Things to Avoid When Trying To Get Pregnant – What You Should Do When You Want To Quickly Conceive a Baby

In life, the id is always in constant battle with the superego. Simply put, what you want is commonly at the opposite end with what is good for you. This is especially true in pregnancy. Many of the practices you have been accustomed to and have integrated into your routine can actually limit your chances of getting pregnant in addition to other non-modifiable factors, such as age and genetic make-up.

Of course, you can’t get rid of the latter; so for you to increase your chances of conceiving, you have to change your lifestyle to accommodate the pro-pregnancy practices. Below are things to avoid when trying to get pregnant:

1) Alcohol consumption. Moderate consumption of alcohol on a daily basis which is equal to sixty grams of absolute alcohol can mess up with the feedback system of your hormones. This, in turn, delays ovulation or causes ovulatory dysfunction and brings about problems with the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle. Limiting or totally eliminating your alcohol consumption is at the top of the list of things to avoid when trying to get pregnant.

2) Cigarette smoking. Smoking is not only detrimental to health but can lower fertility. It has been established that more than ten percent of the subfertility cases are due to the smoking of more than ten sticks of cigarettes per day. The harmful chemicals in one stick of cigarette can cause changes in the reproductive system, which limit the chances of conceiving.

3) Stress. Unlike the first two things to avoid when trying to get pregnant, stress is considered an inevitable aspect of life. What can be avoided is the reaction to stress. One can view any type of stressor as something which can be handled easily, thus avoiding the ill effects of stress on the body.

Colon Cancer – Common Causes of Colon Cancer

The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Together, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine (also known as the large bowel). Tumors of the colon and rectum are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. Benign tumors of the large intestine are called polyps. Malignant tumors of the large intestine are called cancers.

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last 6 inches of the colon. Together, they’re often referred to as colorectal cancers. About 112,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer annually, and about 41,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society.

Most colorectal cancers begin as a polyp (say “pahl-ip”). At first, a polyp is a small, harmless growth in the wall of the colon. However, as a polyp gets larger, it can develop into a cancer that grows and spreads.

Common Causes of Colon Cancer

Most colorectal cancers arise from adenomatous polyps—clusters of abnormal cells in the glands covering the inner wall of the colon. Over time, these abnormal growths enlarge and ultimately degenerate to become adenocarcinomas.

Adenomas: These polyps have the potential to become cancerous and are usually removed during screening tests such as flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

Alcohol: Research has indicated that alcohol increases colorectal cancer risk. Research has also shown that it lowers it, or that it has no effect at all. So which is right? All of it may be. The key appears to be what kind of alcohol you’re drinking.

Inflammatory polyps: These polyps may follow a bout of ulcerative colitis. Some inflammatory polyps may become cancerous, so having ulcerative colitis increases your overall risk of colon cancer.

Age: About 90 percent of people diagnosed with colon cancer are older than 50. Colon cancer can occur in younger people, but it occurs much less frequently.
Environment: Research has shown that environment can play a big part in colon cancer development. Where you live, who’s around you, your occupation, and even when you work may all influence your risk of developing colon cancer.
Diets high in fat are believed to predispose humans to colorectal cancer. In countries with high colorectal cancer rates, the fat intake by the population is much higher than in countries with low cancer rates. It is believed that the breakdown products of fat metabolism lead to the formation of cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). Diets high in vegetables and high-fiber foods such as whole-grain breads and cereals may rid the bowel of these carcinogens and help reduce the risk of cancer.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by early-onset colorectal cancer (i.e., develops before age 50) and multiple colorectal cancers. This syndrome also may be associated with other cancers (e.g., cancer of the small intestine, endometrium, stomach, and renal pelvis).

Smoking: Smoking may increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer by as much as 40%. Smokers may swallow some of the cancer-causing chemicals and this may be an explanation for the increased risk of colorectal cancer in smokers. Some of these substances are also absorbed into the bloodstream thus causing increased risk of many cancers.

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids (also referred to as myoma, leiomyoma, leiomyomata, and fibromyoma) are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that grow within the muscle tissue of the uterus. Between 20-50% of women of childbearing age have uterine fibroids. While many women do not experience any problems, symptoms can be severe enough to require treatment.

Fibroids range in size from very small (coin sized) to larger than a melon. A very large uterine fibroid can cause the uterus to expand to the size of a six or seven-month pregnancy. There can either be one dominant fibroid or a cluster of many small fibroids.

What are common symptoms of uterine fibroids?

  • Very heavy and prolonged menstrual periods
  • Pain in the back of the legs
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pressure on the bladder which leads to a constant need to urinate, incontinence, or the inability to empty the bladder
  • Pressure on the bowel which can lead to constipation and/or bloating
  • An enlarged abdomen which may be mistaken for weight gain or pregnancy

How do I know if I have uterine fibroids?

