A peritonsillar abscess also called quinsy sore throat. Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a common infection of the head and neck region. Peritonsillar abscess is a collection of infected material in the area around the tonsils. Neck pain associated with tender, swollen lymph nodes, referred ear pain and breath odour are also common. Physical signs include redness and edema in the tonsillar area of the affected side and swelling of the jugulodigastric lymph nodes. Symptoms start appearing 2-8 days before the formation of abscess. Antibiotics for sore throats may well reduce the risk of peritonsillar abscess but sore throats are so common and quinsy so rare that the number needed to treat (NNT) would be enormous. The worms mature in the colon. Female worms then move to the child’s anal area, especially at night, and deposit more eggs. This may cause intense itching and the area may even become infected.

When a person scratches the itchy area, the microscopic eggs cling to fingers and are then transferred to other surfaces, such as food, liquids or other people. Pinworm eggs can survive for two to three weeks on these surfaces. A new infection starts when the eggs reach another person’s mouth from these contaminated surfaces. You can also reinfect yourself by unknowingly swallowing the eggs again.

Infection can also be spread when a person inhales airborne eggs, but this is rare. On rare occasions, pinworm infection persists because eggs hatch outside the anus and the young worms crawl back inside the body.

Symptoms of Pinworms

The symptoms of pinworm infection are caused by the female pinworm laying her eggs. Indeed, most infected individuals have few or no symptoms but, if the infection is heavy, the symptoms can be correspondingly more severe

Symptoms include anal or vaginal itching and irritation, as well as possible irritability, fatigue, weight loss, behavior problems and night-waking/nightmares.

The most common symptom of pinworms is itching around the anus. It is worse at night when the female worm deposits her eggs on the person infected. This can lead to difficulty getting a good night’s sleep.

In girls, pinworm infection can cause vaginal itching and irritation (vaginitis). In severe cases, weight loss, restlessness, irritability, and loss of appetite may occur. In a few rare cases, attacks of appendicitis may have been caused by pinworms blocking the appendix.

The itching is usually worse at night and is caused by worms migrating to the area around the rectum to lay their eggs. When a child scratches the itchy area, the result can be eczema or a bacterial infection around the rectum. In girls, pinworm infection can spread to the vagina and cause a vaginal discharge.

Mild pinworm infections — with only a small number of adult worms in your body — may cause no symptoms. Symptoms occur with moderate or heavy infections.

Depression – Understanding the Causes & Cures

Depression is a type of mental disorder that affects a person’s mood. It can affect your thoughts, feelings, behavior, and overall health. Approximately one out of fifteen teenagers gets depressed every year!! In America alone, 1 in 4 Americans at some time in their lives suffer from depression. Recent studies have highlighted the physiological or biochemical imbalances in the body as the two main causes of depression. These studies have also pointed at the foods we eat having an influential effect on mental health.

Are you suffering from depression?

Every human feels sad at some time but if this sadness is prolonged and you feel sad more than you feel okay then you should be concerned about your mental health. Is your sadness due to depression? Or is it a normal feeling? To answer this, the American Psychiatric Association has given certain guidelines. They say that you are clinically depressed if you experience 5 of the following 8 symptoms for a month or longer. If you experience 4 out of 8, you are probably depressed. Are you experiencing?

  2. Insomnia or hypersomnia?

Dietary Considerations

As mentioned above, recent studies have shown great significance of the food we take on our mental health. Our diets can cause or aggravate depression in many ways. Sugar is the main culprit. The brain requires stable blood sugar levels. When we eat sugary foods, our pancreas becomes over-stimulated and produces excess insulin that pushes our blood sugar too low. In short, sugar disturbs the delicate balance of brain chemistry. Strangely, the symptoms of depression are temporarily calmed by sugar. However, in the long run it harms us as it causes a crash in energy and depression in the wake of a sugary snack.

Besides sugar, fried foods also have an adverse effect on our mental capability. It greatly slows down the synthesis of neurotransmitters in the brain by making blood cells sticky. In order to avoid such adverse effects of fried and fatty foods you need to reduce your consumption of whole milk, cheese, fried foods, and hamburgers.

