Sciatica Nerve Pain—Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

backpain-woman-couch.jpgWhat is sciatica nerve pain?

Sciatica nerve pain is caused when sciatic nerve is pinched by a herniated muscle. It starts from the lower back and travels down the buttocks to the leg. Sciatica pain is the same thing as sciatica back pain or sciatica nerve pain.

Causes

Sciatica pain occurs due to the herniation or bulging out of the lumber disc that compresses the root of the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms

In most cases the sciatica nerve pain starts from the posterior thigh and radiates through the knee and goes down to the lower leg and the foot.

Sciatica pain often accompanies the lower back pain and is much worse than it. This pain usually occurs more in case of those who already have a history of the lower back pain.

If sciatica becomes chronic, it tends to get localized on the buttocks and the back of the leg. The patient feels the pain even when he sits, stands, sneezes or has a bowel movement.  He feels comfortable only when he lies down.

Diagnosis

Sometimes the back pain suffered by the people who participate in sports, recreational activities or lift some heavy objects is mistaken for sciatica pain. Sciatica pain is caused by inflammation of the nerve root while back pain is caused by strain on the muscles.

The doctors, therefore, conduct nerve root tension tests to confirm the occurrence of sciatica. This is done by recreating the pain by moving the body or stretching the leg so as to cause a compression of the sciatic nerve. If the patient feels pain during the tests, he is diagnosed to be suffering from sciatica.

 Treatment

Sometimes the patients spontaneously get relief from sciatica pain, but those who do not should first try conservative treatment. You should take rest for a few days and avoid doing strenuous physical activities. You   can take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines alone with physical therapy that involves stretching and strengthening exercises.

Obstinate and severe cases of sciatica pain require attention from the specialists and may have to be treated with surgery.

Are you suffering from sciatica nerve pain? It does not matter that you have suffered from it for 10, 15 or even 30 years. You would be completely cured in just 21 days even if you are a lost case. What Is The Cause Of Scoliosis?

Dr. Davis here from Vista CA…

The Problem

Scoliosis is a disorder that causes an abnormal curve of the spine, or backbone. The spine has normal curves when looking from the side, but it should appear straight when looking from the front. According to reliable sources in about 80% of cases, the cause of scoliosis is not known. 80%! Wow that is a lot! In 8/10 of the people who have been diagnosed with scoliosis or curvature in the spine the medical profession have no clue what causes it.

Generally, the scoliosis is found when a child is examined for scoliosis in middle school. But frequently scoliosis is undetected until adulthood. Regardless, the earlier the curvature can be found the better. If it is identified at 13 years of age and it is already 15 degrees…it would have been much better to find it at 7 years of age when it was 8 degrees don’t you think? Especially if the underlying cause can be corrected and the progression of the scoliosis can be stopped. Also the earlier the scoliosis is identified the more likely the condition can be reversed.

Scoliosis has psychological consequences as well as physical consequences. Self image can be negatively impacted, especially in the formative adolescent years. Scoliosis can be so mild that an untrained eye cannot see the curve, or it can be severe enough to cause deformity. Children are often made fun of as a result of these deformities.

The physical consequences are much worse though. People with scoliosis are a greater risk of developing heart problems, breathing problems, osteoporosis, accelerated disc degeneration and spinal pain, reproductive function and pregnancy problems can be just some of the consequences associated with untreated scoliosis.

The medical approach has 3 main strategies. Wait until it gets worse! Put a brace on the entire trunk for up to 23 hours a day! Or dangerous surgery! Doesn’t sound like fun to me! Which of these approaches gets to the underlying cause?…none of them? The medical approach is focused on the effects and not the cause obviously.

The Upper Neck Connection

Two medical doctors from Europe have done extensive research into upper neck problems in newborns and how that relates to the health of children. Dr. Gutmann was researching the connection all the way back to the 1960’s… in 1987 Dr. Gutmann published his research linking the upper neck to problems ranging from scoliosis to ear infections, torticollis, colic and many other common childhood conditions.

Dr. Biedermann also has published extensively on this subject and published his findings in 1992. Between the 2 medical researchers they have studied over 1000 newborns and have observed a very high incidence of upper cervical misalignments on x-ray. Gutmann found over 80% in his study had problems in the upper neck that needed to be addressed! Birth trauma was the most common cause. Forceps delivery, vacuum extraction and even just normal birthing methods with a woman flat on her back rather than in the standing position where gravity can work, can be an extremely traumatic experience for the head and neck of a newborn.

