Natural Remedies For Depression – Looking For Alternative Ways To Battle The Problem

Depression is not the kind of illness that anyone would want to have. Aside from being difficult to diagnose, it does not only involve physical but also includes psychological factors as well. A person may easily relieve his feelings of depression by taking antidepressant medication. But these antidepressant drugs, as with many other drugs, have their side effects, which makes natural remedies for depression better.

The side effects include headaches, stomach pains, vomiting and other physical manifestations of the body’s reaction to the drug. Other than this, there are physiological side effects that include mild forms of mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive and manic disorders.

Looking For New Ways to Battle Depression

It seems that taking antidepressant drugs tends to give the patient more harm than good, although depression is indeed treated in the long run. This is the primary reason why people turn to natural remedies for depression before actually taking antidepressant drugs such as SSRIs as a last resort; they are not willing to bear the side effects.

Other medications for depression have been released with more manageable side effects. In this case, these drugs have been included as part of treatment for depression. Clinically, it has been proven that antidepressant drugs provide less than half of the treatment and can be used only to support the actual vehicle for treatment, for instance, talk therapies.

Innovative Means of Treating Depression

There are many ways to treat mild mental disorders that include the use of therapy sessions. Therapy sessions or so-called talk therapies provide a way for patients to release pent-up anger or sadness, which is the main cause of their long-lasting depression as well as other similar mental disorders. These therapy sessions will either be group or solo sessions with a professional doctor. Either way, the sessions are designed to help people recover from stress and other traumatic events they have experienced in their lifetime. Talk therapies are considered natural remedies for depression.

Since the popularity of the Internet, it has changed the ways that talk therapies are held. There are now talk therapies called depression chat rooms where patients can log online. These patients have an option for privacy, especially those who are famous celebrities.

Depression chat rooms are usually formed privately. Meaning, it is administered by professional doctors to specifically address the privacy issues that a patient may have with talk therapies. The chat rooms are overseen by a medical doctor or a professional counselor and similar to group or solo therapies, sessions will be held for about an hour. Despite being online, the sessions are still conducted in a controlled environment until such time that the session members are able to handle their own in the outside world.

Aside from these talk therapies, doctors advised that there is no better form of therapy than conversations of the patient with a loved one or a close family relative. This is a true example of natural remedies for depression. Because of this, a depressed patient is not confined within the clinic but is actually supported to be active in family gatherings and to engage in lively and fun activities with the family. With the full support of the family and relatives, the patient may not even need to engage in formal therapy sessions.

Activities That Eliminate Depression

Aside from therapies, doctors advise patients to engage in activities that they may find fulfilling or something that gives them a sense of accomplishment. Such activities may include easy-to-do hobbies, sports activities or a simple visit to nature. All these activities will relieve depressed people of stress and will improve their over-all mental state.

Studies have revealed that exercise has many great benefits that include the treatment of depression. A daily sport or exercise regimen will be good for depressed people. A good sweat does not only mean a good workout but also a good way to release pent-up energies.

Usually, as part of the program, members of a particular therapy session will have a field trip to nature. A simple visit at garden or even a park will do many things to uplift the spirits of those who are depressed. A sunset or sunrise, or even a look out on the sea is very calming and relaxing to those who are stressed-out and depressed.

Whatever the activity may be, it is important to have one that can release pent-up emotions and induce relaxation to the patient. Nowhere else can one find these characteristics but from natural remedies for depression.

Phobias' Mystery Revealed – The Fear Factor

Phobias are provoked by traumas and by mistakes of the human conscience, which is undeveloped and functions based on one psychological function that is completely developed and another one partially developed, whereas the other 2 functions remain in an atrophic condition.

People make many mistakes because they follow their one-sided human conscience, which obliges the organism to defend itself by causing phobias. While all psychological disorders and diseases are provoked by the anti-conscience, phobias are provoked by the wise unconscious to protect and cure the absurd selfish and one-sided human conscience.

Thus, phobias reflect the mistakes that a person is making. For example, if someone suffers from agoraphobia (fear of closed and crowded places), it is because he or she is staying in closed places for too long or being occupied in activities that are too concentrated only on one aspect, like one of the first patients I treated in 1990.

