White Coating on Tongue and Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Stare at yourself in the mirror and bring your tongue out – do you have a white coating on your tongue and bad breath? A lot of people who experience bad breath (halitosis) have a noticeable white coating at the end of the tongue. Even if you don’t notice anything, you might have a coating, at times referred to as a biofilm, on your tongue formed by countless unusual microbes, the leftovers of food and body cells, and a non-cellular medium that holds it in unison.

A number of microbes living on your tongue are most probably pathogens – organisms that can cause infectivity and bad breath, actually, the tongue is the habitat of the maximum number of microbes living in the mouth. This is why it is so advantageous to employ a tongue cleaner to eliminate the biofilm, mainly if you have a noticeably coated tongue and bad breath. Studies have revealed that habitual physical elimination of the coating brings about a noteworthy decrease in numbers of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth, and in the amount of halitosis.

Physical tongue cleaning will be more successful against your bad breath, coated tongue and oral microbes as the noncellular medium of the biofilm in fact shields the organisms in it from mouthwashes, normal immune cells and the cleaning act of saliva – imagine of a rigid jelly-like material putting everything in a thin water-resistant layer. An excellent tongue cleaner or tongue scraper gets past the barrier of the medium by simply scraping it all away and lessening the coated tongue and bad breath. In the meantime, lower layers that turn out to be uncovered will be susceptible to antibacterial substances in the mouth like saliva or mouthwash at the same time as the biofilm is reestablishing itself.

And it will restore itself – no tongue cleaner or antibacterial product will ever totally eliminate the unwelcome organisms in your mouth that are producing bad breath coated tongue and even gum disease. It is achievable, though to maintain the numbers of these organisms down with a usual program of superior oral cleanliness together with tongue scraping and the application of a mouthwash that aims to remove the bacteria that forms heavily coated tongue and bad breath.

There are quite a lot of potentials for what causes a white coating on the tongue. The most well known reason of a white coating is a candidal infection, which is caused by fungus. Moreover, thrush can be formed by antibiotics or steroids that were breathed in for sinus or asthma problems. In addition, a white coating can just be the increase of dead cells on the tongue.

o A white coating on the tongue may be formed due to dehydration! If you aren’t drinking a sufficient amount of water, it is quite probable that tiny pieces of food are sticking with your tongue! Just drinking more and more water will cure this situation. Therefore, drinking large amount of water assists you very much when it comes to a white coating of the tongue.

o To prevent white coating of your tongue you should avoid soy milk which is definitely one of its root causes.

o Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper. Be certain that you have cleaned the end position of your tongue where in most of the cases microbes survive. Be cautious and don’t rub too hard the initial time.

o Make an effort to brush your tongue with a combination of baking soda, 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Don’t try it for a long time; otherwise your tongue might get raw.

o Add 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to lukewarm water and allow the combination to sit in your mouth for as much time as you can control. The cayenne pepper appears to draw mucous up and out. It’s an excellent treatment for sore throats also.

o Initially, place 1 spoon of salt in a cup after that add water, then immerse your tooth brush into it and brush your tongue, it might hurt although then the pain and white coating will disappear. Or hold the salty water for approximately half a minute on your tongue and then gargle for another half minute then spit out.

What is Aspergers Disease

Aspergers is not actually a disease at all but more of a condition that many children have. The word disease itself can give the wrong impression of Aspergers and the many wonderful children who experience it. In this article I will give a simple explanation of some of the characteristics of Aspergers and then give some useful tips on how to manage challenging behaviours which are often associated with this condition.

Aspergers is a developmental disorder that affects a child’s ability to socialize and communicate effectively with others. Children with Aspergers typically exhibit social awkwardness and an all-absorbing interest in specific topics. Signs and symptoms of Aspergers include displaying unusual nonverbal communication, such as lack of eye contact, few facial expressions, or awkward body postures and gestures. People with Aspergers will often show an intense obsession with one or two specific, narrow subjects, such as baseball statistics, train schedules, weather or snakes. They will appear not to understand, empathize with, or be sensitive to others’ feelings and will have a hard time “reading” other people or understanding humor. When they speak it is often in a voice that is monotonous, rigid or unusually fast. They will sometimes appear to move clumsily, with poor coordination and display an odd posture or a rigid gait

Children with Aspergers frequently display challenging behaviors as a response to a world which they cannot deal with effectively. Any attempt to discontinue the behaviors must first consider why the behavior is occurring. The best way to establish why the individual with Aspergers is displaying challenging behaviors is to complete an A-B-C analysis. This includes an analysis of the Antecedent, Behavior, and the Consequence. The antecedent is what happens before the behavior. The behavior is their response to the antecedent. The consequence, and this is the tricky one, is whatever immediately follows the behavior. Often the child with Aspergers will have limited ability to verbalize their needs; you can help them with this once you have identified the cause of the behavior. Remember it will be something that happens either before or after the behavior occurs. Once you have established the reason for the behavior, the child with Aspergers will need a consistent behavior program or method of intervention. Children with Aspergers crave consistency and routine and need to know what is coming, or you will simply create more challenging behaviors.