It is reported that within the general population the incidence of Scoliosis is about 2.5% or about 25 per 1000 people. However, that is only the people who are identified as having scoliosis and it only includes those that have a 10 degree curvature or more. A 7,8, or 9 degree scoliosis can still have dramatic affects on the health of a person’s spine and body. Also many individuals have no idea that they have a curvature in their spine until adulthood. I have seen patients in my office who are in their 60’s who were unaware of a 10-15 degree scoliosis!

If the weight of the head is not balanced over the spinal column due to accidents and injuries to the upper neck this will result in postural changes including head tilt, shoulder tilt, hips uneven, and leg imbalance. The earlier the child develops this upper neck misalignment the more likely it is for them to develop a scoliosis when they hit their growth spurt.

The Solution

Early detection is the key to stopping the progression and possibly correct the scoliosis completely. All children should be evaluated after birth and regularly throughout the childhood years for the presence of an upper neck misalignment that could start this process in their spine. If a curvature is detected than the misalignment should be corrected as soon as possible. If the scoliosis is already very advanced due to lack of evaluation, than the misalignment should still be corrected and maintained and postural exercises should be given in order to prevent future progression. The longer the curvature has been there the more likely it will be to not correct completely.

If you have ever looked at young girl with Scoliosis. You will notice the position of her head…tilted over to the side…then the curve begins to compensate from there….first one way and then the other until the pelvis is seen as being lower on one side in the standing position. This is a very common pattern that develops after an upper neck misalignment at an early age that begins a cascade of events. When the top bone of the neck…the atlas is misaligned it will tilt the head off to the side…and just like standing on the side of a hill your body must compensate for the change in head position. If the misalignment occurs early enough in life than a idiopathic scoliosis will develop. Idiopathic means that the medical profession does not know what causes it. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis…approximately 80-85 % of all scoliosis is idiopathic. I prefer to call this an Atlas Misalignment Scoliosis.

Proprioceptive Problems

Disturbances of postural equilibrium (or what is called proprioception) have been found in idiopathic scoliosis, and several researchers have suggested that this is a result of brain stem disturbances. It has been shown experimentally that stress on posterior nerve roots can also cause spinal deviation.

Following a head or neck trauma one area that is commonly damaged is the proprioceptive system of the neck. Proprioception is your body’s ability to perceive your position is space. The upper cervical spine has the most dense collection of proprioceptors in the body. When these proprioceptors are damaged people tend to have an all sorts of different problems. An Upper Cervical Corrective Procedure is designed to correct this underlying cause in order to restore proper neurology and physiology to the body. This underlying proprioceptive imbalance could be another reason why Upper Cervical Care is so effective in helping those with Scoliosis.

Do you have Scoliosis? Do you know if you have Scoliosis? Does your child have Scoliosis? Don’t wait to middle school to find out…the earlier the misalignment is detected the more likely that you can have a complete correction.

Sore Throat is the First Sign of Cold & Flu Season

During the months of September through February when the temperatures are particularly cold in most parts of the world, colds and the flu run rampant. Although you can catch a cold or flu at any time throughout the year, it is more prevalent when the temperature seems to dip. Unfortunately, there has been no discovery on why this phenomenon is but scientists have some theories. Researches postulate that during the colder seasons people stay indoors more often which allows for closer contact between people, which increases the likelihood of transmission of the cold or flu. Additionally, colder air also means drier air. When the air is dry the mucus membranes in the body also dry, which is the primary means of how the body eliminates virus particles. Also virus and bacteria can harden and live within the respiratory tract much like a spore would when the temperature is cold. Furthermore during winter month’s people are exposed to little if no sun, which helps in our production of vitamin D. With a decreased production of vitamin D our body’s immune system is more susceptible to virus and bacteria that is in the air and on exposed surfaces.

