A number of states have already passed laws requiring hospitals to disclose medical and nursing errors to patients or their next of kin. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations has instituted the post incident disclosure requirement as a standard of care in administrative policy. Although it is nice to see a trend away from covering up medical blunders, how does this help prevent them? What about disclosing conditions that are likely to cause injury such as a severe nursing shortage on a particular unit? Are there no "truth-in-advertising" laws that require full disclosure if the hospital administration knows in advance that it can not provide services in accordance with its representations?

Notwithstanding the fact that a full staff is no guarantee against mistakes, an unsafe staffing level is the most visible indicator of general deterioration in the quality of care. The following is a partial list of problems arising out of not having enough nurses on duty:

Patient calls for assistance remain unanswered;

Bedsores;

Medication errors;

Failure to follow physicians orders;

"

This well known institution does provide state-of-the-art technology and when the units are fully staffed they are usually well run. However, there have been many instances of unsafe staffing levels in all of the critical areas, regular floors and the labor and delivery unit. Additionally, the hospital employs a staffing coordinator who posts the staffing schedules two months in advance. Therefore, when a severe shortage exists for any shift the hospital administration knew about it two months earlier. Yet the advertisement makes the reader believe the best possible care is being provided and consumers are unaware that there is a problem.

Since the quality of care as advertised can only be upheld with a full compliment of nursing staff, severe shortages that were known in advance without disclosing the consequential increased risk of iatrogenic complications compromises the patient's safety and robs him / her of the opportunity to avoid the injury. Furthermore, advertising extolling the high quality of care in the face of such known staffing shortages is tantamount to misrepresentation.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, if all hospitals were required to give full disclosure to the public of dangerous conditions such as any units for which their nurses filed an unsafe staffing report, the patient's family members would have the opportunity to take steps to protect their loved ones. Moreover, the requirement for such disclosure would motivate hospital management personnel to correct existing hospital hazards and prevent new ones. I'm always searching for a better cold sore treatment. I have many good friends at Mayo who I've partnered with for research purposes over the past 33 years. If a blister does form, this cold sore treatment still works great for providing blessed comfort. Because it does slow down metabolism, it also will slow down the healing of your cold sores. Best not to use it as much during the healing phase of your cold sores as a cold sore treatment.

A fishing buddy of mine – a Mayo doctor – while on an outing on the Mississippi, revealed his secret cold sore treatment.

His cold sore treatment involves the use of lemon balm tea.

These tea bags can be found for cheap anywhere you find specialty teas. If the lemon balm is not "stand alone" but in a blend with other herbs, that will usually be just fine too – as long as lemon balm is the primary.

Dr. W. explained that he discovered lemon balm herb has anti-viral properties and is a natural cold sore treatment. He took a 16 – 20 ounce container of bottled water. He then brewed a strong batch of lemon balm tea using one tea bag per 4 ounces – then froze the tea bags – using these in place of the plain ice cold sore treatment.

You get the comforting effect of ice plus, as the tea-bag melts, the application of the anti-viral properties of lemon balm. He stored the tea back in the original bottles for convenience and further cold sore treatment.

Additionally, Dr. W. – to supercharge this cold sore treatment – would sip the lemon balm tea and apply the tea liquid to the cold sores with a cotton ball between lemon balm ice sessions.

If you're the rare person who gets cold sores inside the mouth, you'll find they are very difficult to deal with. This may be exactly the cold sore treatment for you. Use the lemon balm tea as a mouthwash, then swallow for an additional boost. Listerine has worked well as a cold sore treatment, both in the mouth and applied externally, but it stings like crazy.

I also found that freezing the tea and sucking on the lemon balm ice chips is very effective and comforting as an in-the-mouth cold sore treatment.

I tried his cold sore treatment and it worked great for my family too, back when we used to get cold sores frequently. Quite a vast improvement on the old ice method.

This cold sore treatment, using lemon balm frozen tea bags, is a much better choice than plain ice during the healing stages of your cold sores. Although you are slowing metabolism, you are also killing many viruses with this cold sore treatment.

