Hernias at children: inguinal, umbilical, a hernia of a white line of a stomach. Symptoms. Methods of treatment

Hernia is an outwandering bodies from a cavity in norm them borrowed through properly existing or pathologically generated aperture with conservation of an integrity of envelopes, their covering, or availability of conditions for this purpose.
Let’s consider a hernia of a forward belly wall of a stomach. It is the most widespread surgical pathologies at children. An original cause of progress of hernias – defect of progress of a belly wall. However there are some features which we shall consider separately.

Umbilical hernia. For 4-5 day after a birth of the child the umbilical cord disappears. The umbilical ring consists of two parts. The bottom part where pass umbilical arteries and a uric channel, are well reduced and form a dense cicatricial fabric. In the top part there passes a umbilical vein. Its walls thin, have no muscular environment, are badly reduced in the further. Quite often at weak peritoneal band and patent to a umbilical vein the umbilical hernia is formed. Except for it the major factor promoting occurrence of this pathology, frequent increase of intrabelly pressure is. It can be caused, for example, frequent we cry the child.
The aperture in the top part of a umbilical ring can be wide, and not trouble the child. But in case of small defect with firm edges concern of the child probably. As a rule, a umbilical hernia always can be reduced. The restrained umbilical hernia to meet in an adult practice more often. However we quite often should operate children with unreducible hernias (when hernial contents are attached to an internal wall of a leather of a forward belly wall by solderings).

Experience of out-patient supervision of children with the umbilical hernias diagnosed at early age, allows to tell with confidence, that to 5-7 years age often there comes self-healing. Liquidation of a hernia is assisted with strengthening a belly wall. It certainly massage, laying of children on a tummy, gymnastics. Surgical treatment it is begun not earlier than 5 years age. Properly and accurately lead operation, allows to eliminate a hernia with good cosmetic effect. As a rule, relapses does not happen.

Hernia of “a white line” stomach (anteperitoneal adipoma). If to lead a line between omphalus and ensiform shoot of a brest is and there is “a white line” stomach. At a direct muscle of the stomach, shaping given area, is from 3-6 tendinous crosspieces. In seat of intersection of these crosspieces and “a white line” stomach sometimes there are small defects. In them it is often stuck out anteperitoneal fat. If they settle down in immediate proximity from a umbilical ring, them name paraumbilical (periomphalic) hernias. Unfortunately, these hernias are not inclined to spontaneous closing. Treatment only operative, similar to operation at a umbilical hernia.

An inguinal hernia. Very frequent surgical disease at children. As a rule, all hernias at children of early age congenital. What reasons of occurrence of this pathology? It is a lot of opinions in this occasion at children’s surgeons. It and weakness of a forward belly wall and feature of a structure inguinal areas and nonclosure vaginal a shoot abdominal membrane and a heredity. We shall try under the order, on an example of an congenital inguinal at the boy.
About from 6-th month of intra-uterine progress of the boy orchis fall from a belly cavity in marsupium on inguinal to the channel. Therefore these hernias name slanting. For presentation present itself, that on a tube (vaginal to a shoot abdominal membrane) as on the lift, orchis, conducted by the lowering mechanism  from a belly cavity goes down in marsupium. Then under the plan there is a closing a pipe (vaginal shoot abdominal membrane) and by that the termination of the message between belly completely and marsupium. If it does not occur, at increase of intrabelly pressure in the nonclosure vaginal shoot of abdominal membrane leaves contents of a belly cavity. It is an inguinal hernia.
What for to an organism to strain and stretch a stomach when there is an opportunity to dump a superfluous pressure in “hernial contents”. And frequently the child grows and … increases hernial bulge. Treatment of the given pathology only operative. Technically to carry out it at the child easier is more senior 1 year. However quite often operation is shown to the child at once at statement of the diagnosis. To wait dangerously. Occurrence of terrible complication – infringement inguinal hernias is possible. Hernial bulge in inguinal areas earlier that arising disappearing suddenly became firm, the child has begun to worry and has begun to cry, there was a vomiting, refusal of meal. At touch up to firm “bulla” in a groin to the child it is very painfull!!!
Most likely, there was an infringement inguinal hernias. To not give food, not give water and it is urgent to bring the child to the hospital. Muscles of a stomach have restrained contents of a hernial bag. It can be a site of a gut, a bladder or ootheca at girls. If urgently to not help the child after a while the site, deprived blood supplies, can be sphacelous, i.e. become lifeless. In that case treatment very heavy and long. In my practice there were 2 cases, hernial contents at the restrained hernia were a site of a blind gut with again changed an appendicular shoot. It was necessary to lead simultaneously with celotomy.

