Does Your Dog Have Epilepsy?

What is epilepsy?

It is a condition of recurring seizures wherein uncoordinated firing of the neurons in the cerebrum takes place. In dogs, it is not fully understood but it has some similarities with the causes in human beings. Neurotransmitters are chemically imbalanced so the nerves are uncoordinated. An epileptic dog will show uncoordinated firing of the neurons within his brain. These are called seizures, also known as fits or convulsions. It usually starts in dogs at the age of 6 months to 5 years.

Different types of Epilepsy:

1. Idiopathic Epilepsy- The cause is unknown, it may be inherited.

2. Secondary Epilepsy – Normally, a vet will run some tests to rule out possible toxic, or physiological causes before he makes his diagnosis as the dog having idiopathic version. There are many types of seizures seen in dogs and often, the owner is not aware of his pet’s condition. Epileptic seizure is the abnormal brain activity manifested in the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex. These abnormalities that cause convulsions vary from petit mal to generalized, full body grand mal.

4 stages of seizure:

1. The Prodome – It lasts from minutes to hours and sometimes days before the actual convulsion. The dog will show changes in his behavior or mood.

2. The Aura – The owner will notice the initial signs during this stage. Some pet dogs will begin trembling, salivating, licking, pacing, wandering aimlessly, hiding, urinating, or whining. Some other dogs may show stranger behaviors like excessive barking and attempts to get the owner’s attention.

3. The Ictus – This is the actual seizure stage, wherein the dog may lose consciousness, gnash his teeth, thrashing about his legs and head, crying, drooling, losing bladder and bowel control, and paddling his feet like he is running. Some stranger types of seizures in dogs will make the dog suddenly go blank and just stare into space, while others will frantically run in circles. The ones with partial seizures will experience twitching in one area of his body only, it could be in one leg, his face, in his hips, or in the shoulder.

4. The Ictal – It happens just after a convulsion. The dog will act like he’s doped, drunk, deaf, or blind. Some dogs may endlessly pace, or drink lots of water. Others pass out and sleep.

Causes of seizures

Seizures can be caused by many conditions: Liver disorders Brain tumors Congenital defects Low sugar (hypoglycemia) or conditions like diabetes mellitus Fever or hyperthermia Heart problems, difficulty breathing, or anemia Kidney disorders Brain damage resulting from trauma or poor blood flow to the brain Infections like canine distemper Low calcium in females that are nursing young Toxins such as antifreeze, chocolate, or lead Primary / idiopathic epilepsy Certain medications the dog is taking What triggers a seizure?

It is unknown but a lot of dogs experience convulsions when excited. Very often, the dog seizures while playing, or when children have just returned from school. One dog had seizures after visiting the vet hospital. Other dogs have seizures while asleep. Do not confuse this with dreaming since it is not uncommon for dogs to shake or bark while asleep. You can awaken a dreaming dog, but not a dog having seizures.

How is epilepsy diagnosed?

Firstly, the vet will obtain detailed history. Neurologic, physical exams, and laboratory tests are then be performed. Sometimes x-rays are also taken. If the vet cannot identify the cause of the convulsion, the condition is then diagnosed as idiopathic. No test is yet available to diagnose epilepsy per se, the tests simply rule out the other causes of convulsions.

What type of facts about your dog can you hand to your vet to help make the diagnosis?

It is useful if you, the pet owner, can provide your vet answers to the following questions: How does your pet look like when he is having convulsions? How frequently do convulsions happen? What is duration of each convulsion? Observe both sides of your dog if there are symptoms that appear on one side only. Does one side appear much worse? Does your pet dog has hyperthermia? Has he been exposed to poisonous substance? Has your pet undergone any traumatic experience lately or many years ago? Is your pet updated on vaccinations? Has your pet been boarded lately or with other dogs? Has your pet been sick? In the past weeks, has he been running loose? When and what does he eat? Has he been acting strange lately or did you notice any changes in behavior? Do the convulsions happen in related pattern to certain activities such as eating, sleeping, or exercise? Does your pet exhibit unalike signs right before or right after convulsions?

Do some dogs have more tendency of having epilepsy?

Usually, epilepsy begins to show at 6 months to 5 years of age, typically at 2-3 years. It happens in all dog breeds, that includes the mixed breeds. Epilepsy can be familial, it can be passed on through generations. The Golden Retrievers, Labrador, Cockers, Dachshunds, German Shepherd, Collies, Poodles, Irish Setters, St. Bernards, Beagles, Malamutes and Huskies, Springers are some of the dog breeds with high tendency to have epilepsy. Since epilepsy can be inherited, the dogs which has it should not be used to breed.

Treatment begins when convulsions are patterned, multiple and severe. You should know your pet dog’s pattern so your vet can judge if the treatment helps.

There is no known cure for epilepsy. The aim is to reduce the prevalence, duration, and severity of the convulsions. Oral medications are given to treat epilepsy. Dogs show nonidentical responses to the medicines. The vet may try various combinations of medications to see which is right for your pet. On the start of the medication, most dogs will feel sleepy, but eventually this wears off in a matter of weeks.

The usual drugs used to restrain epilepsy are Phenobarbital and Potassium bromide. They may be used as a single drug or in combination. They should be administered daily. Before putting the dog on phenobarbital medication, he should have his lab test. Blood levels are also regularly taken. Do not skip or discontinue the medication once it has been introduced, otherwise severe convulsions could result. Almost all dogs taking anticonvulsant will have to continue taking it for life. Some other drugs used for the treatment of epilepsy are carbamazepine, felbamate, primidone, valporic acid, chlorazepate, gabapentine, and clonazepam. Intravenous drugs like valium for fast effect are given to dogs with prolonged convulsions or also known as Status.

Anti-epileptic drugs like phenobarbital may have side effects on liver if high dosage is required. Prior to increasing dosage, liver function test must be taken just to be sure you are on the safe side. Although liver damage is rarely seen even at high levels. It is usual for a dosage level to be effective for a period of time and then the convulsions will multiply in frequency and duration. The dosage then may be increased. On the other hand, if the dog does not exhibit seizures, the dosage may be lowered and still control the convulsions. Keep a calendar of the convulsions with the date and their duration. This will help in determining if there are adjustments needed.

What must I do if my pet dog is having convulsions?

Stay calm. Never put your hand in your dog’s mouth. You may get bitten! And it does not help your dog. Put away sharp objects nearby such as tables and chairs to prevent injuries. Place the dog on the floor carefully if he is in a couch or bed to prevent falls. Clear the area of other pets and children. Watch your dog closely and get in touch with your vet if the convulsions last more than 3 minutes or if he has recurring seizures for this is a medical emergency and could be fatal. One mild seizure is not considered an emergency and does not need long term medication. Although you should still report it to your vet. Be sure to record the date, time and duration of the seizure.

