Good Sources Of Folic Acid

Folic acid is a vital vitamin for good physical and mental wellbeing, however it is also the B vitamin that people are most likely to be deficient in. In order to ensure that you get the correct amount of folic acid it is important that you eat foods rich in this vitamin. If you are going to take a folic acid supplement you need to take a good B vitamin supplement as well containing the other B vitamins, especially vitamin B12 as folic acid may mask symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.

An excellent source of folic acid are cereals that have been fortified with 100% DV (400 mcg) of folic acid. The National Institute of Health, office of dietary supplements explains the term DV, "DV's are reference numbers developed by the Food and Drug administration (FDA) to help consumers determine if a food contains a lot or a little of a specific nutrient. The DV for folate is 400 micrograms.A food providing 5% of the DV or less is a low source while a food that provides 10-19% of the DV is a good source. A food that provides 20% or more of the DV is high in that nutrient. "

Three ounces of cooked, braised beef liver is an excellent source of folic acid offering 45% DV. The next good sources of folic acid are cowpeas and cereals fortified with 25% DV, both of these sources have a 25% DV. For the cowpeas you will need to have half a cup of immature cowpeas (also known as blackeyes) which have been boiled.

Half a cup of frozen spinach that has been boiled also contains a 25% DV for folic acid and is one of the foods normally recommended to increase your intake of folic acid.

Half a cup of great northern beans that have been boiled, as well as 4 boiled asparagus spears contain a DV of 20% and can also be used to increase your intake of folic acid.

A number of other foods contain a DV between 10 and 15% such as vegetarian baked beans, raw spinach, green peas, broccoli, egg noodles, avocado, peanuts, lettuce, wheat germ, tomato juice and orange juice.

By following a diet that contains plenty of fruit and vegetables, especially the dark green, leafy vegetables as well as taking cereals that have been enriched with folic acid allows you to ensure you are getting enough folic acid in your diet. There are many good sources of folic acid and a large variety of meals can be planned using the sources mentioned above. Have a look at the DV of folic acid or folate on the foods you buy and try to achieve 100% DV daily for maximum benefits.

Dizziness Causes

Many people would say that at some point or often they feel dizzy. It's uncomfortable, and sometimes alarming. Determining dizziness causes can be performing in several types of diagnosis. Dizziness may be a symptom that may be directing to other form of ailment. So it is essential to understand and keep track on the attacks of these dizziness problem.

Dizziness can be caused of psychological, medical, central or neurological, and otological imbalance. And these imbalance can classified into; sensory disturbances – usually loss or imbalance reception of the senses; central or brain disturbances – these can be a dizziness cause by multiple disruptions of blood flow towards the brain, or any other neurological issue; and peripheral imbalance – which points to muscle weakness or diseases.

Dizziness causes a lot of assumption and evaluation. It can be a major or minor issue, a chronic disease or just plainly symptom of hearing imbalance. Most of the dizziness problems as reported is due to hearing problem. Hearing disturbances can be caused by some factors like; psychological (malingering), sudden hearing loss, noise trauma, or even otitis.

Dizziness can be frustrating too, it can also be distracting with every activities. Frequent visit of dizziness should be evaluated and person experiencing it should have a routine checkup. Usually, medical terms of dizziness can be attributed to vertigo, disequilibrium, and pre-syncope. It is also define as a symptom of balance disorder. Nausea, passing out, dark vision is also refer to dizziness. Experiencing dizziness is often attributed also to lack of water in the body, or dehydration.

Crohn’s Disease Activity Index

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the alimentary tract and can affect any part of it, from the mouth to the anus. It typically affects the terminal ileum and well -demarcated areas of the large intestine.

Crohn’s disease activity index (CDAI) is a measure of the progress or lack of it, in patients suffering from Crohn’s disease. It is used for the detection of post-operative recurrence of Crohn’s disease. The equation enumerated below, utilizing eight selected variables, is called Crohn’s Disease Activity Index.

CDAI = 2×1 + 5×2 + 7×3 + 20×4 + 30×5 + 10×6 + 6×7 + (weight factor) 8

Each number in the above equation is multiplied pertains to certain factors.

