According to the National Institution of Health, the definition of healthy weight is a BMI of 24 or less. Men and Women with a BMI of 25-30 are considered to be overweight. BMI is reliable for people from 19-70 years of age. Study reveals that for people over 64 years of age, the risk of dying from heart disease does not go up with a BMI between 25-27. A BMI over 28 seems to increase risk of heart disease.

3. Slowly and Surely
Change your lifestyle habits slowly. Each day replace some of the saturated and trans fat foods
with healthier foods.
Start Exercising gradually. Walk 10 minutes a day for a few days then 15 minutes, 30 minutes. Keep going until you work your way up to doing a supervised exercise program. Be happy if you lose 2 to 3 Lbs a week.

Sitting in front of the computer or television all day will increase the risk of arthritis, type II diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, and depression.

In faraway places such as Southern Italy and Greek, most people live longer than us because their diet contains lots of fruits and vegetables. The People in Southern Italy and Greek only eat fish and poultry a few times a week and meat a few times a month. Their diet is high in carbohydrates and only containing 8% of saturated fat.
You can find some very good traditional Greek foods in you local restaurants.

Fiber is the portion of plant material that humans are not able to digest. There are two kinds of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble. Both are important for proper bowel function. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, forming a gel in the intestines. Insoluble fiber passes through the digestive system almost intact, adding bulk to the stool and acting as a sponge to absorb water. If you have gone through all kinds of diet plans or programs such as diet pills and supplements, and despite all your efforts you can’t seem to lose weight, then you might be not eating enough fiber.
Study shows that people eat as much as 60% of fiber everyday, 85% are in ideal weight. In the US they only average about 15% of fiber being consumed per person, this may be the the cause of obesity of 60% of adults.
Here are some foods that are high in fiber:

Benefits of Having First Aid Kits: Why You Really Need One?

Accidents happen indiscriminately; it could happen to your family, to your friends, and even to you.  Of course when these things happen, the first thing you can do is to respond immediately to lessen the collateral damage. But are you prepared? Do you have cotton balls, alcohol, bandages, or scissors to help you treat somebody who’s wounded? In short, do you have an Emergency First Aid Kit?

You can find these things in your local shop, at home or any clinic but do you bring some of these with you when you travel? These questions are basic to determine whether you really are ready during emergencies, if the answer is ‘No’ then you still have today to secure the things you need. The best thing you can do is to buy a First Aid Kit.

There are tons of medical benefits you can get from Emergency First Aid Kits and let’s try to tackle the most basic ones.

1. You can treat injuries and wounds immediately – the truth is everybody can respond and treat injuries or wounds as they happen. The problem enters only when there is nothing one can use to treat them. Having a first aid kit will actually make things easier for you considering you will have anything you need in one pack. A huge percentage of accident fatalities can be attributed to the lack first aid treatments. If only victims would be given medical treatment before paramedics arrive, there is a good chance of survival. Moreover, medical kits are also useful to treat wounds to prevent further loss of blood. Whether you are at home or enjoying a camping activity, there is a need for a First Aid Kit.

2. You can prevent infection – when the skin is cut and open, you will need to cover it with something clean. If you have a medical kit with you, then you can cleanse the wound with antiseptic (alcohol, betadyne solution) and cover it with a fresh bandage preventing the risk of infection.

3. You feel at ease wherever you go – whether you are at home or outdoor, once you have your medical kit with you, you will feel at ease knowing you are ready to respond when accidents happen to your family. Basically, having a First Aid Kit means you are ready. Of course, it is always better to stay safer at all times by taking necessary precautions.

The human body is so fragile that it couldn’t stand major injuries for long. Having Emergency Medical First Aid Kit will, at least, give you an opportunity to lessen or prevent further damage.

A study has been conducted by the Red Cross before to know whether medical kits are really effective. Their finding showed that almost 90% of the times death is prevented when proper first aid treatment is given to the victims before paramedics arrive to the rescue.

The fact is paramedics or the people who respond immediately when you call an ambulance only give first aid to the victims, although they can revive the person if they needed to while en route to the hospital. The ambulance is also a more advanced First Aid Kit.

Now, the question is, do you think you really need an Emergency First Aid Kit? Absolutely, yes!

How An Emergency Room Functions

Millions of patients walk into emergency rooms every year to get medical attention. With the proliferating of medical series, everybody seems to be amazed with the 24 hour action hospital department with emergency nurses running and treating critically injured victims.

But how does emergency room really works?

According to Dr. Carl Bianco, writer of How Emergency Room Works, the first step in the emergency room process is the triage. A triage is an emergency nurse who categorizes and prioritizes the patient’s condition. The triage categorizes the patient’s situation into three categories:

1. immediately life threatening
2. urgent, but no immediately life threatening
3. less urgent

The triage is also responsible in recording the patient’s vital signs which are temperature, pulse, respiratory rate and blood pressure. The triage also gets the brief patient history, medications, allergies to determine the appropriate category.

Registrations will be the next step. With the registration, additional information is obtained from the patient. Mainly insurance information, creation of medical record for reference while in the hospital. But for life threatening situations like car crash of life threatening cases, registration can be completed later on.