MOVING TO CANADA IS A JOKE … The Economic, Military, and Social Integration of North America

Eh? I can think of scores of reasons to move to Canada (or opt for the Mexican Riviera). . . any place but Babylon the Great: The USA. The War in Iraq. . . or better yet: The entire Military-Industrial Complex sucking the life-blood out of Americana for starters. Or, how about the whole hedonistic culture of greed, avaricious appetites, and super sizing all things godly and ungodly – from Hollywood to Mega Churches; indeed, ours is a "city set on a hill which can not be hid" but the closer you get to this glittering jewel, the more it resembles the "Little Shop of Horrors," you know, that flesh-eating plant crying out: Feed me, Seymour! Conspicuous consumption of a nation which spends $ 1.8 Billion more each day than the whole earth combined and finds herself some $ 14 Trillion in debt (National Debt + Balance of Payment / Trade Debts) is a bit too much, would not you say? – after all, she represents but 5% of the world's population.

Come on, half the eagle is in a declared state of emergency and the overt identification by Big Brother of all things human is prepared and / or is itching to pounce upon American liberties once thought sacrosanct by both the ACLU and the NRA by euphemistic legislation called Patriotic Acts, and finally, a cashless society where all of us are implanted with chips awaiting true identity and debit through scanning devices at your local Safeway.

The clock is ticking. Peak oil, where American's "zero sum game" is played out – for you to gain I must loose – refuses to share her bounty with the Asian tigers of China and India; and, of course, they are more than pleased with our indulgence. Like Rome, our legions amongst the world's "provinces," are stretched thin – and the draft can not be all that far off if we're to maintain our economic edge and SUV-lifestyle (latest stats for the past two years show that 58% of all vehicles purchased in the USA are SUVs, pickups, or plain old gas guzzlers). And, as if these outrageous consequences were not enough to abandon ship – toss in the worst natural disaster ever to afflict the homeland: Katrina; man, wait till we finance that one!

So. . . is not it about time to flee to Canada or head for the Mexican Riviera? Eh? Canada's a safe haven for pot-people and same-sex marriage is the rage. Crime's relatively low compared to the lower 48 and the death penalty's been outlawed for nearly thirty years. Finally, most of the 125,000 Viet-Nam Era draft dodgers who fled to Canada stuck around and now constitute the leading edge of all the above progressive life-style. Wow, we're talkin 'about socialized medicine for all – a veritable paradise compared to the inflictions of them patriots down under. Cheap drugs (includes tons of cannabis), affordable housing, tiny military budget, etc., etc .– a little cold, but you'll get used to it.

Finally, if Hollywood's collective apoplexy over President Bush's election can be believed – we're outta here. . . a few of these righteous indignations (unfulfilled) are duly noted, if for nothing else, their entertainment value. Notwithstanding the Hollywood stars and directors who claimed exodus was their only option under Bush – Barbra Streisand, Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Robert Altman, Lynn Redgrave, Pierre Salinger (now deceased), and Cher – all found the allure of Babylon on the Hudson irresistible; so much for leftist vibratos. Misquoted or just plain fluff – they all abide within the walls of the crystal palace celebrating the party atmosphere, as they star in a movie sequel to the "Left Behind Series" entitled: Talk is Cheap, Follow Us.

Patriots would exclaim we're selling off and out America; globalists would see dollars galore; socialists would see an on-going rip off; and a whole bunch of people in the middle could care less (aka "victims anonymous").

Meanwhile Deanna Spingola in "Building a North American Community" (July 15, 2005) keeps telling it like it is:

"While our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers having been spilling their blood in the sands of Iraq under the guise of restoring the country to the Iraqi citizens, our president is in the process of giving our country to the elite One world Order insiders. While our president is requiring protected borders in Iraq, he is obliterating, not only our southern, but our northern borders. "

Actually, Deanna (and you've got to read her entire article) is referring to the Bush / Fox / Martin meeting (USA / Mexico / Canada) held at Baylor University in Waco, Texas on 23 March 2005, where they were busy about establishing the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" - to wit, the SPPNA's troika:

"We, the elected leaders of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, have met in Texas to announce the establishment of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.

"Over the past decade, our three nations have taken important steps to expand economic opportunity for our people and to create the most vibrant and dynamic trade relationship in the world (ie, NAFTA; my insert). Since September 11 2001, we have also taken significant new steps to address the threat of terrorism and to enhance the security of our people.

"But much still remains to be done. In a rapidly changing world, we must develop new avenues of cooperation that will make our open societies safer and more secure, our businesses more competitive, and our economies more resilient.

"Our Partnership will accomplish these objectives through a trilateral effort to increase the security, prosperity, and quality of life of our citizens. This work will be based on the principle that our security and prosperity are mutually dependent and complementary, and will reflect our shared belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic values and institutions. It will also help consolidate our efforts within a North American framework, to meet security and economic challenges, and promote the full potential of our people, by reducing regional disparities and increasing opportunities for all. "

Now do not go conspiratorial on me. . . hee-hee. . . do not need to. . . let the truth speak for itself:

It was on May 17, 2005 the CFR formalized its "Independent Task Force" to review at length the parameters of such a three-pact agreement among the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This 31-member force de jure was chaired by John F. Manley, Pedro Aspe, and William F. Weld and vice-chaired by: Robert A. Pastor, Thomas P. d'Aquino, Andrés Rozental. Cooperating with the CFR's efforts were the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales.

Indeed, the composite document released by the aforementioned is the very title of Spingola's article. . .

No wonder that Spingola and other American patriots view this as the "Great American Give-a-way!"

Take a gander at their timid prognostications and guess why moving to Canada's a joke. . .for what NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) could not destroy, FTAA (Free Trade Area / Agreement of the Americas… aka "Building a North American Community") fully intends:

"We are asking the leaders of the United States, Mexico, and Canada to be bold and adopt a vision of the future that is bigger than, and beyond, the immediate problems of the present… They could be the architects of a new community of North America, not mere custodians of the status quo. " (Canadian co-chair, John P. Manley, Former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance).

Now, listen to Spingola's assessment of all this – and, do not think she's some brainless Libertarian gone amok down in Texas somewhere. . .