For children with Aspergers, the behavioral intervention should include consideration of environmental changes that may need to be made. This may include removing items that may be over-stimulating or providing things that they appear to need. For the child with Aspergers, the behavioral intervention should also plan to provide the individual with a replacement behavior. Remember, if you eliminate the behavior without meeting the need, they will find their own replacement behavior! Autism and Aspergers are difficult to diagnose especially in young children where language and cognitive skills are still developing. All children are different, and many toddlers show a sign or symptom of Aspergers at some point.

It’s natural for small children to be egocentric, and many little ones show a strong interest in a particular topic, such as dinosaurs or a favorite fictional character. These alone aren’t reasons to be alarmed! However, if your child has frequent problems in school or seems unable to make friends, it’s time to consult your pediatrician. These difficulties have many possible causes, but developmental disorders such as Aspergers shouldn’t be ruled out. Hopefully this article will have provided you with some ideas of what to do next, where to seek help and how to manage your child’s behaviors better.

What Are the Different Types of Migraines?

If you’ve been suffering from migraine headaches, you may have noticed the symptoms are almost the same for everyone – a painful ache in one spot that becomes worse and spreads over one side of your face – sometimes almost entirely. The nausea and vomiting you feel are also common symptoms of most migraines. So, since these symptoms are so much the same, there’s only one type of migraine, right?

Actually, there are quite a few types of migraines, but most people suffer from one of two types, the common migraine or the classic migraine. The difference between these two headaches is that the common migraine does not have an aura and classic migraines do have an aura.

An aura refers to visual symptoms that begin before the classic migraine actually starts. These symptoms may include seeing jagged lines in front of your eyes or actually losing vision for a few minutes, hearing ringing or other noises that aren’t actually there, feeling numb or having tingly sensations, or smelling odd odors. This aura can actually be useful, because it can and does serve as a warning that a very painful migraine is on the way. This would at least allow you to take some preventive measures. For people who suffer from a common migraine, there is often no warning. Suddenly, they feel pain in their jaw or eye socket and it rapidly spreads and increases in intensity until they have a full blown migraine.

While few people develop one of the rarer migraines, there are several you may want to know about. These migraines are just as painful as the more common migraine types.

* Exertion Migraines are over more quickly than most types of migraines. You can develop one of these migraines if you overextend yourself while you are exercising and develop dehydration at the same time, if you lift something heavy, if you have a sneezing fit, or even if you bend over.

* Retinal Migraines are migraines that cause you to temporarily lose vision in an eye. You will probably lose vision before the head pain actually begins.

* Hemiplegic Migraines have a rather scary symptom. If you suffer from this type of migraine, you’ll actually develop temporary paralysis on the side of your body that the migraine is forming on.

* Ophtalmoplegic Migraines are one of the longest lasting types of migraines. This form of the disease begins with pain around the eye and eye problems continue throughout the entire migraine. Visual distortions and blurred vision are common symptoms of this type of migraine.

* Noctural Migraines are fortunately very rare and develop during the night. They are intense enough to wake the migraine sufferer from their sleep.

* Basilar Artery Migraines are usually limited to teen girls or young women. This migraine develops by causing the basilar artery to constrict, which leads to dizziness, poor co-ordination, vomiting and even problems with speech. This migraine type eventually should become the more standard classic migraine, with its accompanying aura.

* Abdominal Migraines are a type of migraine that doesn’t actually involve head pain. Instead, this migraine usually causes stomach pain. The normal nausea and vomiting other migraine types cause occurs after the stomach pain starts. This migraine type occurs most commonly in young children.

So as you can see although most people simply refer to a migraine headache there are many, many different types of migraine itself. That being said most people tend to suffer from either the classic or common migraine.

You can learn more about migraines and what you can do to treat them, naturally and otherwise, by following the links at the end of this article.

Incompatible Fruit Combinations Can Make You Sick

I know it is hard to believe, but eating incompatible fruit combinations can make you sick. If you have been reading my health articles, you probably know by now that I am a firm advocate of a Mediterranean Diet that includes adequate amounts of fruits because they contribute many vitamins and minerals indispensable for good health. So, if that is the case, how eating fruits can make you sick? Because when you eat certain fruits in combination with other foods, your body produces toxins and chemical reactions harmful to your organism. These toxins can lead to disease.

Thus, the first rule is to pay attention to the different combinations you can incur in when eating fruits; right combinations will promote health while wrong combinations will generate disease. This is due to certain incompatibilities between foods that can be classified as chemical and physical:

*Chemical incompatibility: One where toxic elements are formed during the process of digestion due to the fact that some of the nutrients found in the foods being part of the meal are chemically incompatible among themselves.

*Physical incompatibility: One where some foods slow down the digestion of others, causing the mixture to stay longer than needed in the digestive tract, meaning the stomach and intestines. An example would be eating farinaceous and acidic foods in the same meal.