The patient will go next to the examination room where an emergency room nurse will get more detailed information about the sickness. There are certain hospitals that have divided their emergency department into areas dedicated to pediatric ER, a chest-pain ER, a fast track (for minor injuries and illnesses), trauma center (usually for severely injured patients) and an observation unit (for patients who do not require hospital admission but needs prolonged treatment or diagnostic tests).

After the nurse has completed her duty, the emergency physician will get a complete review of the information obtained from the patient. He then formulates a possible cause or diagnosis based on the symptoms.

Diagnostic tests are required when the physician sees that the patient’s symptom and physical examination failed to get a likely diagnosis. After conducting the diagnostic tests and was able to identify the probable diagnosis, necessary action or steps are undertaken to treat the patient.

Normally, a scene from the ER can be chaotic and confusing for a victim of patient’s family. A long line of patients wanting to be examined could a dreadful sight. There are some people who tried to get medical attention to no avail. Donna Mason, an emergency nurse gave CNN five things to remember in an ER:

1. Inform your doctor is you will be going to the emergency room.

2. Use the ambulance specifically for threatening situations. There would be instances that whenever emergency personnel can see that the patient can actually walk and chose to arrive with the emergency room to get attention, they asked the patient to step down and wait.

3. If the triage is not being helpful in addressing the case, speak up and look for the person in charge.

4. It is important to control temper at all times. It is also important not to lie about your symptoms just to get attention ahead of the others.

5. If things are really getting bad and nobody from the emergency department is helping, look for a house phone and inform the issue to the hospital administrator or patient advocate who is available 24 hours.

Emergency room experience can be tough and rough. It is necessary for us to understand the how things work to understand why some emergency room or departments will take a while to address patient issues. Emergency rooms are a mazes filled with emergency room nurses who I wager will be more than happy to take care of the patients.

Biopsychosocial Dimensions Of Human Behavior

Introduction

The human species is distinctly different from all other species because of their behavioral aspect. Many scholars, psychologists and socialists have sought to explain human behavior. Some people prefer to look at it from a biological point of view while others prefer to consider the sociological aspects. For purposes of this paper, an analysis of the biopsychosocial aspects will be conducted and then applied to a critical life event.

Biopsychosocial dimension

The biopsychosocial dimension of human behavior is an incorporation of the biological psychological and social factors that explain human behavior. Starting with the biological dimensions; scientists assert that human behavior can be explained through genetics and heredity. In this case genetics is primarily determined by DNA (a special type of compound found in the cells). The latter compound is primarily responsible for an individual’s behavioral outcome. There are three main sections under which one can understand the biological aspect of human behavior. The first is through intelligence. Biological scientists assert that one’s intelligence is partly determined by their genes. This assertion is verified by the strong correlation between the IQ intelligence traits of twins. Similarly, certain depictions of intelligence are common in closely related family members. (Kimble and Colman, 1995)

The biological approach also explains certain peculiar behavior through heredity and genetics. For instance, schizophrenia; A study conducted upon two closely related subjects such as brothers who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia found that a large percentage of these individuals actually had genetic component that were similar in nature. These scientists however warned that the presence of a certain genetic component need not mean that persons will behave in a certain way. Instead other aspects have to be considered too.

The third component of the biological explanation of human behavior is related to certain uncontrollable actions that are common to all individuals. They explain this through the nervous system. For instance when one has been subjected to extreme hunger, their brain tells them to look for food. In cases where a human being is subjected to extreme conditions for instance when they are situated in a place with no conventional food; they may be forced to look for anything edible e.g. fruits, roots and herbs. Eating roots from the bush may not be a common occurrence in day to day lives; however, it is plausible in certain conditions. Taking another example of sleep; through the genetic approach, it is possible to understand why certain human beings tend to sleep more than others. Biochemists assert that there is a certain part of the brain responsible for controlling ones sleep known as  the medulla oblongata. Consequently, when there is a malfunction in ones medulla oblongata or when it is working excessively, then an individual will tend to sleep more or be less alert in meetings than others. Through these examples, it is possible to understand why the human being behaves the way he does in certain instances. (Barrett, 2004)

The biopsychosocial explanation also entails psychological aspects. Through this approach, one can understand human behavior through cognitive development. In this approach most human beings are able to deduce meaning from occurrences through the relationships which they develop in their minds about that particular item. As the mind develops and gets accustomed to certain ideas, then it begins reacting towards them in certain way and this brings about different reactions. There are numerous psychologists who contributed towards psychological theories of behavior and some of them include;

  • Maslow
  • Freud
  • Erikson

These psychologists all had their various explanations about human behavior. However, these will not be examined in detail here. Nonetheless, certain emerging issues come out of the work that these psychologists did. They tended to agree with the notion that humans are largely effected by their surroundings and that most of them may adopt behavior subconsciously.

