Epstein Barr Disease – Treatment and Cures

The Epstein Barr virus (EBV) is the cause of Epstein Barr Disease, commonly called mononucleosis or glandular fever. The illness is most common in teenagers and young adults, although it can occur in children and the elderly. Most people have had EBV by age 40.

Symptoms of Epstein Barr Disease may include sore throat, swollen lymph glands, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea and gastrointestinal upsets. Complications can be liver and spleen enlargement, secondary infections like strep throat and pneumonia, inflammation of the heart and brain, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There is an association between the virus and MS, and some rare cancers, although the triggers for development of these diseases are still unknown.

EBV is transmitted via saliva through kissing or sharing drinks, eating utensils, lipsticks etc. The incubation period is 30 – 50 days from exposure to the virus to symptoms appearing. The virus is shed from the throat of an infected person during the active phase of the illness. It can also be shed intermittently from the throat of a healthy carrier who shows no symptoms.

EBV is a member of the herpes family. Once the virus has been contacted, it remains in the body for life. Most people get over the initial infection within a couple of weeks to a month. However in some people there is a recurrence of symptoms for months or years after the initial infection.

Conventional treatment of EBV is rest, plenty of fluids and painkillers to relieve the symptoms. Antibiotics are of no use treating this illness because it is caused by a virus not a bacteria.

Natural Epstein Barr Disease treatment is focused on boosting immunity, repairing the adrenals, supporting the liver and cleansing the lymph. An EBV cure is aimed at getting the initial infection under control and keeping the symptoms at bay for life.

EBV remedies include the use of high dose vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and the B complex. Anti-viral herbs like echinacea, astragalus and olive leaf extract are beneficial. If the liver and lymph are congested then the herbs milk thistle and red root can help.

A diet for EBV should provide high quality protein with each meal. An abundance of fresh vegetables, low carb fruit and essential fats are important to rebuild strength and immunity. Sugars, alcohol, caffeine and processed foods should be avoided.

Chronic Epstein Barr Disease patients may need to incorporate other therapies like liver cleansing, graded exercise and stress management into their routines in order to get a complete recovery. Support from a health professional, family, friends or a support group is vital. Without support and motivation, depression and lethargy can set in, making recovery more difficult.

Health Service in the USA

I am British but have always been interested in American politics. I have recently been fascinated by the major news broadcasters bias against the Presidents health care bill. Fox News in particular has a campaign going against this bill. I would like to give you a Brief History of the National Health Service in the UK. It was introduced in 1948 by the then Health Minister Aneurin Bevan [A Welshman like myself] Aneurin or Nye as he was called had the same problem that faces President Obama and that was the rich powerful minority did not want the poor majority of the nation to have free healthcare. In fact the only way Nye got the Heath Service going was to bribe the wealthy hospital consultants by allowing them to have private patients as long as they committed to work so many hours for the National Health Service. He later famously said "I stuffed their mouths with gold" The only obstacle left was the Doctors who only weeks before the National Health Service was to be introduced voted overwhelmingly against joining.

Now the only group of people capable of changed these Doctors minds were British Women. These women had seen what sacrifices their mothers had made looking after the family through the second world war and had seen them grow old prematurely as a result, they felt they deserved better healthcare so they boycotted those Doctors who would not sign up, the Doctors soon fell in line and so the National Health Service was born. What is also interesting is that a Labour Government introduced this bill, no Conservative Government [and there has been many since 1948] have dared to change it. The republican party of America should take note that if they ignore this potentially strong group of lower income women it could cost them any chance of winning a future presidential election.

Thrombosed Hemorrhoid Treatment – Stop Thrombosed Hemorrhoids Now

Hemorrhoids are annoying and painful. They can also be dangerous if left untreated and diagnosed correctly. Thankfully, if you do have one, there are a lot of options for treatment that includes natural, non-surgical, and surgical methods. Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatments are available through most hospitals and family clinics, some natural remedies can even be done at home.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are inflamed, swollen, or enlarged veins in the rectum or anus. High rectal vein pressure and increased straining may cause them. Extended periods with diarrhea or constipation with hard stool may also contribute. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that have been blocked by blood clots. These commonly show as hard lumps and are painfully swollen.

The Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

Symptoms of this disease include pain, and swelling in or around the rectum and anus, especially during defecation. Most people experience hemorrhoid symptoms but most of these will go away within a few days. If you think you have a hemorrhoid it is important to visit and consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis because some other more serious and sometimes life threatening disease present with similar symptoms as hemorrhoids. Diseases that have similar symptoms are rectal cancer, anal fissures, anal abscesses, anal fistula, and perianal hematoma among others. During diagnosis you may expect external analysis and, in the case of internal hemorrhoids, an anoscopy. In cases of ruptured or bleeding has occurred tests are also called in to see if there is an infection. If hemorrhoids are found they will be classified. Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatment procedures will vary according to the state of your hemorrhoid.

The Treatment Options

There is no one cure for hemorrhoids but treatment regiments do exists that can are exceptionally effective. Hemorrhoids that have just presented, new ones that have only been there for 2 or three days, and small ones are usually treated conservatively. This means only a change in diet, sitz baths, analgesics, proper anal hygiene, herbal remedies, and sometime topical creams. A high-fiber diet and proper intake of liquids is recommended for all hemorrhoid sufferers to prevent hard stools. Proper care should also be taken to prevent liquid stools and diarrhea as this may also cause pain to the hemorrhoid sufferer. Cold compresses and hot baths can help relax the veins and heal the hemorrhoid. Ointments and suppositories can provide pain relief and lessen the inflammation of external hemorrhoids. These practices can help prevent further development and irritation of your hemorrhoids.

Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatment may also mean some and medical procedures. Rubber band ligations, the common method of dealing with large hemorrhoids, are done with elastic bands applied to a hemorrhoid that cut off circulation to the hemorrhoid and it will slough off with normal bowel movement in a couple of days. Enemas are also sometimes done to clean the area, though extreme care must be taken, and the procedure should be done by a doctor. Laser, Infrared, or Electric cauterization can also be used. Infrared coagulation is the most common non-surgical procedure in the United States. There is no perceivable advantage to each of these procedures, and personal preference is usually the deciding factor on which technique shall be used.

Depending on the case minor surgery to remove the clot or the hemorrhoid itself can be used. Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatment is done through a multitude of options that are available depending on the doctor or hospital. Sclerotherapy uses injections of hardening agent on hemorrhoids that harden the veins and causes the hemorrhoid to shrivel up. “Grade III” or “Grade IV” hemorrhoids, usually the largest ones, are usually treated with hemorrhoidectomy, which is a true surgical procedure in which the hemorrhoid is lanced of the area. This is most effective in cases where non-surgical therapy has not worked or with large hemorrhoids with severe symptoms. Post-operative pain is the most common major complication of this procedure. It may require two to four weeks before the patient can return to normal activities after the surgery.

Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatments are numerous and varied but it still remains a fact that conservative medical therapy and natural methods are best when dealing with early stage and new hemorrhoids. One should keep in mind that one must ask consent from their doctor before taking or applying these remedies to avoid conflicts or other possible drug interactions that may harm the patient. Natural astringents like witch hazel, cranesbill, honey, and aloe vera are used to sooth the affected area and reduce swelling. Ice packs can relieve inflammation and irritation of hemorrhoids. Dietary supplements like Billberry extract, Horse-Chesnut extract, Butcher’s broom and other bioflavonoids can help treat hemorrhoids by helping strengthening, protecting and, relieving vein problems. An effective and well balanced fiber enriched diet will not only help with your current hemorrhoid but will also prevent future ones.

Other physical techniques have also proved effective in relieving hemorrhoid pain. Using the squat position during bowel movements have been tested, though inconclusively, against hemorrhoid occurrence and had somewhat proved effectiveness. Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatment techniques like raised legs during sleep may help enlarged veins return to normal size. Hot baths can also help relax the veins and help with the pain. Wearing loose clothing and light underwear may help the sufferer as tight clothes can often add to the irritation and pain. Kegel exercises used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles can also help with the pain.