During a visit to investigate these symptoms, your doctor will check the size of your uterus. If it feels enlarged, your doctor may order an ultrasound or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) session, which can confirm the presence, location and size of fibroids. After identifying the size and location of your fibroid(s), and possibly after other diagnostic tests, your doctor may be able to rule out other potentially more serious conditions, and advise you of your options and a recommended course of treatment for the fibroids. If you do not notice any symptoms caused by fibroids there is no need to treat them. Your doctor may want to watch them and check for any growth.

India finds the infrastructure and technology at par with that in USA, UK and Europe. uterine fibroid surgery is one the common treatments for patients coming to India. Natural Cure For Ovarian Cysts – How To Cure Ovarian Cysts Naturally ?????

Natutral Cure For Ovarian Cysts – How To Cure Ovarian Cysts Naturally

There are various treatment options available for women who would like to know how to cure ovarian cysts Naturally, the main types being conventional treatments (such as those offered by your doctor) or natural cures for ovarian cysts.

Conventional treatments may include taking the combined oral contraceptive pill, as this prevents ovulation and therefore the development of new follicles, or having surgery to either drain or remove existing cysts. Many women though would prefer not to take hormones and most would like to avoid surgery at all costs!

Providing you have been reassured by your doctor that your cysts are not dangerous, you may prefer to try out a natural treatment first. Indeed there is substantial evidence to show that sadly, out of those women who try out conventional treatment, over 90% will have a recurrence of their cysts and many find that they are worse than before.

This is definitely not the case when natural cures for ovarian cysts are used.

The best type of natural treatment is to use a holistic system which takes into account the fact that good health exists because of a good balance of all aspects of the body, including physical, mental and spiritual health. Although at one time, holistic treatment was viewed rather skeptically by the mainstream medical profession, there is very much a growing trend to incorporate many aspects of modern day treatment for many conditions, including for those women looking at how to cure ovarian cysts.

You might wonder how this relates to ovarian cysts!

It is well known that there is no “one” cause of these types of cysts but rather that they develop due to the subtle interaction of a number of factors which are all intertwined. This means that although some one-dimensional treatments may give symptomatic relief, there is no way on earth that they can cure this condition as they do not treat the root cause.

The only way to achieve success is to use multifaceted natural cures for ovarian cysts which take into account all the possible causes and eliminate each and every one from the body. Done correctly, this absolutely ensures that the body becomes totally hostile to the formation of new cysts and existing ones cannot thrive.

There are a few simple steps you can take right now if you are wanting to know how to cure ovarian cysts naturally which will give you some symptomatic relief. Firstly, heat therapy is helpful for so many conditions and as far as treating ovarian cysts is concerned, this is certainly the case. Try using a heat pad on the abdomen. Alternatively, a warm bath can work wonders. Another tip is to try gently massaging the affected area as like heat therapy, this can improve circulation in the area and both heat and massage are good natural cures for ovarian cysts as both can help the cysts begin to break down.

Chamomile tea is also though to help to soothe the tense muscles in the area which contribute to the pain and a component in the tea can help to break down the cysts.

It is vital to remember that as with most natural approaches, there is not one single treatment which will form a cure although each small positive step you take will begin to relieve you of the symptoms. Natural remedies tend to focus on treating the whole person and eliminating all the possible causes which means that the root cause is eliminated.

How To Cope With Oral Thrush – Yeast Infection Of The Mouth

There are many definitions of thrush. It’s sometimes used to describe yeast infection as a category, yeast infection in the mouth, and even yeast infection in a baby’s mouth.

Here we will focus on thrush in the mouth, or oral thrush, both for adults and for babies. Oral thrush can exist on the tongue, on the insides and roof of the mouth and even spread to the esophagus. In some cases it can be very painful and may restrict one’s diet.

What are the causes of mouth thrush?
Our body naturally has yeast cells. These occur in the mouth, skin, vagina and even in the rectum. Under normal conditions, yeast cells are kept at bay by other microorganisms in our body, and it’s only when we become deficient in those microorganisms that yeast gets a chance to grow and become a problem.

Oral thrush can occur simply by taking antibiotics or being on chemotherapy. Having thrush and diabetes, or HIV is not uncommon because of the weakened immune system. Even wearing dentures may result in thrush. All of these create conditions in which ‘good” microorganisms are depleted and the yeast cells thrive.

What are the symptoms of oral thrush?
Typical symptoms include white, yellow or cream colored marks on the tongue and in the mouth.
Avoid scraping the marks off since this causes cuts on the tongue. If you think you may have oral thrush, do a search on the Internet for “pictures of oral thrush” and then you can compare to your own situation.

How to treat thrush
When planning a treatment for thrush, think short and long term. In the short term, there are many oral medications that will take care of it and your doctor can advise you on what to take. If you are looking for a natural treatment for thrush, then consider garlic, or yogurt with acidophilus.

