Nonepileptic Seizures

Nonepileptic seizures are related to conditions which cause the brain signals to become disrupted. It may be drug induced, or drug withdrawal. Many times a high fever or a concussion can cause a seizure. Abnormal sugar levels or too much or too little sodium in the blood may also spark an episode.

If the seizure or seizures do not happen again once the underlying problem is corrected, the person does NOT have epilepsy and is considered a Nonepileptic seizure.

Epilepsy, on the other hand, is a brain disorder where the electrical signals in the brain become overly excited, causing repeated, spontaneous seizures without an immediate cause.

Nonepileptic seizures, like epileptic seizures, are caused when electrical signals in the brain become abnormally excited.

Uncontrolled body movement and possibly collapsing to the floor are the most obvious symptoms, but sometimes it is noticeable changes in the eyes or changes of their attention or behavior that are the only symptoms.

The type of seizure a person experiences depends on what part of the brain is affected and the underlying cause.

Epilepsy is the diagnosis when the reason for the seizures cannot be identified, or there are no other neurological problems present, but has epilepsy in their family. Epilepsy can affect people of any age. That being said, epileptic seizures usually start between the age of 5 and 20.

Remember the difference between epileptic seizures and nonepileptic seizures is the recurrence of the seizures. Anytime there is permanent damage to the electrical workings of the brain-it is epilepsy.

If you have had a head injury, permanent damage to the brain tissue can result in epilepsy.

Anytime it is a seizure caused by a condition, or is an isolated incident-it is a nonepileptic seizure.

Saving Your Dog From Heat Stroke

Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat when they get hot. Instead, they pant, but this is not effective when the outside air is about the same as their body temperature. Panting can only help so much to lower a dog’s body temperature. Once a dog’s body temperature exceeds 104 degrees, heat stroke has occurred.

Thousands of dogs suffer from heat stroke each year, but it is no laughing matter. Although heat stroke can take hours before it becomes deadly, some extreme cases can lead to death in as little as 20 minutes without prompt medical attention.

Risk factors

The following pose an increased risk that a dog will suffer from heat stroke:

  • Being a Pekingese, Boston terrier, Shar Pei, boxer, pug or bulldog
  • Being a dog that is used to cool climates, such as a Husky, Newfoundland or Malamute
  • Being a dog with a double coat, such as a German Shepherd, Old English Sheepdog or collie
  • Being very young or very old
  • Being obese
  • Having long and/or dark-colored fur
  • Locking a dog in a car in hot weather
  • Exercising excessively in hot weather
  • Being left outside without water or shade in hot weather
  • Living in hot and humid climates
  • Having breathing problems caused a lung or heart disease
  • Spending a lot of time on hot surfaces such as asphalt or concrete
  • Having heart disease or hyperthyroidism
  • Having previously suffered from heat stroke

Excessive panting, foaming at the month and breathing difficulties are the first signs of heat stroke. The dog may also become anxious and whiny. The tongue will turn bright red. The dog’s saliva thickens and vomiting occurs. As the dog’s body temperature rises toward 110 degrees, shock sets in. The lips turn gray, bloody diarrhea occurs and the dog may experience seizures. Coma and death then occur without medical care.

Risk of dehydration

During heat stroke, dogs can quickly become dehydrated due to the loss of fluids from diarrhea and vomiting. The dog’s mouth and gums will become dry. The loss of fluids will cause the skin to lose its elasticity. As dehydration progresses, the dog will go into shock. The eyes will become sunken, and the dog may collapse.

The dog will require IV fluids in order to replace the lost fluids. In the short term, Gatorade and Pedialyte are also helpful.

Treatment for heat stroke must not be delayed. If the heat stroke is mild, moving the dog to an air-conditioned building will he helpful. Take the dog’s rectal temperature. If it is still above 104 degrees, cool down the dog by spraying him with a hose or putting him in a cool tub of water for several minutes. After he is completely wet, place him in front of a fan. Continue with the process until the dog’s temperature reaches 103 degrees. At that time, dry off the dog and discontinue the cooling process. Cooling down a dog too quickly can cause it to get hypothermia or go into shock.

