Caffeine intoxication is the group of symptoms that arise in response to increased consumption of caffeine. Aside from anxiety and nervousness, a person can also feel extreme excitement, insomnia, rambling flow of thought and speech, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, tachycardia, diuresis, muscle twitching, periods of inexhaustibility, and psychomotor agitation. On the other hand, there is what we call caffeine tolerance. Tolerance in general, when we talk about substance use, refers the decrease in responsiveness of a person to a drug after repeated drug exposure. Daily high doses of caffeine (750 to 1200 mg/day spread throughout the day) can produce complete tolerance. At relatively lower dietary doses, incomplete tolerance may be produced, where there is only disruption in sleep.

So when drinking anything with caffeine, just remember to not abuse it because it has the potential to abuse your body as well.

The Silent Killer! (High Blood Pressure)

The first time I heard I had a high blood pressure problem, was when I took my physical exam. to enter the U.S. Air Force in 1965. My blood pressure was too high to be admitted. It was during the Viet Nam war, and anyone entering the military during this time was anxious, apprehensive and nervous, which was understandable.

What the Air Force people did, was to take me to a room at the back of the clinic, and they told me to lie down and take a nap…and after the nap, they would check the blood pressure again. When I woke up, they checked my blood pressure again, and this time it was acceptable and I was admitted.

High blood pressure has been a life-long problem for me, so much so, that I have never been able to give blood. I’ve had a history of suffering from headaches, hypertension and nose-bleeds. And, I know how it all started. It all happened, when I was eleven years old, and me and my family went to a picnic in the mountains sponsored by the company where my father worked. It was at the picnic where I had an accident, which did damage to the neck and upper spine area, and the injury was never fixed! My evil father had good medical insurance with General Electric, but never took me to get a check-up, despite pleading with him!

I can write a book, on my personal battle with high blood pressure and headaches, but for the purpose of this short article, I’ll keep it brief, and just point out the high-lights and low-lights of my battle with high blood pressure.

One Saturday morning, I was working around the house, and I noticed I was getting a cold and had flu-like symptoms for a couple of days. I didn’t want to get the flu (or worse), and I had an HMO at the time, so I went down to the clinic to get checked out. When the doctor saw my blood pressure reading, he asked me, “Did you run down here this morning? Your blood pressure is much too high!”

A normal blood pressure is about 120/80, and the doctor raised the red flag, when he saw my blood pressure at 180/120! He told me we had to get the blood pressure down right away, before I had a heart attack! He wrote out a prescription for me, and he wanted me to come back the next day (Sunday) and that he would be in the office from 1-5…so the battle was on!

This was during the early 1990’s, and at that time, veteran’s could only get treatment at the VA Medical Center, if it was service-connected. This was also the time, when I lost my first job, and the HMO went with it. Lucky for me, the rules changed at the VA, and I could now get treatment at the VA, to get this problem taken care of.

Without taking medication for the blood pressure, every time a nurse or doctor takes my blood pressure, a red flag would go up! For the next five years, I went to the VA Medical Center to have my blood pressure checked twice a month. I also bought one of those little machines to check my blood pressure at home, too. Over a five year period, we went through about 10 different medications during that long period of time. When the dosage was increased…side-effects set in, and we would have to start over again. Needless to say, all of this was very frustrating for me!

After five years of record-keeping, and I took medication all during this time, the numbers were terrible for me! The average blood pressure for this long period of time, was 167/107, and all this has continued to raise the red flags! Five years is a long time to do anything…and some disturbing thoughts were beginning to cross my mind. All of us have to trust our doctors and medical people, to be sure they do the right thing. The issue here, was the possibility of guinea-pigging and/or experimentation! This is a scary thought, isn’t it? How could I be doing this for so long, and the answer not be found? I was now caught between a rock and a hard place! What to do? If I quit going to the VA, what would I do then?

I think one of the best qualities a person can have, is to have an open mind to change for the better. My father would never be a good candidate, because he was a pill-popper, and expected results of his medical problems ot be overnight.

Throughout my life, I have suffered from crippling migraine headaches, and I was desperate to find a cure! Prescriptions of all types didn’t help. In the mid-1970’s, there were only two chiropractors in this town of 400,000. So, I decided to try chiropractic, and it took many years to get squared away, because I had been having problems for many years. In a period of 30 years, I have been to a chiropractor over 125 visits on my wellness plan. Some of my successes include: high blood pressure has dropped 20 points; I have not had a cold/flu since 1992; headaches are all but gone; nose bleeds are seldom; sinus/allergies are gone; those ugly cold sores on the lips are gone; sleep better, etc.