Alternatively, you can find books on the Internet for treating oral thrush naturally. Which ever path you take, try and understand what was the root cause and address that so that thrush does not reoccur.

Thrush in infants
Yeast infections in the form of oral thrush or diaper rash are common in newborns. The combination of thrush and breastfeeding can result in thrush being passed to the mother, even when the baby just has diaper rash.

Nipples with yeast infection may appear very red and be extra sensitive. There may be pain between feedings and the pain may run deep in the breast both during and after breastfeeding. Gential violet is a solution that is popular for mothers with yeast infection on the breast.

Thrush and HIV
Thrush occurs because of a deficiency in the immune system and is common in HIV patients, but is thrush an early symptom of HIV? Not necessarily, for as mentioned earlier there are many other causes. However, the appearance of thrush for an HIV patient might indicate changing conditions in the immune system and should be discussed with one’s doctor.

If you think you have oral thrush, consult your doctor before taking steps to cure it. The symptoms of oral thrush are similar to other conditions, so it’s best to know what is the issue as soon as possible.

Hepatitis B and Unani Treatment

Hepatitis is a general term that means inflammation of the liver. The liver can become inflamed as a result of infection, a disorder of theimmune system, or exposure to alcohol, certain medications, toxins, or poisons.

  • Hepatitis B is caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This infection has 2 phases: acute and chronic.
    • Acute (new, short-term) hepatitis B occurs shortly after exposure to the virus. A small number of people develop a very severe, life-threatening form of acute hepatitis called fulminant hepatitis.
    • Chronic (ongoing, long-term) hepatitis B is an infection with HBV that lasts longer than 6 months. Once the infection becomes chronic, it may never go away completely.
    • About 90-95% of people who are infected are able to fight off the virus so their infection never becomes chronic. Only about 5-10 percent of adults infected with HBV go on to develop chronic infection.
  • HBV infection is one of the most important causes of infectious hepatitis. People with chronic HBV infection are called chronic carriers. About two-thirds of these people do not themselves get sick or die of the virus, but they can transmit it to other people. The remaining one third develop chronic hepatitis B, a disease of the liver that can be very serious.
    • The liver is an essential organ that the body needs to stay alive. Its most important functions are filtering many drugs and toxins out of the blood, storing energy for later use, helping with the absorption of certain nutrients from food, and producing substances that fight infections and control bleeding.  The liver has an incredible ability to heal itself, but it can only heal itself if nothing is damaging it.

Causes The hepatitis B virus is known as a blood-borne virus because it is transmitted from one person to another via blood.

  • Semen and saliva, which contain small amounts of blood, also carry the virus.
  • The virus can be transmitted whenever any of these bodily fluids come in contact with the broken skin or a mucous membrane (in the mouth, genital organs, or rectum) of an uninfected person.
  • People who are at increased risk of being infected with the hepatitis B virus include the following:
    • Men or women who have multiple sex partners, especially if they don’t use a condom
    • Men who have sex with men
    • Men or women who have sex with a person infected with HBV
    • People with other STDPeople who inject drugs with shared needles
    • People who receive transfusions of blood or blood products
    • People who undergo dialysis for kidney disease
    • Institutionalized mentally handicapped people and their attendants and family members
    • Health care workers who are stuck with needles or other sharp instruments contaminated with infected blood
    • Infants born to infected mothers
  • In some cases, the source of transmission is never known.
  • The younger you are when you become infected with the hepatitis B virus, the more likely you are to develop chronic hepatitis B. The rates of progression to chronic hepatitis B are as follows:
    • 90% of infants infected at birth
    • 30% of children infected at age 1-5 years
    • 6% of people infected after age 5 years
    • 5-10% of infected adult

Symptoms Half of all people infected with the hepatitis B virus have no symptoms.

  • Symptoms develop within 30-180 days of exposure to the virus. The symptoms are often compared to flu. Most people think they have flu and never think about having HBV infection.
    • Appetite loss
    • Feeling tired , Nausea and vomiting, Itching all over the body, Pain over the liver (on the right side of the abdomen, under the lower rib cage, Jaundice, Urine becomes dark in color (like cola or tea).
    • Stools are pale in color (grayish or clay colored).
  • Many types of acute viral hepatitis  have similar symptoms. Fulminant hepatitis is an unusual illness. It is a severe form of acute hepatitis that can be life threatening if not treated right away. The symptoms develop very suddenly.
    • Mental disturbances such as confusion,  extreme sleepiness or hallucinations.
    • Sudden collapse with fatigue, Jaundice, Swelling of the abdomen
  • Prolonged nausea and vomiting can cause dehydration. If you have been vomiting repeatedly, you may notice these symptoms:
    • Feeling tired or weak
    • Feeling confused or having difficulty concentrating
    • Not urinating
    • Irritability
  • Symptoms of liver failure may include the following:
    • Fluid retention causing swelling of the belly and sometimes the legs
    • Weight gain due to ascites
    • Persistent jaundice
    • Loss of appetite and weight.
    • Vomiting with blood in the vomit
    • Bleeding from the nose, mouth, or rectum or blood in the stool
    • Hepatic encephalopathy (excessive sleepiness, mental confusion, and in advanced stages, development of coma)

Diagnosis

Since many people with hepatitis B do not have symptoms, they do not know they have the disease.

