The Lidcombe Programme which originated from a suburb near Sydney, Australia of the same name is a special treatment program developed for the cause of stuttering children. The programme which originally began in Australia has received world-wide recognition because of the effectiveness of the treatment. It was developed by Professor Mark Onslow as a behavioral treatment to help stuttering children recuperate from their problem.

The first step for healthy weight loss is to create some sort of weight loss plan.

I know that sounded a little vague, but your weight loss plan does NOT have to be something that only NASA could understand or approve.

YOUR weight loss plan should include such simple things as what activities (exercise) you are going to indulge in, when, where, and so on. You will want to outline your goals, both long term and short term goals You will definitely need to outline what your strategy will be for nutrition … notice I DID NOT say "diet"!

Why have a formal, or at least semi-formal, weight loss plan?

It has long been known to those who are successful in business, sports, entertainment, motivation, and other areas, that one way to improve your chances of success is to sit down and write out where you are, where you want to be, and how you are going to get there.

It is easier to plan for losing weight, or any other goal related activity, if there exists a clear picture of starting points, ending points, and how you intend to move from one point to the other. It is very easy to start a weight loss program or any other activity with intense motivation and a flurry of lofty plans only to lose site of the objective or to be led down unproductive paths by daily activities and the blurring effect of time.

Here are a few tips to consider when putting together YOUR personal weight loss plan:

1. Make your goals realistic:

Wanting to weigh what you weighed in high school is, for most of us at least, unrealistic. Using some movie star's weight or a relative's weight as your goal is also possibly detrimental to actually accomplishing effective weight loss. Each of those people arrived at THEIR weight by a combination of genetics, diet, and exercise which may not apply to you at all!

Most people do not realize that a healthy weight loss program should, for most people, result in a weight loss of only a pound or so a week. To many who have been striving for years to lose weight, this may seem a depressing statement. However, let me put it in perspective.

I have a close friend who was so desperate to lose weight that she opted for gastric bypass surgery. She weighed 340 lbs at the time of the surgery. When the doctor was briefing her on what to expect, she learned that even with surgical intervention, she would probably only lose about 70 lbs in her first year. That works out to 1.35 lbs a week, which would be a healthy weight loss that most people could achieve through a combination of physical activity and proper nutrition. The doctor also informed my friend that she would continue to lose weight over the following years until she reached some new level which would be determined by genetics, nutrition, and activity. This is the same expectation that anyone bypassing the bypass and opting for a healthy weight loss program could expect.

Finally, unrealistic weight loss goals insure failure, while an average of a pound a week over a period of a year is relatively easy to attain with motivation and effort.

2. Do not focus on weight loss:

I know that sounds strange since your goal IS weight loss, but it is easy to see failure if you are only looking for weight loss. For example, people's weight fluctuates from day to day and even within the day itself. A temporary setback where weight is regained becomes inflated if viewed against the background of only weight loss. However, if your goal is to do the things which are going to make you healthy, for example, then those few days of overeating at Thanksgiving may be more excusable in your own heart if you know that you have been taking your walks, or have cut your use of sugar, or are still taking action in some other form.

This is something that should be considered in your weight loss plan. How are you going to make your life better overall? How many ways can you approach "weight loss"? Do not make it your goal to lose so many pounds this week. Rather, set a goal to walk so many minutes, lift so many pounds, garden for so many minutes. That way, even if your weight does not change that much in that period or even goes in the wrong direction, you still know that your body is benefiting from the parts of your weight loss plan that you are still in touch with.

NOTE: People who begin exercising as part of their weight loss program often experience a weight GAIN somewhere in the first few weeks of their new exercise experience. THIS IS PERFECTLY NATURAL! If you have just begun exercising to lose weight and experience a weight gain, this should be only temporary, and is most commonly caused by your body adding muscle mass faster than it loses fat.

