryngitis are sore throat, hoarse voice, cough problem, difficulty in swallowing food, swelling around the larynx, trouble in eating food, and high amount of saliva emerging from the mouth of the infected person. But, if you are suffering from chronic laryngitis, in that case, the symptoms may differ. The major indications of chronic laryngitis are viral infection, pain while breathing; especially in children, coughing out blood from mouth, inflated lymph nodes in the face, throat or chest and symptoms of flu.

Several patients prefer home remedies in comparison to medicines in case of laryngitis. Home remedies are only effective in short term laryngitis problem. For relief from chronic laryngitis, which also happens because of smoking, you must consult your physician to put an end to this trouble. Some of the best home remedies for the treatment of laryngitis are as follows-

Take care of your vocal-chord – When you come back home from work or after any other tedious job, try to give rest to your vocal chords. While talking to people at home, try to keep your voice down instead of unnecessary yelling, as it will result in inflammation of your larynx leading to laryngitis.

Quit Smoking – Smoking is one of the primary reasons behind chronic laryngitis. It not only impacts the person who is smoking cigarette, but also ill affects passive smokers. Regular smokers compulsively try to get rid of this injurious habit for their good.

Drink sufficient amount of water-If our throat remains dry most of the time, then it might result in laryngitis. Thus, in order to avoid this problem keep your throat and body hydrated, as it will not only keep laryngitis away, but will also help in reducing other skin related issues.

If an individual is infected with cold and flu, then a cup of hot tea keeps our throat warm and reduces the swollen lymph node in chest, face and throat.

Don’t consume Dehydrating Substances – If you have laryngitis during summer or humid season, then it is advisable not to consume dehydrating substances like caffeinated tea, coffee or alcohol.

Diet. Eating plenty of garlic and ginger. These food is well known as antimicrobial agents. It can help to kill the germs and soothe your membranes of the larynx.

Gargle with warm salt water several times per day (take 1/2 teaspoon salt to an 8-ounce glass of warm water). This solution will ease laryngitis.

Gargle with equal amounts of vinegar and water. Gargle four to five times per day as needed. This solution is s a well-known to kill the bacteria that has affected your larynx.

Can Nopalea Help Normalize Blood Sugars and Treat Diabetes?

Many people have asked if the Nopal Cactus and Nopalea can help with blood sugar problems, so here is some information to help.

We know from personal experience in our local Black Hills TriVita Team that those who have had different stages of diabetes and blood sugar issues who follow our directions have had great results with Nopalea.

Nopalea seems to help regulate blood sugars without the negative side effects and liver damage, which is known to be one of the primary side effects of blood sugar prescriptions.

Safety note: Do not halt prescription drug use except under the direct supervision of a naturopathic or physician.

Conventional medicine companies do not want the public to learn about nopal and nopalea because it would cost many of millions of dollars in annual profits for diabetes drug sales. The public is intentionally kept ignorant about natural treatments for diabetes as a way to maximize corporate profits.

Most doctors have never heard of nopal, nopalea nor its blood sugar balancing effects. We suggest continuing all prescribed medicines and let your doctor notice the difference and makes changes.

The use of the nopal cactus goes way back into history as a plant used by the natives cultures for treatment of various maladies. The uses of the nopal cactus to lower blood sugar levels has been well documented by many private studies. Nopal cactus parts have been used in traditional south western medicine techniques for ages, specifically treating type two diabetes. The researchers were using the broiled nopal stems and their results showed a significant drop in blood sugar levels.

In recent private studies the Nopal Cactus Fruit from the Sonoran Desert have what is believed to be the the most powerful active ingredient. These ingredients are amazing anti oxidants called betalains. While betalains are found in limited numbers in other food sources such as beets and swiss chard, only a specific member of the Nopal Cactus contain all 24 betalains.

The prickly pear cactus which is known as nopal in Mexico used to make Nopalea has been proven to give good results in these areas also. A professor of nutrition at Andrews University, Winston F. Craig, Ph.D., wrote an article titled “Cactus prickly pear helps normalize blood sugar”

It is an informative article, in this article Professor Craig states

“In Mexican traditional medicine, prickly pear cactus (nopal) is used for the treatment of diabetes and high cholesterol. The blood sugar-lowering action of nopal has been documented in a number of studies.”