Classification of fruits

It is important to know the different groups in which fruits are classified as this classification would help you combine them properly. Fruits are generally classified as:

Acidic fruits: These fruits are rich in acids. Not all acidic fruits contain citric acid as is the case of pineapple. Acidic fruits include oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, mandarins, lemons, tomatoes, kiwis and strawberries.

Low acidic fruits: The acids in these fruits are not as strong as the ones in acidic fruits. Low acidic fruits include apricots, plums, grapes, green apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, cherries and mangos.

Sweet fruits: These fruits do not contain acids. Among them we find ripe bananas, all dry fruits, ripe mangos, cherimoyas, sweet grapes and figs.

Neutral fruits: They are the richest in proteins, vitamins, mineral salts and oils. Neutral fruits are avocados, papayas and nuts.

Be aware of certain mixtures among fruits

Fresh fruits are easily digested because they are low in proteins, starches and fat, while they have a large content of water, enzymes and vitamins, characteristics that cause them to be absorbed quickly through the intestine. Because of its fast absorption, fruits should not be eaten right after meals as they will sit on top of the rest of the other foods in the stomach and will ferment. This fermentation will cause toxins and poor digestion.

Although it is better to eat fruits by themselves, they can be tolerated when they are ingested with other foods that present similar digestive conditions. The following are some guidelines you can observe when eating fruits to prevent the formation of toxins:

Acidic and low-acidic fruits: It is best not be combined them with other foods. Especially, do not combine them with sweet fruits or starches such as potatoes, bread, rice, corn, cookies, cereals, pumpkin, lentils or wheat. You can combined them, though, with animal protein such as red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, and nuts.

Sweet fruits: They can be combined among themselves. Sweet fruits are not compatible with acidic fruits; when the acids mix with the sugars they stay longer in the intestine and toxic fermentation take place. In addition, the formation of glucose takes longer.

Do not mix sweet fruits with cheese, yogurt, nuts, seeds, beans, chicken, fish, red meat, eggs and coconut.

Neutral fruits: Consuming neutral fruits (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts, etc.) and sweet fruits in the same meal will always cause indigestion that can injure the liver. When the oils from neutral fruits combine with the sugars of sweet fruits, they produce toxic compounds harmful to body cells. Neutral fruits can be combined among themselves.

Combinations you should avoid

1. Oranges and carrots: They can cause malfunction of the liver. They increase the production of bile, increase substances that harm the kidneys, and may cause heartburn.

2. Pineapples and dairy products: This combination is quite toxic to the organism.

3. Papayas and lemons: It may generate problems with hemoglobin, causing anemia.

General recommendations to follow when eating fruit

1. Eat fruit before a meal, not after

2. Do not indulge in juices from acidic fruits

3. Do not take fruit juice after a meal. You can drink it one hour before the meal.

4. Do not mix fruits and vegetables within the same meal.

5. Do not mix oranges with other fruits.

6. Citric fruits should be eaten in the morning.

7. Sweet fruits can be eaten at any time of the day.

8. Fruits should be eaten ripe. Fruits that are not ripe become acidic in the body.

For a nutritive and tasty fruit salad, you can mix the following fruits: papaya, ripe mango, pears, figs, dates, red apple, peaches, banana, nectarines, and fresh cherries.

Final Thoughts

Many scientific studies have shown that when people eat adequate amounts of fruit, a substantial decrease of many common chronic diseases happens. Keep in mind, however, that incompatible fruit combinations may lead to disease.

Have a wonderful and healthy day.

The Dangers Of Celebrex

Pain is not a pleasant thing to have to live with, but sometimes you have to stop and ask the drug companies if they can’t come up with a better way of managing pain, because what we have on the market today is just flat out killing us. You can pretty much pick your pain killer. Doesn’t really matter. In this article, we’re going to discuss a very common anti inflammatory by the name of Celebrex. Hopefully, after you are done reading this, if you don’t decide to stop taking this very dangerous drug, you’ll at least know the risks that you’re exposing yourself to. Like they say, forewarned is forearmed.

Celebrex is a member of a wide range of drugs called NSAIDs. In case you’re wondering what that stands for, it’s NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. That’s how they came up with NSAIDs. What these drugs basically do is reduce inflammation. This can be inflammation from a variety of ailments such as arthritis and even menstrual pain. Doctors pretty much prescribe Celebrex for just about any pain that isn’t a common headache. This is another problem with the medical community. We hand out pain killers like they were gum drops. You can thank the drug companies for that. But that’s another subject altogether, so don’t get me started.

Fortunately, your doctor will tell you not to take Celebrex if you suffer from heart problems or if you’ve had a heart attack or stroke. You’ll also be told to avoid taking Celebrex if you’ve had a history of ulcers or stomach bleeding. Other factors that will put you at risk if you take Celebrex are history of liver problems, kidney problems. asthma, or any kind of blood clotting problem.

So, just what are the possible side effects of taking Celebrex? Well, on the more mild side, you can suffer from an upset stomach, mild heart burn, constipation, gas, dizziness, headache and some blurred vision. This drug can also make you extremely nervous. When I used to take Vioxx for a muscle pull, I almost had a panic attack the first night. I immediately stopped taking it. Now I am quite glad I did.

