Peritonsillar Abscess Information

A peritonsillar abscess also called quinsy sore throat. Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a common infection of the head and neck region. Peritonsillar abscess is a collection of infected material in the area around the tonsils. Neck pain associated with tender, swollen lymph nodes, referred ear pain and breath odour are also common. Physical signs include redness and edema in the tonsillar area of the affected side and swelling of the jugulodigastric lymph nodes. Symptoms start appearing 2-8 days before the formation of abscess. Peritonsillar abscess is most common in persons 20 to 40 years of age. Young children are seldom affected unless they are immunocompromised, but the infection can cause significant airway obstruction in children. Peritonsillar abscess is a complication of tonsillitis.

It is most often caused by a type of bacteria called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Antipyretics should be administered for elevated temperature, and adequate analgesia should be provided for pain. Antibiotics are also given to treat the infection. Antibiotics for sore throats may well reduce the risk of peritonsillar abscess but sore throats are so common and quinsy so rare that the number needed to treat (NNT) would be enormous. Penicillin used to be the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess. Prompt and complete treatment of tonsillitis, especially bacterial tonsillitis, may help prevent formation of abscess. Needle aspiration or surgical drainage are used as described above. Often a single aspiration does not have to be repeated.

Peritonsillar Abscess Treatment Tips

1. Antibiotics are also given to treat the infection.

2. Use of high dose steroid prior to antibiotic therapy is more effective.

3. Penicillin used to be the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of peritonsillar abscess.

Hypercalcemia Treatment Information

Hypercalcemia is the most common life-threatening metabolic disorder. Hypercalcemia is an excessive amount of calcium in the blood. Hypercalcemia can be life threatening and is the most common metabolic disorder associated with cancer, occurring in 10% to 20% of people with cancer. The main cause of hypercalcemia is overactivity in one or more of the four glands that regulate calcium in your body (parathyroid glands). Women older than 50 are most likely to develop hypercalcemia caused by overactive parathyroid glands. Other causes of hypercalcemia include cancer, certain other medical disorders.

Some medications and excessive use of calcium and vitamin D supplements. Hypercalcemia per se can result in fatigue, depression, confusion, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, pancreatitis or increased urination. In more severe cases, kidney failure and coma can be observed. Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) may also occur. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D regulate calcium balance in the body. PTH is produced by the parathyroid glands — four small glands located in the neck behind the thyroid gland. Vitamin D is obtained from exposure of skin to sunlight.

Successful management of hypercalcemia requires management of the underlying disease. Hormonal therapy (estrogens, antiestrogens, androgens, and progestins) may precipitate hypercalcemia. Thiazide diuretics extend renal calcium reabsorption and may precipitate or exacerbate hypercalcemia. Glucocorticoids increase urinary calcium excretion and decrease intestinal calcium absorption. Glucocorticoids to help counter the effects of too much vitamin D in your blood caused by hypercalcemia. Loop diuretic medications (such as furosemide) to help flush excess calcium from your system and keep your kidneys functioning.

Hypercalcemia Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Calcium and vitamin D supplements can be avoided this condition.

2. Dialysis usually used in severe hypercalcemia complicated by renal failure.

3. Supplemental phosphate should be monitored and added if necessary

4. Calcitonin blocks bone resorption and also increases urinary calcium excretion.

5. Loop diuretic medications to help flush excess calcium from your system.

6. Glucocorticoids (corticosteroids), to help counter the effects of too much vitamin D in your blood.

Symptoms of diabetes in children

Diabetes Type 1 is the most common form of diabetes, found in almost 80% of children under the age of 16. Generally, it is caused to malfunctioned pancreas. In the case of type 1 diabetes- pancreas are unable to generate insulin. This type of diabetes is categorized in autoimmune disease. This is a condition wherein the body’s immune system attacks one’s own cells and tissues of the organ. The insulin generating cells of pancreas are destroyed in diabetes type-1.

Usually, childhood diabetes is not that common, but in recent years the rate of children affected with diabetes has increased all over the world. Every year hundreds of kids are found affected with diabetes type 1. The increased ratio of obesity in American society has welcomed diabetes in children. Obesity is the rising concern of many nutritionists. Children are highly fascinated with junk food, which contain ample amount of fats in the body. Obesity causes several life-threatening disorders such as, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, blood pressure, and strokes.

Numerous factors are responsible for developing the symptoms of diabetes in children. The main causes of diabetes in children are still not cleared. But the most possible reason for provoking the symptoms of diabetes is mutation of genes and various environmental factors. According to health survey, most of the children suffering from type1 diabetes do not have family background of diabetes. The classic symptoms of diabetes are very much similar to diabetes symptoms in children such as:
       Excessive thirst
       Extreme tiredness and weakness
       Sudden loss of weight
       Frequent urination
       Sudden increase in appetite
       Irritation
       Sudden weight gain
Some children even face symptoms such as severe headaches, cramps/ pain in stomach, and disturbed behavioral patterns. Sometimes diabetic acidosis appears prior diagnosing diabetes. Even though it very rarely occurs, it is better to have spread awareness among parents. The awareness associated with diabetes should be initiated by high schools. Consult your doctors if your child is found with even slightest abnormalities. Children are unable to communicate about the modification occurring in their body. Thus, parents should have a proper eye on their health.