Psychological analyses of the human mind also allow one to understand the reason behind certain emotions. They also provide a platform against which one can understand why certain human beings may react emotionally to a certain issue while others may be unaffected by it. For instance, the issue of temperance differs from person to person. This is largely shaped by the role that the mind has on that specific individual. (Barrett, 2004)

The last aspect of the biopsychosocial explanations of human behavior is the social aspect. Here, one must consider the influences that family and culture have on human behavior. When trying to understand the effect of culture and family on human behavior, it can be very difficult to do so since the influences are complicated. It should be noted that in social analysis, there is a difference between ideal behavior, actual behavior and believed behavior. For instance, when one visits another culture to find out things about them, it is likely that those persons may put on ‘a show’ to impress the visitor. If it is a family, then that person may want to portray his family in positive light thus asking his children and wife to tidy up and wear their best outfit. Consequently, in order to understand the influence of culture or family on foreign persons, it would be favorable to get them in their natural setting either when they are unaware or when the observer is far away from them.

The concept of believed behavior is also important in analyzing cultural influences on behavior because one can understand why certain things occur the way they do. For example, a study asking men in North America whether they assist their wives in household chores, it was found that a majority of them felt that housework was split fifty-fifty between the wife and the husband. However, when the researchers themselves sought to find out what actually proceeds in most households, it was found that a large percentage of the men actually did not assist their spouses with housework but in their minds, they honestly thought that this was the case. This sort of behavior can be classified as believed behavior.               When it comes to cultural influences, one must also consider ideal behavior. For instance, in China, the role of woman was strictly defined in the home. Most of them were thought as second class members of their families. However, with the introduction of the one child per family polices, more families preferred male children or females. Consequently, those who were pregnant with girls ended up terminating their pregnancies (although it was outlawed). This eventually created a generation in which the ratio of women to men was so very low. Men realized that in order to get a wife, they had to be educated, rich and maybe even willing to let them control the house. Consequently, the ideal behavior for a woman in Chinese society would have been to act subordinately to the man, however, because of the changes in demographics. Women had more leverage or bargaining power and could therefore choose no to do certain things. (Ashfor et al, 2007)

Culture has an intense effect on human behavior because it determines how people react to others, how they express their feelings among others. A study comparing American children with Japanese children found that there were substantial differences between these two groups. When American children were asked whether they would beat a child if they were punched, a large majority of them claimed that they would do so. When the Japanese children were asked whether they would hit back when actually hit, it was found that a larger number of them claimed that they would not. An actual analysis found that more Japanese children actually hit their counterparts than the Americans; its just that they did not articulate this. In other words, one can deduce the fact that in the American culture, children are more expressive and may even make assertions that they will not adhere to. However, in the Asian culture, children are taught to be subservient or to be less expressive in their words.

Culture also influences one’s understanding of the goings on in a particular area. For example, when a village woman from the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa is taken to a North American wedding, she might not understand what is going. She would wonder why a bride is dressed in white and why she is actually surrounded by other persons wearing closely related outfits. Perhaps the stranger from Africa might deduce that this is actually an ongoing ceremony but may not understand the intricacies surrounding that ceremony. She would also wonder why some people are holding flowers while others are not. Through this example, it is possible to understand why certain behaviors would occur the way they do.

Spiritual dimension

The latter biopsychosocial model of human behavior incorporates three parameters, yet there is another component to human behavior that may not be fully accounted for by the latter mentioned approaches. This is the spiritual dimension. The spiritual dimension is that element in the human being that some people call the inner psyche. In other words, it the aspect of a human being that decides between what is moral and what is immoral. It creates a conscious within us and it also allows an individual to exert more control of their lives. Through the spiritual dimension, it is possible for one to understand why human beings love one another. It is also possible to understand certain ‘abstract’ concepts such as freedom. The spiritual dimension is that inner voice of authority within any human beings that allows them to either control or act upon their instincts. (Ilham, 2000)

Without the spiritual opinions, human beings would be no different from the rest of the animal kingdom because they would let their feelings control them rather than vice versa. (it should be noted that feelings in this case refer to instincts). Many psychologists have claimed that there is a higher dimension in life. In other words, it is that aspect of the human being that prevents one from being impulsive. They strive to be better or for perfection and this is what sets human being apart from their counterparts in the animal kingdom.

Critical life event

An example of a critical life event that would affect all the three dimensions is living in a step family. In the event that a child is subjected to a painful loss of a parent, and then expected to cope with  step family, then chances are that that issue may affect them in all the three realms. For instance, a child who has grown up in a step family may be affected psychologically. This is because certain psychological needs may not be met. For instance, such a person is likely to develop sleep disorders, depressive disorders or even other more intense issues such a drug abuse. The psychological reasons behind this are that human beings require certain things at various stages of development in their lifespan. When one fails to access those things, then they are likely to carry forward that aspect into their lives. This is the reason why certain ladies tend to be promiscuous simply because they grew up without a father.

