Health Tips Every Woman Should Use

There are so many things that revolve around health. Some women tend to think that they are healthy just because they are not overweight. However, health goes beyond the weight and there are things that every woman needs to do to remain healthy and fit. Health can play a huge role on how energetic and joyous you feel and it can also make a huge difference to how you look and feel about yourself.

1. Give more attention to your well-being. Women generally have plenty of responsibilities, but it is important to remember your health and take care of it as well. You should ensure that you exercise, eat right and enjoy enough sleep. Time might seem too precious to have time for this, but when you have a schedule in place, you can manage to do it all.

2. Fight off the stereotypes. If there is one thing that can bring a woman down and promote bad habits that can ruin health, then it is dealing with stereotypes and going through abuse, violence, discrimination and inequality. If you are facing any of these damaging issues at your workplace or home, make a point to stand your ground and defend your rights. You can actually make a bold move to move away or cut your connections with such people who do not give you peace.

3. Keep your physical and mental health in check. Alcoholism, anxiety, depression and stress are some of the issues that can get real serious in women. Get help as soon as any of them start disturbing you to keep off the greater risks they come with. A health care provider can guide you through such issues and make recommendations that will help bounce you back to good health.

4. Find out about all health issues that common in females. They include things such as UTIs, incontinence, overactive bladder, joint pains and others. Ensure that you know everything about health as far as family history goes and make a point of having regular checks just to get assurance that all is well. Such checks can help manage underlying issues before they come out in full force. It also helps to know your risks for stroke and heart disease because women tend to be at higher risks.

5. Keep your weight healthy. Maintaining a healthy weight is very important in keeping your health and general well-being in check. Remember that women have less muscle but more fats compared to men, hence you should keep your calories in check. Keep your BMI within the right healthy range, engage in physical activities and exercise and always eat a balanced diet. There are so many healthy foods low in calorie that you can still enjoy and maintain a healthy weight.

6. Remember your reproductive health. Sexual health is usually neglected yet it plays an important role in your overall health. Taking care of it is one of the best ways of how to stay healthy. Talk to your healthcare provider about prevention of STDs, safe sex and even screening procedures that can help you out. Reproduction covers female cancers, menstruation, contraception, pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast health, menopause and infertility.

Scar Treatment – Remove Scars through Herbal Ways

Scars are the fibrous tissue formed on the skin in order to repair broken tissue. When there is an injury, the skin produces more cells in order to re-grow the punctured skin. This tissue is known as a scar.

A scar is easily visible because the cells that go in making up the scar are of lesser quality than the original cells. For example, the scars on the skin are not able to grow any hair since they have no hair follicles. Also they are lesser-resistant to UV radiation.

It is a fact that scars can never be completely healed. There are several medical and cosmetic methods to cover up scars, but none of them can claim to remove a scar completely. The scar can be masked by some methods, like laser surgery, steroid injections, dermabrasion and radio therapy, but none of these methods can remove the scar fully. On the contrary, there might be permanent injury to the skin. On the other hand, Ayurveda deals in some safe herbal methods to remove scars. These methods are generally simple home remedies, and they have no side-effects at all. You can try out these methods before going in for complicated surgical procedures.

Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Scars

– Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis)

Aloe vera is a good home remedy for the treatment of residual scars. Its juice acts as natural bleach. Its juice is applied to the scars, which then slowly reduce and vanish.

– Cucumber (Curcumis sativus)

The cool cucumber helps in the removal of scar tissues also. A paste is made of the cucumber and is applied directly onto the scars. This helps the scars to smoothen out after a few applications left overnight.

– Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)

The Indian gooseberry, or the amalaki, is very important in the prevention of scars after healing. Amalaki is the richest source of vitamin C, which is needed for cementing open wounds.

Dietary Guidelines for Treatment of Scars

Vitamin E is essential in the healing of a wound. When you are injured, increase the intake of vitamin E in the diet. This is available in the form of nuts, eggs, oilseeds, wheat germ, etc. Taking a lot of vitamin E speeds up the healing process. Because of this the possibility of scars remaining after the injury is very less. It must be noted that vitamin E must be had when the wound is still healing. After the scar is formed, the effects of vitamin E in removing the scar are minimal.

Vitamin C is also essential during the healing process. Vitamin C contains collagen, a cementing material that is very necessary during blood clotting. This can be got from most sour foods, including creams. Creams are considered to be best for this purpose. Cocoa cream is very beneficial in the treatment of superficial scars.

Keep your diet adequate with green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Taking a good amount of protein-rich food is also necessary for fast healing with less scars left.

Home Remedies for Treatment of Scars

– Take some vitamin E capsules. Open them and smear the powder or the oil of these capsules onto the scars. This will help the scars heal.

– Aloe vera paste can be mixed with the powder of vitamin E capsules. This can be rubbed onto the scar for better results. This must be done several times a day.

– You can also apply honey directly on the scars and leave it overnight. This application must be done frequently so that the scar gets enough time to get healed completely.