If the dog does not respond to the cool-down methods, emergency care is needed. Take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. The vet staff will do several things to get the temperature to drop. They will administer IV fluids and electrolytes. They will also give your dog additional oxygen, if needed. There are no special medications that can treat heat stroke, but some medications may be used to prevent the complications of heat stroke.

The vet will also limit your dog’s activity and reduce food intake until his temperature has stabilized. The vet will monitor your dog continuously for several days. The prognosis can range from good to poor depending on how quickly treatment is started.

After the heat stroke episode, you should have your dog looked at by a veterinarian. Heat stroke can lead to swelling in the lungs, which can cause breathing difficulties. The vet may opt to inject your dog with cortisone to reduce the risk of this occurring.

Heat stroke can also cause heart and kidney problems, organ failure, blood clots, seizures and abnormal bleeding. These symptoms may occur days later.

You can prevent heat stroke by keeping him home in hot weather. Do not ever leave him alone in your car, even if just for a few minutes in cool weather. Temperatures inside a car on a 70-degree day can reach 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Even parking in the shade can be risky, so don’t take that risk.

Always provide your dog with clean drinking water at all times, especially on hot days. Keep water bowls out of the direct heat, as the water can quickly get hot.

Avoid having your dog exercise on hot days. If he does exercise, allow him access to a small tub or pool of water that can swim in to cool down.

Boost Your Psychic Powers

The sad fact of the matter is that we have become conditioned to see the world in our own way, and sometimes we almost become insensitive to the fact that there might be more out there than we are aware of. That is why it is very important to boost your psychic powers and become more attuned to the outside world. The truth is that we all have inborn psychic abilities – some people have it to a greater extent, some have it to a lesser extent, so if you are among the latter category and are feeling left out, don’t feel bad – you can polish your psychic powers with practice!

One good exercise is this – when you hear your cell phone ringing, don’t glance at the number flashing on the screen. Instead, close your eyes and try to focus on who is calling. Then when you pick up the phone, see if you were right. As you do this exercise over a period of time, your accuracy will dramatically increase, and your intuition will also become much better. This is a great exercise to boost your psychic powers and also your powers of prerecognition.

Another exercise is this – when you are standing in a queue for something, maybe at the bank, try to think which teller you will be served by. This is pretty much like the previous exercise, but the only difference is that you are being able to physically see your target. Your ability to physically connect with others in close range is polished with this exercise.

When you are watching a baseball or soccer match, try to imagine the final outcome, before the match begins. Your accuracy will be increased, as well as your intuition and clairvoyance. However, it is important to note that this skill shouldn’t be used for personal gains like gambling – that could lead to a messy situations.

Peer Mentoring and Mental Health Recovery

A peer mentor is typically seen as someone to look up to in a professional sense; someone who knows the ropes, someone to guide you, someone to protect you from making the mistakes they made, and someone to go to when you are unsure or need advice. Peer mentors exist at the school level with upper classmen mentoring underclassmen, and are a well established institution in numerous professions. Recently, however, the use of peer mentors in the mental healthcare field has found its way into American practices. Interestingly enough, peer mentors for mental health recovery treatment plans differ quite remarkably in reference to their duties between the American model of support and that developed by practitioners in the United Kingdom.

In cutting-edge American mental health facilities, one is beginning to notice the development of peer support groups and peer mentors. These peer mentors are mental healthcare consumers well on their way to successful recovery who have been employed by the facility they are receiving care from to help those at lower functional levels with similar diagnosis.

The benefits implicit therein are that the peer mentor has first-hand knowledge of what the mentee is experiencing. They understand the withdrawal pains. They can empathize with the frustrations of self-forgiveness. And they can guide mentees to more productive paths. Furthermore, peer mentors humanize the face of mental healthcare for each individual consumer; the treatment becomes relatable and believable because it is coming from the mouth of someone with the mentee’s very same diagnosis who has picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and made a success of themselves with the prescribed treatment plan.

In the U.S. context, peer mentors are typically a supplementary service; they are not primary care, they merely act as another factor of treatment. They exist to teach mental healthcare consumers how to function properly in the world again; mentors teach mentees how to get to the bus, how to get a transit card, where to get their groceries, where the bank is, etc. Professional providers still maintain their position as primary care giver and occupy the main psychotherapy role. Mental healthcare consumers argue this is very beneficial for mental health recovery, but would like to see more out of their peer mentors.