The critical event of loosing a parent can also affect a subject socially. In other words, one may be perceived by others s subordinate and this could result into feelings of low self esteem. Such a person may not be able to interact with his or her peers and may develop isolationist tendencies. It should be noted that these reactions will be affected by one’s cultural background. For instance, in certain cultures, it is normal to grow up with step families because polygamy is common. Consequently, such an individual will turn out very differently. (Ilham, 2000)

One’s heredity can also come into play when trying to understand the effects of step families. Certain individuals have greater temperaments and may depict their anger in more aggressive ways such as through antisocial behavior. Scientists assert that certain people have a greater tendency to exhibit antisocial behavior because of their biological makeup.

Conclusion

The biopsychosocial model is quite useful in understanding behavior because it explains some of the things that human beings cannot control and some of the things that they can. However, there is a limit to this approach because it does not account for the moral aspect of the human nature. In the model, issues such as love, freedom etc cannot be explained.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab – The Procedures Used in a Rehab Center

Co-existence of drug and alcohol rehab:

It is a usual phenomenon of the same center housing a drug and alcohol rehab programs together under the same roof. It is so because it has been observed that in many cases individuals who are under the influence of alcohol abuse also suffer from an incidence of drug addiction. An individual having dual-diagnoses of alcohol as well as substance abuse will require treatment for both the things. Although there are some similarities in the procedures of drug and alcohol rehab therapies, there are very prominent. One such difference is in the withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms for alcohol are almost the same no matter the dependency was actually on beer, hard liquor or wine. However withdrawal symptoms from drug addiction are different for the different kinds of drug abuse.

Various procedures to bring about non dependency on drugs and alcohol:

The procedures used to wean away people from alcohol or drugs depend mainly on the substance and its qualities on which the addicted person was dependent. The following is an example of the commonly used therapies at the drug and alcohol rehab centers.

  • Social Rehab Procedures: Narconon is a type of drug and rehab therapy that does not require the use of any drugs or medicines to solve the problems drug addiction. It uses nutrition as the base factor to bring about changes in the health conditions of the addicted individuals. This procedure can neither be labeled as psychiatric nor as medical. It is rather hailed as a social model of rehabilitating addicted individuals.
  • Medical Rehab Procedures: Most medical procedures include the usage of other medicines and at times anesthesia to help in the process of rapid detoxification from the dependence of morphine, cocaine, opium and heroin addictions. This process tries to calm the addicted persons by letting them sleep through the process of extreme detoxification. This procedure is carried out mainly in severely addicted individuals. This is carried out in those drug and alcohol rehab centers which has well qualified doctors, nurses and other staff at their disposal. The withdrawal and the whole treatment are carried out under medical supervision.
  • Spiritual Rehab Procedures: this procedure encompasses the use of a 12-step program, which involve taking help of the religious methods. Like in U.S.A the Christian religion is taken as a guideline and the addicts are given sermons from the Bible and asked to submit their will to the supreme power and surrender to Him. They pray to God to help them recover from their illness of addiction.
  • Holistic Drug Rehab Procedure: this procedure involves the increase on the three elements of body, mind and soul in order to achieve complete non dependency on drugs and alcohol. Meditation, yoga, listening to music and involving in any hobby form part of this procedure of drug and alcohol rehab.

Most rehabs carry out a combination of these above mentioned procedures. This ensures effectiveness of the rehab program. However practice of any one of the above will also ensure complete cure of the addicted individuals.

Dietary Supplements, History and FDA Regulations

Nearly 2,500 years ago, Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine,” embraced the concept, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Medicinal herbs have been used since time immemorial in all cultures the world over. Even though we know that diet plays a significant role in 5 of the 10 leading causes of death (including coronary heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis), the advent of modern pharmaceutical therapy in the nineteenth century caused the unfortunate fall of the “food as medicine” philosophy within the practice of modern medicine.

The passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) marked a new era for the importance of nutrition in human health. Millions of consumers have embraced the concept of using food, dietary supplements, and herbal extracts to positively affect their health, and the dietary supplement industry has grown from almost zero to more than $20 billion in annual domestic sales, with worldwide sales exceeding $100 million. Although estimates vary, approximately 60% of adults in the United States identify themselves as consumers of dietary supplements; according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), close to 200 million Americans consume supplements.

Despite the widespread use of dietary supplements by American consumers, studies show that physicians and other health professionals are both unlikely to ask and unlikely to be told of their patients’ use of supplements. This is partly because of the often daunting challenge of determining the proper clinical usage and relevance of dietary supplements.

The broad definition of dietary supplements encompasses a wide variety of plant constituents (roots, leaves, stems, etc.), vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other ingredients that can have essential or nonessential bioactive constituents with associated health benefits (or risks).

Consumers tend to use dietary supplements either as “preventive nutrition” (e.g., a daily vitamin E supplement taken to prevent heart disease) or as “phytomedicine” (e.g., Ginkgo biloba used to alleviate mental dysfunction associated with senile dementia). Of course, consumers also use dietary supplements in myriad other ways as promoters of weight loss, to increase energy levels, and to treat specific diseases.

