CPAP Mask Skin Irritation

Many times a large percentage of CPAP users experience some form of skin irritation while on CPAP therapy. The spectrum of irritation runs from a mild rash along the perimeter of the mask skirt to complete breakdown of the skin, especially on the bridge of the nose, leading to an ulcerated condition. The problem that many CPAP users face is related to a cycle that starts with over-tightening the mask in order to achieve a better fit. When a CPAP user does not achieve a good seal they begin to over-tighten the mask, which then results in more abrasion against the skin along the perimeter of the mask skirt. In addition, the build-up of facial oils, dirt and perspiration contribute to an increase in skin irritation. The typical advice given to many CPAP users in this position is to thoroughly wash the mask and the face prior to mask fitting for the night. The problem with this situation is that many CPAP users that are beginning to experience skin rash or irritation will need to use some kind of facial cream to alleviate the irritation, however, the use of cream will contribute to a loss of seal as the mask skirt needs to be free from foreign substances. This cycle can be a slippery slope which leads to abandonment of therapy if there is not an early intervention to prevent the user from ceasing CPAP therapy.

Another related, and more extreme version of skin irritation while using CPAP therapy is related to a dermatological condition that a certain percentage of CPAP users experience. A certain percentage of CPAP users find that they are allergic to the materials in the mask skirt, leading to some form of “dermatitis” which results from contact with the silicone or other materials in the mask skirt. In this scenario, many CPAP users may find that they experience a range of skin breakouts, rashes, ulcerations and what is sometimes referred to as a “burn.” For these users, the hunt for a mask that does not cause this kind of reaction is many times an unsuccessful one as the CPAP user finds that they are allergic to most of the mask skirt material compositions on the market. Some CPAP users may find relief with one particular style of mask, only to find that later the new mask eventually causes irritation as well. The prognosis for these individuals is not good if they do not receive the required intervention, as this path tends to lead toward abandonment of therapy.

Ringworm – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin; the medical name for this fungus is Tinea + the area of the skin where it is found. For example, Tinea capitis is ringworm on the head, and Tinea Corporis is ringworm on the body. Tinea Barbae is ringworm that is on the “beard” area of the face.

Tinea Barbae at one point was called Barber’s itch, named so because the men were going to the barber daily and probably got the fungal infection there. Athlete’s foot (Tinea Pedis) (found between the toes) and jock itch (Tinea Cruris) (found in the folds of the groin area) are also types of ringworm infections.

There are different names for the umbrella infection ringworm depending upon where the infection is located. Ringworm that appears on the scalp and neck is called tinea capitis, while ringworm found on the torso is called tinea corporis. Ringworm that appears on the feet and ankles is called tinea pedis, though it is more commonly known as Athlete’s Foot.

Causes

Although the world is full of yeasts, molds, and fungi, only a few cause skin problems. These agents are called the dermatophytes, which means “skin fungi.” Skin fungi can only live on the dead layer of keratin protein on top of the skin. They rarely invade deeper into the body and cannot live on mucous membranes, such as those in the mouth or vagina.

Symptoms

The patches of ringworm on the body are usually round or oval, with raised pink and scaly rings which show a clean space in the centre. The itching in the infected parts helps to spread infection through the nails to other healthy part of the body. If it is not treated for a long time, the infection becomes chronic and is then difficult to get rid of
Tinea faciei: Ringworm on the face except in the area of the beard. On the face, ringworm is rarely ring-shaped. Characteristically, it causes red, scaly patches with indistinct edges.
Tinea manus: Ringworm involving the hands, particularly the palms and the spaces between the fingers. It typically causes thickening (hyperkeratosis) of these areas, often on only one hand. Tinea manus is a common companion of tinea pedis (ringworm of the feet). It is also called tinea manuum.
Diagnosis
Ringworm is very easy to diagnose. Usually, the characteristics of ringworm i.e. the round red scaly ring are enough just on their own. However, doctors could also take a scraping off the affected skin or in the case of head or scalp ringworm a hair off the patient and then look at it under a microscope where confirmation of the diagnosis can be carried out.
Treatment
While maintaining hygiene of skin , and taking care not to share towels help, what our skin needs is a strong, natural external support to provide a natural boost and immunity. Skin Aura is a powerful blend of natural herbs proven for their therapeutic properties. This blend, not only cures and soothes, but also does not have any side effects because it is 100 % Natural (unlike several over-the-counter anti-acne drugs and steroidal or cortisone creams).