In the United Kingdom, however, peer mentors almost take the place of primary care givers in regard to psychoanalytical duties. When an individual with a mental illness experiences a downswing, it is their peer mentor who receives a call, not their doctor. This comes at a loss, however, for in taking on such a high-level role, peer mentors in the United Kingdom tend to ignore lower-level functions such as re-educating their mentees on the necessities, such as how to catch the bus, where to get their transit pass, etc with the expectation that the mentee’s support network will take on such duties.

The inconsistency in how the concept of peer mentors and peer support groups is approached is symptomatic of the differences between American and U.K. mental healthcare beliefs. In the United Kingdom, mental illnesses are seen as a communal responsibility; they are not shameful, it is merely the job of an individual’s support network to emotionally and physically encourage the individual throughout his/her treatment plan. In the United States, however, a mental illness is seen as an impurity in the family, and is followed far too frequently with alienation from social support groups.

Thus the U.K. peer mentors, as in following with their culture, take the lead in guiding mentee’s through troubled water they have already traversed. In America, mentors must take on the lonely role of the mental healthcare consumer’s only support group, thus teach them the necessities of life while leaving psychological treatment to the doctor.

Both approaches have their benefits for mental health recovery. Consumers seem to indicate preference towards approaching their peer mentors with day-to-day problems rather than a psychologist or psychiatrist who may sympathize, but not empathize, with their diagnosis, thus profess favoritism towards the U.K. model. Contrarily, however, one cannot change an entire culture, and American consumers enjoy the basic knowledge bestowed upon them by peer support groups; thus express a need for the American style as well.

Peer mentors can prove immensely influential in mental health recovery with regard to providing motivation and hope. Hope is a critical factor in recovery from mental illnesses, as can be read in my article Spirituality and Hope in Mental Health. Peer support, and its role in mental health recovery, is yet to be firmly established in the American context however; thus we must wait with abated breath as the movement grows to see what role peer mentors will take on next.

Caffeine in Chocolate – How Much is There?

Chocolates contain caffeine, but the amount contained depends on the variety and serving size. However, the stimulating effect we get from eating chocolates, which is similar to drinking coffee, is not caffeine. The main ingredient from chocolates that give us a natural high is called theobromine. It is known to have a longer effect to the nervous system compared to coffee. It promotes blood flow and brain activity. This is the reason why chocolates are lethal to animals because once they have eaten chocolates their nervous system will go haywire. On the other hand, humans can produce chemicals that work well with the ones found in chocolates.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and is sometimes referred to as theine when found in teas. It is a xanthine alkaloid found in the coffee tree’s leaves and beans. Caffeine is found in small doses in cacao and kola nut which is an ingredient in making cola beverages. It is also an effective natural pesticide in plants which paralyzes and kills many insects. Chocolates, which are made from cacao beans, contain small amounts of caffeine but does not provide the same effects compared to the caffeine found in coffee. Chocolate is also considered a stimulant due to its theophylline and theobromine content.

Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid found in the cacao plant where chocolates are made from. It is also called xantheose and belongs to the methylxanthine class of chemical compounds similar to theophylline and caffeine. The name theobromine comes from Theobroma which is a classification of the cacao tree. Even though it is considered to be similar to caffeine, it has a lesser effect on our central nervous system. Theobromine has been known to contribute to the belief that chocolates are aphrodisiacs and is known to increase heartbeat and dilate blood vessels which helps reduce blood pressure. However, theobromine which can be safely consumed by humans is deadly to animals. Small dogs can be poisoned if fed with chocolates from as little as 50 grams of chocolate.

The following is a table of caffeine and theobromine contents found in chocolates:

Caffeine Theobromine

  • White chocolate 3 or 1c, chips 0.0mg 0.0 mg
  • Baking chocolate, unsweetened- 1oz. 57.12 mg 346.36 mg
  • Semi-sweet chocolate/chocolate chips- 1oz.17.57 mg 137.78 mg
  • Milk chocolate – 1.55 ounce bar 11.440mg 74.360 mg
  • Cocoa mix – 1 envelope/3 heaping tsp 5.040mg 169.68mg
  • Cocoa powder, unsweetened – 1 tbsp 2.420mg 111.078mg

All of the favorite chocolate choices contain caffeine which is less than the average American cup of coffee average of 75mg. per cup. Therefore, while chocolates contain a small amount of caffeine, the stimulating effect we get from eating them isn’t caffeine-based. Instead, it is a natural high from a special chemical found in chocolates. This is certainly stimulating news for anyone who feels good from eating chocolate.