Believe, it is better to not lead up to infringement. To operate the child with a hernia it is necessary healthy, with good analyses and in the daytime. And it is possible only at scheduled operation. Every year in our branch, about to 500 children with the given pathology, scheduled operative interventions are spent. Operations last about 15-20 minutes, pass under a mask narcosis and the control of skilled anaesthesiologists. And here, after the small period of rehabilitation – your child is completely healthy. We have made all in time and properly.

Spinal Tumor Surgery

Spine surgery to remove or resect (partially remove) a benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) spinal tumor can help reduce or relieve persistent back or neck pain, balance problems, difficulty walking, and bowel and bladder dysfunction.

When and if surgery is performed depends on many things, such as : –

  • Tumor type, including benign or malignant.
  • Tumor size and its location.
  • If the tumor causes spinal cord or nerve compression (if there’s neurologic eficit—aka, nerve problems).
  • If the tumor causes spinal instability, vertebral destruction, or vertebral fracture.

Surgery Goals

The goals of surgery for spinal tumors include : –

  • Remove the spinal tumor, or as much of it as possible
  • Reduce pain and improve function and life
  • Restore spinal stability

Possible Surgical Procedures for Spinal Tumors

Decompression : – Remove the tumor, bone, and other tissues compressing the spinal cord and or spinal nerve roots.

Spinal Stabilization : – Your spine can become unstable after part of the bone or other tissues (e.g., intervertebral discs) are taken out. An unstable spine can move in abnormal ways, putting you more at risk for serious neurological injury.

Combination : – You may need to have both a decompression and spinal stabilization. Decompression and stabilization spine surgeries may be performed as a minimally invasive procedure or by using a more traditional open approach (longer incision, longer recovery time).

Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty : – These are similar minimally invasive surgical procedures performed to stabilize a fractured vertebra. Spinal tumors that invade vertebrae may cause it to break and can cause severe pain.

Radiosurgery (CyberKnife) : – This is a non-invasive procedure using precisely targeted radiation to treat certain spine tumors (1). Radiosurgery can help remove tumors using a high-dose of radiation.

Most patients need some rehabilitation after surgery. Whether you are transferred to a rehab center directly from the hospital or go as an outpatient, rehab should help you get back to your regular activities of daily living. Certain treatments may be prescribed as part of your continued care. If your spinal tumor is malignant, radiation therapy and / or chemotherapy may be recommended.

Microvascular Decompression Surgery In India

Trigeminal Neuralgia

A Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also called tic douloureux, is a condition that is characterized by intermittent, shooting pain in the face…..

Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia

If medication fails to relieve pain or produces intolerable side effects such as excess fatigue, surgical treatment may be recommended. Several neurosurgical procedures are available.

One of the major neurosurgical procedure is  Microvascular decompression (MVD)…….

Microvascular Decompression

Microvascular decompression is referred to as a “non-destructive” surgical procedure because, unlike the other surgical procedures outlined, it does not involve causing an injury or damage to the nerve. The operation is performed under general anesthesia where a small opening is made in the back of the skull on the side with the pain.

The trigeminal nerve is viewed with a microscope and compressing blood vessels are removed and the nerve is padded with a soft pad (typically shredded Teflon). Teflon cotton is placed to prevent the artery from sliding back and pressing against the nerve……

We at We Care Health Services, India have a different approach towards medical tourism as opposed to our counterparts abroad. Our medical tourism process starts with suggesting, brokering and referring the patient to the selected hospital and doctor but does not end there. We have direct first name relationship with all the major doctors and surgeons in our partner hospitals in India. We actually service the patients while they are in India for the surgery / treatment. Our team of Clinical Coordinators and Patient Care Managers meet the patient daily, coordinate clinically and non clinically with the hospital doctors and staff to ensure smooth and trouble less care to the patients and their attendants.