The initial sign of the cold or flu is a sore throat. Again this is highly due to the dry air eliminating hydration from the mucus membranes such as the mouth, and throat. Although, when a sore throat appears most people immediately think that a cold or flu are the culprit, however many other things can cause a sore throat and it may be prudent to eliminate some of these other causes before treating any symptoms. Acid reflux, sinus drainage, breathing through your mouth, allergies, air pollution, tobacco smoke, alcohol, spicy food, muscle strain, yelling, HIV infection and tumors can cause symptoms of a sore throat. If you can reduce the cause of your sore throat down to a cold or flu them you either have a bacteria or viral infection. Predominantly, most sore throats turn out to be a virus. However, its that 1 in 5 chance that it could be a bacterial infection that you need to be cautious of because bacterial infections such as Strep can turn into other more serious conditions such as Rheumatoid Fever.

Determining whether you have a virus or bacterial infection without having to go to the doctor can be quite simple. By looking inside your mouth and at the back of the throat you can determine the specific characteristics that are causing your sore throat. When you look in your mouth if your throat is red and inflamed and you have some phlegm, which can be yellow or green then you have a virus, cold or flu. On the other hand if you look and you also see some red inflammation in addition to white, lumpy spots on the tonsils and throat, this is indicative of a bacterial infection such as Strep.

Some of the most common viral infections include the common cold, flu, Mononucleosis (mono), measles, chickenpox, and croup, If you have a cold virus a sore throat will on be painful for 1-2 days and then should subside. Other symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, cough and fever. Antibiotics cannot cure or treat a viral infection. Unfortunately there is no way to kill a viral infection; you have to let it run its course.

The most common bacterial infections that cause sore throats are Strep throat (Streptococcus), whooping cough, and Diphtheria. A bacterial infection can cause a sore throat with pain that persists for 3-7 days. The tonsils and lymph nodes in the neck will usually be swollen and aching. A fever higher than 101 degrees is usually caused by inflammation and the body trying to fight off the infection.  If you have a bacterial infection you should see a doctor immediately to prescribe antibiotics such as penicillin. A prescription should be taken for 7-10 days to eliminate the bacteria from the body.

In either cause, viral or bacteria, there are ways to ease the symptoms of a sore throat. The best thing to do at the first sign of a sore throat is to gargle with warm salt water. This kills germs that are present in the mouth and reduces any inflammation. If the sore throat persists, you don’t want your throat to remain dry because this will lead to pain and irritation. Using a humidifier will keep moisture in the air, which will continually re-hydrate your throat and mucus membranes. Throat sprays are a great way to keep you throat wet. Look for ingredients such as glycerin, phenol or menthol because they act as a numbing agent, which will reduce, pain that you may be experiencing from a sore throat. Slippery elm and honey are two great natural products that will coat the lining of the throat and soothe your symptoms. Ibuprofen is a better over the counter pain reliever because it reduces pain and swelling. Eating popsicles and drinking warm tea will keep your throat moist and reduce pain when swallowing.

The Causes and Effects of Tonsil Stones

A very common reason for bad breath, sometimes called halitosis is the accumulation of tonsil stones. These tonsil stones are white or yellowish balls that grow within the tonsillar crypts.

infrequently they’re swallowed or coughed up. Some folks describe the feeling as having something stuck at the rear of your throat. Although they do not actually hurt, they can be very uncomfortable. They may also be a very shaming condition for people that suffer from them due to the foul odour they emanate.
Tonsil stones are sometimes the fundamental reason a person has dog breath or bad breath, tonsillitis and sore throats. If you cough one up and squeeze it, there is a very powerful odor. The odour is most fittingly described as similar to the hint of rotten eggs. This smell is really made by an anaerobic bacteria which is a sulfur compound.

You can’t dispose of the tonsilloliths by frequent brushing, mouthwash or mints. They may mask the odor for a bit, but the tonsil stones will continue to be there. Therefore, the odour they produce will return.

As well as bad breath, some folk also experience sore throats or white piles that appear out of nowhere, coughing and throat infections. Antibiotics or antiseptics aren’t really valuable in removing the tonsil stones.
Yet, there are 2 methods to efficiently get rid of tonsil stones often in the comfort of your own residence. Some people recommend various homeopathic cures or Chinese herbs.
The tonsils are an important part of the human immune system. This condition plagues many more people than one might realize.

The bad breath will smell similar to rotten eggs – the reason is because there’s a high sulfuric content that accompanies the bacteria associated with the tonsil stones. Just about seventy percent of the people who have tonsil stones will have the odor.