3. Plan to go slow:

I do not know if there is a statistic somewhere that demonstrates how many people drop out of their weight loss program due to stress, strain, pain, or just plain burnout. However, I have experienced it myself, I have read about it, and I know people it has happened to. Sometimes the simplest statements are most true. One that you will often hear is, "It took years for your body to get this way, and you can not change it overnight." This is so true. Also, take into consideration that, even though you might not be SEEING significant changes, if you are taking the steps that you have outlined in your weight loss plan, your body is adapting inside, in places you can not see, but it is repairing and preparing to move to higher levels of fitness and health.

4. Plan to measure your progress:

I know I said not to stress so much about the weight loss, but you do need to see what is going on. You do not have to concentrate exclusively on pounds lost, however. If you can walk farther this week than you could two or three weeks ago, you are progressing. Hopefully, in another two weeks, you will be walking farther, or faster. If, at the start of your weight loss program you could only exercise for five minutes at a time, and now you can exercise for 15 minutes, that is progress, is not it? That's an accomplishment and is something you should be proud of.

NOTE: One measurement of progress in a weight loss program is quite simply "size". Two weeks into a weight loss program, you might actually have gained weight, for example, as I pointed out a few paragraphs ago. However, if your clothes are looser, or you need to buy smaller clothes, or friends are coming up and asking, "Have you lost weight?" these are good signs that your program is working even if your scales have not gotten the news yet.

5. Plan to stay motivated:

One of the most common obstacles that knock people off their weight loss program is loss of motivation. The drive and excitement that gets you started is very seldom still around when you lace up your walking shoes for what seems like the millionth time and have only lost two lbs.

Including your reasons for losing weight, the emotional and perhaps physical triggers that got you started in the first place, as part of your written weight loss plan gives you a means of reinvigorating your desire to achieve your goals. We often forget how we felt and what we believed at the start of such a journey, and being able to pull out the paper and review the dreams and expectations can bring us back up to that original level, or at least remind us of what we are enduring this for.

I used to be an instructor for a major national corporation, and one thing that I and other instructors would tell our students was, to achieve their goals, they had to, "plan their work, and work their plan."

Seven Tips For Offering Psychological First Aid In Schools

Psychological first aid is defined as offering immediate, compassionate support after a traumatic event which helps children and adolescents identify coping strategies or healthy, adaptive coping methods for dealing with the crisis. Psychological first aid for children and adolescents refers to the specific steps that adults can take to help children deal with their own flight, fight or freeze response to a crisis or traumatic event.

Strategies associated with psychological first aid can be used by teachers to effectively reach and respond to students who have recently experienced or are currently experiencing a crisis or traumatic event. Further, early intervention may also prevent children from experiencing complex, long terms symptoms as a result of the trauma.

In many communities, schools are viewed as hubs of social interaction, information and at times, support. Schools can be ideal locations for children and adolescence to receive psychological first aid after experiencing a crisis or traumatic event. Students bring their social and emotional needs to school and it is often the classroom teacher who must intervene and provide support, particularly if a teacher has been charged with a teacher-counselor role within the school.

In this article, i outline steps teachers may engage in psychological first aid practices to assist their students who have recently experienced traumatic events.

Making contact refers to building a trusting relationship with a child and establishing contact so that the child feels that someone is available and that the adult will listen, validate, support and care for them. For teachers who have established strong relationships with their students, making contact may also mean noticing subtle or pronounced behavioral changes in a student and making time for one on one contact with the child to listen. It is important that teachers establish contact but do not force a child or adolescent to tell the teacher "what happened" or "what is wrong". Children and adolescents may be asked if they would like to talk about the event or crisis, but should not feel forced to tell "the story" if they are unable or unready to do so. Some children may simply want to discuss how they feel, how their body feels or what they are worried about rather than telling intimate details of a traumatic event. Teachers should allow students to determine the course of the conversation.