Thrombosed hemorrhoid treatments may be covered by your insurance company under general medical procedures. As with most illnesses the natural and preventative measures mentioned here are the cheapest and easiest to maintain.

Be sure to check with health professionals about this and other medical advice and implications of your hemorrhoids. Also remember to alert the doctors if you currently have any other medical conditions or if you are taking any medications especially before surgery.

I Want To Feel Young Again Like You – He Asked

The other day, I received a rather nice complement from a colleague who noted my excellent shape and fitness. Let me tell you, staying in shape at this level is a lot of work, it's a huge sacrifice, but I feel worth it. But, not being a fitness consultant or personal trainer I wondered exactly what advice could I give that would work for almost anyone who wants to lose weight, tone up and stay healthy? Let's talk.

First, my colleague asks me; "So in addition to your exercise routine do you eat a special diet? I am just trying to watch what I eat and pay attention to portion control. I want to feel good when I look in the mirror. I do not think I will ever look like the Statue of David but then again he is dead and I am alive. "

Yes of course, he's right. And, here is the advice I gave him and I'd be glad to share with you today. You see, I eat smoothies with vegetables and fruit, with isolate protein powder, and a lot of homemade soup. I also watch my calories, but not as much as I used to. But let me say this; if you'll cut your calorie intake to 2300 calories per day, walk / jog 3.2 miles per day, then boost that up to 2 walks per day, you'll lose and keep off 35 lbs in 2-months.

I also recommend you cut out wheat products and sodas, no beer or alcohol. Your gut bacteria will change in about 2.5 weeks and you will not crave all the BS processed foods in about 20-30 days. But you have to stay with this plan for at least 60-days before you'll be happy with the results, then once you do get lighter, you can up the exercise and start hitting the weights in about 45-days.

It's not hard stuff, just Google "Super Foods" and only eat those, add turmeric, ginger, garlic, Italian spices, pepper in trade for salt, and organic honey and cinnamon in place of sugar.

Read up on foods that boost testosterone, and add some of those into your diet. Also add Ginseng (Panex), K-2, and Gingko Biloba, fish oil into your supplement routine, get a good B-complex and multivitamin too, add D-3 vitamin until spring.

This works, it's not even rocket science. I also advise that you "Think" yourself thin, and if you are going to hit the weights do that 1-hour before you go to bed, your body will burn fat while you sleep. By the time summer comes you will be sporting a hard body and you will have agility and spring in your step, ready to conquer the world. You'll feel like you are in your early 30s again, it's pretty damn cool.

My acquaintance then asks; "What has been the biggest change you have noticed since you have gotten in better shape?"

Well, good question actually. So, I guess the hardest thing to remember is to stay on your diet. Sometimes, "friends" want to feed you their crappy food, and when you eat it, you will notice you start to lose your six-pack. Most of that processed crap is garbage calories, not doing you any good. It's not that you are going to crave that crappy food after months of eating the good stuff – it's that your friends try to feed you the stuff. Sometimes those foods are more convenient, and you are hungry, but try to get the good stuff in. And once a week go ahead and eat whatever you want, some crappy stuff, but not more than once a week. Please consider all this and think on it.

Costly Prescription Drugs in US

It is truly said that people living in US purchase their prescription drugs on highest rates comparatively all over the world. All the medical facilities they get are quite appropriate but buying the drugs in US is quite impossible. You can not afford drugs and medicines if you have not purchased any health insurance.

Now the question is why prescription drugs are so costly in US? Well the pharmaceutical companies says that medicines are costly because it needs a lot of research and cost incurred in research is distributed to every unit they produce. So it ultimately increases per unit cost. They can not offer cheap drugs. A spokesperson of a pharmaceutical company says "it cost us nearly $ 800 millions to create and develop a new drug".

A survey was conducted by state Public Interest Research Groups in 35 cities of US. According to their survey, uninsured consumers in the Northeast pay the highest prices for 10 drugs followed by the West, South, and Midwest.