These factors range from the number of liquid or soft stool that a patient passes to the hematocrit measure. Fluctuations in the weight are also considered to be serious factors influencing the CDAI. The other factors considered in the index are abdominal pain ratings on a scale from 0 to 3. General well-being is also factored in a scale of 0 to 4.The symptoms or findings related to the disease are given due importance. The number of incidences of administration of the specific drug, Lomotil for diarrhea is also a factor considered in the equation. Abnormal mass of a patient constitutes yet another parameter for calculating the activity index.

Hematocrit is an important measure of both the number and size of red blood corpuscles. The normal count in males is supposed to be 47 whereas females generally have a hematocrit value of 42.

Generally speaking, CDAI scores below 150 indicate a better prognosis than higher scores. Index values of 150 and below are associated with inactive disease, values above that indicate active disease, and values above 450 are seen with extremely severe disease. Crohn’s disease activity index may identify patients in remission. However, many researchers use a ‘subjective value’ of 200 to 250.

CDAI is used to gauge only the progress by comparing the readings from one week to the next and determine if the patient of Crohn’s disease is getting better or worse. Patients of the disease have to use the CDAI on a regular basis and view it as a personal gauge to measure progress.

Florida's New Low-Cost Health Insurance Plans

Recently, a bill was signed in Florida that would help establish the creation of a low cost health insurance plan for Florida residents.

Unfortunately, amid all the fanfare, very few people stopped to take a close look at what was actually being proposed. Permit me to enlighten you on some of the more important aspects of the proposed plan.

First of all, it is not a mandated health insurance plan. In other words, an insurance carrier would have to decide if they even want to create a plan to sell. This is NOT A PLAN THAT THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS PROVIDING. Please understand that Florida is in the midst of an extreme budget crunch and is not spending a single dime on this plan. Governor Crist has made that very clear. The cooperation of the health insurance industry will be required to make this work. As of now, there are no plans available.

Second, this is not a major medical plan. If you have a medical crisis and this is your only health insurance, you are in a lot of trouble. It is a minimal plan with a few doctor visits, a physical, perhaps some generic prescription coverage (the drugs you already get in Wal-Mart for $ 4) and a few other benefits. Surely, none of you ever thought that you would get a complete major medical plan for $ 150 a month.

Next, the plan is for someone who has had no health insurance for six months. This means that in their infinite wisdom, Florida's representatives decided that if you lose your job and can not afford your COBRA insurance, they want you to be without any health insurance at all for at least six months. We have a real brain trust in Tallahassee do not we.

Now, you are really going to love this. The plans are going to sell for about $ 150 (projected price but who knows) and give you the most minimal of benefits. But that is the cost for an individual. A family will be much more. As a matter of fact, if you have a healthy family, a traditional major medical plan with real benefits might be less expensive.

For example, at FLQUOTE a Florida Health Insurance website a 40 year old male in Pasco County can get an excellent PPO plan for about $ 130 a month. We are talking about a complete multi-million dollar, major medical plan. Not a minimal plan.

Who will this plan help?

I am still trying to figure that out. This is supposed to help those of you who can not get health insurance. But, it will not pay for your expensive brand name prescriptions; it will not cover extensive hospitalization or expensive testing procedures. For those of you who think that dental coverage is part of health insurance – it is not. It will not cover any dental or vision costs.

If you are poor, you are much better off on Medicaid. If you are medically qualified, you will get far more coverage for your money with a traditional health insurance plan.

Have politicians created a created a, half-way measure to pander to the voters? Is it "better than nothing"? If you are paying $ 1,800 a year for a few office visits, you have to wonder if it is even worth it.

If you are holding your breath for government sponsored health insurance, chances are you will turn blue and collapse first.

You do have alternatives. There are decent low cost plans available to Florida residents. There are also guaranteed issue plans with no medical questions that are similar to the plans being proposed. You can find guaranteed issue health insurance plans online.

Clearly, it will be interesting to see if this new proposal yields any positive change or does it become an exercise in futility.

If you are interested in learning more about low cost health insurance in Florida, you can go to Affordable Florida Health Insurance Plans. To find out more about health insurance plans that have no medical requirements, go to Guaranteed Issue Health Insurance.

Cystic Acne Treatment – Clearing The Worst Types Of Pimples

Many people suffer from acne at one time or another, many during their adolescent years or even as adults. Whenever acne shows up, it’s no fun. Cystic Acne is among the most severe forms of this skin condition, characterized by the large red cysts that appear on the skin. To find the best cystic acne treatment it is important to understand what causes the outbreaks and how diet, living conditions and your gender and age figure in to the picture.