  • Hepatitis B is often discovered accidentally when you see your health care provider for another reason.
  • Blood tests done for an annual check-up, insurance purposes, or before surgery may show abnormalities in the liver blood test results.

If your health care provider determines that you may be at risk for contracting hepatitis, you will have blood drawn.

  • The laboratory will examine the blood to determine how well your liver is functioning, if this has not already been done.
  • Your blood will be tested to determine whether you have been exposed to certain hepatitis viruses and, possibly, other viruses.
  • If you have had a large amount of vomiting or have not been able to take in liquids, your blood electrolytes may also be checked to ensure that your blood chemistry is in balance.
  • Other tests may be ordered to rule out other medical conditions.
  • Liver biopsy – This involves removal of a tiny piece of the liver. It is usually done by inserting a long needle into the liver and withdrawing the tissue. The tissue is examined under a microscope to detect changes in the liver. A biopsy may be done to detect the extent of liver damage or to evaluate how well a treatment is working.

Increase Your Liver Function with Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice does wonders for the body when it comes to detoxification. The main reason why this is so, is because wheatgrass juice does wonders for the overall health of the Liver. By improving the health of just this one organ, we can improve the well-being of our whole entire body. Wheatgrass juice offers, many nutrients, and vitamins that are essential to keep the liver functioning at its optimal level.

The liver is the largest internal organ and the largest gland in your body. It is responsible for up to over 500 different functions. Some of its functions include hormone production, detoxification, glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, cleansing the blood and reorganizing nutrients. The liver is so essential that the body can not compensate for its absence. Up to 90 percent of the liver can be destroyed before any serious symptoms arise. And even though the liver is one of the few organs that have regenerative powers, once it is too late, it is very hard to reverse damage done to the liver. One of the main responsibilities of the liver is to clean the blood and remove toxic waste. Unfortunately, when the liver is damaged by infectious microbes, irritants and fatty degeneration it loses many of its “blood cleansing abilities.”

Wheatgrass juice contains many vitamins and nutrients that the body needs and uses, but it contains 3 compounds that are essential for a healthy liver. The “three compounds found abundantly in wheatgrass help the liver stay vital and healthy… Choline works to prevent the deposition of fat, magnesium helps draw out excess fat in the same way magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) will draw pus from an infection, and potassium acts as an invigorator and stimulant.”

Dr. Wattenburg of the University of Minnesota found that when rats were fed a diet of all vitamins and minerals, but highly purified (our diets are about 50 – 75% purified) they were unable to produce an enzyme that deactivates carcinogens in the liver. However, when these same rats were fed greens, they were able to produce an enzyme called indole that is found in wheatgrass, which has the ability to deactivate carcinogens in the liver.

Another interesting find was reported by Dr. Charles Schnabel in January 1980, published in Acres USA. He compared the health of Leghorn hens receiving 5 percent fresh young grass to Leghorn hens being fed alfalfa. At the conclusion of his experiment he found that the hens being fed the young fresh grass “were far healthier than the others, as indicated by their richer, darker blood and livers (grass-fed hens had dark mahogany-colored livers, while the alfalfa-fed hen’s livers were light tan in color).”  As you can see, that even though extensive research has yet to be done on wheatgrass and liver function, there is plenty of literature and research that shows that wheatgrass can help tremendously to improve liver function.

The liver is not only the largest internal organ in your body, it is possibly one of the most essential organs that you have. Wheatgrass juice contains an abundance of vitamins, nutrients and compounds that will help to increase the overall function of your liver. That is why you should try wheatgrass juice and begin to incorporate it in your everyday diet. You have nothing to lose, but a world of health to gain.

Home Remedies for Kidney Stones, Kidney Stones Treatment

Do you see blood in your urine? Do you feel very severe pain in your abdomen, groin or sides? If your answer is yes, then see your doctor because you might have kidney stones. Kidney stones or sometimes called renal calculi are hard mineral and crystalline materials that are formed inside the kidney or the urinary tract.  Research has shown that one in every twenty individuals develop kidney stone(s) at some stage in their lives.