When someone suffers from thalassophobia (fear of the sea or ocean) he or she is afraid of the craziness in the wild side of their conscience. You can find more information about the meaning of the sea in dreams (and in reality that can be interpreted in the same way) in my article, "Dream Symbols-The Sea and Craziness."

I cured a girl who was afraid of the sea. She had too much hate accumulated in her psyche and was afraid of a nervous explosion or crisis; This is why she was afraid to even walk near the sea.

She was completely cured through dream interpretation, since she discovered what was causing her problems and what she had to do in order to be cured. In fact, dream interpretation is the only method through which we can easily understand which mistakes cause phobias and how they can be corrected.

In 1991, when I visited my father in Brazil after a long time, I observed he suffered from hierophobia (fear of sacred things and practices). We approached a church and I mentioned that he should talk with the pries and ask him if he could stay in the Catholic community and be treated by a nun, since he was becoming too old to live alone and his house was in a horrible state. His indifference to the mess and filth in the house was a confirmation of the degree of his craziness.

He is schizophrenic since I was born. However, he was always very kind with me because I inherited his facial characteristics and I was a quiet and intelligent child. He was a monster or a hypocrite actor to everyone else, depending on the situation.

I had to abandon the idea of entering in the church with him because he had a nervous attack as soon as we parked the car near the church. He started shouting and telling me that he did not need to confess anything, that he already had confessed to the priest of the church near his house, who was his confession. He refused to get out the car and he looked so terrified that I understood that I should not insure.

I noticed he had removed a small statue of Saint Mary that once was at the front part of his house when I first came, but I did not ask him why it was not there anymore. He refused to even look at the church and he became very irritated with me because I had the idea of going there. This fear can easily be justified by his sins …

The girl who was afraid of the sea was also afraid of the lift. She never entered a lift, no matter how many stairs she had to walk up. This is a phobia that does not have a name because it is a phobia that started appearing only after invention of lifts, while the list of the existing phobias is considered old. (Click here if you want to see a list with all the known phobias: The Indexed Phobias List)

The explanation for this fear is the same as fear of the sea. She had far too much hatred accumulated in her anti-conscience, which is represented by the sea in dreams and also represented by what exists underground. The girl was afraid to suddenly go underground (which could happen in the lift) because she would suddenly have to face all the hathered accumulated there.

All phobias have Greek names, so if someone speaks Greek like me, it is very easy to understand each phobia's meaning by its name.

However, the most important language one should know in order to be able to cure someone with phobias is the symbolic language of the unconscious by which we receive wise messages in our dreams.

Do You Prefer Stress, Anxiety, Fear, Panic or Peace of Mind

Do you live in a state of constant stress, anxiety, fear and panic, or do you enjoy peace of mind?

Do you let external influences affect your moods and state of mind, or do possess inner strength and detachment?

Are you obsessed by fearful thoughts and worries, or do you have control over your thoughts?

Too many people are anxious, stressed, worried too much, subject to moods and have no control over their thoughts and feelings. This situation leads to emotional, mental and physical problems, unhappiness and failure.

Inner peace, which is peace of mind, is not the sole possession of yogis and hermits. You too can enjoy it without becoming a yogi or a hermit.

There is an erroneous concept relevant, which says that peace of mind is thought and can be attained only by people who lead a completely spiritual life in ashrams or monasteries. Some even think that real peace of mind is an illusion and can not be attained. These are erroneous assumptions. Some might attain a higher level of peace and others a lower level, yet everyone can gain at least some measure of inner peace. Such peace will certainly improve the quality of life, health, relationships and everything else.

There are various treatments for stress, anxiety, fears and panic attacks. Some involve psychological help, some use hypnosis and others involve the use of medicines. All these treatments involve external help. There is another way to handle these problems, which does not involve external help. It is through personal, inner work and training.

A mental training program for peace of mind starts from really simple actions, which you can incorporated in your daily life. They include a change of attitude, being more positive, developing of inner detachment, developing some control over the thinking process and later, also some special mediations aimed toward increasing the level of inner peace.