It all makes sense to me…as the spinal cord is the super highway of our body, and when there may be bumps and bruises, the answers may be in the spinal cord and corrected through manipulation. There are no drugs in chiropractic, and if you don’t have patience, this is not for you.

I don’t exactly remember the year, I think is was somewhere in the mid-1990’s…I was terrified when I got a small stroke, which lasted about 20 minutes! I began to stutter…and I couldn’t pronounce my name or where I lived! The words were coming out all wrong…and I didn’t know what to do! Talk about PANIC! I immediately left the house, to take a walk around the park, and try to figure out what was wrong and what to do! During the walk, I would recite a poem; say other words out loud; and nothing…I was still stuttering! How can I exist with this stutter! Nobody will understand me!

Over the years, I have known a couple of people who stutter, and in this evil society, where teasing and put-down is a way of life…I couldn’t take the thought of it all. Needless to say, this was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life. As fast as the stutter came on…it left, and now I could talk normally! I was over-joyed that I had gotten my normal speech back! I’ll never forget this awful day as long as I live!

In 2006, I was having breathing problems, and was taken (ambulance) to the VA Medical Center. I was told by my doctor, that there was much fluid in my lungs, etc. He also told me that my heart was squeezing at only 18% and it should be squeezing at 60% or higher. A pace-maker was implanted during this time, and the weak heart was probably caused because of all the high blood pressure that I have suffered over the years! When a person has high blood pressure, the heart works all the time, even when the person is asleep…or is idle.

The VA Medical Center has a program (voluntary) called the Tele-Health Buddy system, which I am part of. It works over the telephone lines (wall phone), and the small appliance looks like a small television set, with buttons in the front to answer questions. Questions about the heart rate; blood pressure readings; weight and so forth, and I have to answer questions every day about my health. I’ve been doing this since late 2006, and I like it, because I can reach my coordinator with a phone call, instead of going through the VA bureaucracy, which may take centuries. It’s all in knowing that you have high blood pressure and treating it. I continue to jog/walk 15 miles a week, and the pace-maker doesn’t get in the way.

Over the years, I have never been a crusader for anything. It’s none of my business if a person wants to commit suicide…one puff at a time; one pound at a time; one snort at a time; one drink at a time; or one heart attack at a time…it’s none of my business!

A Look on the Philippine Lime Called Dayap

The Philippines is famous for its tropical climate which is suited for citrus growth. The dry weather complemented by well-distributed rainfall throughout the year favors a number of citrus fruits to thrive well. Citrus fruits such as lime are rich in Vitamin C which is primarily essential in the prevention of scurvy.

Here are some facts about the Philippine lime called dayap for your guidance.

Origin of Dayap

Dayap has a scientific name of Citrus Aurantifolia and belongs to the Rue family (Rutaceae). It is believed to have originated from India, from where it spread to the Mediterranean and then to the West Indies and Mexico. Later on it was brought to the Philippines and named as dayap by the locals.

What does it look like?

Dayap is a small-fruited lime with thin, smooth, and shiny rind. It is circular in shape with 3-6 centimeters in diameter. It has a high acidic content having 7-8% citric acid by weight. The fruit is greenish-yellow when ripe but is usually used in the slightly unripe, which is completely green.

The dayap tree is a small tree about 2-5 meters tall. It has dense, irregular branches and the twigs are armed with short stiff sharp spines which we can call thorns. The leaves are glossy and elliptical to oblong shaped about 2 to 3 inches long. White colored flowers which are highly fragrant bloom from this tree in clusters.

How does it grow?

There are different methods for the propagation of dayap. You can do it by seed planting, stem cutting or air layering. The tree is sensitive to cold. It bears good quality fruits on dry soils provided that it has sufficient water irrigation. Irrigation can be through furrow, hose, or sprinkle.

Uses of Dayap

The fruit, leaves, and rinds of dayap have many uses in the following areas:

a) Cuisines

The fruit lends a nice sour flavor to our local cuisine such as paksiw. It is a good substitute for tamarind as a souring agent. The sweet tanginess of dayap and the refreshing taste of mint complement each other in creamy and rich dishes.

The juice and zest are often used to cut the sweetness of different pastries such as pies, cakes and the most known dessert in the Philippines which is leche flan.

b) Beverages

The dayap juice is refreshingly delicious. The dayap tea, either hot or iced, is commonly served in Filipino vegetarian restaurants. It would even be the complimentary drink in a nature themed spa after a relaxing massage.

