What to Do When Someone is Unconscious

If you find an unconscious victim, call 911 and do not move him. You don’t know what happened to him, so moving him could aggravate his injury. Furthermore, if he isn’t breathing, then you don’t have much time to get help. When you call 911, see if the victim is breathing or not and if he isn’t, start rescue breathing.


The letter “A” stands for AIRWAY. When a victim is unconscious and unresponsive, check his airway to make sure there are no obstructions. The victim’s breaths might be faint and shallow, so be careful when you look, listen, and feel for his breathing. If you find the victim has stopped breathing, he might have an airway obstruction. The tongue is the most common airway obstruction, but many other things can obstruct the airway too.

While the victim is lying on his back, gently tilt his head backwards. You can do this by putting one hand on his forehead and the other hand under his chin. This position causes the tongue to move and clear the airway. However, if the victim still isn’t breathing, you’ll need to help him breathe.


The letter “B” is for BREATHING. After clearing the victim’s airway, keep the victim’s head titled back and pinch his nose. This will prevent air from escaping as you place your mouth over the victim’s and begin ventilating.

Watch the victim’s chest as you give him air. Avoid overinflating his lungs as this will force air into his stomach, which could result in vomiting. If the victim vomits, simply turn his head to one side and carefully use your finger to sweep any new obstructions away before continuing.

At this time, you need to give the victim two full breaths. After each breath, give his lungs time to exhale and relax. If you put your ear near his mouth and listen, you may hear air escaping. While you do this, watch the victim’s chest and it should fall as his body exhales.

After these breaths, if the victim does not become responsive (e.g. if there is no breathing, moving, coughing, etc.), then you need to check his circulation.


The letter “C” in the A-B-C acronym is for CIRCULATION. Check and see if the victim’s heart is beating by locating the carotid artery. Use two fingers and put them on the victim’s neck like it shows in the picture to the right. Find the middle of the neck (where the Adam’s Apple is located on men) and slide your fingers to the side of the his neck and feel for a pulse.

If the victim has no pulse, it means his heart is not beating. This is when you should perform chest compressions.

Parrot Cages – Metal Toxicity in Parrots

Bellow listed common and not so common metals and their alloys that can be found in cage materials (wires, frame), hardware (screws, padlocks, hinges), parrot toys and common stuff around your house. Some of them if ingested may have adverse affect on your parrot’s health.

All birds are very sensitive to toxins because of fast metabolism, delicate skin and respiratory system, small size, and digestive system with gizzard (pH 2.0, and 42C) that allows some non-food items sit there for prolong time releasing toxins or causing obstruction, impaction, bleeding and death. Natural curiosity and cleverness that pushes parrots to reach for, to chew and taste any usual and unusual objects and strength of its’ beaks put parrots even at greater risk of being exposed to toxins not only when ingested, but through skin contact or when inhaled. Toxins (like heavy metals) get usually deposited in brain, bones, feathers and some in muscle tissue; and may damage many different organs causing non-specific signs of illness.

Paint used on your bird’s cage is the main concern. Powder coating is much stronger than regularly applied paint that easily flakes and can be ingested and let the cage rust.

In short – ingesting any paint or any kind of metal is never a good thing – doesn’t matter how safe it is, especially there are no standards for safe levels of toxic metals established for birds.

Lead and Zinc – highly poisonous for parrots. Exposure to paint or alloys in cage wires containing metals, as Lead and Zinc is the most dangerous to parrots since they naturally not only chew on everything but also use their beaks to climb. If your cage material or hardware contains these metals it more likely will cause heavy metal poisoning in your parrot. Also your family could be exposed to lead in a dust from your parrot’s activity around the cage. The most common signs of poisoning in birds besides subdued behavior and shutting down – with lead poisoning – seizures and falls from the perch, with Zinc – falls from the perch. If you have any suspicion – contact your bird avian vet immediately. The bigger the parrot the bigger the danger – the large birds can easily scratch, shave or detach by chewing up some pieces of softer metals or paint.

Beside paint Lead may be used in paint primers, in soldering metal – soldered joints in cage (distinguished from welded joints), foil on wine bottles, champagne wire, fishing weights, curtain weights, rifle bullets and pellets, stained glass, in PVC and caulk.

Industry standards for Lead refer for the safe standards established by federal government that currently allow less then 600 ppm (parts per million parts or 0.06 % by weight) of Lead in household paint.

Check with manufacturers regarding Zinc, as there are no federal regulations for its content in paint.

