Two percutaneous liver biopsies and a mini-laparotomy with wedge biopsy and portal node biopsy were performed. The liver biopsies excluded lymphoma but all showed necrotizing granulomas with infiltration of eosinophils.

It seems probable that in Arsenic iod, we have a remedy most closely allied to manifestations of tuberculosis. In the early stages of tuberculosis, even though there is an afternoon rise in temperature, Ars jod is very effective. It will be indicated by a profound prostration, rapid, irritable pulse, recurring fever and sweats, emaciation; tendency to diarrhea. This remedy is indicated in tuberculosis patients in cases of emaciation with good appetite; in amenorrhœa, with anæmic palpitation and dyspnœa. Cough is dry with difficult expectoration.3. Bacillinum [Baci]
 Baci has been employed successfully in the treatment of tuberculosis; its good effects are seen in the change of the sputum, which becomes decreased and more aerated and less purulent. The patient expectorates less. On examination patient has bubbling rales and muco-purulent expectoration. This muco-purulent expectoration of TB patients is poly-bacillary; it is a mixture of diverse species and hence Bacillinum is truly indicated in cases of MDR TB (Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis). Often relieves congestion of the lungs, thus paving way for other remedies in Tuberculosis. 4. Tuberculinum [Tub]
Tub is of undoubted value in the treatment of tuberculosis. It is especially adapted to the light-complexioned, narrow-chest subjects who have Lax fiber, low recuperative powers, and very susceptible to changes in the weather. Patient is always tired; motion causes intense fatigue; there is aversion to work; wants constant changes. When symptoms are constantly changing and well-selected remedies fail to improve, and cold is taken from the slightest exposure. Expectoration is thick with easy and profuse discharge. There is also shortness of breath with sensation of suffocation, even with plenty of fresh air. Patient longs for cold air. There is hard, hacking cough, profuse sweating and loss of weight, rales all over chest. Deposits begin in apex of lung. 5. Stannum metallicum [Stannum met]
The chief action of Stannum met is centered upon the respiratory organs. Debility is very marked when Stannum is the remedy, especially the debility of chronic bronchial and pulmonary conditions, characterized by profuse muco-purulent discharges upon tuberculosis basis. Violent, dry cough in evening until midnight. Cough excited by laughing, singing, talking; worse lying on right side. During day, with copious green, sweetish, expectoration. Chest feels weak; can hardly talk. Respiration short, oppressive; stitches in left side when breathing and lying on same side.6. Allium Sativum [Allium Sativa]
Allium sativa is mainly adapted to fleshy subjects with digestive and respiratory affections. Pulmonary tuberculosis with constant rattling of mucus in bronchi. Cough in the morning after leaving bedroom, with mucous expectoration, which is tenacious and difficult to raise. Dilated bronchi with fetid expectoration and darting pain in chest.7. Calcarea fluorica [Calc fluor]
Indicated in advanced cases of tuberculosis where Induration is threatening of suppuration. Also indicated when fibrosis has taken place. Cough with expectoration of tiny lumps of yellow mucus with tickling sensation and irritation on lying down. Calc. Fluor removes fibroid deposits and restores normal structure.8. Gallicum Acidum [Gallic acid]
Gallic acid should always be remembered as a remedy in tuberculosis. There is pain in lungs with pulmonary hæmorrhage and excessive expectoration. There is much mucus in throat in the morning and dry at night.
 
9. Ammonium Carbonicum [Amm Carb]
Ammonium carb is indicated in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis wherein there is violent cough at night, especially at three or four in morning; with expectoration of bloody mucus; with asthmatic oppression of the chest and sometimes with stitches; as if from particles of dust in the throat; worse by ascending. Often there is much rattling as of large bubbles in the chest; chest feels faint, it is tiresome to breathe; when standing, sensation as if lungs were drawn down; many stitches in the chest, Sternum cracks on bending backward. Much oppression of breathing, worse on physical effort, and much worse still on entering a warm room. Bloody taste followed by cough and spitting bright red blood; with burning in the chest.

10. Kreosotum [Kreosote]

Growing New Brain Cells – and Wiring Them Up

Not too long ago, scientists believed that adults couldn’t grow new neurons in their brain. However, work over the last several years has debunked this myth. We now know that adults continue to grow new neurons throughout life, a process called neurogenesis. Yes, new growth slows down after middle age but it continues. However, there are things you can do to help keep a higher rate of new brain cell birth, which we’ll get into in a minute.

Continuing to grow new brain cells can help in a couple of ways. First, cells are mostly born into a region called the hippocampus, which is crucial for learning and memory. Maintaining neurogenesis helps maintain memory function. Second, keeping those new neurons coming seems to help with depression. The hippocampus is also crucial for stress regulation and neurogenesis is a necessary part of the way anti-depressants work. So, new brain cell birth is important for cognitive and emotional functions. We have referred to these in the past as your IQ and your EQ.

It’s also been known for some time that exercise increase the rate of neurogenesis. Many studies show that lab animals who are allowed to exercise increase the rate of new neurons born into their hippocampus, relative to those animals that don’t get to exercise.

Although these studies are difficult to do in humans (for technical reasons) several studies suggest that the same thing is going on. In human trials that compare groups who exercise to control groups, the exercisers consistently show improved cognitive skills and increased function of specific brain areas, including the hippocampus.