– Put the oil of the tea tree onto the scar and gently rub it in several times a day. The scar will vanish in a few days.

– Alternatively, green tea can be slightly blanched, dabbed onto a cotton swab and then massaged onto the scar. This will also help the scar to gradually vanish.

– Rub ice cubes onto the scars. This is a simple remedy to treat the scars. But the ice must be rubbed several times on the face.

– Olive oil is very good in removing scars. However if you don’t get olive oil for some reason, then you can take any oil and massage it on the scar several times a day. After many days of such treatment, the scar will eventually wear off.

– If the scar is due to a pimple, then the following remedy is useful. Mix a tablespoon of sour cream, a tablespoon of yogurt, a tablespoon of ground oatmeal and a few drops of lemon juice and blend it thoroughly. Apply this paste onto the face for ten minutes. Then wash it off. Do this four times in a day. Remember to use low-fat sour cream if you have an oily skin.

– Cut a clove of garlic into half and rub it on the pimples when you have them. This helps to treat the pimples without leaving a scar behind later on.

Computer Power On Self Test

Once the computer is powered up, the first job is to check whether all the components of the computer are properly working or not. This job is done by BIOS through a series of tests known as Power On Self Test (POST in short form). POST is carried out by BIOS which resides on the computer motherboard. The primary objective of POST is to provide diagnostic information about the computer to the user.

Sequence Of POST

When the computer is switched on, BIOS is activated first. BIOS is a hard coded program, embedded on the motherboard, which boots up the computer. It also store the hardware configuration data. Every-time the computer is powered up, BIOS loads the configuration data in the main memory first and then executes POST.

Computer components checked by POST

POST checks the health of all computer components. Some of very crucial components are checked first. Generally power supply, BIOS, memory, heating and cooling, hardware tests are executed in the mentioned order. Hardware tests include keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer and scanner testing.

Detailed operation of POST

When the CPU is reset, BIOS starts POST execution. Code execution starts from reset vector. In the case of cold boot, the POST is executed from flash memory, while in the case of warm boot, POST is executed from RAM. The first job of POST is to confirm the integrity of BIOS code itself. Once the BIOS code is verified, it finds the size of system memory and runs a memory test on system memory. After that, system buses are detected, tested and then initialized. If any other system BIOS is present then control is passed to it. POST provides an user interface to system configuration. It detects, organizes and initializes all devices which are present during booting. It also constructs system environment which is required by the target OS.

Diagnostic Information

Once the POST execution is over, the result is produced to the user. Basically there are two types of diagnostic information, namely- POST Codes, Beep Codes. POST codes generate a visual symbol of two characters which indicates to what extent POST is carried out. Beep codes occur if the motherboard is working well or if there are issues. In most cases only one beep is heard, if the result of POST is OK and the mother board is functioning properly. In case, POST execution throws a result showing a failure, PC support will be required to fix the issue.

POST Codes

The initial value of most of the POST codes is 00, FF or 88 by default. After the POST execution is over and error code,if any, is displayed, the value of POST codes will return back to 00,FF or 88. Once the BIOS releases control of the motherboard to the operating system there are no more POST codes.

Beep Codes

After the diagnostic tests are executed, a series of beeps is generated by the BIOS from from the loudspeaker attached to motherboard to indicate error codes. Beep codes differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Generally 1 short beep indicates that the computer system is OK while 2 short beeps signal some system problems. In case, if any problem occurs, it should be resolved directly or through remote support.

Statins – A Quick Drug Study

Statins are prescribed medications given to people who have uncontrollably high levels of blood cholesterol. Doctors usually prescribe this type of drug to help prevent and reduce the chances of acquiring life threatening conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

Statin or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are a type of medication specifically designed to lower cholesterol. As the medical term dictates, it inhibits the production of HMG-CoA reductase, which is a big contributor on the production of cholesterol in the liver.

Research shows that people who are taking statin drugs reduce their risk of having a heart attack by about 25% to 35%. Knowing these percentages can bring relief to those people who are stuck taking this meds, but how does this drug actually work?

Drug Action

This drug works by inhibiting the action of a particular enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) that is responsible for building cholesterol in the liver. Thus, statins aids in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL), helps in raising your HDL or good cholesterol, and balances your total cholesterol count.

Ideally, this drug alone can not guarantee that you will have a significant change in your cholesterol level, but with the help of a heart-healthy diet, increased amount of exercise, smoking cessation and living a healthy lifestyle, you can see a huge drop in your total cholesterol level.

Possible Drug Side Effects

Although there are many people who can tolerate statins, there are others who develop or experience adverse effects. Below is a list of the possible side effects that you need to watch out for when taking statins.

Liver Injury – Liver plays an important role in synthesizing enzymes, the digestion of lipids and drug metabolism. Statins are believed to be safe for long-term use but there are some minimal reported cases of liver injury because of this medication.