Lace Wig – Frequently Asked Questions

Lace Wigs are becoming an upcoming force in the hair industry, hence fueling a lot of consumer interest and questions. This article addresses the products most frequently asked questions.

What is Remi Hair?

Remi Hair can be categorized in the premium segment, as far as hair quality is concerned. Remi Hair is bundled in such a manner that the roots of the hair are on one side and the tip of the hair on the opposite side. The most popular lace is French Lace and Swiss Lace. The French Lace is most durable of the two. Both types give the wig and it’s hairline a natural look and which make the transition from hairline to skin nearly invisible. Each hair strand is hand tied with knots to the lace to give it the illusion of hair growth from the scalp.

French lace vs. Swiss lace

French lace is the most popular type of undetectable lace material used in producing in lace wigs. It has more durability than Swiss lace and is recommended for first time wearers. Hair Loss Causes – Taking Common Hair Diseases Seriously

Everyone loses hair every day. Doctors even say that it is normal to lose 100 strands daily. Still, many worry when it comes to hair loss. There are reasons why some should worry especially if a person has a hair disease. Common hair diseases that are related to scalp infections are either caused by fungus, virus or bacteria.

Tinea capitis or ringworm of the scalp is one of the most common diseases that affect the hair. It is a ring-shaped patch that is red on the sides and the center is usually light in color. This spot is scaly and inflamed. It may even have blisters filled with liquid or pus which may ooze.

The fungus spreads to the hair follicle which causes the hair to be brittle and fall out. Some of them are the Microsporum audouinii fungus which is the most common cause of ringworm, Microsporum gypseum which is carried by pets (mostly cats), Trichophyton tonsurans which can be found in US and Latin American Countries, Trichophyton schoenleinii in Southern Europe, Trichophyton megninii in Africa, and Trichophyton violaceum in the Middle East.

This infection goes away without treatment if the fungus is mild. To totally eliminate the chances of this infection to recur, it is best to take medication prescribed by a physician. You can take Griseofulvin or other anti-fungal drugs like Terbinafine, Itraconazole, and Fluconazole that treat ringworm.

Alopecia Areata

This is a hair disease that can be diagnosed with a gentle tug on a lump of hair near the infected area. This condition makes an affected person lose hair in patches and of different sizes. The person’s immune system attacks the hair follicles causing the patches. Around 0.1 – 0.2% individuals all over the world has this case. It is not contagious and is more common in females.

Some types of alopecia areata are: areata totalis, alopecia areata universalis, alopecia areata monocularis and alopecia areata multilocularis. These types vary by number and areas of spots affected. Some patients prefer to grow hair naturally and without treatment if the affected area is small. Some take medications like corticosteroids which can be injected or applied to the affected areas. Topical drugs like rogaine or minoxidil are topical sensitizers that are used to treat the condition and cause hair growth.

Scarring Alopecia

This disease is one of the major causes of hair loss around the world. Also known as cicatricial alopecia, this condition affects men and women from all age group. This is a medical condition where the hair follicles are inflamed due to infection.

It starts in small patches which gradually expand. Most cases go unnoticed but there are few instances when the patches hurt, itch or have a burning sensation. It appears red in color which may be lighter or darker than the normal skin.

This condition should be studied carefully by getting a sample tissue or biopsy since this condition presents itself under the skin. Through biopsy, the severity and the cause of scarring alopecia will be determined.

Immediate treatment is needed to prevent irreversible damage to the hair follicle. Treatment is extensive and should be maintained by an individual affected with this condition. Usually, doctors prescribe antibiotics or topical creams. Injections can be used to treat the affected skin for faster results.

