1992 KLR 250

The Kawasaki KLR250 was a motorcycle produced from 1984 to 2005, with only minor changes during the model run. This lightweight dualsport motorcycle was used for several years by the US military for a variety of tasks, including messenger duty and reconnaissance. It was produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan and exported to many parts of the world, including the U.S. and Canada, Europe and Australia. The Chilean national police (“carabineros”) made extensive use of the KLR250.

Somewhat similar in appearance to the larger KLR650 (sold in the same colors), the 250 is often described as being a better trail bike (due to lighter weight and reduced bulk) but less enjoyable on long stretches of highway. The user-friendly power delivery and light weight make it a popular bike for novice riders. Like the 650, the KLR250 has continued to sell well into the 21st century despite being questionably “state of the art” even at its introduction, and having no styling changes, except paint and the color of the plastic. Unlike the 650, the 250 shares many engine parts with an ATV sold by Kawasaki, the KSF250 “Mojave”. This has resulted in the availability of engine performance parts, though many owners prefer to use their bike relatively unmodified.

Owners report highway fuel economy figures ranging from 55-70 mpg U.S. (3.4 to 4.3 L/100 km), and city fuel economy of 45-50 mpg U.S> (4.7 to 5.2 L/100 km). The combination of excellent fuel economy, high reliability, light weight and easy handling have made it a favorite among dualsport riders as well as urban commuters and it remains popular even though production has ceased.

Sciatica Pain – Causes and Symptoms

Sciatic pain usually starts in the buttocks and extends down the rear of the thigh and lower leg to the sole of the foot and along the outer side of the lower leg to the top of the foot. Pain may also be present in the lower back.

Sciatica refers to pain along the path of the sciatica nerve. It is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. Fortunately, most cases of sciatica are not serious and usually resolve within six weeks. The sciatic nerve branches off nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord – it’s two branches run from the lower back through the each side of the pelvis, buttocks, back of leg to the foot.

Sciatica refers to pain that begins in the hip and buttocks and continues all the way down the leg. This condition is often accompanied by low back pain, which can be more or less severe than the leg pain. The term “sciatica” indicates that the sciatic nerve, which travels from the lower back through the buttocks and into the leg, is thought to be the cause of the pain in this condition. True sciatica is a condition that occurs when a herniated lumbar disc compresses one of the contributing roots of the sciatic nerve. This type of low back pain is less common than other causes and conditions that produce back pain.
Causes
The sciatic nerve is commonly injured by fractures of the pelvis, gunshot wounds, or other trauma to the buttocks or thigh. Prolonged sitting or lying with pressure on the buttocks may also injure it. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, can typically damage many different nerves, including the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve may also be harmed by pressure from masses such as a tumor or abscess, or by bleeding in the pelvis.

Symptoms

Psoriatic Arthritis – Jonathan Blood-smyth

Psoriatic skin disease is a relatively common condition for which the treatments are somewhat unpleasant and not entirely effective. Even before the skin condition becomes obvious there can be signs of joint involvement in around fifteen percent of sufferers and even without joint involvement soft tissues can show changes which are typical in the arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers typically have a greater number of joints affected than in psoriatic arthritis, with perhaps a similar pattern presentation and in some examples only one or two joints are involved. The most involved anatomical areas are the entheses, which are the connections between the bones and the ligaments and tendons. The Achilles tendon is the largest enthesis in the body and commonly affected by inflammatory changes and pain.

There are a large number of entheses in the body and these may be responsible for the more widely spread symptoms which can occur without joints being involved. The ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and the CRP (C-reactive protein) blood tests are routine investigations and both can be elevated in inflammatory conditions. If a joint condition is suspected and there are no signs of psoriasis it is wise to carefully check the person’s body for hidden signs of psoriatic skin lesions to exclude this highly genetic condition.

Typically 30% of people diagnosed with this condition will suffer with non-progressive disease in a few affected joints. This presentation is usually effectively treated with steroid injections into the joints as required and by symptomatic management. Identifying this group initially is important to exclude those with worse disease who are likely to show increased inflammatory blood markers, to be male, to have a larger number of affected joints and to have used steroids previously.