The juice and zest can be mixed with rum or vodka to create aromatic cocktail drinks. As a type of garnish, the rind is cut in a long spiral called twist.

c) Alternative medicine

Hold On GM, Just What Is The Real Story With Recall Replacement Parts?

Sometimes you have to wonder if there is anyone actually running General Motors or if there are just a bunch of harried clerks on various staffs trying to make it look as if there really is an automaker behind the front door of their headquarters.

Today’s Mail Brings Interesting Statement

For example, today’s mail brought another example of GM’s “screaming recall management” style – very reminiscent of Britain”s tabloid journalism – except the automaker affects many more people in many more ways.

Today’s edition of GM”s “Screaming Recall Express” would have you believe, if you own a 2007 Malibu LS that you have to park it and walk until the parts to fix a rather major safety issue are available and it is fixed. This time it’s not the ignition, which was brought to you last week by the same automaker and last week’s “Screaming Recall Express.”

Today’s edition talks about the transmission and indicates there’s a major problem that should be fixed as soon as the parts are ready. The only problem, GM indicates, is that the parts are not ready.

To be truthful, here is what GM’s tabloid headline writers seem to be screaming about today. After telling us they have an “Important Safety Recall” to discuss with us, they then tell us the are sending it to meet the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Acting In Response to Issue

The automaker then goes to say this applies to certain “2007 model year Chevrolet Malibus… Your vehicle is involved in GM safety recall 14152.”

The automaker had said in today’s jangling missive that they had “decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2007 model year Chevrolet Malibu vehicle equipped with a four- speed automatic transmission. As a result GM is conducting a safety recall.”

The issue: (author’s italics)

To quote the automaker: “Your vehicle has a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time. When the fracture occurs, the driver may not be able to select a different gear, remove the key from the ignition or place the transmission in park.”

As you can see that does pose a bit of a problem, doesn’t it? If you can’t do anything with your transmission, then the next parking place could be a tree, a bush or a shrub (author’s phrase).

Indeed GM then goes on to stir the pot more by saying if this problem occurs, the “driver may not be able to select a different gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended direction, increasing the risk of a crash. “

GM’s safety scream then goes on to state that “If the driver cannot place the vehicle in park, and exits the vehicle without applying the park brake, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur without prior warning.

Drivers Duly Shaken

Then, after getting these drivers in the dithers of their lives as they worry they are driving death traps, GM says:

“Parts are not currently available. When parts become available your Chevrolet dealer will install a shift cable assembly and mounting bracket. This service will be performed for you at no charge.”

Can’t Have It Both Ways

Again, GM is making it seem as if they are doing you a favor in doing this free of charge, but they have to under the Safety Act.

Here’s what we can’t understand, though, and which has us wondering if the inmates are running the corporation or whatever is going on.

After telling its massively frightened driver body that there’s this really bad problem that could happen at any time – and that there are no parts available – GM all but admits it may not be telling the whole truth when it says:

“If you have already paid for repairs for this condition, a reimbursement request for will included with the letter.” (author’s italics and bold).

This follows GM’s notice that when they do have the parts ready, you will be asked by letter to bring the car in for service, however, if your vehicle has already been services you will be reimbursed. This really makes this issue rather interesting doesn’t it? Imagine what safety experts would say if they knew you had some parts to fix this issue and were charging to get it fixed? Do you think the Center for Highway Safety, under Clarence Ditlow, or the National Safety Council might not be a tad miffed at the seeming misinformation? How about the American Automobile Assn or even Consumer Reports? This is an issue that doesn’t look very good for you as a major automaker, does it, GM? How about the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), they wouldn’t take kindly to it, either, would they?

So which is it GM? Are the parts ready for your customers and are you just dealing them out like ordinary retail parts where you will make extra money, or is this a real issue for your owners? You cannot have it both ways. You cannot tell people there’s a major safety issue but there are no parts and then turn around and in the very same letter tell the same people, they really do exist (if you’re willing to pay for them). Is that the cutoff point, GM? If someone will pay, you’ll install the parts that seem to have magically appeared. It doesn’t inspire confidence in the management of the automaker.

GM, you can’t have it both ways, can you? If you can fix the problem, just do it and get on with it? Or, are you trying to squeeze the last few dollars out of people who are willing to pay for this issue’s repair? It doesn’t make you look very good, now, does it.

Further, how do you think NHTSA would feel if it found out about this issue? The agency would probably be a little more than perturbed about it!

Plantar Fasciitis: Treatments That Work!