Fetal Head Injuries During Birth

When you are preparing for the birth of your new baby, you are probably excitedly outfitting an infant’s room, purchasing teeny-tiny socks, and colorful baby toys. While most babies are delivered with hardly any problems, some suffer from head injuries due to the negligence of doctors and nursing staff. There are several different types of fetal head injuries that can occur and affect your baby for life.

First, many people associated baldness with older men. However, during the birthing process, your baby’s scalp can be injured so that he or she will have a permanent bald spot, called alopecia. In most cases, alopecia arises when a vacuum is used during a difficult birth. Because of the vacuum’s powerful pull on the baby’s scalp, it can damage the part of the skin that is in charge of growing hair. While this may only be a temporary loss of hair, the damage can also be so severe that your child will have a permanent bald spot.

Next, cephalohematomas do not typically cause long-term injury, but they can contribute to unsightly bumps that may take months to go away completely. With a cephalohematoma, trauma to a baby’s head during delivery causes the blood vessels that supply the scalp to tear, so that they bleed. The blood collects under the scalp, forming a large lump. Although these aren’t inherently dangerous, they can mark the site of a skull fracture, which your doctor should be sure to check and see if the cephalohematoma covers a truly serious underlying issue.

Additionally, doctors and nurses who do not handle a baby with care after it is born can contribute to abusive head trauma, commonly known as shaken baby syndrome. A newborn does not have the neck strength to hold its head steady while it is being handled. Thus, if a doctor or nurse handles the child too roughly or accidentally drops it, the motion can shake the head around. With this, the brain slides around inside the skull, which causes the brain to bruise. This can cause sensory problems such as blindness or deafness, as well as developmental delays, mental retardation, and cerebral palsy.

Doctors and their medical staff have the responsibility of keeping you and your loved ones safe from harm. If your doctor has handled forceps or vacuums with too much force during delivery, resulting in a birth injury to your child, you should consult a birth injury attorney about your rights.

The Negative Side of Humor

Where there’s a positive side of things…there’s usually a negative side, and that applies to humor as well.

Unfortunately, the negative side of humor can be ugly…it can hurt feelings, and can be damaging and destructive! There are people in this world who will do almost anything for money. There are people in this world who will do almost anything for power. There are people in this world who will do almost anything for fame. And, there are people in this world who will do almost anything to get a laugh…and if they hurt somebody in the process…no apologies…business as usual!

In my view, this country is suffering from a big fat attitude problem that needs to be fixed! What are parents teaching their kids…to be corrupt? What happened to manners and respect? I haven’t seen a local news broadcast on television for years! Why? It’s the same old broken record…only the names change. The same old tired stories…who murdered who…who robbed who…another woman was raped, and there is more and more corruption…scandal, etc.

All of this gets old after a while. You have to wonder if there is any good news in America anymore! Yes, there is, but good news doesn’t sell newspapers, and the television ratings and newspapers won’t sell, if there is no bad news!

I think this society is turning more and more negative, and all that negativity rubs off on the children and grandchildren. There so much negativity in this society, that some of the people who are supposed to be leaders and model citizens in the community are being busted for one thing or another. Corruption; DWI; bad behavior in general.

How does humor fit into all this bad behavior? Put down of others…just to get a laugh! Ethnic jokes…just to get a laugh! Racial slurs…just to get a laugh! Dirty jokes…just to get a laugh! Teasing of others…just to get a laugh! Negative humor, like booze; prostitution; drugs will always be with us, and we all have to live with it, etc. Negative humor is another black eye for America!

A few years ago, was when we heard of the violence on a few high school campuses around the country. Students and others were shot and murdered on school grounds! There is no doubt in my mind, that some of this violence started, at least in part, because of teasing kids until they couldn’t take it anymore…JUST TO GET A LAUGH!

What are parents teaching their kids today? Have they ever heard of mutual-respect? If they’ve heard of it, do they teach mutual-respect to their kids? Many of us have been teased in school, I know I have. Being Hispanic, I remember I was teased because I didn’t speak or write the English well. Kids would make fun of me…JUST TO GET A LAUGH! It was so upsetting to me, that I didn’t want to go back to school! Everyone knows kids can be awful. I was always reluctant to give an oral book report for fear that the kids would laugh at me! I will always remember those awful days of ridicule and hate!