Zinc is essential trace element, playing important role in enzymatic activity, but if ingested in uncontrolled amounts from non-food items may lead to high accumulation and toxicity. Zinc is not only used in paint but also may be used in plating – galvanization of cage wires, hardware and some metal parts of bird’s toys (galvanization is term used only for zinc coatings to protect cage metal or hardware from oxidation and make it look better). This is extremely toxic for parrots as described above.

Not to mention Zinc galvanized wire or mesh in outdoor aviaries. Don’t treat outdoor aviaries with vinegar to guard your parrot against zinc poisoning – what it actually does it will etch upper very accessible oxidized zinc layer (dull whitish coat – zinc rust) and zinc coating underneath oxidized layer to some point – not necessarily remove all of it but thin it enough to make underlying metal prone to oxidation and rusting which is also not good. This procedure may be sufficient to protect small birds from zinc poisoning but it seems as the best bet to avoid zinc around parrots altogether. Other zinc and its’ compounds applications: UV protection in plastics, Sun protective creams and lotions, fire retardants, wood preservatives and agricultural fungicides.

Copper is an essential trace element required for hemoglobin formation and is a component of several enzyme systems. Copper is soft metal usually used for plating (not only US Mint cent coins – copper 2.5% plated zinc 97.5%, but also hardware and decorative elements on your cage), kitchen utensils, copper wire, welding. Copper can be potentially poisonous to birds – usually oxidized copper causes troubles – storing acidic food in copper containers or slightly acidic water from copper piping may contribute to elevated levels of this metal in your bird’s diet and it’s easy to avoid. Copper is a popular algaecide and fungicide (used in commercial and residential pools as well as to spray vegetables and grains to prevent fungus and algae growth).

Brass is alloy of copper and zinc and usually used in padlocks – it’s probably OK for small birds that are unlikely to chew the padlock, but should be avoided around parrots. You can find few documented cases of metal toxicity in parrots that chew brass padlocks.

Nickel could be potentially toxic to your bird. Even though there are little documented evidence could be found clarifying nickel toxicity for pet-birds and parrots in particular, few articles clearly show that nickel is moderately toxic to wild birds as well as poultry (especially in young actively growing birds – in experiments growth of chicks to 4 weeks of age was significantly depressed at 700 ppm nickel and above). Nickel is commonly known as human allergen (causing dermatitis upon skin contact) and its insoluble salts and soluble aerosols are highly toxic to everything live. Nickel commonly used for plating as it prevents metal corrosion (on iron and copper usually). So even if you decided that it’s OK to have nickel-plated stuff around your parrot check it frequently, as it may chip and expose underlying metal to oxidation.

Tin is soft metal considered by many experts as not toxic for birds unless it’s “galvanized tin” (which is misused term for galvanized sheet metal (galvanized steel) or some small galvanized iron containers) – if in doubt – consult manufacturer. According to Wikipedia metal tin itself is non-toxic but most tin salts are, as well as some organic tin compounds – TBT (tributyltin) for example. TBT is very toxic – thin layer of this polymer may serve as a protective coating on non-food glass and ceramics. Tin resists corrosion from distilled, sea and soft tap water, but can be attacked by strong acids, alkalis and acid salts. Tin is present in various alloys, such as soldering tin & bronze, pewter, bell metal, Babbitt metal and dental amalgams. Organotin compounds are used as fungicides, insecticides and bactericides and they are well known for animal and human toxicity. Additionally, these are applied as PVC and PCB heat stabilizers.

Steel /a.k.a. Wrought Iron is hard metal nontoxic (mostly because it’s hard and very difficult for parrot to detach and ingest piece of it) to birds, but rust – is, so be careful as cage coating wears off and corrosion starts – consider powder coated cages versus pained. Powder coating is much stronger and structured surface of this coating provides better grip for birds.

Stainless Steel (SS)- is very hard material, that will not shave or scrape easily, will not rust under normal indoor conditions. It doesn’t require any coating, plating or paint, very easy to take care for – you can power wash (just remove your beloved bird!:) and wipe the cage dry – basically nothing to worry about. Couple comments on Stainless Steel:

Some stainless steels may stain and rust if left in humid acidic environment for prolong time or if bird’s droppings accumulate in some places that also keep moisture;

You can find many references saying that SS is not magnetic – this is not exactly correct. Stainless steel is any alloy that contains 10.5% or more of chromium and iron in excess of 50% and other components. Its magnetic property depends on what other components of this alloy are – nickel, magnesium, carbon, nitrogen, molybdenum…Any steel alloy with nickel is not magnetic (nickel strengthen stainless characteristic of iron and chromium alloy). Medical grade SS usually uses nickel and chromium so it’s not magnetic. Alloys only with chromium (no nickel) are magnetic. Different combinations of components define magnetic power of alloy.