Some of the factors that lead to this skin condition are stress, overactive skin oil glands, fluctuations in hormones, the accumulation of dead skin cells and diet. Given the many different factors that can lead to acne, the cystic acne treatment that is most effective will be one that addresses each of these conditions as they apply to you, if not all of them.

Acne develops as a result of the skin pores becoming clogged with dead skin cells, oils or other materials. Bacteria build up and the body’s immune response causes inflammation with redness, swelling and pain. Cystic pustules are characterized by red, large (5 mm diameter) lumps that are often painful and unsightly.

Cystic Acne Treatment

A common approach to curing this acne is to start with home remedies and work your way up if necessary to medicines or treatments recommended by your doctor or dermatologist.

Below are several home based cystic acne treatment options that you can try…

Apple Cider Vinegar

Drink a Mix of 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with 8-10 oz. twice per day.

After washing face with a neutral pH soap, dab apple cider vinegar on affected areas and allow to dry. Do this once each morning and evening. It is the anti-bacterial properties of apple cider vinegar which, as an cystic acne treatment, have helped many control the outbreaks.

Turmeric

The anti-bacterial properties of turmeric have also been known to help reduce the appearance of acne. Try this cystic acne treatment by mixing the following ingredients below and drink before bedtime.

1 tsp Turmeric

1/4 tsp Cinnamon

1 c Hot Water

1 tsp Honey (to taste)

2-3 tbsp milk (to taste)

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains an ingredient called terpinen that has antimicrobial properties. Applying a 5% solution to acne lesions has been a popular cystic acne treatment and has helped many with a reduction of inflamed and non-inflamed acne.

Treatment Medications

There are a variety of over-the-counter products you can try for your cystic acne treatment. Their effectiveness will depend on the severity of the acne and how well your body reacts to the medications. Many of these contain Benzoyl Peroxide as the active ingredient. Before starting any over-the-counter cystic acne treatment be sure to read all the information and possible side effects associated with the over-the-counter medications.

For more severe cases, a dermatologist can prescribe antibiotics or other medications available only through prescription. Often these medications will have side effects that you will want to be aware of before starting them. Be sure to have your doctor or dermatologist explain all known side effects before starting any prescribed medical cystic acne treatment.

Antidepressant Side Effects

MAOIs hold the potential to induce life-threatening problems. The Side Effects associated with its use are hypertensive crisis, rapid heartbeat, blood cell problems, insomnia, dizziness, headache, fluid retention, and loss of appetite. It therefore cannot be used in patients of congestive cardiac failure or in those with a history of liver disease. It is unsafe for those who are hypersensitive to its ingredients.

Though the type of Side Effects experienced by the patient due to TCAs or MAOIs are many times similar, the frequency of these Side Effects is much less in the case of TCAs. Thus, TCAs enjoy a better rate of acceptance by the patients. The potential Side Effects of TCAs are allergic reactions, blood cell problems, blurred vision, dry mouth, weakness, fatigue, weight gain, constipation, difficulty with urination, sexual dysfunction, sweating, muscle twitches, rash, dizziness, tremors, ECG abnormalities, seizures, stroke, and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (with amoxapine). The secondary amine TCAs (desipramine and nortriptyline) are generally better tolerated than tertiary amine TCAs.

The SSRIs are associated with nausea, anorexia, anxiety, agitation, insomnia, headache, dizziness, tremor somnolence, sweating, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, and sexual dysfunction as the general Side Effects. The sexual Side Effects of SSRIs often become the reason for its desired discontinuation.

The currently available SNRIs (desipramine, duloxetine, nefazodone, and venlafaxine) keep both serotonin and norepinephrine at the right level to alleviate depressive symptoms. The Side Effects associated with the use of nefazodone include dry mouth, constipation, and somnolence. Venlafaxine has significant anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary hesitancy, and constipation) and induces sedation. Other Side Effects observed with its use are hypertension, agitation, tremor, sweating, headache, nausea and sleep disturbances. It has potential withdrawal effects.

The drug bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR) is contraindicated in patients with seizure disorder or a history of anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Agitation, tremor, insomnia, decreased appetite, GI upset and psychoses are the bupropion-induced common Side Effects. The most common adverse effects of mirtazapine (a tetracyclic Antidepressant) include increased appetite, weight gain, lethargy and dizziness.