If you’ve ever been put down, by those who I refer to as “the jokesters and people of put-down,” who enjoy getting a laugh at somebody else’s expense, then you know how awful it can sting! I’m reminded of a comedian (so he calls himself), who goes around the country, putting down and making fun of the disabled and the challenged…JUST TO GET A LAUGH! This guy is the lowest of the low! What kind of humor is this? What kind of people would go to see this JERK, who finds laughing at challenged people amusing! This so-called comedian and his followers are what I call “the little minds of the world!” They’re warped…all of them, who would do something like this!

Where is this country headed when we allow this kind of thing, that is, making fun of the disabled and the mentally challenged? I know the issue of free speech in involved…and not much can be done about it! Will you allow your children to see this so-called comedian putting down the disabled and the challenged?

* I don’t see anything funny or amusing about a person who has suffered an illness; an accident and who will spend the rest of his or her life in a wheelchair.

* I don’t see anything funny or amusing about a person who was born with a deformity.

* I don’t see anything funny or amusing about a blind person who is struggling to cope.

* I don’t see anything funny or amusing about a person who has a speech impediment, hearing loss or severe burns!

Regrettably, humor can play a part in all this, because there the “little minds of the world,” that I spoke of earlier, who laugh at all this to get their kicks…UNTIL A TRAGEDY HAPPENS TO THEM! But, there IS a solution to all this, and it lies only with the parents. Parents have to teach their kids to respect others…teasing or the put-down of others is out of bounds! Two of the most important words in the world are, “mutual-respect,” and parents have to teach their kids to respect others, and to stay away from negative people, so they don’t become negative themselves.

Negative and dirty humor are NOT acceptable to me! A person doesn’t have to be dirty to be funny! Negative humor can sting, if you are on the receiving end of it! Many years ago, the senior President Bush declared, “What we need is a kinder, gentler nation!” What he was talking about, I believe, is what we are doing to each other as a People…and much of which is no laughing matter!

How to Tune a Piano – A Crash Course Guide

In and of itself, a piano is an expensive purchase and it should be well taken care of. Part of taking care of a piano consists of tuning it and just that alone is a daunting task because it takes a lot of patience and knowledge.

It is recommended to hire a professional for the job since they know how to tune a piano and certain things are needed to do the job correctly. The four important tools needed are light for better viewing, an electric tuner, a mute and a tuning wrench. These are not your average tools from a tool box, but a professional pianist tuner would have these tools and more.

The piano will need to be taken apart, and this is where the light or flashlight would come into play. The process of tuning a piano requires that the strings be lengthened or shortened. These strings are connected to each individual key of the piano.

Inside the piano there will be strings as previously mentioned. Find the knobs because this is how you will begin your tuning. Each tuning affects the pitch, so depending on how loose or tight the piano is tuned will give off a different sound. As a result, depending on the pitch sought after, the knobs will be turned either left or right.

Next, it is time to actually tune the piano. The best thing to have here is an electric tuner. This device will be a lifesaver because, while it does not tell you how to tune a piano, it does a great job at detecting the pitch. If the pitch is off after tuning, it will profoundly affect the sound of your piano. If that's the case, continue to turn the knobs as necessary until you find the right pitch.

As you are tuning the keys of the piano, please be aware that you are dealing with an exquisite item, and strict care must be used. The strings can crack, or pop, and that would not be a good thing. Now that you have learned how to tune a piano and you know all the work it involves, it is well advised to have a professional do it. That being said, if you're going to do it yourself, go slowly and be patient.

Since the events of September 11, 2001, the United States has created and staffed a whole new piece of government, and called it Homeland Security. This agency has taken over the primary responsibility for keeping the US safe from terrorism, both foreign and domestic. This has led to interest in and a need for ways to get a Homeland Security degree.

A degree in Homeland Security is not actually a hard thing to find– a fair number of universities offer them now, including online colleges. They are available at associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree levels so most students can find one that fits their needs. Getting a degree in Homeland Security prepares people for jobs in the still-increasing market of the field.

Subjects covered in a Homeland Security degree range widely from political science to engineering and psychology. The idea is that someone with this degree will have a widely-based enough education to understand at least the fundamentals of possible threats from a variety of angles. A good grounding in the basics of these disciplines also allows students to understand the higher level coursework in security and emergency preparedness and response that follow the foundation classes.

