Cerebral Palsy Therapy

There are many forms of physical Cerebral Palsy therapy that can help reduce the disabilities associated with this disorder. Each person with Cerebral Palsy will often need a specialized kind of therapy.

The Maribelle exercise assist system, otherwise known as the MEAS is one option that people with Cerebral Palsy may be interested in and has had very beneficial results.

The MEAS is an exerciser that is suspended from the ceiling with a body support. This allows people that have little or no use of their legs to actually be put in an upright position (supported standing), or a sitting position where they can move or move with assistance. For example, swinging.

The benefits of this are many, including much enjoyment for the user just from being in an upright position, or from the swinging and other possible movements. Remarkably, the movements in the MEAS result in LESS spasticity! 3 to 5 minutes of gentle bouncing, followed by swinging, invariably will relax tight elbow joints and clenched hands will open up. The Neurophysiological reasons for this change have been well documented in research studies about using rebounders.

Progressive treatment goals, which have been achieved in varying degrees by the regular use of the MEAS in an eight week or longer program include:

1. Eye contact, tracking, eye-hand coordination, focusing, dramatically improved vision.

2. Increased attention span, improved learning skills.

3. Social awareness, interaction with peers, self confidence

4. Vocalization, improved speech.

5. Independent purposeful movement, muscle development.

6. Head Control, trunk balance, independent righting.

7. Improved circulation, improved bowel function.

8. Reduction in flexon spasticity, relaxed open hands.

9. Reduction in extension spasticity, less startle reflex

10. Release of frustration, improved morale, enjoyment.

11. Easier to feed after exercise, better appetite

12. Self feeding, finger foods, spoon, fork.

13. Desensitization of skin areas, particularly the soles of the feet, starting by letting the user splash their feet in warm water, shaving foam etc.

14. Crawling, independent mobility, knee walking, running.

15. Reduction of Athetoid movements allowing the person to control their electric wheel chair independently after exercising in MEAS

Therapists have reported that clients who were fearful when they were placed in a hammock are much less afraid of doing Sensory Integration and Vestibular Stimulation techniques using MEAS.

Meas is used for

* Sensory integration

* Vestibular stimulation

* Gait training

* Desensitizing soles of feet

* Occupying a child while tube feeding to distract the child from yanking tubes

* Encouraging weight bearing in hypertonic children

* Allows wheelchair-bound adults to move in upright position.

* Early recovery periods after injuries

Besides Cerebral Palsy, the Maribelle exercise assist system will also be of benefit for people with

* Low muscle tone

* Poor balance

* Spastic cerebral palsy (CP)

* Impaired vision/blindness

* Fearfulness & insecurity

* Sensory deprivation

* Hemiplegia

* Athetoid cerebral palsy (CP)

* Congenital dislocated hips

* Leg length discrepancy

* Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)

* Limited motor abilities

* Failure to thrive

* Poor head control

* Hyposensitive vestibular systems

* Cerebral cortical atrophy

* Hydrocephaly

* Agenisis of corpus collosum

* Microcephalic

* Developmental delay

* Intractable seizure condition

* Epilepsy

* CDH (congenital diaphragmatic hernia)

* Deafness

* Scoliosis.

Stuttering Anguish

Not many disorders can be as annoying as stuttering, rather known as a specific case of speech disorder. This speech disorder can not be termed as a disability but it is simply a case of non-fluent speaking where people suffering from it tend to stammer while pronouncing certain words or syllables. In most cases, stutterers stumble while pronouncing difficult words or elongate the vowels. Though stuttering can be mentioned as a simple case of speech disorder, the trauma undergone by the stutterers is not something which is easy to get over. Also not knowing the cause of the problem and not having a prescribed cure for it does not help the cause of stutterers much.

The problems faced by stutterers in their day to day life are innumerable. The first problem faced by the stutterers is within them. Stutterers find that they are not able to communicate as fast as their minds think and this leads them to feel the frustration and anger over themselves. Though they want to get over their disorder and get on with life, it becomes impossible for them to do so with their recurring stuttering problem.

But the major problem faced by stutterers is in the form of their society and the environment they live in. The society does not understand the difficulties faced by stutterers and considers them only as a piece of joke. The society does not realize the psychological and emotional suffering undergone by the stutterers. In most places, a stutterer is just made fun of, ridiculed or imitated and it is expected of the stutterer to take all of that in a sense of jest. The anguish of the stutterers is not understood by many and not many know that the ridiculing and teasing can completely change the personality of the stutterer.

Most stutterers tend to keep to themselves or develop a reserved nature to avoid communication with others. Some other stutterers develop a short temper which makes them unfriendly and are even more teased in their surroundings. The society must try and identify with the anguish of the stutterers and help them in every way possible to help them overcome the problem. There can be enormous hidden potential in a stutterer which may not have come out due to the taunting he / she had experienced in earlier years. With the right amount of encouragement and support, stutterers will be able to get rid of their problem and get along well in the society.

Design Ideas For Decorating A Small Dining Room

Your dining room is a space for family meals therefore you are looking for it to have a great interior design. But how can you make a small dining room look big on style? But if you practice these suggestions, you will realize that there are numerous methods for decorating a small dining room.

One thing you might want to do is be sure to decide on a room design that makes the most out of small spaces. One principle feature to avoid with small dining rooms is clutter due to the fact that it tends to make the room seem a great deal smaller.

By applying a particular decorating style, you can insert furniture and accessories which will make good use of the space in your dining room. Keep in mind design themes which allow for a variety of baskets and shelving since these can be used as extra storage. Deciding on a design you really can live with, however, is imperative as this is where you will be eating lots of meals.

Another core aspect of making your dining room look sizeable is the color palette. If you always believed that you were supposed to keep your spacially challenged rooms white, then here is some wonderful news for you. If you don’t want drab paint that is boring, think about having a monochromatic interior design in a muted color, or combine different colors which all produce the same intensity. For a scheme that is more colorful consider blues and greens that all have an equal intensity or if you prefer a soothing ambiance think about a monochromatic color scheme of pale blues. To add drama and depth, work on painting one wall a deep, intense tone – this gives it the impression of being further away along with adding an unusual charm. Pale colors will recede, therefore making the room seem larger and blueish gray is a great decorative paint color for a small room. But then if that sounds too colorless, don’t despair cool colors like blues, greens and purples also recede so you can use your beautiful shades without making the room appear small sized.