Pharmaceutical companies spend lots of money on advertising. Some 10 years back in US, there were no advertisements related to drugs and medicine. And now we see bundles of ads in every minute. One more blame on pharmaceutical companies is that they pay heavy prices to doctors to suggest or write their medicine. All these costs are ultimately to be paid by the end users.

One more reason why drugs are costly in US is that, there are number of insurance companies in US. Definitely if medicines are cheap, then there is no need of any sort of a health insurance company. If medicine costs are reduced, then thousands of the insurance companies have to shut down their business. It is an economic cycle which is running on and on.

Now as the prescription drugs are very costly. How a layman can buy such expensive medicines? For this purpose there are, as mentioned earlier, many insurance companies working in US. In US you can not go without a health insurance. You have to buy it at any cost or you have to avoid medicines. But even then there are millions of people who do not have health insurance. Almost 46 million people below the age of 65 do not have any insurance.

What insurance cost you, depends on many factors like age, health, income, family etc. Most of the insurance companies allow their buyers to pay half the price of the medicine. Most companies and organizations provide insurance to their employees as a benefit. People above 65 or who are disable, or those having low income can avail insurance paid by the government. Over 85 million people in US have insurance paid by the government like Medicare and Medicaid. And over 45 million people have no insurance.

Now what do these 45 million people do when they have to purchase prescription drugs? US citizens having no insurance prefer Canadian pharmaceutical companies. They provide medicines and drugs at very cheap rates. People purchasing from any Canadian company save upto 49% of money as compared to a US company.

People can purchase medicines from a number of online Canadian pharmacies or through their bus services. People can easily order online Canadian pharmacies without leaving their homes. This is one best way to have cheaper medicines while residing in US.

Some US people argue that Canadian pharmacies provide low quality or less effective medicines. But in last few years there are only 1-2 such complaints regarding Canadian products. So if you are short of money, do not panic you can visit online Canadian pharmacy and have a cheap and quality medicine.

3 Reasons Why to Choose Alternative Medicine

There is a simple reason why alternative medicine and healing is preferred by people in countries where alternative medicine is allowed to be practiced.

1. Time to listen
Living in a small village where everyone knows each other can be very convenient, as if there is a problem most people will be aware of it as it can not be easily hidden.

Village people trust each other and if you get sick one day you go to a person that you already know and trust.

The alternative healer in a village is not a foreigner and it feels easier to talk and explain what is wrong with yourself. In a traditional village most people are related to each other anyway and you do not have to look for a far away person treating you.

There is not only one person acting as a healer in a village, usually you have a certain person who is specialized in a certain illness or disease.

The traditional healer will spend time listening to their patients, as time is not an issue, the healer will be able to diagnose the patient more accurately. There is a great advantage that the healer knows both you and your family with all good and bad sides that could influence your disease. The doctor does not need to get to know you and your background.

Much time is spent on dealing with the social reasons for the illness.

2. No Separation
If you live in a village all your life, the last thing you want to do is to be separated from the people you know, love and trust.
Taking you to a hospital would mean talking to doctors and people you never met before and who has no idea about your background and problems.

How on earth can you explain to them what is going on with yourself in just a few minutes. It would also be a disaster to stay in a hospital bed without the comfort of your family and friends.

3. The Belief in Success.
The traditional healer believe that his / her healing power is a gift of God and therefore takes their gift very seriously. They believe strongly that their treatments and remedies will bring the desired effects.

This confidence by the healer will also make the patient confident in being healed which is an important factor in any healing process.

The traditional healer is never doing the healing for money. The person being healed will bring the healer gifts in other forms during and after a successful healing has been done.

The question is, what is alternative complementary medicine. Is the western medicine complementary to the traditional medicine of the other way around.

With this said, there are many times that the western medicine works fantastic in combination with alternative complementary medicine and an open mind for both are greatly needed by any healer or doctor.

Specialty Choice – Take the Medical Specialty Aptitude Test

Ever since you entered the medical school, you have likely been asked many questions about the specialty you will choose. Selecting your medical specialty is a crucial step in your career, so you should learn which specialties are most suited to your natural abilities and personal styles by taking this medical specialty test online.