Muscle Symptoms – Muscle weakness, pain and muscle tenderness are common side effects of statins. These symptoms can lead to actual muscle damage known as Myopathy that is pretty serious. If any signs of muscle symptoms occur while taking this drug, consult your physician immediately.

Other common side effects are as follows:

  • Rashes and flushing of the skin
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach upset

Precautions and Warnings

  • Please be reminded that statins can potentially interact with a wide array of medications. You should always tell your doctor all the medicines and supplements you're taking to avoid potential harmful drug interaction.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this type of drug. Ask your doctor whether you should discontinue the meds or stop nursing.
  • Alcohol may affect the effects of statin drugs. Discuss this issue frankly with your physician.

Drug Use – Advantages and Disadvantages

Rampant, often unchecked use of drugs is a malaise that has been plaguing our society, and especially our younger generation for quite some time. It has grown quickly from a psychological bad malaise, a bad habit to a dangerous social evil, and in many countries, invite strict punitive action. Countries across the world try to combat this evil using combination’s of public awareness regarding the evils of drug use, severe clampdowns on drug usage/trafficking and penal impositions. However, this is still not enough as drug trafficking has proliferated across social strata, and is not limited to isolated groups of the society. So why exactly is drug usage considered to be one of the most debilitating and potentially dangerous of social evils?

One of the most primary reasons why consumption and business dealings on drugs are declared illegal internationally is because of the tremendous damage they cause to the human body. Drugs usually are of two kinds, and act as general nervous stimulants that can almost supercharge the brain and the nervous system for brief amounts of time. For that amount of time, the user has no sense of personal identity and this phase is usually described as a phase of euphoric detachment, while the user loses common consciousness. However, this effect is fleeting and does not last long. Drug-induced euphoria lasts for a very short time, usually culminating in sever hangovers and strains on the human body, which might manifest in physical and psychological reactions.

Drugs are generally hallucinogenic compounds that are primarily of two types, Organic and inorganic. Organic drugs are usually extracted from plants, and processed and consumed usually by burning them like tobacco. Inorganic compounds are much more difficult to obtain, as they are manufactured in pharmaceutical laboratories and are generally available in the form of tablets, pills and fluid solutions. Scientific studies have actually revealed that inorganic drugs/narcotic agents are more life-threatening and potentially debilitating in nature than their organic counterparts, even though prolonged drug use of either could result in serious consequences.

It might be said that drug use is actually dependent on more than one conditions and criterion. There are, in reality, numerous reasons that increase the usage of drugs within a particular demographic cross-section. These reasons could range from social, psychological, economical or just out of biological dependency. One reason why sustained usage of drug is deemed so dangerous to life and health is that it creates a sense of dependency within the user, who feels habituated by the use of drugs. Irrespective of the original stimulus, the consumption of drug becomes the primary objective in these cases, and the user often goes to extreme lengths to maintain the habit of drug use.

Presently, there are widespread efforts to contain if not eradicate drug use within a particular section of the society through governmental as well as non-governmental/individual efforts. General awareness, support groups, supportive rehabilitation centers and clinics that help drug abusers have now become popular, and much sought after to help individuals kick this habit.

Information About Vitamins

Vitamins are known as organic compound which is used as a nutrient in small amounts in many organisms. The word vitamin emerged from two words that is 'vital' and 'mineral'. In the same way a compound is called vitamin when the synthesized process is done insufficiently in organisms and as a result it is obtained from one's diet. So the usage of vitamins depend on both circumstances and on the specific organism like ascorbic acid acts as vitamin C in few animals but are not applicable in certain animals. In the same way vitamin d and k shows their prescence in human diet depend on the circumstances. One should understand that the word vitamin does not mean it has everything required by a body but it contains few of them such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids etc. One should have information that vitamins are used on the basis of one's biological and chemical activity and not on one's structure. Certain vitamins are inter-converted in the body in certain cases.

Vitamins plays an important role in the functioning of human body because of its diverse nature of biochemical functions such as hormones, antioxidants, mediators in cell signalling, helping in regulating the cells of the body, and tissue growth and differentiation etc. Most of the vitamins works as precursors for many enzymes cofactor bio-molecules which acts as catalysts and substrates in metabolism processing in the body. When playing as the role of catalyst vitamins are strained to be like enzymes and termed as prosthetic groups. It also act as co-enzymes for forwarding chemical groups among enzymes.

In war times vitamins are given indirectly to soldiers in the form of white rice, meat, fish, barley, and beans. So now should read more about vitamins to take more advantages of it. In older times disease which used to effect soldiers during war they were used to serve unpolished rice and chicken to prevent from dying as it was highly rich in proteins and vitamins. Now lots of people take vitamins in various forms such as liquid, solid and powder as per one's need and usages.

Arthritis Symptoms: Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms in Women

The first symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may be swelling and morning stiffness or just a general aching of the joints. In 90 percent of women, the first areas affected by rheumatoid arthritis are the feet and hands. The disease often affects the wrist and the finger joints closest to the palm, as well as joints in the jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles and toes. Any joint in the body can be a target.