Best Way To Treat Seasonal Allergies

Each year close to spring, summer, or fall people feel their eyes start to water and itch and their nose commence to run. These are only the first symptoms that are made by seasonal allergies. These kinds of allergies are rather standard and impact a good deal of people in the world.

For numerous people the symptoms may be very moderate and for others they are so intense that they push them to stay home from school or work because of headaches and the inability to think. These allergies are caused by the pollen from trees, grass, flowers, and weeds in the region that you reside in.

There are many contrasting types of medicines that you are able to utilize which will assist you to handle and fight against seasonal allergies. Some people buy the over the counter medications first because they are low-priced and serve to treat the moderate symptoms including; runny nose, sneezing, itchy throat, and itchy and water eyes.

However, not everyone responds well to these medicines and necessitates the use of something much better. These people ordinarily should visit their physician when the symptoms are so terrible that they do not have the ability to do specific things. There the doctor will examine them and choose what best prescription medicine they call for.

Those who need to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms without needing to utilize unique medicines can try a few of the several natural treatments. There are a mixture of supplements that will help to fight against the symptoms utilizing natural methods. Numerous of the most ordinary include honey, nettle, and ginko biloba.

Are You Too Irritable?

Being moderately irritable every once in a while is one thing, but feeling irritable for extended periods of time is another. To be irritable means that someone may be feeling overly sensitive to some kind of stimulation through one or more of their senses, such as sight or sound. For example, someone who is highly irritable might find the tapping of a keyboard more irritating than usual. It could be a sign that the individual exhibiting or feeling the sensitivity and irritability could be overworked, exhausted, stressed or suffering from withdrawal when trying to stop an addiction. As mentioned before, many who suffer from some irritability may have a reasonable explanation for it and their feeling is only temporary; however, for those who don’t seem to have an explanation for their irritable mood that seems to continue for an extended period of time, help might not be a bad idea. When talking about a more serious case of irritation that never seems to come to an end, it could be caused by something else other than fatigue, too much work or lack of a vacation. It could be that the person is being affected by a stress they can’t get away from, such as something more psychological. This is not to say there is anything wrong with the individual, just that irritation may be a symptom of a more serious situation. For instance, someone who is suffering from a type of depression may start to exhibit signs of increased irritation. In fact, increased irritability is a common symptom of many forms of depression. In this case, the depression needs to be addressed. Someone who is feeling more irritable should stop for a moment and just ask themselves why they may be feeling this way. If it is a friend, then sitting them down for a moment over a coffee and bringing their change in mood to their attention can be helpful for them; in either case, it can be a change that the irritated person may not fully realize. The first step to helping one’s self or their friend is to get the person to admit there might be something wrong. The second step is to find the right kind of help. Ignoring or self-medicating the problem is not going to help. At most, it will only act as a temporary band-aid for a short while before becoming a part of the problem in the future. While many will admit there might be something, like depression, causing their irritable moods, the idea of going to a counselor or therapist in person is completely out of the question. Whatever the reason, whether it is discomfort or embarrassment, there is another alternative that many are more open to. Online counseling is becoming more popular every day. Not only is an online counselor easy to get a hold of, but a person can go through online therapy from the comfort of their own home. More are going online every day because it is easy, confidential and convenient. What Causes Depression

Introduction

Unlike with some other illnesses or disorders, there is no simple explanation as to what causes depression. In general, depression is caused by a mixture of ‘pressure’ or ‘strain’, which can be mild or severe, combined with a vulnerability or predisposition to depression, which, too, can range from mild to severe. For each type of depression, there are likely to be different mixtures of causes. For psychotic or melancholic depression, physical and biological factors are generally more relevant. By contrast, for non?melancholic depression, the role of personality and stressful life events are generally far more relevant.

Genetics

Contrary to the popular view that depression is due to life experiences and/or personality factors, there is strong evidence that genetics are a significant factor in a person’s predisposition towards developing depression.

Depression can be inherited. The genetic risk of developing clinical depression is about 40%, with the remaining 60% being due to factors in the individual’s own environment. Depression is unlikely to occur without life events, but the risk of developing depression as a result of some such event is strongly genetically determined.

Biochemical

Our knowledge of the human brain is still fairly limited, therefore we do not really know what actually happens in the brain to cause depression. It is likely that with most instances of clinical depression, neurotransmitter function is disrupted. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that carry signals from one part of the brain to the next. There are many neurotransmitters, serving different purposes, however three important ones that affect a person’s mood are serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine.

