Transgender Females

Transgender people can either be female or male. After the transgender process and change of identity and expression, these individuals require to be heard by the society. They have the same rights as all citizens. Everyone has a right to be heard when they file a report. No matter whether one is of a particular race or gender, what matters is that we are all citizens of one community. All the rules set are meant for everyone to follow. After becoming a transgender female, there is a lot of discrimination that comes with the transformation from the society, but these people have rights that need to be respected.

The right to be heard- After complaining about an insult or harassment, the law is supposed to take action against the offender. After all, being a transgender woman you require privacy and respect. Therefore, the law should take all measures necessary to reduce such situations, as being a transgendered person does not change the fact that one is human. Being transgender simply means that one made a choice to live independently with an identity and sex they feel much more comfortable with.

The right to all women’s rights- All women, that includes young, old, short, tall and fat, have the rights to use a public toilet whenever they feel the need to relieve themselves. Therefore, why should it be a problem when a transgender girl or woman requires the same? The use of a toilet is a right to every single person identified as a woman on their identity card, and therefore they should have the right to make use of the facility without any queries or insults from the public. They have the rights to give birth and raise children like any other women. They can dress casually and appropriately as women of any society.

The right to social activities, education facilities- It becomes very difficult for those teenagers who undergo this transformation, as they will find it is difficult to even just go to school. There is often a lot of teasing and discrimination from students, parents, and other authority figures. Transgender women should also have the ability to choose any occupation without any questions being asked. Most of all, it should not be a problem for them to go to public events like parties, dinners, clubs, and so forth.

The right to have relationships- Just because one is transgender does not necessarily mean that they have committed a crime. Therefore they should have the right to date and to be loved. Friends and family should not abandon them because of their choice of gender. They can also have a romantic relationship with someone who can learn to love them. Harassment and insulting should be avoided at all times, so as to allow these individuals to experience life just like any other human being.

Useful Insight to Dermal Fillers

It is hard to find somebody who does not want to look attractive. Beauty is appreciated by all. Aging is a natural process, however many times; this process may be quickened by factors like lack of balanced diet, smoking, lack of skin care, excessive exposure to harsh weather or use of excessive chemicals. Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of aging. Many people wonder what they can do to prevent these early signs of aging. Science and cosmetology have several ways that can help people in combating early signs of aging. Anti-aging creams, face lifts, dermal fillers etc are some of the most popular methods of combating wrinkles and fine lines.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers refer to products that are injected into your skin to reduce scars, fill up wrinkles or remove fine lines. These fillers when injected plump up skin fill wrinkles and fine lines and correct scars and rejuvenate the face. These fillers are an instant hit because the results are almost immediate. Many women opt for these fillers because they produce long term results and they are not as expensive as a plastic surgery. Effects of these fillers generally last for about one year or so and they are extremely affordable too.

Types of Dermal Fillers:

Dermal fillers tend to vary depending on the ingredients used. The three most popular types of fillers include Hyaluronic acid, collagen and fat. Each of these fillers last for about a year after which, you need to go for a treatment again.

Human Fat:

Human fat used to inject dermal fillers is taken from your own body. The physician takes fat from your abdomen or thighs, cleans it and then injects it in the affected areas in the face. This is a highly suitable option for those with several allergies. The body reabsorbs some of the fat injected. The treated area may look swollen for few days, until it absorbs excess fat.

This is a protein found in human skin and cows. It is usually used for plumping the lips. It is also used to counteract appearances of mild or moderate creases in the face. This dermal filling option is suitable for those who want to maintain their appearance after facial plastic surgery or a facelift

Hyaluronic Acid:

This is a normal and naturally producing acid found near the eyes and the human connective tissue. It acts as a cushion when injected and flattens the tissues, while drawing water in the skin surface. It is used for replacing soft tissue loss or fat loss in your cheeks. It is also used to fill fine lines, laugh lines, wrinkles and folds.

If you are looking for a quick solution to reduce wrinkles, folds or creases in your skin then dermal fillings are ideal for you. It is important that you discuss your detailed requirement with your physician so that he helps you in choosing the right filler for you. Ensure that you consult your physician in advance and equip yourself with all the do’s and don’ts of opting for these dermal filling injections.

Getting Started With Pediatric Physical Therapy

Adults are not the only people that benefit from physical therapy. Children of all ages come in to get the personalized attention that comes from meeting with a therapist and learning new skills or practicing skills that need a little help. For some, these appointments are just to change minor issue before they become a real problem. Others come because they need help to have independent movement and skills as they grow.

How do you know whether your child needs physical therapy? Parents do not always know what is considered to be normal for children of a certain age. It makes it more difficult that some children develop sooner in some areas and later in others. However, there are some set standards that a pediatrician is aware of that help a doctor determine if there is a problem that needs to be addressed. If you, as the parent have any concerns, be sure to bring them up at the next doctor's appointment. Even if it is nothing it can not hurt to ask and get some peace of mind that everything is normal.

The Earlier, The Better

In most cases, the early a child begins physical therapy, the better. While this is not the only treatment option available for kids needing some extra assistance, it can begin to help. Some things can be corrected and improved upon right away while others may take months or even years to see real improvement. The goal is early detection of any type of issue so that the child can receive the necessary help as soon as possible.

Options for Patients

There are a variety of different ways that physical therapy treatment can be handled. Some parents go to the first few appointments with the child and talk to the therapist about what can be done at home. There are often exercises that can be practiced to make improvements. At certain increments, the parent and child will come back in for the therapist to talk to and check on how the progress is going.

Others will need to come in at set intervals. Some will come in a few times a week; some will come in a few times a month. The number of appointments often correlates to the issues being addressed. After an initial consultation, the therapist will meet with the family and explain how the evaluation went and which course of action makes the most sense for the child. Most of the time the medical professionals and parents work together to ensure that the child is making progress.

