All About Sleep Apnea & How it Affects You

Sleep apnea can be a dangerous and scary problem. The scariest thing about it is that you are not conscious for most of it. Anybody should know about the causes, symptoms, and treatments for sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is episodes of not breathing while you are sleeping. These episodes usually last up to 10 seconds and can happen over and over every hour of the night.

Causes

Sleep apnea can be caused for different reason in different people and ages. If you have blocked airways, it can cause this problem. If you have constant problems with drainage from mucus in the throat or nose, this could be the culprit as well while you are sleeping.

Tonsils and adenoids can be the problem in adults and in children as well.

Being overweight can also increase the risk of developing sleep apnea.

Symptoms

  • feeling overly tired during the day
  • headaches; usually immediately after waking up
  • snoring; tossing and turning (if you sleep with someone, they may notice these things)
  • stop breathing during sleep (they may notice this too)

Treatments

There are a couple treatments available, but it can be hard to figure out exactly what it right for you. You may be advised to wear strips to open airways at night, get tonsils or adenoids removed, or lose weight. It is a subject that should absolutely be brought up to your doctor because of the intensity that it can reach.

If you are worried that you may have this condition, you may want to ask your sleeping partner about your habits while you are sleeping and pay close attention to what you feel like in the morning as you wake up and through the day.

Natural Remedies For Vaginal Atrophy – Can You Really Fix This Disorder Yourself?

Do natural remedies for vaginal atrophy exist? If your doctor has told you that you suffer from this condition, you may be wondering what your options are. Do you have to start on hormonal replacement? Or is there a natural way to restore vaginal tissue?

First of all, you need to understand what causes this disorder. Only then can you know how to treat it.

The Cause

This condition occurs where the lining of the vagina starts to thin. Over time, this progresses to be a serious condition. It's caused by a lack of estrogen, generally thought about by menopause. Early symptoms include vaginal dryness. As the disorder progresses, sex becomes increasingly painful and may even cause bleeding. But to get a diagnosis, you do need to see your doctor.

What You Need To Do To Treat It

To treat it, it makes sense to replace estrogen in your body. That is why most doctors will prescribe low-dose estrogen therapy to help you. However, this treatment plan is not without side effects. Plus, there is the risk of cancer from the extra estrogen.

How Estrogen Helps

Fortunately, many women have found relief using natural sources of estrogen. Many plants contained what is known as phytoestrogen. You find the highest concentration of this in soy and other legumes. However, most of these foods do not contain enough to effectively reverse vaginal atrophy.

Looking To Natural Remedies to Treat It

But other natural remedies for vaginal atrophy include supplements that contain a higher concentration of this phytoestrogen. These usually also contain a mixture of vitamins and minerals that help keep you in optimum health. Plus, many women have found them to be effective at treating vaginal atrophy.

How to Treat Glaucoma – Some Tips You Need to Know

Glaucoma is the No 2 cause of blindness worldwide after cataracts. Glaucoma attacks the optical nerve and causes chronic and progressive deterioration. The disease is diagnosed by testing eye pressure. While blindness caused by cataracts is generally curable, this is not the case with glaucoma. That is why it is very important to know how to treat Glaucoma.

People who have glaucoma have to undergo lifetime treatment to avoid blindness. Of course, this long treatment will cost a lot of money. Many people can not afford this kind of treatment.

The vision of people with glaucoma usually deteriorates over time due to disruption to the optic nerve as indicated by elevated eye pressure. Glaucoma attacks people 40 years old and over. The disease can be inherited from parents or grandparents.

Using steroids, such as certain eye drops, asthma inhalers and rheumatism or arthritis medicines, can make a person susceptible to the disease. Those with severe cases of myopia and hypermethropia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension or migraine can also develop glaucoma.

To treat Glaucoma can be done through many kinds of ways. Below are some tips that you may practice for Glaucoma treatment.