In normal brain function, neurotransmitters jump from one nerve cell to the next, with the signal being as strong in the second and subsequent cells as it was in the first. However, in people who are depressed, the mood regulating neurotransmitters fail to function normally, so that the signal is either depleted or disrupted before passing to the next nerve cell. In non?melancholic depression, it is likely that the transmission of serotonin is reduced or less active, whereas in people with melancholic and psychotic depression, the neurotransmitters noradrenaline and dopamine are more likely to have failed or be functioning abnormally.

Illness

In a simple sense, illness can lead to depression through the lowered mood that we can all experience when we are unwell, in pain or discomfort, confined, and less able to do the things we enjoy. Illness can also change the body’s functioning in a way that leads to depression. Even if the illness isn’t making us feel down we still end up with a depression. For example:

– it is known that certain cancers can produce a depression – in these cases the person might be

quite unaware that they have the disease

– certain medical conditions can lead to mania

– compromised immune functioning might play a part in the emergence of depression, although

further research is needed to establish this link.

Ageing brain

As we age, our brain’s capacity (in terms of general functioning) reduces, while certain neurotransmitters (which influence mood state) can become affected. Three reasons for these changes are worth mentioning in relation to depression.

Some elderly people who are developing a dementia may at some stage (often early on) develop a severe depression for the first time. The depression is commonly of a psychotic or melancholic type and reflects disruption of circuits linking certain basal ganglia and frontal regions of the brain. Sometimes these changes merely reflect an ageing process, particularly in people who are vulnerable to this kind of ‘wear and tear’. In others, however, high blood pressure or mini?strokes (often unnoticed by the individual and their family) may contribute. Good blood pressure control can reduce the chance of depression in some people with this problem.

Gender

Gender is a partial, but incomplete, explanation of why a person develops depression. Essentially, equal numbers of men and women develop melancholic depression. However, studies have shown that there is a much greater likelihood of women developing non?melancholic depression than men.

There are a number of explanations for this, among them: women are more likely than men to ‘internalising’ stress, thereby placing them at greater risk of developing depression; additionally, women with unsatisfactory marriages or a number of young children are highly overrepresented among samples of depressed people, suggesting a sex?role component or a reduced inability to seek assistance or support.

Hormonal factors commencing in puberty may account for the increased chance in women of developing anxiety – a precursor to depression – or depression. While sex hormone (or biological) differences may create a greater chance among women of developing depression, certain social factors still need to come into play before depression will be experienced.

Stress

It is important to recognise that nearly every individual can be stressed and depressed by certain events. Most people get over the stress or depression within days or weeks while others do not. Ways that stress can lead to depression include the following:

–          Past and long?standing stresses can increase the chance of an individual developing depression in later years. An example is an abusive or uncaring parent, which may result in the child developing a low self?esteem and thus being vulnerable to develop depression in adult life.

–          Most individuals who develop non?melancholic depression usually describe an important and understandable life event that occurred before the depression started.

–          The events that are most likely to ‘trigger’ depression are ones where the individual’s self?esteem is put at risk, compromised or devalued. For most adults, self?esteem is closely linked to an intimate relationship as well as in other important areas, such as a job. Thus, the break?up of a relationship or a marriage is a very common trigger for depression.

–          Other individuals develop depression when they feel a sense of ‘shame’, such as when they feel that they have not lived up to their own or others’ expectations, thus reducing their self?esteem.

Our researchers have confirmed an important link between a genetic marker (involving the serotonin transporter) and risk to depression.

The impact of life events upon melancholic depression is not always clear. They may serve to trigger the depression – or rekindle it – rather than cause it. If you are depressed, it can be helpful to find out whether stress contributes to the depression either by:

–          its severity – so that you feel under ‘too much stress’ – in which case generic stress management programs may be helpful; or

–          its particular meaning to you: if a particular event or set of circumstances is likely to trigger stress in you and may do so repeatedly if you are re?exposed to those triggers, it can be helpful to seek sophisticated counselling or psychotherapy to identify what those triggers are and why they produce the stressful reaction.