Stress, anxieties, worries, fear and panic start in the mind. They start as thoughts, which grow in strength and affect your behavior, actions and habits. Your thoughts and attitudes act like a filter, a screen or lenses, through which you see the world in a particular way, which does not always depicts reality. Your aim is to be more aware of them, and use certain techniques to stop their power over you. There is no reason to go on through life being at the mercy of uncontrolled thoughts, feelings, anxieties, worries and fears.

You can transform your life! You can change the state of your mind! Even a small amount of inner peace would do a great deal to you. Are you afraid of some effort? Can not you spare just a few minutes for making your mind and life a little calmer, with less fear and worries?

'Peace of Mind in Daily Life' is a book that goes into detail about this most important subject. It teaches in simple and easy to follow progressive steps how to attain this coveted state of inner peace, right here where you are, without the necessity of making any outer changes in your life. True peace starts from the inside, and is independent of external conditions.

Here are a few tips to help you start:

– I am a center of peace, calmness and happiness.

Maintain Your Health by Drinking Water

One of nature’s best medicines is available in almost every household on the planet, and that medicine is simply pure water. In case you are not aware of the role of water in preventing and curing illness, then read on and you will get some valuable tips that you can use in your daily life.

The first thing to remember is that water is essential for good health and that you should drink water whenever you feel thirsty. In fact it is better not to even wait till you are thirsty, because being thirsty is an indication that you are already dehydrated.

Your body’s muscles, skin and organs consist of over 70% water and if the total content of their water goes under 70% you are likely to become ill. If your food and drinking do not provide enough fluids to compensate for the water lost through excretion, then your stored water will be lost and your body may become thinner and drier. The loss of water is not only bad for your outer appearance but it also adversely affects the internal workings of your body.

Adequate water drinking is especially important in hot countries (though almost as important in cold countries). Most people in hot countries have kidney and liver troubles because they do not drink enough water. So, how much water should you drink per day? On average, a healthy person should drink 3 to 4 liters water daily, a sick person 4 to 5 liters daily, and a person suffering from skin disease 5 to 6 liters daily.

You can drink four liters of water per day with very little effort. In order to drink that much daily, one may, for example, drink 1.5 liters in the early morning, another 1 liter between breakfast and lunch, another 1 liter between lunch and dinner, and ½ liter after dinner before sleeping time. If one can only drink 1 liter in the early morning due to short schedule, then water drinking should be at least 1 ¼ liters in between meals.

Avoid drinking water 30 minutes before meals until 1 hour after meals, as such meal-time water tends to dilute digestive juices. On the other hand soupy high-liquid content foods are very good during meals, as they are easy to digest.

In case you are wondering about the best temperature for the water, then here are some guidelines:

a) For people in normal health, the ideal temperature for drinking water is from cool to slightly warm. Cool water is a tonic for the stomach. Some people much prefer hot water, which is not harmful if it is occasional. It is not advisable to drink ice water often.

b) In case of excessive fever and sweating, drink a little cool water very frequently.

c) In case of cold stage of fever during malaria, together with cold shivers, drink hot water. Also in case of pain in the abdomen, drink hot water.

d) In case of vomiting tendency, stop by drinking small quantities of very hot water. Alternatively, it’s also possible to suck on ice to help stop vomiting tendency.

If one drinks warm water, the vomiting tendency will increase.

Drinking water on a daily basis will help you to maintain your health and prevent harmful diseases. Should you happen to fall ill then water drinking can also be a key element in bringing about a recovery. In future articles I will focus on the role of water in curing common illnesses.

Welcome to the World of Sidings – What is Stucco?

Within the world of siding, stucco is considered as one of the most elegant, stylish materials available on the market. Traditional stucco siding is made by combining Portland cement, sand, lime, and water. This mixture is then applied, sometimes in multiple coats, for a household exterior that is both durable and eye-catching.

Many consumers do not realize that there are actually two types of stucco currently in use. The first is what people might refer to as the "real" stucco, since it's the same type that's been around for years. "Real" stucco, also known as cement stucco, is a solid material that gets directly applied to the surface of a home for an almost rock-like covering. By contrast, the new, synthetic form of stucco is much more hollow than its cement counterpart. Synthetic stucco consists of foam board materials that are applied to the surface of the home and then given a classic stucco finish. While the two types of stucco are quite similar in appearance, synthetic stucco offers the added benefit of superb insulation.