It is important to check with the health insurance company to see what if any pediatric physical therapy is covered. There are times when the coverage is denied and a medical practitioner needs to add more information to the claim to explain the situation and how these appointments will make a difference in the child's life.

How to Plan a Healthy Diet

When planning a healthy diet, think about small steps that can help you change your diet. Then commit yourself towards these steps and gradually you will find yourself taking a healthy diet even without noticing.

Choose Your Diet

When choosing a diet, identify a variety of foods that make up a balanced diet. The food recipes you choose should be foods that you love. These will ensure you are not bored and that you don’t give up on your healthy diet plan. The major factor that discourage people and make them quit is taking foods they don’t like.

Start simple and slowly make your diet healthier day by day. Make sure to use fresh ingredients in all your food preparations. Fresh food stuff has more nutrients than preserved or processed foods.

Change Your Eating Habits Gradually

Change of eating habits must be a step by step process. People who try changing their diet overnight end up giving up. A diet change requires that you make small manageable changes bit by bit. Start by adding small portions of the ‘new foods’ to your usual diet. For example you can switch from cooking with solid fat to cooking with liquid oil- like olive oil.

These small changes on your diet will at the end become a habit. When you make a habit of adding more and more healthy foods to your daily diet, you will soon be taking a healthy diet.

Every Diet Change Matters

The goal of planning a healthy diet is to look good, have added energy and minimize your risk of getting diseases.

This does not mean you must be perfect. It also doesn’t mean you get rid of the normal foods you love. What counts is every portion of food that you add into your common foods. Whenever you add some healthy food into your diet, be sure that you are making progress.

Developing Healthy Eating Habits

You can learn healthy eating habits just like you learn to do other things in life.

Do not think of food as something you just pick on the store or on your way home. A healthy eating habit begins with choosing valuable foods that adds up to a balanced diet.

Then nurture your eating habits gradually;

Enjoy chewing your foods: Do not be in a hurry to swallow your food. Take time and feel the flavor of your food and its texture as well. Chew every bit of food that gets to your mouth. These will cause you to enjoy eating your food and also help you avoid mindless overeating.

Eat together with other people: This has both emotional and social benefit to your health. You will find it enjoyable when you eat while others are eating. This also encourages you to eat enough, especially when eating foods that you are not used to.

If you eat while watching TV or working on your computer, you will end up overeating.

Developing Your Own Weight Loss Plan

If you are interested in losing weight, improving your health, increasing your fitness levels or all of these then you may be interested in trying to find a weight loss plan. You can do this by either paying for an existing, professional course or developing your own one.

Those who are attempting to lose weight seriously for the first time may choose to either develop their own weight loss plan or pay for an existing professional service. If you are choosing one of these methods then it is important to weigh up the pros and cons to establish which route would be best for you.

If you decide to pay for a weight loss plan or weight loss program then you can do this either locally or online. Weight loss support groups such as Weight Watchers usually meet in a centralised location, normally getting together no more than once or twice per week. These programs rarely involve exercising together, however there are some exceptions. If you sign up to an online weight loss program, these often have a community feel to them, usually forums where you can talk to other members as well as professional weight loss gurus. These online communities usually also have a large number of healthy recipes as well as easy exercises that you can use.

One of the main advantages of paying for a professional program is that the individual or a trainer in charge of the program usually has a great deal of expedience and often relevant qualifications. These kind of methods are often a case of trial and error and professional companies have already spent a great deal of time on this and discovered what worked and what does not.

However, there are also advantages to developing your own weight loss program. For example, you can customise your program to suit your own requirements and tailor your workout plans to suit the exercises that you most enjoy. You may also build any allergies or dietary requirements into your personal plan.

If you choose to develop your own personal plan there are a number of tools which can help you to do this. There are a huge number of websites which can assist you with information, ready to use plans and the benefit of professional experience as well as healthy recipes and exercises similar to those available from professional programs. Some people also say that creating their own plan is more exciting than following a professional plan, and they are more likely to follow it and get good results.

These are just some of the many factors that you may want to take into consideration when trying to decide whether you should develop your own weight loss program or join a professional one. Don’t forget that if you do not get results from your own program, you can always join a professional one later.

Learn First Aid and Improve Your Family’s Safety

Moms and dads really can’t help but worry about how to keep their family safe. They would like to determine what they could do to further protect their entire family away from harm. We might believe that leaving the emergency contact numbers at speed dial on our home phones will be sufficient to help your family handle emergency situations. Yet, there are incidents that may occur that may require first aid to be able to prevent fatality or more injury. It is very important educate themselves with first aid training in order to have the essential knowledge necessary to be well prepared for unexpected situations which may place at risk the well being of the ones you love.

Learning First Aid for Family Emergencies

In Australia, first aid training courses are easy to find and you will definitely find one close to your dwelling or place of work. It will just take a short time to accomplish a first aid study course. And if you have commitments during the weekdays, you can also find first aid training programs scheduled on the weekends. The price of the programs will change based on the scope of the lessons to be tackled, training materials, and resources provided such as a first aid kit and manuals. People who have work schedules that conflict with the available first aid classes can certainly enroll online instead for much more flexibility. Save the training materials on your computer so you can look at all of them when you have some time available. You can also take your exam online. However, you still have to visit the school for your practical exams as well as complete your certification as being a first aid practitioner.

Why Studying Family First Aid is Important

Knowing what you ought to do to look after a person who is experiencing a serious or a simple injury is very important. Consequently, in order to be responsible for our family, we need to have first aid training. Taking first aid courses might be more important to good parenthood in case a a family member has a medical problem that calls for constant preparedness and attention.

This is because you simply can’t count on your doctor to be at all times be available anytime a medical emergency occurs. Among the health problems that’s frequently present in most families is asthma. There are actually prescription drugs these days that can give a quick relief for asthma sufferers. However, there have been a number of instances when the person is separated from the medication and understanding how to properly assist someone during an asthma attack might help save their life. Dealing with asthma attacks is one of the lessons given in first aid classes.

