Find a Doctor Before You Need One

In some places around the world, patients are charged for medical care when they are well, but are charged nothing when they are sick. In the United States, things are the other way around. You pay for medical care at all times, of course, but few people bother to realize what they need to find. Doctor professionals are necessary even when you they are well. This can lead to clinics and hospitals feeling something akin to the holiday rush at those times of the year when everyone seems to be catching that bug that’s going around. But with the proper planning, you can prepare for these instances. Find a doctor before you need one and you’ll be sure to have the care you need when you do.

Physicians in all parts of the country are usually very busy. If you are not an established patient at a particular office, it can take months to get an appointment. If you are having chronic chest pain, or difficulty taking deep breaths, or if your carpal tunnel is acting up, you might have to simply live with it for a long time before you get that appointment. This is why it is so important to find a doctor when you are completely well. You can establish that relationship, be seen by the office as a priority patient, and be sure you can get in to see your physician when things go awry.

Of course, there are other benefits to establishing a long term relationship with a practitioner. The truth is that few people are enough in tune with their bodies to know for sure whether they really are well. There could easily be problems brewing beneath the surface. It can’t be overstates how crucial early detection is in healing almost any problem or disease the human body faces. The more advanced the illness, the more difficult it will be for even modern medicine to cure it. When these things are found at an early stage, the physician will have many more options when it comes to successful treatment.

There is a final benefit to having a physician you see on a regular basis. If you need to see a specialist, they can give you a referral that will not only save you the hassle of searching high and low for a good doctor, but will be able to jump you past a long waiting line of appointments. When you need care, you often need it right now. Having a referral from a respected general practitioner can ensure that you get it.

A Brief Bio of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a truly prolific writer, publishing his first short story, “The Mystery of Sasassa Valley” in 1879 before he was 20 years old. He was still in medical school at the University of Edinburgh at the time. Throughout his lifetime, he wrote short stories, novels, plays, poems, and pamphlets.

Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 22 1859 and he died at “Windlesham,” his home in Crowborough, East Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930 of a heart attack at 71.

Doyle served his community as a medical doctor, but while waiting for patients to show up, he had plenty of time to write his short stories.. He created the character of Sherlock Holmes in one of his early stories and just kept writing about him, despite his attempt to kill him off. The public would have nothing to do with that, so he kept writing.

Doyle’s most famous character was based on Dr. Joseph Bell, Conan Doyle’s favorite professor at medical school. Bell’s obvious use of inferences using deduction, logic, and observation became the basis for the character.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and six short story collections totaling 56 stories. Here is the listing featuring Sherlock Holmes (his name has been abbreviated to SH in the listing):

1887 A Study in Scarlet

1892 A Sign of Four

1892 The Adventures of SH

1894 The Memoirs of SH

1902 The House of the Baskervilles

1905 The Return of SH

1915 The Valley of Fear

1917 His Last Bow

1927 The Case-book of SH

1928 The Complete SH Short Stories

Many of these stories have been brought to the screen since the 1930s staring Basil Rathbone, later with Jeremy Britt, and lately with Robert Downey, Jr.

Too much gluten intake will lead to a serious health issue. There is a disease characterized by the rapid damage of intestinal lining within the small intestine because of too much gluten intake. At some point, it is very beneficial for us to know the complications of developing the Celiac disease so that we will be armed with adequate knowledge on the things that we can or we can not do.

Since it is already established that too much gluten intake will lead to the celiac disease, we have to guard ourselves from Gluten .. However, given that you have already developed this digestive disorder, you should also know the possible complications along with the disease.

This article will discuss the possible complications of the Celiac disease if left untreated. This article will be beneficial to any of us who are vigilant with health and be educated with the complications from a simple digestive disorder such as the Celiac disease. A person with the disease is most likely to develop Osteoporosis. Since the person diagnosed with the disorder has difficulty absorbing calcium and Vitamin D, which aids bone development and strength, is will eventually lead to weaker bones and even fracture.