The most commonly associated Side Effects with the use of St. John’s wort (a natural Antidepressant) include fatigue, sedation, restlessness, anxiety, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, gastrointestinal symptoms, and skin reactions. Studies have reported that the rates of adverse events with St. John’s wort are comparable to those with a placebo.

Alcohol and Other Drugs (A & OD) At Work – Myths and Realities

Alcohol and cannabis use has declined; as has general illicit drug use in the community, according to the latest research. But this same research indicates individual usages in tighter demographics of society are on the increase. Some other surprising revelations were made by Professor Steve Allsop, Director of the National Drug Research Institute (Australia) at the Perth Work Safe Forum 2009.

WORKPLACE CONSIDERATIONS

Drug Testing

Prof. Allsop did not seem to be an advocate of drug testing being that urine testing is now being found not as reliable a predictor for impairment as was once assumed; urine testing only confirms metabolites –that an employee has or has not 'used' sometime in the measurable past.

Urine testing is also considered invasive. Other factors like large weight loss during the testing period can skew results, particularly regarding cannabinoids where fatty deposits are secreted in abnormally high volumes during these and other times.

Saliva testing was favoured because it predicts impairment better, but with the stated acknowledgement that cannabis use is not easily detected because it is not water soluble – only very recent use will be detected.

According to Prof. Allsop, "drug testing is not [the] magic bullet" some might think it is. In fact, there is,

"No strong evidence from controlled studies that drug testing reduces drug problems."

A & OD Usage Patterns & Potential Workplace Impacts

Regular users of A & OD appear to present less cause for concern for employers and authorities as usage is managed more responsibly than say for the binge user – the concern for this demographic is the long term health consequences of prolonged use.

Workplace A & OD programs should therefore target binge usage toward intoxication, and secondarily, look to identify and support those A & OD dependents' with Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and the like. Dependence, as we already know, tends – though not always – to show up in employees' work performance.

Blending A & OD Strategies with Other Programs / Systems

A & OD strategies carry an obvious stigma. To de-stigmatise the proactive steps companies should take, the strategies can be melded covertly into other programs and systems to protect, and provide for, their success and also make them more naturally attractive for those who might partake in (and need) them.
Poorly designed and implemented, though well intended, strategies can actually make matters worse.

The "Golden Triangle" (in Understanding Drug Issues)

Holistic views on A & OD matters and issues are best facilitated via a tripartite view considering the individual (health, gender, age etc), the drug (eg pharmacology, amount, how often etc), and the environment (time, place etc).

THREE Generally Interesting A & OD Myths ( backed by Research)

1. MYTH: Cannabis grown these days is significantly higher in active THC than generations past and is therefore significantly more potent. FACT: There is evidence to suggest THC levels are higher but not always significantly higher. Growing methods may enhance potency.

2. MYTH: Illicit drug use is on the increase. FACT: Generally this is not so, except in the cases of ecstasy and amphetamine. Cannabis usage has declined markedly (38 percent drop) over a very short space of time. Those using drugs, however, are using more and more often, and this is the key societal concern presently (especially amongst young people; though interestingly fewer young people overall are using A & OD as compared with 15 years ago).

3. MYTH: All drink drivers are dangerous . FACT: Evidence suggests it's not really the regular ( "drip, drip") drinker who's most prone to cause mayhem on the roads. It is the younger driver who's both inexperienced in driving and driving (and who mixes the two) that research suggests is the biggest concern.

INTERESTING FACT: Three in four males used to smoke tobacco. That figure is now less than 20 percent .

CONCLUDING NOTE: I'd have preferred to reference the quotes herein, however, Prof. Allsop's paper is not yet available online and was not included as part of the package from the Forum.

All About Retail Medicine

Have you ever wondered why malls are so successful especially around the Christmastime? The answer is, malls come as a blessing if you need several items as they offer an assortment of varied type of items all under one roof. The mall idea has been largely taken by the hospitals who offers convenience to clientele through retail within the hospital itself. This is indeed the secret of the successful concept of retail medicine. And, in recent tight economic times, when hospitals are faced with the challenge of increasing revenue retail medicine has offered them with the desired O2 in order to survive.