Another nurturing thing to do for our family members would be to put together a first aid kit if we are vacationing or travelling. As well as ensuring you have the medicines and supplies required to give adequate first aid, you should also outline the methods that ought to be taken for those medical emergencies that may possibly happen during the trip or vacation you will take. The basic first aid courses you may be taking will explain these first aid treatments for injuries brought on by some sort of accident outside the home.

Quality Family First Aid Kit

First aid courses will also teach you what a emergency first aid kit ought to contain. The actual contents of the first aid kit may include presciption medicine, asthma and anti-allergy medication, the things needed to cleanse and treat a wound, anti-poisoning medication, antibiotics, and other items depending on the type of vacation the family will be having.

Best Hospitals in Singapore

No matter where you go in Asia, Singapore is renowned for having some of the best medical care in the world. If you happen to get sick or become injured while you are in Singapore you can be sure that you will receive top-notch care.

Basically, you ca not go wrong in any of the hospitals in Singapore. This country boasts one of the world’s longest longevity rates as well as one of the lowest infant mortality rates. There are both government and private hospitals. All are of good quality, but the government hospitals are less expensive. The downside is you are more likely to have to wait for treatment. Although the private hospitals are more expensive, you will be treated quickly and efficiently.

I would like to give a brief overview of some of the better hospitals in Singapore.

National University Hospital is one of the most famous and largest hospitals in Singapore. It is connected with the University of Singapore and ranked among the top six in the world in 2000 by WHO. Its current strengths are in the fields of cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. You will find NUH on 5 Lower Kent Ridge Road. NUH has a whole department, the International Patient Liaison Centre which caters to foreigners seeking treatment at their hospital. Their 24-hour help line is (65)6779 2777.

Changi General Hospital serves the eastern part of Singapore. In June 2005, this hospital received Joint Commission International accreditation. At CGH, you will find an International Medical Services team that is trained to assist you in getting the treatment you need.

Mount Alvernia is another good choice, founded in 1961 by an order of Franciscan nuns. Today the hospital is still not-for-profit. This hospital specializes in mother and child care. Mount Alvernia has a 24-hour walk-in clinic and emergency room. If finances are an issue this might be the hospital for you to consider.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital was founded in 1844 through the philanthropy of Mr. Tan Tock Seng. It is the second largest hospital in Singapore. Due to its central location its accident and emergency room is the busiest in the country. It is also accredited by the Joint Commission International for keeping up with high medical standards. It is also a member of the National Healthcare Group. It may not be terribly user friendly for the foreigner.

Singapore General Hospital is the oldest (founded in 1821) and largest hospital in Singapore, located on the grounds of the Outram Park. This hospital is a government run hospital which means the costs are kept low. This does not mean that quality suffers; the nursing staff recently received the distinctive Magnet Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Thomson Medical is best known for its high quality maternity care. They also have a department devoted to caring for the International patient. In addition, they have a Korean Service department dedicated to the needs of the Korean expatriate community.

Gleneagles Hospital is one of several excellent private hospitals managed by Parkway Health in Singapore and other parts of Asia. Gleneagles focuses on providing user-friendly services, along with quality care, specialists’ expertise and modern technology; it is conveniently located near the Botanic Gardens and not far from the US embassy. Another Parkway Health hospital is Mount Elizabeth Hospital which specializes in cardiac surgery and neurosurgery.

You may want to consider Raffles Hospital another private hospital which especially caters the Japanese community. You can expect five star treatment and accommodations as well as a five-star price. This hospital gained notoriety for its landmark surgery in separating Siamese twins. Raffles makes available traditional Chinese medicine for those seeking that type of treatment.

I hope you do not have to use this information, but you never know when knowing where to find a good hospital will come in handy.

When Doctors Don’t Know What’s Wrong

The first patient I ever saw as a first year resident came in with a litany of complaints, not one of which I remember today except for one: he had headaches. The reason I remember he had headaches isn’t because I spent so much time discussing them but rather the exact opposite: at the time I knew next to nothing about headaches and somehow managed to end the visit without ever addressing his at all, even though they were the primary reason he’d come to see me.

Then I rotated on a neurology service and actually learned quite a lot about headaches. Then when my patient came back to see me a few months later, I distinctly remember at that point not only being interested in his headaches but actually being excited to discuss them.

I often find myself thinking back to that experience when I’m confronted with a patient who has a complaint I can’t figure out, and I thought it would be useful to describe the various reactions doctors have in general to patients when they can’t figure out what’s wrong, why they have them, and what you can do as a patient to improve your chances in such situations of getting good care.

Believing a wacky idea in and of itself isn’t wacky. Believing a wacky idea without proof, however, most certainly is. Likewise, disbelieving sensible ideas without disproving them when they’re disprovable is wacky as well. Unfortunately, patients are often guilty of the first thought error (“My diarrhea is caused by a brain tumor”) and doctors of the second (“brain tumors don’t cause diarrhea, so you can’t have a brain tumor”), leading in both instances to contentious doctor-patient relationships, missed diagnoses, and unnecessary suffering. Doctors sometimes aren’t willing to order tests that patients think are necessary because they think the patient’s belief about what’s wrong is wacky; they sometimes suggest a patient’s symptoms are psychosomatic when every test they run is negative but the symptoms persist; and they sometimes offer explanations for symptoms the patient finds improbable but refuse to pursue the cause of the symptoms any further.

Sometimes these judgments are correct and sometimes they’re not—but the experience of being on the receiving end of them is always frustrating for patients. However, given that your doctor has medical training and you don’t, the best strategy to use in these situations may be to do your best to ensure you’re being handed judgments based on sound scientific reasoning rather than unconscious bias.

But even the most rational scientist is teeming with unconscious biases. So an even better strategy might be to attempt to leverage your doctor’s biases in your favor.