But what about the really harmful side effects? Well, at worst, Celebrex can increase your risk of a life threatening heart attack or stroke. I guess the rest of the possible serious problems really don’t matter much when taking this drug can basically kill you outright.

If I sound angry, cold or just plain fed up, it’s because I have personally seen loved ones die because of Celebrex and drugs like them. The doctors claim that these drugs do more harm than good. I’m not so convinced. However, now that you know the facts of Celebrex, you can make up your own mind as to whether or not you want to risk your life taking this medication.

Someday the medical profession will get it right.

They just haven’t yet.

To YOUR Health,

Steve Wagner

Myelodysplastic Syndrome – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of blood disorders characterized by a dysfunctional bone marrow resulting in ineffective blood-cell production. Signs and symptoms include anemia, fatigue, fever, heart disease, bleeding from different parts of the body, reduced urine output and shock. MDS can be either primary with no known cause or secondary, which results from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, viral infection, exposure to chemicals or a genetic predisposition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of MDS is aimed at reducing symptoms, treating the basic pathology of the disease and improving the quality of life. Medicines which act on the dysfunctional bone marrow form the main stay of treatment for this condition. These include Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Lohasav, Guduchyadi-Qadha, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose are: Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Chirayta (Swertia chirata), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica) and Nimba (Azadirachta indica).

Medicines like Tapyadi-Loh, Punarnavadi-Mandur and Lohasav are used to treat anemia. Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (Purified wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma are used to treat bleeding from any part of the body. Medicines like Arjunarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Drakshasav, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used to treat fatigue, heart disease and heart failure. Medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras and Maha-Sudarshan-Churna are used to treat fever.

A special type of medicated enema, known as ‘Tikta- Ksheer- Basti’, is used to treat disorders related to the bone marrow. Milk is boiled with medicines like Guduchi, Amalaki, Musta and Patol. Other medicines like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut are added to this milk, which is then given in the form of enema. Repeated courses of such enemas are given for several months. This Panchkarma procedure has special importance in the treatment of MDS. Ayurvedic medicines can be given in combination with modern treatment for MDS, such as packed-cell transfusions.

MDS can either run an acute or a chronic course and often progresses to blood cancer, with a potentially fatal outcome. All patients affected with MDS should therefore be under the regular care and supervision of a Hematologist.

Using Serrrapeptase and Proteolytic Enzymes in Treating Lupus

Lupus, otherwise known as systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease more common among women than in men. It often reaches its climactic condition after puberty. The exact reason for the manifestation of such disease is unknown. However, researchers believe that their may be several factors that contribute to this disease. These factors include the female hormone estrogen, major stress or infection, race or ethnicity, and genetics- meaning it may be hereditary.

Lupus is a chronic multisystem disease wherein a person’s immune system attacks various cells or organs, causing damage and dysfunctions. When the body is threatened by germs that can cause infections, the body’s immune system automatically responds by producing immunity cells and antibodies to fight off germs, causing severe inflammation.

In this particular condition, the immune system goes into overdrive and is not able to distinguish between the body’s healthy normal cells and the foreign infectious agents. Thus, it starts producing autoantibodies that attack the healthy cells.

The diagnosis of lupus may prove to be a little challenging since the symptoms can vary from one person to another. In addition, the symptoms of lupus can be very similar to other diseases. These various symptoms include muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss, swollen glands, skin rash, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

One way to determine if a person has lupus is by taking blood tests and having your results and symptoms evaluated by a rheumatologist. The kind of treatment a lupus patient gets depends on how serious his condition is. However, almost all people with lupus take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS , corticosteroids, and second-line agents to help with the inflammation and the pain.

On the other hand, in certain studies using enzyme as treatment for lupus showed that the inflammatory activity caused by the abnormal autoimmune responses decreased more quickly compared to when medical drugs were used. Moreover, since enzymes are basically natural to the body, the test showed no side effects.

Proteolytic enzymes such as serrapeptase are actually capable of clearing out inflammation by breaking down the scar tissues caused by the inflammation without harming the living tissues. And when these enzymes are put together and combined with curcumin, a substance derived from dried tumeric roots, the pain caused by the inflammation and the inflammation itself will clear out and [provide the body time to heal itself and replace the damaged tissues. Moreover, using enzymes will help lessen the patient’s dependence on drugs. Also, taking glucosamine, chondroitin, or collagen complex can help in the regeneration of the cartilages.

How to Find the Most Suitable Hair Loss Treatment and Increase the Chances of Stopping Hair Loss

Introduction

There are several types of hair loss and balding. While the mechanism of the phenomenon of hair loss and baldness is not fully understood, there is vast knowledge on the ability to treat the types of hair loss and baldness by medication or natural means.

We are dividing the alopecia types into treatable and non-treatable conditions and we shall hereby explain how one can evaluate the chances of successful treatment in the treatable conditions.