Personality

The Black Dog Institute has shown that people with the following personality types are more at risk of developing depression than others, those with:

1. high levels of anxiety, which can be experienced as an internalised ‘anxious worrying’ style or as a more externalised ‘irritability’

2. shyness, expressed as ‘social avoidance’ and/or ‘personal reserve’

3. self?criticism or low self?worth

4. interpersonal sensitivity

5. perfectionism

6. a ‘self?focused’ style

Those who are high on the first four factors are at distinctly greater risk to depression (especially non?melancholic depression). ‘Perfectionism is somewhat protective against the onset of depression but, if depression occurs, it can promote longer episodes. Those who have a high ‘self?focused’ style are likely to be at greater risk for brief depressive episodes only. There appears to be little effect of temperament or personality on the development of melancholic depression.

Understanding What Causes Phobias and Fears

Phobias are extreme reactions to ordinary things and events but if you have never had a phobia yourself, it can be difficult to understand when a friend or loved one develops an irrational fear of something.

Phobias appear bizarre to most people, and many sufferers, especially teens, are simply told to stop, even though their fear is out of their control. It is not difficult to see how a phobia sufferer could be suspected of acting out for attention. After all, most people never experience the level of fear that a phobia sufferer deals with when they have a phobic episode. Sufferers may know how strange they are acting, but are powerless to change their feelings because the fears are so irrational.

Understanding what a phobia sufferer goes through is important, so that you can relate to their experience and know what to do if they have a phobic response when you are around.

Although everyone is a little different, there are sets of physical reactions that go along with a phobic episode. Physical reactions include sweating, increased heart rate, nervousness, and some people can have a full-blown panic attack. Having a phobic reaction can be very confusing because the person reacts to something harmless as if it puts them in a life or death situation. A phobia sufferer may realize that their feelings are not justified, but they are still overtaken by feelings of panic and dread.

When you are under a lot of stress, your body experiences a biological process called the fight or flight response. This is basically the product of your brain perceiving a serious threat and adding adrenaline to your bloodstream, making you temporarily stronger, quicker, and more capable to act instinctively to overcome a potentially life threatening situation. The fight or flight response happens at various levels depending upon the perceived threat. Sometimes a little adrenaline is added to the bloodstream, while at other times your body is flooded with adrenaline.

Back in the times when our world was not so civilized, and they were continually struggling to survive, our ancient ancestors relied heavily on this response for their own survival. Even though the fight or flight response is not as important nowadays, it is a natural reaction that can be very useful, or harmful if it is triggered unnecessarily. This same response is responsible for reports of folks lifting very heavy objects off people and other extraordinary physical feats.

In wild animals, the fight or flight response is even more marked. For example, it is not uncommon for a deer that has been shot through both lungs and the heart to run the length of a football pitch, or for several miles as if these vital organs were not hit.

When somebody has a true phobia, these are the powerful feelings that they have to contend with, but rather than escaping an impending danger, they are reacting to a spider, snake, clown, or another stimulus that triggers their phobia. What is worse is that phobias strike in every day places such as work, school, or social occasions where the fight or flight response is very inappropriate.

There is a long list of different phobias, but most are the result of something from a person’s past or a fear that has been instilled in them. It makes no difference if the sufferer knows they are overreacting to a certain trigger, since they are powerless to stop their phobic reaction.

Treatment methods do exist, but a little bit of understanding goes a long way. Knowing more about phobias can only help if you know someone who if suffering from one.

Teen Anxiety Attacks: Signs, Symptoms and Remedies

All teens, just like any adult, feel anxious from time to time as a normal reaction to stressors. Going on a date, speaking in public, meeting new people, competing in sports, performing on stage, and taking exams are some of the things that make us feel apprehensive.

However, some teens experience severe anxiety than others. Some even feel severe anxiety by just thinking about the situation that has yet to happen. And when someone experiences episodes of panics or develops irrational fear over certain events or problems, it is known as anxiety attack.

What are the signs and symptoms of anxiety attacks?

Different people react to situations differently. Hence, there are really no uniform symptoms of anxiety attack that are present to all.

Nonetheless, teens may show some or all of the following signs: shortness of breath, chest pain, heart burn, smothering sensation, sweating, shivering, chilling or shaking, numbness in the head and face, neck and shoulder pain, palpitation, derealisation or depersonalization, hyperactivity, dry mouth, fear of going crazy, headaches, stomach pain, and other body pains.

Take note that some of the mentioned signs and symptoms can be caused by other medical, psychological, and physical conditionals. They can also be the effects of current medical treatment, side effects of certain medications or the body’s natural reaction to stimuli.

When is too much anxiety too much?

Excess anxiety is when you feel worry, anxious and afraid for no apparent reason at all. Under normal circumstances, teens worry because of specific things (like what was mentioned above). But there is an obvious difference between healthy anxiety and irrational anxiousness.