A new study by Wu et al. published in the September 18th, 2008 edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology also shows that exercise may increase the connectivity of new neurons. It’s not enough to make new neurons. You also have to wire them up to other neurons to get them fully integrated into brain circuits so they can do their thing.

On average, every neuron in your brain makes about 10,000 connections. It’s no good if a neuron is just sitting there talking to itself. It must become part of a network to have real value. When you learn things, you actually increase the connectivity between neurons, and that’s what’s most important.

In fact, the number of connections in your brain is probably much more important than the number of brain cells when it comes to retaining cognitive function. The new study by Wu shows that exercise increases both. It increases the number of new neurons being born and the amount of branching that each new neuron forms.

Neurons are shaped kind of like trees. The more branches they have, the more connections they can make. In Wu’s study, exercise increased the number and length of branches on new neurons.

Finally, the most important part of the new study looked at how exercise affects the rate of new brain cell growth and amount of branching as we age. Essentially, the researchers confirmed that the rate of neurogenesis declines as we age and that exercising in early middle age has a large affect on boosting the rate of new brain cell birth. Exercising in older age also increases neurogenesis, although to a lesser degree.

However, here is the interesting part. In their experiments, the sedentary rats had about the same length of neuron branches in middle age and in old age. But the exercising rats had much longer branches. In fact, the old exercisers had longer neuron branches than the younger sedentary rats. This is great news since many studies show that branch length and connectivity may be a better indicator of cognitive health than the number of new neurons born.

We know that life-long learning is one way to promote more neuron branching and connectivity. Now this new study shows that exercising can also do this for older aged adult brains.

The bottom line: physical exercise is a great way to keep your brain fit.

Brain tumors, also known as brain cancer, start within the substance of the brain, spinal cord or nerves. Some tumors which arise from the brain or spine coverings (meninges) are also considered primary brain tumors. Metastatic brain tumors have spread from cancer in other parts of the body, most frequently from the lungs, breast and colon.

Causes

Primary brain tumors arise from many types of brain tissue (for example, glial cells, astrocytes, and other brain cell types). Metastatic brain cancer is caused by the spread of cancer cells from a body organ to the brain. However, the causes for the change from normal cells to cancer cells in both metastatic and primary brain tumors are not fully understood. Data gathered by research scientists show that people with certain risk factors (situations or things associated with people that increase the probability of developing problems) are more likely to develop brain cancer.

Symptoms

Symptoms produced by brain tumors depend on their location, size, rate of growth and stage. Some nonmalignant brain tumors that grow slowly can become quite large before producing symptoms because there often is no swelling of the brain tissues. However, if because of their size or location, they cannot be easily removed, they can be as life threatening as malignant brain tumors.

Treatment for brain tumors depends on a number of factors including the type, location and size of the tumor as well as the patient’s age and general health. Treatment methods and schedules differ for children and adults.

Radiation therapy

Chemotherapy

Chest Pain Causes

Chest pains can therefore signal a life threatening situation and the causes can be anything from heart failure to lung problems. Getting help for a heart attack or lung injury could save your life. There are different types of chest pain, but not all of them are a symptom of heart attack. Indigestion pleurisy sore muscles, injured ribs, pinched nerves, angina and gall bladder or pancreas problems can also cause chest pain. A heart attack can cause chest discomfort, such as a feeling of heaviness, burning, crushing, squeezing; chest pain; or pressure in the middle of the chest area. It is said that each of us at one point of time have experienced pain in chest. Some times, it can be a harsh thorax pain.

Chest pain can seem to be heart pain when it is related to the digestive tract. When acid refluxes (flows back) into the esophagus, it can cause a burning sensation in the chest. This chest pain can be mistaken for heart pain – the reason it was named as it was, even though it has nothing to do with the heart. This is a distressing condition because of the immediate suspicion in the mind of the sufferer that they are, or are about to suffer a myocardial infarction (heart attack). As chest pain whether or not a sharp pain is often feared as a heat attack. However, there still remain many other possible causes for chest pains. When some causes are serious and life threatening there are mildly inconvenient causes as well.

Fatty deposits can build up in the arteries that carry blood to the heart. This can reduce their width, and this in turn can cause a restriction of the blood flow to the heart, which is usually more noticeable after physical activity or exertion. Chest pain can be caused by heart attack, probably the most life-threatening condition. Other heart conditions can also cause chest pain, and should receive medical attention. A blood clot can lodge in a lung artery, blocking blood flow to the tissue of the lungs. This condition, a pulmonary embolism, is similar to pleurisy in that the localized chest pain is made worse by a cough or deep breath. Other lung conditions can also cause chest pain. These may include, sweating, dizziness and vomiting. Other symptoms may be pain in you jaw or left arm. You also may experience shortness of breath.

Muscle contractions in the chest wall are likely the cause of chest hurt from panic attacks. In severe cases, the strain can cause swelling around the injured area. When you hear or feel a cracking sound when you press your fingers in your chest, this means that the muscles and tendons are torn.  Using x-ray can help better identify the chest strain .

Chest massage and hot or cold compress can be used to treat strain.However, medical attention is more advisable especially in a severe chest muscle strain.
