Should Diabetics Eat Bagels?

Should bagels be added to the list of foods diabetics should avoid? Isn’t it bad enough to ban birthday cake and chocolate cream pie?

For many, bagels have long been considered a healthy food choice. Surely the chewy goodness is better for you than pasty white bread. But what if you learned it was worse?

Both bagels and white bread are made of flour, water, and a few other ingredients. The white flour in standard bagels is the same as that in white bread. Nowadays nearly everyone knows white bread is bad for diabetics. It raises blood glucose levels as quickly as table sugar.

So how could a bagel be worse than bread?

A single slice of white bread provides 60-80 calories in the form of carbohydrates. Two slices of toast or bread for a sandwich amounts to about 150 calories. But what about a bagel? A mini-bagel also provides about 150 calories, but a regular-size bagel has 250-300 calories, whereas one of the yummy over-size varieties can be as much as 500 calories! That’s how a bagel can be worse than bread. It’s unlikely you’d sit down and eat 7-8 slices of bread, but that’s exactly what you’re doing if you indulge in a large bagel.

All bagels are not created equal in other nutritional regards. For example, a whole wheat bagel may have about the same calories as a french toast bagel (250 to 300 calories), yet contain only a third as much sugar but three times the fiber. Whole grains take longer for the body to digest and therefore do not elevate the blood sugar as quickly. Dietary fiber improves bowel function and promotes a feeling of satiety (fullness after eating). A bagel loaded with melted cheese will be higher in fat than a blueberry or raisin bagel.

And what about toppings? Two tablespoons of reduced-fat cream cheese adds another 70 calories, not a bad choice for a light breakfast or lunch. However, two tablespoons of peanut butter (or butter, or mayonnaise-based spread) amounts to an additional 200 calories, most of which comes from fat. A better choice would be an equal serving of sugar-free preserves (as little as 10 calories per tablespoon) or a few slices of lean turkey breast (about 50 calories).

People like bagels largely due to the texture. It feels like you’re eating more when you have to chew more vigorously. That’s not a bad thing, especially for diabetics who feel deprived much of the time.

While it’s true a diabetic should avoid eating a giant bagel slathered with peanut butter (a 700 calorie feast), a whole-wheat mini-bagel with low-fat cream cheese provides less than half that many calories and is fair game for the famished female diabetic craving a carbohydrate fix.

Armpit Shaving – Don’t Get Sore!

Whether or not you choose to shave your armpits is your choice. Most women will say that they shave their armpits because it makes them feel more hygienic and feminine. In recent years, men have started to shave their armpits too.

Removing your armpit hair can make it easier to keep clean as hair can trap bacteria which, if not taken care of will result in a bad case of body odor.

Although the majority of women in the western world shave their armpits, most of them are probably doing it wrong. Classic signs are red bumps under the arms, soreness, dryness/itching and in some cases bleeding. These symptoms can easily be avoided if the following precautions are taken.

If this is the first time that you have shaved your armpits, the hair is most likely quite long. This is not ideal as it will clog up your razor. Before shaving, try to reduce the length of the hair using a set of clippers or carefully with a pair of scissors. You need the hair to be no longer than 0.2 in (5 mm) before you begin.

Preparation

1) When your armpits are due for a shave, try and coincide it with when you take a bath or a shower. Wait until the hot water has been in contact with the area to be shaved for at least five minutes before you start to shave. This way, the hair will be nice and softened. This will greatly reduce the chance of you getting a shaving rash or that horrible burning redness.

2) Never shave your armpits without applying some sort of shaving gel or cream. Make sure it is worked into a good lather as this will help the blade of the razor glide over your skin without actually grazing you.

3) Make sure you are using a clean razor preferably with a new blade.

Armpit Shaving Technique

1) Lift your arm and rest the razor at the top of your armpit. If your arm starts to get tired, rest your hand on the back of your neck. Now, apply a small amount of pressure as you slowly and gently slide the razor down in one single stroke. If you fell a slight snagging, it may be that the hairs are slightly too long. Should this be the case, use lots of short strokes to overcome the snagging sensation.

2) Always rinse the razor after each successive stroke. This will clear out any hair that may be clogging the razor. If your razor is clogged, you will have to apply more pressure until you over compensate and give yourself a nasty cut!

3) Repeat the above process until you have shaved the whole area. Now, you will get a much closer shave if you repeat the process but use up strokes instead of down. This will lift the hair slightly and give the hair a closer cut. Repeat the above step but shave upwards this time.