It is critical to keep in mind that a sore throat does not always indicate tonsilloliths as it might even result thanks to a tonsillitis infection.

Other symptoms such as lumpy stuff which is white or yellowish in color may be seen as well .

Healthy Food Habits for Diabetics

Diabetes is a very serious illness and proper care is essential in remaining healthy. People with diabetes have to beware of what they eat and when they eat it. This particular illness is very sensitive and any little mistake can cause the blood sugar levels to go up tremendously. Very often, people who suffer from this disease are also stricken with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or obesity. Taking all of these things into consideration, a healthy diet for a diabetic is a must.

One healthy food habit for diabetics is to monitor their intake of carbohydrates. The proper carb intake is as important as the proper sugar intake. Carbs are simply a different type of sugar and they can impact the blood levels just the same as sugar in a cake or in candy. Some foods that should be served in controlled portions include pastas, potatoes, and breads. These foods along with other carb rich products raise blood sugar levels. A good diet for someone suffering from this illness should be low in sugar, fat, and carbohydrates.

Another thing to consider when you are a diabetic is to be consistent with meal times. Try not to let your blood sugars become too low by not eating or too high by eating too often. Also, when making a meal, be sure to understand what is written on the food label. Be aware of the ingredients, serving sizes, and any additives that a product may contain. Certain products may contain ingredients that will unknowingly add to your daily sugar intake. Therefore, it is important to be aware of what you are consuming. And for those people who are overweight and suffer from diabetes, it may be beneficial to consult with a doctor regarding any all natural supplements which aid in weight loss and blood sugar control. Natural supplements, along with all of the other tips presented earlier in this article, may aid in reducing the unpleasant side effects of diabetes.

Obesity Causes

How does obesity occur? The reasons are complex. Despite popular opinion, morbid obesity is not purely the result of eating too much. According to recent studies, it has been found that cases of morbid obesity are often rooted in genetic causes. If this holds true in an individual’s case, then dieting and exercise will have limited effects on the problem.

There are many other causes as to why one becomes obese. Depression is one the leading causes for obesity. It might not seem like it but studies show that people who are depressed need to find something they can control in their life, since they can’t control the emotional outbursts of depression. Hence eating food which gives them a sense of control. They use food as their security blanket which leads to over eating causing in some cases obesity. Genetics play a part withers or not you’re prone to becoming obese.

Accepting that simple fact – that obesity causes problems – and bringing it to the forefront of your mind can go a long way in helping you overcome obesity and get back to a healthy weight. Your body will thank you by giving you new energy that the obese just don’t get.

Obesity causes problems, but obesity is a problem that can be overcome and solved. It’s not an easy solution, and it requires a lot of hard work, but obesity can be fought and won. The more you realize that obesity causes problems, the more likely you’re going to stick with your game plan to getting back to a healthy weight and more importantly staying there.

Adopting sedentary lifestyles and lack of proper exercise are also the main causes of obesity. Other factors are thyroid problems, heredity, too many toxins in the body, and psychological factors such as stress.

Dangers of obesity

People who are obese are more prone to developing diseases compared to those with normal weight. Health risks that are associated with obesity are high blood pressure, cancer, shorter life expectancy, diabetes, heart problems, stroke, sleep disorders, and liver diseases. All of these are due to the fact that obesity can put too much stress on the organs of our body.

The main cause of obesity is overeating. However, not many people know the causes of overeating. And, the answer to this question is stress. Many people today, especially young people, are now living a hectic and stressful lifestyle. Because they live this kind of life, they tend to eat comfort foods to get rid of stress.

Stress can make you feel hungry even though you just ate. Because of this reason, you will tend to eat more portions and fast food chains are serving food portions that are high in fat, sugar and salt 700 percent larger than what is recommended by dietitians and nutritionists.

Pickwickian syndrome

This syndrome is caused by many factors; obesity is one of the causes. Enlarged tonsils, acromegaly, myxoedema are all other causes. What happens in this syndrome? During sleep there is collapse of pharyngeal walls leading to respiratory obstruction, sometimes for well over a minute. O2 and CO2 disturb sleep and there is daytime somnolence. Personality changes, intellectual deterioration, headaches, enuresis are all presenting features. One of the important aspects of treatment is to lose weight.

Nail Fungus or Nail Psoriasis?