Kidney stones can be treated in using different methods, some of these methods include:

1)    Medical Treatment

If the patient feels severe pain (which means the stones are blocking the urinary tract or there is an infection), doctors usually suggest surgical or medical treatment. Medical treatment options are:

a)    Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) – this method of treating kidney stones involves using “shock waves” which is known to pass through the body very easily but are quite strong enough to break up a kidney stone(s) in the process. ESWL is the most popular method for treating kidney stones.

b)    Open surgery – in this treatment the patient goes under the surgeon’s knife. The surgeon removes the stone(s) by cutting the side or belly of the patient in order to reach the kidneys. This method of treating kidney stones is seldom used.

c)    Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy or Nephrolithotripsy – this treatment is carried out if ESWL doesn’t work for the patient or if the kidney stone is too large. The surgeon places a narrow telescope into the patient’s kidney through an incision in the back of the patient. The surgeon then removes the stone (lithotomy) or breaks it up and then removes the broken up stones (lithotripsy).

d)    Ureteroscopy – this procedure is quite invasive. This treatment involves the surgeon passing an “ureteroscope” (a very thin telescope tube) up the patient’s urinary tract to the location of the stone(s). As soon as the stone is located, the surgeon uses instruments to remove or break up the stones for easier removal. This medical treatment is commonly used if the stones have moved from the kidney to the urethra.

2)    Home Remedies for Kidney Stones

Most kidney stones that are about 5mm to 10mm usually pass on their own because studies have shown that one or two out of every ten kidney stones need medical attention. It takes about one to three weeks in order for kidney stones to pass after using home remedies. Here are some home remedies that help you treat kidney stones:

a)    Drink lots of water: Drinking lots of water will keep your urine clear, drink up to 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.

b)    Nettle leaf: This leaf is known for its urination promotion abilities. Drinking up to 2 to 3 cups of nettle leaf tea daily may prevent the formation of kidney stones. Nettle leaf works by constantly keeping water flowing through the body’s kidneys and bladder; it also helps to wash away bacteria. Nettle leaf tea can be prepared by simply mixing 1 or 2 tablespoons of dried nettle leaf with a cup of hot water and leave to infuse for 10 to 15 minutes.

c)    Vitamin supplements: Taking vitamin A and B6 supplement will definitely prevent the formation of kidney stones and treat kidney stones permanently; that is, if it is taken for a couple of months.

d)    Pomegranates: Seeds of pomegranates (both sweet and sour) have proved effective in treating kidney stones. Pomegranate seeds are grounded into a fine paste and a tablespoon of the paste and can be used with horse gram soup in order to dissolve kidney stones. To prepare a cup of this soup, two tablespoons of horse gram should be used.

Exercise Induced Nausea

Nausea during a strength training workout Many weight lifters experience nausea during exercise. In fact, it’s surprisingly common for weight lifters and other strength training devotees to vomit during a workout. There are several factors which contribute to this sort of workout nausea.

  • Too much food or water in the stomach. Stomach volume is limited, and stomach emptying rates are lower during exercise than at other times. As the old saw says, “Don’t swim (or squat) until an hour after eating.”
  • High or maximum heart rate and uncontrolled breathing. Sustained heavy lifting elevates the heart rate and blood pressure. This brings on a “sick to the stomach” feeling.
  • Bending over during a period of maximum heart rate, especially while inhaling. The esophageal sphincter is a band of muscle that closes off the top of the stomach. It prevents stomach contents from re-entering the esophagus. Unfortunately, it’s notoriously weak and can open due to an overfull stomach, bending over while drawing a heavy breath, or a highly elevated heart rate.

To avoid exercise-induced nausea during intense strength training, remember these tips:

  • Get enough rest between sets so you maintain a manageable heart rate. If your heart rate is at its maximum, exercise induced vomiting may occur. Rest periods of up to five minutes are acceptable after a heavy set of squats or other compound exercises.
  • Don’t bend over to adjust the weights. Instead, adjust weights while they’re on the rack or on a table. Avoid compressing your stomach.
  • Drink the bare minimum amount of water that you feel you need. Try to avoid drinking right before intense sets. If you are properly hydrated before working out, you can keep your drinking to a bare minimum. Emulate a boxer who drinks only enough between rounds to replace the water lost to perspiration and exhalation.
  • Don’t rehydrate with fluids containing dissolved gas. Never use carbonated drinks during a workout. Avoid shaking your water bottle when you drink from it. Sipping from a cup is preferable to using a water bottle; anything that introduces dissolved air into your water will increase the gas in your stomach during exercise.
  • Finally, get in shape for your weight lifting workout. If a single set of squats leaves you gasping for breath, you are not properly prepared.