When evaluating the chances of improving the condition of the hair, the most important criteria is the condition of the hair follicles. As long as the hair follicles are alive, there is a chance to grow new hair. Otherwise, there is no basis for any treatment to succeed and the only options are cosmetic- wig, hair transplant etc.

Life period of the hair follicles may reach up to twenty-five years. The hair follicles grow hair in cycles of growth and fall. In the process of hair loss, each cycle of growth produces shorter, thinner hair and there is less pigment (color).

When the scalp has a bright plume, it indicates that the hair follicle is still alive but dormant. Given the appropriate specialist’s knowledge and therapy, the hair follicle can be stimulated to grow hair. However if the surface is completely smooth, it indicates that the hair follicle is no longer alive and there is zero chance to grow hair- except in some cases as explained below (Alopecia Areata, Totalis and Universalis).

The different types of hair loss and the chances of growth of new hair are hereby given.

Non Treatable conditions

The conditions of hair loss which have no chance of hair regrowth are: Alopecia from birth, Scarring Alopecia, Traction Alopecia and Lupus disease.

Alopecia from birth is a rare condition, where the infant is born without hair follicles.

In Scarring Alopecia the infected zone looks like a scar and the hair follicles are dead. The reasons of the phenomena are unknown. The chances of growing new hair are zero, but with proper treatment the expansion of the Scarring Alopecia can be stopped.

In Traction Alopecia the hair is pulled out of the scalp and the hair follicle becomes weak and dies.

In alopecia which is caused by Lupus disease, the skin is rough and pink and the chances of growth of hair is almost non existent.

Treatable Conditions

The conditions of hair loss which has a chance to be treated successfully are: Male Pattern Alopecia, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis.

Male Pattern Alopecia is common male baldness. It’s characteristics are loss of hair at the front and crown area first. In many cases, there is still at least hair plume, hair loss and baldness can be stopped by affecting the hair follicles.

In Alopecia Areata condition, typical round hair loss patches evolve rapidly. Sometimes the bald patches spread to full hair loss of the scalp (Alopecia Totalis) or even whole body areas (Alopecia Universalis). The phenomenon could harm men, women and small children. Conventional medicine assumes the Alopecia Areata condition is an autoimmune disease, though the exact mechanism of Alopecia Areata is not known nor fully understood.

In many cases Alopecia Areata is caused by psychological pressure: people who experienced trauma have sometimes lost entire hair within hours or days.

Evaluating Chances of Successful Treatment

As explained in the introduction, the condition of the hair follicles is the most important criteria for evaluating the chances of successful treatment. Existence of thin white hair is a visible sign for living hair follicles. The thin white hair can be noticed when examining the scalp from close distance, with good light conditions. Sometimes viewing the scalp from an angle against light source helps to see the thin white hair.

Naturally, when there is thin white hair on the alopecia area, it indicates that the hair follicles are weak but alive, so there is a basis to grow hair, given the proper treatment. But when the alopecia area is smooth, the evaluation depends on the alopecia type:

In male pattern alopecia condition, smooth scalp is a clear indication that the hair follicles are not alive and there is no chance to grow new hair. However in Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis the hair follicles sometimes remain alive even if the alopecia area is smooth and evaluating the condition of the hair follicles should take into consideration other important factors.

The factors which play important role in the condition of the hair follicles and hence the chances of success:

– Age of the patient: at younger age there are higher chances to recover

– Period with Alopeia Areata condition: if the condition is recent, the chances are higher. Among people who experienced Alopecia Areata for decades, the hair follicles are probably too weak.

– Alopecia Areata condition was due to a shock: In those cases, the chances of recovery are better.

– Use of violent and inappropriate treatment: Some treatments cause permanent damage to the hair follicles. In such cases, even if there is growth of hair, it is common that once the treatment is stopped the hair falls and the hair follicles remain weaker, which makes it harder to stimulate growth.

– Thin white hair: as previously explained, if there is thin white hair the chances of recovery increase.

– Use of wig: When a wig is applied, the scalp’s skin is not normally exposed to air and is not breathing (skin is not able to absorb oxygen). In cases of wig users, the chances of recovery are lower. If wig is attached by glue, chances are near zero.

It should be emphasized that these are general guidelines for treatment success chances, based on experience with a population of Alopecia Areata patients. A personal evaluation is required in order to accurately evaluate the success chances of a specific person.

Choosing the Right Treatment

There are natural or medication therapies which are intended to revive the hair roots. When considering medication treatment, it is advised to consult with a specialist dermatologist and inquire about possible side effects. The internet includes vast information about the side effects of conventional treatments. In case of natural treatments, it is advised to seek for a treatment which is certified by a recognized organization. The treatment should be certified for being safe for usage and without any side effects. In order to be certified for zero side effects, the treatment should contain only herbs and plants with the maximal safety degree – edible herbs- as defined by the U.S. CTFA list of plants.