The typical concept of retail medicine ideally refers to the health care related products which are usually offered by the hospital, which are not covered by insurance. Reports unveil that the, “average hospital makes $500,000 annually from retail such as gift and coffee shops, but has the potential of $5 million to $15 million annually with the extended retail medicine. The return on investment is higher in retail than in reimbursed health care, with 15 percent to 20 percent returns in retail, compared with 2 percent to 3 percent return in

Here is the list of the different types of retail reimbursed health care.”

Due to this ever growing numbers now several hospitals are catching on the concept of retail medicine.

Services in healthcare settings:

o catering services

o retail clinics

o optical and contact lenses stores

o dental and orthodontic services

o hearing services

o pharmacy and supplement needs

o healthy food markets

o prosthetics services

o specialty cancer shops

o new mom shops

o cosmetic surgery centers

o health library and book stores and many more…

The retail healthcare industry is nowadays being estimated at$500 billion in revenues and is also projected to reach at $1 trillion dollars. The retail healthcare industry has an immense future and is expected to grow further. Here comes the million dollar question “what should we be asking as you put together a hospital retail strategy?” The answer is a razor-sharp concentration on the consumer. The marketing department for the retail healthcare should focus on every detail from store design to convenient placement of the stores within the hospital to add value to your consumers.

Beauty Givers – Vitamins

Have you ever walked along the street or in a crowded mall and suddenly noticed a woman with all the right ingredients for beauty – fine facial features, good bones, long thick eyelashes, adequate height and straight posture – but who didn’t quite measure up to her potential? Looking a bit closer, you notice that her skin is drab and sallow, she has no sparkle in her eyes, and her hair is brittle – looking. Chances are that poor nutrition is stealing than woman’s beauty.

Beauty Givers

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A is a versatile vitamin that affects nearly every tissue in the body. Scientists have known for a long time that the body needs “A” for normal growth and repair of epithelial cells, which line the respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts and form the outer layer of skin.

Too little of “A” leaves your skin dry and scaly and can lead to premature aging of the skin. Taken internally, it can help clear up acne; applied externally, it promotes the growth of healthy epidermal cells and also smooths dry, flaky skin. Foods rich in vitamin “A” include carrots, green and yellow vegetables, avocados, sweet potatoes, apricots, milk, eggs, fish, fish liver oil, liver, peaches, prunes and turnip greens.

Don’t go overboard with “A”. Unlike most other vitamins, which are water – soluble, “A” is stored by the body, primarily in the liver, and can build up to toxic levels when taken in excess. If you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, you shouldn’t need any supplements.

Vitamin B1 – Thiamine:

Thiamine help prevent such skin disorders as shingles and eczema, as well as digestive disturbances, fatigue and nervousness. Thiamine is present in brown rice, wheat germ, bran, beef, pork, lamb, mushrooms, soybeans, brewer’s yeast, peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, egg yolk and milk. Be careful when cooking foods rich in thiamine; it is heat – sensitive, and cooking can damage it.

Vitamin B3 – Niacin:

Niacin improves blood circulation and promotes organ tissue health, especially in the liver, kidneys, heart and brain, and the muscles, too. It assists in maintaining smooth skin that’s soft and free oil inflammation and dermatitis. Lean meat, poultry, seafood, peanuts, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, brown rise, organ meats and rhubarb are all rich in niacin.

Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)

Pantothenic acid simulates the production of adrenal hormones, which are crucial to healthy skin, it also protects against cellular damage caused by excessive sunlight radiation, therefore aiding in the prevention of premature aging and wrinkles.

Pantothenic acid is present in whole grains, rice, egg yolks, beef, cauliflower, yeast, peanuts and organ meats.

Vitamin B6 – Pyridoxine

B6 Helps control depression, sleeplessness, nervousness and irritability by maintaining the sodium – potassium balance in the body and regulating body chemistry. Women taking birth control pills, which can upset this balance, may need extra B6.

Equally important is B6’s role in the metabolism of skin tissue, which helps prevent dermatitis, eczema, sore lips and dry skin.

Recent evidence suggest that adequate intake of B6 during pregnancy can prevent stretch marks after childbirth.