Nail psoriasis usually appears in people that already have psoriasis on their skin. In rare cases nail psoriasis may appear before the skin manifestations. And in the rarest cases psoriasis will only appear on the nails of a person and will never appear anywhere else.

In the case when there are no psoriasis lesions on the skin of a person, and only the nails are damaged with psoriasis, it is sometimes difficult for a doctor to make a correct diagnosis. Nail psoriasis often resembles a fungal damage of the nails. In this case it is helpful if the person knows of her/his family history of psoriasis.

Nail psoriasis that is mistakenly diagnosed as a nail fungus will not receive a correct treatment, which is why it is very important to achieve the correct diagnosis.

Here are the most common signs of nail psoriasis:

– Point hemorrhage of the nails – your nails in this case may resemble a thimble. The surface of the nail plates is covered with tiny grains or pits. This happens due to the loss of some cells on the nail plate.
– Some of your nails may become loose and to partly separate from the place where they are connected to the finger. There will appear hollow white spaces underneath the nails. Usually these spaces first appear at the tip of the nail and then start progressing towards the root of the nail. These spaces will grow with time causing the nail to rise above the surface of the nail bed.
– The skin underneath the nail may become thick. This also leads to the separation of the nail from the nail bed and to the raising of the nail above the nail bed.
– There may appear a discoloration underneath the nail plate that resembles a blood or oil drop. It is usually of a yellow-red color.
– Sometimes there may appear lines going across the nails. These lines appear due to the inflammation of the skin underneath the nail affected by psoriasis.
– Sometimes psoriasis also appears on the skin of the finger right next to the root of the nail and next to the nail cuticle. The affected skin in this case looks like a usual psoriasis lesion – silvery-white scales on top of a red inflamed skin.
– The nail affected by psoriasis usually becomes brittle, thick and starts crumbling. It is especially uncomfortable when the toe nails get affected by psoriasis.
– Sometimes there may appear the so-called splinter hemorrhage – tiny black lines visible through the nail plate. Splinter hemorrhage appears when the capillaries on the tip of your fingers or toes bleed underneath the nail plate.

Due to the unhealthy state of the skin affected by psoriasis under the nail it may become infected with a fungus. Sometimes it happens the other way around – nail psoriasis occurs after a fungal infection of the nail.

With the correct diagnosis it is possible to treat nail psoriasis (with different degrees of success). Besides hormonal medicines and other drugs that your doctor may prescribe to you, there are some natural means that may help your nails to feel better.

Here are some of the natural ways that you can try at home:

– Try to eat more Calcium (milk, yogurts, cheese etc.) and gelatin.
– Before going to sleep soak your hands in a tray filled with sea water (you can collect the sea water at the sea and store it in a large bottle in the refrigerator).
– Before going to sleep soak your nails in warm vegetable oil (olive, sunflower etc.), herbal oil (chamomile etc.) or apply a plain fatty cream onto your nails and underneath of them.

Mouth Yeast Infection – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Mouth yeast infection is caused by a microscopic fungus called Candida Albicans. The symptoms of mouth yeast infection — commonly known as thrush — can be very uncomfortable. And anybody can have one; men, women, teenagers and children, especially newborn babies. Treatment is usually through prescription or over-the-counter medicines that are taken orally. But more and more sufferers are finding natural remedies for yeast infections to be more effective. Let’s look at the causes, symptoms and treatments in more detail…

Mouth yeast infection is caused by an imbalance of Canida Albicans and your body’s friendly bacteria in the mouth. The Candida flora exists quite naturally in your body and especially likes the warm, moist areas, such as your mouth, intestines, vagina, etc. Normally, your good bacteria keeps the Candia flora at healthy levels without any problems.

But sometimes conditions arise that allow the flora to multiply out of your good bacteria’s control, so that you end up with a yeast infection. These are things like; lowered immune system, antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, poor nutrition, taking drugs, and especially in the mouth – poorly fitting dentures, steroid inhalers, smoking, etc.

Mouth yeast infection symptoms are; white / cream raised spots over tongue and mucous membranes, thick white coating on tongue, fissures under coating, burning sensation, difficulty swallowing.