Some parrot’s owners say that bright super glossy SS cages (shiny almost mirror-like looking surfaces) made their parrots very exited (even agitated) – it may make sense to look for SS cages that have less lustrous finish – polished surface with subdued mat tone – electro-polishing usually does just that.

Aluminum is a soft metal and by many considered as safe for birds. However few studies indicated that some birds’ species in aluminum-laden habitats with high Aluminum diet have elevated aluminum level in bones and laid deformed eggs with soft shells leading to reduced hatchability. Other studies bring concerns with bone grows and body weight gain in growing chicks with elevated aluminum in the diet. So it’s probably more safe not to let your parrot put his beak on aluminum stuff around your house and to avoid it in bird’s toys (just as mere precaution – you never know what reaction your particular bird will have)

Most of parrot aluminum toxicity cases that were documented connected to heated aluminum foil – which is mostly attributed to fumes from its non-stick polymer additives.

Selenium, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, thallium and cobalt are potentially toxic to birds. Poisoning causes by these elements have been well documented in wild birds due to environmental exposure and infrequently diagnosed in pet birds but it seems prudent to know main sources of household exposure to these elements.

Selenium is another required dietary element that can be toxic if ingested in high amounts. Selenium used in electronic industry, glass and rubber production, photographic processing, pesticides and shampoos – avoid your parrot contact with these chemicals. Interpretation of selenium toxicity is complicated by its interaction with other metals, particularly with mercury and arsenic that may reduce selenium toxicity.

Mercury is nonessential very toxic heavy metal. It affects the immune system, alters genetic and enzyme systems, and damages the nervous system, including coordination and the senses of touch, taste, and sight. Since most of the household hazards associated with mercury were recognized and eliminated while ago – until you are feeding your parrot fish and mercury containing thermometers it’s highly unlikely that your bird will have exposure to the most toxic mercury form – Methyl-mercury or elemental mercury.

Cadmium – is found in some batteries, pigments, used in electroplating, soldering, alloy manufacturing and plastic production. Cadmium and its compounds are extremely toxic even in low concentration. If ingested, bird will accumulate it in liver and kidney causing kidney damage, reduced egg production and altered behavior.

Cadmium is long known as carcinogen. Besides possible cadmium exposure through food (most of the plants have high level of absorption and accumulation of environmental cadmium – one more reason to feed your parrot organic food), burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil and smoking are other dangerous sources of cadmium exposure – since lungs absorb cadmium much more effective then guts. Do not smoke around your parrot and never let it to reach for you cigarette butts, don’t burn coal or use oil lamps. Keep your artist paints (if it applies to you) out of reach of your parrot. Cadmium Yellow, Orange & Red pigments used in artistic colors, in coloring plastics and some specialty paints, in color glass and ceramic glazes (Tiffany lamps, red stoplights) also contain cadmium.

Arsenic has been used to control agricultural pests, to pressure treat wood for outdoor use (until 2003) and in chemotherapeutics. If ingested different organic and inorganic arsenic compounds accumulate in kidney and liver and may cause anemia, nervous disorders and immune system suppression. Hopefully your parrot exposure to this hazard is very limited.

Thallium sulfate (salt of heavy metal Thallium) used as rodenticide (to control rats) and household insecticide (ants and cockroaches) – is highly toxic to mammals, birds and insects used only by professional exterminators – very unlikely your parrot will be exposed to any of this unless you store and use this chemicals in your house.

Cobalt and its salts are used in nuclear medicine, enamels and semiconductors, grinding wheels, painting on glass and porcelain, hygrometers and electroplating, in vitamin B12 manufacture, as a drier for lacquers, varnishes, and paints, and as a catalyst for organic chemical reactions.

According to Wikipedia although cobalt is an essential element for life in minute amounts, at higher levels of exposure it shows mutagenic and carcinogenic effects similar to nickel. After nickel and hexavalent chromium (VI), cobalt is a major cause of contact dermatitis in people.

Play it safe – check all metals in your bird cage and on your birds toys regularly for chipping, peeling, rust & oxidation.