Plantar Fasciitis, an overview of the problem:

Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain) is a very common problem that seems to be “incurable” to most doctors and physical therapists. I am going to challenge this belief and show you what actually goes on with plantar fasciitis, and why it is fix-able. A lot of common therapies: NSAIDS/Cortisone Shots/Surgery/ Stretches usually never fix the true cause of the plantar fasciitis, and most people with plantar fasciitis stay in pain for MONTHS with no real improvement. Why does this happen?

The Nature of a Normal Injury:

When you have a normal injury, anywhere in your body, your body responds with inflammation and a whole cascade of events happen (triggered by the chemicals that produce inflammation):

1. The muscles around the injury tighten up. (To force rest)

2. The area becomes hot and inflamed (red and swollen, this is to rush nutrients into the area.).

3. The Fascia (connective tissue around the muscle fibers) also tightens up.

4. Tenderness at the site of the injury occurs. (Pain when touched)

5. Restricted movement of the joints around the injury due to the tight muscles and fascia we mentioned a second ago.

When this happens, the body is telling the person to rest. Usually, guided by pain, we are forced to rest the area, and in a couple days to weeks, the injury heals and the muscles relax and un-tighten, the swelling goes away, the tenderness subsides, and we regain all of our flexibility back. It may hurt a little bit for awhile, but it’s usually “live-able” pain. We notice it, but it’s not that bad. In a couple months, that pain slowly disappears, and we are all healed up.

What happens with Plantar Fasciitis??

First and foremost, the same events happen that were mentioned above. The tightness/inflammation/swelling/restricted movement all happen when you have pain in your heel. BUT, instead of resting and fixing the problem, people push through the pain and try to ignore it (most people have to go to work/school and have no choice). What this causes is more and more damage. This also causes more and more tightness in the muscles around the heel and tightness in the fascia (connective tissue).

When this person finds that it’s no use, and that the pain is driving them crazy, THEN they finally decide to rest the area. They then wait and wait… sometimes days, sometimes months even (in a cast or walking boot). When they try to walk again, the pain… is still… THERE! How is this possible?!?!

They go to the doctor and try a cortisone shot. They get great results, but it comes back a couple months or weeks later, and with a vengeance. They are in more pain, and they are more desperate.

They try out “supportive shoes” and “orthotics” and they feel a little improvement! It helps take the edge from the pain, but the pain… is still… THERE!

They go to a physical therapist and try some stretching exercises. It feels a little bit better, but the results are slow. The person sticks with the stretching exercises and gets depressed because the results are still not there.

They search all over the internet and cannot find new treatments to try. There are magnet therapies/acupuncture/laser therapies/ultrasound etc and none of these exotic therapies seems to be proven to consistently beat the heel pain.

How do you get out of this vicious cycle?? Where is the light at the end of the tunnel??

So, we have a case of heel pain that won’t go away. Like we talked about before, the muscles and fascia are STILL tight. What this means, and this is the most important thing to know, is that when the heel (plantar fascia) actually does “heal” from rest, the problem is “re-created” because of the tight muscles and tight fascia! (They become tight to restrict movement, and force rest. When you move a tight and restricted joint, it will damage itself and the surrounding structures, especially the plantar fascia)

No matter how much healing power you push into the heel area, if the tight muscles around the heel do not relax/loosen, the area will never heal (quite a tongue twister!). It may get better temporarily, but the problem (the tight muscles and fascia) must be fixed FIRST. These tight muscles and fascia cause problems because they pull constant force on the heel, in an attempt to force you to rest. The body says to your foot “If you move that foot, or put pressure on that heel, I swear I will make it hurt!” when this goes on long enough, the muscles and fascia “get accustomed to” staying tight. This “tightness” is great when you have a new injury, but in a long term “chronic” injury, this tightness is what’s actually causing you most of the pain!! The tight muscles and fascia will cripple the way you walk and move, and shoot pain signals to your heel every time it hits the ground.

Which muscles are pulling on what? How do these tight muscles/fascia actually perpetuate the heel pain?

The Plantar Fascia starts at the toes, goes to the heel, then it wraps around the heel and becomes the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is attached directly to your calf muscles. They act on your foot like a puppet, when your calf muscles contract (flex), it moves the foot in various ways. Right when the calf muscle contracts (flexes), the power of the muscle pulls up on the Achilles tendon, and this pull continues to the plantar fascia to move the foot. If the calf does not function properly, or is excessively tight, it places a mechanical load/stressor on the plantar fascia. If you have any inflammation in the heel area, you can be sure that the calf muscle will be tight, perpetuating the problem and preventing it to heal.