You can read it online here -> http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0826/is_1_21/ai_n8563785/

Here is Professor Craig’s credentials: ->> http://www.andrews.edu/~wcraig/

Professor Craig also states”Prickly pear cactus appears to be safe when consumed as food. When used medicinally to lower blood sugar levels, it has proven itself to be trustworthy and effective for individuals with diabetes…”

In fact the specific Nopal Cactus fruit used in Nopalea has the highest concentration of betalains in any food substance tested and it is this specific fruit that is formulated into the drink Nopalea.

If regulating your blood sugars has been a problem, I suggest trying this all natural fruit juice concentration and experience wellness with so many others.

Could Your Underwear Be the Real Reason You Have Cellulite on Your Bum?

Do you wear tight underwear on a regular bases and also have cellulite around your buttocks area? Then there is a chance your underwear is to blame… yes, we said your underwear!

Unfortunately those cute tiny panties hug tightly right underneath the buttocks, choking the circulation causing dimples and restricted blood flow to the area, which is really where the problem lies. The tight side elastic that cuts across your behind leaving bluish-red welts restrict blood flow resulting in cellulite.

But the real problem happens when you’re wearing the same type of underwear when you go to bed. Wearing them during the day when you’re active still allows the blood to circulate somehow; but at night, when you’re at rest, the restricted blood flow sleeps as well, hastening cellulite formation.

The Bottom Line

You can start by wearing alternative underwear or undergarments. Avoid panties with side elastics that suffocate and leave your bum with red marks. Wearing thongs is a good idea because they don’t cover the buttocks. (I know you are thinking, hey… did my boyfriend right this… nope!) Thongs, boy shorts, or lace underwear are actual ideal as they don’t have much elastic that wraps itself around the bottom suffocating the blood flow.

Finally, when you hit the sack, you might trying sleeping in your birthday suit or wear very lose fitting pajama bottoms. Many women actually borrow your husbands, or boy friends boxer shorts. Not only are they comfortable, but they are cute and still leave you covered.

Cellulite has a number of causes but at this one is just a lifestyle problem that can be addressed by making changes in our habits, like the way we dress. It helps to know that women-who have three layers of fat above the knee compared to just one for men-are more prone to cellulite. Women try everything to help with cellulite removal, and sometimes it works well, sometimes not so well, but we can help to prevent it from happening prematurely- but when it does happen, know you are in good company as 9 out 10 women have it; skinny women, large women, and even men.

Also remember that another cause of cellulite comes with age. As we grow older, the production of estrogen decreases paving the way for fat to build up. So, as you age and adjust you may want to retire those tight underwear and opt for something that won’t restrict the blood flow from this cellulite-causing underwear.

7 Diseases Spread by Mosquitoes

No doubt, mosquitoes are such bothersome insects plaguing mankind today. With just one bite, this tiny pest can cause you trouble for a period of time.

On most cases, a mosquito bite can be harmless. Small bumps may emerge on the bitten skin, which may itch for a while and then disappear and disregarded.

However, there are times when a simple mosquito bite can result into something life-threatening. These tiny insects consume the blood of their hosts and as they fly from one victim to another, they can transmit mosquito-borne diseases. Various types of diseases can be acquired from a mosquito bite that can range from merely an annoyance to grave and alarming illnesses. Exterminating mosquitoes can be tough, but there are certain actions that you can take to protect yourself from getting bitten and refrain from having a mosquito-borne illness.

Below is a list of mosquito-borne diseases and symptoms that you should watch out for:

Zika Virus

Symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rash, pain in the joints and redness in the eyes. This disease is highly dangerous to pregnant women as it can cause birth defects such as microcephaly, which affects the head and brain.

Brazil and other South American countries are the areas where Zika virus is endemic. Up to date, there is still no known vaccine for Zika. Pregnant women should stay away from these areas to avoid coming into contact with the virus or mosquitoes carrying it.

Dengue Virus

This virus is found in many tourist spots in South America, the Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia but is rare in the United States. Rash, fever, headache, abnormal bruising and bleeding gums are the typical symptoms of this virus. There is no vaccine for Dengue and if neglected and not treated properly, this virus can cause a hemorrhagic fever that can be very fatal. It’s best to take measures to prevent mosquito bites, especially in areas frequented by the Dengue virus.

West Nile Virus

Most of the time, people do not experience symptoms from this virus. However, there are cases when this virus causes fever, joint pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and rash. On some occasion, this virus can lead to serious complications such as encephalitis and meningitis. Prevalent in almost every U.S. states, this virus, again, has no available vaccine.