Vitamin B13 – Biotin

Because of its marvelous effects on skin and hair, biotin is known as the “beauty vitamin.” It helps protect against dry skin conditions, scaliness, abnormal skin coloring, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and Leiner’s disease, an oily rash that sometimes afflicts infants. Biotin is found in brewer’s yeast, eggs, nuts, whole grains, legumes, brown rice, sardines, milk and cottage cheese.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C has received a lot of press these days because of the number of important functions it affects in the body. Topping the list is its component of the connective tissue that holds the body cells – and the body – together. Because collagen is necessary for wounds to heal, maintaining and adequate level of “C” is particularly important during times of illness. It also plays an important role in skin pigmentation.

Current research shows evidence that external application of “C” improves the function of skin capillaries and helps dissipate small blood clots. Vitamin C is present in almost any fresh fruit or vegetable and rose – hip tea.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known for its importance in the production and maintenance of healthy bones, teeth, nerves, skin and heart; it may also help fight acne. It can be found in eggs, bone meal, milk, fish, fruits, vegetables, cottage cheese, fish – liver oils and sunshine.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E’s anti – oxidant properties aid in the production of new cells and in the regeneration of the skin. It plays an important role in preventing scars and promoting healing. Those same qualities en “E” may also help keep skin smooth by delaying the aging process. It relieves the itchiness of dry, aging skin when applied externally. You can find vitamin “E” in eggs, green leafy vegetables, corn, wheat germ, vegetable oils, asparagus, yeast, whole grains and mussels.

Vitamin F (Unsaturated fatty acids)

Vitamin F supplies the fat essential to every cell of the body. It can prevent skin disorders including eczema, acne and dry skin. You can find unsaturated fats in wheat germ, vegetable oils, cod – liver oil and nuts.

How To Choose A Personal Medical Alarm System

There are a large number of medical alarm system providers offering similar systems so how do you decide which medical alarm is right for you?

Find out about the monthly fees and examine the contract.

The monthly monitoring fees are the major cost so check this out first. The monthly fee is charged to have your alarm equipment monitored 24 hours a day by a team of response operators trained to handle emergency calls. The monitoring fees range from about $ 20 to $ 75 per month. The installation fee ranges for $ 0 to $ 100. Most medical alarm companies will rent the equipment to you for free for as long as you need it. Look for a company that uses a month-to-month agreement with no cancellation or termination fees.

Choose a medical alarm monitoring service that uses live operators.

Make sure live operators are employed to deal with calls at the monitoring center and not a phone response or voicemail system that would cause delays. Ask about the speed of response to calls.

Find out about the operator training process.

You want qualified people to assist you when you make a call. Ask what type of training is provided and how long staff spend training before going on the job. Typically 4 to 8 weeks of training is provided.

Get an easy-to-use medical alert unit.

The base unit and the wireless transmitter should be easy to use with large illuminated buttons. Make sure the units chosen are suitable for your needs. Find out over what distance the transmitter can communicate with the console ie will the system work if you are outside.

Get a base unit with a battery backup .

In case the mains power is out there must be a battery backup so that the base unit continues to operate. This is important especially as accidents are more likely to occur if it is dark inside the house.

Test your medical alarm unit.

You should test your medical alarm as soon as you receive it. See how long it takes for someone to respond to your call, how clear it sounds and how far away from the base unit the transmitter will still work.

Does the system automatically self-test?

Some systems are set up so that the base unit can send a signal to the monitoring center every week to test that the medical alert system is still connected and working.

Go for a trial period.

Insist on a 30-day risk-free trial period to give you the opportunity to try a medical alert system.

Check that the equipment is reliable.

Make use of a trial period to check the reliability of the equipment and the longer-term performance of the monitoring center.

Find out how long the monitoring service has been in business.

Dealing with a medical alarm company that has only just entered the business increases your risk.

Do you want to use a provider that has its own monitoring center?

Many smaller providers outsource the medical alert monitoring because of the expense of running their own facilities. This raises questions about quality of service and management control and evaluation.

Do not just go for the cheapest.
You need to use a monitoring center that has the resources to provide you with a safe and secure service. Phone a selection of medical alarm system providers and question them about their services.

Types of Bacteria

Many of us think that bacteria are organisms with no benefits at all and actually bring harm and diseases. Partly that is true. However, their benefits are also incomparable to other things. This is the reason why different types of bacteria are either divided into harmful or beneficial.

Beneficial types of bacteria include; brevibacterium which provides carbon during fermentation and also helps in complexity and acidity in beer, Pseudomonas Syringe that is used for formation of frost and it’s normally found in grass and leaves, Caulobacter Crescentus used in making natural and non toxic adhesive.