4) If you have sensitive skin or you suffer from red bumps after shaving, it may be wise to miss this step. Sometimes shaving upwards can cut the hair too close. As the skin relaxes, the cut end of the hair can retreat below the skin. As the hair then starts to grow back out over time, it may cause red bumps and soreness.

5) Repeat the same process but on the other armpit. That’s all there is to it!

6) If you manage to cut yourself whilst shaving, get out of the hot water and rinse the affected area with cold water. This will help to stem the bleeding. If the bleeding persists you could try using a piece of tissue paper or a styptic pencil. Obviously if the cut is quite severe you will need a band-aid.

7) Most importantly, when drying yourself after shaving your armpit try to pat-dry the area as oppose to rubbing. Rubbing is one of the main causes of dryness and soreness after shaving. You will just be irritating the area. Simply pat dry the area and apply a good quality moisturizer that has no added perfume. This will leave you with a smooth, bump free, hair free armpit.

What You Need to Know About Eyelid Eczema to Put it to Bed Forever

When most people think of eczema, they imagine it on parts of the body other than eyelids like the inside of the elbows, hands or fore arms. Eyelid eczema is actually quite a common form of eczema and because of the location it is particularly uncomfortable and painful because the skin of the eyelid is delicate and sensitive. The symptoms, causes and treatment particular to eyelid eczema will be discussed here to help you understand it better and thus manage it better.

As with most other forms of eczema, eyelid eczema presents with the characteristic red, itchy inflamed skin. The skin may also be scaly because of dryness and in some cases even weepy with serous matter. The severity of eyelid eczema varies from an uncomfortable irritation to cases severe enough to disrupt regular daily activities and undermine quality of life. The badly swollen and inflamed lids may also have cosmetic complications and can also impact on a person’s self esteem.

Before you consider treatment for your eyelid eczema, you need to be certain that you are suffering from it. You can confirm this by consulting with a professional and get a definitive diagnosis.

The treatment of eyelid eczema is similar to other forms of eczema, but has the added difficulty because of the location of the lesions. Upon applying moisturizing emollients, care should be taken not to allow any to come in contact with the eye and irritate it. After emollient, the next step in treatment would be the application of topical corticosteroids to get the inflammation on the skin under control. This is an effective approach, but unfortunately long term use of topical corticosteroids is not advisable because of potential side effects like the thinning of the skin and enlargement of blood vessels, impaired growth in children and adversely affects on the endocrine system. More modern topical drugs called immunomodulators have been developed that do not have the side effects of corticosteroids after long term use. In essence, the inmmunomodulators suppresses the immune system locally and therefore treats and prevents the inflammatory response. The only drawback about these new drugs is that they are much more expensive than most of the corticosteroids.

Everyone has heard the saying “prevention is better than cure”. This is especially true when it comes to the treatment of eyelid eczema because if you can avoid applying creams or ointment to you eyes, you’d probably want to. You must know exactly what triggers your eczema and avoid it. The triggers may include environmental irritants like common household soap, detergents, cosmetics, make-up, perfumes etc. Allergens are also culprits and include dust, pollen, animal hair etc. Stress also plays a big role in the cause and aggravation of eczema, so it is important to know your sources of stress and learn how to handle them.

Eczema in general is a skin condition all eczema sufferers would prefer to be without, but eyelid eczema is especially uncomfortable for reasons more than just the physical discomfort. If you can learn how to prevent your eczema from flaring up your life would be considerably more comfortable. With the guidelines set out in this article, you should be able to prevent your eyelid eczema and also treat it once it flares up. Good luck!

Asthma Classifications

There’s two main ways that asthma is classified, by the severity of the problems and by the triggers of the attacks. Severity of asthma is broken down into three main categories. There’s mild or intermediate asthma which is defined as less than two asthma occurrences a week. Thirty percent of asthma sufferers fall into this category. Another thirty percent fall into the persistent category, which is two or more attacks a week.

Then, the majority of asthma sufferers, forty percent of them fall into the moderate or severe category. These are people who have daily, even constant problems with asthma. There’s many triggers of asthma and many people will actually have more than one trigger of their attacks. Allergy asthma is the most common trigger of asthma. It affects more than fifty percent of the people with asthma. It’s caused by an allergic reaction to something like dust, mold, pet dander or even the foods you eat. When the person comes in contact with their allergic trigger, the airways can become irritated and inflamed. The result is an asthma attack.