Teens during an anxiety attack tend to react disproportionately over simple things or events that seem not to cause any excessive anxious reaction to others. In other words, too much anxiety is an unusual reaction over simple or trivial things.

What are the available remedies for anxiety attacks?

Medication

Severe cases of anxiety attacks may require prescription drugs to control or reduce its symptoms. Prescription drugs may be antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Antidepressants may take some weeks to take effect so it is important to continuously take medications and not just during an attack.

Benzodiazepines, on the other hand, have quick relief effects, usually within 30 minutes, but they are highly addictive, thus it should be used with caution. Remember that medication should not be the first treatment option as there are other effective ways to combat the effects of anxiety.

Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective ways to treat anxiety attacks or any anxiety disorder for that matter. CBT focuses on the thinking pattern of the patients and replaces negative thoughts with positive ones.

Exposure therapy exposes the person to the physical sensations of panic in a safe and controlled environment. Through repeated exposure, patients gain greater self control and more confidence in facing fearful situation.

Natural Remedies

Proper diet, regular exercise and sufficient sleep bring balance to the body, which help reduce the episodes of anxiety attacks.

Massage, aromatherapy, relaxation and breathing techniques promote wellness, relax muscles and ease muscle tension.

Herbal treatments naturally relieve stress and restlessness associated with anxiety, thus solving anxiety problem.

Thinking positively and talking to a supportive person can help reduce the occurrence of anxiety attacks.

But what is the most critical factor in preventing teen anxiety attacks?

The key is to get rid of the ‘fear’ of having another anxiety attack. This fear builds upon already heightened anxiety levels to such an extent that anxiety attacks can be triggered. This can be seen as an ever increasing ‘cycle of anxiety’.

To discover the simple ‘ONE MOVE’ technique that will eliminate your fear factor and so break your vicious cycle of anxiety at last, go here now http://eliminatepanicattacks.blogspot.com and prepare to get your old self back again.

Another type of insomnia is called short-term insomnia and it last for maximum up to three weeks. The last type of insomnia is called chronic insomnia. This type of insomnia is characterized by the person having atleast three sleepless nights in a week for more than a month. Usually, it causes several consequences in his work.

It is therefore important to first identify if you have the symptoms of insomnia, which are actually very obvious and people suffering from insomnia usually do not have to go through a symptoms list as they already know from their sleepless nights that they suffer from insomnia. The next thing that has to be done is to identify which type of insomnia you have. Once this is done, you can seek professional help if it is the last category. If you are suffering from transient or short-term insomnia, you will be surprised to know that it can almost be eliminated if you remove stress from your life.

How to Prevent Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the nail grows into the soft skin of the nail bed (or the skin of the nail bed grows over the toenail). They usually affect the big toe, although ingrown nails can occur on any of the toes or fingers.  It is very common for ingrown toenails to become infected.  The surrounding skin will become red, swollen and sore to the touch.  Often pus or some kind of discharge will be released.

Ingrown toenails are a very common foot problem but the good news is that they are easily prevented.  A little proper foot hygiene will go a long way when it comes to safeguarding your feet against ingrown toenails.

The most common cause of ingrown toenails is ill-fitting footwear.  Shoes that are too tight (especially shoes with small toe boxes) will cramp your toes.  These cramped quarters apply pressure to the toenails; this pressure encourages the nails to grow into the skin.  Shoes that cause the feet to sweat excessively also tend to promote ingrown toenails.  When you keep your feet in a wet environment, the nail bed softens and swells.  This is why it is so important that athletic shoes are sized correctly (usually a half size larger to account for the swelling of the feet).  Athletic shoes that are sweaty and too tight are practically an invitation for ingrown toenails.

Proper nail trimming is also important.  Nails should be cut straight across.  Nails that are tapered on the edges (so that the nails appear rounded) will encourage the nail to grow into the skin of the nail bed.  Be careful that there is no shard or splinter on the side of your nail that will grow into the toe.  Toenails should not be cut too short.  A good rule of thumb is to cut the nail no shorter than the end of the toe. You don’t want the nail to be shorter than the skin surrounding it. Injury or trauma to the foot also may result in an ingrown toenail. Sometimes something as simple as stubbing your toe or dropping something on your foot can injure the tissue in such a way that the nail grows irregularly.