When it comes to loading the room with furniture, keep to small-to-medium sized fittings. One means to maximize space is to use a table with leaves, in lieu of a huge dining table which will free up some room while allowing additional seating when necessary. You can also fix any monotony in the decorating approach of your dining room by mixing large with small, so though you might decide to try the small table, add into your design a large mirror or server, which not only gives some style, but also gives you the feeling that the room is more spacious than it really is.

Thinking about where you place the furniture in the room is an additional tip for decorating a small dining room. Even your dining room might add to your well being when designed with Feng Shui in mind. Easy access into a room will make it seem more spacious, so place your furniture away from the doors. If you can, steer the eye from the open door to a bigger piece like a server or mirror can help divert the eye and give the illusion of space.

Provided you decorate with some industry known suggestions decorating a small dining room is a breeze. Practicing a bit of elbow grease combined with imagination can help make even the tiniest room appear like a designer showplace.

Asking for a Date

Whether a date's spontaneous or planned, the first or the last date, or you're young or old, sooner or later, going out with someone comes to this: Somebody has to ask for the date.

No matter how much or how little you plan (and regardless of your reputation, your Aunt Sylvia, the knot in your stomach, the advice of your friends, your New Year's resolution, or your success with dating or lack thereof) nobody, with the possible exception of Adam, ever made a date without asking for it. I bet that even with God as the go-between, sooner or later Eve expected Adam to pony up and find the courage to ask if they could take a walk in Paradise, and if he did not, well, it explains a lot about the snake, do not you think?

Face it, the only thing scarier than the first date is asking for the first date. But if you can remember that you're not looking for a cure for cancer, that you will not die even if he or she says "yes," and that life as we know it will continue no matter what your potential date's response, you may relax enough to actually (gulp) ask for a date.

Gazillions of perfectly normal (and lots of less than normal) people have all gotten nervous about asking for a date. You and I and everybody else are connected to a long line of sweating, nervous, stuttering, tongue-tied souls, and even the slick ones feel anxious on the inside about asking for a date. Do you feel better? No? Well, I was afraid of that. Never fear – in this chapter, I tell you some things that should comfort you in the asking, help you in the consummation, and protect you from any possible devastation beyond a teensy pinch on the ego.

Risking Rejection

The First Rule to asking for a date is this: No guts, no glory. The worst-case scenario is that the prospective date says no. At that point, you're no worse off than you are at this very moment.

Rejection is definitely not fun, but a rejection is only one person's opinion of you. You do not like everyone, and not everyone is going to like you. If someone says no, then he or she misses out on getting to know how truly terrific you are.

Rejection can be the beginning of opportunity. Scads of hugely successful people just would not take no for an answer. Think about Fred Astaire: When he first went to Hollywood, a talent scout wrote, "Big ears, too skinny, big nose, can dance a little." Many famous beauties and stars in many fields had to cope with someone's negative opinion of them – nobody has not faced rejection.

The question is: Are you going to let it get you down? Of course not! Alexander the Great probably conquered the world by the age of 30 because some shortsighted lass turned him down – maybe because he was too intense or short or something. Maybe that rejection made him want to make more than most

Grecians earn. (It's a pun; say it out loud – but definitely do not use it until the fourth or fifth date or after you're married or your last kid leaves for college or your hearing has gone.)

Rejection means that that person says no but not that everyone will. You need to realize when no is no, when someone's showing absolutely no interest. If someone consistently says no when you ask for a date, it's okay to say, "Look, I hear that you're not interested, and I do not want to be a pest. If you ever change your mind, here's my number , "or" I'll call you in a year, "but then for heaven's sake, do not call any sooner than that. With time, the sting really does go away.

Conversely, if you really do not want to go out with someone, do not say, "Maybe" or "Call me next week." Just say, "Thank you for asking, but it's just not possible." Remember that the world is a very small place. You may change your mind, or that person you turn down may marry your best friend or be in a position to hire you someday. There is no reason to ever hurt someone whose only sin is being interested in you, so be gentle but firm.

Rejection is not gender specific. It's not any easier for guys to face rejection than it is for women. We've just programmed men for power, and asking someone out is boss, even if the whole experience is tinged with fear. Either sex can feel more powerful by taking the initiative and asking someone out.

A brush-off with style

The coolest rejection I ever got was from a guy who told me that he'd just gotten a call from an old girlfriend. He said, "She's reemerged in my life, and I need to see where it goes. I'll either marry her and invite you to the wedding, or I'd like to finally put it to rest. No matter what happens, I 'd like to be able to call you. " Cool, huh?

Biology has nothing to do with the ability to tolerate possible rejection. Women, if you've never asked a guy out, you should do it for your own liberal education. Guys love it. However, they may think you're hotter to trot (sexually) than you really are, so take that into consideration.

If you're afraid of rejection, you may miss out on a lot in this life, which is pretty darned short as it is. See if you can put that angst away, take the chip off your shoulder, and go for it.

Improving Your Odds

When asking for a date, having a plan is crucial, but you've got to stay a little loose. The more structured you are, the more dependent you are on meshing well with a stranger. Therefore, you need to read the signs, stay loose, and keep things light, flexible, and open. You can seriously improve the chances of getting a yes if you keep these tips in mind when you ask for a date.

Never ask for a first date for a Friday or Saturday night

These two main, big, serious date nights are too important a place to start. Asking for a first date on a Friday or Saturday is like playing at Wimbledon without a tennis lesson or having ever played on grass or at all. Even people who do not have dates and have not had one for ages are often loathe to admit their plight to a stranger (and if you have not had a first date, you're still strangers).

Start off with a Wednesday or Thursday night, which are nights when people generally do not have much planned. Also avoid Mondays like the plague. Everybody hates Mondays.

Never say, "Would you like to go out sometime?"

If you phrase the invitation like this and the askee says "no," you've left yourself absolutely no out except to be swallowed up by a prayed-for earthquake.