Diabetes is incurable, but can be controlled and managed. If a child is diagnosed with diabetes, it is essential to start the treatment as sooner as possible, so that you can avoid further complication with your child. Generally, kids are least bothered about their health. Hence, parents have to make them understand about the importance of good health. Provide them information associated with junk food. Introduce them to healthy and nutritional food. Consult an expert dietician to design a proper diet chart for your child. Strictly implement this diet chart in their daily schedule. It is very much essential to provide your child with balanced diet that includes:

       Diet rich is carbohydrates and fiber
       Cut down the intake of sugar and white flour
       Include plenty of fresh green leafy veggies and fruits
       Make them drink ample of water throughout the day
       Introduce them to light exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, and yoga.

Follow some simple measure to keep your child away from severe complications.

Obesity: Both Nature and Nurture

There has been growing recognition of the scope and threat of obesity. In the United States, one in four adults and one in five children are obese. And obesity has been steadily increasing. The health threats – heart disease, diabetes and cancer – are similar to those of smoking, and they tend to concentrate among the poor. These threats, too, are trending upward: one in three Americans born in 2000 is likely to develop diabetes. Direct and indirect costs of diabetes to the U.S. economy already were $132 billion in 2002. This problem has been building over time. Over the last 30 years American women have increased their daily caloric intake by 21 percent, or 325 calories, while men have added 170 calories to an already significant 2,450 calorie-base. Public awareness, however, has really wakened only in the last few years, with U.S. media coverage of obesity tripling since 2001. It is not surprising, therefore, that a sudden discovery of a steadily growing problem has generated false dichotomies and visible villains. The overriding false dichotomy is nature versus nurture. Are American society’s obese tendencies rooted in our physical or psychic make up, or are they based on changing eating habits and foodstuffs? The clear answer is: “both.” We are eating more but exercising less. There also is mounting evidence of genetic drivers toward obesity. Similarly, we are taking more meals out of the home – and not just at “fast food” restaurants. And we’re eating more processed foods, in larger portions. None of this finger pointing is likely to help us as a society get out of this situation. Fewer jobs require physical labor, so we must find more ways to burn up calories, whether in the gym or just climbing more stairs. Labeling foods as inherently good or bad ignores taste and common sense; all foods in moderation can be fitted into a slender figure. Nor does blaming portion sizes make sense; it ignores the thought processes that see bigger as the better bargain. No single solution exists, nor should any single culprit be seized upon. We need to see obesity in all of its complexity, if we are to sort out solutions that work for all of us.Food manufacturers and service industries need to be – and, I believe, are becoming – part of the solution. They are recognizing that their products contribute to the problem. So, there are things they can do to help. But, we are facing some real challenges in terms of consumer preferences. As this survey shows, consumers are most interested in foods that provide more convenience. That ranks well ahead of changing diets in pursuit of better nutrition. And before either of these comes preserving good taste for the things we voluntarily put in our mouths. An important tool in addressing the complexity of obesity is technology. Biotechnology and new processing methods are helping food companies capture useful ingredients and putting them in new places. Nanotechnology may help us engineer flavors and bioactive ingredients that will be satisfying to consumers and better for them. Cereals can be a great source of fiber and other healthful ingredients like:

• Polyphenols (phenolic acids, flavonoids, isoflavones, etc.)

• Saponins

• Lignans

• Tocopherols and other antioxidants

• EFAs

• Phytosterols

Soybeans are a great source of these ingredients and protein. These nutrition-enhancing ingredients can be extracted from grains and soybeans. They can be put into familiar products like breads, juices and the like in order to promote heart health, digestibility, bone strength, joint comfort and a feeling of satiety. Technology, however, is not a cure-all. First, there are problems in finding the right regulatory environment for new technologies and products. There are issues around rights of invention and proprietary ownership. And there are added costs in building many of these attributes into foods. Food also touches other sensitive chords. New products can be safe without being accepted by consumers. New processes can be proven to work without being trusted by consumers. And, weight gain is a gradual process; dealing with it – or its effects – can always be put off to another day. Between just letting obesity spread and nutrigenomic-designed diets will lie a host of incremental strategies. Food manufacturers will develop novel ingredients and ingredient combinations to deliver more nutrition tastefully. Even conventional agricultural products will be engineered or bred to offer health and appeal. And, growing awareness will lead to better choices for wellness – whether it is new foods, new self-discipline, new activity We will need choices to cover the differences between men and women, children and adults, young and old. Choice also helps make healthfulness a complement to taste, not an alternative. And we will need to take responsibility for our own behaviors. Technology and food service innovations can support good behavior, but success still starts with giving consumers what they want.