1. Eye Screening

Regular eye screening is recommended. Prevention is better than cure. Glaucoma screening can prevent blindness.

2. Avoid Stress

Stress is also another cause of Glaucoma. When people are diagnosed they have Glaucoma they feel stressed. Stress just makes Glaucoma worse. Stress also can cause eye strain on the eyes. Avoid stress if you want to cure Glaucoma since stress is useless.

3. Eyesight Vitamins

In fact, you can not find cures for Glaucoma. However, there are a lot of treatments for Glaucoma. Some of those treatments are natural. One of natural ways to treat Glaucoma is called vitamin therapy. Vitamin therapy is a kind of therapy which is intended at restoring eyesight by consuming enough eyesight vitamins. The main vitamins for eyesight consist of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

4. Start Healthy Life

Vitamins and nutrients are very important for your eyes. A balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can restore your eyesight. Regular exercise is also necessary. In other words, healthy eyesight starts from healthy life.

Effects of Myopia on Our Lives

Some years ago, my friends and I were sitting in a lecture when out of the blues one of them noticed how much I was squinting just to read the PowerPoint slides. I brushed her comment as thought thoughtlessly and carried on paying attention to the lecture. It was not until recently that I got into a car accident which opened my eyes to this visual defect I possessed called 'Myopia'. Sure, I sat the driving test four years ago which was accompanied by a vision examination and I past with flying colors, yet many people like myself are unaware that vision can change quickly over a short period of time. This article is simply written to define myopia and explain how it arises. Hope you enjoy and understand it

What is Myopia? Myopia is simply defined as' short sightedness or 'near sightedness'. As the term implies, people are not able to see distant objects because the images appear blurry and fuzzy so their eyes are only capable of seeing objects up close. The retina is a structure of the eye which is analogous to a movie screen since everything we perceive in the real world falls on this anatomy. Anything which falls in front or behind the retina (movie screen) will not be in focus therefore in the case of myopia; parallel light rays from distant objects come to focus in front of the retina producing blurred images. To compensate for this condition wearing negative power contact lenses or glasses allow people to reach '20/20 acuity' or 'normal vision'.

How does myopia arise? Myopia arises from a mismatched between the refractive power of the eye and its axial length or its abnormal cornea curvature. The length of the eyeball is too long for its eye's power or the cornea (the transparent outermost structure of the eye) is too flat and has lost its correct curvature. It has been heavily debated for years whether its cause is of 'nature or nurture'. Strong supporting evidence show that myopia can have a genetic constituent or occur as a result of environmental influences. If short-sightedness arises during infancy or preschool years of a child then this proves that there is a strong heretitary component but if myopia presents itself later on in life then there is a greater possibility of an environment influence on this condition since the greater opportunity for preventive measure.

Health is Wealth – Do You Agree?

I agree whole-heartedly with the saying “Health Is Wealth”. If a person is not healthy then he or she will find it very difficult or even impossible to enjoy life, even though he or she may be very rich.

If I am asked to choose one from two of the following things, which will I prefer: health without wealth, or, wealth without health? Without hesitation I will choose the former. There is no doubt.

Wealth is generally associated with how much money a person has, that is, how rich he is. An uncle of mine is very rich. He has just about everything anyone can hope for, and some things no one dares to hope for. That is how rich he is. He lives in a huge mansion guarded by huge dobermans and sophisticated burglar alarms. He has expensive cars, furniture, paintings and other rich man’s toys. Well, he has everything except good health.

Everywhere he goes he carries with him a bag of medicine. He has to take pills everyday for his weak heart, diabetes and hypertension. He is about sixty years old and has spent his life accumulating wealth. Without doubt he has succeeded in becoming very rich. However he has also succeeded in becoming very unhealthy too. He laments about his lack of health and says that how he wished that he was young and healthy again. Unfortunately, he cannot regain his health again.