There are many other reported highly effective cold sore treatment methods that you can try. These include tea tree oil, dmso, olive leaf oil, lysine, zinc, yogurt, aloe vera and more. Lysine and zinc do not work well applied directly because the size of their molecules are too large for effective absorption. Lysine and zinc are better used as internal support supplements.

We have tested every over-the-counter cold sore treatment – at least all that we could find. We found they are great for comfort but none of them did anything to actually kill the virus or speed healing.

Keep in mind that the best and most effective cold sore treatment will be topical – directly applied – for any open surface lesion like a cold sore.

– Your diet can put you at risk of gallstones. Diets that are high in fat and cholesterol increase the chances of getting gallstones.

– Other risk factors include being overweight, your genetics and rapid weight loss.

Gallstones can form in two ways: You can either develop one big gallstone, which tends to be very painful and needs treatment, or you can develop lots of tiny little ones, some as small as a grain of sand. A lot of small gallstones can have the same effect as one big one but if you have a few tiny ones

then they can pass out of your body without you knowing that you had them. These are called silent gallstones because they are small and un-noticeable.

If possible it is always better to prevent rather than cure. So looking at the risk factors above, two of the easiest ways in which you can help prevent the formation of gallstones are:

1/ Decrease the amount of fat and cholesterol in your diet.

2/ keep your body weight under control.

If you can do these then it will help prevent gallstones but if you do get them then gallstone treatment usually involves either removing the gallbladder or going through an oral dissolution therapy. This is where you take drugs which are made up of things that are naturally in bile. These drugs are taken to help break down the stones however treatment this way can take months and in some cases years.

For stroke survivor’s who love to play golf, those so-called physical limitations aren’t as pronounced as one would imagine.

Playing Golf Again is a Real Possibility

Except in the worst of cases, the only thing that keeps most stroke survivors from getting back onto the golf course is the assumption they can’t do it. That assumption is wrong in so many ways. Will their golf game be as proficient as it was before the stroke? Probably not, but everything in life changes after medical trauma. The reality is golf courses aren’t going anywhere and any golfer who wants to golf belongs on the golf course. That includes stoke victims who love the game.

It only takes three things to make it happen. First, the person affected by the stroke has to believe they can do it. Second, they need to accept certain limitations and learn to play within themselves. Finally, the stroke victim needs to minimize expectations and maximize the joy that comes from being out on a golf course instead of laying in a bed feeling disabled.

The walking and swinging of a club help to move all the right muscles and bring balance and coordination back.

As far as mental and emotional issues are concerned, there is nothing that revitalizes the spirit and soul more than overcoming impossible odds to achieve something important. If a golfer loves to golf, then learning to do it again under a different set of circumstances is an accomplishment that should bring a great sense of pride to a disabled golfer. In many cases, depression is actually a bigger threat to one’s well-being than another stroke. By going out there on the golf course and proving they are still a player, the afflicted individual won’t feel so afflicted anymore.

Finally, there is great value is participating in a social activity for a stroke survivor who has been hospitalized and/or confined to the home for a period of time. The chance to get out among friends and golfing buddies serves to make the person feel they are still a part of life here on this planet.

Exercises Designed to Make Golfing Easier for the Stroke Victim

While contemplating that first post-stroke round of golf, there are several exercises that can help reestablish stamina, balance and coordination. Walking is a must. Even cart riders will log distance during a round of golf. By getting out each day for a walk, it will improve endurance on the golf course. For balance and coordination, doctors recommend sitting on a stability ball but for those affected by stroke, a physical therapist should be close by unless one has progressed. By doing this exercise for just a few minutes everyday, one’s balance and ability to control their arms and legs will show marked improvement over time. A more sensible exercise at home would involve use of a chair. While the person affected by the stroke stands in a corner of a room, they hold on the back of the chair and practice moving hips forward and back and from side to side. It can help immensely as even if a cart is used, as the walking can tire out the weakened leg quickly at times.

The golfing world is well-aware that some stroke victims love the game of golf. Another way golf is made easier for stroke victims is the process of making them feel normal. Disabled golfers are often reluctant to play golf with healthy people for fear of slowing the group down.