Of course, as is the case with all siding materials, stucco comes with its own specific set of pros and cons.

First, the advantages:

Stucco is resilient and long-lasting

When it comes to siding materials, stucco is certainly one of the most durable. Stucco is heat and fire resistant, which makes it not only strong, but safe. Additionally, stucco usually comes with a weather-resistant finish that minimizes cracks and helps it withstand the test of time.

Stucco means easy maintenance

Unlike other siding materials such as wood, stucco is reliably easy to maintain. When it comes to classic stucco, the occasional power wash is usually enough to do the trick.

Stucco paints an elegant picture

There's just something about the look of stucco that people really seem to like. Of the various siding materials available, stucco is the one surface that can truly play a role in a home's distinctiveness. For starters, stucco comes in an array of colors. Even better, stucco can be customized with original etchings and designs for a look that is unquestionably unique to a particular home. In fact, when it comes to extreme originality, stucco is one of the most cost effective ways of adding custom trim and design to the exterior of one's home.

Hooray for insulation

Synthetic stucco provides an added element of insulation to the home that can save the average homeowner a fair amount of money on heating and cooling costs in the long run. In fact, stucco provides even better insulation than foam-backed vinyl insulation, making it the number one choice for energy efficiency.

Of course, stucco does come with a few disadvantages.

Stucco is expensive

In the grand scheme of siding materials, siding can certainly cost a pretty penny. Those with limited home improvement budgets might find that stucco is, unfortunately, out of reach.

A longer installation process

Stucco is one of the more difficult materials to install, and as a result, stucco installation tend to take longer than the average vinyl or wood siding installation. Homeowners who wish to have stucco siding installed should prepare themselves for a few extra days of construction.

And a few quick specifics

Cement stucco is extremely rigid. So if the foundation of the home on which it is installed begins to shift, then the stucco is likely to crack. Synthetic stucco is less rigid but has been known to trap moisture, causing walls to become rotted and degraded. In addition, synthetic stucco has been blamed for mold problems occurring in homes with moisture damage. The good news is that installation techniques have improved to reduce the chances of these types of problems. Additionally, modern-day synthetic stucco is now fitted with a grooved foam backing that allows moisture to properly drain out.

The bottom line

Stucco provides the perfect combination of durability and aesthetic appeal. While it does have its
drawbacks, stucco can instantly work to increase the value of one's home. If your budget allows for it, then treat yourself to the timeless elegance and curse that that has become conspicuous with stucco.

So what causes vaginal fungus? Candida albicans is an organism that harmlessly lives in a person's mouth, vagina or intestinal track. Infections occur when these organisms have an overgrowth due to certain conditions of the body. These conditions can be generally described as an imbalance of the population between bacteria and fungi and also a decrease in function of the immune system.

Overgrowth is the most of the time the outcome of antibiotic treatment, wearing clothing that promotes moisture and heat in the vaginal area. People with conditions such as obesity, pregnancy and PMS, multiple sclerosis and diabetes are of high risk to infection.

Make sure that you wipe front to back.

Preventing the infection is usually easy but requires patience and determination. Keeping in mind the relief that you will achieve is a great motivator to follow these advices in preventing vaginal fungus.

The Three Grades of Sprains

As you know if you have ever sprained a hand or foot, not all sprains are equal. Sprains are generally classified into three grades – or degrees – depending on severity. The three grades of sprains range from a first grade sprain (the least severe) to the third grade sprain (most sever).

The grade or degree of sprain suggests how severely torn the ligaments are due of injury. Ligaments are the strong, flexible fibers that adhere bones together inside a joint. They are often wrongly identified as tendons, which are the elastic tissue holding muscle with bone. A sprain, by definition, is an injury to one or more ligaments.

