A Gun For Sale By Graham Greene

On the face of it, A Gun For Sale by Graham Greene is a genre thriller, featuring a crime committed by a confessed and declared villain, followed by a police pursuit. In the hands of a great writer, however, even clichés such as this can be transformed into thoroughly satisfying novels.

First published in 1936, A Gun For Sale is set in a Europe over which war looms constantly and threateningly, casting a shadow of fear and even depression over all human interaction. Graham Greene appears to use this context to allow the book to make a significant, yet very subtle point, an assertion that conflicts, even grand conflicts like wars, are pursued by interests, instigated by an intention to profit. The grander the conflict, the greater the potential gain. As individuals vie for influence, prominence, control and dominance, so do societies, groups, companies, even countries. And some of the protagonists play dirty, rarely receiving the comeuppance of justice. When they do, we are gratified, sensing the same rightness that a happy ending might provoke.

A Gun For Sale has several important characters, more than a review can list. Raven is the first we meet, the blackness of his name immediately suggesting a functionality for the plot, for he is the anti-hero, the hired gun who completes the bloody assignment in the book’s first pages. Hare-lipped and ever resentful of his disfigurement, both physical and, as a result of a painful upbringing, psychological, he suggests a figure that the reader might be invited to despise, perhaps a pantomime bogeyman of genre fiction, always accompanied by a threatening, trademark fanfare.

But Graham Greene is not that mundane a writer. We eventually come to know Raven well. Though we are never actually invited to like him, we eventually sympathise with his plight, if only by virtue of the fact that there are some apparent social heroes who in reality are a darned sight more deserving of our contempt. Raven is double-crossed and sets out to track down the perpetrator of his humiliation.

Raven leaves a trail and a policeman, Mather, takes up the pursuit. By chance Mather’s girlfriend, Anne, boards the same train as Raven from London to Nottwich, an industrial town were she will appear in the chorus line of a pantomime. Raven and Anne meet and, viewed from the distance of the pursuer, become accomplices.

Mather’s fellow copper, Sanders, is an interesting foil to Raven. Both are disfigured. Raven’s problem is with appearance and he yearns to be rid of the hare-lip that disfigures his face, a disfigurement that Anne plays down, thus engendering his trust. The policeman Sanders, on the other hand, stammers. He is quick of wit, but not of voice, and is aware that his impediment has cost him promotion.

Mr Davis, also known as Cholmondley, amongst other things, is the greasy lackey employed by Sir Marcus. The latter is an industrialist, owner of a steelworks in Nottwich, a business that has seen better times. Mr Davis is a right cad, regarding theatre girls as fair game, regularly picking them up and persuading them into the grubby room he rents from a truly surreal couple in order to protect his reputation. The freemason Sir Marcus is barely clinging to life, but he retains sufficient pride, or malice, perhaps, to inflict untold suffering on others, merely to retain his own status in a future he does not have.

And so Raven pursues Cholmondley, who answers to Marcus. Mather and Saunders pursue Raven, and Anne seems to be on everyone’s side. And it all works out.

But Graham Greene does much more than tell a tale. Through simple language and structure, and via a plot that would grace a b-movie at best, he penetrates his characters’ psyches, locates them in social class and history, and manages with a deft lightness of touch to convey a remarkably strong sense of place, setting and context. Through his simply constructed prose, we see people, places and events from a multiplicity of perspectives and are left with a complexity of associations with every character. And that, precisely, is why cliché is left far behind.

There is nothing worse than to need a first aid kit only to discover that the bandages or another ingredient is missing because it was used during a household crisis.

Last But Not Least

Another important item that should be included in your first aid kit is a complete plan for how you and your loved ones will find each other in the event of an emergency. After all, there’s no telling when such an event will take place. This means that when you least expect it, some kind of emergency might take place and you will need to gather where you have agreed to. You should not only have this plan on paper in your emergency kit, but each family member should know where and how they are to meet if an event of this type takes place.

On any given day, at any time during that day, an emergency could find the members of your family anywhere in an area. Perhaps parents are at work while children are at school. What is your plan to gather together in order to be in one place. Don’t plan on traditional means of transportation being available in such a crisis. And don’t plan on telephone communications being available. Plan instead on any and every eventuality, and make sure that everyone understands what they will need to do.

Hospitals in general go to great lengths to make sure their buildings are sterile, but nearly 2% of the patients who die each year die of infections they caught while in the hospital. Hospitals usually go to great lengths to keep sterile. In some cases, fatal hospital infections are not completely preventable. But in many cases, the hospital could have done much more to ensure sanitary conditions. If someone you love died from a preventable hospital infection, you need the help of a lawyer.