Commonly found in African countries, Malaria has symptoms like headache, fever, chills and vomiting. It is rarely found in the U.S. but if you travel a lot especially in African countries, you may get infected with the disease too. If you are in a place where this virus is prevalent, it is highly recommended to sleep under a mosquito net, apply insect repellent spray or lotion and spray insecticides in the area to keep the mosquitoes away.

Yellow Fever

Jaundice is caused by yellow fever, which can make one’s skin and eyes look yellowish. In addition, symptoms like headache, backache, chills and vomiting may also be experienced. Mosquitoes carrying this disease are prevalent in South America or Africa. There is a vaccine available to fight off this disease.

Strong joint pain that in most cases may be severe that can affect one’s movement is the main symptom of Chikungunya. Rash, headache, nausea, and fatigue are other symptoms included in this disease. As there are many cases of Chikungunya in Europe and the Americas, this disease is found in Asia and India too. While many people recover from this disease, there is no known cure for Chikungunya. This disease may last for months or even years.

La Crosse Encephalitis

Most of the time, symptoms of this illness are not noticeable, but it may cause fever, headache, and nausea. There are around 100 cases of La Crosse Encephalitis reported in the US each year, mainly in the upper mid-west, mid-Atlantic and southwest.

Stay Safe

If mosquitoes are chronic in your area, guard yourself from being bitten. You should avoid areas where there’s stagnant water in which mosquitoes may breed. Try to stay indoors during the times when these insects are out the most. If you need to go out, make sure to use repellents for your protection.

When you are faced with symptoms other than the itchiness and redness from a mosquito bite, consult a doctor immediately to prevent any further complications.

Think You Have Herpes, Here’s What You Need to Look For

In case you experience tiny sores or openings in your private area and think it might be just an ingrown hair, yeast infection or even fissures around the anus, you owe it to yourself to stop and take into account the possibility of herpes. Perhaps you’ve noticed a little sore develop on your lip. How do you know or can you be sure you have herpes? Some symptoms mimic other diseases so it’s frequently tough to tell.

Oral herpes along with genital herpes are considered viruses and can be grouped with a couple of other viruses. This group includes the viruses that cause chicken pox and shingles. Also included is a virus known as Epstein-Barr. However, when people speak of herpes, they normally refer to the oral and genital strain.

There are two types of herpes. Oral herpes, often referred to as cold sores or fever blisters, are around or on the area of the mouth. This is Herpes Simplex type 1. Genital herpes, or Herpes Simplex type 2 shows up on the vaginal area, anus, upper thighs, buttocks, cervix and areas where there was broken skin during contact. Carriers sometimes don’t show symptoms yet they have the ability to pass the virus on to others.

Oral herpes normally begins with small blisters forming on the face but can occur on broken skin. More often than not it’s going to show up on your lips. Occasionally they are close to the nose or even in the nose. Inside the blisters is a clear liquid. Painful they are to say the least ending in a crusty sore that will last from seven to ten days. The good news is that there is complications medically speaking but, the personally speaking the blisters are embarrassing and very unsightly.

It doesn’t take long after you have had contact with someone carrying the virus for the symptoms to show up, usually somewhere between 2 and 20 days later. If you’ve had facial herpes, then genital herpes takes longer to show up. Be on the lookout for a tingling sensation followed by tiny red bumps appearing. This occurs at the site of infection and normally begins anywhere from two to ten days after you are exposed.

When you experience the first outbreak of herpes, you’ll find that it’s far worse than any subsequent outbreaks. This is because your body lacks the antibodies to fight the viral infection. Little bumps suddenly manifest on the skin. They are liquid filled and either painful, itchy or tingly. These blisters often burst and ooze out a clear liquid that forms a crust. You might have one blister or several clusters. After several days, the blisters clear and the outbreak is over.

Some people experience other symptoms besides the blisters. They may show signs of swollen lymph glands, have a headache, develop a fever, have muscle aches, vaginal discharge or discharge from the male organ, have burning urination or pain in the lower back, besides the burning or itching sensation in the genitals. Outbreaks may occur later at different sites since the virus travels the nerve ganglia

There is a great deal of controversy over whether you can cure herpes. The majority of the medical doctors don,t believe there is a cure for herpes just a way to mask the symptoms. Other research, however, shows conflicting evidence. It indicates that there are natural cures for herpes that actually kill the virus and leaves the individual symptom-free.