There are also other muscles under the plantar fascia that are deep in the foot. These cause the toes to move and also support the arch of the foot. The integrity of the heel and a lot of its strength is given to it from the support of the muscles.

The muscles also act as “pumps”, forcing nutrient rich blood into the tendons and heel area. When these nutrient “pumps” become tight (and in turn less able to do their job), they do not “pump” nearly as much nutrients into the injury (which are needed to fix the plantar fasciitis).

This is all caused by “micro tears” (tiny areas that have been “sprained”) in the plantar fascia from stressing the plantar fascia over time. This is done from over activity (running too far, standing on the feet all day, or from being overweight), from weak muscles in the foot/calf area or from a severe injury to the heel (sports injury etc). Whenever your body fixes those tiny “micro tears” in the plantar fascia, everything should be fine and fixed for good. But! If the muscles/fascia is tight around the heel, they will pull directly on the newly fixed area and rip apart the scar tissue (this is what the body uses to fix these injuries) and you are back to square one, with a severe injury (and LOTS of pain).

Every time the plantar fascia heals, those tight muscles/fascia cause the area to be ripped apart over and over and over again. This makes it seem like the pain will never go away!

OK so they are tight muscles… Why not stretch them??

This is a huge mistake. When you have tightness in a muscle/fascia from an injury, it forms “trigger points” in the muscles and “adhesion’s” in the fascia. These do not “relax” with just stretching. When your muscles are tight after a workout, stretching works great to release them. When you have tight muscles from an injury, you must use other techniques to fix/release them. When you do a stretch prescribed by a physical therapist, it causes these “trigger points” to freak out and tighten up EVEN MORE! This is why those stretches can do little to no help (and cause more harm in the long run) with someone who has plantar fasciitis.

How in the world do we fix these “problem causing” tight muscles/fascia??

Soft tissue mobilization therapies, in a specific order, can fix these tight muscles and fascia very fast and easily. Soft tissue mobilization methods, can release these “trigger points” and “adhesions”. These are done through special massages with different tools (including your own hands).

I always find that plantar fasciitis, in particular, responds better to release of the muscles first, with trigger point therapies (these can be done easily, and at home, with your hands!). Then second, the fascia should be released. Fascia is much easier to release usually when the trigger points are released. This is usually done with “scrapping” the fascia with special tools. This can cause the adhesions that were formed in the fascia to break apart.

If you have pain and inflammation, you will have tight muscles and fascia around the heel, no matter what. When you get rid of the trigger points, you should have ALOT less pain. When you get rid of the adhesions in the fascia, the pain will have less chance of coming back. Next is kinetic chain stretches…

What happens after you fix these trigger points and adhesions??

The next stage of treatment is to do “kinetic chain stretches” that stretch specifically fascia (Stretching the fascia makes it less likely that the trigger points will come back, and also prevents the adhesions in the fascia from forming again).

Also you should focus on methods that break away from the chronic inflammation cycles (by causing GOOD inflammation. Fighting fire with good fire!). This is usually done with cross friction massage methods that you can do at home with house hold objects. This “good inflammation” can cause the body to fix all the damage that has been done. These methods cause your body to finally get rid of the scar tissue and get rid of the pain for good. When you cause good inflammation, the horrible effects of chronic inflammation can be “un-done”. Good inflammation causes more cells to form in the injury, and also forces the body to further fix the injury.

Usually when you have an injury in the plantar fascia, the scar tissue is laid down in un-uniform patterns. The scar tissue looks like mixed up spaghetti with fibers going in every direction. This is great for short term healing, but it is a weak structure. When you cause “good inflammation”, the scar tissue is forced to be laid in the “direction of force” (which is parallel and uniform with the other fibers around the scar tissue). This makes it possible for the scar tissue to be laid down in a parallel pattern, which is much stronger.

What about chronic inflammation? Why is it different than normal inflammation?

When you have this horrible cycle for more than 4 months, the body “gives up” on healing the heel, and starts to break the area down. It literally starts eating the area up slowly because it feels that it’s “no use to the body” (scary but true). This is why ESWT works for some people and prolotherapy as well. These therapies cause a concentrated and localized amount of “good” inflammation to fix the area. These therapies cause a specific type of damage to the heel in order to work properly. They force the body out of the chronic inflammation cycle and into a “fast healing” and “good inflammation” cycle to fix the damage fast (but these therapies do not fix the tight muscles/fascia). Cross friction massage is very effective at doing this also, and you can easily do it at home. Fast AND effective relief!