"This basically means that Americans must give up their freedoms and hard won sovereignty along with all resources for the greater good of the 'New Community.' It is a socialistic equalization designed to make slaves of everyone in all three countries. This will occur as a result of the secret, subversive activities of our ruling elitist who have never sacrificed anything except their integrity. When it comes time to sell this socialistic venture , Bush will adopt his multipurpose 'Christian' stance and use every possible guilt maneuver to encourage this good hearted Christian country to open our hearts to the less fortunate. this is a ploy to make all of us less fortunate. There will be many who will fall for this scam under the pretext of Christianity. If we think Christians are media maligned now, just wait! We will be the most hated inmates in the camp! "

Wow! Powerful projections here, right? I'm sure we'll somehow meet up with Spingola one day – if not in glory, then in some gulag cell contemplating how all of this got out of hand. . . I mean, if Shirley McClain went out on a limb, Spingola's going out on a twig:

"All of this is done under the facade of protecting us – from terrorists? The worse terrorists we face are those who serve in our government. Another day that shall live in infamy, 9/11, has done much to serve the purposes of those whose main goal is to establish the One World Order. What an opportunistic event! it could not have worked any better if they had planned it! "

O CANADA – VIVA MEXICO – Life is good!

Of course most Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans can not stomach all of this unification at once; thus, the GREAT TRANSITION awaits us all:

Unified military command? Listen to what the CFR plans for your future:

1. Establish a common security perimeter by 2010.
2. Develop a North American Border Pass with biometric identifiers.
3. Develop a unified border action plan and expand border customs facilities.

The CFR web site is effusive in its sacrifice of sovereignty:

4. Create a single economic space:
5. Adopt a common external tariff.
6. Allow for the seamless movement of goods within North America.
7. Move to full labor mobility between Canada and the US
8. Develop a North American energy strategy that gives greater emphasis to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases – a regional alternative to Kyoto.

Hey, and let's shoot the gap – listen, we're talkin 'INTEGRATION BIG TIME. . . and we're not whistling Dixie (although we might permit that in the new North American Federation of United States as an expression of multiculturalism – harkening back to the good ole days when a different form of slavery abounded). . . so, we might have to:

9. Review those sectors of NAFTA that were excluded.
10. Develop and implement a North American regulatory plan that would include "open skies and open roads" and a unified approach for protecting consumers on food, health, and the environment.
11. Expand temporary worker programs and create a "North American preference" for immigration for citizens of North America.
12. Spread benefits more evenly:
13. Establish a North American Investment Fund to build infrastructure to connect Mexico's poorer regions in the south to the market to the north.
14. Restructure and reform Mexico's public finances.
15. Fully develop Mexican energy resources to make greater use of international technology and capital.
16. Institutionalize the partnership:
17. Establish a permanent tribunal for trade and investment disputes.
18. Convene an annual North American summit meeting.
19. Establish a Tri-national Competition Commission to develop a common approach to trade remedies.
20. Expand scholarships to study in the three countries and develop a network of Centers for North American Studies.

Now, that does not sound so bad – in point of fact, we can sort of ease ourselves into this new North American "framework." Especially enlightening are the PROGRESSIVE comments of people like William F. Weld (another co-chair) former Governor of Massachusetts and US Assistant Attorney General:

"We are three liberal democracies; we are adjacent; we are already intertwined economically; we have a great deal in common historically; culturally, we have a lot to learn from one another."

Three democracies? Now, let's not mince words like "Democracy" vs. "Republic" – we all know what we're talking about here, right? "… And to the Republic for which it stands." Of course, that's been turned into a prayer – so much for the Republic, and so much for allegiance! Oh well, we were not all cracked up to be much of a Republic anyway, right?

CFR's been around since 1921 and Mexico / Canada duplicated these efforts in 1976 (Mexican Council on Foreign Relations and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives). CFR members frequently address House and Senate meetings who attempt to probe academia at the highest levels – and, of course, the CFR is right up there with the best (if not THE best) of them (you know, big bucks and all) . Enter Dr. Robert A. Pastor, VP, International Affairs Professor / Director, Center for North American Studies American University, speaking on the "Travel Initiative" within the Western Hemisphere.

Dr. Pastor (fourth Musketeer amongst the three) did not have to travel far. . . he simply sat there before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Narcotics Affairs on June 9, 2005 and quoted the CFR's "Independent Task Force" (May 17, 2005) and their fine efforts to frame a new "Future of North America. "

In sum, Dr. Pastor accused the three nations of "small-mindedness" – and felt that in order to "secure the homeland" we should not zero in on US interest; instead, let's stop worrying about our borders with Mexico and Canada and let her rip! Let's start thinking global here in North America.

First, let's integrate the economies – we're well on our way on that one; next, let's get down socially, especially in light of 9/11 (terror, as in Nazi Germany, is a real catalyst for "positive change"); and, thirdly, let's forge ahead and go beyond these petty terrorists to a create a massive North American Community – no-holds-bared thinking is needed around this bastion of isolationism! All for one and one for all. . . each benefiting from the other's success, while avoiding our demise when we concentrate on our problems – that's the ticket (whoops, travel-talk; no pun intended).

Pastor's Center for North American Studies at American University is designed to think dynamically, think huge – let the tide rise and pick us all up! Feel the surge! As a CFR member, Pastor poured praise upon NAFTA – no big deal if a few jobs have gone south. In the totality of it all, we all benefit, for is not the dictum we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, or is it that some are more equal than others, or that some benefit more than others ? Oh, well, we can work out the details later, because the War on Terror trumps all.

Sure, we all might have to work for lower wages and benefits for starters; and we might, if we want to hold up the current social order, work longer hours – but just think: More of us will be working – Dads, Moms, daughters, brothers, etc. And, once in a great while, we'll be allowed to vacation – not bad, right?

During the latest round of Russian-American talks between Bush and Putin (this week, Sept. 11-17), the biggie was energy policy: How to secure Russian petroleum over the protestations of the Chinese and Indians? Energy – now that's why the USA-Canada-Mexico deal is absolutely mandatory.

The lion's share (58%) of our imported oil comes from Canada and Mexico anyway, right? So, is not it about time we awoke and smelled the roses? Economically, we're integrated and America's insatiable love with the automobile demands that we fully integrate the livin 'tar out of these economies. Canada is our biggest trading partner anyway – 86% of all Canadian exports go to America, whereas 89% of Mexico's go north – somehow we consume it all!

"Since the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement eight years ago, Mexico has surpassed Japan and has become the United States' second-largest trading partner – Canada is the biggest. Thanks to the open trading borders, companies in all three countries have been stretching their reach throughout North America. " (Forbes, 2002).

What a difference a little time makes! Yep, ole NAFTA keeps workin 'its wonders. Now, over 40% of US trade with Canada is intra-firm, that is, trade occurring between parts of the same firm operating on both sides of the border – and, that trade totals over $ 500 billion annually between the two. Insofar as Mexico is concerned, both nations are on line for $ 300 Billion for 2005! Thus, our little North American Free Trade Agreement is pressing in around $ 1 Trillion annually, import / export.