An overgrowth of candida (yeast) also contributes to depression. Food allergies can be one of the most common causes of metabolically induced depression. High levels of histamine in the blood can cause depression and mood swings. Cerebral allergy is caused by foods we are sensitive or allergic to. Symptoms of cerebral allergy include depression, fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, irritability, confusion, headaches, and dullness.

Oral contraceptives deplete the body of nutrients that prevent depression, such as vitamin B12, folic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and zinc. Drinking too much coffee, tea and sodas with caffeine can bring on many of the symptoms associated with depression (headaches, nervousness, and irritability). Low levels of Vitamin C can cause depression.

Dietary balance of complex carbohydrates and proteins has an effect on the production of neurotransmitters.

  • Tryptophan, a serotonin precursor, is increased when we eat complex carbohydrates like beans, brown rice and vegetables. If you’re feeling agitated, eating a meal like that will help calm you down. When our brains produce enough serotonin we feel relaxed.
  • Protein promotes the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, which make us feel more alert.
  • Rule of thumb: Eat more complex carbohydrates if you are nervous and need to relax, eat more proteins if you are tired and need to be more alert.

Anxiety Attacks and Phobias Caused By Malfunction in The Inner Ear – Auditory and Coordination Related Phobias!


All auditory sound information is filtered, sequenced and fine tuned by the inner-ear system. If this system is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to certain loud or piercing noises, such as: a clap of thunder, a fire alarm, a police siren, screeching brakes, a ringing telephone, a tire blowout. If any of these sounds provoke severe or uncontrollable anxiety, phobias may develop.

Notice how this mechanism is highlighted in Evan’s description of his auditory phobias:

“There are certain sounds that I have always been very sensitive to and therefore avoid: high-pitched or shrill female voices on the radio, running water, dishes banging together, dogs barking, and normally pitched voices in small, confined areas. The sound of speeding trucks on the turnpike drives me crazy. And music, even classical music, must be kept at a low volume. If not, I feel jangled and upset.”

When auditory information is not being properly processed you may be hypersensitive to all loud noise or even to garbled noise, such as the noise of a crowd. Thus, for example, Robert has panic attacks that are triggered by various noisy environments. He explains:

“I can´t go to a restaurant unless I know it´s a really quiet place. If I´m stuck in a noisy restaurant I start to sweat. I just want to jump up and scream, ‘Shut up…  please…  before I go crazy!’ Obviously I don´t. I just run out of the room. I know this isn´t normal, but I can´t help it. The noise just freaks me out.”

Loud or garbled noise makes some phobics dizzy or disoriented. This indicates that several faulty inner-ear mechanisms i.e. auditory, balance, and compass can jointly contribute to the development of phobic behavior.


The inner ear acts like a guided-missile system, coordinating and fine tuning your movements, voluntary and involuntary, and thoughts. When this system is impaired, coordination problems may trigger anxiety especially when these problems subject you to embarrassment, frustration, or danger. If this anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, phobic behavior may develop.

Coordination-Related Phobias: An Example

Sylvia has a coordination-related fear of driving:

“I´m embarrassed to admit it, but I can´t drive. I panic at the wheel. I can´t steer the car. I can´t keep it on a straight line. This is terrifying. I could never understand why it was so easy for most people. It´s hard to believe that only you can´t drive. Even now, as I think about this, I could cry.”

Stairs, Escalators, and Elevators:

The fear of escalators, stairs, and elevators frequently stems from coordination problems. Here is how Susan described her fear of escalators and elevators:

“I would go up the escalator, but never down. I was terrified of falling. Actually, I feared that my foot might become caught on the step. I couldn´t figure out which foot to step on with first. I was afraid of riding in an elevator unless someone was with me. I was afraid the door would crush me. It just didn´t seem that there was enough time to get safely inside before the door closed.”


When a phobic trigger provokes anxiety, fear, or panic, that response is imprinted in the memory banks of your brain. Once this happens, your brain has actually learned to panic in the same way it once learned to tie a shoelace or ride a bicycle.

As a result, the majority of phobics don´t have to look down from the top of a twenty-story building to know they are afraid of heights… they don´t have to hear thunder to know they´re afraid of loud noises… they don t have to stand alone in an empty parking lot to know they´re afraid of wide-open spaces… they don´t have to get stuck in an elevator to know they´re afraid of small, enclosed spaces…  they feel it in their very souls. In fact, the mere anticipation of such a confrontation is often enough to trigger anxiety, fear, or total panic.

The vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog I have further discussed these problems.

Anxiety In A Long Distance Relationship

Being apart in a long distance relationship will often result in a lot of worriesome stress and anxiety that not only can be avoided but, if approached the right way, can actually “make the heart grow fonder”.  Here is how you can make anxiety work for you and enhance your relationship.

With the advantage of modern technology that includes video connections on computers and telephones, messaging facilities on cell phones and online shopping and delivery, there are many aids to long distance relationships that a modern couple can enjoy which were simply unheard of in the days of our not so distant ancestors.

Of special concern to many is the possibility that our partner will be exposed to overwhelming temptations, and even cheat, while they are away from us. If this is a minor concern, frequent contact with messaging, telephone calls and video link will be very helpful in helping to sustain and build a loving relationship. When you view the separation with a sense of calm rather than alarm, there are many tools available to help sustain the relationship.

If you are finding the separation to be especially stressful, it is important to understand that the anxiety being experienced has its origins in perception and arises from the way you look at the world. That is, you are responding to thoughts and expectations that your partner may be cheating on you or is simply losing interest.

This does not mean that they are behaving badly or that their feelings are cooling. It indicates that you are allowing negative thoughts to evoke negative feelings. Invariably, decisions and choices that we make when we are feeling anxious, angry, resentful, hurt, sad, lonely, and the like, will point us in a direction that is away from what we really want.

For instance, if we are resentful towards an absent partner, we are tempted to be surly, cool, distant, suspicious and critical. Acting in this way towards another stirs resentment in the one on the receiving end of our ire.

Do they feel more loving when being treated this way? More likely they are inclined to retaliate, in turn causing you to feel more resentful!  

Notice that what caused us to feel resentment in the first place were our perceptions of the situation. The thoughts we entertained may have been based on little more than our own insecurities and other attitudes and expectations that we hold which shape our perception of the world.

The ideas we accept mold the way we see events and the way we interpret what we see. If we see a rosy picture, we feel joyous and expect a happy outcome. If our view is a gloomy one, our prospects also appear dark and we feel anxious and threatened.

Anxiety in a long distance relationship is something we CAN control and overcome when we understand the way it works and what can be done about it. The flow on benefit is that it helps us in all sorts of ways and not only when we are apart from our loved ones. We also learn how to create an infinitely better world for ourselves and feel more in control of our lives.

Ingrown Toe Nail – Getting Back the Good Looks

Did you know that the toe nail can develop abnormally into the toe and expose the toe to nail fungus infection? If you did not know then, here is chance for you to be informed. Ingrown toe nail is also called onychocryptosis. This refers to a situation in which the sides of the nail grow towards the inside of the toe. This should not be confused with callus which is caused by pressure on the toe due to shoes or long walks.

So what really causes the ingrown toe nail? There are those who have the suggested that cutting of the nail in a wrong way would make the nail grow in a bad or misdirected way. The sharp edges that have been cut poorly would lead to pressure on the sides of the nail.

The pressure points that are caused by the ingrown toe nail would expose the toe to nail fungus infection. The candidas fungi or the dermatophy type of fungi would grow their roots. These are called hyphae which are simple or rudimentary forms of roots. The prerequisite for the fungal infection is the damp toe or the softened nail plate. This is what you will have to prevent by not allowing the toes to be wet. You can also prevent nail fungus infection by making sure that the nail plate remains strong. Protect it from the weakening of the hard plate by not having corrosive materials such as nail polish remover.

In the case of ingrown toenail, you may need to see a podiatrist to advice on the management of the pressure points. The danger is usually in the development of a septic wound from the point of growth of the ingrown nail. There may be a need to take some anti-biotic and to prevent the formation of pus from the bacterial activity.

Because of the danger of second chance in growth of the ingrown nail, you will need to have treatment that will prevent any further growth. A surgical procedure may be necessary to prevent the recurrence of the nail growing into the toes.

Some of the remedies that have been known to prevent the growth of the nail includes the use of acids. Before you get the stronger acids that may have a negative effect on the toe, make use f natural acids such as vinegar. In a stronger concentration, it is able to prevent further nail growth and also protect the toe nail from nail fungus infection.
