2 The tonsils prevent the spread of infection from the nose and throat into the bronchi and the lungs so their removal would create situations of mild asthma developing into severe one. In susceptible individuals symptoms of asthma may even precipitate due to tonsillectomy.

3 The presence or absence of tonsils actually does not make any difference over the allergic state of an individual. So technically removal of tonsils cannot precipitate the symptoms of asthma according to this view.

With reference to the varied views mentioned above it seems that the most appropriate path for the surgery for the removal of tonsils would not only be an individual choice but also may mean that a certain individual needs to be studied for previous history of infections, process of treatment and pathway of recovering from the infections before any decisions can be taken.

If there is evidence of recurring infections of throat and the infections seem to be localised in the tonsils then this may be the only option provided there are no other serious complications. Children in the younger stages are more susceptible to repeated infections of throat and the chest so to understand that the infections are localised to the tonsil area is very important before taking the decision of tonsillectomy.

Another point to be thoroughly understood is that removal of infected tonsils may have no effect whatsoever over the condition of asthma of the child. The removal of tonsils may have effect on the associated conditions of aggravation of the symptoms because of the effect that the associated allergens may be having on the situation.

This is also true only to the extrinsic type of asthma, but it shall have none or very little effect on the intrinsic type of asthma. Food Additives That Cause Insomnia, Restlessness and Anxiety

So you think fresh fruit and vegetables are great for your health? Perhaps not. There are many food additives that are actually harmful and can lead to insomnia, restlessness, anxiety and many other problems. And some of them are used on fresh fruit and vegetables. But that’s not all. There are a range of food additives that have been isolated that can cause insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, depression, wakefulness, irritability etc.

Australians Sue Dengate and Dr Howard Dengate have researched food additives and food technology for many years. The following information and statistics come from their DVD “Fed Up With Children’s Behaviour.”

Firstly let’s look at Sue Dengate’s term “Food Intolerance” because it is not the same as a food allergy. Some of the symptoms are the same as allergic reactions, but can include other symptoms such as irritable bowel symptoms etc. Many food intolerance’s have a delayed reaction time (2 – 3 days), some are accumulative, and many are very difficult to isolate and identify. Most people have no idea of their food intolerance’s!

There are no scientifically proven tests for food intolerance. Reactions can sometimes take weeks to get over. That is why we need some expert help on this subject.

In the 1950s 20% of our food items were controlled by the supermarkets, now the figure is about 80%. It is increasingly important to know what you are eating and how it is affecting your health, mood, sleep, skin, behavior, headaches, bowel movements etc.

Migraine sufferers have tripled since the 1970s with over 20% of households now containing at least 1 migraine sufferer.

The prevalence of eczema has increased 2-3 fold since the 1970s. About 1 Australian in 3 is affected at some stage in their lives.

Irritable bowel syndrome is now thought to affect about 20% of people living in developed countries compared with almost zero in countries with traditional eating habits.

Asthma has risen from about 10% in the 1970s to about 30% today. Asthma is the leading cause of school absence. Most sufferers react to one of two food additives. 20% of sufferers are affected by salicylates. The majority can be helped by avoiding food additives. Even the asthma medications themselves contain additives that adversely affect sufferers!

Since the 1990s there has been a dramatic increase in the use of anti-depressant medications, including for young children, and including 3000 prescriptions to babies under 12 months of age in the USA alone! There has been a 10 fold increase in major depression since 1945.

Since the 1970s rates of autism are thought to have increased 10 fold in the USA.

Just because a food additive is called ‘natural’ doesn’t mean its safe!