If the person says "yes," you still have to ask him or her out. Yikes. Instead, be specific. It's much better to say, "I'd love to see the new exhibit at the museum. Any interest in going either Wednesday or Thursday?" You offer a specific opportunity (as well as alternative days) and at the same time, you give your potential date a great deal of room in which to negotiate without sounding wishy-washy or desperate. Giving specifics also allows your potential date a couple of seconds to think about it, rather than getting caught completely off guard.

Always offer options about the date

Options can include the day, time, activity, and transportation. Options make you sound organized without being bossy or rigid, as long as you keep them limited. Offering a few choices at the outset makes you sound less panicky than you would if you were to offer them after the potential date says no to your initial suggestion.

If you're specific about the date and your potential date does not like the suggested activity but does like you, you can modify your plan.

Also, although a plan with several separate possibilities requires more work on your part, it offers a better chance of success – and a chance to figure out whether your potential date has any interest in you. After all, if you've offered all options regarding place, time, date, activity, and so on and the answer is still no, the problem is as clear as the writing on the wall, and you've hit the wall. Take a deep breath and move on. It's not the end of the world, just this potential date. Scary but efficient.

By offering to meet there, go in separate cars, or pick her up, you instantly show yourself to be considerate, capable, and sensitive to the fact that females have heard horror stories about being abducted by a date and never seen again.Although you 're not Jack the Ripper, understanding that she may feel a little uneasy about being in a car with a stranger makes you a liberated and cool guy for thinking like a modern woman. You will score major points.

In the initial stages of dating, people sometimes want so much to be liked that they agree to things at the expense of their integrity. If your potential date has enough sense to say, "I'd love to do something with you, just not mud wrestling," then give that person a gold star. Do not be offended – be pleased. You have just found someone with brains, courage, and honesty.

Remember that timing is everything

Do not ask for tomorrow or next year. A basic rule is to ask for a first date a week to ten days in advance, but you can break this rule with impunity as the need arises. You can ignore these guidelines if the spirit moves you to be spontaneous. For example, "Hey, got time for an ice cream cone?" can get you an immediate yes; you can also expand this invitation to a "maybe next week" if you get a no.

Now is always a better time to ask than later because your courage may diminish over time. There are some obvious exceptions to this rule: Do not ask someone who is in a crisis (never ask for a date at a funeral), just getting out of a relationship (never ask for a date at a divorce hearing, even if the person is not one of the parties involved; it's bad karma), or going through any other experience when you may appear to be exploiting a weakness. You need to take the other person's life situation into account as well.

Always go for it if you're having a good hair or anything else day

You're cuter when you're happy, and self-confidence is sexy. Do not get into the "well, today is a write-off, I may as well ask, get rejected, and make it a perfect score" mentality. You can tolerate being turned down more easily when you're feeling strong – not to mention that rejection is a lot less likely.

Asking someone out for a first date is not the time to trot out your best anything, including your imagination, checkbook, or best friend. This is a time to think KISS: Keep it Simple, Sweetie. All you want to do here is send a clear and gentle but important message: I'd like to spend some time getting to know you better. Are you interested?

The Invitation: Sending the Message

You have several options when actually asking for the date. The choices may be influenced by circumstances (like distance), personality, and personal style. In general, the closer you are when you ask, the better. When you're close to the person, you get more information, you appear more courageous, and you get some practice for the date.

Answering machine etiquette

An answering machine message, unlike an offthe- cuff remark or rumor or discussion, can be saved and replayed and misinterpreted and overanalyzed and overreacted to and thrown back in your face. Not only that, but you never know who's going to be listening on the other end. Here are six messages never to leave on a date's machine:

1. You're the best I've ever had.

2. I never want to see you again.

3. It's me. Give me a call.

4. Next time, we'll go out.

5. Your mother is hot.

6 Can I have your friend's phone number?

You can adapt any of the following methods for sending the message to your level of comfort. But be careful that you're not hiding behind your comfort level – sooner or later, you're going to have to get out there and actually date.

1. Asking in person: When possible, this is the best way to ask by far because seeing the person face-to-face gives you the most information. You can read body language and see whether the potential date looks pleased, terrified, God-forbid-revolted, or delighted. Based on the other person's reaction, you can then modify your behavior accordingly or run. The disadvantage with asking in person is that it's also the scariest for the exact same reasons. But it's still preferred and also the friendliest technique.

2. Asking on the phone: This method gives you less information, but if you get panicky, you can always hang up before they answer (although caller ID has made hanging up without saying anything a great deal trickier). When you ask over the phone, nobody can see your palms sweating; but then again, you also can not see your potential date's reaction.

Never ask an answering machine for a date. It's cowardly, sends the wrong message (you're manipulating them by making them call back before you ask them out), and occasionally, the machine actually eats the message. You never know if your potential date got the message or if it was intercepted by a protective parent, a jealous ex, a careless roommate, or the Fates.

3. Asking through a third party: In elementary school, you may have asked your best friend to ask her best friend if someone liked you. You may have even eventually gotten an answer, but after Suzy told Peter, and Peter told you, were you really 100 percent sure about the answer? Third parties are a very unreliable method of information flow. When other people get involved, sometimes they add their two cents to your message. For example, what if your best friend liked me and wanted you to ask me if I'd go out on a date with him? Can you see lots of room for sabotage and miscommunication?

Remember the story of our Pilgrim forefathers, John Alden and Miles Standish? Miles was the governor who asked his best friend John to intercede on his behalf with Priscilla Mullens. Priscilla decided she liked the messenger, and Miles was left out in the cold. Do not ask somebody else to ask for your date. The messenger may end up taking your potential date, and then not only do you still need a date but you also need a new friend.

4. Asking with a note: Even though computers have made notes faster and sexier, notes do not offer you much information and feedback, whether they're e-mail or snail mail (through the post office). When you ask with a note, you also do not know the mood your potential date may be in. In addition, a note opens the opportunity for interception, misinterpretation, a delay in feedback, and a lack of flexibility. Ask anybody who's asked for an RSVP to a written invitation, and you begin to understand the problem with asking for a date through a note. If you're absolutely determined to ask for a date in writing, I suggest a handwritten note via the post office because it's classier and implies more effort and concern.

A brief note here on sending a note with flowers, cigars, wine, a baseball hat, a ticket, or any gift: Sending gifts with the note is cute but tricky. You do not want to appear to be bribing your potential date on the first date. Gifts can be a token of respect and admiration and are okay and even valuable as you're getting to know each other, but they can be too much too soon. Besides, you do not want to have to top yourself later and end up buying your potential date a small country by the fourth date. Start out simply.