Pastor claims that 9/11 actually threatened to cripple "North American long-term integration." Help me understand the problem, Dr. Pastor. For one little ditty, we went from 3 million illegals in the 1990s to 11 million today – we're getting integrated in spite of your rhetoric!

So, the theory goes, Canada is rich in resources (and Mexico's Gulf Oil too), and Mexico is rich in cheap labor – so can not we all just get along? If we're getting integrated economically, in any event, maybe we can all enjoy cheaper oil at the pumps – say, by the way, that bridge in Brooklyn is going for half off this weekend only! In conclusion – can't we all just get along and drive off in our Hummers into Baja's sunset or up through the Yukon's wilderness?

"For nearly two years now, Ottawa has been quietly negotiating a far-reaching military cooperation agreement, which allows the US Military to cross the border and deploy troops anywhere in Canada, in our provinces, as well station American warships in Canadian territorial waters. this redesign of Canada's defense system is being discussed behind closed doors, not in Canada, but at the Peterson Air Force base in Colorado, at the headquarters of US Northern Command (NORTHCOM).

"The creation of NORTHCOM announced in April 2002, constitutes a blatant violation of both Canadian and Mexican territorial sovereignty. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced unilaterally that US Northern Command would have jurisdiction over the entire North American region. Canada and Mexico were presented with a fait accompli. US Northern Command's jurisdiction as outlined by the US DoD (Department of Defense) includes, in addition to the continental US, all of Canada, Mexico, as well as portions of the Caribbean, contiguous waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans up to 500 miles off the Mexican, US and Canadian coastlines as well as the Canadian Arctic.

"NorthCom's stated mandate is to 'provide a necessary focus for [continental] aerospace, land and sea defenses, and critical support for [the] nation's civil authorities in times of national need.'"

  • []
  • Surprise, surprise! You see, ever since FDR sprung his "attack on Canada is an attack on the USA," and the Canadians reciprocated in 1938, this little military integration thing has really gotten serious. Maybe you thought NORTHCOM was just for the Canadians – apparently, the only guys squawking about it are them draft dodgers worried about Sam's long reach. Do not think we're talking about a slight modification here for the Canadian Mounted Police and the Mexican Federales. . .

Donald Rumsfeld postured that North America's geographic command center (smack dab in the Middle of the USA) "is part of the greatest transformation of the Unified Command Plan since its inception in 1947."

Furthermore, as Army, Air, Naval, and Special Forces integrate, NATO and NORAD's old frameworks are and will get a complete facelift – ie, you is not seen nothin 'yet! To facilitate this shakeup (between the USA and Canada) a Binational Planning Group (BPG) now works in tandem with NORTHCOM (BPG is a mix of US and Canadian officers.). BPG has the following goals:

o to share maritime surveillance and intelligence
o to coordinate binational actions involving military and civil agencies
o to design and conduct joint training programs and exercises.

This means of naval and military integration came about in 2002 through the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) who initiated the BPG. The BPG's singular mission is to develop an "Enhanced Canada-US Security Cooperation with the US… Starting with a simple two-year mandate, the BPG works alongside NorthCom and NORAD in Colorado Springs."

It will not be long before the militaries of these alleged sovereign states are fully integrated. In sum, here's what Americans who've just moved to Canada have to look forward to:

"And ultimately what is at stake is that beneath the rhetoric, Canada will cease to function as a Nation…

    Types Of Stroke

Proper brain cell function requires a constant delivery of oxygen and glucose from the bloodstream. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food and causing the brain cell to die.

    Types of Stroke
There are two chief types of strokes: Ischemic stroke and Hemorrhagic stroke.

ISCHEMIC STROKE is the result of a blocked artery due to blood clot. This is the most common type of stroke and it is the cause of 90% of all strokes. This type of stroke can occur in 2 ways:

Thrombotic stroke – This occurs when the blood clot (thrombus) forms in an artery that supply blood to your brain due to a blood vessel that is already narrow. The clot deprives a part of the brain of oxygen and blood causing the cells of that part of the brain to die. The narrowed blood vessel is typically caused by atherosclerosis – a disease in which the arteries are clogged by fatty deposits called plaques.

Embolic stroke -This is also called cerebral embolism and it occurs when a blood clot or other debris breaks off from a blood vessel away from your brain and travels through your bloodstream to lodge in narrower brain arteries. This type of blood clot is called an embolus. Atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) is the most common cause of embolic stroke.

HEMORRHAGIC STROKE – The second chief type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel in a part of the brain becomes weak and leaks or ruptures, causing blood to leak into the brain (Hemorrhage). Hypertension (high blood pressure), and Aneurysms (weak spots in blood vessels) are the most common cause of brain hemorrhages. It may also be caused by the rupture of a defective blood vessel. There are two types of hemorrhagic stroke:

Intracerebral hemorrhage is a type of stroke in which a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain tissue and damage the cells. A cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) causes stroke symptoms by depriving blood and oxygen to parts of the brain in a variety of ways. This type of hemorrhagic stroke is mostly caused by high blood pressure because small arteries become brittle and are subject to cracking and rupturing due to the high pressure.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage – In this type of hemorrhage , blood accumulates in the space beneath the arachnoid membrane that lines the brain. This is usually caused by the rupture of an aneurysm. It is usually signalled by a sudden, intense headache.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – This is also called a mini stroke and is caused by a temporary decrease in blood supply to part of your brain due to a clot or debris. They often last less than five minutes and have similar symptoms like a stroke.

    A Beautiful Mind (Movie Review)

Nominated for eight Academy Awards, and winner of four Oscars including Best Picture, A Beautiful Mind is one of the premier dramas of the decade. The brainchild of popular director Ron Howard (Opie from The Andy Griffith Show), A Beautiful Mind debuted to widespread critical acclaim due to the depth of its screenplay, the brilliant performances of Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, and the in-depth portrayal of a victim of mental illness. Based on the true story of John Nash, a schizophrenic mathematical genius who overcame his illness and went on to win the prestigious Nobel Prize for his "Game Theory," A Beautiful Mind is one of the best films of the decade …

A young mathematical genius, John Nash (Russell Crowe) enjoys the early success of a budding career in academia. Able to complete mathematical formulas that baffle many of the greatest minds of his time, a young Nash stands on the brink of profound discovery with a limitless future and seemingly inevitable fame at his doorstep. Meeting a beautiful girl at an evening party, Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) would later become Nash's wife. The two seem destined for a life of bliss. But Nash's problems were not confined to the mathematical arena …

Suffering from schizophrenia, Nash develops an acute sense of paranoia, decoding encrypted non-existent Soviet spy messages from comic books and newspaper advertisements. The reality in which he lives does not exist, and it threatens to tear apart his marriage, his career, and the very life which he holds dear … Can Nash overcome his debilitating disease and pursue the course of excellence to which he once seemed destined? The cast and crew of A Beautiful Mind allow us to see a whole new world through the eyes of suffering genius …

Russell Crowe's follow up performance to smash hits LA Confidential and Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind is an unbelievable journey into one man's reality. Russell Crowe's brilliant portrayal of the schizophrenic Nash and Jennifer Connelly's standout performance as the woman who loved him form an onscreen synergy that continually drives the screenplay of A Beautiful Mind. Exhibiting quality direction from Ron Howard, the film stands as an eternal testament to the beauty of the human mind and the durability of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and shine at its brightest.