Another category is Non-allergic asthma. It’s when a person has problems breathing because non-allergy related airborne contaminants. This includes smoke from cigarettes, air pollution, etc. The body’s reaction non-allergic triggers is similar to that of allergy related triggers. The breathing tube that allows air in and out of the lungs becomes irritated, so they constrict, fill with excess amounts of mucus and make it difficult to breathe.

The majority of asthmatics have what is called exercise induced asthma. EIA is triggered by running, playing sports or other forms of vigorous activity. It can start within five minutes of starting to exercise or sometimes not even until after the activity is done. The high volumes of air rush in and out of the lungs cause the airway tube to become inflamed. It’s not long before the tubes become constricted and the breathing problems start. Is your work place the cause of your breathing problems? Then you could fall into the occupational asthma category. The cause of the trigger could be anything from powerful chemicals to some other airborne irritant. When these chemicals are breathed in, the airway tubes react by fill with excess amounts of mucus, constricting and eventually turning into an asthma attack.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Vitamins and Minerals – Can Supplements Help Reduce Your CTS Symptoms?

There are nutrients that your body needs.  If your body doesn’t get the nutritional things that it requires, you will have one type of disease or another.

Calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron are major minerals that are required for muscle health and function.  If you don’t have enough, it increases the irritability of myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are areas of soft tissue (myofascial) or muscle that cause pain elsewhere.  The muscles in your neck and upper body can harbor trigger points that “fire” into your hand and wrist–your carpal tunnel.

Calcium is essential (necessary) to the muscles so they can do their best job.  Magnesium and potassium are also essential because they interact with calcium and are related to muscle health and contraction.

All of the parts of your body work together.  So do all the vitamins.  So do all the minerals.

If you take calcium, but don’t have enough Vitamin D3 (the sunshine vitamin) you won’t be able to absorb the calcium.

Without enough magnesium and potassium, calcium won’t absorb properly.

There are many nutrients that we need to function fully and well, and they act together and interact with each other.

Calcium is related to myofascial (muscle and fascia) pain syndrome and that’s the tie-in to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  If you are deficient in calcium, you will feel your symptoms more acutely (sharply) than if you have enough calcium in your tissues.

There lots of foods that have calcium other than dairy.  Dark leafy greens are one.  They also have potassium just as bananas do.

If you have a feeling that you may be not getting all of the nutrients you need, you are probably right!  In that case, you may wish to take a very good nutritional supplement which includes a WHOLE LOT of vitamins and minerals.

If you eat a typical American diet, you most likely are NOT getting all of these essential minerals and all of the vitamins you need.  If your diet is high in fat, highly refined foods, lots of sugar and table salt, that will lead to potassium deficiency and to other deficiencies, too.

So, without enough magnesium, potassium and Vitamin D, your body won’t be able to get all the calcium you need from your food or calcium supplement.  And, if you have vitamin or mineral deficiencies, that can cause your carpal tunnel symptoms and will affect your ability to heal.

Fear of Being Alone – Coping With Monophobia

Due to the deeply personal and sometimes anti-social nature of monophobia, many sufferers of this disorder have trouble accessing resources or diagnosing the condition for themselves. Most commonly, diagnosis of monophobia occurs after a significant lifestyle change that removed a key person or location from their life. While most cases require professional psychological or psychiatric treaments, there are a number of techniques and coping mechanisms that can help to improve symptoms.

Unfortunately, one of the worst things to do when trying to improve monophobia symptoms is to avoid the triggers of anxiety. This only helps to reinforce the behavior and fears. However, exposing yourself to the triggers of your monophobia or other anxiety disorder can be a risky endeavor. If your symptoms have become too severe to handle yourself, or if you suspect that they might become too strong, always seek professional medical help for safety and monitoring throughout the process.

If you find your monophobia is causing increased anxiety, one of the first lines of defense is to combat the negative thoughts or feelings you might be experiencing. A great way to do this is to keep a log of your fears and anxiety attacks. Whether you start a blog, keep a traditional written journal or just make notes on a calendar, this can help you to identify trends in your anxiety and monophobia and attempt to address them.

While it might initial seem counterproductive, allowing yourself a set time during the day for anxiety can help as well. During this time, allow your anxiety and thoughts to run their course, then spend a short time writing about them or noting them. This can help to bring the roots of your anxiety and monophobia to the surface. If you are having trouble coping with the direct symptoms of an anxiety attack, deep breathing techniques can help to promote relaxation and help you regain control of your thoughts and anxieties.