At some point, Osteoporosis is the worse complication if the body will lack huge amount of calcium and remains untreated.Another complication of the disease is infertility or miscarriage. Several hormonal imbalances result from the disease and might lead to sexual disability and miscarriage.Birth defects among babies can also be a manifestation of a mother having the disease since there will be lesser intake of folic acid among mothers.

This can manifest by poor development of the spinal parts resulted from lack of nutrients essential for the development process. If worse comes to worst, although it is a rare scenario, the Celiac disease might lead to intestinal cancer. If the disease remains untreated over time, and there has been an excessive damage within the small intestine, there is a possibility to have cancer cells developed therein. Although this is a rare possibility, we should take this into consideration since most cancer cells are evolving fast.

There are other diseases that might arise side by side with the celiac disease. People who have the disease is most like to have other health issues such as thyroid diseases, high risk of developing Diabetes, specifically the Type 1 Diabetes, Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. These are just some of the common complications for developing Celiac disease. These are just some things that we have to know in order to guard ourselves against too much intake of gluten. If you try to analyze the cause of these common complications, it all boils down to one thing.

That is the inability of the body to absorb nutrients from the food we eat.to avoid developing other complications that might lead to a more serious illness, make sure that we lessen the intake of gluten in the body. Remember that big things start from small beginning. If we make sure that we are getting the right energy from the food we eat, as well as make sure we are guarding ourselves against possible communicable disease, we can make sure that we will be living a healthy and longer life.

Home Health Remedies

Home health remedies made with plants, herbs and natural elements can do a lot for you. Contrary to aggressive chemical drugs their action is mild and beneficial for your body.

I am in danger, you are in danger, the whole humanity is in danger. While our health …. geez … our survival is mortgaged, we keep ignoring that we are colonized by the pharmaceutical industry and our health system. While more and more drugs are being developed, we have never suffered so much from cardiac, neurological, mental and immune support diseases.

We continue to ask our governments to finance the cost of this major degradation of our health condition. We continue to push medical spending through the roof by using and consuming presciption drugs that are toxic to our system and can cause severe side effects. Perhaps, we should not accept to be so dependent of products developed by the pharmaceutical companies and financed by governments. Maybe … we should conquer our independence and recover our health condition through home health remedies.

Let me take you with me and bring you to the …. kitchen. Fruits, vegetables, herbs, plants and other natural elements can form your army of home health remedies and they can help you win the war for enhanced wellness and better health. Don’t wait tomorrow, start today !! Don’t think I am “green” or vegetarian. I just think we should nourish our body with essential nutrients and reduce the damages caused by toxins from drugs, processed food and polluted water. Redefine the balance between the “good” and the “bad”.

Only your will and desire to change the way you treat your body can make a difference. Just think of producers of canned food, alcohol, tobacco and precriptions or over-the-counter drugs. Why are they getting richer while our health is getting poorer ? We are told that processed products are good while they are actually toxic. Consumers are duped and the day they start asking for more and better, non-toxic products will manufacturers react. The same goes for pharmaceutical companies : if we demand more natural home health remedies, only then, will the production of toxic drugs go down and medications proposed become truly beneficial for our health.

While we should start a wave of “new” demands, we already have numerous home health remedies readily available. Combined with a healthy diet and appropriate physical activity they can treat certain conditions such as constipation, toothache, sore throat, hemorrhoids, colds, cough, dry hair, heartburn, etc.

We have put together a collection of free home remedies (see under the left navigation bar). To obtain good results those recipes must be prepared accurately and the remedies taken daily during the period of the treatment. They are mainly composed of herbs and plants that will provide their full healing action.

How to prepare these Home Health Remedies :

– Prepare them in non-metallic heat-resistant pots

– Use the right quantity indicated

– Prepare them one or two nights before the daily intake; let rest in the pot for better results

– Each condition requires a 3-week treatment. Then stop for one week and evaluate the results

– Several home health remedies are proposed for the same condition. You can vary the recipes to reduce the risk of dependence

– Home remedies are not “magical” treatments. Evaluate the results and determine if they are working well for you

– Plants can be stored for up to one year; blends prepared should be kept in a cool place

We realize that preparing home health remedies is not always practical. Time and budget constraints may make it difficult. But they are part of a “package” to improve your health that should also include a balanced diet, exercise and health supplements.