Rhabdomyosarcoma – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children. It is believed to arise from primitive muscle cells. The tumor can occur anywhere in the body except bones; the most common sites being the head and neck, extremities and the genitourinary tract. The cause of this condition is unknown, though several genetic syndromes and environmental factors are known to increase the prevalence of this disease. RMS usually manifests as an expanding mass; symptoms depend on the location of the tumor including pain, breathlessness, anemia and disturbed organ function. Treatment of RMS involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The Ayurvedic treatment of RMS is aimed at treating the tumor and preventing its spread to other parts of the body. Since this is a tumor occurring predominantly in children, herbal medicines are preferred for treatment purposes. Medicines which act on the muscle tissue and regulate the metabolism of muscles are used in this condition. These include Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Behada (Terminalia bellerica), Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Indrayav (Holarrhina antidysentrica) and Guggulu (Commiphora mukul). Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Medohar-Guggulu, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Guduchyadi-Qadha and Chandra-Prabha-Vati are used both to reduce the tumor size and to prevent its spread.

Medicines like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Pippali, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Laghu-Malini-Vasant and Madhu-Malini-Vasant are used to improve the immune status of the body and help reduce the tumor. Medicines like Abhrak-Bhasma, Tamra-Bhasma, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant and Heerak-Bhasma can also be used in very small doses. In addition, medicines can be given to reduce or prevent the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These medicines include Vishwa, Musta, Shankh-Bhasma, Laghu-Sutshekhar-Ras, Kutaj-Parpati, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus) and Laxadi-Guggulu.

Ayurvedic medicines can thus be given as additional therapy to conventional treatment at any stage of the treatment, to help improve the response and improve overall survival. All such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of a Pediatric Oncology team.

Top Down Percentage Sweater Patterns – Create Custom Sweaters

If you want to knit a top down sweater, where do you start? Have you ever tried a percentage sweater with top down knitting? You can create your own top down sweater patterns if you know three things: your knitting gauge, what size you want your finished sweater to be and your neck measurement. Can it be that easy?

Knitting Gauge

This means knitting a gauge swatch with yarn you love and needles you think will make nice fabric. When you find a happy combination that produces fabric you love, measure across stitches at the center. How many stitches per inch did you get? Count partial stitches, too. They add up.

Finished Sweater Size

Instead of measuring yourself, measure your favorite sweater that’s a similar weight to your fabric swatch. Why? Because your favorite sweater tells you how much ease or wiggle room you feel comfortable in. You’ll want your custom top down sweater the same size–unless you can improve it. Maybe you always wanted your sleeves a dab longer. Or a V-neck. Go for it.

Gauge plus Size equals Fit

If your favorite sweater measures forty inches across the chest and your gauge swatch has six stitches per inch, multiply forty times six. You’ll need 240 stitches across your new sweater’s chest. This is your Key number according to Elizabeth’s Percentage System (EPS) which gives you a formula for how many stitches you’ll need everywhere else.

Top Down Raglan, Anyone?

Here’s a marvelous online resource for knitting a top down raglan sweater: http://www.woolworks.org/patterns/raglan.html

Pamela Costello gives you the percentage of stitches you cast on at the neck (here’s where you need your neck measurement) for back, sleeve and front stitches, plus instructions for increasing stitches down the front for the neckline. Combine her set-up worksheet with EPS and you’ll knit a custom-fit top down sweater in the yarn, color and stitch pattern of your dreams. Happy knitting!

From Deadly Cancer to Unparalled Triumph, the Story of Lance Armstrong

With his recent unprecedented seventh victory in the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong is perhaps the greatest cyclist ever.

Born Lance Edward Gunderson on September 18, 1971, in Plano Texas, to Linda Gayle Mooneyham and Eddie Charles Gunderson. Eddie disappeared when Lance was two, and Linda remarried Terry Keith Armstrong, whose last name Lance took. Lance did not get along well with his stepfather, having not seem him in several years, and has also expressed no desire to meet his biological father.

Lance was highly athletic from a very early age, as he began seriously running and swimming at age ten. By thirteen, he had begun competing in adult amateur triathlons. He became a professional thriathlete at sixteen, winning the national sprint-course triathlon championship the next year, and becoming the number one ranked triathlete in the nineteen and under age group.

Cycling Career

Lance soon chose to focus on his favorite, and best, event, cycling, and in 1990 he became the U.S. national amateur champion. The next year, he qualified for the U.S. Olympic cycling team, and finished fourteenth overall at the 1992 Summer Olympiad in Barcelona.

The next year, Lance turned professional, joining team Motorola and finishing the year ranked first in the world. His accomplishments that year included winning the eighth stage of his first Tour de France, becoming the youngest man to win the World Road Race Championship, and the first man to win the “Triple Crown;” the Thrift Drug Classic, the Kmart West Virginia Classic, and the CoreStates USPRO National Championship. His first Tour de France was disappointing, however; despite his eighth leg, victory, he soon fell behind, and eventually pulled out of the race.

Cancer and Recovery

In 1995, Lance won his first Tour de Pont victory, a race he had previously competed in twice. 1996 started as another successful year for him, in which he repeated his victory at the Tour de Pont, this time setting several race records, and once again qualified for the U.S. Olympic team, despite recovering from bronchitis.