Mainstream treatment is usually liquid suspensions (swish and swallow), and / or, lozenges or pastilles to retain in mouth. These are obtained OTC or through your doctor. They are drug-based antifungal medications. The problem is that the fungus can become resistant to them. And because they are aimed at eliminating the symptoms of mouth yeast infection, they don’t address the root cause and any underlying conditions. The result can be very distressing recurring oral yeast infections, which can get worse each time.

Very many sufferers are now turning to natural remedies for yeast infections without the drawbacks of drug-based mainstream treatments. Simple things like garlic, plain yogurt, apple cider vinegar, etc. have proven to be very effective. But, of course, this is still only part of a complete cure for mouth yeast infection. Any natural treatment has to address all the issues that go to make yeast infections.

Here’s a link to where you can get the facts on probably the most popular natural yeast infection program over the Internet – http://how-to-get-rid-of-a-yeast-infection.blogspot.com. Ex-sufferers have even reported cures in as little as 12 hours.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, also commonly known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that inflicts unusual swing not only in a person’s mood but also the level of energy, irritability, aggressiveness, ability to function and temperament. Although we all experience certain changes in our mood from time to time, someone who suffers from bipolar disorder experience this in much greater intensity and severity, often it becomes so extreme and disruptive that this disorder interferes with a person’s normal daily life.

This condition can be dangerous and even life-threatening if left undiagnosed and untreated. A patient who is suffering from bipolar disorder may deteriorate from feeling depressed to feeling absolutely suicidal as the sense of sadness, loneliness and hopelessness take hold. This disorder usually develops in late adolescence, around the age of eighteen or early adulthood. However many sufferers live with this condition for years before it is properly diagnosed. Without treatment, the usual course of bipolar disorder tends to go from bad to worse. The risk of suicide appears to be higher earlier in the course of the illness, consequently being able to detect the symptoms of bipolar disorder early and learning how best to manage it may help decrease the risk of death by suicide.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

How can you identify the symptoms of bipolar disorder? It is sometimes quite easy to dismiss this condition especially among teenagers as they are usually full of angst, depressed or go through different phases of intense emotions during late adolescence or early adulthood. Parents do need to keep an eye on their teenage children’s feelings and if these episodes of mania or depression do not subside or stop altogether, they could well be exhibiting the symptoms of a bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder causes dramatic mood swings, from overly high, called a mania episode to an overly low mood called severe depression. Some of bipolar disorder’s manic symptoms include restlessness, extreme irritability, super-charged energy level, racing thoughts and ideas followed by the inability to express them in an understandable manner, feeling excessively “high” or euphoric, feeling jumpy or needing very little sleep, total lack of concentration, becoming easily distracted, unrealistic beliefs in one’s abilities and powers and poor judgment. Some may also experience increased sexual drive, becoming intrusive, aggressive or provocative and still deny that anything is wrong with them.

On the other end of the scale, symptoms of a depressive episode include an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness or pessimism, a prolonged feeling of emptiness, anxiety and extreme sadness, a sense of guilt or worthlessness, difficulty in concentrating, remembering or making decisions, sleeplessness or chronic fatigue leading to excessive sleeping, loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, weight gain or loss, and continuous thought of suicide or death.

Seeking Treatment

A sufferer of a bipolar disorder will need to be diagnosed by a certified professional before treatment can commence. Most people with this condition, including those with the most severe forms, can achieve substantial stabilization of their mood swings and related symptoms with proper medication and psychosocial treatment over a period of time. Both the patient and doctor must work closely together every step of the way to monitor progress and make the necessary adjustments to the treatment plan to ensure treatment effectiveness.

Depression and Seniors

Senior depression has proved especially devastating among older adults because the disease has been so misunderstood in that population. Left alone, depression not only prevents older adults from enjoying life like they could be, it also takes a heavy toll on health. But if you learn to spot the signs of depression and find effective ways to help, you or your loved ones can remain happy and vibrant throughout the golden years

Signs of Depression change as we grow older. The difficult changes that are a part of the ageing process—such as the death of a spouse or medical problems—can lead to depression, especially in those without a strong support system. But depression is not a normal or necessary part of aging. In fact, most seniors are satisfied with their lives despite the challenges of growing old.