Varying Treatments
Each of the three grades of sprains has unique needs for treatment. Soft tissue damage like a sprain could be misleading, though, so for all sprains, it's recommended to seek medical help. This is even true for a comparatively small sprain. The RICE method of caring for the sprain is normally deemed the most efficient immediate and longer-term treatment. RICE is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, each part of which is an integral part of addressing any grade of sprain. The purpose of RICE is mainly to stop inflammation, therefore preventing the soreness as well as facilitating recovery.

Grade 1 Sprain
The first degree of sprain seriousness is grade one. In these sprains, the ligament has been stretched despite not terribly injured. While potentially unpleasant, these types of sprains are not likely to bring about long-term problems. Between RICE and a prolonged rest, it does not take a grade one sprain a long time to mend.

First degree sprains are extremely widespread. Anytime a joint extends an excess amount, it's given to be painful. A rolled foot that makes you limp for a few days may be an example. Jammed fingers – the kind which are challenging to flex for a few days – may be sprains.

Grade 2 Sprain
Second degree sprains are the not-so-happy medium of sprains. Second degree sprains usually recover entirely. Being worse, however, they're more painful and take longer to mend. In a grade two sprain, the suspensory ligaments are extended to the point of ripping, but only partially.

It's always hard to determine precisely how long a grade two sprain requires to recover. As a general rule, however, it typically takes two to four weeks to recover. Sprains weakens the ligaments, though, therefore it is advisable to hold back until the joint fully recuperates before returning to routine activities. The RICE method will take care of the injury in the days after being injured, after which physiotherapy can take over.

Grade 3 Sprain
This category of sprain is the result of more substantial injury. This degree of sprain signifies a sizable rip or a total rupture of one or more ligaments. Completely losing the use of the damaged joint is normal for this injury, and the pain can be too much to handle. Thankfully for the typical person, these injuries are a great deal more widespread among professional athletes involved in contact sports. Athletes suffering from this injury can lose time of playing time while getting better.

It's often essential to have grade three sprains repaired in an operation. These sprains will almost always need a few months to recover, however, despite expert care. Prevention is better than cure with these sprains, though, as they can be a persistent problem for quite a while.

Chronic Ankle Sprains In The Professional And Amateur Athlete

Problems with your ankle after a sprain? It may have never healed properly.

It is estimated that 40% of all people who suffer an ankle sprain will suffer chronic pain and weakness in that ankle long-term. The reason? Your ankle never healed properly. Here is why: Our ankles are held together by ligaments and tendons, strong bands of connective tissue. Ligaments hold the ankle bones together while tendons attach the muscles to the bones.

When ankle sprains occur, the ligaments of the ankle are stretched and torn. Most commonly, ankle sprains occur when the athlete lands unevenly from a leap or jump, or has someone fall on their ankle during contact sports. Sprains can also occur when stepping into a hole or divot on a playing field or golf course. The severest of ankle sprains are the extreme or violent twist or “roll-over” of the ankle causing a hyper-extended turning in or turning out of the foot. The turning out injury causes a sprain of the anterior talofibular ligament, and this is the most commonly injured part of the ankle.

When ankle sprain is suspected, the severity of the injury is then graded by a medical professional and a treatment suggested.

Grading the sprain

Grade 1 sprain:

A grade 1 sprain is the least severe of ankle sprains. The ligaments are slightly stretched with a minimum of tearing to the ligament fibers. More of a discomfort than pain is felt as the athlete can usually “walk it off.”

Grade 2 sprain:

There is stretching of the ligaments and partial tearing causing an unstable or loose joint. The condition is also referred to as ligament laxity as the ligament, now stretched beyond its normal range has become weakened or lax, as an overstretched rubber band. There is noticeable swelling and tenderness and depending on extent of injury, instability when walking.

Grade 3 sprain:

A complete tear of the ligament causing extreme instability, swelling, and pain

Grading the treatment:

Grade 3 sprains are not the most common forms of ankle sprains and surgery may be prescribed, but this is rare since the ligament usually scars over during healing.

Is it the treatment at fault?

The “gold” standard of treatment in Grade 1 and Grade 2 sprains is RICE. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Recently however this therapy has been debated by some physicians because of the high incidence of chronic or recurrent ankle sprains.