This example of wealth without health is not what I want to follow. It is ridiculous to have so much material wealth but being unable to enjoy it. What is the use of money when one has to take so much medicine everyday just to stay alive? How can one enjoy life when one’s body is weakened by disease and pain? No wonder my uncle laments so.

Health without wealth is far better. That is what I have now. I do not have to worry even a bit about what I can eat or do. I eat and do what I like because my body is healthy. Of course I do not abuse it by taking drugs or overexerting myself. I take good care of my body. In that way I stay healthy.

With health I can go about my work with joy. If I become rich, then that is fine. Then again, I may lose my riches, but that is all right too. I can always do the things I enjoy whether I am rich or not. I can play games, swim in the sea, climb hills, eat delicious fruits and appreciate the things of this beautiful Earth. This is indeed wealth – to be healthy and joyous.

The Infusion Pump Is Easily Taken for Granted

Let’s take a moment to sing the praises of the infusion pump. Yes, yes, it does seem like a rather mundane topic to get excited about. But consider our ability to feed, hydrate, and deliver medicines and solutions to the human body intravenously. Ponder for a second how great a step forward it was for mankind to develop the means to inject life-giving, life-preserving fluids into the blood stream.

A Brief History

The use of a syringe was first recorded during the time of the Romans by a gentleman named Celsus. Celsus wrote on many different subjects, but one of his works was a medical manual in which he tells of the use of a “piston” syringe to treat medical “complications.”

In 1650, French physicist Blaise Pascal invented the first “modern” syringe. He had been studying the principles surrounding the transmission of fluids using pressure, and from this came the syringe and a host of other inventions including hydraulics.

Intravenous (IV) infusion was first recorded as being attempted in the late 1400’s. But it wasn’t until the 1650’s where physicist Robert Boyle and architect Christopher Wren first started giving intravenous injections to animals. They had been experimenting with transfusions and IV infusion along with several other prominent physicians for a few years. One of those physicians was Richard Lower, who is said to have performed the first successful blood transfusion in around 1667. But Christopher Wren gets the historical credit for creating the first working IV infusion device in the late 1650’s.

Over the next 150 years-or-so, the process of IV infusion was slowly refined. Soon after the first transfusions were performed, they were banned in England, France, and Italy due to a number of deaths that resulted from them.

There were many failures with this early medical equipment, yet many discoveries and inventions were born out of those failures; the science of bacteriology, for instance. Better sterilization techniques and smaller, more effective needles were also generated during this period.

In the early 1830’s, Dr. Thomas Latta administered saline solution intravenously to Cholera patients on a large scale. He is said to have, for the most part, pioneered the process. Things only progressed from there, especially during the World War years which, out of necessity, spurred many advances in the delivery of blood and medicine through intravenous infusion. Needles and tubing were modified, and in the 1950’s, bottles were replaced with plastic bags.

The Infusion Pump

Another development in IV infusion technology was beginning to bubble up in the 1950’s. Interest was growing in the development of an “automated” bedside IV infusion system, mainly for use in operating rooms and intensive care units. The goal was to produce a machine or “pump” system that would automatically regulate the timing, volume, and dosage of medicines, fluids, and blood products administered to a patient.

A system like this would be much more efficient. It would save countless man-hours where nurses and doctors would not have to continuously give shots, personally administer IV’s, or do as much monitoring, and it would also allow great flexibility in the amount or volume of substance being delivered. These were just a few of the many advantages that the infusion pump offered.

The first infusion pump was developed and built by SigmaMotor, Inc., and the pumps started shipping in 1961. Due to a few early snags, the pumps were redesigned several times. But SigmaMotor (later just Sigma) built and sold thousands of units in the early-to-mid ’60’s, and a giant leap in medical technology and overall healthcare had begun to take hold.

The infusion pump has positively affected humanity in immeasurable ways. Countless medical supply companies, such as Alaris (Medsystem III), Baxter, Curlin, Hospira, and Smiths Medical, just to name a handful, carry IV supplies and a wide variety of infusion pumps, both new and refurbished.