Senior Depression is not a result of normal aging. Loss is painful—whether a loss of independence, mobility, health, your long-time career, or someone you love. Grieving over these losses is normal, even if the feelings of sadness last for weeks or months. Losing all hope and joy, however, is not normal. It’s depression. For the elderly, depression is a common problem, with only a small percentage getting the help they need. There are many reasons depression in older adults is so often overlooked: Some assume seniors have good reason to be down or that depression is just part of aging. Elderly adults are often isolated, with few around to notice their distress. Physicians are more likely to ignore depression in older patients, concentrating instead on physical complaints. Finally, many depressed seniors are reluctant to talk about their feelings or ask for help. That lack of understanding is just one of several reasons why older adults may not seek and receive the treatment they need, with sometimes tragic results: the growing problem of geriatric suicide.

What triggers Senior Depression? Coaches often find seniors living alone; their opportunities for going out and friends to go out with are getting smaller due to deaths or relocation. It has gotten increasingly difficult to go out due to illness or loss of driving privileges. Of major importance is a loss of feeling of useful. They believe they have nothing to contribute or having retired, feel a loss of identity that was connected too their career. Illness and disability will often be a source of depression. Experiencing chronic or severe pain; cognitive decline; damage to body image due to surgery or disease can take a toll on the psyche. Many prescription medications can trigger or exacerbate depression. Seniors are often over medicated. Fear is very prevalent as an underlying factor. Many have an unnatural fear of death or dying; fear of falling, or financial problems. Depression can also be brought on during the grief process. The loss of friends, family members, and pets, is a reminder that their time will come. The loss of a long term spouse or partner, is often times a precursor to their own death.

Seniors don’t always fit the typical picture of depression. Many depressed seniors don’t claim to feel sad at all. They may complain, instead, of low motivation, a lack of energy, or physical problems. In fact, physical complaints, such as arthritis pain or headaches that have gotten worse, are often the predominant symptom of depression in the elderly.

Older adults with depression are also more likely to show symptoms of anxiety or irritability. They may constantly wring their hands, pace around the room, or fret obsessively about money, their health, or the state of the world.

Recovery Coaches look for these clues in senior depression. Older adults who deny feeling sad or depressed may still have major depression. Here are the clues to look for: Oddly, a senior will exhibit anxiety and worry, rather than typical depression. One must take the time to really observe the senior to see where the anxiety stems from, and if it could be depression. Unexplained or aggravated aches and pains Unexplained or aggravated aches and pains, Hopelessness, Helplessness, Memory problems Loss of feeling of pleasure, Slowed movement, Irritability, Lack of interest in personal care (skipping meals, forgetting medications, neglecting personal hygiene)

Older Adults Less Likely to Seek Treatment for Depression. Family can hinder the process of detecting depression and getting treatment for those experiencing symptoms. Often times they still consider them the adult and themselves as the children. They do not know how to help mom or dads, who have always been so strong and independent. Or as many people, including Medical Professionals, have the misconception that senior depression is simply part of growing old.

The stigma of seeking mental health treatment is a bigger factor among seniors, many of whom grew up at a time when having a mental health problem was often considered synonymous with being “crazy” or incompetent. Recovery Coaching is a gentle bridge that helps the individual much as your best friend would convince you to seek treatment.

Increase Suicide Risk among Older Adults. Adults age 65 and over comprise only 13 percent of the US population, they account for 20 percent of all suicide deaths. Suicidal elders often select a means of suicide (efficient and lethal) that does not permit intervention. That means we need to know how to recognize the behavior in time to intervene. Well over 75% of older people who completed suicide had recent contact with a physician.

When a senior has severe depression, they need appropriate treatment. As with most depressed individuals, they cannot see a way out. If you know someone who is dealing with depression, get professional help.

Anxiety is Not All in Your Mind- It's in Your Chakras!

Do you experience feelings of anxiety and can’t find a cause? Are you easily overwhelmed by simple tasks? Do you having trouble facing the world? You are not alone! Millions of people are experiencing this as well and there is hope that doesn’t require taking drugs with harmful side effects!

In my practice as a clairvoyant energetic healer I commonly see people who come to me with symptoms of anxiety. Many people who have suffered from crippling fear, phobias and anxiety for years have achieved a sense of serenity from having their chakras cleared, energized and balanced.

Anxiety can have many causes, but I see some commonalities with most of my suffering clients. Many chakras may be contributing to the issue. The following are the signs and symptoms in each chakra:

*The Crown chakra that connects us to our Highest Self or Divine Source, will often be congested with old emotions and hurts. There is often a lack of connection to the Divine that can be easily fixed within seconds. This helps to build a sense of trust and feeling protected.