On October 2, 1996, however, Armstrong was diagnosed with stage three nonseminomatous testicular cancer, which, due to its’ late diagnosis had already spread to his abdomen, lungs, lymph nodes, and later, even his brain. In hopes of saving his career, Lance opted for a more dangerous chemotherapy treatment, and underwent surgery to remove one of his testicles and the tumors on his brain. He was given about a %50 chance to survive. His doctor later told him, however, that the actual odds were closer to %3, and that Lance had been given the higher odds to help him keep his spirits up. In February 1997, he was declared cancer free, and established the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer patients. in 1998 he returned to take fourth place at the World Road Race Championship. The same year, he married Kristin Richard, whom he had met through his foundation.

Tour de France Victories and Divorce

Competing in the Tour de France for the first time in several years, Armstrong claimed his first victory in the race, winning four of the twenty-one stages. He repeated in 2000, this time defeating two of his major rivals who had been absent from the last race, Jan Ullrich and Marco Pantani, with Ullrich taking second place. In this year he also suffered system shock from a car accident, but recovered in time for the 2000 Olympics, in Sydney in which he earned a bronze medal.

In 2001 and 2002, Ullrich again took second place to Armstrong in the Tour de France. He won again in 2003, but in that year filled for divorce with Kristin Armstrong, with her citing the difficulties of caring for his cancer and the extensive traveling. Lance continued his winning streak, however, claiming victories in 2004 and 2005, bringing his total to seven before finally retiring. He currently hold the record for most victories by any individual.

Current

Armstrong is currently devoting his time to his charity foundation, while still competing in various cycling and running events. From 2003 to 2006 he dated singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow. Lance currently resides in a home in Austin, Texas, where he also owns a ranch.

Advantages and Disadvantages With Jogging

Let’s assume you have decided that you want the main element of your diet to be your physical activity and that you have decided on jogging. However, you should know that this is also the cheapest and the most handy form of physical activity, but that it also has its disadvantages which you have to take into consideration if you want to lose some weight or to stay fit.

Doctors always recommend to us that we spend half an hour every day doing physical activities of any sort. They also recommend that you maintain this rhythm for about five days a week, this being the secret to your body staying fit and to your muscles working out properly. Also, jogging reduces the risk of you suffering from heart diseases. But how do you choose the best exercises for your diet or for your everyday sports activity? You probably chose jogging because it is quite expensive to go to the gym, to aerobics classes and so on and because you believe this is the best way to stay fit and to complement the effort you make when it comes to your nutrition.

The most significant advantage of jogging is that it regulates the activity of your heart by establishing normal levels of your blood pressure. Moreover, the American specialists believe that those who jog instead of doing the everyday activities they need to do live five up to seven years longer. Apparently, jogging is similar to cycling and swimming. Thus, the entire bone structure is stronger and so is your back. Also, this physical activity reduces the risk of women being exposed to fractures and osteoporosis. It can also increase your capacity of concentrating on what you do, supplying the brain with the oxygen it needs for such activities. Jogging can also treat depressions and melancholic behaviors and it can also be a very efficient exercise for your memory.

However, there are also disadvantages with this activity and the most important one would be that your knees and your ankles can be worked too hard during such an exercise. This results in heart problems and in muscle problems. Specialists recommend that you visit your cardiologist before starting such a severe diet, your cardiologist knowing how much effort to prescribe and how you should make that effort. There can even be imperfect movements and deformations, which can lead to fractures. This is very frequently encountered with obese people, which is exactly why specialists recommend that the obese people are better off swimming than jogging.

Moreover, beginners tend to overwork their body in order to lose the kilograms they want to lose and this causes damage not only to their muscles, but to their cardiovascular system, too. You should always wear tight pieces of equipment, but it should also be flexible. If you start your diet bin the hot season, you should know that the physical exercise you do in open air decreases the resistance of your immune system and even affects your skin, which becomes dry and dehydrated.

Heating Pads and the Radiator Effect

All personal heating devices, such as heat pads, come with a warning about proper use to avoid burning yourself. Indeed, a superficial burn is actually quite likely if the heating pad is not used correctly.

For example, the heating pad should not be used continuously on the highest heat setting. Nor should anyone sleep on top of one. It’s too easy to either lie too long in one position, or to bunch up the pad, creating an intense heat spot. This can easily cause a second degree burn that includes blisters.

But there is another side effect of extended use of heating pads that is never mentioned. I call it the Radiator Effect.

To understand what that means, we must consider what happens in your car’s radiator. Why is there a radiator in the first place? Simply put, without it, the car would overheat, cause engine damage and render the engine useless.

The concept of a radiator is that a reservoir contains water and coolant; this fluid is circulated, using a water pump, through a system of hoses and waterways in and around the engine to keep it cool enough to function without damage. To keep this fluid in the optimum temperature range, a thermostat controls the flow. If the engine starts to get too hot, the thermostat allows more fluid to circulate. But a certain amount of heat is desirable, too, so when it’s not warm enough yet, the thermostat restricts the flow until things warm up. This is accomplished with a little valve in the thermostat that controls the flow.