Although the FDA regulates dietary supplements in many of the same ways that it regulates conventional foods, supplement products are required to carry the disclaimer, “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” Like foods, but unlike drugs, most dietary supplements do not require premarketing approval by the FDA, but the FDA has the authority to restrict sales and remove specific supplements from the market if they are shown to pose a public health risk. Because the scientific and medical evidence for the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements is highly variable in terms of both quantity and quality, it is incumbent on health professionals to actively inform patients and clients of the risks and benefits associated with the use of these products. To do that, health professionals need to have a basic understanding of the evidence (for and against) the use of a particular supplement in a given condition or for a given effect.

This book is an effort to do just that: to provide health professionals with the background needed to converse with their patients or clients about the clinical evidence behind a wide variety of dietary supplements. Consumers need to realize that dietary supplements are not panaceas or “magic bullets” that can counteract poor health habits; rather, they are supplements to a comprehensive lifestyle approach to good health that also includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, stress management, and other positive health practices.

As consumers in modern societies have become more interested in accessing herbal medicines in trade and through the recommendation of health care professionals, the clinical evidence for herbal medicine has grown significantly. Since the passage of the DSHEA, a tremendous amount of clinical investigation has been conducted into herbal medicine and other dietary supplements. This clinical evidence lessens the validity of doctors and pharmacists not wanting to supervise the use of supplements. It is especially important to recognize the tremendous importance of traditional medicine in developing the safe use of herbs.

The goal of the purely clinical approach taken in evaluating and reviewing dietary supplements is to review dietary supplements only on scientific merit to date. As the scientific community is better able to find appropriate methods of studying the merits of traditional medicine, we expect the use of these substances will become an increasing part of health care maintenance in mainstream medicine, as well as provide further credibility to traditional healing methods.

Dr Georgia Lee – Singapore’s Most Popular Aesthetic Doctor

Singapore has many aesthetic doctors but one of them sticks to mind – thanks to her glamourous appeal, celebrity friends and cutting-edge fashion style. Her clinic at Holland Village is a mecca to celebrities who zip in for skin rejuvation and botox treatments. It is also a tome and showcase for the celebrity doctor with media features of her plastered on walls and in the magazines available for browsing there.

Dr Georgia Lee is one of the most renowned aesthetic and skincare doctors in Singapore and patients wait up to three months to see her!

She spent six years working in a few hospitals after graduation and opened TLC  Medical

Center in Holland Village, in 1999, with $300,000 capital from her husband. Dr Georgia Lee started out as a general practitioner but it was a bad allergic reaction that kick-started her interest in aesthetics. “A contraceptive that I took made me develop ugly blisters on the left side of my face. The blisters went away but I was left with pigmentation that was so bad that I hid at home and people thought I was either beaten up by my husband, had herpes or had Aids.”

She spent the next six to nine months researching on lotions and managed to heal her scars. “That unfortunate incident was a blessing in disguise as it got me interested in aesthetic treatments and made me want to help other people with skin ailments,” shares Dr Georgia Lee.

A stickler for high quality and cost-effective aesthetic practice backed by the most up-to-date technology and pharmacy, she will fly up to the factories to talk to the engineers and meet the doctors who are using the machines before making a purchase.

Besides her winning personality and state-of-the-art treatments, Dr Georgia Lee is also renowned for her generosity. Not in the material sense, but in her genuine desire to help people. “I always give more than I get, that’s why my husband says I will never be rich,” she says with a laugh. She frequently organises ‘self-improvement’ parties for her customers – most recently, she held a make-up class conducted by famous make-up artist, Andy Lee. She pays for these parties out of her own pocket. “I also told one of my clients, a stressed-out housewife, to take time out daily for herself, and if she succeeds, her next treatment will be on the house!”

She also travels frequently around the region to offer consultations to other aesthetic practitioners and give talks.  Not one to rest on her laurels, Dr Georgia Lee has just launched her own brand of medical-based beauty and make-up products, called drgeorgialee skincare.

Parkinsons Disease Causes Symptoms Information With Treatment

Parkinson’s is found all over the world. Exact global figures are not always available, though it is estimated that four million people worldwide have the condition. Parkinson’s disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. Parkinson’s disease afflicts 1 to 1 1/2 million people in the United States. The disorder occurs in all races but is somewhat more prevalent among Caucasians. People with the disease may have trouble walking, talking or doing simple tasks. Dysfunctional antioxidative mechanisms are associated with older age as well, suggesting that the acceleration of age-related changes in dopamine production may be a factor. Parkinson’s disease patients have at least one relative with parkinsonian symptoms, suggesting that a genetic factor may be involved. There is no cure for Parkinson’s at present, drugs are used to try to control symptoms of Parkinson’s. The most widely used form of treatment is L-dopa in various forms. L-dopa is transformed into dopamine in the dopaminergic neurons by L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (often known by its former name dopa-decarboxylase). The most widely practiced treatment for the speech disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease is Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). LSVT focuses on increasing vocal loudness. Regular physical exercise and/or therapy can be beneficial to the patient for maintaining and improving mobility, flexibility, balance and a range of motion. Nutrients have been used in clinical studies and are widely used by people with Parkinson’s disease in order to partially treat PD or slow down its deterioration.

Treatment of Parkinsons Disease

Common Treatment of Parkinsons Disease

Successful treatment of Parkinson’s disease involves much more than just the use of drugs. Levodopa and carbidopa combined (Sinemet) is the mainstay of Parkinson’s therapy.