Providing safety is the second step. It involves specific verbalizations or behaviors by the teacher that encourage a child to feel safe at school. This may include specific statements, such as, "You are safe here with me" or "I will do my best to keep you safe here at school". Specific safety behaviors may include allowing a student to hold a special stuffed animal, sit in the teacher's chair or near the teacher, sit near a friend in the classroom or sit in special place in the room with comfortable pillows and blankets. Adolescents may feel a greater sense of safety by talking with the teacher in private, sitting with a group of friends or near a best friend. Expressive arts can also be used to help develop a sense of safety. For example, children and adolescents may draw or paint pictures of a "safe space" or write a poem about a safe place or safe person. Children who do not feel safe at school will not be able to sustain their attention, function optimally or retain academic content or information.

The third component of Psychological First Aid, stabilizing affect, refers to helping to stabilize a student who is expressing strong emotions related to the traumatic event. Anger, sadness, fear and confusion are common affective states that may occur after a child has witnessed a traumatic event. Despite the structure of the school environment and the school day, students may experience extreme emotional states at school and may need assistance with returning to a more homeostatic emotional state. Assisting a child in this manner often involves finding a private space to sit with the child or adolescent, calmly accepting the emotion being displayed, and if the child is listening, reflecting back to the child what is happening in the moment. For example, a teacher may state, "I can see that you are very angry and frustrated right now and you are not sure what to do" or "You are so sad right now and crying very hard". Simple reflections such as these help children feel validated and help them make sense of their extreme emotions. Additional strategies for stabilizing affect may include naming the behavior that the child is displaying as a result of the emotion ( "You are pounding your fists on the table because you are mad") and reminding the child that they are not alone while facing the problem ( "I am here with you and I care about you. I am going to listen to you".)

Addressing needs or concerns refers to asking questions about what the child needs in the immediate moment or what concerns the child has as that time. Students who have just experienced a strong emotional outpouring may ask to use the bathroom, for a drink of water or to have a few minutes in private before going back to class. Some students may want to go home and be with family members to feel connected to and sheltered by their families. Traumatic events frequently invoke a yearning for attachment and closeness with caregivers. Other students may pose existential questions to the teacher in attempt to understand death, grieving or the "why" of man-made crises or natural disasters. Teachers should calmly respond to student needs and concerns to the best of their ability and admit when they do not know how to respond. Children and adolescents will still benefit by being able to state their needs and concerns and have a compassionate adult listen to them.

Facilitating coping is an important step in psychological first aid because it reminds students of how they are coping with the traumatic or stressful event as well as gives them time and space with an adult to identify other strategies that they can engage in to cope with their thoughts and feelings. To begin, the teacher may want to praise the very basic steps the student has taken up until that time. For example, teachers may state that a student is brave and strong for attending school despite the crisis or teachers may praise a student's wisdom for asking for support or letting an adult help him or her. Additionally, if the student is calmer at this point, the teacher can ask what the student would like to do to begin to feel better. Students may name coping skills that have worked for them in the past when they are upset and teachers should validate these instincts. A teacher may say, "You just told me that during the last time that you were really scared, you talked to your mom and dad and cried. But afterward, you felt better". Students may decide that they want to talk to trusted adults in their family or community about how they are feeling and what they worry about. Students may also reveal that they would like to draw a picture, read a book, and play with or sit with their friends. All are examples of children or teens "reminding themselves" of their innate coping skills and the different actions that they can take to cope. Students who are psychologically stuck or unable to name coping skills may benefit by having the teacher gently brain storm with the child or suggest specific coping strategies.

Finally, the last two steps in Psychological First Aid involve Linking with collaborative services and Referral to other professionals for follow up. Because of the nature of these steps parents of the student should be contacted if the teacher has not already done so. Linking with collaborative services and referrals simply means providing parents or caregivers with information about community resources which may help the student and / or family deal with the crisis or traumatic event. For example, information about services or agencies which provide food, clothing, shelter, water or which address basic needs should be shared with the parents. If those basic needs are not an issue, the teacher may then want to help the parents consider how to ensure a sense of safety, comfort and support at home. Again this may include linking families with outside services (eg a church leader, counselor, etc.) to provide additional intervention. This may be particularly true when the parents are too impacted by the traumatic event to be the sole source of support for the child.