Getting an Answer

Okey, dokey – you've made plans, offered options, and asked for a date. Now what? Well, either the answer is yes, you have a date, or no, you do not. If the answer is yes, you're flying and ready to go on to planning the old date-aroony.

Dealing with a no

If the answer is no, you have nothing to lose by asking if another day, place, time, or event would suit them. Listen to the response carefully. Often people really are tied up working late, taking care of a sick parent, getting out of a relationship, studying, or being distracted and would be willing to consider an invitation in the future, just not now.

If you're feeling brave, you can say, "If not now, how soon?" If you're feeling a bit vulnerable, you can say, "Let me give you my number, and you can give me a call when you're ready." The middle ground is to say, "Why do not I give you a holler in a week or two and see how you're doing?" If your potential date says fine, then do it. If he or she says "I'll call you," do not hold your breath. Who needs to turn blue?

Getting some feedback

If you get a no, you may want to take a minute to try to figure out why. Make sure you have not gotten into some bad habits. You may need to ask yourself some tough questions. Are you too eager, too desperate, too whiny, too silly, or too tense? Is your breath okay? Do you make eye contact?

No matter how honest you think you are, give yourself some balance by asking a willing friend to critique your approach (you've seen it in a million movies where the hero or heroine practices in front of a mirror – no, not Travis Bickle's " You lookin 'at me? "line). Balance your friend's feedback with your own opinion so that you're not being too easy or too harsh on yourself. If you mess up your careful scenario, your friend can give you some tips and hints on improving it, and you can make sense of what you meant to say or do.

Practicing can help you get a grip on your nerves. A little nervousness is flattering to the potential date because it shows that you really want to get to know him or her. Too much nervousness can panic both of you. All things considered, it's probably even better to be a little bit nervous than so nonchalant and cool that your potential date has the sense you could not care less if he or she accepts your invitation or not, because if he or she is not interested, no biggie, it's not them, you'll just move on to someone else. It's not a terrible idea to start a first date on an honest basis. I know – do not tell anybody I told you, and we'll try to keep it our dirty little secret.

Apple MacBook Pro MD318LL / A 15.4-Inch Laptop

The Apple MacBook Pro 15.4-Inch Laptop is a natural evolution of the line. Apple, some years ago, moved away from proprietary microprocessors and linked up with Intel to take advantage of Intel's processor expertise so the MD318LL / A uses a state-of-the-art quad core I7 2.2 GHz processor. Although one is tied tightly to Apple and its peripherals, one of the primary criticisms of Apple in the past, it is also one of their strengths as one can easily daisy-chain Apple peripherals from the Thunderbolt port to the device and one can expect stable high-speed data transfer and access. Apple's Lion operating system V10.7 gives it this capability as well as higher speed and the ability to use the full capability of the Intel processor powering the MD318LL / A.

The operating system has also been written to take advantage of the full capabilities of each processor of the quad-core processor so that the MacBook can run multi-threaded applications with each one taking full advantage of the processor's 2.2 GHz speed and up to 8 GB memory expansion. The operating system also takes full advantage of Apple's 1333 MHz bus for fast internal passthrough.

Apple has worked with Intel to ensure that the Thunderbolt connection features bi-directional data transfer at speeds of up to 10 Gbps, about 20 times faster than the standard PC. Here's where the Apple philosophy of daisy-chaining its peripherals makes sense as one can access, upload and download data in what seems to be the blink of an eye.

To use the same port for video data transfer at high speed, one does need a DisplayPort adapter. The DisplayPort delivers not only high-speed video data, but it also delivers it at high-definition resolution so that the MD318LL / A can be used to drive an HDMI-compatible high-definition device or one can watch the high-resolution video directly on the MacBook's 1440 by 900 pixel resolution screen (native high-definition devices run at 1080 resolution). Thus, the MacBook Pro is easily capable of providing HD video with rich colors and deep blacks and great contrast, all the marks of a great high-definition device. The MacBook uses the ATI Radeon high-performance chipset for this high-speed video, however, when it must slowdown to more normal speeds and video modes, it will automatically switch to the other side of the dual-mode video chipset, the Intel 3000 chipset, which is also good.

If you decide to join the Mac world, there's no turning back. If one purchases an external hard drive, for example, that one wants to interface with a MacBook, one will have to remember that it either has to be an Apple-produced device or one which has received full clearance by Apple. In reality, this is just an update of the old Appletalk network scheme where Apple-produced peripherals would talk to one another at high rates and, if one were lucky, one might be able to interface a non-Apple device through a different port.

As good as they are, Apple's are quite limited in their acceptance of non-Apple devices. For example, one can interface a standard VGA monitor to the DisplayPort adapter and that means one will not be able to take advantage of the true high-definition video of which the MacBook is capable. It's not that OS 10.7 is not a good operating system, because it is, but one are limited to Apple's library of either built-in software such as Mail, Address Book, iCal, as well as purchasing other utilities and editors through the Mac App store. One can also purchase great audio from Apple's iTunes service and the sound output from the laptop is excellent as it has great mid-range and low-end response thanks to built-in subwoofers.

Some issues one that one might find more than a bit limiting are Apple's insistence on using backlighting for its keyboard. One can turn it down – and if one knows the proper sequence – and one can also turn down the brightness on the 15.6-inch (diagonal) LCD display so that one can extend the lithium-ion battery's life to between five and Apple's advertised seven hours and the screen can be glare-prone in high-light conditions.

Capable of supporting up to 8 GB of memory and multi-threaded multi-tasking, the MacBook is a worthy upgrade to the older versions. It still has a Firewire connection, and also it can interface peripherals through the mini-USB ports, but again, remember they should be Apple-compatible to get full-featured use out of them.

If one opts for the MacBook, it will meet or exceed one's expectations in a form factor that's about 15-inches by 10 inches by.95 inches. At 5.6 pounds it is easy to carry, although it does become heavy and hot quickly. Apple has enlarged the keypad and made it more intelligent, doing away with conventional buttons and putting that functionality into the keypad itself, such as single-tapping, double-tapping, swiping and more. There's also a forward-facing FaceTime camera and software offered for videoconferencing or phoning.