Another great way to improve your monophobia symptoms is to lead a healthy lifestyle. This will reduce your stress and anxiety and help to lower the intensity and frequency of attacks. Regular activity or exercise, a healthy diet, plenty of sleep and reducing alcohol and nicotine consumption can all results in lower stress and anxiety levels. While it is not a magic cure for anything, these simple steps can certainly make a noticeable difference in your day to day living with monophobia.

5 Steps to Calm Anxiety in a Child

Children have a tendency to get anxious and there’s nothing wrong with it. Getting anxious is natural that is experienced by all. After all, it is also an “evolutionary safety survival mechanism,” according to a Huffington Post report.

Anxiety during childhood can stem from many factors – not seeing familiar faces around and presence of strangers at the house, new situations like going to school for the first time, sighting animals like an elephant, presence of darkness around, etc. Developing anxiety from such situations is perfectly acceptable, but, when even a minor issue triggers anxiety in children, it might be a possible symptom of having an anxiety disorder.

When children are chronically anxious, parents play an important role in calming their anxiety. Here are five steps highlighted by the Huffington Post report that can help parents calm their children’s anxiety:

1. Be calm yourself: It is important for the parents to calm themselves, otherwise it will be difficult to soothe the child. Most of the parents start getting tense themselves, which only aggravates the situation instead of controlling it. Seeing the parents stressed, a child always has a tendency to feel anxious himself. But when the parents are calm and show a reassuring posture, the child feels safe.

2. Share an experience of your own: If there are similar experiences of anxiety from your past, try to narrate a story to the child about the same feelings that you had experienced. This will help the child get some reassurance that people other than him are also subjected to such kind of feelings and experiences. Children become more normal if they see that their loved ones have also gone through the same trouble as them.

3. Assure that their feelings are real and that they can cope with them: Validating that their feelings are real and they will be able to cope with them can help reduce stress. Since what they feel is real and not fictitious, it is always important to make them believe that such feelings occur. The Huffington Post article highlighted that rather than saying “there is nothing to be afraid of”, you can say that you can relate to their feelings. You can say something like this: “Sounds like you are very anxious and afraid right now. That is okay. Lots of people feel frightened at moments like this.”

Your words of reassurance can change their perception toward life and can give a completely new meaning to the child dealing with anxiety. The best way to help kids overcome their anxiety is not by eliminating its existence but by building a strong coping mechanism.

4. Help the child relax: It is important to let the child know that he is not facing the challenge all alone. His friends and family are there to assist him in overcoming the situation. You can assure the child by saying that it is like a baseball game. Every player is important to score the winning run. Similarly, being a part of the team can help fight anxiety and overpower it. Breathing techniques can help in feeling relaxed.

5. Help the child counter his overpowering thoughts: Instead of shying away from anxious thoughts, help the child stand up to it. Help the child understand that the little voice inside his head unleashing unproductive thoughts is nothing but a devil trying to ruin all the fun. Make the child think of good things that will defy the negative voice of the devil so that it gets weak and does not bother him again.

How To Use Color To Heal And Ease Your Grief

When the grieving process begins, it strikes hard. When someone close to you dies, a loved family member or friend, the loss of a family pet, your job, relationship or something that once belonged to you, now gone, forever, there can be feelings of overwhelming pain and grief.

If you have ever worked in the volunteer field on friendly visiting or hospice programs you know that to team up with clients is to provide support so patients can maintain a quality life, with some semblance of normalcy on a daily basis. As well, you lend support to family members throughout the entire process should a patient pass on.

For some, to grieve can feel lonely, isolating and often times dealing with grief can be very personal. In a wave of emotions, your thoughts and feelings bubble to the forefront of your mind. It is during these moments of grief and pain one can actively seek color therapy to reset the balance and harmony in life. Grieving though color can help shift your state of awareness and emotion as a way to release and get through the wall of pain by ‘letting go’.

Find out how you can benefit from using color while going through the grieving process weather it be for yourself or to help a friend in need. Let us look at a three-step process one must come to grips with first.

Step 1. Shock and Denial – Disbelief and feeling numb is what you must overcome through acceptance of a loved ones death.