Finally, some people are genetically predisposed to ingrown toenails either because of the shape of their nail beds or the natural curve of their nails.  People with chronic ingrown toenails will want to consult a podiatrist about the best form of prevention and treatment.

Toenail Fungus – Toenail Fungus Remedies

Over 30 million people worldwide suffer from some sort of nail or nail fungus. The statistics are alarming to say the least. Nail and toe nail fungus can be as suttle as a yellowing or discoloring of the nail or toenail and as serious as the complete loss of, deformity of one or more nails on the hands, feet or both. Not too mention, if left unattended, the infection can be excruciatingly painful that could result in a visit to a doctor.

Caught early however, those who suffer a mild case of nail or foot fungus infections can treat the affected condition using a natural topical solution. Those suffering with nail or toe nail fungus may not see their condition extend beyond a mild case, in some cases, people have reported having the condition for more than 10yrs without it becoming too serious. Other people have reported that their condition is nothing more than an ugly discoloration of the nail or toenail, more of the nuisance than anything,

No matter how serious your case may be, it is usually accompanied by discoloring of the nail, crusty and bumpy in appearance and a discharge of a smelly odor, especially on the feet. Nail fungus usually spreads from one nail to another and may be passed on to others, friends, family members etc, so it’s not something that should be ignored.

There are many so called miracle cures and home remedies available and this information is readily available all over the Internet. Don’t be fooled into thinking that any of the home treatments work because most of the time they don’t and you will be very disappointed in the end when you see no results.

Taking the time to educate yourself is one of the best steps you can take in finding a cure. No two cures are alike, what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another but the important thing is to start your treatment early and not later. Nail or foot fungus is very curable, but it takes allot of time and patience to completely eliminate. Don’t start a treatment then decide not to follow though.. Doing so will spell failure and you will be very disappointed once again thinking that your treatment failed when in fact you did not take the time to apply a topical as directed. There are no overnight cures and you may not even see results in 2 week or even 4. Patience is a virtue in this case.

Should i consult my doctor? The answer to that question is quite obvious. If your having trouble walking, unable to put your shoes on, as is the case with a nail fungus infection or your condition seems serious, by all means do so. Be aware however that you may be placed on a medication such as Limasil which incidentally has been linked to liver damage and other unknown causes. This alone is enough to scare many people. The adverse affects of fungal mediation is still very unclear and many would much rather deal with their condition without a prescription then to actually start one. Limasil and other prescription treatments can take upwards of 6 months and cost thousands of dollars. Even then, there are no guarantees
and your condition could recur. The other problem being, millions of people have no health insurance. Recently, those statistics show that over 26 million Americans alone have no insurance whatsoever. No insurance means expensive treatments, treatments that many people can’t afford.

So what are the alternatives to prescription drugs? Well, a good topical that contains all naturals herbs, oils and vitamins can usually clear up the affected area but it does take time, usually 2 to 3 months, and can take even longer. As the fungus dies the new nail begins to appear and we all know how slowly nails grow. As the new nail appears it will look smooth and disease free. Treatment should continue until the entire nail has been replaced with the new nail.

One of the misconceptions about a nail and foot fungus is that it can’t be spread from one person to another. Actually, that is not the case. It is very easy to get a nail fungus infection and it’s common among those who have sweaty feet, share bathrooms, swimming pools, showers and locker rooms. Also people who do a lot of standing and are on their feet frequently, as in the case of runners, athletes and dancers are prone to infection. Individual who have a history of athlete’s foot, have manicure and pedicure in places where dirty nail files and in use or where unsanitary conditions exists, e.g. salons. These types of places are perfect mediums to harbor fungus spores. Senior citizens, who are about sixty five years old and above and people who have diabetes and other forms of circulatory diseases are also prone to all types of nail fungus.

Nail fungus cure: What ever treatment you choose, make sure that it includes natural ingredients such as Tree Tea Oils and vitamin E. Other ingredients such as Clove oil and Lemon grass oil add soothing relief. When searching for a treatment, be sure that your product contains two or more of these ingredients on the label. And most importantly, don’t skip on your application. If the label says apply 3 times a day then make sure you do so.

Important nail and foot fungus tips:

1) Try wearing natural cotton socks. It allows the feet to breathe.
2) Do not share towels or wash cloths with others; you may spread or collect spores.
3) Wear breathable shoes if you’re on your feet allot.
4) Ladies, do not use nail polish to hide your discolored toenails. Do not use nail polish until the disease is completely gone.
5) File the infected nail thin so that a local topical can penetrate the nail more effectively.
6) Caution in Gyms, wear flip flops in showers and always wear protective footwear when walking around in locker rooms, even while showering where many other do.
7) Reduce your intake of sugary foods. Some people suggest reducing sugar consumption which will make your body less capable of hosting fungi.