Lyme Disease Rash: Reddish Bulls Eye

It is tick transferred disease i.e. some ticks found on deer harbor the bacterium in their stomachs. Lyme disease is spread, when these ticks bite the skin, which permits the bacterium to infect the body. Lyme disease is not contagious, that is it doesn’t transfer from an affected person to someone else. Lyme disease can be fatal as it can cause abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system.

Basically it so happens, in most of the cases that has been diagnosed that ticks tend to live in long grass and shrubs, and when the person comes in contact with such vegetation, ticks attach themselves to the hosts. And then they bite human flesh for blood and thus infecting the individual and spreading the bacterium and giving Lyme disease and after that the Lyme disease rash can develop. Approximately 80 to 85 percent of people, affected with Lyme disease also get the skin rash.

The Lyme disease rash: known as Erythema Migrans

Erythema migrans is a rash, characteristic symptom of the early stage of Lyme disease.  Lyme Disease Rash develops in response to infection by Borrelia spirochetes after a tick bite. This symptom is declared as the primary symptom required by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) surveillance criteria to diagnose and report a case of Lyme disease.

Appearance of the Lyme disease Rash

The Lyme disease rash usually develops about 7 to 14 days after the tick bite, although it may begin as early as 3 days or as late as 32 days later. The most common presentation of Lyme disease rash is as a round or oval rash, which is initially small but becomes larger over several days. The Lyme disease rash initially develops an inner clear area which is surrounding a reddish center: the bull’s-eye rash. Lyme disease rash/ Erythema Migrans pattern or the Bulls-eye pattern rash is like:

  • looks like a target or bull’s eye, which has a central red spot, then an area of clear skin, and a red border

The Lyme disease rashes usual characteristics are:

  • Typically, the rash is between two inches (5 cm) and five inches (25 cm) in diameter.
  • may be as small as a quarter or cover the greater part of a leg or the torso
  • Rashes may vary in size and the infected person may even have multiple rashes.
  • being itchy, warm, and sometimes painful
  • gradually expanding to a size of 7 to 14 inches
  • lingering for about 2 weeks

Though about half the patients, however, the rash is either absent or even presents a different appearance like:

  • The entire rash is fiery red with a raised or eroded center.
  • Bruise like rash where many people have a dark blue and red rash which resembles a recent bruise.

According to the Canadian Lyme Disease Association (CanLyme), they give the prognosis of Lyme disease rash of being approximately 10% of rashes which are atypical forms which is not like Bulls-eyes rash. Thus when a patient with an atypical rash, complains of even removing a tick one to four weeks earlier, some doctors may not associate the rash with the tick bite and they will rule out Lyme disease because the rash does not fit the Lyme disease Erythema Migrans pattern.

Home Remedies for Psoriasis, Causes – Psoriasis Information

Psoriasis is one of the most chronic skin diseases that is recognized by thick, red, silvery, scaled patches on the skin. It can be defined as an inflammatory skin condition. It affects both sexes and usually appears in the age of 15-35 years.

Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, but is most commonly found in the following areas: scalp, elbows, knees, hands, and feet. Psoriasis causes the skin to become red and itchy, and often the skin is covered with scales or plaques

Skin injuries, strep infection, and heavy alcohol use may be causes. Stress may also be a culprit, though some experts say it isn’t. Often, the ailment itself brings on feelings of low esteem and depression- so dealing with the accompanying emotions is a vital part of the treatment

Bitter gourd is considered valuable in treating psoriasis. In 1-cup fresh bitter gourd juice, add a tsp of limejuice. Drink it sip by sip on an empty stomach everyday for about 4-6 months.

Cabbage leaves have been successfully used in the form of compresses in the treatment of psoriasis. They should be thoroughly washed in warm water and dried with a towel. The leaves should be flattened, softened and smoothed out by rolling them with a rolling pin after removing the thick veins. They should be warmed and then applied smoothly to the affected part in an overlapping manner. A pad of soft woolen cloth should be put over them. Then secure it with an elastic bandage.

Mix 2 drops of calendula oil and a drop of oregano oil in a small cup of olive oil and apply. This solution may also be used on the scalp. Massage well into the scalp and remove with a mild shampoo followed by a cider vinegar or lemon rinse. Calendula oil is derived from marigolds and is often used to soothe skin inflammation, and oregano oil has strong antibacterial properties. If you have marigolds growing in your garden, boil four marigold heads in four cups of water for two minutes. Allow to cool and make a compress to apply the solution to the area or use as a scalp rinse.