So here are some examples of nasty food additives to avoid if you’re having difficulties sleeping, waking in the middle of the night, waking too early, feeling anxious, overly tired, depressed, stressed, etc:

o The common bread preservative (or mould inhibitor) 282. Calcium propionate (282)’s symptoms (from eating quantities of bread) can include difficulty getting to sleep, night walking, night terrors, unexplained tiredness, depression, irritability, growing pains, bed wetting, nasal congestion and restlessness;

o Wakefulness, depression, restlessness, irritability (320 BHA Buylated Hydroxyanisole antioxidant – banned in Japan and may be unlisted in products containing less than 5% vegetable oils);

o Salicylates. There’s a factsheet on salicylates that includes information relevant to tinnitus, reversible hearing loss, vertigo, symptoms of Meniere’s Disease, insomnia, changes in children’s behavior. Of particular interest here is the information on how ‘good old fruit and vegetables’ are not always good at all. Find out about low salicylate fruit and vegetables vs. high salicylate fruit and vegetables, and how to control your intake;

o Wakefulness in young children (102 Tartrazine colouring and 110 Sunset Yellow colouring);

o 621 Monosodium Glutamate flavor enhancer MSG. Restlessness, wakefulness and irritability; and

o 951 Aspartame artificial sweetener – banned for US air pilots. Mood alteration (anxiety, agitation, irritability, depression), insomnia, fatigue.

It’s also very unfortunate that some nasty food additives do not have to be declared on the product labels – so you will need to investigate further to find out exactly which breads are the ones that don’t have the food additive that in linked with depression, etc. There’s also information on hair spray and air fresheners, it’s a must-read.

Understanding Depression – Part II

Unfortunately, in our times, many people are finding it difficult to get the right motivation to overcome the difficult times. At the same time, the media is fueling the widespread half- knowledge of the existence of something like "depression." The Pharmaceutical industry is pushing newer and expensive drugs each day into the market and the 'over-zealous' doctors are more than eager to prescribe antidepressants, anxiolytics and mood- stabilizers. With this, it is easier for weak-willed individuals to label themselves as "depressives," as that deprives them of taking the responsibility to go out of their way way for setting their life right.

Add to this the withering family and social support that used to be the natural "antidepressant" for ages. It seems like almost every one is in competition with everyone else. It may be education, money, gadgets, cars, mansions, children's performances, quality of clothes, brands, foreign trips, looks, spouses, the restaurants we eat in, the parties that we attend, the clubs that we belong to and something as insignificant as the schools our children attend … our generation seems to be in a state of competition about anything and everything. Continued unhealthy competition means continuous unhealthy stress and stress means imbalance.

We feel incompetent or insignificant about something or the other compared to someone or the other at sometimes or the other. We want to control or be in control … it's a kind of psychological race that all or at least majority of us seems to be running in.

Manipulation seems to be our basic need. Some do it knowingly, others- unknowingly, but none of the relationships seem to be healthy enough to feel safe and strong. We are so insecure that we do not trust in "letting go." We want to change the others, we want things "our way," we want to be in control of things and people.

But that is not what life is all about. This is a place for individuals. And each individual is different in needs, desires, wants, abilities, interests, aptitude, drive, motivations, aspirations, strengths, looks, family … in every possible way. Millions of people means millions of ways of life which in turn means so many ways of feeling bad about ourselves and our situation.

Unfortunately, our culture encourages "externalization" and looks down upon "internalizing." None is encouraged to think about self or talk about self. This, in addition to the effects of an unbridled competitive environment and a lack of family and social support, seems to be majorly responsible for the conversion of everyday maladies to mild, moderate or severe depression.

TREATMENT: On the positive side, Depression is one of the fully treatable conditions. Counseling, Psychotherapy, Medication and Electroconvulsive treatment used in proper combination under expert guidance can help with sure and complete recovery. However, prevention is better, always better as the sufferings can give a person serious setbacks.

Emetophobia Or the Fear of Vomiting

No one likes to be sick, especially in public. Illness is a private affair. But if you have a fear of throwing up in public or in private, to the point that it causes you to act irrationally – then you may have emetophobia or the fear of vomiting.

You may be so scared of vomiting that you will not eat or you will not go out in public. The thought of catching a stomach virus may throw you into a panic. Just seeing vomit or the sounds of someone retching makes you want to run away, far away.