Hearing Loss Treatment – Dealing With the Condition

The kind of hearing loss treatment that you get will be determined by the diagnosis your doctor gives you. The diagnosis will determine the real cause of the problem and this makes it easy for the doctor to recommend a suitable treatment method. To deal with the condition, the doctors usually deal with the underlying cause. This can be a disease like hypothyroidism. Hearing aids also used as a way of amplifying sounds. The aids are not suitable for everyone therefore it is important to have tests carried out before this option is chosen. If the condition is cause by a severe infection, you may be required to get surgery to deal with the problem.

The aids do not work as well as normal ears but there have been major improvements in the type of technology that is applied to make them over the years. They work if you are not suffering from a residual form of this condition. To select as suitable aid, you will have to undergo various tests and try out a variety of them before you settle on specific one. They usually vary in terms of cost and style. There are some that are almost invisible while for others, you may need to get the large ones.

If you are suffering from a profound case of this condition, you may have to get cochlear implants. They are suitable for those who have profound deafness. Cochlear implants are placed under the skin in the inner ears and they make it possible for people to hear a variety of sounds including car horns, doorbells and telephones.

Ear surgery is also recommended as a hearing loss treatment for some people. This is a safe and effective option if it is carried out by a qualified person. There are various forms of surgery that you can get and your doctor will determine the most suitable option based on your particular case.

Once you have received treatment for your condition, you need to make sure you protect your ears. This will prevent a recurrence of the problem. When you are using devices that produce a lot of noise like power saws and lawn mowers, you need to make sure you wear some ear protectors. Stuffing cotton wool into your ears is not effective. When using portable music devices, you should make sure the sound is not too loud.

Camelot Cameras – Breaking the USB Barrier

Today’s Machines Need More Vision

From traffic control to security cameras, today’s machines are utilizing embedded vision to deliver cutting edge performance. Continually striving to produce higher powered devices which perform increasingly difficult functions, today’s machine builders are looking for precise, high-resolution imaging capabilities packaged into compact and energy efficient cameras at a reasonable price.

USB 2.0: So Much to Offer, But is it Enough?

With the introduction of USB 2.0 standards, many camera vendors adopted the technology because it was easy and inexpensive to develop, use and produce. USB 2.0 cameras do not require a frame grabber or special interface hardware on their host computer, and can operate on power provided by the USB interface. Inexpensive and compatible with all commercially available PC boards, USB 2.0 cameras reduce time to market, making it an ideal connectivity option for mass produced machines.

However, in spite of their obvious benefits, USB cameras have been shunned in the vision world as unprofessional; due to bandwidth limitations, low frame rates and susceptibility to host platform activity. As a result they have not seen wide scale adoption in today’s high-performance machine vision applications. Until now…

Imaging Diagnostics: Rethinking USB for Professional Applications

Imaging Diagnostics (ID) presents the first smart USB 2.0 Pro cameras, harnessing all the advantages of USB, while overcoming its shortfalls by adding an embedded DSP. On-camera memory and processing capability enable the use of USB for all but the most demanding high-powered applications, virtually eliminating the need for expensive higher bandwidth interfaces. Professional USB cameras deliver professional performance in a wide range of applications, at a fraction of the cost of high-end cameras.

Compact Design and Low Power Consumption

Imaging Diagnostics cameras consume small amounts of energy, which are easily provided by the USB interface. Battery power is also a viable option for a totally independent imaging solution. Their compact stackable design is extremely versatile and offers a wide array of resolution options from WVGA – 9MP. It also allows easy transition from a plug & play external USB camera implementation to embedded board-level cameras, depending on the needs of the application. The processing capability of ID’s USB cameras is consistent and unaffected by computer OS or software delays, deadlocks etc., and a single computer can easily host several ID cameras.