Treat psoriasis using aloe vera – Aloe vera works really well on all types of skin conditions. It also works wonders when you rub the flesh of the aloe vera into the red area of your psoriasis. Aloe vera is affective in treating the pain and itching. If you do not have aloe vera in your garden your local health food store will have it in the form of a gel, spray, lotion, liquid, cream and even capsules.

Effective home remedy for psoriasis using Marigold lotion for an irritated scalp : Boil 4 marigold heads in 4 cups of water for two minutes. Allow to cool then massage this lotion well into the scalp. Wash with a very mild shampoo or a solution of soapwort. Add lemon juice or cider vinegar to the rinsing water to ensure a thorough rinse. This will give relief from psoriasis.

Bad-looking & Difficult bulky Toenails – Trinity.services003

Fat toenails can be both  ugly and  uncomfortable. Though they are customarily created by a fungus, bulky toenails can also be created by other factors such as an injury to the foot. Many people feel disturbed when their toenails grow thick and they will not put on sandals or go barefoot around.  Fat toenails are more common in old people than in young people.
If the  bulky toenail is  created by a fungus, there will  presumably be other  syndromes as well. A toenail that is discolored from a fungus infection will turn yellowish or brown and  can  begin to  separate from the nail bed. The fungus growing in the nail bed goes on to escalate and creates bulky toenails to  develop. If left untreated the fungus infection that creates fatty toenails can escalate perennial damage to the nail, leaving it ragged and distorted. The fungus can spread to the skin around the nails and escalate parenchyma, which is a surface infection of the skin around the nails.
Nail fungus infections  attribute to about half of all nail disorders. They can not be that easy to  cure and repeated infections are  common. The infections are  categorically  obvious in nails that have been  regularly open to  wettish,  close environments such as sweaty shoes or shower floors. Some people  commit the  error of  attempting to cover up  fatty toenails with nail polish. This just  locks the  dampness  on the nail bed and  creates the infection to worsen.
The two most common categories of nail infections are dermatophytes and yeast.
Dermatophytes are the most common infection that taints toenails and yeast seems to be the notable culprit in fingernail fungus case. It is essential to know the sort of infection so that appropriate treatment can be given.
Regardless of what is creating the bulky toenails, the occurence can be reduced somewhat by cautious filing and cutting. A nail file or emery board can be employed towards the top surface of the nail to  reduce some of the nail material. This will make the bulky toenail feel  good and look  good and will make the fungus itself easier to  cure. Be  indeed  certain that you  sanitize all pedicure supplies with alcohol  prior to using them. If you have professional pedicures  carried out you should  carry your own supplies so you will  ensure that they are  “pure”.

Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal Allergies

May month is considered as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Many of you whose allergies cause you to dread the end of winter, that’s probably no surprise. This spring has already been labeled as one of the worst allergy seasons in decades, with many experts predicting it to be the worst ever. What’s going on? Some scientists are blaming this especially virulent allergy season on global warming. Plants need warmth and carbon dioxide to grow, both of which are becoming more and more abundant with each passing year. In addition, spring came late this year. In parts of the country, the weather went from snowy to balmy in the span of two weeks. So if you suffer from hay fever, be prepared. We come up with a few excellent tips on how to fight off seasonal allergies so you can get outside and enjoy the spring sunshine.

Runny nose and constant sneezing

Flush out excess mucus from your nose and sinuses. For mild symptoms, simply steaming your face, drinking hot peppermint or chamomile tea, or taking a long, hot shower can help. For more tenacious sinus trouble. Second-generation antihistamines, such as loratadine and cetirizine, both of which are non-sedating and long-lasting. Visit your local pharmacy to learn more.

Cough,  More Cough

Don’t ignore; it could be more serious that allergies. Home remedies, like hot tea and cough drops, can help mild coughs and sore throats.

If you’re coughing nonstop and wheezing like you just ran a marathon (even though you’re sitting at your desk), it’s possible that you’re having mild asthma attacks. It’s so important, in fact, that the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology offers free asthma screenings nationwide during the month of May. So if you’re experiencing really bad lung-related symptoms,

Itchy, Red Eyes and a Scratchy Throat

Avoid pollen as best you can.  Try staying indoors when pollen is the highest. Between 6 and 9 a.m. and at dusk. Also, keep the windows to your house and car closed at all times to keep the pollen outside. When you do go outside, make sure to wear sunglasses or other protective eyewear that keeps the pollen from getting in your eyes If you’re doing your best to avoid pollen but still have itchy red eyes, head to the pharmacy for some over-the-counter eye drops. To avoid this rebound effect, steer clear of any eye drops that include a decongestant, and go for a brand whose active ingredient is ketotifen.

Trouble In Sleeping

Target and treat the symptom that’s keeping you awake. For most people, the culprit is usually nasal congestion. To treat allergy-related nasal congestion, pseudoephedrine or an antihistamine that includes a decongestant. And, of course, make sure your bedroom is relaxing, and do everything you can to unwind before bedtime.