Among the theories put forth questioning the RICE treatment is that it does not fully allow the ligaments to heal because it reduces and impedes inflammation that is needed to stimulate new tissue regeneration.

Creating inflammation to heal the ankle sprain

Basic medicine tells us that the body’s natural healing response is inflammation. Inflammation is the trigger for the immune system to begin the cascade of events in injury repair. When ligaments do not heal completely, they weaken and put the athlete at risk for chronic ankle sprain.

Preventing with Prolotherapy

When there is not enough inflammation to heal a ligament injury, some physicians have turned back to a new “old-fashioned,” treatment to jump start the healing processes. Prolotherapy was first introduced in the 1950’s as a means to cure chronic pain by strengthening the ligaments of weakened, loose joints by creating inflammation – not suppressing it.

Prolotherapy works by introducing a mild irritant through injection to the exact spot of the ligament damage. This irritant is usually something as benign as simple dextrose. What the dextrose does is create a small, controlled inflammation at the spot of injury accelerating healing and returning strength and resiliency to the ligament and stability to the ankle. In remittent cases, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is used as a stronger proliferant.

Prolotherapy is gaining adherents among athletes because it is minimally invasive, does not require long periods of inactivity and in fact, a Prolotherapy doctor will usually recommend supervised activity or a recommend training plan to get the athlete back on the field as fast as possible.

One to six treatments is typical for the competitive athlete, spaced at weekly intervals.

Gastroscopy – Indications For Gastroscopy and What to Expect

Gastroscopy is performed by inserting a narrow, flexible, telescopic camera (a gastroscope) down the oesophagus, and into the stomach and initial part of the small intestine (the duodenum). The name Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy, or OGD for short.

OGDs are performed in patients to check for conditions such as:

  • Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Barrett's oesophagus
  • Gastric cancer
  • Celiac disease

Who should get a gastroscopy?

Common indications for an OGD include:

  • Diagnosis: persistent gastric pains, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained anemia, ulcers (gastric and duodenal), Barrett's oesophagus.
  • Biopsy: eg. Following an abnormal barium meal or barium swallow exam.
  • Therapeutic: removal of ingested foreign bodies, tamponade of bleeding oesophageal varices, feeding tube placement, injection / banding to stop bleeding

Preparing for the gastroscopy

You will need to ensure that your stomach is empty before the procedure. Typically, you will be asked to fast for at least 6-8 hours prioring the gastroscope. Medication that you usually take, such as those for hypertension, should be continued. Always check with your doctor should you have any doubts.

Dentures, glasses and contact lenses, if any, will have to be removed. You will usually be given some form of sedation to make you more comfortable.

The Procedure

You will be made to lie to your side with your head bent slightly forward. An anaesthetic will be sprayed to numb the back of your throat, thus reducing your urge to gag. Your doctor will place a mouth guard over your teeth (to prevent you from biting the scope) before putting the well lubricated gastroscope into your mouth. As the scope is guided gently down your oesophagus and into your stomach, you will be asked to swallow. Try to relax and follow your doctor's instructions. A nurse will generally be on hand to suck the excess saliva from your mouth.

Once the gastroscope has reached your stomach, some air will be pumped in to expand your stomach. You may experience slight fullness in your stomach at this stage. Your doctor will then proceed to examine the linings of your stomach and duodenum in sections to ensure that all surfaces have been examined. There should be a need for a biopsy to be taken, this can be done by passing a small instrument down a side port of the gastroscope. Tissue samples may be sent to the laboratory for testing to determine the nature of the tissue (ie if benign or malignant). Sometimes, testing for H. pylori infections are also done.

Once the examination is completed, the gastroscope is removed.

The whole procedure usually lasts between 10 to 20 minutes.