I like to take vitamins daily, are they helping my heel pain??

I find that most vitamins should be taken WITH a healthy diet. This includes raw foods such as raw vegetables/fruits/seeds/nuts etc. The reason these are so good for inflammation is because they have enzymes.

These enzymes help the body a lot with different functions in the body. This is why my favorite supplement for Plantar Fasciitis is Systemic Enzymes. These cause the body to chemically stop the chronic inflammation. When you have chronic inflammation for a long time, the body has all sorts of chemicals and toxins circulating in the blood stream that are limiting your body’s ability to heal.

When you take systemic enzymes, on an empty stomach, they get absorbed into the blood stream and fix the damage that has been done from the chronic inflammation. One enzyme, called serrapeptase, has an amazing ability to digest scar tissue. It literally goes into your blood, accumulates in the heel area, and breaks up and digests the scar tissue!

What happens if I release the muscles/fascia, take some supplements, and have a good diet?

You should be able to fix the heel pain pretty quickly. I have heard of people having amazing results in less than a week. It all depends on many factors though. What I do know is that plantar fasciitis is NOT an incurable disease, and if dealt with properly, it can be fixed in no time! The hardest part is accepting how bad the injury is, and giving it all the effort you can to fix it fast. Do not ignore the pain or push through it. I know that after months of pain, you will get desperate. If something hurts, do not do it!

Why do regular treatments SUCK?

Cortisone: This chemical causes no inflammation wherever it is injected. This means “chronic” (bad) inflammation and “good” inflammation all cease to exist in the heel area. When the cortisone leaves the heel over time, the area has not healed at all, and it is now weaker than before. So now the person is back where they started (actually worst off because the heel area is weakened), and in lots of pain!

Orthotics: These are great when you have severe pain, but if you think that it will fix your heel pain, think again. All that orthotics “do” is take pressure off the heel and causes weak foot muscles (instant pain relief, but does not fix the problem). When you wear an orthotic for many months, the pain comes right back again (can be weeks, or months, it simply will return if that is the only method of treatment). Supporting the plantar fascia does not fix the pain, it does help though, and I do believe they should be used, but they will not actually “fix” your pain (they do help IF you wear them while releasing the muscles/fascia, then you must slowly stop using the orthotics when they pain subsides). If you have been wearing orthotics for a long time, your foot muscles are slowly becoming weaker and weaker by the day. This does not help your heel pain.

Stretching: Stretching a muscle with a trigger point causes the trigger point to become worst (more tightness). If you have pain, you more than likely have some trigger points in your feet and calf. You must release the trigger points first, and then later on you can stretch the muscles so that the trigger points do not come back.

Surgery: Not needed. And when you get the surgery, the muscles/fascia is still tight, so the pain comes back. Some people do get results with surgery, but not many. It is very rare usually.

Icing: Is OK, and relatively safe, but does not do much. If you just hurt your heel recently, it is good for the first few hours, but after that, it does little to nothing.

Taping: Works great if your pain is severe, but it DOES weaken the foot muscles. So it is temporary relief. I find that it’s great to support the plantar fascia so that you can walk a little further and give the area a “break”, but it will not fix the tight muscles/fascia that are causing your pain.

Ataxia – Any Puppy or Dog Can Have or Get It

The word ataxia comes from the Greek. It means lack of order. It can show up in a puppy or dog, from the age of 3-4 weeks old to its senior years. It is a neurological disorder; producing a steady degeneration of a animal’s motor skills and mobility. In essence, it affects their coordination and balance.

Three Types of Ataxia

The three forms of ataxia are interconnected. They include:

Cerebellar Ataxia is the degeneration of the cerebellum’s cortex. It can and usually does affect other motor skills, most often starting with the head and neck then progresses to the limbs. The puppy or dog may position themselves at a wide stance to keep their balance, goose step their front legs (high step), appears to be stepping over things that are not there, they will in all probability have head and body tremors, and torso sways.

Sensory Ataxia occurs when the spinal cord is slowly and progressively compressed. It affects the dog’s ability to sense precisely where their limbs are and how to coordinate them; causing them to be unable to stand and/or walk with a wobbly, uncoordinated gait.

Vestibular Ataxia begins with the central and/or peripheral nervous system. It occurs when messages from the inner ear to the brain are scrambled. Usually the dog has a misleading sense of movement and/or hearing impairment. To compensate they often tilt their head, lean on people or objects to steady themselves, tip over, fall or roll over. The earliest signs is often noticed when the animal changes in how they move their head and neck.