Constant lack of energy, stuffy head, clogged ears

Fight back; get more help. For some people, allergy symptoms dominate their daily lives. If over-the-counter and home remedies aren’t working, go visit your healthcare provider ASAP. Sure, nobody dies of seasonal allergies, Untreated allergies can lead to sleep apnea, chronic sinus problems, recurrent ear problems (especially in children), loss of sleep, and asthma. Your doctor can prescribe stronger medication or recommend immunotherapy. Usually a last resort, immunotherapy involves getting weekly shots that immunize you from what you’re allergic to. It can be highly effective for people suffering debilitating seasonal allergy symptoms.

The good news is that while this year’s allergy season may be severe, that same intensity and high concentration of pollen all at once means that the season will probably be shorter than usual. After all, trees and flowers can’t pollinate forever. To get more information about Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, including awareness events near you.

Pinworms – Causes and Symptoms of Pinworms

Pinworm is the most common worm infection in the United States. School-age children, followed by preschoolers, have the highest rates of infection. In some groups nearly 50% of children are infected. Infection often occurs in more than one family member. Adults are less likely to have pinworm infection, except mothers of infected children. Child care centers, and other institutional settings often have cases of pinworm infection.

The pinworm lives in the lower part of the small intestine and the upper part of the colon. It is found worldwide, and causes the most common infection enterobiasis in humans. Unlike many other intestinal parasites, the pinworm does not usually enter the bloodstream or any other organs besides the intestines. Only in rare cases disoriented pinworms are found in the vagina, and even more rarely in the uterus, fallopian tubes, liver, and peritoneum, but the worms cannot survive long in these places.

The itching from the pinworms might wake you up in the middle of the night and make you squirm a lot. So if you’re itchy and sore on your backside, tell your mom or dad. And if you see worms in your underwear or in the toilet, you should tell a parent right away. You should know, though, that some people with pinworms don’t have any symptoms at all.

Causes of Pinworms

Pinworms are the most common worm infection in the United States, primarily affecting school-age children. Pinworm eggs are spread directly from person to person or by touching bedding, food, or other items contaminated with the eggs.

Typically, children are infected by unknowingly touching pinworm eggs and putting their fingers in their mouths. The eggs are swallowed, and eventually hatch in the small intestine. The worms mature in the colon. Female worms then move to the child’s anal area, especially at night, and deposit more eggs. This may cause intense itching and the area may even become infected.

When a person scratches the itchy area, the microscopic eggs cling to fingers and are then transferred to other surfaces, such as food, liquids or other people. Pinworm eggs can survive for two to three weeks on these surfaces. A new infection starts when the eggs reach another person’s mouth from these contaminated surfaces. You can also reinfect yourself by unknowingly swallowing the eggs again.

Infection can also be spread when a person inhales airborne eggs, but this is rare. On rare occasions, pinworm infection persists because eggs hatch outside the anus and the young worms crawl back inside the body.

Symptoms of Pinworms

The symptoms of pinworm infection are caused by the female pinworm laying her eggs. Indeed, most infected individuals have few or no symptoms but, if the infection is heavy, the symptoms can be correspondingly more severe

Symptoms include anal or vaginal itching and irritation, as well as possible irritability, fatigue, weight loss, behavior problems and night-waking/nightmares.

The most common symptom of pinworms is itching around the anus. It is worse at night when the female worm deposits her eggs on the person infected. This can lead to difficulty getting a good night’s sleep.

In girls, pinworm infection can cause vaginal itching and irritation (vaginitis). In severe cases, weight loss, restlessness, irritability, and loss of appetite may occur. In a few rare cases, attacks of appendicitis may have been caused by pinworms blocking the appendix.

The itching is usually worse at night and is caused by worms migrating to the area around the rectum to lay their eggs. When a child scratches the itchy area, the result can be eczema or a bacterial infection around the rectum. In girls, pinworm infection can spread to the vagina and cause a vaginal discharge.

Mild pinworm infections — with only a small number of adult worms in your body — may cause no symptoms. Symptoms occur with moderate or heavy infections.

Depression – Understanding the Causes & Cures

Depression is a type of mental disorder that affects a person’s mood. It can affect your thoughts, feelings, behavior, and overall health. Approximately one out of fifteen teenagers gets depressed every year!! In America alone, 1 in 4 Americans at some time in their lives suffer from depression. Recent studies have highlighted the physiological or biochemical imbalances in the body as the two main causes of depression. These studies have also pointed at the foods we eat having an influential effect on mental health.

Are you suffering from depression?

Every human feels sad at some time but if this sadness is prolonged and you feel sad more than you feel okay then you should be concerned about your mental health. Is your sadness due to depression? Or is it a normal feeling? To answer this, the American Psychiatric Association has given certain guidelines. They say that you are clinically depressed if you experience 5 of the following 8 symptoms for a month or longer. If you experience 4 out of 8, you are probably depressed. Are you experiencing?