Herniated Disc in Back – Symptoms and Stages

A herniated disc in back appears when the annulus fibrosus or outer fibrous ring of a lumbar intervertebral disc is ripped by several problems prompting the nucleus pulposus or the soft central portion of the disc to bulge out. Even in the absence of nerve root compression, the discharge of inflammatory chemical mediators called tumor-necrosis factor alpha (TNF) can cause intense pain. If left neglected, the disc could herniate and the nucleus pulposus leak out, which could lead to a pinched nerve and also trigger back pain.

Lumbar disc herniations normally occur in the lower back, specifically between the 4th lumbar vertebrae all the way down to the sacrum (L4 to L5 and to S1).

A “Slipped Disc”? Often wrongly called slipped disc, a herniated disc cannot slip since it is affixed and squeezed between two vertebrae. The intervertebral disc, however, could be compressed, stretched and twisted out of its placement in small degrees or stages.

The stages are outlined below:

  • Bulging Disc. Viewed as a contained disc disorder, the disc presents itself as an inflammed mass because of the expansion of its annulus fibrosus.
  • Protruding Disc. Still a contained disc, it protrudes into the spinal canal and squeeze on the nerve producing pain. The disc hasn’t broken open at this stage.
  • Herniated or ruptured disc. By now viewed as a non-contained disc disorder, the nucleus pulposus has spilled out into the spinal canal because of the rip in the disc.

Reports have presented that bulging discs are more typical than herniated discs. However, herniated discs can cause serious discomfort. For some people, pain may not be included even with a bulging or herniated disc in back.

How to Stop a Sore Throat at the First Sign

You are just going through your day minding your own business when you get an odd sensation, a feeling in your throat, a tingle, or a tickle.  You force a swallow down, trying to push it away, willing it to go away, because you just don’t have time to deal with this right now.

After a moment or two, it’s gone, and you let out a sigh of relief—just a false alarm.  Later in the day, that evening, you feel a little run down and notice a raw spot in your throat.  That’s when you know you’ve already come down with a sore throat.  Is there anything you can do to catch that first sign you felt earlier in the day?

The first sign of the sore throat is that tickle or tingle in your throat.  This is your body’s warning signal it has started the battle against the virus (for colds or flu) or bacteria (like strep).  This is the time to take action because the virus or bacteria are still on the surface of the throat tissue.

  • Gargle with warm salt water.  Just dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle.  You can make this solution stronger if desired.  Do this at least once an hour throughout the day.
  • Spray colloidal silver on your throat several times a day.  Do this right after you gargle and let it sit on your throat without drinking for about 10 minutes before drinking any liquids.  Colloidal silver kills out an impending infection.
  • Drink some herbal tea.  Any of the following alone or mixed will help fight off a sore throat:  slippery elm, sage, mullein and peppermint.

If you catch it at the very beginning, many times you can stop a sore throat in its tracks before it takes hold in the throat tissue.

Diabetes Natural Treatment and Swami Ramdev Herbal Products

Diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by the presence of high blood sugar levels. Diabetes occurs both in adults and children and can result in multiple organ failure, if left untreated. On an average, 5% of world population is suffering with the signs of diabetes and several others are at the verge of acquiring the disease. In this regard, it is important to find effective treatment methods that can aid in reversing diabetes and its related symptoms. An interesting option is a symptoms of diabetes natural treatment.

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which blood glucose levels are high or above normal. Two things could happen. Your body cannot produce enough insulin or it cannot use its own insulin for cell energy thus causing sugar to build up in your blood.Recent surveys disclosed that about 17 million Americans are sick with this disease. And the more shocking news is another 5.9 million people in the US do not even know they have it.There are three types of diabetes. These are type 1 or the insulin-dependent, type 2 or the non insulin-dependent and gestational type which only pregnant women get. Another term for Type 1 is juvenile diabetes, because it happens more in children. The cause of this particular type of diabetes is the pancreas’ lack of production of insulin.

Why Diabetes Natural Treatments Work?

The main reason diabetes can be reversed and cured is because your body is composed of trillions of cells. And a typical diabetic’s cells are resistant to insulin. Therefore, they need insulin to keep their blood sugar normal. However, scientists have discovered that your body is capable of making new cells that are not resistant to insulin. Since diabetes is a disease that is predominantly caused by a poor nutrition plan and unhealthy lifestyle, it is possible to reverse diabetes with a better diet, better supplements and exercise.