Step 2. Experience Acute Mourning – You must get through fits of crying spells, feelings of guilt and anger, depression, insomnia and fatigue

Step 3. Solutions to Rebuild – Acceptance to go on, allowing yourself to move forward, reorganizing, returning to yourself, awareness of grief and being able to think about the deceased without feeling pain tells you that you have in fact made great progress in carrying on with living and life

There are countless ways to add color to your life when moving through the grieving process. Top five suggestions;

1. Color Visualizations – Restores your equilibrium in the body, mind and emotions.

2. Color Meditations – Brings energy of the mind to a natural relaxed state of quiet.

3. Color Crystal Healing – Allows you to cleanse, clear, ground, energize, balance, bringing peace and harmony to your body mind and soul.

4. Plants and Color – Red to stimulate and energize, blue for calm, bringing peace and help with communication and expression, purple to balance and sooth the mind to name a few color remedies with plants or flowers.

5. Color Essence – can quickly restore and balance your energy.

Now let us get specific, review how the qualities of color are valuable, and can be used to enhance your emotional state of awareness while going through the grieving process.

Rose – Helps sooth your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wounds providing sympathy and solace. Rose is spiritually revitalizing and understanding paving the way for compassion and support with it’s gentle energy.

Red – A color symbolic of what we need to survive, red brings us into focus and gives a boost of confidence when needed. Allow red to permeate your life when you lack enthusiasm and interest for living, feel insecure, fearful or anxious.

Orange – Used in times of stress, or shock, it returns the body to a state of balance. When you feel unable to ‘let go’ of a situation or something, resentment, lack of interest in surroundings, orange gives you the courage to face your fears.

Yellow – Improves your concentration, allowing you to stay alert. If you feel confused, weak nervous or exhausted, yellow like the light of the morning sun, is stimulating which helps the memory function of your brain, especially for decision-making.

Green – Restores your equilibrium. Fear of the unknown or if you feel the need to let change happen, green is forgiving allowing you to ‘let go’ and move on.

Blue – In times of grief, blue helps us to understand that death and loss are cycles of life. Perhaps you feel agitated, unable to express or communicate your thoughts needing peace or detachment, in the color blue you will find solitude and rest.

Indigo – Has the energy where you can draw from it strength to forgive, find peace and allow time for contemplation and meditation. Indigo is especially good when you seek relief of physical, mental, emotional pain dealing with life issues.

Violet – This is a great color for insomnia and restlessness (tip: a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow at night for peaceful sleep) encouraging the flow of imagination bringing ideas into focus. When you lack balance in life or your body, depressed, lethargic and face many obstacles you need to ‘let go’, you will find unity in the color violet, balancing your actions and mind.

Transitioning through grief often requires people to lend friendly support in a time of need, acting as an advisor or personal confident. Just letting those who have experienced the loss know you care speaks volumes. Listening, as they share their pain, allows everyone to express themselves, so they can forgive, ‘let go’, and move on with daily tasks.

Surrounding yourself with color can ease tensions for yourself and family members allowing room for warmth and love to continue. Color, used as tool in therapy for thousands of years and its application to your life when grieving offers much in the way of re-setting the balance and harmony to your life, improving well-being.

Through the eyes of color processing your grief, remember to acknowledge your pain, make room for change, and look to the future to live a full and happy life. Believe in the possibilities and power of color.

Spring Airsoft Rifles – Everything You Need to Know

Spring Airsoft rifles, like other spring piston guns, feature a single shot cocking mechanism. They are almost always modeled after military grade firearms, the two most popular being the M16 and the AK-47. Often made with ABS plastic and aluminum, these spring Airsoft rifles are heavy in weight with full sized scale frames.

They fire with elastic potential energy; a spring is pulled back as the operator cocks the gun and latches onto the rear side of the rifle. When the trigger is pulled, the spring is released which pushes a piston forward causing a large amount of compressed air to thrust the BB down the barrel and out of the gun.

Spring rifles are great if you plan to knock down a couple cans in your backyard or your basement because they can pack quite a wallop at velocities ranging from 300-500 feet per second. If you get hit by a BB flying out of a spring rifle, it’s bound to leave a bruise. With a recommended ammunition weight of .20g, .23g, or .25g BBs, spring Airsoft rifles will easily penetrate a soda can when fired, often leaving a large and nasty looking hole as the BB enters the front of the can and exits out the back.

They are very cost effective since they do not require any external forms of power (AEGs require a battery which often need to be replaced and gas rifles need to be refueled every couple shots), all you need to do is cock back the gun and shoot. If you are looking for something that shoots harder than a spring pistol but won’t cost you a fortune, a spring rifle is going to your best bet.

