1. Asking in person: When possible, this is the best way to ask by far because seeing the person face-to-face gives you the most information. You can read body language and see whether the potential date looks pleased, terrified, God-forbid-revolted, or delighted. 4. Asking with a note: Even though computers have made notes faster and sexier, notes do not offer you much information and feedback, whether they're e-mail or snail mail (through the post office). When you ask with a note, you also do not know the mood your potential date may be in. In addition, a note opens the opportunity for interception, misinterpretation, a delay in feedback, and a lack of flexibility. Ask anybody who's asked for an RSVP to a written invitation, and you begin to understand the problem with asking for a date through a note. If you're absolutely determined to ask for a date in writing, I suggest a handwritten note via the post office because it's classier and implies more effort and concern.

A brief note here on sending a note with flowers, cigars, wine, a baseball hat, a ticket, or any gift: Sending gifts with the note is cute but tricky. You do not want to appear to be bribing your potential date on the first date. Gifts can be a token of respect and admiration and are okay and even valuable as you're getting to know each other, but they can be too much too soon. Besides, you do not want to have to top yourself later and end up buying your potential date a small country by the fourth date. Start out simply.

Getting an Answer

Okey, dokey – you've made plans, offered options, and asked for a date. Now what? Well, either the answer is yes, you have a date, or no, you do not. If the answer is yes, you're flying and ready to go on to planning the old date-aroony.

Dealing with a no

If the answer is no, you have nothing to lose by asking if another day, place, time, or event would suit them. Listen to the response carefully. Often people really are tied up working late, taking care of a sick parent, getting out of a relationship, studying, or being distracted and would be willing to consider an invitation in the future, just not now.

If you're feeling brave, you can say, "If not now, how soon?" If you're feeling a bit vulnerable, you can say, "Let me give you my number, and you can give me a call when you're ready." The middle ground is to say, "Why do not I give you a holler in a week or two and see how you're doing?" If your potential date says fine, then do it. If he or she says "I'll call you," do not hold your breath. Who needs to turn blue?

If you get a no, you may want to take a minute to try to figure out why. Make sure you have not gotten into some bad habits. You may need to ask yourself some tough questions. Are you too eager, too desperate, too whiny, too silly, or too tense? Is your breath okay? Do you make eye contact?

Healthy Diet For Kids – The Impossible Dream?

The trouble with a healthy diet for kids is that, unless you are already eating healthy yourself, it’s more effort for you. Because the same foods that make up a healthy diet for adults can do the same for kids.

A little friend of my daughter recently had a dance recital we attended. I was horrified to see how many overweight kids there were. When I was in school (many years ago!), there were so few children that were overweight. What’s happened?

Yes, in no small part, I do believe it’s due to a lack of a healthy diet for kids. I know, I know, we all ate a lot of sugar and food coloring, etc, when we were kids. But there’s a lot more pollution in many different forms than there used to be. Water, air, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones/antibiotics in meat, well, it all contributes to a toxic sludge that is over what the body can easily flush out on its own. And then you add the “new and improved” preservatives in food (although I’m now being told by commercial “mind control” that high fructose corn syrup is good for me! What am I, an idiot?) Anyway, the FDA even is now on board with recommendations for NINE servings of fruits and vegetables a day. If you eat just three meals per day, can you do the math on that? Your meals are mostly fruits and vegetables, the way it should be. But, how many people do you know who are coming anywhere close to that? Do you and your kids eat that way?

I’ll give you an example from my own life to demonstrate. Today my daughter has (so far-we haven’t had dinner yet) apple slices with peanut butter (natural, not the ones with added sugar), pasta with tomato sauce, roast beef and fries (that was my mother-in-laws meal, not mine!), grapes, and strawberries. I’ll attempt to get two servings of veggies in at dinner. It’s easier to get the kids to eat fruit than vegetables, but I’ll take fruit over chips, pretzels and candy any day. If you count spaghetti sauce (again not the one with added sugar or high fructose corn syrup)as a serving of veggies, she’s at four. Plus at least one more for dinner, so that’s pretty good and that’s on a day I didn’t have full control of her menu.

Yes, it can be a little extra work, but I feel that so much of my kids health, both now and in the future, is dependent on developing healthy eating habits. And my husband and I try to eat very healthy, too, for ourselves and to set an example, so it’s really a family affair.

I think, too, that kids just aren’t as active as they once were. I’m certainly not lecturing you from MY perfect little world, don’t get me wrong, ’cause I know it’s convenient to let the TV “babysit”. And my daughter would be quite the couch tater if it were up to her. So I try to keep tabs on the time she spends watching TV. She’s still a little young to worry about video games yet.

But this article is geared toward the healthy diet for kids, so let’s get back to that. Kids learn by example, more than anything else, so it’s vitally important for parents to lead. It’s the best thing for the whole family. And I know some of you may object with such complaints as “My kids won’t eat fruits” or fill-in-the-blank with whatever healthy food. SO, one tip for parents with very young kids is: Start early, Start now! And if your kids are a little older, well, I may be a big meanie, but when my girl asks for a snack, I give her a few choices, like carrots or an apple, and she can pick from those. Or, if she asks for something specifically crappy, like cheese crackers, I often will negotiate by having her eat something healthy first. If they don’t know any better than to eat healthy, that’s the best scenario of all, but it’s awfully challenging to shield them from all the junk food.