A fascinating film which successfully blurs the lines between John Nash's imagination and the world of reality, A Beautiful Mind vividly illustrates one man's struggle against great odds. As Nash's paranoia and hallucinations collude to blot out the genius of a beautiful mind, the power of the human spirit rallies to great heights – achieving a Nobel Prize and even the immortalization of one's own life in film! Nash should be lauded for his triumph against a paralyzing disease, and Ron Howard should be praised for delivering a cinematic masterpiece that shows us the true beauty of one man's plight. For these reasons and more, A Beautiful Mind is definite must-see film – perhaps one of the fifty best films of all time …

10 Tips to Stay Mentally Healthy

If it's not broke do not fix it … right? No! One of the best methods of mental health recovery is to maintain an environment prone to mental health and mental illness recovery. Staying mentally healthy is a way of life, not something you do when things start to go wrong. Keep reading for your top 10 tips to staying mentally healthy! Remember sometimes, the best treatment is prevention.

For access to some great cutting-edge research aside from the tips below, check out the Mental Health Center of Denver's Research and Evaluation Team's publications.

    1) Stay Active Physically: the human mind developed in an environment requiring one travels the equivalent of 12 miles per day for sheer survival (and no that does not mean jumping in the car and flooring it!). Recent research has proven that increased physical activity can actually create new brain cells (once thought of as a static number), this explains why nearly every mental healthcare consumer at facilities such as MHCD are strongly encouraged to begin an exercise regiment immediately.

    2) Stay Active Socially: we are social creatures, thus one's support network, be it family or friends, is of immense importance to one's general well being. It is of course OK to take a few nights to yourself, but do not stay shut in. Go out, keep your social relations strong.

    3) Get a Hobby: find something creative outlet that you want to do just for yourself. Depending on what you chose, a hobby can be a great avenue into sports clubs, night classes at a local college, or staying physically active; plus if its something you enjoy it will be much easier to stick with!

    4) Be Self-Reflective: you know those few nights a week I said it was OK to just take a night to yourself? Do it! Read a good book, walk your dog, just think things over. Examine where you are in life, where you want to be, and where you've come from. Be honest and complimentary to yourself. You are a brave, amazing person, so act like it 🙂

    5) Play: play is actually tremendously important for staying mentally healthy. Devoting time to just having fun can recharge your battery, revitalize your social networks, and reduce stress / anxiety.

    6) Maintain a healthy diet: this goes along with staying active. Stay healthy, both in terms of exercise and in terms of eating. Now do not go crazy here, you do not want to make yourself miserable by being the food-police, just be conscious of what is going into your body. And allow yourself some leg-room to cheat once a week or so!

    7) Set goals: when people are feeling depressed, aimless, or like they are just going through the motions, often times its because they are lacking general direction. Set realistic goals for yourself so you are continuously aiming at something, this is a practice known as positive dissonance (you are constantly reaching for a new goal you set, thus you are always striving further and further even if you accomplish a goal along the way ). Importantly though, one must not take this too far and find no joy in overcoming a given sub-goal; this will prove to demoralize the individual. You should celebrate your successes! Each and every one of them, and then push yourself to be even better. Once you reach your goal, set another one to get even further! This will constantly drive you, give you reasons to celebrate as you attain goals, and will increase your general level of content and mental health.

    8) Balance free time: this is very important! Do not let yourself just lay in front of the TV. That is actually conducive to depressive environments. Relax, watch some TV, read a book, go for a walk, spend time on your hobby. Do it all, not just one of them.

    9) Examine your locus of control: in the midst of your self reflections, it is important to examine just where your locus of control is. Are you blaming everyone else for things? Or are you taking on all the fault? Nothing is one sided, remember that. Especially if your depression is focused around relationship woes. Think of what you really did, what others really did, accept that its in the past and that the best thing to do now is learn from it and live on to never make that mistake again!

    10) Do not be afraid to seek help: It is a great shame that seeking out mental health professionals in America has become a taboo or secretive endeavor! If you are worried about your mental health, you should be proud of yourself for putting forth an effort to improve yourself. You are On in the if the general area Hotels , the I would recommend a recovery-based versions treatment center color : such color : as the Mental Health Center of Denver, or MHCD . The only shame in finding help is not getting help when you can benefit from it!

Have a Headache? Pop a Pill!

Once upon a time, when you got a headache, you looked around for the cause. Some causes were very obvious. On Sunday mornings, my husband, known to imbibe a few gin and tonics Saturday nights, would wake up clutching his head and moaning "I knew there was something wrong with that tonic water" ….. Right! So that's one very obvious cause.

It's when the cause of your headache is not obvious, or you do not have the time or inclination to figure out where it came from that the problem arises.

You know the drill. Have a headache? Pop a pill or four or so! Preferably a brand name pill, heavily advertised on TV. Pills where the cost of manufacture is zero and where marketing costs are in the millions.

Big drug can afford lavish TV advertising for its products. To sell one pain pill it will spend more than the GDP of many small countries. And the TV ads work. You see a beautiful woman clutching her head, in obvious pain. The weight of the world is on her shoulders. What can she do? Take a pill of course! The bottle is right there in the foreground, brand name carefully highlighted. She takes the pill and voila! Headache gone! She's practically dancing. Wow! Those pills really work! Right!

In the real world, what happens? We get a headache. We take the pills so heavily advertised on TV. The pain of the headache is temporarily alleviated. The headache is actually just sitting in a corner doing its knitting. The temporary effect of the pills wears off. We take more. Then we need stronger pills and heavier doses. Soon, we need a prescription for pain medication. Luckily for us, we know exactly what to ask our doctor for. It's another heavily advertised prescription medication.

Is this the answer? Of course not! The answer is a lot simpler, cheaper and healthier than that.

You feel a headache coming on. It will not hit you like a sledgehammer. You feel it coming; a general unease. Where are you? Crouched over your computer, maybe? Neck tense? Shoulders knotted? Tension everywhere? Well, yes. Right there, is the major cause of headache in the modern world.