HEM to Rehab a Sprained Ankle

Everyone always hears the standard recommendation when they twist an ankle. Ice it and rest. This is often known as the R.I.C.E. System which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. While this is an O.K approach in the instant short term, there a re plenty of heavy lacks to this system of rehabilitation. They include :

Drawbacks of R.I.C.E. for a twisted ankle :

* customarily takes at least 2-8 weeks to heal.

* doesn’t increase range of motion.

* doesn’t correct neural damage.

* doesn’t buttress ankle.

* Increases possibility of ankle injury in the future.

* Increases chance of knee ( A.C.L. – Anterior Cruciate Ligament ) and hip injuries.

I have sprained my very own ankle a number of times during the past, because I play a lot of basketball. I have personally been throuugh all of the disappointment and agony that’s concerned with this sort of injury. Finally, I wondered if there was a better way to rehab myself then the old version of R.I.C.E. Since I could be a licensed trainer from one of the most prestigious fitness schedules in the united states, ( N.A.S.M. (National Academy of Sports Medicine), I already knew that there had to be an easier way. I just had to uncover it.

When you sprain an ankle, a lot of things happen. Beyond the clear swelling, rigidity, and bruising, there are 3 main issues that must be addressed to heal the ankle quickly and correctly :

1 ) The body has a tendency to heal very slowly. Left to itself, an ankle injury usually takes about 2-8 weeks to cure, depending on the severity of the injury. However when you actively rehabilitate it with specific exercises that fortify it and increase range of motion, the ankle replies very quickly and swelling goes down rapidly. My clients recover from a twisted ankle in days not weeks. They’re often walking typically inside 3-5 days after an ankle twist injury.

2) The ankle joint is weakened by the injury. If it’s not correctly rehabilitated, it’ll remain weak and may be very slow to cure. It will also be at uch greater risk of re-injury. You have got to strengthen the ligaments and muscles around the ankle joint. Since they have been damaged, they have to be stretched and strengthened in order to heal correctly. Further, by stretching and strengthening the ankle, we keep the blood moving in and out of that area which helps the ankle heal significantly faster.

3) After an ankle injury, there is a neural impairment. To explain, the communication between the nervous system and the ankle joint will be reduced. If this isn’t addressed, healing will naturally take much longer. Also, after you think your ankle is better, the neural impairment will continue, putting you in danger for injury in the future.

My system works to reduce swelling, bruising and pain while at the same time reinforcing the muscles around the ankle joint and augmenting suppleness. These aren’t contradictory things. You might imagine you only need rest and ice, but which will insure your recovery process is slow and incomplete. The ligaments need to be stretched and worked in such a fashion that the body will trigger the healing process. To paraphrase, the more flexible and powerful your ankle becomes, the quicker your body will work through the process of healing. you have to be extremely careful to not over-work the muscles by doing exercises that can overwork the muscles and possible cause more damage.

the better part about my program is that it is not just about speed. One of the unique things about my system is that it also repairs the neuromuscular damage from the injury. When you do damage to ligaments as in an ankle sprain, the nervous system and muscles in the ankle joint to speak as well anymore. If that isn’t addressed, then you may always have weaker, less flexible ankles that are in peril for future injury. In order to properly heal the ankle joint, we must first correct the diminished neural communication between the muscles and nervous system. This is totally addressed in my system with some incredibly easy and simple to do exercises.

Here are the main benefits of H.E.M. :

* agony free walking in days.

* Back to sports in roughly a week.

* seriously increases strength and pliability.

* Heals neuromuscular damage from the injury.

* seriously reduces your likelihood of future injury.

* Helps correct posture and muscle imbalances.

* May help significantly reduce knee, hip, back pain.

* Anyone can do it.

* It’s straightforward and only takes mins a day.

* Filled with top of the range pictures to insure straightforwardness of use.

Bruised Heels – Prevention & Treatment

Our feet take a pounding as we walk or run.  Up to 3 1/2 times our weight is thrust downward onto our heels with each step.  Consider the number of steps we take in a lifetime and it is no wonder our feet can feel sore or achy. As we get older, the fatty tissue on our heels and forefeet tends to decrease and with that, our natural shock absorption decreases.