Inflammation can cause body wide symptoms such as low grade fever, flu like body aches, and a general feeling of not being well. You may also lose your appetite, lose weight, and feel like yo have no energy. Fatigue is a very common symptom of RA and may first overtake you in the afternoon. Fatigue may also be a symptom of anemia, which often accompanies RA. Inflammation can affect the tear producing glands in the eyes and saliva producing glands in the mouth, so you may experience dry eyes and dry mouth. You can have muscle pain and stiffness after sitting or lying in one position for a long time. Depression is also common.

At first, these symptoms may not add up to much. Often a women will complain of joint pain to her doctor, and all that can be seen in a puffiness of the hands, with no obvious redness or warmth. About one-quarter of women with RA develop raised, firm lumps called rheumatoid nodules. Rheumatoid nodules are actually abnormal accumulations of cells, much like the synovial cells that we see accumulating within the joint, but they commonly occur just under the skin. Nodules often appear in an area where there is repeated pressure, such as on the elbows where you lean them on a table, or the finger joints. Because rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease, nodules can show up in other places, such as the eye, the heart, the lungs. They can be very destructive, very damaging, interrupting whatever is in their path of growth. And they can be disfiguring and disconcerting to patients.

Up to half of RA patients can develop inflammation in the linings of the chest and lungs, causing pain on taking a deep breath and breathlessness; rheumatoid nodules can also appear in the lung tissues itself, not just the lining. Inflammation can also affect the sac around the heart, producing fever, chest pain, a dry cough and difficulty breathing. Blood vessels can also be inflamed; a common sign is tiny broken blood vessels in the cuticle area of the nail bed.

You may first notice the symptoms of RA during the winter, and symptoms often feel worse during the cold months and improve in warm weather. While RA develops gradually in about 50 percent of women, with symptoms coming and going for months, a more continuous pattern eventually emerges. This disease needs to be diagnosed very quickly and treatment needs to be started quickly. So that increases the importance of having women recognize the signs and symptoms.

Holistic Medicine As Compared With Other Medical Practices

Holistic medicine is health care that comprises all the aspects of one’ s personality to obtain the optimum state of wellness. It encompasses the process of looking into the wholeness of the person including nutritional, physical, environmental, spiritual, lifestyle and social values. Holistic medicine includes virtually all treatments and diagnosis known to achieve balance in personality. It upholds the responsibility of educating one’s self to attain the ideal over-all health and well being.

Holistic medicine and Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is commonly associated with holistic medicine. By definition, alternative medicine is the medical techniques that are usually not accepted or practiced by conventional medical practitioners. Most alternative medicines are founded to have rooted on unscientific, untested and untraditional principles. Often, these forms of medicine are closely associated with metaphysical components and anti-scientific stands.

Many of these techniques don’t normally have pharmaceutical values like the acupuncture, herbalism, Reiki, homeopathy and the likes. Yet the alternative medicine may also be used in experimental non-drug and drug techniques that are not yet accepted in the medical circles. The future of alternative medicine holds on the potentiality of transforming the “alternative medicine” into conventional medicine since it is now becoming widely appreciated and practiced by medical doctors. In fact, complementary medicine is the term used for alternative medicine practiced in combination with conventional medicine.

Due to these changes in view of the alternative medicine, holistic medicine has become a more preferable option among those who are quite doubtful of the alternative medicine.

Alternative medicine may appeal to metaphysical beliefs and so does the holistic medicine but on milder and more scientifically based approach. Yet the knowledge applied in holistic medicine still cannot hide the fact that it tends to cling to non-scientific knowledge.

Simply put holistic medicine claims to cure and treat the whole person. Holistic medicine stresses out the unification of the mind and the physical body. Holistic medicine practitioners give credence to the belief the man is not a pure physical body with systems and parts that encompass it. Man is also a spiritual being that requires spiritual healing. Holistic medicine concerns itself to the belief of the connection between the spirit and emotions and mind.

The gap between holistic medicine and alternative medicine is closed by the common practice of not using drug treatments and surgeries. They usually employ meditation, herbs, prayers, vitamins and minerals, as well as exotic diets in treating certain ailments.

Holistic Medicine and Conventional Medicine

Allopathy or conventional medicine defines individual health as the non-occurrence of diseases, which appeals to be a negative approach in defining the condition. Holistic medicine on the other hand concerns itself on a person’s absolute state of physical, social, mental and spiritual well-being.

As based on the definition given (that is commonly used among medical practitioners), orthodox medicine remains to deal with one’s susceptibility to diseases instead of the wellness as opposed by holistic medicine. Based on common observations, conventional medicine typically doesn’t apply to healthy individuals. While holistic medicine focuses on the quality of living practiced by people. Sick people normally don’t seek medical attention not until the symptoms of the disease/s are obvious. Thus, there is too little preventive treatment against sickness.