Just once, do not reach into your desk drawer and extract your pain pills and swallow them unthinking. Realize that your body is in knots and it's trying to tell you so. Listen to it. Get up. Stretch. If you're in a commercial office, walk to the outside door. Take a few breaths. Walk to the water cooler. Drink two cups of water. Stretch five times before returning to your desk. See how that works? Rocket science! The world did not end because you took a five minute break. But the synapses firing off your headache subsided. Your eyes cleared. Your shoulders dropped from around your ears. A neck rub is great too, but a bit difficult to get at the office.

If you work from home, oh lucky you! Take all the above steps but, if you have a garden, go outside. Admire your glorious plants. Have a few words with them. Do a little weeding. Return to your desk refreshed.

So, what just happened? We ignored the siren call of lethal chemicals and we soothed our tortured limbs and muscles all by ourselves. This actually works for tension and stress headaches. And it's so much healthier than ingesting chemicals passed as safe by the Keystone Cops in the FDA.

There are other headaches, of course, not succeptible to these particular natural remedies and I'll cover them in later articles. But, for now, there is one instance I want to highlight:

If you get a blinding headache, out of the blue, no warning at all, your first instinct is to lie down and hope it passes. Do not. Call your PCP or the emergency services. You need to be examined right away. Remember. If you get a blinding headache without warning, act immediately. Get help. Now.

The sheer pace of our lives today causes all sorts of unease in our bodies. Big Drug has a panacea for all the ills the befall us. But it's not a panacea; it's not even a Band Aid. It's a false fix and we need to get away from it. Thanks to TV advertising, we're conditioned to think we should take a pill every time we feel less than on top of the world. Not so. Let's start with small natural steps and see if we can bring our bodies back to the glorious ease we had as children.

Anti-Inflammatory Cream for Various Skin and Auto-Immune Skin Diseases

Clobetasol propionate cream is used for the treatment of various skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and lichen sclerosus. It is also used to treat several auto-immune diseases including alopecia areata, vitiligo, lichen planus and mycosis fungoides. For better understanding the characteristics of these skin diseases that are treatable with Clobetasol propionate will be discuss.

Let us begin with the first skin condition Eczema which is a form of dermatitis or inflammation of the outer layer of the skin. These include dryness and recurring skin rashes that are characterized by one or more symptoms like redness, swelling, itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering cracking, oozing or bleeding.

Psoriasis is an auto immune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious but it has been linked to an increased risk of stroke.

Lichen Sclerosus (LS) also known as “Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus” is a disease of unknown cause that results in white patches on the skin, which may cause scarring on and around genital skin.

Alopecia Areata is a condition wherein it involves the hair loss in one or more round spots on the scalp. Typical first symptoms of alopecia areata are small bald patches. The underlying skin is unscarred and looks superficially normal. These patches can take many shapes, but are most usually round or oval. Alopecia areata most often affects the scalp and beard, but may occur on any hair-bearing part of the body. With this skin condition it is common that skin areas can exhibit hair loss and re-growth at the same time. The disease may also go into remission for a time, or permanently.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes depigmentation of sections of skin. It usually occurs when melanocytes, the cells which are responsible for skin pigmentation, die or are unable to function properly. The cause of vitiligo is still unknown, but research suggests that it may be due to auto immune, genetic, oxidative stress, neural and viral causes.

Lichen Planus is a chronic mucocutaneous disease that may affect the skin, tongue, and oral mucosa. This disease presents itself in the form of papules, lesions, or rashes but Lichen planus does not necessarily involve lichens, the fungus or algae symbionts that often grow on tree trunks. The commonly refers to the dry and undulating, “lichen-like” appearance of affected skin and it is also associated with certain medications and diseases but the underlying pathology is currently unknown up to now.

Mycosis fungoides also known as Alibert-Bazin syndrome or granuloma fungoides, is the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It generally affects the skin, but may progress internally over time. The disease, however, is not a fungal infection but rather a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was so named because Alibert described the skin tumors of a severe case as having a mushroom-like appearance.

The use of this cream has also possible side effects and this includes the following: osteoporosis, acneiform eruptions, allergic contact dermatitis, burning sensation, cracking and fissuring, cushing’s syndrome, dizziness, dryness, erythema, glaucoma, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation, itching, Irritation, miliaria, numbness of fingers, perioral dermatitis, pruritus, secondary infection, skin atrophy, skin maceration, stinging, striae, telangiectasia.

Clobetasol Cream is primarily used for itching, redness and swelling which is associated with countless skin conditions. It works effectively by decreasing specific immune responses which then lowers the redness and itching of the skin.

    5 Kinds of Hair Loss

Hair loss happens everyday. It is perfectly normal for a person to lose one hundred strands of hair daily. While losing hair is one part of the cycle of hair growth, excessive and permanent hair loss becomes an embarrassment.

There are basically five kinds of hair loss:

    1. Androgenetic alopecia. It is also called as the pattern baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia is usually heredity. A family history of Androgenetic alopecia can increase the risks of hair loss. Age is another contributing factor to this particular condition.
    2. Cicatricial alopecia. It is also called the scarring alopecia. Cicatricial alopecia resulted from inflammation and is a permanent condition. Inflammation damages the follicle of the hair and causes scarring. New hair can not grow due to the scars.
    3. Alopecia areata. It is a result of an autoimmune disease. Nobody knows why alopecia areata occurs. Those who suffer from alopecia areata are healthy.
    4. Telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is a temporary condition. It is a result of physical, physiological, and emotional shock. Distressing event such as the death of a loved one can trigger this condition.
    5. Traction alopecia. It happens due to the pressure on the scalp due to too much hairstyling. Since traction alopecia is a result of constant hair pulling, it is the most preventable kind of hair loss.

Knowing the different kinds of hair loss is important. At the very least, you know how to prevent it. Even though this particular condition is not as damaging to health as cancer or stroke, it is damaging to your ego. You definitely prefer to have a full head of healthy and shiny hair.

The Relationship between Ear Infection and Sinusitis

A cold, allergies, coughing, and sneezing can all influence in sinusitis. However, the fact that these can be an influence in ear infection is not commonly known. The reason that sinusitis and ear infection are related is that the sinuses and the ear are connected by a tube in the inner ear called the Eustachian tube.

Before explaining further how sinusitis and ear infection are connected, I will explain them one at a time, beginning with sinusitis, then moving on to ear infection. When one is suffering from the cold, flu, or allergies, there tends to be stuffiness in the sinuses. The stuffiness is caused by the sinuses. They produce mucous in an effort to clean the sinus tissue from the dirt and bacteria breathed in. Whenever the sinuses sense impurities or bacteria, they produce more mucous. Sometimes this is counterproductive, because the bacteria may settle in the sinus tissue and cause inflammation or sinusitis. The mucous then gets blocked in by the inflammation, and instead of cleaning out the bacteria, it invites bacteria to grow.