When Estrogen Dominates You’re Not in Control

Estrogen dominance causes hormonal imbalance in women at an ever-earlier age and to a significantly greater degree then has ever been known. Estrogen levels in women are naturally higher, but in their mid-30’s both estrogen and progesterone levels begin to drop in women. Progesterone levels drop to where a woman is producing near zero, but estrogen levels only decline by 40 to 60%, leaving the woman in a state of estrogen dominance.

In western women this condition is greatly exasperated by taking birth control pills and HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy). The active ingredient in any birth control pill or HRT is synthetic estrogen and taking either only elevates estrogen levels well beyond what they otherwise would be.

Estrogen is emitted by virtually all plastic products; including the plastic in the dashboard and seats of your car. In the process of manufacturing aluminum cans estrogen is produced and minute amounts leak into any product packaged in aluminum cans. Food wrapped or packaged in aluminum foil also absorbs estrogen. Given the amount of food consumed in western societies from food packaged or wrapped in aluminum products the build-up of estrogen in the body over time is substantial. Excess estrogen is believed to be the primary cause behind the 40-60% drop in sperm counts in western men.

Combination of these factors has caused estrogen dominance to be epidemic among women in industrialized countries. Increasing the gap between estrogen and progesterone to such a degree women are not only suffering from estrogen dominance, but from progesterone deficiency at the same time.

There has never been a single scientific study to date that even suggests estrogen or HRT will prevent heart disease or the hip fractures so common in women with osteoporosis. The American Heart Association now takes the official position that HRT does not prevent heart disease, but in fact probably increases the incidence of heart attack in women.

There is only one scientifically and undeniable proven fact concerning estrogen; excess intake leads to various forms of cancer. It is unwise to say the least for any woman, at any age or at any time in her life, for any reason whatsoever to take any form of estrogen. Given these alarming facts it behooves women to understand how the progesterone-estrogen equation works in their bodies.

Estrogen without a doubt causes breast fibrocycts; progesterone protects against breast fibrocycts. Estrogen increases body fat; progesterone helps use the body’s fat for energy. Estrogen is a major reason for salt and fluid retention in women; progesterone is a natural diuretic. Estrogen is known to increase blood clotting; progesterone normalizes blood clotting. Estrogen causes endometrial cancer; progesterone prevents endometrial cancer. Estrogen greatly increases the risk of breast cancer; progesterone helps prevent breast cancer.

When comparing the negative effects of estrogen to the positive effects of progesterone, one finds a near perfect balance between the hormones. Clearly and indisputably, natural progesterone is absolutely necessary to counter-act and prevent the many negative effects of estrogen dominance.

Problems and Benefits of Herbal Tea

Herbal teas are becoming very popular, and are widely available. However, are these teas right for everyone? Most are safe for healthy adults. However if you have any medical conditions, it would be wise to choose your tea with caution. Here is a sample of the problem.

Depression: Any tea that contains caffeine should be avoided if you are being treated for depression. Teas with chamomile, passionflower, lavender and/or jasmine could interact with medications for depression, anxiety and stress. If you have bipolar, these teas could make the condition worse. Those taking antidepressants should avoid St. John’s Wort, because it could boost the effectiveness of the antidepressant.

Diabetes: Teas that contain sugar should be avoided, including natural sugars such as found in licorice. Herbs that change sugar levels can also be a problem. Cinnamon and aloe vera are good examples of ingredients that can change blood sugar.

Gout: Herbs that have diuretic properties could cause flare ups for those who suffer from gout. While most manufacturers don’t use parsley and dandelion in their products, it’s a good idea to check to make sure your favorite brand doesn’t contain one.

Heart Disease: Some popular ingredients in herbal teas can dramatically effect those taking medications for cardiovascular disease. As an example, rosemary and licorice both raise blood pressure. St. John’s Wort interacts with many medications for heart disease and chamomile may act as a blood thinner. Before purchasing any herbal products, you should speak to your pharmacist to make sure the ingredients are safe for you.

Kidney Disease: Aloe, juniper berries, licorice and sassafras can harm the kidneys. Senna is also a problem, and is usually found in teas that act as laxatives.

Laxatives: Aside from the problems herbal laxatives cause, there is one major interaction to watch out for. Taking licorice with any laxative, whether pill, bulk fiber or tea, can cause a serious drop in potassium levels. If you need to use a laxative, make sure you avoid any herbal tea using licorice.

Pain Relief: There are two types of pain reliever to think about. Over the counter or prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can interact with willow bark and feverfew. That’s because they contain an ingredient found in aspirin. Prescription pain killers containing narcotics or synthetic narcotics can interact with any herb that causes drowsiness. These include chamomile, lavender, passionflower, jasmine, kava kava and St. John’s Wort.