Peanut Butter for the Diabetic

I am constantly surprised by the number of diabetics who are unaware that simple peanut butter is a great protein source that is beneficial in a diabetics diet.  And once I mention it they usually look at me like I am crazy and say, “but what about fat and cholesterol?”  Remember to eat everything in a reasonable amount.  I am not advocating a half jar of peanut butter per serving.  Most commercial peanut butters contain no trans fat and around 3 grams of saturated fat per a two tablespoon serving.  Two tablespoons is quite a bit of peanut butter.  Following are some easy ways to add peanut butter to your diet to help you control your blood sugar.

  • In a hurry at breakfast?  Spread a tablespoon of peanut butter on a piece of whole grain toast.
  • When eating pancakes, spread with peanut butter instead of butter or margarine.  Top off with sugar-free syrup.
  • Peanut butter, regular Jif Peanut Butter used as this example, has more protein than carbohydrates.  This is important for diabetics.
  • Need a quick snack?  Cut a slice of whole grain bread in half.  Top one of the halves with a tablespoon of peanut butter, add a tablespoon of low-sugar jelly then top with the other half of the bread.  Or you can eat it without the top piece of bread if you prefer.
  • For snacks, lunches or party platters, cut a rib of celery into three or four pieces.  Stuff the inside with some peanut butter.
  • Slice an apple into wedges.  Dip into peanut butter for snacking.  The protein in the peanut butter will help to counteract the natural sugar in the apple.
  • When eating out and tempted by dessert, eat a few bites or small slice of peanut butter pie.  This should be after eating meat or other protein during your meal.  I have done this several times at a local steakhouse and it has never caused my blood sugar to go over 120.
  • At a birthday party and want a piece of cake?  Ask the hostess for a small slice of cake and a tablespoon of peanut butter.  I always do this and it has never increased my blood sugar.

Obesity Effects: How Obesity Is One Of The Most Common Causes Of Fatigue

Fatigue is a condition that is commonly associated with extreme fatigue. If excess weight is present it is always suspected as one of the causes of fatigue. Even ten or twenty pounds of excess weight can have an effect on Insulin Resistance (defined later) which can cause unexplained tiredness.

Obesity Defined

Obesity is typically defined as a person with a BMI (body mass index) over 30, because they are generally about 30 pounds over their ideal body weight for their height. (See note on BMI later on in this article.) An obese person is defined as a person who is “very fat, stout, or corpulent.”

Obesity Effects – The Real Weight of Being Overweight

Fatigue and obesity are now known to be linked to a common abnormality – a condition known as Insulin Resistance.  At a healthy body weight insulin facilities the transport of glucose into your body’s cells where it can then be utilized for energy. Insulin Resistance desensitizes the cells of your body to insulin and impairs this process. As a result, glucose and insulin levels become unbalanced in your blood stream, which can later cause diabetes and other serious health risks.

The unbalance of glucose and insulin levels in your blood stream is one of the obesity effects that can be most life changing to an overweight person, yet it gets less attention than other obesity effects. Diabetes, the later effect of Insulin Resistance, is known as the sleeping killer of Americans because so many people are unaware and undiagnosed with this disease. Additionally, it is said that about 50% of people’s Insulin Resistance is caused by genetics, while 50% is caused by lifestyle factors and choices.

Insulin Resistance, along with excess weight, both are causes of fatigue. Coupled together, the result is a double-whammy of tiredness.

Obesity and Its Relationship to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, the mysterious and often misdiagnosed illness that includes unexplained fatigue that lasts for 6 months or longer, has symptoms that are also often present in an obese person. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms include: Significant impairment in short-term memory or concentration, muscle pain, joint pain without swelling or redness, headaches, unrefreshing sleep and malaise that lasts for more than 24 hours after exertion. Additionally, a person with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also exhibits sore throat and tender lymph nodes.

Severe obesity, as defined by a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 45, rules out Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as a reason for experiencing these symptoms. The reason a severely obese person will not be diagnosed with CFS is because the symptoms of severe obesity is so similar to CFS. Doctors will always treat severe obesity first and if the symptoms of CFS persist, then after severe obesity symptoms are gone then it will be treated next.  (Note: Body mass index values vary considerably among different age groups and populations. No “normal” or “average” range of values can be suggested. The range of 45 BMI or higher was selected because it falls within the range of severe obesity.)