After swimming, bathing, playing in the snow, or other water activities, water collects in the ears, and if it is not properly cleaned out, it drains into the Eustachian tube. Because the Eustachian tube is only slightly slanted, even less in children, the liquid often settles in the Eustachian tube, inviting ear infection. Similar to sinusitis, ear infection can inflame and swell, blocking further drainage. Ear infection can cause dizziness, headaches, ear aches, and other ailments.

Consider what happens when one having sinusitis blows his or her nose, coughs, or sneezes. Where does the air go? True, much of the air goes through the mouth and nose, but much of the air pressure goes out toward the ears. That means that infection is also pushed out toward the ears, making sinusitis an indirect cause of ear infection.

It also works the other way around. Infection in the ears can also drain down into the sinuses, inflaming the sinus tissue and causing sinusitis.

Both sinusitis and ear infection are surprisingly simple to prevent. Proper and frequent cleaning of the ears with Q-tips will prevent liquid from draining into the inner ear, inviting infection to settle in the Eustachian tube or other tissue. Preventing sinusitis is just as simple. Just as we wash our hands throughout the day to prevent bacteria and disease, we should wash out our nasal passages with nasal spray on a regular basis. This cleans out germs that enter the body through the mouth and nose. In using nasal spray, one should keep in mind that studies have shown xylitol to be a natural bacteria repellant that one should look for as the leading ingredient in nasal spray. Because it is sugar free, it also reduces the ability of bacteria to leave behind damaging acids.

Hearing Devices – Opt For an Advanced One!

Amplification of sound is required by those with hearing impairment. If you have some one special at home who has hearing problems consider an hearing aid with advanced features. Do away with the conventional noisy devices, which react to some one who speaks loudly to you. These devices will start creating weird noise when some one speaks a little louder to you. It is quite annoying isn’t it? Opt for an advanced device!

Aging, accident, hereditary factors may contribute to your hearing problems. You can minimise the feedback sound by opting for a specialised device. The most advanced one will help you reduce this feedback noise such as television, radio, mike etc. Earlier with the conventional ones, you had to adjust the noise according to the sound in the environment. Now, it is carried out automatically by the device itself based on the noise surrounding the person wearing it.

At times, low level noise may also be irritating if a hearing device is used. An advanced device will let you reduce the noise through digital noise reduction. Another additional feature is to modulate speech. This device will help the user understand what is spoken by another person. It modulates the sound in a more comprehensive manner for the user.

Available are the fully digital programmable hearing aids which are suitable for the modern age. With Speech modulator, noise reduction features it is the most advanced one. Open ear device has a reduced occlusion effect and are attached to your ears from outside thus the sound signals that you receive are more natural.

    Living With Disabilities

Living with disabilities can be a lot easier if you are willing to take advantage of assistance programs offered to people with your specific disability. There are many people who refuse to join disability programs because they feel like they are giving up if they use them. The programs were not created to give anyone an easy escape from responsibility. Instead, most disability programs are there to help people progress faster and more efficiently. Let me tell you about about a disability program that I used in high school. My hands have trouble writing legibly. Because of this I would get low grades in school from teachers who could not read my writing. I was shy and did not want to approach the disability department at my school to get help for this. So, I accepted low grades for a while.

That was until my mother started to get mad at me for getting low grades. I explained to her what was happening. It was the same thing that had happened at every school I had ever been to. She contacted the disability department, and from then on I could use a computer to do my assignments. My grades started to improve greatly. I enjoyed doing assignments more because I knew that my teachers would be able to read what I wrote. When I look back on that experience, I realize that I was silly to think that being part of a disability program would make me any less of a person. The disability program helped me become better. It provided a means whereby my teachers could read my work and help me get better at it. There are many disabilities out there, but they all have on thing in common. There is help for each of them. No matter what your disability is, or where you are, there are ways to be able to have that disability effect you as little as possible.

Sometimes you will have to do more than just join a disability program. If there is not a program like that where you are, then you might have to form one. You will be a hero to future people with your disability. For instance, there was a library that I used to visit that only had stairs. People with wheelchairs simply could not visit that library. They had to go across town to another library. One brave person decided to fight against this. She petitioned to have a ramp installed at the library. After the newspaper picked up their story, the library said that they were building a ramp. Now there are many people with wheelchairs that frequent that library. Living with disabilities is a way of life for many of us. Sometimes we forget that there is help out there. We should not be so prideful not to accept assistance when it can make us better at doing the things we want to do. Everyone needs help sometimes. It is nothing that we need to be ashamed of.

    Wireless Internet Provider and LISP

When we are talking about the Internet and internet service providers (ISP's) and we use the acronym LISP, we are talking about a speech impediment. This acronym actually stands for Local Internet Service Provider. A very different definition to anything that has to do with speaking differently or speech impediments. Because there are so many ISP's in every country, it is true to say that there are many LISP's and also many very large telecommunications companies that started off that way but have become state or country wide LISP's. This article will talk about what exactly these things are.

If I say that your ISP is a LISP, then I am saying that they are only servicing an area that is local to you. This could be an area that includes your suburb and several other suburbs around your area. It could also mean that they only service your capital city or metropolitan area but nowhere else. Sometime it can be bigger and the ISP will service the whole state. Whichever one it is, in all situations they would be a local Internet service provider. If you know that someone on the other side of the country uses the same ISP as you, then you are definitely not with LISP.

A local provider can also be a wireless internet provider. It means that they can service a local area, any of which have been described above, but they do it with wireless technology. Wireless technology has geographical limits but at the same time they can be expanded.

There are both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to a LISP. They are small enough that they can give you better service than a company with millions of customers. Also, when a fault has been detected in their network it can be fixed quickly. On the other hand they may be using the physical network of a large telecommunications company and just renting from them. This means they can not go out and fix the problem themselves but need to log a case with the owners of the equipment.

There are many reasons why you should or should not use a LISP. This will be a personal decision for you. This is also true of choosing to have wired or wireless Internet and whether you think the technology is stable enough or not for you. Only you can decide if you want a local company as your service provider, and if it will be wireless or not.

How to Create Your Own Online Memorials

Online memorials offer you a space to pen down your poignant memories and thoughts. In a way, it helps bring together grieving people scattered all over the world. In the age of the Internet, online memorials have become an essential part of the grieving process. One of the most popular online memorials available today brings together parents who have lost their children through disease or accidents. Another one helps unite the grieving admirers of some of the most wonderful personalities of our times. One such example is the famous online memorial site dedicated to Steve Irwin.

Why create an online memorial service?

The purpose of an online memorial service is to reach out to people who may be suffering from the same kind of grief. For instance, an online memorial site dedicated to young teenagers killed in accidents is a space where parents, relatives and friends of such unfortunate victims can come together to share their pain and remembrances.