Emetophobia is classified as an anxiety disorder. This is a serious disease. It can cause panic attacks. It can make a sufferer crave social isolation, as the fear takes over their daily lives. In an effort to deal with the phobia, the Emet may stop going out in public and stop eating or eat very little. Some women with emetophobia will refuse to get pregnant for fear of morning sickness. Those with severe emetophobia will go to great lengths to avoid hospitals or anyone who might be sick. And just the thought of nausea of ​​any sort will ruin their day.

Many people who suffer from emetophobia are diagnosed with anorexia or self-starvation. The Emet will stop at nothing to prevent themselves from vomiting and this includes the cessation of eating.

The idea is, if you do not eat food, there is no way that you can vomit or get sick. Ironically, eating food, after depriving oneself can often make the emotophobic person feel nauseous – thus giving feedback to the fear and reinforcing the phobia.

Who has emetophobia? Research indicates that six percent of the US population claims to fear being sick, but a much smaller number actually suffers from emetophobia, as indicated by a variety of phobic behavior. Still emetophobia is the seventh most common type of phobia.

Treatment for emetophobia. The exact cause of Emetophobia is unknown, but the most common theory is that it is the result a traumatic incident of vomiting between the ages of six and ten.

Treatment can include therapy to treat the underlying trauma, hypnotherapy to distinguish the past accidents as well as change the Emet's perspective on vomiting, anxiety therapy and anti-anxiety medication. Some people respond quickly to such mtheods. Others with emotophobia may take several weeks to find relief and never be completely cured of their phobia.

Many people make jokes about throwing up or puking, but when a fear of vomiting stops people from eating out, socializing, developing relationships, getting pregnant or even working, it is no laughing matter. The anxiety about vomiting a sufferer feels ruins almost every day.

If you are suffering from emetophobia, you are not alone and you can be helped. The first step is to identify your problem which can lead them to effective treatment. The panic attacks, the isolation, the not eating, etc. All of this can be changed, usually through a combination of therapy and hypnosis.

Tips on Getting Rid of Panic and Anxiety Attacks

Mind numbing fear of an unknown origin, shortness of breath, racing heart, chest pain, tunnel vision, dizziness, nausea, hyperventilating, and the panicked feeling of fight-or-flight; these are all symptoms of a panic attack and those experiencing it for the first time often think they are having a heart attack or a nervous breakdown and will call for emergency services. Anxiety attacks vary in severity and duration and can be as short lived as 15 seconds or can sometimes come in waves of symptoms over a period of hours.

Millions of people suffer from panic attacks and for some they are so crippling that it prevents them from living a normal fulfilling life.

If you already know you are prone to them, being aware of the signs and symptoms can help you learn how to stop panic attacks in their tracks or at best help you prepare for them and handle them in a relatively calm manner.

Once you have determined and understand the origin and triggers, it will be easier to recognize potential situations to avoid and to stop the attacks before they happen.

There are other things you can do which can be very beneficial in stopping panic attacks. Eating properly, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and other drugs can be a huge benefit as well as exercising and keeping a healthy sleep regiment. Exercise releases certain chemicals in your brain that are excellent in fighting depression and can in effect help with panic attacks as well. Stress can often be a precipitating factor in panic attacks and ensuring your body has the necessary tools to deal with the stress is vital. B-complex vitamins are known as the stress vitamins, so make sure you are getting enough of them whether in your diet or a good supplement. Eat healthy and exercise to build up your physical defences.

Most often just prior to or during a panic attack your focus is on the symptoms and the attack itself. Attempt to control your thoughts to concentrate on more positive thinking. Try to remain calm by reminding yourself that what is happening will pass with no danger involved. Learn how to divert your attention away from the attack. Find a quiet place to refocus your attention, perhaps you have learned meditation techniques which will help. Be self mindful of your breathing and slow it down intentionally.

Those who suffer severe and mind crippling panic attacks may have to initially seek medical attention and often times medication may be necessary, but this should always be in conjunction with therapy to learn how to control them eventually without medication. Often times the medication used to treat these disorders is addictive and should never be a permanent solution, only a stepping stone to full recovery.