In conclusion, the school environment is impacted by the social and emotional needs of its students. The psychological and emotional impact of trauma on children and adolescents will impair a student's ability to function in a school environment in a variety of ways. The steps of psychological first aid can assist teachers with providing a sense of safety, support, stability, nurturance and reassurance through practical counseling strategies.

Harrison's very first song on a Beatles album. Not particularly memorable, but not bad.

Another Harrison song I've always liked. It's got this cool off kilter sound that makes it quite unique.

The perfect followup to "Helter Skelter." The Beatles go from impossibly loud to impossibly quiet, just like that. A beautiful song.

A lot of people are down on Harrison's Indian music experimentation. Not me. I dig it.

"Old Brown Shoe" – B- Side to "Ballad of John & Yoko" (1969)

You can hear this on the Past Masters Vol. 2 album or the "Blue" Greatest Hits. I recommend the Past Masters collections so you are not getting a lot of the songs twice. The Past Masters (volumes 1 and 2) collect all of The Beatles songs that were singles / EPs only and are not available on the official UK Beatles albums.

"Only a Northern Song" – Yellow Submarine (1968)

Of the 4 new songs on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, 2 of them were George's. This one (which is OK) and "It's All Too Much" (which is awesome.)

"Piggies" – The White Album ( 1968)

Wonderfully weird, just like most of the rest of The White Album which is, in my opinion, The Beatles greatest album.

"Savoy Truffle" – The White Album (1968)

It actually took me a long time to get into this song, but now I think it's pretty great. It's a grower.

"Something" – Abbey Road (1969 )

Frank Sinatra's favorite "Lennon / McCartney" song. Yes he really said that. To this day I do not know if that was a dig at Lennon / McCartney or if he really did not know they did not write it.

Can be heard on the Past Masters, Volume Two. All instrumentation was by Indian musicians on Indian instruements. The instrumental track was actually recorded in Bombay, India.

Paul McCartney actually plays the lead guitar part on this. McCartney's fast noisy guitar solos were inspired by Jimi Hendrix who was still mostly unknown at the time.

On the 15th of September, New York based consultancy firm, Towers Watson (NYSE:TW), projected an 8.2% increase in employer health care costs for 2011. The news announced on the 14th of September came after Tricom India announced that it recently secured a five-year contract from a US-based healthcare firm for $10 million. Meanwhile, Conifer Health Solutions also announced an acquisition on the 28th of September. The company is acquiring MediHealth Outsourcing in order to strengthen its position in the healthcare outsourcing space.

Garbage is very harmful to our environment. It poses dangerous risks to our land water, and air. Some of the ways we currently dispose of it are recycling, composting, hazardous material disposal, landfills, and incineration. Recycling is a cost-effective way to dispose of specific things such as metal scraps, paper, and plastic because it wastes less energy to make a new item out of an old item than to make a new item from scratch. For example, it takes almost eight hours of electricity to make enough aluminum for thirty-four aluminum cans, but only takes an hour of electricity to make the same amount of cans from recycled aluminum. You might think this is a good thing, because then landfills can fill more, right? However, incinerating trash has a bad effect on the environment. It creates exhaust and emissions, which contributes to air pollution, and air pollution contributes to global warming. As you can see, recycling, composting, and disposing of hazardous materials only take care of a small percentage of garbage. The rest goes to either a combustion facility or a landfill, which both contribute to pollution. Leaky landfills contribute to water pollution and incinerating contributes to air pollution.

Garbage also harms the environment because it results in pollution if you dispose of it in a certain way. As stated above, landfills might leak chemicals into surrounding bodies of water and any water under it, such as groundwater. Then the lake or groundwater may evaporate and cause acid rain or poison larger bodies of water. Acid rain is caused by depositing wet and dry acidic components, such as water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. This happens when a large amount of carbon dioxide enters clouds. Then when it rains, the elements mixed together kill plants, pollute water, and erode stonework. Incineration also pollutes the environment as stated above.