When it affects the animal’s trunk, they may appear to walk just great, in a straight line, but stumble, stagger or even fall on quick, unexpected turns.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

A telltale sign there is a problem, is often exaggerated movements and changes in behavior. Other things to note include: head tilts to one side, tripping, falling, unable to get up, unsteady, wobbling (appears drugged or drunk), legs buckle, confusion, lack of coordination, hearing loss, excessive drowsiness to stupor like behavior, seizures, involuntary eye movements, usually up and down, drooling, facial paralysis, exaggerated steps with front legs, depression, when walking, (high-stepping or goose steps), crossing of limbs while walking, vertigo, avoids stairs and dark corners, unable to focus on task, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting (due to motion sickness), and coma.

Most often, when the dog is at rest, or when they can focus visually on something on the horizon, the symptoms are not displayed or are not as pronounced.

Sources and Causes

The root sources of a puppy or dog’s ataxia are believed to be from: a genetic disorder (both parents carry the recessive gene), toxins, trauma, virus, seizures, ear infections, medications such as anti-seizure medications containing potassium bromide and phenobarbital. A growing number of veterinarians believe there may be a connection with dogs that have vestibular ataxia, to those that have received the antibiotics streptomycin, aminoglycoside and gentamicin.

Who Can Get Ataxia?

Puppies can be born with it, particularly should both parents be carriers of the recessive gene that causes it. Symptoms may be obvious in as early as 3-4 weeks of age. Others may develop it a bit later in life, and there are those who get it as late as their senior years, where it is referred to as Old Dog Vestibular Syndrome.

No breed is immune to ataxia. However, it most commonly it appears in: Airedale, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Kelpie, Border Collie, Brittany Spaniel, Chinese Crested, Coton de Tulear, English Pointer, Kerry Blue Terrier, Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter, hounds (all types), Jack Russell Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Old English Sheepdog, Parson Terrier, Rough Coat Collie.


Currently there is no cure for ataxia. There are measures you can take to maintain the quality of your pet’s life, for as long as possible. Depending on how severe your individual case is or how quickly the disease progresses. Interestingly, older dogs seem to respond quite well from their particular version of the disorder. They may not act like puppies again, but they can often regain some of their former self.

Following a physical examination, concentrating on your dog’s medical history, known history of their parentage, the dog’s age, time of onset, how quickly the disorder has progressed, and blood work, your veterinarian will refer you to a neurologist should they believe your dog may have ataxia. The neurologist will most likely do a CT scan, MRI and draw spinal fluid, before offering you their diagnosis and recommendations for further plans of action or that final difficult decision.

What You Can Do To Help Your Dog

If your dog is suffering from ataxia, try to keep them from slippery flooring such as tile and hardwood. Even something as small as a scatter rug or mat, will help them get a grip while trying to stand. In the winter, try to avoid icy areas.

Keeping their muscles toned up is imperative. Make lengths of walks and types of exercise reasonable. Stop often, to give your dog a chance to rest. Swimming is a wonderful way to exercise and tone up your pet, without stressing the limbs. Be sure you’re in the pool to support and encourage them.

If possible, avoid stairs or carry them up and down.

Leave a small light on at night or in darker areas of the house, to help them navigate their way around.

Crate them, if they are to be left unsupervised for any great length of time. It will reduce the odds of them getting injured.

Basically, just be there for them, to assist whenever they need you.

Bottom line: The rate of progression and its severity will be the determining factor on how you treat this disease. Talk to your veterinarian and neurologist. Ask the hard questions.

Whenever possible, find out if a DNA test has been performed for ataxia, on both parents of a prospective puppy. Remember, it is a recessive gene; if both parents have it; odds are eventually you will be faced with this problem.

Neuter or spay a carrier. Do not breed a dog that you know is the carrier of that gene. It will only perpetuate the disorder.

Make life as comfortable as possible, for as long as you can for your dog. It may take a bit more effort and sacrifice on your part, however your pet will appreciate it.

Vocal Health Daily Regimen

Having a healthy voice should be a part of your every day routine. Just by taking better care of your voice you can greatly improve your vocal health. If you are having vocal problems and are experiencing fatigue and hoarseness regularly, please see a professional voice doctor right away. Catching problems early is the key to turning them around quickly.

1. Humidity is a singer’s best friend. The ideal humidity level for singers is 60%. Boiling one pot of water in a 600 sq. ft. apartment will usually reach 60% in 1 hour. For frequent travelers, run the shower in your hotel room every morning and evening for 20 minutes with the bathroom door open. You can also use a humidifier, but it must be on all the time (be sure to clean humidifiers every other day with water and vinegar as mold spores develop quickly). Get a humidity thermometer to read your levels.