There are great differences between holistic medicine and the conventional type both in the diagnosis and treatments. Most of which are scientifically based. In oppose to this stand, diagnosis in holistic treatment are conceived through the manifestations of body imbalance. These are determined through certain procedures distinctive only to holistic medicine and other related medicinal practices.

People who have already undergone any of these procedures claim that is not bad trying on or all of these practices. Yet individual preferences still have the hand on what will be accepted as the ideal procedure.

Natural Bodybuilding Get Big or Die Trying

The other day I received an email from an earnest young man named Dustin (name changed for identity purposes). Now Dustin, like most young men in their late teens and early twenties, was looking to put on an extra ten or twenty pounds of muscle to fill out his frame.

Dustin like many men his age felt that he was too skinny. He also told me that he had been training for 3 or 4 years with moderate results and that although he was relatively lean, his bodyweight had been stuck between 170-175 pounds at a height of 5'11. I have received hundreds if not thousands of letters from guys and girls all around the world just like Dustin who are desperate to put on more muscle.

Like so many others before him Dustin told me how he had religiously followed an endless array of training programs. Although he had experienced some gains when he first switched to a new training program usually after the first 2-3 weeks on a new program his gains stopped. The situation had gotten worse because at the time of his email he had been sitting at his current bodyweight for almost a year and could not seem to gain a pound of muscle no matter what he did.

Dustin also shared with me that he had been consuming 250 -300 grams of protein per day and performing all his sets to failure including partials, forced reps, and even negatives. In fact, he felt that he has never trained harder in his life and his diet was the best it's ever been.

He tried all the supplements advertised in the magazines including creatine, NO2, hormone precursors, testosterone boosters, and some products whose name neither him or I could pronounce let alone spell. He also poured out his heart as to how frustrated he was as he felt he was doing everything right.

Dustin emailed me because he was considering taking a cycle of steroids. He really did not want too start taking drugs but felt he had no choice but to give in too the pressure from his friends and fellow gym members.

Now before I go into the solution to Dustin's problem let's look first at the cold hard facts that every trainee who goes into a gym today will eventually be faced with. My goal here is to give you a heads up to: the who, what, when, where, and why and how many guys like Dustin get caught up in The Get Big or Die Trying program, which is running rampant in just about every single gym in the world.

This article promises to be a real eye-opener for some of you and it's definitely a no holds barred look at what's really going on in the Whacky World of Modern Day Muscle-Building Mania.

Too quote a line from the Matrix, "Buckle your seat belts Dorothy because Kansas is going Bye-Bye!"

The Biggest Bodybuilding Lie EVER … "Just One Cycle"

Dustin's story is an all to familiar one. It all started when some of the "Big Dudes" in the gym had told him that if he did a small cycle he would pack on another 20 pounds in a month or two. These guys definitely had impressive physiques and they certainly seem to know a lot about training, dieting and getting big.

The bottom line was Dustin was almost ready to say the "Hell with It" pick up a syringe and join the members of the "Drug Infused Testosterone Nation" who can usually be spotted parading around most gyms on the planet like a herd of over sized plate heads. To the innocent observer these guys seemed to be doing okay and they all assured him that a little bit of juice would not hurt anyone.

I really felt for Dustin's situation as I reflected back on my own journey in the bodybuilding industry. I myself have been in Dustin's situation, as have millions of young men and women around the world.

Unfortunately business these days is booming thanks to the "Drug dealers" around the world who have used this one cycle pitch since drug dealing began. It's no secret that this pitch is convincing and bodybuilders have been falling for this line since the invention of the barbell.

Lets' face it the bodybuilding industry has taken a major nosedive ever since Dorian Yates ushered in the era of "Chemical Warfare". While drug use was prevalent amongst the top pros and amateurs in the 70's and 80's, the 90's began the era where you simply take as many chemicals as you can afford, lift as heavy as you can, and hope like hell you do not get sick, busted, or completely destroy your health.

Unfortunately, this insane quest for size has extreme costs as evidence by the rash of professional and amateur bodybuilders who have died, messed up their health permanently, or ended up in prison. The reality is few individuals consider the Big Picture when it comes to their training programs, diet, health or the real costs of "juicing" even if it's for "just one cycle".

The facts are one cycle leads to another, and another, and another because drugs can not replace real training science, quality nutrition, the drive, focus, time and commitment it takes to build a truly awesome physique. Although drugs might seem like a quick fix to the Dustin's current weight gain challenges. There not! In fact the first cycle is usually the first step into the underground steroid subculture. Let's have a look at the players in this deadly game but be forewarned this could get messy before I'm done talking!

Tattoos and Diabetes

I was recently asked a question on our website that I thought deserved a lengthy answer.

J.C. of Buffalo, NY asks: “I have diabetes and I take insulin. Is there any reason I should be concerned about getting a tattoo?”

So, J.C, you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, but you have diabetes. Is this a good idea? Well, in most cases it’s not a problem. But there are some things you should be thinking about before during and after the inking process.