Grape Seed Oil And Eczema

Eczema is an inflammatory condition that can be triggered by many factors. This often results to itching and the appearance of small blisters on the skin’s surface. Because there is no direct cure for this, there are only various treatment methods that provide relief to its symptoms. As one of the natural ways of treating the condition, the association of grape seed oil and eczema is common.

Grape seed oil is actually naturally known to reduce inflammation. It has properties that cleanse the body from harmful free radicals and it improves circulation. But most importantly, the pairing of grape seed oil and eczema is because of the oil’s natural ability to inhibit allergic reactions.

The oil is also very important in providing moisture in treating eczema because it has the ability to rebuild cells, which can then provide remedy to the skin breakage during an eczema attack. Also, the moisture helps protect the skin from more damage.

The use of grape seed oil in eczema together is one of the natural ways to provide relief for the disturbing symptoms of the condition, but cannot promise a direct cure to it.

With the natural uses of grape seed oil and eczema [http://eczema-home-treatments.blogspot.com/2007/09/homemade-eczema-treatment.html] relieving properties on the skin, it is certainly one of the best ways to take control of the condition’s symptoms. Perhaps one day, the use of this natural product would be able to pave a way to finding a total cure for such inflammatory conditions. There are many reading materials available in the internet that tackles more on this subject. Just do your own diligence to and search for them.

How to Regrow Hair Damaged by Hair Extensions

Hair weaves and extensions when worn frequently can cause thinning and other hair loss conditions such as traction alopecia. Depending on the method of attachment, the damage caused could be anything from moderate to severe.

Hair weaves based on the cornrow or track method when worn regularly can lead to traction alopecia because of how tight the cornrows are braided. The weight of the hair sewn on makes things worse and adds further strain to the hair roots, making them weaker and causing them to fall out before their natural growth phase is complete.

Hair weaves are also applied using a purpose made adhesive called bonding glue which is usually anti fungal to prevent infections like ring worm on the scalp while the weave is being worn. Bonding glue is not to be confused with the adhesives used to attach lace wigs. Hair bonding glue can be black or white and is of a much thinner consistency than the silicon based adhesives used for lace wigs. The primary ingredients in it are rubber latex and sodium polyacrylate.

When using bonding glue, the hair is parted in the position where the weft is to be attached, then the glue is applied to the hair weft before being pressed against the scalp in the desired position. An oil based remover is usually required to break the bond of the glue in order to remove it safely. The oil based remover should be applied and allowed to sit for at least 20 minutes before attempting to remove the hair weft.

Unfortunately, even when care is taken, the bonding glue sticks to the hair and can rip it out from the roots during removal. Regular use of bonding glues lead to thinning hair throughout the head and not just in the temporal region.

If the damage caused by weaves is ignored, and weaves continue to be worn, any Traction Alopecia or thinning suffered could become permanent. Permanent hair loss can be avoided by taking a break from the weaves and allowing the scalp time to recover.

A diet rich in protein, and supplements such as MSM, Vitamin C and Zinc will help the scalp produce new healthy cells, and biotin can also help in stretching the growth phase of the hair. It is very important to note that if the scalp isn’t allowed time to recover and weaves are still being worn, trying to treat the hair and restore it to its original condition will be futile.

The supplements mentioned earlier will help to ensure that the hair is receiving adequate nutrients internally, however the same needs to be done externally. If you have bald patches or the hair loss experienced is severe, then a topical treatment like minoxidil is recommended. Minoxidil is available in 2% and 5% concentrations, the 2% concentration aimed at women. However a common complaint about the 2% concentration is that it is pretty ineffective, therefore women chose to use the 5% concentration for better results.

Using the 5% version however has its disadvantages, it can lead to unwanted facial hair, which by the way disappears once treatment is discontinued. It is not such a heavy price to pay in order to restore your hair and most times confidence.

For people who would rather avoid minoxidil all together, the Eclipta Alba plant, called Bhringaraj or Bhringraj in Ayurveda has been scientifically proven to be more effective that the 2% version of minoxidil without the side effects.

Natural Decongestants to Regulate Immune Response and Control Inflammation

Whether it’s cold and flu season or hay fever season, the sniffles, blocked noses and sinuses, watery eyes and puffiness are inevitable for those with a hypersensitive immune system. Allergies and inflammation are the result of an unbalanced immune response to relatively harmless substances and cause days or weeks of misery to sufferers.