Dermoid Cysts on Ovaries – Dangerous If Left Untreated!

Did you go to the doctors today and she says you do indeed have an ovarian cyst, actually one of this nasty dermoid cysts on ovaries! Did she say it may have come from the stress of not working, or too much work and your lousy diet and that heredity plays its part as well. Life really sucks! So, what can you do about it besides freaking out, and being worried about it all the time?

Luckily having a dermoid cyst on ovaries is not a life, and death situation. The nasty part about this kind of cysts is that they belong into the more complicated category, for this reason, also called complex cysts. A complex cyst contains fluid, and solid material. In the case of dermoid cysts, they are made of a lot of weird stuff such as hair, teeth, and different tissues. This kind of cyst develops from the germ cell that would form a foetus when fertilized. For this reason, you find all these bizarre things in them.

How would it be for you to know that there is a natural way to treat this kind of cysts so you won’t have to think about surgery that is a quite frightening anyway. Imagine that there are things that you can do from home, that don’t cost you a fortune, and help to to be pain free again. How good would this be?

Just keep on reading word for word, and you’ll find out soon enough what has helped thousand of women to cure their ovarian cysts completely naturally.

As a dermoid cyst is considered to be an abnormal cyst, this kind of cyst is also tested for cancer because it contains solid material that can be cancerous. The doctor will know through the sonogram image that you’ve got a dermoid cyst. Then she takes your blood to test for pregnancy, hormone imbalance, and a tumor marker called C-125 that shows if the cyst is cancer. If the test is positive for cancer, I would always want a second opinion as the test for C-125 can be false positive, that means it is not very reliable.

Doctors usually recommend surgery of dermoid cysts on ovaries when they don’t go away after several menstrual cycles, the cyst/s grow larger, or look strange on the ultrasound. Unfortunately dermoid cysts are oftentimes affecting both ovaries, they come in pairs.

Other complications with this kind of cysts are rupture, and twisting; that often asks for emergency surgery.

Don’t decide on ovarian cyst removal in a haste. Try out different things before such as losing weight, changing your diet, taking high potency supplements, exercise, and learn relaxation techniques. Natural, holistic ways to recovery is the way to go first!

Correct Hoof Angles for a Horse Depend on Conformation

I have avoided writing about hoof angles, because there is not a simple answer that I can give you. I am going to talk about the angle of the hoof wall at the front of the hoof. The angle of the hoof should be the same as the angle of the shoulder and hip. This usually means the back hoof wall has 2° more angle than the front hoof wall.

Every breed type will have different conformation so the angle to their hooves will be different. You’ll want to visually adjust your horse’s hoof angles, but that can be difficult so I will hazard to give you some ballpark figures. A working quarter horse style will usually be 53° in front and 55° behind, those are the most common horses in my area so that’s what I saw the most. Now remember some quarter horses, like the English style, are for all intents and purposes a thoroughbred with a more sloping shoulder, therefore they typically run 50° in front and 52° behind. The Arabian horse will have a steep shoulder, most Arabians I have seen have pretty steep angles on their hooves when matched to their shoulder and hip, like 55° in front, and 57° in back. Some Arabians even go even steeper.

Now if you happen to be trimming a mule I will tell you what my mule’s hoof angles are, they are 57° in front and 59° in back, that is just the way she is built, actually I could trim her a little bit steeper to match the shoulder angle better, but she is a little over at the knee, I don’t want her to be buckling her knees so I trimmed her with less angle. And that is where you have to use your brain, see where your horse is more comfortable, and remember some horses just do not grow or at least accumulate any heel whatsoever, so you probably will never get the ultimate hoof angle on that particular horse. Genetics play a big role in hoof quality and some horses just don’t have the genetics behind them. Some of the breed associations can be thanked for that, they bred for the head and cheat the feet.

By trimming the hoof down to live sole at the toe, and trimming the heels to the back of the frog, you should be pretty close to the proper angle, on most horses. You can check this with a hoof gauge to see how you’re doing. When trimming your horse make changes in moderation, if you suspect you’ve left the toe too long for a while, don’t change it in one trimming, make the changes over the course of a couple trims.