Fighting Fatigue and Fighting the Causes of Fatigue

The best way to fight fatigue, especially when its due to obesity, being overweight or Insulin Resistance, is increased exercise. Increasing your exercise regiment is vital to improving Insulin Resistances and immediately reduces the causes of fatigue.  Generally, Insulin Resistances starts to improve just days after a new exercise routine is begun – even before any significant weight loss occurs.

Next, eliminate causes of fatigue by beginning a sound nutritional plan. Seek nutritional guidance to help you find a healthy way of eating for you – not an extreme diet, but a healthy lifestyle change. You may consult a healthy living coach to help you in both the area of adding exercise to your daily routine and finding a new nutritional plan that works best for you.

Finally, consider supplementing your diet with herbs, vitamins and minerals which are meant to increase your level of energy and balance your body, as well as combat causes of fatigue. Again, a healthy living coach can help you find a balance of these nutrients that will fit your goals.

Being inactive, whether weight gain is present or not, will always make one vulnerable to fatigue.  The rule of thumb is when you don’t feel like being active, that’s the best time to do so.

How I Stopped The No-See-Um Itch!

There were no bugs at Beaver Dam Creek. Another Friday night of fishing had begun and there wasn’t a mosquito in sight as I set up my lawn chair about 3 feet from the river.  The sun was going down and the reflections from the water were scattered splotches of red, green, yellow and gold.

There was only the occasional breeze stirring the slow moving creek and surprisingly I did not even the occasional gnat. Being the southern male that I am and not seeing any evidence of blood sucking flying insects, I made the momentous decision not to use any bug spray until there was a need.  Bad move!

I hadn’t counted on being invaded by zillions of No-See-Ums.  Through the night there was only a hint of something being amiss. Every once in a while I would feel a little minor sting, not bad, but a sting or bite anyway.  When searching for the critter that bit me, there was no hint of the culprit.

The next morning my legs and ankles were covered in a thick rash, leading me to believe I had come in contact with Poison Ivy somewhere in the dark by the water.  After more investigation I determined I had been attacked by at least a billion No-See-Ums.  In this age of trillion dollar deficits, a billion really doesn’t sound like much.  It certainly felt like a billion.

No-See-Ums are tiny little bugs that bite you, leave its larvae on your skin and then leave.  Only the female draws blood, to help the eggs mature.  You may not be able to see them when they attack, but you will see and feel their mark the next day

July and August are the ideal months for these invisible little insects to gather around rivers, streams and lakes.  If the air is still and somewhat humid, they thrive and launch themselves at anything that has exposed skin and blood, usually humans.

If the night is calm, as it was over the weekend, these vicious little bugs can ruin any outdoor activity.  The problem is that for many like me, you don’t even know you’ve been bitten until it’s too late.  By the time I wised up and sprayed myself with bug spray, the damage had been done.

By Saturday afternoon I was in such misery with the billions of bites that I called the doctor.  After he asked me why I had not used bug spray, he told me to go to the pharmacy and get a tube of 1% Hydrocortisone cream and apply it liberally.

After slathering on a handful of the cream to my raspberry colored legs and ankles, I waited expectantly for the itching to go away.  Nothing happened, so I added more of the Hydrocortisone cream.  Still nothing happened, the itching continued.

My wife couldn’t take my pain any longer.  After a particularly long bout of listening to my whining and complaining, she went to a local dollar store and bought a tube of something called Anti-Itch Cream.  It contained a Histamine Blocker and the writing on the box proclaimed that it was a comparable ingredient to Benadryl.  It cost a buck and it worked!

Within minutes the itching was gone and was replaced by “a peace that passeth all understanding.”  The welts, which were like small mosquito bites, haven’t yet completely disappeared but are on their way out.  It seems that the rash lasts for about a week before it completely fades away.

My night at Beaver Dam Creek wasn’t a total loss.  I saw a 30 pound catfish caught by an old man and his granddaughter who was helping him run a trot line.  The fish was a big blue that had been caught on a cricket.  They also had several other catfish that were smaller.

I’m not sure I’ll go back to the river anytime soon.  To quote an old southern philosopher, “I’ve enjoyed about as much of this that I can stand.”