Neurotransmitter Balancing – How to Get More Fun and Improve Your Working Productivity

Do you know that the best selling grocery items such as soft drinks, cigarettes, alcohol and coffee are actually mood modifiers? But why do we need them so often? Is there any serious problem with our moods? Or is it too easy to get the mood you want over-the-counter? Or maybe both?

Since ancient times, humans figured out how to make themselves happy when they tried opium for the first time. And it turned out to be too easy: just take it and you will get all of the happiness in the world. But very soon they realized that if they continued to do it, the human race would vanish. This is why they prohibited opium almost everywhere in the world. But lack of opium meant lack of artificial happiness. So they had to look for other ways to get better moods. People were desperate because there was no solution in sight. The solution came unexpectedly.

1951, Seaview Hospital on Staten Island, New York US. Two doctors Irving Selikoff and Edward Robitzek are starting a new clinical trial. It is all about treatment of tuberculosis and it has nothing to do with mood. But when they started the new drug from Hoffman — LaRoche called isoniazid, they noticed something nobody was expected to see and what puzzled all the doctors in the world: patients felt much better not only because their infection became under control, but because of general stimulation. Even though nobody could explain it, in 1952 the psychiatrist from Cincinnati Dr. Max Lurie started giving isoniazid to his mentally ill patients. The treatment was so successful that next year he and Harry Salzer were happy to announce that isoniazid helped about two thirds of their depressed patients. That’s when the term “antidepressant” was invented to describe the action of the isoniazid. After that they went forward pretty fast. In the in the 1987 FDA approved the first antidepressant blockbuster drug, that even now remains to be one of the most often prescribing drugs — Prozac. It generated $12.92B in revenue from 1996-2000 1 and about $2.4B in revenue from Prozac from 2002-2005 2. Its name is in the books and movies — “Prozac nation” for example.

But what does this miracle drug do?

It brings up the amount of Neurotransmitter Serotonin in the brain. But how does it change our moods?

1921, Germany. Pharmacologist Otto Loewi endorses the fact, that brain nerve cells, as well as other nerve cells, are communicating with each other not by electric current, but by chemicals called Neurotransmitters. So by changing the concentration of a certain neurotransmitter, responsible for your mood, they can make you happy. That is what Serotonin does.

But is it only for sick people? What about people like you and me? What about big shots?

November 15, 1995, White House Washington DC. The graying but still very handsome president of the United States is standing in the Oval Office. He is not alone. But he is not with a member of his cabinet or staff, foreign ambassador or CIA officer. In front of him is a young brunette with wide-open eyes and gorgeous curves, that cannot be conceived by her dress, in compromising position. What was he thinking about at that moment? Was he thinking about us, American citizens? Was his thinking about the economy? Or his wife? Maybe he was thinking about the danger he put himself by having a relationship with this woman that can lead to disaster? We will never know. But my guess is: he was thinking about this woman, who was just in front of him and nothing else. What was the reason for him to forget everything in the world except this woman? Was it her gorgeous body? Hard to believe, because the president had beautiful women at his disposal. Jennifer Flowers for example. Have you ever seen her? If you had, you would never forget her. Or maybe it was something else that he didn’t have himself and what he desperately needed? Could it be a neurotransmitter imbalance, that he tried to correct?

Let’s try to recreate the way his brain and that woman’s brain where working, using public beta and common sense. Would it be reasonable to say that the president was a highly motivated and hard-working person, who could concentrate on the main task to achieve his goals? I would say so. What are the neurotransmitters that are responsible for those features?

The Dopamine neurotransmitter is the one that is responsible for motivation, enthusiasm, energy, power and implementation of thoughts. Dopamine type personality is usually dominant, social, highly motivated, and future oriented. They are usually high rank executives. What about people who do not have enough dopamine? They’re usually suffering from fatigue, depression, obesity, editions inability to concentrate because of lack of motivation. They usually need coffee to be able to work. They sleep too much, have minimal sex drive, lack social skills, and often follow others’ orders instead of being creative themselves.

Did the president have plenty of dopamine? Yes, definitely.