During my 18 years in podiatric practice I thought I had seen everything, that is until one day I was called to the emergency department for a consultation. A 45 year old female diabetic patient decided to get a tattoo on the top of her foot. She said she thought nothing of it at the time. It was a rendering of her late cat whom she loved so much. About 3 days after the inking she began to develop some redness around the site. She followed the directions given to her, but the redness got worse. She applied more ointment but now she could see the redness spreading away from the tattoo. She consulted her tattoo artist who intuitively had her call her physician who sent her immediately to the emergency department.

A tattoo for all practical purposes is an intentional wound. This young woman had gotten an infection and because she had the circulation of an 80 year old and because of neuropathy she did not feel any pain. What she did have was an abscess on the top of her foot. This led to the circulation becoming worse leading to gangrene of the toes. She ultimately lost half her foot. I was able to save the remaining foot, by cleaning out the infected bone and soft tissue, and using high tech state of the art wound healing products and treatments.

Let’s discuss a little about diabetes first. Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic foot and leg amputations in the United States and approximately 14 to 24 percent of patients with diabetes who develop a foot ulcer and infections go on to have an amputation. Research, however, has shown that the development of a foot ulcer is preventable.

Anyone who has diabetes can develop a foot ulcer or an infection. Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and older men are more likely to develop ulcers. People who use insulin are at a higher risk of developing a foot ulcer, as are patients with diabetes-related kidney, eye, and heart disease. Being overweight and using alcohol and tobacco also play a role.

Diabetic complications develop due to a combination of factors, such as lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation (such as friction or pressure), and trauma, as well as duration of diabetes. Patients who have diabetes for many years can develop neuropathy, a reduced or complete lack of feeling in the feet and legs due to nerve damage caused by elevated blood sugar levels over time. The nerve damage often can occur without pain and one may not even be aware of the problem. “

“Vascular disease can complicate a healing tattoo, reducing the body’s ability to heal and increasing the risk for an infection. Elevations in blood glucose can reduce the body’s ability to fight off a potential infection and also slow down the entire healing process.”

Most tattoos do not get infected; however if your physician diagnoses an infection, a treatment program of antibiotics, wound care, and possibly hospitalization will be necessary.

There are several important factors to keep a tattoo from becoming infected:

  • Keep blood glucose levels under tight control
  • Keep the tattoo clean and bandaged.
  • Cleanse the tattoo daily, using a wound dressing or bandage.
  • The science of wound care has advanced significantly over the past ten years. The old thought of “let the air get at it” is now known to be harmful to healing. We know that wounds including tattoos and ulcers heal faster, with a lower risk of infection, if they are kept covered and moist. The use of full strength betadine, peroxide, whirlpools and soaking are not recommended, as this could lead to further complications.

Appropriate wound management includes the use of dressings and topically-applied medications. These range from normal saline to advanced products that have been shown to be highly effective in healing problem tattoos.

For a tattoo to heal there must be adequate circulation to the inked area. A circulation specialist (vascular surgeon) or a podiatrist can determine circulation levels in the feet and legs with noninvasive tests.

Healing time depends on a variety of factors, such as tattoo size and location, pressure on the area from walking or standing, swelling, circulation, blood glucose levels, wound care, and what is being applied to the wound. Healing may occur within weeks or require several months.

The key to successful tattoo healing is to ensure the following “gold standard” of care:

  • lowering blood sugar
  • treating any infection

    Divorce in the UAE

The purpose of the Family Guidance Committee is to try and reconcile the parties before separating them under Article 98 of the Personal Status Law. The family guidance counselors are not legally trained, but have experience in mediation and counseling.

For Muslims in the UAE, divorce is the cancelling of the valid contract of marriage between the parties. The divorce can be commenced by the husband, or by the wife if her husband gave her the right to do so (Isma’) in the marriage contract. If the wife is not given the right to divorce the husband within her marriage contract, she may still do so for reasons of ‘harm’. The definition of harm is wide ranging and includes the 7 grounds for divorce set out below.

There are 2 routes to obtain a divorce:

    1. The first is by pronouncing the ‘Talaq’ (which means ‘I divorce you’ in Arabic). The husband or wife (if she has ‘Isma’) must say or write ‘I divorce you’ or ‘Talaq’ in the presence of a witness. For Muslims, religiously this is a valid method of divorce however, for the divorce to be legally recognized it should be registered with the court, this allows documentary evidence of the divorce to be relied upon in court in the future. (Article 106 Personal Status Law states ‘divorce is considered valid when… the judge authenticates it’). If there is a dispute as to whether the Talaq was pronounced, the witness would be able to give evidence at court. There are financial implications for a spouse that commences a divorce by pronouncing the Talaq without the consent of their spouse.

    2. The second method of obtaining a divorce is by application to court (‘separation by way of a judgment’). The applicant will issue a divorce case and the parties will be referred to the Family Guidance Committee, which forms part of the court.