In order to do this, you first need to know how doctors are trained to think. Medical students typically employ what’s called “novice” thinking when trying to figure out what’s wrong with patients. They run through the entire list of everything known to cause the patient’s first symptom, then a second list of everything known to cause the patient’s second symptom, and so on. Then they look to see which diagnoses appear on all their lists and that new list becomes their list of “differential diagnoses.” It’s a cumbersome but powerful technique, its name notwithstanding. A seasoned attending physician, on the other hand, typically employs “expert” thinking, defined simply as thinking that relies on pattern recognition. I’ve seen carpal tunnel syndrome so many times I could diagnose it in my sleep—but only learned to recognize the pattern of finger tingling in the first, second, and third digits, pain, and weakness occurring most commonly at night by my initial use of “novice” thinking.

The main risk of relying on “expert” thinking is early closure—that is, of ceasing to consider what else might be causing a patient’s symptoms because the pattern seems so abundantly clear. Luckily, in most cases, it is clear.

But sometimes it isn’t. In those cases, your doctor may do one or more of the following things:

1. Revert to “novice” thinking. Which, in fact, is completely appropriate. We’re taught in medical school that approximately 90% of all diagnoses are made from the history, so if we can’t figure out what’s wrong, we’re supposed to go back to the patient’s story and dig some more. This also involves reading, thinking, and possibly doing more tests, for which your doctor may or may not have the stamina.

2. Ask a specialist for help. Which requires your doctor to recognize he or she is out of his or her depth and needs help.

3. Cram your symptoms into a diagnosis he or she does recognize, even if the fit is imperfect. Though this may seem at first glance like a thought error, it often yields the correct answer. We have a saying in medicine: uncommon presentations of common diseases are more common than common presentations of uncommon diseases. In other words, presenting with a set of symptoms that are unusual or atypical for a particular disease doesn’t rule out your having that disease, especially if that disease is common. Or as one of my medical school teachers put it: “A patient’s body often fails to read the textbook.”

4. Dismiss the cause of your symptoms as coming from stress, anxiety, or some other emotional disturbance. Sometimes your doctor is unable to identify a physical cause for your symptoms and turns reflexively to stress or anxiety as the explanation, given his or her awareness that the power of the mind to manufacture physical symptoms from psychological disturbances is not only well-documented in the medical literature but a common experience most of us have had (think of “butterflies” in your stomach when you’re nervous). And sometimes your doctor will be right. A physician named John Sarno knows this well and has a cohort of patients who seem to have benefited greatly from his theory that some forms of back pain are created by unconscious anger. However, the diagnosis of stress and anxiety should never be made by exclusion (meaning every other reasonable possibility has been appropriately ruled out and stress and anxiety is all that’s left); rather, there should be positive evidence pointing to stress and anxiety as the cause (eg, you should actually be feeling stressed and anxious about something). Unfortunately, doctors frequently reach for a psychosomatic explanation for a patient’s symptoms when testing fails to reveal a physical explanation, thinking if they can’t find a physical cause then no physical cause exists. But this reasoning is as sloppy as it is common. Just because science has produced more knowledge than any one person could ever master, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to imagine we’ve exhausted the limits of all there is to know (a notion as preposterous as it is unconsciously attractive). Just because your doctor doesn’t know the physical reason your wrist started hurting today doesn’t mean the pain is psychosomatic. A whole host of physical ailments bother people every day for which modern medicine has no explanation: overuse injuries (you’ve been walking all your life and for some reason now your heel starts to hurt); extra heart beats; twitching eyelid muscles; headaches.

5. Ignore or dismiss your symptoms. This is different from the application of a “tincture of time” that doctors often employ to see if symptoms will improve on their own (as they often do). Rather, this a reaction to being confronted with a problem your doctor doesn’t understand or know how to handle. That a doctor may ignore or dismiss your symptoms unconsciously (as I did with my first-ever patient) is no excuse for doing so.

Just which of the above approaches a doctor will take when confronted with symptoms he or she can’t figure out is determined both by his or her biases and life-condition—and all doctors struggle with both. To obtain the best performance from your doctor, your objective is to get him or her into a high a life-condition and as free from the influences of his or her biases (good and bad) as possible.

Negative influences on a doctor’s life-condition include all the things that negatively influence yours, as well as the following things that may happen to them on a daily basis:

1. They fall behind in clinic. Your doctor may be naturally slow or frequently have to spend extra time with patients who are especially ill or emotionally upset.

2. They have to deal with difficult or demanding patients. Hard not to enter into a defensive, paternalistic posture when too many of these types of patients show up on your schedule.

3. They feel like they don’t have enough time to do a good job. With fewer and fewer resources, doctors are being asked (like everyone) to do more and more.

4. They have to deal with a morass of paperwork in a hopelessly inefficient health care system. The amount of time most doctors must spend justifying their decisions to third-party insurance carriers is growing at an alarming rate.

A sampling of unconscious biases that influence doctor behavior include:

1. Not wanting to diagnose bad illnesses in their patients. Leading sometimes to an incomplete list of differential diagnoses.

2. Not wanting to induce anxiety in their patients. Leading sometimes to insufficient explanations of their thought processes, which often paradoxically leads to more patient anxiety.

3. Over-relying on evidence-based medicine. Though the practice of evidence-based medicine should be the standard, many physicians forget there’s a great difference between “no evidence existing in the medical literature to link symptom X with disease Y” and “no evidence existing to link symptom X with disease Y because it’s not yet been studied.”

4. Not liking their patient. Leading to impatience, not listening, and not taking enough time to think though the patient’s complaints.

5. Liking their patient too much. Leading to biases #1 and #2.

6. Thinking a patient’s symptoms are caused by one diagnosis instead of many. Also known as Ockham’s razor, sometimes it’s true and sometimes it isn’t.