Following the Procedure

You will generally be made to rest in the recovery area of the clinic until the sedation wears out. If any of the following occurs within 48 hours of the procedure, you should consult your doctor immediately:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting of blood
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Worsening abdominal pain
  • Allergic reactions such as eye swelling, wheezing or rashes which may occur with medications prescribed for the gastroscopy

Yeast and Bacteria Have a Major Role in the War in Your Leaky Gut

The healthy human gastrointestinal tract is resident to millions of live microbes that aid in digestion. They also produce various nutrients including vitamins and fatty acids. Short chain fatty acids produced by bacteria in the gut are needed for healthy intestinal lining cells and to prevent leaky gut. Natural antibiotics produced by gut bacteria keep the gut flora in balance. Altered levels can result in illness and disease susceptibility. Probiotics are live microorganisms (bacteria and yeast) that have beneficial health effects. They do this through restoring the balance and providing several beneficial effects. Probiotics can help maintain the gut epithelial lining cells (enterocytes in the small bowel) protective barrier function or prevent leaky gut. This results overexposure of the immune system to foreign substances in the food we eat and protein products of bacteria and yeast.

Indigenous flora, gut microflora, intestinal microbiota, resident bacteria, and gut flora are all terms for the collection of live microbes present in the gut. When the normal balance is disrupted this state of altered flora is called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis that results in overgrowth of potentially harmful bacteria in the small bowel is also called small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SBO). SBO is commonly associated with poor digestion and absorption resulting in excess bloating, gas and diarrhea.

Dysbiosis results in numerous adverse health effects. The most dangerous is increased gut permeability or leaky gut. There are numerous causes for altered gut flora. Overexposure to anti-microbial antibiotics and anti-fungal medicines in our food and prescribed for various illnesses is a significant risk. The progress of good hygiene measures such as water treatment (chlorination, filtration) is blamed in part. This has been termed the "hygiene theory" that is proposed as a cause for the rise of inflammatory bowel and autoimmune disease in developed countries. The lack of exposure to soil in childhood is also blamed. Excess ingestion of highly processed foods containing carbohydrates and sugar levels feeding growth of bad bacteria. Also our culture has significantly abandoned the centuries old tradition of eating fermented foods containing live bacteria.

In contrast to the good microbes that normally escape in our guts, pathogenic ones are those that can cause disease or illness when they are not held in check. They can do this through direct toxic effects on the gut, through the production of toxins that cause illness, or by migrating through the bowel wall and entering the blood stream to travel to remote parts of the body.

Certain strains of pathogenic bacteria have the ability to migrate through the bowel wall by a process called translocation. This translocation of microbes or their breakdown products is often to brake for activation of the immune system. This results in gut inflammation that further impairs the protective barrier function resulting in a vicious cycle of leaky gut. If microorganisms get past the gut defensive barrier intact they may reach the blood stream. Once in the blood these foreigners can initiate infection or infection through the body. The distant sites can be affected include the brain, heart, joints, and skin.

Numerous studies now explain how probiotics have positive health effects. They prinicipally act by restoring the balance of microbes in the gut to produce these benefits. Probiotics should have considered in anyone concerned about leaky gut or who believes they have altered microbes levels in their system from antibiotic exposure.

Hepatitis – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver resulting in damage and destruction of the liver cells. Hepatitis can be either acute or chronic. Acute hepatitis is usually caused by viral infection, drug overdose or reaction, and exposure to chemicals. Hepatitis which persists longer than six months is termed as chronic hepatitis.

Acute hepatitis usually results in jaundice, which is a yellowish pigmentation of the eyes, urine, and later, the nails and skin. This is called as "Kamla" in Ayurveda, and is divided into two types: "Bahupitta Kamla" and "Ruddhapath Kamla". The first type is caused by excessive breakdown of the red blood cells (eg malaria), whereas the second type is caused by obstruction of bile flow due to swelling in the liver cells or due to some actual construction in the bile duct. The main similar difference in the two is that feces (stools) are normal colored in the first type, and pale or whitish in the second type. Treatment for both types of "Kamla" is radically different.

Ayurvedic drugs are very effective in both acute and chronic hepatitis. Ayurvedic formulas which are well known for the treatment of liver disorders are: Arogya Vardhini, Kumaryasava, Rohitakarishta, Praval Panchamrut, Kamdudha, Chandanadi Vati, Chandrakala Rasa, Shankh Bhasma and Sutshekhar Rasa. Herbal medicines useful in hepatitis are: Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Yashtimashuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Triphala (Three fruits), Kakmachi (Solanum nigrum) and Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea).