Working Smarter not Harder

As an example, ID’s smart USB 2.0 Pro cameras can significantly improve facial recognition applications in security systems. The conventional approach would involve a high-resolution camera transmitting several MB of data per frame to the computer. Using a DSP based camera simplifies the task and reduces the cost of the solution. The camera can detect faces employing multiple dynamic fields of view, and tracking their movement across the frame. This enables delivering high sub-frame rates to the host – rates that traditional USB cannot normally provide for full frames.

Other applications include component placement in the production line (fiducial detection), recognition of various types of somatic cells in a micro-biology laboratory, on-the-fly edge detection & histograms, lookup tables and much more.

Arthritis of the Knee – Types and Treatment

Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves symptoms like pain, inflammation, and swelling in is the area where two bones meet.

The knee joint, for example, is where the ends of lower leg bones (the tibia and the fibula) and the thighbone (the femur) meet. Likewise, the hip joint is formed between the thighbone (femoral head) and a concave portion of the pelvis (the acetabulum).

Medically known as the tibiofemoral joint, knee joint is the largest joint in the body and is most frequently affected by arthritis.

This joint disease affects more than 46 million American adults and this number is expected to increase to 67 million by the year 2030. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), about 580,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed every year in the U.S. and the number is growing.

Types
There are three major types of arthritis that may affect the knee joint- Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Post-Traumatic Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA): Also referred to as the “wear and tear” arthritis, Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting 33 million people in the United States.

It is a condition that is caused by the combination of several factors, including overuse of joints, obesity, or aging. Also called ‘degenerative arthritis’, osteoarthritis is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the cartilage covering the bone ends gradually wears away.

It usually causes pain and limited motion, and often occurs in joints that bear weight, such as the knees, hips, feet, and spine. It is most prevalent among middle-aged and older people with active lifestyles.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): It is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can destroy the joint cartilage. It is a systemic, autoimmune condition that causes the body’s immune system to produce substances that attack the body’s soft-tissues and joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age and generally affects both large and small joints in the body as well as the spine. Swelling, pain, and stiffness are often quite pronounced in rheumatoid arthritis, even when the joint is not used. The condition affects approximately 1.3 million Americans, and about 75% of them are women, according to the American College of Rheumatology.

Post-traumatic Arthritis: This form of joint arthritis can develop after any kind of physical injury to the knee in which the bone and cartilage were deteriorated. After the injury, the cartilage separates from the joint and bone and shatter into several fragments which float around freely and cause severe pain and joint stiffness.

A military injury, injury from sports, an accident, a fall, or any other source of physical trauma can damage the joint surface cartilage (osteoarthritis), destructing the mechanism of the joint and making it wear out. This disease may not surface until several years after a fracture, ligament injury, or meniscus tear.

The post-traumatic arthritis symptoms include severe joint pain, swelling, fluid accumulation in the joint, tenderness, and decreased tolerance for walking, sports, climbing stairs and other physical activities which stress the joint. It affects about 5.6 million people in the United States. The risk may be minimized by preventing injuries.

Treatment Options
The treatment for arthritis of the knee starts with nonsurgical measures, including lifestyle modifications; exercise; supportive devices; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines; heat or ice treatments and elastic bandages.

But when arthritis reaches to a point where nonsurgical treatments have failed to relieve pain and other symptoms, surgical treatment will be considered.

There are a number of surgical treatments that can offer lasting relief. Cleaning out or repairing torn cartilage and reconstructing or replacing the worn out joint surfaces are the common surgical treatments for arthritis in the joint.

Of Drugs and Youth

Today, the problem of drug abuse among the youth has assumed a greater significance and heightened concern in various socio-cultural and economic strata. Though no accurate figures are available to measure the actual extent of the problem, drug addicts reporting to counseling in the country points out that the problem has spread among various age groups, and much among youths aged 16 to 25 years.