*The Brow/Third Eye chakra can be heavily congested in people who worry too much. It can also contribute to anxiety in people who are sensitive or psychic and don’t realize it.

*The Throat chakra can house much congestion and fear in people who don’t feel safe or comfortable expressing themselves and their opinions. This leaves a person feeling isolated and cut off from the rest of the world.

*The Heart chakra can be heavily congested with old pain and can be too closed or too open. When the chakra is too closed, energy backs up and leaves one disconnected from their feelings. When it is too open, an obsessive worry for other people can occur, causing a person to put other’s needs above their own.

*The Solar Plexus can be too open or too closed. When its too closed, a person will feel overwhelmed by everything. They will be fearful and feel helpless in many situations. When it is too open a person can drive themselves crazy by feeling they have to keep moving and get stuff done.

*The Sacral chakra can be filled with all the guilt, anger, remorse, pain, and fear we have felt. People tend to store a lot of old emotions and traumas here and clearing this chakra usually brings a lot of relief to sufferers.

*The Root chakra is our survival chakra. It holds our fears about finances, housing, career, and even possessions. When this chakra is congested with fears and worries, we can experience overwhelming anxiety and that feeling that we are in danger.

By working with a qualified clairvoyant energetic practioner to balance, and clear your chakras from all that you are storing there, you can achieve amazing and long-lasting results that can put you back in control of your own life!

*Energetic healing is not a substitution for qualified medical help. By law I cannot claim to treat, diagnose or cure any illness.

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety isn’t necessarily a problem. But when it becomes persistent, powerful and interferes with daily life, it’s called an anxiety disorder. It can affect about one in 20 people. But sadly, only a tiny proportion of sufferers will seek treatment.

Anxiety disorders are the most common of all the mental disorders. At the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Federal agency that conducts and supports research related to mental disorders, mental health, and the brain, scientists are learning more and more about the nature of anxiety disorders, their causes, and how to alleviate them. NIMH also conducts educational outreach activities about anxiety disorders and other mental illnesses.

Causes of anxiety disorder

Genetic predisposition. Anxiety disorders tend to run in families, suggesting there’s a genetic factor involved in the cause. Studies show that if one identical twin has an anxiety disorder, the second twin is more likely to have an anxiety disorder than if they were unrelated.

Personal characteristics. Researchers believe that people who have low self-esteem and poor coping skills may be prone to anxiety disorders.

What Are the Types of Anxiety Disorders?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)  – OCD is characterized by unwanted thoughts or behaviors that seem impossible to stop or control. You may be troubled by obsessions, such as a recurring worry that you forgot to turn off the oven or that you might hurt someone. You may also suffer from uncontrollable compulsions, such as washing your hands over and over.

Post-traumatic stress disorder: PTSD is a condition that can develop following a traumatic and/or terrifying event, such as a sexual or physical assault, the unexpected death of a loved one, or a natural disaster. People with PTSD often have lasting and frightening thoughts and memories of the event, and tend to be emotionally numb.

Symptoms of Anxiety

mood and other emotional problems, eating pattern changes, sleep pattern changes, mental changes, social problems, physical problems, childhood or adolescent depression

The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the following six symptoms (with at least some symptoms present for more days than not for the past 6 months; children don’t need to meet as many criteria).

Treatment of anxiety disorder

The choices of treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, and/or pharmaceutical therapy (medications). Mainstream treatment for anxiety consists of the prescription of anxiolytic agents and/or antidepressants and/or referral to a Psychologist/cognitive-behavioral therapist. Treatment controversy arises because some studies indicate that a combination of the medications and behavioral therapy can be more effective than either one alone, however others studies suggest pharmacological interventions are largely just pallative, and can actually interfere with the mechanisms of successful therapy.

It’s important to understand what anxiety treatment can and can’t do. An accurate diagnosis and proper treatment increase the odds that your symptoms will lessen significantly or disappear altogether. Once symptoms are under control, treatment can keep them from flaring up again and can help prevent a second anxiety disorder from developing. Treatment often improves or controls the problems caused by anxiety. For example, if anxiety is impairing your ability to work or creating friction between you and your family and friends, treatment can help you function better and improve your relationships.