The Making of a Medical Assistant

Medical assistant refers to professionals who are normally involved in mainly administrative as well as some clinical tasks. These professionals ensure that the offices of some health professionals such as the chiropractors, physicians among many other run smoothly. The specific duties these assistants do will vary greatly from one office to another and on the area of specialization which the office owner is involved in.

The size of the medical practice will also influence the roles the medical assistant does. In most small medical practices, the assistants will handle lots of tasks which will involve from administrative, all the way to some clinical duties and then report directly to the manager of the office. In a very large practice, an assistant may be in stuck in one department and be involved in the matters of the department and reports to the office manager of that specific department. These professionals should not be confused with some physician assistants who are normally involved in some diagnosis of the patients, examination and even treatment.

If you are a medical assistant you will be working in a relatively a clean environment where you will from time to time be meeting with different people. This is because you have several responsibilities which you carry out all at once. Some assistants work full-time and the duties are very demanding and you are likely to work for a minimum of 40 hours a week. There are however, those assistants who are part-timers and they work for shorter hours especially in weekends and evenings.

If you find some interest in being a medical assistant, you will be required to undergo a training program which will last from 1 to 2 years. This will be only an added advantage since there is no specialized training that is required for you to be working in this area. However, you will be required to have at least a high school diploma to be able to do the various roles done by these professionals. If you insist on getting trained, so that you could work professionally, you will then be required to join a medical assisting training program which is offered by some of the vocational-technical high schools, community as well as junior colleges. There are many such colleges in all the states within the US and you should take advantage of them. In addition to that, the colleges are quite affordable.

If you take the medical assisting program in a post secondary vocational school, you will take one year and get a diploma or certificate and if you take 2 years you will be having an associate degree. The course will normally cover some physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, transcription and other office related courses. In some cases, you will also learn some simple laboratory techniques and other medical related principles. All these courses will make a medical assistant to be more efficient in dealing with different administrative roles. You do not need to have difficulties in some of the medical terms for instance as these will affect your workmanship.

Natural Healing Therapy – Polarity Therapy

Importance of healing therapies is increasing day by day. Various detox therapies are practiced today to stay healthy and fit. Even the health care therapies from all over the world are adopted by people. Use of those therapies is increasing. But, there are some therapies which use multi-treatments to achieve detoxification.

Polarity therapy is a blend of three major healing or detox therapies from ancient east naturopathies. Those are yoga, acupuncture, and osteopathy and chiropractic treatment. The therapy was founded by Dr. Randolph Stone in 1940s.

An energy form drives life in all living beings, is the belief of polarity therapists. It was advocated by Ancient Indian ayurveda. The force is called as “Prana” by ayurveda and “chi” or “gi” in China. Western similar phrase could be defined as spirit or soul. That form of energy flows in the body which helps keeping good health and sound mind.

When this flow of energy is disturbed or imbalanced because of defective lifestyle, we face ailments. Defective lifestyle includes tensions, stress, incomplete sleeping hours, wrong diet habits, lack of exercise, overloaded schedule etc. Polarity therapy treats body, mind and soul at the same time regenerates the strength of the energy.

Neutral, positive and negative are the three relationships control your issues in day to day life. These relationships are maintained by five centers in the body. Those centers hold the charge of separate organic functions and health. This concept is adopted by ancient Indian concept of panchamahabhuta. Those are ether, earth, fire, water and air. They are responsible for controlling following organic functions:

Ether: ears and throat.

Earth: rectum and bladder

Fire: stomach and bowels.

Water: pelvis and glands.

Air: circulation and breathing.

Balance between all these points is important as that keeps the body fit. Polarity therapy’s helps to keep a balance between all these centers. As the therapy treats body, mind and soul at the same time, treatments like diet control, stretching exercises, massage, and meditation are prescribed by polarity therapists.

Human body has three energy fields:

1) Long line currents that run north to south on the body;

2) Transverse currents that run east-west in the body;

3) Spiral currents that start at the navel and expand outward.

Acupressure techniques and massage therapies are used to treat the problems which occur due to defects in those currents.

Diet: green vegetables, fruits, medicinal herbs are used in the diet. Lemon juice, olive oil, fruit, garlic and ginger juice etc. are used to detoxify the body. The span and quantity is decided according to the level of cleansing required. Cleansing is a primary step of purification. There is another diet to promote and increase health, after cleansing.

Exercise:

Yoga:

Yoga is used to exert the body. Specially to detox the breathing system.There are some exercises to purify the body and soul. Stretching exercises are also used in this therapy.

Concept of polarity also implies two forces, which are opposite in the nature, can be balanced with the help of third subtle third neutral factor. Those two opposite natures are rajas and tamas. Those can be controlled by satvic nature a neutral factor between both. Meditation is used to keep proper balance between them.

Thus, polarity therapy helps cure your body, mind and soul. So, choose a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Diet For Kids – The Impossible Dream?

The trouble with a healthy diet for kids is that, unless you are already eating healthy yourself, it’s more effort for you. Because the same foods that make up a healthy diet for adults can do the same for kids.

A little friend of my daughter recently had a dance recital we attended. I was horrified to see how many overweight kids there were. When I was in school (many years ago!), there were so few children that were overweight. What’s happened?

Yes, in no small part, I do believe it’s due to a lack of a healthy diet for kids. I know, I know, we all ate a lot of sugar and food coloring, etc, when we were kids. But there’s a lot more pollution in many different forms than there used to be. Water, air, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones/antibiotics in meat, well, it all contributes to a toxic sludge that is over what the body can easily flush out on its own. And then you add the “new and improved” preservatives in food (although I’m now being told by commercial “mind control” that high fructose corn syrup is good for me! What am I, an idiot?) Anyway, the FDA even is now on board with recommendations for NINE servings of fruits and vegetables a day. If you eat just three meals per day, can you do the math on that? Your meals are mostly fruits and vegetables, the way it should be. But, how many people do you know who are coming anywhere close to that? Do you and your kids eat that way?