The purpose of the Family Guidance Committee is to try and reconcile the parties before separating them under Article 98 of the Personal Status Law. The family guidance counselors are not legally trained, but have experience in mediation and counseling. They meet with both parties and if there cannot be reconciliation, the matter is referred to a judge. The judge will then decide whether there is a valid reason for the divorce. These include:

    1. Separation due to defects

    a. Defects such as madness, leprosy, impotence and venereal disease: A party can only rely on such ‘defects’ as a ground for divorce if they were not aware of the defect at the time of marriage. It is possible for the court to adjourn the case for a period of up to a year to determine whether the defect is capable of being ‘removed’ (Article 113 Personal Status Law).

    b. Deceit: if there has been serious deceit between the parties during the formation of the marriage. Therefore, if one party would not have entered into the marriage contract had they been aware of the deceit, they are entitled to use this as a basis for divorce (Article 114 Personal Status Law).

    2. Separation for non -payment of the current dowry (‘Mokadam’)

    3. Separation due to harm or disputes. One spouse has the right to ask for divorce if he or she is being harmed by the other, and such harm makes it impossible for the parties to live together (Article 117 Personal Status Law). In this situation, the court may instruct two arbitrators to investigate the reasons for the discord between the parties and report back to the court. A finding of fault on one party may have financial implications.

    4. Separation due to lack of financial support during the marriage: a wife is entitled to ask for a divorce if the court decides that the husband has funds to support her but has failed to do so.

    5. Separation due to absence of one party: a wife may be entitled to divorce if her husband has disappeared. However, the divorce judgment would not be pronounced until a year has passed from the date of her application for divorce, without the husband returning during this time.

    6. Separation due to jail sentence: a wife is entitled to divorce if her husband is sentenced to more than 3 years in prison and at the time of the divorce he has been in prison for more than one year.

    7. Separation due to desertion (‘Hajr’): if the husband leaves the family home and does not return within 4 months of the wife’s request, she is entitled to a divorce.

The waiting period (‘Eddah’) is an important concept within Muslim divorces. This a 3 month period that commences after the Talaq has been pronounced by the court. If the wife is pregnant, the waiting period does not conclude until after she has given birth. During the waiting period, the wife must stay single. The purpose of the waiting period is to ensure that the wife is not pregnant, but is also a period of reflection for the parties to decide whether there is a chance for reconciliation. The husband provides expenses to the wife during the waiting period, regardless of who initiated the divorce proceedings.

There are 2 types of divorce, revocable and irrevocable. The revocable divorce will allow the parties to maintain a valid marriage, until the conclusion of the waiting period. After this period, if they wish to reconcile, they must do so by entering into a new marriage contract.

The irrevocable marriage divorce ends the marriage as soon as it has happened. There are two types of irrevocable divorce, the irrevocable divorce with small ‘intent’, where the divorced woman can reconcile with her husband only with a new marriage contract and dowry, or the irrevocable divorce with ‘big intent’ where the divorced woman can only return to her husband after marrying another husband, having sexual intercourse with him, divorcing him and waiting until the conclusion of that period.

    The Choking Game

Parents Have You Heard of This? New Trend or Not?

Parents heads up! The Choking Game is played by children by the dozens. From young grade schoolers to college students this deadly game children play is almost always unheard of by parents. It is the number one comment parents make when their child dies from this terrible game. "I have never heard of it." Kids do not call it "The Choking Game." We do, parents and the media, etc.

Children can call this game any of the following terms: "The Fainting Game, Airplaning, America Dream Game, Black Out Game, Breath Play, California Choke, California Dreaming, California High, California Knockout, Choke Out, Dream Game, Dreaming Game, Flatline Game, Flat Liner, Flatliner Game, Funky Chicken, Harvey Wallbanger, Hyperventilation Game, Knockout Game, Pass-out Game, Passing out Game, Natural High, Sleeper Hold, Space Cowboy, Space Monkey, Suffocation Game, Suffocation Roulette, Teen Choking Game, Rising Sun, High Riser, Tingling Game, Trip to Heaven, and a Rocket Ride. "

So if you hear these terms from your kids or their friends it's time to pay attention, before it is too late and you lose a child to this deadly game.

    What is "The Choking Game"?

Self-asphyxiation-choking each other or themselves, which produces a kind of high. By pressing someone up against a wall by the neck, until they lack oxygen, or until they passed out. Likely they repeat it over and over again for hours. They use bags, belts, ties, or even their own bare hands, causing hypoxia, a shortage of oxygen. Basically, it's a very dangerous play where the person deprives his brain of oxygen. By reducing the blood pressure the brain basically starts an irreversible process of dying. The variation in blood pressure may also cause strokes, seizures, and retinal damage.

There is inadequate research on the practice, but medical and forensic experts estimate that 250 to 1,000 young people die in the United States each year from some variant of the choking game. Many are reported as suicides.

What Attracts Teens to this Game?