By the way, since I wrote the paragraph on my daughter’s menu for the day, we’ve since had dinner. She had a bit of sweet corn and zucchini with some steak and baked potato slices with the skin on. Side note: Leaving the skin on your potatoes keeps the acid/alkaline balance in proper proportion. So when I pan-fry, bake, or make mashed potatoes, I don’t bother peeling. It’s healthier and less work!

Just like anything else, it takes some practice and a little time to incorporate a healthy diet for kids and you into your everyday lifestyle. But it’s worth it.

Now bedbugs have been infesting hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, taxi’s, ambulances, and many more places. They travel very well and hitch a ride on people and articles very easily.

As public awareness increases, on this problem, the admission process, in some hospitals, now includes asking patients if they have been exposed to bedbugs – while they are being asked about their name and insurance information.

Bedbugs in hospitals have become such a big deal that some senators are taking a stand and adopting policies for the hospitals in their jurisdiction to enforce. If patients answer “yes” to the pre-entry screening questionnaire, measures are taken to lessen the risk to others in the hospital. At least two hospitals in Vermont have developed a new set of procedures to prevent any bed bug threat from a possible infestation of their hospital and emergency department rooms.

The new bedbug policy for hospitals is usually posted at the registration desk. On questioning, people answering affirmative will not be able to bring any unprotected luggage items, backpacks or personal pillows in to the hospital. Any personal belongings will be double-bagged as a further act of prevention.

What should I know about bedbugs? Bedbugs apparently do not transmit infections to humans. An adult bedbug can survive 550 days without food. WebMD’s bedbug article says bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs move fast but do not fly. They can crawl quickly on floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs over a lifetime. The size of a bedbug egg is about the size of a speck of dust.

Immature bedbugs are called nymphs. They shed their skins five times before reaching maturity. Their shed skin looks kind of like a super, super tiny, empty, plastic water bottle. They require a blood meal before each shedding. Under favorable conditions they can develop fully in a month. They can produce three or more generations each year.

Where do bedbugs like to hide? They tend to live in groups in various hiding places, but they do not create nests. Just before feeding their bodies are thin and flat, making it easy for them to travel with you undetected. They can usually be found in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.

Over time, they they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected locations like the space inside the walls at electric plugs. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments

When do bedbugs usually bite? Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed.

Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do.

People who don’t realize they have a bedbug infestation may attribute the itching and welts to mosquitoes. The only way to confirm bedbug bites is to find and identify the bugs themselves.

Signs of infestation – If you wake up with itchy areas of your body you didn’t have when you went to sleep you may have bedbugs. This is especially likely if you acquired a used bed or other used furniture near the time the bites started. Other signs that you have bedbugs include:

-blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases.

-dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets/mattresses/bedding/walls

-bedbug fecal spota, egg shells/shed skins

-an offensive, musty odor from the bugs scent glands

What is being done about bedbugs in hospitals? Zoutman helped develop a new hospital sterilization system that can kill bedbugs. It is said to be very effective and does not use chemicals which could be dangerous to patients. The article said it is available in Canada and will hopefully be available for use in the US soon.

But the main drawback to this system is that it took up to 24 hours to kill bedbugs, and up to 36 hours to kill their eggs. They say they are now working to adapt the system to kill bed bugs even faster and more effectively.

When bedbugs were found at a Southern Indiana hospital, the patients being dismissed had to shower before leaving, put on a clean gown, and have their clothes heat treated before they could be let go.

Orkin and the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services conducted a bedbug study on some volunteers and shared their findings. They found good news and bad news. Of those people bitten, very few experienced immediate reaction, and even fewer experienced reaction in the hours and days following. They also found that the elderly often have even less of a visible reaction to their skin than did younger adults after the bite. But because of the low reaction rates to the bites, the less likely was the infestation to be suspected or discovered.

Agriculture as we all know is production of agri goods through the cultivation of crops and also by the massive domestication of animals. This study is called agri science. Agriculture inventions have evolved massively by the years as farming and farm machines have grown too in these years. What was done by the threshing machine for so many years has been taken over by the combine.

One of the first agriculture invention was the iron plow used a lot those days in the 1700’s. Then came the wood plow in the 1800’s and the iron plow was discontinued as the wood plow was easier and better to use. And then man had a brain wave and discovered the use of animals in farming and tamed horses and used them in the Reaper which was used in harvesting wheat and were drawn by horses.

The Reaper was a huge success as an agriculture invention. After this man discovered he could do more and a little more machinery will be more helpful and work can be done faster and on a larger scale. The cotton harvester came in the 1920’s and it was a rage in agriculture invention. This was used in harvesting wheat on a large scale and really benefited the farmer.

Before this came the grain elevator in 1840’s it was used in separating the grain from the wheat plant. Soon the cotton gin followed which was used to separate the seeds and the hulls and the other stuff not required from the cotton. This was quite a successful agriculture invention. Man also developed the corn picker.