I’ll give you an example from my own life to demonstrate. Today my daughter has (so far-we haven’t had dinner yet) apple slices with peanut butter (natural, not the ones with added sugar), pasta with tomato sauce, roast beef and fries (that was my mother-in-laws meal, not mine!), grapes, and strawberries. I’ll attempt to get two servings of veggies in at dinner. It’s easier to get the kids to eat fruit than vegetables, but I’ll take fruit over chips, pretzels and candy any day. If you count spaghetti sauce (again not the one with added sugar or high fructose corn syrup)as a serving of veggies, she’s at four. Plus at least one more for dinner, so that’s pretty good and that’s on a day I didn’t have full control of her menu.

Yes, it can be a little extra work, but I feel that so much of my kids health, both now and in the future, is dependent on developing healthy eating habits. And my husband and I try to eat very healthy, too, for ourselves and to set an example, so it’s really a family affair.

I think, too, that kids just aren’t as active as they once were. I’m certainly not lecturing you from MY perfect little world, don’t get me wrong, ’cause I know it’s convenient to let the TV “babysit”. And my daughter would be quite the couch tater if it were up to her. So I try to keep tabs on the time she spends watching TV. She’s still a little young to worry about video games yet.

But this article is geared toward the healthy diet for kids, so let’s get back to that. Kids learn by example, more than anything else, so it’s vitally important for parents to lead. It’s the best thing for the whole family. And I know some of you may object with such complaints as “My kids won’t eat fruits” or fill-in-the-blank with whatever healthy food. SO, one tip for parents with very young kids is: Start early, Start now! And if your kids are a little older, well, I may be a big meanie, but when my girl asks for a snack, I give her a few choices, like carrots or an apple, and she can pick from those. Or, if she asks for something specifically crappy, like cheese crackers, I often will negotiate by having her eat something healthy first. If they don’t know any better than to eat healthy, that’s the best scenario of all, but it’s awfully challenging to shield them from all the junk food.

By the way, since I wrote the paragraph on my daughter’s menu for the day, we’ve since had dinner. She had a bit of sweet corn and zucchini with some steak and baked potato slices with the skin on. Side note: Leaving the skin on your potatoes keeps the acid/alkaline balance in proper proportion. So when I pan-fry, bake, or make mashed potatoes, I don’t bother peeling. It’s healthier and less work!

Just like anything else, it takes some practice and a little time to incorporate a healthy diet for kids and you into your everyday lifestyle. But it’s worth it.

Pre-Christmas Weight Loss

Most of you had tried some sort of diet at some time in your life and realize the fact that losing weight can be a tough battle. It takes a lot of patience, motivation and time and a long frustrating wait to see some real results. But losing weight becomes even harder during the holiday period like Christmas, because this is when traditionally the whole family gets together and there is plenty of food around for easy picking, like ham cake cookies and sweets and other fattening food that always seems to be available and tempting.

And then because it becomes a family reunion you probably will catch up with family and friends that you haven’t seen in a long time. This gives you enough reason to want to look your best and impress them all. So here it is something I have found that you can follow for rapid weight loss before Christmas.

One of the reasons that some people find it difficult to shed weight is because simply their digestive system is not functioning how it should and not performing at its maximum levels this makes weight loss more difficult or even bring it to an abrupt halt. You could find that you are eating healthy foods and on a diet but your body is not shedding those unwanted pounds. This could be because your stomach is just not digesting your food in the way it should.

Now there are some new studies that show that there is a common ingredient that can aid the digestive system, and also help by speeding up the or weight loss process. So what is it? It is Citrus, which is found in lemons and limes. This may surprise you but yes it is true. Lemons and lime are nature’s cool tool to help you lose weight.

Lemons contain pectin, and in some recent studies scientists have found that pectin also helps to eliminate cravings and in some cases actually stop these cravings for up to four hours. So you can now see how the humble little lemon can help you on your quest to lose weight.

All you simply have to do now it is to introduce the lemon into your every day food intake. The easiest and most convenient way is to simply squeeze some lemon juice into your water and just drink this throughout the day. One way to kick start your metabolism at first start of the day is to add some lemon juice to a glass of warm water first thing in the morning.

Why not try drinking tea with a squeeze of lemon instead of milk and sugar? Avoid too much caffeine as it can slow down weight loss. Also remember alcoholic drinks should be kept to a minimum and so should sodas and fruit juices that are filled with sugar and chemicals.

You can also use the grated rind of lemons or limes in deserts and even adding some to your favorite chicken dishes which can add some zing and flavor to them for a nice twist.

Adding citrus to your weight loss diet increases the acid levels in the digestive system so then the body is able to absorb calcium better, which is a known weight loss promoting vitamin. You will find that moderate exercise and a healthy eating regime, and enough sleep at night combined with a daily glass of water and lemon juice, will put you way ahead of the rest in your quest of reducing your body fat.

You will now be able to fit into that outfit that you haven’t been able to wear in a while, and one you looked so good in before. You are now ready to dress and impress your friends and relatives over the holiday season.

4 Major Benefits of Doing a Pediatric First Aid Course

Pediatric first aid training courses will be very helpful to you if you work with little children or have children of your own. Parents, teachers and other children associated professionals will benefit a lot from this course.

First aid is a life saving skill which is easy to learn but can be retained for a lifetime. Pediatric first aid deals with babies, infants and children and is very essential. What exactly are the benefits of taking such a course, you may wonder. Four specific benefits are mentioned below.

• Easy techniques can save lives:
One of the incredible things about pediatric first aid courses is that it is only a matter of learning the simplest of techniques which actually save lives. Minor injuries like broken bones, sprains and wounds occur on a regular basis and you will be taught to deal with them in a proper manner. You will also be trained in dealing with more serious situations like choking, burns, fractures, etc. What you do and do not do in these situations can actually save a child's life.

• Instant help is not always available:
It does not matter where in the world you are or how efficient the emergency services are there; sometimes it's what you do in the first few minutes that can make the most difference in the victim's life. For example, in case of a child choking, knowing the correct process to save him, is a matter of life and death. You can not rely on the emergency services. Hence it better to undertake a pediatric course yourself so that you can make the difference.

• Convenient Course with short duration:
Many of you may think that pediatric courses are very lengthy and very complicated to learn. This is not always the case. Most of the time, these courses are fairly short and can be attended at your convenience either after work or during your lunch break.