The Best Shingles Diet to Cure Shingles

Shingles, medically known as herpes zoster, is a result of the reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus in individuals who have previously had chickenpox. The dormant virus stays in the dorsal root ganglia of the sensory cranial and spinal nerves. When an individual becomes immunocompromised (weakened immune system), the virus is reactivated and comes out in the form of shingles. Shingle flare-ups can become very painful. One way to alleviate shingle flare-ups and to help the immune system fight off the infection is to follow a shingles diet.

One study about shingles diet suggests that consumption of foods that have a high proportion of lysine to arginine might help reduce the severity or extent of the disease. Arginine and lysine are amino acids; amino acids are what form the protein in the body. The two, however, have different functions. Lysine is gives the raw material needed in the production of collagen. Collagen is responsible for wound healing and plays a part in bone growth. Arginine, on the other hand, is one of the components of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is important in keeping a healthy and normal blood pressure.

Arginine is found to encourage the growth of herpes simplex. Lysine, meanwhile, offsets the effects of arginine. Because of these, the two amino acids compete with each other for the absorption of the affected cells. And since the virus which causes herpes simplex and herpes zoster are related, it is believed that a diet consisting of high lysine: low arginine foods can help individuals suffering from shingles as well.

A shingles diet which contains high lysine includes plenty of meat, fish, and poultry. s. Farm-raised poultry should be preferred than those found in the wild as they contain less arginine and more lysine. Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt should be included in a shingles diet as they are also rich in lysine. Legumes and soybeans are also great sources lysine.

Since arginine encourages shingle flare-ups, a shingles diet should comprise of low arginine foods. Some multi-vitamins contain arginine; these kinds of multi-vitamins must be avoided. A shingles diet should also minimize, if not avoid, foods including chocolate, white bread, brewers yeast, nuts, and oats.

And since shingles is mainly due to poor immune system functions, a good shingles diet must help the immune system fight off the infection. Zinc and Vitamin C are a must in keeping the immune system healthy. Vitamin C is found mainly in fruits and vegetables; oranges, green leafy vegetables, strawberries, potatoes, and peppers are great sources. Zinc, on the other hand, can be found in legumes, whole grains, poultry, red meats, and oysters.

Proper diet is always a part in the management of any disease. The best shingles diet, consisting of foods rich in lysine, zinc, and vitamin C, should be followed in order to cure shingles faster and to minimize the symptoms of the disease.

Taking Laxatives and Birth Control Pills

A common problem affecting people in the present day sedentary lifestyle is Constipation. It is not therefore surprising to see how hugely popular laxatives are. Laxatives are drugs, food items, or any other lubricant substance, used to stimulate bowel movements, mostly to treat constipation. While Laxatives help remove the undigested food material present in the colon and large intestine, their high dosage can result in diarrhea.

The link between the use of laxatives and birth control pill effectiveness

There is not enough medical evidence on the direct link between the use of laxatives and the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, as a general understanding, if laxatives cause diarrhea, they may hamper the effectiveness of the birth control pill on the body. There is a possibility of getting pregnant then, as the pill may not be absorbed the way it would have, if one did not have laxatives induced diarrhea and vomiting. It has been observed that if there is vomiting within two hours of taking the pill, one should consider it as a missed pill. In addition, if one has three or more loose bowel motions for a couple of days, the efficacy of the pills may decline.

The Castor example: A laxative and birth control measure

Castor seeds are used to produce Castor oil, which while being a strong laxative, also has the ability to induce labor in pregnant women. Given this potential ability of stimulating the uterus, it may also give the effects of a birth control mechanism. Although the effects are not proven, there is a possibility of research in its effectiveness both, as a birth control method and a laxative.

Healthier alternatives

While the exact link between birth control pills and laxatives is not yet proven, it is important to understand that taking laxatives for a long period is not a great idea, and is certainly not good for your intestines. What may start as a cure for mild constipation can turn out to be a vicious cycle of over dependence on laxatives! If constipation is troubling you and you take birth control pills, it may be a better idea to improve your overall lifestyle than relying on laxatives. One can switch to better healthier alternatives. Try out the following:

Exercise: Regular exercise and workout will keep your whole body functioning well and in shape too.

Eat a healthy diet: Eating a fiber rich diet with lots of salads and legumes is a great idea to stimulate your intestines and ensure the removal of waste matter.

Drink plenty of water: The ultimate natural body cleanser is and always will be water. It helps flush out toxins from your colon and intestines.

Finally, in case you still have problems with constipation and are on birth control pills, a visit to the doctor would be the best bet!