The body works in a similar fashion, though the physiology isn’t exactly the same, of course.

When a person lies down on a heating pad, a warming effect is felt. As blood flows through the muscles near the heat source, it also warms up, carrying the additional warmth throughout the body. This leads to a relaxing effect and provides relief for sore muscles, for example. But it happens precisely because applying heat to one area is actually not normal and the body signals the blood vessels to open wide and circulate more blood to carry the heat away from that location. It’s a built-in method of protection. Sort of like a radiator.

However, the benefit is short lived if allowed to continue too long, and the opposite effect is created instead… that is, the muscles become more stiff and sore.

This occurs because the body cannot allow itself to become overheated. Therefore, the blood vessels in the vicinity of the heat source tend to narrow, and the capillaries may even close off circulation to specific areas to avoid picking up more heat. This is desirable only to the point of preventing overheating, but it’s temporary. The discomfort one might feel is the warning to remove the heat source.

But if you’re sleeping, you probably won’t feel the signal to turn off the heat. This is when a burn is most likely to occur and you will wake up with a red spot at best, or a blister, along with stiff and sore muscles. The affected muscles have been deprived of proper circulation because the body was protecting itself from too much heat… a radiator effect, essentially.

Inventor How To – Developing the Habit of Decisiveness

Read about any successful inventor or businessman and you will inevitably notice something: a habit of decisiveness in all that they do. What is decisiveness, exactly? It is a word we often hear, but rarely define. In simplest terms, decisiveness is accepting the fact that you are in control of your own life. It is the methodical, systematic effort to determine the best course of action and then carry it out. Put negatively: it is the refusal to let the random gyrations of society, chance, and whim set your course. Psychologist Michael J. Hurd sums up decisiveness as “trusting and acting on the conclusions of one’s mind.”

Obviously, decisiveness is a quality inventors stand to benefit from enormously. So how can you develop this habit in your own life? Hurd offers some practical tips on being decisive in his article, “What Should I Do?”

When stuck with the question, “What should I do?” don’t stay stuck. Don’t fall prey to the temptation to blindly asking someone else what you should do. Instead, ask yourself — and answer — the following questions:

What are my options in this situation? (If there is only one option, your question is already answered. If there are two or more options, then proceed to the next question).

What are the likely immediate and longer-term consequences of each option? (Make a list of each set of consequences and confine the lists to one page).

Which options are the most desirable and the least desirable, and why?

What is my final choice? (If you cannot answer this yet, then first develop the top 2 or 3 finalists. Then go to a final judgment).

Questions like these will become invaluable guides to action, as inventors face decisions all the time. Which supplier should I use? Do I believe this cost is legitimate? Is this deadline realistic? Do I have too much on my plate? Questions like this crop up all the time, and successful inventors are the ones who are comfortable answering them.

Of course, it will be far easier to ask yourself those questions if you accept that you are the author of your own destiny. As appealing as this sounds, few of us ever fully accept what it means in practice. Hurd elaborates more on this helpful point, which is essential to creating a lifelong habit of decisiveness:

“This exercise is an example of using your own rational judgment instead of letting others tell you what to do. It’s the alternative to both do-as-I-say dogmatism and do-as-I-feel subjectivism. It’s called being objective. Some don’t like the idea of objectivity because it seems too cold or harsh; others feel it’s too hard, or too much work. What’s the alternative? Self-defeating impulsivity? Doing what a dictator tells you to do? Praying to the skies and hoping for an answer in code? Get real!”

If you work at it, you can stop yourself as you are about to fall into these traps. Do you find yourself thinking “Ahh, I can’t be bothered with this now; I’ll cross the bridge when I get to it.” Or how about, “I know this is important, but it’s just such a big decision that little old me can’t possibly decide it.” If you think these thoughts, drop what you are doing and change them. Successful inventors cross bridges miles ahead of them in their own minds and are better off for doing so. They do this by asking themselves, “If I don’t decide, who will?”

So, instead of succumbing to those passive thoughts and letting them move you, take a different approach. Will yourself to sit down and consciously decide the pressing questions before you. If you need to write a business plan, don’t think “oh my God, this is such an important task that the slightest little error will screw it up. I might as well not even try.” Instead, put on a pot of coffee, sit back, and do some research. Read a few sample business plans. Get some expert advice. And then, sit down and write one. It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time, and you can certainly go back and edit. The important point is that by doing this, you have made the decision to move forward. You have gone from thinking to doing.

This same thinking applies to any decision you face. Instead of getting stuck in analysis-paralysis, calmly think about what this decision requires of you. One way of staying calm is to remind yourself that no matter what you are doing, someone, somewhere, has done it before. It may be challenging, but it is doable. You can also save yourself a lot of mental anxiety by asking, “Where do I start?” Once you figure this out, the rest tends to unfold naturally.

Above all, keep your cool and always remember that you are in charge. If you resolve to make this a part of your outlook, it is almost impossible to fail.