Tolcapone inhibits the COMT enzyme, thereby prolonging the effects of L-dopa, and so has been used to complement L-dopa.

The most widely practiced treatment for the speech disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease is Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT).

Nutrients have been used in clinical studies and are widely used by people with Parkinson’s disease in order to partially treat PD or slow down its deterioration.

Catechol O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitors act by inhibiting catabolism of dopamine, thereby extending L-dopa’s peripheral half-life.

Surgical treatment for PD is generally considered for patients who respond to medications.

Azilect was approved for use as an initial single drug therapy in early Parkinson’s disease. Azilect (rasagiline), a new molecular entity, for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Physical therapy can help strengthen and tone underused muscles, and give rigid muscles a better range of motion.

Important Of Public Health Nursing

Isn’t it good health one of our priorities in the family among other things? With that in mind, would not it be very comforting to know also if the community where we live in also promotes public health nursing? Even if your eyebrows meet and your forehead carries a large question mark because you don’t know exactly it means and what it can do to your community, but if you read it between the lines, I am sure you would say yes right away!

But, what really is public health nursing? For some, the words may sound familiar, while others may find the words confusing. Actually, this is the practice of upholding and protecting the health of the community by using the knowledge learned from nursing, social, and social health sciences. Given the good intention of general health task, it is not surprising to know that you can find social health nursing almost anywhere in the country.

In fact, developed to describe its specific roles and to provide a guide for health nursing practice in the ever growing health care system. However, the social health nursing practice can be affected by certain factors, such as environmental, biological, cultural, economic, social and political aspects of a community. Due to the fact that public health nursing is an integral part of the healthcare system, the former is also responsive to these factors by way of working with the community in promoting health and preventing disease, injury and disability.

As public health nurses, their role is to integrate community health involvement and knowledge about the entire community with personal and clinical understandings of the health and illness experiences of individuals and families within the community. Also, they interpret and express the health and illness experiences of different, usually vulnerable individuals and families in the community to health planners and policy makers and assist members of the community to speak up their problems and hopes.

They may be carried out even by only one public health nurse or by a group of public health nurses working together for the same purpose. There could be many activities that public health nurses can do in order to promote good health and protect the health of the entire community. One of the best examples is providing health education, care management and primary care to the people and families, especially those who are members of vulnerable community.

Our world could be a better place to live in if only all the community encourage public health nursing in order to have disease-free and health-conscious family. And since family is the smallest unit of a community, the awareness in promoting health should start within it. This is much easier to achieve through the help of public health nurses, knowing that it only takes one public health nurse to operate a public health nursing.

Parkinson’s Disease – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Many researchers have been working hard of finding a cure for Parkinson’s, but despite the best efforts of scientists from around the world, the search still continues. The good news is, however, that there are treatments available that can do a great deal to relieve the pain experienced by many Parkinson’s patients. Not all patients will need drugs or medication for their condition, and generally these are only recommended if the condition is having a detrimental effect on the patient’s lifestyle. Treatment is based on the amount of disruption caused by the patient´s symptoms, how advanced that patient’s condition is, and how severe the condition has become. There’s no guarantee that medication will help reduce the symptoms, although treatment usually does help to make life more comfortable for the patient.

Causes Parkinson’s disease

What causes PD is not known, there may be genetic causality, but the main pathological process involves degeneration of the SUBSTANTIA NIGRA, which is situated in the basal ganglia and is an area rich in dopamine cells. Dopamine is one of the major neurotransmitters, or naturally occurring chemicals, found in the brain. In PD there is a major depletion of dopamine, especially apparent in the fiber projection from the substantia nigra to the corpus striatum. Dopamine is believed to be the main, but not the only, neurotransmitter involved in PD.

There are some known toxins that can cause parkinsonism, most notoriously a chemical called MPTP, found as an impurity in some illegal drugs. Parkinsonian symptoms appear within hours of ingestion, and are permanent. MPTP may exert its effects through generation of toxic molecular fragments called free radicals, and reducing free radicals has been a target of several experimental treatments for PD using antioxidants.

Early loss of mental capacities is uncommon. However, persons with severe Parkinson’s may have overall mental deterioration (including dementia and hallucinations). Dementia can also be a side effect of some of the medications used to treat the disorder.

Parkinson’s in children appears to occur when nerves are not as sensitive to dopamine, rather than damage to the area of brain that produces dopamine. Parkinson’s in children is rare.

Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms

What are the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

Tremors — rhythmic movements or shaking, especially in the hands and particularly when they are at rest

Rigid limbs and trunk — muscle tenseness, stiffness, aching, or weakness

Slowness of movement — difficulty beginning a task, such as washing or dressin

Bradykinesia is the phenomenon of a person experiencing slow movements. In addition to slow movements, a person with bradykinesia will probably also have incomplete movement, difficulty initiating movements and sudden stopping of ongoing movement. People who have bradykinesia may walk with short, shuffling steps (this is called festination). Bradykinesia and rigidity can occur in the facial muscles, reducing a person’s range of facial expressions and resulting in a “mask-like” appearanc

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment

Drugs that replace dopamine are the most effective treatment. These drugs are combinations of levodopa, which breaks down in the body to form dopamine, and a chemical that ensures there is the right amount of dopamine in the brain. They are effective at treating symptoms and can provide long-term improvement, although there are some side-effects. These include nausea, dizziness and constipation. Also, they can cause long-term problems such as unwanted movements of the face and limbs (dyskinesia) and they may become less effective over time, with symptoms fluctuating suddenly – often called the on-off syndrome.

Modifying your activities and your home, such as simplifying your daily activities and changing the location of furniture so that you can hold on to something as you move around the house.

Network Diagnostics in Windows Vista

Network Diagnostic Tools in Windows Vista

In the Network Sharing Center there is a Diagnose and Repair link that will scan your system for network issues. This diagnostic pings the remote host. If it is not found, you have the option to reset the network adapter Local Area Connection.

In addition to the automated Network Diagnostics interface, several tools are included with Windows Vista that can be used to test network components and connectivity.

Basic Tools

The following tools are fundamental in connectivity and name resolution troubleshooting. In addition, they are useful when troubleshooting failures with applications that communicate on the network or Internet.

Ipconfig

The Ipconfig command line tool displays all current TCP/IP network configuration values. Used without parameters, the ipconfig command displays the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters. In addition, you can use the following commands:

ipconfig /all – If you want to see more detailed information on the configuration for all interfaces on the computer, use this command.

ipconfig /release – This command releases any DHCP addresses assigned to interfaces on the computer. You can typically use it before the next command.

ipconfig /renew – This command causes the DHCP client service to request network addresses for all network connections. It is useful when you encounter connectivity problems and suspect a bad address. It is also used when troubleshooting name resolution failures to ensure the interface has the correct DNS server addresses assigned.

ipconfig /flushdns – This command clears the local DNS resolver cache. When you connect to machines by name, the DNS client software on the computer stores names and IP addresses as they are resolved. This is so that the name can be resolved without sending a repeat request to the DNS server. If a remote computer’s IP address changes, outdated information in this cache can cause connections by name to fail. Run this command on the local machine to clear the cache.

Ping

The ping command verifies IP-level connectivity to another TCP/IP computer by sending ICMP Echo Request messages. The receipt of corresponding Echo Reply messages is displayed along with round-trip times.

Ping is the primary TCP/IP command used to troubleshoot connectivity, reachability, and name resolution.

Because firewalls typically block ICMP traffic, ping does not receive a response from a system with a firewall configured. Check the firewall settings to ensure Ping or ICMP Echo is enabled while you are troubleshooting.

Tracert

The Trace Route (Tracert.exe) command determines the path taken to a destination by sending ICMP Echo Request messages to the destination with incrementally increasing Time to Live (TTL) field values. The path displayed is the list of near-side router interfaces of the routers in the path between a source host and a destination. The near-side interface is the interface of the router closest to the sending host in the path.

This command is useful for troubleshooting connectivity failures when you can ping the default gateway but cannot ping Internet servers. Such a situation can indicate a failure in the routing from the client machine to the Internet.

Running Tracert returns data on the failure indicating which hop in the routing is dropping the traffic. When used for Internet connectivity troubleshooting, the data gathered is often used to work with the ISP to resolve such routing issues. The output should identify the router at which the problem occurs.

Drugs, Gate Pass to a Cool Lifestyle?

A Drug is any chemical substance which when taken alters the moods, perception and behavior. Drug addiction refers to the physiological dependency on drugs and the person experiences withdrawal symptoms like fever, shivering, nausea, insomnia etc, Drug dependency is the dependence a person develops on the drugs, this dependency is not only a physiological dependence but also psychological dependence. When a person gets dependent on a drug, they get a craving for it, and if the person is unable to fulfill this craving, he/she becomes angry, frustrated or depressed.

Drug abuse denotes an excessive use of drugs which is likely to produce a habit and an intensive desire to consume more drugs. It may lead to drug dependency. Drug tolerance means that the person has reached a threshold, and the level of drug intake has gone high and the person requires more and more quantity of drug to get the feeling of euphoria.
It is interesting to know that the usage of drugs is not a new phenomenon. In the prehistoric times drugs were made from extracts of leaves and were used to relieve body aches and pains.

Drugs can be classified into four types:
Narcotic: It can be of different types, to begin with there are opium which are seeds that are collected from coffee seeds. Then there is morphine which is present in opium, initially it was used in medication as a pain killer in injuries or diseases like cancer but it resulted in drowsiness and excessive sleepiness. In order to reduce this effect, through a chemical process the two properties of painkiller and sedative ness were separated. This separation of the properties of morphine caused a disaster in medical science. The strong sedative property of morphine is heroin, which is highly addictive and produces drug dependence. Brown sugar is a unadulterated, unrefined form of heroin, it is usually mixed with class power etc, due to this it is cheep.