The age group in which a youth is, signifies the transformation of an adolescent to a young person, which usually is accompanied with the trials and tribulations of a ‘child’ in becoming a ‘grown-up’. A bundle of exuberant but undirected energy, he derives pleasure in taking risks and experimenting with new things. He craves to taste the ‘forbidden fruits’ in his quest for attaining recognition and status amongst his peers. Such a behaviour often brings him in open or concealed conflict with his parents and ‘parent figures’ which leads to the much discussed ‘conflict of generations’ and ‘generation gap’. The situation has been further complicated due to the fast paced social transformation brought in the society by rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and rural-urban migration. It has eroded the traditional, informal, social control mechanisms and has even brought in changes in the structure of the family, from joint to nuclear, or at best an extended family.

The ‘media explosion’ has shrunken the world, especially for the youth, and they are now more aware of things around. This has also raised their level of aspiration and ambition. With materialism, consumerism and individualism gaining ascendancy, modern youth is drifting away from his traditional roots and finds it difficult to cope with ever increasing social pressures. Further, the increasing economic pressures compel more and more parents to take full time employment leaving a child, more so a youth, alone in the house or in the company of friends. With no adequate programmes available to keep them busy, they become easy prey to anti-social activities including drug-abuse.

There may be various reasons for a youth to take to drug abuse, from just curiosity and a tendency to experiment with. It may be an expression of his revolt against established authority, a way of gaining recognition in his group or he may just not be able to say ‘NO’, when offered.

Therefore awareness creation or preventive education programme for youth is an imperative. In build up immunity amongst them, would promote self-respect and determination, provide experiences which encourage self-respect and sense of dignity, enhances personal and social skill which are necessary for functioning in a rapidly transforming society and provide for professional skills.

What is more important is that the leisure time activities of both student and non-student youth are so organised that they provide for healthy recreation and constructive work habits. As is evident, a youth feels more at home within his age-group. Therefore, to reach them, it is but natural to take the help of more active groups among them.

In Bangladesh, a strong emphasis has been placed on awareness building against drug-abuse among youth as they are considered to be the most precious asset for human resource development. Financial and technical assistance is provided by the government and NGO’s to help them undertake activities such as socio cultural programmes. Experience has shown such programmes have a salutary impact, if backed by a good follow-up programme.

It has also been realised that youth power can be harnessed not only from preventing youths from the malady of addiction but also by improving the environment they live in. One such example is the “Rainy Day” concert organised by Prothom Alo to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking. Some 15000 youths saying ‘No to drugs’ vowed to launch a nationwide movement against drug.

I take my hats off to Anusheh who had the gut to narrate her once drug addicted life. Anusheh, you can be a good ambassador to help the drug addicts return to their original track. Such activities/programmes help to identify addicts in their own peer groups. Dare devils as the youth are, they prove to be an asset in reaching rather inaccessible areas of the community, such as, pockets of addiction.

Many a time, due to their connection with traffickers, pushers and pedlars, it becomes difficult to impress upon addicts to leave their habit. It is here that the youths, voluntary organisations have not only been able to create awareness but also have been able to muster support for combating trafficking, pushing and peddling drug.

Take the flu or common cold for example. What do you do to get rid of these sicknesses quickly? Are you all for modern-day science or do you prefer alternative herbal medicines? You may want to investigate deeper before drawing any conclusions.

Can you think of an alternative herbal medicine that works well for you? I know I can. You see, I tend to get sore in the forearm area. This is a result of excessive typing. Certainly this could result in dreadful problems such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, I will not allow such a thing to happen. Now, I could use an oral medicine like Ibuprofen to deal with the tenderness. Sure, it might help a little. But, I want something that is going to treat and heal my forearms. So, I began searching for an alternative herbal medicine. Eventually I found a German alternative medicine. It is called Arnica gel. I at once liked the fact that it's all natural. Furthermore, it has been proven to heal joints and tendons. I knew it would be ideal for my aches and pains. After just one use, I was amazed at the effectiveness of this herbal medicine. I would imagine such a topical cream would make a lot of money. Since then I rub Arnica cream on my forearms each night before going to bed, and when I get up in the morning, my arms are cured and free of discomfort. It's wonderful stuff.

So, can you think of a good reason why a person should opt for an alternative herbal medicine over one manufactured by a pharmaceutical company? How about this. We are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of these man-made drugs. It's difficult to ignore all the bad press. I certainly do not want my liver damaged by some artificial drug. Why not consider using the modern alternative herbal medicine that is readily available these days.