2. Drink 8 -10 glasses of water per day to stay adequately hydrated (the equivalent of four 1 liter bottles).

3. Do not talk over loud music and try not to “glottal” (strike the vocal cords). Do not whisper as it strains the voice.

4. Do yoga (or stretches) and breathing exercises daily. Vocal problems come from deep contractions in the muscles of the neck, tongue, jaw, back, and diaphragm. A loose and limber body helps avoid injury.

5. I recommend going for massage 1 or 2x a week for the next month – have the masseuse focus on your stomach, ribs, abs and neck/ shoulders/upper back/jaw/throat as well as all over body. With my students, I provide vocal massage sessions to release the jaw, tongue, throat/vocal muscles and neck and upper back and diaphragm – and teach singers self massage to help them stay free of tension as much as possible.

6. Acupuncture for the voice reaps great results. Acupuncture works on the central nervous system and energy centers of the body to get your natural healing energy flowing. Once or twice a week treatments are very helpful in restoring vocal health.

7. Do speaking exercises to find your optimal voice placement. And be sure to warm up and cool down before and after performances every time to avoid vocal wear and tear.

8. Stay away from smoky environments and use Vocal Eze Throat Spray 3-4x per day (endorsed by tons of rock stars). Spray 5-6 times at the back of the throat, tip head back and let it stay for a few moments before swallowing.

9. Gargle with warm salt water daily; use Neil Med saline rinse every day as well (available at most drug stores); and drink Throat Coat tea (available at health food stores).

10. Steam 3x a day – breathe in hot water/steam for 10min

11. Consume foods with a high water content:

a. Fruits and Veggies: Watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, papaya, strawberries/ blueberries (all berries), romaine lettuce, celery, water chestnuts, bok-choy, carrot/celery juice, etc., b. Salads are your new BF. Salads should be your main meal twice a day. Fresh foods have living enzymes and high nutritional content. Great for staying healthy and avoiding acid reflux and digestive disorders. c. Soups with broth base (no tomato or cream). d. Stop eating all fried foods (for at least one month), no citrus, no peppermint, chocolate or marinara sauce.

12. Take whole food supplements daily – Take:

a. A daily vitamin ~ most important! b. Favorite Flora will help reverse acid reflux c. Perilla Sinus is the best supplement on the market for folks with allergies.

13. Natural medicine:

a. Homeopathy ~ Take Sore Throat/Hoarseness (homeopathic name is Roxalia) – by Boiron. This remedy reduces inflammation at the vocal folds. Take 3 days on 5 days off until symptoms subside. b. Herbs & Supplements c. Take Crystalline, non-acidic Vitamin C Powder daily. Take one heaping teaspoon in a 1/2 glass of juice daily. d. Stay healthy with Thieves lozenges and mouthwash and by using Oscillicoccinum and Coldcalm at the first sign of infection.

14. Get 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Sleep is the way your body and mind recharge and rejuvenate. Without sleep, a singer’s voice is always tired which is a sure thing for vocal problems. If you have trouble sleeping, I do not recommend a pharmaceutical solution. Try melatonin right before bed. Usually does the trick. For a milder approach try a cup of chamomile tea or 10-15 drops of valerian root (herbal tincture) in water. A bath before bedtime and/or breathing exercises for 10 minutes will also help you drift off to sleep more easily.

15. Stay Away From:

a. Sugar

b. All fried foods

c. Citrus

d. Caffeine

e. Carbonated beverages ~ all soda and sparkling water

f. Ibuprofen

g. Peppermint

h. Cooked tomato sauce (marinara)

i. White flour (including white rice and pasta, pastries etc.)

j. Alcohol

k. Smoke

A note about pharmaceutical medicine:

Personally I do NOT take pharmaceutical medicine of any kind unless it is an emergency. For those of you who need medication, I don’t recommend immediately going off your medication. I do however recommend getting into health by reading books and educating yourself. Supplement your daily nutrition with whole food supplements and use products without chemicals to get your body back in balance. Natural medicines like homeopathy and herbs are extremely effective along with eating more naturally. It may take longer than popping a pill, but will not create the toxicity/chemical overload you get from pharmaceutical meds. This does not suggest you stop taking medicine prescribed to you. Discuss alternative treatments with your doctor first and visit a qualified nutritionist or naturopath to get off medication long term.