• Courses are not expensive:
Unlike common thought, pediatric first aid courses are not expensive at all. They are quite affordable actually. When you ponder of the fact that the course will equip you with essential life-saving skills that may help you save a child's life, then the money does not really matter anymore.

The pediatric first aid course covers topics dealing with accidents and emergencies pertaining to young children including action planning, first aid box, unconscious child, resuscitation, bleeding, asthma, seizures, diabetes, poisoning, choking, burns, sprains, fractures, head injuries and childhood conditions like measles, meningitis and even the flu.

Even if you have already taken a standard first aid course, you must take the pediatric course if you are constantly around children, because dealing with children during emergencies is so much different to dealing with adults. Whether you are a teacher, a professional working with children or a parent with young children, knowing what to do in emergency situations is critical knowledge. For this reason alone, you should consider taking a pediatric first aid course. You will be trained in the skill you require to enable you to deal accurately when the opportune time arises.

Are Bedbugs Coming to Your Hospital Next?

Are Bedbugs Coming to Your Hospital Next? The parasites called bedbugs are not just in hotels, airplanes, trains, museums, department stores, offices, and restaurants anymore. Now bedbugs have been infesting hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, taxi’s, ambulances, and many more places. They travel very well and hitch a ride on people and articles very easily.

As public awareness increases, on this problem, the admission process, in some hospitals, now includes asking patients if they have been exposed to bedbugs – while they are being asked about their name and insurance information.

Bedbugs in hospitals have become such a big deal that some senators are taking a stand and adopting policies for the hospitals in their jurisdiction to enforce. If patients answer “yes” to the pre-entry screening questionnaire, measures are taken to lessen the risk to others in the hospital. At least two hospitals in Vermont have developed a new set of procedures to prevent any bed bug threat from a possible infestation of their hospital and emergency department rooms.

The new bedbug policy for hospitals is usually posted at the registration desk. On questioning, people answering affirmative will not be able to bring any unprotected luggage items, backpacks or personal pillows in to the hospital. Any personal belongings will be double-bagged as a further act of prevention.

I found dozens of articles listed on Yahoo.com about bedbugs in hospitals and what to do about it. Shocking! I’ve condensed that information here for you. Many hospitals do not have a bedbug prevention plan in place! Does your hospital have one yet?

Nurses protecting themselves and patients involves more than washing your hands! Picture this. You care for a patient who has brought bedbugs with him from the ambulance which carried him to the hospital. Nobody notices that they are on his clothes and in his bag of belongings. A few of them silently jump onto your clothes and hitch a ride home with you.

Would it be worth it to bring a change of clothes (in a zip-lock plastic bag) to work every day and change before leaving for home? Heat kills the bedbugs in the washer and dryer, so you could take your uniform home in a sealed plastic bag and wash it as soon as possible. You can wipe down your shoes with alcohol, and that would help. Protecting yourself, and your loved ones, is up to you.

What should I know about bedbugs? Bedbugs apparently do not transmit infections to humans. They leave itchy bites which leave red raised, itchy lesions and can become infected with scratching. “The bedbugs, and particularly the eggs of bedbugs, are even harder to kill than the spores of the bacteria,” says Dr. Dick Zoutman, a professor and infectious disease specialist at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada.

An adult bedbug can survive 550 days without food. WebMD’s bedbug article says bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs move fast but do not fly. They can crawl quickly on floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs over a lifetime. The size of a bedbug egg is about the size of a speck of dust.

Immature bedbugs are called nymphs. They shed their skins five times before reaching maturity. Their shed skin looks kind of like a super, super tiny, empty, plastic water bottle. They require a blood meal before each shedding. Under favorable conditions they can develop fully in a month. They can produce three or more generations each year.

Where do bedbugs like to hide? They tend to live in groups in various hiding places, but they do not create nests. Just before feeding their bodies are thin and flat, making it easy for them to travel with you undetected. They can usually be found in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.

Over time, they they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected locations like the space inside the walls at electric plugs. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments

When do bedbugs usually bite? Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed.

Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do.

People who don’t realize they have a bedbug infestation may attribute the itching and welts to mosquitoes. The only way to confirm bedbug bites is to find and identify the bugs themselves.

Signs of infestation – If you wake up with itchy areas of your body you didn’t have when you went to sleep you may have bedbugs. This is especially likely if you acquired a used bed or other used furniture near the time the bites started. Other signs that you have bedbugs include:

-blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases.

-dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets/mattresses/bedding/walls

-bedbug fecal spota, egg shells/shed skins

-an offensive, musty odor from the bugs scent glands

If you suspect an infestation in your home, please watch some of the free YouTube video available for directions of what to do next. And then call a pest company that specializes in bedbugs. Remember – don’t panic. Bedbugs do not normally carry diseases. They’re just disgusting to have around.

What is being done about bedbugs in hospitals? Zoutman helped develop a new hospital sterilization system that can kill bedbugs. It is said to be very effective and does not use chemicals which could be dangerous to patients. The article said it is available in Canada and will hopefully be available for use in the US soon.

But the main drawback to this system is that it took up to 24 hours to kill bedbugs, and up to 36 hours to kill their eggs. They say they are now working to adapt the system to kill bed bugs even faster and more effectively.

When bedbugs were found at a Southern Indiana hospital, the patients being dismissed had to shower before leaving, put on a clean gown, and have their clothes heat treated before they could be let go.

Orkin and the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services conducted a bedbug study on some volunteers and shared their findings. They found good news and bad news. Of those people bitten, very few experienced immediate reaction, and even fewer experienced reaction in the hours and days following. They also found that the elderly often have even less of a visible reaction to their skin than did younger adults after the bite. But because of the low reaction rates to the bites, the less likely was the infestation to be suspected or discovered.

There are pest companies all around which specialize in bedbugs. They even have specially trained bedbug dogs that are 90% accurate in finding infestations. A lot is going into this growing problem. Each of us can help stop the spread by knowing what to look for and what to do about it.

Cheers!

Dermatology – Know When to See a Doctor

Skin conditions can plague those of any age and lifestyle, which is why dermatology is so important. This practice involves the study of the epidermis, and deals with issues that could be life-threatening as well as problems that are simply bothersome. Find out when you should make a dermatology appointment.