One of the most difficult parts for medical students is in choosing a specialty. Sometimes the students make a choice only to realize later that they have chosen something else instead of what they are practicing now. Since medical students often make their decisions based upon their rotation experiences, their final choices often turn out to be wrong. If you talk to some practicing physicians, they will tell you about the great difference during a medical school clerkship and the everyday life in the specific specialty. So take a little more care to choose the right medical specialty for you.

Consider the data

40 – 50% of practicing physicians surveyed would pick a different medical specialty if given the chance. 80 percent of medical students in a Glaxo study believed they did not have enough valid information about their talents and options to base a decision of medical specialty.

Every person has a set of specific innate abilities and they must be considered when choosing a specialty. When you choose a specialty, you may end up working in that particular field for the rest of your career, unless you choose to opt for an additional training. It is also critical to understand whether you have the right profile to succeed in the medical career in general or not.

Aptitude Test for Medical Specialties

To determine the field where you will find the most satisfaction serving people, you should consider taking a specially designed aptitude test. Such tests are based upon the behavioral characteristics, personal and lifestyle preferences of the students as well as their hard-wired talents. These tests are quite effective at informing the students of the suitable specialties that are often difficult to assess.

Where to Take the Test?

Taking general career tests is not difficult with the ample options available over the Internet. Even in the medical field, the career options are quite different from one another. You should take a test that is based upon the facts rather than just assumptions. Ensure the test you are taking is specifically designed for medical students and not for all possible careers.

Why Abilities?

Abilities and skills are two different things. Skills are capacities that are acquired through practicing for years whereas abilities are inborn. People are happy and satisfied when they are allowed to use their fundamental, natural abilities. People may practice medicine to become doctors but if they do not have the innate abilities for that, they are more likely to not find their jobs satisfying. When abilities are applied with the jobs, people tend to do their work better. Hence, choose a color : such medical specialty quiz That brings out the abilities in you and help you choose a specialty That fits you the most.

Complementary Medicine in the Modern Age

Students of the modern age are not always necessarily "scholars;" in fact, students are both teachers and patients, alike, who are trying to find holistic and alternative means to traditional healthcare. Complementary medicine is one of the largest growing facets in the modern world, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has begun to take note of its evolutional affects on mainstream medicine.

The interesting aspect of complementary medicine is that it is an umbrella term for numerous marvels of modern medicine. Some of the most innovative healing methods and even ancient healing arts from around the world have been integrated into the field.

Today, treatments with acupuncture, herbal medicine, chelation therapy, chiropractic, homeopathy, and massage therapy, among others, are just some of the diverse therapies available within the scope of complementary medicine.

A few years back, the safe and noninvasive treatment of acupuncture was researched by the National Institutes for Health (NIH). Their findings were promising. Studies demonstrated that acupuncture is effective in pain relief for several health conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia, stroke rehabilitation, and osteoarthritis, among other chronic pain conditions.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) currently has studies underway in homeopathy as well. One of the topics of interest includes the treatment for physical, mental and emotional symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Additional healthcare studies, like massage for the treatment of cancer pain; and herbal medicine, more precisely, mistletoe extract – used in conjunction with chemotherapy as a treatment for solid cancer tumors are ongoing clinical trials.

Often times, CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) therapies like acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic are covered by health insurance; but it is always wise to check with your insurance provider prior to scheduling an appointment.

As more patients are seeking non-invasive and drug-free treatments for common health disorders and conditions, complementary medicine is one of modern society's greatest advancements to the healthcare industry. Color : such color : as, there has been an Increase in Growth in alternative and complementary medicine schools ; including career-training and degree programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine, massage, chiropractic medicine, and integrative medicine courses, among several others.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding complementary medicine schools, let career training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Russian Superstitions

Russians are very superstitious people. They will deny this, but it is true. These superstitions affect my life on a daily basis. Most of the time they are harmless and I go along with them to humor my wife. Sometimes I tease her about them.