Today, this mechanical “medical miracle” is a standard piece of equipment. Of course there have been many “offshoots” and variations to the infusion pump; the latest being portable and disposable devices… and the evolution continues.

What is a Puncture Wound and How to Heal it Fast

First, let's look at what is a puncture wound. A puncture wound is any wound that breaks your skin by something that is sharp, thin and pointed. Examples of instruments that are the cause of puncture wounds include:

  • pins, needles, including vaccinations
  • teeth, so bites especially of insects
  • thorns
  • slivers of broken glass

This morning, I was weaving the garden and I suddenly felt a sharp pain in the heel of my hand. I saw a tiny sliver of what looked like the hair of a plant. But the pain was sharp and quite intense. Not enough to make me take any immediate action, but enough to wonder what it was. It certainly was not the hair from a plant.

About an hour later, the pain was getting worse, but now the area was red and looked as if it was spreading up my arm.

Time for action!

I took a dose of the homeopathic medicine Ledum. Nothing really happened for about 15 minutes. Then I forgot about it. It was only when a patient was regaling her successes from using her homeopathic first aid kit, that I suddenly remembered.

There was no sign that it had ever happened. No pain, no redness.

Had I left it longer, more doses than just one, would have been needed. Nipping things in the bud is always a good way to go. This is possible if you keep a homeopathic first aid kit handy at all times. You never know when you'll need it.

When using homeopathic medicines successfully, it is very helpful, although not essential, to know what the cause of the problem was. By knowing what a puncture wound is, you can then select the best medicine for it. Ledum is the number one homeopathic medicine for dealing effectively with recent puncture wounds.

The Benefits of Blending Ginkgo and Gotu Kola

Each of these two world renowned herbs are often use together with enhanced effects as a powerful brain tonic. Ginkgo Biloba benefits include circulatory and memory augmentation which works perfectly alongside Gotu kola benefits as a brain booster and nervous system relaxer. Certain medicinal extracts are now available that combined the two healing properties of both these amazing herbs.

Benefits of Ginkgo and Gotu Kola Herbal Extracts:

Increases blood flow to the brain

Promotes longevity and anti-aging effects

Protects the brain against dangerous free radicals

Advances capillary utilization

Gives the brain the ability to handle stress more effectively

The uses Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) have been used as medicine since prehistoric times in India and in the science of Ayurveda. It was used both internally and externally in Indonesia, with its known effects to heal wounds and relieve leprosy.

Ginkgo Biloba can be traced back to ancient China and the traditions of using ginkgo to treat the brain and alleviate symptoms of coughs and allergies. Standardized extracts are still used widely today in medical establishments in France and Germany.

In China it is one of the reported “miracle elixirs of life”. Gotu kola extract holds the reputation as an herb that promotes longevity. This stems from the report of Chinese herbalist Li Ching Yun, who lived to be 256 years of age. Li Ching Yun’s longevity was supposedly a result of his regular use of an herbal mixture chiefly composed of Gotu kola.

The brain requires basically two things to provide energy: glucose and oxygen. A Ginkgo Biloba extract is extraordinary in its ability to prevent metabolic disturbances in the experimental models of insufficient blood supply to the brain. This is achieved by an enhanced utilization of oxygen and an increased cellular uptake of glucose, thus restoring energy production.

Gotu kola or is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Asian and Indonesia. This viney, creeping plant flourishes in and around water, although it grows best in damp, swampy areas. Gotu kola is often found growing along stone walls or other rocky, sunny areas at elevations of approximately 2,000 feet in regions of the world.

It is also beneficial to:

Cellulite

Wound healing

Mental function

Varicose veins

Scleroderma

The primary active constituents of Gotu kola are known to be the triterpenoid compounds. Its extracts were incorporated into the Indian pharmacopeia, where it was recommended for treatment of various skin conditions such as lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema and psoriasis. It was also used to treat diarrhea, fever, amenorrhea, and diseases of the female urinary tract.