While prescription medication can alleviate the symptoms, they can be addictive, cause side effects like drowsiness and prevent you from going about normal tasks, such as driving to the grocery store. However, there is relief for allergy sufferers in the form of natural substances and nutrients that can de-congest and clear up a blocked respiratory system.

Here are some of the substances and nutrients that act as natural decongestants:

Do you see many people recommending raw onions as a natural decongestant? Quercetin may be the key. It acts as an anti-inflammatory compound, inhibiting the manufacture and release of histamine and other inflammatory substances. It also acts as an antioxidant and reduces the need for vitamin C.

Onions, green and black tea, apples, blueberries, blackberries, grapes and cherries are some of the food sources of this compound. Scientists suspect quercetin may be partly responsible for the reduction in cancer associated with diets high in fruits and vegetables.

Derived from the stem of the pineapple plant, bromelain is one of the best natural decongestants. As a seasonal allergy treatment it is used to reduce swelling and break down mucus secretions in the sinus cavities, helping to clear congestion naturally.

It also has anti-inflammatory activity and works by blocking compounds that speed up inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties have caused it to be used in treating sports injury, trauma, arthritis, and other kinds of swelling.

Nettle tea has been a common remedy for hay fever for a long time. Around the world people have used it to treat nasal and respiratory congestion. It acts in a very similar manner pharmaceutical antihistamines.

The plant histamines in nettle compete with and replace your body’s own histamines, but are too weak to cause an allergic reaction. This activity regulates immune response to pollen and other allergens, making nettle a favored remedy for asthma and allergies. It provides great relief from hay fever and is very effective when used to treat and prevent allergies naturally.

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinale):

It cools and detoxifies the mucous membranes, making it useful in the treatment of eye and sinus inflammation. It contains anti-inflammatory flavonoids that regulate the function of certain B-cells called mast cells. These are responsible for histamine production in the nasal passages.

This wild plant is used both topically and internally, to treat conditions of the eye, such as conjunctivitis and sties. Because of its astringent action that dries up mucus, it is thought to work well in combination with nettle in breaking the allergy cycle and relieving the symptoms of congestion, coughs, and hay fever.

Used as the main ingredient in Indian curry, it is a member of the ginger family and has been used an anti-inflammatory agent by the Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of medicine. Studies have shown that turmeric and its derivative, curcumin, possess a potent effective anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties.

Vitamin C

Found in citrus fruits and certain green vegetables, Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine and a powerful antioxidant that can only be obtained through the diet. Its deficiency can lead to excess inflammation and increase asthma symptoms. It has been found in studies to drastically lower levels of markers of inflammation such as C Reactive Protein. Asthmatics require higher amounts of Vitamin C and benefit from an increased dosage. It also enhances the antihistaminic activity of quercetin.

Citrus bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids are found in several forms, including hesperidin, eriodictyl, quercetin and rutin and are present in the white part of citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapefruits. They can only be obtained through the diet and must be taken as dietary supplements. They possess natural antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy properties. They enhance the efficacy of Vitamin C and have been used to alleviate symptoms of allergies.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids such as those found in fish oil contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) known for their anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic. They reduce the production of cytokines such as interleukin-1, IL-2, and tumor necrosis factor that increase inflammation, regulate the production of immune cells and can decrease skin allergies.

Omega-6 fatty acids, like gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), found in borage seed oil and evening primrose oil, increase the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins.

A number of other nutrients and vitamins such as A, B5 (pantothenic acid), and B12 are also known to relieve allergies and inflammation. Some, such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants like CoQ10, Vitamin E and selenium, work to improve overall defenses against inflammation, while others like and ashwagandha and ginseng boost immunity in a non-specific manner.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroid Problems You Should Pay Attention To

Our thyroid gland works to produce thyroid hormone needed for our body. The Thyroid hormone controls one’s body tremendously, affecting every single cell in our body. It works like a gas pedal for our body. Because of its’ important role, it produces serious damage to one’s body functionality if the thyroid fails to do its’ job normally. Listed below are some of the most common symptoms of having or suffering from hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism, which is also known as over active thyroid, is when the thyroid gland malfunctions and starts produces excessive hormone than needed. When this happens, basically everything speeds up in your body. Hyperthyroid patients produce excessive energy for their body causing abnormal thermostat for their body. They suffers by feeling too hot even in a cold environment. They feel very uncomfortable in a warm environment and will feel very irritated. Along with this, hyperthyroid patients also perspire easily than others.