7. Wanting to be right more than wanting their patient to get better. Res ipse loquitur (the thing speaks for itself).

8. Believing their first thoughts about the diagnosis are more likely to be correct than any subsequent thoughts. If your doctor is too attached to a diagnosis simply because it’s the one he or she thought of first, or has seen it more than other, less common diagnoses, he or she may avoid pursuing other possibilities.

9. Failing to consider that a test result may be in error. This doesn’t happen commonly, but it certainly does happen.

10. Wanting to avoid feeling ineffectual. Some diagnoses are more amenable to therapy than others. No patient wants to have an untreatable illness and no doctor wants to diagnose it.

11. Having an aversion to being manipulated. Manipulation is especially common in patients suffering from chronic pain syndromes (who may at times appear drug-seeking rather than pain relief-seeking). No one likes to be manipulated, but a wise mentor of mine once said, “The question isn’t whether or not your patients will try to manipulate you. The question is how will they try to manipulate you.” Coming to terms with this truth is vital for any doctor to have successful relationships with their patients.

Unfortunately, your ability to raise your doctor’s life-condition is as limited as your ability to raise anyone else’s, and even more so when you don’t feel well. Good humor, if you can muster it, may be your best option.

But in dealing with your doctor’s biases, you have on your side a fact I firmly believe to be true: most doctors want to do a good job and help their patients as best they can. So what exactly can you do to maximize your doctor’s ability to help you?

1. Position your symptoms and requests carefully. Don’t demand medications or tests. Ask about them. Wonder about them. It’s perfectly all right to bring up research you’ve done about your symptoms, but explicitly express your openness to the possibility that your ideas might be wrong. Not that you should aim for subservience by any means, but rather for a genuine partnership.

2. Remain reasonable even when you’re irritated. Most doctors, even when stressed, will respond to reason and reasonableness in kind.

3. If your doctor suggests your symptoms might be due to stress, acknowledged they may be right. Even if you disagree. First of all, your doctor may be right, even if it doesn’t feel that way to you. Secondly, if you dismiss the notion out of hand, you might make your doctor defensive and therefore more likely to cling to an idea that a moment before was only one possibility among many.

4. Ask questions that promote transparent, logical thinking. Many doctors don’t explain their thought processes clearly. Write all your questions down before your visits and ask smart questions that actually help your doctor think through your symptoms and his or her approach to working them up (“What possibilities will this test rule in or out?” “What else is on your list of possible diagnoses?”). Of course, this presumes you’re comfortable knowing the answers. I recommend you summon your courage to ask these questions, however, because they’ll encourage sharper thinking from your doctor.

5. Be explicit about how you want your doctor to work with you. Show them you’re interested in understanding the process of medical detective work. Position yourself as your doctor’s student. Nothing helps improve someone’s thought process like having to explain it to someone else.

6. Ask your doctor to explain the risks and benefits of any proposed test or treatment quantitatively. Get percentages for risks and compare them to the risks of activities you tolerate every day. For instance, your annual risk of dying from a motor vehicle accident is 0.016%. You’d be surprised how many worrisome side effects to drugs, for example, occur at an even lower frequency.

7. Get second opinions. And sometimes third opinions. And sometimes more. Do this carefully, recognizing that in doing so you risk ending up even more confused than you were with only one opinion. But don’t assume because your doctor doesn’t know what’s going on that no one else does either. There’s almost no way for you to be sure your doctor doesn’t know what’s wrong because he or she doesn’t know or because no one knows. Sometimes you have to go through multiple doctors until you finally find the right one with the right experience to figure out your problem (if your insurance will let you, of course). Neither doctors nor patients like to acknowledge this, but serendipity sometimes plays a role in finding the right diagnosis. I once figured out why a patient had been nauseated for 30 years after they’d been seen by almost as many doctors. The patient said something that just happened to make me think of an obscure diagnosis I’d never seen but had read about. I looked it up, sent the patient for a test, and found the answer.

I have a small cadre of patients who suffer from symptoms more horrible than I can describe, some with known diagnoses and some without. In all cases, my ability to help them is tragically limited. Sometimes I want to ignore these patients. Sometimes I cringe when they call, not because I don’t like them or because they complain to me too much or because I don’t care about them but because I have so little real relief to offer them. I know how much my simply being present and being willing to listen has meant to them (they tell me this all the time) and I don’t discount it. And I do my best to diagnose and treat what problems I can and sympathize with them when I can’t. But it’s hard. I must constantly be on guard not to fall under the influence of the thought errors and biases I’ve described here. So while I hope everyone who reads this post finds it helpful, the person to whom I actually wrote it was myself.

Ford Unveils Bio-Ethanol Powered Focus

The importance of a clean and green environment cannot be overemphasized in today’s modern world. In this regard, Ford, with the stirring desire to save the environment from its premature destruction, has entertained exciting new car concepts that will lead to this end. This desire led to the materialization of the Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV).

Recently, Ford has unveiled the concept of bio-ethanol powered Coupé-Cabriolet Flexible Fuel Vehicle, which boosts both the style and environment preservation cause. Said car was displayed by Ford Motor Company on the blue oval stand during the British International Motor Show.

Based on the research from Imperial College, London, Ford’s 1.8-litre FFV technology in the Coupé-Cabriolet concept, has achieved a true CO 2 emissions figure of 99.6g/km. This datum beats other vehicles that utilize said hybrid technology.

During an interview, Roelant de Waard, chairman and managing director of Ford Britain said, “Ford is Britain’s leading bio-fuel car manufacturer after launching Britain’s first Flexible Fuel Vehicle almost a year ago. Our new FFVs, the Coupé-Cabriolet concept and C-MAX show that every model in the Focus range – Britain’s top-selling car – can run on renewable bio-ethanol.”

“Both Ford as vehicle manufacturer, and Morrisons as bio-ethanol retailer, have invested in the expansion of this new green technology. Now the Government needs to join us and make flexible fuel motoring an even more attractive option for UK customers,” de Waard further said.