Why They Are Good For The Brain

A significant increase in the mental abilities in a number of case studies using Gotu kola benefits has been reported. It’s triterpenes have demonstrated mild tranquilizing, anti-stress and anti-anxiety action via enhancement of cholinergic mechanisms. Presumably this mechanism is responsible for the enhancement of mental function as well.

Ginkgo Biloba benefits the brain include membrane stabilization, free radical scavenging, and antioxidant advantages. It is a most effective inhibitor of lipid per-oxidation of cellular membranes. This results in the health enhancement of brain and nerve cells to function optimally.

Both Ginkgo Biloba extract and Gotu kola are well tolerated when taken orally. They work well together and seem to promote and increase the healing properties of one another.

Possible Side Effects of Slimming Tea

Slimming tea is an herbal product that includes approximately 25% tea. Perhaps, the manufacturers and marketers are trying to latch onto the benefits of other pure teas by creating a beverage that is said to stimulate weight loss.

However, these herbal concoctions are filled with laxatives. There is a time in everyone’s life when a laxative may be warranted. Use for weight loss is not one of those times. Among the possible side effects of the use or abuse of these brewed beverages are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • GI Tract problems
  • And possibly death from extended abuse by those who suffer from anorexia or bulimia
  • These side effects may not manifest with occasional use or the first use. However, for some who have “delicate” systems, diarrhea and stomach cramps may occur after the first cup. It must be noted that there are times when the product is useful, especially if one is suffering from constipation. However, it must be further noted that extended use of laxatives in any form will make the body become dependent on them to stimulate the bodily functions. The end result may be that the very product one uses to override constipation may create a never ending cycle on dependency and necessity.

It goes without saying that pregnant women should not use the products during the nine months of pregnancy as there could be disastrous results.

Generally, nausea and vomiting follow more than the occasional use. Fainting and dehydration go hand in hand. Often these side effects follow repeated daily use. While death is not likely to be attributed to drinking a laxative filled product, it is understandable that extended use followed by vomiting, dehydration and fainting could eventually lead to death.

Of particular note, many anorexia nervosa sufferers and those who experience bulimia are more likely to suffer the dire consequences of taking, or drinking, these slimming products daily. The psychological dependence can lead to physical dependence and to death. While no one is suggesting that any of the products are directly responsible for death, the abuse of any weight loss product by someone with a weight related disease should be a consideration.

Perhaps, there is a place for these products in the cupboard, especially for those times when a laxative is needed. However, before using these products as a weight loss tool, one should be fully aware of the consequences that can arise from regular use or abuse.

    Does Oregano Oil Really Work?

People who are not familiar with the healing benefits of pure oregano oil are often in disbelief when told about this all natural healing product. That fact is pure oil of oregano has countless healing properties we can’t even begin to imagine. Take for example my good friend Leo, which by the way is not his real name but indeed a real person with all assurance being true. Leo was able to treat his tetanus infection with oregano overnight.

The story starts with Leo working one weekend at his cousin’s carpet installing company. He often worked with his cousin on weekends to earn extra cash. One weekend in particular Leo had been with his cousin in the basement of an old friend, pulling the old carpet to install new flooring.

Unfortunately the carpeting was so old and moldy that the nails holding the carpet strips were rusty and filled with mold as well. As the story goes, Leo, unaware that a piece of nail strip was still attached to the carpet, pulled the carpet and punctured his hand with the rusty nail. Later that night, Leo recanted that he started to feel numbness in his arm and could see his skin turning purple. Surely there was something wrong, he thought to himself. So Leo, not having any insurance and fully aware of the healing properties of oregano, commenced to treat himself by applying a few drops of oil directly on his wound.

As he explains, it was like a shot of fire running through his veins. He later explains that he was able to see his arm turning red with a burning sensation rushing up his arm. It burned like heck, but for sure the oregano oil was at work. The following day Leo’s arm was totally back to normal with the two small punctures being the only sign of a once infected arm.