Hyperthyroid patients also experience insomnia. Because of the excessive thyroid hormone, their body cannot easily calm down. Sleep Deprivation for these patients are also faced with behavioral and emotional changes. They experience sudden mood swings, anxiety, depression, sadness and irritability. Due to this reason, patients are sometimes referred to see psychologists when it’s actually the thyroid hormone that’s causing it.

Couple other common symptoms for hyperthyroid patients are increased frequency of bowel movement, hair changes, skin changes, and weight loss. Hyperthyroid patients are faced with faster metabolic rate along with increase bowel activity leading them with abrupt weight loss up to 10- 20 pounds. Also with thyroid hormone buildup, their digestive system will not work properly to absorb certain nutrients from food. Along with this, increase palpitation causes increase in loss of moisture in skin causing sudden changes in skin pigmentation and increase of wrinkle visibility.

One of the most dangerous symptoms of hyperthyroidism is having a rapid, forceful heartbeat. The increased hormone stimulates the heart to beat faster even when patients are not exposed to any physical activities. When this symptoms is left untreated it can cause serious heart problems or weakened heart causing abrupt heart failure.

Some other physical changes patients may experience is the visible enlarged thyroid gland. Excessive stimulation in their thyroid may cause the thyroid gland to enlarge and may cause swelling in the front of their neck. This is called goiter. When this happen, one can actually see the swelling in their neck.

If you are not sure whether you are suffering from hyperthyroidism but you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms above, it is highly recommended to get your blood test done as soon as possible. If untreated, you may have to remove your thyroid gland completely.

Do I Have Bipolar Disorder? The Three Sides of Manic Depression

Are you wondering if you have bipolar disorder? Maybe you aren’t quite sure of the signs to look for, but you have a hunch that you may have manic depression. The three indicators of bipolar disorder are depression, mania, and mixed states.

1.) Mania

What is mania and what are some of the warning signs? Mania is a period of excitability that involves increased energy and a lack of sleep. You may be able to work for days on end and your productivity will go through the roof.

Unfortunately, as mania progresses, thoughts will become confused, and you won’t be able to get enough done, with thoughts and ideas flowing too fast until everything in your head becomes cluttered and frustrating.

2.) Mixed State

Anxiety is a common feeling in a mixed state, which combines features of both depression and mania at the same time. You may feel like you are having a panic attack, where you become so worried that breathing becomes difficult, and you feel like your life is out of control. Even the littlest thing can set off a chain of fear that ruins your life.

3.) Depression

Depression is marked by a lack of energy to go about your daily routine. Maybe you lose interest in hobbies, friends, or family. While you may have been the life of the party when manic, now you just want everyone to leave you alone, while you crawl up in a ball and sleep. You may also experience weight gain, despair, and a low sense of self worth.

Monophobia: Self Help Options

Monophobia is a fear of being alone; it can be a very debilitating condition. If you suffer from monophobia there are a few treatment options available, a lot of people are able to treat it themselves. Getting over monophobia is just like getting over most fears; it is simply a matter of desensitizing yourself.

The best option for dealing with monophobia on your own is to work to desensitize yourself to being alone. This is a simple matter of making an effort to spend some time by yourself. If you have a serious case of monophobia this could be a challenge so you will want to start slowly and build up to longer periods of being alone.

When you first start to desensitize yourself to being alone you will want to do it for very short periods of time, this could be as little as a couple of minutes if you are suffering from a serious case. It will take awhile to build up to the point where you can be alone for long periods of time so you will want to go slowly. In the early days you are also going to want to make sure that you not get too far away from other people. This way if you do suffer symptoms it will not take you long to get back to a place where you are not alone. Again as you get more comfortable with being alone you will be able to go further away from others.

One other thing that you are going to want to make sure of when you first start to treat your monophobia is that you will want to stay in a place that you are comfortable in. This way you are not adding another element that may increase your fear. A lot of people who suffer from monophobia are not only afraid of being alone but are also afraid of being in unfamiliar places. Again as you build up your comfort level you will be able to start going to new places.

If you are going to try to tackle monophobia on your own it is important that you are able to deal with the panic attacks that you are likely to experience at some point when you are alone. This is best done by learning to control your breathing. There are lots of places that you can learn how to do this so it is something to make sure that you do before you put yourself in a position where you are likely to have a panic attack.

Although I tend to prefer downloadable items (I don’t like to wait) the Lucinda Basset program is worth the wait. The package definitely delivers value; it is professionally put together and is quite impressive.