  1. Poor appetite with weight loss or increased appetite with weight gain?
  2. Insomnia or hypersomnia?
  3. Physical hyperactivity or inactivity?
  4. Loss of interest in usual activities or a decreased sex drive?
  5. Loss of energy and feelings of fatigue?
  6. Feelings of worthlessness, self-reproach or inappropriate guilt?
  7. Diminished ability to think or concentrate?
  8. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide?

Dietary Considerations

As mentioned above, recent studies have shown great significance of the food we take on our mental health. Our diets can cause or aggravate depression in many ways. Sugar is the main culprit. The brain requires stable blood sugar levels. When we eat sugary foods, our pancreas becomes over-stimulated and produces excess insulin that pushes our blood sugar too low. In short, sugar disturbs the delicate balance of brain chemistry. Strangely, the symptoms of depression are temporarily calmed by sugar. However, in the long run it harms us as it causes a crash in energy and depression in the wake of a sugary snack.

Besides sugar, fried foods also have an adverse effect on our mental capability. It greatly slows down the synthesis of neurotransmitters in the brain by making blood cells sticky. In order to avoid such adverse effects of fried and fatty foods you need to reduce your consumption of whole milk, cheese, fried foods, and hamburgers.

An overgrowth of candida (yeast) also contributes to depression. Food allergies can be one of the most common causes of metabolically induced depression. High levels of histamine in the blood can cause depression and mood swings. Cerebral allergy is caused by foods we are sensitive or allergic to. Symptoms of cerebral allergy include depression, fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, irritability, confusion, headaches, and dullness.

Oral contraceptives deplete the body of nutrients that prevent depression, such as vitamin B12, folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and zinc. Drinking too much coffee, tea and sodas with caffeine can bring on many of the symptoms associated with depression (headaches, nervousness, and irritability). Low levels of Vitamin C can cause depression.

Dietary balance of complex carbohydrates and proteins has an effect on the production of neurotransmitters.

  • Tryptophan, a serotonin precursor, is increased when we eat complex carbohydrates like beans, brown rice and vegetables. If you’re feeling agitated, eating a meal like that will help calm you down. When our brains produce enough serotonin we feel relaxed.
  • Protein promotes the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, which make us feel more alert.
  • Rule of thumb: Eat more complex carbohydrates if you are nervous and need to relax, eat more proteins if you are tired and need to be more alert.

Treatment of Depression with Alkaline Ionized Water

Water is resource which has solutions to all kinds of problems. To avoid all such depression related problems you need to take lots of water as water has shown its magic from the very beginning of life on earth. The quality of water varies greatly; it becomes difficult to get pure water free from any pollutants. All tap or bottled mineral water is not 100% pure or highly hydrating. Alkaline Ionized water is negatively charged, is a powerful natural antioxidant, and is up to 6 times more hydrating than normal bottled or distilled water. It will clear up the mind, energize the body and reduce the risk to depression by a great extent. Alkaline water is what you need to protect yourself from risks of depression.

Supplementation

Vitamin supplementation can have an influence on depression, especially if someone is deficient in them.

Anxiety Attacks and Phobias Caused By Malfunction in The Inner Ear – Auditory and Coordination Related Phobias!

AUDITORY PHOBIAS

All auditory sound information is filtered, sequenced and fine tuned by the inner-ear system. If this system is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to certain loud or piercing noises, such as: a clap of thunder, a fire alarm, a police siren, screeching brakes, a ringing telephone, a tire blowout. If any of these sounds provoke severe or uncontrollable anxiety, phobias may develop.

Notice how this mechanism is highlighted in Evan’s description of his auditory phobias:

“There are certain sounds that I have always been very sensitive to and therefore avoid: high-pitched or shrill female voices on the radio, running water, dishes banging together, dogs barking, and normally pitched voices in small, confined areas. The sound of speeding trucks on the turnpike drives me crazy. And music, even classical music, must be kept at a low volume. If not, I feel jangled and upset.”

When auditory information is not being properly processed you may be hypersensitive to all loud noise or even to garbled noise, such as the noise of a crowd. Thus, for example, Robert has panic attacks that are triggered by various noisy environments. He explains:

“I can´t go to a restaurant unless I know it´s a really quiet place. If I´m stuck in a noisy restaurant I start to sweat. I just want to jump up and scream, ‘Shut up…  please…  before I go crazy!’ Obviously I don´t. I just run out of the room. I know this isn´t normal, but I can´t help it. The noise just freaks me out.”

Loud or garbled noise makes some phobics dizzy or disoriented. This indicates that several faulty inner-ear mechanisms i.e. auditory, balance, and compass can jointly contribute to the development of phobic behavior.