Cold Sores – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

A cold sore is a small blister that is reddish or purple. They are usually on the outer edge of the lip, on just one side. Cold sores can appear one at a time or in little bunches, and they are sometimes filled with fluid. They usually crust over and form a scab before they go away. They last a week or 2 and usually don’t require any special treatment.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms of cold sores may include pain around your mouth and on your lips, a fever, a sore throat, or swollen glands in your neck or other parts of the body. Small children sometimes drool before cold sores appear. After the blisters appear, the cold sores usually break open, leak a clear fluid, and then crust over and disappear after several days to 2 weeks. For some people, cold sores can be very painful

Pain or tingling, called the prodrome, often precedes the blisters by one to two days

Usual duration of seven to 10 days

Cold Sore Causes

The virus that causes cold sores is known as the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV, type I and type II. Cold sores are usually caused by type I. Herpes simplex infections are contagious. The virus is spread from person to person by kissing or other close contact with sores or even from contact with apparently normal skin that is shedding the virus.

When someone gets infected with HSV-1, the virus makes its way through the skin and into a group of nerve cells called a ganglion (pronounced: gang-glee-in). The virus moves in here, takes a long snooze, and every now and then decides to wake up and cause a cold sore. But not everyone who gets the herpes simplex virus develops cold sores.

How can I prevent them?

Preventing recurrences involves avoiding those things known to trigger cold sores. So, make sure you always wear a lip balm containing UV protection and avoid sources of stress.

How are cold sores diagnosed?

A combination of the patient’s medical history and the appearance of the sores will usually be sufficient for a diagnosis. A scrape or a blood sample can be used to confirm it.

Sunburn and Psoriasis

Probably almost every human being has at least once in their life experienced a sun burn.

What starts as a pleasant lying on the beach, working in the garden or staying out in the soothing warm rays of the sun can in a few hours turn into an unpleasant and painful burn of the skin.

The first sensation of sunburn can start anywhere from 30 minutes after the exposure to the UVA and/or UVB rays and up to 6 hours after. The most unpleasant sensations are usually noted in 12 to 24 hours after the exposure.

So what is sunburn? Sunburn is a skin damage that happens due to that at some point our skin cells – melanocytes – ceased to produce enough of the melanin pigment needed to protect the skin from the UVA and/or UVB rays. Just like any skin burn, sunburn manifests as an irritation of the skin and a skin damage of various degrees. It may be a slightly painful reddening of the skin or extremely painful water blisters on the skin.

Other common symptoms of severe sunburn may include dehydration, chills, fever, and nausea.

Sun in moderation is very beneficial for the skin of a human. Sun helps to form Vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D participates in the growth and the regeneration of the cells. Scientists have proven that prolonged deficiency of the Vitamin D can actually cause the development of a skin cancer.

Sun in moderation is a great way for people with psoriasis to temporarily get rid of their psoriatic lesions, due to that the sun rays suppresses the inflammatory activity of the T-cells in people with psoriasis.

We know that prolonged deficiency of the sun can cause skin cancer, but what about an excessive exposure to the sun resulting in sunburn? The thing is that excessive sun causes negative changes to the DNA (carrier of the molecular information), and these changes can also cause a skin cancer.

There are 3 types of the ultraviolet radiation: UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVC radiation of the sun is mostly stopped by the ozone layer of the atmosphere and therefore does not reach us. UVC radiation is also practically not used in the tanning beds, neither regular nor special tanning beds for psoriasis.

UVB rays, similar to the UVB rays of the sun are often used in a special tanning unit for treating psoriasis. With the lack of a natural sun people with psoriasis often use such UVB units.

UVA rays, similar to those in the sun are often used in the regular tanning units. People without psoriasis in the winter months may indulge in visiting such solarium.

In each of these cases – tanning in the sun, tanning on a regular tanning bed or tanning on a special tanning bed for psoriasis – there is a risk of developing sunburn.

Sunburn is even more negative for people with psoriasis due to the so-called Koebner effect – the appearance of the new psoriatic lesions on the spots of the skin trauma.

What to do? Just like with anything, sun tanning has to be done in moderation. Moderate beneficial UV exposure should not turn into a negative excessive exposure.