Harmful ones on the other hand includes; Streptococcus bacteria strep throat and pneumonia. Group A and B of streptococcus bacteria that causes scarlet fever, rheumatic fever and problems in female reproductive system. Generally, this organisms are classified into three depending on their shape. Nevertheless, some do not have different shapes and therefore a bit difficult to classify them according to shape. However, the major classes are rod shaped, sphere shaped and spiral shaped.

As per scientists, different types of bacteria are classified according to the phyla that in turn corresponds to various species of bacteria or according to the environment they live in. On the other hand, the Gram staining method classifies them into two types i.e Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. They’re also classified according to their growth and reproduction. Some bacteria require oxygen for their survival while others do not. When the new super bonding glues first came out, they were hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. Until someone got their hand stuck to the breadbox.

Super Glue is indeed great stuff, and certainly can create a secure bond. But when that bond is between your fingers and something else, or the glue is a puddle on your kitchen counter, a wet paper towel is not going to get you very far, because it will be stuck to it, too.

If you're going to have a tube of Crazy Glue in the house, the smartest thing you can ever do is to buy the solvent at the same time. It's just the nature of Man, that sooner or later someone will have even a small accident that is only a drip or spot, but which could turn into a major problem if they can not get it cleaned up.

If you do not have the solvent, or do not know where to find it, here are a few tips you can try. Many emergency hotlines will recommend using vegetable oil for skin-to-skin bonding of fingers. This has mixed success.

Because the active ingredient in Crazy Glue and other super bonders is cyanoacrylics, what you really need is 100% acetone. While some fingernail polish does contain this, it's not usually in the strength needed to break the bond. However, for something like a spill or drops on a surface like a countertop, if you pour the nail polish on and let it sit for 15-30 minutes, it may do the trick. Otherwise, you should try a hardware store for the acetone.

Some users report successful removal with lighter fluid. Keep in mind though, that anything of a chemical nature can damage the item with the glue on it. Test a hidden or small area of material or surfaces with the glue on it, and wash hands immediately after having it removed from your skin.

Death by a Thousand Cuts

Capital punishment has been used for thousands of years and is or was practiced all over the world. A few of the past methods were quick and merciful. Most were not. Death by a thousand cuts is among the most horrific.

Also translated as slow slicing, lingering death, and slow process, the true name for this ancient Chinese style of execution is Lingchi. The term was derived from a classical description of ascending a mountain slowly.

Lingchi’s use as a form of execution began in China around the year 900 and continued until its abolition in 1905. Reserved for crimes considered particularly severe, such as treason and killing one’s parents, the process entailed slowly slicing off chunks of the condemned person’s flesh. Execution normally took place in a public area, where the condemned would be tied to a wooden frame or cross beside a table holding a basket of razor-sharp knives covered by a cloth. Each knife bore the marking for a particular part of the body. The executioner would reach beneath the cloth and pull out a knife. He would then slice the area designated by the knife’s inscription. The torture came to a merciful end only when the executioner pulled the knife with the marking for the heart.

This method appears to have been later changed to a more deliberate procedure, using a specific sequence of slicing and only one knife.

In later years large amounts of opium would first be given to the accused, although it is unclear as to whether this was an act of mercy or to prevent fainting and prolong torture. The condemned fortunate enough to come from wealthy families could offer the executioner a bribe to hasten death. For less serious crimes, the executioner would first slice the victim’s throat. The slicing away of flesh then became symbolic rather than torturous.

To the condemned, Lingchi was physical and psychological torture, as well as publicly humiliating. The principle behind the slicing of flesh lay in the spiritual belief that the victim’s body would not be intact in the afterlife. For the Chinese of that time, this may have been more horrifying than the actual torture.

In 1895, Sir Henry Norman witnessed a Lingchi execution. In The People and Politics of the Far East, Norman wrote that the executioner sliced off pieces by “grasping handfuls from the fleshy parts of the body, such as the thighs and the breasts”. He went on to state that “then the limbs are cut off piecemeal at the wrists and the ankles, the elbows and knees, the shoulders and hip. Finally the victim is stabbed in the heart and his head cut off”.

In 1904, in a public square in Beijing, China, accused murderer Wan Weiqin was put to death by a thousand cuts in front of a crowd of onlookers. He is among the last to have suffered this form of capital punishment.