A little research on the Internet uncovers many testimonials from people praising the efficacy of arnica gel. According to one Amazon customer it reduces inflammation from muscle and joint strain, bruises and arthritis. This user also found it very effective in preventing bruising if applied straight after the injury or bump occurs. Existing bruises faded fast when arnica gel was applied to them.

Vitamin D – The Sunny Vitamin

Vitamin D is important for your body because it regulates the amount of calcium in your blood and makes sure you maintain proper levels in your system. It does this by assisting in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food in the intestines. Vitamin D is also essential for keeping your bones and immune system healthy and strong. People who get a lot of Vitamin D from their food and supplements are less likely to get colon cancer and skin disease. Vitamin D can also help a person’s hearing by repairing the tiny bones located in the ear.

Your body makes Vitamin D when sunlight shines directly on your skin. The ultraviolet light in sunshine converts, through a photochemical reaction, the cholesterol that is found directly under your skin into Vitamin D3, which then travels to your kidneys and is converted into an active form of the vitamin call calcitriol.

Vitamin D was discovered in the 1930s when it was discovered that swallowing a spoonful of cod-liver oil a day prevented rickets. Kids who didn’t get enough Vitamin D in their diets developed this, disease which prevented their bones from growing and hardening properly. There is very little incidents of rickets today because the milk and the dairy products we consume are fortified with Vitamin D, which is the best source for Vitamin D. Other food sources rich in Vitamin D are fish liver oils, whole eggs, beef liver, and fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, tuna, catfish, and eel.

The daily value for Vitamin D is 400 IUs a day. Most people only, though, only get approximately a quarter of this amount through their diets. Thus, Vitamin D supplementation through a multi-vitamin may be advisable. Since Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, though, care should be taken not to consume excessive amounts (i.e., more than 2,000 UI per day). Excessive Vitamin D can increase the chance that a person will suffer a heart attack or kidney stones.

Many calcium supplements on the market include Vitamin D, so that is typically a good way to get enough in your body. If you are wondering what the right amount of supplementation is right for you, you should consult your health care professional, who can help take your particular health situation into account. In particular, recent studies have shown that adolescents low in Vitamin D have increased risk of high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. A Case Report Form (or CRF) is a document or electronic questionnaire used specifically in clinical trial research. The CRF design is a medical test method that is paramount to a successful clinical trial.

The method identifies the company, record points, system, pattern, motive(s), and technological explanation of the projected test. Characteristics of the test are additionally furnished in other reports referenced inside method for instance a CRF design or an Investigator’s Leaflet.

The process has a real examination approach meant for undertaking the medical test, not just to ensure security and also fitness of the test topics, but additionally to deliver a precise arrangement for test carried out by researchers at many places (in a “multicenter” test) to do the examination by just the same manner. This harmonization permits facts to be merged jointly as all researchers (known as “sites”) were functioning closely as partners. The method utilized for the CRF design additionally provides the research managers (normally a contract research organization or CRO) and also the site group of medical center managers, medical doctors, and also nurses a standard guide for site tasks throughout the test.

The formatting and also material of the CRF design meant for scientific test processes subsidized by health care product, biotechnology, or drug organizations inside the USA, EU, or Japan has already been standardized to adhere to Fine Medical Process advice (published by the International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use – ICH). Regulating government bodies in Canada and also Australia also abide by ICH regulations.

Relevant regulating gurus carefully monitor scientific tests. Almost all tests which involve a healing or health care treatment on individuals should be permitted by a monitoring morals committee prior to authorization is issued to execute the test. The area morals committee has foresight on how it will monitor non interventional scientific tests (observational analyses or the ones utilizing previously accumulated details). In the United States of America, this institution is referred to as the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Nearly all IRBs are operating in the nearby investigator’s medical center or organization, however, many sponsors permit using a main (private / for earnings) IRB for researchers that operate at small bodies.