Today, Ford Focus parts are especially engineered to cater to the cause of Ford, which is to aid in attaining a clean environment. The Ford Focus LX as an FFV, which can run on bio-ethanol or petrol in any mix in the same tank, a petrol-only model, is valued from £14,045. Ford Motor Company has released the car last year. It was the very first bio-fuel car on sale.

With the latest developments in the automotive industry as well as other industries, it will not be hard to preserve Earth. Indeed, every one deserves clean environment to be fit.

The Incapacitation Effect of Incarceration

Even though our prisons fail in their goals of deterrence and rehabilitation, there is one way they succeed: incapacitation. When criminals are in prison, they cannot commit crimes in the free world. They still commit crimes in prison.

Incapacitation now ranks as the primary justification for prison. Society has almost given up on rehabilitation, the original goal of the penitentiary. When Congress abolished parole in the federal criminal justice system, they found point-blank that rehabilitation efforts have largely failed.

Some studies show great value in temporarily preventing crime with incapacitation. One found that for each convict released due to prison overcrowding litigation, over a dozen crimes are committed, at a cost of above the average cost of keeping a prisoner for one year. Another found the cost of releasing a criminal to be over 10 times the cost of incarceration. Many inmates unless confined commit something like 200 crimes per year. One economist found four reasons for the marked decrease in U.S. crime, starting in about 1991: the rising prison population, more police, the receding crack cocaine epidemic and the legalization of abortion. One advantage of prison is that it gives young men and women time to mature. After lengthy prison sentences, older, more mature offenders are less likely to re-offend violently than when they were younger.

The incapacitation effect literally keeps crimes from occurring. The early release of prisoners, brought on by budgetary and financial difficulties, causes crime to increase, especially in the large urban areas to which criminals usually return. The revolving door of recidivism usually means that felons return to the same problematic urban environment when released. While logic and data will instruct authorities as to the least threatening prisoners to release, given current recidivism rates, the early release of multiple prisoners inevitably causes an increase in crime. While incarceration itself is harmful and may increase the propensity of a criminal to recidivate, that increased likelihood is small or inflexible compared to the huge decrease in crime brought about by the complete incapacitation of offenders while incarcerated.

Modern prisons do not rehabilitate or deter crime very well, but prisoners do not deserve to be in the free world, where they would commit many more crimes than they do in prison. We need to look at other methods of handling our massive problems. The benefits of prisons – punishment and incapacitation – can greatly increase in a way to benefit society. To do this, we must believe in work… hard work. To achieve maximum benefit for the law-abiding portions of society, prisoners must work productively while incarcerated, earning what they consume. Many laws that inhibit prison labor and industries must be repealed. To obtain more work out of inmates, we must get them out of their tiny cells, over those current legal barriers, and into a controlled, productive, private enterprise work environment.

Then they can start paying their debts to society. In the process of truly working many more prisoners, we will return the proper focus to helping law-abiding people. At the same time, we will help more prisoners change for the better. Work and crime are opposites.

Acupuncture Clinic Marketing – 3 Clinic Marketing Tips to Make You More Money

Dear Forward-Thinking Acupuncturist,

Successful acupuncturists all have one thing in common, they’re never 100% happy with their current level of financial success. They always want more, and one of the biggest ways to increase the number of patients you see in your acupuncture clinic is by using powerful direct-response marketing. Whether you are making $20,000 a year or $1 million a year in your clinic, there’s always a possibility for growth.

Your acupuncture clinics growth strongly depends on the mindset you have and the wealth attraction beliefs you have been trained to follow. You can’t grow you acupuncture practice without knowing, whole-heartedly, that you have the ability to drive massive amounts of patients to your clinic.

You really have to believe that.

Here are 3 easy ways that you can transform your acupuncture clinic from the level it’s at, into a profit making machine.

1. Always track your marketing statistics

This might appear to be a bit obvious but most acupuncturists never do it. You should always track and gather as much information as possible. Track how many prospective patients walked into your clinic, track how many prospective patients actually converted into paying patients, evaluate your marketing, keep an eye for side products you might have that your patients are buying, how many patients come back within a certain amount of time, how many prospective patients don’t decide to work with you, and so on…

With all of this information you’ll be more educated as to how you acupuncture clinic’s marketing dollars are doing and where you can increase (and decrease) your efforts.

2. Find people you can trust

For my websites I have one person that does all of my work for me. I can send him all of the ideas I have running around in my head and he and his team make my dreams come true, literally. I can pay him in advance and know that he’s going to get everything done and give me weekly status reports so I don’t end up twiddling my fingers, “hoping” that my website will be done on time.

You really do need people you can trust and depend on. Everyone likes to feel as if they did everything on their own but without help you might as well close up shop and go home. This is why having a marketing coach or consultant is crucial to your clinics success. They have the proven blueprint for you to have a thriving acupuncture clinic and practice.

3. Develop your passion

Sometimes I need to go outside and just stare into the night sky to remember why I’m doing what I’m doing. It’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of everyday hassles and get unmotivated. It happens to everyone. Sometimes taking yourself out of what you routine is, even if it’s just for a day, can work wonders for your imagination and ultimately boost the creative juices you use for your acupuncture clinic’s marketing. Use this time away to revive your passion.

The next time you feel unmotivated and down, remember these 3 simple business tips and put them to use in your acupuncture clinic.

How to Treat Graves’ Disease Naturally

If you have been diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, want to avoid taking medication if at all possible, and don’t even want to consider treating your condition with radioactive iodine, then the information you’re about to read can be life changing. I am a licensed healthcare professional and was personally diagnosed with Graves’ Disease. Knowing that this is a serious autoimmune thyroid condition, I honestly wasn’t sure if I would rely on natural treatment methods, even though I without question have a natural mindset.