Skin cancer can be deadly, but if you visit a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment, you can usually get rid of it without long-term effects. It is recommended that you examine your skin closely often to ensure that there have been no changes in moles, freckles, and birthmarks. Specifically, look for lesions that have grown recently and are now larger than a pencil eraser, areas that bleed and crust, new moles, or spots that simply have an unusual color or shape. Once you have noticed any of these, you should head to a dermatologist so that the proper tests can be performed, and the cancer removed if present.

People of any age can suffer from acne, though of course younger people are more prone to it. While this issue is usually just an aesthetic one, it can cause scarring that lasts a lifetime. If you are embarrassed about your acne, you do not have to simply suffer from it without treatment. Doctors that specialize in dermatology can usually put a stop to it using medications that are either taken by mouth or applied to the epidermis. Note that the length of treatment time can vary depending on the severity of the situation.

If you have noticed a rash that has no obvious cause and does not go away within days, you should head to a dermatologist. It may be itchy or painful, or it may have no symptoms except for a bothersome pink or red area on your skin. Either way, if an over the counter medication does not fix the issue, and it has been present for a few days, it may be time to schedule an appointment to get it looked at.

These are just a few of the most common reasons to find a dermatologist in your area. If you notice any abnormalities, whether they are visible or merely uncomfortable, you should allow the practice of dermatology to help you cure your condition. There is no reason to endure discomfort or embarrassment due to skin problems since there are so many qualified doctors and treatments available in this field.

Agriculture Inventions

Agriculture as we all know is production of agri goods through the cultivation of crops and also by the massive domestication of animals. This study is called agri science. Agriculture inventions have evolved massively by the years as farming and farm machines have grown too in these years. What was done by the threshing machine for so many years has been taken over by the combine.

One of the first agriculture invention was the iron plow used a lot those days in the 1700’s. Then came the wood plow in the 1800’s and the iron plow was discontinued as the wood plow was easier and better to use. And then man had a brain wave and discovered the use of animals in farming and tamed horses and used them in the Reaper which was used in harvesting wheat and were drawn by horses.

The Reaper was a huge success as an agriculture invention. After this man discovered he could do more and a little more machinery will be more helpful and work can be done faster and on a larger scale. The cotton harvester came in the 1920’s and it was a rage in agriculture invention. This was used in harvesting wheat on a large scale and really benefited the farmer.

Before this came the grain elevator in 1840’s it was used in separating the grain from the wheat plant. Soon the cotton gin followed which was used to separate the seeds and the hulls and the other stuff not required from the cotton. This was quite a successful agriculture invention. Man also developed the corn picker.

The most revolutionary agriculture invention was the Tractor which was invented in the 1940’s. This was the time when hand power was transformed into machine power. The tractor took over all manual work which used to take lot of time and energy of the farmers. This agriculture invention took farming to a different level.

To add on major agriculture inventions fertilizers were developed in early 1900’s. This accelerated the growth of the crops and produced very healthy crops too. A little later pesticides were also produced which helped in killing all the harmful pests which destroyed the crops, so this invention brought in a lot of development in agri-products. Open geared gas tractors were also made during this time. Disk harrow which is a machine used to cut the grain stubble which is left behind in the field after harvesting is over was also a big agricultural invention. This saved a lot of manual labor and time too as a machine can work much faster than humans.

One of the latest developments in agriculture invention is the bio-technology and genetical revolution. Bio-technology and genetics have changed the face of agriculture and farming. New ways and technology has come up in farming with this revolution.

New technology of farming has been developed by scientists and agriculturalists and has been named as urban farming. This is a big step in agriculture invention. Scientists have developed new technique called “hydroponics”, where plants are grown using mineral nutrient solutions instead of the normally used soil. Another new technique is called vertical farming where agriculturalists are growing crops in skyscrapers. This saves a lot of land problems and is a new beginning and a huge step in agriculture invention.

Man and times have grown tremendously in history and so has farming. Agriculture invention is growing as time grows by and it will take man places.

Codeine – The Dangers

Codeine addiction affects people in many different parts of the world, especially in places where it is available to purchase without a prescription. If taken in unmoderated doses over a long period of time, codeine addiction can result.

This isn’t surprising when you look into where Codeine actually comes from. Codeine comes from the poppy flower, the same source as morphine and heroin; it acts as a powerful painkiller. This prescription drug is used to treat such minor ailments as headaches, pain, anxiety and hypertension. Long-term Codeine abuse can cause many different health problems for the user.

When a drug has addiction potential and is freely available from pharmacies and supermarkets, this can result in consumers using more than the recommended dose. It is possible to start building a tolerance that inevitably leads to using in greater and greater quantities. If one Codeine pill doesn’t cure your headache, then two will, if two doesn’t work, then four will and so on.

A decrease in sex drive is the main indicator that someone is abusing Codeine. There are other signs that could indicate Codeine abuse such as drowsiness and slow motor skills.

Codeine addiction is just as serious as heroin or morphine abuse and should be treated by admission into a drug rehabilitation centre. The addict will try to consume Codeine in any way that is available. This includes, but is not limited to, oral use, smoking, and injected.

When the addict is using, they will experience euphoria, and will try to reach that same peak every time they use. This means increased dosages over time. As with most varieties of addiction, a Codeine addict may try and manage their dependency for a time. Eventually, their life becomes unmanageable and the user will begin to withdraw from society.

Anyone can become addicted to Codeine, especially if you’re using it on a long-term basis for acute or chronic pain. Codeine is also a popular recreational drug. It produces the same kind of high as heroin and suppresses emotional physical pain. There is also a common practice of mixing alcoholic beverages with Codeine to heighten the effects. These cocktails are extremely dangerous and can lead to an accidental overdose.

Defeating an addiction to Codeine is not easy. Withdrawal symptoms include: a racing heart beat, sweating, twitching, stomach pain, fever and vomiting.

Codeine abuse has long term physical effects that can cause health complications later in life. There are drug rehabilitation centers available that can help the addict to detox and cope with the withdrawal effects.

Much like a heroin or morphine addict, Codeine addiction is not something a user can beat on their own. Many rehab centres offer counselling services for family and friends. If you or a family member are suffering from Codeine addiction there are many medical services professionals who can help you find a place to recover and regain your life.