COORDINATION – RELATED PHOBIAS

The inner ear acts like a guided-missile system, coordinating and fine tuning your movements, voluntary and involuntary, and thoughts. When this system is impaired, coordination problems may trigger anxiety especially when these problems subject you to embarrassment, frustration, or danger. If this anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, phobic behavior may develop.

Coordination-Related Phobias: An Example

Sylvia has a coordination-related fear of driving:

“I´m embarrassed to admit it, but I can´t drive. I panic at the wheel. I can´t steer the car. I can´t keep it on a straight line. This is terrifying. I could never understand why it was so easy for most people. It´s hard to believe that only you can´t drive. Even now, as I think about this, I could cry.”

Stairs, Escalators, and Elevators:

The fear of escalators, stairs, and elevators frequently stems from coordination problems. Here is how Susan described her fear of escalators and elevators:

“I would go up the escalator, but never down. I was terrified of falling. Actually, I feared that my foot might become caught on the step. I couldn´t figure out which foot to step on with first. I was afraid of riding in an elevator unless someone was with me. I was afraid the door would crush me. It just didn´t seem that there was enough time to get safely inside before the door closed.”

ANTICIPATING THE WORST

When a phobic trigger provokes anxiety, fear, or panic, that response is imprinted in the memory banks of your brain. Once this happens, your brain has actually learned to panic in the same way it once learned to tie a shoelace or ride a bicycle.

As a result, the majority of phobics don´t have to look down from the top of a twenty-story building to know they are afraid of heights… they don´t have to hear thunder to know they´re afraid of loud noises… they don t have to stand alone in an empty parking lot to know they´re afraid of wide-open spaces… they don´t have to get stuck in an elevator to know they´re afraid of small, enclosed spaces…  they feel it in their very souls. In fact, the mere anticipation of such a confrontation is often enough to trigger anxiety, fear, or total panic.

The vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog I have further discussed these problems.

Anxiety In A Long Distance Relationship

Being apart in a long distance relationship will often result in a lot of worriesome stress and anxiety that not only can be avoided but, if approached the right way, can actually “make the heart grow fonder”.  Here is how you can make anxiety work for you and enhance your relationship.

With the advantage of modern technology that includes video connections on computers and telephones, messaging facilities on cell phones and online shopping and delivery, there are many aids to long distance relationships that a modern couple can enjoy which were simply unheard of in the days of our not so distant ancestors.

Of special concern to many is the possibility that our partner will be exposed to overwhelming temptations, and even cheat, while they are away from us. If this is a minor concern, frequent contact with messaging, telephone calls and video link will be very helpful in helping to sustain and build a loving relationship. When you view the separation with a sense of calm rather than alarm, there are many tools available to help sustain the relationship.

If you are finding the separation to be especially stressful, it is important to understand that the anxiety being experienced has its origins in perception and arises from the way you look at the world. That is, you are responding to thoughts and expectations that your partner may be cheating on you or is simply losing interest.

This does not mean that they are behaving badly or that their feelings are cooling. It indicates that you are allowing negative thoughts to evoke negative feelings. Invariably, decisions and choices that we make when we are feeling anxious, angry, resentful, hurt, sad, lonely, and the like, will point us in a direction that is away from what we really want.

For instance, if we are resentful towards an absent partner, we are tempted to be surly, cool, distant, suspicious and critical. Acting in this way towards another stirs resentment in the one on the receiving end of our ire.

Do they feel more loving when being treated this way? More likely they are inclined to retaliate, in turn causing you to feel more resentful!

Notice that what caused us to feel resentment in the first place were our perceptions of the situation. The thoughts we entertained may have been based on little more than our own insecurities and other attitudes and expectations that we hold which shape our perception of the world.

The ideas we accept mold the way we see events and the way we interpret what we see. If we see a rosy picture, we feel joyous and expect a happy outcome. If our view is a gloomy one, our prospects also appear dark and we feel anxious and threatened.

Anxiety in a long distance relationship is something we CAN control and overcome when we understand the way it works and what can be done about it. The flow on benefit is that it helps us in all sorts of ways and not only when we are apart from our loved ones. We also learn how to create an infinitely better world for ourselves and feel more in control of our lives.

Ingrown Toe Nail – Getting Back the Good Looks

Did you know that the toe nail can develop abnormally into the toe and expose the toe to nail fungus infection? If you did not know then, here is chance for you to be informed. Ingrown toe nail is also called onychocryptosis. This refers to a situation in which the sides of the nail grow towards the inside of the toe. This should not be confused with callus which is caused by pressure on the toe due to shoes or long walks.

So what really causes the ingrown toe nail? There are those who have the suggested that cutting of the nail in a wrong way would make the nail grow in a bad or misdirected way. The sharp edges that have been cut poorly would lead to pressure on the sides of the nail.