Nausea after exercise While weight lifters and bodybuilders can experience nausea after exercise, it more commonly affects endurance athletes. If, as a weight lifter, you consistently experience post-workout nausea, remember that dehydration and (ironically) over-hydration or water intoxication can manifest itself as nausea after exercise. Check out some techniques for recovering from intense exercise and be sure to get your post-exercise carbs. For weight lifters, throwing up after exercise is atypical; if you experience extreme nausea after exercise, it is time to reevaluate your workout program, diet, and recovery protocol.

Food Poisoning: Investigating Sysco Beef Patties Recall

Have you or anyone in your family ever been a victim of food poisoning? There is a new case of contaminated meat that may be of interest to you. An Indiana law firm is investigating the recent recall of 16,800 pounds of ground beef patties by Sysco Seattle, Inc. because of possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Specifically, they are investigating to determine if there have been any food borne illness victims from this potentially adulterated meat, and to identify possible parties who may be liable under the theory of strict liability.

This voluntary recall by Sysco here in the United States comes in the wake of a Canadian meat recall that has been going on since mid-February 2012. That is when Canadian officials traced E. coli contamination of over 135 meat products across Canada to an Ontario based processor, New Food Classics. Specifically, investigators found the source to be a particular meat processing plant owned by New Food Classics, located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. New Foods has now reportedly gone into bankruptcy since these recalls have been launched.

Sysco, a Washington state based company, purchased the potentially tainted meat from New Food Classics and sold it all to one customer with restaurants in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Washington. A spokesman for Sysco, Charley Wilson, has refused to identify the restaurant in question, although many members of the public have been outraged by this lack of disclosure. Instead, Wilson has stated, “We know exactly where the meat is.” Further, he stated, “We know the time frames. It’s just a matter of it being tracked down.”

It does not appear from current investigations that any of the meat was sold in grocery stores, but instead all the meat went to these restaurants of the one Sysco customer. However, at this time there are still many unknowns, including whether any of these prime rib beef patties went out to feed customers from the unknown restaurant’s menu, and in addition, how much of the meat has been recovered since announcement of the recall within a USDA press release on March 24, 2012. Starr Austen & Miller, based in Logansport, Indiana, is awaiting further information and answers to these basic questions from local health department and other officials.

The particular strain of E. coli that may have contaminated these ground beef patties can be particularly lethal, known as the O157:H7 variety, which produces the Shiga toxin that creates ulcers in the colon that can bleed and other severe medical problems as the toxin spreads throughout the body. The symptoms of infection with this E. coli strain may include bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and kidney failure, and is especially ravaging on both the young and old. The bacteria can be killed if the beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. The incubation period for E. coli O157:H7, which is the time between ingestion and first symptoms, is typically between 2-8 days, with the average being 3-4 days. Therefore, those people who may have ingested adulterated meat within these unknown restaurants may now just be showing symptoms.

In general, if you feel you may be a victim of food poisoning from this contaminated meat, please seek medical attention immediately. Make sure your physician does appropriate tests, preferably before any antibiotics are administered, to determine what particular food borne pathogen is responsible for your symptoms. Further, have the doctor report such findings to the local health department in your area to see if you’re symptoms are part of a larger outbreak.

If you’ve contracted an E. coli O157:H7 infection, the firm suggests that a good food safety lawyer will use the tests from your doctor, along with other evidence from microbiology and epidemiology to trace the pathogen back to the particular food product or source you consumed. With strict liability for food poisoning cases, you must prove three critical elements: the food was contaminated, causation and damages. By taking these proactive steps when seeking medical attention, along with contacting knowledgeable counsel, it can mean the difference between proving your case and never getting anyone to take responsibility for the damages caused to your health and well-being through no fault of your own.

A Brief Explanation About Duodenal Ulcers

A person gets a duodenal ulcer when the the duodenum in the stomach is affected by the H. pylori bacteria. One of the ways to get treatment is by taking a course approximately 1-2 months in duration that provides you with certain medications or other methods to lower the production of acid in your stomach. An additional week may be necessary during which the patient will take medication along with antibiotics in order to lower acid levels. Doing so will rid of the H. pylori bacteria from the duodenum. This treatment is also issued so that the ulcers do not return.

What Are The Causes?

Knowing about duodenal ulcers and their causes is important. Acid is produced by the stomach to assist with food digestion and bacterial removal. However, this acid can also destroy the stomach lining and the duodenum if an excess amount is produced. Once this lining is damaged, it forms a duodenal ulcer.

Another cause that is much more uncommon is the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Once again, stomach acid is produced in excess but other factors such as alcohol abuse, smoking, and stress contribute toward the development of these ulcers.

Symptoms

The symptoms are often associated with upper abdominal pain and pain under the breastbone. This pain only appears periodically. You may even feel pain before eating or perhaps when you become hungry. One way of getting rid of the pain is to eat, while another is to take antacids.

Vomiting, bloating, and nausea are additional symptoms. In some cases, food consumption leads to pain. What you should also know is that serious complications can arise from a duodenal ulcer such as bleeding ulcers. The duodenum wall can also suffer from perforation, causing severe pain that requires patient to get medical attention immediately.