The fact that hospital patients are typically very ill means their immune systems are weaker than when they are healthy. Due to their weakened immune systems, hospital patients are likelier to die from relatively minor infections. Deaths from urinary tract infections are often the result of catheters that are not sanitized well or nurses who do not sanitize the area before inserting it. Surgical infections are also frequently the result of inadequate sterilization before, during, or after the operation was performed. Pneumonia frequently develops after an infection in the respiratory tract gets out of control, something hospitals are usually able to prevent by monitoring patients for infections and acting quickly when one is noticed.

Characteristics of a Good Doctor

If you would like to become successful in your profession then it is essential for you to fulfil its requirements. If you want to become a medical doctor then there are some important points that you should keep in mind. The six important characteristics of a doctor are as below:

The first thing that you need to understand is that being a doctor would require you to bear much more responsibilities than other professions. Unlike other professions, who would hardly require an emergency to be handled at off office hours, a doctor might need to do this frequently throughout his or her career. You have to understand that this profession would require you to be present at just about any time and you should be ready and committed for this task.

Another important trait of a medical doctor is compassion. Unless you are compassionate and sensible towards your patients, you will not be able to cure them. This does not means that you have to become emotional with them. You should be professional, but compassionate while treating your patients. At the same time, you should not get emotionally attached to them because if you do so, then you might not be able to operate them or treat them to the best of your potential.

As a medical doctor, you have to be honest in your professional and sincere to your job. You should stick to the fundamentals of health and try to motivate your patients all the time. You should encourage them to involve themselves in healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyle. Medicines should only be prescribed when necessarily and patients should be encouraged in all possible ways so that their body becomes strong and it develops resistance towards ailment. In short, in order to become a good doctor, you should first learn to become a good human.

As a doctor, it is your responsibility to ensure that each and every patient that comes for treatment is treated to the best of your ability. If a patient gets successfully treated by you, then he is most likely to recommend you to others and in that way you will also get popular and for all the right reasons! All these points will shape your profession really well and help you to become a successful doctor.

Biomechanical Functional Training for Tennis and Everyday Function at Sixty

I am 60 and 5 hours, awake and writing this post at 5 am, situation normal for my age group where sleeping late is replaced by afternoon power naps. In this post and attached video you can see some of my daily functional training regime which has enabled me to be fit for the demands of my sport and a range of functions in everyday life at 60.

It’s now early May and later this month it will be a year since I first heard of Applied Functional Science, working initially with Troy Bradley (GIFT Fellow) in rehab and then studying for a foundation course with the Gray Institute. Applied Functional Science seeks to understand how the body was designed to work and the Gray Institute uses these truths to devise programmes for injury prevention, rehabilitation and athletic development, all of which differ greatly from traditional approaches and in my direct experience, are much more effective. The Gray Institute trains professionals who work with clients of all ages and abilities in rehab, prevention strategies and athletic development and have recently joined with Nike to develop an Applied Functional Science Golf instructors programme.

As a tennis coach with some experience of fitness programmes, Applied functional science techniques appear to work with the body, as it was designed, to achieve functional performance gains. The routines look like the function your training for, working your muscles and joints in function, in a chain reaction, in all three planes of motion with the forces of gravity, ground reaction, mass and momentum. Training the abdominals using AFS techniques illustrates the difference in approach with conventional methods. In the past, I have struggled and strained with sit ups and ab crunches in a vain attempt to add some definition and performance strength to my abdominals, with no appreciable or lasting benefits.

The abdominals are four layers of big muscles that link the upper and lower parts of the body and respond best to training in the way they were designed to work, as part of a chain reaction in function. Laying on your back doing sit ups does not look like anything the abs were designed to do and ultimately will not be effective training for anything other than laying on your back doing sit ups. You may get some definition but you are not training for strength in function

My abs training is part of a whole body workout of the muscles and joints in the chain working in all three planes with the forces of gravity, ground reaction, mass and momentum. It’s beginning to sound like a broken record but it is the way that I have trained, for almost a year, which has meant that I play tennis on a par with forty year olds (some) and have the range of motion and strength in my muscles and joints to perform everyday tasks that a year ago were a problem for me.

The training method I use to develop and maintain my general level of fitness for function includes balance reach, lunge and squat matrices and an abdominal dumbbell matrix all of which are based on the principles of Applied Functional Science.