The GABA neurotransmitter is the one that is responsible for maintaining concentration and focus to the main task by suppressing all unnecessary stimuli. It’s like when you’re reading a book, besides seeing the text you hear voices, you can smell perfume or food, and you can feel touch. What GABA does is suppress all those unnecessary stimuli and let you concentrate on what you are reading. GABA type personality is very reliable, can concentrate easily, has a stable attention span, good memory, calm personality and is able to relax easily. But what if the person doesn’t have enough GABA? Then it is difficult for them to concentrate. They usually cannot focus, have memory problems, mood swings, frequently lose friends, have anxiety, tension and insomnia.

Did the president have plenty of GABA? It would appear so.

But besides GABA and dopamine there are two more major neurotransmitters. Maybe that’s where the president had a problem?

Forget about the president for a moment and let’s concentrate on that attractive brunette with wide-open eyes and curvy figure. Based on what we all know about her would it be fair to say that she is a romantic and easy-going person, likes to flirt, and likes to have fun? I would say so. But what are the neurotransmitters that are responsible for such features?

The Acetylcholine neurotransmitter is the one that is responsible for memory, learning, information processing and language. Acetylcholine type personality has a very good memory, likes fantasies, likes to flirt, and often contemplates a better future. Because they’re very good in retrieving stored information from their memories, they are very romantic: they bring memories from the past to create their present reality and future. People, who are low in acetylcholine, have poor memory, poor creativity, learning problems, depression, insomnia. They usually are not romantic and cannot take care of others. They’re more concerned with their deficiencies.

Did that brunette in the Oval Office have plenty of acetylcholine? No doubt about that.

Let’s talk about the last neurotransmitter — Serotonin. It is the one that is responsible for happiness and excitement, enthusiasm and joy. Serotonin dominant personality likes challenges, excitement and fun. They like to flirt, experiment with sex and are inclined to have frivolous relationships. They do what they want whenever they want to. It is easy for them to adapt to a new environment but difficult to stick to the plan. They can solve problems spontaneously. When a person does not have enough serotonin, the when problems start: they develop memory problems, insomnia, anxiety, sugar craving, night sweats etc..

To me that brunette had plenty of Serotonin.

Why was the President so attracted to her? Because she had plenty of features from neurotransmitters he may be deficient in. Think about it: he had plenty of Dopamine and GABA but deficient in Acetylcholine and Serotonin. But she had plenty of what he needed to balance himself — Serotonin and Acetylcholine. That is why he was so attracted to her. Could his wife give him serotonin and acetylcholine dependent features? I doubt it.

Bottom line is simple: to be happy and function efficiently you need all four of neurotransmitters — Dopamine, Acetylcholine, GABA and Serotonin. You need to balance your neurotransmitters to achieve your goals. And it can be done. It is not something you that is predetermined by your genes or the way you were brought up. Neurotransmitter balancing is the reality and you can do it.

6. Boiling Water. Just pouring straight boiling water will kill weeds. Be careful as it will also kill whatever other green good plant material is near as well.

7. Salt and Chili Pepper. Sprinkle this around the base of the undesirable plants. The salt will make the soil uncomfortable for the plant to grow and the chili pepper will keep your dog from being interested in it (unless you happen to have one like mine who likes ANYTHING).This is a good method for weeds growing in cracks or crevices.

8. Vinegar and clove or orange oil. Use 1 tablespoon essential oil to the vinegar to add to its ability to stick to the plant.

9. Cornmeal. Cornmeal has an element in it that discourages new growth. Once you get rid of those pesky weeds, use cornmeal to stop regrowth.

How to Deal With a Choking Adult

Although choking isn’t a common phenomenon, it is an emergency situation where some simple first aid techniques could make all of the difference and save that person’s life. Choking is a time critical event, and by acting quick you can make all of the difference, if an individual cannot remove the foreign object occluding their airway, then suffocation and cardiac arrest will soon ensue.

What is the first thing when you realise that someone is choking, don’t panic. Keep calm and you will be best able to assist them. If you are not sure is someone is choking, simply ask them and they will give you an appropriate response. When you’ve established that the individual is choking, call 999 and ask for an ambulance, this means specialist help will be on its way. Try and encourage the patient to cough, coughing is the least invasive of the foreign away occlusion removal techniques. Individuals are sometimes able to dislodge the foreign body by coughing it out, but after a few attempts, or if they are completely ineffective/cannot cough, you will need to move onto the next technique.

The action of CPR can often allow for the object to be dislodged. Unless you can clearly see the object and easily grasp it, never place your hands in the persons’ mouth. By doing so you may be pushing the object further into their trachea, or you may cause them to be sick and that will further occlude the airway.

Just remember in the emergency situation, call for an ambulance immediately and keep calm so you know what to do.