Wise thing to do is to suntan carefully and for a short period of time, especially in the beginning. Depending on your skin type and color you may be able to suntan for longer or shorter amounts of time.

Yeast Infections of the Skin

Yeast is a fungus and can infect both the skin and the internal organs. When yeast infects the skin, it is known as cutaneous Candidiasis. Candida is opportunistic yeast (it infects the body when it gets a chance). Candida is a normal resident in the mouth and vagina. It is normally held in check by the body but when the chance arises the Candida will readily infect the skin.
Candida can infect the mouth, groin, armpits and vagina.
In the child, Candida is a common infection in the groin; this is common in diaper wearing babies and children.
Candida is most likely to occur in individuals who

– Take antibiotics for an extended period of time. The antibiotics kill the normal resident bacteria which normally hold the Candida in check

– Are obese. Obese individuals have skin fold creases which are moist and are prone to fungi growth. The armpits, breast line, waist and groin are particularly prone to yeast infection in these individuals.

– Fungi love to grow when the sugar content of the body is high.

– Steroids: Individuals who take corticosteroids for long periods can rapidly develop fungi infections. This is commonly seen in individuals who take steroid puffers to treat their asthma. If the mouth is not rinsed after each use of the puffer, the residual steroid encourages the growth of fungi.

What are the symptoms of yeast infections?
Yeast infections may manifest:

– Circular rash with ragged edges

– Pimples or pustules at the edge of the rash

– Itchiness

– Skin may be moist

– The rash is itchy

– There may be a burning sensation

– The vaginal yeast will reveal a milky white discharge

– In the mouth, the yeast will look like milky white patches

How is yeast infections diagnosed?

The diagnosis of a yeast infection is generally obvious but to confirm the diagnosis, the physician may obtain skin scraping and look at them under a microscope.

Post Concussion Syndrome

Post concussion syndrome (PCS) is an often misunderstood disorder which affects survivors of mild to moderate brain injury. It consists of a combination of symptoms which can last for months or even years. PCS can include physical, cognitive, and/or emotional impairment. Its effect on mood and behavior can be frightening and frustrating for victims and their loved ones.

Life with post concussion syndrome

The symptoms of PCS can come and go. Mood swings, irritability, and extreme fatigue are common problems for people with PCS. A very productive day is often followed by a day of exhaustion. The symptoms are unpredictable, and a person who is seems to be fine most of the time, may not be able to function normally on a consistent enough basis to hold down a job.

The symptoms of PCS fall into three categories – physical, cognitive, and emotional. These symptoms can include:

• Headaches

• Ringing ears

• Dizziness

• Nausea and/or vomiting

• Balance problems

• Sleep disorders

• Fatigue

• Exhaustion

• Weakness

• Difficulty with controlled movements

• Vision problems

• Sensitivity to light

• Hearing problems

• Sensitivity to noise

• Decrease or change in sense of taste

• Decrease or change in sense of smell

• Loss of libido and/or sexual dysfunction

• Difficulty concentrating

• Memory problems

• Amnesia

• Foggy thinking

• Confusion

• Periods of mental dullness

• Impaired attention

• Personality changes

• Extreme mood swings

• Unexplained anger

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Restlessness

• Frustration

• Irritability

• Loss of self-confidence

• Low self-esteem

Misdiagnosis of PCS is very common, but thankfully, awareness of the disorder is increasing. The medical community has known about PCS since the 1800’s, but its origins have been a matter of controversy.

Unfortunately, many people with PCS are misdiagnosed as and inappropriately medicated. Not only does this prevent them from getting the proper treatment and rehabilitation, but the medications often have side effects which make the symptoms even worse. Common misdiagnoses include:

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Other terms for PCS

PCS is sometimes called:

• Traumatic dephalgia

• Chronic brain syndrome

• Traumatic head syndrome

• Post concussive syndrome

• Post traumatic syndrome

• Post brain injury syndrome

Getting help

If you suspect that you may have PCS, you should talk to your doctor. Many doctors are still skeptical about the disorder. If your doctor does not take your symptoms seriously, considering finding another doctor. Brain injury survivors need the care of brain injury specialists. Even if you were told that your brain injury was “mild” you may need to work with a team of specialist to get the care that you need to fully recover. Mild is a misleading term when it comes to brain injury. It refers only to the initial trauma, not to the long term consequences.