Stimulants: Stimulants are used to activate or stimulate the nervous system. It helps a person reach a stage of charged energy; hence it is commonly used by sports persons. Some stimulants are caffeine, cocaine, steroids, etc.

Depressants: They have the opposite effects to stimulants, depressants slowdown and deactivate the nervous system. The person feels sleepy, dull, inactive and the like. It reduces the stress and anxiety, some type of depressants is valium, alcohol, tranquillizers.

Hallucinogens: These kinds of drugs produce hallucinations that are perceived or see things which do not exist. Some types of hallucinogens are LSD, marijuana leaves, marijuana seeds, and hash.

I often wonder why any one use drugs would. What are the reasons behind taking them? It is off late that I heard about many young people being caught taking drugs and was arrested for the same. Here are some reasons why people may use drugs.

The highest population of drug users is among the youth of today. Initial curiosity and experimentation is one cause to drug intake, the youth today wants to try new things, have new thrills and want to experiment with different things. By chance they try drugs and get fixed with the feeling of euphoria. Once addicted there is no turning back for them. Another reason is peer pressure. Everyone wants to be liked, admired and given a lot of attention. If a boy or a girl is got in to the company of others who use and abuse drugs, they feel compelled to use drugs just so they are accepted and thought of as “cool”. They don’t want to loose friends nor do they want others to think of them as looser or rejects so they circum under the pressure of peers. The same is true of people of any age group. Sometimes when going through a mid life crises many men and women want to try new things, something they had never done before or were denied when young. The 20th century has developed the world at an ever increasing rate. The fast life, the tough competition to be the best, high standard of living and the ever growing expenses cause much tension, anxiety and frustration. High cases of divorces and failed relationship are just some of the negative outcomes of our fast paced life. Unfortunately some people find it hard to deal with these pressures in life, and resort to drugs to escape from failure and the responsibilities of everyday life. Sometimes loneliness and depression causes people to use drugs. Children, especially adolescents imitate and idolize their parents. Therefore if there is a drug user in the family, chances of the child to use them becomes high. In such families the values towards the use to drugs is also different. When a person is suffering from a fatal disease or has lost hope and the wish to live resort to the use of drugs to forget the pain. Finally, the most unfortunate cause of drug intake is the cheep and easy availability of drugs. This easy access to drug users and drug takers lead to high drug addiction and drug abuse. I remember once my young niece asked me why is taking drugs so bad. She told me her teacher told her taking drugs is bad but she couldn’t understand why. Unfortunately it’s the same story with many others.

There are various effects of drugs; lets classify these into physiological effects, psychological and social effects.

Physiological effect
Effect of drug on our bodies is direct. You may notice symptoms like lack of apatite (no hunger), unusual weight loss, bronchitis (lung disease), bad nutrition level, problem of lever, and lack of personal hygiene (shabby appearance).

Psychological effect
Our mind also gets affected by drugs, but this is indirectly and untapped. You would notice that a person on drugs suffer from depressions, lack of sleep or they even become paranoid.

Social effects
The effect of drugs on society is indirect. When addicted the persons needs more finances to buy more and more drugs to fulfill their craving, when the money is not available it leads to stealing, prostitution and sometimes even murders, hence, leading to a high crime rate. Besides this, addiction can also lead to poor interpersonal relationships those results in bad relationships and sometimes even divorces. Hence, when a person takes drugs they not only harm themselves but also the people around them who they love and care for and also the society at large.

The using and misusing and abusing of drugs can be prevented in several ways like:
Awareness, the most important step towards the prevention of drugs is education people about the bad effects of drugs and their harmfulness by means of lectures, mass media, seminars and workshops.
Make punishment sever, if a person is caught with even 1 gram of drugs in Japan the punishment is 7 years of imprisonment. When people fear the system they would stop using drugs.
Provide a good family life, when a person is surrounded with a good family support system and understanding loving family they would not want to use drugs.

Now that you know what drugs are, and have read about their effects and ways of prevention lets look at some treatments that are possible for people who wish to recover form addiction:
Hospitalization: A person who is physically and psychologically dependent needs to be hospitalized and kept under supervision and is treated for the withdrawal symptoms.
Aversion therapy: under this therapy the user is given painful shocks and this creates a haltered and aversion towards drugs.
Psychotherapy: A psychiatrist treats the user by trying to figure out the root cause behind the use of drugs. And counseling is done to find a satisfying solution.
Narcotics Anonymous: it is an organization of ex- drug users who help others recover by regularly meeting and sharing problems. It is a social support system which gives the user a new perspective on his/ her circumstances and life
Rehabilitation: A person who is discharged from the hospital after a treatment for drugs is usually taken to rehabilitation centers. After a treatment if a person goes back to the same way of life that caused his to be a drug addict in the first place would lead to a relapse and the person would resort to drugs again. So usually after a treatment in the hospital a person usually goes for rehabilitation where the person would keep them self occupied with work and vocational training and learn new and better ways of life and dealing and coping with stressful situations, usually these centers have a psychiatrist or a psychologist who work with them to build a better behavior patter, after a period of time the person is discharged with a certificate stating that they have fully recovered from drug use.