The attractions are numerous. It is done as a dare. It can induce a brief sense of euphoria. It has been reported to enhance erotic feelings. It is amusing to some to watch others losing consciousness or behaving erratically, the prospect of an altered state of consciousness, the experience of a "brownout," (meaning: Brownout may refer to a dimming of the vision caused by loss of blood pressure or hypoxia,) or more recently, copy-catting elements of the film "Flatliners."

Children and teens are turning to this type of high more and more as opposed to drugs or alcohol.

    Warning Signs

    – Bloodshot eyes

    – Marks on the neck

    – Complaints of headaches

    – Ties, ropes, string, or computer cords tied in unusual ways

    – Check closets

    – Check behind closed doors

Talk with children / teens about dangerous games, just as you would about smoking or drugs. Be firm and serious in discussions. Children have no clue about the physiological principles involved and need to be told by the adults in their lives how dangerous it is to give in to peer pressure or to try dangerous things out of boredom. Also, most children have no concept of their own mortality. They truly believe nothing can hurt them. If you suspect your child is participating in "The Choking Game," please seek professional counseling.

    Early Diagnosis For Breast Cancer

With the advances in cancer research and an aggressive media campaign to provide breast cancer info to the general public many more women are seeking early diagnostic exams and helping to lower the instances of mortality, which breast cancer statistics are showing. However, less than 20 years ago, many more women were finding cancer diagnosis’s after the cancer had taken hold and spread to other organs, and limiting the chances of surviving the initial disease.

One of the steps in an early diagnosis of this cancer is self-examination. The techniques used to find small abnormalities in the breast are making a great difference for many women. Finding these small lumps in the breast can greatly increase the efficacy of the least invasive surgeries and limit the need for some breast cancer medication. Although these medications have been refined there are still debilitating side effects, so early detection in most cases limits their use and greatly improves the overall health of women diagnosed with cancer.

Self examination training can be found on many medical websites but it is best to talk to your doctor and learn the correct procedures. Women also need to know to look for more than just lumps. Any change in the shape or size of the breasts must also be noted and can only be detected if the self-exam is conducted on a regular basis.

One of the ways to do this is to stand in front of a mirror, with arms relaxed at your sides. Now, look at both breasts, but don’t be alarmed if they are slightly different in size, most women’s breasts are not identical. Look for changes like puckering around the nipples, differences in color, or sores. Now, bend forward facing the mirror and roll your shoulders and elbows forward to tighten your chest muscles and look for changes in contour. Do the same looking at each side carefully for these abnormalities.

Once you have visually checked your breasts and noted any changes or problems identified above, it is time to feel for thickening or lumps under the skin. For the best results, it is best to have your doctor explain all the steps to make sure you are doing this part of the exam correctly. In all cases the technique and steps are paramount in finding cancer early.

Finding a lump or other abnormalities doesn’t always indicate that cancer is present. Women of all ages can find benign fibrous tumors or cysts caused by any number of reasons. However, only through a doctor’s evaluation can these be determined. And if cancer is the diagnosis there have been huge advances in breast cancer medication and treatments that have saved thousands of lives. The most important factor in cancer survival rates is seeking medical treatment as soon as possible. The earlier that treatment can take place the better the overall chances for survival and in many cases total remission.

Early diagnosis does begin with the individual and with the internet there is reliable breast cancer info to be found. And if one is to research further they will find that breast cancer statistics have greatly improved in the areas of mortality over the last 10 to 15 years. This is good news for thousands of women and their families and a triumph for the doctors and researchers that have worked tirelessly to prevent early death from cancer.

Handicapped Equipment to Improve Quality of Life

You can live an excellent quality of life even with a handicap by choosing the right handicapped equipment made for your needs. The better the match, the better you’ll be able to handle and control the things in your life. But first, you need to talk to your doctor, find out what your personal needs are and if your handicap is permanent or temporary.

Talk to your doctor about their recommendations, what your handicapped status is and then you can create a plan. You need to be vocal in expressing your own concerns because you know your body limitations better than your doctor. If you are unable to walk more than 50 feet or if you are unable to walk up stairs without a lot of strain, inform your doctor.

Now your personal needs are usually the things you do, from the moment you get up, to the time you sleep. Ask yourself questions like, Do I need help getting up from the bed? Can I walk or stand on my own legs for long periods? How can I get to my destinations like work or school? Am I able to get or reach a particular item? Answer these questions and you will be better equipped to purchase handicapped equipment.

For a temporary disability, you might want to rent or buy used handicapped equipment. You will eventually regain your previously lost abilities with time. A temporary handicap does not usually require anything permanently installed. In fact, if you install something permanent, that installation might eventually become a hindrance in your place of living.

With a permanent disability, do not hold back on anything. The handicap is a part of your life but it does not have to control your life. Create an environment where you are most comfortable and without fear. Install a stair lift to get from the top floors and to go down to the bottom floors. Set up your bathroom so you can easily access the shower handles and faucets. Build a handicapped accessible entrance way with a handicap ramp. These are only a few of the simple things you can do to improve your quality of life.