The problem is that Graves’ Disease can be life threatening if the symptoms are not controlled, and as a result, I didn’t take my high pulse rate and palpitations lightly. I did consider receiving a combination of the conventional medical treatments and the natural treatment protocol, which I do recommend for some patients. But although my pulse rate was much higher than normal (in the mid 90’s, when it was usually in the mid 60’s), I didn’t consider it to be too extreme, and thus decided to go strictly with a natural treatment protocol and not take any prescription medication (the endocrinologist I consulted with recommended Methimazole and a beta blocker).

As for radioactive iodine, this is something I planned to avoid at all costs. In my opinion, this harsh treatment method should be used only as a last resort, as most people who “choose” this treatment method will become hypothyroid. Even when someone with Graves’ Disease has an extremely high pulse rate (for example, greater than 120 beats per minute), radioactive iodine usually isn’t needed to control the symptoms, as taking a beta blocker will usually accomplish this. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, and there are some circumstances where taking radioactive iodine is necessary.

Warning: Don’t Treat Graves’ Disease On Your Own:

It’s truly amazing how many different conditions people try to treat naturally on their own. They simply do some research on the internet, find out what nutritional supplements and/or herbs might be able to help, and visit their local health food store and purchase these supplements. For some conditions this isn’t a problem, but for a serious autoimmune condition such as Graves’ Disease, this is definitely not recommended. You should either be under the care of an endocrinologist, a competent natural doctor, or in some cases, both types of healthcare professionals.

As for whether you should take the prescribed medication, which usually consists of a drug like Methimazole, and/or a beta blocker, such as Propranolol, this obviously is something that only you can decide. Obviously an endocrinologist or general practitioner that prescribes these drugs will think that a conventional protocol is the best option, which in some cases it might be. On the other hand, a holistic doctor will often think that a natural treatment protocol will be the best option for treating this condition. Your best bet is to speak with both types of healthcare professionals, gather as much information as you can, and then make an informed decision on your own.

While I’m not at all opposed to a patient taking the prescription drugs, what they do need to keep in mind is that these medications are not getting to the underlying cause of the disorder. So while taking them in the short term to manage the symptoms might not be a bad idea, you also need to consider the potential consequences of taking these drugs for a long period of time. I personally can’t tell a patient to stop taking the drugs, but if I was in a situation where I had extreme symptoms, I would have probably taken the beta blocker to control the symptoms for a month or two (mainly the high pulse rate and palpitations), along with following the natural treatment protocol, and then would have weaned myself off the medication and evaluate my symptoms.

Because the fact remains that there are natural remedies that will help control the symptoms while you are trying to restore your overall health. For example, one of the herbal remedies I took that helped with my symptoms was Bugleweed, which is for people with hyperthyroidism. Motherwort is another herbal remedy that can help with the symptoms of Graves’ Disease. Now once again, I’m not suggesting that anyone with a high pulse rate and palpitations replace their medication with these herbal remedies. Although these herbal remedies are powerful, everybody’s condition is different, which is why you really should consult with a competent healthcare professional.

Let’s Not Forget To Address The Immune System

While Graves’ Disease is often labeled as being a “thyroid disorder”, one can’t forget that the immune system is affected, and it is therefore important to address the immune system component. In fact, one can argue that the immune system component should be addressed before focusing on the thyroid gland. And in some cases, strengthening the immune system alone can restore someone’s health back to normal. Echinacea and Selenium can help strengthen the immune system. When I began my natural treatment protocol I also took a product called Rehmannia Complex, which is a product from the nutritional company Standard Process.

The adrenal glands are usually affected too, and therefore should also be evaluated. Since most medical doctors don’t properly evaluate the adrenals (and most won’t attempt to evaluate this area at all), I ordered an Adrenal Stress Index test for myself, which is a saliva-based test that measures the cortisol levels at different times of the day. Initially when I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, I had low cortisol levels in the morning and early afternoon. But the natural treatment protocol helped bring my cortisol levels back to normal. Some supplements I took to help with the adrenals included an adrenal support formula (also manufactured by Standard Process), as well as Eleuthero.

Of course the quality of the supplements used are important. You need to be careful, as while there are some great nutritional supplement companies out there, many companies produce low quality products. Even some of those sold in health food stores aren’t of the highest quality. I have tried products from many different companies, and some of the best products I have used on myself and on patients are produced by a company called Standard Process, as they have been producing quality supplements for many years. The only bad news is that you can’t purchase these supplements from a health food store, as they are only distributed by healthcare professionals.

I don’t want to give you the impression that taking nutritional supplements and herbal remedies alone will be enough to restore your health back to normal. There are actually five main factors to help aid the recovery process for someone that has an autoimmune thyroid disorder. These include 1) having a good attitude, 2) proper nutrition, 3) getting ample sleep, 4) regular exercise, and 5) doing a good job of managing stress. All of these are important if you want to use natural treatment methods to restore the function of your thyroid gland back to normal, assuming this is possible.

Other Symptoms Associated With Graves’ Disease That Can Be Helped Through Natural Treatment Methods:

While I have spoken about symptoms such as having a high pulse rate and palpitations, there are of course other symptoms that are common with Graves’ Disease. In addition to the high pulse rate and palpitations, I personally experienced weight loss, increased appetite, and shakiness. Upon beginning the natural treatment protocol it wasn’t too long before I noticed my pulse rate and the palpitations decreasing, as well as the shakiness. In fact, I remember clearly that when it was first suspected that I had a thyroid disorder and a had blood drawn, when I held my arm out for the nurse my arm was noticeably shaking. But once again, this was one of the first symptoms to go away when I began the natural treatment protocol.

The last symptom to disappear was the increased appetite, as after a few months I had a regular pulse rate, no palpitations or shakiness, and was gaining weight. But I still had a voracious appetite. But eventually this symptom disappeared too, and along with not having any more symptoms, it was of course great to see the blood tests confirm that I no longer was hyperthyroid.