Active people, especially those who regularly participate in sporting activities that require running and jumping are highly susceptible to Bruised Heels due to the constant pounding in the heel area.  If their shoes are worn or of poor quality so as to offer little heel cushioning, the risk is increased.

A bruised heel can not only be very tender but it can also take a long time to heal if the condition is not properly treated and the causing activity is not significantly decreased.  Rest, ice packs and over the counter medication such as ibuprofen will help to reduce soreness and inflammation but unless the offending activity is stopped, the condition will only worsen.

A bruised heel can be prevented by first wearing good quality shoes that offer some type of cushioning for the heel area.  The shoe Insoles should ideally have heel cupping as this type of foot bed insole will surround the fatty heel pad to help absorb shock and impact.

Complimenting the shoes with good quality Shoe Insoles will greatly help to prevent heel bruising as well as offer relief if the condition already exists. Spenco Gel Heel Cups offer superior shock absorption and cushioning for the heel.  The Superfeet Insoles are built with an encapsulating heel cup and the Spenco Polysorb Total Support Insoles, Polysorb Walker Runner Insoles and Women’s Total Support Insoles all have deep heel cupping and offer superb heel cushioning while also providing arch support to help restore and maintain proper foot arch function, balance, alignment and stability.

If your foot does not have a good heel cup, the fat pad will splay outward which reduces the natural shock absorption of your heel.  Less shock absorbing capabilities means more stress on your heel bone which results in bruised heels.

Spenco and Superfeet both offer excellent biomechanically shaped Insoles with deep heel cups to encapsulate the fat pad around the heel to allow shock absorption.

You do not have to endure the nagging pain of a bruised heel.  Prevention and relief is a simple solution away.  For more detailed information about the Spenco Gel Heel Cups, the Spenco Heel Cupping Insoles and the Superfeet Insoles, visit The Insole Store today!

Some Common Problems Associated With Spinal Cord

<!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } –>

The spine is what determines how comfortably we walk, stand, sit or even rest. There are some problems associated with the spinal cord that cause a great deal of discomfort to the patient. Some of them are discussed below.

Cervical spondylosis

A common symptom is pain in the neck. It may be a natural consequence of aging for those above 50 years of age. Like the other parts of our body, bones in the neck also tend to progressively degenerate as we age. Cervical spondylosis may be a result of bony spurs besides problems with ligaments and discs. The spinal canal may tend to narrow leading to compression of the spinal cord which may pinch the nerves leading to the arms. Spinal cord compression can be a result of injuries as well. This may lead to pain ranging from mild discomfort to severe dysfunction.

Spinal cord damage

There are many ways in which the spinal cord can get damaged. It can get cut in an accident, compressed or get destroyed due to an infection. The spinal cord may also get damaged when its blood supply gets cut off, or it is affected by diseases like cervical spondylosis, spinal cord cysts or multiple sclerosis which tend to alter its nerve function.

Bony Dysfunction

Following spinal cord infection, joint as well as muscle contractures can occur rapidly which tends to complicate rehabilitation later on. Early stabilization of the spine fracture means early mobilization leading to fewer complications. Each complication increases the hospital stay as well as increasing the rehab stay.

Cardiovascular Disease

A major long-term risk of spinal cord injury is cardiovascular disease. People who are suffering from spinal cord injury tend to lead rather sedentary lives and are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Thus, careful assessment of cardiovascular function as well as the encouragement of exercise programs is a necessary long-term aspect of spinal cord injury management and care.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a potentially severe complication of spinal cord injury. In fact, DVT in the lower leg is nearly universal during the early phase of rehabilitation. Thromboses in the thigh is of a great concern as there is a high risk of it becoming dislodged and passing through the vascular tree to the lungs, where a major obstruction of the arteries which lead to the lung can even be fatal.

Heterotopic Ossification (HO) and Cysts

Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the development of abnormal bone in non-skeletal tissue, mainly in the region of the hip and knee joints. It can occur in many spinal cord injured individuals and tends to develop within days following the injury or it may even take place after several months. Though there is usually no significant additional physical limitation, but in some patients, HO may lead to a major limitation of joint motion.

Symptoms include difficulty in the ability to perform activities of daily living, especially those activities which require bending at the hips. The other symptoms include increased spasticity, swelling of the entire leg, as well as elevated temperature.

These are but a few problems related to the dysfunction of the spinal cord itself and complications arising out of the dysfunction.