Most national security programs are careful not to focus on any particular ideology or political views. The education given in these programs is in keeping people safe from potential threats, not in being politicians, and reputable degree-granting institutes recognize and implement programs to protect this.

People with degrees in Homeland Security find jobs at all levels of government, from working for the city as emergency responders (police, fire and paramedics) to those who work for the highest levels of the federal government. The Department of Homeland Security has a very large budget and employs 170,000 people who serve in a variety of jobs. All of them protect national security in some way.

Because security is such a broad job field, there are many internships to prepare new graduates for the job that they will enter. The education in this field is a basic grounding in the principles of the field, and then the students learn how to perform their actual jobs during an internship or while employed in an entry-level position.

Because the budget of national security is so big, and because they have assumed responsibilities that previously belonged to other federal agencies, the job market for those with security experience and educations is still growing. A degree in Homeland Security gives a person a good chance of finding a job within the field, at least at the moment, and is attractive to some people because of this in our currently low economy.

Choosing any major because of the job potential is fairly common, but generally a bad idea. These people often find that their jobs aren’t fulfilling, but take so much time that they can’t enjoy themselves at the things they truly want to do. Homeland Security jobs are often those that require the full commitment of the individuals employed in them, so it could be an especially bad idea within this field. For people who feel that these kinds of service-based jobs are their calling, though, they can be extremely fulfilling.

Healthy Diet For Athletes – 5 Tips

Athletes, in particular, need to focus on what they put into their bodies. Whether you are a weekend or a professional athlete, you take great pains to make sure that everything you eat meets the requirements of a healthy, balanced diet.

As an athlete, you need a healthy diet because you are keenly aware of how your body looks. But, just as or more importantly, you want to make sure that every calorie counts toward your workouts and competitions.

Here are some tips for a healthy diet for athletes:

1. Avoid junk foods

A healthy diet for athletes does not mean you have to eat only foods that are "good for you." In fact, the occasional cookie, chip or hamburger, can actually be a nice treat. However, on the whole, junk food needs to be very low on your list of food priorities. Junk foods are generally full of trans-fats, white sugar, and white flour. Your workouts do not need the calories. And, you know that when you eat junk food, it weighs you down. Not only do your workouts not go nearly as well, but when you eat junk food you just generally do not feel as good.

2. Match you caloric intake to your activity

If your idea for a healthy diet is inspired by two parallel goals – losing weight and performing better athletically – you need to make sure you do not reduce your caloric intake so much that you are not able to fuel your workouts or competitions. For non-athletes, the bare minimum daily caloric intake should be 1,200 to 1,500 calories. However, for athletes, you will need to greatly increase your caloric intake if you are working out regularly. You may need to take in 2,000, 3,000 or more calories per day if you are working out heavily – even if you are on a diet.

3. Keep your diet as varied as possible

When you embark upon your new diet, you may be initially tempted to find a few foods you like a lot and stick with them always, day in and day out. However, there are two reasons why you will want to avoid eating the same small set of foods each day. First, you will get bored with this diet very quickly and likely quit your diet too early. Second, having the same foods every day does not give your body the opportunity to absorb the variety of nutrients from different foods it needs to be healthy.

4. Eat three meals, plus snacks, as needed

Plan your new diet around three solid meals per day. If you find you need more food than you can eat in three meals due to heavy workouts that burn a lot of calories, work in one or more snacks throughout your day.

5. Include a variety of foods, including pastas, eggs, fruits and vegetables

Your body requires a variety of nutrient sources. Happily, there is a wealth of options available to you. A healthy diet for athletes should include a mix of the following foods: legumes (eg, beans), pastas, lean meats (eg, ham), vegetables (eg, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower , potatoes, peas), fruits (eg, melon, apple, bananas, grapes) vegetable soup, fish, whole-grain breads (eg, brown bread), cheese (eg, cottage cheese, low-fat spread cheese), brown rice , and dairy (eg, yoghurt, skimmed milk). And, be sure to drink plenty of water: 8-16 glasses per day.

As an athlete, you owe it to yourself to fuel your body with the best foods you can find. You will feel better, look better, and perform better in the gym and on the field.