Ok, there’s some slick packaging… what’s it got under the hood?

The Attacking Anxiety and Depression program was developed by Lucinda Bassett and Phillip Fisher, M.D. from over 17-years of Midwest Center therapy groups.

The program is based on cognitive-behavioral modification. In a nutshell, it is intended to teach you to recognize the thoughts, behaviors, and reactions CAUSING your distress and then show you how to change these negative, anxiety-producing habits.

A lot of what has made this program so popular and effective is the way it is structured and presented.

The methodology of using an audio/video teaching format allows you to listen to the material over and over, at your own pace. The ultimate goal of the program is to teach you to rely on your own skills through the recovery.

The Lucinda Basset workbook, CDs and DVDs show you how your current thinking and reacting are causing your stress, anxiety and depression and then it shows you a different way to look at life and how to react to the stressors in your life.

The program is very deliberate, step-by-step, week-by-week, showing you how to begin dismantling your old destructive patterns and replacing them with more healthy, compassionate habits.

Attacking Anxiety and Depression is Clinically validated and used in hospitals, clinics, universities, by a network of psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, and by the number one ranked HMO in the country, Group Health.

Either Lucinda Bassett is just an incredible marketer or she actually has something “real” going… she has the second longest running infomercial of all time and has been featured on Oprah, Regis, Montel Williams, Maury Povich, The View with Barbara Walters, Reverend Schuller’s Hour of Power and has been published in Prevention, Family Circle, Longevity, The Journal of Clinical Psychology, and more.

Acidity Cure – Easy and Effective Herbal Treatments

Acidity is quite a simple problem when it begins, but it can get out of hand easily if not taken seriously. It is a common ailment and results from a wrong diet. The excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach causes acidity. Prolonged acidity can cause chronic indigestion, arthritis, gout, ulcers and even false angina pains.

Acidity tends to have a much higher incidence in highly emotional and nervous individuals. It is also more common in the developed and industrialized nations.

What are the symptoms?

The main symptoms of acidity are:

o Dyspepsia and heartburn

o Discomfort, burning sensation in the upper part of the gut area, especially after eating.

o Regurgitation of the gastric contents

o loss of appetite

o nausea, vomiting

o feeling of sickness

o flatulence accompanied by burping

o constipation

Causes of acidity:

Acidity may be caused by many conditions such as:

# Medical conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach ulcers

# Hyperthyroidism – excessive secretion of the thyroid gland.

# Anxiety, anger and stress.

# Constipation, flatulence or intestinal gases.

# Artificial stimulants or the thought of nearing the food time can create acidity.

# Excessive intake of stimulants like tea, coffee etc.

# Excessive intake of fried foods, spicy or pungent food,

# As a side-effect of some drugs used for treating other illnesses

# Overeating along with bad food combinations. Overeating puts extra load on the stomach, liver, kidneys.

# Eating too rapidly, therefore improper salivation of food.

# Excessive smoking, intake of alcohol

# Tendency to eat and drink together

# Insomnia

# Lack of exercise.

# Long gaps between meals leads to acidity, as it gives the acid in the stomach more time to act.

How is acidity treated?

Try to identify and avoid foods that disagree with the digestive system. Also, try not to eat too quickly and avoid stress.

Some people need to be given drugs to control their condition.

Medicines to treat acidity include:

o Antacids, which neutralize the acid in the stomach.

o Acid suppressants, which reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

What type of diet should be followed?

# Avoid canned and junk food, artificially ripened fruits and vegetables or those kept in cold storage. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables.

# Avoid a heavy intake of spices and aerated drinks that are highly acidic and strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones.

# Cold beverages with or after meals should be particularly avoided. Cold drinks dilute the enzymes and put stress on the digestive system. As a result, the food gets fermented leads to acidity.

# Avoid excess smoking, tea and coffee. Both nicotine and caffeine are directly related to problems of acidity. Instead, take coconut water, fresh water melon, cucumber juice and thin-skinned lemons because these are alkaline.

# Bitter gourd, amla (Indian gooseberry) juice is an excellent remedy for acidity.

# Benign lactic acid present in buttermilk, yoghurt are helpful. Raita prepared with fresh curd, grated cucumber, fresh coriander, tomato is a sure shot remedy in aiding digestion, and helps remove acidity.

# If you are overweight, lose some immediately. Those who are overweight put too much pressure on the esophageal sphincter, which leads to reflux of the contents of the stomach into the oesophagus, and heartburn follows.