New superstitions pop up all the time, as new situations arise in our life. I keep telling her that I need a rulebook for them. Perhaps someday I will codify them in a book.

Russians are raised with these superstitions so they have no need to consult a manual.

Here are some of them. It is by no means an exhaustive list:

1) You can’t whistle in the house or car, as they believe that you are whistling away your money.

At a dinner party at our house, a friend of mine started whistling. My wife silenced him immediately. She explained to him, “You can whistle in your own house, but you can’t whistle in mine. In my house, it’s my money you are whistling away.”

When she first came to America, she would see people standing at intersections holding signs. She asked me what they were doing. I told her they were asking for money. She asked me why. I told her that they had done entirely too much whistling in their house for their own good.

2) If you step on your spouse’s shoe by accident, you have to let the other person step on your shoe, or you will have an argument.

I never tested this superstition. It seemed easier to go along with the remedy than pay the price for violating it.

3) If you leave your house, you cannot go back inside for something you have forgotten, or your trip will result in ‘nothing good,’ as my wife says.

4) If you must go back in to get the forgotten item, you can try to mitigate the bad effects of returning by looking into the mirror at your own reflection for a moment before you leave again.

5) Never demonstrate another’s surgery or wound on your own body with your hand or other means as you are likely to visit that upon yourself.

In the few times I have done this, my wife has tried to remedy this by wiping away the spot where I made the imaginary incision with her hand, blowing on her hand to blow it away to the wind, and covering it with the sign of the cross.

6) Never give a Russian woman an even number of flowers. Even numbers are for the dead. Always give odd numbers. When you order a dozen, or two dozen roses, for her, ask them to throw in an extra one for good luck.

15) Do not shake hands or kiss over the threshold of a door. It forms a bridge that allows the devil or evil spirits from the outside to enter the house this way. When I have done this by mistake, my wife usually pushes me back outside or pulls me inside before greeting me with a kiss at the front door.

16) Before anyone takes a long trip, the whole family sits together silently for a few minutes before the traveler leaves.

17) The truly superstitious have been known to eat ‘lucky’ bus tickets, when the sum of the left three numbers equals the sum of the three numbers on the right.

18) Recently, while preparing to give my infant daughter a bath, the little tyke peed on me while I was taking her clothes off. My wife laughed and said that it was good news. It meant that I would live to dance at my daughter’s wedding!

This list is not exhaustive by any means. Superstitions vary by country and locale. There is a popular Russian television show that travels around the country exploring the unique superstitions of each particular town or village.

Many of the superstitions came from folk tales or fairy stories, Russian Orthodox tradition, or had peasant or agricultural roots. Most Russians are only one or two generations from the farm or village.

At any rate, be aware of the superstitions and try to show some respect for them whether or not you believe in them. Your Russian friends will appreciate it.

Be Careful in Hot Conditions

There are a few factors that will affect how hot you get during work; The temperature, Wind speed, Humidity and radiant heat. If you have high blood pressure or take diuretics you may well be more sensitive to these heat factors.

The body will try to counter these effects by sweating and changing the blood flow. You may also begin to breathe harder. The body's first phase of defense is to pump the blood to the surface of the skin, This will allow your body to give off heat by increasing the skin temperature. Your body also sweats to cool off though this will only be effective if the humidity is low enough for the sweat to evaporate.

If your body gets too hot and over heats then a condition of heat stress will be present. Conditions of heat stress include heat stroke, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat rash and fainting.

Some of the signs and symptoms that you might have heat exhaustion for example will include sweating, Nausea, Weakness, Pale skin, sometimes clammy or flushed. In a situation like this you will need to rest up in a cool place and drink either water or an electrolyte drink, such as a sports drink. If the condition worsens or the person feints then call emergency services.

In situations where body temperatures increase to over 106oF it is likely that the persona has heat stroke. Call Emergency services straight away, then move the person into the shade. Cool the body down with water and fan.

It is important to know what to do in all situations of heat stress, so if you do work outside in the heat then be sure to research thoroughly all the do's and don'ts. You just may save someone's life one day.