Leo is indeed an extremist when it comes to his use of herbal products. I don’t recommend trying what he did. However the fact is it worked great for him under extreme circumstance. If you plan on using pure oregano oil, be sure to consider the following very important facts:

    • Know the level of purity and potency of the oil. There are several brands available on the market. You should know that the level of potency is not the same for each. Ask your merchant if the oil contains any binders or fillers.
    • Have a full understanding of the proper dosage to take for your particular ailment, and how to apply or consume each dosage.
    • Understand the specific healing benefits.

Individuals unfamiliar with the healing powers of pure oregano oil often listen to Leo’s story with disbelief, however, the story is true and his experience may help you treat yourself with the powerful healing properties of oil of oregano.

The Secret to Chicken Pox Relief

So, there I was with two children covered in chicken pox. I felt grateful that they were both getting them over with while they were young, and nervous about my ability to treat them effectively on my own, without over the counter remedies.

This was definitely the most serious illness I had yet faced as an herbalist parent. How I wished for a chicken pox treatment page like the one I'm about to write, a page from another parent saying here's what I did, and it worked.

Luckily, my herbalist husband was on hand to remind me to trust the plants and to use the plants we know.

Chicken pox, we discovered, is a herpes related virus, so we chose St. Louis. John's Wort, as our primary healer, since we know it to be effective against herpes.

We brewed up teas for their baths – concoctions of St. John's Wort (dried leaves, stem and flowers), dried burdock root, and dried licorice root.

To make the concoctions we would put one large handful of each into a gallon of boiling water and simmer for 20 minutes.

Then strain out the herbs and add the tea to the bath water.

I would also fill a thin cloth bag with oats, calendula flowers and baking soda and put that into the bath. The kids would squeeze the oat milk onto their skin and even rub the bags over the irritated areas. These baths did wonders to relate the itching and calm the children. What a great herbal chicken pox treatment!

We also had the children drink the St. Paul. John's Wort, burdock and licorice tea as much as possible while they were broken out.

Still, we had times when the itching and burning was very uncomfortable and made sleeping especially difficult.

At these times, St. Johns Wort oil offered some relief. We did not come up with the perfect anti-itch formula, but have since learned that tea tree oil can provide amazing relief, and that chickweed poultices are effective for cooling and calming the itch.

We did try a mixture of baking soda and water and found it not only ineffective, but irritating to the children. This is actually a popular chicken pox treatment for some reason.

Hailey had the easier time with the chicken pox. At one year old, she did not get nearly as many as her six year old brother, and for the first few days was happy and playful and still practicing her walking.

She did get quite a few pox on her butt and genital area, probably because of the heat from her diaper. Then, just about the time that Rowan was beginning to feel better, Hailey got a fever and we not one of the pox on her leg where her diaper wrap was rubbing was very red and swollen.

We took her diaper off and began using poultices of calendula flowers and plantain leaves (crushed in a mortar and pestle with a little bit of water) directly on the pox. The swelling and redness went away by the end of the day and her fever was gone by morning.

We then used these poultices (attached with gauze and tape) on any of the more angry looking pox until they were cured.

Another worrisome occurrence that happened for us, was that Rowan sat up in bed near the middle of the night with his eyes wide open, yelling nonsense. It was a very unsettling experience for me as a mother, but after doing some research on the web, I found that it is not uncommon during chicken pox. I simply calmed him and he went back to sleep and woke a few minutes later with no memory of the episode.

The worst of the virus had passed within a period of about four days, and they were intense days for me. My suggestion to you is that if you call on whatever support system you have during this illness.

Find ways to get rest yourself, drink nourishing, calming teas, and rest assured that the remedies on this page worked for our family and that your children will get better given love and herbal nourishment. We hope our herbal chicken pox treatment works for you.