Online memorial sites also fulfill another silent yet strong social duty: they are strong reminders of the gruesome 'accidents' out there, directed at all the people who are willing to listen. Messages that fill these pages are mute testimonies of the results of blind complacency. They act as a warning to all those blind folks who mistakenly believe that 'things like this do not happen to people like us'.

Online memorials sites dedicated to the brave, popular and famous personalities of the world allow admirers to express their appreciation and admiration. They also offer an avenue for people in one corner of the world to reach out to the bereaved and grieving family and friends located somewhere else. These messages, often containing words of praise and peace, help people in mourning face their loss.

Lastly, an online memorial is like a dedication that lives on forever. You are allowed to write down your thoughts and upload appropriate pictures to the site. Such pages are a source of continuous solace to the people who have been affected by grief.

How to create an online memorial site?

Dealing with loss is a difficult process – not only for you, but for all those who have been touched by the loss. An online memorial site creates an enduring tribute that will help you and your circle of friends and relatives deal with the loss. Websites like,, etc allow you to join their service when you pay a nominal entrance fee. Websites such as these are recommended for those who do not have the time or the wherewithal to create and maintain a web site of their own. These membership websites hold your page for as long as the membership fee is paid.

If you want to create your own memorial website, you have to be a little more active. Having a website of your own allows you a lot of flexibility. For one thing, you have more web space, so you can share more with others. You can include as many images as your web space allows you to. Another helpful feature is the ability to introduce a guestbook wherein friends, relatives or admirers can express their own thoughts. Web hosts charge you as low as 10 $ per year for a domain. A basic hosting plan can cost you less than 5 $ per year. If you have some knowledge in web designing and possess the necessary tools to upload your own pages, you can have your own website up and running for less than 20 $. Of course, you will also need to set aside some time for maintenance, updates and other periodical work.

An online memorial is an enduring form of personal tribute. It gives some tangible evidence of a life well-lived and offers some focus for the bereaved to reflect and remember well after the funeral is over. Online memorials are a contemporary and dignified method to share memories in a virtual garden that is untouched by the boundaries of time and place.

    5 Reasons For Memory Loss

Memory loss has a significant amount of causes that include certain diseases and conditions of the brain. However, these are not the only factors that contribute to the onset of memory loss. Other factors include environmental and lifestyle choices. Even the process of aging places a role in the condition of your memory ..

    1. According to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus, a vitamin deficiency has the potential to trigger memory loss. More specifically, MedlinePlus states that a lack of vitamin B12 has this effect. Even a vitamin D deficiency results in issues occurring in the brain. Studies indicate a link between a lack of vitamin D to general memory loss and conditions, such as dementia. This is also true for individuals with a vitamin B12 deficiency
    2. Conditions that cause dementedness such as Alzheimer's, Lewy Body Disease and Pick's Disease, more commonly known as frontotemporal dementia, are common causes of memory loss. Out of all memory impairments that dementia causes, Alzheimer's is the most common of this variety of this condition. The Mayo Clinic explains that an individual diagnosed with dementia will have at least two areas of the brain affected. For example, a demented individual will have memory problems and another symptom, such as a depletion in speech.
    3. Alcohol and drug usage can trigger both transient and permanent memory issues. Prolonged alcohol usage is responsible for causing permanent memory impairment notes MedlinePlus. Barbiturates or benzodiazepines, such as lorazepam, clonazepam, diazepam and phenobarbital all have the possibility of being a source of memory impairments – both short-term and long-term. This is one of the side effects of those two varieties of medications. In addition, both drug abuse and alcohol abuse have the potential to be grounds for dementia.
    4. Infections of the brain are origins for mental problems associated with memory. This is especially true with conditions, such as syphilis, herpes, AIDS, rubella, West Nile and echovirus. When these conditions travel to the brain, the infection takes its toll on a person's mind. Ultimately, infections of the brain to produce swelling, also referred to as encephalitis. In return, functions of the brain are affected, especially one's memory. A person who has encephalitis may experience symptoms including a fever, sensitivity to light, difficulty controlling emotions, vomiting and even clumsiness.
    5. Mental disorders are another cause of memory impairments. For example, dissociative disorder can cause both long-term and short-term memory impairments, especially those associated with a traumatizing event as the root of the condition. Other mental disorders that cause memory loss include depression and schizophrenia, which can be short-term. This means that when the condition is treated properly, correction of the memory problems occur, as well.

Speech Therapy Ideas to Overcome Stuttering Quickly and Easily

In order to stop stuttering in the quickest amount of time possible, you need to have a set plan of therapy. Luckily, there are many speech therapy ideas that are quick and easy to follow.

Stuttering or stammering is a speech disorder wherein the person repeats certain letters or syllables, which disrupts the smooth flow of words. It is difficult at times to understand what the person means because of this condition. Sometimes, a person suffering from this disorder tends to have inferiority in expressing himself to others because he is afraid to get laughed at. This is the reason why many speech therapy ideas had been developed over the years to help people overcome stuttering.

Some of these ideas for speech therapy include:

    1. Reading aloud
    2. Games
    3. Conversational Therapy
    4. Facial Exercises

The first exercise is reading aloud. Although this may sound very simple to you, to people who are constantly stuttering, this is quite a challenge. It would be better to have two materials ready. One is an audio that the person can listen to and learn the right pronunciation, diction, and phrasing of the words in the selection. Give the person a written copy of the same material and let him read this after listening to the audio. Constant practice of this skill will help the person to pronounce the words clearly and practice speaking the words straight.

You can also try playing games to make learning a bit more fun and less awkward especially to adult participants who may find it embarrassing to be undergoing these sessions at their age. Participants can first learn tongue twisters, which are generally sentences with difficult words to pronounce. This may also include alliterations with every first letter of the word in each sentence being the same. Each participant can then take turns to recite these tongue twisters and for those that get these right, will get a prize.

On the other hand, if these two speech therapy ideas are not yet enough, then you can try conversational therapy. As the name implies, this is a simple technique to engage the participant in a natural conversation. The first thing you need to remember when doing this speech therapy is that you have to make the participant feel at home and at ease with his surrounding. Becoming more relaxed will make it easier for the participant to open up and express himself. At first, there might be difficulty in pronouncing the words and saying the sentences straight. However, as time goes by and as you get more practice, there will be improved changes in the speech. You can talk about anything under the sun for as long as you are able to get the person to talk and express himself.

Facial exercise is also one good therapy to improve speech. Most of the time, the muscles in the face have become stiff that they need to be loosened up through the usual facial exercises. You can also massage the face to loosen up the facial muscles around the cheeks and mouth area.

These are just some speech therapy ideas that you can do to help people who are stuttering. It would certainly help them a lot if you practice these more often to see improved changes.