The pressure points that are caused by the ingrown toe nail would expose the toe to nail fungus infection. The candidas fungi or the dermatophy type of fungi would grow their roots. These are called hyphae which are simple or rudimentary forms of roots. The prerequisite for the fungal infection is the damp toe or the softened nail plate. This is what you will have to prevent by not allowing the toes to be wet. You can also prevent nail fungus infection by making sure that the nail plate remains strong. Protect it from the weakening of the hard plate by not having corrosive materials such as nail polish remover.

In the case of ingrown toenail, you may need to see a podiatrist to advice on the management of the pressure points. The danger is usually in the development of a septic wound from the point of growth of the ingrown nail. There may be a need to take some anti-biotic and to prevent the formation of pus from the bacterial activity.

Because of the danger of second chance in growth of the ingrown nail, you will need to have treatment that will prevent any further growth. A surgical procedure may be necessary to prevent the recurrence of the nail growing into the toes.

Some of the remedies that have been known to prevent the growth of the nail includes the use of acids. Before you get the stronger acids that may have a negative effect on the toe, make use f natural acids such as vinegar. In a stronger concentration, it is able to prevent further nail growth and also protect the toe nail from nail fungus infection.

Toenail Fungus Cure

Over 30 million people worldwide suffer from some sort of nail or toenail fungus. The statistics are alarming to say the least. Nail and toenail fungus can be as suttle as a yellowing or discoloring of the nail or toenail and as serious as the complete loss of, deformity of one or more nails on the hands, feet or both. Not too mention, if left unattended, the infection can be excruciatingly painful that could result in a visit to a doctor.

Caught early however, those who suffer a mild case of nail or toenail fungus infections can treat the affected condition using a natural topical solution. Those suffering with nail or toenail fungus may not see their condition extend beyond a mild case, in some cases, people have reported having the condition for more than 10yrs without it becoming too serious. Other people have reported that their condition is nothing more than an ugly discoloration of the nail or toenail, more of the nuisance than anything,

No matter how serious your case may be, it is usually accompanied by discoloring of the nail, crusty and bumpy in appearance and a discharge of a smelly odor, especially on the feet. Toenail fungus usually spreads from one nail to another and may be passed on to others, friends, family members etc, so it’s not something that should be ignored.

There are many so called miracle cures and home remedies available and this information is readily available all over the Internet. Don’t be fooled into thinking that any of the home treatments work because most of the time they don’t and you will be very disappointed in the end when you see no results.

Taking the time to educate yourself is one of the best steps you can take in finding a cure. No two cures are alike, what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another but the important thing is to start your treatment early and not later. Nail or toenail fungus is very curable, but it takes allot of time and patience to completely eliminate. Don’t start a treatment then decide not to follow though.. Doing so will spell failure and you will be very disappointed once again thinking that your treatment failed when in fact you did not take the time to apply a topical as directed. There are no overnight cures and you may not even see results in 2 week or even 4. Patience is a virtue in this case.

Should i consult my doctor? The answer to that question is quite obvious. If your having trouble walking, unable to put your shoes on, as is the case with a toenail fungus infection or your condition seems serious, by all means do so. Be aware however that you may be placed on a medication such as Limasil which incidentally has been linked to liver damage and other unknown causes. This alone is enough to scare many people. The adverse affects of fungal mediation is still very unclear and many would much rather deal with their condition without a prescription then to actually start one. Limasil and other prescription treatments can take upwards of 6 months and cost thousands of dollars. Even then, there are no guarantees
and your condition could recur. The other problem being, millions of people have no health insurance. Recently, those statistics show that over 26 million Americans alone have no insurance whatsoever. No insurance means expensive treatments, treatments that many people can’t afford.

So what are the alternatives to prescription drugs? Well, a good topical that contains all naturals herbs, oils and vitamins can usually clear up the affected area but it does take time,  usually 2 to 3 months, and can take even longer. As the fungus dies the new nail begins to appear and we all know how slowly nails grow. As the new nail appears it will look smooth and disease free. Treatment should continue until the entire nail has been replaced with the new nail.

One of the misconceptions about a nail and toenail fungus is that it can’t be spread from one person to another. Actually, that is not the case. It is very easy to get a nail fungus infection and it’s common among those who have sweaty feet, share bathrooms, swimming pools, showers and locker rooms. Also people who do a lot of standing and are on their feet frequently, as in the case of runners, athletes and dancers are prone to infection. Individual who have a history of athlete’s foot, have manicure and pedicure in places where dirty nail files and in use or where unsanitary conditions exists, e.g. salons. These types of places are perfect mediums to harbor fungus spores. Senior citizens, who are about sixty five years old and above and people who have diabetes and other forms of circulatory diseases are also prone to all types of nail fungus.

Toenail fungus cure: What ever treatment you choose, make sure that it includes natural ingredients such as Tree Tea Oils and vitamin E. Other ingredients such as Clove oil and Lemon grass oil add soothing relief. When searching for a treatment, be sure that your product contains two or more of these ingredients on the label.