Smoking and Cancer

Smoking has been linked to several types of cancer including cancer of the lungs, mouth, throat, stomach, bladder, and colon. It has been a common cause of death amongst people having these types of cancer. When alcohol consumption is coupled with smoking, the risk of developing these types of cancer is very high.

Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer caused by smoking. About one in four smokers will eventually die of lung cancer. Male smokers have a 20% increased risk of developing lung cancer, while female smokers have a 13% increased risk.

Harmful substances make up tobacco smoke. Around 60 of these substances cause cancer. The cancer-causing chemicals are found in the tar, 70% of which stays inside the lungs when a person inhales cigarette smoke. Benzpyrene, a carcinogen found in the tar of cigarette smoke, damages and destroys a gene in the body that is responsible for controlling cancer cell growth. Over time, the chemicals and toxins from cigarette smoke stimulates the lung tissues into developing cancerous cells.

Tumor formation can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are not harmful unless they are very big in size. They develop slowly and do not spread to other tissues. On the other hand, malignant tumors are cancerous and can be fatal if not detected early. Malignant tumor cells reproduce erratically, destroying the surrounding tissues and spreading uncontrollably. The result is metastasis or the spread of cancerous cells to other organs of the body.

There are two types of lung cancer; On-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancers (SCLC). SCLC, the more aggressive type of lung cancer, is found in about 20% of lung cancer cases. This form of lung cancer is strongly related to smoking.

The following are lung cancer symptoms demanding immediate attention and treatment:

* Constant coughing that worsens with time

* Coughing up blood

* Wheezing, shortness of breath, or a hoarse throat

* Constant chest pains

* Massive weight loss and loss of appetite

* Repeated bronchitis or pneumonia

* Swelling in the neck and face areas

Not all cancers are fatal. If detected early, cancerous cells or tumors can be surgically removed and monitored. Treatment will vary on the type of cancer, location, tumor size, and the patient’s general health. Tumors and affected surrounding tissues are often removed by surgery, after which the patient may or may not receive chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

It is important for a recovering cancer patient to change his or her lifestyle dramatically. He or she should never smoke again, whether actively or passively. Harmful substances in food must be avoided, for these can trigger the growth of cancer cells. Friends and family play an important role in supporting the patient acquire a new, healthier lifestyle.

What Is Neonatal Hemochromatosis?

Neonatal hemochromatosis is a condition suffered by newborns. It is a syndrome reflecting severe liver disease that has happened during the fetal period, or when the child is still developing in the mother's womb. Excessive deposition of iron is noted in the liver, often leading to liver disease. It is not the same as genetic or hereditary hemochromatosis, as the collection of symptoms become apparent during the neonatal stage. Genetic hemochromatosis only shows manifestations later in life, around the age of 20-30 years old. Babies born with hemochromatosis often are delivered stillborn, premature, or show signs of intrauterine growth retardation.

The exact cause of neonatal hemochromatosis is not known. Numerous studies and research are being conducted in order to identify the direct cause of the condition. Some research indicates that a fetus can get the condition when the mother acquires a factor that will lead to injury of the perinatal liver. It is believed that neonatal hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive trait with the mother acting as a carrier. A study resulted to a finding that a single mother can give birth to children with the condition even though each child has a different father.

It is not easy to give an adequate prediction or diagnosis that a baby will have neonatal hemochromatosis even with physical manifestations on the mother during gestational age. Mothers often have placental edema, oliguria, disseminated intravascular coagulation, as well as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). These signs are inconclusive as they can also indicate other maternal or fetal condition. Prognosis is poor for babies suffering from the condition. Neonates often survive only for a few hours or several weeks unless medically treated. Liver transplant is often recommended as treatment, but recent advancement in technology and research has made medical support somewhat favorable to treating infants. These medical treatments must first be used before going into drastic measures as some infants respond well to the treatment. Success rate, however, is 10% -20%. The medical treatment is done by giving the infant a cocktail that is prepared with antioxidants and iron chelating agent. Careful monitoring during treatment and after liver transplant is necessary to see if the infant is responding well, or may be suffering from complications.