# Drink plenty of water, as it aids digestion and helps flush out toxins. Eat only when hungry because digestive juices are released in the stomach only when one is hungry.

# Go green. Green leafy vegetables and sprouts contain vitamins B and E that facilitate the elimination of acids from the body.

# Get moving! Not enough physical activity means not enough sweat, which in turn results in uric acid being deposited in the body.

# Avoid stress and get adequate amount of sleep. Insomnia disturbs the digestive system.

# Bring about a change in food and habits that is conducive to overall good health.

Some home remedies to treat and prevent acidity –

i. Mix 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp ajwain seeds. Roast them on a low flame. Add a pinch of hing (asafetida) and salt and stir for a minute. Grind to a powder when cool and store. Mix 1/2 tsp of powder with 1 teaspoon of curd. Eat twice a day for quick relief.

ii. Pineapple acts as a tonic and relieves digestive disorders. Half a glass of fresh pineapple juice should be taken after a meal for treating and preventing acidity.

iii. Eat almonds to give relief to symptoms of acidity.

iv. Chewing of a carrot increases saliva and quickens digestion by supplying the digestive system with necessary enzymes, minerals and vitamins. The juice of carrot is also beneficial.

v. A very simple remedy for acidity is thin butter-milk mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper powder. For better results, an equal quantity of cumin (jeera) powder and rock salt is to be added to the buttermilk.

vi. A piece of jaggery or gur after lunch and dinner prevents acidity.

vii. Take one piece of clove and suck it slowly. This will give you relief from acidity.

viii. Eat a cup of vanilla ice cream or drink a glass of cold milk to get heartburn and acidity relief within minutes

How Is CLEAR Scoliosis Treatment Different From Schroth Scoliosis Treatment

The Schroth Physiotherapeutic Method was developed in the 1920’s by Katharina Schroth who essentially had no formal training and was a scoliosis patient that struggled with spinal bracing both physically and psychologically. She discovered that breathing exercises for scoliosis and her position of her body could improve the shape of her scoliosis spine. She later developed an official methodology with formal training requirements and founded her clinic in Bad Sobernheim, Germany in 1961 which still exists today. Many physical therapists have been trained to provide the Schroth method to scoliosis patients either at an intensive level many hours a day over the course of weeks or at an expanded care program with homecare over the course of months. The Schroth method is often an adjunct to spinal bracing and most often prescribed with the Chaneau brace essentially a guided growth rigid orthosis designed by Dr. Manuel Rigo of Barcelona, Spain.

The foundation of the Schroth method is breathing combined with postural positioning. The theory is that if a scoliosis patient learns how to position their body and consciously controls this it will be able to correct their existing deformity at least partially. In addition breathing air into the shallow areas of the rib deformation termed rotational angular breathing will also create corrective shape changes in the ribcage. There are published case studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of this program. The case studies presented were of patients that had followed extreme regiments of exercises and were supervised and instructed one on one for hours at a time over the course of 4 to 6 weeks while in Germany. The post x-rays and posture were taken following these extremely intense sessions and certainly demonstrate positive changes.

The Schroth program uses conscious effort to self correct your scoliosis, a noble idea and certainly one that has existed for close to 100 years with some success. The simple fact is that exercise empowers the patient with scoliosis to do something where as the orthopedic community relies on bruit force and an ideology that we will fix it for you with a rigid orthosis or with titanium rods. I think if a patient were to workout 6 hours a day 7 days a week for a year or more doing corrective postural positions and breathing exercises they would probably see some improvement and definitely be better off than wearing a brace or fusing the spine.

The fundamental difference between the CLEAR scoliosis treatment system is that CLEAR uses a two step protocol. The first step is decrease soft tissue resistance via continuous passive motion combined with traction de-rotation forces to disengage elastic deformation from soft tissue adapting to the scoliosis followed by a second step call neuromuscular reeducation which uses weight added to the spine in various locations to influence a reactive change directed by the brain under subconscious control to alter the firing of intrinsic muscles(deep layer muscles) in order to change the neural output to that muscle which alters muscle tone. I realize that was a mouthful but in simpler terms CLEAR is fundamentally different because the exercise is directed by the subconscious righting reflexes and not by conscious effort which only effects larger more superficial muscle groups that have to be continuously worked in order to alter body position. CLEAR was developed by doctors that specialize in spinal rehabilitation who were looking for something that took less effort, time, and created more permanent reductions.