Most of these drugs act directly on the liver cells, reduce inflammation and swelling, and normalize cell function. Some of these drugs have strong anti-viral activity. Some medicines boost the immune mechanism of the body. These medicines help in bile secretion and improve appetite. Because of these properties, the above mentioned medicines are effective in all types of hepatitis. These medicines can also be given to reduce or eliminate the toxic effects of essential drugs like anti-tuberculosis and anti-cancer drugs.

For chronic hepatitis, in addition to the above mentioned medicines, some special formulas are used such as Suvarna Sutshekhar Rasa, Suvarna Malini Vasant and Tamra Basma. Fermented herbal formulas called "Asavas" and "Arishtas" are used.

Liver Disease Symptoms

Liver disease may not show any symptoms at first, as symptoms can be vague. This includes weakness and loss of energy.

Other symptoms include jaundice that is a disease of the gall bladder. Jaundice is one of the main symptoms of liver disease. Jaundice can turn the skin color to yellow. Another symptom is related to digestion and appetite. Poor appetite is a very common symptom. It leads to loss of weight and anemia. Along with this vomiting, nausea or diarrhea can also manifest.

Another important symptom is light colored stool. Due to the lack of bile production, the stool will appear light and can be gray colored or pale.

Distention and bloating can be considered as another symptoms to watch out for and can cause a pain during breathing.

Polyuria or excess urination and polydypsia or excess thirst are the other symptoms typical of the liver disease.

Liver cancer has symptoms that include weight loss and loss of appetite. Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, enlarged liver, change of color (yellowing) of the skin and the whites of the eyes are also noticed. Bile duct obstruction has symptoms like pale stools, dark urine, abdominal pain, jaundice, vomiting, nausea and fever.

Portal hypertension that is a high blood pressure in the portal veins has no symptoms. But complications due to this disease can result in bloody vomiting and black, loose stools from varices, ascites; and signs of brain disease called encephalopathy.

Alcoholic liver disease has symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, swollen abdominal, jaundice, abdominal pain, ascites, weight gain, mental confusion, excessive thirst, dry mouth and fatigue. Additional symptoms include vomiting blood or black, paleness, light-headedness or false, fluctuating mood and altered level of consciousness.

Foods to Avoid When You Have Kidney Stones

Like it or not, kidney stones are a growing concern among medical experts today. Our diets and poor habits are the most likely thing to blame but the good news is that there are certain foods that you can avoid if you are at risk for developing kidney stones.

Who is at risk?

White men over the age of 30 seem to be the highest at risk of having kidney stones and this is all the way across the board UNLESS you live in the southeastern part of the US. The amount of kidney stone cases is so large in this region that doctors have nicknamed the section, the "stone belt".

Food to avoid when you have kidney stones

Kidney stones come mainly in 4 varieties- calcium, struvite, cystine and finally uric acid. That said, nearly 80% of the kidney stones are compressed of calcium deposits, most notably the oxalate type.

Because of this, you should eliminate foods from your diet that is high in oxalic acid. Some of the foods that have high amounts of this oxalic acid include spinach, tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash, peanuts, almonds, sweet potatoes and cocoa.

Animal fat is also known to increase the risk of getting a kidney stone because it causes your body to actually release calcium which in turn will build up in your kidneys

This sounds like a no brainer but calcium rich dairy products can create problems as well. It is not the fact that dairy products are so rich in calcium though. It is because the digestive system has problems breaking down dairy products into something it can use and most of the nutrients wind up as waste for the kidneys to filter through.

Studies have shown that grapefruit juice increases the risk of kidney stones as well and should be avoided.

As hard as it may sound in this day and age, the more you stay away from sugar, the better off you are. Sugar actually leeches calcium from the bones and sends it first to the kidneys before it passes out as waste through the urinary tract. As you would imagine, this would make the urine calcium rich which would increase the risk of developing a kidney stone.

Finally, reduce all the things that leech water from your body and dehydrate you. This includes caffeine and alcohol as well salt because these things will leech water from your urine which in turn will increase the concentration of minerals that you will have to pass, increasing the risk of kidney stones.