Treatment

Surgery was often used as a means of treating these ulcers. However, once it was found that H. pylori bacteria was causing this condition most of the time, acid-suppressing medications suddenly have been the preferred treatment.

The number of people getting diagnosed with ulcers is steadily growing. Implementing the right duodenal ulcer diet is one manner of slowing down the condition while also helping the medication you are taking to be more effective. Any beverages or foods that raise the amount of acid in the stomach are to be avoided when planning such a diet.

Gastritis and its Natural Cure

An inflammation of the stomach lining, gastritis is usually signaled by indigestion, either with or without bleeding in the digestive tract. Acute gastritis, often develops when people are subjected to sudden stress, such as from extensive burns or other severe injury or illness; it may also develop after surgery, leading to stress ulcers and severe intestinal bleeding.

Gastritis is not a disease on its own but a symptom of abnormal digestion. It is characterized by inflammation or irritation of the lining of the stomach. It affects millions of people worldwide. It can be divided into 3 categories: (1) erosive and hemorrhagic gastritis (2) non erosive and nonspecific gastritis (3) specific gastritis indicative of a disorder.

The presence of the gastric juices help in digesting the food. If the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach increases in quantity, the condition is known as hyperacidity.

Treatment:

1.    Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) The Indian gooseberry, or amla, is very beneficial in the treatment of several stomach ailments, gastritis included. The other digestive ailments it is used for dyspepsia, burning sensation, anorexia, vomiting and hemorrhage.

2.    Eating a light or soft diet provides a lot of assistance. Cessation of smoking and relaxation therapy can also help. Eating a diet high in fiber may not only cut your risk of developing gastritis and ulcers in half, but fiber-rich foods may also speed the healing of ulcers. Vegetables are particularly protective sources of fiber and seem to reduce the amount of inflammation in the lining of the stomach.

3.    Ginger (Zingiber officinale) The extract of ginger is effective in treating the acid dyspepsia that is associated with gastritis. It is especially useful for people who consume more of a non-vegetarian food.

4.    Should avoid fatty foods, tomato-based products, chocolate, beverages containing caffeine, decaffeinated tea and coffee, peppermint, and alcohol. These foods relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus and make it easier for the stomach contents to back up into the esophagus, causing further irritation.

5.    Although foods are not the cause of gastritis, people with symptoms should avoid spicy or highly acidic foods, which can irritate the stomach lining. They should also avoid fatty foods, tomato-based products, chocolate, beverages containing caffeine, decaffeinated tea and coffee, peppermint, and alcohol. These foods relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus and make it easier for the stomach contents to back up into the esophagus, causing further irritation.

6.    For temporary, mild gastritis, taking an antacid such as Maalox and Tylenol, then eating no solid foods for a day is often enough to solve it. This gives the stomach a chance to rest and recuperate. After a day of liquids only, add mild, bland food such as bananas, rice and toast to your diet. If the gastritis symptoms persist, however, it may be time to see a doctor. Hopefully this article answered the question what is gastritis.

7.    There is a list of other Ayurvedic preparations that are useful in the treatment of gastritis. Some of these are Dhaatri loha, Sukumara ghrita, Sootashekhara rasa, Kaamadudha rasa, Leela Vilas rasa, Chandrakala rasa and Amalapittantaka rasa.

Coronary Artery Anatomy as related to EKG Interpretation

Patients undergoing Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) are at an increased risk of coronary artery occlusion related to clot formation (thrombosis) or plaque rupture, especially in the acute period after procedure. It is imperative that individuals providing care for this patient population are knowledgeable in reading EKG’s and are able to correlate EKG changes with acute coronary artery occlusions and / or spasms.

When a patient presents with chest pain, pressure, tightness, shortness of breath or other related symptoms status post PTCA, a STAT EKG should be ordered. When caring for a patient post PTCA, is important to know which coronary artery was ballooned and/or stented and be able to identify the EKG leads which reflect those coronary arteries.

The best way to learn how the EKG reflects the coronary anatomy is to take a systematic approach.  Think about where the EKG leads are placed on the patient’s chest and visualize the heart within the chest.  This article assumes that the reader already knows how to read an EKG strip and understands what the P, Q, R, S and T represent on the EKG.

The limb leads are I, II and III. Lead I is between the right arm and left arm; Lead II is between the right arm and left leg; Lead III is between the left arm and left leg.

The precordial leads are V1- V6. V1 is the fourth intercostal space to the right of the septum; V2 is the fourth intercostal space to the left of the sternum; V3 is directly between leads V2 and V4; V4 is the fifth intercostal space at midclavicular line; V5 is at the same level as V4 but at the left anterior axillary line; V6 is level with V5 but is at the midaxillary line.