I use Tri-stretch to increase the training gains from my routines and include below an explanation of it’s benefits from the inventor Dr. Mary Repking, PT. “An understanding of the interaction of all joints in all three planes of movement with gravity and ground reaction forces is needed to perform optimum stretching of the musculature. All joints need to have their full range of motion in all three planes of movement to allow the body to move without deviation from normal biomechanics. When a joint is restricted in its motion (secondary to a shortened soft tissue), any force that drives the joint into motion it does not have will result in breakdown or acute injury to that joint or in structures somewhere above or below it within the kinetic chain. Maintaining tri-planar flexibility is therefore important for the athlete as well as the person attempting to stay fit. Application of functional biomechanics to the exercises that the athlete performs and to the equipment that is utilized provides for a much more systematic progression of strength and balance training.”

I have increased the levels of my training routines over time, building on success at each level. They work for me and are not intended as medical and or training advice for anyone else. Cemented and Non-Cemented Knee Replacements

When you are in the process of getting a knee replaced, your orthopedic surgeon will have the options of either cementing your knee prosthesis into place or, not using cement and allowing the surrounding bone to fix itself to the prosthetic components.

This is something you as the patient want to be sure you understand and discuss with your surgeon regarding the advantages and disadvantages of both procedures and, what method your surgeon is considering. This also is very important information to know during your rehabilitation process and your physical rehabilitation professional will be sure to have that information in hand while in your recovery.

The main difference when it comes to physical rehabilitation is that with the cemented knee prosthesis you will be allowed to weight bear as tolerated on the affected leg. With a non cemented knee prosthesis, you will be given special instructions on how much body weight you can place on the affected leg.

In a cemented knee prosthesis, the type of adhesive used is a special cement called polymethylmethacrylate which dries very quickly and is stable within minutes. Most knee replacements done today are cemented. The advantages of a having a cemented knee replacement is you are able to get out of bed and walk on it immediately with the aid of a walker placing as much weight through your knee as you can tolerate.

The rehabilitation process also moves quicker as you do not have weight-bearing restrictions to follow. When someone has a knee replaced that is not cemented, the rehabilitation process will be slower due to the extra weight-bearing precautions. In some cases where I have worked with patients that have the non cemented procedure completed, they may be following non-weight bearing precautions for up to six or eight weeks.

The thinking in considering whether to use a cemented or non cemented knee prosthesis will involve someones age for instance. If you were considered a younger adult, your surgeon may have been tempted to use a non cemented replacement.

The thought being that you more than likely would need a knee revision at some point as you age and, will develop wear and tear on the prosthesis. The revision may be easier to perform if the prosthesis is not secured by the strong adhesive that has to be broken loose. Also there was the consideration of cement debris breaking loose and causing or speeding up the loosening of the knee prosthetic over time.

Cementless components have not been used as long as cemented ones have. Conclusive long term use is not absolute at this time. In the short-term both have comparable levels of success however.

Your orthopedic surgeon will have an idea during consultation what method he may prefer to use. If you are looking for quicker recovery after surgery due to work obligations or if you are over the age of 55, consider going with the cemented fixation.

A Day in the Life of a Veterinary Technician Working in a Clinic

The veterinary clinic is the one place that most people associate a veterinary technician working in. This position is one of many vet tech jobs that many of the credentialed veterinary technicians have to choose from and is the most popular one. The vet technician training does not always teach the student how to handle stressful situations. This can cause a problem for a new vet tech when they were not expecting to have to handle these types of situations during the course of their work day. When the first time there is a day that does not go quite right, this individual may be surprised. This veterinary tech working in a clinic environment will perform many duties during the course of a day and not every day will go as scheduled.

When the morning started off very calm and everything went as scheduled and then, in the afternoon, it suddenly becomes quite bizarre with one emergency after another, the stress began. The first incident began the afternoon at the front desk when everyone wanted to be checked in or out at the same time, the next in an exam room where the animal was very scared and crying and screaming at the same time, and the next in the surgery room when the animal was bleeding profusely and efforts to stop it were not working. This can make for a highly stressful day and at the end of it the new vet tech can not wait to leave.

Then, at 5:00 PM, a pet owner comes running in holding their very sick little dog. So, this day will be not only stressful, but extra long. This may make the vet tech wonder if the veterinary tech salary is worth the stress. During this day, the vet tech has given injections, taken x-rays, assisted at the front desk by answering the phone and scheduling appointments and checking patients in and out of the clinic, stitched up large gashes on a cat that was attached by a wild coyote, restrained an animal that was very afraid of the large veterinarian when he came in the room to exam him, and worked overtime to calm down an emotional pet owner and take care of her sick pet. After a calm morning, and a stressful and long afternoon, the day ended on a good note when the vet tech was able use the knowledge he learned at the vet technician school to diagnose and treat the last patient of the day and send the pet home with the emotional pet owner calmed down and very appreciative. This is what makes the vet tech realize why they went into this profession, for the care they can give to the animals that come into the clinic and for the gratification it can bring back to them.