As for whether natural treatment methods can help with your autoimmune thyroid disorder, just keep in mind that everyone is different, which of course means that not everyone will be an ideal candidate to receive these treatment methods. Some people will need to take medicine, while others will benefit from a combination of both conventional and natural treatment protocols. I will conclude this article by suggesting that anyone that has been diagnosed with Graves’ Disease at least consider speaking with a competent natural doctor, especially before you consider getting treated with radioactive iodine.

But even if your endocrinologist or general practitioner is conservative like mine was and recommends Methimazole and a beta blocker, keep in mind that these prescription drugs won’t do anything to restore your health back to normal. So while they might do a great job of controlling the symptoms, they will usually leave the immune system in a weakened state, leaving you more susceptible to other autoimmune conditions in the future. And just remember that consulting with a natural doctor doesn’t mean you will be forced to choose a natural treatment protocol, but will simply give you more valuable information to help you make an informed decision, so you won’t have any regrets in the future.

The Smoke and Mirrors of Health Care Reform for the Elderly

I’m deeply concerned that the American public, especially our nation’s elders, will be relying on our government to provide long term care services they’ll never see. They’ll only see the “smoke and mirrors” of Health Care Reform.

Our nation’s seniors are the most vulnerable segment of the U.S. population; vulnerable both health wise and financially. They’re silently discovering the savings they thought would be enough is not enough. They’re silently fearful of running out of money with no one to care for them as they become more frail. The silence is about to become deafening.

Regrettably, when Health Care Reform proudly announced New Long Term Care Services, it discouraged many American’s from purchasing Long Term Care Insurance.

The New York Times reported on ‘Options Expand for Affordable Long-Term Care’ THE NEW OLD AGE. The Associated Press announced ‘New Health Care Law Has Benefits for Seniors’. Point being, the casual reader was relieved to hear their government will “take care of them” when they need long term care services. We now know that is not about to happen.

Fortunately our representatives in Washington discovered that Health Care Reforms answer to the problem of Long Term Care, “CLASS”, (Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act) legislation would have been fiscally unsound. $70 billion in premiums that was expected to be raised for the new “long term care” program would have been counted as “deficit reduction”. The long term care benefits it was intended to finance were assumed not to materialize in the first 10 years. However, that money was not accounted for anywhere in the legislation.

The new legislation proposed to “trim” $463 billion from Medicare. Yet Medicare is currently having trouble balancing its books today. Yet, why does the health care bill tell us Medicare can operate more cheaply going forward without the accompanying reforms?

Our national media gave enormous fanfare to the CLASS ACT when it passed. Unfortunately the media has given the CLASS ACT’s demise little attention. Now what?

Projections show that the federal deficit is expected to exceed $700 billion annually over the next decade. This essentially will double the national and $900 billion represents interest on previous debt. Would the CFO of any major corporation in the United States allow the company he worked for to end up in this type of financial position? Absolutely not.

Our officials in Congress have been elected to protect the best interests of the American people. “Robbing Peter to pay Paul”, and once again printing more currency, has become our government’s mantra for the future. Yet the magnitude of the mismanagement of America’s purse strings has now reached an unconscionable state.

The United States of America cannot continue to mismanage its financial future. Future Congresses will have to deliver a multitude of future reforms and, regrettably, history tells us THAT will never happen. Proposals for financing health reform were based on more “smoke and mirrors”. The “Cadillac” tax is scheduled to begin in 2018.

The health care legislation that has been forced on each and every one of us is known to be fiscally unsound. Where do we go from here? It’s too easy to point the finger at the President and his administration. Yet Congress owns the responsibility of passing Health Care Legislation. And THAT is the problem.

The 535 voting members of Congress shared the responsibility equally. If one clear thinking, intelligent, honorable Congressman had the entire responsibility for Health Care Reform, he or she would not have forced a fiscally unsound Health Care Reform Bill down our throats.

Now let’s again evaluate how Health Care Reform will work against our senior citizens.

A most recent government report identified that in 2000 there were 1.8 million available nursing home beds. As the year 2010 came to a close, there were 1.7 million nursing home beds; a net 5 percent reduction in available beds. And, there are no new nursing homes being built.

Today there’s less than 1.5 million Americans confined to nursing homes. Reportedly 10 percent of these nursing homes are operating under bankruptcy protection. It’s well known that most of these facilities are understaffed and many don’t have competent help.

Next, let’s consider that the Alzheimer’s Association tells us the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s after age 85 is 50 percent. By 2030, they tell us that the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.7 million, a 50 percent increase from the 5.2 million age 65 and older currently affected.

The logical question I must ask is “if we cannot take adequate care of 1.5 million people today, how can we possibly take care of 7.7 million people in 2030?” We cannot. More simply put, when you or your spouse or your parent has Alzheimer’s, there is no place for them to go. Not to be cruel, but if you ever think for a moment about taking in an aged parent with Alzheimer’s into your home, please think again. Ask any caregiver who’s been through it. It’s GUARANTEED to destroy any families’ peace of mind and harmony.

Why aren’t our political leaders actively working on solutions? Where’s the outcry? Regrettably our political leaders only align themselves with solvable problems.

America’s seniors became more hopeful reading that Health Reform will help them with added Long Term Care services. And we now know THAT is not going to happen. There are no plans in place to help our nation’s seniors think they’ll receive the comfort and dignity of adequate long term care services. What’s worse is the silence shared by all our political leaders. The silence is now deafening.

Now there’s newfound hope on the horizon. We have a new President election just starting to evolve. What the Republican and Democratic candidates have to say about our nations seniors need for long term care services? What do they think about the need for 7.7 million Americans with Alzheimer’s that need a place to spend the night and be cared for when we can’t take care of 1.5 million seniors today?

The national media needs to start reporting that our nation’s seniors will have no place to spend the night when they become too old or frail to take care of themselves. Then the upcoming election presents one more opportunity for our political leaders to pay attention to our nation’s elderly and their need for long term care services.