The right coronary artery (RCA) provides oxygen supply to the inferior portion of the heart. Therefore, it is leads II, III, and aVf that reflect this artery.

Next let’s look at the anterior and septal leads. These are V1 , V2, V3 and V4. These leads lay directly over the anterior and anterioseptal area of the heart.  The left anterior descending artery (LAD) lies down the front of the heart, providing the septal and anterior walls with oxygen. Leads V1 and V2 reflect the LAD and septum. The LAD and diagonal branches are reflected in the EKG leads V3 and V4.

The lateral wall is exactly that. The part of the heart that faces the lateral part of the chest wall. This area is reflected in the leads V5 and V6, I and aVL. These leads reflect the circumflex artery.

Myocardial ischemia and injury are reversible (2). This is due to an increase in demand, or a decrease in supply of oxygen (2).  An acute MI will have the following progression: Tall T waves in the first few minutes; ST elevation or T wave inversion in the first hour(s); possibly pathologic Q waves in the hours after onset; Q waves remain and ST and T waves return to normal in the days following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (2).

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) must be 1 mm in the inferior leads and 2 mm in the anterior leads (2).  There MUST always be a presence of ST elevation in 2 or more contiguous leads (2).

By definition, a myocardial injury has ST segment elevation of at least one mm above the baseline (1). Other signs may be: straightening of the ST segment that slopes up to the peak of the T wave without any time spent at baseline; tall, peaked T waves; or symmetric T wave inversion (1).

Myocardial ischemia has a classic pattern of T-wave inversion (1). The ST segment may be depressed 0.5 mm or more below baseline, or the ST segment may remain at baseline longer than 0.12 seconds, or from a sharp angle with the upright T wave (1). The EKG may also present tall, wide-based T waves and inverted U waves.

A myocardial infarction (MI) may present with the development of Q waves on the EKG in the leads reflecting the affected coronary artery (1). Decreased R-wave amplitude, ST segment depression and T-wave inversion are also sometimes noted on the EKG (1).

Ankle Swelling – Home Remedies for Ankle Swelling

Swelling of the lower leg and ankle is a common problem. Determining the cause of ankle swelling is the first step to finding effective treatment. Once the cause of the ankle swelling is determined, effective treatment can be initiated. Painless swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem, particularly in older people. It may affect both legs and may include the calves or even the thighs. Because of the effect of gravity, swelling is particularly noticeable in these locations.

When you severely injure an ankle, that once-quiet joint becomes a hotbed of activity, according to Gary M. Gordon, D.P.M., director of the Running and Walking Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania Sports Medicine Center in Philadelphia. “Nerves, muscles and other tissues become aggravated. Vessels and capillaries tear, leaking blood. More blood rushes to the area to begin the healing process. Fluids accumulate faster than they can be removed, and you have swelling.”

Home Remedies for Ankle Swelling

Lift ankle so that the leg is straight in front of you on the sofa or on a chair. Place an ice pack, or ice in a plastic bag wrapped in a clean dish towel on the raised ankle.

Salt Around the time you expect your period, drastically reduce your salt intake. Sodium increases fluid retention, so don’t use the salt shaker. And if recipes call for salt, try adding more pepper or another spice instead. But, most importantly, cut down on processed foods and fast foods, all of which are overflowing with salt.

Vinegar To soothe tendinitis, sprains, strains, and general foot aches, alternate hot and cold vinegar wraps. First, heat equal amounts of vinegar and water. Soak a towel in the mixture, wring it out, and wrap it around your foot. Leave it wrapped for five minutes. Then mix equal parts vinegar and cold water and follow the same procedure. Repeat this entire sequence three times.

Elevate the injured area to reduce swelling and promote the draining of fluids. Elevation is especially important if the injury is to an arm or leg.

Boil 1-2 glass of water containing half tablespoon molasses (gud) and one tablespoon saunf, and boil it down to half. Drink this natural homemade drink everyday for 2-3 times. This will reduce swelling of feet during pregnancy.

Bend and pump: Swinging your arms while you walk is a good way to loosen up, but the centrifugal force it creates can make blood pool in your hands, causing swelling. “Try bending your arms 90 degrees at the elbows, and use them as pistons,” suggests Dr. Duncan. “Raise them up higher than you normally would and swing with the cadence of your walking gait.” While you’re doing that, keep your hands loosely open.

Ice should be applied to the sprain immediately for 15mins after every 2hours for 2 days, to reduce bleeding, inflammation and pain.

Drink plenty of water: Water moves through your kidneys and bladder, diluting the urine. And since urine has some fluid-retaining salt in it, the more it’s diluted, the easier it is to remove salt and prevent or decrease edema.

Exercise is very important for reducing swelling. Exercise regularly by walking or swimming helps to remove the swelling.