To be lawful, scientists have to receive the complete and also notified authorization of engaging human beings. (One of many IRB’s major works is making sure that probable people are properly educated concerning the medical test.) Should the sufferer cannot agree for him/herself, experts could get agreement from the person’s lawfully accepted rep. Inside California, the state government has prioritized the people who might work as the lawfully approved agent.

Alternatives to Traditional Medicine

Although I appreciate the value that traditional medicine brings to health care, I am passionate about a life-changing philosophy that speaks to the core of man and has been proven through the ages. This philosophy differentiates the kind of medicine I practice from that which most physicians practice.

The body is a self-healing organism. It needs the nutrients and building blocks in order to perform its designed functions. There are many interferences with this process. When toxic substances are removed, then your body can use the nutrients to perform its maximal function. Allopathic medicine looks at your body as a mechanical machine that breaks down, so the physician must “fix it.”

Here are some more challenging philosophical comments to ponder.

What I’ve done is take the conventional (also called allopathic) medicine philosophies and compare them side by side with alternative medicine (also called integrative, complementary, or preventive medicine).

Actually, no name is fully descriptive for either of the disciplines. Conventional could just as easily refer to medicine that was practiced in the past, now called complementary or alternative medicine. And alternative medicine could just as easily refer to the surgical/drug alternatives that you resort to when your homemade remedies do not help.

Alternative Medicine

The body is self-healing – but only if nutrients and building blocks are present and toxic substances are removed.

Treat cause.

Work with the physiology of the body.

Build the terrain (cells) and strengthen the natural defenses of the body.

Based on the science of biochemistry and physiology.

The body has an energy force, chi, spirit, soul that is separate from the physical body, from the physical body, responding to Einsteinian physics.

Use whole, organic products or bioidentical products.

Emphasize safer herbs, minerals, vitamins.

Different view of same disease.

Use safer procedure for same disease.

Use non-invasive testing whenever possible.

Treat “untreatable” diseases.

Conventional Medicine

The body is a mechanical machine that breaks down, so the physician must “fix” it.

Treat symptoms.

Control the physiology of the body.

Kill the enemy.

Heavily influenced by pharmaceuticals, driven by consensus, tradition, policy, insurance, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies.

The body is a biochemical, physical entity with pulleys, organs, and vessels that follow Newton’s laws of physics.

Use synthetically changed, patentable products.

Emphasize medications.

It’s not too hard to determine my bias, is it? However, it’s important to note that I practiced conventional, allopathic medicine for more than 20 years before realizing that there were some significant factors in alternative medicine that I was overlooking, all in the name of staying “within the box.” Current research tends to show that alternative medical approaches work. From my clinical experience, I see that to be true on a daily basis.

For example, if you come into a conventional medical doctor’s practice, complaining of migraines headaches, conventional medicine would send you on your way with a prescription, or maybe several prescriptions. Try one, see if it works, get back with me in a few weeks. As an alternative, integrative, or complementary physician, my first questions are: “What factors trigger the migraine? What is your current emotional situation? What stresses are you dealing with right now, or what have you dealt with in the past?” I get a solid history, and then we just crank out the reasons and causes for migraines. I base my treatment on the triggering causes, thus making my treatment one that deals with the core issues rather than the end organ symptoms.

Let’s insert one more thing onto the alternative side of the chart: balance. I’m not putting it in the chart, because it’s something I want you to think about and rediscover for yourself. It’s good to take good things into your body, but too much of a good thing can be very harmful. Too little of a good thing is also harmful. Too much of one thing may cause an imbalance that may be just as harmful as an excess or deficiency. For instance, all the vitamins are very helpful, but to take one in isolation, especially at high doses, may cause an imbalance in your body and be detrimental to it. Others have used the term “moderation” to describe keeping a balance.

Balance applies to everyone, whether you embrace alternative medicine or conventional medicine. Balance will lead you ultimately to discovering what your body is telling you it needs to be dynamically healthy. Balance will put you in the position where you are able to hear your body, understand it, apply what you learn, and feel the difference.

To your dynamic health and energy! (And keep your balance!) Warm Regards, Dr. Stan Gardner
